LEGAL TIPS

Protecting your family’s inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires

care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property. Westminster Law can assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

COMPETITION TIME

104 Ashby Show th

Sunday 15th July at Cattows Farm, Heather The Imps Motorcycle Display Team are the main attraction at this year’s Ashby Show. They will have you mesmerised by an unmissable display of discipline and skill. From billowing fire jumps to multiple motorcycle combination “cross-over” routines. The youngest rider is just 5 years old. Show times are 12.45pm and 4.15pm in the main ring. With livestock show classes for some of the best cattle, sheep and horses in the country, this traditional agricultural show links town and country. You can sample the region’s best food in the popular British Farm Produce marquee, see how farming has progressed through the years with the brilliant display of old vintage tractors and marvel at the massive machines used in farming today. The Greyfriars Accumulator Show Jumping class will again bring the country’s best show jumpers along to compete for the £500 top prize. Competitors will race against the clock building up points for each jump they clear. If shopping is more your thing, then this is the place for you with over 200 trade exhibitors selling everything from the latest fashions, handbags, jewellery or something for the garden. Children will be entertained throughout the day by Punch & Judy, Stilt Walkers, Bouncy Castles and Go Carts. New this year is Farmageddon – an interactive laser experience. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads. Enter them in a class or two in the Fun Dog Show and perhaps go home with a rosette. There are plenty of tasty food outlets

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

When words get in the way People ‘in the know’ commonly use special words when talking about their particular area of expertise (or when trying to give that impression!). Sometimes they’re not even words but abbreviations, or a bunch of letters thrown together to form an obscure acronym; it’s like some kind of secret code. Why do people do this? On the positive side, think how useful medical jargon is in the time-pressured environment of an emergency operating theatre. It can be life-saving. However, jargon sadly can also act as a barrier, effectively preventing many from gaining any real understanding of some subjects. God’s message for mankind found in the Bible is no exception. Some people inevitably perceive it as shrouded by unfamiliar and mysterious

26

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

religious words. It turns out that God’s message is remarkably simple, straight forward and jargon-free when you take the time to read and understand it. It’s logical, clear and incredibly insightful. We are acutely aware of the dangers of ‘religious jargon’. We never want words to get in the way of understanding – it’s too important for that. In fact, we invite you to tell us if you ever experience us doing so! Put us to the test this month. July is ‘Simplifying Bible Jargon’ month, where we’ll be doing just that at 10am every Sunday morning. Come along and see how we do. We’d love to see you. YOUR WELLBEING

Loneliness Does Not Discriminate … … it can affect anyone. Here are a few things that you can do to help yourself:

Carve Time for Yourself: Sometimes, people get lonely if they are overworked for a prolonged period of time or take on more than they can handle. This can leave little time to build and maintain meaningful social relationships. If you are at ease and not hurried, you may be more likely to want to talk to others and to develop connections. Refrain from Comparing: A large number of people frequently compare themselves or their lives unfavorably with others. This can only hurt you. Your life is uniquely your own. It is a journey. Do not compare your journey with others. Interact with family/friends: Make it a point to have some meaningful conversations with loved ones/ friends as often as possible. Many people nowadays end up prioritizing other activities in life at the cost of real social connections. Even one good relationship

can make a marked difference.

Each of these steps is progress and an accomplishment in itself. Creating time to pause and reflect helps you to have a better relationship with yourself as well as with others. If you do not have family members around and are having difficulty initiating or maintaining friendships, seek professional help from a counsellor. This can unearth what’s causing or perpetuating this difficulty, and will help you find specific ways to overcome it. TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Online

Gaming Saf afety

Over the years, gaming on both PC and conssole has changed. What was once a safe closed system where you could simply load a game and get playing solo, has now developed massively into online based activity. As such, it’s the responsibility of both parents and children to ensure that they stay safe online and have fun with gameplay at the same time. Whilst gaming is meant to be fun, its also a risky place to be for a few reasons: • There are varying ages of players, so not everyone will necessarily be nice and can often resort to bullying and upsetting other players.

suitable for younger ages. Be mindful m of online chatt consoles, con such as TeamSpeak, Mumble, ble, Skype and Discord – only join those who you know, and d wit with reputation. Also, be cautious of chat sessions within in str streaming sites like Twitch and YouTube Gaming. Never share re personal information online with people you don’t know - keep yourself safe. For parents, also check that your children cannot make transactional payments for rewards/paid content within games. Nothing worse than not noticing that your child has ran up a bill for you!

• Some games have upsetting content such as violence, horror or adult content – this can be more realistic with Virtual Reality based gameplay. • Online chat can also result in exchanges of relationship and friendship building, which in many cases is fine, but has also been used as a form of online grooming – there have been reports of this in popular games such as Fortnite. So, what can you do to stay safe? Tell a trusted adult if something upsets you and learn how to block/mute/report other players should this start happening in a game. Don’t get upset if you lose a game, it happens, as getting angry with other players or speaking out of line can often make situations worse. Check the game ratings, they often give a good indication whether the game is

ASHBY TOWN COUNCIL NEWS We find out more about your all new Town Council Manager; Stuart Benson. Stuart Benson is a familiar figure to many in Ashby, not least due to the fact Stuart Benson that he owned and ran Extreme Gamez on Mill Lane Mews from August 2000 to earlier this year. Through this role he became a strong advocate for the Ashby Town Traders and for Ashby itself. It therefore comes as no surprise that he recently joined Ashby Town Council in a new role as Town Council Manager. We met with Stuart to understand more about the role and what it means both for Stuart and for the local community. As Stuart explained; the role itself is varied from day to day covering a number of different projects. Across the summer Stuart will be busy organising and publicising the many local events coming up such as Jim’s Tractor Run (see pages

22 and 23 for details), the Sealed Knot Battle Reenactments and the Festival of Transport. With his vast experience online Stuart will also be responsible for the Town Council’s website and social media as well as the co-ordination and promotion of digital training courses for local retailers. Ashby was very proud to achieve our Purple Flag accreditation last year but this has to be reapplied for each and every year and Stuart is focusing on this as well as working towards making the town ‘greener’. Work is progressing well on the goal of making Ashby plastic free. Look out for Ashby Town Council branded bags for life appearing in the town stores this month. It all sounds very exciting and along with the stakeholder teams on the Ashby Project there is a lot of hard work taking place to improve Ashby for us all.

Foot Files: INGROWN TOE NAILS An ingrown toe nail is when a spike of nail pierces the skin. The toe may feel warm, look red, bleed, become infected, ooze puss and cause a lot of pain! WHY DO THEY DEVELOP? The most common reason is because people cut their nails too short, however other factors like: • Tight footwear. • General trauma. • It runs in the family. • Feet being exposed to sweaty or wet conditions persistently. • Contracted toes or bunions. • A person’s gait (the way he/she walks).

TIPS FOR AVOIDING INGROWN TOE NAILS • Avoid rounding the corners when cutting your nails. • Do not cut nails too short. • Avoid tight socks. • Keep feet warm and dry. • Wear footwear that you can wiggle your toes in but do not slide back and forth. • If your nails naturally curve or you suspect an ingrown toenail please contact us on the details below!

MORE THAN £400M LANGUISHING IN OLD PENSION POTS With more people changing jobs over their working lifetime, the average saver can have multiple pension pots and have no idea how to track them down. What’s more, people move homes and can lose track of paperwork over the years. As a result, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has estimated there are over £400m in unclaimed pension savings in the UK. If you’re in this position, then there are various steps you can take. Contacting old employers for details can be a good first step, and then there’s the free Pension Tracing Service provided by the DWP. This service was launched back in May 2016 and has been used more than a million times by savers. WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PENSION SCHEMES You may want to consider consolidating your various pensions into just one plan. Potential reasons for moving a pension could include seeking better investment performance, looking for lower charges to boost your retirement income and pursuing access to a wider range of investments. But before you make your move, there are downsides that you need to consider. If you’re in a final salary company pension, also known as a

defined benefits scheme, it will often be best advice to stay put because of the guarantees attached to your pension. Some money purchase schemes, referred to as defined contribution plans, also offer guarantees that need to be fully evaluated before transferring to an alternative scheme. THESE ARE THE STEPS TO TAKE • Keep a record of all your pension pots, so you don’t lose out at retirement • Make pension saving a priority. Consider topping up your contributions whenever your financial circumstances allow, remember, within limits, they attract valuable tax relief • Know your state pension age and get a forecast of how much you’ll receive • Speak to us about arranging a regular review to help ensure your retirement plans remain on track. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current pension plans and financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS These are exciting times for one of our long term advertisers; Ashby Reflexology as they open their brand new treatment room and studio above Souk de la Zouch on Bath Street corner in Ashby! We caught up with owner; Alliy Mortimer to find out more and she explained; “I found reflexology by accident nearly 10 years ago when I became a single parent and needed to keep my brain intact so went and enrolled in college at Milton Keynes on a part time course which covered Holistic Therapies. From there I fell in love with reflexology and continued practicing until my daughter was old enough for me to concentrate on making it a business.” Alliy established Ashby Reflexology initially as a mobile business but can now also offer clients the choice to see her in the new treatment area so handily located right in the town centre. The room has a massage bed, massage chair, reclining armchair (for reflexology clients who prefer not to use the bed).

Ashby Reflexology treatments include: • Reflexology • Massage • Indian Head Massage • Aromatherapy • Hopi Ear Candles Alliy is also currently studying hot stone massage and allergy testing and intends to introduce them soon. On a Tuesday and Friday Alliy is available for mobile treatments covering Ashby and surrounding areas (within seven miles). The treatment room is open on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and the occasional Saturday. Follow ‘Ashby Reflexology’ on Facebook for monthly offers and details of their new loyalty card.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Needwood and South Derbyshire Clayla and ds

N Column C Noon

1

TThe last of our six Noon Colum mns iss situated at Jacksons Bank, part of the ancient Needwood p FForest and right on the outer rreaches of the National Forest. TThe walk is an easy hours stroll but you might like to complete your outing by making use of the large, and rather lovely, picnic area at the entrance to the woodland. This beautiful Noon Column is the most rugged of the six si - being carved to capture the essence of the many mature trees within this landscape. Indeed it does oe it so well that at a glimpse one might pass by as it blends into the setting of the l forest. Stop to take a closer look and you’ll see how l cleverly it has been crafted. The walk starts from the car park rk at the entrance to Jackson’s Bank which is accessed d via Brackenhurst Road, just off the A515 and close to Hoar Cross. The postcode for sat nav users is DE13 8RG.

Walk straight ahead down the main n track ignoring any small paths that lead off into the woodland. After a while hile yyou will ill arrive at a fork in the track - bear left. Your path drops p downhill and, shortly after it starts to level e out, you need to bear left onto a narrow path going oin through a gap in the hedgerow (2) to come out ut beside a small building. Here you join the end of the he access road for a dwelling on your right. Follow this access road down to a ford with a footbridge on either h side (3). Take either of the bridges across the stream onto the

3

lane on the far side. Turn right h and walk along the lane for or about 200 yards until you u see a wooden footpath arrow leading g off to your right. Follow this hi arrow through a small wooden gate and over another bridge, taking you back c across the same stream and into a field. ld

When I went this field el had been recently grazed and was deeply e rutted where the cattle had been - expect it to be muddy after wet weather. The path h goes through the gateway immediately ahead of you and then continues straight up the field. e Once you get to the far end of th he field you willl find the next footpath marker, telling yo ou that you are now on the Kissing Gate walk. Go o thrrough the small ma gate next to the marker, back into t the woodland. On n your left yyou will see a pon nd (4) - bear left to reaacch it and tth hen bear right so that you are walking aro ound the right bank to the far end where water e flo ows in. At A this point turn right and go up a wide set of steps set into the slope.

2

Leave the car park via a small wooden gate by the metal barrier leading onto a wide track into the forest. On your right is the picnic area, the noon column is on your left (1).

op of the steps is a junction of paths - turn u Att the top le g eft and walk a short way up towards a metal gate att the woodland w edge. Just before reaching the h gate g there h is a narrow track leading off to your right in nto the woodland (5). Take this track and follow lo itt as it meanders along, always fairly close to the th edge e of the woodland, with fields fi ld visible vi through the trees on your u left. Once you start to glimpse the picnic area ahead of you bear b right and drop down to rejoin in the main forest track from the e start of your walk. Turn left on this is track to pass back by the Noon Column and return to the car park.

LOCAL EVENTS

Heather Scarecrow Festival al

celebrates its 20th Anniversaryy The hugely popular Heather Scarecrow Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and the villagers plan to make it extra special. It will take place from 11am on Sunday 29th July until 6pm on Sunday 5th August. There will be ample free parking at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ) and Heather Village Hall (LE67 2RE). Admission is free and guides are available for £2 to help visitors find all the Scarecrows and vote for their favourite. This year the festival has the use of David Taylor Memorial Hall from Sunday 29th July until Friday 3rd August and has invited local groups and charities to make use of the hall for a day to raise funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow guides. This means there will be additional parking and toilet facilities for visitors. Details of the activities taking place at the hall each day will be shown in the Festival Guide and announced on the Facebook Page. To mark the 20th Anniversary and to acknowledge the lady who established Heather Scarecrow Festival, organisers are introducing The Di Everett Award this year. This is in the form of an optional theme, the winner of which will receive this special award and an additional prize of £50. The theme is ‘Night at the Movies’. The winner of the theme will be selected by an independent judge. Be sure to pop in to the church during the festival. You will be blown away by the yarn bombing! Village residents have been working on this for months.

70

Refreshments will be served in the Church on Saturday 4th August and they will be holding a Summer Fete on Sunday 5th August. Other features this year include displays of ng Heather’s photograph’s showing Heather s past provided by Ibstock Historical Society and a display of Coalville’s Famous 50 at the Football Club. Also, be prepared for possible special surprise visitors during the final weekend. Let’s not forget the main aim of the event is to help raise funds for local village groups, whilst providing an affordable day out for families. It would be difficult to achieve both these aims without the generous sponsorship of several local businesses helping to cover some of the costs. Sponsors include Rebound Ashby who have offered vouchers to scarecrow creators as an additional incentive and have also provided money off vouchers in the Scarecrow Guide. The School’s, Preschools and Day Nursery’s competition is sponsored by Kimble’s Music and Movement. More details can be found at www.heatherscarecrowfestival.com You can also find ‘Heather Scarecrow Festival’ on Facebook and Twitter.

MONEY MATTERS

DIY is not for everyone! The Financial Conduct Authority has been reviewing ‘Retirement Options’ since the introduction of ‘Retirement Freedom’ back in 2015. They wanted to understand how the changes were affecting people’s decision-making process when approaching retirement. Their findings did raise cause for concern. The initial report, issued in 2017, provided some interesting statistics. For example: 30% of Pension Drawdown plans were purchased without any financial advice. Pensions Drawdown are an Investment and Income Product that not only needs to be structured properly, considering the risk, but also reviewed periodically to ensure they are working effectively. Without advice, a high percentage of people take the path of least resistance and buy their Annuity or Drawdown from their current provider. In fact, over 40% of Annuity and Drawdown Pension Plans taken up were selected without advice. The report also highlighted that whilst there are more than 50 providers offering Retirement Income Products, many people not seeking professional, independent advice are largely unaware of the options available to them. This is probably the most important and key decision any of us will make and it will affect the rest of our lives – walking down the only path presented to us could be going in the wrong direction. Recently, on an evening out with friends, one commented “I’m retired now. I’m on a fixed budget – I’ve got to make this money last!” It made me think. A comment regularly made by new clients I meet who are close to retirement: “I wish I had given my retirement more thought”. Well, after reading this article, do not fall into the same trap of doing nothing. For those looking to enjoy life in retirement, it is never too early to review your options. Whenever you think ‘I really ought to do something about my pension’, do that ‘something’ today. Have a chat with an Independent Adviser and ideally one who 74

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd uses Cashflow Modelling Software – this way, you will see how the retirement lifestyle you aspire to matches your pension provision. You may even be pleasantly surprised to find out how you could fully or partly retire earlier. With more than 50 providers in the market, you need someone with access to the whole market - not just your current provider, and one who has nothing but your best interests at heart – that’s the value of independence. My house has dozens of examples of my bad D.I.Y. – fortunately, none of my handywork is that important to our future but, my advice is, whether in the home or more critically when it comes to your Pension and financial security, D.I.Y. is not for everyone! Source: www.fca.org.uk/publications/market-studies/ retirement-outcomes-review Note: A pension is a long-term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down, which would have an impact on the level of pension benefits available. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

PET’S CORNER

Keeping your dog safe in the water this summer Swimming is a fun activity for your dog, and one which can be extremely beneficial for their overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone. So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening? Stay in the shallows at first Letting your dog play in shallow waters helps them to acclimatise and gain confidence iff they’re relatively new to swimming.

stomach due to the bacteria and parasites that are often present, so it’s a good idea to take some fresh drinking water with you. Don’t let them get too tired Swimming is tiring for your dog, so watch out for signs that they’re flagging. They may start to panic and flounder in the water, especially if they’re novice swimmers. It’s possible to buy life jackets for dogs, which give them confidence in the water if they’re a little unsure.

Be aware of undercurrents It’s easy for your dog to be swept out further than you’d like if there are tidal undercurrents on n your stretch of beach. Fast-flowing rivers and strreams also pose a danger in this respect, even if your dog’s a strong swimmer. Provide fresh water to drink Drinking lake or river water can result in an n upset

FITNESS TIPS

Structuring a

Training Plan

I’ve spoken to a lot of people about diet plans and how one size does not fit all, cookie cutter online plans generally don’t get you where you want to be as everyone is different, the same goes for training, while a quick online workout can really help you get started, it’s great to know how to structure your own plan to see results.

Goals!

Having a goal in mind is vital, you need to set yourself a goal. Whether it be to build up strength, increase your fitness levels or simply to start coming along to the gym. But the first step is noting down what you want to achieve :)

Time! How many days y have you got?

Havin sett your goal,l you need to de decide how Having

many times per week you can commit to the gym or some form of training. For example, there is no point structuring a plan of 6 sessions a week if you can only do 3. Depending on your goal you will have certain criteria you need to hit. If your goal was, say building muscle, then you need to make sure you hit everybody part. If you can only train twice a week then an upper/lower body split can work, as could a full body routine. 3x a week and you could do a push/ pull/legs routine. Note down how many days a week you can train and then structure your plan from there!

Training experience

Before structuring your plan, you need to know your training experience i.e. a beginner will not be doing the same kind of training as someone who has trained for 10 years plus. If you are a beginner, I would recommend learning and basing your training around compound lifts. For example, squat, deadlift, bench press, to build a base and foundation for the rest of your workouts. Remember, form is more important than weight so take your time especially when learning new ovements movements.

Training frequency

How often should I train each body part?

Training frequency will all depend on what your goal is - I would advise everyone to hit each body part at least once a week, but if you can try hitting each body part twice. If you don’t have the time but can fit in an extra session then use this to work on a lagging body part.

Training volume

How many sets and reps should I do? How many reps you should do will generally be determined by the goal. A lower rep range is beneficial to build strength and power, whereas a higher rep range can lead to enhanced muscular endurance. In terms of sets and reps for the whole workout there is no ideal specific number, what you need to do is work out what you can recover from effectively for the next workout. For example, if you end up setting out a routine where train your chest twice a week, and on the first session you spend hours working on it, you may be so fatigued that by the time the second session comes you may still not be able to move, then this second session would be counterproductive.

Recovery

I always advise people to warm up thoroughly and use mobility exercises before an exercise routine, and to stretch afterwards. Also, try and get enough sleep, you need to make sure you’re recovering for your next session.

Rest

I advise people to rest at least 1-2 days a week, giving your body enough time to recuperate ready for your next sessions will lead to much better results. In short you need to rest long enough so you can train again for your next session, each individual will have different recovery rates.

Enjoyment!

Most importantly, whilst writing a routine, pick exercises you enjoy. The best training routine is a realistic one you can stick to. By Marcus White Fitness Republic

When structuring your own plan, you need to work out how many sets and reps are enough for you to recover and progress.

Progressive Overload

A big builder of muscle is what we call mechanical tension. For example, the more load a muscle has to deal with, the more growth. So, while structuring your plan you will want to slowly over time increase the weight you’re lifting, while adding an extra 1.25kg plate a side to your exercise every couple of weeks won’t feel like much, after a few months you will notice the difference.

Track your Progress

You will want to keep track of every single workout! Note down what felt easy, what felt hard, your weights and rep ranges, keep slowly progressing over time and you will see results! Whether this be a simple notepad, gym log book or a gym logging app on your phone, try to keep track of everything you do in the gym.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

Get with the programme! For every play the Venture Theatre brings to our audiences we also have a corresponding programme. The programme is a chance to get to know the cast, a synopsis of the play and a souvenir to take home! All the content in our programmes are written by our members. Even the printing is organised by Emma who is currently responsible for coordinating our programmes. Like most professional theatres we like to include a director’s note where the director has a chance to explain their interpretation of the play and the challenges they faced during the production. Our president Margaret opens our programmes with some context around why the theatre has picked the play and any history if we have performed it with another cast previously.

If you’re coming to a performance to see an actor you know personally the programme is a great momento. Each actor will have a history of their acting experience and more recently Emma has included the actors’ favourite quotes from the play and humours comments about their fellow cast members. Be sure to buy a programme at our next performance, Skylight. This will be performed from 30th August until the 8th September. Tickets are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre or from the Venture Theatre website.

IN YOUR GARDEN

The Laburnum Tree Laburnum trees are known for their yellow racemes which are like yellow pearls dripping from the branches. Looking towards a Laburnum tree in flower is similar to being transported to a summer holiday and a block of sunshine. An excellent variety of this tree for growing in gardens is the Laburnum x watereri Vossi. This was bred in Holland in the early 19th century and has an Award of Garden Merit. This reliable tree thrives in gardens all over the UK as it survives in most soils and is generally trouble free. Note though that it does not grow in waterlogged soil. Laburnum grows best in the sun but will still grow in partial shade too. Laburnums are very hardy, even down to about minus 20 degrees centigrade. Generally no feeding is required but they may need watering in times of severe drought.

Laburnum is versatile and can be grown to bend over a pergola, arch or structure. Such training will make a beautiful living frame or, even a grand entrance. By tying in young trees along the length of a pergola, a marvellous yellow tunnel is created in late spring when the tree is in flower. For the remaining time a welcome shady walk way is made. Famously there is such a tunnel at Barnsley House in Gloucestershire, which has appeared in many a garden calendar and garden book. This Laburnum tunnel is stunningly under planted with purple Alliums, which contrast vibrantly with the yellow flowers of the Laburnum. I must point out though that the entire Laburnum tree is poisonous. It was featured as a method of poisoning in a Mid Summer Murders episode once. Truly every bit of this tree is poisonous, including the bark, seeds, leaves, flowers and roots, so take care where you plant it. Lastly do not plant near ponds because the leaves and seeds will fall in the water and poison the fish. To make a purchase of a Laburnum tree, then choosing a young tree whilst it is still a whip will be the least expensive option. Whips are good for training early over a pergola or archway too. They are also available in pots or containers. I would suggest planting a Laburnum at least 12 meters from the house to protect your foundations. When planting this tree add some fish, blood and bone to get the tree off to a good start.

Happy gardening!

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

A paradigm shift on graffiti How do you feel about graffiti? Some of us no doubt think of it as a nuisance and an eyesore. Even those who think of it as an art form might doubt if the walls of our beautiful old St Helen’s Church is an appropriate and fitting place for it. So, would you be surprised to learn that not only do we have graffiti, but also that we’re thrilled? Here at St Helen’s we get very excited about all things to do with our heritage, and the stories of lives lived here in Ashby. The graffiti we’re so pleased to be discovering on our walls is, would you believe it, medieval! It seems in the Middle Ages graffiti was entirely acceptable, which means many of our ancient churches and cathedrals are covered with inscriptions and marks and symbols. The marks we’re finding in St Helen’s are like having a time machine back to the medieval parish of Ashby, giving us an insight into the lives of the men and women who inhabited our town.

98

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Our Heritage Officer is very enthusiastic about graffiti, and she will be helping the rest of us to understand and appreciate its merits this month. On 28th July we have a Medieval Graffiti Day starting with an expert in this field, Alison Fearn from Leicester University, telling us about the ‘Markings on the Walls’ and including plenty of opportunity to hunt for, examine, and record graffiti in both the church and the castle next door. The whole day, with lunch, costs £20 and can be booked at www.sthelensheritage.co.uk

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

Mixing with the Stars! Our Honorary Patron, Sally Ann Triplett, has played too many roles to mention but just to give you an idea she has played Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Donna in Mamma Mia, Grizabella in Cats, Florence in Chess, Rizzo in Grease, Roxi Hart in Chicago, Miss Berta in Acorn Antiques and the list goes on for her West End credits. More recently on Broadway, Sally has been in Carrie The Musical, played Peggy White in The Last Ship, and Mrs Emma du Maurier in Finding Neverland. Sally is currently playing Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd in New York. Sally has been to see two of our shows with her family – Oklahoma! in 2008 and Hello, Dolly! in 2012, and always sends a message of good luck for the programme. On the occasion of our 50th Anniversary Concert in 2013 Sally set up a Skype video link from the stage of Mamma Mia, and wished us well along with all the cast of that show at the time. Group Treasurer Karen Jamieson and her family are just back from a trip to New York, where they attended a performance of Sweeney Todd. With a small cast, a specially converted theatre, a three piece orchestra, and pie and mash (deliciously cooked up by former White House chef Bill Fosse) Sweeney Todd is a very strong piece of theatre. Karen said “As usual, Sally went out of her way to meet us before the show – in fact she was sitting on a rock outside the theatre eating ice-cream, chatting to Thom Sesna (Sweeney) – and introduced us to all the cast after the performance. We have become friends over the years, and it was most touching to hear Sally explain the circumstances of her involvement with us. Sally described AMTG productions as highly professional, and told her fellow actors 102

how high our standards are. We had a wonderful time mixing with Broadway stars – it was like we had all been friends for years. The actor playing Judge Turpin (Michael James Leslie) asked me if his English accent was good enough, and said he had learnt it by watching Patricia Routledge in Keeping Up Appearances! At the end of the evening we walked up 7th Avenue to the subway together and I asked Sally if she wasn’t worried about being recognised? In her most charming, and down to earth way, Sally laughed and said “What me? No!” and it is that very natural and normal manner which makes her the star she is.” You can follow Sally on Twitter @ann_triplett, and for all information about us go to our website amtg.org.uk – better still, come and join us for Pirates of Penzance – send an email to enquiries@amtg.org.uk for more details.

ON THE BEAT

This month, Chief Constable Simon Colee, reflects on the year’s performance: There has been a rise of 19.2% in the crime actually reported to us and this seems to be down to a combination of things. There have been more burglaries and vehicle crimes, with some of the latter needing manufacturers to design out opportunities for criminals. The increase in recorded violence reflects a number of things; it is encouraging that more people are feeling confident to report domestic abuse offences to us. The scale of domestic abuse remains a huge concern. Our work with partners is crucial to support victims and their families, and to target offenders.

ago as he created a professional police service. The call for visibility is one that we hear consistently. That now includes both in actual places, and in the cyber world. Our network of neighbourhood teams means that every area in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has a dedicated team solving problems at the heart of their communities. They are augmented by our Neighbourhood Investigation Teams and the, sometimes unsung, heroes and heroines of what

Because Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are great places to live we are seeing the population grow rapidly when compared to other places. This is reflected in calls for our service. Last year we received 11,014 more ‘grade one’ emergency 999 calls than we did five years ago. We have also worked hard on answering non-emergency 101 calls. We take 500,000 of these a year. Our current pick up time is 6 seconds for 999 calls and 36 seconds for non-emergency calls. We have also looked hard at how we deal with reports of missing people. On a typical day we take nine missing from home reports. One day recently that figure was nineteen as the day started. We work with the places that make the most reports, and try to engage with partners around some of the people who go missing regularly to ensure that any problems are identified and resolved. We are hugely proud of the enormous support that we get from local communities. That ranges from the amazing Special Constables who give up their time to patrol with us; the brilliant volunteers who support us; the committed neighbourhood watch schemes that bring communities together; through to the people that call us, and give us witness statements. We very much police ‘with’ communities, as Peel envisaged all those years 106

we do - our 24/7 patrol officers; they are out there 24/7 responding to calls from the public, keeping the roads safe, and providing reassurance. We are now working on our plan for the next few years, Blueprint 2025 which aligns with the national policing vision for 2025. For the public this means increasing reporting options, officers and staff using technology to combat crime, more recruiting, and a real focus on what harms the place that we live. For colleagues it means more hard work, but in that the opportunity to help people, convict those that need convicting, and helping to protect our communities. ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS The twentieth issue of the Museum’s annual journal Past and Present is now for sale at our reception area. As in previous years, there are articles on various aspects of the town and neighbourhood. The third part of The History of the Mammatt Family is followed by a very individual look at Brian Clough, onetime Manager of Derby County and Nottingham Forest. Articles on Harriet Raven, first Matron of the first Cottage Hospital in South Street, a case of mistaken family identity with the Shirleys of Staunton Harold and illustration of the race cards used in the mid 19th century for the Ashby Race Course off Upper Packington Road, are followed by two book reviews. Past issues of the magazine are also on sale in the Museum’s shop. Museum trustees hosted a successful visit by the Packington History Society, with a view to forming an even closer relationship between the two bodies. We hold good runs of the village church magazine and Packington Post, as well as other ephemera and artefacts related to the settlement. In fact, it is worth reminding readers

that Ashby Museum is also the museum for the surrounding villages - Breedon,, Packington, Blackfordby, Coleorton, Smisby, Staunton Harold and Grace Dieu Priory.

Past and Present

We also look after archives for THE JOURNAL OF the Ashby Canal ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH MUSEU M Association, No. 20 the local British Legion and the Bo owls Club. We have past material on the Ferrers and Ivanhoe Freemason’s Lodge and the Ashby Civic Society. A last reminder that the popular Spa Town walk is on Wednesday July 4th, leaving the Museum at 7 p.m. Please call 01530 560 090 if you wish to book one of the few remaining places.

ASHBY MATTERS

Be selfish and selfless-volunteer!

Many of the people I meet in Ashby are already taking advantage of volunteering. It can be more than just helping in a charity shop, it can include tidy ups, fund raisers or simply being a friend. I am pleased to say that Ashby folk often give generously, whether at a charity event or a simple coffee morning. Fundraising can be difficult, but perhaps not as hard as ‘people’ raising. Many groups have a core of volunteers that have been giving their time, dedication and skills to good causes for a long time. Many of these groups worry about the future, as without volunteers they would not be able to function. Volunteering is a great way of giving back to the communities we live in but many people

don’t realise just how easy it is to volunteer, or just how beneficial it can be for the volunteer. Research has shown that volunteers develop their skills, can improve their job prospects, but also have better mental health and can decrease the likelihood of heart disease! So what are you waiting for? Some organisations require as little as two hours per month! Always working? Ask your boss if your business can give something back to the community as an organisation. People can even volunteer as a family, or from home. If nothing else, you’lll get that ‘ffeel good factor’. So feel free to contact me for more details of how you can get involved in local activities, either on your own or as part of a group. Andrew Barson, Ashby Matters – 07712 324 253

BOOK REVIEWS

Holiday Reads

Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. Salvage the Bones Jesmyn Ward With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-year-old Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you. I Still Dream James Smythe It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an AI with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read. Wishes Under the Willow Tree Phaedra Patrick Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him. Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart Holly Ringland Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away. The Family Next Door Sally Hepworth Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down. How I Lose You Kate McNaughton How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

CHESS PUZZLE

Wha hat at doe dooeess Bla lac acckk doo aft afftteeerr 1 Ke2 e2? 2 Jose Raul Capablanca (1888-1942) Capablanca was word champion from 1921 to 1927. His name sounds like Casablanca, the classic film of 1942, coincidentally the same year as Capablanca died. His speciality was winning from positions where he had a microscopic advantage. This sounds like an easy plan to follow, but it requires nerves of steel and a huge amount of concentration. An example is this position from Lasker- Capablanca 1921 in the world championship match in Havana. After 1 Ke2 what should Black do? Sure, there’s chess in Havana, but you can also get a game at the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby. The chess club meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm. Beginners are welcome. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details or just turn up. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found below - should you need it!
