LAND AND BUILDINGS NEEDED in or near Ashby 4th Ashby is the largest Scout group in Leicestershire and has plans to continue to expand to make Beavers, Cubs and Scouts available to more families in Ashby. We are open to boys and girls across the town and surrounding villages. Space is urgently needed and some funds are available to acquire land or buildings. We need a meeting place around 90m2 plus ancillary rooms, toilets, kitchen and storage totalling around 150m2. Alternatively, we are seeking one or two acres where we could erect a building above. We are looking in or near Ashby on either a sale or long term rent on an affordable basis, possibly with a strict uplift clause. Where possible, we’d like the space to be used by the wider community too. KNOW SOMEWHERE? Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020 TWOTHIRDS WITHOUT LIFE INSURANCE DESPITE HEALTH WORRIES A recent ‘Health, Wealth and Happiness’ report i shows that poor health (29%) and concerns over family members’ health (24%) top the list of things likely to impact happiness, above the sudden death of a family member or friend (24%), terrorism (23%) and the impact of Brexit (17%). Despite health worries topping the list of concerns expressed, 57% of respondents haven’t taken out life insurance, with a further 11% not sure whether they have or not. This is particularly worrying when you consider how many of these people are likely to be homeowners who have mortgages. Life insurance can be a financial lifeline at a sad and difficult time, paying off a mortgage if the borrower were to die. Critical illness cover can pay out a lump sum on the diagnosis of a serious illness as defined in the policy. HOW PROTECTION POLICIES HELP FAMILIES Protection policies don’t just pay a lump sum on death or the diagnosis of a critical illness, they can also help provide an income for families hit by an accident, sickness and unemployment, help parents pass their wealth on to future generations, and can have a major role to play in Inheritance Tax planning too. A payout from a policy could make the

8

difference between your loved ones facing a financial struggle at a challenging and emotional period in their lives, and being able to maintain the sort of lifestyle you would want them to enjoy. INCOME PROTECTION With state benefit provision representing merely a basic safety net, how would you pay the bills if you were sick or injured and couldn’t work? If the unexpected were to happen, how would you and your family manage financially? Coping with a long-term illness or injury can be stressful enough without the added pressure of money worries. Taking out an income protection plan offers peace of mind and security for your family and means that you would receive a regular replacement income every month for a defined period of time. PEACE OF MIND With so many different types of policy available it can be hard to know which one is right for your circumstances and offers the best value for money, so it makes sense to get advice that will help you make the right choice for your family circumstances. Please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Welcome to the latest update from Ashby Town Council. As well as lots of upcoming events to look forward to we have so much news to share. We start with a new addition to our team and welcome on board Stuart Benson as Ashby Town Manager. Stuart will be working on a number of projects including support for all the summer events. A key focus for Stuart right now is development of the green initiative initiated through the Ashby Project. This will have a number of elements to it including improved cycle routes, promotion of the many Stuart Benson walks along the National Forest Way and working towards a plastic free Ashby. Stuart is currently in talks with the town’s retailers about ditching plastic bags in favour of more environmentally friendly bags for life. The design of the bags complete with the new Town Council branding is currently in progress. Look out for more details on Stuart, his new role and his plans in next month’s issue.

Completion of the North Street car park and the entrance to Hood Park in the Culture & Leisure Quarter is scheduled for the end of June. A piece of artwork to complete the transformation has been commissioned. Work continues on the town branding and we are looking for more brand ambassadors to help in this. Many of you will have seen the new look shop front for Zamani’s complete with the Town 10

Council logo. This continues through to their new menus and even their till receipts. Many thanks to Pejman and Kate for their support. If you would like to find out more about becoming a town brand ambassador then email hello@ashbydelazouch.info The next stage of improvements to St Helen’s Church are imminent with landscaping of the grounds and work on the footpaths planned. The Royal Hotel building is being regularly monitored to ensure no deterioration occurs. A planning application will be brought forward in the next few months for the rest of the site. By the time you read this article the new Ashby Town Mayor will have taken over. A huge thank you to Jim Hoult for all his work and dedication over the last twelve months. ASHBY SCHOOL

Ashby School’s 450th Birthday Members of the local community are being asked to share their memories and old photographs of Ashby School, as part of the school’s 450th anniversary celebrations. Local people are also invited to join in a weekend of commemorative events in July, including a gala garden party and anniversary tours of the school for former students. The garden party on Friday 6th July will feature musical performances by current and returning students. Visitors will be invited to bring a picnic to enjoy on the scenic Boarding House lawn. Tickets will be available to students, staff, parents and governors, both past and present, as well as friends of the school and members of the local community. Anniversary tours will take place on Saturday 7th July. Former students will be able to book a place on one of several tours throughout the day. Teacher Donna Tolley said: “We want anyone who has fond associations with Ashby School to join us for this

very special occasion in the school’s history. “We would also love people to get in touch with any memories or memorabilia of the school that we can include in our celebrations. “Ashby School has changed immeasurably since 1567 but what has remained the same is its excellent reputation and the enormous affection people feel for it.” Tickets will go on sale later this term. For more info, or to share your memories of Ashby School, email Donna Tolley at d.tolley@ashbyschool.org.uk

OPEN GARDENS

Ashby Open Gardens In our June issue we brought you news of Blackfordby Open Gardens and this month we have more details to share about the upcoming Ashby Open Gardens. You may however be asking yourself what is an “Open Garden” and am I welcome? The organisers of Ashby Open Gardens have very kindly provided us with this handy guide to answer your questions and tell you all you need to know to enjoy these wonderful events. What is Open Gardens? Once a year, gardeners in a community will come together and invite the public into their gardens to raise money for charity. Numbers can vary, but 10-15 is typical and the event may run over 2 days. Why would I want to go? People like to go round for various reasons. Some are keen gardeners. Others may want to see what others have managed to do with their space, and get ideas for their own. Some people just enjoy a nice walk round pretty parts of a village. Some people have always wondered what was in their neighbour’s garden. Some want to purchase plants at a fraction of the cost of garden centres. Some come for tea and homemade cakes. Old, young, families, single, all are welcome. Do I need to know plants, and gardening terms? No, you don’t need to know about plants. Only about half the people who come round are gardeners, and the rest are just people out for a nice day out. You won’t be quizzed, but are welcome to ask for advice. The owners love to help someone starting out who may not know where to start.

26

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

How does it work? You normally purchase a map/ticket (known as a passport) from a central location. Typically it will cost £3-£5 per person and kids tend to go free. Profits of this normally go to charity. This passport allows you entry into ALL the gardens. Each garden will be marked on the map with a description of what you may find there. You then follow the map until you reach the first garden. There should be a sign or balloon outside to show that you have the right place. Front and/or back gardens are normally open. Go In. Don’t be shy. Have a walk around, have an explore and get some ideas. Chat to the owners about anything you want to know. Take your time, and relax. Get some tea and cake. When you are ready, go to the next one. You don’t have to go to all of them, and you can go back to ones you’ve enjoyed. If the event is open over 2 days, your passport usually allows you to come back on the second day. Now in its 11th year, Ashby Open Gardens is a wellestablished and much loved event. People travel from far and wide to experience this special weekend, and it has become famed for the friendly and welcoming owners. To date over £14,600 has been raised for charity. It returns on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July from 11am to 6pm. At least 16 gardens will be open this year with 3 new ones. Tickets are available from the Tourist Info Centre, Norths Deli, and La Zouch Restaurant from the end of June. See www.AshbyOpenGardens.co.uk for details.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE What better way to celebrate Ashby’s heritage than with a proper church fete? Fetes have a fascinating back-story. Historically towns were granted charters to hold fairs, maybe once or twice a year and lasting several days or weeks. These fairs acted as markets for selling goods and services, and drew big crowds. There would be sidestalls offering trinkets, puppet shows, sword swallowers, pie and sweet stalls, games of skill and luck. You name it, the fair provided it. Attending the fair was like going on holiday, and in times gone by, when it was rare to have the opportunity for a day away from work, everyone gleefully awaited the chance to relax and have fun. Over the years at St Helen’s we’ve had plenty of church fete fun, flinging wellies and jellies, or applebobbing, or slipping head-first down a waterslide, or pelting adult volunteers with water-soaked sponges! Well, it’s that time of year again, and in St Helen’s churchyard on 9th June, 10am until 1pm, we will have a simply super Summer Fete.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Like everyone else, the Museum volunteers were very sorry to hear of the death of Gillian Petzan. She was a good friend to the Museum and she left us some items, including the famous Santa Claus post box, which we will put on display this Christmas. We have also taken some photographs of the inside of the toy shop (Bobby White’s), which will be on our website before too long. There have been really positive reviews of Julie Barnett’s art work in the Loudoun Gallery. The exhibition comes to an end at the beginning of June, to be followed by a two month display on local archaeology. This is part of the National Archaeology Fortnight held in July.

Places on our two town history walks are steadily being filled. There is still room for a few more so if you would like to spend an enjoyable evening finding out about Ashby’s rich history do get in touch, either by calling in to the Museum or calling on 01530 560 090 to book a place. On Wednesday July 4th, Ken Hillier leads a Spa Town walk focussing on the development of the Ivanhoe Baths and the Hastings Hotel – later to be renamed the Royal Hotel. Then, on Wednesday August 8th, Robert Jones will lead a general town history walk. Both walks start at the Museum at 7pm and cost £4.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Facebook

Safety and Scammers

There are several nasty ways that scammers can get hold of your private information, especially on social networking sites. Here PC Clinic outline three key Facebook safety issues that we want you to be aware of, and how to avoid getting caught out: 1. For those not in the know, like-farming is the process where spammers post exploitative and deceptive posts to help their pages accumulate followers. These followers can then be exposed to spam, online scams or the Facebook pages can be sold to untrustworthy marketing companies. Typical scenarios include “like for this”, “share for that” etc - typical ones you often see are a batch of unopened gadgets being given away for free, all you need to do is like the post…. too good to be true isn’t it? 2. Having a public Friends list is a default setting on Facebook and really needs changing to prevent scammers viewing your friends. It’s quite simple in theory, a scammer clones your account and sends out requests, and a friend request is accepted. The scammer can attempt to initialise any number of different scams on your friend, which could very well be successful

as they would think the new profile is you. It’s called Facebook cloning, and certainly one to avoid – so let’s minimise it happening. Easy to fix by opening your Facebook Profile, click on Friends, and click the pencil icon (top right). You can then change your privacy settings accordingly. 3. If you receive an image file sent by someone, even your friend, on your Facebook Messenger or any other social media platform, just DO NOT CLICK ON IT. There have been many reports of simple JPG files being embedded with nasty viruses which can in turn infect your computer. The most recent one being the infamous Locky Ransomware virus, and you really do not want to get this on your computer. For any further help and advice, pop in to your local computer and laptop centre, PC Clinic in Huntingdon Court. Fully endorsed by Which? FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Quick fire round! This month’s article sees us fire some quick questions at Fitness Republic club owner, Simon Pellecchia.

How old are you?

I’ve just turned 46, going on 21!

How many years have you been training? I started training at 13 and then started my gym apprenticeship at 18, so I guess that’s around 33 years! Arghh, I didn’t realise it had been that long!

How many times per week do you train & what is the main tip you would share? I usually train 4-5 times per week, a mixture of weight training and HIIT training. I also teach Insanity and BODYPUMP. Two of my favourite classes.

The main piece of advice I can give is to not give up! Even a little is better than nothing.

So, what’s best - Cardio, weights or both?

If your time is limited, say 2-3 sessions per week, I would go for weights every time, if you have a little more time, then a cardio/HIIT session is a brilliant addition. Weights have the advantage of building strength and burning fat!

What’s your favourite time of day to train?

8am is my time, it’s not too early and it gets me going for the day!

50

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

What’s your favourite Fitness Republic gym challenge?

I love all our monthly challenges down at the gym, a really good mixture that gets everyone motivated! If I had to choose it would be the 4 second bench press challenge. You have to lower the bar and wait 4 seconds to raise it again as many times as you can with 10kg each side on it! It’s a killer!

Can you ever imagine stopping training? In one word…NEVER!

How much do you weigh?

Current weight is 85kg (around 13st 5lbs)

So, should we be concerned about the numbers on the scale?

The numbers on the scale can be misleading. Our Boditrax – a body composition test here at the gym is a great tool as it’s important to take into account other factors like body fat to muscle ratio, current lifestyle and nutritional habits. For example, my weight is over 13 stone but my body fat is a low 13%. That said, if you are really overweight and you definitely need to lose a few pounds, if for nothing else other than for your health, then scales are ok and can also be a good motivator when you see the numbers move.

Are our diets as important as exercise?

Most definitely. Most of us desire a sexy lean body, and this cannot be attained by training alone. You’ve heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat!’Well, it’s pretty much right!

Should you stay well away from Carbs?

Your body needs carbohydrates, so cutting these out too much will result in you not feeling that good. However, most of us eat way too many of them, so in the first instance, cutting these will have a big effect on the way you look and feel. This can mean cutting all the sugary rubbish you eat from your diet, pop, cakes, chocolate, processed foods. Replace these with whole grain sources and plenty of green vegetables.

What do you think is the best diet plan to follow?

There is no best diet! Sensible, calorie-controlled eating is the way to go. Focus on protein first, then good fats and lastly, carbs. Men should aim for 1g of protein per lb of body weight, and Females 0.5g per lb of body weight. Keep carbs to complex sources, like green vegetables, wholegrain rice, quinoa, potatoes. Good fats to include oily fish, nuts and avocado.

Should I eat before exercising?

It’s ok to eat before a good session, but I would recommend something light around an hour or so before. Anything to heavy and it could hinder your performance.

What’s your view on Full body workouts vs Split routines? Full body workouts are the way to go for most of us. If you can fit in 3 sessions per week, this is definitely the way I would go. It will have a better calorie burning effect, you will gain strength, fitness and burn a ton of fat! If you have a bit more time, say 5-6 sessions per week, then split routines are a great way to train, as you can focus on those harder body parts a little more!

How long does it take before I see some results?

If you are brand new to training you will see results really quickly. Improvements in fitness and strength come almost immediately, and some great body changes too. After you have been training a while, the improvements will slow down, as you have attained a good standard of fitness, you have to work a lot harder to make the changes.

They say it takes 4 weeks for you to see your bo ody changing, 8 weeks for friends and familyy and 12 weeks for the rest of the wo orld!

How do we make sure our technique is ok when we are weight training?

Technique is crucial when it comes to weight training. Poor form can result in poor results and often injury. A good way to make sure we are exercising correctly is to have a session with a Coach. A session with a coach can ensure that you are safe and effective in your training and making the most out of your time.

Who benefits most from Personal training?

Every single one of us can benefit immensely from a personal trainer. Whether you are 13 or 80! Poor form at any age is dangerous and can be counter-productive. A personal training session can also be the motivation you need to work that little bit harder and try new ways of training. A personal coach is a fantastic investment, as you are investing in YOU!

Finally, can you sum up for our readers?

Training is hard and gyms can be intimidating to some. Your time is precious and likely limited, but the best investment you will ever make is in yourself. Make some time for yourself, you won’t regret it I can assure you. We are all getting older and as life gets tougher, I want to be ready for whatever it throws me. I want to be able to keep moving well into my old age (PS. Our oldest member is 76!). But I created Fitness Republic because I wanted to make a really down to earth, friendly and comfortable place to workout at that everyone would feel an immense warm welcome and make friends – it happened! I am proud of what we have achieved and helping you guys is what we love best here!

ON THE BEAT A website designed to benefit and guide young people, parents and professionals on personal safety, crime prevention and reporting, has recently been launched by Leicestershire Police. The ‘Kids and Teens’ website is an educational resource area that offers advice and information on various subjects relating to the wellbeing of children and young adults. As well as providing fun and interactive tools and resources for children and teenagers, the information zone also encourages interaction with parents, carers and teachers to open up communication on the police and to give them the confidence to speak up and make the right choices. The information zone covers a range of topics for children and teenagers such as staying safe online, stranger danger, bullying and alcohol and drugs. There is also an area for teachers, parents and professionals to seek guidance and support. Katie Hudson, Children and Young Persons Officer at Leicestershire Police, said: “It is hugely important

that children, young people, parents, carers and professionals are aware of the online locations they can visit to obtain advice and information on topics they feel are important or they have concerns over. “We have also utilised other resources such as ‘ThinkUKnow’ and ‘Tales of the Road’ to make the information zone as fun and interactive as possible. Ultimately, our goal is to broaden people’s knowledge on these vital subjects in an approachable way.” For information, please visit the Kids and Teens zone via the force website: leics.police.uk/advice-andinformation/kids-and-teens

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

AMTG NEWS

How time flies! AMTG are on a well-deserved break from rehearsals following the very well received production of My Fair Lady. We’re always grateful

It is wonderful to hear that our show was “well worthy of the professional stage”, that “you can’t see a better show in the West End”, and “everybody in the company is so talented – it is hard to believe they’re not all professionals”. It is difficult not to feel very proud of ourselves, and our fabulous production duo Alan Hutchinson and David McKnight!

Many of our juniors are involved in other groups; Maisie Axton, Liv Carroll-Walsh and Evie Midgley are all involved in productions of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Kilworth House in the Summer and Nottingham’s Theatre Royal in the Autumn. Eden Wedgbrow has a part in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the newly refurbished Haymarket Theatre in Leicester and Adam Bailey is shortly to be involved in Just So at the Snibston Century Theatre. We wish them all well, and look forward to having them back with us for our April 2019 production of Pirates of Penzance – we think all our juniors will make smashing pirates!

We are also very proud of our junior members, and many of our audiences remarked that they are so engaging on-stage, and clearly love being a part of an adult theatre group.

Don’t forget we would love to hear from you too if you would like to be a part of this very friendly and inclusive theatre group – send an email to enquiries@amtg.org.uk

to our lovely audiences for supporting us, and this year, as always, we have received high praise and great reviews for our efforts.

“You Get the Most Thorough Clean Ever Seen or it’s FREE!” That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet and upholstery cleaning is the best and most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group and share details of who they are, how they help local people and any fundraising events they have coming up. This month Leonard Cheshire Disability is our chosen charity. Leonard Cheshire Disability is a charity supporting disabled people to fulfil their potential and live the lives they choose. Her Majesty The Queen has been patron of Leonard Cheshire Disability since 1980 and 2017 marked 100 years since the birth of their founder, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire. Newlands House in Netherseal is a local care home, run by the charity, and provides support to residents as well as a day service for people in the community. On Saturday 9th June their annual summer fete will be held in the beautiful parkland grounds at Newlands House (DE12 8DA). A particular highlight of the day is the Royal Air Force Flypast, in honour of their founder, Group Captain Lord Cheshire. There are also many attractions including a Fun Dog Show, Jolly Jingles, Punch and Judy, live music, craft stalls, an outdoor cafe with BBQ and lots more for all the family to enjoy.

68

Working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle on the fete, Leonard Cheshire Disability hope to raise enough funds to continue making a real difference to local people’s lives. For more details on the charity see www.leonardcheshire.org or www.facebook.com/LeonardCheshireDisability. For info on the Fete search for ‘Netherseal Family Fun Fete’ on Facebook.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS

Ashby-based ‘The Flooring And Bed Company – Fabco’ gets a Twitter Boost from Theo Paphitis An Ashby De La Zouch‐based firm has received

a business boost from Retail Entrepreneur Theo Paphitis. Last week, Fabco tweeted Theo about their business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by Theo to his 500,000 Twitter followers. The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has over 2200 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK. Business and retail entrepreneur, Theo retweeted Fabco’s message to his almost 500,000 followers and as a result, @Flooringandbed has 100’s more followers and extra orders for their home interior and furnishing products, and they only won this recognition 2 days ago!! Tony & Ed of Fabco said, “We’ve only been in business 3 1/2 years and have received fabulous support from the local people of Ashby and the surrounding villages. It’s great to have support from Theo because it’s been tough trying to raise our profile and Theo has recognised our

hard work and helped spread the word about what we do to his following.” Small business champion, Theo Paphitis, said: “We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; likeminded individuals who can share successes and learnings. The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish The Flooring And Bed Company - Fabco every success.” For further information about Small Business Sunday please visit www.theopaphitissbs.com

BO ODY MATTERS

Sports Injuries It’s that time e of year again when the weekend sportsperso on jumps out of us and starts to demand more of ourr bodies. The weather is improving and we feel we should be out there, hitting a cricket ball for four, serving an ace, or ro olling the first of the outdoor bowls down on one knee. This iss a crucial time for the coming season, yes for good team results, but also for preparing our body for the rigours of sp port. Most injuriess can be put down to three major causes; poor preparation, inadequate stretching, or just bad luck. POOR PREPARATION As a weekend d sportsperson myself I see many levels of preparatio on within a small group of people. Most of us begin our sporting careers in our teens, a time when muscle es are supple, bones are very flexible and still grow wing, cartilage is thick and shiny, and work related idiosyncrasies are in the distant future. In short, you can get away with it! As your skeleton and muscles age you develop areas of weakness, which leave you prone to damage through these regions. Problems such as previous muscle tears, ligament sprains, and the fact that most people enter into relatively repetitive work patterns mean that the overall health of the musculo-skeletal system will diminish. In clinic, it is these idiosyncrasies that as an Osteopath I am trained to look out for and treat. To help limit the negative effects that these have on your body whilst you exercise you must go through a gradual warm-up program to engage the muscles and joints that are normally left in a more dormant phase. INADEQUATE STRETCHING It is generally only wise to stretch muscles once they are warm, i.e. after exercising or at least warming up, as this prevents more severe muscle tears, tendon irritation and joint trauma. Specific areas on different people may need to hold more focus as posture and work can alter individual morphology.

76

For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book an appointment please call Tristan Hill or Sarah Kavanagh on 01530 440 442 or e-mail contact@ashbyosteopath.com or please feel free to visit www.ashbyosteopath.co.uk BAD LUCK No amount of warming up or stretching can prevent certain injuries, such as a sprained ankle due to an unexpected divot on the pitch, or broken bone due to trauma in a tackle. These are unlucky incidents and should be dealt with correctly to prevent them becoming a future cause of something insidious and often more difficult to treat. The important thing is to be aware that the longer an issue lasts the more impact it will have on the rest of your body, so the faster a condition is diagnosed and treated the better it is for the long term sports person in you. As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition.

HEARTWOOD COMMUNITY WOODFUEL GROUP

Heartwood in the Heart of the National Forest We are very lucky to live here in the heart of the National Forest and we can enjoy it because of volunteer groups such as Heartwood Community Woodfuel Group who work tirelessly to maintain the woodlands in partnership with the National Forest itself. The group was created in March 2015 as part of the Black to Green Project and has now grown into a 90 strong team of volunteers. The 2017/18 felling season saw Heartwood plan and lead the entire winter programme of felling within three woodlands – Willesley Wood, Donisthorpe Woodland Park & Sarah’s Wood. Heartwood members work on a “logs for labour” basis, felling and processing the thinnings and taking a boot-full of logs home for their efforts. The strategic direction of the group is aligned to that of the National Forest, to bring more and more of the woodlands into management using volunteer resource. A five-year plan is also being negotiated

with the Woodland Trust to secure management of a number of woodlands within the National Forest owned by the trust. All of this will mean significant growth for the group over the coming years, giving opportunities for volunteers to spend more and more productive time in the woods, fuelling their log burners and their souls with all the good things being in the woods means to us. If you are interested in the group please visit their webpage www.heartwoodhof.org.uk or contact them on chairman@heartwoodhof.org.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN

Palm trees

Having had a splash of summer weather I shall continue my series about trees by discussing some tropical looking options. Some ‘Palm’ trees such as, Trachycarpus fortunei, the Cabbage Palm also known as the Torbay Palm, it has large fan shaped dark green leaves and is hardy. It has the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a wonderful structural plant, great for creating a tropical holiday feel in a garden. This particular tree originates from China and survives up to minus 12 degrees and will stand a windy coastal location, but not cold northerly winds. Trachycarpus fortunei is not actually a Palm even though it looks like it is. Readily available, you can buy on line or through specialist nurseries such as bigplantnursery.co.uk. Similarly Trithinax campestris is also hardy and is grown throughout the UK and will give a ‘tropical’ feel to a planting scheme and is useful as it will also put up with a heavy soil which we tend to have locally. For a ‘moveable’ tropical scene try Chamaerops humilis (Dwarf Mediterranean fan palm) in a nice pot. This striking specimen tolerates some shade,

ad so is useful if you do not have a south facing spot but still want to give the impression of a hot climate. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and is hardy. Alternatively Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) is very elegant and also has the AGM and will be OK in a pot for a couple of years. The latter is not fully hardy but if it is in a pot, can be moved around to a sheltered position in winter months and be given added protection from the cold. Free draining soil (not our local clay) is generally necessary for a Palm’s success. If you do plant into clay soil then work in a lot of compost, grit and sand to help with drainage and prevent the roots sitting in water during the winter. The Palms generally should be placed in full sun and will need watering while the roots establish and until the new leaves grow, but then are generally drought tolerant. To tidy the plant and keep it neat, cut off dead foliage in spring. To protect the non hardy plants in winter you should tie the palm leaves together to protect the crown of the plant. For most Palms the growth comes from the crown which is why it is important to protect this area from cold winter temperatures, wet and snow. In addition the crown can be packed with straw and a fleece tied around the whole plant.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Leicestershire and d South Noon Column Derbyshire y 1

TThis Noon Column is situated vvery much in the heart of the N National Forest at Sence Valley FForest Park. It is easy to spot, being b sited right alongside tthe car park as you enter the park. The dark colours of both the column and the surround perfectly reflect the huge influence that mining has had on this area. It is a wonderful way to contrast the past with the present and d show what a difference planting the National Forest has made - walkers leaving the column can choose between tw exploring the lakes and streams of Sence Valley, le or taking the National Forest Way across the fields to t either Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve or The Diamond on Jubilee Wood. Our walk follows part a of the National n Forest Way before turning back across farmland to enter e Sence Valley. We then meander around the lakes and back to the Noon Column. Allow a little over an hour for your walk.

2

The walk starts from the main (top) car park at Sence Valley Forest Park - this is accessed from the A447 between Ravenstone and Ibstock (look out for the green sign on the main road just outside Ibstock). For Sat Nav users the nearest postcode is LE67 6NW. You will see the Noon Column on your right i h as you enter the car park. Head back towards the car park entrance/exit, passing by the Noon Column (1) on your left - you u will see a narrow hard path that runs alongside the access road. Take this path and follow it as itt bends round to b the left just before reaching the main n road. The path runs through the trees parallel to the th road for a short way before reaching a wooden ba barrier leading onto a bridleway. You have now reached h the National Forest Way. Turn left and follow the bridleway b downhill, remaining on it to go

3

down through the dip and cross over a pretty stre eam e (2) that feeds into the lakes e off SSence Valley. Shortly after crossing ov over the stream, as you start back uphill, there is a footpath sign leading off to the e left. Follow this sign over a stile and around a field edge. The path kinks left after a little e while to cross another stile - taking you back ac into Sence Valley Forest Park. After crossing the stile turn right and walk for about 20 yardss b before taking a path on your left that runs through the trees (3) giving glimpses of Stonebridge Lake e off to your left. You will soon come m to o a fork in the pa path - the left hand fork leads off to the birrd hide (you might want to take a minute to see what w you u can spot out u on the water) - to continue your wallk you need tto take the right hand fork. The path th now w twists a little t before crossing an atttractive arched h bri brid dge and th then meetting a wide, hard path. Tu urn left along the hard path to arrive at a T Junction ct with Horseshoe e Lake straight ahead of you. Turn rig ght and walk around with the lake on your leftt haand side e until you come to a stone bridge (4). Im mmediately a after crossing the bridge turn left to ontinue around the opposite side of Horseshoe co o Ignore a fork off to your right, which leads LLake. Ig d up the hill, ll and keep on around the lake until you pass shelter. a wooden o SStraightt after the shelter turn right onto n a narrow path which twists back b and forwards leading you steeply uphill (5) - there are a couple pl of handy benches on the way iif you need a rest. At the top of th this path go past the wooden barriers ar and bear left to come back into the far end of the car park.

All walks are checked before publication but please be awaare that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

Lazy Days Wish List

Planning to stock up on books for lazy days in the sun? Add these to your wish list… The Trick to Time Kit de Waal Mona leads a quiet life in a seaside town – making her dolls, visiting the carpenter and helping grieving mothers. But how did she get here? What happened to the spirited young woman who set out seeking adventure, and the man she fell in love with? A beautiful read with engaging characters that covers issues as diverse as grief, immigration, mental illness and love.

The Possible World Liese O’Halloran Schwarz After his mother is killed, six year old Ben tells people that his real name is Leo, and that he has another mother. But no one believes him. Doctor Lucy is struggling to come to terms with her marriage breakup when she first meets the little boy. Clare is approaching her 100th birthday and decides to tell someone the story of her life before it’s too late. Three separate characters, whose stories (past, present or future) are interlinked. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Finding Gobi Dion Leonard This is the story of ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard and the small stray dog that joined him on his 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert. Dion becomes determined to offer the dog a home, but there’s an awful lot of red tape to get through, and then the dog disappears. This Sunday Times bestseller has also been rewritten as a picture book and as a young readers’ book, so do make sure you order the right version!

Modern Women: 52 Pioneers Kira Cochrane Modern Women is a celebration of some of the women who have shaped society and changed lives. Women such as Tegla Loroupe, who grew up with 24 siblings and halfsiblings in Kenya, went on to win numerous marathons, and now runs a sports training programme for refugees. Activists, athletes, filmmakers and even a circus strongwoman make up the 52. You’ll read about well-known women as well as women who have been all but forgotten. In each case Cochrane has managed to unearth something new and inspiring. A fascinating read you’ll want to dip into time and time again.

Now You See Her Heidi Perks Charlotte only took her eyes off the little girl for a few minutes but when she doesn’t turn up, Charlotte is ostracised by the community and blamed by the media. And, of course, the little girl’s mother is never going to forgive her. But then the two women come under police investigation and something isn’t quite as it seems. A tension-filled thriller, with plenty of twists and turns.

All Things Bright and Strange James Markert In the wake of WWI, Ellsworth Newberry is grieving for his wife and just wants to be left alone. But when a strange chapel is unearthed in the woods, Ellsworth may be the only one who can lead his community in a fight against an unknown, unseen enemy. Part Christian fiction, part horror, part historical fiction, All Things Bright and Strange starts strongly, but gets lost a little bit along the way.

Surprises

Most people like good surprises. You know, the ones that are thought through, intended to give pleasure, show us that someone cares and understands what makes us happy. However, sadly there are those other surprises in daily life that are not planned and we could really do without. The accident that shocks and leaves us hurt, the unexpected announcement that changes someone’s life and has repercussions for the whole family, the sudden illness or diagnosis that changes our life and expectations. Surprises really do come in all shapes and sizes. We’re all creatures of habit and routine to some extent, so it’s often the other surprises that can turn our lives upside-down, cause stress, upset and anxiety. Sometimes, particularly after the event, we surprise ourselves by feeling perversely glad for the bad surprise and unexpected event.Maybe the situation

104

returned our focus to the important things in life, particularly family. Perhaps it changed our direction or path, made us a stronger person or just made us extremely grateful that we could dust ourselves down and walk away from what has happened with no serious long-term problems. Throughout life many of us find the constant presence of God and having a faith in him to be a comfort, guide and a strengthening force of help. This all stems from knowing God, understanding him and developing a relationship with him. Through this we can start to recognise his care and guidance in our surprisingly turbulent lives, realising that bizarre unforeseen things do happen for a reason and a genuine inner peace is achieved through placing our trust in him. PET’S CORNER

Helping Your Dog Dea eal with the Heat of Summer Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat throug gh their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal.

• Your dog has ready access to shade, and plenty of cool drinking water. • You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day.

So how do you prevent heat stroke, what are e the symptoms, and what can you do to help? Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include: • Rapid breathing • Heavy panting • Lethargy • Agitation or disorientation • Drooling • Vomiting and/or diarrhoea • Fitting/seizures

What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency, even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of time, and fast action can save their life even if you think everything is fine.

Preventing a disaster Being aware that your dog is very susceptible g to heat stroke is a major factor in preventing it. You should make sure that: m • They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day.

ROADSHOW

COMES TO TOWN Krugerrand

Breitling

THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in Legion House, 15 South Street, Ashby De La Zouch, LE65 1BQ and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.

Amber Urgently Required

Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.

110

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

So, on Monday 11th September you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES – LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Amber and Jade, costume jewellery – high prices paid. WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO VISIT For further information or an appointment please contact us on: 07930 157 944 any time. Our format is exactly the same, but we offer the chance to sell without the uncertainty and commission to the Auction House and if you are unsuccessful at auction there may still be charges to pay. East Midlands Antiques realise that there are some very unusual items that require the exposure of a major auction house and we would be pleased to advise in such cases. However many items do not warrant this and East Midlands Antiques will offer accordingly. Come and try the friendly and discreet service we have provided for many other people like yourselves over the years.

Bla lac acckk too pla lay ay and annd mat maattee inn 5 Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) Lasker was world champion for 27 years, a feat unusual in any sport. His success was partly due to understanding his opponents’ psychological weaknesses. Here is a position from a rare loss by Lasker. It’s from his 1908 world championship match against Dr Siegbert Tarrash (1862-1934). It’s Black to play and mate in 5. Tarrash couldn’t find the mate, and won with 1...Qa5+ instead. Can you do better? Winning and losing are part of any sport. To test if you are able to win, why not try your hand at our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club? Beginners are welcome. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!

Cloudy Clear nnounce rusted rader artnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
