COMMUNITY NEWS
Blackfordby
Open Gardens Weekend June 30th/July 1st Tucked into the north westernmost corner of Leicestershire - just two miles from Ashby in one direction across the National Forest and also from Swadlincote in the other - lies the small village of Blackfordby, complete with its listed village pub, church and primary school. And on the weekend of June 30th/July 1st, Blackfordby is cast into the spotlight to stage its first ever Open Gardens event. The weekend is likely to feature around 20 local gardens open to visitors with entry by wristband (available from the village hall off Main Street) for just £4 on either day. Monies raised will go to local charities and gardens will be open on both days between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm. Please note that some gardens do not have wheelchair access and no dogs (other than guide dogs) are allowed. Children under 16 are free but need to be accompanied by an adult. Blackfordby Open Gardens chairman for 2018 Brian Hammond said: “We’ve watched with interest the established open garden schemes in the area, notably in Ashby and Swannington and a group of villagers got together and thought we would give it a try ourselves. Who knows what will happen in future years, but it looks very promising indeed that we will continue for years to come.”

ASHBY ARTS FESTIVAL
A Week of
Art and Performance for All! Ashby Arts Festival is a community event, run by volunteers, which takes place each year in the May half term week. It has been around now for over 13 years and is most well known for its giant outdoor gallery of huge 8 by 4 foot artworks displayed on buildings, businesses and schools all around the town centre. This year the theme is “Transport through the Ages” and includes a children’s section with a series of 4 foot square boards on display in Huntingdon Court. Our Art about Town map guides you around them all. We have amazing galleries open around town over the Bank Holiday Weekend including our Festival Galleries at Ivanhoe College which host our annual Art and Photography Exhibitions and our “Art Café” with demos and great cake! This year we are thrilled to have the acclaimed Famous 50 exhibition, coming straight from the Hepworth at Wakefield to the beautiful and historic setting of St Helens Church. The full festival programme also includes a wide variety of theatre, film, music, workshops and performances for all ages. The 2018 festival includes the first ever Funhouse Comedy Club - Festival Special. A laughter filled evening is guaranteed with a great line up of comics including Steve Royle as seen on Live at the Palladium and Peter Kay’s Phoenix nights. With so much to choose from, you are sure to find plenty of interest over this lively week! Communities defeat terrorism Leicestershire Police needs your keen instincts to help tackle terrorism. If it just doesn’t feel right, report it — you could save lives. Communities defeat terrorism – this is the concept being emphasised during a four-week national counter-terrorism campaign which started on Tuesday 20th March, and which is being supported here in the East Midlands. Since March 2017, the national counter terrorism (CT) network has stopped 10 attacks — 23 in the last four years. There are around 600 live investigations involving 3,000 individuals, with 20,000 others posing a continuing concern. Last year (January to December 2017) there were 466 CT arrests nationally, marking a 35% increase, largely attributed to the attacks in London and Manchester. Of those arrested, 65% were UK nationals and 8% were for extreme right wing activities. There were 154 people convicted of terrorism offences and 850 people were recorded to have travelled to Syria or Iraq to take part in the conflict. The themes set out by these national statistics are reflected in the East Midlands. Recent years have seen convictions in the region for those seeking to join terrorist groups overseas, keeping a bomb-making manual while stockpiling chemicals and radicalising children by showing them extremist material. Most recently a man from Derby was given a life sentence for attempting to build a bomb.
may realise. And you will often have a better instinct for what just doesn’t feel right in what is otherwise a normal day for you. ” “We need your understanding about a person, your knowledge of a place, your take on an event to be able to better recognise what might be unusual or suspicious activity.” “Even the smallest piece of information could be important, as it could add to a developing pattern of behaviour. If you have any suspicions we need to hear about them.”
But it is the vital contributions from the community that ultimately defeat terrorism.
Chief Constable Simon Cole said: “It is communities that defeat terrorism. We all have a key role to play in helping to tackle terrorism. Local people are the eyes and ears in our communities and I would urge everyone across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to always remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activity. ”
Detective Superintendent Mark Pollock heads up the East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s Special Branch (EMSOU-SB). He said: “A year on from the attack at Westminster I would like to remind you, the public, of the great influence you can have on stopping terrorism. ”
No call or click will be ignored. You are not wasting our time, and we will only take action after the appropriate checks have been carried out.
Our officers and staff also provided investigative support following last year’s attacks in London and Manchester.
“We very much view the tackling of terrorism and domestic extremism as a role for the entire community. We already enlist the help of a raft of partner agencies and community groups in a bid to provide a comprehensive approach, but the power to defeat terrorism also lies in your hands.” “You are privy to a lot more information than you

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
Mease and Sence 1
Noon Column No
TThe Mease and Sence Noon Column is sited within C Grangewood, between Overseaal and Coton in the Elms. The shape of this, our fourth column, is carved to celebrate the ch church rch spires p which hic can be viewed from the open farmland within th this area. Grangewood is a large area which combines young plantations with some lovely mature woodland nd - it is possible to amble for hours and get quite lost here so make sure to follow the directions carefully. O Our walk takes around an hour and includes a short section of the National Forest Way - we visit the noon column m near the end of the walk. The walk starts from the car park for Grangewood Farm Forestry which is on the he road that leads from Overseal to Coton in the Elms. To find the car park you need to pass by Grangewood o Farm on your right, heading towards Coton on the Elms. l The car park for walkers is situated a little further along this road on your right hand side, it is marked by a green signboard. For Sat Nav users the nearest postcode is DE12 8BG.
2
There are two exits from the car parkk into the woodland, you need to use the one which is closest to the car park entrance (1). Immediately you leave the car park the path splits take the right hand path and then quickly fork rk right onto a path of wood chip laid between logs (2) ( which leads to a small fishing pond. Walk around the th left of the pond and then follow the wide grass ride ahead keeping the open area on your left and horse h jump off to your right. Stay on this path as it bears left to go o between b two more horse jumps and arrives at a yellow footpath marker post. Follow the arrow down ow a tree lined path. Ignore paths leading off to either side and keep straight on, passing by two more o yellow marker posts. After the third post you enter mature broadleaved woodlaand (3) where the path th meanders through the
3
trees to arrive at a sign for Top Wood. Go through the gap by the sign to a post marking th the routes of two public footpaths o s - follow the one which goes straight ahead. At the crossroads of paths (reached re before the wooden gate) turn left onto the National Forest Way. After a short distance you go through a gate leading onto a drive v to pass by Woodridge Barn. As the drive startss to bear right look to your left where you will see a stile leading off the drive and onto a path crossing s the end of the paddocks. Follow th his path over 4 sstiles to reach a 5th stile which is situ uated on your ur left hand side (4). Turn left, crossing n the e stile, and then h follow the path straight ahead of you u. When you pass by the back of the wooden n sign wh hich indicates at you are leavin ng Top Wood, you need ne to kink to the he left before continuing ahead so you are waalkking alongside mature trees on your left. Ke eep an ey eye out for a gap on your left (beside a large oak tree) - again you need to kink left, going n th hrough tthe gap, and then continuing parallel tto he path you were on but now with the hedgerow th on your o ur right. As you walk keep an eye out through o the trees e on your left and you will soon see an open aarea and, near the bottom of it, the noon column um (5). Y You can (5) c access this area via a short track through u the trees just past the column. After vi visiting the column return to the path yyou were on and keep straight ahead, d crossing over a wide grass ride.. TThe path will lead down to a T junction where it meets the hedgerow alongside on the road. Turn left here to return t to the far end of the car park. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware thatt paths may change over time and with the seasons.

enjoy soup, a ham and cheese ploughman’s, posh puddings and tea or coffee. There are a few ways you can be involved. You can volunteer to deliver the envelopes, be a collection point for the envelopes or knock on doors collecting them. If you’re part of a group, for example bible study, toddlers or lunch club, perhaps you’d consider doing this together. Speak to one of the Christian Aid representatives at either of the events to find out more. Door to door collections in 2017 raised £7,526.86, with one donation of £1,000 being given from one house! The total amount raised overall from Ashby District last year was £10,713.80. We are extremely grateful to the generous people in our community for all they give and do.

Magnificent Magnolias
The name Magnolia comes from a famous French botanist called Pierre Magnol (1638 to 1715). Magnolia is a genus which is ancient, as proven by fossilised specimens which date back 20 million years.
Today Magnolias are a very popular tree and there is an International Magnolia Society that presently has a record of 200 species, with new species and varieties being developed all the time. You may have recently seen Magnolia trees and bushes in flower. It is a stately looking flower, proud and upright, generously spread across the canopy of the tree with colours varying from pure white to magenta. This tree will do well in most soils so long as they are not in alkaline soil or a dry position. This means that locally in Leicestershire conditions are good with magnificent specimens growing in our acid soil. Magnolia trees can live for 100 years. Pollination is by beetles that are attracted by the very sweet-smelling flowers. Pruning should only be done in midsummer or autumn if your Magnolia is deciduous, however if it is evergreen then prune in spring. The Magnolia flower is said to represent, dignity and nobility. Even today in China the flowers are thought

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 of as symbols of womanly beauty and gentleness, the ‘Yin’ or the feminine side of life. Traditionally wedding bouquets in South America would include Magnolia flowers to reflect the bride’s purity and nobility. Much loved in America, the Magnolia grandiflora is the state tree of Mississippi. Newly planted trees can take several years before they flower and excess pruning can delay flowering. Occasionally evergreen varieties may suddenly lose lots of the leaves, which can be alarming but this is a natural process and new leaves will grow. Temperatures less than minus 5 degrees can be fatal and certainly late frosts can damage the flowers in spring. If you have a tree that fails to blossom it may be because it is in an area that is too cold and in a frost trap. In such a position the tree will survive but the flowers will not appear. Similarly, if you have planted your tree in the shade or in very poor soil which lacks nutrients there will be little chance of flowers. Should you need to transplant your tree then the roots should be pruned in spring and a rootball of about 1 meter across and deep will give a good chance of survival. A rootball this big is of course going to be very heavy, and so machinery and strops may be required to safely make such a move. As a last thought, to encourage you to have a Magnolia tree in your garden, I can advise that it is possible to make a delicious Magnolia Syrup. You will need Magnolia flowers, water and caster sugar. Do look up the method and recipe!
Happy gardening!

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
Managing anxiety and stress In our busy, stressful modern world, life feels frantic and under pressure. Being contactable 24/7 means that we’re never really off-duty. Work emails ping to our phone in the evenings and any smidgen of time gets soaked up scrolling through Facebook. Our brains are always fired up and ready. And it is in this environment that anxiety, stress and depression can thrive. One of the ways we can use to combat this is through ‘mindfulness’ – a discipline that allows the brain some quiet time, some space to think thoughts and let them pass without dwelling on things. I always wondered why God asks people to pray to him. He asks that we praise him, thank him and tell him our worries. But why would he need us to? Being an all-powerful, all-knowing God, he already knows our thoughts before we’ve thought them, let alone mentioned them in prayer. It seems that God really does know what is best for us. By asking us to meditate on him, he gives us the

blueprint for a mindful life. By asking us to express our worries and to hand them over, shows us how to let our concerns go. By giving us forgiveness, he lets us forget about our past mistakes and by asking us to forgive others, he knows that it brings mental health benefits to the forgiver as well. By being kind, you are cheered, by loving your neighbour, you are bolstered. It seems that God has given us the way to have not only an eternally happy life, but a happy and fulfilled life now. As it says in Philippians chapter 4, ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’. Useful Bible passage to look up: Philippians ch4 vs 6-9 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

YOUR WELLBEING
Revisiting those New Year resolutions
Many of us by tradition decide on changes we want to make in our lives when the New Year starts on 1st January. However, that is often the worst time. A lack of sunlight causes a drop in energy whilst cold weather can lead us to cravings for warm comfort food which may be steeped in calories (usually carbs).
This is not the time to try changing behavioural habits of over eating, eating the wrong types of food or drinking too much. Similarly we are more likely to lack the energy to start and maintain new exercise regimes. It’s no wonder that so many people revert back to their normal patterns of behaviour and then feel as though they have failed. Spring is the best time to make changes to behaviours so why not think about those New Year resolutions and start again. With longer and warmer days exercising outside is so much more appealing and practical. Eating healthy salads and fruit is not only less expensive in spring but also more appetising as we move away from the need for comfort food (sugars and starches). Replacing or delaying that first glass

of wine with a cool lime and soda (in a wine glass if preferred) or Elderflower cordial or a number of summer non-alcoholic drinks feels refreshing. There are many group programmes that can help with different goals but sometimes the behaviour may be linked to something from the past and that is when psychological therapies can help. At futureminds we are able to offer coaching/counselling/psychotherapy/ hypnotherapy and psychology to help you achieve your goals. PET’S CORNER
Three Tips for Looking After Your New Guinea Pig Guinea pigs are relatively low maintenance pets, and can be a good choice for families with young children. They’re very social animals, and careful handling from an early age not only helps to their build confidence, but also encourages human interaction. Their needs include a warm, dryy and safe space to live, plenty of room to run aro ound, and a nutrient-rich diet – here are a few tips to help your guinea pig feel loved and at home. Living Guinea pigs can live indoors or outside, but will need protection from direct sunlight and the winter cold if they’re outdoors. Make sure their hutch is protected from predators in the garden and hass a separate sleeping area that’s out of sight.
Eating Good quality, non-dusty hay should form the major part of a guinea pig’s diet, with grass, leafy greens, fruit, and small quantities of guinea pig mix added every day. It’s worth remembering that a guinea pig’s teeth grow constantly and need to be ground down on the hay or grass that you provide. Play According to th he RSPCA, guinea pigs are active for up to 20 hours a day, so providing plenty of toys is key to ke eeping them entertained, especially if you choose one guinea pig rather than a pair. Guinea pigs can live for up to eight years, so this is a long commitment regardless of the lower level off daily care they require wh hen compared with cats and dogss.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
One Play You Don’t Want To Miss! Ashby Dramatic Society will be performing An Evening of One Act Plays as part of the Ashby Arts Festival. The performance will feature a number of varied and entertaining performances and a chance to see several genres, actors and storylines all in one visit! The Ashby Arts Festival runs every summer celebrating music, theatre, art, literature and photography. Ashby Venture Theatre is usually involved in the giant outdoor gallery displaying huge artwork from a local professional or amateur artist. Similar to the Venture Theatre, the Arts Festival is a non-profit-making community organisation. The festival aims to promote all art forms and provide enjoyment to visitors and locals of Ashby De La Zouch. It is the theatre’s pleasure to take part in the festival year after year. Last year’s One Act Plays included a solo performance by Paul Smith in Looking for Love, a play set in the ‘thirty years war’, Irishmen illegally drinking in a bar after hours and even a comedy written by one of our own members, Mary Barker.
‘Make and Take’
This year is set to be another exciting and diverse programme and will be performed on the 25th and 26th of May at the Ashby Venture Theatre. The bar opens from 7pm and the plays begin at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre and are £5.

Would you like the chance to go camping, climbing, potholing, lead community projects while transforming young people's lives? As a section leader, you will do all of this and more, using your skills and learning new ones. You'll use your energy and creativity to help young people have fun, develop their potential and earn a wide range of badges and awards, including the prestigious Chief Scout Awards. FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
Transform
your body
If you’re looking to transform the way you look it’s going to take hard work and dedication. Here are Simon’s 8 top tips for helping you get the body of your dreams!
Intensity
If transforming your body was easy, then we’d all be in the best shape of our lives! However, the reality is that it takes lots and lots of hard work. One thing that can be a major contributing factor is the intensity in which you train at. You need to train, whether that be weight training or Cardio HARD. 50% effort just won’t do, you need to be training between 80-95% of your maximum. Next time you’re in the gym, step it up and give it your all!
Consistency
An often used word but don’t underestimate its power! Many transformations fail due to lack of consistency. You need to keep up your training and diet for an extended time. Depending on your starting point, and your current position you may need to keep consistent from 3-66 months to see real change.
Plan
You need to follow a well constructed plan if you’re going to get results. Structured training and progressive overload are a must. Unfortunately, you can’t just turn up to the gym and wing it. A good full body compound program is the way forward, big moves for a big calorie burn!
Quality, not quantity
By this I mean focus on the quality of your training not just how much you can lift, or how far can you run. You may have heard the saying ‘it’s the last few reps that count’, but for me, every rep has got to count! The quality of your technique is paramount, and should not be sacrificed at any point. For reps follow a 3/1 tempo. 3 seconds on the negative phase and 1 second on the positive phase.
Weights over Cardio
Straight up, weight training is better for body composition than Cardio. That said cardio has its place in a program, but for long term changes, weight, fat loss, then weight training has the edge.
Control your Calories
A major player in changing bodies is diet. You neeed to be able to fifirrstly track your food intake, to see what is currently going wrong, then secondly be able to make the right changes for your goal.

It doesn’t have to complicated, but if you’re not in good condition it’s an indicator that somethings got to change. A quick rule of thumb is focus on protein and reduce carbohydrates whilst increasing good fats.
Increase your daily activity
This can play a key role in fat loss. Give yourself a daily step count to keep you motivated. Fitbit is great, you can form a challenge group with your friend to keep you motivated to hit the count. Take stairs instead of lifts and walk or park a little further away from work.
Get a Personal Coach
In a busy world, working out can be tough. After a hard day’s work, hitting the gym, figuring out what to do and training hard can be a bit much for some. So, lighten your load and get yourself a personal coach. Let them do the thinking, let them push you through the workouts harder than you would
yourself, let them help you with your diet. A coach can keep you accountable,, focused and determined! Last but not least, track your progress and d achievements. Take progress pictures, body measurements, food diaries, it helps you to keep motivated each step of the way. To find out more about our body transformations, personal coaching and membership, or for more information and explanations on any of the above points, just give me a call or email and I’ll be happy to help. Plus, why not book in with one of my team for a free Personal training session and a Boditrax Body Composition test to see how we can help you. By Simon Pellechia Fitness Republic

MONEY MATTERS
How to deal with changing
Payroll legislation
Whether you’re a small business or a larger business, administering payroll can be a timeconsuming and complex process. Historically, payroll has been perceived as a data-processing function. However, due to the ever-changing complexities of taxation, pensions auto-enrolment, employment and data protection legislation, payroll has evolved into much more and has become an integral function of many businesses. If you are a business owner, keeping up to date and compliant can prove increasingly difficult for employers. The last 12 months alone has seen the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, increases in the National Minimum Wage (NMW), National Living Wage (NLW) and changes to the salary sacrifice scheme introduced in the latest budget. The main benefits of an outsourced payroll function include: 1. Staff cover – mitigates issues when payroll staff are on annual leave or off work due to illness, as the payroll function will operate regardless when outsourced. 2. Experienced and well-trained staff – mitigates the requirement to train staff and keep up-todate with legislative changes, employment taxes and so on. 3. Free-up time – for many small businesses in particular, outsourcing the payroll function will free-up staff time to focus on other aspects of the business. 4. Cost savings – maintaining payroll software and ensuring staff are appropriately trained can be costly and is an on-going investment in order to keep up-to-date. Outsourcing payroll eliminates this burden and can reduce overall costs. 5. Avoid penalties – there has been increasing coverage in the national press of companies being fined for payroll non-compliance, in 84
Contact us at Baldwins if you would like to know more about out-sourcing your payroll, call Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk particular failure to pay staff the NMW and NLW. Outsourcing payroll eliminates the risk of penalties being imposed. 6. Avoid technology headaches – payroll software is required to be updated on a regular basis and failure to do so could result in incorrect deductions being taken from employees and inaccurate information submitted to HM Revenue & Customs. An outsourced payroll function can also provide additional services including Construction Industry Scheme compliance, auto-enrolment administration, dealing with HM Revenue & Customs enquiries, systems training and other advisory services.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS In April the Museum welcomed the Packington Men’s Group for an afternoon. They enjoyed an illustrated talk on the history of Market Street, visited the galleries and the archive upstairs and finished with a delicious afternoon tea. The Packington and Normanton Church Ladies’ Group followed two days later with a talk on Ashby in the mid 1800s, a look round the galleries and a very good buffet lunch. The exhibition of Julie Barnett’s art runs until the end of May and is attracting lots of visitors and favourable comments. Prints of her work are selling well. The Tourist Information Centre has, over the years, built up a very good newspaper archive on Ashby. We are most grateful for their kind thoughts in passing this on to us. It will be assimilated into our archive. We have acquired a copy of a recently published book on the Mammatt surname, written by June Bird (nee Mammatt). It is a substantial book which
has been meticulously researched over the course of several years. It even features a chapter on the branch of the family which now resides in Australia. This family was an important one in the town for many years, from the early 1800s. Copies are available to order. Places on our town history walks are being taken up, so if you are interested in finding out more about the past, do sign up before it is too late. Call the museum on 01530 560090. The dates are July 4th and August 9th.

AMTG NEWS
It’s official – we’re on a break! ak! The way magazine copy writing works this article is being written three days before the Opening Night of our production of My Fair Lady! We have just spent the last three days receiving scenery, props, costumes, lighting, and have been transforming our beautiful theatre home, the 400 Hall at Repton, into scenes from London in 1912. A fantastic team of members, parents, supporters and friends have worked very hard. The days are very hectic, with so much going on, but the starting point is getting everything that has been delivered into the right place. This year, as in previous years, we have been fortunate to have two people on our team who are now working professionally in the West End. Bethan McKnight and Liam Tranter have ensured that the working parties all know what they are doing regarding staging and lighting, and they manage the days (and us!) with great skill and courtesy
– we are hugely appreciative of their time and talents. So, what next? After a short break from rehearsals, and some lovely social get-togethers, we will be back to start work on our next production –The Pirates of Penzance; Broadway version. This is a most hilarious show, obviously there are some very recognisable songs, lots of pirates, lots of humour, some misunderstandings, a few giggling daughters, a splendid Major General, and a most amusing Pirate King. Be prepared for a lot of swashing buckles! We are really looking forward to presenting Pirates of Penzance from 9th-13th April 2019 and if you would like to come and join us for our next show please contact us at enquiries@amtg.org.uk.

BOOK REVIEWS
Curl up with a book
Make the most of the longer evenings by curling up with one of this month’s top reads. The Witchfinder’s Sister Beth Underdown Alice Hopkins finds herself caught up in her brother Matthew’s war against witches in 17th century England. How far will she go to draw suspicion away from herself and those she loves? When a birthmark can be seen as evidence of witchcraft, no one is safe. Tense, atmospheric and chilling in its reimagining of historical events, The Witchfinder’s Sister makes for a gripping read. The Sealwoman’s Gift Sally Magnusson Historical fiction at its finest, The Sealwoman’s Gift is based on the true story of Ásta and her family, who were kidnapped by pirates in Iceland in 1627. Along with hundreds of other Europeans, Ásta was shipped across the globe and sold into slavery in Algiers. In this fictionalised account, Magnusson imagines how Ásta, a pastor’s wife, would have coped in a culture that was completely alien to her. In the end, Ásta has to choose between her freedom and the only child who hasn’t yet been ripped away from her. Save this book for a long train journey, because you won’t want to put it down. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Stuart Turton Groundhog Day meets Agatha Christie meets Quantum Leap in this tightly plotted debut novel. A man wakes up in the forest with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon finds out that he needs to solve a murder, and will keep reliving the day over and over again until he does so. Very clever, highly original and a real page turner to boot, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle deserves to rocket up the bestseller charts.

The Radleys Matt Haig Rowan Radley has no idea why he feels so lethargic all the time, is sensitive to light and suffers from insomnia. Until, that is, his sister kills a wouldbe attacker and Rowan’s parents reveal that the whole family are vampires. A witty, easy read from the bestselling author of The Humans and How To Stop Time, The Radleys is less gothic horror and more a gentle poke at middle-class life and the pressure put on people to conform. Not a recent release this one, but worth a mention nonetheless. Only Child Rhiannon Navin Seven year old Zach Taylor’s world changes forever when his brother is killed in a mass shooting. As his parents struggle to cope with their grief, Zach finds his own ways of dealing with his loss. A beautiful story that is as much about forgiveness and family as it is about loss. We can’t guarantee you won’t cry, but you certainly won’t forget Only Child in a hurry. The End of Loneliness Benedict Wells Jules is sent to boarding school with his siblings following the death of his parents. As his brother and sister drift away, Jules finds solace in a classmate, Alva. Spanning 40 years of loneliness, disconnection and disjointed memories, this novel touches on many themes, from dementia to grief, via hope, love and friendship. Quietly brilliant, The End of Loneliness was awarded the European Prize for Literature in 2016 and has recently been translated from German to English.

Cloudy Clear nnounce rusted rader artnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020
DIVIDEND ALLOWANCE REDUCTION FROM APRIL 2018 In the Summer Budget 2015, the government announced that dividend taxation would be reformed from April 2016 by replacing the Dividend Tax Credit with a £5,000 dividend allowance and increasing the rates of tax payable on dividends in excess of the new allowance by 7.5 percentage points in each band, to 7.5% for basic rate, 32.5% for higher rate, and 38.1% for additional rate. Previously, a basic rate taxpayer paid no tax on their dividend income; only higher rate or additional rate taxpayers paid tax on their dividend income. INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES AFFECTED In the Spring Budget 2017, it was announced that the £5,000 dividend allowance would be reduced from £5,000 to just £2,000 for dividends paid on or after 6 April 2018. The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, said that the reduction was designed to “address the unfairness” around the dividend allowance, which he described as “an extremely generous tax break for investors with substantial share portfolios.” He said that about half the people affected by the reduction in the allowance were directors and shareholders in private companies.
108
The cut in dividend allowance is likely to have a significant effect if you are a company director and take dividends as part of your remuneration package. Self-employed people often provide their services through companies, paying themselves a small salary which they top up with dividends to reduce their tax bill. This change will directly affect those individuals with investments that are held outside tax-efficient wrappers such as ISAs and produce more than £2,000 of annual dividends. One of the ways to mitigate this tax hike is to make full use of tax-efficient wrappers, putting your investments into an ISA or a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) if these products suit your investment needs and objectives. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. CHESS PUZZLE
Bla lac acckk too pla lay ay and annd mat maattee inn 7 This position is from the game Georg Meier (Germany) v. Fabiano Caruana (ItalianAmerican), played in Grenke, April 2018. It’s Black to play and mate in 7. Fabiano is 25 and will challenge Magnus Carlsen for the world chess championship in November. Magnus is like the Usain Bolt of the chess world and wins most of his matches and tournaments. Both players have an aggressive, ‘I’m going to sort you out’ playing style, so it should be a good match. Fabiano started chess at 5 and was a grandmaster by the age of 15. Whether you are young or old, please come to our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Beginners welcome. Junior coaching is from 6.15 pm, also Thursdays. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 116 - should you need it!
