ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

The Museum will be holding its biennial quiz at the Memorial Hall in Packington on Friday 2nd November. Teams of 6 are required and the quiz will begin at 6.45pm prompt. The evening includes a fish and chip supper and is a popular event in our calendar. To reserve a place and order your meal (a vegetarian option is available) please pick up a booking form from the Museum, North Street, and return it by Tuesday October 30th at the latest, along with your payment. The cost is £12 per person. Don’t worry if you aren’t part of a team as we can find you one to join on the night. Our range of Christmas cards, all depicting a scene from Ashby’s history in a seasonal setting, are now available from the Museum shop. This year we have a lovely new additional design produced by the artist, Di Lorriman. The cards always sell well as they are quite unique to our town. Trevor Stewart has published a new history book entitled ‘A Social and Industrial History Study based upon Staunton Harold, Lount, Dimminsdale and Heather, plus the Ragdale and Chartley Castle Estates’. This is an extremely detailed and wellresearched book, enhanced by a wealth of old photographs. Our current temporary exhibition has been mounted by Ashby Civic Society and will highlight its history, its aims and its achievements. It will run until Saturday November 3rd. Following on, the temporary exhibition for the

rest of the year focuses on Ashby and District’s involvement in the Armistice and the end of World War 1 commemorations. A sombre list details the names of men, not only those who died, but those who returned. The Museum was represented at the recent North West Leicestershire afternoon tea at the Radisson Blu hotel, Castle Donington in an event thanking volunteers for their commitment. We also took part, on Saturday October 6th, in AshbyFABulous. Staff at the Museum are working on three information boards to be placed in the town, relating to the Loudoun Memorial in Bath Street, Hood Park and the cemetery on Moira Road. More details will follow soon.

When the first issue of Ashby Life was launched back in November 2005 reaching the milestone of celebrating the 150th issue would have been hardly imaginable. Liz Roberts launched the magazine, from her home, with 32 pages in the first issue and delivery to 2,800 homes in Ashby. As she explained in the very first editor’s letter - this is an independent publication produced in Ashby for the residents and businesses of the area. The concept of a ‘community magazine’ has held strong ever since and remains at the heart of all we do. Undoubtedly, this has proven to be one of its greatest strengths and is one of the main reasons I was so keen to carry on Liz’s work and become editor when she retired at the end of 2015. Today we deliver 6,900 copies each month and have grown to 128 pages. Now a team of four, we are based at Rockleigh House Business Centre on Burton Road in Ashby. Our business directory is bigger than ever with 170 businesses advertising from plumbers

to garden centres, physiotherapists to pet sitters. The variety is huge. Alongside this we work tirelessly to bring you details of as many local events, community groups and fundraisers as we can. There’s no shortage of events happening here in Ashby or the surrounding areas – every month we’re spoilt for choice. Plus local organisations such as Ashby Library, Ashby Museum, Venture Theatre and Castle Medical Group kindly provide us with their latest info each month. The support we have from all corners of the community keeps us going whether it’s local businesses, community groups, or of course, you our readers. A big thank you to each and every one of you and here’s to another 150 issues!!

Sunday 11th November Remembrance Parade from Ivanhoe College, departing at 9am, led by the Reformed Donisthorpe Reunion Marching Band. ‘The Annual Service of Remembrance’ at St Helen’s Church and an ‘All Age Service’ at Holy Trinity Church both at 9.30am. Uniformed organisations will then parade through town to the ‘Wreath Laying Ceremony’ at the War Memorial in Market Street at 10.45am.

The National Beacon Lighting to celebrate the centenary of the ending of WW1 will be held at St Helens Churchyard:6.55pm “Last Post” 7.00pm Beacon Lighting ceremony. 7.05pm A Peal of Church Bells Ring Out in celebration. Saturday 17th November 2pm to 5pm. Afternoon Tea & Entertainment for Service Veterans at Ivanhoe College organised by Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle and NW Leics District Council. As a mark of respect to the fantastic work of our Armed Forces, free tickets are available to all Service Veterans who apply by Sunday 28th October. Foot Files: ATHLETE’S FOOT Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection of the skin that can occur in between toes and on the bottom of your feet. HOW IS IT SPREAD? Athlete’s foot is spread via direct contact and commonly picked up in communal areas such as gyms or swimming baths. It has also been known that towel sharing can also spread the fungus. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS? People with athlete’s foot can suffer with dry, ﬂakey skin that appears red and itches. In severe cases the skin may even blister or split most commonly in between the 3rd and 4th toe. MANAGEMENT OF THE CONDITION • Good foot hygiene, keep feet dry and change socks on a daily basis.

• Do not share towels. • Wear ﬂip-ﬂops in communal areas to prevent spread of the fungus. • Use of an antifungal cream on the skin such as Lamisil or Daktarin to treat infection normally for 1-2weeks. • Use of antifungal powder in shoes to prevent re-infection. • Note please consult your Doctor or Pharmacist before the commencement of any new creams or medication.

Roberts Travel Group and their customers raise £900 for local charities Roberts Travel Group based at The Limes, Midland Road, Hugglescote hold a number of social, coffee mornings throughout the “winter months” (from October through to April). These are very friendly informal gatherings where customers get the chance to get together, enjoy some refreshments, play a game or two of bingo and have a raffle to finish off the morning. They also have invited speakers from time to time and very interesting videos of their favourite travel destinations. The proceeds from the bingo and raffle are always donated to good causes, preferably locally based ones and for this year Roberts have donated £900 split equally between Air Ambulance, Hospice Hope and Olivia’s Journey. Samantha Woolley, Coach Holidays Manager said “We are proud to be part of local fundraising and are very grateful to our loyal customers who attend these coffee mornings and enable us to help others where we can.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS A big welcome to our newest contributors; TCV - the community volunteering charity. Through their work, green spaces are protected and improved, for nature and people across the UK. Kay Thompson explains; ‘We are active in the National Forest, helping manage outdoor spaces – whilst getting exercise with good company as well! To find TCV events local to you, go to www.tcv.org.uk/volunteering and input your postcode. Now that the dormant season for trees has arrived, TCV’s National Forest volunteers will be busy cutting back trees and shrubs to keep paths open and carrying out thinning work in the young woodlands. But we will also be thinking about community orchards, because now is the time to prune fruit trees. Pruning is done to keep the trees healthy and productive – and will even lengthen their lifespan! The aim is to keep the trees open and airy, to prevent fungal diseases, and to remove any

diseased and dying twigs and branches before they infect the rest of the tree. Fruit pruning is based on very simple principles and is easy to learn – look online for advice, or come to TCV’s FREE fruit pruning course on 7th December at Overseal. This is a one-day course, subsidised by the National Forest Company, and aims to give participants the confidence to tackle pruning young, fruiting or neglected apple and pear trees. Anyone with a fruit tree of their own, as well as people involved in community orchards, are welcome. To book on the course, contact me, kay.thompson@ tcv.org.uk. I will be back next month with more about conservation work in our local area.’

allo Halloween has grown in the UK, both in popularity and commercially over the past few years. But where did Halloween originate? It stands for All Hallows E[v]en (evening) and stems from ancient pagan practices with some Celtic influences added for good measure. The word “hallow” is a little old-fashioned but it simply means to make holy or dedicate. Some of you may remember the opening words to The Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name…” Here Jesus was teaching that God’s Name was holy, something to be honoured and revered. It’s tempting to think therefore that holiness is beyond our reach; the realm of the divine rather than anything that mere mortals can achieve. But nothing could be further from the truth. In fact

ee God says that he wants true believers to be holy just like Him. So how do we make that transition? How do we go from ordinary, everyday folk to become holy and sacred? Holiness is a state of mind supported by corresponding behaviour. In simple terms, holiness is about being separate for God. It starts by choosing to be different, by expanding our thinking to consider the needs of others, by being genuine. I suspect that for the rest of the year we all like to wear a mask but below the surface is the real us. And it is that soul, that life that God wants to transform and change to be holy just like Him. What ma es a ood hysio or herapist Simon from Vitalize Physiotherapy shares his thoughts with us this month. ‘There are many different types of physiotherapist out there. Each one will have different experiences, different ways of working and different philosophies. On top of that there are also other types of therapist such as osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists, sports therapists…. the list goes on and on. For me, a good therapist is one that empowers the client by providing information that allows them to be in control of their recovery. This should start from the very first session, the assessment. A good therapist should listen to the patient closely and once a diagnosis has been formed, ensure the client knows what’s going on and the different treatment options. The client and therapist should work together to form a plan. It has been shown that clients who have a good understanding of their condition and are involved in selecting treatment options improve more quickly. A good therapist will teach the client how to selfmanage their problem through a combination of exercises and lifestyle modifications. The ultimate aim

should be to help maximise an individual’s physical potential so they reach a point where they do not need treatment. Some conditions will take longer than others to reach this point and in some cases a client may need to return for ‘top-up’ sessions but regardless of this each client should be ‘armed’ with a variety of individual exercises or advice that helps to manage their issue. ‘ Simon Noad, Vitalize Physiotherapy (located in Bluestone Fitness, Smisby Road, Ashby.)

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS Here at Ashby Venture Theatre we have recently announced our February production – ‘London Assurance’. Following the courtships and disguises of its satirical, farcical characters, London Assurance is a merry parade of wittily constructed skirmishes between love and money, town and country, nature and artifice. Dion Boucicault wrote the restoration comedy, his second play, in 1841. Audience goers who loved our production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest are bound to enjoy this earlier comedy. Tickets are also available for our upcoming production of ‘Bracken Moor’. Set in Yorkshire, the spirit of a young boy haunts the Pritchard family and their guests. Come and see this theatrical ghost story on the 29th or 30th November or 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th December. Don’t forget the Ashby Venture Theatre Jazz club! As always it’s a good idea to keep a keen eye on our church website (sthelensashby.net) and our Heritage Project website (sthelensheritage.co.uk) Of course, most importantly of all, this November we will host events to mark 100 years since the end of World War I. One of the many blessings of being this town’s church is that we are right at the heart of such special occasions. On 11th November, as always on Remembrance Sunday, our morning service begins at 9.30am in church, then we proceed down Market Street for a ceremony at the town’s war memorial which starts at 10.50am, and includes the two minute silence at 11am. To be in such a large gathering and for everyone to be completely quiet is always most moving. And to know that it is happening all across the land at the very same moment is particularly affecting.

Gertrude Jekyll

(1843-1932)

Pioneer Garden Designer

Famous Edwardian garden designer Gertrude Jekyll would be 175 years old this November if it were possible to live that long. She was famous for gardens such as Hestercombe in Somerset. The beautiful garden that she created here does most definitely live on. Fortunately for Hestercombe, the original plans for the garden planting were found decades after Jekyll’s death. They were discovered rolled up in a potting shed. The garden has been restored to its original design. The garden plans are now held by Berkeley University in California. Part of Jekyll’s success was the partnership with architect; Edwin Lutyens. This partnership combined the formal and symmetrical lines of Lutyen’s new buildings with Jekyll’s softer, informal and romantic style of planting and use of colour. Lutyen took advantage of changes in levels and slopes to create areas for sunken gardens and rills through which water would flow. Pergolas were also used to put structure into the garden and create a framework for climbing plants. At the time, the looser style of planting, often without symmetry was regarded as ‘good taste’. It was a far cry from the formal Victorian style yle b before.

Jekyll’s style, which was clearly hugely fashionable in her time, is something that is still a huge influence today and still seen in Chelsea Show gardens every year. Sensible principals, such as the right plant for the right place, will give a garden longevity. Not just grand new houses, but modest homes suited the style of cottage garden planting that was such a contrast to Victorian bedding styles. Jekyll’s care in the planning of the plants was aimed to ensure a succession of colour and leaf interest for as much of the year as possible. To propagate plants, the use of a greenhouse was maximised. Seedlings and cuttings would be brought on to plant out, and give colour for as long as possible. The borders were carefully planned with plants matching and complementing in colour. This is still a good time of year to plant spring bulbs and ensure a long period of colour in your own garden. For the hedgehogs, leave a pile or two of leaves and twigs for hibernating places.

Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control we had to postpone our October 2018 Concert, and hope to have a new date around Christmastime when we can showcase the wonderful selection of music we had been rehearsing for “The Great Adventure”. We have also now started rehearsals for The Pirates of Penzance – Broadway Version, and by the time you read this article, the principal cast will have been selected. We are very happy to welcome back two previous members, Richard Craggs and Ali Sturla, and we also have some new members who we are delighted to welcome into our “family”. The wonderful Alan Hutchinson has taken a small step back, and will be assisting Catherine Matthews, from Ashby School, as she begins her musical journey with us. Alan’s marvellous experience will be invaluable to Catherine, and we’re certain the partnership will bring outstanding performances to the stage from 9th to 13th April 2019.
