this issue 125 For a relatively small town I am always amazed at how much is going on in Ashby. I’m not just talking about events although our Whats On d (pages 56-57) is bursting at the seams with this month’s meetings and d’s shows and we were spoilt for choice as to which of the many kid’s e 12). Halloween events we should include in our Whats on for Families (page I’m also talking about the number of local charities who work continuously to support members of our community, on page 40 we look at the Dyspraxia Foundation who remain relatively unheard of but provide essential help to local families such as the Killips. There’s so much happening with local businesses as well. on page 31 we bring you Copper Leaf Art and Craft Cafe who have just launched on Bath Street Corner. Next month we bring you details of Simpson Jones’ move from The Green to smart new offices on Market Street and their growth in the last six years. And of course there are many local clubs and societies producing work such as Pudding Bag Production’s new Digital Heritage Trail for Ashby - see page 102 to find out more. Happy reading,

technology tips Local technology expert Phil Barnfield from PC Clinic in Huntingdon Court has joined our editorial team to pass on his invaluable advice and tips. We kick off with a look at parental controls on the internet...

PARENTAL control THE internet is a vast array of useful information, images, videos, games and much more. By its very nature, however, other ‘not so good’ content also comes up, and it’s so easy for our little ones to get drawn in to things that they really shouldn’t be looking at. It can be a scary place and requires parental vigilance to ensure they remain safe.

For years there have been programs bundled with Internet Security companies, and many of them can be complex to manage, so parents tend to give up on the possibility of enforcing Parental Controls. Many modern internet routers also have built in policies to set time restrictions and website blocks, but often require high levels of IT skills to get it right.

Along came Windows 10, and luckily for its users, we now have Microsoft Family Safety to help out the parents. Directly integrated into Windows, and allowing you to control what your children are doing, monitor their activity, restrict the websites they visit, see what programs they are using, and even add in timed access control – making sure they know when it’s bedtime!

Setting it up in Windows 10 is fairly easy; open Settings, then Accounts, and then choose the ‘Family and Other Users’ option. Then click ‘Add a family member’. From here you can create accounts for your children, and then once done all they need to do is login to their PC, laptop or Windows device with their details, and they will be protected and controlled with the settings you have set for them.

one unique feature is that if you use the time controls, you can change them easily for say ‘school holidays’. Even the child can click a button when their ‘internet time’ is up, and it will then send you a message giving you the option to extend it for them if you wish. All very clever, but very simple to manage too by logging in to your ‘Parent’ account from any internet connected device.

Visit https://account.microsoft.com/family for more details. This is a totally free service by Microsoft and it’s worthwhile giving it a go if you have children and you want to secure their internet activities.

For any further help and advice, pop in to your local computer and laptop centre, PC Clinic. Fully endorsed by Which? Trusted Traders and Microsoft Partners too – for your peace of mind.

fitness tips

Hello Autumn WHEN it comes to keeping fit and eating healthy it's probably fair to say I'm a realist. By that I mean for most of us the commitment to exercise 3 times per week and eating wholesome fresh food every day is hard work, with our work and family commitments, social events, and money worries. However, I'm a real advocate of trying to be the best you can. Everyone and everybody is different and what works for one may not have the same effect on another. You need to be you to be confident and love yourself, be positive and energetic and fit to a pretty good standard. So when it comes to training I like to train smart, efficiently and sensibly. I never spend more than 45mins - 1hour training. Anything longer for me and it can have a negative effect on my energy balance. I like to weight train hard using mostly compound exercises, the ones that utilise the most amount of muscle and energy to complete. I also prefer HIIT training (High Intensity Interval Training), to the usual cardio methods too, again this suits me as I can get it done in 20 minutes and have the maximum calorie burning effect. This type of training was popularised by programs like Insanity, Metafit and the more recent 'Body Coach'. When it comes to diet, I work on the 80/20 rule, which for me means 80% of my diet is good and the other 20% I don't worry about too much. This way I still get to enjoy some of the foods I love, like chocolate and the occasional takeaway plus the odd glass of red! I try to follow this daily, which means that overall my diet is 80% good which definitely helps in achieving the results I'm after. remember, getting fit and healthy is not a race, just try to improve on what you did last time and you'll be a step closer to your goal.

money matters

It’s Good to TALk by Kevin Cunningham of Bleathwood IFA Ltd

WELL the summer is over and we are already into the last third of 2016. So far this year we have seen quite a few changes and many are financial.

In my last article I mentioned the pending EU referendum vote (BrEXIT) and the possibility the Bank of England would lower the base rate. In August the Bank took that step and lowered interest rates to 0.25%. So cash savings rates are suffering further reductions. It also took steps to print more money and the bank will use this to purchase UK Corporate fixed debt and Government debt, what we call Corporate Bonds and Gilts. This also means that these cautious investments are probably going to offer lower levels of returns as well.

Hence my suggestion it is good to talk on a regular basis with your adviser, not only because we can help with your plans, but because things constantly change, for example.

From April we had changes on how your savings are taxed. Bank and Building Society savings accounts now pay interest gross. Therefore non tax-payers, basic and higher rate tax payers each have different rules on how much interest income they can receive before they have to pay tax.

In April the government introduced changes to Dividend Tax rules. Everyone will have a Dividend Income Allowance of £5,000 then after that the Dividend is taxed. So if your dividend income is more than £5,000 a year you have to set some money aside to cover the tax you will have to pay. Again it is a change which has to be managed, where different options or strategies can be employed.

April also introduced a change in how the State Pension looks. We now have a new single-tiered State Pension. In May I requested a forecast and found the information provided very useful, different from the old information. I have always encouraged clients to access this information but since May I have gone back to my clients and recommended they acquire up to date information so we can plan. You can usually acquire the information on line through the Government Gateway. If you are wondering what your retirement income requirements are then it is something you should do. Then discuss it with your financial adviser.

Working with an Independent Financial Adviser is not just about buying a financial product and their performance. It is having someone who works with you to help map out your financial future. Ensures you have things in place for those bumps in the road and not only updates you with news on any changes, but offers ideas if they affect you.

It’s good to talk – so challenge your adviser or find one to help.

For more information on this matter or if you would like free initial financial advice with no obligation then you can contact Kevin at Bleathwood Financial Services on 01530 417943. Bleathwood IFA Ltd Bleathwood House, 45 Upper Packington Road, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, LE65 1ED. www.bleathwoodifa.co.uk Bleathwood IFA Ltd (FSA No: 516218) is an appointed representative of Sense Network Limited (FSA No: 465124) which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. The FSA does not regulate tax advice.

venture theatre news WHEN the first play of our new season On Golden Pond, comes to the end of its run on Saturday 1st October, it will be all systems go to get the next one Comfort and Joy underway.

Putting on five productions a year, as we do at The Venture Theatre, means there is no time for a ‘breather’ between plays. No sooner has one play finished than the set construction team are striking the set and beginning to think about how they will go about the next one. The director of the next play will have

It’s all work - or is it?

set about his or her task even earlier. It is usual for readings to be held for the next play two or three weeks before the current one finishes – so if you were thinking of reading for our Christmas production it is already too late! That doesn’t mean, however, that more people to join the team are not needed. over the next two or three weeks, the director will be building the team who will undertake things such as set painting and organising props and furnishings. Having all these things in place sooner rather than at the last minute really helps the actors get into their parts. There will also be someone to design the lights and sound – it’s not just a matter of pressing the right buttons on the night! Costumes have to be found and the stage manager and crew have to rehearse their moves so that every scene looks exactly right each time the curtain goes up, and all in as little time as possible so that the audience isn’t kept waiting. Even the

prompt has to attend rehearsals and get to know the play well before opening night. Then there is the all-important publicity – posters, flyers, radio interviews, social media postings, articles for Ashby Life – it all involves a lot of work. Someone also has to produce the programme and get it printed in time for opening night. once the play opens, another team moves into action to ensure that you, our audience, have a comfortable and enjoyable night out. It’s all down to team work and lots of it. Every single person you see at the Venture Theatre is a volunteer. There are no paid staff. That’s why we are constantly on the look out for new members to come and join us. But it’s not all work! We have a good social life going with ‘Club Nights’ every Monday evening when the bar is open. Pop in to meet us any Monday evening after 7.30pm and you will be very welcome. See www.ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk

household cleaning tips My name is Tina and I work at the Ashby Toolbox. The large selection of natural cleaning products we stock really got me thinking about the way we set about ensuring our homes are gleaming and germ free. Did Granny really know best with her pearls of cleaning wisdom?

Why Granny really did know best! TRADITIONAL cleaning methods have been making a comeback in recent years due to the excellent results they produce and the fact that they are free from synthetic chemicals and allergens. Having researched the topic, I found there are a growing number of people who are making the change back to using naturally sourced products, both from a personal preference (to help with skin irritations and asthma) and also to protect our environment for the next generation. So where is the proof? spotlight on... DySPRAxIA, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a common condition affecting fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It can also affect short-term memory, spatial awareness and speech. It affects 5% of the population – that is generally 2 children in every classroom. With the right support and understanding, the challenges associated with dyspraxia can be managed well. However, many people with dyspraxia/DCD struggle to get the recognition and help they need at school and in the workplace.

Dyspraxia Awareness Week 9th-15th October 2016 The Dyspraxia Foundation; the UK’s only national charity providing information and support on dyspraxia is committed to raising awareness to ensure it is not a barrier to opportunity and fulfilment.

Does Dyspraxia affect you?

Local family; robert and Christine Killip cannot thank the Dyspraxia Foundation enough for the support they have been given since their son Sam was diagnosed. In fact, Sam is now an enthusiastic member of the Foundation and is very interested in forming a local group where young adults could meet on a regular basis for discussions and social activities. If anyone is interested in joining a local group they can contact the Helpline Service on 01462 454 986.

40

Eleanor Howes, Dyspraxia Foundation Chief Executive officer, advises: “The charity is staffed by a few long-term employees and supported by volunteers; parents of children and adults with dyspraxia, health, education, PR and employment experts. Together, we offer help, advice, support and work to raise awareness of this still poorly understood condition.”

More funds are urgently needed however to continue offering support to people with dyspraxia/DCD through their helpline service, local groups and research projects. Dyspraxia Awareness week will run between 9th and 15th October with the aim of increasing awareness and those much needed funds. For more information on the Dyspraxia Foundation visit www.dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk and donations can be made using Justgiving at http://campaign.just giving.com/charity/dyspraxia/appeal

on the beat Hello everyone...

ONLINE grooming is a growing threat and can take place in your home without you knowing. In November last year, 15-yearold Kayleigh Haywood received a Facebook message from Luke Harlow, a man she had never met. over the course of 13 days they exchanged 2643 messages. Harlow told Kayleigh all the things many teenage girls want to hear. He told her she was beautiful, how much he cared for her and that she was special. Harlow was grooming Kayleigh, along with two other young girls he had also been speaking to. But it was Kayleigh that finally agreed to his requests to spend the night of Friday 13th November 2015 at his house. She spent the next day with him too, and in the early hours of Sunday 15th November, having been held against her will by Harlow and by his next

44

door neighbour Stephen Beadman, Kayleigh was raped and murdered by Beadman. With the support of Kayleigh’s family, Leicestershire Police has made a film about aspects of the last two weeks of her life. ‘kayleigh’s Love Story’ is a warning to young people, both girls and boys, about the dangers of speaking to people they don’t know online. The film highlights just how quick and easy it can be for children to be groomed online without them or those around them knowing it is happening. Its purpose is to protect children now and in the future and to stop another family losing a child in this way. Since September the film has been shown in schools to children 11 and over. A trailer of the film has also been made and can be seen at www.leics.police.uk/kayleighslovestory Many children and young people spend a lot of time online so it is important to know what they are doing and who they are speaking to. There are signs that could indicate your child is engaging in a dangerous online relationship, and steps you can take to protect them. out and about

Ashby PROBUS MANy people find retirement to be more challenging than expected because so much of their social life was nt and associated with their working environment career. Retirement advice often suggests that k. we develop hobbies or do charitable work. Whilst that is sound counsel, many men miss the social interaction of likeminded business and professional colleagues and Probus helps to fill that gap. s Ashby Probus, a club for retired men, has ub monthly lunch meetings at The Beeches pub emin Ashby which includes talks given by memely, y they y, bers on any subject they wish or, alternatively, may ask a friend or colleague to give a talk on their behalf. The subjects are varied and very wide ranging but always of great interest and have recently included the art of thatching, the early development of cable television and the good, the bad and the bizarre business practices in the hotel industry. regular visits are also arranged, some of which include member’s partners, and have recently included a guided tour of Taylor's Heritage Bell Foundry, the Jaguar car assembly line, the DHL Distribution Hub, a

52

Gypsum Mine, the Derby City sewage treatment plant, a boat trip on the Trent and Mersey Canal and a theatre trip to see Phantom of the Opera. In addition ladies lunches take place throughout the year. The club is not a fundraising charity and the primary objectiv is to provide a challenging social objective envir environment for recently retired men from bus business and professional backgrounds to m make new friends and enjoy themselves.

T Time commitment is minimal with a m monthly meeting and one optional social ou outing but each member is positively to take an active role in the en encour-aged runn running of the club where possible. This year’s preside president, Alan Ball, who has been a member for 11 years speaks highly of the many excellent friends in the area that he has made as a result of joining Probus. Why not go along and see for yourself? The club promises to make you very welcome and for the modest cost of a pub lunch there is little to lose and much to be gained.

If you’d like to know more contact the Probus club secretary Frank Bedford on 01530 467183 or by email to frank.bedford@ntlworld.com

a walk in the forest A Circular Walk from...

Shellbrook to Blackfordby TThis is a great circular walk, easily accessed from the outskirts of town. The walk takes about aan hour and a half starting from Shellbrook (allow extra if you are walking out from town). It is aall easy walking and the paths are mostly well marked. The footpath that takes you out to 1 Blackfordby appears to follow a fairly direct line from Ashby to Blackfordby Church – for me it B always al a s has a wonderful onde d rf de r l fe ffeel e about it and I can imagine our ancestors treading the path in days gone by. I’d be intrigued to know its history?

our walk starts at the wide right hand verge in Shellbrook, where there is usually space to park. If you are coming out of Ashby town centre leave via Kilwardby Street, continue onto 2 Moira road and then to Shellbrook. on entering Shellbrook look out for where the verge widens and there is a kissing gate and footpath sign on your right. Pass through the kissing gate to enter an area of young plantation. Walk straight ahead g u up the side of the first field until you come to a gap on your right. T Turn right through the gap and then go over the stile that is d diagonally on your left and leads into a fenced area. Follow the w wide grassy path diagonally through the trees (1), crossing over a r ride to arrive at the top left corner of this fenced area. Cross the s ext to the field gate and stile to your left and then turn right. Go through the swing gate next t then turn left to follow the yellow marker arrow along a grassy path with the hedgerow on 3 your y left. (There is a wonderful view from the top of the hill on your right if you wish to divert).

P Pass through a metal swing gate (2) and keep following the path straight ahead with the solar ffarm now on your left. Continue straight on with the spire of Blackfordby Church always visible str raight ahead of y straight you. You will cross over a farm track and pass by some farm buildings off to your right before crossing fields and finally emerging onto Ashby Lane in Blackfordby.

Turn left and follow the lane to its junction. Turn left again and then right, by the no through road sign, onto a footpath leading into a field. Cross the stile and follow the yellow marker arrows over the field - you slowly bear left to pass under a large old tree (3). Look out for a yellow post which will take you over a plank bridge and into John’s Wood (4).

4

Turn sharp left after the bridge and then follow the path straight ahead, ignoring paths off to your left, until you get to a point where your path twists right and then immediately left. Straight after this bend there is a path coming in from your right and a stile on your left. Turn left to cross the stile and then walk straight ahead following a narrow path with a stream running below and to the left of you. After a while this will take you to a further stile leading out onto the bottom of playing fields. Go diagonally right across the fields towards a yellow post underneath a large oak tree and then cross a wooden plank into a field. The path h bends around the field corner (it was a little overgrown here when I went but soon became easier to see when you got around the c corner). Follow the path down the field edge with the hedgerow on your right. You will 6 e emerge through a gateway onto the main Ashby to Moira road. T Turn right and continue for a short distance alongside the road, crossing over just after the M Moira sign to reach a metal gate with signs for the Ivanhoe Way by it. Pass through the g gate to enter Chestnut Woodland. Walk straight ahead, keeping t hedge on you left, and pass by two yellow marker posts to the r reach a small metal gate on your left leading into fields. Turn left h here to follow the Ivanhoe Way (5).

T The path crosses the fields behind a large farmhouse. Keep f following the marker posts until a wide grassy path becomes v visible ahead of you (6). At this point the Ivanhoe Way turns off to d to to keep k the right but you need straight on to reach the wide path which will take you behind the houses at Shellbrook before emerging onto the road opposite your start point.

5

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

HoPE

www.ashbychurch.co.uk

BACk in 2008 a young and fresh - faced Barack Obama entered the White House, along with his catchphrase “Yes we can” and the iconic ‘HOPE’ poster by Shepard Fairey. And yes, at the time, many thought he did bring a new and fresh hope to the world. However eight turbulent years later Barack Obama looks considerably older and a lot less fresh.

Many of the problems he inherited still remain unsolved, nor have they gone away. Afghanistan, Iran (and now Syria) are still highly unstable countries and their associated terrorism seems to be part of everyday life with the horrific atrocities that go with it. The world unfortunately does not seem safer and it is certainly no more stable than before he started his presidency.

I doubt it will have escaped you that by 9th November there will be a new president in America. Sadly it feels there will be less ‘Hope’ than obama brought with

him. Whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, neither, in all honesty, fill me with much confidence!

The Bible tells us something interesting in Psalm 146 v3-5…

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. 3

The message is remarkably clear. We should be putting out hope and trust in God who can save, not in the leaders of the world who cannot.

At 10am on the first Sunday of every month we have a ‘First Steps’ talk. They won’t bamboozle you with lots of heavy Bible passages or complicated ideas, but simply outline God’s plan for the world; a real and genuine hope for your future. Why not come along?

your wellbeing

Becoming a Parent... BECoMING a parent can happen unexpectedly, after planning and preparing or for some becoming a parent occurs after years of disappointment and heartache. Becoming a parent is often described as fulfilling and rewarding, however, these expectations can be short lived as the reality of bringing up a child in today’s society can be financially, physically and emotionally stressful.

More women are returning back to work through choice or necessity meaning that women who choose to stay at home can feel more isolated and lack support. Many new parents live away from their support systems and turn to parenting books that have a prescribed method of how to bring up a child and information is easily available on the internet which can cause more confusion and parents can begin to doubt their ability to follow their own instincts. Many couples have not discussed their own beliefs about child-rearing so that disagreements can start creating arguments and even small children can learn who is the ‘easy’ parent.

70

with Futureminds

www.futureminds.co.uk

Children are also kept ‘busy’, they take part in music, sport and social groups which often take place after school, placing additional pressure on parents to taxi their children around. Children are losing the ability to find ways of occupying themselves. Coping with boredom is a life skill – if we are always being told how to think, what to take part in and the importance of keeping busy then being bored becomes ‘alien’ to us and children may not have time to reflect, think and occupy themselves. Becoming a parent can be a rewarding time, however a stress-free parent is a happy parent and a happy parent makes happy children. Therefore ensure that you have time together doing very little, make time for yourself as an individual as well as a couple, help children to occupy their time on their own and most of all enjoy being a parent as believe it or not there comes a times when they do leave home. Futureminds can offer couple and family therapy as well as behaviour management programmes. For more information please visit our website at www.futureminds.co.uk

in your garden rHS Show Garden Medalist, Francesca Sinclair, looks at how to make the most of your garden and garden jobs for this time of year. Francesca offers a full garden design service - find out more at www.francescasinclair.co.uk When Spanish explorers first saw the hills of California blazing with the Californian poppies they called it the land of the ‘golden west’ and not because of the wealth that was later sought there but because of the golden poppy flowers. The plant itself they called ‘Cup of gold’.

behind flower names

OVER the centuries flowers have obtained common names often derived from how they look, or because of their medicinal properties or because of folk law. Those in horticulture generally use the botanical Latin names so we are all literally talking about the same plant. The common names can sometimes have an endearing story and so I have picked a few to share. ‘Bleeding heart’ or ‘Lady in the Bath’, Latin name Dicentra spectabilis, has a flower which does look like a bleeding heart and if you turn the flower upside down and pull it slightly open it looks like a lady in the bath. Forget-me-not gets its name from a legend of a knight picking a posy of flowers for his beloved as they walked by a riverbank. He then slipped and fell, but before drowning threw her the flowers crying ‘Forget me not’.

We all know that the names, Butterfly bush or summer Lilac are used for a Buddleia. The name ‘Buddleia’ was after the reverend Adam Buddle, following a tradition of associating gardens with the clergy who thought their study of plants would bring them closer to God. As for the common name, this shrub attracts so many butterflies that it looks as if the flowers produce the butterflies or that the shrub is flowering with butterflies.

Kniphofia are commonly known as ‘red-hot poker’ and there are several stories to give it this name. one of the tales is from the early 18th century when a Scottish farmer grew it so successfully it appeared as if ‘the Highlands were on fire’.

The Astrantia is often called granny’s bonnet as the nodding bell shape flowers look like huddles of bonneted little old ladies nodding and gossiping. This flower also was commonly known as ‘columbine’ too, which comes from the Latin ‘Columba’ meaning ‘Dove’. The upside down flower looks like a ring of doves drinking. In old paintings and tapestries the flower represented the dove of peace.

The Cornus shrub is commonly known as Dogwood and has exceptionally hardwood and was used by the Greeks to build the Trojan Horse. It became known as ‘Dogwood’ because the berries of the Cornus mas are supposed to be edible with medicinal qualities, however later in Victorian times a famous garden writer declared the berries were not fit to be eaten and nor should they even to be given to a dog.

Happy gardening.

Francesca

NO MISUNDERSTANDING OR HIDDEN MEANINGS WHEN IT COMES TO JOBS FOR OCTOBER THOUGH... 1 Plant daffodil bulbs (to twice the depth of the bulb). 2 Plant hedges, fruit trees and shrubs. 3 Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they have finished flowering. 4 Mow lawns and do the final cut of the year – not forgetting to trim up the edges so it is neat through winter. 5 rake lawns and get rid of moss. Save raked moss for lining hanging baskets next summer. 6 Lift and divide herbaceous perennials which have become too large. 7 Dahlia tubers, Begonia tubers and Gladiolus corms need to be lifted and dried. 8 Protect half hardy plants with a fleece or move to frost free greenhouse.

MoNTHLY UPDATE

AS we approach another winter with all its flu, viruses, colds and coughs, we thought it would be a timely reminder that no amount of antibiotics will help cure these illnesses and only time, fluids and rest will aid recovery.

STAy AT HOME AND REST‌ Coming to the surgery when you are already feeling poorly only to be told to go home and rest will not help you or demand on our doctors, which are already stretched at this time of year and could result in you passing on your germs to other potentially very poorly patients. If you really feel you need some medication, the di ti th pharmacy should be you first port of call as they have many over the counter remedies to help you with these symptoms. However, if you suffer from chest conditions like

asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CoPD) you may need to seek medical advice sooner. If you have additional symptoms like shortness of breath, sharp chest pain when you breathe or coughing up blood you should see a doctor promptly. If you are eligible for a flu jab and have not already made your appointment, please note m that we have a flu clinic on Saturday, t 8 October 2016. Please ring reception and a book an appointment.

OTHER NEWS‌ We are recruiting for O more receptionists to help with access m t the practice by telephone and on the to f front desk in response to our recent patient survey. p

W would also like to welcome Dr Jane We Perry who recently joined our surgery as a salaried GP and our two new Practice Nurses, Jo Lovett and Alan Dimelow who have recently joined the practice and say farewell to Fiona Peach and Diana Gough; we wish them well in their future.

“This must be it,” rachel said, as the car tyres crunched across the gravel drive, “the owner said it was the house after the churchyard.” “It’s not what I was expecting.” Ian applied the handbrake. rachel unclipped her seat belt. “It looks like a gingerbread cottage after someone has taken a few bites out of it.” “I’m sure it will be fine for a couple of nights,” Ian said. “The key is under a stone by the porch.” A fierce wind rattled through the churchyard as they let themselves in. rachel shivered in the little sitting room as Ian put down their suitcase. “We should light a fire,” he said, “before we both freeze to death.” The owner had left a net of logs by the empty hearth, but Ian wondered whether they would be enough to warm up this damp building. “I don’t suppose there are any matches anywhere?” “On the mantelpiece,” rachel said reaching for them. “Urgh, look at the size of that thing.” Ian glanced down. A huge brown slug was stretched across the stone floor in front of the hearth. “That is a big boy,” he exclaimed. “I suppose you have to expect that in these old properties. He probably came in on the logs.” “Looks like he’s been having a good explore,” rachel said. “Look at his trail.” A wet silvery track laced across the floor, looping across itself. “It looks a bit like writing,” Ian said. Both of them stepped back and looked again. “It is writing.” rachel’s words sent an even deeper chill through Ian. What looked at

the Grave

first like random curls took shape into neat and precise joined up handwriting. “Read it out loud,” she said, a tremble in her voice. “It says ‘Can’t escape the grave’,” Ian read, wishing for all the world that it could have said something different. “There’s a comma between ‘escape’ and ‘the’,” rachel said. “What could that mean?” “Perhaps the slug needs to work on its grammar.” Ian wanted to laugh, but a sudden blast of wind sent a flurry of dried leaves through the open door, and instead he gave a guttural yelp. rachel grabbed his arm. “Do you think it’s something to do with the graveyard?” she asked with wide eyes. “I honestly don’t know what it means,” he said, taking another step back. “It feels like a threat.” rachel searched his face for sign of agreement. “We should leave.” “But it’s a slug,” Ian said, unable to make sense of it, “it’s just the opinion of one slug.” “How many slugs does it take?” Her voice began to rise in panic. “I’m not staying here, you can’t make me.” “But it’s just a dumb slug.” Ian shook his head, bewildered. “Why should it be threatening us?” “I don’t know,” rachel sobbed, “but it is.” “But we’ve paid for the cottage,” Ian said. Then knew he’d said the wrong thing. “So what?” rachel sobbed. “This slug implies we’ll be paying for it with our lives.” “I’ll take you home,” he said, trying to restore calm. “We’ll just lock up and go. It’s fine.” one last blast of wind howled through the cottage as they slammed the front door shut. With spinning tyres, they crunched a swathe through the drive as they sped away, back into the night. The slug found itself once again enveloped in darkness. It had failed this time, but it had a job to do, so it continued. By midnight it had finished its full message, which read, in beautiful silvery cursive: “Can’t escape, the gravel drive is a nightmare for gastropods.” by Jackie Brewster

ashbeian mtg news ON Sunday 4th September 84 children came flooding through the doors to register for the auditions for Fagin’s Gang for our next production Oliver! 4-8th April 2017 at the 400 Hall, Repton.

It’s all about the children The audition process took the place of three workshops – drama, singing and dancing – and our eager auditionees ranged from age 5 to 17. It was a long day, and every single young person attending gave their all from start to finish. The energy, talent and absolutely burning desire evident in every one of them won the hearts of all our helpers, and the day was so enjoyable, it didn’t seem we had been there for seven hours! The Production Team had the unenviable task of selecting those

92

children who would be called back to audition for the particular rôles of oliver and the Artful Dodger. Also they had to select the successful children to be in Fagin’s Gang.

on Tuesday 6th September the oliver and Artful Dodger hopefuls came again and auditioned for two more hours.

They learnt SS a new dance routine, sang a new song, and did a further drama workshop. Again, we were blown away by the talent and eagerness displayed by every single one of the 14 callbacks.

At the end of Tuesday evening, the decisions were made – two olivers and two Artful Dodgers were selected, and the announcements

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

have been made to those cast. We have – wait for it – a Fagin’s Gang of 37 children who will be supported each night by the Artful Dodger and oliver, who will play alternate performances. one of AMTG’s aims is to promote amateur dramatics for young people, and there are so many talented children out there – we are proud to be a part of the start of the journey for some of them – we are certain that many of our new Fagin’s Gang will be the stars of the future.

So the important dates for your diary! Oliver! will be performed at the 400 Hall repton from 4th to 8th April 2017. Please visit our website at amtg.org.uk for ticket information and our online Box office. You won’t see a better show!

police and crime commissioner Keeping the local in policing...

EARLIER the new Police and Crime Commissioner; Willy Bach for the area was elected to post. This month we ask him to tell you more about his new role and how it will help our community…

“Many people have asked me, since my election in May this year, what a Police and Crime Commissioner actually does. Basically, I am the link between local people and the police. I also commission the services that victims of crime receive and work with local organisations to keep communities safe. This is not an office-bound role and I have already been out and about in Ashby and surrounding areas to learn about local issues for myself.

Ashby is one of the most sought after places in the UK to live and it’s easy to see why: it has fabulous parks, the castle and an old fashioned high street offering

94

excellent shopping and the popular market. It also has a low crime rate, and I want to make sure that it stays that way.

Talking to local people I consistently heard that they wanted to see more officers on the streets. I agree. The recruitment of around 120 new officers, announced last month, is the first step. I am determined that, despite the cuts to police funding, you will see more officers and PCSos out and about on the streets.

Fundamentally, low crime rate or not, one crime is one too many and that includes anti-social behaviour. Nobody should have their quality of life affected by someone else’s idea of fun so don’t ‘put-up’ with it, get in touch with the police, your local council, or me.

We need a culture of confidence where people are willing to speak out because they trust the authorities to listen and act. As for me, I want to hear your views so that I can drive change and make sure that the service you receive reflects your expectations.

chess puzzle

CHESS PUZZLE

Black to play and mate in two moves.

There are many charity shops, and some have books, even chess books. I recently found a book entitled “Puzzles for Beginners,” from which the above problem is taken.

You can tell White is in trouble – three Black pieces are poised to swoop on the unfortunate monarch. But the exact moves are hard to see. Can you spot the winning moves?

To discuss this, and any other position, why not meet up with equally perplexed chess players at the Ashby Ivanhoe Chess Club. Call Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for more details.

114

Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 116 - should you need it!
