TOWN COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
What a summer of successful events we’ve had here in Ashby! Fake Festival kicked it all off way back in June then we had Ashby Open Gardens, the first ever Ashby RealFest, Jim’s Tractor Run, the Festival of Transport and, finally, the newly launched Ashby Inside Out. The highlight, of course, has to have been the Sealed Knot event. The parade through town followed by the battle was enjoyed by all ages. There’s still lots to look forward to with Ashby’s FABulous returning on 6th October. To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 there will be additional events taking place on Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. The ‘Annual Service of Remembrance’ will be held at St Helen’s Church and an additional ‘All Age Service’ will be held at Holy Trinity Church, both at 9:30am. Uniformed organisations will parade in to the services and later through town to the War Memorial on Market Street. At St Helen’s Church look out for a beacon lighting ceremony, a bugler in the bell tower, a peal of bells and a poppy drop from the tower. Plans for the Christmas Market & Fair are well under way and we will bring you details of the full line up in the November issue of Ashby Life. In other news, £8,000 has been allocated to Blackfordby for the refurbishment of the Old School Room in order to make it a community facility for all to use. Planning permission has been given for a multi-use games area at Westfields thanks to a great effort from the Friends of Westfield. Following a Town Council meeting in early September, a motion has been passed for us to enter into negotiations to secure the freehold of Ashby Bath Grounds. It has been agreed that we
10
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
will not surrender the lease of the Bath Grounds in the event of any planning application and we will look to extend the lease for a further 28 years from June 2023 when the current lease expires. Work on the Ashby Project continues at pace. Adrian Moakes; the artist signed to create a public work of art in the Culture & Leisure Quarter has been meeting residents across town to hear their thoughts and ideas. Planning permission has been applied for and the finished result should be in place by early 2019. As part of the project we have also been working with the County Council to declutter the road signage in Ashby. Currently there are over 400 road signs in and around the town. The plan is to remove 140 unnecessary signs and change another 40. Work is under way with the Highways Agency to replace the brown tourism signs in particular. Finally, a number of new Ashby Town Council brand ambassadors have been welcomed on board recently including Owen Jones, The Short Cut, Bow Boutique and Zamani’s with more in the pipeline. Some funding is available for town traders to assist in the rebranding of facilities. Email hello@ashbydelazouch.info for more details.

SANTA FUN RUN
Ashby’s Santa Fun Run & Walk The Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk returns on Sunday 2nd December for the fourth time and once again Ashby Life are proud to sponsor this fantastic event which raises thousands of pounds for local causes. Following on from last year’s record breaking event where over 1,400 Santa’s entered to run or walk the course around Ashby, Ashby Castle Rotary Club are hoping for another record breaking year to raise money for this year’s main charities. Thanks to the wonderful support received last year both from local businesses in sponsorship and all of the Santa’s who took part, the event was able to raise over £11,600 for local charities. The main charities set to benefit from this year’s event are Hospice Hope, Staunton Harold Sailability Trust and Leicestershire Life Education. All participants are provided with a Santa suit, hat, belt d beard d to run or wallk in lead ding to th he amaziing and spectacle last year of over 1400 Santa’s setting off from the Bath Grounds with a mixture or serious runners, joggers and walkers spreading across the course to provide a fantastic sea of red and white! The fun starts at 10.45am with event sponsors Fitness Republic providing a fun warm up routine to some famous Christmas songs before the event formally starts at 11.00am. To add to the fun, Ashby Hastings Cricket Club will be providing refreshments on the Bath Grounds, there will be musical entertainment and our catering partners will also be selling food and drink

including breakfast cobs to refuel the Santa’s throughout the morning. The ‘real’ Rotary Santa and sleigh will also be on hand to talk to young and old alike and give out some of those lovely chocolates. Fun Run & Walkers are again encouraged to collect some personal sponsorship for taking part in this event. A downloadable sponsor form is available to allow people to raise personal sponsorship to take part in the event if they wish. Individuals will also be able to choose which of the 3 main sponsors they would like to donate their sponsorship money to. Dale Warren from the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle said “We’re really confident of providing another record breaking event and it was so popular last year that we have decided to put a cut off figure of 1500 Santa’s in place to ensure we can maintain the safe, fun event that we’ve achieved so far. We expect to sell out so are advising early entry to guarantee a place”. Entry is now open at www.ashbysantarun.com where you can enter online or download a paper entry form. Entry fees have yet again been held at just £10 for adults (16 and over) and £5 for under 16’s with all profits from the event benefitting the charities mentioned.

Ashby’s FABulous
Ashby is FABulous yet again as the !!!
magic returns
Celebrating it’s fifth year now Ashby’s FABulous promises
a fantastic event taking over the town centre on Saturday 6th October. This annual extravaganza celebrates our high street in so many ways pulling together the community and reminding us all of the benefits of shopping local. This year’s theme is ‘Our Great British Market Town’ so look out for lots of red, white and blue decorations, bunting and of course, Union Jack flags. The shop windows will once again be taken over by live models. The models will be posing from 10.30am to 12noon and then again from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. As well as the shops most of the town centre businesses will be involved. There will be lots of special offers and goody bags available on the day including £100 off wedding dresses at Brides of Ashby, giveaways from Louby Lou’s and gin tasting at La Zouch. Street entertainment will be running throughout the day from Concordia Choir, Stagecoach and more. Head over to The Attic to enjoy some classic British music. Record the moment at the ‘Selfie Point’. There will be plenty of fun, games and puzzles for the kids as well as a bouncy castle on Mill Lane Mews. Whilst there, look out for the grand opening of new menswear store; London & Harley. The event always draws in the crowds so pop on down and walk round town as our Great British Market Town is quite rightly celebrated. Make sure to look out for some British icons such as the Spice Girls, stars from the Great British Bake Off or members of the Royal Family!

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE
We are entering the season of remembering Each October and November here at St Helen’s we have moving services for the bereaved to remember their departed loved ones (this year’s is at 6pm on 4th November) and the traditional British Legion Remembrance Sunday service on 11th November, which begins at 9.30am at St Helen’s church and processes to the war memorial for 11am. This year’s remembrance will be particularly poignant, marking 100 years since the end of World War 1, and therefore we will be marking it in extra ways this Autumn, including a concert by the highly talented eight-voice a cappella group, MOSAIC. Their concert Songs of Remembrance, Songs of Love is on Friday, 12th October at 7.30pm in St Helen’s Church, with refreshments in the Heritage centre afterwards. The first half of their programme is devoted to music, marking the end of the First World War, by composers from each of the countries engaged in this bitter and costly conflict.
Next to pieces by Parry, Tomkins, Byrd, Foulds, Guest and Griffin, there are beautiful a cappella settings by Duruflé, Rachmaninov, Pizzetti and Rheinberger. The second half of the programme has a contemporary, popular flavour and includes settings of music by Lennon and McCartney, Hoagy Carmichael, Kate Rusby and Kurt Weill, among others. It’s good to remember.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
mway Ticknall Tram Tunnel Tun and Limeyards
1
This is a brilliant walk to take the kid ds on as it has a tunnel plus caves, rockyy outcrops and ponds to explore along g the route. I would recommend taking g torches - the tunnel is lit by shafts and you can see the end but it can be slippery and is uneven underfoot. For th those who aren’t surefooted but would still like to enjoy j the walk there is an above ground option to avoid tthe tunnel itself. Allow around an hour for the walk. If you ou fancy refreshments afterwards The Wheel in Ticknalll does excellent meals (booking is advisable) and the village v shop and tea rooms offer hot drinks, cake and light refreshments. The walk starts from Ticknall Village Hallll ccar park which is situated just off Ingleby Lane in Ticknall. l The postcode for sat nav users is DE73 7JW. Leave the car park by the gate in the corner which leads back out onto Ingleby Lane. ne Cross over the lane and turn right to walk downhill towards o the village. After a short distance cross the main n road d, opposite The Wheel (1), and then turn n left for a short distance before turning right into Banton’s Lane by a wooden footpath sign. Continue through the small gate at the end of the lane and follow the footpath arrows to bear right across the field. You will pass through an open gateway and then a new wooden gate (2). Almost immediately after this gate turn right to pass through a second small gate which leads you down a slope sl to the old tramway. Turn sharp right and you will see the entrance to the Ticknall Tramway Tunnel ahead ea of you (3). Built in 1805, the tunnel was part of the tramway linking the limeworks at Ticknall with the A Ashby Canal and was closed in 1915. *Those who wish sh to avoid going through the tunnel itself should d turn left after the new gate, follow the path to reach ch and cross over the main drive of Calke Abbey, and then look for a stile on the far side of the drive which will w lead them down to the other end of the tunnel. * After emerging from the tunnel, ne you enter Ticknall Limeyards, a site of special scientific interest. This path always makes me think of Lord o of the Rings as you
3
2
can definitely imagine hobbits, i elves and goblins living among m the ferns, rocks and hanging in creepers! Keep straight ahead down n the track, following the g green National Trust arrows, and ignoring ri any paths off to the side. You willl pass over a small metal bridge (4) with aan information board off to the left of it and d a little further on you cross over a beautifully u restored old stone bridge (5). Go through u a wooden gate and then underneath a stone archway (6) before arriving at a narrow gap byy a rocky outcrop with a stile on your left. Cross the he stile to emerge onto a grassy area with ponds on your left hand siide. You may like ke to make a small diversion to explore l the ponds before leaaving over the e stile on the far side of thiss area. After d damp weather there is a sm mall waterfall which cascades down the rocks on your o right just after the sttile - in the e win nter when it freezes it is partticularly beautiful. A After a short h way you join a wide trrack. Turn left and follow the trackk down to o reach the main road through Ticknall. TTurn left ef along the road, and continue along tthe pavement, crossing over where the path o on tthe left ef ends, until you pass u under e the bridge just before tthe m main entrance to Calke Abbey. IImmediately opposite this entrance, take the path up the grassy as area on your right up to a gap b beside a gate which leads onto the end of Chapel Lane. Turn left to o go through the gate and then n walk along Chapel Lane to arrive back onto Ingleby Lane. The gate t leading into Ticknall Village Hallll car park is now immediately ahead of you. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ON THE BEAT Back in July, a new-look Leicestershire Police website homepage went live, marking the first step in a wider digital services transformation project being delivered by the force. The project aims to improve digital contact with the public, adapting to changing customer needs and enabling our communities to do more online, while reducing 101 demand. The homepage is being changed to make it easier for the public to find the information and services they need, moving it from being a repository for news to a more user-friendly platform with easy access to the most useful pages. ACC Jason Masters said: “Our priority is to provide a high quality emergency service to the public and keep people safe, whilst continuing to adapt to the changing needs of the community. For non-urgent issues, we are providing the public with alternative methods of contacting us in addition to calling 101 which gets them quick access to the service they need. Ultimately the public will be able to do everything online they can currently do via 101.” This is the first step in a series of significant online developments that will see our website become the
Open Mon-Sat
first port of call for the public when contacting us. The project, known as Digital Services Transformation, will enable the force to move many of our services online, allowing the public to self-serve by reporting and accessing information. Road traffic incidents will be one of the first services to be available on the new platform and many others are planned such as firearms licensing applications and taking payments online. You’ll be able to see the new homepage by visiting www.leics.police.uk. PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
A Venture into our history Do you know the origins of The Ashby Venture Theatre on North Street? It dates back over 80 years. In 1923 Leonard H. Matthews formed the Ashby Dramatic Society. Back then the group met in a clubroom at the back of what is now the “La Zouch” restaurant on Kilwardby Street. The society then bought and converted a church hall which opened to the public in 1981 as the Ashby Venture Theatre. Ashby Dramatic Society and the Venture Theatre went from strength to strength with the Theatre being established as a popular venue for other visiting groups both professional and amateur, including Derby Playhouse, Not the National Theatre Company, New Perspectives Theatre Company, and local amateur group ASH Players (many of whose members have since joined Ashby Dramatic Society). In 1990 Ashby Dramatic Society extended its

GardeninG tips:
Moss Special
After the long dry summer, gardens may be prone to problems with moss as we head into the colder months. Kevin from Green Thumb Ashby explains why and offers some valuable advice on how to tackle this issue. LAWN ISSUES: MOSS Moss thrives in damp and shady areas; lawns usually affected are those with heavy surface thatch or clay soil. It is important never to cut your lawn less than 25mm (1”) as scalped lawns are also prone to moss. WILL RAKING GET RID OF MOSS? Raking will only remove the dead moss, it will not cure it. Instead, we recommend hollow-tine aeration and scarification, which eliminates one of the main causes of moss - thatch. Moss loves a moist, rich environment and therefore loves thatch.
BEFORE
THATCH Thatch is the matted layer, made up of living and dead organic matter, found between the grass plant leaf and the soil surface. Thatch (over 15mm or ½”) creates ideal conditions for moss and disease to thrive and, by reducing water, air and nutrients getting to the roots, it also prevents the grass plant from flourishing. HOW CAN GREENTHUMB HELP? To reduce thatch that has built up during the year, we recommend machine work hollow-tine aeration and scarification annually. This will also improve the growing conditions of the grass plant, resulting in a much healthier lawn. HOLLOW-TINE AERATION Hollow-tine aeration punches out thousands of cores from the lawn, this thins out sub-surface thatch and reduces compaction. SCARIFICATION Scarification is a rigorous and thorough operation which uses knives and blades to remove surface thatch; its main objective is not moss removal, but the removal of the cause of moss.
AFTER
POST SCARIFICATION This treatment is a valuable micro-nutrient which helps with recovery and also prevents moss spores from re-establishing. Green Thumb offer a free lawn health check any time at no cost, to all current or potential customers and will make themselves available to answer any questions or concerns you have about your lawn. Call 01530 244552 or email ashby@greenthumb. co.uk today for a free lawn health check and see how Green Thumb can benefit your lawn.

MONEY MATTERS
Can you afford to lose £91,000? No? Nor could we - Pension scam victims lose, on average, £91,000 from their hard-earned pension pot at the hands of fraudsters, according to the Financial Conduct Authority ‘FCA’. Yes, you read that correctly - £91,000 on average! We have all heard horror stories and seen the recent TV adverts warning of such scams. Most people feel that they would never put themselves in a position to be taken advantage of in this way, but even the most astute and cautious of people have been caught out. So, just how are so many people losing pension money to fraudsters? Scammers usually, but not exclusively, contact people out of the blue via phone, email or text message claiming to be ‘authorised by the FCA’ or are ‘working on behalf of the government service Pension Wise’ or similar. ‘I’d never fall for that!’ I hear you cry. Some scammers advertise in seemingly ‘trusted’ publications in print and online backed up with bona fide web sites. ‘I wouldn’t fall for that either!’ Some are even unwittingly introduced via a trusted friend or family member who, unbeknown to them, have already been scammed themselves – they just don’t know it yet! ‘I still wouldn’t fall for any of these tactics!’ We hope so too but when there’s an average return of £91,000 per successful scam, do you think this is the extent of their tactics? Almost certainly not. Our advice is simple - don’t risk it. You only have one lifetime to save and prepare financially for your retirement. To help prevent being a victim of fraud: Reject any unexpected pension offer, whether made online, on social media, via email, over the phone and even from friends or family. If it sounds like a good idea, have it checked by an Independent Financial Adviser who is registered 66
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd with the FCA – as the advert says – Check who you are dealing with. Check the FCA Register on the FCA website www.fca.org.uk or call their contact centre on 0800 111 6768. Never be rushed or pressurised into making a decision about your pension. Lastly, if you think you have been scammed or have been contacted by a person or company that may be a scammer, do report it. If you have just agreed to transfer your pension and suspect it to be a scam, contact the pension provider straight away. As we have highlighted in previous articles, over 30% of Pension Drawdown plans were purchased without any financial advice whatsoever in a 2017 report. Now, more than ever, going the ‘D.I.Y.’ route might cost you more than your pride. Don’t let a scammer enjoy your retirement! Seek Independent Advice before committing to anything.

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS
A M T G has The Great Adventure! In advance of our 2019 show “The Pirates of Penzance – Broadway Version”, we have begun to rehearse for a one-night concert, entitled “The Great Adventure” which will be performed at the Ivanhoe College, North Street, Ashby on Saturday 20th October 2018. The concert team have put together a wonderful selection of music after the members were asked to suggest songs which suit all the different stages through life, from early years to old age. We have a fine programme and Musical Director Alan Hutchinson is already putting us through our paces. There will be a selection of sketches, to break up the musical numbers, and we will also feature our very own in-house musicians, who have hopefully been persuaded to play something suitable! The evening will follow our usual cabaret style, as in previous years, and guests are invited to bring their own refreshments and nibbles. Last year’s Concert “A Night at the Movies” proved so popular that tickets sold in a matter of days, so book early to come and be entertained by us this year!

Foot Files: VERRUCAE A Verrucae is a, non-cancerous, growth of excess infected skin on the foot caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is normally harmless but the overlying hard skin on weight bearing areas can become uncomfortable to walk upon. WHAT DO VERRUCAE LOOK LIKE? The most common appearance of a Verrucae looks like a small cauliflower shaped growth with black dots in the centre, the black dots are the small blood vessels that feed the infected skin. Some may be larger and in other cases there may be many clusters of Verrucae. ADVICE AND TREATMENT • Your skin is a barrier and it is essential to keep it healthy and intact. • If you suffer from dry skin use a moisturizer daily.
• The use of surgical spirit to keep feet dry if you are prone to sweaty feet. • Wear Flip-flops in gyms and swimming baths where the virus is normally picked up. • Wear swim socks in swimming baths to prevent the spread of the virus. • Avoid touching the Verrucae as it is contagious and can spread to other areas of the foot. • See a Podiatrist for further information, treatment and advise.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
Calling all Ladies!
Just recently I have had quite a few ladies chat to me about how selfconscious they are and that they are really scared of coming to the gym. Now, this is not uncommon, butt I think with the explosion of social media - Facebook, Instag gram and so on, it is having an adverse effect on how we fe eel, and for quite a few of us, pushing us further away from the gym. Firstly, I’ll be honest, if you have never been to a gym before, or have had a bad experience in the past, the gym can feel intimidating. Walking through the front door can be one of the most scariest things. I rem member before myself and my husband, Simon, owned Fitness Republic, I was just the same, very self-conscious, worried d that everyone was watching what I was doing! I evven said to Simon that I needed to get in better shape before I went to the gym! I honestly thinkk that because he is into his fitness so much thaat everyone thinks I must be too, but it couldn’t be further from the truth for me and it’’s often a struggle! These wo ords may ring true for some of you ladies, an nd even today I still feel a little selfconsciouss, but with the help of my team, and our lo ovely members, I now feel like I can get in the gym and have a really good training seession and I feel amazing after! My confidencee has grown, my shape is changing and now I have a great understanding of ho ow to work out and eat better that I can consistently stickk to! Over th he last 21 yeears I have worked in or been a mem mber of a few w of gyms. However, Fitness Repub blic is unlikee most gyms I have ever been to. It is really friendly and very welcoming, an amazingly com mfortable plaace to train at whatever your size, shaape or age. However, I realise that this may no ot be enou ugh to ease your fears. That’s wh hy we have developed our amazing ‘find you‘ plan. An exclusive group for ladies that may feel very self-conscious and a little scared of going to the gym. (Seee our advert) 74

Feeling uncomfortable when starrting in a gym is absolutely normal and it’s mostly due to be unsure of what you’re doing. With this plaan we will be exercising away from the gym environment to begin with until, as a group, everyone feeels ready. We aim to alleviate all your fears about going to the gym, help you feel more confiden nt about yourself, stand tall and develop a really good understanding about your diet and exercise regim me. Now, I love to understand my training, what I’m doing and why, and we can also help you with this. No more fad diets, no more going g to the gym and not knowing what to do. We have a qualified Nutrition and d Weight management coach on our team m as well as amazing fitness coaches who are so exciteed to share their knowledge and fill you with so much confidence whilst starting to achieve your go oals.
Let’s not let anything stand in our way, life is short, and we need to make the most of every moment! It starts with YOU and ends with YOU, lets tackle it head on! ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
Forecasting the future... I’m sure you all saw the news about category 2 hurricane ‘Florence’ that hit the US East coast with winds of over 100mph, causing widespread devastation and flooding for over 10 million people. In fact I’m writing this article before the hurricane has even made landfall and completely guessed the results based on weather forecasts. In the Bible predicting the future is called prophesying, where someone makes a statement about the future. There are lots of Bible prophecies, many of which have happened absolutely to the letter and can be verified by historical records. One great example of Bible prophecy is in the book of Ezekiel (written 597BC), which predicts the complete destruction of the city of Tyre on the East Mediterranean coast. King Nebuchadnezzar was first to attack Tyre shortly after the prophecy was written, but only destroyed the city on the
78

mainland. Alexander the Great came along around 332BC and finished the job, using the rubble remains to create a causeway to reach the city on the island. He completely destroyed it fulfilling the prophecy written 260 years earlier. The Bible extensively uses prophecy, and its evidence, to prove its authenticity as God’s inspired book. It also contains various prophesies that are still to happen, ones that talk about the state of the world we see today. It makes fascinating and poignant reading. To find out what the Bible says about our past, present and future, why not come along any Sunday morning at 10am. Discover God’s awesome plans for a fair and peaceful future – plans based on far more than a there-or-thereabouts weather forecast! BODY MATTERS
Common Myths about
lower back pain There is a lot of different advice out there about how best to deal with lower back pain. So we’re going to blow the lid off some of the most common myths and help you get back on track with your recovery. MYTH 1
I hurt my back, so now I will probably have back pain for the rest of my life. Wrong! You can get bad episodes but these do not have to be disabling forever. If you do start having back pain, seek help ASAP to get the advice you need to manage and prevent the pain.
MYTH 2
I have back pain so I should stay in bed and rest. Nope! Whilst avoiding aggravating activities will definitely help, returning to usual activities is important to aiding your recovery – prolonged inactivity is generally unhelpful and as long as exercise is increased gradually, you can actually reduce the risk of future pain! Talk to your physio about a long term plan.
MYTH 3
The more back pain I have, the more my spine is damaged.
MYTH 5
I need a scan or x-ray for my back pain. Inaccurate! Only a very small number of these tests actually contribute to better management of the problem. Clinical examinations are usually enough to identify the problems for the majority of people.
MYTH 6
I need an operation to cure my back pain.
My back pain must be due to something being out of place.
False! Surgery is a higher risk treatment and so is only used if there is no other option available to the individual. The vast majority of people can manage their problem by staying active (with advice), developing a better understanding of the problem and learning how not to aggravate it. This should help them continue their usual daily tasks, without having to resort to surgery.
Untrue! There are a very small amount of people who will experience some change in their spinal alignment but that doesn’t necessarily increase the risk of lower back pain
All in all, it is best to see your physiotherapist and let the experts give you the best advice! You can call ProPhysio on 01530 588 557 or visit our website: www.prophysiomidlands.co.uk
Incorrect! More pain doesn’t always mean more damage and it is dependent on a whole manner of different factors, including previous problems, fitness and coping strategies.

PET’S CORNER
Indoor games for wet autumn days When the summer has gone and you’re not able to get out as much with your dog, it’s important to keep them active even if they’re in the house. Try these indoor games to stimulate mind and body, prevent boredom, and let your dog thrive through the wetter autumn months. Treasure Hunt It’s a good ideaa to play this game in a room that has carpet c or other non-slip flooring so you ur dog doesn’t injure itself in the exccitement. Hide some of their favourite ttreats in one or more areas of your home, and let them hunt for the t ‘treasure’. If your dog is mo ore tempted by toyys, you could alwaays replace the treats with their favourite
ones. This is also a good game if you make people they know the ‘treasure’ – especially when children are involved as it keeps them entertained too. Treat puzzles Stimulate your dog’s mind with chewable toys, puzzles, and activity balls in which you hide food ttreats. t It will ill ttake k some ti time to t work out how to balls keep get to the treats, and the activity a oo. them physically active to Ball games way, you can roll the If you have a long hallw ball along and get them to bring it back. Throwing a ball up the staairs is also a great way to give them the exercise they need without setting foot outside. You’ll have tired friend on a very v your hands before long, ready to play again the next rainy day.

BOOK REVIEWS
Twisted Fairy Tales
If you like your fairy tales more Brothers Grimm than Disney, you’re in for a treat with this lot… The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories Angela Carter Angela Carter is often seen as the queen of the reimagined fairy tale. In this collection, the stories are as dark, twisted and brilliantly written as they come. The main story, The Bloody Chamber, is a retelling of the French folk tale Bluebeard, which sees a young wife make a gruesome discovery in a locked room at her new husband’s house. The collection also includes retellings of Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Red Riding Hood. The Surface Breaks Louise O’Neill The Surface Breaks is a feminist reimagining of The Little Mermaid. In Gaia’s world, mermaids are supposed to look good, entertain the mermen and stay subservient. Gaia’s father, the king, rules with an iron fist. Gaia swaps her life underwater, her tail and her voice for a chance with the man she saves from a shipwreck. But is he really worth it? An intriguing, thought-provoking tale. Revolting Rhymes Roald Dahl Dahl’s childhood classic is more than 35 years old but still just as funny today. Six well-known fairy stories are reimagined in rhyme, with various twists to the tales and extra helpings of gore. Cinderella’s stepsister has her head chopped off, Red Riding Hood turns out to be a crack shot with a pistol and Jack’s mum gets eaten when she climbs the beanstalk. Great fun for kids and parents alike.

Grimm Tales for Old and Young Philip Pullman Pullman has reworked 50 of the Grimm brothers’ tales. He’s kept most of the content the same, but updated the language and ‘tidied them up’. The collection includes wellknown tales, such as Rapunzel, Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin, along with lesser-known stories such as Hans-MyHedgehog and The Musicians of Bremen. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel Louise Murphy In Nazi-occupied Poland, two Jewish children take on new identities – Hansel and Gretel. Pursued by soldiers, the children’s father and stepmother urge the children to seek safety in the forest while they try to draw the danger away. Deep in the woods lives an old woman who may be the children’s only hope. A harrowing read, but a memorable one. Kissing the Witch Emma Donoghue Donoghue wrote Kissing the Witch long before her bestselling Room. It’s a collection of 13 rewritten wellknown tales, including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Whether it’s Cinderella choosing the Fairy Godmother over the prince, or Beauty discovering an entirely unexpected Beast, the tales are original and wellwritten. They’re also very short – perfect for enjoying over a coffee break.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Autumn Gardens There is a lovely relaxed feel to gardens and parkland at this time of year. The leaves are turning to rusty colours, with occasional fiery reds or scrumptious yellows. The pretty perennial borders are less colourful now and a golden biscuit colour seems to take over from the summer colours. A bright autumn blue sky is a terrific back drop to the autumn shades. I hope you will be incentivised to take a stroll into our lovely countryside, and I especially recommend Calke Abbey to appreciate the splendour of this time of year. In late September and October, the ornamental grasses really show their value as they stand resolute and graceful in the borders. Excellent grasses for all sizes of gardens are Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ which are tall, upright and narrow in shape. Despite being whipped around by the wind, this grass always seems to stand back up

again. A nice contrast is a lower soft swaying Stipa tenuissima which, at this time of year, becomes golden coloured and stays looking beautiful throughout the season. Please don’t be tempted to cut down ornamental grasses in autumn. Instead leave any cutting back until February. The top growth of leaves will help to protect the crown of the plant and insulate it from long hard frosts. For inspiration on planting grasses I would suggest visiting Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire. The Trentham Estate is just off Junction 15 of the M6, and is well worth the drive. The Trentham Estate also offers a garden centre as well as shopping village with restaurants. The entrance fee to the gardens is quite expensive but Tesco Club card tokens can be used for day tickets. At Trentham the success of the grasses lies in the repetition of groupings and the sheer area dedicated to the grasses within the general planting schemes. Such planning principals can be taken home for use in your own gardens. Remember to plant in groups or repeat planting in a rhythmic sequence throughout. Using grasses really does seem to extend the interest of a garden well into winter time. A light early frost on the thin arching stems of an ornamental grass is a beautiful thing to behold.
Happy gardening!

LOCAL AUTHOR Local Ashby resident Peter Rex Acier has recently released his first work of fiction ‘Unholy Warmonger’. Born in North Yorkshire, Peter has always been fascinated by the English language, while his imagination was fired by 60s TV Sci-Fi. He comments; “Writing is a heartfelt compulsion”. Peter honed his editorial, writing, and poetry skills at two universities and is also an awardwinning advertising copywriter. Unholy Warmonger is the first of a fictional pentalogy on the paranormal. It’s inspired by Peter’s reading into Gospel sources, all apparently united by a missing Source Q, a ‘sayings gospel’. The late 1930s in Europe was a time of wars and rumours of wars, with one timeless conflict always at work – spiritual warfare. Gray, the main character of this tale, is drawn into the latter by a tragic car crash after a ‘magic’ show. He is asked to meet an old university don to discuss
his unwitting work for ‘The Lost Talents’, a Christian fringe group searching for the missing key to the New Testament, Source Q. But there is also a violent spiritual force bent on creating religious schism. Unholy Warmonger is available on Amazon.co.uk: Kindle e Books for £2.25. A resident of Ashby for nearly 30 years, Peter is also working on books for children and grownups. Look out for these future releases. In the meantime, as the weather turns colder, why not curl up on the sofa and enjoy a copy of Unholy Warmonger? FULLY LICENSED

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020 EARLY RETIREMENT COULD DISAPPEAR BY 2035 ITS TIME TO PLAN As the state pension age rises, life expectancy increases, and final salary pension schemes become a thing of the past, it looks likely that more of us will remain in employment for longer to be able to build up sufficient funds for our retirement. According to analysis by Aviva , the number of people retiring before they reach age 65 is decreasing rapidly. They calculate that if the present rate of change continues, by 2035 almost no one will be able to retire early. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show a record 10.1 million over-50s remain in work, with 1.2m of these workers aged over 65. Ten years ago, less than 700,000 over-65s were in work. In 1998 the figure was 434,000. i
PLAN FOR RETIREMENT Increased life expectancy means people retiring at 65 today can reasonably expect to live into their 80s if not longer. However, when it comes to planning for retirement, people can underestimate the odds of reaching a great age and may not be adequately prepared financially for the years ahead. It makes good sense at all stages of your working life to keep an eye on your pension arrangements, especially if you intend to retire earlier rather than later. Think about • When do I want to retire?
112
• How much will I need in income and savings to fund my lifestyle in retirement? • Are my plans on track? Am I saving enough? The state pension is still only a basic safety net for most people, and not enough on its own to guarantee a comfortable retirement. Personal pensions offer generous tax breaks to encourage us to provide adequately for retirement. If you are a basic-rate taxpayer making a pension contribution, every £100 you pay in will in effect only cost you £80 once income tax relief has been applied. If you are a higher-rate taxpayer, every £100 contributed within the HMRC annual allowance would cost just £60. Employers are legally obliged, subject to age and earnings thresholds, to automatically enrol their employees into a qualifying pension scheme, where employees and employers make monthly contributions. TAKING ADVICE CAN HELP YOU MEET YOUR GOALS - The need for professional advice tailored to your individual circumstances has never been more important. If you’re concerned about your pension arrangements, we’re happy to review your plans and help you keep on track for a financially-comfortable retirement. i Please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020 Aviva 2017

SEASONAL RECIPES
tartlets
SALTED CARAMEL, CHOCOLATE AND CHILLI It may sound like an unusual combination but a hint of fiery chilli complements a rich chocolate dessert perfectly. Serve with a spoonful of thick cream or Greek yogurt for a really indulgent dessert.
MAKES Ready 6 1 hour in chilling plus time

l
Flour, for dusting 250g ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry 260g jar salted caramel sauce 25g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 1 small red chilli, deseeded and chopped Shredded fresh basil leaves, to decorate Icing sugar, for dusting
METHOD
TOP TIP Blanch the chopped chilli pepper in boiling water for one minute, then refresh under cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. This will remove a little of the fiery heat from the chilli. If you prefer, replace the fresh chopped chilli with a sprinkle of dried chilli flakes.
1. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line six 10cm tartlet tins. Prick the bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. 2. Line each tartlet tin with a circle of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes. Remove the beans and paper and bake the tarts for a further 4-5 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Leave to cool completely, then remove the pastry cases from the tins and place on a board.

3. Divide the salted caramel sauce between the cold tartlet pastry cases, smoothing the surfaces level with the back of a teaspoon. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir the mixture until smooth. Cool for 20 minutes then spread over the salted caramel filling. Chill for 1 hour or until set. 5. To serve, sprinkle the chopped chilli pepper over the set chocolate topping and scatter over the shredded basil (if using). Dust with icing sugar.

CHESS PUZZLE
Whi hitittee too pla lay ay - Sho hou ouullldd whi hitittee res esig sign? g In most sports, play must continue for the allotted time. So if a team is losing 10-0 with 5 minutes to play, the captain cannot say “I’ve had enough. Let’s go home.” Chess is different. If you think you have no hope at all, the respectful thing to do is to resign. But if you were white in this position, would you resign? Peter Svidler got this position against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and resigned. Now at our club, we often play on to the bitter end. If you like chess, why not come to the Ivanhoe Social Club from 7.15pm on a Thursday? We welcome all ages and abilities and have a reputation for being a friendly club. If you would like to know more, please contact Neil Roberts on 07804 743471 or check out our web site www.ashbychess.com. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on pag ge 124 - should you need it!
