VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
Venture Theatre Presents
Be my baby
We think of the 60s as being a time of newly found liberality, so it is surprising to hear how strong the disapproval of young unmarried mothers still was and how brutal their treatment could be. The next play at The Venture Theatre is “Be My Baby”, by Amanda Whittington. Set in the 1960s, it is the poignant story of a teenage girl who becomes pregnant and is sent by her mother to a Mother and Baby home where she is forced to give up her child for adoption. Director, Dave Steward says: “Although the play is a lot of fun at times, it tells a serious, and at times, quite brutal story. Amanda Whittington researched the subject a great deal and the situations and events you see in the play are based on real experiences. The young women in the play adore listening to the girl groups of the time - The Ronettes, The Shirelles, The Shangri-Las and so on. Those brilliant, dramatic records are so

evocative, and they’re used to illustrate not only the girls’ optimism and teenage views of romance, but also the reality of their predicament” The play runs from Thurs 20th to Sat 22nd April and Weds 26th to Sat 29th April. Tickets are available, as usual, from Ashby Tourist Information Centre and online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ashbydramaticsociety

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option? Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.
I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension? It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.
You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice as any decisions involving a transfer once made are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. This could prove very costly if the wrong decision has been made. Please contact Ian Staley, Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Advisers Limited on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation.

ON THE BEAT
Stopping nuisance calls If you’re fed up of receiving unwanted sales calls, or want to help a relative who is, there is a way to stop them. Did you know that BT Call Protect offers a FREE service to all of its customers? It’s quick and simple to set up. You can choose which calls you want to take and the ones to send to your junk voicemail. You can also manage your calls in three ways:
• BT blacklist – An identified list of nuisance callers.
Calls from these numbers will be sent to your junk voicemail. The blacklist will significantly cut the amount of unwanted calls you get. It will be turned on by default when you get BT Call Protect.
• Personal blacklist - You can add the
last call you answered (from your home phone) or any other phone number at bt.com/btcallprotect to your own blacklist. So that any future calls from those numbers also go to your junk voicemail. This feature will be switched on too, but won’t have any numbers until you add some.
• Individual call types - You can choose to send
all calls from certain categories to your junk voicemail. The three call types are: o International numbers o Withheld numbers o Unrecognised numbers (shown as unavailable on caller display or on 1471)
Simply call 1572 from your home phone to manage your settings. It’s free to call. Or visit www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/phone/ call-protect/ PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
Is it all
downhill?
Age is not an excuse to stop exercising. Yes it certainly can become a little bit more challenging and some exercises may need to be adapted to suit the individual but overall the best thing that we can do to help our bodies cope with the ageing process is to…. EXERCISE! Now, I’m not advising you to go out and run a marathon or take part in an iron man competition (although of course it’s completely possible!) but I am talking about regular steady weight bearing exercises that are carried out carefully and consistently. As we hit 40 our bodies start to change. Our bones
26
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
shrink in both size and density which can weaken them and makes us more susceptible to conditions such as osteoarthritis & osteomalacia. These can cause the cartilage within our joints to break down causing pain and stiffness. Bones begin to soften, muscles generally lose strength and flexibility which can often contribute to fatigue, weakness and reduced tolerance to exercise. Our joints also become stiffer and less flexible because the amount of lubricating fluid inside them starts to decrease. Now it all sounds like a bit too much doom and gloom, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is an endless list of exercises that will benefit our bodies as we get older, essentially weight bearing exercises such as walking and weight training. These are by far the best type of exercise for maintenance of bone mass. Regular exercise will
also help to slow down the rate at which the bone shrinks. Stretching is another – an excellent class such as pilates is perfect for older adults, especially if you haven’t exercised for a while as it is a safe way to restart a workout program focusing on building a strong core and strengthening our deep abdominal muscles that are closest to our spine. I could go on but I think you’ve got the picture. There is however, one extremely important last point that I would just like to mention as so many of us tend to overlook it - its not just how our ageing bodies will benefit from exercise but also our ageing mind. There has been countless research carried out that shows how exercise helps to alleviate depression, as it increases the production of serotonin which is a critical neurotransmitter found in our brain and associated with good health and mental wellbeing. Exercise also improves our memory, helps to de-stress us and very importantly, allows us to become more focused.
Now I don’t expect you to just take my word for it – here at Fitness Republic we would love for you to either give us a call or pop in for a chat so we can help, guide & advise you on where to start or how to progress. Just remember that getting older doesn’t mean we are unable to exercise, in fact quite the opposite as the more we do the happier not only our bodies will be but also our mind. We offer a completely FREE no obligation 7 day pass to try out our facility first. This includes free 121 sessions with our expert fitness coaches, unlimited gym and fitness class access and a free Boditrax body analysis assessment. We pride ourselves on helping people achieve their goals and being a friendly approachable team making Fitness Republic the place for “every body”. By Liz Toll Personal Trainer, Fitness Republic

MONEY MATTERS
Tips to tackle the
new tax year I am writing this article before the final March budget, so I am hoping nothing much has changed since the comments made in the autumn statement. In the new tax year we will see the introduction of the new Residential Nil Rate Band. This a new inheritance allowance for your residential home. The allowance will start at £100,000 and will increase each tax year to 2020/21 when the benefit will be £175,000. They state this benefit will then increase by Consumer Price Index from that point onwards. The objective is to reduce the burden of inheritance tax for most families by making it easier to pass on the family home. As for ISA’s the allowance for savings will increase to £20,000, quite an increase. Also we will see the introduction of the Lifetime ISA. It is a new savings scheme for 18 to 39 year olds to save and buy their first home or for their retirement. It can be either a cash or stocks and shares ISA. You can save up to £4,000 a year in the Lifetime ISA, (still part of the annual ISA allowance). The government will provide a 25% bonus on each year’s savings. But this comes with rules about accessing the money with potential penalties. The government’s view is the Lifetime ISA is either to help you buy a house or save for retirement. The Treasury are continuing to change pension rules. When I talk to clients they still find it quite confusing as to what they can do with their pensions when they come to retire. The points raised are not just about personal pensions, but also about occupational pensions. If you want some initial guidance you have the Pension Advisory Service or Pension Wise. You can find both options by searching online. But remember they offer guidance, not advice. When you want to take action then you may still need to use a financial adviser. The choice on how your take your income in retirement is a very important decision. Why? Well we are statistically living longer. If you want to understand this point more then I suggest you search the statement - “How long will my pension need
34

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd to last?” – it will show an Office of National Statistic website – it states that for a male aged 65 today, the average life expectancy is 86, that person also has a 1 in 10 change of reaching 99 years of age. So your pension income may need to look after you for quite a few years. So your retirement income planning needs some serious thought. And being blunt, expert advice. This is especially the case with occupation pensions, especially if you are considering transferring them. At this time some of the transfer values look really attractive because of the fall in the yields used for calculating pensions. For the vast majority of people, it is not in their interest to transfer because of the inherent guarantees held within these sort of schemes and the benefits which can be passed on to your partners, the decision to transfer should not be taken lightly. It should be an informed decision. You will also need to understand not all financial advisers are qualified to give this advice and it is important you check with them first before acquiring their assistance. Do your research, but seek out expert independent financial advice.

YOUR WELLBEING
Managing boredom is a life skill School holidays can create panic for parents trying to keep children entertained. It’s important to have fun during holidays, whether that’s going on holiday or days out, but most important is reducing stress and enjoying some calming family time. For younger children a picnic in the garden can be as exciting as going somewhere involving stressful car journeys. For older children, family board games, computer games, garden team games can be great to involve everyone, sharing fun activities. It can take convincing for some children to participate but with perseverance it can be rewarding. Having said that, one life skill which children (and adults) are losing is how to cope with boredom. Children’s lives are busier; with homework, after school activities and easily accessed computers and smart phones. Many adults have also developed this need for constant stimuli. Cycling, driving, walking is often accompanied with music, so the brain isn’t completely quiet. Planning the next task can dominate our thoughts so even when quiet we’re not

really quietening our minds. This habit of needing stimulation can start in childhood, as children aren’t taught managing times of boredom. So this quired to rush activities. Easter holidayy don’t feel req Take time helping your children plan their time. Be content with doing little; taking in your immediate surroundings, what your body experiences and using creative strategies to occupy yourself. Given the time to think, children are great at thinking of ideas and if they think of the idea, they’re likely to use them.

PARENTING
Children’s parties Keep the fun levels up and your stress levels down with our top party tips. Outdoor parties Most kids love a treasure hunt, and it ties in well with a pirate, knights or princess party. You could leave a series of clues leading to one big stash of small prizes to split (chocolate coins tend to go down well). Or you could hide sweets, trinkets and other mini prizes around the garden. Just make sure you keep a few extras to hand, to avoid any tears. Once they’ve found the treasure, you could:
• Have a water pistol fight. • Challenge the kids to an obstacle course. • Hold a mini-Olympics, complete with ‘real’ medals.
• Set up a tin can alley, or a game of skittles. Parties for pre-teens Pre-teens may prefer to head out somewhere with a couple of friends. If they do want a party though, you could:
• Host a sleepover, complete with movie, popcorn and a chocolate fountain.
• Hold a fashion show. Just raid some charity shops and let kids loose on the clothes with fabric pens, glitter and badges.
• Have a disco party, with glow sticks, a glitter ball and a dance-off.
Parties for craft-loving children If your child loves nothing more than creating a new work of art, why not dedicate the party to ‘making stuff’? Depending on the age of the children, you could:
• Make masks out of paper plates, feathers, stickers, glitter and so on.
• Paint pots or trinket boxes. 64
• Decorate plates or mugs with porcelain pens. • Raid the recycling box to make robots, spaceships or monsters.
Make sure you tell parents that the children will need old clothes or painting aprons. And bear in mind that paint may not have dried by the time the party finishes, so you’ll have to deliver the artwork at a later date. Top tips for a successful party: • Don’t invite too many people. A good rule of thumb is to only invite one or two more than the age of your child. So if your son is turning five, you might want to invite six or seven children. However, it is a very rough guide, as all children are different.
• Consider how many children there are in the class or friendship group. Inviting 12 of the 14 girls in your daughter’s class could cause a lot of upset.
• Don’t overwhelm your child. Younger children
may struggle with lots of excited guests, loud music and bright lights. Try to create a safe, quiet space where they can retreat if they need to.
• Don’t feel you have to spend a fortune. Often
the simpler, cheaper parties are the ones that children love the best.
• Rope in as many helpers as you can!

PET’S CORNER
Four strange
cat behaviours explained
Cats are amusing and fun to be around, but sometimes their behaviour just seems downright bizarre. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat behaves in a certain way, from kneading its paws to eating plastic bags, we might be able to offer a little insight.
Head butts When your cat bumps its head against you, it means they’re trying to bond and is an expression of affection. They’re also demonstrating trust in you and marking you out as a ‘member of their club’. Staring Staring is a common trait in cats, if a little unnerving when you’re on the receiving end. They generally stare at their prey before pouncing, but in your case it could be a determined request for food or entertainment. You should also rule out any potential medical reasons if their pupils are constantly dilated - it could be the result of an eye or other health issue.
82
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Eating plastic Eating non-food items such as plastic, paper, wool or even electrical cords may be a sign of ‘pica’. This is an eating disorder that can be caused by dietary deficiency, stress, boredom or in some cases an underlying health problem.
Kneading When your cat sits on your knee and starts to knead, it’s a sign of contentment and is usually accompanied by a loud purring. They also have scent glands on the bottom of their paw pads, and may be kneading to leave their scent behind – effectively claiming you as their own.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

AMTG NEWS
Six months of planning almost over! It’s so difficult to think that by the time some of you read this article our 55th Anniversary production of Oliver! will have finished! When we start rehearsals it always seems like we have weeks ahead of us – and of course we do. But those weeks begin to go by in a complete blur as we get closer to show week. We are so lucky to have a dedicated Production Team who, with their collective skills and talents, tease out the very best performances from everyone, and a truly memorable piece of theatre will have been delivered to our audiences. Already as I write this article, we are close to selling out, and of course that is what all theatre companies hope for. When you consider the huge costs of bringing a show to the stage, it is hardly surprising that managing the budget can cause anxiety! Our aim is always to have sufficient funds in our coffers for the next production, and we are thrilled to announce that will be the wonderful “My Fair Lady” – a show absent from the amateur stage for some time as it had been withdrawn because of legal

IN YOUR GARDEN
Flowering
cherries
Cherry blossom is a sure sign that summer is on its way. In Japan the people celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossom. Such celebrations can be traced for over 1,000 years. The cherry blossom is said to symbolise the beauty and fleeting nature of life, and also new beginnings. Tokyo is a great metropolis, but there are many parks and famously Ueno Park has over 1,000 cherry trees. Cherry blossoms were first cultivated in Japan’s imperial gardens from 794 to 1185, during Hanami (flower viewing festivals) where parties of aristocrats and poets assembled each spring. Clusters of pale pink petals are said to evoke cloud formations, linking them to Buddhist precept that life’s pleasures are transient. Never mind the lovely blossom; there is fruit to enjoy too. I planted a couple of Morello Cherries and have been delighted at how pretty they are, with the dark bark trunks and branches and beautiful simple white blossom. Most of all they produce delicious red fruits

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk –fine food for the birds and for me. The trouble is that as the years go on, the birds seem to remember how lovely they are and now try pulling them off before they are ready. Of all the cherry trees, Morellos are possibly the easiest to grow as the risk of frost affecting the fruit is usually over by the time they are in flower. Generally the trees we buy today are grafted on to a stem of wild cherry. To grow a cherry tree you usually need a depth of soil of about 40cm for their roots to establish. During the life of a tree, fertile new growth is formed on the branches. A variety that has an open habit with horizontal branches will offer the most favourable conditions for fertility. In order for the fruit to form, the flowers of fruit trees and bushes must be properly pollinated. The flowers are pollinated either by insects or the wind. In prolonged cold weather the pollen filament grows slowly and the fruit production is poor. Also low fruiting can be due to poor nutrican and soil, or a drought. Cherries do best in deep soil that is light and gravelly, rich in calcium and well manured. In dry situations they grow poorly and the fruits will be small. In damp places and cold places they can freeze and suffer from sap dripping. The very best position is on a slope protected from the north winds. Spring is in the air, and it is not just the cherries, but all the fruiting trees from Apple, Plum and Pear trees will produce spring blossom. Let’s look forward to longer days being outside. Hurray: it’s been a long, wet winter. Happy gardening!

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
Easter – a busy time! Easter often means different things for different people. For my children, it means time off school, time with family, a long-awaited holiday, not to mention their hope for plenty of chocolate eggs! I imagine they are not alone in this aspiration! However, as a family who believe in the Bible, our thoughts also turn to the Easter story; the way Jesus was tried in an unjust court, tortured and willingly killed in the most brutal way, followed by his miraculous resurrection three days later. While this is the real backdrop to Easter, it’s amazing how forgotten this story tends to be. Ashby Christadelphian Church have plenty going on over Easter, all trying to keep in mind the story of hope behind the holiday. Leading up to Easter our monthly Saturday coffee morning (always the first Saturday each month) will have an Easter theme. As usual it’s a great chance to meet a friend for a coffee, mid-morning

snack and a chat. As always there will be FREE kids craft activities. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, plus every penny taken for food and drinks goes to help local charities – it really is a win win! Why not join us for our Family Easter Service at 10am on Easter Sunday? It’s a lovely opportunity to remember the Easter story and the wonderful hope it offers us today as individuals, families and wider community. So whether the weeks ahead for you are chocolate filled or not, let’s pause and reflect on the real meaning behind Easter – a story about sacrifice, love, and new starts for us all. BOOK REVIEWS
Changes Our books this month are all about change, from shifting viewpoints to rewriting history. Homegoing Yaa Gyasi Homegoing follows the descendants of two African sisters – one sold into slavery, the other married off to a slave trader. We meet warring tribes in Ghana, brutalised slaves on American plantations, men forced into hard labour once slavery has supposedly been outlawed, drug addicts and numerous other characters. Brilliantly written, vivid and, at times, harrowing, this is one of those books you’ll find yourself recommending to anyone who’ll listen. All Our Wrong Todays Elan Mastai No one expects Tom Barren to amount to much. They certainly don’t expect him to go back in time and completely change life as they know it. But that’s what happens. In Tom’s world 2016 looks rather different than it does to us. The discovery of a clean, almost effortless form of energy back in the 60s has made the world something of a utopia. But then Tom becomes the first time traveller, and accidently rewrites history. When he gets back to 2016, everything has changed. Good Me, Bad Me Ali Land Can a child brought up to be a killer change her fate? That’s the question posed in this gripping psychological thriller. Milly is in foster care with a new family and a new name. All she wants is a fresh start. But Milly’s mum is a serial killer, and Milly was the one who put her behind bars. As the trial approaches, Milly has to decide what she wants from life, and how far she’s willing to go to get it.

Stickertopia, The Flower Garden Mitchell Beazley Walk into any bookstore and you’re likely to see at least one shelf dedicated to grown-up colouring books. So it’s not too much of a surprise that sticker books are having a similar grown-up makeover. This one includes 30 garden illustrations, from Klimt’s garden path to the butterfly garden in Bronx Zoo. You can add extra colour and detail with stickers of flowers, leaves, butterflies and birds. It’s surprisingly relaxing, and there’s something rather satisfying about putting your own mark on the designs. Take Courage, Anne Brontë and the Art of Life Samantha Ellis Anne is often seen as the ‘other Brontë’. Most of us would struggle to remember the names of either of her books. In part this is because of the way she’s usually portrayed – quiet, reserved and, well, less interesting than her siblings. Ellis goes to great lengths to show that this was far from the case. Anne’s novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was, in many ways, more subversive and ahead of its time than those of her sisters. As Ellis talks us through her research, a very different Anne Brontë starts to emerge. Take Courage is far from a dry clinical biography; Ellis is clearly indignant at Anne’s treatment and the book is a real pleasure to read. The Art of Contribution Ann Skinner The Art of Contribution aims to help people live a more meaningful life. Life coach Ann Skinner shares her advice for making a positive impact on the world. The book is broken up into short, easily digestible chapters. They focus on lessons that Skinner has learnt herself, from embracing imperfections to contributing not ‘from a place of feeling that some things in the world need fixing, but from a place of wanting to add joy to it’.

Rupinder Gill has joined us as a Clinical Pharmacist and you may be offered an appointment with her instead of a GP or Nurse Practitioner. Rupinder can prescribe and will be seeing you to complete long term condition and medication reviews. She can also deal with urgent on the day prescription queries.
Do you need holiday vaccinations?
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to complete a travel questionnaire
as soon as possible. You can collect a form from the practice or you can complete it online at our website www.castlemedicalgroup.co.uk. Once we have your completed form, our nurses will assess which vaccinations you require. The practice will then contact you to book an appointment in one of our travel clinics. It is important to make your appointment at least 6 weeks before you travel, as you may need a second appointment, approx. two weeks before you travel. Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS. For further information about travel please visit our website. Castle Medical Group 118 Burton Road, Ashby-de-la-Zouch LE65 2LP Tel: 01530 414131

STORYTIME
The Last of the
Wild Chickens
By Jackie Brewster
Vinny burst through the door of the community centre. “You’ll never guess what’s on top of the bike shed!”
“Just grab her firmly around her sides,” Eunice said. “I’ll go and phone the caretaker to see if he knows who she belongs to.”
At the mention of the bike shed Eunice’s heart skipped a beat; had Vinny discovered her guilty secret?
Eunice went back into the community hall and paced up and down. She needed time to think. Within moments Vinny popped his head around the door.
She’d been stacking chairs, assuming that all the members of her ‘Trimmer You!’ slimming club had departed. It had been a tough session. She’d had to be particularly strict with the group about avoiding the temptation of chocolate over the Bank Holiday weekend. There had been tears. Now Vinny was back, his ‘Trimmer of the Week’ rosette flapping in the breeze. “An actual chicken!” he continued breathlessly. “Sat there bold as brass.” Eunice stared at him, her mind racing. A chicken was not what she was expecting. “Don’t be daft,” she reasoned. “There’s no way a chicken could get up there - they can’t fly.” “Try telling that to this one,” Vinny laughed. “It’s probably just a pigeon,” Eunice said firmly, hoping this would be enough to make Vinny finally go home. “I’m no Bill Oddie, but I think I know the difference,” he said. “Come and have a look if you don’t believe me.” Very reluctantly Eunice pulled on her anorak and followed Vinny to the bike shed. A fat brown bantam sat clucking on the flat roof admiring the view. “I wonder where it’s come from,” Eunice said, her eyes searching the rest of the roof. “Someone round here must keep chickens.” “Perhaps it’s been living wild,” Vinny said.
“Mystery solved!” he said cheerfully. “This lady walked into the car park and asked if I’d seen her chicken.” “Who was it?” Eunice hoped her ordeal was finally over. “Someone from the village,” Vinny said. “She said chickens can fly, they’re just not very good at it. Apparently this one’s always trying to escape.” “So it wasn’t a wild chicken then?” Eunice smirked. “No, but I think it was a magic one. Look...” From behind his back Vinny produced a large Easter egg wrapped in pink foil. “It had rolled down the side of the shed. That chicken must have laid it.” Eunice stared first at Vinny in disbelief, and then at the incriminating confectionary. She had one last trick up her sleeve. “A chocolate egg laying chicken!” she gasped. “I’ve heard of them but I’ve never seen one in real life.” She held out her hand for the egg. “I’d better take care of that.” “What are you going to do with it?”Vinny whispered as though afraid to wake it. “Do you think it will hatch?” “Maybe,” Eunice said, “particularly if I take it home and put it somewhere nice and warm.” Which, in a roundabout way, had been Eunice’s plan for that egg all along.
“A chicken wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.” “Well they had to live in the wild originally,” Vinny answered. “This might be the last of the wild chickens.” “We’ll have to get it down,” Eunice said irritably, reminded, more than ever, how annoying Vinny could be. “We can’t lock up and leave it there. Can you reach up and grab it?” “I’m not sure.” Vinny looked worried. “I’ve never held a bird before.” Eunice did not find this at all surprising. The bird ruffled her wings and stared at them indignantly.

CHESS PUZZLE
White to play and annd Life’s never easy. Certain situations spin you round and leave you in a daze. Which way to go? It’s the same with chess. For instance, the more you look at this puzzle, the more you get confused.
win inn inn five fivv mov mooves vess 8 7
Should the queen move first or the rook? Should we try to mate the king, or trap the queen? Is a quiet pawn move the answer?

The game was Adianto v. Milov, Biel 1994.

Best may be a walk in the park, and return to it later.
