SPOTLIGHT ON...
Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity and tell you more about the people running them, their hopes and goals and how we, the local community, can get involved and offer support. This month we take a closer look at Alex’s Wish; a small charity with a big heart. In 2010 Alex Hallam (now aged 10) was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare, extremely serious muscle wasting disease. Typically those affected are in wheelchairs by their early teens, completely paralysed by late teens and die in their early to late twenties. In 2012 Alex’s Wish was founded by Alex’s parents Emma and Andy with a single goal – finding a cure to eradicate Duchenne for all boys affected by the disease around the world. This can only be achieved by raising funding to work alongside leading scientists across the globe to co-fund clinical trials and bring new potentially life-saving drugs to market. Their target is £1,000,000 by 2020. Since then, Emma and Andy, with little previous experience, have worked tirelessly to gain support from local businesses and residents as well as developing their own scientific advisory board to ensure funds raised are only invested in the most promising projects. Partnerships have been formed with Muscular Dystrophy UK and Duchenne UK to work together to beat this killer disease. Each year a number of events are held to raise the much needed funds. Coming up in the next few months there are: Sat 25th February Swim the Channel Swimathon Get fit and healthy whilst raising money for a fabulous cause. Teams of 2 people swim 64 lengths (1mile). Sun 5th March Sky Dive Sunday Experience the thrill of freefall from 13,000 feet, landing a gliding parachute whilst attached to a highly experienced instructor.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
Ashby Museum’s The Museum volunteers are already involved in the 2017 Season. We have two new volunteers and one returning - welcome again to Marjorie Hampson! We would be delighted to recruit more, of course - our door is always open to those who could spend a couple of hours once a fortnight. We are looking forward, with great interest, to the development of Ashby’s “Cultural Quarter” based around the Library, Venture Theatre, Hood Park Leisure Centre and, of course, the Museum. We are also working with Pudding Bag Productions, Ashby Tourist Information Centre, St. Helen’s Church and the Town Council to develop a leaflet linked to the exciting Town Digital Trail, already available through smart phones etc. A reminder that, if you are looking for presents with a local theme, our Museum Shop provides booklets, postcards, notelets, old prints, mugs, tea towels and other objects at very reasonable prices. Visitors also have easy access, through a stand-
Volunteers alone computer, to over 3,000 photographs which can be purchased. Our new website www.ashbymuseum.org.uk - also gives you access to all these photographs as well as providing wideranging information about every aspect of the Museum. The current exhibition features the last 100 years in Ashby’s history. Come and see what was going on in the town in times gone by and how it has evolved and changed. Following on from this will be an exhibition on Ashby clock and watch makers. Friends of Ashby Museum Our next afternoon talk at 2 p.m. on Wednesday 15th March, will be given by Ivan Hallam on local clock and watchmakers in days gone by, ‘Time in a Rural Town’. This will coincide with the exhibition in the Loudoun Gallery. Please phone the museum on 01530 560090 to book a place. The cost is £3 and will include light refreshments.

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option? Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.
I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension? It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.
You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice as any decisions involving a transfer once made are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. This could prove very costly if the wrong decision has been made. Please contact Ian Staley, Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Advisers Limited on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
It’s time to get S.M.A.R.T Setting Realistic goals
As the ‘New Year, New you’ craze has started, I wanted to talk about goal setting and realistic expectations. Every year so many people sign up to gyms in January or decide to conquer some new fitness craze and whilst the enthusiasm is there then it’s great, but it’s when the results aren’t coming that people start to lose motivation and give up. Where do you start
Start by making small changes. Small health or fitness targets are always more likely to be kept than a whole lifestyle change straight away. So, if you are relatively sedentary and want to become more active, start with just 1-2 gym sessions a week or even just a couple of brisk walks. Just set a small goal and stick to it.
How to set goals -
Set ‘SMART’ targets, these are;
Specific - Note down a specific goal, something more than ‘get fitter’. Such as, to be able to run a certain distance, complete ‘x’ amount of push ups or even just to be able to touch your toes! Measurable - Can your progress be measured? Maybe by a time or a distance? Make sure you can measure your progress otherwise you may not see it and feel like giving up. (Our Boditrax system is free to members and ideal for tracking your progress.) Attainable - Is your new goal achievable? If you haven’t run since your school sports day, then trying to run a marathon in 2 months will be hard to achieve. Set yourself a small goal, like walking 3x this week so it’s attainable. Once achieved, it improves confidence, self-belief and makes you feel good, then you can look to setting more goals. Relevant - Is the new goal relevant to what you’re trying to achieve? Does it interest you? Do you have a long term target such a holiday, wedding or other special occasion that your goal is relevant to? Timed - Set a time frame to complete each of your goals. Such as, “I am going to run 1km in 10 minutes by March”. By following these principles, you can set your goals and make healthier life decisions today.
Tip Start by making small changes. Small health or fitness targets are always more likely to be kept

Do I need to join a gym?
How can we help you?
Personally, I couldn’t live without going to the gym every week as it’s my passion and my profession, however I understand this isn’t the case for some people. Some people are nervous of gyms or feel they don’t have the time to attend. If your New Year goal is to start healthier eating or to be more active, then maybe you don’t necessarily need to join a gym. Reasons to join should be personal, don’t join just because your friend did, or because it’s January and you think you need to. If, however, you have a specific goal that you need some equipment for or some help from a fitness professional then a gym or fitness classes may be right for you. Perhaps it motivates you knowing you’re paying for something so you need to use it but whatever your reason or goal, here at Fitness Republic we thrive on having a friendly comfortable atmosphere and helping people like you.
Here at Fitness Republic our aim is to help you achieve your goals regardless of your age or fitness level. We have a great team of friendly professionals that would love to help you and gym programmes are part of the service here at Fitness Republic so we can create a workout plan suitable to your fitness and help you achieve your goals for 2017. So, pop in and see us even if you’re nervous, new to exercise or have had unpleasant experiences with other gyms in the past you can try us out FREE for 7 days first. See you soon

LEGAL TIPS
Legal tips from Each month we ask local experts to share their knowledge, tips and advice. This month we are excited to welcome on board; legal expert Felicity from The Profit Key, Ashby. Below she provides key considerations for sorting out a will. Do you have a will in place? If not it’s worth remembering that a will is the only place where you can name the guardians for your children or dependents. It’s also the only place where you can specify where you want items to go in the event of your death. If you don’t have a will then the law will decide both issues for you. If you aren’t married to your partner, then a will is also critical to ensure that they will receive anything at all, as by law they are not automatically entitled to your estate. Have a will already? Do you know where it is? We always
The Profit Key recommend reviewing your will on a regularly basis, firstly to check it is still valid. Did you know that marriage revokes any previous wills as by law your spouse would be entitled to most of your estate? Similarly, if you are separated but not divorced and haven’t made a new will, your former partner will be treated as though you were still married. One size fits all? Definitely not! There are a number of circumstances that can render a will invalid and templates ‘off the shelf’ will not take into consideration your wishes or possible clashes and problems. At The Profit Key we would always recommend having a full review of your wishes as it may be you need more than just a will to protect and provide for your family in the way that you want. See pages 40 and 41 for the latest advert from The Profit Key and a full list of the services they offer.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Safety & Scams
This month we welcome back Phil Barnfield from PC Clinic with some more top tips on technology… There are several nasty ways that scammers can get hold of your private information, especially on social networking sites. Here PC Clinic outline three key Facebook safety issues that we want you to be aware of, and how to avoid getting caught out:
1.
2.
30
For those not in the know, like-farming is the process where spammers post exploitative and deceptive posts to help their spammy pages accumulate followers. These followers can then be exposed to spam, online scams or the Facebook pages can be sold to untrustworthy marketing companies. Typical scenarios include “like for this”, “share for that”, “like to say Amen” etc etc. Genuine business pages won’t do such “unrealistic” posts, typical ones you often see are a batch of unopened gadgets being given away for free, all you must do is like the post…. too good to be true isn’t it? Having a public Friends list is a default setting on Facebook and really needs changing to prevent scammers viewing your friends. It’s quite simple in theory, a scammer clones your account and sends out requests, and a friend request is accepted. The scammer can attempt to initialize any number of different scams on your friend, which could very well be successful as they would think the new profile is You. It’s called Facebook cloning, and certainly one to avoid – so let’s minimize it happening. Easy to fix by opening your Facebook Profile, click on Friends, and click
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
the pencil icon (top right). You can then change your privacy settings accordingly.
3.
If you receive an image file sent by someone, even your friend, on your Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn or any other social media platform, just DO NOT CLICK ON IT. There have been many reports of simple JPG files being embedded with nasty viruses which can in turn infect your computer. The most recent one being the infamous Locky Ransomware virus, and you really do not want to get this on your computer.
For any further help and advice, pop in to your local computer and laptop centre, PC Clinic in Huntingdon Court. Fully endorsed by Which? Trusted Traders and partners with industry brand leaders – for your peace of mind.

WOODWARD VETERINARY PRACTICE
Local Business News…… Woodward Veterinary Practice has a long history of caring for local pets. Did you know that they have been established in Ashby for over 150 years? The practice was originally located on Wood Street but relocated to South Street back in 1994.
The new location offers improved access and parking and for four years the team have worked to ensure the new practice itself is designed to meet every need as well as coping with present and future demand for veterinary services in and around Ashby.
During their time on South Street the practice has continually expanded and improved with the launch of the ‘ambulance’ service in 2008 offering home visits as well as a collection and delivery service and the addition of a new theatre suite in 2012. The team now consists of six veterinary surgeons, ten qualified nurses and a reception and admin team.
These are exciting times for David Woodward and the team and we wish them the best of luck with the move.
Another move is now on the horizon with relocation planned in March to Ivanhoe Business Park. David Woodward explains; “It has been our ambition for many years to move the practice to purpose built premises, with the need, firmly in mind, for much better facilities for our patients, clients and staff.”

MONEY MATTERS
Financial planning and
bridging the gap
The retirement planning strategy you should adopt will depend on how close you are to retirement. Someone in their 50s, with retirement looming on the horizon, should generally be looking to minimise risk and thinking about their current lifestyle. Someone in their 20s, with a myriad of other financial concerns, may simply decide to try to remain as debt free as possible and begin saving. General strategies At any stage in your working life, the following could help contribute to putting you in a better position when it comes to your retirement. Clearing debts Since it is likely that your income will decrease anyway, the impact of any debt carried into retirement will have a more pronounced impact.
For more detailed advice on how Baldwins can help you please contact Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.baldwinandco.co.uk
An important first step is getting an accurate handle on how much you owe. You may have mortgage, credit card and other personal loans to factor into the equation. The interest rates on these debts are almost as important as the actual amount owed when planning on the best way reducing of them. Freeing yourself of debts takes some of the pressure off in other areas of retirement planning. Boosting your pension contributions Increasing the amount you regularly pay into either your work or private pension will increase the amount available to you when you retire. There is an annual allowance of £40,000 meaning you will be taxed if your savings for each year exceed this. You can, however, top up your allowance with any previously unused allowance from the previous 3 years. 42
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Individuals who earn £150,000 or more will see their annual allowance reduced by £1 for every £2 above £150,000 down to a minimum of £10,000 from 6 April 2016. Boost your state pension If you do not have enough years of paying national insurance, it is possible to ‘buy’ additional years in order to qualify. Your pension options The introduction of the pension freedoms in Budget 2014 were hailed as the most seismic reforms to pensions in decades. From April 2015, individuals were given the option of taking out their full pension pot in cash from the age of 55. This new option now sits alongside annuities and income drawdown plans as strategies for people to consider. You can take 25% of your pension pot tax-free, with the rest being charged at your marginal rate of tax.
NOT JUST GOOD WITH NUMBERS
Financial planning and bridging the gap Plan your retirement planning strategy depending on how close you are to retirement. If you're in your 50s, with retirement looming on the horizon, look to minimise risk and think about your current lifestyle. If you’re in your 20s, with a myriad of other financial concerns, you might decide to try to remain as debt free as possible and begin saving.
General strategies for any time of life: • Clear your debts • Boost your pension contributions • Boost your state pension • Look at pension options

ON THE BEAT
Countering
terrorism
Terrorism is a real and serious threat to us all. To counter the terrorist threat, we need to all work together to tackle the terrorist challenge. We are working closely with key partner agencies and communities to tackle any extremism. Since early 2003, the United Kingdom has had a long-term strategy for countering international terrorism, known as CONTEST. The strategy is divided into four strands: PREVENT, PURSUE, PROTECT, and PREPARE. Over the last few years, City and County partners have successfully developed innovative initiatives as part of the CONTEST Strategy. What can you do to help? Although there is no specific threat to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, it is important that the public remain alert and aware of their surroundings. Together we can fight terrorism and make our communities safer. Report it We want to hear from anyone who sees anything suspicious, be it a vehicle, package or person. These are difficult to define and we advise people to rely on instinct about whether something is suspicious. In any case we would prefer people to call us if in any doubt. We will act on it We will act on information from the public and potential security risks will be taken seriously. This might mean that sometimes roads are closed and buildings evacuated but we are sure that people in the region understand that public safety must always be our first concern and would react in their usual patient manner. Protecting you We are also sending a clear message that we will take action to protect the right of all communities to pursue their way of life as they wish, free of the fear of violence and intimidation.

Helping us to help you Vigilance on the part of the public is one of the best ways of preventing and detecting crime, including terrorist crime. We firmly believe that communities defeat terrorism. Please let us know if you have any suspicions. We don’t mind if it proves to be a false alarm. Who to contact Call 999 if there is an immediate threat to life If you have information about possible terrorist activity, call the police anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789 321 You can also call Leicestershire Police on 101 to report anything that you consider suspicious or connected with terrorism.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
Venture Theatre Celebrates
300th Production The Venture Theatre is getting the New Year off to a cracking start with a very special celebration. There can be few amateur dramatic societies that can claim such a proud achievement, but when A Sting in the Tale opens at The Venture Theatre at the end of February, it will be the Society’s 300th production.
that involves getting rid of the heavily insured wife of one of them, they realize that they have all the know-how to commit the perfect murder!
The Venture Theatre in North Street has been the home of Ashby Dramatic Society since the 1970s but Ashby Dramatic Society goes back even further. It was founded in 1923 by Leonard Matthews, then a master at Ashby Boys’ Grammar School. It has since gone from strength to strength, gathering members and offering the people of Ashby and the surrounding community a rich diet of entertainment ranging from clever farces to serious Shakespeare productions and everything in between.
“I didn’t so much find this play as it found me. It was suggested by one of our members as a possible production, and, as a member of the play reading committee I was asked to read it and give my opinion. Having read it, I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to direct it.”
For their 300th production, the Society is delighted to be offering A Sting in the Tale, one of four stage plays written by Brian Clemens and Dennis Spooner, best known for writing and producing many cult adventure TV series of the 1960s, including The Avengers, The Saint, The Champions and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). It is the story of two murder mystery playwrights, once very successful but now rather hard-up. When a solution to their problems presents itself in a form
It runs from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th February and Wednesday 22nd to Saturday 25th February with tickets on sale, as usual, at Ashby Tourist Information Centre and online at www. ticketsource.co.uk/ashbydramaticsociety.

It is being directed by ADS Chairman, Jim Joyce, who readers may remember, directed the ingeniously staged and brilliantly acted comedy version of The 39 Steps at The Venture Theatre two years ago. He told us:
The play has been described in the media as “a glorious spoof, a send up of almost every mystery thriller written for the stage with some wickedly witty lines” and “a sparkling and laugh-filled evening’s entertainment”.
Ashby Dramatic Society welcomes potential new members. Join them at Club Night on any Monday evening from 8pm and perhaps help them achieve another 300 successful and sparkling productions.

Popular spots are Packington, Swepstone and Heather. Watch and be inspired by the finishers at the bathgrounds. There will be hot food and drink available to purchase at our race village on the bathgrounds for you to refuel. There will also be a children’s fun run held on the bathgrounds which will be organised by Ivanhoe Robins. This is a great opportunity for your children to get active, feel involved and experience fun and the sense of achievement running brings.
COURSE MAP
We want your day to run smoothly! Details of the route and road closures
ROAD CLOSURES One-way operation will be in place for the majority of the race route. Expect some delays and plan accordingly. Vehicles will not be allowed along the side the runners are on. The map indicates the direction of the runners. The one way system will therefore be in a clockwise direction of the route. Marshals will use their discretion to allow residents in and out, always taking safety of runners and vehicles into account. You will not be able to use the roads below in the direction specified, but they will be open in the opposite direction. Two short sections will be fully closed for 10 mins. 3-way traffic lights will operate from 0900 – 1330 at Gallows Lane/Swepstone Road junction. Diversions are in place to avoid Galllows Lane (passing Springs) via Measham, and from Odstone to Heather to get you safely beyond Heather Main St.

VALENTINE’S DAY
Stuck for a
Valentine’s gift?
Try these ideas: 101 Quizzes for couples by Natasha Burton – This is a cute way to rekindle interest in each other. The topics are varied and can be used to kick-start romantic conversations, or just for a bit of a giggle. Have an indoor picnic – If funds are tight set out tea lights in little jars and a pretty throw on the floor. Add some music and unpack a romantic indoor picnic. Bonus points if you can play the guitar of ukulele and provide the music yourself.
Budget flowers or sweets – Red roses and posh chocolates are expensive, so try something more unusual and cheaper…plant a little basket of winter pansies or violets, or buy a teeny little cactus and pop it into a jar with a love note. Or fill a jar with their favourite sweets and decorate the lid with a bow. By Sarah Davey
Personalised phone case – If your partner loves their phone, get them a personalised case to keep it safe, with your own customised with your own message or a favourite photo. Touch-screen gloves – So your partner can text you lovemessages even when they are outside, without their hands getting cold!
Pete & Anna extend a warm welcome...

PANCAKE DAY
Flipping
Fantastic This year Pancake Day is Tuesday 28th February. More traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday, this is the Christian feast day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Lent is a time of sacrifice, so Pancake Day historically was the perfect time to use up ingredients such as eggs and fats which are intrinsic to pancakes. Historically Christians went to Church on Shrove Tuesday to seek absolution, otherwise known as shriving for their sins. So Shrove is taken from the word Shrive. A bell would ring to call people to confession and this became known as the Pancake or Shriven Bell. The date of Shrove Tuesday varies because it occurs 47 days before Easter Sunday which also alters year on year based on cycles of the moon. In the UK there are various traditions associated with this day in addition to the eating of pancakes. These include: Pancake Races: - One of the most famous races takes place in Olney in Buckinghamshire where is it believed the idea of the contest originated. It is said to be based on the story of a local woman who whilst she was making pancakes, heard the Shriven Bell and ran to church still wearing her apron and tossing her pancake in a frying pan to prevent it from burning. For this reason in Olney, racers must be local housewives or men dressed as such and wear an apron and a hat or scarf. During the 415 yard race they have to toss their hot pancake at least three times and the winner has to serve their pancake to the bell ringer and be kissed by him. Other variations of the race include the one held at 66

By Susan Brookes-Morris Westminster School, where the cook tosses a huge pancake over a five metre bar in the playground and boys try to catch the largest piece in order to get a cash prize from the Dean. From the twelfth century onwards, Shrove Tuesday Football Games were played out in the streets and often referred to as mob football. Nowadays only a few games take place as highways legislation has prohibited playing football on the road since 1835. In Scarborough on Shrove Tuesday, it is customary for a large skipping rope to be in place and for up to ten people to be skipping at a time. In some other countries, this date is known as Mardi Gras and is marked by carnivals. These are still linked to the concept of celebrating the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the commencement of Lent. The French translation of Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday.

HOME & INTERIORS
Invaluable
Decorating tips
Planning some changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions.
• The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage.
• For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back.
• Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience.
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink.
• Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with
blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list.
• Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays.
• Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling.
• Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose
wooden shutters for additional sound and draughtproofing, and security.
• Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables.
• A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.
74
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Children’s rooms • Kids’ tastes change rapidly so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary.
• Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers.
• A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage.
• Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime.
• Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes
can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.
Bathrooms • If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories.
• Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space.
• Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false
walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches.
• Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
Love is in the air Well folks, it’s that time of year again – LOVE is in the air..! Red roses, chocolates, balloons, cards – shops stacked full (since Christmas!) of the many symbols we may choose to show our partners, family and friends we love them. Last year over £1bn was spent on Valentine’s Day in the UK alone, with a whopping 65% of people allegedly sending cards. Unsurprisingly, more red roses are sold on 14th February than any other day of the year. All around the world, it’s the day people show their love for someone special. That said, it’s just as important to show our love and appreciation to those same people on the other 364 days of the year. Red roses are lovely (albeit expensive!), but the words ‘I love you’ from a child before bed, or from our parents or friend at the end of a phone call are such priceless, everlasting gifts. The Bible tells us that ‘love is patient and kind… it is not self-seeking’ – it is less about physical gifts

and much more our behaviour that really shows others how much we love them. That’s why it means so much when family and friends want to spend time with you, share a meal or just talk. Perhaps it’s because we know we might not get tomorrow. But God tells us in the Bible, how much He loves us. More than that, He promises to always be with us, to answer our call day or night; He never sleeps. He loves us 365 days a year, forever. Flowers will die, chocolates get eaten, balloons will pop, cards may get lost or thrown away, but the love we can share with each other, and God’s love for us will never fade. Discover God’s everlasting love for you today. Useful Bible passage to look up: 1 John 3 vs 16-18 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

ADVERTORIAL
Alexanders estate agents
Open New Ashby Branch!
Alexanders are delighted to announce the opening of our new branch at 12 The Green, Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The grand opening will be held in our office on Saturday 4th March 2017 between 11:30am and 3pm, with expert advice on offer for anybody looking to sell, let, purchase or re-mortgage their property or home.
As a firm we have rapidly earned a reputation throughout Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire as respected property professionals. Our ethos is to be honest, hard working, communicative, and to work with integrity for our clients. The addition of our new branch in Ashby-de-la-Zouch underlines our support for what is an extremely well thought of town with superb and quality housing stock in the area. Alexanders expansion as a leading light in independent estate agency comes at a time when interest rates for borrowing are at an all time low and demand for property in the town has reached an all time high. It is our belief that exciting times lay ahead for Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the surrounding villages. It is well documented that the property market is prospering across the UK, and this is certainly the case in this pocket of North West Leicestershire. With many buyers priced out of the market in London, the home counties and surrounding areas, our county has seen a flurry of activity from buyers looking to commute to the capital for work purposes. This ripple effect has seen a steady increase in sale prices over the past 4 years; a trend that has seemed to gain traction throughout the last quarter of 2016. Looking forward to 2017 is very exciting for Alexanders. The firm has been selected to become a member of the Guild of Professional 80

IN YOUR GARDEN
Winter shape up Shape up the garden this month with some pruning. It is good for the health of many plants, helping to ward off pests and diseases, and a good trimming routine also improves the general appearance. In winter, most woody plants are dormant and pruning now (February) will invigorate the plant with extra energy and root reserves to help growth on the remaining branches. Bare branches with no leaves makes the frame easier to view and decide on the shape and amount of pruning required. In winter sap is not active and the plant gets less of a shock from pruning and then it is only a short time before the growing cycle starts. Take care to use sharp tools, secateurs, loppers or pruning saws, depending on the size of branch. Sharpened tools will ensure a clean cut and neat pruning; you wouldn’t cut your hair with rusty old scissors and expect a good look! Candidates for a winter tidy include summer flowering trees –such as ornamentals such as Crape Myrtles and Smoke tree and also some Hydrangeas. The varieties paniculata and arborescens can be cut to 1 to 3 feet of the ground. The paniculata variety can be cut back to 2 buds above the base of the flower stem. Fruit trees flower on growth from the previous season, so there will be some flower and fruit loss, but it is still

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk best to do for the vigour of the tree and gives larger and better tasting fruits. Apple and pear trees grown as freestanding (not trained) can be pruned in an open goblet shape with four or five main branches, having all congested central branches cut away. The hybrid tea, old fashioned and climbing roses should be pruned before the new buds break out. For most trees or shrubs remove any dead or dying braches cutting below the affected area. If branches are crossing, cut out the smaller one and prune so that light and air can get into the centre. To maintain a well established shape shorten the previous year’s growth by about one third to an outward facing bud. Any new side shoots can be left to develop fruit buds in the second year. Make a cut in the right place, not too far away from a bud and not too close. The cut should be at an angle – do cut just above a bud, sloping away from it so that any water that hits it can run off and not cause rotting. Do not prune when plants are wet as this encourages the spread of diseases If your trees or shrubs have not been pruned for a while and you need to remove larger branches, then a sharp pruning saw may be required. If the tree is very crowded by old growth the pruning should be done over two or three years. Only when a tree is very oversized could you do summer pruning too – this will reduce growth which is why fruit trees trained as cordons and espaliers. If you do get the pruning wrong, generally there will not be long term damage, like a bad haircut, it will grow out. Happy gardening!

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

STORYTIME
Everyone
Lies
By Jackie Brewster
“Put this on, mate.” Craig threw the crumpled tee-shirt at Gary. “We’ve got to get you looking the part for your big date.” “It smells like wet dog,” Gary winced. “Why can’t I just wear my normal clothes?” “Because this, my friend, is the shirt you’re wearing in your dating profile picture.” Craig watched as Gary squeezed into the threadbare shirt. “Aren’t you amazed I’ve kept it all these years?” “I can’t move my arms,” Gary said. “Remind me why I have to wear this?” “So the young lady can’t accuse you of using a photo that’s ten years out of date.” “But it is ten years out of date,” Gary complained. “Surely when she sees me she’ll notice that I have less hair and more girth?” “Yeah, but by then you’ll be on the date,” Craig said, “and it’ll be too late to back out. And besides, everyone lies on these internet dating sites. When are you meeting her?” “In an hour.” Gary tugged at the tee-shirt. “And what’s she like?” “She’s single and pretty,” he grinned. “She’s got lovely eyes and long brown hair.” “Punching well above your weight,” Craig nodded approvingly. “What does she do for a living?” “She did work in a school, but now she’s started a career in entertainment.” “Entertainment?” Craig frowned. “What’s that all about?” “I don’t know, perhaps she’s a singer,” Gary shrugged. “I suppose I’ll soon find out.” “Does this lucky lady have a name?” Craig asked. “Brenda.” “You’re kidding!” Craig snorted. “How old did she say she was?” “Same age as me, mid-thirties.” “No lasses our age are called Brenda,” Craig sniggered. “I knew it was too good to be true.” “Why would she lie?” Gary asked. “Everyone lies, that’s what I keep saying. Let’s have a look at her profile pic.” He opened Gary’s laptop. “I bet it’s in black and white.” “Give that to me.” Gary wrestled the keyboard back. “Here she is, Brenda Buttons. Gorgeous isn’t she?”

Craig stared at the screen and nearly choked. “She’s pulled a right fast one on you,” he chuckled. “That’s Kate Middleton.” “Who?” “Married to Prince William.” Craig clutched his sides. “Gary, you’re such a berk.” “Perhaps she just looks like her?” Gary said. “Mate, not even in your wildest dreams,” Craig laughed. “Wait, Brenda Buttons! You said she used to work in a school. Wasn’t one of our dinner ladies called that?” “I can’t remember.” “Yeah you can. She was a right battle axe.” “Which one?” “She hauled us in front of the Head after you sprayed yourself with ketchup pretending you had a nosebleed.” “Oh yeah,” Gary grinned, “I remember that.” “That was Brenda Buttons.” Craig folded his arms and smirked. “She’s your hot date.” “She can’t be,” Gary said. “She’d be about a hundred now.” “Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified. “You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.” “It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?” The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen. “She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.” “Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.” Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life.

A WALK IN THE FOREST
A great family walk
Sence Valley This month’s walk is a great one for getting the whole family out and blowing away the cobwebs. The paths are all very good surfaces and well maintained and I would think would be great for youngsters on bikes or in pushchairs (be aware that the hill back up to the main car park is steep though!). If necessary this steep hill at the start and finish can be avoided by driving down to the car park at the bottom of the hill and then continuing around the Horseshoe lake at the end of the walk instead of taking the path uphill to the main car park. Sence Valley is situated on the A447 close to Ibstock, the postcode for sat nav users is LE67 6NW.
1
The walk follows the main paths around the site, with views of the three main areas of water - Stonebridge Pool, Horseshoe Lake and Goss Water. You are likely to see a good selection of water birds on the lakes and the area is rich in other wildlife - there have even been sightings of otters at Sence Valley. Beside the car park is one of the six Noon Sculptures that are situated within the National Forest.
2
From the main car park look for the path which passes between the timber building housing the playgroup (on your left) and the Noon Sculpture (1) (on your right). This leads on to a wide, tarmac, path going down the hill. Follow this all the way down, where you will see a second car park at the bottom of the hill. Just before entering this bottom car park turn right to go through a wooden gateway (2) and onto a gravel path. After a very short distance there is a T junction ahead - turn right and keep following the gravel path as it curves gradually around to the left. Shortly you will cross an attractive bridge over a stream (3). In front of you is the aptly

named, Stonebridge Pool The track narrows a little now, passing by Stonebridge Pool on your left. The path will pass by a public footpath off to Heather on your right and then a path/ bridleway off to your left – ignore both of these and keep straight ahead until you cross a further stone bridge. Immediately after this bridge the track splits and you need to take the left hand branch, which is the wider of the two. Follow this path until it ends, just after going through a wide, wooden, gateway, at a junction of paths with Horseshoe Lake visible ahead of you.
4
Take the path to the right to continue along with Horseshoe Lake now on your left hand side. You will pass by a wooden shelter with a signboard in it (4). Opposite the shelter is a board listing many of the birds that can be seen in the area. Passing over another bridge you will arrive at a junction of paths. On coming to this junction, which is beside the sign for Goss Water (5), you should turn sharp left.
5
You will now be walking along the opposite bank of Horseshoe Lake, with the water on your left hand side still. Continue along, passing a wooden seat on your right hand side, until you see a path leading off uphill to the right. Follow this path (unless you started from the smaller car park at the bottom of the hill, in which case you need to keep straight on). The path goes quite steeply uphill, to come to a complicated looking set of wooden barriers at the top of it (6). Going around the barriers to the left you will emerge in the main car park, at the opposite end to which you left it.
6
All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

PET’S CORNER
Does your pet have
Joint Problems?
Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for:
• • • •
Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk. They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. Your cat’s reluctance to jump on your knee. Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage.
It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable.
102
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility.

AMTG NEWS
Award winning theatre group prepares for 2017 got off to a flying start for the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group (AMTG), with the Group scooping three top awards in the regional pantomime awards. The Pantomime Alliance of Leicester awarded AMTG’s production of Aladdin first place in three separate categories. Karen Jamieson, AMTG’s Business Manager said: “These awards represent a fabulous achievement for a small theatre group such as ours. The Pantomime Alliance has recognised our achievements in singing, costumes and dance - we are so proud of all our dedicated members, our talented wardrobe mistress, Di Whittell, assisted by Barbara Thompson for Aladdin, and our marvellous dance troupe, Dance Network. Everyone here at AMTG plays their part and it’s the teamwork that makes all the difference!” The Group’s next performance is Oliver! 4th to 8th April at the 400 Theatre, Repton School. Rehearsals are in full swing and everyone’s looking forward to stepping out on stage. David McKnight, the show’s producer commented: “Oliver! really has it all - atmosphere, drama, mystery,

romance and fantastic music, it really takes some beating! It’s a great visual show too, we can promise you lots of action and some absolutely fantastic dance routines; this is one of our most vibrant and colourful shows to date. The youngsters are working really hard and I know that our Fagin’s Gang will have the audience enthralled from the outset; as a group they have amazing stage presence.” Whilst there are still a few tickets left, they are going fast and it’s best to visit the box office soon to avoid disappointment. OSTEOPOROSIS
A guide to
Osteoporosis
This month; local expert Sarah Kavanagh of Ashby Osteopathic Clinic, tells us more about osteoporosis. What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a condition affecting the bones which causes them to weaken, and therefore makes them more prone to fractures and/or breaks. In a normal healthy skeleton, the rate at which bone is laid down and reabsorbed by the body is balanced. Osteoporosis occurs when something upsets this balance. Who suffers with Osteoporosis? It is estimated that around 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis. In the UK, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will fracture a bone, mainly due to poor bone health.
For more information on the clinic, to discuss a particular case, or to book an appointment please call Tristan Hill or Sarah Kavanagh on 01530 440 442 or e-mail contact@ashbyosteopath.com or please feel free to visit www.ashbyosteopath.co.uk
Some of the main risk factors for osteoporosis include: age - by age 75 half of the population will have osteoporosis gender - women are 4 times more likely than men to get osteoporosis. This is due to the reduction in the hormone oestrogen following menopause. An early menopause may increase your risk of osteoporosis low body weight, anorexia smoking – the higher the dose the greater the risk
bones until this happens. The most commonly fractured bones are the wrist, hip and spine. Can I be screened for osteoporosis? Yes. You can be sent for either a bone density scan, or a health care professional can work out your risk using a screening questionnaire If I have osteoporosis can it be treated? Once someone has been identified as at risk of osteoporosis a lot can be done to reduce the chance of breaking a bone. This includes:
drinking more than 3 units of alcohol a day.
dietary advice, a balanced diet rich in vitamin D and calcium
People who have been chronically ill and treated with corticosteroids are also more susceptible.
avoiding prolonged bed rest
What are the symptoms of osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is often a silent condition, giving no pain or other symptoms to alert patients to its presence until the worst happens and a bone breaks. As such, many people living with osteoporosis are unaware that they have fragile 114

BOOK REVIEWS

turners
Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The Silkworm Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling)
The Bear and The Nightingale Katherine Arden
Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a missing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hard-boiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away from their centuries-old traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first page.
The Girl Before JP Delaney At first glance One Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books. Hygge Charlotte Abrahams The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life.

The Phantom Tree Nicola Cornick Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was expecting. Historical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine. The Lauras Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling.

CHESS PUZZLE
White to play and
