ASHBY FILM NIGHTS
Big Lottery Fund Win for Ashby Community Ashby Community Cinema who runs Ashby Film Nights has been awarded £7,818 in a major lottery win for the local community. The money was awarded in order to purchase top quality projection and sound equipment for the community cinema project that shows films monthly at The Lyric Rooms in Ashby. The grant offers a life-line to Ashby Film nights which has been showing films at The Lyric Rooms since 2010. This non-profit making, volunteer lead group has been using the services of Centre Screen, the community cinema scheme for Leicestershire and Rutland. But cuts in local government funding have meant that it has become increasingly difficult for Centre Screen to support venues without fixed equipment. The opportunity to purchase a brand new system for Ashby removes this uncertainty. Rob Whyard, from Ashby Community Cinema is delighted. ‘We were thrilled to receive the grant in the Summer of 2016. The new equipment has been installed and it is fantastic - the picture and sound quality are both superb. A huge 3m wide screen drops down from the high ceiling at The Lyric Rooms and 4 pairs of top quality speakers means you can relax and enjoy the film no matter where you sit.’ Why not come and see for yourself! The next film to be screened on the brand new system is the critically acclaimed Ethel and Ernest (cert PG) on

Cinema!
Wednesday 25th January at 7.30pm at The Lyric Rooms. The film is a beautiful true story about the parents of Raymond Briggs done in a simple animated style. It follows their life from 1920s onward encompassing the Second World War, the creation of the welfare state, the post-war age of austerity and the relative affluence of the 60s. Their voices are perfectly provided by Blethyn and Jim Broadbent. Ashby Film Nights is a community venture and aims to provide an opportunity for local people to enjoy great films, at a local venue, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There is an interval to enjoy with a chance to socialise and chat about the film. With the flexibility offered by the new permanent equipment, it is hoped that Ashby Film Nights will continue to show a wide range of films. Films start at 7.30pm with doors and bar open from 7pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available on the door or in advance from Ashby Tourist Information Centre on 01530 411767. For more information contact either Lorna Blease on 07946 610748 or Rob Whyard on 07770 640756. You can also follow them on their Facebook page @AshbyFilmNights to keep up with the latest films to be shown.

A WALK IN THE FOREST
Staunton Harold –
Our paired legs gs sta tan anndd….. d When you do the walk you’ll understand the title! This fun walk is well marked and follows th hrough 13 stiles, each of which hr haas been inscribed with wording. Note the words as you pass and ou complete a quotation, then yo ou’ll tu u ound and discover a different urrn ro quotation on the return journey. Huge thanks must be given to John H Blun B Blunt who had the stiless installed aalon this permissive path allowing along us u to enjoy being led ‘out to o the undisc u undiscovered ends’ and backk to whe w where ‘the g e grass is greener yet’. The walk takes around 2 hours and there is quite a steep slope near the start so it’s probably a bit much for very little ones but older children will certainly enjoy discovering the carved stiles and joining up the wording. We start from the carr park for the Ferrers Centre, within Staunton Harold Estate - the postcode for sat nav users is LE65 1RU. Parking is ut there is a small charge usually free during the week bu at weekends.

At the nd of this path bear right and follow en th he main drive downhill towards the laakes akes. Pass through the impressive ga g gates and continue up the drive for a short distance un ntiil you see a yellow post marking the until start of the permissivee path off to your left. Follow the path through a wooden gaate and up the grassy hillside. ost (2) - the path passes Bear right at the next marker po hing the first of the by a well placed bench before reach grave ed wiith 13 stiles (3). This stile is eng the initials JB and, on the other side, the date the path was opened. Proceed over the stile and follow the path through the woods past the site of the 16 oaks project. Bear left and

then right at the end of the woodland to arrive at stile 2 and the start of the wording - write it down so you can put the whole quotation together by the end. From here you walk alongside a wall, look out for the keyhole that you can peep through (4)! )! C Continue i along the field edge and and then cross stile 3 on your left. After this stile bear right k tto keep the car parkk below you and to your eftt. Follow the path h through a wooded area le to o stile sstil 4 after which h you should turn left and folllo e around to stile 5. The path low the field edge osses the road imm cro mediately after this stile.

Stille e 6 is diagonally across the road to your right and leaaads you into Sprin ng Wood. Follow th he marker posts to be ear right and the en lefft down a wide track before ng right to find d stile 7. The track passes by a turrn rnin peaac aceful pair of benches under the trees (5) before beaaring left to stile tre 8. Continue along the edge of the wood for a short distance to stile 9, e to cross a small where you emerge field to stile 10. Caare needs to be e taken as you reacch the Melbourne road. Go straight over the road an nd ds then down to sttile 11 which lead ep along the righ ht into a field. The gate will e over a stream, and then lead you to a wooden bridge up steps to the 12th stile. Turn left and follow the field edge round d until you come to stile 13 (6) and the end of the Permissiive path.

Cross the fin nal stile to comp plete your quotation before ound and retracing your steps (don’t forget to turning ro n jjourney neyy forr your y note the wording again on your return nd quotation). secon When you arrive back to Staun nton ome e Harold you may like to enjoy so well deserved refreshments at Staunton Stables tea room in the Ferrers Centre. The quotation on the route out is from Hilaire Beloc and may be familiar to you but my favourite is the one on the return trip written by John Blunt.

All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
New Year’s Resolutions you’ll want to keep All too often New Year’s resolutions seem to focus on doing more of what we don’t enjoy, and less of what we do enjoy. So this issue, we thought we’d give you our suggestions for resolutions you’ll actually want to keep. Learn something new
Whether you want to get a qualification so you can get a better job, or you just fancy trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you try something new. www.futurelearn. com is a good place to start. It offers hundreds of free, short online courses. Many are delivered by leading UK universities. You could try writing fiction, exploring digital technologies, or learning about forensic science. If you prefer faceto-face tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history.
Enjoy time outdoors
Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely find you feel calmer and happier as a result.
Take time to cook
Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you could try a 22
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-to-follow recipes.
Appreciate the little things
We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often. Whatever your New Year’s resolution, we wish you all the luck in keeping it.

MONEY MATTERS
Dust off those
January Blues
Well here we are facing into another New Year and another bout of those January blues. Many of you will be doing your best to keep them at bay by sitting with a lovely hot cuppa thumbing through holiday brochures or surfing online. All with a view of searching for blue skies and sun on your back when summer finally arrives. You will probably end up spending quite a few hours searching for your annual jaunt to the sun. Here at Bleathwood we are working hard with those clients who are not just planning this year’s trip away, but when they finally start to work less or even enjoy 365 days off a year, planning the long-awaited opportunity to dust off those winter blues more than once a year. Why is that we spend so many hours on things like planning our holidays, but we fail to set aside 60 to 90 minutes a year to create our future plans, and then even review them? So what is financial planning all about? Well it is more than just sitting down and talking about pensions or your ISA’s. Nor should it be asking questions such as, should I be investing more in China or other Emerging Markets or taking less risk? It is more about what those things are going to do for YOU, why should you do them and how to use them properly. We help our client’s to think about how they map out their finances to help them create the financial future they want and need. We give them the chance to design their finances. We try to take away the guess work. Even try to answer those “what if” questions. Like when can we or I afford to retire, send my children to University, buy that holiday home, travel far and wide. How do we do this? Well we listen, gather the data and start to map things out using a Cashflow 30

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd Modelling tool. Look, financial advice is about advice, not products, they are sometimes the tools you need to achieve the life you need. So why should you do it? Well we are living in a time of low interest rates and potentially rising inflation, it is difficult to find ways of making money work smarter, whilst not knowing how long you need it to last? Add to that statistically we are living longer. Therefore does it not make sense to spend some time on understanding not only what you want, how you can do that and see how the journey looks through regular reviews. They always say – “If you fail to plan then you plan to fail”. So whilst you are suffering your January Blues, further frustrated because you have already broken 1 or 2 of your New Year resolutions, change your thought process, dig out your finances and give them an early spring clean by having a chat with your Independent Financial Advisors. You may never again suffer those January Blues – but we cannot promise that.

FRIENDS OF ASHBY BATH GROUNDS
A Year of Achievement, Heritage and Fun on the Bath Grounds Funded by grants of £40,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £20,000 from NWL District Council, the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds’ Improved Accessibility and Heritage Project has increased awareness of the Grounds’ fascinating history and expanded their use by the public as well as visitors to Ashby. The project has included construction of a new footpath and heritage trail around the Bath Grounds and a host of community heritage education activities – “Have a Go” archaeology; community mosaics; walks and talks; children’s education boxes; a new film and ballad and a revised book on the Ivanhoe Baths and Spa. The new path, connecting the South Street and Prior Park Road entrances, has encouraged use of the Grounds throughout the year and has also opened up new vistas of the Bath Grounds and their surroundings. Last summer, the Bath Grounds were a hive of
archaeological activity with both young and old “Having a Go” with archaeology. Introductory talks in April and May were followed by fieldwork sessions in May, June and July. Sessions were also held in local schools, enthusing children on the wonders of archaeology. The Ashby Arts Festival weekend saw a wide range of community activities including the performance of Lorna Titley’s “Ballad of the Bath Grounds”, featuring over 40 singers accompanied by massed ukuleles. Finally on July 31st: a beautiful new Fish Mosaic was officially unveiled. Created during a series of community workshops, it commemorates the Castle’s medieval fishponds which were located nearby. Lots more about what’s been going on down at the Bath Grounds can be seen at the exhibition presented by the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds at Ashby Library, 21st January to 11th February. Free to all.

YOUR HEALTH
What the Heck is You’d have had to be pretty well snuggled under a mountain of blankets not to have heard about hygge this winter. Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, it’s all about creating a sense of cosiness, of coming together with friends and family, of revelling in simple pleasures. Think warm, fluffy towels, roaring fires and flickering candles. Think good, honest, home-cooked food, shared with friends. Hygge isn’t about buying ‘stuff’, whatever the retailers want us to think. You don’t need to spend money to create a sense of hygge. Wrapping up in a snuggly jumper and going for a walk can be hygge, as can catching up with a friend over coffee. It’s about a feeling, not possessions. It’s about being kind to yourself, and to others. You could…
• Curl up in PJs and a snuggly blanket, drink hot chocolate and read a book. • Light that scented candle you’ve been saving. • Stop trying to multi-task; turn off your phone and focus on the moment. • Bake some gooey chocolate chip cookies.
Hygge?
• Invite a neighbour over for a cuppa. • Send a loved one a letter. • Soak in a bath with a few drops of aromatherapy oils. • Explore the great outdoors with your family. • Turn off your phone. While fashions come and go, hygge is one trend that’s very much worth indulging in. Enjoy.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Greenhouses
Whenever there is a garden with a greenhouse I am sure there must be a keen gardener somewhere about. This is because a greenhouse gives a gardener an opportunity to do more garden activities than our climate would ordinarily allow – to take root cuttings, grow tender plants and delicate seedlings, even to propagate trees and of course some vegetables and salads all year round.
Ideally a greenhouse is located in a sunny place away from other buildings and is usually partially set into the ground, or the surrounding area is raised by an embankment. The lower brick walls are built about 20cm higher than the surrounding ground on prepared foundations. The golden rule when designing your own is making the door big enough to wheel in your wheelbarrow. Floors, brick or slabs are set to a fall so puddles don’t form after you have watered your plants. Heating could be linked to a house’s central heating system and the temperature can be regulated by a radiator, but frequently now separate electric or even gas heaters are used. A polythene sheet or bubble wrap fixed to slats helps reduce cooling. Conversely, in sunny weather, a greenhouse will need to be ventilated and possibly shaded, all depending on what you are growing. Early brassicas and lettuce for example, will

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk require a temperature of about 16-18 degrees Celsius, and peppers require around 22 degrees. Enthusiasts of rock plants and alpines find a greenhouse invaluable. A partly sunken unheated greenhouse with large opening windows for ventilation (plenty of light and fresh air) is perfect. An alpine greenhouse is usually lined up north to south. Side benches are covered in pebbles and a layer of river sand and fine gravel. Containers are often earthenware and sunk into this drainage layer. This is also a great environment to grow sensitive bulbs such as some miniature narcissi and some cyclamens, orchids and primroses. In the past, greenhouses used to be positioned at the end of a garden, out of sight, or masked by planting, but these days there are ones available in all manner of styles and colours of wood, metal and composite materials. No longer out of sight, as a focal point at the end of a path or a centre piece, I believe the least green fingered people could have “greenhouse envy”! In terms of shape and decorative features they can be hexagonal or attractive lean-to designs, not just a traditional rectangular shape. Nowadays, a greenhouse can be coordinated with other garden features, buildings, sheds or summer houses in terms of design, frame and colour. Frequently vegetables are sown in trays or boxes, all of which should be disinfected before use. Potting composts are usually disinfected by a steaming process so that pest embryos, funguses and diseases are destroyed. Don’t be put off by the detail of this good husbandry and if you want quick results, particularly for children, sow directly into pots cucumbers, melons or sweetcorn.

CASTLE MEDICAL GROUP
Happy New Year We can’t believe that we have already celebrated our first anniversary at Ascebi House! We’d like to thank you all for your continued patience whilst we settled into the new building and also during the change of clinical systems. We would also like to thank the Patient Participation Group (PPG) for all their hard work last year, especially with regards to the move and organising the patient survey. You said - we did: We may not always appear to take your views on board, but please be assured that where we can, we implement the necessary changes. One of the things raised was our call answering times and we are proud to announce that these have been improving dramatically; we have employed more receptionists, a new nurse practitioner and two new salaried GP’s, Dr Pritesh Mistry and Dr Kathryn Oliver. Prescribing The NW Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has issued new guidance for Coeliac prescription
allowances. If you are issued n with Gluten free products on prescription you may have already been contacted by letter. There will also be a reduction in the amountt of prescribed medication that can be bought over the counter – most of which is a lot cheaper than the cost of a prescription. New Year’s Resolution Don’t forget to make your appointment with one of our Nurses for your Long Term Condition Review. Help needed We are always thinking of ways to help our patients with their health issues and to this end we are raising funds with the help of the PPG to obtain a blood pressure machine for reception at a cost of around £5,000. If anyone would like to help fund raise or wishes to make a donation, please contact Caroline Robinson at caroline.robinson@gp-c82014.nhs.uk . VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
Well, it’s that time of year again... New Year Resolutions – what’s yours? Thinking of trying something new? Perhaps you would enjoy being a member of our theatre. We welcome new members to help in all areas. We are already planning our next three productions and this is the ideal time to think about coming down and reading for a part. During January, Director Dave Steward will be casting his April production, Be My Baby. Amanda Whittington’s much-loved 1960s comic drama follows the fortunes of four young women who have been sent to a church run mother and baby home, where they will give birth and then be forced to give their babies up for adoption. The women are aged between 17 and 20 so we are looking for actresses aged 17 to late 20s. All four roles are substantial and offer great acting opportunities - plus a bit of light-hearted singing and dancing! Rehearsals are two to three nights a week, beginning early March.
Our auditions are verry informal and those for Be My Baby will take place in January (dates tbc). If you would like to read for a part in thiss exciting production, there are several wayys i t t you can register your interest: • drop your contact details in at the Venture Theatre on Monday Club Night from 7.45pm • email your contact details to ashbyventuretheatre@gmail.com • send your contact details by private message to our Venture Theatre, Ashby de la Zouch Facebook page. Alternatively, look for announcement of dates on our Facebook page or website www.ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk We look forward to hearing from you!

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
Deals, Sales, Offers! Everyone loves a good bargain, especially at this time of year.
The fitness industry is no different. January is the month when many of us start to pursue healthy living New Year resolutions. And joining a local gym is often part of that. If you’re planning to get fitter and healthier this year, here’s a bit of inside information to help you make the right decision about the ideal gym and fitness venue for you.
The real cost of a gym membership
Many gyms offer lots of different deals to entice you into a membership. But are they always offering you good value? Let’s break it down. Here at Fitness Republic our gym membership is £29 per month. Now, if you were to attend once per month, then that’s £29 per visit, which I’m sure you would agree is expensive. However, if you were to attend 3 times per week for the month it works out at an average of £2.41 per visit which is great value. The actual cost of the membership then comes down to you, and how much you use the club. Before you sign-up for a ‘too good to be true offer’, make sure you realistically think about the logistics of the facility and the likelihood of attending a gym to ensure you get the best value for money, and the right results for you.
Facilities vs Support
With so many fitness clubs about these days, many companies will give you the hard-sell on their facilities for example plush changing rooms, new equipment and extra’s like towel hire. But remember, when all is said and done, we generally attend a gym to get results, whether that’s weight loss, muscle building, increasing our fitness levels of just generally improving our wellbeing. As the song says, ‘It ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it’. Expert support, help, friendly advice and being personally looked after is the key to unlocking your full-potential. After all a treadmill is a treadmill wherever you go - it’s how you use it as part a personalised programme that matters. Your programme should be aimed at getting you the desired results and keeping you motivated – the equipment enables your hard work and it doesn’t do it for you.
Consistency gets results
Choosing a facility that you feel comfortable with is a real priority, as regular attendance is the number one factor in getting results. You need to feel comfortable, have some social engagement with other members and feel supported by the team. Your aim should be to find a place where you’re made to feel very welcome and all the staff know your name after the second visit.

Try before you buy
A gym membership is commitment and an investment in you. But like any significant purchase, you will need time and space to make an informed decision. Here at Fitness Republic, we offer a 7-day free trial period where you can try us out for a week and see if you like our team and venue. There’s no pressure or obligation to join, and if after 7 days you say it’s not for you, then no problem. Don’t ever be forced or feel pressured into joining a gym. It can and should be a life changing decision, so take your time and try before you buy.
Contracts and commitment
Most facilities will offer you some form of contract when you join. This is not a bad thing. For any exercise plan to work you need to give it time, so a small commitment should be viewed as a positive and powerful tool as it should provide you with motivation, even in the early stages. As you may have heard, it can take up to 12 weeks of consistent training for it to become a habit - so stick with it and it will become easier, I promise!
Our deal to you
AT FITNESS REPUBLIC we are 100% dedicated to you. Our friendly and expert team will help you develop your workouts and programmes and keep you positive and motivated. Our fitness and wellbeing venue is a comfortable place to be and everyone is focused on getting results and enjoying themselves. We have a very social club here where members make friends and training partners. After all, I met my wife Sarah at the gym and we’re now happily married! This January, start a new healthy year. Pop into the club to pick up your 7 Day free trial pass or visit www.fitnessrepublic.co.uk and fill in the form on our home page. We look forward to seeing you and helping you make 2017 a great year.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
New Year, New You? What a stark contrast a few weeks make. The end of December is full of excitement and excess, yet within just a few weeks we can be knee deep in cold turkey and January blues, perhaps feeling a little overindulged, overweight, and usually overdrawn. This is probably why so many of us turn to New Year’s resolutions; vowing to lose weight, consume less chocolate and ditch addictions, whilst endeavouring to improve fitness, build relationships and generally trying to be a better person. Ironically, even with the greatest of intentions, 25% of New Year’s resolutions don’t last the first week, the majority never last the month. Even though we know this, we still make them; craving the new beginning, turning over that new leaf, leaving the old life behind with all its problems, looking for a brighter future. There is a scriptural Christian principle that
74

underpins this very idea. The Bible encourages believers to take a u-turn on mistakes and problems, put the issues behind them and try harder to do better next time. All God wants from us is to see that we are genuinely sorry and trying to put our lives back on track. This exercise isn’t restricted to just once a year – a u-turn is something we can do at any time, and as many times as we need. Fortunately for us, God is a merciful and forgiving God.
So, will you start this year weighed down with the usual bunch of short-lived resolutions, or will you perhaps look a little deeper and resolve to really turn your life around by showing God how much you want to change? ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
Think of a museum as a Human place Despite all the glass-encased objects, despite the fancy signage, it is people who make museums. These people are as eager to tell their stories as you are to hear them. Be an active museum-goer, visit with a deliberate purpose and intention. Do you want to know more about the Edwardian lady parachutist, Dolly Shepherd, read about the First World War Victoria Cross hero, Philip Bent or learn about Ashby’s history as a Spa Town? Decide to find out. Check out our new-look website for information. We’d love to share the stories with you. Our Museum collects, preserves, researches and exhibits but the average visitor only takes advantage of the exhibits. If you could spare a couple of hours a fortnight, do get in touch with us about how you can help to keep our museum in the forefront of Ashby’s life.
Call us on 01530 560 090 or come and see us in person, preferably on a Monday or Wednesday morning. We are delighted to welcome Mary Lumsd den, who joined us recently, as a new voluntteer. The current Christmas exhibition had been very well received and will stay in place until midJanuary when it will be followed by an exhibition of Ashby in the 20th century, highlighting the years 1917 and 1967 (100 and 50 years ago). We do mount temporary exhibitions roughly every two months, covering a range of topics. The Museum is grateful for another Shire Grant from our County Council. This has enabled us to update our I.T. equipment, facilitating the smooth running of our archives department.

HOME & INTERIORS
Declutter for the
New Year
What could be a better New Year’s resolution for your home than to eliminate mess, create space and generally have a good sort out?
If too much mess and clobber has built up in your home over the past year, then it’s time to declutter your stuff and sort your storage, so that your home will be mess-free and super-stylish in time for 2017. First, grab some rubbish bags and a few boxes or baskets. Work methodically through each room and sort out obvious rubbish, things that can go to a local charity shop, items that could be sold secondhand, anything that needs mending, little-used things that can be put away in the garage or loft, and genuinely great stuff that you want to keep. Try to get rid of as much as possible, only holding onto things that you really need and/or love. With what’s left, it’s now time to work out where it will go. Label your storage if necessary, and make sure the whole family knows what’s meant to go where. If you still need extra storage after your clear-out, look for all the areas where you could fit more in, whether built-in or free-standing: from backs of doors to under the stairs, tops of wardrobes to under the bed. Think racks, hooks and shelves as well as conventional cabinets and chests of drawers and, where possible, ensure they co-ordinate with existing furniture. You can also relocate some storage; for example by adding a storage unit in the living room to avoid having to tidy toys away upstairs every day. There are a few rules of storage that might be helpful. First, store like with like and match the size and shape of the container to what’s being kept inside (in other words, find small, lidded boxes for things like Lego and big squishy baskets for teddy bears). Store as much as possible near to where it’s most needed, but don’t store frequently used items below knee level or above shoulder height, 86
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
especially if they’re heavy. Avoid storing things on surfaces such as tables or desks, and allow yourself room to expand – but only within reason. If you have allowed extra space, and then filled it… it’s time to start all over again. Easy ways to banish clutter
• Write a list of where you want to declutter. • Have an intensive declutter workout and spend
five minutes clearing as much as you can in one area. You’ll be amazed at the difference you can make. Repeat as often as you can.
• Hang your clothes up with the hooks all facing
one way, and only turn the hook the other way when you wear something. After, say, six months, you can easily assess which items you never wear. You could try the same idea in the kitchen (turn mug handles in one direction, put glasses upside down, and so on), the playroom, the living room…
• Make it a family competition with prizes. Who
will be the fastest to find three things to throw away, three things to give away and three things to tidy away?
• If what you need is some emergency
decluttering, pop everything into a big box and hide it somewhere until you have time to go through it properly.

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option? Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.
I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension? It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.
You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice as any decisions involving a transfer once made are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. This could prove very costly if the wrong decision has been made. Please contact Ian Staley, Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Advisers Limited on 01530 567020 for a free initial consultation.

ON THE BEAT
Keep Safe Club Leicestershire Police’s ‘Keep Safe Club’ is a new initiative which aims to introduce and reinforce key safety messages to primary school children aged 7 to 11 in a fun, interactive and age appropriate manner. The workshop is conducted by police officers and PCSOs in order to build a positive relationship with the police and increase understanding of what the police do. It aims to give the children the skills to report incidents with the knowledge that they will be taken seriously, and inspire confidence in their interactions with the police. We also explore what it means to be a good citizen by promoting positive behaviours in the community while developing an understanding of personal responsibility. We look at raising awareness of personal safety, including safer use of the internet. This is done alongside aiming to develop personal safety awareness giving the children confidence, and the

tools needed, to stay safe when presented with risky situations. The workshop requires around half a day and can be provided for a single class at a time or larger groups, such as a whole year group. We can also deliver to other youth groups that cover the same age range, such as Brownies and Cubs. It couldn’t be easier to register your interest in a workshop. Go to the Leicestershire Police website, select the Advice and Information page, and then onto Kids’ Zone. Complete the booking form and then send it to school.workshops@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk If your school or group has any additional special requirements, please email: school.workshops@ Leicestershire.pnn.police.uk to discuss.

Fresh Start
BOOK REVIEWS
A
The start of a new year is often the time when we take a critical look at our lives and think about making some changes. Whether you want to take up a new hobby or start your own business, this month’s books are for you… The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A Simple, Effective Way to Banish Clutter Forever Marie Kondo If you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of ‘stuff’, this book might help. Kondo encourages us to only keep those possessions that ‘spark joy’. There is some waffle in places, but stick with it. There are some great tips and tricks. Most importantly, Kondo helps the reader to think about the emotions connected to items, and the kind of life they could have if they lived in a simpler, less cluttered space. The Girl in the Garden Melanie Wallace A single teenage mum, a grieving widow, a photographer, a recluse, a man trying to do what’s right. Characters with very different outlooks and lives, but their stories are all entwined. And their flaws, hopes and buried dreams are all too identifiable. They all have lessons that need to be learnt if they’re to take those first tentative steps towards a better life. The Idea in You: How to Find It, Build It, and Change Your Life Martin Amor and Alex Pellew If you’re fed up with the daily grind and thinking of starting your own business, this book could give you the kick start you need. It’s packed with advice and encouragement for turning ‘your daydream into dynamite’. There are case studies, exercises, and useful resources, along with plenty of practical information. And, unlike many other books in this genre, it’s also actually enjoyable to read.

Making It Up As I Go Along Marian Keyes In this collection of essays, Keyes gives us a hilarious insight into her daily life and thoughts. While it’s laugh-aloud funny, there’s also a good dose of reflection. Keyes isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself and reveal her own vulnerability. By doing so, she reminds us that often we’re our own worst critics and sometimes we need to just go easy on ourselves. The Great British Sewing Bee: From Stitch to Style Wendy Gardiner Those looking to indulge their creative side in 2017 could find plenty to tempt them here. The companion book to the fourth series of the BBC2 show The Great British Sewing Bee, the book offers advice on everything from choosing fabric to altering designs. There are also more than 25 patterns included with the book, with projects ranging from a Babygro to a cocktail dress. Aimed at all abilities, this could well prove to be indispensable for new and experienced sewers alike. Bloom: Navigating Life and Style Estée Lalonde Beauty and lifestyle vlogger Lalonde has gained a legion of fans, and much critical acclaim, for her daily musings on style, beauty, food and life in general. In Bloom, Lalonde talks about the highs and lows of her life, including overcoming depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. A beautifully designed book for dipping in and out of when you need a bit of inspiration.

BEAUTY TIPS S
Achieve
optimal skin health in 2017
with our resident beauty expert, Emma from Rose Beauty! It’s the New Year and thoug ghts turn to making a fresh start, maybe eating g healthier, but what about your skin health? Skin health is not merely the absence of disease, it’s a lifestyle. Whether it’s getting enough sleep, exercising or maintaining a healthy skin regimen, it’s important to make healthy living a part of your gimen will ensure your life. Having a healthy skin reg cleanest, brightest and smoo othest skin. After all skin is something we ‘wear’ everyd day! Cleanse Soaps are alkaline and can ch hange the skin’s natural acidic pH, resulting in irritatio on and dehydration. To prevent the irritancy of alkkaline soaps, look for formulations that are pH-balaanced. Exfoliate Exfoliation is the process of helping your skin shed its dulling outermost layer. Skkin naturally exfoliates less as we age, resulting in a dull complexion. For a smooth, healthy and even complexion, use a mild exfoliant once daily.
Moisturise Layering on makeup, the environment, air conditioning and central heating can all result in the loss of the vital moisture in our skin. Without proper shielding and replenishing, this can result in dehydration, wrinkles, and sensitivity. Choose an appropriate moisturiser - for an oilier skin, try a lightweight moisturizer that provides effective oil-free hydration while improving skin texture and for drier skin, use a richer formulation with antioxidant power that quenches dehydrated skin without adding excess oils. Tone It’s important to choose a toner that doesn’t strip the skin but adds a layer of moisture. This New Year is the perfect time to make those essential changes. Let’s have a more beautiful 2017!

YOUR WELLBEING
Post Xmas Blues Any event that includes planning and excitement such as a wedding, holidays and of course Christmas, can create huge ‘post event’ low moods. In particular, after Christmas and New Year, many people can find that the shorter days, grey skies, and the impact of high sugared foods, excess alcohol and late nights can lead to a real drop in mood. Other stressors can also be due to family issues over the holiday period. People who suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) can find January a particularly difficult month along with those who have a history of depressive episodes. New Year resolutions can be a great way of making changes to your life but should not necessarily start in January as this is also the time of the year when you are most likely to fail. Whilst we can’t change the seasons or the weather, we can plan and manage these difficult weeks. Deciding what changes you want to make to your life is good - make a plan, prepare for these changes but don’t necessarily start them
104
when you are already feeling low. Plan some social activities for January so you have something to look forward to. If you have new hobbies or interests as a goal, January may be a good time to start these giving you some new challenges. The most important part of all this is being kind to yourself at this time of year. Early nights, relaxation techniques and making ‘me’ time a priority. Also accepting that the low moods are an inevitable part of this time of year and will pass as the days start to get longer. Futureminds can help you make these changes please see our advert below or visit our website at www.futureminds.co.uk

STORYTIME
The Science of Snow
Shovelling
By Jackie Brewster
Maurice laced his boots up eagerly, pleased with himself for remembering to get the snow shovel out of the shed last night. Thanks to a thick blanket of snow, this Sunday morning was the perfect opportunity to win back the favour of Mrs Harby, his comely neighbour. What woman could resist a man with a shovel? And when it came to snow and the shovelling of it, Maurice considered himself quite the expert. He opened his front door and was met with an unwelcome sight. Mrs Harby’s teenage grandson, Dale, was already pacing her drive wielding a shovel of his own. Maurice’s last encounter with Dale had ended with a line full of Mrs Harby’s sheets going up in flames. The boy was a menace, and, by the looks of things thought Maurice, his snow shovelling technique was a disgrace. Rather than methodically working down the driveway, Dale was randomly throwing snow everywhere. “Can I give you some advice young man?” Maurice called over. “You’re going about that all wrong.” “Nah, I’m alright,” Dale called back. “You’re just making more work,” Maurice said. “I’m sure your grandmother would like to get her car off the drive at some point.” “Yeah,” Dale said, hacking at the ground. “She’s going out for Sunday lunch.” “Anywhere nice?” Maurice liked to keep abreast of all Mrs Harby’s comings and goings. “I didn’t ask.” Dale kicked a pile of snow. “I’d better lend a hand.” Maurice strode purposefully across with his shovel. It was time to impress the lady by taking control of the situation. “You know what would get this done quicker?” Dale said, stumbling into a snow drift. “Chucking down some hot water.” “That’s where you’re wrong,” Maurice said. “The only way to clear this drive is with hard work. Hot water will do more harm than good.”
Good lord, Maurice thought, don’t they teach them anything at school these days? At least with the boy gone for a few minutes he could get on with the job properly. Dale returned with a freshly boiled kettle. “Out the way,” he said, “I’m going to pour this.” “Don’t,” Maurice said. “It’ll just make matters worse.” “Course it won’t,” Dale said. “Just to prove it, do a patch test,” Maurice said. “Pour a small amount somewhere that your grandmother won’t tread and see what happens.” “Good plan,” Dale said. “But if it works we’ll pour it everywhere.” If it works I’ll eat my shovel Maurice thought. “Somewhere she definitely won’t tread?” Dale said. Mrs Harby opened the front door, elegantly dressed for her lunch date. “Morning!” Maurice gave a dignified bow. “We’re conducting an experiment.” “How lovely,” she said. This is wonderful Maurice thought, not only will she be pleased with me for clearing her drive, she’ll be impressed by how I’m educating her grandson. “Go ahead lad,” he said indulgently. “Whenever you’re ready.” Dale stood next to his grandmother’s car with the kettle held high, a cloud of steam coming out of the spout. Then, before Maurice could stop him, Dale poured the scalding water all over the windscreen. There was a sickening crack as the glass shattered into a thousand irreparable fragments. Maurice’s face drained of all colour. “Oh mate!” Dale laughed. “You were totally right.” Mrs Harby scowled and stormed back inside the house, slamming the front door behind her. Maurice’s next challenge to impress Mrs Harby was how to get a windscreen replaced on a snowy Sunday morning. And the less Dale was involved in that the better.
“Yeah, right,” Dale said sarcastically, throwing down his shovel. “I’m off to get some.”

CHESS PUZZLE

What are the challenges for the new Year? Many I’m sure. But those that really matter are your challenges. They start with this puzzle – a hard one. It occured in a swashbuckling game between Vic Knox and Jeff Horner in London, 1973. The position is frightening just to look at, with both kings in extreme danger.
For a more relaxed game of chess, why not come to your local chess club at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Phone Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details.
Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 116 - should you need it!

Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The stuffing I'd nibbled, the turkey I'd taste, the yummies I'd eaten, gone straight to my waist. So away with the last of the sour-cream dip, get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip. Every last bit of food that I like must be banished, until all the additional ounces have vanished. I'll phone Breedon Priory to book an induction, it's much better value than liposuction! Their expert advice and well equipped gym, is sure to help me get back in trim. Goodbye to my belly and generous rear, I'm going to exercise and get fitter this year! 120
