LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
Ashby’s Purple Flag Award Bars, restaurants and businesses in Ashby joined forces to host a Purple Flag party on Saturday 25th November to celebrate and spread the word that Ashby is a fabulous place to visit and enjoy during the evening. It’s official after we were awarded the Purple Flag for excellent and safe nightlife. What is Purple Flag?
Purple Flag is an accreditation similar to Blue Flag for beaches. Purple Flag is awarded to towns and cities who meet or surpass the standards of excellence not only in the town offering a varied lively evening experience but also in managing the evening economy well. Ashby’s application showed good practices, high occupancy rates on retail and leisure premises, low crime figures, a diverse, entertaining, safe, enjoyable night out for the whole family. Partners who steered the Purple Flag application to success included included, North West Leicestershire
10
District Council, Leicestershire Police, Safer North West Community Safety Partnership, Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, Ashby Street Pastors and Ashby Pubwatch Scheme. Sarah Walker, ENTE/Purple Flag Programme Manager said; “There are now over 70 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland who are proudly flying the Purple Flag after working hard to gain accreditation. The award is not just about safety, but also the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and nighttime offer.” So feel proud of our town and remember to stay local and use all the retail and leisure businesses we have here whether it’s the Venture Theatre, the library, museum, Hood Park leisure centre, restaurants, tea rooms or shops.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE
Will St Helens feature on your list of New Year’s Resolutions? We’ve certainly been on lots of people’s ‘to do’ lists already, with over a thousand visitors having participated in the St Helen’s Heritage Project since it began 18 months ago. This means that we are now half way through this Heritage Lottery Funded project. Time flies. We have lots on our ‘to do’ list too! Our engagement with schools programme is being planned, as is our invitation to groups to come and visit us for guided tours and talks. Llynda Baugh, our Heritage Officer, is very happy to come out and give talks to groups. We have a fascinating project here and are uncovering some very interesting archaeological and historical stories as we go along. Please get in touch if you would like to visit us or Llynda to visit you. As the dark nights and colder weather has arrived, we are changing to seasonal opening hours: Our regular Wednesday and Saturday opening hours are now 10.30 – 1.00pm on both days until Easter. In the spring we hope to start our Heritage Cafes once a month, along with family learning days.
There is so much to do. Could you help us? We are always looking for volunteers to help with our events, activities, research, welcoming, tour guiding and a myriad of other things. Please contact us if you have a New Year’s Resolution to do something different with your time. We would really appreciate it. For more information on our project, please look at our website: www. sthelensheritage.co.uk or our Facebook page: St Helens Heritage Ashby.

A WALK IN THE FOREST
New Year
Challenge!
It’ss that time again when we nter into the coming year full en off new resolutions and good ntentions. Last year The in elegraph reported that the Te op 2 new year’s resolutions to were to exercise more and to w ose weight. Walking is often lo overlooked but it is easy, costs o nothing, and is a brilliant way n to become fitter and healthier. It is also good for h yyour mental health, helping you clear your mind l d and reconnect to the natural world. Whether you are a seasoned walker or someone who has slipped out of the habit of making time for regular exercise now is a wonderful time to set some goals and give yourself a walking challenge for 2018. Here are just a few ideas to help with that first step towards a fitter, more active year.
Charityy Walks
Taking on th he challenge of a charity walk is a wonderful way to get yourself motivated and your legs moving! Last September the Ashby Life team completed the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge raising over £900 for Charity Link. We had a brilliant day and finished the walk tired but happy and I’m sure we’d all agree that after all the training and the walk itself our fitness levels were much higher than earlier in the year. Find out about this year’s 3 Peaks Challenge online at charity-link.org (click on Get Inv Involved). If you jusst can’t wait until Se eptember to co omplete your ch hallenge (or fancy so omething a little sh horter) then how ab bout the W Woodhouse May Day Challenge? Taaking place on Monday 7th May the entrance fee for this 13 mile walk includes refreshments en route and a hot lunch - the money

raised supports local charities. Find out more at www.woodhouse-may-daychallenge.co.uk. Top tip for those undertaking a challenge walk is to plan training well in advance. Vanessa and I did a weekly walk together starting about 10 weeks before the event and gradually increasing the distance every week.
Long Distance Walks
Pe erhaps you are already a regular walker and jusst want a new challenge for 2018 - how about completing one of our long (or medium) distance routes? The National Forest Way is a 75 mile route that starts at Beacon Hill in the Charnwood Forest and d finishes by the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas. It breaks down neatly into 12 sections so you could complete one each h month. Instructions for each secttion are available to down nloaad from www.nationalforestway.co.uk.
Start Small, Keep Motivated
Maybe you’re not that much of a walker and don’t really know how to start? Set yourself some small achievable goals and gradually increase but make sure you are having fun too! How about buying a walks book (the Tourist Info in Ashby have a good selection) and exploring one walk from it each month - you can start with the shortest and work your way up to the longest. Or you could join up with friends or family to do the walk from this magazine each month. If you are a bit unsure then consider joining a walking group. Groups are a good way to make new friends and explore new places and most offer walks of varying distances - check www.ramblers.org.uk for details of local groups.
Happy walking in 2018!

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
Local charities benefit from
The Co-op Community Charity Fund!! On Saturday 25th November the Derby Road branch of The Co-operative store in Ashby held a celebration day to hand over cheques to three lucky local charities. In total over £10,000 was collected in the last year for community causes and representatives were invited down on the day to receive the funds. Across the year, the money was raised through the Co-operative Membership Rewards Programme. When a customer signs up to become a Co-op member each time they buy Co-op own brand goods money is earned for both the customer (5%) and the local community charity fund (1%).
4TH ASHBY SCOUTS
The three local causes who benefitted this time were Home Start North West Leicestershire, 4th Ashby Scouts and St Helen’s Church, Ashby.
Holy Trinity Playgroup have been chosen as the new community group to benefit in 2018
Holy Trinity is an Ashby based committee-run playgroup which has been running for 51 years. They take up to 70 children per academic year and provide support for the children and their families. They provide high-quality childcare by trained and experienced professionals, and our aim is to continue to help our community in this way for at least another 50 years! Emma Ricketts from Holy Trinity Playgroups explains, “We would like to transform our outside space, including the installation of our very own kitchen garden, to complement our existing mud kitchen. In addition to the structure itself we require a shelter, decking and flooring. We will then need all of the equipment and supplies to bring it alive: bulbs,
HOME START
ST. HELEN’S CHURCH seeds, herbs, plants, containers, pots, tools, utensils, waterproof clothing, gloves, a water butt, sand, gravel and lots of mud! Being outdoors gives children the chance to connect and learn about nature, to be creative and invent their own role play games. It allows opportunities for early maths and science activities. Mud kitchens and kitchen gardens are recognised as key activities for younger children, providing outdoor learning opportunities such as sensory, imaginative, creative and exploratory. And, seriously, what child doesn’t love to get messy?!” So make sure to sign up as a Co-op member and next time you pop in for a pint of milk or a loaf of bread you’ll also be supporting your local community…….

As I’ve got older it’s no doubt things have got harder, my body’s a little stiffer, I’m not quite as strong as I was in my 20’s, getting to the gym is a little harder with family commitments. You might have seen it in the press lately or on social media that we’ve recently improved our gym and doubled its size. It was a plan I’d had well over a year ago as I love training so much I want to bring my love of it to you. I wanted to create the perfect environment for you to feel comfortable to come in and get in shape! Plus, we have really increased our younger persons program with our starting age now at 13 years old, hoping to help to tackle the ever-growing problem of childhood obesity.
So, how should you go about your new plan? Well, first off speaking from loads of experience, choose the right place. Many a gym goer has been in the position of paying for a gym membership that they never use. You’re not alone. If you are new to exercise, it’s crucial that you get off on the right foot, it’s vital you get the help and advice on your very first visits. If you’re like me and sometimes have 45 minutes to work out, I want to maximise the results I get in that time, I don’t want to waste any bit of it. Secondly, don’t over commit. By this I mean it might be great to think you can get to the gym 5 times per week, but it might not be possible. To give you an idea, I train 4 times per week for around 45 minutes to an hour. Make your training timetable as realistic as possible, and if you achieve more then it’s a great bonus. Thirdly, do the right type of exercise. If you want to burn fat, don’t just stick to cardio exercises like running and cycling, add a really good weights program to your plan, and see the calories melt away! Finally, there will be offers and deals to entice you this new year, which is great but remember that a good offer is only as good as the value you get for it. Sometimes it’s worth paying a little more if there’s more value in it, plus by paying out your hardearned money you feel more of a commitment to see it through. I hope you have a very Happy New Year, and remember I’m always here for everybody for help and advice, just email me at simon@fitnessrepublic.co.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN
A gift to last Frequently when I am designing a garden for a client they will say that a particular plant has to be kept because it was a gift from someone special, or that it was chosen to celebrate an anniversary or occasion. There are hundreds of plants with a girl’s name. Just look up rose and then add a name such as Rose ‘Grace’ or ‘Charlotte’ to see if you are in luck. There are Clematis varieties which have girl’s names, such as Clematis ‘Rebecca’ or Clematis ‘Alita’. If flowers aren’t your thing, how about a lovely leafy Hosta, there is ‘Carol’ or ‘Catherine’. I was surprised to find Clematis ‘Mama Mia’ – ABBA fans will love it! There are famous males who have had plants named after them, such as the David Austin Rose called ‘Sir Walter Scott’ and ‘Charles Darwin’, ideal for the explorers amongst you. Similarly the author ’Roald Dahl’ has an exquisitely perfumed peachy coloured rose named after him. Surely such a gift would bring back happy childhood

memories of his wonderful books. On the writers theme, how about Rose ‘Bathsheba’ for the ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ fans, and ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ for Thomas Hardy enthusiasts. Perhaps a place could inspire your choice. There is Rosa ‘Lichfield Angel’ or ’Winchester Cathedral’ and ‘A Shropshire Lad’. Ramblers amongst you might like the idea of a Rose named ‘Malvern Hills or ‘The Albrighton Rambler’. Holiday destinations and fond memories may make a match with the Rose ‘Scarborough Fair’. ‘Chicago Sunrise’ and ‘California Sunshine’ are both varieties of Hemerocalis (Day Lillies). I have found a Lilly called ‘Snow Board’. Each summer the pure white petals of the flowers will be a nice reminder of ski slopes. As you can see there are many possibilities if you can spare time to research. To mark a wedding, Clematis ‘Beautiful Bride’ would I am sure be gratefully received. The Lilly which is rather sadly called ‘Broken Heart’ would possibly be less welcome. ‘Fond Memories’ or ‘For Your Eyes Only’ or ‘Freedom’ are just a few of the roses available from www.britishroses.com. Historians could possibly be found a rose to suit their interest; for example someone interested in Kings and Queens or Royal connections might opt for the David Austin Rose ‘Anne Boleyn’, or ‘Princess Anne’. I am hoping my friends will read this in time for my January birthday..... there is a yellow Rose called ‘Francesca’ for my garden!
Happy gardening!

BODY MATTERS
Sports massage There are many benefits to sports massage improved flexibility, reduced risk of injury, pain reduction and injury rehabilitation. Sports massage can be for everyone not just athletes. But there are several things to consider before your appointment: Pre-treatment Ask about the qualifications of your Sports Massage Therapist. How long they have been practicing? Have they completed a recognised course of training? Make sure you are well hydrated as your muscles and soft tissue respond better. Also don’t eat a heavy meal beforehand as this may be uncomfortable. Avoid vigorous sports massage prior to any strenuous exercise. Try to leave it 3-4 days as you may experience some muscle soreness immediately after a massage. The treatment Be prepared for postural assessment, moving around and also some homework! The homework is just as
important as the massage itself and the therapist will be able to tell if you have been a good student! Expect to feel some discomfort but you should never be in pain. After the treatment Expect some post massage soreness - this is normal. This will often persist for up to 48 hours and following this you should feel the difference. A warm bath is a good post management activity. If you feel you would benefit from a Sports Massage please call ProPhysio on 01530 588557 or visit the website for more information www. prophysiomidlands.co.uk Marie Kelleher VTCT Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
Greater resolve… once again! No doubt, by the time you read this I will already have broken at least one of my New Year’s resolutions. Some years I barely make it to day two. Sound familiar? It should - a quick Google search tells me that 80% of resolutions are broken during January and only 8% of resolutions are actually achieved long term. But is knowing this going to stop me making them again this year? Absolutely not. I’m going to set them anyway - as you never know, this could just be the year that I keep them… We’ve been thinking like this for thousands of years. The month January is named after a mythical god of early Rome called ‘Janus’. Janus is described as having two faces - one which looked forward and the other back. This way he was able to see both the past and the future at the same time. And so, for the Romans the last day in December became a time where people looked at their past, forgiving their enemies, and also a time where people looked to the future by setting themselves resolutions.

I guess this is similar to our thoughts this New Year - reflecting on the year just gone and thinking about an improved future. Unlike mythical Janus though, we have a very real, living God who has a clear plan for the world and for us. ‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.’ (Jeremiah 29:11) Unlike my failed plans and resolutions, we can have confidence in this and be assured that God has a future prepared. So, in addition to the usual resolutions, why not make 2018 the year to find out more about God’s plans and resolutions - and what they mean for you? MONEY MATTERS
Spring Clean
An early for your finances
I thought I would offer some thoughts on the things you should be doing as you recover from Christmas and before the new tax year begins even though we are few months away from April.
ISA’s
• It is an allowance which if not used each tax year is lost. (Currently £20,000) • You can mix up allowance between a Cash and Stocks & Shares ISA if that helps. • Remember you can convert Cash ISA’s into Stocks & Shares ISA’s or vice versa, as once transferred they retain their historical ISA status. • ISA’s are very useful products when investing for the short, medium and long term. • You can decide the risk structure for your investments.
GIFTING
• If you want to gift from your estate then you have multiple options. • You have a £3,000 ‘Gift Allowance’ each year, plus you can carry forward any unused annual gift allowance from the previous year, but only 1 years’ worth. • Gift £250 to anyone you like. • You also have marriage gift allowances.
PENSION SAVINGS
• Investing in a Pension plan benefits from tax relief at the rate you pay income tax. • There is a ceiling on how much you can invest each year as an individual, currently £40,000. • Yes you can, if available and appropriate, carry forward previous year’s unused relief – but it is wise to seek advice on how this is calculated first. • Even if you are someone who does not pay any tax you can invest up to £3,600 into a 50
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd pension and still benefit from tax relief – many of my clients do this for their children and grandchildren.
FINAL TIP - 2018 WISHES
• Have fun and create 2 or 3 wishes for 2018 – everyone tends to undertake resolutions and sadly fail – I recommend you create ideas on things you want to not what you should do. • Write them down on a card for example and display them, on the fridge door or somewhere prominent so they keep reminding you to make them happen. • Life is not a rehearsal. These are just a few tips or hints. We do suggest it may be wise you seek advice before undertaking any major steps with your finances. In a collection of recent reports it has shown that taking Independent Financial Advice potentially adds value to the decisions you make in the long term. It could help you plan and undertake the appropriate steps which are relevant to your circumstances and requirements. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and may not get back the full amount you invest. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Tax Treatment depends on your individual circumstances and are subject to change.
Do you use the ‘Fingers Crossed’ method when dreaming about how your financial future might look? Don’t worry - you’re not alone - millions do!
But in n the absence of a lottery win, it’’s a long shot. Fail to plan - plan to fail. If you wantt to make your hopes and dreams a reality, planning is the key Pro ophecy - is the answer.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

AMTG NEWS
Happy New Year from the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group! As we begin 2018 we would like to wish all our patrons, supporters and sponsors a very happy and prosperous New Year.
owing to legal issues in the United States regarding performing rights. Thankfully these issues have now been resolved, so we are thrilled to be bringing it to the local stage again and we expect a high demand for tickets.
Rehearsals are now well under way for our next production “My Fair Lady” to be presented at the 400 Hall Theatre at Repton School from the 10th to 14th April 2018. We last produced this show in 1998 and our supporters will recognise some faces in the cast from the production all those years ago! Just a few mind you! Leading our cast is Keith Reynolds, reprising his rôle of Professor Henry Higgins, and Eliza Doolittle is played to perfection by newcomer Laura Jones. This partnership is already proving very successful at rehearsals and causing great hilarity amongst the cast! The licence for My Fair Lady has been on hold

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020
PENSION FREEDOMS DON’T LOSE OUT! In the first major study to be conducted since the introduction of the new pension rules in 2015, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)* reviewed the actions taken by pensioners who chose not to receive advice when accessing their pension pots. They flagged up several areas of concern.
The report also found that in 52% of cases where pension pots had been fully withdrawn, the money hadn’t been spent but had been moved into other savings and investments. Research by Citizens Advice showed that, in such cases, one in three put their entire pension savings into a bank account.
COMMON MISTAKES The FCA found that many people simply took the pension income drawdown that was offered by their pension operator, perhaps without realising that they would have been well within their rights to shop around to see if there was a better deal available from an alternative provider. Before the introduction of the pension freedoms, 5% of drawdown plans were bought without seeking advice, but since the introduction of the new rules, this figure has risen to 30%. Drawdown can be complex in its operation, so taking advice that takes full account of a pensioner’s financial circumstances can help ensure that the right decisions about retirement income are taken. After all, retirement should be enjoyed and not endured; today’s pensioners can look forward to several decades in retirement and no-one wants to face the prospect of running out of money later in life.
Pensioners who took this course of action risked paying too much tax, losing out on the possible but not guaranteed investment growth they could have enjoyed if they had left the money invested in their pension fund, and in some instances lost other benefits too. MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Today, pensions offer flexibility. However, freedom of choice brings with it the responsibility of making the right decisions. So, if you’re approaching retirement and would like some advice or want to discuss any other financial needs, please contact Ian Staley, Financial Adviser at DGS Independent Financial Advisers Ltd on 01530 567020. The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. The past is not a guide to future performance and past performance may not necessarily be repeated

Moreover, we have offered this facility to all the other independent museums and heritage centres who are members of the County Forum. For the last few years the Museum has been actively involved in the latest digital developments. ON THE BEAT
What is Anti-Social Behaviour? Anti-Social behaviour is a wide range of unacceptable activity and includes things like vandalism, graffiti and fly-posting, nuisance neighbours and intimidating groups taking over public spaces. Anti-social behaviour can ruin lives and create an environment where more serious crime can take hold. Other examples include: • People dealing and buying drugs on the street. • People dumping rubbish and abandoned cars. • Begging and anti-social drinking. • The misuse of fireworks. • Reckless driving of mini-motorbikes. How to Report Anti-Social Behaviour If you want to report anti-social behaviour or a crime that is not an emergency, you should call Leicestershire Police or your council anti-social behaviour team. BOOK REVIEWS
Into the New Year
Books about awakenings and new beginnings to see you into 2018. The Power Naomi Alderman Not a new release this one, but well worth a read if you missed it back in 2016. Teenage girls across the world discover they have the power to hurt, and even kill, with just their bare hands. And they have the ability to awaken that same power in other women. Now that men are the weak ones, how will the gender balance shift? An engaging read that twists modern day happenings and examines the dark side of power. Gripping, thought-provoking and a real conversation starter, The Power is ideal for book clubs. How to be Champion: My Autobiography Sarah Millican Sarah Millican’s autobiography is like a glorious ramble through her life. The book is split into chapters with headers such as ‘Things I’ve Been Bullied For’, ‘Why I’m Not A Criminal’ and ‘My Love Of Stationery’. It’s part autobiography and part selfhelp guide. Nothing is off limits, so it’s probably not the book for you if you’re not keen on swear words or reading about bodily functions. However, if you want a book that’ll make you feel good about yourself and is snort-your-tea-out-of-your-nose-funny, buy it now. The Art of Hiding Amanda Prowse Nina seems to have the perfect life, but it soon starts to unravel when her husband is killed in a car crash. Left with two children to care for, a mountain of debt, and the growing realisation that her husband wasn’t all he seemed, Nina has to fight to rebuild a life for herself and her family. An enjoyable easy read – perfect for long winter’s nights.

History of Wolves Emily Fridlund 14 year old Linda lives in an ex-commune out in the woods. Lonely, socially-inexperienced and left to her own devices by her parents, Linda craves friends and a sense of belonging. When a new family moves nearby, she befriends the young mother and regularly babysits the four year old child. But she soon discovers that all is not right. The choices Linda has to make to keep her new found family could have tragic consequences. Compelling reading. Mrs Osmond John Banville Banville picks up the story of Isabel Osmond (née Archer) from where we left her in the classic The Portrait of a Lady. While this novel will likely appeal most to fans of Henry James’s work, Banville retells enough of the original story for Mrs Osmond to work as a stand-alone piece. Upon learning of her husband’s betrayal, Isabel has journeyed to London, leaving him behind in Italy. Away from her husband and reunited with her friends, Isabel starts to rediscover her desire for independence. Lively characters, elegant prose and engaging dialogue combine to make this a very enjoyable read. Me. You. A Diary Dawn French This book combines writing your own diary with taking a peek into Dawn French’s. She shares her thoughts each month, along with various insights into her life, and invites you to do the same. The idea is that, by the end of the year, you’ll have a ‘fatter, scruffier book that is written by me but totally personalised by you.’ With various writing prompts, this book makes keeping a diary altogether easier. The perfect start to the new year.

PET’S CORNER
Dealing with Cat Flu –
It’s Not Just a Winter Bug
Cat flu is potentially one of the most serious illnesses your cat can suffer and in some cases is life-threatening. Kittens in particular are at high risk, so it’s important to vaccinate as soon as possible, usually at nine weeks and then on an annual basis. It’s not only a ‘winter bug’ as human flu tends to be – it can be transferred between cats at any time of the year. This is why, if your cat stays in a boarding cattery, you should make sure it’s one that only accepts cats from owners with proof of vaccination. What symptoms should you watch out for? Common symptoms of cat flu include: • Sneezing • Coughing • Runny nose • Sore or partially-closed eyes • Dribbling • High temperature • General lethargy • Loss of appetite Helping your cat through this serious illness The vet may prescribe antibiotics if your cat

has a secondary bacterial infection, which is a common occurrence with cat flu. Apart from that, however, wiping the cat’s eyes and nose with a warm clean cloth soaked in salt water can help. Regularly washing their bedding, and making sure water bowls are cleaned several times a day with hot water, also helps to prevent re-infection once your cat begins to improve. Cats with flu often lose their appetite, so having plenty of nice food to tempt them to eat is a good idea and also helps to build up their immune system after they’ve recovered.
Andrew Johnson Joins Howkins & Harrison After ten years of providing exceptional service and support to the people of Ashby de la Zouch and surrounding area, Andrew Johnson & Company are delighted to have merged with Howkins & Harrison - a firm of Estate Agents, Chartered Surveyors and Auctioneers.

They offer the complete package of property, land and estate services to residential, commercial and rural clients. Robert Eaton-Jones (Managing Partner of Howkins and Harrison) said “we have been seeking to strengthen our presence in Ashby de la Zouch for some time and what better way to do it than merge with Ashby’s market leading estate agent, Andrew Johnson & Company”. Andrew Johnson will continue to spearhead the Ashby office and his team will continue to provide the high levels of personal, local service that they are proud of and renowned for. Andrew is confident that the move will only strengthen their high service standards saying “Howkins & Harrison have a long established office presence that we can use to the advantage of our customers, offering a far wider coverage than we have been able to do in the past. I believe this is a very positive step for us and our customers”. The merger is being celebrated by this local firm.

CHESS PUZZLE
Pau aul ul Mor Moorphy r hy, y chess genius
Paul Charles Morphy ( 22 June 1837 to 10 July 1884) was born in New Orleans into a chess-playing family. He started the game at 10 and by 21 he was the unofficial world chess champion.
The position shown is from Louis Paulsen v. Paul Morphy, New York, 1857. It’s Black to move and win, in spectacular fashion. If you can solve it, surely you’re a chess gladiator and should be fighting in battles and tournaments! Join your local club. It meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 116 - should you need it!
