Ashby Life Ltd

November issue Thursday 12th Oct

Welcome to October’s issue. We are now well and truly into Autumn and all the fun that comes with it; finding conkers, kicking fallen leaves and of course Halloween. As always there are loads of events happening in and around Ashby this month (see our What’s On pages and Community Board) but on pages 12 and 13 we also have our pick of local Halloween family fun including spooky walks in the woods, carving pumpkins or even broomstick training!

We also have a brand new regular feature from St Helen’s Heritage Centre who are now up and running and have lots of special events coming up. Look out for more news from them each month.

Ashby’s FABulous

It’s not long now till the big day when Ashby’s FABulous returns once again. Do you have Saturday 7th October in your diary? Here’s a roundup of what to expect, and when, from shop windows featuring 1920s dressed live models to street performances to get you in the ‘swing’ of things.

Live windows 10.30am till 12pm Jaks 1920s dance outside Boots 2.05pm - 12.25pm Swing band 12.30pm - 1pm Stagecoach 1920 dance 1.05pm - 1.25pm Live windows 1.30pm till 3pm The treasure hunt will be running until 3pm There will also be 20s music playing throughout the day. Make sure you head on down and enjoy all that’s going on!

Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Seborrhoeic Keratosis

These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells. Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several centimetres across and sometimes they can become sore or itchy. On dark skinned people, the same growths can form in clusters or chains in which case they are called Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra.

Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make-up is rarely successful. At one time they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosmetic issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves little or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and soft.

Work is progressing well on my new premised in Harby, near Melton Mowbray and I hope to be taking appointments from the end of September. Please use my mobile number or email to contact me and check the website for updates. Many thanks. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

IN THIS WORLD, NOTHING IS CERTAIN BUT DEATH AND TAXES

In this first of a two-part article on estate planning we will take a brief look at some of the main allowances and techniques used to reduce inheritance tax, or ‘IHT’. In a short article, we can only briefly touch on each issue and with each there are many intricacies to be considered. Only individual advice can establish if something is appropriate to you. Inheritance tax is a one-off tax paid on the value of an estate (i.e. your assets) over £325,000, the current ‘nil-rate band’. The Net estate, after deducting exemptions, reliefs and nil-rate band is taxed at 40% (or 36%, if 10% or more of your net estate is left to charity). 1. Residential nil-rate band – available when a residence is passed on death to direct descendants i.e. a child (including a step-child, adopted or foster child) of the deceased and their lineal descendants. Buy to-Lets do not qualify. This is currently £100,000 increasing to £175,000 by 2021. On estates over £2 million there is a taper to reduce this allowance. 2. Inherited Allowances – the unused balance of either of the above ‘bands’ can be passed to a spouse. On the second death of a couple the total allowance will be £1 million (by 2021).

16

3. Gifts – you may not have to pay IHT on your assets if you give them away. Certain gifts are IHT free; gifting excess income being one of the lesser known IHT free areas. Generally, larger gifts are known as‘potentially exempt transfers’and the better known‘7-year rule’applies to these. 4. Reliefs – there are number of reliefs and allowances that apply to businesses (you own, or have shares in) and Business Property Relief (BPR) is an area commonly used by clients when putting together an IHT strategy. Other reliefs can apply to specialist assets e.g. Agricultural Property Relief, Woodland Relief, and Heritage assets. Specialist advice is necessary if planning is undertaken in these areas. In our next article, we will look at the more commonly used strategies of Trusts, Pensions and Life Assurance, and the role they can play in reducing IHT. If you would like to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss your estate planning or to look at any other financial needs, please contact Ian Staley Financial Planner at DGS Independent Financial Planners Limited on 01530 567020.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Our Philosophy… I truly believe that fitness is for everybody. As I have talked about before, I personally started training at an early age and it was one of the best things I ever did. You don’t have to be an elite sports athlete - I’m not! You don’t have to have the physique of a Greek god - I don’t! You don’t have to live up to anybody’s standards except your own. That’s one of the philosophies of Fitness Republic. We want you to be the best you can be in your own skin. Everybody has a different genetic makeup and there are many body types, but what is important is you and your body. Family is also really important to us here at Fitness Republic. I started the club with my wife almost 8 years ago, and we had a 2 year old little girl with another on the way. I try to encourage them (now 7 & 8) to come in the gym and just be within the environment so hopefully in the years to come they will develop the fitness bug like I did. Although we regularly have Kids Zumba classes in the holidays, this summer saw the start of our Fit Kids Club. Each week we had 4½ hours of exercise, learning and craft for 5-12 year olds. It was a great success and so fantastic to see kids excited about and enjoying exercise whilst learning about nutrition too.

old at Fitness Republic, all the way up to any age – we have members 70 years plus! We offer unique family memberships to encourage this too. This ties in with another great philosophy of ours that health and fitness should not only be fun but also very social. I have personally made lots of friends at Fitness Republic and love chatting and laughing with everyone in the club. Today, there are many places to train and ways to keep fit, which is great as it’s becoming more and more important for us to stay healthy. However, at Fitness Republic we are deeply committed to helping you exercise correctly and safely, as we only have the best instructor team who are dedicated to help you be the very best you can, in an environment that you feel totally at home, confident and at ease. And now we are striving to give you even more, by extending our venue, improving our facilities, and creating the most professional fitness and wellbeing club dedicated to you and your goals. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved here, so let us help you to be proud of what you can achieve too!

You can actually start training from 13 years

PARENTING

Helping children to

deal with big emotions

It can be bewildering when your child has a meltdown, as the reason for it often seems pretty minor. However, while children may think they’re upset because their sibling got an extra sweet or because they want to carry on watching TV, there’s often an underlying issue. Tiredness, hunger and sugar crashes can all make children over-emotional. Of course, children often won’t realise why they’re feeling like they do and may be very quick to tell you that no they’re not hungry, they’re cross because you’re just being SO UNFAIR. Children also often store up any anxieties and let them loose in a safe place, i.e. at home. An argument with a friend at school, for instance, can result in a shouting match over switching the TV off at home. Or, if your child is worried that you might love their siblings more than you love them, a perceived unfairness can be a trigger to letting that worry come out. A worry box can be a useful tool for discovering any underlying anxieties that may be bothering your child. Help them to decorate a cardboard box and write ‘Our worry box’ on the side. Encourage your child to write down when something is worrying them, and to pop it in the box. If they’re too young to write their worry down, they could draw it or ask you to write it for them. Just the act of getting it down on paper can sometimes help children to work through the issue. Pick a quiet time, when your child seems at ease, to take out a piece of paper and discuss the worry. If your child is still feeling anxious about the issue, they can put it back in the box. Otherwise they can throw it away. Coping with a meltdown A meltdown is usually fast and furious, but short

lived. Speaking in a low, soothing voice can help children to calm down. Just repeating that they’re OK and that you’re here can be all that’s needed. Keeping calm when you’re being screamed at is certainly difficult, but reciprocating will just escalate the situation. If you need to walk away and take a few minutes to breathe deeply, then do so. Young children aren’t always capable of logic, so attempting to reason with them often won’t help. Likewise, telling them to calm down, to stop crying, or to ‘suck it up’ will just make things worse. While giving in to your child’s demands can sometimes diffuse the situation, it won’t uncover any underlying causes for the meltdown and can make things worse in the long run. That being said, it’s always a good idea to properly consider their request before a situation escalates. It’s often very easy to say ‘no’ without actually considering whether there’s room to meet halfway. Once your child has calmed down, you might want to sit with them while they eat a non-sugary snack. Big emotions can be scary and tiring for children. It will take years for them to develop the mental capacity to be able to properly control their emotions, so don’t try to make them feel guilty about losing control. Instead, ask whether they want to talk about what just happened and about how they’re feeling. A hug can go a long way towards making both of you feel better too. By Kate Duggan

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

October Museum News The Museum is looking for groups or individuals to mount temporary exhibitions in the Loudoun Gallery next year. Normally these last for two months and can be on any topic. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested. In the past we have had good displays from the Scouts and Guides, church groups, a local photographer and the hockey club. The Museum has just acquired equipment capable of digitising glass plate negatives and acetate negatives, up to maximum 10” x 8” in size (approx. 24.5 x 20.3cm). Our Archival Department is happy for you to bring in any glass plate negatives or acetate negatives you may have which refer to Ashby’s history and could be of interest to the town and its people. We would then scan them and give you a digital copy. In return we will retain a copy for our archives. Who knows what hidden gems may lurk in your attic or at the back of a drawer. There will be a Kids’ Club on Saturday 7th October. If you require more information please follow us on social media.

MONEY MATTERS

Should I transfer my Final Salary Pension –

Yes or No?

In recent years, I have been asked this question quite often. When I come to answer it, you might think that I sound like a politician being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman – anything but a straight answer! However, being brutally honest, your circumstances are unique so a straight ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ is an unqualified flip of a coin. Giving up a very valuable guaranteed income for a seemingly generous cash lump sum is a big step, so my qualified position always starts from a “No” unless together, we can prove saying ‘Yes’ is more beneficial to you now and for the long term. So, what is a final salary pension? It is one which pays a retirement income based on a percentage of your final salary and length of service either at retirement, or at the date of leaving the company or the scheme closing (which is a common situation today). These pensions tend to offer inflation protection so you don’t lose out if you decide not to take your pension straightaway, plus dependent benefits. You will have many reasons you are now, quite rightly, considering your long term retirement strategy. For instance: The Chancellor’s introduction of ‘Pension Freedom’ in March 2014; very low interest rates increasing the transfer values; employers moving away from Final Salary schemes and understandable concern about high profile pension schemes been in deficit like BHS and Tata Steel reported earlier this year. It is very easy to accept a seemingly high cash transfer value offer. They have primarily risen due to falling interest rates and lower returns on government bonds, and when interest rates fall in this way, it becomes more expensive for companies to pay pensioners their incomes. BUT is it right for you? Your situation is unique, so you need advice based on your circumstances. It is vital to conduct a variety of stress tests. Look at various “what if” scenarios. Include all your other long term savings and assets, then establish what your best choice is for the future. Why? Because if you take the cash option, you

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd cannot put the ‘genie back in the bottle’ - it cannot be reversed, so you need to know the facts unique to your situation and this could involve seemingly unconnected issues such as your state of health, tax implications, family and life aspirations. When taking expert financial advice it is become common place for a two stage process to be considered. Stage 1 – pay a fee for an Independent Financial Advisor (IFA) to assess your occupational scheme, complete the research and stress testing, consider the ‘what ifs’, considering your unique circumstances and objectives. If the answer is NO, retain the valuable benefits of your scheme. If the recommendation is YES, a further fee is charged to implement advice and transfer out of the scheme into a personal arrangement. Not all financial advisers can offer this type of advice. ON THE BEAT What is knife crime?

Knife crime includes: - carrying a knife - trying to buy a knife if you are under 18 threatening someone with a knife • owning a banned knife - injuring or fatally wounding somebody with a knife - intent to injure or harm somebody with a knife - a robbery or burglary where a knife was carried as a weapon

What’s the law?

Setting aside the damage inflicted by a knife on a life, the potential legal consequences for those who carry, and use a knife in acts of violence, are severe. For simply carrying a knife in a public place the maximum penalty if convicted is four years in prison. For offences when a knife is used on another person or in the commission of a crime, the punishments become even more life-changing. Offenders can be charged with a range of offences, from assault to Causing Grievous Bodily Harm with

intent, from attempted murder to manslaughter and ultimately murder. Such offences can lead to many years in prison. If someone is injured or killed by a knife while you are present you too could be prosecuted.

What is Leicestershire Police doing to tackle knife crime? We’ve launched our “Lives Not Knives” campaign to drive home the message of the devastating consequences knife crime can have and what could happen if you are caught carrying a weapon. The campaign will involve a knife amnesty with a series of amnesty bins being placed in six police stations for people to dispose of bladed weapons anonymously. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BODY MATTERS

Don’t be S.A.D.

Autumn approaches and as the dark nights begin to close in those that suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, will notice a gradual return of their symptoms.

SAD is a form of depression, winter depression to be more specific. The symptoms of SAD are the same as depression. Clients report a low mood along with a general reluctance to take part in activities, an increase in appetite and difficulty with getting up in the morning. SAD has a real physiological basis. Due to the lack of daylight in winter, changes occur in the level of production of the hormones melatonin and serotonin and there are also changes to the internal body clock. So, what can you do if you suffer from SAD, or if you simply wish to feel better during the dark winter months? Stay active if at all possible; a walk during daylight hours can dramatically improve your mood. Try to reduce stress, take up a new hobby

to keep your mind active. Light therapy can also help to regulate your hormones and therefore your mood. If you are having difficulty with coping with SAD, or if you feel that there may be other issues that you would like to discuss, then please call me: Marion McGeough (Dip Hyp CS/dip PC) on 07551 846 468 or, to book an appointment, call Pro Physio on 01530 588 557. SPOTLIGHT ON...

Spotlight on

Ashby Relief in Sickness Fund

Each month we take a look at a local charity and the work they do in our community as well as how we can offer them support. This month our chosen charity is well and truly local and this time we’re taking a look at how they could help you…. Let’s start with a bit of background; The Ashby Relief in Sickness Fund came into being when a house near Ashby Hospital was sold in the 1970s and the money put into a trust fund. Previously, the house had been used to provide accommodation for the District Nurses in the days prior to the introduction of the NHS. Originally, the land for the house had been given by the Trustees of Ashby Hospital and the house built with money that had been donated by members of the public.

Because of this, it seemed only right that the money from the sale of the house should be used for the benefit of the residents who lived in the area where the original money had been collected i.e. Ashby and Blackfordby. To this day the Fund is used to provide help to those who may be struggling financially as a

58

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

result of sickness, disability or infirmity. “Sickness” includes both physical and psychological illnesses.

The money from the sale of the house has been invested and the interest on these investments is allocated to those who apply for help. The Fund is overseen by trustees who are drawn from medical, religious, civic and legal backgrounds and on average they are able to offer around five grants of £200 to £250 each year. Recent examples include providing money to help with hospital visiting costs and the cost of respite care. Other examples have been to give money for a new battery for an electric buggy and financial assistance towards electric equipment to help a stroke patient.

If you live in Ashby or Blackfordby and you, or a member of your household, is ill and money is tight, then the Ashby Relief in Sickness Fund may be able to help you. If you would like to enquire or simply find out more details then phone 01530 414 111 and ask to speak to Leanne Cooper, who is the Clerk to the Fund.

HERITAGE CENTRE

All change at St. Helens This summer the annual award of ‘Funniest Joke Of The Fringe’ at the Edinburgh Festival was won by: “I’m not a fan of the new pound coin, but then again, I hate all change.” We all know how difficult change can be. But recently, here at St Helen’s, we have been embracing all sorts of change. One of the biggest changes is our wonderful new building, The St Helen’s Community Heritage Centre, resplendent and ready to go as an amenity for the community and the church. It is already attracting ‘hirers’, regular and one-off, and we’re happy to show people around - we love showing it off! Any new building brings change and we’re busy learning about the intricacies of an electronic key system, an industrial dishwasher, a self-locking freezer, heating controls and lighting dimmers and sound systems and ... Of course, it has brought new opportunities for us as a congregation too. We now offer a ‘Brunch on Sunday’ before our All-Age Worship – and who can resist change if it involves a bacon sandwich and a cup of good coffee? We also do Soul Food: If you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s and would relish being cooked for one evening a month, with the opportunity to meet with others in the same ‘tribe’, then it’s for you. So bring it on. We’re discovering we like change. Another Edinburgh Fringe finalist acknowledged the positive benefits of change too, asking, “I wonder how many chameleons snuck onto the Ark?” Open Mornings St Helen’s Community Heritage Centre will be open for visits by members of the community on the morning of Saturday October 7th, and then every Wednesday 10am - 4pm, Saturday morning 10am to 12pm and Sunday afternoon 2pm to 4pm. Heritage Talks at St Helen’s Community Heritage Centre There has been a tradition of lectures at St Helen’s Church since at least the 16th century. The last regular lectures to be held in the church were the Ashe Lectures, which brought many well-known faces to the church in the 20th century: Lord Fisher of Lambeth, the Rt Revd Dr George Carey

62

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

(then Archbishop of Canterbury) and the Rt Revd David Jenkins (Bishop of Durham) to name but a few. These lectures date back to 1654, when Francis Ashe, a wealthy merchant and a citizen of London, decided to repay his own success in life by giving a gift of £20 per annum to provide in the Parish Church a weekly lecture by a “godly, orthodox and ordained minister.” The lectures became annual events, the last of which was in 2003. St Helen’s has recently been developing its heritage activities with the help of a substantial Heritage Lottery Fund grant. As part of the Heritage-related activities offered here, we are re-introducing a lecture series, a regular series of talks about subjects related to the church and its past. All talks will begin at 7.30pm in the Hastings Room in the Community Heritage Centre. £3 entry includes light refreshments. The first talk will take place on Monday 2nd October and Margaret King tells the story of Ithiel Smart 1598-1661, one time vicar of Ashby. He was described as “A famous Divine and a painful preacher.” For more details visit www.sthelensheritage.co.uk

N W L D C Area Co-ordinator If you’ve been to Ashby Library recently you may well have met Andrew Barson, a new source of support for the local community. Andy is a Local Area Co-ordinator for North West Leicestershire and in particular; the Ashby de la Zouch town area. Andy works for Leicestershire County Council and his role sits within the Public Health department, but his work covers many different and varying aspects of life within our local area. ‘Community’ is the key word Andrew uses to describe what he does. Andy can simply be a source of information, or he can support you to find the right people and get the right help from local services or groups that you need. Alternatively, he can offer residents in the Ashby de la Zouch town area both short term and

long term support, working with individuals on a oneto-one basis offering guidance, creating essential links and identifying relevant opportunities. This is primarily intended to help those in the community who may be at risk or are struggling to cope with daily life due to their situation or current issues. If you or someone you know may benefit from meeting Andrew then you can give him a call on 07712 324 253 or drop him an email at andrew. barson@leics.gov.uk. IN YOUR GARDEN

Community garden Locally there are several garden projects involving volunteers and charities. At the top of Market Street the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch are making a splendid job of refurbishing a patch of garden. They have made gravel and terraced framework for plants. On the opposite side just across from the Rotary project, the ladies of the WI have been maintaining the planting areas by the seating. However, let me tell you about a bigger scale project that our local Ibstock neighbours have been working on. The Ibstock Community Garden was set up in 2011. Land was restored which had been derelict for over 20 years. A new productive garden was made where people of all ages could come and grow food together. The main growing space was cleverly set out in a concentric circle design with 48 plots of various sizes. Groups or individuals could take on a free plot to grow food or herbs for themselves or the community. Presently there are 4 plots available for any willing volunteers. The garden has an outer ring of espalier pear trees neatly tied and pruned which produced a bumper autumn harvest. There is an apple orchard too and of course a large composting area. There is a blue painted cart which is used as a raised planting bed that

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 is accessible for wheelchair users. Surprisingly there is an amusing duo of old rowing boats which have been cleverly utilised as feature planting beds too. The poly tunnel, for the growing and over wintering of tender plants, has been recently refurbished. In the heart of a busy residential and working centre, there is now a quiet oasis which requires continued support and use. Community tea and cake sales together with the opportunity to buy the local grown produce puts funds back in to the garden. As an extension of this community garden the most recent scheme has been the under 5’s play area. Here Ibstock in Bloom planted impressive perennial and grass beds and the students of the Community College made a large piece of outside art, proudly displayed on the wall. Ibstock has a third community space which is earmarked as an outdoor recreation place for older children. It will hopefully be developed when local council funds and details are decided. More information is available at www.e-voice.org.uk/ ibstock-garden All community gardens are an illustration of local individuals who work hard to support these projects with other bodies such as charities schools and councils. See this month’s Ibstock Surgery News for details of their efforts.

Advertorial

Tip Top Hair Design paid for the expenses, helped me find a model and guided me around London. She was my rock.

My name is Ruth Geary, a married mother of 3 beautiful girls. I’ve been a Hairdresser and Barber for 14 years and currently working at Tip Top Hair Design at Staunton Harold. I have always had a love for barbering, I love the clean lines, textures, and the complexity that comes with it. My work has recently been published in an industry magazine. A while ago I saw an advert for a competition called Barber International 2017. Applicants needed to send in recent examples of their work and an accompanying cover letter, describing themselves and why they should be chosen. I decided I’d give it a go for the experience yet fully anticipating not to be chosen. 1000’s of applicants applied from many countries. It was a big deal and an amazing opportunity to have your work seen within the industry. A month or so passed and I had totally forgot I had entered. Then I received an email saying I had been chosen as one of 4 to represent England. Another 4 in Scotland too but I was the only girl. I was over the moon, still now I cannot believe I was chosen, my love for my craft had finally paid off, I had been noticed.

We managed to see a few sights around London too. We made our way to Clapham for the competition, I was very aware that I was the only girl, I felt nervous because I don’t look like the other barbers. We met everyone and they were all so down to earth and lovely. The competition started and my heart sank, I was so nervous. I decided I wasn’t going to let it get the better of me and pretended it was just another day in the salon. I did my very best and was happy with my finished model. We had photos and interviews afterwards. When we left I could have cried. I was so proud of myself, I had fought many fears, worked hard, I was professional and I actually had fun! We then made our way home to await the results. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to Germany. But do you know what, that’s ok. To me I had already won before I went to London. I had been chosen, me! And I was the only girl!! I have taken so much away with me from the experience, I’ve learnt that regardless of what you look like- you CAN do it. I’ve learnt that I can step out my comfort zone and if I really want something I can achieve it. If I had listened to the negative me I wouldn’t have applied. But I’m so glad I did. Without the help and support from my amazing boss I wouldn’t be where I am today. Every day I love going to work, and I think everybody should feel the same. Life is too short to work somewhere and be miserable just because it pays the bills. We only live once. If you think you can’t do something, try anyway, you might surprise yourself!

The qualifying round was to be held in London, and whoever made it through that round went to the final in Germany. I was very nervous, I had never been to London, never been on a train, underground etc. I have spent my life within a small mile radius of Ashby de la Zouch which I adore, I was brought up here and I love country life. I told my boss straight away as not only is she my boss but one of my best friends. I knew I couldn’t go without her. She as always was incredibly supportive,

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Exploring 1

Beacon on Hil Hiillll

TThis walk is a little further out than usual u but well worth the trip. Beaco on Hill Country Park is a beautiful spot H and a there is lots to see and do on this t walk making it ideal for a family trip out. En route you can spot the chainsaw carvings, explore the spooky rhododendron labyrinth and look out rhodod o for the alpacas, cattle and sheep which graze the c hillside. The paths h are all good but be prepared for a bit of a climb - the views make it well worth the effort v though. There is a charge for the car park which ha works on a ticket system with a machine to pay before leaving. It cost me ÂŁ3 for 2 hours parking - the walk takes a little under 90 minutes but you may well want to stay longer. There are ar plenty of good places to enjoy a picnic. Beacon Hill Country Park is close e to Woodhouse Eaves, just outside Loughborough h. Our walk starts from the Upper Car Park (1) which is accessed from Beacon Road. For Sat Nav users, the postcode is LE12 8SP. Leave the car park via the wide hard path that curves up the hillside taking you to the right of the beacon (2). You will soon arrive at a wooden barrier with w a carving of a shepherd beside it. Turn left here and then follow the path through a small metal al gate onto the hillside. Leaving the gravel path bear right up r the grass to visit the trig point at the summit of the m hill (3) and enjoy the far reaching views. s Bear left to rejoin the gravel path and then stay a on this path as it takes you around the hillside. You Yo will pass a sign telling you about the geologyy of the area and then, as you drop back downhill,l, a wonderful carving of a face. After a while a second small metal gate will take you off the hillside and an into a flatter, more wooded area.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

All change at Venture Theatre! Over the next few months the Ashby Dramatic Society are having a change of image! Not only to modernise the overall look of the Venture Theatre and the Society but to tie this in with the changes happening in Ashby as a whole.

again, or it’s always been something you’ve really wanted to do, then come on down to our club nights and introduce yourself. We go to the theatre every Monday after 8pm for an informal get together and always welcome new potential members.

With this will be a brand new logo, signage, website and we’re even reupholstering the seats! We’ve decided to do this not only because it does desperately need updating, but also to encourage a younger crowd to attend the performances. We want to shout out that there is a theatre in Ashby and it’s open to everyone! We’re hoping the revamp of our image will provide us with this – so watch this space!

Whether you’re 16 or 99 you will always receive a warm welcome. Not only do we put on several productions throughout the year (We’re in the midst of our last minute production of ‘Journey’s End’ right now) but we also host acting workshops and Jazz nights and are looking to do more and different things in the future.

We’re also always on the lookout for new and local talent, so if you’re thinking of taking up acting

BEAUTY TIPS

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in the UK. Thankfully, it’s also one of the most treatable, with 87% of women now surviving for at least five years after diagnosis. The earlier you catch it, the more treatable it is. So put down this magazine and cop a feel! It’s best to check your breasts and armpits regularly for any changes. You’re not just looking for lumps – other symptoms include discharge, pain and a change in appearance, such as dimpled skin. Most changes turn out to be nothing, but do book yourself in for a check-up if you find anything, just to be sure.

And now on to the fun stuff… From mugs to mints, there are loads of charity products out for Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. Do read the pack to see how much is being donated though, as in some cases it’s less than 5%. Neal’s Yard Remedies is donating £1 for every Organic Roll on Deodorant (£8) bought in October. Rich in skin-loving essential oils and natural ingredients, the deodorants are very refreshing, smell divine and protect from odour for up to 24 hours. Donations are going to The Haven, a national charity offering support to people affected by breast cancer. Elemis is a long-term supporter of breast cancer charities. This year the beauty brand has released a limited edition Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. The cream has won numerous awards and has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and leave skin feeling firmer. It’s one of Elemis’s bestselling products – one Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is sold every nine seconds! The limited edition jar is being sold for £99. While the price seems steep, the normal 100ml jar is £140, so you’ll save £41, as well as helping to support Breast Cancer Care. Elemis has pledged to donate £25,000 from sales. 86

How do I CHECK my breasts?

Check all parts of your breast, your armpits and up to your collarbone for changes.

A change in size or shape

Redness or a rash on the skin and/or around the nipple

Discharge (liquid) that comes from the nipple without squeezing

A lump or thickening that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue

A change in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling (like orange skin)

Your nipple becoming inverted (pulled in) or changing its position or shape

A swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone

Constant pain in your breast or your armpit

In the market for some new hair styling products? Heated styling company ghd has raised more than £10 million for breast cancer charities over the last 13 years. This year they’ve launched the ghd Pink Blush Collection. The range includes a limited edition Platinum Styler (£165), Air Hairdryer (£99) and Paddle Brush (£20), with £2 to £10 being donated to Breast Cancer Now from each sale. Estée Lauder has been supporting breast cancer charities for several years, raising more than $65 million globally. Several of the Estee Lauder companies are releasing limited edition products in support of breast cancer research this year, including Bobbi Brown. The Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set includes a flattering pink cheek powder and a mini face brush. The set costs £35, with 20% of the sale price going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Jo Malone London is donating £5 from the sale of every Red Roses 100ml Cologne (£88) sold throughout the month of October. Beloved by celebs such as Sophie Dahl, Red Roses is inspired by seven different roses and has notes of violet, citrus and honey. It’s a lovely fresh fragrance and really conjures up images of summer evenings in the garden. By Kate Duggan

YOUR WELLBEING

Shining the Spotlight on Mindfulness How many times have you asked your mind to do something and uninvitedly your mind does something else? Or felt overwhelmed by the amount of thoughts flitting through your mind, to then follow this alternative train of thought, taking you further away from the present moment and perhaps reality. When the demands of life take over, multi-tasking is considered important. But during the rush to complete necessary tasks, you may find yourself losing connection with what’s happening now and how you’re feeling. Our minds can become habitually distracted and those thoughts can be difficult to silence. Mindfulness is the deliberate act of bringing our attention to the present moment as it happens, free from judgement. With practice we can become aware of the uncontrolled ‘traffic’ of thoughts and guide them consciously, zooming in and out of things we choose to focus on. Mindfulness allows you to anticipate the inevitable coming and going of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, etc. so they can pass by without keeping hold of them. It serves as space between strong emotions/ thoughts and actions allowing us more time to react and/or make better decisions. Being mindful helps us

to savour the pleasures in life, being fully present and engaged. Mindfulness practice incorporates a range of techniques from many successful and effective therapies. The benefits can include: • Stress Reduction • Improved Concentration • Improvement in Working Memory • Less Emotional Reactivity • Increased relationship satisfaction Futureminds are now offering Mindfulness Practice either individually or as part of a group. For details please email us on info@futureminds.co.uk.

Grab a tree for free 2017 in the National Forest and beyond

Could you help brighten up your garden, street and district by planting a free tree this year? North West Leicestershire District Council is once again working in partnership with the National Forest Company and HK Wentworth to off ffer f the Free Tree Scheme in an eff ffort f to make our district even greener. Residents of North West Leicestershire can choose two trees from four varieties and can also apply to the “Hedge Fund to order up to 30 metres of hedging.

Holly (ilex aquifolium)

The common holly grows as a shrub or tree and has bright red berries and shiny leaves. The leaves are spiny and have a waxy texture. Holly is evergreen and will grow almost anywhere, including in difficult conditions such as waterlogged or chalky ground. In autumn, leaves turn a rich red colour.

Cherry Plum (prunus cerasifera)

Masses of pure white flowers smother the branches in early March before the leaves appear. This is followed in autumn by tasty red or yellow, spherical cherry plums that grown on mature plants. The cherry plum is a popular ornamental tree for garden and landscaping use.

Hazel (corylus avellana)

One of the smallest native tree species, hazel grows more like a shrub than a tree, only reaching approximately 20 feet in height when mature. Its leaves are comparatively large and round with a distinctive point. The leaves are slightly hairy to the touch and have a wrinkled appearance when fully out.

Whitebeam (sorbus aria)

Is a medium-sized deciduous tree, rather upright when young, with dark green leaves, white-felted beneath, and clusters of white flowers in spring, followed by red berries in early autumn.

The Hedge Fund this year is Hawthorn and Hazel mix with a Whitebeam at 10 metre intervals Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

A fast growing, deciduous hedging plant. It heralds the arrival of spring, has an abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom and it develops glossy red haws in autumn. It grows to 15 metres but it can be trimmed after flowering or in the autumn to keep it smaller.

You can order online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/freetreescheme2017. The deadline for applications is 27 October. Trees will be available for collection on Sunday 19 November 2017.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Crazy Times – Crazy People! What goes on in the world never ceases to amaze, shock and sometimes scare me. Donald Trump becoming the president certainly raised eyebrows last November, yet he continues to keep everyone on their toes with what he might do next. His latest spat with Kim Jong-un doesn’t fill you with any greater confidence. North Korea threatening “pain and suffering” and Trump responding with “fire and fury like the world has never seen” makes us all hope no one gets trigger-happy with nuclear weapons any time soon. Sadly human nature never changes. We’ve seen centuries of egotistical power-hungry world leaders who want to make their mark on history. The fact is ‘man’s inhumanity to man’ has only one real solution. The Bible tells us in Psalm 146 v3-5, “Don’t put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there. When they breathe their last, they return to the earth, and all their plans die with them. But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their

100

helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” While world powers think they put themselves in charge the Bible tells us otherwise. Daniel 4 v17 says “…that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world. He gives them to anyone he chooses - even to the lowliest of people.” You can really start to see this in the world today! So as each world leader comes and goes, scrapping for power and popularity, it becomes more and more obvious we should be putting our hope and trust in God, not them. To find out what the Bible says about our past, present and future, why not come along at 10am any Sunday morning. Discover awesome plans for a peaceful future – plans based on more than missilefiring and name-calling! BOOK REVIEWS

Autumn Entertainment From new releases to true classics, there’s plenty to keep you entertained from our choice of books this month.

How to Stop Time Matt Haig Tom Hazard looks like he’s 40, but he’s been alive for centuries. People notice when you age so slowly, so Tom has to change his identity every eight years – a new name, new job, new friends. Falling in love isn’t an option and it’s best not to get too attached to anyone, as they’ll only die. But Tom craves an ordinary life. Beautifully written, this book is begging to be devoured in one sitting. Home Fire Kamila Shamsie After years of raising her younger siblings, Isma is free to live her own life and to start a career in America. Back in the UK, her sister, Aneeka, is struggling in a society that sees her hijab as a threat. Enter Eamonn, the son of a well-known London politician, who will have a lasting effect on both women. This reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone covers some pretty big issues, from religion, politics and extremism to love and family ties. However, Shamsie’s skilful writing means the themes never suffocate the story. A powerful book. Entrepreneurial You Dorie Clark If you’re fed up of the daily grind and fancy setting up on your own, this book might prove a good starting point. The tagline is a good indication of the content – ‘Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive’. Clark offers advice on choosing what to do, building your brand and finding people to buy from you. There are plenty of case studies to be inspired by and, unlike many other business books, it’s not too heavy a read.

Extracted Trilogy RR Haywood Harry Madden died after blowing up a German base in WW2. Safa Patel saved the prime minister, before being killed by terrorists. Ben Ryder was hit by a train while trying to stop armed men blowing up an underground station. Now these three heroes find themselves ‘extracted’ from their untimely deaths, by a man with a time-machine who wants them to save the world. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with a tightly-written plot, great characters and plenty of action. The Break Marian Keyes Bestselling author Marian Keyes’ latest book centres around forty-something Amy, whose husband Hugh has decided he wants a break. It’s not that he doesn’t love her; he just wants some time for himself. Six months’ worth of time in fact. But if he’s on a break, then surely Amy deserves a bit of freedom too? An amusing, easy read for curling up with on a cold winter’s evening. The Handmaid’s Tale Margaret Atwood Now a critically acclaimed TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale was first published in 1985. The US government has been overthrown by a fundamentalist Christian organisation, which strips women of their rights. Birth rates have plummeted and, as one of the few fertile women left, June is forced to become a handmaid to a powerful commander, Fred. Renamed Offred, her sole purpose is to bear her master’s children. Gripping.

Word Ladder

WORDWHEEL

Change one letter at a time (but not the position of any letter) to make a new word - and move from the word at the top of the ladder to the word at the bottom, using the exact number of rungs provided.

Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.

AMTG NEWS

Vacant positions in A M T G By the time you read this we will have had a most successful concert at the Ivanhoe School on 7th October and now we are moving on to our next production of My Fair Lady at The 400 Hall, Repton which takes place 10-14th April 2018. What is the link between Professor Henry Higgins, Alfred P Doolittle, Colonel Hugh Pickering, Freddie Eynsford-Hill, Zoltan Karpathy, costermongers, household staff, ambassadors, lords, Ascot race-goers? Yes! These are all the parts that men, young and old, can audition for! We are currently looking for some new chaps to come and join us for this great show, so if you fancy applying then please contact us at enquiries@ amtg.org.uk.

116

Drop us a line and we will give more information about how to join us. You don’t need any performing experience, just a desire to try something new, and the whole AMTG team will make sure you wish you had done it before! We are also looking for help with our Wardrobe department, again please contact us at enquiries@ amtg.org.uk Costumes will be hired, not made, but we always need help with measuring, fitting, small adjustments and repairs so don’t imagine we’re looking for a Saville Row tailor! Just someone with a little flair with a needle! Finally, on the subject of new chaps, AMTG are pleased to announce the safe arrival of Spencer Lee on the 25th August – our choreographer Leanne O’Brien and her partner Scott’s third child, a beautiful new brother for Lillie and Stanley. Congratulations from us all!

Carbon Monoxide Every year people are admitted to hospital due to failure to have inspection and services carried out on Boilers, cookers heating systems and appliances (NHS) The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning aren’t always obvious, particularly during low-level exposure. A tension-type headache is the most common symptom of mild carbon monoxide poisoning. Other symptoms include: • • • • •

dizziness nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting tiredness and confusion stomach pain shortness of breath and difficulty breathing

Preventing carbon monoxide poisoning It’s important to be aware of the dangers and identify any appliances in your house that could potentially leak carbon monoxide.

Maintaining and servicing appliances Boilers, cookers, heating systems and appliances should be installed and annually serviced by a reputable, registered engineer. Don’t attempt to install or service applicances yourself. Anyone carrying out work on gas installations and appliances in your home must be registered with the Gas Safe Register.

SEASONAL RECIPES

CHOCOLATE AND ORANGE

Puddings

MAKES 6 Ready in 1hr 30 m ins

Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream. YOU WILL NEED: l

l

l l l l l l l

3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder, sifted 1 tbsp fresh orange juice 2 tsp orange zest Custard or cream, to serve

TOP TIP You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest.

in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour

CHESS PUZZLE

The Irritating Day –

It could be a perfect day. But normally there is some irritation. The delay due to roadworks. The computer cannot load the photos. Or my partner forgot to buy some bread. In chess, every game has its irritations. You are sure there is a win with your next move, but it eludes you. Such as with this position here. Obviously White will win. The challenge is to do it in two moves. Checkmate!
