Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Ashby de la Zouch Scouts & Explorers selected to represent Leicestershire & the UK at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in 2019 Every four years, tens of thousands of Scouts, from almost every country in the world gather in a tented city for two weeks of activities and adventure! In 2019 over 40,000 14-17 year olds plus leaders from 150 countries will unite for the 24th World Scout Jamboree. 4,000 Scouts & Explorer Scouts from the UK have been selected to attend this prestigious and lifechanging event. There are 54 from Leicestershire, 13 from Ashby & Coalville district and 7 from Ashby de la Zouch and Blackfordby. In Leicestershire, those Scouts interested had to apply for a place last July. Almost 100 of these were then invited to attend a selection camp at the end of September. They took part in a range of activities to assess who had the skills and potential to cope with being away for nearly 3 weeks and to form strong teams. Each Scout has to raise £4,100, through a range of fundraising events. Some of this money subsidises the jamboree cost for Scouts from developing countries, who would not otherwise be able to afford to attend – this international cost structure helps ensure each jamboree is a truly global experience. Each Jamboree includes a wide variety of outdoor adventure activities and places a great emphasis on everyday life and social interaction among different

cultures that is experienced through the Scouting campsite. Lewis Coker, age 13, is one of the lucky local Scouts selected to attend. He told us more about his own fundraising efforts so far and more about the trip he’s so looking forward to….

“The campsite is called The Summit Bechtel Reserve and there will be 40,000 scouts from around the world (I don’t think I’ll get to meet them all!). The Summit is 10,000 acres with a three mile Zip-line, a mountain bike course - much larger than Hicks Lodge - and white water rapids. It also contains an Amphitheatre which takes up 20.7 acres or 901,692 square feet, should be a good show! The trip includes a big city visit where we will be going to either New York or Washington DC, I would prefer Washington as I want to see the Lincoln Memorial, but I won’t find out till the camp in 2019. So far we have paid our first instalment of £450 and I am working hard toward my next payment in March. I have had loads of support from family, friends and this fabulous community. I fund raised at quite a few 5th November celebrations. At the Ashby Christmas Fair we sold Christmas Quizzes, had some fun competitions for the adults and little games for the kids including reindeer food. We have a few more fundraising events planned such as bag packs and a tree protector clearing session and there are more ideas in the pipeline. If you would like to get involved in fundraising please let us know and we will tell you how you can support your local scouting community. Thanks again for your support.” If you would like to offer support, help the Scouts in finding fundraising opportunities or simply find out more you can visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/AshbyWSJ2019/ or email AshbyWSJ2019@gmail.com

AMTG NEWS

Ten weeks to go and counting! ting By the time you read this article we will have approximately ten weeks before the opening night of My Fair Lady on Tuesday 10th April 2018! It’s not too late to join us– there are always plenty of backstage opportunities. From the set going into the theatre the weekend before, our stage crew and technicians have the most demanding rôle in ensuring that everything is in place for the week of the show. It is hard work, but they have great fun playing their part in the production, and it is a big comfort to all the actors onstage to know we are supported by such a strong and dedicated team. If you would like to join us onstage for the 2019 production (title yet to be announced) it is a good idea to come and join in the backstage fun now, to get to know us, and to see for yourself what a welcoming, friendly bunch we are! You don’t have to be a whizz with a hammer, or be strong enough

presents

to shift scenery either! There are plenty of areas such as props, wardrobe, make-up, hair etc, where you could join in the fun too. We are also always looking for sponsors and advertisers for our programme, which reaches up to 1800 visitors per production, so if you are interested in finding out more, do get in touch with us. Contact us at enquiries@amtg.org.uk to find out more! Tickets for My Fair Lady are available online at amtg.org.uk or by contacting the Box Office on 07527 228945.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH NEWS Anyone who regularly gives up chocolate for Lent might face a conundrum this year: They’ll have to hope they’re not given chocolate by their Valentine on February 14th, because this year it’s also Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. At St Helen’s church, as elsewhere on the ‘Day of Ashes’, foreheads will be marked with ash in the shape of a cross. And so it has been for hundreds of years. Our site in the heart of Ashby might be quite small but it has so many stories to tell, from way back in the Mesolithic era to the present day. People came to this place to worship and then went back to their homes and families. Their daily lives would have been very different to ours and our Heritage Project is all about capturing those moments in time and sharing the findings. What was Ash Wednesday like here in the year 601 when Pope Gregory decreed that Lent should be moved? Or on the ‘ashless’ Ash Wednesday of 1548? Join us on February 5th at 7.30pm when Dr Nick Gravestock will fill the Community Heritage

Centre with music to transport us to Tudor times, to the reign of Henry VIII, his forebears and heirs. And all for the princely sum of £3! Did you know that in Victorian times, theatres refrained from presenting costumed shows on Ash Wednesday? Our research volunteers are currently documenting the period when the church was extended by the Victorians, and uncovering fascinating snippets of people’s lives. If you’d like to be a ‘Sherlock’ and join in this research, contact our Heritage Officer on 07435 564236 or email sthelensheritage@gmail.com

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Our new exhibition features Ann Ayre Hely, born Ann Ayre Bradshaw, in Ravenstone in 1819. In August 1851 she married the village surgeon, an Irishman called Dr Hely. Three years later he was tragically killed when he accidentally drank poison thinking it was sherry. In March 1855, the now widowed Ann volunteered to go out as a nurse to tend the sick and injured soldiers of the Crimean War. When the war ended in 1856, she returned to England and nursed Florence Nightingale for a while. She went on to work as a housekeeper in some aristocratic households and eventually came to live in Ravenstone Hospital (almshouses) in 1889. Come and find out more about this extraordinary lady. The Museum has received a batch of coloured slides, taken in 2001, of nearly all NW Leicestershire’s non-conformist churches and chapels. These are being digitised and put on our photographic archive. This is only part of an enormous collection now totalling over 3,000 images, both past and present.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

It’s truly

euphoric!

We all know that exercise is one of the most important things to help keep our bodies in shape. We need to keep our hearts healthy, our cholesterol in check and our blood pressure under control. I’m passionate about my coaching and could talk to you all day about this, and the reasons why exercise is so important. However, what we sometimes don’t realise about exercise is that it also hugely improves and stimulates our mental health & wellbeing. Over the last few years there has been more and more research done with evidence to suggest that exercise can help with symptoms such as low mood depression, anxiety and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which is mostly diagnosed in the winter months. We can all feel a little down in the dumps from time to time, especially at this time of yyear which

is called the “post-Christmas downer”, when all the hype and excitement of Christmas & New Year is over, and spring with the longer, lighter days still seems a long way off. There is one very simple solution to help prolong that buzz and that is to incorporate some gym sessions into your weekly routine. The reason I’m suggesting this is that when we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins and these endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, this is often described as euphoric giving you a positive and energising outlook on life! In some cases, exercise can be just as effective as antidepressant medication in treating depression. I for one know that if I could bottle and sell this “euphoric” feeling exercise gives you then I would be one very rich lady! Over the years I have trained many men and women who have talked about this euphoric

feeling and how it has improved their lives tenfold, not only have they felt happier and more alert, but have also slept much better too, which in turn has helped them deal with stress more effectively. The majority of the ladies said their self-esteem and confidence was massively boosted, which I can totally relate to. Also, aging and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s actually kill off brain cells and whilst exercise cannot cure that, it can help to protect the brain against decline by boosting chemicals and preventing degeneration of memory problems. So, whether you’re into spinning, bodypump, yoga, boxing, biking, weights or just simply the treadmill, we can put together an individual programme that suits your specific needs that will not only help with your fitness goals but that

will also profoundly improve your overall mental health and wellbeing. I couldn’t think of a better way to start feeling not only physically fit, strong and healthy, but also having the mental strength and confidence to deal with today’s hectic lifestyles. So, if you would love to improve the way you feel, deal with stress better and have an overall more positive outlook then why not try us out. Grab one of our FREE 7 Day passes and see what the buzz is all about! We promise you won’t be disappointed. By Liz Coach at Fitness Republic

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

One Man, Two Guv’nors at the Venture Theatre The Ashby Venture Theatre’s February production will be One Man, Two Guv’nors. This is the second time the Venture Theatre have brought a version of the original play ‘A Servant of Two Masters’; Richard Bean’s version modernises the play setting it in 1960s Brighton. The audience follows Francis Henshall, recently unemployed and desperate for work to feed his mammoth appetite. When small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe is in need of a servant, Francis jumps at the chance, known to the audience but not the characters, ’Roscoe’ is actually Rachel Crabbe, posing as her dead brother. Much to Francis’s initial excitement for a second pay check, Roscoe’s killer and Rachel’s lover, Stanley Stubbers, is also in need of somebody to take care of his affairs. As Francis frantically tries to juggle the demands of both his masters only chaos and confusion result, much to the audience’s amusement. The play was originally a Commedia dell’arte play

which is an early form of theatre originating from Italy. The modernised play contains more characters than usual as they are based on the original stock characters for this type of theatre. For director, Karen Heath it has been a challenge to manage a larger cast but she’s already excited to show new and frequent Venture Theatre goers the result. One Man Two Guv’nors will run from 22nd to 24th of February and 28th February to 3rd March 2018. Tickets are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre and online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ashbydramaticsociety

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020 DO WE NEED TARGETS TO HELP US SAVE MORE FOR RETIREMENT? The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has come up with a suggestion to help people keep their pension plans on track. It has called for savings targets to be put in place to help individuals save enough for a good pension for their retirement years. According to their researchi, 13 million people haven’t made sufficient pension provision and 78% of those aged between 18 and 64 don’t know how to go about finding out how much pension they will receive when they retire. The PLSA is considering developing a new set of benchmarks that will help savers by providing target figures for them to aim for. Retirement income targets are commonly used in Australia, and can help people become more informed about their pension by explaining how much they need to save to achieve different standards of living in retirement – such as minimum, modest and comfortable. GETTING THE RIGHT ADVICE Whilst most people know that they should save regularly throughout their working lives to accumulate enough to retire on, fewer people are aware of how much they might need to live on, or whether their current pension

40

arrangements are on track to achieve their goals. Researchii has shown that the average person in the UK thinks that they will need an income of £29,700 a year when they retire; what they are often not so clear about is that to achieve this level of income, they would need to have accumulated a pension pot of around £364,000 on top of a full state pension. This is where getting advice can really help. We can provide valuable insight into how much your current pension savings are worth, what level of income you can expect to retire on, and what steps you can take to improve your standard of living in your later years. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current pension plans and financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020. i Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association, Nov 2017. ii One Family, Nov 2017

Could You be a

Silver Swan?

As we grow older, we often regret not taking advantage of the opportunities we had as children, or that our friends had. Many people remember their childhood dance lessons with fondness, and many others wish that they’d had dance lessons.

Hannah is a passionate advocate for the Silver Swans concept as she has always believed that any age or ability can benefit from classical ballet’s artistry of expression and its disciplined approach to developing a physical technique.

There is absolutely no reason why older learners may not reap the physical and mental benefits of dancing and that is why the Silver Swans programme has been created.

She is now bringing Silver Swan Classes through ‘On Your Toes School of Dancing’ to Packington Memorial Hall every Tuesday 4-5pm. For more information please contact Hannah on 07985 202283 or email onyourtoesdanceschool@gmail.com

Primarily designed for the over-55s (though all ages and abilities are welcomed), Silver Swans classes have been seen to improve mobility, posture, coordination and energy levels. They are also a great way to meet people and make new friends as the classes are very sociable. Hannah La Trobe is a Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Silver Swans licenced teacher who teaches classes in adult ballet dance practice. She has trained extensively in this area and since 2000 has managed her own dance school in Pembrokeshire where she has taught students from age 3 to 85.

You can also find details of the Silver Swans classes on the Royal Academy of Dance’s website: www.rad.org.uk/learn-to-dance/ silver-swans-1/why-silver-swans Hannah’s personal work in Wales is on facebook at Silver Swans Ballet in Wales

ON THE BEAT Lady Gretton, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire invites you to celebrate the achievements of young people across the city and county by nominating an inspiring young person aged 13 to 19 for this year’s awards at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/llawards This year’s categories will celebrate the very best examples of effort and achievement. People can nominate for: Young Braveheart, Young Volunteer, Young Sportsperson and Young Artist. For 2018, the special Young Investigator category commemorates the centenary of the First World War. Lady Gretton, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, said: “Having led the awards for more than a decade

pancakes

RECIPE

PERFECT

MAKE S Ready 8 in 30 min s

Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. YOU WILL NEED: l

100g plain flour

l

Pinch of salt

l

1 large egg

l

l

300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying

METHOD: 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 mins to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand – this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then whisk in a splash of milk. SWEET Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche.

4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven. SAVOURY Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 mins until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

MONEY MATTERS

Payroll

An on-going struggle?

Whether you’re a small business or a larger business, administering payroll can be a timeconsuming and complex process. Historically, payroll has been perceived as a data-processing function. However, due to the ever-changing complexities of taxation, pensions auto-enrolment, employment and data protection legislation, payroll has evolved into much more and has become an integral function of many businesses. As a business owner, keeping up to date and compliant can prove increasingly difficult for employers. The last 12 months alone has seen the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy, increases in the National Minimum Wage (NMW), National Living Wage (NLW) and changes to the salary sacrifice scheme introduced in the latest budget. The main benefits of an outsourced payroll function include: 1. Staff cover – mitigates issues when payroll staff are on annual leave or off work due to illness, as the payroll function will operate regardless when outsourced. 2. Experienced and well-trained staff – mitigates the requirement to train staff and keep up-todate with legislative changes, employment taxes and so on. 3. Free-up time – for many small businesses in particular, outsourcing the payroll function will free-up staff time to focus on other aspects of the business. 4. Cost savings – maintaining payroll software and ensuring staff are appropriately trained can be costly and is an on-going investment in order to keep up-to-date. Outsourcing payroll eliminates this burden and can reduce overall costs. 5. Avoid penalties – there has been increasing coverage in the national press of companies being fined for payroll non-compliance, in 66

Outsourcing payroll eliminates the risk of penalties being imposed. 6. Avoid technology headaches – payroll software is required to be updated on a regular basis and failure to do so could result in incorrect deductions being taken from employees and inaccurate information submitted to HM Revenue & Customs. An outsourced payroll function can also provide additional services including Construction Industry Scheme compliance, auto-enrolment administration, dealing with HM Revenue & Customs enquiries, systems training and other advisory services.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

It’s all about Love For years I remember checking the post on the 14th February for any cards someone might have sent me. Then one glorious day I actually received a card. Frustratingly it was anonymously signed with a question mark. I’m still none the wiser! It is strange looking back how self-possessed such hopes were, yet as we grow so does our capacity to love. From the child who says “I love you” because they are kept warm, safe and fed, to the adult who tells the young child they love them despite being kept awake all night. As we mature our love becomes more giving and more inclusive. In the end love is about giving. What will we give to those we love? I gave a kidney to one of my children. When the doctor said I had a 1 in 9000 chance of dying in the operation it seemed a cheap price to pay to save a life. Jesus said “Greater

love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This was an incredible and immeasurable self-giving love for other people – Jesus putting himself last, not first, to save others; and God loving us so much that he allowed it to happen. So there’s one thing I am certain, unlike the teenager hoping for a card on Valentine’s day, I know that God does love me. He loves me with an unrelenting love that He extends to all – what’s more it’s a love that’s not anonymous! A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Exploring

Charnwood Noon Column

1

Within the National Forest there W are 6 Noon Columns - each is carved from English Oak to reflect c the character of the landscape in which it sits. Over the next few f months we will be visiting 6 different areas of the National Forest to take a short stroll around the t site of each of the columns. We start with the Charnwood Noon No Column which is situated within Billa B Barra Nature Reserve, close to the A511 ithi Bill N t at Markfield. I loved the e smooth lines of this Noon Column and the small section of dry stone wall which has been built beside de it. Billa Barra Nature Reserve is a quiet spot with a mix of open grassland, young woodland and a wonderful er old copse of trees on top of the hill. Our loop goes up the hill, where you can explore the rocky outcrops, ou p , before heading down and circling the nature reserve.

2

This short walk takes about 30 minutes. It starts at the small car park off Billa Barra Lane reached by turning off the A511 towards Stanton n Under Bardon (just after Redgate Animal Sanctuary and then first left into Billa Barra Lane). The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE67 9PD. Take the obvious path on the left of the car park which leads past a signboard, down a sh short path, and out to the open hillside where you will see the Noon Column (1). Walk past the column and up the lu hill heading towards a bench on the hillside. As you near the bench bear left and follow lo the grassy path up to a wooden kissing gate (2)) leading into the copse of trees. You need to tu turn immediately left after this gate, but before you do so you may like to spend a few minutes exploring the hilltop (3). o

3

Follow a very narrow path that t runs downhill beside quite it a steep dip. Pass by a small m wooden gate on your left le keeping straight on to o reach a second gate. Go through this gate into an area of g grassland - you will see a green metal gate on your left. Tu Turn right and d ffollow ll th the path across the grass a as it bears left to reach a gateway leading g out onto the lane. Don’t go through this gateway ew - instead turn right, walk fo or a few yards, then go through a wooden kissing n gaate on your left ft that leads into young woodland. A wide ride takes you through the woodland, slowly o arccing round to the right (you will soon hear/see the A511 off to your left). When you see a wo ooden gate on your rright bear left so that you stay within h the woodlaand (don’t go through the gate) - thiss path will take you around to a second narrrower pa d through the gate and turn left to cross gate. Go th bridge (4). After crossing the bridge a wooden w e urn right tu ht to head back up the hillside on a grassy ra paath, gradually bearing left, to reach anotherr wooden w en kissing gate on the brow of the hill. Go hrough th g this (you can now see the noon column below b w you) and turn left to go through another th gate g e leading onto a wide grassy ride. Follow this ride g back d downhill (5). After a straight section it bends around to the rightt and then ends at a stile after which c emerges behind the grassy bank n at the far right hand end of the e car park.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Generation indoor gardening The cool and creative youngsters that are in the ‘Generation Rent’ club have found a hip new way of gardening. The lack of property ownership amongst the young hasn’t kept them from gardening – they are making it small scale, transportable and it’s indoors. Ikea for example have designed sleek and minimal cultivators that don’t look out of place in the sleekest kitchens. Growing kits can include a sort of minimal tiered trolley or sideboard, with trays for pots, compost and seeds. The growing mediums are light and packed with nutrients. Some kits also include cultivation light to combat the short winter days. A yearning for growing plants, a creative streak, a nurturing instinct, and an interest in nature - any of these has contributed to a new surge in sales of house plants, succulents, micro vegetables and even home-grown edible flowers for decorating cocktails and cakes. A similar new trend is Aquascaping - this is planting aquariums (a wonderfully transportable garden!) It is so popular that courses are available at garden centres. In bigger towns and cities, restaurants frequently have trendy displays of plants, cool

ceramic jars or urban style steel containers, all artistically arranged on shelves or hooked onto steel trellis-covered walls. Another surge in sales is for ‘Air Plants’ which are fascinating (they need no compost at all – just air) and are increasingly used to create a modern interior living wall. They can be suspended from wire or bark and these can be fixed with waterproof glue to create whatever pattern you fancy: symmetrical, asymmetrical, random – whatever. The light green foliage is stunning against a trendy dark blue or grey painted wall. The air plants are easy to care for and just need regularly misting with a fine spray. As a central table arrangement in a sunny space, small succulents or cacti, arranged in a shallow bowl, will need only minimal maintenance, but look very interesting. One can easily make a unique and individual display. It is rather like the creation of a landscape in miniature. There are so many positives to this new trendapart from being able to actively take care of plants without having to face the winter weather. Growing vegetables inside is a good way for children to learn about nature and be involved in growing food – even on rainy days. Young children will have a greater knowledge of how food is grown rather than it just appearing in supermarkets. In many warmer European cities where most of the accommodation is in apartments, the residents cultivate a few essential herbs in window boxes. In the UK where it is colder, Basil, Parsley, Oregano, Chives and Thyme can be grown inside on a sunny windowsill if you water and mist the plants regularly.

Happy gardening!

BEAUTY

Winter S.O.S.

Beauty goodies to see you through the cold spell If your skin is feeling dry and tight at the moment, a sheet mask could be just the ticket. Look for one with hyaluronic acid, which helps skin to hold on to moisture and fight the signs of ageing. The skin689 Bio-Cellulose Hyaluron Face Mask contains hyaluronic acid, along with coconut extract and an amino acid complex to nourish skin. As with all sheet masks, it’s a little fiddly to use, but feels lovely and refreshing when it’s on and the end results are definitely worth it. Softer, more hydrated skin, in just 20 minutes. And at £5.90, it’s an affordable weekend treat. See www.skin689.com. An American skincare brand has released the world’s first vegan, plant-based topical collagen formula. Algenist’s serum is designed to replace lost collagen and contains Omega-rich microalgae oil. As with many things, there’s no long-term gain without short-term pain. In my case this meant that I had to contend with several large pimples breaking out in the first few days of using the serum. However, my skin soon got used to it, and did look plumper, smoother and much more refreshed after just a couple of weeks. All in all, I’m impressed. Genius Liquid Collagen is available from www.SpaceNK. com for £90.

Central heating and icy winds don’t just wreak havoc on your skin - they can also leave your hair feeling dry and lacklustre. Faith in Nature’s Seaweed & Citrus Shampoo and Conditioner include natural extracts, such as wild harvested seaweed to ‘feed’ your hair with minerals and antioxidants. As with all Faith in Nature products, they’re free from parabens and harsh ingredients, so very gentle. Suitable for all hair types, they leave your locks feeling healthier, smoother and shinier. £5.35 each from www.faithinnature.co.uk Sore, cracked hands can be a real pain over the colder months. Unfortunately, some hand creams can actually make the situation worse, particularly if they contain artificial perfumes. Dermalex is a specialist skincare range aimed at sufferers of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. The Hand Irritation Cream can help with dry, cracked skin, itching and other signs of irritation. You’ll also want to look for a gentler hand wash or soap that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, which can dry your skin and aggravate skin conditions. From £12.99, www.dermalex.co.uk. It may be cold outside, but it won’t be long before it’s time to pack the winter woollies away for a few months. If you’ve been neglecting your nails under warm gloves, now’s the time to treat them to some TLC. Nails Inc Superfood NailKale Base Coat is enriched with kale, aloe vera, lemon, ginseng, pomegranate and grape extracts to nourish and strengthen your nails. Use it on its own for a glossy nude finish, or as a base coat for your favourite coloured polish. £15, www.nailsinc.com.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

Solutions to all puzzles can be found on page 124.

BOOK REVIEWS

Hidden

gems

We usually focus on new releases for our book reviews, but this time we’ve scoured the back catalogues for a few gems you might have missed. Station Eleven Emily St. John Mandel

Harry Potter series JK Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay

From Kirsten – child actor turned travelling thespian – to aspiring doctor Jeevan, the novel tells the individual stories of several people before, during and after a pandemic that wipes out most of the population. Gripping, beautiful and all too plausible, Station Eleven is a must for fans of Margaret Atwood, Erin Morgenstern and Suzanne Collins.

There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of the boy wizard by now. If you’re a fan, you might want to consider upgrading your paperbacks for the hardbacks illustrated by Jim Kay. Kay’s illustrations are superb and incredibly detailed. Prefer e-readers? Check out the Kindle in Motion editions, which animate parts of the illustrations, so you can watch Harry fly through the air in hot pursuit of the golden snitch while you’re reading. The Mysterious Affair at Styles Agatha Christie

The Crow Road Iain Banks The Crow Road covers some pretty big themes – love, death, religion, drugs and fractured families being just a few of them. Prentice McHoan returns home for his grandmother’s funeral and soon gets drawn into trying to solve the mystery of his Uncle Rory’s disappearance. It’s a dark, intense novel and far from an easy read, but the wit and sheer beauty of the writing could well make it one of your all-time favourites. Why Mummy Drinks Gill Sims Gill Sims is the author of a hugely successful Facebook blog – Peter and Jane’s Mummy. Why Mummy Drinks was released last autumn and quickly became a bestseller. Written in diary format, it tells the story of Ellen, a 39 year old mum of two, who’s trying to balance work and children, while navigating playground politics, irritating in-laws and an ex-boyfriend. The ensuing drama is extremely funny and very relatable if you’re a parent who isn’t quite ready to hang up her dancing shoes.

If last year’s hit film Murder on the Orient Express has tempted you to dip into the works of Agatha Christie, why not start with her very first novel? Published in 1920 and set during World War I, it introduces readers to the brilliant mind of Belgian refugee Hercule Poirot. The murder of a woman has everyone pointing the finger at one man. It’s down to Poirot to find out the real culprit before it’s too late. While The Mysterious Affair at Styles is not considered Christie’s finest work, there are still plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked. Cuckoo Song Frances Hardinge Cuckoo Song was first published in 2014, the year before Frances Hardinge’s Costa Award-winning novel The Lie Tree. Eleven year old Triss wakes up from an accident to find things aren’t as they were. She can’t satisfy her immense hunger for a start; her sister is terrified of her; and even her dolls have turned against her. Is she going mad, or is the truth even more terrifying? A thoroughly enjoyable, fantastical read, Cuckoo Song is sure to prove a hit with fans of Neil Gaiman and Angela Carter.

PET’S CORNER

Caring For an Older Dog When your dog ages, it begins to slow down and generally puts on weight. It may struggle with arthritis, making it difficult to move around with ease, particularly during the colder months. So what can you do to alleviate the symptoms of old age for your dog? Here are a few ideas that could put the spring back in their step. Glucosamine and chondroitin Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can aid movement by protecting your dog’s cartilage, lubricating their joints, and easing the pain of arthritis. It may take a while to get into their system, so it needs to be taken regularly. Individual needs vary, however, so speak to your vet, as they’ll be able to tell you the recommended dosage for your pet. Check their diet A dog’s nutritional needs change as they age, and you may find that as they become less active, the requirement for protein reduces. If your dog doesn’t want to eat one large meal a day, you could try offering them two or three smaller meals – this

might ease their digestion, and make them more comfortable at night. Keep exercising Even though they’re slowing down, it’s important to exercise regularly. This may mean having shorter, more frequent walks, rather than one long outing every day. Your pet will benefit from the fresh air and exercise, whatever the distance you walk. Caring for an older dog isn’t difficult. You just need to adjust the routine to account for their changing needs – much like us humans.

LIFE BEGINS

Don’t leave your clutter to the kids! If you have children, you’ve probably thought about what you might leave them when you die. Maybe your home, if you are lucky enough to own a property? Some money? Or perhaps there are much-loved family heirlooms that you’ve planned to share out between them? Most of us are happy to make a will, setting out how we will dispose of these assets, but not enough of us stop to consider what will happen to

the rest of our possessions: the bits and pieces we accumulate throughout our lives. Every item, including furniture, clothes, ornaments, framed pictures,

souvenirs, books and papers – not to mention boxes of stuff that you’ve been meaning to sort out for years – will need to be picked over and subsequently sold, given away or discarded.

Almost inevitably it will be your children who are left to scale this mountain of possessions. As well as organising your funeral and dealing with all the legal and administrative tasks that accompany a death, they will have to spend hours at your property, emptying the contents of cupboards and drawers into black plastic sacks.

Whose responsibility is it anyway?

When a person dies, a grant of probate is needed for the executor of the will to act on important financial matters, but there is no official framework in place to handle the disposal of household items and possessions – legally known as ‘chattels’ or ‘fittings’. While chattels may have little monetary value, they can nevertheless hold great significance for family members on an emotional level. If two or more family members can’t agree what to do with mum or dad’s possessions, it may lead to arguments and even to the break up of relationships.

How can I cut my clutter?

While it’s unreasonable to expect older people to clear out possessions that they still need and value, over time we all accumulate items that we seldom use, or even look at. If that applies to you, start by working systematically through cup116

boards and drawers, making three piles – things you want to keep, things you can recycle or give to a charity shop, and items you can throw away. Check through your clothes, eliminating anything that hasn’t been worn in the past two years: if you haven’t put it on within that period of time, it’s unlikely you’ll ever wear it again. Do an audit of your furniture. Once you’ve managed to sort through your possessions, you may find that some cupboards and drawers are now half empty. If so, think about combining your remaining possessions in one place so you can eliminate at least one piece of furniture. One way to avoid arguments after your death is to call the family together to discuss how they would like to divide up the pieces that they value. You don’t have to give those things away now – just agree who will receive each item, encouraging family members to take a photo of the pieces they will take when the time comes. As you grow older you may need mobility aids to get around, so you’ll be glad of the extra space you have created through your de-cluttering efforts. You can also be reassured that by taking time to sort through your possessions now, you’ll be saving your family a lot of time, effort and heartache in future.

HEALTH

How to get a Good Night’s Sleep A poor night’s sleep might seem like just an inconvenience. But research has shown that insufficient or poor-quality sleep can contribute to serious health problems, including: • Weight gain and obesity • Weakened immunity. • Increased risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. • Reduced fertility and libido. • Reduced memory, concentration and reaction times. • Increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. This means it’s vital that we all get enough good quality sleep, which usually means at least seven hours. However, it’s not always easy. The Enemies of Sleep • Burning the candle at both ends, trying to fit in relaxation and domestic duties. • Sleep disorders: night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea. • Needing the toilet • Pain e.g. from arthritis • An uncomfortable mattress or pillow. • Menstruation (pain, heavy bleeding and hormonal changes that affect temperature and production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin). • Snoring • Blue light • Smoking and alcohol • GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal or ‘silent’ reflux, in which stomach acid can damage airways, causing asthmalike symptoms) Ten Tips to Help You Sleep: 1. Stop snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight can help. Try sleeping on your side, nasal strips, sprays or mandibular adjustment devices. If these don’t work, consult your doctor. 2. Don’t go to bed hungry - but don’t eat late. Don’t eat less than two hours before bedtime. If you’re hungry in the evenings, choose something light and easily digestible. 3. Stop smoking and eliminate evening alcohol and caffeine. All three can contribute to GORD and LPR. 118

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

4. Look after your body and its clock. Our bodies need exercise and daylight during the day and a more relaxed, dim environment in the evening to trigger our body clock regulation hormones. 5. Avoid blue light two hours before bedtime. Blue light, produced by modern TVs, tablets, computers and mobiles, interferes with melatonin production. 6. Declutter your brain. Try writing down your worries and to-do lists before bedtime. It can be therapeutic in itself, and relieves the stress of trying to remember everything. 7. Have a night-time routine. Choose relaxing activities like reading in the hour or two before bedtime. 8. Make your bedroom a haven. Avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumping ground for clutter. Keep your bedroom well ventilated, not too hot or cold, and softly lit. 9. Don’t lie there worrying about not sleeping. Instead, get up and do something relaxing, until you feel sleepy. 10. Finally, see your doctor if you have problems with hormonal changes, night time urination, mental health, GORD, LPR or pain. Your GP can investigate possible causes and recommend helpful treatments and lifestyle changes.
