24 hours in mid canterbury was covered, and captured the happenings of our glorious community, from Longbeach to Mt Somers, Methven, Rakaia and everything in-between. We knew it would be a challenge to pull this off. We knew it would be exhausting and we knew we were in for an adventure, but we all experienced far more than we had imagined. Here is an in-sight to the fun and frivolity we all experienced while creating this magazine for the community. “It was heaps of fun being able to get out into the community to see what happens within a 24-hour period. At the start on Friday we were all rearing to go and excited to get into it, and by Saturday lunchtime I had some great feed-back to give to my team-mates about my 24-hours in Mid Canterbury. I met some fantastic people, saw some very camera friendly children and heard some heart-warming stories. It was definitely an experience I will never forget and it was one that made me love the Ashburton community spirit and Mid Canterbury region even more than before,” Suzanna said. Mid Canterbury is an awesome place to live. You know it, because you live and breathe it every day, and we wanted to capture the magic that makes our place and our people so amazing. Few of us appreciate what happens in our district over a 24 hour period. We are so busy leading our own lives, that we don’t stop to think about what others may be doing at two in the morning while we are sleeping. What time does the postie get up to have the rural mail delivered to some areas before seven in the morning? And how does the Ashburton Guardian manage to capture the days news, and have thousands of copies printed and delivered to many homes before three in the morning? To find out, we set ourselves a challenge. The advertising team at the Ashburton Guardian worked around the clock, from noon on Friday June 22 to noon Saturday June 23, 2012, to photographically capture as much as we possibly could of what was happening in Mid Canterbury during that exact time. This coincided with Winter Solstice. The sun set behind the Southern Alps casting a magnificent glow behind Mt Somers at only 4.50pm, so while we had the shortest day, we also had the longest night. And for those working through the early hours, boy was it a long night. What we all experienced was truly inspirational, surprising and interesting, all of which is testament to what a fantastic, diverse community we live in. For this challenge, our advertising team consisted of Nancye Pitt, Alex Green, Lester McLean, Amanda Wright, Brian Tiernan, Emma Jaillet-Godin and Suzanna Macilquham. We teamed up to ensure the full 24 hours
Advertising manager Nancye Pitt not only led the project from the front, but also joined the team in capturing our community. “Being a veteran of projects like ‘24 hours in Mid Canterbury’, I was delighted to find the locals just as friendly as the other times I looked for the people participating in real life in the darkness of the night. Being a born and bred Ashburtonian, it was great to see the familiar faces of other locals going about their social life rather than meeting them in a business situation,” Nancye said. Alex commented, “Working the ‘night shift’ I was surprised at how much really happens in the background in Ashburton. It doesn’t really occur to you how much effort it takes to keep a town running smoothly – security people, fast food and courtesy vehicles nursing the nightlife, retail getting restocked for another busy day – it seems that blessed 5pm knockoff time is only applicable to a tiny portion of the world. The most entertainment we had would’ve been when we had a few spare minutes to take photos of us pretending to be drunken youths vandalising the boss’s house – made for a hilarious reaction the next day,” Emma mentioned, “When I started taking pictures at noon, I was really excited about the project, not only because of the community photo album we were about to create, but because of all the new people I was about to meet. I took my last Friday photo after 11pm at Kelly’s and had the chance to meet lovely people that I photographed. I was so happy when they invited me to join them for a wine to celebrate the end of the first day.

I was back on from eight on Saturday morning through until noon, the sun was shining and it was a bit warmer, which was a pleasant change. I will always remember how lovely the people were that I met, and how happy they were to have their picture taken, well almost everyone!” As a Methven resident, Amanda covered some of the more rural locations. “I have to admit I was nervous at the start. Taking photos of people I didn’t know was a little outside of my comfort zone, but it got easier as the hours ticked by. I had an absolute blast, from meeting Doppler at the Blue pub in Methven, to walking through Salmon World in Rakaia, going to the tiny tots disco at St David’s Church, meeting the Chef at Stronechrubie and having a hot chocolate by the fire at Terrace Downs. Unfortunately the ski field was closed due to massive winds, and the closer you got to the Alps, the stronger the rain and wind was. It felt like a whole new world when I arrived back in Ashburton to a mild, blue sky day.“ “At noon Saturday it would be fair to say I was pretty exhausted, but it was a fantastic experience, one I will always remember fondly,” Amanda said. Lester and Brian were two more of the team that elected to work the ‘graveyard shift’, which incidentally included a trip to the graveyard, to investigate the ‘dead centre’ of town after midnight. “Working the 11pm to 6.30am shift was a very interesting experience, seeing exactly what does happen in Ashburton in the early hours of the morning. Most people were in a very jovial mood and one or two did tell me what I could do with the camera, which has not gone missing and can still be seen,” Lester said. Brian commented “I started at midnight at the graveyard, which reminded me a bit of going to the pub in Ashburton on a Monday night, except there was probably more chance of me scoring at the graveyard! I also met quite a few of the unsung heroes who are on duty during the wee hours, people like the St John’s ambulance crew and the Fire Service, and a couple of mid Canty’s dedicated dairy workers who get up at 4.30am every morning to make sure I can have milk on my Weet-Bix before work.” The Ashburton Guardian would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mid Canterbury businesses that supported the production of this publication, and to the people of Mid Canterbury who were friendly and accommodating in allowing us to take their picture.
