Each year we celebrate mums in YOU magazine. Why? Because mums are amazing and this magazine is for and about women. And before the feminist backlash stings me with its tail, no we’re not saying all women should be mums, or are mums, or are even good mums, but we love our mums and we love hearing about fabulous mums. Being a parent is no easy task, whether you’re mum or dad. Our kids seem to be more stressed/anxious/depressed, and there is no simple answer to this. Yes, social media plays a part, but I’ve also seen some substantiated and unsubstantiated views making absentee parents the issue and kids not being made ‘resilient’ or to take responsibility for their actions. Yep, parenting is hard, so let’s celebrate our mums. And if you have a fantastic mum, nominate her (details on page 12) and give her a fantastic day on us and our generous sponsors! Cheers,
Lisa Fenwick

Kaylee building global fan base
Kaylee Bell’s career is on the rise. Performances with some of country music’s biggest names, regular writing trips to Nashville, and opportunities opening up in Europe, mean the singer-songwriter is on track to rapidly become a household name. Her success in country music has been built on hard work, determination, and a passion for her craft that started way back when she was just four. Growing up in the South Canterbury town of Waimate, the support she’s received along the way has fostered a successful career at home, in Australia and she’s now taking on the rest of the world. Kaylee spoke with YOU magazine’s Megan Gnad, about the growing influence of country music, discovering a global fanbase and performing with hit-maker, after hit-maker.
Right – Having found success closer to home in New Zealand and Australia, Kaylee Bell is now building fanbases in the US and Europe.

T
he reaction to Kaylee Bell’s inaugural performance at Europe’s biggest country music festival, Country to Country (C2C) last month, proved to be a game-changer for the Kiwi star. In what was her first visit to London, she was understandably unsure of what to expect during the showcase held at London’s The O2 arena. But new fans in the UK had come prepared by downloading every track,
absorbing every single, and learning every word. Before she even stepped up on the stage, New Zealand’s Kaylee Bell was already a recognised name at the festival, which attracted more than 70,000 fans. “It was unreal,” she recalls of the experience. “I’d never been to London, so that in itself was a novelty, and I loved it so much, but C2C was such an amazing festival to be part of. “I couldn’t believe how passionate

the fans were, they were out from early morning, singing words back; it was just such an amazing, warm vibe. “I think it’s the start of the relationship, and I hope it leads to other Kiwis getting the chance to play over there, too. They really took to me and I think we’re similar in lots of ways with our culture, so I think they were intrigued by what kind of music we create in New Zealand.” continued over page

From P5 The opportunity to break into the booming UK country music market has been huge, and since the performances, Kaylee’s noticing more European fans are discovering and sharing her music wider than she ever could have imagined. It may seem things have started taking off at a speedy rate for the Getting Closer writer, with national television and radio appearances, and representing New Zealand on the other side of the world, but it’s taken many years of hard graft, and dedication to get to this point in her career.
Above – Passionate about building the exposure of country music in New Zealand, Kaylee says, “you can’t get on the country train when you’re not being exposed to it”.

A strong foundation Music’s been with Kaylee her entire life, having started singing for anyone who would listen from the tender age of four. Talent quest performances with her siblings while growing up, alongside a soundtrack of strong female country artists - Reba McEntire, Jo Dee Messina, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift – began influencing her writing, and inspired her to forge a career in the industry. At the age of 18, she won the NZ Gold Guitar Award and headed to Tamworth for the first time. “After that trip I knew a career in country music was actually possible,” she says. “I finished my study (a Bachelor of Performing Arts) at NASDA in Christchurch, and moved to Australia when I was 21 by myself to start carving a career. I won Toyota Star Maker, a big competition in Australia – Keith Urban won in 1990 – and that was the door I needed to open for me and introduce me to the industry.” Work in Australia captured industry attention, and her debut album, Heartfirst, saw more than 10 Top 10 singles on the Australian Country Music charts. Her single Pieces, written and released with fellow Toyota Star Maker Jared Porter, launched straight to #1 on radio charts across Australia, and earned her the US Unsigned

Only Competition Overall Grand Prize from more than 10,000 all-genre entries. It was the first time anyone outside the US had won the award. In 2014, a major opportunity arose when Kaylee was invited to perform with Keith Urban on his Light the Fuse World Tour of Australia, and then again on his 2016 ripCORD World Tour in Wellington. The following year, she also performed as the Dixie Chicks’ World Tour support act, held at Mission Estate, to a crowd of more than 30,000 fans. It was the key break-out moment that started opening more doors, and taking her music to a much wider audience. Last year, her single Getting Closer, written with Australian country artist, Morgan Evans, reached two million plays on Spotify, and was swiftly followed up by singles Next Somebody, and One More Shot, which saw one million plays in just three months. It’s Kaylee’s latest single, Keith, written as a tribute to Keith Urban for his impact on her career to date, which looks set to have the biggest reaction. By pure coincidence at the C2C showcase, the day Kaylee performed her very first London gig, that same night Urban headlined the arena concert – his first return to the UK in 10 years.

Catching up with him backstage was the icing on the cake, as the two Kiwis reflected on the significant moment. “It was awesome to meet up in London and see him nail his gigs, and just show how top-class he is as a performer,” she says. “He’s a large part of why I had the courage to move to Australia myself, and
why I’ve been going back to Nashville for the past 10 years. As he aimed high, and made it, it’s encouraged me to do the same. I also love his style of country music, and how ‘rock’ his show is. I’d like to put on a show with the same level of songs and energy one day.” continued over page

Joints and circulation
Exercise while sitting watching TV or reading. It’s easy and gives so much relief. Twelve years ago a lady from Te Horo devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles. The inflatable cushion, shaped like a pair of feet, allowed her husband to exercise his ankle, knee and hip joints, wrists, fingers, arms and shoulders while sitting. It was so effective an arthritis educator requested more be made for other sufferers. The gentle exercises not only help aching joints but
hugely improve circulation in legs, feet and hands. Users report swollen ankles, night cramps and restless legs greatly improved. Diabetes related problems are eased. Leg muscles are strengthened and balance improved helping users to walk further with greater confidence. “Aircycle is even better than the information says. The pain in my knees has gone and although I use a walker I don’t need it around the house anymore” – Gay, Rotorua Advertising feature

Cool gift ideas just for Mum
Of all the people you shop for, your Mum can be the most challenging. When you ask her what she wants, she’ll probably say, “I don’t want anything, thanks and besides, you shouldn’t spend your money” on her. There’s plenty of cool stuff out there your mum would never ask for, but secretly wants. She’s just too nice to tell you. That puts you in a tough spot. So, we’ve rounded up three of the best gifts for different types of Mums.
1. For the really busy Mum
The very best affordable robot vacuum Mum insists on a clean house, but she’s super busy. She could always use a little help around the home, but you’re busy too, so buy her a robot vacuum instead. Her hard floors and carpets will be effortlessly clean.
2. For the fitness fanatic Mum A fitness tracker Counting her step during her grueling Zumba workout will be easier when Mum has a fitness tracker on her wrist. Mum will appreciate that it’s also waterproof and has a true touchscreen, a female health feature, and a refined design with interchangeable bands.
3. For the empty nester Mum New plants to look after Your Mum is the best at taking care of everyone and everything. But she might sometimes feel a little lonely once her children have grown up and flown the nest. It may cheer her up to have a window full of green plants to care for.

Sister Act brings out creative side
Director Regan Jackson is revelling in being able to access his creative side as he throws himself into his latest challenge – Sister Act.
By day, Jackson is a regional labour market manager for the Ministry of Social Development in Christchurch, where he lives with wife Emma and their two daughters aged 12 and nine. The office job is one he enjoys, but not nearly as much as his second job, that of directing shows for societies in Ashburton, Timaru and Christchurch. “They are completely different, one is very creative and the other is very corporate,” he said of the two roles. He is having a great time with Sister Act, representing the third time he has directed for Variety Theatre Ashburton. His foray into the Ashburton theatre world came with the sell-out success of Chicago five years ago, followed by a

highly polished rendition of The Addam’s Family two years ago. This time round Sister Act is keeping him and the rest of the Variety crew energised and excited about bringing the show to the stage next month. “It’s upbeat, it’s disco, it’s fun, but it’s also got a really nice underlying message, which is all about the universal power of friendship and self-belief,” Jackson said. While he had begun preparing about 10 months ago, it was only in the last three weeks that he had come onto the
set, bringing together the elements that the cast and musical director Jo Castelow and choreographer Jessie Thomson have been working on to date. Act one of the two-act show was now all “blocked and set”, he said. “Which I’m really, really pleased about, because the cast is so hardworking and talented, and focused on getting it all right, and also having a huge amount of fun, because it’s a fun show,” he said. “The talent in a small town like this just continues to amaze me. Some small towns struggle to pull together talent, but Ashburton just seems to year after year attract a huge amount of talent.” Sister Act will stage at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre May 24 to June 1.

Cancer-fighting foods
ith the prevalence of cancer among us, it makes us all feel vulnerable when we see those close to us either suffering from this disease or dying from it. Food is a powerful source of nutrients that all the cells in our body vitally need to obtain the correct nutrition to function optimally every day. Our modern diet of convenience foods is often missing a large number of the important essential nutrients our cells require to stay fully nourished. Even chewing our food to a pulp is vitally important to extract the vitamins and minerals that all of our cells require to help stave off ill-health. The core food groups that our body requires to aid in cell maintenance are fruits and vegetables predominantly, which a large majority of us are not consuming enough of on a daily basis. It is recommended that we get at least five-plus a day of fruits and vegetables, but a number of health professionals believe this may not be enough. According to them we should actually be eating nine-plus a day of fruits and vegetables. It is often a misconception that fruits and vegetables are expensive, but when bought and broken down to meal-size portions, they are easily comparable or cheaper than a lot of convenience snack foods out of packets that we often buy to nourish ourselves. Research has shown the importance of consuming a large variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices to help protect our cells and maintain their health against a variety of cancers and having the potential to change the environment in which a cancer survives. Five foods that can help fight against cancer: Apples – An apple a day can protect against liver, colon and breast cancer. Research has found that the triterpenoid compound in apple peels contributes to its anti-cancer activity.
NATURALLY YOU with Jane Logie
Crucifers (broccoli and cabbage) – can help to prevent breast, bladder, lung and prostate, plus other cancers. This food group has been found to have the ability to neutralise dangerous hormones that contribute to these diseases. Raspberries – Can help protect against colon, breast and prostate cancers. High fibre foods such as raspberries have the ability to bind to and carry out chemicals and hormones that can cause cell damage found in some cancers. Tomatoes – Can help protect against breast, prostate and lung cancers, due to the potent antioxidant lycopene that is released through cooking that has the potential to aid in cell repair and maintenance. Onions – Onions are found among the allium group of vegetables, like garlic, leeks and green onions. Research has found they may have the ability to halt the growth of various cancers. Five herbs/spices that can help fight against cancer: Garlic – Is considered one of the most powerful anti-cancer foods. If consumed daily, it may help prevent against cancers, especially of the stomach, due to the compound organo-sulfer that has anti-carcinogenic and immune strengthening properties, that reportedly have a potent effect on cancer cell growth Ginger – Has the properties gingerol and zingerone, which are considered to be antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and known as protectors against cancer. Black pepper – Has the chemical substance piperine found in the berry. Piperine is considered to have strong antioxidant properties beneficial to preventing some cancers. Cayenne pepper – Contains capsaicin, a
powerful antioxidant. Research has found this chemical has an effect on cancer cells, stopping their growth. Turmeric – The chemical constituent curcumin provides the yellow colour in curry and is considered a powerful anti-inflammatory. Research has found this chemical can stop the blood supply to the cancer’s cells they need to survive. Fresh foods are especially important to our cell biology, function, survival, renewal, repair and maintenance. Buying, preparing and cooking with these food groups can be time-consuming, but we will be a lot healthier in the long term. Including more of a variety of these food groups in your everyday eating is a good measure towards a healthier you. Purchasing fruits and vegetables that are in season help to keep the food bill low. Eating seasonally is a positive step towards incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. It will help you feel fuller for longer, more energised, healthier and help protect against a variety of cancers in the long-term. With the compliments of Jane Logie, a medicinal herbalist, clinical nutritionist and chef from Methven

Tomatoes grown in the garden are appearing in abundance at this time of year, so here is a really quick and easy recipe to utilise the excess tomatoes. Tomatoes are a savoury fruit and great source of nutrition – they carry large amounts of lycopene, which research has found is a potent antioxidant for cancers such as prostate, breast, lungs, stomach and skin. When cooked, the lycopene is more accessible for the body to use as this releases the antioxidants. Tomatoes also contain vitamins A and C which are important for immune system function. Other nutrients held in tomatoes are potassium, iron, calcium and folate. They sound like a powerhouse of nutrition, so let’s get cooking.
Easy homemade tomato sauce
1200g fresh tomatoes 8 cloves of garlic 6T honey (runny), honey dew 1 medium-sized red chilli 2 large red peppers 1T fish sauce (optional) 1t himalayan rock salt 1t white pepper
– Cut cores out of the tomatoes and, leaving skins on, cut into small cubes and place in a medium-sized pot. – Peel and then chop the garlic into very
small dice. – Slice chilli in half, discard the top core, remove the seeds, and chop into very small dice. – Add the remaining ingredients – honey, fish sauce, rock salt and white pepper. – Bring to the boil and let simmer for 1 hour on a low gentle simmer, watching and stirring regularly. – Remove from the stove, let cool and place in an airtight container for use at a later date. Lasts for 7 days. – Freeze cup-size portions in airtight containers for use at a later date.
Steamed mussels with tomato sauce 24 mussels 1C homemade tomato sauce 2T finely-chopped coriander 1C water Pinch rock salt
– Wash, scrub the outside of the mussels, then discard any open mussels, set aside. – Use a large shallow pan with a small amount of water in the bottom, place the mussels in the pan and bring to the boil on a medium heat. – Let all the shells open, discard any that have not opened. Take out and let drain. – Heat the tomato sauce, coriander, water and salt to boiling and set aside. – Place 6-8 mussels in serving bowls with the tomato sauce drizzled over them. – Place 1/2 dozen fresh coriander leaves on top of the dish. – Serves 3-4 people with 6-8 mussels each. – Serve with sushi rice on the side in a small bowl.

Tips for a great Easter Egg Hunt
EASTER
MAD MAMA with DESME DANIELS
When my children were younger, I wanted to do something that not only involved my own children, but my nieces and nephews and friends’ children. So, we decided to organise an annual Easter Egg hunt. A fun way to bring everyone together while watching the kids have some good old-fashioned safe family fun, building memories and a tradition that will last for years to come.
The Easter Bunny's been today ny's r Bun stecl ue Eais The Th in tod ngay endi behi is the dark me He dropped so ey wa er the ngwh alome gsso egIn smelly rather es clu the w llo Fo e e eswis edttothbe u nepu d yoWe p in mu on to jum d lea l wil y the As 's hiddenize It to your pr you ..........

So here are some tips
1. Agree a time and date that suits everyone and lock it in early. 2. Chose a location, depending on the age of the children; at someone’s house is a great location. 3. Decide on the number of clues and the number of children taking part to work out how many eggs and/or chocolate treats you need. You can also use plastic eggs with a treat inside. 4. Make sure you also have a bag or basket for each child to collect their eggs in. 5. Set aside some time to be creative with your clues. Start the kids off with clue 1 which leads to clue 2 and then again for however many you can come up with. 6. Give yourself plenty of time to hide the clues with the correct number of treats at each location. 7. Make sure the adults supervise and accompany the children to iron out any small differences that may happen on the way. 8. Have spares – just in case something goes wrong and one or two get lost on the way.

Cute breakfast ideas for kids
EASTER
Cress heads – –

2 eggs – emptied with shells intact 2t cress seeds 2 cotton wool balls Felt-tip pens or acrylic paints Carefully remove the tops from the eggs, leaving the bottom two-thirds of the shells intact. Empty the shells (eat the eggs – yummy!), then carefully wash the shell out. Decorate the shells with pens or paint, then leave them to dry. Dip the cotton wool balls in a little water, squeezing out any excess. Place one ball inside each shell, then sprinkle cress seeds onto each one. Sit the filled shells in eggcups and leave in a dry, well-lit place for a week – a windowsill is perfect. Your cress will start to grow within a few days, perfect for making egg and cress sarnies!
Breakfast ideas
Use the eggs to make a cute breakfast for the kids, using currants, rosemary or spring onions and mini carrots, or arrange pancakes to make an Easter bunny.

CC can be a bit confusing at times. Is my injury covered? Why is the physio not free anymore? Do I need a referral from a GP? Let’s clear up the confusion and answer these questions and more. What does ACC cover? ACC covers any injury that you can identify when and where it happened. For a claim to be covered you need to be able to state what you were doing when the pain began. For example, “lifted a heavy bag and felt pain in back”. Most physical injuries are covered if they’re caused by: • An accident • A condition that comes on gradually because of your work (gradual process) • A medical treatment It needs to be clarified though that even though ACC covers occupational overuse injuries, it does not cover overuse injuries from non-work activities such as over-doing your new gym routine or building up too fast for the Queenstown marathon, so
ACC confusing?
PHYSIO LAID BARE with SHAUN CLARK
you can’t just put “running” as your mechanism of injury (this happens a lot)! Do I need a doctor’s referral to claim ACC? No, all the required paperwork can be filled out at a physiotherapy clinic unless it is a work-related overuse injury. If it is a gradual-onset work-related pain, it does need to go through the GP first and for all other things, we can sort it out. Does the injury need to be sport or work related? As mentioned above, ACC covers anything that you can identify the cause of. It covers everyone whether you live here or are on holiday and, while ACC does cover sport and work-related accidents, you can also claim for injuries that occurred at home or in your everyday life. For example, lifting your children, chang-
ing a light bulb, tripping over the dog or even getting intimate! Is ACC treatment free? ACC treatment was never technically free, it was just fully funded by ACC. This changed about 10 years ago and so if you have an approved ACC claim, ACC now funds part of the consultation fee and this leaves a surcharge for you to pay to cover the rest. The surcharge varies between clinics, levels of expertise and appointment types. ACC is there to cover you when you are injured and not just for treatment, but time off work, help at home and much more, so make sure to check out the ACC website for heaps more info if needed or go talk to your local physio clinic. Shaun Clark is principal physio and director at PhysioSteps Ashburton and Selwyn and has experience at the Commonwealth Games and World Rugby 7s. The team are experts in musculoskeletal pain and injury rehab.

Selling district’s charms to the world O
ne week ago Kyle Mulinder knew nothing about the Ashburton District; today he’s its greatest advocate as a place to visit, stay and experience. Over the past week he’s been filming, videoing and photographing activities, scenery and attractions from the sea to the mountains as part of his challenge to capture the best of what we have, condensing it into just two minutes of mind-blowing images. What Kyle hadn’t counted on was finding a district that had everything the rest of New Zealand had and more. “It’s bloody eye-opening. There’s a lot more going on than you think. It was an awesome surprise. It’s a totally hidden gem,” he said. Over six days he filmed and snapped 600 gigabytes worth of data. That was the easy part. continued over page

From P35 “The next bit’s the part no-one wants to know about, making one second of video from one hour’s worth of work.” He knows that thousands of amazing images will be discarded along the way, but when it takes just three seconds to engage or lose a viewer, you know the end product has to be pretty incredible, Kyle said. And he also knows that what he’s captured from his time in Mid Canterbury will be the district’s best possible marketing tool. “It’s like doing a giant jigsaw puzzle. You put the outside pieces in then the blue sky is done and then you can’t sleep because it all gets pretty exciting when you do the hard yards of completing the puzzle. It’s heartbreaking that some of this gold will never see the light of day but you end up with the best of the best.” A key element of the completed video is finding the right music and he trawls through countless music libraries to find the perfect mood music to complement it.

You have just a few seconds to hook a viewer, to get them to watch a video through to the end and that end, preferably should come in not much over a minute, he said.
Kyle’s career was an accidental one, it was as far off the radar for the boy from Norsewood as it’s possible to get. “As a kid I just played war, rode motorbikes – fast – and wanted to go into the
army to blow stuff up. When I was 16 I was definitely not going in the right direction, but then I went on the Spirit of Adventure and that was a turning point in my life.” continued over page

From P37 Until then he thought his only job option was the local freezing works. “It’s hard to break out of that cycle but after that trip my life changed.” He started working in adventure tourism in Nelson, went overseas, worked as a rough guide in Canada and while he was flat broke, says he had the best time of his life. Along the way he started recording his travels and adventures, posting these on social media. “I wanted to help travellers, to show them around New Zealand so I created an online guide to New Zealand. and it’s just evolved from there. I’ve got my dream job.” From that point his company Bare Kiwi was born, named over a few beers with mates. It might have started with social media, but it’s a myth that posting good stuff on social media makes money, Kyle said. “Young kids put stuff up for free. I had a video that went viral showing me being slapped in the face by an octopus but I didn’t make any money from it.” He reckons it takes about 1 million views to make $10. It’s taken him years to build his social media following, but today it’s huge. That platform is constantly changing, constantly evolving and that’s what his business does to stay ahead. But along the way he stays true to his belief in reality rather than fantasy. “My photos show travel in an honest and trustworthy way.” That honest approach to photography means Kyle, his body and his gear, are not for sale. “I’m not a billboard. I get contacted by brands, but I say no almost 100 per cent of the time. I’ll only work with a brand where I like the story they have to tell.” His work is largely with organisations such as Experience Mid Canterbury across New Zealand and overseas. He’s employed to tell their story. Kyle doesn’t travel with a large or expensive film kit. It’s usually a Go-Pro, a selfie stick, a phone and a camera. Most of the Ashburton District’s images were captured on his Go-Pro Today he juggles his Bare Kiwi business

with work as a kayak guide in the Abel Tasman National Park and when he’s working on film contracts, wife Lisa has the job of managing his bookings and his life. No matter where he travels, the Abel Tasman is the place of his heart, the place he calls home. He’s constantly juggling contracts, but when he’s on a job, he’s there 110 per cent, Kyle said. “I have to be 100 per cent focused on what I’m doing, you have to do that to be creative. The people I meet give me the passion for what their place is like and if I absorb that passion I can tell their story,” he said. He prefers to work with the people who have commissioned him, the people with the intimate knowledge of their patch. If they’re not there he says it’s difficult to
capture their passion through the lens. It was important to tell a district’s story in a simple way, in a way that was not overthought, he said. “You don’t need all the top gear, you just need to understand what you’re shooting. It’s important I understand this so I can tell the story.” Arriving in the Ashburton District was like arriving in a new and unknown world, Kyle said. “What a destination. There is so much variation, so much change, so much of your landscape isn’t ‘normal’ because of the variety in such a small space.” The images and videos Kyle captured will be a key marketing tool for Experience Mid Canterbury and will be shown for the first time at this year’s travel industry show, Trenz, in Rotorua next month.

Secrets to a luscious, lovely lawn T
he hot summer months can take their toll on your lawn, leaving it a little ravaged and in desperate need of care. Autumn and spring are typically the best times to tackle any lawn problems and give it a little TLC to bring it back to life. This is because the soil is warm and there is adequate rainfall to aid even germination of the grass seed. A uniform green healthy lawn is something many people strive for and the secret comes down to fertilising regularly and adequately with lawn fertiliser, in conjunction with regular watering. Established lawns should be fertilised with good quality lawn fertiliser at three to four-weekly intervals, typically from March until the end of April. Fertiliser lowers the pH of the soil which simply means the grass grows better than the weeds! It is absolutely critical that the lawn is well watered after each application. In spring, you can begin fertilising again from October until Christmas (avoiding the hot summer months when lawns are
stressed due to the heat). If you have moss in your lawn after winter, try spreading iron sulphate on to the area and watering it in. This is quite a common practice to treat moss and it will also darken the colour of your lawn. If you are considering laying a new lawn, it’s important to choose the right grass that will suit your lawn’s function and soil type. In terms of function, consider things like, do you have pets? Will children play on it? Will it be used as a thoroughfare or just admired? Your soil type also plays a major part; is it free draining or waterlogged? You may need to improve the drainage first. You may also need to add in some gypsum to help improve this, and when mowing your lawn, it’s best to catch your clippings and remove them. To create an attractive durable lawn all-year round it’s a good idea to mix grass seeds, as some do well in summer and others do well in winter. Your local garden centre can give some
advice on the type of grass that suits your needs, soil and climate. In large areas where grass is either non-existent or poor quality; top soil should be spread and new lawn seed sown. Sprinkle the seed in an even pattern, walking away from the starting point so you are not standing on the seed. Apply grass seed to the surface of the soil, do not cover with top soil as the seed is very fine and will not germinate well if covered. Grass seed should germinate (depending on soil temperatures and moisture) seven to 10 days after sowing. When the newly-emerged grass has reached 80mm high, the first cut can be made. With successive cuts, you can lower the mower’s setting to eventually reach the grass height you desire. Regardless of which task you embark on, it’s essential to maintain constant soil moisture so the new seeds germinate and the lawn in general greens up and becomes healthier overall.

The tasty tamarillo
Dorothy Knight is this month’s winner with the following question: I have a tamarillo plant growing in a pot. The plant is growing well, but needs repotting very soon. At this stage it is growing in a warm house in a glass enclosure. Can tamarillos be grown outside in Mid Canterbury, Rakaia? When is the best time to repot? Cultivating a tamarillo successfully in Ashburton will require the plant to be inside a glasshouse during the winter months as they are frost-tender. Repot the plant in late winter/early spring, just before the tamarillo bursts into new growth. Plant into the biggest pot or planter you can find to encourage an extensive root system. As tamarillos tend to grow quite tall on a single stem, you may need to cut the stem at around 1 metre to encourage a more branching habit. Remember, tamarillos are not the easiest of fruits to grow and can be very susceptible to some nasty mildews during the summer months. Repot with fresh container mix and fertilise lightly with a fruit fertiliser at 4-6-week intervals from spring into early summer. Keep the plant moist but do not over water as tamarillos do not like wet feet.

Walking the great ocean road DESTINATION with Bronwyn
A popular day trip from Melbourne is to do the Great Ocean Road and see the Twelve Apostles, in March I decided that I would take the slower more scenic trip and Walk the Great Ocean Road. The walk that I decided to do was six days and 105kms long. (There is an option for a long weekend option but this doesn’t offer pick up from Melbourne). Our walk started in Apollo Bay and finished at the Twelve Apostles with the shortest Day 9km and the longest 25km. With the walk you get to see many inaccessible and remote parts of the coast which you won’t see from the road. The Scenery was absolutely stunning, over the six days we walked through a number of different habitats from manna Gum trees where we were fortunate to see koala’s in the wild on three days, to mountain ash forests, grass trees and of course beautiful golden sand beaches. Not only is this part of Australia beautiful, but it also has a rich history. At the Cape Otway Lightstation we learned not only about how life was at a remote Lightstation, but also about its war history. Along the walk we also learnt about the hundreds of shipwrecks that have

occurred along the coastline (hence the reason a lightstation is required).
Highlights of the trip
• Beautiful scenery • Seeing koalas in the wild • Seeing the world famous 12 Apostle. Hint if self-driving stay at Port Campbell and then visit early in the morning before all the tour buses arrive. • Our interpretive walk with a local Indigenous historian who taught us how to live off the land and the aboriginal history of the area. • The amazing people I met on our walk from the fantastic guides who kept us motivated in the challenging parts and

informed us of what we were seeing, to the six other women on my trip. • The sense of achievement of completing the walk (with only one blister). To do this walk you will need a moderate level of fitness. I admit I didn’t realise how hilly it would be. I suppose a sign of a good holiday is would I go back, the answer is yes, and would I do another walking holiday – definitely, the only question is where?. If you would like to hear more about the walk or see more pictures feel free to pop into the office and see me. Or if you are interested in an active holiday anywhere in the world also pop in and see the options that we have available for you.

WINTER
Don’t want the flu? Get immunised GPs around the country are urging residents to be immunised against the flu this winter as the 2019 vaccine is rolled out across the country. At the Tinwald Medical Centre recently, Peter Sheate said there was a simple reason for him being one of the first to be vaccinated this year. “I don’t want the flu,” the 80-year-old said. GP spokesperson for the district, Eti Avnit, echoed Health Minister David Clark’s advice to get immunised. She herself was immunised against the flu at her practice recently. She said the death rate from flu last year in New Zealand remained relatively low compared to outbreaks overseas and this was thanks to people getting immunised. Clark said around 400 New Zealanders die each year from the disease and many more needed hospital treatment. The influenza immunisation programme began a little later this year, on April 1, to ensure that the vaccine continued to provide protection through to the peak of the flu season, usually in late winter. The vaccine will protect against four strains, including updated strains of influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B. Clark said he was one of more than a million who would take up the vaccine this year.
• • • • •
The campaign was particularly focusing on people aged 65 and older. “Even fit and healthy people can get seriously ill from the flu, and for older people, a serious case can have a long-lasting impact on their quality of life and independence.”
The flu vaccine is free to:
• Those aged 65 and older. • Pregnant women. • People with chronic or serious health

Top tips for winter driving
We’ve all noticed the drop in temperature over the past few weeks – particularly here locally – and it’s important for us to be aware of the changing conditions when driving. We know there’s less sunlight during winter, therefore it’s crucial for drivers to make sure that they can be seen – especially on those grey, dark, winter days. But this is just one factor that we need to consider during the cold months ahead. AA have shared their top tips for ensuring the best for you and your car through the colder months to help keep you safe on New Zealand’s wet, frosty roads this winter.
• Check the weather forecast before you hit the road. • Check your car’s water, oil and wiperblades before starting a long drive. • Keep your windows clean (inside and out) and allow an extra few minutes to fully de-mist your windscreen before driving. • Clear your entire windscreen of any frost or ice with a scraper or a bank card before you drive anywhere – don’t use hot water as you run the risk of cracking the glass. • If you have a choice, don’t drive in snowy or icy conditions or in heavy rain. • Drive to the conditions.
WINTER
• Turn on your lights if the light is dim or it is raining. • Increase your following distance and adjust your speed to the conditions. • For those down south, take extra care during low sun which can cause sunstrike and be prepared with a clean windscreen. • Don’t drive when you are tired and try to take a short break after two hours of driving. • Make sure you’ve got all you need should you break down. Night-time Still miracle going strong
Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying. While you sleep, your body heals and regenerates the day’s damage. Skin cell production can actually double between 11pm and 4am! During the night while your skin’s activity increases, its permeability does too. Your temperature is higher, so your skin is more receptive to the skincare products you apply. This permeability also means water loss is at its highest, and your skin can become more susceptible to damage. If your skin often feels drier or tight in the morning, the use of a natural overnight mask can help prevent this hydration loss and lock in the moisture that is essential for soft and radiant skin.
