From farmland to commercial success Once a barren block of land, playing home to a few hundred sheep, the Ashburton Business Estate is now a buzzing hive of activity at the heart of the Ashburton District. The Ashburton Business Estate is a fully serviced 80 hectare commercial and industrial development located northeast of the Ashburton town boundary. The estate was developed by the Ashburton District Council back in 2006 to provide a well-planned and serviced development option for businesses looking to come to the district and for local businesses looking to expend their operations. With enterprises across a range of industries, our business community reflects the region’s strong, proud heritage founded on industry and agribusiness, as well as forward thinking investment and innovation.
“
The area ... is starting to become a focal point for anyone looking for a new location to relocate
A long-term sustainable development, the Ashburton Business Estate supports the potential of our fast growing and progressive district – and underscores our commitment to make that vision a reality. Business continues to flow into the area with new buildings and establishments rapidly relocating into the now business stronghold and calling the area home. With up to 40 businesses now calling the Business Estate home, the area is one of the fastest growing parts of the region and is starting to become a focal point for anyone
looking for a new location to relocate their business to. Ashburton District Council continues to look to further enhance the area with plans in place for a new look café to service the needs of the businesses currently holding place in the estate as well as the potential for more and more lots to be filled by both locally owned and nationally operated organisations. The Ashburton Business Estate was opened in April 2011 by then Prime Minister John Key. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Putting bees to work for farmers Thirty per cent of the world’s food crops are pollinated by bees, including clover pasture, which has been the backbone of the New Zealand agricultural sector for generations. Winter is a particularly difficult time for bees due to poor weather and a lack of available nectar. To counteract this, wintering hives is essential. Hives are separated into smaller stacks and placed across the region to ensure there is enough local nectar for the colony to survive. Midlands is currently seeking wintering sites to place beehives, please contact us for more details. Midlands is dedicated to the service of bees and beehives, with the aim of setting new standards of excellence in pollination services within New Zealand. With a strong focus on the pollination of crops including carrot, canola, radish, clover and brassicas, experienced beekeepers strategically place hives on farms all over the Canterbury region to maximise crop yields. Midlands provides competitive
crop pollination prices and will even pollinate clover crops at no cost. Biosecurity and health and safety are of the utmost importance to our operation, we clean and disinfect wheels, wheel arches and boots before entering a farm with cattle. If entering an identified mycoplasma bovis
infected farm, we will clean, water blast and disinfect our truck before and after entering. We will always leave your site as we found it, so you don’t need to worry about finding rubbish or gates left open. Innovation and research helps us stay ahead of new pests and diseases,
so you can be assured we are doing everything we can to improve hive strength and pollination results. For more information about the services we provide, please contact our field operations manager, Matt McCully matt.mccully@midlands. co.nz or 027 839 5390.

Rural Transport continues to expand Mid Canterbury’s Rural Transport Limited is continuing to expand at its base near the Ashburton Business estate. The company’s five-hectare block on Northpark Road purchased in 2006, has ensured there has been plenty of space for its growing enterprise. Rural Transport Limited opened at the site in 2014. The facility includes a 560 square metre office block, and a warehouse that has recently been increased in size to accommodate the tenants that now occupy the premises. Seven bulk grain storage silos are located on the property with storage hired to several local companies. General manager Jim Crouchley said the new location had enabled the company to be part of the advantages the business estate offered. “We are very pleased to be in this location and take benefit from the development in the area,” Crouchley said. The wider green-space feel of the business estate area provided a
handsome backdrop to the company’s headquarters. The site was highly accessible and located within minutes of the rural hub of Ashburton, just off State Highway 1. “The site has certainly allowed for our company’s growth” Crouchley also said. The Ashburton facility is the hub for the company’s freight activities, which services rural clients and transports around the South
Island. Rural Transport, which also has branch depots at Kurow, Fairlie and Waimate, offers commercial storage in its silos and warehouse at the site. Rural Transport has strong historical ties to the Ashburton area as it evolved from a transport heritage stretching back more than eight decades.
