Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel might be keen to see the Ashburton District Council develop an international relations policy, but yesterday she struggled to get support for the idea from her councillors. At a bylaw and policy sub-committee meeting Favel made a pitch for the development of an international relations policy that would establish a framework around expenditure and expectations for visits and delegations. This would include sister cities. She also wanted a new policy developed around art and culture. “At the moment on your behalf I happily receive international groups, but I have no direction from councillors

[about] what you want to do with these groups,” she said. Stuart Wilson’s reaction was swift and clear. “Forget about international relations policies, forget about arts and culture policies, we don’t need either,” he said. Other councils have policies and budgets around international relations, but Ashburton does not. Key in those policies were issues that would foster relationships that would have economic and cultural benefits, Favel said. “As your representative I have little direction from councillors as to what you’re hoping to achieve in those areas.” Wilson wasn’t convinced. “We’re a district of 33,000 people. Let the government deal with international

relations. Are our ratepayers going to want to spend money on international relations? I think the overseas visiting thing is being overdone at the moment. You talk about trade, but it’s not council trading with China, it’s businesses trading with China. We’re a pipsqueak, a small rural town and we’re looking way above our station,” he said. Favel was also keen to see an arts and culture policy developed. Currently it gives about $600,000 to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and the Ashburton Art Gallery with little direction on how this should be spent.

■ DOMAIN PADDLING POOL

Pool’s fence falls short of rules By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton could be looking at a long, hot summer, but bureaucratic red tape may see one of the town’s most popular swimming pools off-limits. The Ashburton Domain’s Walnut Avenue paddling pool is a big drawcard for families on hot days, but tough pool fencing regulations mean the pool cannot open

until a new pool fence is built. And that has Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin gritting his teeth in frustration. The pool and its safety fence have been unchallenged for years, but now its compliance is in question. “The limit is 400mm of water, anything above that needs a higher fence around it and this one

needs to be replaced,” he said. He knows the timing is way off for the community and said the pool will open for the summer but the new fence has to be erected first. “It’s the interpretation of the law and we’ll be getting on to this as quickly as we can.” The height discrepancy was picked up during a health and safety audit on council pools and

compliance was not optional, Askin said. The paddling pool has just received its pre-summer paint spruce up and is closed to allow the paint work to harden. He’s anticipating work on the replacement fence will start shortly. Under the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act, a pool that has the capability of water depth greater than 400mm (16 inches) is re-

■ HYPE YOUTH HEALTH CENTRE

Old hand takes over the helm at Hype By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Hype Youth Health Centre’s new co-ordinator is ready to apply her passion for working with young people to a proactive role at the helm. Sheree Kershaw has just stepped up to replace Janet Hadley as co-ordinator, after teaching at the centre for some time. The youth centre opened its doors nearly 10 years ago and offers free, confidential healthcare, information, advice and advocacy for locals between 12 and 24 years of age. A wide range of support is on offer for youth dealing with mental, social, physical and sexual issues, as well as offering legal advice, career advice, and even health provisions like pregnancy tests, condoms and sanitary supplies. “It’s working with youth in a context I like,” Kershaw said. “I like that it gives young people the opportunity to change their own life and make decisions … it’s proactive, not like working at the bottom of the cliff and seeing [the consequences].” The service also offers “hook ups” with a range of other agencies like Work and Income, drug

and alcohol services, Community Law, public health nurses and sexual health clinics. Hadley said that since opening, the centre has seen growing numbers of visitors almost

every year, with the exception of a small lull when they shifted to new premises on Burnett Street. Hadley will essentially swap jobs with Kershaw – now working to teach courses at the cen-

tre such as those in building self-esteem. “The people here have been amazing,” Hadley said. “It’s an extremely rewarding job.”

quired to be fenced in accordance with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act. This includes blow-up and temporary pools. All pools, no matter when they were installed, must comply with the act. The height of the pool fence must be no less than 1.2 metres and the gap under the fence and gate less than 100mm and the gaps between vertical cladding less than 100mm.

Is overseas trade council’s business? From P1 For either policy to be developed councillors would need to give staff clear directions on what they should contain, council community relations manager Vincie Billante said. “Tell us what you want from us and we’ll be happy to provide. We already have service level agreements with the event centre and art gallery, and they specify council’s expectations, but with international relations, we don’t have internal resources around this. “If you want a policy, who will action it and who will do the work?” Before he made a decision, Russell Ellis said he wanted more details and suggested more work needed to be done around the money that might be put into this, the benefits and what could be achieved. Councillors opted to hold off deciding on developing either policy until they had more information on the benefits and possible costs.

■ MOVEMBER

Growing the mo, but not for show

Movember has never been more fun for 17 entrants including those pictured. They each donated $10 at the beginning of the month for the privilege of growing some very impressive facial hair. Crossroads in the Square Bar and Restaurant in Methven has been running the initiative, and every Wednesday night the participants pop into the bar for a free beer courtesy of sponsor Independent Liquor, and get their photo taken. The public will judge the best moustache based on the photos and tonight there will be a prizegiving. Money raised from the participants’ initial donations and other contributions has so far reached more than $700, which will go to a male-orientated charity chosen by the winner. PHOTO SUSAN SANDYS

We’re too quick to condemn DOC Y

esterday morning the Environmental Protection Authority delivered a warning that oozed with irony in the Guardian newsroom. With a certain recent Facebook post ringing in my memory I read everything I already knew: “Science denial and scepticism about the role of experts is alive and well in New Zealand”. According to the watchdog organisation, our country has a burgeoning number of people with no trust in science, experts, hasty to rally against what they perceive as detrimental environmental change – and make it difficult for authority figures and institutions to explain their decisions. Where can you find many of these sceptics? On an Ashburton Guardian Fa-

Katie Todd

REPORTER

cebook page, populating a post entitled “POISON WARNING: RAKAIA RIVER”. In what the EPA describe as “the unmoderated milieu of the internet”, or what I more specifically identify as the emotional pressure cooker of a Facebook comment thread, literally hundreds of examples of scepticism have emerged. DOC have been accused of “murder”, “treason” and “evil, barbaric” behaviour, and dubbed all sorts of other colourful names

that have rapidly expanded the obscenity department of my vocabulary. The fuss concerns population control measures planned to help manage a flock of blackbacked gulls on the Rakaia River. DOC intend to hand feed these birds poisonous alphachoralose bread baits, and many locals intend to shove those bread baits straight back down the DOC officers’ throats. But DOC are carrying out the operation with the health of other, more threatened birds in mind, namely, the black-billed gulls, wrybills, banded dotterels and black-fronted terns which rely on the riverbed to breed and survive. Unlike the black-backed gulls these birds are all endemic, threatened species. But to the

black-backed gulls, who can thrive anywhere in huge quantities, the chicks and eggs of these birds make an extra tasty treat. DOC have also advised the operation will be constantly monitored to ensure no secondary poisoning occurs, and carried out over a very short time in specific locations. Now once people were alerted to the reality, it was incredible how fast the fury dissipated. The anti-DOC bandwagon came to a grinding halt and many had to swallow their pride and concede that they’d muddled up the species names (oh it’s black backed, not black-billed!). Now we’ve seen the same thing mirrored on other occasions. DOC have faced substantial critique for removing the nice shady wilding pines by Mid

Canterbury’s lakes to help stop biodiversity. Many other organisations are also routinely hung, drawn and thoroughly quartered over (dare I say it) 1080 distribution. As valiant as it is to crack your knuckles, whip out your keyboard and express your passion for the environment, there are two things I urge you to keep in mind. Firstly, not all species can live in harmony together – not when we’re protecting our environment, and certainly not when there’s a meddling, proliferating human population on the scene. Secondly, our scientists might, just might know a little more about science than the average local, and they also very likely share your interest in looking after our little country. Please, have faith.

■ ASHBURTON RIVERBED

In brief

Breeding birds under threat By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

They might have been granted a $10,000 predator control boost and a major breeding ground cleanup, but an ugly threat is still plaguing our local endangered nesting birds, say conservationists. Rogue four-wheel-drives on the riverbed can instantly crush the eggs and chicks of riverdwelling wrybills, black-fronted terns, black-billed gulls and dotterels – but it appears the message isn’t being clearly enough enforced. The warning follows an incident in which the chick and unhatched egg of two nesting birds were crushed under a 4WD on the Ashley River. In the Ashburton River earlier this week, Forest and Bird chairperson Edith Smith said she was on her way to check on the flock of black-billed gulls when she spotted four-wheel-drive tracks veering right near their nesting area. “We’re the only country in the world to have these species,” said Braided River Aid manager Sonny Whitelaw. “Yet ironically, we’re also one of the only countries in the world where you can often drive a fourwheel-drive along the riverbed.” Whitelaw said it was important for people to remember the reality “that you can be prosecuted”, for killing protected species, and

Families of people who died in the collapsed CTV Building in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake say they will not give up despite a police decision not to prosecute anyone for manslaughter. Mary Anne Jackson, a receptionist in the building who ran outside when the quake hit, said she was “gutted” by the decision not to prosecute the building owner. “I think the families won’t let it lie,” she said. Justice Minister Andrew Little said the news was very hard on the families of the 115 victims. Opposition leader Bill English said he would be willing to work with the Government to find a solution to what he described as a “largescale tragedy” that should be subject to legal liability. - NZME

Death not suspicious

Nesting birds like the wrybill blend easily with the riverbeds at this time of year – prompting fresh calls for four-wheel-drives to steer clear. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN face up to $100,000 in fines or two years’ jail time under the Wildlife Act 1953. However, Mid Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club president Marcus Ewart said he wasn’t aware of a lot in place to ensure people stay off the riverbed at nesting times, other than signage. “Our club’s got a longstanding arrangement with ECan not to go there during breeding times-

so it’s just policy for us not to go there,” he said “I think there’s signs and barriers advising people of the nesting birds – but I don’t believe it to be enforced.” He said it was likely individuals who “have a few beers” and then head down to the river with their four-wheel-drives who are most oblivious to the nesting birds, and the cause of most problems.

Whitelaw said the loss of native birds was harmful for everyone in New Zealand “even those farmers who are exporting and rely on New Zealand’s clean, green image”. “And if we don’t do something soon they’re going to be gone … I mean it’s emotionally damaging watching these little birds trying their hearts out, and then being run over.”

■ RAKAIA TOY LIBRARY

Christmas trail plan for Rakaia fundraiser The Rakaia Toy Library is set to try something a little bit different this year for a fundraiser. In December they will hold their first ever Christmas Trail which will see entrants making their way around the streets of Rakaia identifying Christmas characters that are on display at homes and in shop windows. Toy Library committee mem-

CTV collapse decision

ber, Kathryn Green said that the idea was based loosely on the popular Methven Scarecrow Trail which has been running for a number of years. “It is similar to the Methven Scarecrow Trail, but with a bit of a Christmas flavour to it,” Green said. The event will be held from December 9, through to Decem-

ber 20 with entry forms costing $5 from the 4 Square Supermarket on Railway Terrace. The toy library has received prizes from sponsors with all entries going in the draw for prizes and every correct entry also in with a chance of winning. “We have had some great support, people have been very generous, and we have some awe-

some prizes up for grabs.” However, the search is still on for more people who are willing to display something for the trail on their property or in their business. There is a prize for thev best display around the township. Anyone who wishes to enter a display can contact Green on 0275079957.

The death of a Russian man in a Christchurch park on Wednesday morning has been referred to the Coroner. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart said Police are not treating the death as suspicious. “There are no suspicious circumstances, and the death of the 38-year-old Russian man, has been referred to the Coroner. “Police have completed the examination of the scene where a man’s body was found in Edmonds Park in Christchurch yesterday morning,” Stewart said. - NZME

Swimmer rescued A person who went missing at sea in the Manawatu has been rescued. Police were called to the incident around 4.20pm yesterday after a person swimming at Tangimoana Beach had gone missing. A police spokeswoman said that two Coastguard jet skis and a pontoon boat as well as a rescue helicopter were deployed. The helicopter found the person in the water and was rescued. - NZME

■ ASHBURTON WEATHER

Mayor keen on links with China

Temperatures to stay high for longer

BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

There are business and tourism opportunities between Ashburton and China just waiting to be explored says Ashburton mayor Donna Favel. She is just back from an eightday visit to China that saw her attend an international enterprise conference, make a number of presentations on the Ashburton District and secure dozens of contacts that could translate into business opportunities. Favel was part of a trade delegation that included Australians and New Zealanders and said it provided a good opportunity for her to gain a deeper understanding of just how important China will become in Ashburton and New Zealand’s economy future. While large cities in China were now First World, towns and rural areas were still Third World and the Chinese were keen to see these areas develop. They wanted help from countries with agricultural expertise, she said. “One of the areas they were very keen on was for people with agricultural knowledge in our district to go over and help them; they’re wanting help from us.” The Chinese were also happy to help New Zealand projects with advice as a visit to an area with hot springs showed. “In the hot springs area I visited they said they’d be happy to offer advice and support to our development in Methven. Now it’s about following that opportunity up,” she said. Gore’s mayor Tracy Hicks was also part of the delegation and Favel said the relationship his community had already built with a Chinese company was a good example of how important personal contacts were. During the visit a commitment

Mayor Donna Favel is keen to forge strong links with China. was made by that company to establish a second business deal with Gore. While the Ashburton District’s employee shortage is long running and is mirrored in many parts of New Zealand, Favel said she was surprised to see China faced a similar problem. “It seems this problem is global. Their shortage goes back to the one-child policy and they’re now importing labour from India.” This weekend Favel will attend the New Zealand-China Mayoral Forum in Wellington where she hopes to begin converting some of the 80 points of contacts she made into tangible opportunities. The mercury soared over the 30 degree mark at some Mid Canterbury weather stations yesterday. While parts of the North Island battled rain, lightning and thunderstorms, Ashburton locals celebrated clear skies and toasty temperatures for another day in a long, settled weather cycle. Metservice said a persistent ridge of high pressure was facilitating heatwave-like conditions for some parts of the South Island, and were warning earlier this week that persistent warmth will be noticeable everywhere. MetService Meteorologist Hannah Moes said a rainfall pattern was also targeting inland areas across the country and leaving coastal areas bone dry. “The pattern is similar for each day this week,” she said. “Settled conditions remain for many places under a persistent ridge of high pressure, with little change from day to day.”

According to the Metservice, weather throughout November 2017 has had a notably very dry nature – the polar opposite to what forecasters were concluding three months ago. MetService meteorologist Andy Best said Christchurch Airport has had the driest November on record since 1943, with just 1.4mm of rain recorded this month. NIWA are also predicting temperatures to continue on the up for the next five days, reaching 29 degrees on Monday despite all-day cloud cover. A scorcher of a weekend is on the cards for those attending the Santa parade, with the sun set to shine down and temperatures set to surge up to the 30 degree mark. NIWA have also released their long-term forecast for the summer months, advising that the whole country will be treated to above-average temperatures. The NIWA long-term forecast also warns that lower than average river flows and soil temperatures are likely in the east of the South Island.

ing the forum. Reflecting on her visit, Favel said she had been inspired by the opportunities that were out there; the key was capturing those opportunities, she said. “Everyone wants to woo China, they all want to do things with China but we have what they need.” Doing business with the Chinese could mean a rethink for Ashburton of the way they hosted these visitors, Favel said. “The put on a huge banquet, we put on a cup of tea and a biscuit. I’m not saying we need to do what they do but we could definitely be a little more ceremonial.” Her trip was at the invitation of a Chinese trade delegation and was not ratepayer funded.

Vote for your favourite float Attendees of this weekend’s Mid Canterbury Santa Parade will get the chance to vote for their favourite float of the day. The Ashburton App, Mid Canterbury Hokonui and Hyundai have combined forces to produce two prizes for the day that will be voted for by the people lining the streets to enjoy the parade which begins tomorrow at 12.30pm. Previously judging of the best educational float has been undertaken by Hokonui’s Carol Johns, but this year she wanted to get the community involved in the process. Partnering with the Ashburton App has allowed the community to take the lead and decide on the winners of two different categories. The Ashburton App – People’s Choice category will carry a prize of $250 and the Hokonui Best Educational Float will carry a prize of $500. The Ashburton Guardian controls the Ashburton App and its general manager Desme Daniels said being part of the promotion was a great opportunity. “For us to work alongside Carol and help the community take ownership of such a great event is a wonderful opportunity,” she said. “Carol has put a lot of hard work and effort into organising the event so it makes sense for that workload to be lightened and for us to reach out to the community to let them decide who they feel deserves to win.” The voting process following the parade will be simple with photos of all participating entrants being uploaded to the Ashburton App. Those who wish to vote will have to head to, or download the Ashburton App and access the Christmas button where they will find the voting section and vote for who they think deserves to win. The floats with the most votes will be the winners. This year’s parade is set to boast more floats than ever and with other exciting events happening at the parade, the day is sure to be a family day that should not be missed.

Trump tweets condemned Stoking the same anti-Islam sentiments he fanned on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump yesterday retweeted a string of inflammatory videos from a fringe British political group purporting to show violence being committed by Muslims. The tweets drew a sharp condemnation from British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office, which said it was “wrong for the president to have done this”. May spokesman James Slack said the far-right Britain First group seeks to divide through its use of “hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions.” Brushing off the criticism in another tweet, Trump said May instead of focusing on him should “focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom”. Trump had turned away from taxes, North Korea and other issues facing his administration to share the three videos tweeted by Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of the British group. It was not clear what drew him to the videos, though one had been shared by conservative

It’s also believed the duo have come to an agreement over custody of their daughter Madison, 6, and have vowed to destroy any “compromising videos” from their relationship. War chief dies after drinking poison in court A Bosnian-Croat war chief has died after downing poison during his war crimes trial at The Hague, the Croatian Prime Minister has confirmed. Slobodan Praljak yelled, “I am not a war criminal!” and drank a dark liquid from a small bottle seconds after losing his appeal against a 20year prison sentence at the International Criminal Tribunal, in the Netherlands. “I just drank poison,” he added. “I am not a war criminal. I oppose this conviction.” Praljak, 72, is one of six Cro-

atian politicians sentenced to jail for their involvement in a campaign to drive Muslims out of a would-be Bosnian Croat mini-state in Bosnia in the early 1990s. His lawyer shouted out “my client has taken poison” before judge Carmel Agius suspended the hearing and the courtroom was closed. Moments later ambulance crews arrived at the scene and a helicopter began hovering overhead. Several emergency rescue workers rushed into the build-

ing carrying equipment in backpacks, while court officials called for calm. Croatia’s state-run TV service later said he died in hospital in the Netherlands, a statement which was later confirmed by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who offered condolences to his family. Plenkovic said at a press conference that “we have all unfortunately witnessed his act by which he took his own life”. “His act mostly speaks about a deep moral injustice towards

TV host Lauer fired NBC News has fired Matt Lauer over “inappropriate sexual behaviour,” making the Today show star the latest high-profile man to become embroiled in workplace harassment allegations. In a staff memo, NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said the network received “a detailed” complaint about Lauer on Monday night. “It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.” Lack added: “While it is the first complaint about his behaviour in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.” - NZME

Is it better to buy or sell first? While buying your first home can be a nerve-wracking experience, buying your second (or third) isn’t much easier. First home buyers may face a whole bunch of barriers, but the stakes can feel pretty high for people who are looking to upsize, downsize or just move house due to family circumstances or job changes.

Mortgage rates

5.15

Buying first makes sense in lots of ways, particularly if your search area is very defined. If a property that ticks all the boxes comes on the market it can be hard to resist the pull of putting an offer on it. If you decide to go for it, you’ll need good financial advice and nerves of steel. If your offer is accepted you may find yourself in the position of owning two properties – and having to service their respective mortgages if the settlement dates don’t align perfectly. It can feel like an eternity while you wait for your first property to sell, and if the market suddenly slows it can be tempting to take the first offer you

P.A.

In many ways, the process is the same. You need to write your wish list – where the property is, what size it is – and think about how much you want to spend. This is where the buy first or sell first conundrum comes in, because it’s much easier to figure out how much you have to spend if you have already sold your first property. A property is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it at the time that it’s for sale. It’s unwise to hedge your bets solely on an algorithm-generated valuation, the back-of-an-envelope calculation or recent rating valuations. Selling first means you have freed up any equity and you have a firmer budget to work with. However, in a slow market it can mean that you are left scrambling to find ‘the one’. Even if you do find the right property, it can take longer than you might anticipate to reach settlement on it, which means you may have an unspecified period between exiting your last home and moving into your new one. This can be particularly tough for people with children and pets, especially in an area or at a time of year when there is a lot of competition for short-term rentals. If you do sell first, it’s a good idea to try to negotiate a longer settlement period to give yourselves a bit more breathing space. Ask your real estate agent and lawyer for advice on how to do this for – because you’re the seller, you get to set the terms and conditions for your sale process.

receive in order to get the place off your hands. Before you do anything rash, talk to your lender or a mortgage broker about what your options are in this situation. You are likely to need bridging finance to cover your offer on the new home – depending on your circumstances and the method of sale you may need access to these funds quite quickly. Be aware that owning two homes will also have insurance implications – you will need both to be covered.

demand for a property like yours. Tackle all those jobs around the house that have needed doing all year – trim those overhanging branches, replace the broken letterbox and repaint the scratched front door. At the very least doing this will make it a pleasant place to live while you figure out your next move. For independent advice on buying or selling property, check out www.reaa.govt.nz. – REAA

If you are planning to buy first, you can make the sale of your existing property a condition of your offer. While this takes the pressure off, it may also make your offer less attractive to a seller. A good compromise may be to try to negotiate a longer settlement when you buy the new property, which will give you more time to sell. Talk to the real estate agent selling the property to find out how you can negotiate this in a way that the seller will be happy with. There’s no perfect, one-size-fits-all solution in this situation. Perhaps the best advice is that if you are starting to think about buying it’s a good idea to get your property and your finances in order. Talk to your lender or a mortgage broker and give them an indication of your plans. Start talking to real estate agents in your area to find out what might be coming on the market, and ask them for an assessment of

Easy as — how to build a fence A good fence can make a big difference to a property. It’s out there for the whole world to see, so all the more reason to make sure it looks good and is built well. Why let someone else take the credit for a job this important? Follow the instructions and tips laid out and you’ll be able to do it yourself. There are some points to consider prior to construction; fence design and its suitability to your home, privacy issues, wind shelter, legal obligations, requirements of the local authority, boundary definitions, consultation with neighbours, how it blends with the local environment, and of course, cost. The following construction sequence is for a simple post/rail and paling fence, but can be adapted for any fence design depending on your enthusiasm. So grab your confidence with both hands and let’s get started.

Getting started: Set out First, establish your property boundary. If you can’t find the white boundary pegs, talk to your council about getting boundary set or agree on boundary line with your neighbour. Establish a boundary line. Lay out a string line 50mm inside your boundary attached to pegs. This will determine where the front face of the posts will be.

Positioning your fence posts Select the end post positions. At each end of the fence dig a hole with a spade or post hole borer to a depth of 600mm with allowance for concrete base. Clean out loose material from base and place a rough concrete pad or base of gravel in the bottom of the hole. Gate posts should be set deeper into the ground by an extra 100mm. Posts in high wind locations or unstable ground conditions should also be set an extra 100mm into the ground. Have tools, nails, braces and pegs ready. Fix braces to ground peg with single nail, to allow brace to pivot. Tack braces to posts so they can be easily removed later. Check plumb before adding concrete. Mix concrete (6:1 ratio builder’s mix to cement, pre-mixed Easy to set or quick setting Quick to set).

HOW TO BUILD A

Add water to create a stiff mix. Pour the concrete around the posts carefully. Compact the mix with a piece of wood to remove any air pockets Check post alignment and check for plumb. Adjust to maintain proper alignment. Set a string line at the top of the two end posts. This can be used as a guide to set posts at the correct height. Alternatively, they can be cut to height later.

Getting it done:

Equally spread the intermediate posts Fixing the rails along string line. Posts should be a maximum of 2.3m apart, measured between Leave concrete to set for two days before centres. fixing rails. Two rails are sufficient for Brace posts using temporary rails. Check fences up to 1200mm high. Use three rails alignment and vertical level on two adjacent for fence heights above 1200mm high. faces using a spirit level. Use 100 x 50mm H4 treated rails. For Mix concrete or bags of quick drying cement and pour carefully around posts. Post alignment and plumb can be adjusted up to 5 minutes after concrete has been poured. However, if using quick setting Quikcrete, you won’t be able to do any adjusting.

Stay safe The use of power tools makes the

smaller spans use 75 x 50mm H4 treated rails. Rails can be fixed either between the posts, or to the face of the post, depending on fence style. Check alignment with string line and ensure the rails are square. For between post rails – rails should be measured at ground level, squared and cut to length - fix to posts with three galvanised flat head nails 100mm long.

Check alignment with string line and ensure the rails are square. For face fixed rails – select a length of rail that can span three posts – fix with two galvanised flat head nails. Remember measure twice, cut once.

Palings Set string line at the height of the top of the palings. This can be done by fixing the first and last paling temporarily at the proper height and then setting the string line between them. Use a spirit level to regularly check that palings are plumb. Butt palings together as there will be shrinkage. Fix with galvanised flat head nails that are three times as long as paling thickness. If the paling thickness is 25mm, use a minimum 75mm nail. If the paling is 19mm, use a minimum 60mm nail. If you want spaces between your palings, cut a block to size, then use this as a spacer between the palings (top and bottom) as you nail them in place.

The Ford Endura ST-Line features an enhanced design with distinctive alloys, body-styling kit, unique badging, upgraded sports suspension and a twin-turbo performance diesel 2.0-litre engine with Euro VI compliant emissions standard. “The Endura ST-Line will be a real stand out offering in what is a fiercely competitive market,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director Ford New Zealand. “While SUVs continue to grow in popularity, the capability, design and technology that comes with the ST-Line gives the Endura an edge over its competitors and is a fantastic way for Ford to introduce the new nameplate to New Zealand.” Built in Canada, the Ford Endura STLine is a prime example of the One Ford global product portfolio and joins Ford New Zealand’s expanding SUV range alongside the Ford Everest large 4WD SUV, the Escape medium-sized SUV and the EcoSport small SUV. when it is needed, Intelligent AWD has minimal impact on fuel-efficiency and CO2 emissions compared with permanent four-wheel drive systems. The Ford Endura ST-Line has a number of noise control devices and designs working together to provide a real sense of tranquility when driving. Ford’s Active Noise Control silences unwanted cabin noise. Microphones detect and measure specific sound waves. Whilst a control unit can separate sounds people want to hear, like conversation and the audio, from those they do not. The system then creates inaudible ‘white noise’ to cancel out any unwelcome noises. Acoustic windscreen glass and laminated glass for both front door windows further reduce wind noise while underbody panels and wheel-arch liners further minimise road noise. The Endura ST Line features an advanced 2.0 TDCi engine upgraded with a 154kW bi-turbo to maximise performance, torque and economy, whilst lowering emissions. The Bi-Turbo engine features two turbochargers and offers enhanced performance and efficiency. The primary turbo works at lower speeds, giving an extra boost when needed - such as when turning from a junction into moving traffic. Meanwhile, the secondary turbo works at higher speeds, like when overtaking a slow-moving vehicle. The two rear outer seats are fitted with rear inflatable seat belts.

Type R scores a hat-trick

T Blast from the past 70s style . . . The replica Yoshimura Suzuki superbike, built by Graeme Crosby and to be ridden at Levels by American Wes Cooley.

B

ack in the 1970s, motorcycle legends Kiwi Graeme Crosby and American Wes Cooley started as rivals, then became team-mates and finally became friends. This weekend they’re among an all-star line-up of Australian and New Zealand greats set to entertain crowds at the Mike Pero Southern Classic at Levels. Los Angeles-born Cooley (61), a two-time United States superbike champion, is no stranger to Timaru. He raced at Levels during the Marlboro Series in the 1970s, when one of his rivals was an equally young Crosby. They later teamed up to win the prestigious

he Honda Civic Type R has triumphed in the coveted BBC TopGear magazine Car of the Year awards, taking a hattrick of honours. Picking up the hot hatch of the year, international editors’ car of the year and then going on to claim the overall prize, car of the year. The awards issue of BBC TopGear Magazine is their annual celebration of the very best cars of the year. As the world’s largest monthly car magazine, this year their awards went global with the editors of all 22 of their international editions voting for their favourite cars of the year.

The Civic Type R has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot-hatch segment – both on road and on the race track. “The Civic Type R isn’t just the best Hot Hatch of the Year, it’s the best Car of the Year,” said TopGear. “It’s addictive, rhythmic and devastatingly rapid; a true hero for the masses delivering accessibility and madness in one package. The thrill comes from the sheer single-mindedness of it.” The Civic Type R has a top speed of 169mph, 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. Power comes from the 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine producing 320 PS with peak torque of 400 Nm.

The machine Cooley will ride is a replica of that Suzuki – recently completed by Crosby in his Matakana workshop. Two other big names, multi New Zealand champion Andrew Stroud and multi Canadian champion Gary Goodfellow, will be putting in some parade laps on rare Christchurch-built Brittens. Others taking part in the Parade of ChampioThe Southern Classic has attracted more than 300 motorcycle entries, and nearly as many riders, keen to chase podium places over a action-packed two days of racing.

Motoring in pure style A

recent story in the Guardian about the return of William Protheroe’s World War One dog tag to his family fascinated many readers. For many years the dog tag was kept by Chris Slade, who lives in Western Australia. He found it among his late father’s belongings and after research made a connection via our newspaper with Warwick Protheroe. When the story first appeared in April 2016 this writer realised the late William Protheroe was Warwick’s late uncle. Ironically at the time Warwick and Julianna Protheroe were in Australia. Chris Slade, who has no idea why his father had the dog tag, said he planned to reunite it with its owner’s family this year, which marks 100 years since William Protheroe died in England while on active service. And true to his word Chris did just that. For this writer there is a little more to the story. I got a call from Warwick who said he was going to collect the dog tag in Christchurch and he thought given the earlier involvement I might like to accompany him on the expedition. One didn’t have to be asked twice! It was arranged we would leave from Warwick’s home. Apart from looking forward to the chance to catch up with Warwick and have a day away I hadn’t thought about how we might be travelling, so I it was a very pleasant surprise to arrive at the appointed time and see Warwick’s immaculate Triumph TR6 convertible sitting in the driveway, hood down and ready to roll. The car is a 1972 model which sits on wire wheels. Its two-and-a-half litre 6-cylinder fuel-

Bernard Egan MOTORING

injected motor which produces 150 horsepower drives through a 4-speed gearbox fitted with overdrive. Leaving from Warwick’s home meant we could travel across country to connect with State Highway One at Overdale, which added to the enjoyment of motoring in such a superb car. In the hands of a very good driver the TR6 provides a very comfortable ride both on the open road as well as amongst city traffic. Meeting Chris Slade and uplifting the dog tag was an interesting and someone poignant experience, which prompted us to ponder on Warwick’s ancestor and realise there are some family similarities. The dog tag had been handed on to a descendant with a Christian name beginning with the same initial as its owner. The late William Protheroe was a driver

in the army and driving has played a very significant part in Warwick’s life. Like his father before him Warwick is interested in cars. The interest has flowed into the next generation too, with Warwick’s son Chris, who has notched up success in the motor sport of drifting, now following a career in motor sport administration. So it’s logical to think there’s a hereditary thing going on. We don’t know what sort of vehicle the late William Protheroe drove, but we do know several manufacturers including Ford, Rolls Royce, Vauxhall and others produced various types of vehicles for military use back then. The First World War saw the early use of motor vehicles by the military, vehicles described by some historians as being in their awkward teenage years at the time.

Military use provided a testing ground and definitely led to the development and improvement of motorised transport. And of course the pioneering manufacturers and people like William Protheroe who drove those early vehicles were farsighted and adventurous. The trip we made to Christchurch didn’t take too long and we travelled in comfort in a sports car. No doubt before heading overseas the late William Protheroe made the same trip in various forms of early transportation, but taking much longer on rougher roads and in less comfort. It’s interesting to wonder what he would think about the car we travelled in. Having been a machinery salesman before going to war and then becoming a driver, the late William Protheroe was undoubtedly a person who recognised the potential of horseless carriages and realised motor vehicles would evolve as time went on. So maybe he wouldn’t be too surprised about the vehicle his great-nephew chose for the trip to pick up his dog tag. A classic vehicle was appropriate and in fact we’re sure William Protheroe would be delighted. Travelling with a skilled driver in a fabulous car on a special errand really was a great day out.

Ron and Marilyn’s Commercial Run There were 72 enthusiasts and they travelled in all sorts of makes, models, types, colours and sizes of vehicles on Ron and Marilyn Galletly’s commercial run last weekend. During their interesting and enjoyable tour they saw collections of cars and tractors, visited commercial premises and had lunch at the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

Truly a driver’s car T

he Mercedes-Benz E220d AMG is the number one car for the chauffeur and private hire industry, as judged by readers of Professional Driver magazine. The E-Class also won the Executive Car of the Year category in the Awards, announced this week. Mark Bursa, editor of Professional Driver Magazine, said: “The new E220d is such a versatile vehicle. It’s roomy and comfortable, and good enough for chauffeuring work, yet economical enough to use for private hire work such as airport runs. “It incorporates a lot of safety technology and its interior finish is up to SClass standard. And ignore the hysteria about diesel – this is an economical and clean car with very low emissions of CO2, NOx and particulates.” The Professional Driver Awards are among the most rigorous in the automotive industry. There are seven categories in total, and a one-day judging event is held in August. The Professional Driver Car of the Year Awards are now in their eighth year. Every shortlisted car is delivered to the venue for a full day’s evaluation by more than 100 judges, comprising invited heads of leading chauffeur and private hire firms, experienced chauffeurs, as well as carefully chosen motoring editors and journalists.

This year, more than 60 vehicles were available for the judges to test on the day, giving them a rare chance to evaluate competing products back-to-back, in real-world conditions. Cars are tested on a circular road route, taking in urban roads and motorway-standard dual-carriageways.

OUR VIEW

Long may vocal councillors continue Matt Markham

EDITOR

D

eveloping relationships that will have economic and cultural benefits is a big thing for any community, but perhaps not our community, or at least so it would seem. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel pitched her plan to see a development of an international relations policy at yesterday’s bylaw and policy sub-committee meeting, but was met with some resistance from around the council table. Councillor Stuart Wilson was the most vocal and was quite direct – suggesting that it might be worthwhile forgetting about international relations and arts and culture policies altogether and suggested that such matters are being overdone currently. And most importantly, there may just be a realisation that there is a strong need to start focusing on what the people of the district see as important. Our current poll on the Guardian website asks voters to vote for one of five options on what they think should be the main focus of the Ashburton District Council currently. As of last night, less than 2 per cent of the vote stated that developing relationships with sister cities should be the priority. Perhaps councillor Wilson had seen the poll prior to heading into yesterday’s meeting? Mayor Favel has every right to ask the question though and a lot of what she is saying is correct and has some validity – but Wilson’s rebuttal that it is more of a government issue would seem to be correct. What will encourage most ratepayers of this district though is that we are now starting to see action from the council table which doesn’t correlate to everyone accepting and agreeing with what rolls through the front doors. As councillor Wilson showed yesterday, we now have those who are willing to take stock of the more pressing and important issues and stand up and state their absolute opinion. Councillor Wilson’s comments yesterday will draw plenty of agreeance from within the community, I am sure. As elected members of the council, ratepayers should be able to expect them to stand up for what they firmly believe in. Recent events would suggest, however, that we haven’t seen a lot of that, until yesterday. Long may it continue.

YOUR VIEW Toot for Tucker Ashburton County Lions would like to thank the community of Ashburton and surrounding areas for the overwhelming support for Toot for Tucker on Monday evening. The evening’s success was due mainly to those who just turned up with their cars, trailers and runners to collect the food. We acknowledge and were encouraged too by the large numbers of young people who joined us for the collection. Thank you to their leaders and families who supported them in giving this service to our com-

munity. Thank you also to members of the public who not only gave food items so generously, but also supported County Lions’ members in sorting and packing the food for distribution. Each year Toot for Tucker just gets bigger and we are grateful for the continuing support from Property Brokers for sponsoring advertising and suppling Toot for Tucker plastic bags, Courier newspaper for delivering them, New World for supplying the boxes, the Society of St Vincent de Paul’s ‘boys’ for collecting and delivering the boxes and the Ashburton Racing Club for being

the distribution site. This year we had a record amount of food collected and distributed to the Salvation Army, the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support Service; all of whom have expressed their gratitude to you the public, for your generosity. Ashburton County Lions sincerely thank the public for your continuing support for this very important annual project. Carolyn Nelson President

Phill Hooper hands over TAB cheques for the new garden at St Joseph’s School.

Gambling for good E

ach week I stare blankly at the screen, hoping that some sort of inspiration hits me. I’m not talking about this weekly column, it’s Sportsbet 4 Charity. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but Manda just mentioned to me last week, “You seem to have more luck with Sportsbet 4 Charity than you do with your own bets.” I think the fact that I only ever shell out $5 or $10 of my own hard-earned and the TAB gives me $25 to play with each week has a part to play. Although in saying that, a few months ago after a lean trot I recruited the expert help of Francis Renner. Frano is an astute member of the Friday Poker Club which gathers monthly for an evening of cards and solving the world’s problems. Each month when we gather, he appears to have an investment riding on the outcome of whatever sport is airing on the

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

telly in the corner of the “card room” we are occupying. Each month he goes to lengths to explain what exactly a points start is and how a plus or a minus means you want which team to win. I’m sure he watches the information pass swiftly over my head and thinks to himself ‘I may as well be talking to the beer fridge in the opposite corner from the telly’. But he humours me. So I set us both a challenge of turning $12.50 each into around $100 each week. The current scoreboard sees Renner with a total of $186 returned and Hooper with $740. I am seriously thinking about putting him on the transfer

market! Two weeks in a row I had success and managed to raise a total of $214 and I knew exactly where it was going. I met Gabby Simpson at the Ashburton A&P Show, she’s a teacher at St Joseph’s School. She had a bunch of kids from her class entered in the Recycled Waste Competition and she was telling me all about the new garden at St Jo’s. It was all good except for the lack of water, which she had to carry over by hand to the garden. The hamster hopped in the wheel and I got to thinking, I can help here! So it was with pleasure I presented Gabby with two cheques from the TAB. I think a school garden is a fantastic addition to any school. Learning to grow food must be one of life’s essential lessons one would think? They are also learning about composting, worm farming and they also have a wee beehive with non-honey-making bees.

They are not as likely to sting, but will still pollinate the garden. Placemakers, Bunnings and Mitre 10 have all helped them out with things like fence posts and plants. They are growing heritage plants so the kids can learn about harvesting seeds next. With all the recycling and food composting going on at school, they are down to one bag of rubbish a week, but hope to be rubbish free in the near future. How cool is that! Aussie banks face Royal Commission A Royal Commission into Australia’s banking sector will be launched after the Big Four themselves called for a “properly constituted inquiry”. In a major backflip yesterday, Malcolm Turnbull announced the $A75 million ($82.9m) inquiry saying speculation about the commission was moving into “dangerous territory” that was putting the banking sector and the Australian economy at risk. “The speculation about an inquiry cannot go on,” Prime Minister Turnbull told reporters in Canberra. “It’s moving into dangerous territory where some of the proposals being put forward have the potential, seriously, to damage some of our most important institutions. “We have got to stop the banks and our financial services sector being used as a political football.” Turnbull’s announcement comes after the chief executives of the Commonwealth, Westpac, National Australia and ANZ banks requested the government step in and launch an inquiry in an email sent to Treasurer Scott Morrison on Wednesday. The letter was released by each

bank in an ASX release yesterday. “It is now in the national interest for the political uncertainty to end,” the chief executives said. “It is hurting confidence in our financial services system, including in offshore markets, and has diminished trust and respect for our sector and people. It also risks

that is simply because we want to get on with the job now,” he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday. “If we had set up a Royal Commission into banks two years ago, none of the reforms that we have undertaken would have been able to be achieved.” His announcement yesterday

undermining the critical perception that our banks are unquestionably strong.” Turnbull’s announcement comes just two days after he again ruled out a Royal Commission. “We have made it clear that we are not going to establish a Royal Commission and the reason for

scuppers the threat of an imminent internal revolt from National’s senators, who were planning to launch a bid in Parliament for a Royal Commission with support from Labor and the Greens yesterday. Treasurer Scott Morrison has dubbed the Royal Commission a “regrettable but necessary action”. Government reforms to strengthen oversight and penalties in the banking sector undertaken in the past year would not have been possible if a Royal Commission had been launched earlier, Morrison said in a joint press conference with the Prime Minister at Parliament House. “All these reforms and actions would not have occurred had the government agreed to undertake this action earlier, such actions would have been unnecessarily delayed,” he said. “Nor would such action prior to this time have been in the national economic interest. “But the nature of political events means the national economic interest is now served by taking what I describe as a regrettable but necessary action.” - NZME

Investors on edge in mixed week T he NZX50 has been mixed this week, and had investors on edge as the possibility of the index logging its first monthly decline of 2017 became very real. The month has seen profit taking from some of the big winners of the year, while corporate newsflow has been a key driver for investors as the November reporting and AGM season continues. Xero has continued to come under pressure this week and its result was one of the most noteworthy after the company announced it would be delisting from the NZX to consolidate its ASX listing. Xero’s share price has fallen more than 9 per cent on the month, falling a further 5 per cent this week alone. The result itself was quite positive however investors shrugged this off, choosing to concentrate on the delisting. Ryman Healthcare was noteworthy for the opposite reason, beating expectations and giving a positive outlook. The retirement village sector has been under pressure of late as expectations for a house price slowdown increase. However, Ryman’s result showed that the company continues to execute its growth strategy well, with occupancy levels remaining well above industry standards. The share price rose above $10 for the first time ever. The big economic event this week for the NZ market was the ANZ outlook survey. The previous two surveys had shown

Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS

that confidence was falling, and many attributed it to the political uncertainty throughout the period. However, the November survey showed further with a net 39 per cent of those surveyed being pessimistic. All sectors surveyed were pessimistic for the coming year with agriculture the most negative, with a net 55 per cent of those surveyed expecting worsening conditions. The own activity index, often taken as a more accurate measure for predicting GDP, fell sharply for the month to just 6.5. This is down to levels not seen since 2009 when the GFC was in full swing. The retail sector was most pessimistic with the activity outlook index hitting -14.3. This suggests that the sector will be delaying investment spending and are unlikely to be hiring, and if anything could mean the sector will be tightening their purse strings. Looking offshore, global markets have painted a mixed picture this month. The US has again had an exceptional time rising to fresh records during the month. The region saw further support after it was announced this month that Jerome Powell would be taking the reins of the Federal Reserve in February.

Powell is largely viewed as being sympathetic to Janet Yellen’s views so the path of the Fed is likely to remain steady. The proposed tax legislation changes also passed a massive milestone, narrowly passing through a vote from the Senate Banking Committee this week. European markets have seen a decline this month as political uncertainty continues to be at the forefront for investors. Over two months after their election, Germany is still yet to form a government. Negotiations had broken down and there were talks of the nation going back to the polls. Talks have now resumed and there is hope that a deal will be reached soon. Meanwhile, in the UK, markets have continued to monitor the Brexit situation. Rumours have surfaced that the UK has upped its “divorce payment” to the EU, which has been a sticking point for negotiations. This sent the British pound higher which impacted the FTSE 100 causing weakness. Oil prices had a resurgence earlier in the month, rising to multi year highs. Some of these gains were given back following the OPEC conference, as no clear decision was given over the future of oil cuts, with conflicting views given out by several of the players. ■ INTER DOMINIONS

Lazarus to rise tonight BY ADAM HAMILTON Lazarus will be a hot favourite to land his first heat win of the Perth Inter Dominion series at Gloucester Park tonight. After two gallant seconds so far, Lazarus has landed the easiest of tonight’s three heats and should control the race despite a wide draw (gate seven). He will also relish the step-up to 2536m. Lazarus won’t have to contend with any of the other big guns of the series with the likes of Soho Tribeca, Chicago Bull, Tiger Tara and Lennytheshark also drawn different heats. Speedster Yayas Hot Spot drew directly outside Lazarus in gate eight, but it’s likely Mark Purdon will get serious on his stable star at the start to hone his gate speed ahead of a possible good draw in the final. Lazarus did all the chasing outside winner Tiger Tara when second in a record-smashing 1min 52.3sec mile rate for 2100m at Bunbury on Tuesday night. It took 1.5sec off the record. Lazarus’ stablemate Have Faith

Mark Purdon and Lazarus should open their winning account tonight.

In Me is one of his rivals tonight, but is out of contention for a final berth. He’s drawn the outside (gate nine). Lazarus will relish the 2536m. He’s had 13 starts at 2400m or further for 11 wins, a second in the Ballarat Cup and then a third

in the Avon City Ford Cup. Tiger Tara faces an even harder challenge now he’s drawn (gate six) outside local star Chicago Bull (gate one) in the first of tonight’s heats. Chicago Bull looks certain to hold the front and he has proven unbeatable when leading dur-

ing his Australian career. Tiger Tara will likely have to sit outside the leader as he did when second to Lennytheshark on opening night. Emerging local Shandale needs big points to make the final, but could get his chance from gate five against Chicago Bull and Tiger Tara. The second of tonight’s heats shapes as the best of the series so far with San Carlo drawn one against Lennytheshark (gate seven) and Soho Tribeca the outside (nine). “The draw wouldn’t worry him if he was at his top,” Lennytheshark’s driver Chris Alford said. “I’m backing him to bounce back on Friday. I’m sure David (Aiken, trainer) will have him right. He definitely ran a bit below his best at Bunbury, but he’s bounced back before.” Lazarus is a $2.80 favourite on the Aussie TAB from Soho Tribeca at $3. The field for the Grand Final will decided after tonight’s heats with the barrier draw held on Sunday. - HRNZ

Emotional success Polzeath recorded a poignant win for Rich Hill Stud at Avondale yesterday. The lightly-tried five-yearold is a son of the recently deceased Pentire, the farm’s foundation stallion. The Moira and Kieran Murdoch-trained Polzeath is part-owned by Rich Hill’s John Thompson and was making just his third race day appearance and first for five months. - NZME

Mofara ready to run Cambridge trainers David and Emma-Lee Browne are expecting a recently-gelded Mofara to start showcasing his Derby potential, beginning with today’s Gr.3 Lucia Valentina Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Otaki. “He’s doing really well. He’s been gelded and his race last time out was just so much better,” Emma-Lee Browne said. - NZME

Time to break drought Mighty Solomon is well-placed in the handicap at the Otaki meeting today to break a lengthy drought. The seven-year-old will carry 53.5kg in the Listed Fasttrack Insurance Levin Stakes (1200m) in his quest for his first win since he was successful in an open handicap at Hawke’s Bay in February, 2015. “He has trained on very well since his last run,” trainer Lisa Latta said. - NZME

■ CRICKET

In brief

Selectors go for Henry Canterbury seamer Matt Henry has pipped Auckland speedster Lockie Ferguson for the vacant fast-medium spot in the New Zealand team for the first test against the West Indies starting at the Basin Reserve today. Henry has taken 22 wickets at 48.5 from his eight tests. They are not flattering but he did impress in the final test last summer, the decider against South Africa in Hamilton last March. He took five wickets in the match and had a good game. Ferguson is in strong form too, and captain Kane Williamson admitted the decision had taken plenty of mulling over. “He’s been playing well for a long time and probably hasn’t had the opportunities he’s deserved,’’ Williamson said of Henry. ‘’Now he has a great opportunity. “He is a different bowler to Lockie but has been bowling with good pace and does tend to move the ball well so it’s exciting for Matt. “Against South Africa (in Hamilton) he was outstanding.’’ Ferguson took seven wickets for New Zealand A against the West Indies at Lincoln and Williamson said he had been in rousing form. First choice Tim Southee is sitting the match out due to the impending arrival of his baby. In the only other change, Tom

Canterbury Cricket have signed Ben Stokes to play in the Ford Trophy. The inclusion of the English allrounder has been agreed by Canterbury Cricket Association, the English Cricket Board, endorsed by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and sanctioned by New Zealand Cricket. Stokes will be available to play for Canterbury in their opening Ford Trophy match against Otago on December 3. A flurry of local and international interest and speculation saw the decision delayed while extra discussions took place. The NZ Herald understands Canterbury gave the matter careful thought after the initial enthusiasm to recruit such a worldclass player wavered. One source said murmurings from the province suggested the situation was far from definitive. The pragmatic value in having a player of Stokes’ talent was weighed up against any possible backlash after his arrest after a September 25 brawl in Bristol. CCA Director of Cricket, Gary Stead, said the Canterbury team

Cricket legend Sir Ian Botham says England bowlers need to be more brutal and that their batsmen were naive in the way they played Australian spinner Nathan Lyon. England’s tail struggled against short pitched bowling in the first test loss in Brisbane and Botham feels similar treatment needs to be meted out to their Australian counterparts. England had an opportunity too to get stuck into the Australian tail but they didn’t,” Botham said. “There was no real aggression, no real venom ... so fight fire with fire.” - AAP

Smith among the greats Former Australian captain Allan Border believes incumbent skipper Steve Smith will need to maintain his high standards for at least five more years if he is to surpass to another ex-leader, Ricky Ponting, as the country’s second highestrated batsman of all time. Smith is the third highest Australian behind Donald Bradman (first) and Ponting (fourth) with English greats Len Hutton and Jack Hobbs second and third respectively. Asked if he could see Smith going past Ponting, Border said “he’ll have to do something pretty remarkable, because Ricky Ponting had a hell of a career”. - AAP

Khawaja not bothered

Matt Henry gets the nod over Lockie Ferguson to face the West Indies in the first test. Blundell makes his debut as wicketkeeper for the injured BJ Watling. It will be New Zealand’s first test in eight months which could

put them at a disadvantage compared to the tourists, who have been busy in the test game in recent months. The West Indies are gifted ath-

letes, Williamson added, pointing to the tourists having “a bit of x-factor’’ in their bowling. They do move the ball and it’ll be a really tough challenge.’’ - NZME

Stokes signs up to play for Canterbury BY ANDREW ALDERSON

England batsmen ‘naive’

and management are thrilled Stokes has joined the team and believes he has a tremendous amount to offer. “After the approach from Ben’s representatives everything has happened very quickly for us to the extent that we are now delighted to welcome Ben into the team,” said Stead. “Ben will bring international experience to what is a relatively youthful changing room.” “He will also bring depth to our seam attack which has been affected by a string of injuries and provide more balance and firepower to our batting line up.” “While Ben awaits the outcome of an investigation under way in the UK, he wants to maintain his fitness and his connection with the game. “He is a brilliant all-round player and we are really pleased to have secured one of the world’s best players in our domestic competition. “His experience will be invaluable to our young cricketers as we look defend our Ford Trophy title and improve performances in the Burger King Super Smash. “The team have expressed their excitement about the op-

Ben Stokes portunity to learn from and play with Ben.” The investigation surrounding Stokes has been passed to Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service. A statement from Avon and Somerset police said they were “seeking charging advice”. In essence, nothing has changed with Stokes’ legal situation. No charges have been laid. Stokes’ tenure could be brief if he is selected for the third Ashes test starting in Perth on December 14. The 26-year-old is unavailable

for international selection while he and the England and Wales Cricket Board await a decision on whether he will be charged. Any ECB disciplinary hearing will take place after that. The decision might unleash an ethical debate. While Stokes has not been charged, the video footage suggests he was involved in a significant altercation. That might jar with Canterbury’s situation, albeit only on a moral level, which saw Ken McClure stand down from representative cricket after pleading guilty to one count of injuring with reckless disregard. He will be sentenced on January 19. Canterbury Cricket CEO, Jez Curwin, gave clarity on that issue. “While it would be easy to draw direct comparisons between the position taken recently with another player [McClure], we have to reiterate that in that situation the player was free to play until such time as he pleaded guilty to the charges.” “We believe Ben has the right to be treated the same way as other players.” - NZME

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja says he’s not bothered by his poor record against spin bowling. Khawaja fell to spinner Moeen Ali in the Ashes opener in Brisbane, continuing his rough patch against slow bowlers. Khawaja has been dismissed by spin bowlers in 17 of his 43 test knocks and was dropped from the test side on subcontinent tours earlier this year. But the reinstated first-drop is unfazed by that record as Australia prepares for the second test, which starts on Saturday in Adelaide. “Sometimes you just get out – it’s cricket,” Khawaja said. - AAP

Chip off the old block Riley McCullum, son of retired star Brendon McCullum, proved his potential on the pitch after being ranked as the current most valued player in the Northern Districts Under 14 Cricket Tournament. Riley is also currently ranked within the top five across batting and bowling, and was named within the tournament’s dream team. Riley showcased his impressive batsman skills during a game for the leading Waikato Valley Primary team who beat Bella Primary yesterday. Brendon tweeted the leaderboard and said seeing his son at the top of the pile took the cake. - NZME

Windies camp confident West Indies skipper Jason Holder is talking up his side’s chances ahead of the first test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve. The Caribbean side is in a pretty good space and had played some decent cricket, he told reporters in Wellington ahead of today’s first day. They had been boosted by test wins in Zimbabwe and England, and while a surprise victory in Leeds was significant, they were now looking forward. “We are still not the finished product. We’ve got to set our minds to that and play the cricket necessary to win the series.” - NZME

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Roos red-hot for final By DaviD Skipwith New Zealand might not be there and neither are Tonga – but there’s still plenty of reasons why Kiwi league fans should get excited about tomorrow’s World Cup final between Australia and England at Suncorp Stadium. The result may appear a foregone conclusion with the Kangaroos red hot favourites to retain the title they won in 2013, but history shows this was also the case when they met the Kiwis at the same venue in the 2008 World Cup final only to suffer a historic 34-20 defeat. And as straight-forward as the result might seem there is plenty of hope that England can cause a similar upset. England coach Wayne Bennett played a key role throughout that campaign as an assistant to Kiwis head coach Stephen Kearney and intrigue surrounds whether the Broncos master coach can engineer another boilover this time around. Such a result would provide a further jolt to an Australian league audience generally preoccupied with the NRL and State of Origin and add another strong gust to the winds of change already blowing across international football in the wake of semi-finalists Tonga and Fiji’s successful campaigns. The ease with which the Kangaroos have managed to amass 204 points and concede just 16 in five matches has failed to generate the same level of excitement in Australia to what we experienced in New Zealand, with Tonga drawing sell-out crowds for their shock win over the Kiwis in Hamilton and last week’s 20-18 loss to England in Auckland. England may be a tier one nation but this is their first World Cup final appearance in 22 years and they have struggled for results against the Kiwis and Australians in recent years. Despite the apparent apathy

Gritty win for Kiwis New Zealand have topped their pool at the men’s world team squash championship in France, downing the United States 2-1. World No.9 Paul Coll won 11-9 11-7 11-3 in 40 minutes over Todd Harrity in the opening match, before Evan Williams dropped his match in four games against Christopher Hanson 8-11 11-8 11-7 11-7. Campbell Grayson won the contest for the Kiwis with a gritty 11-6 11-3 9-11 11-7 victory over Christopher Gordon in a lengthy 58-minute battle. Seeded sixth, New Zealand are now through to the top 16 playoffs, where they will meet 12th seeds Spain. - NZME

Big year for Ferns The Silver Ferns will tackle a busy international schedule next year, highlighted by the Commonwealth Games in April. An action-packed season will start in January when England and South Africa host the Netball Quad Series. The Silver Ferns will travel to London to play England on January 20 before heading to Johannesburg to meet South Africa and Australia. A final warm-up for the Games is scheduled in Auckland in March when the Kiwis will contest the Taini Jamison Trophy. The international season will finish with a four-test series against Australia for the Constellation Cup. - NZME

Wood scores again Cameron Smith and Sean O’Loughlin will lead their teams out on to Suncorp tomorrow night. of Australian fans – evidenced by small attendances across the ditch throughout the tournament – there is a growing appetite there for genuine contests and an England victory would have many reassessing the perceived inferiority of the UK Super League. Nothing will impact on the status and enormity of the beast that is Origin football, but if Australia were to fall – and we’re talking about a team boasting the talents of three of the greatest players of all time in captain Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater – it would come as a huge wake-up call.

And while the Kiwis and Tongans have been relegated to mere spectators this weekend, this clash will not lack for intensity or passion. Australia may have claimed an 18-4 win over England in the tournament opening clash in Melbourne, but their performance was far from convincing and there are concerns the Kangaroos have had it too easy going undefeated while amassing 206 points and conceding just 16 in five matches. England, on the other hand, are yet to find their best form for 80 minutes but are battle-hardened after two physical quarter

and semi-final wins over Papua New Guinea and Tonga. The pressure is well and truly on the home side – no member of the Kangaroos team has won a World Cup on home soil as only two other Cup finals have been played in Australia – in 1968 when Australia beat France 20-2 and in 1977 when they defeated Great Britain 13-12, with both games played in Sydney. While Kiwi fans may not be too excited about the prospect of cheering for England, they can only hope to revel in Australia suffering what would be a Titanic-sized shock defeat – no matter how close the margin. - NZME

■ MOTOR RACING

Bathurst legends heading to Hampton Downs Some of the biggest names in Bathurst history will feature in some iconic cars at the NZ Festival of Motor Racing at Hampton Downs in January. The 4Guys Autobarn Legends of Bathurst festival on January 13-14 will see the likes of Jim Richards, John Bowe, Steven Richards, Greg Murphy and Paul Radisich compete at the North Waikato track in famous cars from yesteryear. That group of drivers boasts a staggering 17 Bathurst wins between them. Hampton Downs has hosted the NZ Festival of Motor Racing the past two years with previous themes focusing on legendary drivers like Kenny Smith

or Howden Ganley or famous marques like Porsche or Ferrari. “It is our second year at Hampton Downs. The festival itself has been running since 2010,” Hampton Downs business development manager Mike Marsden said. “We are certainly staying with the classic theme but we wanted to make it more appealing to a wider audience. “That’s where the Legends of Bathurst idea came up. “Kiwis really have an affinity with the mountain and what’s happened there over many decades. “Our plan – and this could be just stage one – is we look at how we celebrate the various eras of

cars and the stars that have raced there.” A stack of famous touring cars will be at Hampton Downs for the event. There are a host of BMWs, the 1986 championship-winning Volvo, a couple of Jaguar XJs’ and a Ford Sierra. The Richards family will have divided loyalties when it comes to the Historic Touring Car category, one of the feature events at the festival. Jim will drive the Peter Sturgeon-owned, ex-Frank Gardner Group C BMW 635 CSi while Steve will climb behind the wheel of an ex-Gianfranco Brancatelli/Johnny Cecotto BMW E30 M3, also owned by Sturgeon. - NZME

All Whites striker Chris Wood has scored for Burnley in his first start since returning from New Zealand’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign. The Kiwi marksman, restricted by a hamstring injury as the All Whites lost their home-andaway qualifier against Peru 2-0, found the back of the net in the 37th minute of Burnley’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth. Wood’s goal was his fifth for Burnley and edges the club up into sixth place. - NZME

Gunners rolling on Huddersfield has been destroyed 5-0 by a rampant Arsenal side at the Emirates. The Gunners have now won their last 12 home games as Mesut Ozil once again starred with a goal in the 72nd minute. Oliver Giroud also scored a double in the rout. Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney netted a hat-trick, including an incredible strike from inside his own half, as Everton thrashed West Ham 4-0 at Goodison Park while incoming boss Sam Allardyce watched on from the stands. Chelsea kept pace with Man United at the head of the pack, beating Swansea 1-0 to stay third. - PA

Paddon to race in NZ

Jim Richards at Bathurst.

Rally star Hayden Paddon is set to contest only half the events on the WRC calendar next year but will make up a full programme by competing more back home in 2018. The Hyundai factory driver finds himself in essentially a carsharing position with Spaniard Dani Sordo with the team running Thierry Neuville and Norway’s Andreas Mikkelsen fulltime. With a contract that states a fulltime WRC drive Paddon had an opportunity to challenge the Korean manufacturer in court or pursue an opportunity to drive at a rival team but the 30-year-old felt that option was too risky. - NZME

■ OPINION

Folau robbed of ‘world’s best player’ title

I

t is probably a good thing the World Rugby Awards don’t actually count for anything, because I believe they screwed up a bit this year. It was great to see all the women and women’s teams recognised for their contributions to the game, and despite him not believing it himself, Eddie Jones did deserve the coach of the year award. However, where I think they missed the mark, by quite a bit, was in naming Beauden Barrett player of the year. There is no doubting he is electric and one of the best in the world on his day, but to say

over the entire season he was the best is reaching a bit. As treasonous as it may sound, I would have awarded the title to Israel Folau. He may have come out with some interesting views on samesex marriage, but he has been a bright point in what was often a dismal Australian set-up. He was one of the players the All Blacks truly feared this year, and that is entirely justifiable. It is a hard thing quantifying how a rugby player has performed, but I think most can agree that the magic dust Barrett sprinkled last season just wasn’t quite there this year.

Jaime Pitt-MacKay SPORTS REPORTER

It is easy in sports like basketball, where they nearly have a stat for everything, or football where most things can be measured, rugby is limited to tries, tackles and points scored for goal-kickers, but they aren’t exactly used all that often. Rugby is a very opinionated sport, especially in New Zealand,

where everyone thinks they know what is right for the team. If Barrett is “the best player” in the world, well then that is great, but what really makes him better than Reiko Ioane, Folau, Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje? I think the true test will be when it comes around to the New Zealand rugby awards, where I believe there is a very realistic chance we might see the world player of the year not win the New Zealand player of the year gong. I think Ioane has a very good shout, while players like Sam Whitelock or Ryan Crotty have been vital to the ABs this year.

■ RUGBY

Tonga targets All Blacks Tonga have their eye on two former All Blacks for the 2019 World Cup. Charles Piutau has indicated he wants to play for Tonga in Japan and Frank Halai is also on the radar. Piutau is set to become the world’s highest paid rugby player after signing for English club Bristol from Irish club Ulster for a reported $1.8 million for the 2018-19 season. The 26-year-old had 17 test caps for the All Blacks between 2013 and 2015, but was overlooked for the last World Cup squad after signing for Ulster. Tonga coach Toutai Kefu told Radio New Zealand that the former Tonga Under 20s representative was keen and would add real quality. “I’ve spoken to him a few times and his brother as well – he’s very determined to play for Tonga so we’re very happy about that,” he said. Kefu said Piutau will be joining a club that had the interests of Pacific Island players at heart. Former Blues coach Pat Lam had a strong Pacific influence on his playing roster. “Pat Lam really understands our plight and understands that these Pacific Islander players are very keen to play for their country whenever possible.” Winger Halai is playing in France for Pau after transferring from Wasps. He had one test for the All Blacks in 2013. Kefu said Halai was very interested in playing at the World Cup for Tonga. “There’s also some ex Wallabies – Sitaleki Timani and also Antho-

Former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick believes that while the All Blacks are in good stead heading into the 2019 World Cup, he sees Scotland as a genuine threat at the tournament. The 92-test legend said he was impressed at both the depth of talent throughout New Zealand rugby, as well as the development of fringe and back up players within the All Blacks squad. “I think the All Blacks are in pretty good shape. The last 12 months they’ve lost three games, which is pretty unusual for us. But I think they’ll be pretty happy in terms of the calibre of player that wasn’t involved in the autumn and during the Rugby Championship. - NZME

Parker/Joshua closer A highly anticipated world title fight between Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua could be confirmed in a matter of weeks. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said that negotiations are down to “single digit” percentages. Parker and promoter David Higgins laid out their final negotiating position in Auckland last week, asking for 35 per cent of the bout’s net profits. It’s been tipped that the two will fight at London’s O2 Arena in March. - NZME

76ers down Wizards Ben Simmons has posted an NBA career-high 31 points and 18 rebounds to lead his Philadelphia 76ers to a 118-113 win over the Washington Wizards. Joel Embiid had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Dario Saric added 24 points to help the Sixers (12-8) win for the sixth time in their last eight games. Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 22 points and Bradley Beal and Jodie Meeks each had 21 for the Wizards (11-10), who have lost five of their last seven and were without injured star John Wall. - AAP

Female AFL soaring Women now account for 30 per cent of Australian Football participants following the success of the inaugural AFL women’s competition. The AFL announced yesterday that overall participation has reached a record high with more than 1.5 million players – up more than 10 per cent in the past 12 months. The figures for female participation across all levels increased by 22 per cent to 463,364, and now reflects 30 per cent of the total. - AAP Charles Piutau is likely to become the highest paid rugby player in the world. ny Fainga’a – there’s a few more as well but that’s just the few names that scratch the surface.” Players who have represented their country’s top or second 15-a-side team or senior sevens team can switch allegiance to another nation, provided they have a passport for the second coun-

try and have completed a threeyear stand down. The first time a player represents their new country must be in an Olympic event, which can include Olympic qualifying tournaments and the 2018/19 World Series. But Tonga are not on the main World Sevens circuit.

“We would have to come through the Oceania sevens qualifying tournaments, which at this stage we’re not quite sure where they’re going to be held,” he said. “They just have to play two tournaments I think ... they just have to be Olympic qualifying tournaments.” - NZME

Backtrack on wrist messages from World Rugby World Rugby has backed down slightly on its policy of banning personal messages on wrist strapping for the upcoming World Sevens series. Players will be allowed to write

ABs ‘in good shape’

messages on strapping tape this weekend after a directive banning them was widely criticised. Players argued they often put family initials on their wrists to use as motivation during games.

In a statement World Rugby said they have adopted a common-sense approach and player messages will be permitted on wrist strapping for the opening round in Dubai.

Team managers will police it. World Rugby said it is not a new policy and has been operational for several seasons after aligning with the Olympic environment before the Rio Games. - NZME

NFL to fork out $145m The NFL is seeking an agreement with its players that they will stand for the national anthem, with the league proposing to contribute nearly $US100 million ($NZ145m) to causes considered important to African-American communities. The NFL proposed joining with its players in a bid to spur social justice change, although not all players are on board with the proposal. The NFL wants players to stand for the anthem in return and put an end to the controversial movement that former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began last season. Players are expected to discuss the proposal during a conference call today. If they accept the proposal, then the owners would vote to complete the deal at the annual league meetings in March. - PA

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ve earned the chutzpah you have, but you need more for what you want. You don’t get to have the confidence for free. The price of confidence is doing what scares you. First you dare; then you become daring. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It’s hard to put a price on learning. If you gain one insight that changes you, makes you think differently, gives you a degree of comfort or inspires you to be more, whatever brought you to that was worthwhile. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s something you keep locked away in your heart that’s become part of you, reflected in your every move. Take it out; re-examine; and decide if it still belongs there. If not, toss it. If so, polish and return. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): What keeps you good even when you don’t feel like being good? Principles. Your principles will now be the restraint keeps you on the path of being the best possible version of yourself. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Everything moves, not necessarily forward. Some backward slides are a positive relaxation of hypervigilance. Some backward slides are dangerous regression. Know the difference. In the latter, take preventive action. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): If you believed that whatever or whomever you’d like to add to your life was possibile, what would you do to get ready? Do that. Because with this kind of clearly defined wish, amazing things can happen. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It’s hard for some to clock the moves you’re making, because you’re going too fast for them. You’re a blur! There’s no reason to slow down, either, since there are plenty at your pace who will keep you company. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): When you write your priorities down, much will become clear about your life, what’s working and what’s not. Today, the tictac-toe model will work well. If you have more than nine priorities, it’s too many. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Some people don’t know the value of a thing until other people point it out. But if it’s not apparent to them, is it really valuable or not? Maybe good things are only good to those who see the goodness. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When others throw stones at your ideas, don’t even bother throwing them back. It’s a waste of time and energy. Collect the stones as if they were a gift. Use them to build your empire. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your cravings will be informants that point to an underlying need, a nutrient that your diet is lacking or an emotional nutrient that is absent in your life. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You may not know exactly what you want to do now, and that’s OK. As long as you have a framework that guides you, you’ll be in a fine position. Opportunity will arise that you had no idea was possible.

Sport Hudson lands on his feet Former All Whites coach Anthony Hudson has been named the new manager of Major League Soccer club the Colorado Rapids. Hudson, 36, resigned after three years at the All Whites helm when New Zealand’s 2018 World Cup bid ended in a 2-0 defeat in a two-leg qualifier earlier this month. Hudson, who guided the All Whites to nine wins, seven draws and 11 losses during his time in charge, said he was looking forward to the challenge of coaching in the MLS. “It’s an exciting moment and a wonderful opportunity,” Seattle-born Hudson said

Title hopes in tatters The world surfing championship hopes of Sally Fitzgibbons hang in the balance after a shock elimination from the season-ending Maui Pro. The Australian, chasing a maiden world title, was knocked out in the second round by local wildcard Brisa Hennessy in a stunning upset. The defeat means Fitzgibbons – a three-time world championship runner-up – now needs other results to fall her way to secure the title. Defending world champion Tyler Wright can claim the title if she finishes fifth or better.

Mid Canterbury’s best tennis players will get the chance to see how their big brothers from up the road do it when the Canterbury Premier Interclub Tennis competition rolls into town on Saturday. The Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre will play host to games between Canterbury’s top six men’s club teams and top four women’s clubs teams.

One of the highlights of the games will be a rematch of last year’s men’s final between Cashmere and Elmwood. One match in the clash will also be a rematch of the Canterbury Open final when Cashmere’s James Meredith and Elmwood’s Hayden Joblin trade blows. There was little to separate the pair last time out, with Meredith coming out the victor after three sets.

Lazarus should be a winner tonight P31

Two top local tennis talents will be in action in the women’s matches, with Canterbury Open champion Tessa McCann representing the Cashmere side, while Ashleigh Leonard will be representing the Hagley Park team. Last year’s finalists Elmwood and Waimari will face off, with Canterbury Open finalist and Elmwood player Emily Martin playing Waimari’s Joelene Feneon.

“This provides a fantastic opportunity to see some of New Zealand’s top tennis players competing in Ashburton,” Mid Canterbury Tennis president Neil McCann said. “There will be some exciting singles and doubles matches on court to watch.” The matches start at 1.30pm on Saturday, with free entry. The change means that the local open interclub competition will start at 11am.

Sterling leaves it late Premier League leaders Manchester City snatched a late win as they beat Southampton 2-1 to reopen an eightpoint lead at the top of the Premier League. Raheem Sterling was the hero for the second match running, snatching a 12th straight league victory for Pep Guardiola’s side with the winner in the sixth minute of injury time. “It was an astonishing end to the game,” Guardiola said. “It means a lot. At the end our momentum kept going, Raheem scored a fantastic goal.”
