Firefighters frantic across district By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Firefighters across the Ashburton District were stretched to the max on Thursday night as they battled new and old vegetation fires in high winds. Firefighters were called back to the scene of large vegetation fire next to State Highway 1 multiple times overnight while 10 appliances and a command unit were required to fight a large vegetation fire in the Mayfield area. Units were called to the Tanks Road area to fight a large vegetation fire at around 10.19pm which spread to an area of 250m by 25m at its largest. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess said units from Ashburton, Ashburton rural, Willowby, Mayfield, Mt Somers and Hinds all attended the fire along with a command unit from Timaru. “With that size of fire and the terrain it was helpful to have it there managing people,” he said. “They were working close to a pit and had to be very cautious in that environment.” Burgess said high winds had made it difficult to battle the blaze, with the first units not being released from the scene until after 2am, with a crew left behind overnight to dampen down hotspots. Deputy principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said it appeared that the fire had been caused by the re-ignition of fire in a rubbish

pit from around a month ago. “There is a very strong message there that if you have been burning during the past several months go out and check that it is fully extinguished,” he said. Crews were also called to two flare-ups of the fire that burnt through 300m of roadside vegetation by State Highway 1 on Thursday afternoon. The first time crews were called
back was just before 9.20pm on Thursday evening before being called back a second time at around 1.10am. Burgess said there would have been no issues without the wind, but strong winds had fuelled hotspots that normally would not have presented any issues. “There was always that element that we only needed a couple of weeks of dry weather and the ma-
terial is definitely there to burn,” he said. Burgess said he had been talking with Fenz Mid/South Canterbury Area Commander Steven Greenyer at 1am and at that time between Rakaia and Glenavy there were only two appliances left on station. “It was certainly a bit of a juggling act,” he said. At 6am on Friday morning fire-
fighters were called to a fire in a stubble paddock that had spread to straw bales in the Lauriston area. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Brent Anderson said 100 bales of straw were burnt by the fire. “It is suspected that the powerlines arced and dropped sparks into the stubble paddock which started a fire and spread to the stack of bales,” he said. Crews from Lauriston, Methven and a tanker from Rakaia extinguished the bales with the help from a digger, breaking the bales up and spreading them out over already burnt ground to let them burn out. “You could put 100,000 litres of water on bales like that and come back in the morning and they would still be burning so that’s the most efficient way to do it,” he said. Not long after had Methven crews returned to the station at around 10am they were called out to another fire in the Alford Forest area where a pit fire had jumped out, igniting vegetation on the farm and alongside the RDR. Geddes said the fire risk around Ashburton is very high and high closer to the hills, but that the district would be staying on a restricted fire season. “All of these fires would’ve happened whether we were on a restricted fire season or a prohibited fire season,” he said.
Distinct shortage of high level dementia care beds By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
A shortage of high level dementia care beds in Ashburton is forcing families to find care facilities out of town for relatives. Several people spoken to by the Guardian said the need to place a family member in care in either Christchurch or Timaru had been stressful and it also meant they incurred significant travel costs. Maureen Maginness was forced to move her late husband
Langtry to a Christchurch facility when he was assessed as needing to move from resthome dementia care to hospital level dementia care. There were no vacant beds in Ashburton at that time, she said, and Christchurch was the only option. For her having her husband moved to care in Christchurch meant an end to her daily visits, and that loss of daily contact was very difficult to accept for the couple. She knows of others forced to
move family members in need of greater care out of town and said she had spoken to several, all of whom found the experience stressful. “If your partner ends up in Christchurch and you’re not driving it means you can’t visit and even if you do drive, it’s a strain and an expense driving up and down,” Maginness said. There are just 12 D6 (needs care) level beds in Ashburton and Maginness believes that falls well short of actual need.
Princes Court is a dedicated dementia care home with 35 beds, but these are at resthome level, D3, rather than D6 hospital level, said facility manager Lorraine Bryan. “Our people are still mobile, still getting about and I believe we’re meeting the need at this level,” she said. Hospital level dementia care requires a registered nurse to be on site around the clock. Tuarangi Home is the only facility in Ashburton offering D6
level care. It has 12 beds and these are usually all occupied, said manager Bestin Baby. “Most of the time D6 beds are in high demand,” he said. If there were no vacancies for people requiring this level of care, Baby said they worked with family to find the best out of town options. He agreed there was a definite need for more beds at D6 level. Other Ashburton aged care facilities offering dementia care do this at resthome level only.

Saving his neighbour all in a day’s travels for Leigon S
ix-year-old Leigon Reuben is always on the go. He’s the type of kid that wherever the action is in his neighbourhood at Hampstead, he will be there. If there’s children playing, Leigon will be joining in; if there’s adults talking, he will come along and say hi. It’s the sort of behaviour that has endeared him to everyone on his street, but can be a cause of worry for his mum Hayley Tunnicliffe. Leigon’s high activity levels are associated with global learning development delay, and Tunnicliffe, a single mum of three, struggles to keep her eye on her son at all times. “I’m so lucky I have such good people in my neighbourhood, they look out for him,” she said. “They love him, they look out for him, and the five minutes I haven’t got my eyes on him, half the neighbourhood has seen him.” She is considering installing fencing to keep Leigon on the section, and recently got him a kitten which he named Peke. Tunnicliffe had hoped the cute tabby might focus Leigon’s attention at home. However, while the pair have indeed become inseparable, Peke has an adventurous streak, and they are just as likely to be seen out and about as they are playing at home. But being super-active can have its advantages, as it did recently when Leigon was in a position to be able to assist an elderly neighbour in dire need of help. While Leigon has difficulties with short-term memory, he likes order and routine, and will notice things that are different or out of place. So it was that Leigon became aware of a medical alert bracelet on the wrist of the elderly neighbour, when he was party to a conversation on the street between

the man and another neighbour, who is also a family friend. The family friend, who did not want to be named, remembers the conversation clearly. She said she was talking to the elderly neighbour outside his home near his car as he returned home from a hospital visit. She made mention of the man’s medical alert bracelet, and Leigon became curious about it, so the family friend explained to the boy what it was used for. “He likes to meet people and he also likes to know lots,” the family

friend said. Fast forward to this week, on January 27, when Leigon came home about 3.50pm to report to his mother about noticing uncollected mail in the letterbox of the elderly neighbour, that the man was sick, and that he pushed the man’s “button”. “I didn’t really think much of it, and next thing I hear the fire engine,” Tunnicliffe said. Tunnicliffe said she had not been aware of the elderly neighbour having one of the medical alert bracelets, and her imme-
diate thought upon hearing the siren was that perhaps Leigon had pressed something he was not supposed to, such as a fire alarm in the man’s house. “I was afraid to go outside,” Tunnicliffe said. Once she did venture outside, she saw emergency services assisting the neighbour. St John said the patient was taken to Ashburton Hospital in a serious condition. Talking to Leigon since, and neighbours, Tunnicliffe has pieced together what must have

happened. She believes Leigon noticed the man’s mail had not been cleared from his letterbox that morning. Thinking this was out of place, he went to investigate. Finding the man unconscious inside his home, he pressed the bracelet button. Leigon was too busy playing to respond to this reporter’s questions, but when talking to his mum and his friends at times throughout the week, he has confirmed this is what happened. He has said that he found the man lying down and had pressed the bracelet button, and he even went so far as to tell one close friend that he saved a man’s life. A St John spokesperson said they understood that the ambulance attending the call-out about 3.50pm on Monday was alerted by the man’s medical alarm/bracelet. However, as it was not a St John medical alarm, the spokesperson was unable to confirm those details, and the company believed to administer the bracelet could not provide any confirmation due to privacy reasons. Leigon and the family friend have since gone to visit the elderly neighbour, who does not remember his ordeal but is making a good recovery in hospital, and hopes to be back home soon. In the meantime, Leigon’s reputation as a child who looks out for others is spreading. He is not just the friendly wee boy who is always around every nook and cranny of the neighbourhood, but someone who is caring and who will notice if something is out of place, and if someone is not okay. “He knows everything that’s going on, he’s like our community watch,” the family friend said.

■■NEW ZEALAND POLICE
Police issue scams warning Police are reminding New Zealanders to be extra vigilant when receiving unsolicited phone calls, especially when the caller asks for personal details or money. A number of scams are operating nationwide at any one time and, while some of the details vary, the general premise is often the same.
In one recent case, a man lost $57,000 to a caller claiming to be from Spark. The man was told his internet would be disconnected unless he logged onto his computer and followed their instructions. In another well-tested scam, a woman narrowly escaped losing more than
$12,000 after receiving a call about suspicious bank transactions. The woman was told she had been over payed by the bank when it reimbursed her for purchases she hadn’t made. Fortunately, the bank was able to put a stop to the transfer.
Conditions put pressure on feed and gardens By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Federated Farmers is reminding Mid Canterbury farmers to get in early to make sure they have enough feed as the possibility of autumn drought looms. The district has had its driest January for 81 years, after just 10.6 millimetres of rainfall in Ashburton, measured at the Ashburton Domain, for the month as of yesterday. The last time there was a drier January was in 1939, when 7.9 millimetres of rain was measured at the site. The long-term average for the town in January, according to the MetService, is more than 57 millimetres. The big dry is set to deepen in the coming few days with temperatures in Ashburton climbing to 28 degrees Celsius today, 34 tomorrow and 33 on Monday. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury provincial president David Clark said harvest conditions were “absolutely fantastic”, however, feed growth for livestock farmers had slowed right up. The conditions raised the probability of an autumn drought, something which had not been common in Mid Canterbury since the 1980s and 1990s. Mid Canterbury was lucky to have such a large area of irrigation sheltering the district and its economy from the full effects of drought, he said. He urged farmers needing straw to plan ahead, as thousands of bales were going to the North Island due to increased demand in drought conditions there, as well as Australia and Asia. “Feed will never be cheaper than it is the day that it falls on the ground behind the baler,” Clark said. “Work out what you need for the winter, get on and buy it now.” Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann said the dry conditions were putting pressure on council gardens. Open spaces staff members who would usually be busy mowing this time of year, were instead driving around with tanks of water and hand-hosing stressed plants. “They are going around and keeping all our plants watered and alive. We are just looking forward to some rain,” McCann said. Meanwhile, MetService meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree said there was no significant rain in the forecast, although there could be some precipitation on Tuesday and Wednesday this coming week. “You might see some showers, but they are not going to be very significant,” she said.

Railyard relocation still on radar By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The relocation of Ashburton’s inner town shunting yard to an out of town site has been on the drawing board for decades, but that move is still high on the Ashburton District Council’s wish list. At Thursday’s community services committee meeting, mayor Neil Brown indicated the relocation project was far from dead. “I’ve had the odd meeting with people who’re looking at rail and looking at the move. Hopefully by the end of this year we’ll have some certainty around the move,” he said. Dialogue was on-going and it was his feeling that something would happen in that space, Brown said. The council’s economic development manager Bevan Rickerby, believed there was universal agreement in business circles that the rail hub move was desirable, but said that there appeared to be little appetite for this to happen from Kiwi Rail’s perspective. The council, however, was ensuring dialogue was continuing, he said. “It’s an eyesore and it’s a long way from where businesses would like it to be and
the rail head is not as effective as it could be; it needs to be upgraded.” In 2000 there were indications the rail head could be relocated withing two years. Seven years later nothing had happened but it gained traction in 2007 when plans were drawn up for the development of the Ashburton Business Park. This was viewed as a logical location for a rail yard. By 2008 the project was still alive and had been given a three-year time frame for implementation but a year later it was dealt a death blow when the $6 million ear-marked on a regional transport plan for the work was scrapped, with the national land transport plan for the following three years signed off. In 2015 when a water bottling plant was on the radar for a site in the business park, the rail head relocation was given new life with the developer of that project signalling this would be a key element of his development. At that time the estimated cost had risen from $8 million to $10 million. The water bottling plant did not eventuate and that meant the rail head relocation did not proceed. The council has not ear-marked money in its 10 year plan for this work.
Lilyfields in full bloom Lilyfields in Mt Somers will be opening their gates and welcoming in the public today for an open day to view their latest crops. Wendy Millichamp said they used to open regularly from Boxing Day onwards in the summer but due to growing most of their stock off-site they had stopped. Millichamp estimated around 3000 lilies were currently on the property at 50 Hoods Road in Mt Somers, with the flowers a happy by-product of their growing and selling operation which focuses on the bulbs. The lilies have enjoyed the dry, hot summer, preferring to grow in well draining soil. PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 310120-JPM-0006

Farmers smiling in the dry
In brief Human remains? A digger driver has uncovered what is thought to be human remains while working at a property in Mount Eden, Auckland, yesterday. Police have cordoned off an address on Marlborough St following the discovery of “an object of interest”, a police spokesman said. “Initial enquiries indicate the object may be human remains. The property has been cordoned off and police will remain at the address while further enquiries take place.” The object was found in the ground by a digger driver as they worked on the site. A run of hot, dry days through January has Mid Canterbury arable farmers smiling, with crops harvested to date yielding higher than last year. The grass seed harvest is well under way, while the main cereal harvest is close to starting. Wakanui farmer Guy Slater, who harvested a 30 hectare paddock of a turf type tall fescue on Wednesday, said grass seed yields were half a tonne up on last year. “Yields of 2.5 tonnes/ha are not uncommon.” Seed weights were also up on last year. “We are very happy with the harvest. I’m happy when we get sun in January and that is what we have had.” Slater said his family had started windrowing grass seed crops on January 10 and it was unusual to get such a clear run of 20 fine days in a row. “It’s one of the better harvests we have had for three or four years.” While Slater also grows cereals and potatoes, as well as process peas and sweetcorn for Talleys, he specialises in growing turf type grasses, with 200ha grown. Cop on driving charges
Initiative highlights youth job opportunities
A young police officer will argue she should avoid a conviction after running a red light and crashing into another car, injuring two people. The 21-year-old cop admitted two charges of careless driving causing injury when she appeared for the first time in the Auckland District Court yesterday. Charges were laid against the constable, who has interim name suppression, earlier this month after an incident on Great South Riad in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa on July 21 last year. Two people, a man and a woman, were injured in the crash, according to court documents. The injured man was another police officer in the patrol car. A good supply of young, local people taking up employment options in the Ashburton District is key to continued business growth, employers say. There are not enough young people entering the local workforce, however, and Ashburton’s economic development manager Bevan Rickerby has a plan to change that and introduce a programme called Mynextmove to the district’s secondary schools. He presented details of the Mynextmove project, designed to build enhanced relationships between the local business community and the district’s second-

It starts by taking to students at year nine when most have no idea what they want to do when they come out the other end.” Because schools had a strong focus on university students were often not aware of the job and training opportunities available in their own community, he said. An example of that was the perception many students had of a career in agriculture as simply mucking out dairy sheds, when the reality was very different,

Rickerby said. “We want to get the information out early so they realise what’s available on their home patch.” Mynextmove is tailored to individual student needs and works in partnership with existing in school careers and training educators. Rickerby provides the link between schools and businesses to ensure consistent messages are being delivered and that businesses involved are committed to the success of the programme. Both Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College have indicated their support for the programme, which has been running in South Canterbury since

Dog bite ends dramatic car chase NZME A patched Mongrel Mob member is licking his wounds in Dunedin Hospital after being bitten by a police dog following a dramatic car chase. On Thursday night, after refusing to stop for police, the 30-yearold Invercargill man learned the hard way police dog handlers
were “highly motivated” to target and apprehend high-profile offenders, Sergeant Mike Calvert, of Dunedin said. “It was good team work – but there were four dog handlers there,” he said. “Police dogs have a unique ability to target and apprehend offenders.” In this case, on Thursday night,
Coronavirus: NZ’s first suspected case NZME A person is being held in isolation with the first suspected case of coronavirus in New Zealand. Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield yesterday confirmed a patient in Auckland City Hospital was being tested for new virus which has killed more than 200 in China. The results are expected today. “They have a special isolation room in the hospital and it has what’s called ‘negative pressure ventilation’. That basically stops the possibility of the virus being carried out in the air,” Bloomfield said. The person is thought to have come forward themselves and Bloomfield encouraged anyone else with symptoms to do the same. The announcement came after a meeting of the Government’s top executives, the Officials Committee for Domestic and External Security Co-ordination, at the Beehive on Friday afternoon. Bloomfield said officials were still hammering out the details of a possible evacuation of New Zealanders from the city of Wuhan – the centre of China’s coronavirus outbreak. The Government on Thursday revealed it was chartering an Air New Zealand flight to bring home Kiwis caught in the lockdown in the region, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed more than 100 have asked to come home. But details remain sparse, with no decisions announced about when the flight may happen, where and how those brought back may be quarantined or whether permissions has been granted by the Chinese Government. “I can say there is an awful lot of working going into the logistics of getting the flight into China,” Bloomfield said. Ardern earlier said some countries had waited as long as a week to get clearance to remove the citizens. New Zealand was also considering ways to use the flight to help those from neighbouring Pacific nations if spaces were available, she said. While the World Health Organisation on Friday morning declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, the Ministry of Health says the announcement doesn’t mean there will be any changes to New Zealand’s current efforts. “What it does is it emphasises and endorses the actions New Zealand has taken to date,” Bloomfield told reporters. “We have acted very much in line with the WHO advice.” There would be no urgent changes to how flights arriving from areas hit by the outbreak were being screened or travel restrictions, Bloomfield said.
after he allegedly drove his car over road spikes, the mob member was nabbed – unable to climb a fence before suffering bite wounds when he ran from his vehicle. He ran for all of 300m before he was arrested by the dog handlers, he said. The driver was spotted in what police believed to be a stolen car
about 11.10pm in Central Dunedin just as four dog handlers had just finished a dog training day. He failed to stop in Central Dunedin, and continued through Mornington before ending up in Kaikorai Valley, Green Island and Corstorphine. Police in Playfair St deployed road spikes, which initially did not stop the car.
The driver continued along South Rd until the car became undriveable on Glen Rd. “As he decamped, the police dogs apprehended him as he was going over the fence trying to get on to the motorway.” He was wanted on “numerous” charges, but would now also face a raft of driving charges, Sgt Calvert said.

■■METHVEN MUSEUM
First a hospital then a morgue? By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
Being a dark, dusty, static museum is something the Methven Museum can never be accused of. Every three months, committee members come up with new display ideas. Committee member Sandy Redmond said the size of the museum means it is not possible to have their whole collection on display, but a little shuffling here and there can make all the difference. “By changing the central display every three months or so, we can bring different items into the museum,” Redmond said The Methven Cottage Hospital idea, also referred to as Methven Maternity Home, came to Redmond when she was in the storage area one day and had to shift the heavy butlers sink for what felt like the hundredth time. Inspiration also came from the old hospital hours sign tucked away in the corner. The sign lists some very formidable rules; husbands only between 7pm to 8pm, visitors are not permitted to smoke on the wards and during the first five days visitors are strictly limited to mother, mother-inlaw, or close relative such as a sister. “From there on it was a matter of pulling threads together until I had enough for a display,” said Redmond. While that might sound quite simple, Methven Historical Society research archivist, Angela Grieve said it was deceiving. “There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into putting on a display like this,” she said. All relevant items need to be gathered up, labelled and often have origin and use descriptions written plus stories and articles need researched and typed up. “Then there is all the time taken up emailing, researching and driving into Ashburton to do further research. It can all take months, Sandy has done a great job.” The maternity hospital opened in 1922 after three years of lobbying the Ashburton Hospital Board by a group of persistent Methven locals headed by a Mr J. Carr. Among the arguments Carr put forward was how a man with a high fever had to be taken to Ashburton Hospital in an open car, the man died. Carr told them Methven needed a morgue as well. “About eighteen months ago a body was placed in a Methven noose box overnight. The next morning it was found that rats had been gnawing at the body,” reports show he said.

The Ashburton Hospital Board had heard enough of rats and sick people being driven around in open cars and agreed to buy the land on the corner of Morgan and Allington Streets to build a maternity home. Whilst primarily a maternity hospital there was some early chat around making it a general hospital as well, but that idea was squashed by the Ashburton Hospital Board so never happened. Doctors did treat the occasional minor emergency case, providing the patient did not have any kind of sepsis. The little hospital continued on merrily delivering babies until 1968 when economics forced it to close. “The cost of running the hospital had always been a big issue and it had narrowly escaped closure a few times in the past.” However, the advent of better roads between Methven and Ashburton and improved cars saw many expectant mothers choosing to deliver in the larger Ashburton Maternity ward. A hospital losing money is not what any hospital board wants so the
decision was made to close it. Naturally the story doesn’t end there. In the 1970s another group of equally determined locals were back badgering the hospital board. Led by Natalie Currie, convenor of the newly formed Friends of the Home, they stepped up and presented the board with the idea of buying the disused building off them. Again, the battle looked like it was lost until a very timely donation from Miss Jean Wightman saved the day. Her generosity allowed a delegation of Methven House supporters to travel to Wellington and present their proposal to purchase the land and buildings off the Hospital Board. The museum would love to hear from anybody who was born in the maternity hospital or has a work connection with it. “Records of staff and babies born at the hospital are a bit sketchy, so call in to the museum and sign the list we have running. While you are here you can practice folding cloth nappies or brush up on your bandaging skills,” Grieve said.

option has led to less meat consumption. Impossible Whopper sales were not cutting into regular Whopper sales, UBS analyst Steven Strycula told Bloomberg in December. New Zealand meat-consumption data from the OECD shows that Kiwis continue to love their meat, despite a decline in redmeat consumption. In 2019, New Zealanders ate 74.9kg of red meat, sheep meat, poultry and pork per capita. This is up significantly from 66.7kg in 2010. What these numbers show is that New Zealanders aren’t necessarily changing their carnivorous ways; it’s simply a case of our animal preferences changing. Chicken just happens to be the meat of choice these days. This is not the first time that marketing behind new food brands has promised a sea change that didn’t quite materialise. Several years ago, the fastcasual food scene was hurtling ahead and predictions about the imminent demise of fast-food giants like McDonald’s and KFC

were thrown around regularly. This narrative was further buoyed by viral documentaries like Super Size Me that drove home the message that fast food was terrible for you. It looked only a matter of time before the fast-food empire came crashing down. Fast-forward a few years, and today the likes of McDonald’s and KFC continue to hum along just fine, while Subway closed more than 1000 stores in the US last year. It’s notable that despite the hype machine behind the alternative-meat scene, the veritable godfather of fast-food, McDonald’s, has taken a more cautious approach, thus far not launching a fake-meat range. Part of the reason why the fakemeat companies have been so effective at capturing the imagination of the public lies in the damn good story they’ve told. They’ve come swashbuckling into the market, positioning themselves as the hero against the villains of the meat industry. And as with any good yarn, there is an element of truth to this. The hype machine will keep churning out great headlines about cultural change and the meat-free future. But don’t hold your breath. History has shown time and again that change generally happens far slower than what the most enthusiastic voices might suggest. Especially when it comes to what we eat.

The fake-meat hype machine just hit some snags Two interesting pieces of fakemeat news slipped through the wires in the past couple of weeks. The first was that fast-food giant Burger King had slashed the prices of its Impossible Whopper as sales of the faux-meat burgers started to dip after last year’s introduction. And the second, even more extreme, was the decision by Tim Hortons to pull all Beyond Meat products from its coffee and doughnut shops across two of Canada’s biggest provinces. The news had an immediate impact on Beyond Meat, knocking almost 4 per cent off the stock that soared more than four-fold since the company went public last year. This marks a big reality check for these companies as well as all others built on the faux-meat promise that we’re in the middle of a “cultural shift” which is seeing consumers turn away from actual meat. There is certainly a growing trend of vegetarianism in some segments of society, but there’s also some evidence that the overall impact has been somewhat overstated. Americans, for instance, are eating more real meat than ever. Total red meat and poultry consumption is expected to rise to 102kg per person this year from 101kg in 2019, according to USDA data. Even at Burger King, there’s no evidence that the meat-free
use of alternative funding structures as New Zealand’s banks respond to the capital requirements. “With very few IPOs completed in the last 12 months, we predict the slowing of listings to continue with more businesses turning to other sources of equity,” the firm said. The regulator’s view may have changed on the basis that online retail provides price competition in many duty free categories these days and there’s more price visibility and transaction capability across duty free retailers, he says in his latest note on the airport. It’s a reasonable issue for the airport as duty free contributes close to half of the company’s retail income, despite that contribution having fallen in recent years. Bowley says going duty free solo could be worth an additional $14 million per annum, or roughly 3 per cent of group net profit, of concession income to Auckland Airport.

The biggest challenge for the NZX is the ASX, Silvana Schenone, head of MinterEllisonRuddWatts’ corporate division, says. “We are seeing a very aggressive ASX targeting New Zealand companies, targeting fewer listings, but also exclusive ASX listings,” she said. “They have the resources,” Schenone said at the release of the firm’s latest report on mergers and acquisitions for 2020. Rival law firm Chapman Tripp said in a report released this week that New Zealand equity capital markets were showing signs of a revival. “We have a different view,” Schenone said. “Generally, there is a higher level of caution emerging within the market.” Chapman Tripp saw the last year’s NZX listing of Napier Port, and the support it gained from Australian institutions, as a sign of confidence in the exchange.
IPOs any more “because the process is hard and expensive” even though there are initiatives to simplify the process. “If there is any hope for the capital markets in New Zealand it’s going to be around the environment, social and governance products,” she said, pointing to the growing popularity of green bonds. In its report, MinterEllisonRuddWatts said New Zealand’s M&A activity was expected to slow down in 2020, with processes taking longer, and some deals failing to complete. But the firm predicts a settling of the market and further adjustment where deals are being perceived as expensive. It also sees increased M&A activity in the financial services sector. There would be greater divestment activity by private equity firms, with at least 56 investments ripe for sale, based on traditional holding cycles of three to five years. There would also be increased

anuary, just in case you missed the memo, is gone. Done, dusted – completed for another 12 month period. And if it feels a bit like you blinked and missed it then don’t worry, it would appear you’re not alone. The first few weeks of the year are always an interesting time, especially in this district. We tend to go from a bit of a hustling and bustling hive of activity through December where there is event after event on to keep things entertaining to somehow getting that image of tumbleweeds blowing down the middle of the main street through the first month of the year. It’s the same every year. No
matter what’s happening. January had its busy points, for sure – but it’s still been relatively quiet. But from today, almost as though someone realised that they forgot to turn the switch on come January 1 and they’ve suddenly clicked it with this district coming to life. We’ve gone from not much
happening to a whole heap happening in the space of a week as the sporting world goes from its sleeping state to full steam ahead and it looks set to maintain that momentum right through the month with some big ticket things on the horizon. It’s nice too, because we can’t use that excuse of still trying to get into swing of things for the year, we’ve been going for a while now and the cobwebs of the Christmas and New Year break should be well and truly blown out and most running at full steam. And things get better with some excellent weather in store too – especially looking into this weekend with Sunday being earmarked as a cracker of a day – if
not perhaps potentially just a little bit too hot. So, why not get out and enjoy what’s on offer. I hear people complain about there not being much to do around the district. There’s no excuses now – the options are, literally, endless. Take a drive up to the picturesque lakes, spend some time there, enjoy Mid Canterbury at its finest. Take a deck chair and go and perch up on the side of a sporting field and watch the future stars of the region do their thing in their chosen sports. Chances are, if you enjoy it – it’s probably happening. But with good weather, especially heat – there’s a need to be
careful too. We’ve seen in the past couple of days how busy our firefighters have been with the countryside becoming tinder dry and the risk of fire getting higher by the day. Thursday night and Friday night was particularly bad and it’d be nice to come back on Monday and see that those volunteers have been able to enjoy the weekend and relax a little instead of chasing flames and smoke around the district. So, enjoy Mid Canterbury. We really do have something for everyone, but do it safely and make sure you get the chance to do it all again in seven days’ time when another working week comes to an end.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Saturday, February 1, the 32nd day of 2020. There are 334 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry, killing all seven of its crew members: commander Rick Husband; pilot William McCool; payload commander Michael Anderson; mission specialists Kalpana Chawla, David Brown and Laurel Clark; and payload specialist Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli in space. On this date: In 1790, the US Supreme Court convened for the first time in New York. In 1842, The Fifeshire arrived in Nelson with immigrants for the New Zealand Company’s first settlement in the South Island, New Zealand. In 1862, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, a poem by Julia Ward Howe, was published in the Atlantic Monthly. In 1896, Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boheme premièred in Turin, Italy. In 1942, during World War Two, the Voice of America broadcast its first programme to Europe, relaying it through the facilities of the British Broadcasting Corp. in London. In 1943, during World War Two, one of America’s most highly decorated military units, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up almost exclusively of JapaneseAmericans, was authorised. In 1960, four black college students began a sit-in protest at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they’d been refused service. In 1962, the Ken Kesey novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was first published by Viking Press. t has always been a fascination. Discovering abandoned places that have long since felt the pulse of life. Probably my first experience was in the late sixties, possibly very early seventies, when a cobber and me ventured through a heavily wooded forest and discovered the old World War Two fuel dump at Bankside. It was a flabbergasting sight. After what seemed a reasonable trek through the trees, suddenly – there it was. A monumentally huge brick-lined hole in the ground. So surreal and unexpected. Further exploration in the nearby area revealed a concrete cap with a big pipe and with a ladder attached that went way down into the ground to a tunnel which in turn led out into the base of the large brick hole. We of course explored it fully and took the plunge to middle-earth. In those days there was no rubbish, no vandalism, no graffiti. It stood just as it had been left several decades earlier. In later years, as word spread, it became more well-known and was visited by many. In time it became a dumping ground of old car bodies and junk which had been tipped over the side and plunged to the bottom. And, as the Canterbury Plains gave over to dairying, the forest around it was cleared until the cavernous pit was completely exposed. Then, in the glorious age of health and safety, authorities reportedly spent millions to clear the rubbish from it which they believed may contain hazardous substances. It is my understanding they found virtually nothing to cause any harm whatsoever. A glorious waste of money. The proverbial chucking of cash into a large black hole. The site remains to this day,

Seaview Mental Hospital cleaned up and fenced off to intruders. Protected as an historic place of interest. On my recent holiday roadie (reported two weeks ago) I made some further abandoned discoveries. To be fair, the first I had visited previously but that was some years back. High above Hokitika sits a spectacle right out of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. Over some considerable acreage, the former Seaview Mental Hospital is an assault on the senses. Dozens of wooden buildings, some quite large, are spread out over what looks like a ghost town in its own right. All have housed clinics, treatment spaces, medical staff, patients, and accommodation. Founded way back in 1872, the establishment peaked in 1955 with 549 patients, until whittling down to just 22 “clients” when it finally closed in 2009. I’m guessing, by looking at it, much of it had been mothballed well before that as the level of decay is staggering. Paradoxically, there are small areas where the vista could be out of the movie Pearl Harbour with the big exotic trees, but beyond that, it’s just bleak. Overgrown, boarded-up and fascinating.
Apparently the swimming pool complex is still in-situ, although I didn’t find it. And it was no great trouble to take a look around. The driveable road progressively morphed into a weed-riddled tarseal track and there was no instruction anywhere not to afford oneself a cruise around the whole shebang. So I did. Stopping at intervals to capture images of my adventure. A Facebook post at the time turned up a surprising response from people I know who had worked there, or lived there with family who were staff there. Indeed, a small, albeit now unkempt, world. Eventually moving on, I ventured further south down the West Coast until encountering my next, and final, eye-popping spectacle. What the hell is that? Off to my right, and visible from the road, a desolate, overgrown, glorious what? I spun the car round and ventured back for a look. And a quick google. The former THC Franz Josef Hotel, situated on its own, just out of town, was in its day, the first modern accommodation on the West Coast. Along with other hotels built by THC at places such as Mt Cook, they were beautifully designed and
built to stamp a high standard on the tourist market. This one had subsequently passed into private hands but a quick bit of research on the side of the road revealed the story. Back as recently as March 2016 the adjacent river burst its banks in the middle of the night, causing a hasty abandonment of staff and guests and resulting in up to a metre and a half of water flowing right through the entire complex. Again, a collection of buildings resembling a small village. Once the waters had receded, a thick layer of silt remained throughout the complex and to this day there appears to be no way forward. Will it be repaired and reopened? If so, will it be safe from further flooding? Will it be insurable in the future? Will it be demolished? Who knows, but for now, observable from the side of the road, it is yet another fascinating example of the curious spectacle of decay. In response to the Letter to the Editor from Selwyn Price, Friday January 30. I am not sure where the writer has read that “I am not happy” with the Government’s infrastructure announcement, as I think it’s great news that Ashburton has been included in the infrastructure package. However, there were two projects not mentioned, the first being the second Ashburton urban bridge, and the second being the four-lane highway to Rolleston. The bridge has been on our books for many years and while

the project is progressing, I am disappointed that no funds have been allocated for the bridge project. I support Andrew Falloon, MP for Rangitata in advocating for a four-lane highway to Rolleston, as this road is the second most dangerous in the country. As mayor, I am advocating for all projects that keep our residents safe and add to our district’s prosperity. Our schools are getting their fair share of funding and I applaud the Government for this. The Methven hot pools funding allocation is a loan and will have to be repaid, but once again thanks to the Provincial Growth Fund for seeing the merit in this
project and lending the funds which will see this project completed after many years of planning. Billions of dollars have been spent in and around Christchurch but this was very much needed, as their city was partially destroyed in the devastating earthquakes of 2011 where over a hundred people lost their lives. Mr Price is correct that millions have been spent on the eradication of M. bovis in this district as that is where the most cases have been identified. I am sure that the affected farmers would rather that the money wasn’t needed at all and that they weren’t impacted by this devastating disease.
In addition, all farmers are contributing to the funding pool that is being spent to eradicate the disease for the benefit of the whole country. Neil Brown, Ashburton Mayor

■■CHINA
Breeding ground for virus There are fears the Wuhan coronavirus will spread to the province of Xinjiang, where more than one million Muslims are housed in China’s concentration camps. Experts have warned the camps would make a perfect breeding ground for the virus to grow and mutate based on overcrowding and squalid conditions. There are currently 6000 confirmed cases of the virus worldwide, and the number of suspected cases has risen to more than 9000. So far there’s no evidence the virus has infiltrated camps, but China’s state media has confirmed 10 cases of the virus present in the northwestern region, according to Radio Free Asia (RFA). Georgetown University professor of Chinese history James Millward said this could be a “massive disaster” based on the camp’s conditions. Adrian Zenz, one of the leading researchers on Xinjiang’s mass internment systems, similarly warned: “The coronavirus could add an entirely new dimension to the Xinjiang crisis.” There are growing fears among the Uighur community that if outbreaks hit the camps, the Chinese government could work to cover up the problem rather than be open about it, and potentially use detainees as “guinea pigs” to find a cure. Arslan Hidayat, an Australian Uighur activist, said the Uighur community worries they will take low priority for aid as the
virus continues spreading. “They’re barely getting enough for Han Chinese citizens, let alone getting it out to Xinjiang,” he said. “If it does end up spreading, the Uighurs won’t get the same kind of support that they’re getting in Wuhan and cities on the eastern seaboard.” But he holds an even more disturbing fear: that the Chinese government could conduct medical testing on detained Uighurs to produce an antidote. “They could use the Uighurs as guinea pigs to find a cure for the coronavirus. This is my worry,” he said. It’s already routine process for Xinjiang officials to gather blood samples from hundreds of Uighurs as part of a mass DNA collection effort, The New York Times reported last month. Uighurs who have fled the country have said officials routinely collected blood samples from hundreds of detainees under the veneer of a mandatory health checkup programme, which were filed and stored as part of the region’s “total surveillance” crackdown. Others say they were injected with unknown substances and forced to take medication without being told exactly what it was. As concerns amplify over the spreading coronavirus, the hashtag #VirusThreatInCamps has gone viral, with Uighurs voicing their concerns about what the spread could mean for family members detained
in the camps. Dolkun Isa, president of the World Uyghur Congress, warned there would be “serious implications” if the Wuhan virus made its way into the camps, adding that “the lives of millions of people will be at stake”. “We know for a fact that the conditions in the camps are horrible – many people have contracted serious sicknesses due to the overcrowded and filthy conditions,” he told Radio Free Asia. “China should do everything in its power to prevent the spread of the Wuhan virus into any camps because the consequences will be catastrophic, resulting possibly in the deaths of tens of thousands of Uyghurs arbitrarily detained.” There are over 400 camps spread across the region, according to research by the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement activist group. Past detainees say up to 45 people can be confined to a single room, with one plastic bucket for toilets, in rooms so small people have to take turns sleeping. Sayragul Sauytbay, who escaped from a camp in March 2018, told Haaretz: “The food was bad, there weren’t enough hours for sleep and the hygiene was atrocious. “There were almost 20 people in a room of 16 square metres … each room had a plastic bucket for a toilet. Every prisoner was given two minutes a day to use the toilet, and the bucket was emptied only once a day.”
Bratz lookalike, please. An Australian transgender woman who has spent $200,000 on cosmetic and plastic surgery staggered the celebrity doctors on a US TV show over her bizarre request. Jolene Dawson, 24, appeared on Botched, where she revealed she had undergone 15 surgeries as part of her transition, including six nose jobs, two boob augmentations, and her ears pinned back. But it was her other request that stunned the doctors. “I want two breast implants on the top of my head to give me that Bratz doll look, making my head look bigger at the top,” she said.

Meth’s OK, it’s halah, claims cleric An Islamic cleric in Indonesia arrested for selling methamphetamine to religious students has told authorities that he thought use of the drug was permitted by the Quran. Ahmad Marzuki, a teacher at an Islamic boarding school in East Java, told police that using meth was permissible and would aid in reading the holy text. Marzuki told authorities: “I know that methamphetamine is forbidden to be used by the state, but I did not find the argument in the Quran.” Police chief Rama Samtama Putra told local media that Marzuki said the powerful stimulant would aid students in becoming enthusiastic readers. “The suspect is of the view that this soul is not forbidden and increases the spirit of reading the Quran,” he said. Marzuki was arrested after a twomonth manhunt, during which time he continued to teach at religious schools across the country. He was eventually arrested at his home, where police found two people using meth alongside a small amount of the drug and drug paraphernalia. Despite the drug not being mentioned explicitly in the text, the head of Indonesia’s largest independent Islamic organisation said that common sense must be used and most Muslims do not dispute the drug’s legal status under Indonesian law, Vice reports. Marzuki faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a large fine.
Stars come to Queenstown Hollywood has come to Otago – again. This time it won’t double for Middle Earth, but for Montana in the US northwest. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are among the actors shooting Jane Campion’s latest film, The Power of the Dog, in the isolated Maniototo region, about 90 minutes drive northwest of Dunedin. It is believed the stars will be based in Queenstown. A large encampment to cater for the film crew is in place in Maniatoto, and a Ranfurly local said the town’s old hospital was being used.
Hilary strikes back Seven Sharp’s Hilary Barry is back at it, posting a perfect comeback to a viewer who made a remark on her “acting and dressing” her age. Last week, Barry shared a photo on Instagram, where a woman berated her over her personality and style choice. “Off the shoulder clothing is for YOUNG WOMEN not old women,” Jocelyn wrote. Now the presenter shared a photo of herself lounging on a couch, wearing a shoulderless blouse, pants and high heels. “Dressing my age and acting it,” she wrote. “PS: Loved all your comments the other day xx.”

Drain off any excess fat. ■■ Add oil to the frying pan and cook onion for 5 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add beef back to the frying pan. ■■ Add 1 1/2 cans of tomatoes with oregano and sugar and simmer the beef mixture for 20 minutes. ■■ To make the white sauce: Heat butter in a small pan. When it is foaming, stir in flour and cook mixture for 1 minute. Add milk
gradually, stirring all the time to avoid lumps forming, then cook the sauce for 2 minutes, still stirring it continuously. ■■ Remove pan from the heat and season the sauce to taste. Cover pan with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming on the sauce and set it aside. ■■ To assemble the cannelloni: Spread the remaining tomatoes over the base of a large baking dish. Spoon the beef mixture into the cannelloni tubes using a teaspoon and place the tubes on top of the sauce. Pour over white sauce and sprinkle over the parmesan. ■■ Cook the cannelloni in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the pasta is tender and the topping is golden. ■■ Serve with steamed broccoli. dvance Ashburton broke its own records last year, giving away $87,500 to 37 scholarship recipients. Those scholarships, however, would not have been possible without the generosity of what is now a growing number of people who have chosen to invest in or bequeath money to the foundation its executive officer Sandy Wood said. The philanthropic foundation was established in 2003 and is now New Zealand’s second oldest and one of the largest of its kind. It was the brain child of the late Neil Sinclair who wanted to provide way for people to gift or bequeath money that would generate income for future generations. The foundation is non profit and is governed by its own board. It offers a simple and effective way for local people to support the causes they are passion about. It has three main tasks - raising funds from donations and legacies, investing those funds to retain captial and generate income and providing grants ans scholarships to the local community from this income. Gifts of any size are appreciated and funds are invested, with the interest they earn given away each year as scholarships. Large donations can be tagged for a specific cause such as health or science, while smaller ones become part of the larger scholarship pool, Wood said. Donors intersts are matched with causes and this offers ways for those donors to make a greater impact through their charitable giving, she said. “It’s a simple model that enables everyone to easily become a philanthropist, a community change maker.” The money given would benefit the community over many lifetimes, she said. “Our donors are at the heart of what we do and it is a privilege to honour their wishes.”

Rakaia Rugby Club
E
stablished in 1876, the Rakaia Rugby Club is one of a number of strong country-based clubs within the Mid Canterbury region. Boasting strong numbers across a variety of different grades and age groups, the club has produced solid results over the years and are considered one of the powerhouse clubs in the district. With a strong JAB base which sees big
numbers of players taking to the fields in the recognisable blue jerseys each weekend and equally as strong senior and senior B programme, which provides strong pathways for players, the club is excelling on the paddock. But they also shine off the field. A strong focus on communication, keeping their community informed and bringing in new members each and every season is a real focus of the club.
Supplying each player with a jacket, playing jersey, shorts, socks, a mouthguard and a practice ball at the start of each season has proven a real strong point in attracting players to the club. With teams in all junior age groups for both girls and boys, Rakaia has become a permanent and much-valued part of the rugby community in the district and their results on the paddock prove a testament to the work put in behind the scenes.

n amalgamation of both the Hinds and Mayfield rugby clubs 26 years ago gave birth to the Southern Rugby Football Club and for the past 26 years, our southern-most club has been a prominent force in the Mid Canterbury rugby scene. The blue, red and white of Southern are a combination of the two former clubs. With a real focus on the family side of rugby, those colours have become a tradition for a number of players through the generations to wear with pride on the rugby paddock. Playing out of their home base at Hinds where they have state-of-the-art training facilities and changing sheds, and also using two fields at Mayfield, so that they continue to pay homage to the previous years, the club covers more territory than any other in the Mid Canterbury region.
A strong force across all grades, Southern consistently provides teams and players for all age groups from juniors right through to the two senior competitions. A strong record in both the Combined Country competition and in the Watters Cup from their senior side has instilled an immense amount of pride in the club, those who are a part of it and the players, families and friends grow from year to year as the club continues to prosper. ituated along the western border of the Mid Canterbury region and nestled underneath the base of the Southern Alps, the Mt Somers Rugby Club has been one of the most progressive clubs in the district over the past few years. Traditionally, since their inception in
1953, the club has fielded a senior B side each year, but, more recently, have introduced teams into the JAB grades as the population base grows and the desire for youngsters to be out playing rugby for their home club grows. With a strong network of hard-working committee members and officials, the club
achieves a lot each season and gets out into the community, undertaking various jobs to raise funds and the profile of the club. Situated at the iconic Mt Somers Domain, the club boasts one main playing field and excellent changing facilities with historic and proud clubrooms.

he Methven Rugby Club places its focus on three key goals; history, pride and passion. Three key goals to success, not only on the rugby paddock, but off it as well as the club works towards providing one of the most enjoyable and friendly atmospheres while showing strong levels of sportsmanship and selflessness in everything they do. One of Mid Canterbury’s longest-standing clubs – and set to celebrate their 125th year in 2021 – the club is a strong part of the backbone, like so many other clubs in the district, for the mantra of country rugby in New Zealand. Based underneath the majestic Mt Hutt in the small township of Methven, the club has been prominent in all grades of rugby for many years and with a growing base of players at JAB level, it’s a history that looks

Boasting good numbers across the board from senior and senior B right through the age groups to the JAB level and also a women’s side which joined the club last year, the Green Machine are a must-respect club in any age group, in any competition. An affiliation to Marist Rugby gives the club an extra edge over many clubs locally with the ability for further pathways to be created for players with the

hey might have started out as separate entities, but the combination of the Tech Old Boys Rugby Club and High School Old Boys Rugby Club in 1987 paved the way for one of the most historic rugby changes in Mid Canterbury. The two joined to become the Collegiate Rugby Football Club more than 30 years ago and since then have been a prominent and strong force on the Mid Canterbury rugby scene. With a proud record across those 30 years the immediate focus of the club in more recent times has been building and maintaining their JAB sides with a strong base of players across a number of different age groups. That’s seen the development of a number of players who look set to achieve higher honours in the
years to come. Their base near the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, is a hive of activity during the winter months, with huge numbers of young players taking part in Saturday rugby and then the club’s senior B side in action later in the day – entertaining a strong base of supporters who turn out each week to support their side and the club. Mid Canterbury will host its biggest waterski event for a number of years this weekend when the 3 Event Tournament rocks up to Lake Hood today and tomorrow. The significant event has drawn a number of competitors from across New Zealand and even Australia, with many arriving in the district earlier this week with a view to getting out on the Lake Hood water and seeing what it has to offer ahead of the two days of competition. With the Oz-Kiwi Championships loom-
ing next week, many of the Australian visitors are using the tournament this weekend as a hit-out before the major event with some of the best from the other side of the Tasman in various age groups taking part against some of the best from New Zealand. While the big guns might be coming out to play, there will be a lot of attention, given it’s home territory, on four young local members of Water Ski Lake Hood who will be out to hunt for good scores following a

■■MOUNTAINBIKING
Whatever it takes Reilly Duff has some big plans for his downhill mountain biking future. “I love riding bikes and if I could make money out of riding that would be all good,” the Mt Hutt College student said. In order to achieve this rather lofty goal the 16-year-old is starting with the basics. Mountain biking is a physically demanding sport, so fitness and strength are paramount. “I have joined the local gym so I can get fitter and stronger.” Duff pointed out that being strong not only means you can bike faster, it also goes a long way to getting you out of trouble if you go off your racing line. Next on his things-to-improve list is nutrition and mental wellbeing. “I am going to see a nutritionist, so she can help me with my diet and the kinds of food I should be eating.” Duff knows that like anything, downhill is just as much in your
head as on the track. “I want to improve my mental strength too. “Racing has a huge mental side to it.” According to Duff, worrying about crashing just about the worst thing he could do. “If I was to start a race thinking about crashing, I would go really slow and get last,” he said. The young philosopher also wants to discover how to not be so hard on himself. “I need to learn to accept the placing that I get, to move on not dwell on it and try harder next time.” Over the next 12 months Duff wants to purchase a Union Cyclist International licence. This licence would see him gain him access to national points races both here and Australia and allow him entry into the more competitive Under 19 class. After that the talented Methven teenager has his sights set on racing in Europe and America.

National champs a happy hunting ground By Heather Mackenzie

Methven’s Duff brothers Reilly and Patrick once again had a strong showing at the Oceania and National Down Hill Mountain Biking Championships held in Dunedin last weekend. Reilly finished fourth in the Oceania champs and fifth in the national champs. The 16-year-old rider, competing in the Oceania men’s open section, was looking on track for a place in the top three. However on his final run his shoulder clipped a tree and down he went. Not one to give up Reilly got up and carried racing, missing out on a podium spot by just over a second. Bike issues caused a bit of a headache for younger brother Patrick, but thanks to the kindness of a father of another rider, Patrick’s cracked rim was replaced and he was back to practising and racing. Fourteen-year-old Patrick lined up in the male U17s for the both the Nationals and the Oceanias, finishing seventh in both competitions, fourteen seconds behind the winner. Ex-Mount Hutt College rider Caitlin Titheridge followed her recent secondary school championships success by gaining podium places in both Oceanias and third in the Nationals. Racing in the U19 section she finished second and third respectively with a time of 3.48. Completing the local rider line-up was male elite competitor Gareth Burgess, who finished the weekend competition in fif- Sporting their Big Al’s riding gear at the Dunedin mountain biking championships are Caitlin Titheridge, Reilly Duff, Gareth teenth place. Stags juggernaut still rolling By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
Can anyone stop Technical in Canterbury Country Cricket action? The form book and the current standings indicate no. The unbeaten Stags are right as rain in their first appearance in the combined senior competition and an upset of the apple cart seems unlikely heading into today’s fixtures. They host Weedons who have struggled to stamp their authority this summer. Although they did well to defend 146 last weekend against Allenton, skittling them for 119 inside 16 overs. Technical were ominously un-
troubled against second-placed Peninsula, chasing down 144 whilst losing just two wickets in a canter. The previous two encounters between Weedons and Technical were one-sided affairs and do little to dispel expectations of a form-book reversal. In October, Weedons were humbled for 50 in October in response to Tech’s 282/7. It did not get much better a month later as the club was routed again for 57 as the Stags sailied home by seven wickets. But everyone loves an underdog and complacency within Tech’s orbit could play into Weedons’ hands at the Ashburton Domain.
A more competitive match-up could be in store further up the road as Greendale host Peninsula. Both teams were similarly put to the sword by the aforementioned competition leaders, however Greendale have had the extra week to muse on it. Back on home soil, Greendale will be wanting to even the score following their 47 run loss to Peninsula on November 30. Hamish Matheson was the star on the day for Peninsula as his century proved to be the difference between the two teams. Greendale’s bowlers will be aiming to keep the batsman in check when they meet again today.
However, their batsmen will be weary of the threats Peninsula posses with the ball – Kawai Singh and Ryan West top the wicket taking leaderboard with a combined 25 wickets recorded during this summer. Elsewhere, Allenton host Southbrook-Rangiora combined in the cross-over side of the draw. The home side have endured a topsy-turvy couple of months and will be disappointed they could not get the result against Weedons last weekend. Southbrook-Rangiora will fancy their chances after pushing Technical close prior to Christmas which followed a comfortable win over Weedons in November.
The Black Caps will take on India’s vaunted ODI batting line-up without any of the fast bowlers who shone at the Cricket World Cup. Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson made up New Zealand’s successful seam trio at the World Cup, but none of them will take the field in the Black Caps’ return to ODI cricket, with all three still recovering from injuries suffered in the test series walloping by Australia. Scott Kuggeleijn, Hamish Bennett and the uncapped Kyle Jamieson come in for the trio, while from the 15-man squad that reached the World Cup final, Colin Munro is the only other player to miss out, dropped after his poor form opening the batting during the tournament. Tim Southee, who only played one match at the World Cup, when Ferguson was injured, will now lead the line for the three upcoming ODIs against India. Jamieson is a strong chance to make his debut, while Kuggeleijn and Bennett will stay with the squad from the Twenty20 series, both linking up with the ODI team for the first time since playing Ireland in 2017. Munro’s absence means Henry Nicholls will continue to opening the batting with Martin Guptill, with Boxing Day test hero Tom Blundell set to resume his role as back-up batsman in the squad. Colin de Grandhomme, Jimmy Neesham and spinner Mitchell Santner are the all-rounders, while Ish Sodhi has been included for the first ODI at Seddon Park, before being released to play for New Zealand A in a first-class match against India A. While noting the inexperience of his bowling unit, Black Caps coach Gary Stead is expecting to name a settled batting lineup for the series, which starts on Wednesday at Seddon Park in Hamilton. “While the bowling line-up has a fresh look, the batting is very settled and we’ll likely have the same top eight batsmen from the World Cup finals,” Stead said. Black Caps ODI squad to play India: Kane Williamson (c), Hamish Bennett, Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tom Latham, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi (first ODI only), Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.
Stead refuses to throw Southee under the bus Black Caps coach Gary Stead has defended his decisions during his side’s dramatic Twenty20 Super Over defeat against India on Wednesday night. The Black Caps wasted a stunning innings from captain Kane Williamson at Seddon Park, being unable to score two runs from the final four balls of their chase of India’s 179-5, and eventually head-
ing to their third Super Over in six months. There, despite scoring 17 in their turn at bat, Tim Southee couldn’t restrict India, with Rohit Sharma blasting two sixes when needing 10 off two balls to send New Zealand to another demoralising defeat, one which clinched the series for India. Southee has now bowled in five
Super Overs for New Zealand, losing his last four and conceding 13, 19, 17 and 20 runs in those losses. However, Stead wasn’t about to second-guess the decision to back his senior bowler in the decider. “Tim sticks his hand up, he’s very much a team-first player, he missed on a couple [deliveries] and if one hit the guy in the boot we wouldn’t be having this con-
versation. That’s the fine margins of the T20 game. “It really comes down to what happens on the day and who is in our armoury. “If you look at the rest of our bowling group they’re relatively inexperienced at this level of T20, so Tim for us was the logical person to do it.” The other strategic move that
came under scrutiny in Hamilton was the elevation of Mitchell Santner to bat at number four. Santner mustered just nine off 11 balls, but Stead explained that the surprise move was planned for the left-hander to try and change India’s spin bowling strategies. “It didn’t come off, but in terms of the strategy, it was well talked about within the group.”

■■OPINION
Crusaders the team to beat By Joe Porter Super Rugby kicks off this week and while it’s the earliest the competition has ever started one thing remains the same – the Crusaders being favourites. So can anyone stop the champions claiming an unprecedented fourth straight title? The Crusaders completed the three-peat last season and coach Scott Robertson said they’re embracing the challenge of becoming the first team to win four on the trot. “We’re working towards it, it does bring external pressure but we’re used to that and we have the chance to do something special, we’re looking forward to it.” Also motivating Robertson is his snub for the All Blacks coaching job, with New Zealand Rugby preferring Ian Foster. “It did hurt, I’ll be honest. “I did a lot of reflecting on the reasons why I didn’t get the job. “Once I focused more on the future and what it means for me and how I can get better and looking at opportunities ahead I got excited about the Crusaders season and what we’re trying to do.”
The Crusaders have lost a host of senior players including Kieran Read and several other international stars, but they’re still littered with current and future All Blacks. “A lot of leadership and a lot of games of rugby and a lot of time in the jersey and experience is gone, but any dynasty or anyone that’s been successful ... they always have a succession plan and we’ve got a lot of guys that have come through our system that are desperate to be the next guy to play 100 games for the club.” Robertson and the Crusaders’ biggest challengers appear to be the Chiefs, with fullback Damian McKenzie returning from injury, though he didn’t play in Friday’s opener against the Blues with a groin injury, former All Black Aaron Cruden back at first-five and former Wales coach Warren Gatland at the helm. Cruden has high hopes for the team under Gatland. “His pedigree speaks for itself. “Just to see what he’s been able to do with the Welsh national team and the British and Irish Lions, it’s impressive. “He’s obviously a passionate Waikato man and Chiefs man, so
Warren Gatland will ehance the Chiefs’ chances considerably.
to have him back in the region is amazing and to have him back in the mix here will do wonders for our team.” The Chiefs are one of the strongest squads on paper and captain Sam Cane is confident they can beat all comers. “I don’t think there’s any reason why we can’t. “The squad has been together for a few years now and to have Aaron Cruden back in the mix with all his skill and experience. We’ve got a really well balanced
squad and combine that with our coaching team – I’m confident we can win the title this year.” Confidence will also be high at the Blues, who made the biggest off season signing – picking up All Black first-five Beauden Barrett from the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are entering the season with plenty of unknowns. Who takes over from Barrett at first-five? Jackson Garden-Bachop or Fletcher Smith? Spoiler – right now they’re not sure.
Who will cover for injured All Black loosie Ardie Savea? How will new coach Jason Holland, who took over after the 11th hour departure of John Plumtree to the All Blacks, go in his first head coach’s role? “It’s an exciting opportunity and we’ve still got a world class halfback and world class second five and throw Dane Coles, a world class hooker in the mix and we’ve still got a hell of a lot of experience in the side.” One thing I can’t see is the Highlanders having much of an impact. The undergunned squad has lost six All Blacks from last year including talisman Ben Smith. For me they finish last in the New Zealand conference, with the Crusaders battling it out with the Chiefs for first. I think either the Chiefs or Crusaders wins the whole thing. The Blues should finish third in the New Zealand conference and reach the playoffs for the first time in many seasons. The Hurricanes could scrape their way into the finals in a wildcard spot, but they lack depth and are just one or two injuries away from a horror season.

Federer still a champion By Howard Fendrich Give Roger Federer credit for always showing up and always staying until the end, no matter how sick or hurt he might be. No, he did not beat Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals. As it was, Federer was able to make a match of it for only about one set and about one hour before succumbing to the defending champion 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-3 at Melbourne Park. He was dealing with a painful groin muscle that cropped up during a five-setter in the previous round. It limited the movement of a guy who is 38 to begin with, kept him off the practice court and led him to take a medical timeout during his quarter-final and another after the first set against Djokovic. “Today was horrible, to go through what I did. “Nice entrance. Nice sendoff. And in between is one to forget, because you know you have a 3 per cent chance to win,” Federer said. “Got to go for it. You never know. “But once you can see it coming, that it’s not going to work anymore, it’s tough.” Still, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was out there until it was over. Federer, after all, never skips a Grand Slam match altogether and never leaves early, no matter what. He has played 1513 tour-level matches and not retired midway through one. Not once. He has played 421 matches at major tournaments since 1999 and not given his opponent a walkover. Not once. On only four occasions during his lengthy and accomplished career, at non-majors has Federer needed to withdraw from a match before it started.
One of those came when he was supposed to face Djokovic for the title at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London in 2014, but he begged off because of a bad back. “London was the worst, having to go apologise to people for not being able to walk properly,” Federer recalled. “So I’d rather have this, to be honest.” After securing a spot in his record eighth Australian Open final, and closing in on what would be a 17th major championship, Djokovic kept using the word “respect” while discussing Federer. That Federer showed up at all, because, as Djokovic explained: “Obviously, he was hurting. You could see it in his movement.” Djokovic’s own injury history includes quitting a match early as recently as the last Grand Slam tournament, the US Open in September, because of a left shoulder problem. He was booed off the court when he left in the third set. That completed a career Grand Slam of sorts for Djokovic, actually, with at least one mid-match retirement at each major: the French Open in 2005 (back) and 2006 (trouble breathing), Wimbledon in 2007 (foot blister) and 2017 (elbow), and the Australian Open in 2009 (heat illness). “I did have retirements throughout my career. I know how it feels when you’re hurt on the court. I know the amount of thoughts that go through your mind – whether or not you should continue or not, whether it’s going to get worse. Only the player knows at that moment,” Djokovic said. “But it’s, I think, an amazing fact that he has never retired (from a) match, not a single match, throughout his career. “Huge respect for that.” Federer said he would not have stepped out into Rod Laver Arena if he did not believe there was at least a tiny chance that he could compete – and win.

Showdown at the top An enthralling day of tennis awaits as Mid Canterbury’s A grade interclub competition heats up. Other clubs sitting mid-table will endeavor to harness some of the momentum gained in last weekend’s season resumption, however, it is at the top of the leaderboard where a showdown between Fairton and Methven should command box office takings. Fairton pair Connor Brosnahan and Diego Quispe-Kim have set the tone in doubles action so far and have proven to be a clinical partnership. Last weekend they sent Southern’s Sam and Oliver Bubb packing 6-2, 6-4, in Fairton’s only doubles success of the day. Today they will face off against Tyler Leonard and Cameron McCracken, who are coming off a straight sets win over Hampstead’s Peter Kirwan and Peter Leonard. McCracken and Quispe-Kim will then face off in a blockbuster singles showdown. Quispe-Kim will be charged for this encounter after McCracken handed Fairton’s top seed his only club defeat in November. McCracken made light work of Peter Leonard 6-2, 6-0 in his Round 3 singles matchup and
with both players exhibiting such distinguished form, a humdinger could be on the cards. Elsewhere, Allenton take on Southern in their interclub hitouts. Southern brothers Sam and Ollie Bubb will be hoping youth beats out experience when they take on Allenton’s Jason Feutz and Lee Gilbert. Both pairings are coming off defeats in Round 3. However, Feutz and Gilbert have the most ground to make up on the standings as their club sits at the foot of the ladder. In the singles match, Feutz will face Sam Bubb in a match which could provide some long rallies and immense serving. Meanwhile, players from Dorie and Hampstead also face off today. Hampstead’s Bryn Looij comes in for Peter Kirwan who has an elbow issue for the club’s doubles fixture, alongside Peter Leonard. They will take on family team Rhys and Jayden Cromie, who defeated Allenton’s Feutz and Gilbert 6-3, 6-4 last week. Top seeds Rhys Cromie and Leonard will be putting all pleasantries aside when the off-thecourt chums scrap it out in their Cameron McCracken has a massive fight on his hands on-court today. singles battle.

■■GERALDINE
Time running out Carl Markham will be hoping he can pull off a popular local victory when he steps out onto the Orari Racecourse today with Missie Castleton at the Geraldine Trotting Club meeting. The Methven horseman, who trains a small team of horses on the outskirts of Methven, has been given the role of caretaker trainer of the nine-year-old mare and she’s been domiciled at his stables for the past three weeks. Officially trained by Terry May, Missie Castleton was transferred to Markham following the medical incident at Omakau involving champion horseman, Ricky May. “We’re just looking after her really,” Markham said. “She’s actually been served by What The Hill so she’s only got limited time left on the track before she heads off to be a broodmare, so it would be nice to get another win with her.” Missie Castleton is raced by Geraldine harness racing identity, Lachie Marshall. A former commentator, Marshall has been the heart and soul of the small Geraldine club for a number of years – so a victory on what is really home turf would be quite the moment. But the statistics don’t make for great reading. In seven goes on the Orari track, Missie Castleton is yet to finish in the top three, but Markham’s not too worried about the historic side of things. “Traditionally she has been better on the all-weather tracks as opposed to the grass, but she does get into the race quite well and I thought if she brought her best form, she’d be a bit of a chance. “Her work this week has been really good, I’m quite happy with her.

“She worked probably the best she has since she’s been with us on Thursday, so we’re hopeful of a good run provided she can make a good beginning.” Markham will also put his own trotter, DD’s Super Stuart, on the float, but he’s given up on knowing what to expect with the talented, but enigmatic trotter. After a strong run of form on the annual West Coast circuit over Christmas, there were high hopes the gelding would return to this side of the main divide and be over a few issues which had plagued his career up until that point. But a disappointing effort after a slow beginning last week at Motukarara left Markham scratching his head. “I’m not quite sure what to make of him to be honest, he went to the Methven workouts the week before Motukarara and went really good, beating an open class horse, but then he just didn’t seem interested last week. “He’s got the ability to win a race like the one he’s in, there’s no doubt about that, but we’ve just got to get over the wee things that he does sometimes early if he’s going to be a player.” Markham’s son, Jeremy, will handle the driving duties of the son of Methven stallion, Superfast Stuart in what is a very wideopen looking trotting race during the middle of the day. As well as the two training engagements, Markham will also do the steering duties on maiden pacer Web’s Reactor for fellow Mid Canterbury trainer, William Lake. Desperately unlucky last time out at Reefton, the diminutive pacer may improve with today’s run, but the usual good manners give him more than just a runners’ chance.

ROSS, Paul – Kathryn Scully and the family of the late Paul Ross wish to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness shown to us following our loss. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbours and well wishers who visited our home and attended the funeral and who provided emotional and practical support to us at that difficult time. For those who telephoned, sent cards of condolences as well as those who donated to St John, we are truly grateful. A special word of thanks goes out to Staff and Management of the Rosebank Hospital and Rest home for their kindness and respect shown at all times. We would also like to thank the Mayfield Lions Club and St John for their help and support. To those that helped in anyway, your contribution made our loss more bearable. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Boredom will cue you do something different. Take the hint or boredom will develop into something quite different, for instance: irritation, anger, frustration and resentment. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Because you are genuinely enthusiastic about seeing others succeed, you’ll support those around you and make them feel loved. This excellent karma will soon swing back to embrace you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Life works like an Amazon wish list. If you want something, and make it specific, public and convenient for others to give it to you, then you are very much more likely to receive it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The void of longing is a tough one to fill, as it only wants the thing it longs for. Try shoving some creativity into it. That is at least mouldable. It gives you something to work with. It’s involving; it will do in a pinch. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Fear can be as specific, innate and uncontrollable as eye colour. Don’t berate yourself for feeling afraid, even if others are not afraid of the same thing. Your wariness may be owed to having greater intelligence. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): People can be patient when they know that, at the end of the line, there’s going to be the thing they want. It’s the uncertainty about that end result that causes anxiety. How can you make them more confident? LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): “When everybody is somebody then nobody is anybody,” said the operetta writer W.S. Gilbert – right on all accounts. Everybody is somebody, and if there is any significance to be had, it is by the lot of us. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): This one is coming straight from the muses. To be truly brilliant, you can’t be thinking too much about what you’re doing. That interferes with the tunnel. Just let it come through you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Wherever the stuff was, there’s usually more there. Go back to the source; repeat what’s worked. Save the thing that didn’t, but you still have a feeling about it. You’re usually ahead of your time, after all. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): In equations of travel, weight is a significant factor. If you want to go high or fast or gracefully, you’ll have to lighten your load. Whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The brain is a master predictor. This is why it’s so annoying to hear half a conversation. It involuntarily busies other people’s brains to solve a puzzle that will never be solved. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You learn by being involved with people. It’s something that can’t be duplicated. You dream of a hassle-free existence but the hassle is often, the whole point.
