Graham Matthews (inset right) is chuffed with how well his lambs are coming along at Wakanui.
An early spring in their step By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Spring is two months away, but lambing is done and dusted at Graham Matthews’ Wakanui grazing block. “It’s been a tough year, but the sheep came through real good,” the 84-year-old retired farmer said. The season had been a challenging one with little autumn rain and low pasture growth, and

he was not sure why his sheep had done so well this year. He had 56 ewes which lambed over three weeks on the Wakanui block, which he was grazing on for the first time this year. The sheep had finished lambing by June 20, resulting in 37 live sets of twins and 94 live lambs altogether. “I helped one sheep, the rest lambed themselves.” And they had thrived since, en-
joying a daily dose of extra feed such as lucerne hay, baleage and sheep nuts. Matthews once farmed at Waimate and had 5000 sheep on 2300 acres of hill country. He found retiring was no reason to give up something he loved, and he lambs his sheep on grazing blocks around his home in the town of Ashburton each year. “I have always liked animals,” he said.
After a foray into winter lambing he found it was a method that worked well, so he stuck with it. Last year had been particularly successful, when his top pen of lambs at Coalgate, at the end of October, fetched $229 per lamb. “I have waited nearly 100 years to get $200,” he said. And he was confident, with such a thriving mob again, that he would get a similar price this year. Matthews has a long history of
sheep farming behind him, having acquired his first flock at the age of 14. “Dad let me have a paddock and I bought 100 ewes of my own,” he said. The main thing he had learned was that it was most important for newborns to get their first drink of colostrum. Matthews worked as a shearer in his younger years, saving enough to buy his own property.

Wheelie bin service set to grow By Sue Newman

Full steam ahead on MSA rebuild Covid-19 might have kept work crews off the Ashburton Club and MSA site for several weeks, but they’re now back in business, working to make up lost time on a project that will see the club with a new restaurant and suite of meeting rooms. Club secretary manager Stuart
Geddes said teams were working ‘all guns blazing’ and while time had been lost, there was a real willingness to complete the project as close to the original deadline as possible. An opening pre-Christmas might now be aspirational rather than achievable, he said.
“But I absolutely applaud the contractor and his teams on the project. They’ve been amazing and they’re taking every opportunity to make up lost time. “We’re all taking one step forward and cautiously doing that to make sure we stay within the Level 1 guidelines.”
The MSA work was part of a lineup of work under way in the CBD and looking ahead, taken with the council’s town centre revitalisation work, the future for the area looked pretty good, Geddes said. “It’s all pretty positive looking ahead and we should be taking every opportunity to celebrate.”
Ashburton’s wheelie bin collection might be about to spread its wings and head into new residential territory. As part of the council’s review of its revenue and financing policy it plans to bring 162 extra properties onto the service list, in some cases pushing the service well out into rural areas. Currently there are 11,352 residential properties receiving the service in Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven. The plan is to push those boundaries out to include a Willowby block, Laing’s Road, Melrose Road and Lake Hood’s Village green as well as Acton Road in Rakaia, Wilkinson’s Road in Chertsey and Sam Holmes Drive in Methven. Of the new joiners to the service, 120 are in the Willowby Block and while they will all receive a wheelie bin service, some property owners will find they need to place their bin on the opposite side of the road for collection. This block is bounded by Wilkins, Boundary and Winslow-Willowby Roads. Six properties on State Highway One, between Tinwald and Winslow, are not included. The cost to the properties joining the scheme from July 2021 is estimated to be around $230 per household. All households receiving the service pay the same amount and there is no option to opt out.

Citizens Advice Bureau a step closer By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
A huge store of experience as a volunteer gave Sarah Clifford the perfect CV when she made a bid to win the co-ordinator’s role for Ashburton’s new Citizens Advice Bureau. The bureau will be based at Community House and will become the go-to place for people seeking information across a huge range of topics, from croquet club contacts through to information on who can help with housing queries. And it’s a job that has Clifford buzzing. Volunteering has been part of her life for years and using that experience to become part of the new bureau was a great opportunity, she said. She’s not underestimating the work involved. And that work starts on Friday, when she heads to Christchurch for day one in a long run of training for the role. But with Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) a well established network around New Zealand, it’s a tried and tested model, Clifford said. Earlier this year the Ashburton District Council agreed to fund the service’s establishment. Between signing that deal off and the service hitting the ground, Clifford said she has plenty of work to do. Before the service can open its doors in Ashburton, she needs to recruit and train a large team of volunteers. “The volunteers don’t need to know it all as their job will be helping people find the information they need, online or face-to-face. Their job will be knowing how to find that information.” Her volunteers need two key qualities – empathy and passion for helping others. They also
Sarah Clifford, newly appointed co-ordinator of Ashburton’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau. need to undergo a police check. “And we want people of all nationalities,” she said. One of the biggest jobs involved in setting up the CAB will be transferring across the huge stock of information on clubs and organisations around the district that is already in Community House’s data base. “We’ll not only have to transfer this, we’ll have to check, update it and expand on it,” Clifford said.
No firm start date has been set for Ashburton’s CAB to open, that depends on how quickly a pool of volunteers can be recruited and trained, but it will be in business later this year. “I’m really excited to be part of setting up this new service because it will mean that people in our community will be empowered with information and options to address issues in their lives,” she said. While it would be a one-stop

shop for information about organisations around the district, Clifford said CAB would not be be competing with or doubling-up on work done by other organisations. “We’re the first step stop, We will link people with the people who can help them.” Sarah is no newcomer to working as a volunteer or to recruiting volunteers. She founded New Zealand’s CanInspire Trust, founded in 2010 after she

underwent treatment for melanoma. She was diagnosed in 2008 at the age of 26. There are now seven branches of the trust around New Zealand. Community House manager John Driscoll said that having the CAB working from the building would add another spoke to in the community hub’s wheel. “We’re thrilled to have someone of Sarah’s experience and skills to set up this much needed new service,” he said.

■■ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT
In brief
Company fined after worker paralysed An isolvent company will have to pay more than $300,000 in reparation and fines following an incident in 2018 that left a young Argentine worker paralysed from the waist down. Sidogg Investments Ltd appeared before Judge Dominic Dravitzki in the Ashburton District Court on Monday for sentencing on one charge of breaching three sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Simon van der Heyden is the sole director of the company, which was incorporated on April 13 2006, but the company is no longer trading. The charges were brought against the dairy milking company by WorkSafe following an incident on September 22, 2018, where Facundo Fermin Wingerter, a 19-year-old farm worker from Argentina, was seriously injured after being run-over by a calf trailer on a farm the company was contract milking on in Hororata. The summary of facts read to the court said that Wingerter had been out collecting calves after the morning milking with another worker, with Wingerter riding a motorcycle and the other worker driving the farm SUV that was towing the calf trailer which had an estimated empty weight of around 400kg. After collecting around 10 calves, Wingerter elected to ride on the drawbar of the trailer instead of on the motorbike as they went to collect the final calf left in the paddock. As the SUV and trailer were moving across the paddock at an estimated speed of around 20km/h, Wingerter lost his footing and slipped from where he was standing under the trailer. He felt his body roll, and the trailer ran him over, resulting in crushing injuries to his lower body. An ambulance arrived approximately 40 minutes later, and Wingerter was eventually airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter with fractures and dislocation to a number of vertebrae, and fractures to his pelvis, left scapular and left first and second ribs. He was moved to the Burwood Spinal Unit on September 25, and after a period of intensive rehabilitation was fit enough to be discharged in order to travel back to Argentina on December 19. As a result of the injuries he was paralysed from the waist down, and has lost bladder and bowel function, and has been told he will likely never walk again and will need to live the rest of his life in a wheelchair. The WorkSafe investigation found that the defendant had

Dog rego’s due Today is the start of a new dog ownership year and that means thousands of dogs around the Ashburton District are begging to be made legal. Dog owners need to begin re-registering their pets and working dogs from today. Current owners were sent re-registration forms in mid June and they have until the end of this month to ensure their dog is a legal resident of the district for the next year. All dogs, aged three months and over, must be registered and fees go towards funding animal control services in the district including operating the dog pound, providing dog safety education programmes and responding to animal complaints. The registration process can be completed online or at the council’s Baring Square office. Owners who do not meet the July 31 deadline risk being charged late fees and, if a dog remains unregistered after September 1, an infringement notice is issued. Failure to register your dog by September 11 could mean the council removes your dog from your property.
Covid-19 some health and safety systems in place, but that they were not enforced, and that weekly shed meetings were held, but often messages did not make their way to all staff members. A number of staff said they had been told not to sit on the drawbar of the trailer, and that staff had been told not to stand on the drawbar, however, that was not always enforced and it appeared that it was considered normal by the farm workers. Following legal arguments from both the prosecution and defence referencing a number of prior prosecutions, with the prosecution arguing a starting point for the fine should be $600,000, while the defence argued a starting point of $480,000 was reasonable. They agreed that reparation of $90,000 for emotional harm and consequential loss was appropriate. Judge Dravitzki said it was clear from Wingerter’s victim impact statement that the incident was going to have lifelong impacts for an active young man who, surprisingly ,had no ill-will against his former employers and who hoped that an incident like this would not happen to anyone else.
He opted for a starting point of $500,000, giving a total credit of 25 per cent for a number of mitigating factors including reparation, genuine remorse and remedial steps taken following the incident. Once those discounts had been taken into account, Dravitzki added a further 25 per cent discount for the guilty plea, resulting in a final fine of $281,250. He ordered a $90,000 reparation payment be made to Wingerter for both emotional harm and the small amount of consequential loss suffered, and awarded costs to the prosecution of just over $1000. Sidogg Investment’s lawyer Olivia Lund argued that due to the company being in liquidation, they were not in a position to pay the fine as they had no assets with which to pay the fine. However, Judge Dravitzki said the liquidators report provided to the court did not rule out a fine being unable to be paid, and that the business was clearly a profitable one. He said there was no reason to believe the company had been liquidated as a result of the incident, as there was
sworn evidence from van der Heyden indicating the decision had been made to wind down the business to take up other business opportunities in the months earlier in 2018. “I find that a fine should be imposed and, if it was not to, it would send a worrying message,” he said. Following the sentencing, WorkSafe’s Chief Inspector Steve Kelly said it was important that those employing migrant workers, who do not have English as a first language, needed to ensure there are extra precautions so health and safety requirements are met. “At any farm where workers are employed, for whom English might be a second language, employers need to take extra precautions to ensure health and safety responsibilities are being met and understood by workers,” he said. “As an employer it your responsibility to make sure you find ways to clearly communicate risks. “Employers should not allow any work to be carried out until they are completely satisfied workers understand safe practices.”
There are no new cases of Covid-19 in the country reported yesterday, the Ministry of Health said. In a statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed there were no new cases of the coronavirus, so total confirmed cases remained at 1178, with confirmed and probable cases combined totalling 1528. The last time there were no new cases was on 19 June.
Market manipulated The Electricity Authority has found that generator Meridian Energy manipulated the power market, costing consumers about $80 million. A complaint from a group of small power retailers has been upheld by the Authority against Meridian, for spilling excess water from its South Island hydro dams which caused a spike in wholesale prices as more expensive gas was used to provide energy.
Business confidence The June Business Outlook from the ANZ Bank showed unease has eased slightly, with a net 34 per cent of respondents pessimistic about the broad economic outlook for the next 12 months, down from nearly 42 per cent at the end of May. A more closely followed measure of firms’ views of their own future showed a net 26 per cent expect conditions to get worse.

■■ RANGITATA ELECTORATE
Social Credit announce candidate By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A fifth political party has announced they will be standing a candidate in the Rangitata electorate in this year’s general election. Social Credit has selected Ashburton father of two, Brannon Favel, as its candidate for the Rangitata electorate. A press release sent out by the party said Favel has a diploma from Utrecht University and works in the dairy industry as a hoof care specialist. It said his work brings him into daily contact with farmers and he understands the issues facing the farming community. “Brannon is passionate about keeping foreign influence out of New Zealand politics and foreign ownership out of New Zealand businesses, particularly agriculture,” the release said. “He is keen to see our network of national parks expanded for flora and fauna conservation.” Favel said it is now widely acknowledged that the economic ideas of the Social Credit Party are more mainstream as a result of the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Previous taboos on economic management have been swept away, with the use of the Reserve Bank to support the economy now accepted,” he said. “It is creating $60 billion for its quantitative easing programme – something that most people thought was not possible.” “That puts Social Credit’s, just released, $20 billion economic policy programme for this year’s general election into the feasible category.” “A new economic direction is required to support thousands of unemployed, rebuild business, lift people on low incomes out of poverty, address inadequate housing, develop secondary industry and more self-sufficiency, move primary producers towards regenerative farming, and protect and enhance the environment.” The party will be hoping that Favel can increase their visibility for the party vote, with the Democrats for Social Credit having just three supporters in the district, with one vote each cast at Wakanui, Tinwald Hall and the Sinclair Centre in the 2017 general election. Feeney’s Lounge was once again rocking to the sound of live music on Sunday, thanks to the Nor’westers Muso’s Club. Club president John Tull said everybody was really pleased to be back listening to live music and socialising again. “We had a good variety of musicians come walking through the door, instruments in hand,” he said. A teenage band from Temuka, calling themselves The Bigfoots, opened proceedings with their enthusiastic punk-like
original sound. “They were great to watch and full of energy. The drummer was often standing up playing and dancing around the place and their guitarist even played while lying on his back,” Tull said. Nor’wester’s Muso’s Club has always prided itself on giving all-comers a chance to get up and perform in front of a live audience. “Everybody is welcome here,” said Tull. “In the past we have had bagpipe players, a ninety-year-old playing his squeeze box and even a couple of humourist poets have taken to the stage.”

The one party that was represented in the last election that will not be represented this time around is the ACT party, who have previously been represented by Tom Corbett. Tom has announced he will not be standing again and the party was unable to find a replacement candidate. When asked when the party was last represented in the district, party leader Chris Leitch said Social Credit changed its name to Democrats in 1985 and then became a founding member of the Alliance in 1991. “When that split up in 2002 and Jim Anderton formed the Progressive party most of the Democrats went with him,” he said. “Lynley Simmons was the Democrats candidate for the Alliance in 1999 and for the Progressives in 2002, having previously been the Social Credit candidate in the old Timaru seat in 1981, 1984, the by-election in 1985, and 1987. Our CBD starting to take some real shape
R
ight now, it’s a bit of a mess – cranes, road cones, signs and general disruption are ruling the Ashburton CBD – but with the advantage of time, it won’t be long until the heart of the town is buzzing with a fresh new look. To the naked eye, progress of big-ticket jobs like the CBD revitalisation project might be moving at a snail’s pace, but there’s actually plenty being done, and achieved, each and every week, and we constantly get nearer to completion. And what it appears we are going to be left with is a newlook, fresh-faced central Ashburton, where it doesn’t feel old and dilapidated every time you walk down the street. What a victory that will be. Across the road from us, here at Somerset House, the Murney Main building stands proudly, basking in all of its coppery glory. When the final stages of that build are complete and the street side is completely opened again it’s going to bring new life to East Street which is well overdue. Around the corner, the Eastfield Health building is also nearing completion and it’s arrival onto the scene, especially next to the impressive Work and Income building, will create some vibrancy which disappeared when the site became a rough-looking parking lot. Just down the road a bit the new Darryl Phillips building, beside the old Post Office, is yet another example of the confidence business people are showing. These are all really positive enhancements for Ashburton. An overhaul and a spruceup for the beating heart of the township has been a long time in coming for sure, but with all the work that is currently going on we seem to be finally heading in the right direction, which is fantastic. There’s a long way to go, there’s no doubt about that – but as the months tick by, and let’s be fair here, they are low-flying past us – we get closer and closer to getting a central business district that we can be proud of and show off to the rest of the world.

A big player, who deserved better By Mike Hosking
out at the end of the day. It’s why people like Sir Geoffrey Palmer, David Cunliffe and Sir Bill English get to be leaders. It’s not because they stand out or are obvious choices – they are compromises, last people standing, the only ones we can all agree on in difficult times. But Bennett is of genuine value and use to her party, and she’s now lost to them. She won’t miss them as much as they’ll miss her. She will go on to do decent stuff and recover her normality. But it’s a shabby sad way to wrap 15 years, and like many before her, she deserves a better conclusion.
P
aula Bennett is all that’s wrong with politics. Mind you, I said the same thing about Dame Jenny Shipley at the time. Politics as a profession, as a means of making large decisions, and running countries leaves a tremendous amount to be desired. It’s not like most jobs where recruiting is high quality, expectations are high quality, those who work hard and are driven and talented generally end up doing what they want with a decent number of people benefiting because of it. Up until she got rolled, Bennett was potentially the Deputy Prime Minister, a senior Cabinet minister, and the chair of the upcoming election campaign for the National Party. After she got rolled, she is on her way out, over it, clearly aggrieved – and looking for a new life and a new start. Nothing wrong with that, if the latter part of that is arrived at by yourself. You make your contribution, you have set goals, and you move on to new and fresh fields. But that wasn’t the plan. And it is so rarely the plan in politics because politics is hopelessly broken, and it mostly ends badly. Dame Jenny Shipley, I distinctly remember, was the Prime Minister who lost the 1999 election. Not really because she wasn’t up to much, but because the coalition which involved a bloke called Winston Peters had fallen apart, taken Jim Bolger with it and generally left the public with a desire for change. One of the outworkings of that was Shipley was rolled and sent to the backbenches.
LETTERS Paula Bennett’s political days are over. Shortly after, she quit and moved back to the real world. But the skills, experience and acumen that got her to the top didn’t vanish with the election defeat, the same way what Bennett offered didn’t vanish because Todd Muller came along. You don’t go from being a leader to useless on a vote. But sadly, that appears to be the way politics is played, and as a result you lose valuable talent. The game relies on too many variables. It’s not enough to be good, you have to be hellishly lucky as well. It has to be the right time, there have to be any number of compromises, trade-offs, deals done, and you throw all of that in the great big pot of aspiration, and see what pops

The purpose of the portfolio advisor is to work with industry and communities to identify suitable Provincial Growth Fund projects which will ideally play to the region’s biggest opportunities for growth. The advisor will be working with and connecting to a variety of industry groups to ensure all opportunities are explored, with a focus on future economic development. Mr Reveley incorrectly alludes to this role being funded by ratepayers, when in fact the position is being 100 per cent funded by the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund.

Pop music ‘Hunger Games’ Taylor Swift has likened pop music to The Hunger Games. The Look What You Made Me Do hitmaker has branded herself as a “gladiator” and admits it can be “intense” over-analysing everything she does. She said: “Pop music can feel like The Hunger Games, and we’re gladiators. Overanalysing everything makes it feel really intense.” And the 30-year-old singer has been enjoying the time off she has had in lockdown with her boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Testing for Covid-19 is in full swing in Melbourne.
■■AUSTRALIA
Melbourne ‘will get worse’ Virus hotspot suburbs should be “ringfenced” to stop people entering and leaving to slow a resurgence of the new coronavirus in Melbourne, an epidemiologist says. UNSW epidemiology professor Mary-Louise McLaws, who is advising the World Health Organisation on its Covid-19 response, said the Victorian Government must act “very rapidly” to give such local lockdowns a chance of success. Premier Daniel Andrews is considering reintroducing restrictions, including stayat-home orders, in local hotspots as the state deals with a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. The cases are mostly concentrated in 10 suburbs in the city’s north, west and south-east. Prof McLaws said it was possible for Australia to replicate China’s success at containing the virus by locking down hotspot areas while easing restrictions elsewhere. That strategy – which would involve ordering people not to leave designated zones without special exemptions – also proved effective during the 2003 SARS outbreak in China, she said. Earlier this month, lockdown measures were reimposed in parts of Beijing after an outbreak linked to a seafood supermarket. Lockdowns of specific provinces and residential compounds have also been used in other parts of the country. “They [China] put in place the ring-fencing of cities, but have then instigated ring-fencing in hotspots within cities, and the success of that emboldens my idea
that this could be the way to go,” Professor McLaws said. But she said the effectiveness of any local lockdowns in Melbourne would not be obvious for about 14 days because of the virus’ incubation period. “So now is the time to act, and to act very rapidly.” The strategy would need to be combined with a testing blitz – which is currently underway in hotspot suburbs – and could be even more effective if people wore face masks when physical distancing wasn’t possible, Prof McLaws said. “With the new masks now, it can afford up to 70 per cent protection [against infecting others], and it’s very cheap,” she said. Suburban lockdowns would include stay-at-home rules. The State Government has not spelled out how localised lockdowns or restrictions would work, or whether they would apply to individual suburbs, postcode zones or entire council areas. Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said the government was considering all options as it expected the outbreak to get “worse before it gets better”. But it was a “balancing act” to manage community fatigue and not to “drive people out of suburban areas into new unaffected areas,” Prof Sutton said. He said localised restrictions, if implemented, would include stay-at-home orders. “It would be part of the new rule, to stay at home, that people would stay in
their place of residence,” he said. “But it would be a significant logistical exercise to manage a stay-at-home [order] that is just about particular postcodes, particular suburbs or local government areas, so we have to think about all of those challenges.” Darebin, along with eight other inner Melbourne councils, has also written to the state and federal governments requesting a ramped-up education campaign for multicultural communities. “Our non-English speaking background communities are struggling with the challenges of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and limited up-to-date information in their respective languages,” a letter from the nine mayors said. “We don’t believe the message is getting out there.” Stonnington Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos, one of the letter’s signatories, said targeted education would be more effective than localised lockdowns. “Our local communities do not support lockdown in local community areas – it will not work,” he said. “There are no hard boundaries between municipalities – people don’t see municipal boundaries. “But really it’s about education … we need to ensure that all our community are getting the most up-to-date information in their own language so they can understand what is happening on a day-to-day basis.” While Stonnington is not among the six municipalities to be declared coronavirus hotspots, there have been infections recorded in the area in recent weeks.

Trump tweets video of couple waving guns President Donald Trump, again accentuating racial tensions in America, has posted a video showing a Missouri couple brandishing guns towards protesters who were calling for police reforms. Without comment, Trump retweeted an ABC News video showing a white couple responding to Black and white protesters
marching past their St. Louis mansion. In the video and others on social media, some protesters can be seen pausing to film or photograph the couple, while others can be heard to shout, “Keep moving!” and “Let’s go!” Mark McCloskey, 63, who lives in the mansion with his wife, Patricia McClos-

Both are personal-injury lawyers. “I was terrified that we’d be murdered within seconds, our house would be burned down, our pets would be killed. We were all alone facing an angry mob.”
Chris Lilley hits back Chris Lilley has posted a telling link on Facebook amid fierce backlash surrounding his controversial Tongan schoolboy character. In a defiant move, the comedian and writer shared a deleted scene from the Summer Heights High spin-off Jonah From Tonga which shows his character sitting with a group of students writing the song Don’t Be a Bully from the series. It comes after former Tongan schoolboy Filipe Mahe, who was the subject of a 2004 ABC documentary series, claimed Lilley based the character Jonah on him. Mahe said the portrayal made him feel “angry and exploited”.
The big circus goes broke Cirque du Soleil has filed for bankruptcy. The Montreal-based live entertainment company – which has become an icon in production shows in Las Vegas – has filed for protection from creditors under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act. If the Superior Court of Quebec grants the order when the case goes to court, the company will seek immediate provisional recognition in the United States in the US Bankruptcy Court. The CCCA order gives the company the ability to restructure and reopen in the future, after the organisation’s income was slashed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Preparing to duel for the Duff Trophy at the weekend are finalists (from left) Richard Maw, Frikkie Greybe, Simon Wareing and James Anderson. PHOTO DAN MCLAUGHLAN

Duff stays local Simon Wareing and James Anderson have gone back-to-back to retain the Duff Trophy. The local pair dominated Saturday’s final against Richard Maw and Frikkie Greybe at the Methven Golf Club, racing out to a five-shot lead on the front nine. Greybe then responded with three consecutive birdies to cut back the deficit. However the result was sealed when Wareing chipped in on 16 to make it back-to-back Duff titles. Wareing and Anderson had to go to the 20th hole in the semi-finals a week earlier to overcome a
gallant Paddy Helmore and Bruce Dickson. After a seesawing first nine holes, Helmore and Dickson held a two shot advantage. The ensuing five holes were split until the 15th, when Anderson landed his third shot just a few centimetres from the pin to win the hole. His team-mate then clinched the 17th with a 2 to square the match. The clash was eventually decided on the 20th when Anderson secured the win with another superb chip. Maw and Greybe produced good
form to overcome a plucky Geoff Rhodes at the 15th in the other playoff. Michael Kemp and Ben Rutter also secured the Middleton Trophy at the weekend following a tight tussle with Ross Breach and Phil Elliott. After a tit-for-tat front nine, Kemp and Rutter proceeded to control of the match by winning three holes which put the pair four up after 13. Elliott then landed a monster 50-foot putt on the 15th green to remain in the hunt but it was not to be as handshakes brought an end to proceedings at the 17th hole.

Kearney linked to Broncos Axed New Zealand Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has been linked to a return to the Brisbane Broncos in an assistant coaching role less than two weeks after losing his job. Kearney was shockingly sacked by the Warriors a day after the side’s round six defeat to the Rabbitohs on June 19. He has been replaced by Todd Payten as interim head coach as the Warriors begin the search for a new coach. According to the Daily Telegraph, the Broncos board is keen to bring in some coaching support for coach Anthony Seibold after the side suffered a five straight defeat over the weekend. The newspaper reports the Broncos board wants either Kearney or Broncos great Kevin Walters to be added to the coaching team.
Kearney was previously an assistant coach in Brisbane in 2013 and 2014 before becoming head coach at the Warriors. “I know Stephen is back in town [Brisbane],” Seibold told the Telegraph. “He has worked for the club previously and he’s got a lot of experience. He did a tremendous job when he was here last time. “He’s a person I’d reach out for if there is a position available.” The Broncos and Warriors clash on Saturday night as both two-win teams look to turn around poor form. 15th placed Brisbane haven’t won a game since the NRL season re-started following the Covid-19 break with their most recent defeat a 30-12 thrashing at the hands of the Gold Coast Titans where the side was booed off the field at halftime.

U-15s WINNING STREAK EXTENDED Good teams find a way to win even when they are not at their best. Mid Canterbury United’s under-15 side may not have produced their best performance of the season however managed to scrap their way to a 2-1 away win over Christchurch Boy’s High School at the weekend to keep their impressive unbeaten run ticking. The visitors secured a 1-0 lead in the first half and went close to extending their advantage as numerous chances went begging. Instead, United conceded an own goal, which tied things up. United were not to be denied however, as a second half goal sealed the win to keep their 100 per cent record intact. After four games, United top the 15th grade division 2 ladder, with this weekend’s home game against Nomads United 15’s their next assignment. PHOTO DOUG BOVETT
■■FOOTBALL
Sarpreet Singh ‘still learning’ All White midfielder Sarpreet Singh has won his first Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, but the 21-year-old footballer says he still has plenty to learn from his successful team-mates. Bayern Munich has now won the German football title for eight consecutive seasons, and Singh is surrounded by experience. The former Wellington Phoenix player joined the champion club last year, and then made his Bundesliga debut in December. He became the first New Zealander since Wynton Rufer in the 1990s to play in the competition. Growing up in Auckland, Singh said he aspired to play in Europe at the highest level. “I am very fortunate and very blessed to be in this position and being given this opportunity where I am in an environment with the top team and I am always learning, I’m always growing. “It’s an amazing feeling just being a part of the team and winning the title,” Singh said. “I hope this is the first of many but I know at the same time there is a lot more hard work to do in order to reach that.” Singh played twice for Bayern’s top team this season and predominantly played for
the reserve side in the German third division. He said his biggest goal was to play as many games as possible at a high level. “I’ve only been in Europe for one year now, there’s still plenty of time for me. “Players here have been here for many years and they have experienced many wins and successes so I am in the perfect environment where I can learn off them and for me I want to continue to learn and to grow and to improve myself. “I look at the boys that are playing week in and week out and how professional they are and that’s why they play. “For me it is perfect to see what they do before training, after training and the extras that go in to it and the amount of hard work they put into it.” Singh said his family had made many sacrifices in order for him to chase his football dreams and they were proud of what he had achieved so far. “My family are extremely happy for me but at the same time they want me to push to get more and more. “I’m very grateful I have a family that drives success and they all work hard and want to improve and be better and that’s what I learnt growing up “I believe if you put in the work you’ll get the rewards.”

Nothing’s Bettathanfast They say you cannot beat speed, and Bettathanfast (right) showed he had enough of it in the hands of co-trainer Nathan Purdon, who edged out his father Mark Purdon, who was steering home Burnham Boy (left) in race eight at the Ashburton Trials on Tuesday. The four-year-old son of Betterthancheddar was rated well clear of his competitors in the R40+ pace but the Mark Jones-trained three-year-old kept his older, more experienced rival honest in the run home. A total of 12 races were held on the, with the All Stars stables stepping out a number of their juvenile stars.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll spend a few hours in training for your taste and intellect, although it feels more like simply following an interest. You’ll get to the good stuff when you go about three levels deeper than typical. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Everyone has something to recommend these days, but the best tips aren’t in advertisements. Instead of doing what people tell you to, follow and adopt the preferences and habits of those you admire. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The sage has abilities of which none know the extent. The guesses arouse veneration. You’ll be powerful as you exercise restraint and cloak yourself in mystery. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): For optimum health, you need exercise, fresh air, fine sleep and sound nutrition. And one more thing... selfexpression. The voice of your soul is longing to be heard. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Keep ramping up your expectation of yourself. It’s what keeps you sharp, awake and improving. But when is this too much? When do you get to relax? Your body, not your mind, will tell you, so listen up. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Pick an action you’d like to turn into a habit. You are at the influence of ultra-encouraging, invisible forces. It will only take half the typical amount of time to get this habit ingrained in your days. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Distinguished abilities are as rare as mediocrities are common. While it is only natural to question your gifts, you cannot afford to indulge these doubts. Someone needs your greatness. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Jump into action and you will quickly be reminded of how invigorating it is to juggle many projects simultaneously, and how satisfying it is to finish them off one by one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The inspiration you need is outside of the normal places you’d look. Ask people you don’t usually talk to. Walk toward what’s new and different. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Solid communication is only possible when you know what’s really being said. You’re excellent at reading between the lines and getting the message inside the message. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People can be terrible at realising their own wants and needs. But your objective eye will be dead-on today. You’ll get a sense of the quiet longings that ride under the surface, and you’ll address them to whatever degree you can. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There are many who will benefit from your organised, direct and efficient manner. There will also be those who are intimidated by this unless it is served up with great warmth and gentleness.

Wild weather brought a premature end to top grade hockey at the weekend, with only one game of men’s 1st grade taking place. Heavy rain lashed the region late on Sunday which resulted in two of the three scheduled 1st grade men’s match-ups being called off. But it wasn’t before a clash of the two unbeaten men’s teams
could commence at the NBS Turf, with Wakanui edging Tinwald Orange 3-2. However with the deteriorating climate, it was decided the two later games, Tinwald Black versus Allenton followed by Hampstead/ Wakanui against Hampstead Lowcliffe, were suspended. It puts Wakanui in pole position in the Mid Canterbury Hockey 1st grade men’s standings. They are now holding a three
point buffer over Tinwald. Meanwhile, both Hampstead teams combined to press competition claims in 1st grade women’s on Friday. The first team, who had started their campaign with two losses, responded by beating Wakanui 3-0. Hampstead Blue meanwhile overpowered Methven 4-0, consigning the out-of-towners to their first loss of the season.
The results mean Hampstead Blue overtakes Methven at the top of the table, with a superior goal difference. Hampstead also moves into third spot over Wakanui, who slump to fourth on the ladder. In senior results from Saturday, Wakanui overcame Temuka 5-3 in the men’s, while in the women’s grade Wakanui were too good for the Cambridge 1st XI 7-3. Sunday’s 2nd grade fixtures
were rounded out with Wakanui going down 4-2 to Cambridge while Tinwald thumped Geraldine 6-0. Local action was completed on Monday with 2nd grade boys matchups. Wakanui beat the Timaru Boys High School Ravens 4-2, but later fell to Mackenzie 4-1. Allenton were unbeaten across the day, drawing with Mackenzie 1-1 before defeating the Ravens 3-0.
