ECan looks at E. coli cause By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Environment Canterbury is investigating the cause of E. coli contamination in private bore water supplies in the north-east of Ashburton. On its radar is effluent disposal, land-use activities, grazing stock on lifestyle blocks, septic tanks, poor well-head protection, and even the nearby Ashburton Cemetery. Shallow groundwater through-
out Canterbury is prone to E. coli contamination from land use, especially following large rainfall events, the regional council says. ECan groundwater science manager Carl Hanson said possible sources of E. coli in groundwater included effluent disposal, onsite wastewater systems and animal grazing. “Cemeteries are also a potential source that we will consider,” he said in an emailed response to the Guardian.
He said the current boil water notice for the area was not sparked by recent results, but by a view of historic data, and was precautionary. Environment Canterbury sampled its regular monitoring wells either annually or quarterly, and carried out one-off investigations in various areas to get a better understanding of the groundwater. “Any well can be at risk of E. coli contamination. In general, the risk is greater in shallower wells,”
Hanson said. “Deeper wells or town supply are possible solutions if the water quality is unacceptable. There are also treatment options for individual households.” The recent routine sampling by ECan also revealed high nitrate levels. This presents a risk to pregnant women and bottle-fed babies less than six months old, as it can cause methaemoglobinaemia, or blue baby syndrome. This is as a

result of nitrates preventing the blood from delivering oxygen effectively in the body, and severe cases can be life-threatening. ECan had recently increased the frequency of its sampling for nitrate in the area, and planned to install a nitrate logger and rain gauge in a shallow well. Investigations on possible land use causes of high nitrates were also under way. There were consented activities in the area which could have had an impact.

Boulder fall results in rescue By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Two people had to be winched out by helicopter after they were struck by a fridge-sized boulder they dislodged in Woolshed Creek last Saturday. Two Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopters were dispatched after two personal locator beacons were activated, said crew chief Rick Knight. “Initially we were told three people had been injured by falling rocks but it only turned out to be two patients,” he said. “They were a couple of people doing some canyoning down in Woolshed Creek. “The woman has attempted to climb out and has fallen and dislodged a boulder that they said was about the size of a fridge and she has fallen around six metres. “It also fell over the male’s leg and caused a lower leg injury.” While both were taken to
Christchurch Hospital, with the woman sustaining back injuries, Knight said things could have been much worse. “With the size of the boulder it could have ended worse,” he said. The location of the patients required the winch on the helicopter to be used to complete the rescue. Knight said due to the popularity of the area with the visitors it was a frequent visiting point for the rescue helicopter. “It is a quite a popular track round to Pinnacles Hut which is a popular rock climbing spot so we are up there quite often,” he said. “In the winter there are a lot of people who go up there and get trapped that are unprepared for the conditions. “The Woolshed Creek Hut is quite accessible with a 4WD track and there have been times we have been pinged to go up there and rescue families that have gotten stuck.”

Wind wreaks havoc throughout district By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Wild winds battered the Ashburton District on Wednesday evening, causing damage to the power network and damaging roofs. Metservice data shows peak wind gusts at the Ashburton Airport were at 83km/h at 6pm. The wind hit hard across the district, including a farm house near Mt Hutt. “It was windy as it always is up here but then there was a whirl of wind out in the paddock like a tornado and the bulls started going crazy and roaring,” the property owner, who asked not to be named, said. “Then there was a huge bang that sounded like an explosion that was the wind hitting the house.” Once the winds had settled slightly they went outside to inspect the damage and saw that their roof had been sucked

outwards, and after inspecting the roof space discovered that sections of the roof framing had been pulled apart. “We have had builders up here today pinning everything down to make it safe,” she said. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.” EA Networks network manager Brendon Quinn said despite the strength of the winds, the network only suffered minor damage. “We have had two feeder outages and three small area outages and several on-property individual outages,” he said. “(The) Hatfield feeder with 242 customers was our biggest outage caused by branches on the line in Thompsons track.” “The outage lasted 42 minutes for all but 40 customers who were without power for an hour and three-quarters until the branches were removed.” The second feeder outage was
on Maronan Road, with 230 customers affected. This outage was caused by a broken conductor on Maronan Road causing the line to come down. This outage lasted an hour for half the customers and a further half hour for the remaining customers while the conductor was repaired. A number of smaller issues also affected customers, including a broken cross arm on Springfield Road that isolated 44 customers for three-and-a-half hours. On Scarness Road eight customers were without power for two hours and five minutes but a cause was not found for this issue, Quinn said. An obscure fault on private property that could not be spotted in the dark caused an outage in the Ashton area that affected 24 customers in total. Sixteen were without pow-
er for four-and-three-quarters hours while the remaining eight were without power overnight. “With the exception of the eight customers in the Ashton area everyone was back on (Wednedsay) night,” Quinn said. “We had staff working on the issues from just after 5pm when the wind hit until 1am.” Firefighters were called out on two occasions in weather related call-outs, with firefighters from Hinds and Ashburton being called out to move fallen branches near railway lines, while crews from Ashburton were called out around halfan-hour later to assist with the downed powerlines on Maronan Road. An Ashburton District Council spokesperson said no damage had been reported to the council, and that rubbish collection services and the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park had not been affected by the wind.
The i-SITE brand might be dying, but information for visitors and locals still needs to be delivered in a co-ordinated way, says Ashburton District councillor Angus McKay. He’s keen to see where and how information about the district is delivered discussed in a workshop with the end goal deciding what an information base should be and what it should deliver. When he presented his quarterly report to the Ashburton District Council on Thursday, Experience Mid Canterbuiry general manager Bruce Moffat said that i-SITES as such were struggling nationally. Only three of the 83 still in existence were making a profit and of those that weren’t profitable, three closed last year, he said. “I-SITES across New Zealand are undertaking a large strategy right now to understand if they will carry on as they are,” Moffat said. Ashburton’s i-SITE closed three years go but Methven’s is still in business. Information about the district has been available at the Ashburton Library and Somerset Grocer but there continues to be a strong community push for a single information base. If i-SITES had had their day, perhaps information centres or unmanned booths were the way of the future but as part of that discussion, the council needed to talk to other organisations who were already providing information, councillor Lynette Lovett said. Information sites were top of a lot of people’s minds at the moment, Carolyn Cameron said. McKay wanted a workshop held to identify how this should be delivered for both visitors and locals and how an information base would fit into the redesigned central business district. Cameron and her fellow councillors supported the idea, but long time opponent of the council funding tourism, Stuart Wilson did not.

■■RURAL WATER ISSUES
No thought of financial, social impacts By Heather Chalmers
heather.c@theguardian.co.nz
Expect some movement from the Government on its freshwater reforms policy, particularly around the controversial proposed bottom line for nitrogen of 1mg/litre, says the National Party’s spokesman for agriculture Todd Muller. Speaking to about 70 people at the Hotel Ashburton, Muller said the Government was trying to have a conversation about freshwater values without a corresponding conversation on the financial, social and cultural implications. “It’s like asking the New Zealand Transport Agency what is the best speed limit to achieve a road toll of zero, which is probably 15 or 25km/h. That’s the result when you don’t think of the financial and social implications.” The Government’s freshwater policy proposal was anchored in a view that the quality of all streams and rivers was deteriorating, which Muller said he rejected “both on data and fact”. The Government and particularly Environment Minister David Parker had a fundamental view that farming impacted negatively on the environment, Muller said. “I reject that. There is no acknowledgement of the work that has gone on in communities like this to improve systems and lessen the impact on the environment,” said Muller, who earlier visited the Hinds managed aquifer recharge project. “It is one long story of adaptation and change for the better.” In terms of mitigating climate change, other countries were focusing on fossil fuel dependence coming from coal, gas, transport, heating and industry, while New Zealand was the only country focused on agricultural emissions. While New Zealand had 25 million sheep and about five million cattle, there were 200m cattle in India. “Let’s get some perspective here.” While change was required, New Zealand farmers were the most efficient food producers in the world and shouldn’t be taxed into a position of competitive disadvantage, Muller said. Environment Canterbury councillor and Eiffelton farmer Ian Mackenzie said that while there was not a lot of environmental gain from dropping the dissolved inorganic nitrogen level of freshwater from the current bottom line of 6.9 to 1mg/litre, the economic and social cost was exponential. Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury president David Clark calculated that if his Valetta farm had to return to a dryland and predominantly sheep operation to meet

National Party spokesman for agriculture Todd Muller talks to Ashburton resident Verna Woods after a meeting on rural and water issues. PHOTO HEATHER CHALMERS the 1mg/l nitrogen threshold, his net cash position would drop by 105 per cent. He compared his current farm system with a dryland operation of 3000 ewes and 50ha of crop. “It was straightforward to do, as it is the farming system we had when we came to the district. So, I looked at our 1994 annual accounts and converted these to 2019 dollar values.” His irrigated farm now runs breeding ewes and trading lambs, and grows grain, forage seed and vegetable seed crops. His calculations showed that if his farm had to revert to its earlier dryland operation to meet the rules, his crop income would be reduced by 92 per cent, sheep gross in-
come by 62 per cent and expenditure by 70 per cent. His earnings before interest and tax (Ebit) would fall by 68 per cent and tax paid by 75 per cent. “If we all had to scale back to that extent, what would Ashburton look like,” Clark said. Muller said it was outrageous that the freshwater reforms had been put on the table without this social and economic analysis. Policy decision making by the Labour Party was coming from a fundamental belief that the New Zealand economy must diversify from its historic dependence on agriculture. This reflected an earlier view that agri-

culture was a sunset industry, “but now they cloak it in different language”. Muller urged farmers to tell their stories on social media to counter the messages coming from groups such as Extinction Rebellion, Generation Zero and Fish and Game. “You are going to have to engage and get your stories out there regularly on all those daily and weekly activities you do and incremental improvements. This is the medium in which people, particularly under 40, communicate with each other, tell their stories and use to amplify their prejudices. “I know it is uncomfortable and it feels like gloating, but we can’t leave this ground for others to fill the debate,” Muller said.

Methven Primary gets into World Cup mode By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
The Methven Primary School Rugby World Cup may have got snowed off last month, but yesterday provided perfect playing conditions for the students to take to the field. This was the third time Methven Primary School has held their world cup and it proved just as popular as ever, with teacher Cheryl Isherwood saying it worked in well with teaching programmes around the tournament. “When the rugby world cup is on the students learn about the countries playing, so this is an extension of that learning,” she said. Three members of the Methven Primary Think Tank Group, Henry Guild, Mackenzie Curry and Charlie Judd helped Isherwood organise the day. The official opening was marked with a rousing rendition of the New Zealand national anthem and raising the flag. Formalities over, the games got under way. The sports field was filled with colour and noise as 295 students dressed in their Rugby World Cup country’s colours enjoyed the fun. On hand to help out were volunteers from the Methven Ruby Club who, along with the
Mid Canterbury Rugby Union and Jason Ree supplied gear and helped with the set-up. Students got to experience many different aspects of the game. The tackle bags and goal kicking both proved popular. John Fulton was the official coach/referee in the touch rugby section. He made sure each player had a turn with the ball so they all enjoyed the game. He said it was a nice feeling to be helping. “Hopefully we may have inspired some kids to get out and play rugby or sport in general.” Isherwood said the non-competitive day was all about the students learning new skills, older students supporting younger ones, trying something different and stepping outside comfort zones. At the end of the day Sporting Value Certificates were given out to students who showed leadership and sportsmanship. “We concentrate on these values throughout the school year, but today we can focus on them a bit more,” she said. Principal Chris Murphy was really happy with the day. “It’s a wonderful partnership with members of the community and our school,” Murphy said.

■■ OPINION
Harsh realities and drastic impacts T
here are some interesting parallels emerging between the Lange Labour government and the present coalition. That these administrations found themselves in office at all came something of a surprise to both of them. That either was not well prepared for office would be to understate the case. Roger Douglas, aided and abetted by sycophantic henchmen Richard Prebble and Trevor de Cleene, both of whom should have known better, rode roughshod over NZ’s farmers and workers while naive and ineffectual PM Lange and Minister of Agriculture, Colin Moyle watched on uselessly. Lange had been sold the story that the financial reforms were necessary if he was to get the funding he wanted for his social reforms. When he realised that this was not going to happen
The following is a letter penned to the Guardian by agribusiness icon, Allan Pye – offering his thoughts on the Freshwater Bill and the impact it will have on rural communities. he pulled the pin on the whole exercise. Douglas and Co. had been crashing ahead with callous indifference to the effects their actions were having on people’s lives until Lange considered the gain was not worth the pain it was causing. In the present example, David Parker is the one who appears to be about to crash ahead with his Essential Freshwater plan. He is part of a pincer movement with James Shaw and his Zero Carbon Bill with its unscientific and unrealistic methane targets. They are being ably facilitated by Winston Peters, who does know better but needs to
keep the process going because of what is in it for him. Damien O’Connor is even less effective than was Colin Moyle and Jacinda Ardern appears to want to be on both sides of the fence at the same time. While in retrospect it could be acknowledged that some of Douglas’ financial reforms were necessary he will never be forgiven by the communities and the people whose lives were ruined by his actions. So it is with the reforms proposed by both Shaw and Parker. If these reforms are implemented within the proposed time frames then recently reinvigorated communities and
another generation of farmers will face the same consequences as their predecessors. The recession that will follow the present ill-advised course of action will be far worse and more long lasting than Douglas’ recession because where Douglas’ actions were confined to financial matters, Parker’s and Shaw’s attack the means of production. It is not financial costs that will go up, it is actual production that will go down, quite dramatically. This cannot help but immediately affect rural communities. Fewer cows being milked means less milk being collected means fewer jobs processing dairy products. The same with
lambs, grain, potatoes and all the commodities produced in rural New Zealand. The projection is that within a few years economies such as those here in Mid Canterbury will contract by 80 per cent. Ashburton will rapidly become a ghost town, Timaru and Oamaru will fare no better and the likes of Waimate and Leeston will simply disappear. What is required now is that all the businesses that service and support Canterbury farming make their feelings known to the various ministers in no uncertain terms, that they do not support the roll out of the proposed freshwater plan in its present form and that where communities decide action is needed those communities take responsibility for implementing those decisions in time frames the communities can cope with. Ashburton River birds wade through tough competition By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton’s river birds are having to wade through a jungle of competition to reach the pinnacle of Bird of the Year 2019. Whether they will get there relies to some degree on the loyalty of Mid Cantabrians. One person they can count on is Ashburton environmentalist Edith Smith, who will make the black-billed gull her first choice, the wrybill her second, the rock wren her third, the banded dotterel her fourth and the black-fronted tern her fifth. Forest and Bird has introduced a new system this year for the annual competition, allowing constituents to vote for five birds. All of Smith’s choices nest in the Ashburton River, except the rock wren, which lives in the Mid Canterbury high country. “They are all endangered in some way,” Smith said. “The black-billed gull is the one people connect with the river, but the river is an important habitat to all of these birds, which have evolved on braided rivers.” The black-billed gull is nesting in colonies at the river mouth, and Forest and Bird
Ashburton, of which Smith is the chairperson, will be surveying other areas of the river later this month to see if there are other colonies upstream. The birds are not nesting in their usually prominent site of the State Highway One bridge, but were highly prominent early spring when about 300 congregated on top of roofs at New World, Harvey Norman and Mitre 10. Smith is urging other Mid Cantabrians to get on board and vote for their favourite bird in the online competition. But she does not hold high hopes of her number one choice winning, even though it doubled its polling numbers last year compared to the previous year. Despite being the world’s rarest gull, the black-billed gull unfortunately did not have the “star” appeal of some of New Zealand’s other birds, she said. And many of the avian candidates had social media savvy campaign managers, determined to get bird lovers on their side. “They go for the cutesiest thing they can find and make a big story of it,” she said. Voting closes at 5pm on November 10.

Less than 50 days till gun amnesty ends If you think you still have plenty of time to hand in your prohibited firearms, think again say Police. “There are just 50 days (from yesterday) to go to hand in prohibited firearms and parts for amnesty and buy-back. There will be no extension so if you want compensation for your firearms, to keep your licence and don’t want to be prosecuted, hand in your firearms now,” Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement said. “Everyone with a prohibited
firearm or part needs to hand them in or they will be breaking the law after the amnesty ends on December 20, 2019.” “The question I have is, what are you waiting for? Anyone prosecuted will lose their firearms licence and face a penalty of up to five years imprisonment. I’d have to say to all the gun clubs and firearms enthusiasts out there, surely this is not what you want – to be unable to enjoy hunting or the hobby you enjoy ever again?” Firearm holders have had
multiple opportunities to hand in their prohibited items since the programme started on June 20. Just over 32,000 firearms have been handed in. “The vast majority of firearms owners understand why we are doing this. To those that have taken part, I say thank you. To those that have yet to do so, the time is now and you have a number of options so there are no excuses,” he said. There are 50 days to go and police want to make it clear what those options are.
They include attending a collection event and hand in your firearms/parts as soon as possible, dropping them into one of the 41 approved dealers. “If you want to hold onto your firearm for sentimental reasons and it can be modified, get this in train now,” he said. “Apply for an endorsement licence if you are a pest controller/collector now. If you think you have a unique/rare item – apply now. “I want to be very clear though. On December 21, whether you
are a licensed firearm holder or a gang member, if you are unlawfully and without authority in possession of a prohibited firearm you will be committing a criminal offence. Failing to comply with the law is not the action of a law abiding licensed firearms holder.” “Please do the right thing.” For more information on the collection events, modification and other options available to you or to seek help with the process please go to www.police. govt.nz or call 0800 311 311.

Fountain springs back to life By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Town pride and community spirit took a surge in Ashburton yesterday afternoon as a newly-renovated water fountain sprung to life. Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL) oversaw the official turning on of the water feature outside the town library at the State Highway One-Havelock Street intersection. Formerly a shadow of its former self, the water feature now glimmers with freshly flowing water, a shimmering glass fish and subtle LED lighting. Plumbing division manager Aaron Gairns told a small gathered crowd, including a group of St Joseph’s School pupils, that the project began after he approached the Ashburton District Council. Like him, the council had no idea why the fountain was no longer working, but did not have a problem with ACL taking on a refurbishment project, Gairns said. “It’s in a real good spot, everyone who drives through Ashburton gets to see it.” Laser Electrical sorted out the pump and installed LED lights beneath each granite plateau. “You need to bring your family down to see it at night.” Glass artist Tash Sim made a “really cool” fish, which has replaced the former deteriorated copper fish that was at the foun-
In brief Dancing competition The Tinwald Memorial Hall will turn into a dancing mecca this weekend as Ashburton hosts a 2019 Dance Competition Season event. New Zealand and Australasian dance champions will be performing, while jazz, tap and other styles have drawn competitors in both solo and troupe categories from Nelson to Timaru. Dance teachers Kaye Blackham and Jan Ruardy are organising the competition, to be held at the hall 9am to 9pm Saturday, 9am to 4pm Sunday. Adjudicator is Melinda Joe, NZAMD (Tap and Jazz), from Auckland. A gold coin conation is appreciated from anyone wanting to pop along and see some of the fantastic dancing on display.

In those days Ashburton had its own townsman, who ensured maintenance of such structures was kept up to scratch.
“It’s just changing times,” Pickford said. He had known Robert and Myra McElhinney, who bequeathed the structure. McElhinney was a barber on Tancred Street, where Pickford grew up, and had not only cut his hair but was a good friend of his father’s.
“He was just a genuine good guy,” Pickford said. Gairns gave a multi-choice fountain quiz sheet after his talk to the school pupils, and the highest scorer was 12-year-old Ben Ciron. Ben not only got to turn on the fountain, but was the first to drink from the drinking fountain at the top of the structure.
AWOL piglet likely to be adopted out By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

A piglet found in a South Canterbury passing lane over a month ago has still not been claimed and is expected to be fostered out in a couple of months’ time. The piglet, who has been named Charlotte after the movie Charlotte’s Web, has truly become a house pig with her foster parents, says SPCA Ashburton Centre manager Rebecca Dobson. “She is doing really well at being a house pig, she has toys and has beds inside and outside,” she said. “They are really intelligent and about as smart as a dog so they can be trained to go to the toilet
outside.” Dobson said they were not 100 per cent sure on what breed the piglet was, but they suspected she could be a wild pig breed. Still only young, they estimate she could one day grow to be the size of a sheep. Dobson said they will look to adopt her out in the next couple of months where she can happily live as a pet house pig. Charlotte weighed just 1.4kg when she arrived at the centre, and started out under a heatlamp to warm up. Staff said they rarely see cases like this at the centre, and that she was the first pig to visit the Ashburton Centre.
A coin toss has decided who will take the final seat on the Queenstown Lakes District Council. The toss took place at 3pm and fell in favour of Glyn Lewers who will take the last seat at the table for the council. The recount of votes at the district court ended with AJ Mason and Glyn Lewers tied on 2183 votes. Glyn Lewers applied for the recount on October 21. The coin toss was held in front of the media at the council offices in Gorge Rd. Judge Callaghan said a $2 coin would be used. Lewers had heads, and Mason had the tails side. - NZME
‘We need to be better’ A marine biologist says we need to learn to live with wildlife better as the search continues for who shot Owha, Auckland’s resident leopard seal. The celebrity seal, who measures over 3m in length and weighs about 400kg, was spotted bleeding from her face at the weekend from a suspected bullet wound. Marine conservation society Sea Shepherd this week put up a $5000 reward for any evidence leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible. Department of Conservation operations manager Kirsty Prior said yesterday a marine ranger assessed Owha and while she appeared stable, there were still concerns she could deteriorate. “We’ll be keeping a close eye on her.” DoC had been receiving reports from the public regarding her injury but would not release any details while they were investigating. - NZME

‘Capture or kill him’ NZME Four female terrorists were among those killed by US Special Forces in Saturday night’s raid that resulted in the death of Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Pentagon says. The head of US Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, addressed a media conference in Washington DC yesterday where he walked reporters through the first declassified footage and revealed new details of the daring operation in northwestern Syria. Gen. McKenzie said al-Baghdadi was the subject of an “intense inter-agency effort to bring him to justice, and that effort significantly advanced recently as we closed in on his whereabouts”. “As it became clear that we had gained fleeting and actionable intelligence on his hide-out, we developed an execution level plan designed to capture or kill him and started preparing a special operations team for the mission,” he said. “The general outline of the mission was a helicopter assault by Special Operation Forces that were pre-staged in Syria. I can assure you that the plan was significantly more complex than that, and designed to avoid detection by Isis and others prior to and during execution, to avoid civilian casualties.” The black-and-white aerial video shows an attack helicopter bombardment on Baghdadi’s compound just outside the village of Barisha in Idlib province in northwest Syria,
Labbett’s dramatic loss The Chase star Mark The Beast Labbett has shown off his dramatic weight loss, sporting a much trimmer figure as he made a guest appearance at a small town pub quiz. According to the Mirror, Labbett has been focusing on losing weight for the past six months, and has now dropped just under 20kg thanks to cutting back on sugar and running around after his son. The change was prompted after he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which can be caused by obesity. Labbett has been keeping fans updated on his weight loss journey on Twitter.
The compound of Isis leader al-Baghdadi. Inset: General Frank McKenzie. before around nine members of the assault force move in. “At the compound, fighters from two locations in the vicinity of the compound began firing on US aircraft participating in the assault. These fighters opened fire on our aircraft and what you see in the video is the actual response,” Gen. McKenzie said. “With the assault force surrounding the compound, we repeatedly urged those inside to come out peacefully. Those who came out of the building were checked for weapons and
explosives, and moved away from the immediate area. US forces detained and later released the non-combatants.” Gen. McKenzie said the group, which included 11 children, was “treated humanely at all times”. “Five Isis members inside the compound presented a threat to the force. They did not respond to commands in Arabic to surrender, and they continued to threaten the force. They were then engaged by the raid force and killed. There were four women and
one man.” Gen. McKenzie said once they entered the compound, US forces discovered al-Baghdadi “hiding in a tunnel”. “When capture at the hands of US forces was imminent, Baghdadi detonated a bomb he wore, killing himself and two young children who were with him,” he said. Gen. McKenzie said al-Baghdadi’s remains were later “buried at sea in accordance with the law of armed conflict within 24 hours of his death”.
■■CHILE
Summits cancelled amid protest chaos AP Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said yesterday that he is cancelling two major international summits so he can respond to protracted nationwide protests over economic inequality that have left more than a dozen people dead, hundreds injured and businesses and infrastructure damaged. The decision to call off the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation and UN global climate gatherings, planned for November and December, respectively, dealt a major blow to Chile’s image as a regional oasis of stability and economic development. Piñera said he was forced to cancel both events due to the chaos unleashed by 12 days of protests. Demonstrators are demanding greater economic equality and better public services in a country long seen
Anti-government demonstrators gather outside La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago, Chile. PHOTO AP as an economic success story. Shops have been vandalised and buildings set on fire, shutting down numerous subway stations. The situation had stabilised somewhat by midday yesterday, Except for the presence of a few hundred protesters, the streets of the capital, Santiago,
were mostly quiet, with no reports of vandalism. “This has been a very difficult decision that causes us great pain,” Piñera said in a televised address. “A president always has to put the needs of his countrymen first.” Opposition and pro-government parties in Chile generally
welcomed the president’s decision, saying that having the summits was unrealistic given the circumstances. Trade and climate negotiators scrambled to find new locations for their summits, aimed at resolving tariff-related conflicts between China and the US and finalising countries’ climate rules in advance of a bigger summit next year during which governments will be asked to commit to new emissions limits. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had hoped to sign a modest trade agreement at the APEC summit, formerly scheduled to take place in Santiago on November 16-17. Under the tentative deal, the US had agreed to suspend plans to raise tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports, and Beijing had agreed to step up purchases of US farm products.
Stardom sparked PTSD Shia LaBeouf was diagnosed with PTSD, partly due to his experiences of being a child star. The 33-year-old actor shot to fame starring as Louis Stevens in the Disney Channel series Even Stevens when he was 14, and he has opened up about his traumatic childhood – including his parents splitting when he was just five and growing up with an alcoholic father – and how stardom early in life led to his diagnosis. Shia has penned the screenplay for the autobiographical drama Honey Boy, which tells the story of “A young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health.”
Comedian Hart opens up Comedian Kevin Hart says his “world was forever changed” after he suffered a serious back injury when the vintage muscle car he was riding in crashed nearly two months ago in California. In a video posted on Instagram, the 40-year-old thanked his family and friends and reflected on how he now sees life differently. Hart says not to take today for granted. He says: “When God talks, you gotta listen. And in this case, I honestly feel like God basically told me to sit down. After my accident, I see things differently. I see life from a whole new perspective.

■■ANZ BUSINESS OUTLOOK SURVEY
Business confidence stabilising By Liam Dann NZME
It’s too soon to call it a turnaround in business confidence, but ... Relative to the big slumps in sentiment the ANZ Business Outlook Survey has recorded in the past year, there are some positive signs in yesterday’s release. Perhaps the worst is over. “It’s a start,” said ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner. “All up, we’d take the mixed signals out of this month’s survey as a positive sign, as it interrupts a deteriorating trend.” Headline confidence actually jumped in the October survey, suggesting that optimism may be starting to creep back into the general business outlook. Perhaps it’s the arrival of spring but since the last survey there have been some reassuring signs of progress in the US/China trade dispute, New Zealand commodity export prices have improved and Fonterra has upped its milk price payout. Retail borrowing rates have continued to fall and we’ve even seen the Government make a few
ANZ Bank chief economist Sharon Zollner. business-friendly policy calls. The ANZ survey has attracted controversy for effectively pointing the way on the economic slowdown this year. But this month headline business confidence jumped 12 points. Zollner calls the increase in business confidence welcome, al-

Pricing intentions rose six points, with a net 24 per cent of firms now expecting to raise prices, but they fell 10 points in the retail sector. Inflation expectations were broadly unchanged at 1.62 per cent. Cost pressures rose one point, with a net 48 per cent of firms now expecting higher costs. A continued downward trend in employment intentions remains concerning – they were down one point, with a net 9 per cent of firms intending to reduce employment. The retail sector also remained very downbeat. “Of all the sectors, they have the weakest own activity, profits and employment (despite pretty robust consumer confidence), and the highest expected cost pressure,” Zollner said. “Encouragingly, things seem to be looking up for the construction sector. It is among the strongest (not saying a great deal, admittedly) for business confidence, profits, investment and capacity utilisation.”

though she notes this question is the one that respondents can answer with the least certainty. It has certainly been the one that critics of the survey have been quickest to dismiss. She warns that a net 42 per cent of respondents still report that they expect general business conditions to deteriorate in the year
ahead. “The expected own activity measure is something firms know more about and so is a better economic indicator,” she said. “This ticked down again.” “However, it appears that the activity indicators are generally finding a floor. It’s true that the levels for most indicators remain uninspiring, but it’s good to see signs of bottoming out”. Firms’ expectations for their own activity over the year ahead (which is considered a better economic indicator) fell two points to -4, the fifth fall in a row. It was the lowest read since April 2009 but was still well off the recession low of -21. More positive was that profit expectations rose four points, although they remain in the red with a net 21 per cent of respondents expecting profitability to decline. Commercial construction intentions jumped 13 points to be flat; residential lifted 14 points to -5. Investment intentions rose three points but remain negative at -6 per cent.

ew Zealand shares were largely steady in a shortened trading week due to Labour Day on Monday. Overseas, central bank announcements filled headlines, and the ongoing global reporting season continued to sway markets. Doubts are growing surrounding the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s (RBNZ’s) future interest rate decision. RBNZ Assistant Governor Christian Hawkesby’s speech in Sydney on Monday has resulted in analysts second-guessing another interest rate cut. Some now expect the RBNZ to leave the cash rate at 1 per cent in November. The RBNZ stated that recent domestic data may not justify a cut, while global sentiment is improving, and overseas central banks have indicated they will take a pause. Market expectations for further interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of Australia have also declined, with figures showing inflation rose in the September quarter to 1.7 per cent annually. Freightways buys refrigerated trucking firm Big Chill Distribution. Courier and data management company Freightways is moving into refrigerated trucking. Big Chill operates a fleet of more than 200 refrigerated trucks and trailers which delivers chilled and frozen produce around the country. Freightways will pay an initial $117m upfront, representing 80 per cent of the total purchase price, with the remaining 20 per cent to be paid in 2022 based on Big Chill’s earnings performance.
Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS
In Australia, Woolworths reported an impressive set of numbers for the first quarter of FY20. Same store sales growth in the core food business came in at 6.6 per cent for the quarter. This is especially impressive in the context of key competitor, Coles, reporting flat sales growth over the same period. Increased sales were driven by a step-up in foot traffic, along with customers spending more at each trip. Online sales increased 43 per cent, outpacing Coles’ growth at 24 per cent. Following a wage review, Woolworths has flagged wage underpayment for salaried employees since 2010. The estimated cost for the back-payment is $200-300m. Global reporting season continues to occupy Wall Street’s attention. This week we saw better than expected results from Alphabet and Amazon. Alphabet’s revenue of $US40.5b was up 21.3 per cent, while operating income of $US9.2b increased 6.4 per cent on the prior year. Amazon produced another impressive top-line performance through the third quarter. Operating income of $US3.2b was ahead of guidance, despite declining 15.8 per cent on the prior year. Positive news for Johnson &
Johnson. J&J announced on Wednesday that new tests found no asbestos in the same baby powder bottle that triggered a recall. Fifteen new tests found no traces in a bottle of baby powder that the US Food and Drug Administration said tested positive for trace amounts of asbestos, a finding the agency stands by. Shares in the company rose after the news. UK lawmakers agreed to hold a general election on December 12. The people of Britain will vote in the month of December for the first time since 1923. It will be the fourth time they have voted in less than four years. MPs backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s fourth attempt to secure an early general election, betting his government and Brexit on the vote. Polls currently suggest that Johnson’s Government could be well placed to improve its situation in an election. The US Federal Reserve cuts rates again. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut interest rates for the third time this year to help boost US growth. However, the announcement signalled there would be no further reductions unless the economy takes a turn for the worst. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said after the announcement that the Fed believed monetary policy is in a good place. Jeremy Flood works for Craigs Investment Partners. The ‘R’ alternative
T
here’s an impressive number of the latest model Honda Civic Type Rs lurking in the garages of some lucky owners about Ashburton. These $59,990 Type Rs, with their aerodynamic skirts, large rear wings and triple exhausts are fast and entertaining – not just in a straight line, but around corners too! For a start their 2-litre turbo-petrol engines develop 228kW and 400Nm of torque from 2500 to 4500rpm. They have a fast-to-shift six-speed manual and front wheel drive complete with a special differential to minimise both wheel-spin and torque-steer. Add in the very sporty suspension complete with adaptive shock-absorbers, large Brembo brakes and those 20-inch alloys shod with wide 245/30ZR tyres. The rewards just keep on coming! And that’s even in Comfort setting of the three mode drive system, of which R (for race) is best reserved for the likes of the Ruapuna race track to experience 0-100kmh times of under six seconds, and lots more thrills. You experience those thrills from within the very usable, sportily-furnished but comfy cabin with its red highlights and trim. It’s a practical four seater (seat-belted accordingly), plus the boot holds a decent 420 litres for touring.
But hold on – what has this to do with the RS Sensing Sedan? Well both it and the RS Hatch ($41,990) now have same intuitive and effective ‘Sensing’ safety and advanced driver-assist technologies as does the Type R. They both have smart, high tech, 1.5-litre, four cylinder VTEC, single scroll turbo-petrol engines producing 127kw at 5500 rpm and maximum torque of 220 Nm between 1700-5500 rpm. While that’s respectively just a little more than half of what the Type R produces, the Sedan performs very keenly, especially so in S mode and when using Honda’s variation of paddles. And while it has a CVT auto, most times you are not aware of this because it reacts really well to both the driver’s wants and the engine’s torque delivery. The stated overall fuel economy figure is 6.3L/100kms and that indicated over 350km was 7.0L/100kms. While those eagle-eyed Honda-philes would never mistake this Phoenix Orange RS for a Type R, the close family relationship is definitely noticeable. Especially with boot spoiler (much more restrained and certainly less noticeable than the Type R’s though) the gloss black exterior garnishing as well as the similarly shaded, new 18-inch alloys with their wide 235/40 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. The greater grip of the latter, together with revisions to the suspension, plus the
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
already positive and quick steering adds up to an excellent sum of responsive, predictable and enjoyable handling. Those who enjoy such will appreciate it from the leather-clad interior, wherein there’s a subtle reference to the Type R with the red seat trim stitching. The front seats are heated. While Civics are in the small car sector, small they are not. Inside there’s plenty of space, both front and back, as well as the boot, which will take 519 litres. Although the sedan’s instrument panel and controls have also been updated it doesn’t get sat-nav, which the RS Hatch version does, as well as a sun roof. From a safety perspective some of the very comprehensive Sensing systems, such as the forward collision warning (a red light first flashes on the dash and if you don’t react the car’s braking system will) and road departure mitigation are active from start up. Others including lane departure warn-
ing/lane keep assist and the excellent adaptive cruise control are selectable. Around town the front/rear parking sensors and reversing camera proved very helpful, as did the unique lane-watch camera in the left side mirror.
HONDA CIVIC RS SEDAN ■■ Pricing: $39,990 (other Civics from $32,990 to $59,990 for Type R) - plus ORCs. ■■ Engine: 1.5-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol, 127kW and 220Nm of torque. ■■ Transmission: CVT–front-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 6.3L/100km. ■■ Tows: 800kg (braked) ■■ Safety: comprehensive advanced driver assist/safety technology package. 5 star ANCAP rating. ■■ Turning circle: 10.9 metres. ■■ Warranty: 5 years/unlimited ks.
FINALE So for those who lust after a Type R but the cost of which is too great, this Civic RS is a very worthy alternative. It’s an inviting package with its smart technology, advanced safety, performance, space and comfort.

Mazda New Zealand Managing Director, David Hodge believes the company has succeed in creating an EV that still delivers the exciting driving experience people expect from Mazda. “There has been increasing interest from the New Zealand motoring public in EVs and we believe the stylish look and performance of the MX-30 will see it at the top of peoples consideration list. “Under the Car-as-Art ethos, the styling of MX-30 aims to raise its artistic value and expand the expressive range of Mazda’s Kodo-Soul of Motion design language. “Based on a concept of “Human Modern,” the design stays grounded in the beautifully honed, handcrafted forms of Kodo, yet aligns itself with changing values and new lifestyles. Spaces around the centre console give the cabin an open feel, and environmentally conscious materials such as cork and fabrics made from recycled materials are used in ways that bring out their natural appeal, creating a comfortable interior space. In addition, the MX-30 adopts freestyle doors so customers can invent new and creative ways of using the car. In line with the human-centric philosophy, Mazda engineers were determined to deliver the same Jinba-ittai driving joy that every Mazda offers in the EV as well.

Endurance showdown T
he best endurance racing drivers and cars from both the North Island and the South Island will come together to battle it out in one of the biggest long distance motorsport races the country has ever seen when the New Zealand Endurance Championship final is played out on November 16 at the fantastic Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, international circuit, in the North Waikato. The race weekend will also offer domestic New Zealand drivers and teams a very rare opportunity to compete on the full 3.8km international circuit, the most significant part of the circuit’s redevelopment when current owner and racer Tony Quinn purchased the circuit in 2015. The additional straight and the challenging new corners before the international layout re-joins the old national layout will test competitors and bring out the best in the cars’ performance according to organiser Kel McBeath. “Using the international layout certainly adds another dimension to the whole weekend for the New Zealand racers who will compete in the national final, no question,” he said. “I mean, who doesn’t want to see Nick
Chester’s Holden tearing out of Turn 1 and down the straight? The GT cars that will compete will be completely at home on the international layout and it will be great to see the smaller teams and less exotic machinery from both the one and three hour fields adapt and get used to the circuit layout. “It’s such a rare opportunity and we are
optimistic of an impressive field in both endurance races.” Great drivers and great cars are a feature of the endurance scene in New Zealand and the big race weekend could include GT machinery from Audi, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin and Chevrolet as well as drivers like former A1GP racer Jonny Reid, New Zealand touring car and
V8 Supercar icon Paul Radisich and Asian GT driver Jono Lester. The North Island vs South Island Cup is also up for grabs and although it has been in the hands of the South Island for the past two seasons, an optimistic but tongue-in-cheek McBeath reckons its heading back to the North Island this time around.

OUR VIEW
Much more than candy floss and hot dogs
T
o the untrained eye the annual Ashburton A&P Show might seem little more than a sea of candy floss, hot dogs, sideshows and stalls, but the meaning behind why we get together every year for two days of celebrating the agricultural and pastural side of life is so much more. And right now, considering the current climate that our rural community is facing, there will be no better sign of support to those who are doing it tough, or facing the prospect of it being tough, than by showing up in our droves to the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds over the next two days. It is, after all, about them. It’s
their two days to shine. With the freshwater bill sitting firmly in the back of most minds in the rural sector and the ever-present impact of mycoplasma bovis still there for the dairy and beef sector, it’s tough times. But as a collective, we are far stronger than any challenge that can be thrown in our direction. Those who think they know better
can make decisions which have devastating impacts, but they must do so knowing that even the smallest of rural communities won’t take things lying down. Well-known farmer Allan Pye makes some really strong points in his letter on P4 of today’s Guardian. He doesn’t hold back, tells it how it is and isn’t afraid to come out and say exactly what the ramifications of some decisions might be should they go ahead. And that’s what we need – honesty, openness and transparency. Don’t sit in the comfort of Wellington and tell us what you think we want to hear. Tell us how it is straight, with-
out the fluffy bits attached to the side that simply make things look pretty. Literally hundreds of people will walk into the Ashburton showgrounds over the next two days – but so many of them will do so not really knowing of the challenges that the farming community is facing. They’ll see rural folk lined up with all their flash, shiny-looking gear and think life must be good because the equipment looks flash and expensive, but they won’t realise that without those tools of the trade so many everyday pleasures that we get to enjoy as urban dwellers wouldn’t be made available without them.
So, it’s important that we get to understand just what is involved in these processes and what potential changes being mooted in Government might mean for some of those things we take for granted around here. If you’re at the show today, stop a farmer, or a rural contractor, or representative and have a chat with them about what they do, how they do it and how they feel things are going to pan out. But most of all, lend your ear to them. Show your support – even better, go green for rural and stand in solidarity. It’s the perfect occasion for it all to happen.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, November 1, the 305th day of 2019. There are 60 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On November 1, 1936, in a speech in Milan, Italy, Benito Mussolini described the alliance between his country and Nazi Germany as an “axis” running between Rome and Berlin. On this date: In 1604, William Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello was first presented at Whitehall Palace in London. In 1765, the Stamp Act, passed by the British Parliament, went into effect, prompting stiff resistance from American colonists. In 1861, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln named Maj Gen. George B McClellan General-in-Chief of the Union armies, succeeding Lt Gen Winfield Scott. In 1898, the Old-age Pensions Act became law in New Zealand. In 1944, over 800 Polish refugees disembarked in Wellington, New Zealand, seeking safety from war-torn Europe, it was the end of a long and perilous journey. In 1945, Ebony, a magazine geared toward black readers, was first published. In 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists tried to force their way into Blair House in Washington, DC, in a failed attempt to assassinate President Harry S. Truman. In 1952, the United States exploded the first hydrogen bomb, codenamed Ivy Mike, at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. In 1968, the Motion Picture Association of America unveiled its new voluntary film rating system: G for general, M for mature, R for restricted and X for adults only. In 1989, East Germany reopened its border with Czechoslovakia, prompting tens of thousands of refugees to flee to the West. In 1995, Bosnia peace talks opened in Dayton, Ohio, with the leaders of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia present. In 2003, Democratic presidential

e took advantage of the long weekend and went through to Hanmer for three nights last weekend. Ahh yes, the long weekend away. Chillin’ with the family, relaxing away from work. Obviously my brother-in-law didn’t get that memo. Pretty much as soon as we were unpacked and settled into our rental for the weekend, he had me out on our push bikes. “Just a wee strop around the ‘easy rider’ to loosen up after the drive,” he said. Hanmer is home to some sensational biking tracks and they cater for all levels. The easy rider is an ideal warm-up before heading higher and harder for the experienced rider, but interesting enough to keep the novice entertained and get a sweat up. The next two days we biked over 30km which included over 500m of elevation. It doesn’t seem like that much when you say it out loud, but when you’re slogging away uphill or blasting downhill way too fast for your skill level, it is a different story. The tracks are awesome fun! It would have been nice to have a soak in the hot pools
The Pitch & Putt and mini putt rivalry is playing out. each evening, but to be honest we were happy sitting around enjoying some family time and rehydrating. As much as the drive to Hanmer is reasonably pleasant, especially north of Christchurch, I reckon the attraction of Hanmer could possibly wane in the nottoo-distant future. Why drive the two-and-a-half hours and fork out the money for accommodation when we could drive to Methven. Manda and I sampled the bike tracks at the base of Mt Hutt on a date day last year and we were both impressed. We would have been even more impressed if we’d gone UP the right track instead of taking a DOWN track by mistake and spending a fair amount of time off the bikes and pushing. From what I’m hearing, the tracks have improved heaps and are great riding.
LETTERS
They even have shuttle runs! Throw your bike on the trailer and hop in the van for a lift up to the top of the tracks. For a downhill specialist (lazy bugger) like me, this is ideal. Methven could soon have hot pools to rival Hanmer’s as well. But as much as Methven is likely to match Hanmer for attractions in the near future, there’s nothing like actually getting away for a few days eh? Packing up the car, which is pretty much exactly the same as a game of Jenga. Carefully placing and balancing items, but one false move and it all comes down around your feet. Packing enough food to last 14 days instead of four, even after planning out each meal, while wandering around the supermarket the day before departure. The Pitch & Putt and mini putt rivalry.
Giving in to Manda’s constant requests to play board games in the evenings. Trying to focus on the telly while one (or more) of the family is “cutting down trees” on the couch. Yep the long weekend away is great fun, but it’s always nice to get home again afterwards and appreciate those comforts. So Hanmer, we will be back, but be warned, you’re on notice, Methven is ready to pounce! ■■EMPIRE ROSE STAKES
Belle hitting all the right notes NZME A sparkling trackwork gallop at Flemington on Tuesday has given Matamata trainer Jamie Richards all the assurance he wanted from stable star Melody Belle as she heads in to Saturday’s Gr.1 $1 million Empire Rose Stakes (1600m). The Commands five-year-old mare is a $3.40 favourite for the weight-for-age fillies and mares feature despite drawing barrier 13 as she chases the tenth Group One win of her career. “She’s in good form,” Richards said. “She worked well at Flemington on Tuesday morning on the course proper. “It looked to be very good, strong work and Craig Thornton and Brad Taylor, who has been a big help to us in Melbourne, were both impressed with what they saw. They are very happy with her. “We were going to give her a jumpout at Flemington last Friday but we didn’t think she needed it. She didn’t look like she needed it and her weight is good. “With her recent racing, she’s very fit and the month between runs is fine for her dropping back to 1600m. “She doesn’t let us down and her record suggests she’s one out of the box.” Bred by Marie Leicester and raced by the Fortuna Melody Belle Syndicate, Melody Belle has won 14 of her 24 starts, including the Gr.2 Queensland Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm as a two-year-old. She was bought by Te Akau principal David Ellis for $57,500
Melody Belle has trainer Jamie Richards in very confident mood for Saturday’s big race. at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Haunui Farm and has topped $2 million in earnings. In October, she became the first horse to win the Hawke’s Bay
weight-for-age triple crown of the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m), Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) and Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m). “Her draw is a bit awkward for Saturday but she will enjoy the
roomy Flemington track,” Richards said. “There doesn’t look to be a lot of speed in the race but one thing that we know about her is she can relax off the speed and quick-
■■MELBOURNE CUP
In brief
Vets may decide field for big feature NZME For the second time in two years the Melbourne Cup fate of a Kiwi contender could be decided by Victorian vets. But this time it could work in favour of Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. Two years ago the pair had ATC Derby winner Jon Snow forced out of the Cup by Victorian Racing Club vets, who examine every Melbourne Cup acceptor in the days before the great race. Jon Snow was forced out of the Cup by what was judged to be minor soreness two years ago but this week the pressure is going on a couple of the European visitors for the race and that could greatly aid the Baker-Forsman-trained The Chosen One. The winner of the Herbert Power at Caulfield two starts ago, The Chosen One sits 26th in the order of rankings for the Cup, with 24 final acceptors to be declared on Saturday night.
en just as well as she can if she takes up a good spot closer to the speed. “She’s very versatile and we’ll just leave that up to Opie (Bosson, jockey).” Richards has made no firm plans for Melody Belle after the Empire Rose Stakes but was open to the possibility of backing up in Saturday week’s Gr.1 $2 million Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), also at Flemington. “If she was to win very impressively we would give thought to backing up in the Mackinnon but we’ve never backed her up before,” he said. “She’s been up a long time and done a bit of travelling, so we’ll put her first whatever happens. “But she’s in good health and sound and that’s been her biggest attribute right through. “Touch wood, we’ve never had to treat a joint or had a problem with her.” Meanwhile, closer to home Richards has runners at New Plymouth today and at Awapuni and Pukekohe on Saturday. “Prise De Fer and Weaponry will run at Pukekohe. “They’ve got big weights but they are two nice progressive horses,” he said. Other upcoming stable engagements will see Aotea Lad tackle the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld NZ 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on Saturday week and Folk Dress contest the Gr.1 gavelhouse.com NZ 1000 Guineas at Riccarton a week later, with Al Haram earmarked for the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup, running the same day.
There are no emergencies declared for a Melbourne Cup. Although a lot can change between now and the final field cut-off, overseas raiders Marmelo, who finished second in the Cup last year, and fellow UK galloper Ispolini are being re-examined by the VRC vets. They and other overseas visitors, including defending champion Cross Counter, were examined by a bone scanning machine which is now being used at the Werribee quarantine and training facility the northern hemisphere horses all pass through. The VRC vets were not entirely happy with the results for Marmelo nor Ispolini so will talk to their trainers and monitor both horses further between now and the Cup. Their trainers were playing down any concerns about being forced out of the Cup yesterday but with horse welfare the hot button issue in Australian racing, the official vets are being more thorough.
If the pair did come out, The Chosen One could technically be in the final Cup 24 before Saturday, but there is also a chance he could be leapfrogged by the winner of the Lexus tomorrow a win-and-you-are-in last chance saloon for Cup aspirants. One of those will be Matamata-trained Sir Charles Road, who even after a consistent Sydney spring and finishing seventh in the Melbourne Cup last season sits 29th, so almost certainly needs to win to the Lexus make the Cup. So Baker faces an uncertain week but at this stage could run The Chosen One in the Lexus. “At this stage we are planning to start him because he probably needs to win it to get in,” says Baker. “I am aware of those two European horses they are looking at and anything could change before the weekend. “But we would want to be 23rd in the order to consider not starting him on Saturday because the winner of the Lexus could get
over top of him, too, if he was only 24th. “So he is starting at this stage and we have up until the weekend to make that decision.” The in-form jockey Mark Zahra has been booked for The Chosen One should he start but he won’t be available for the Melbourne Cup so if they fouryear-old makes next Tuesday’s A$7,750,000 race a new rider will be needed. One Baker-Forsman representative definitely starting at Flemington on Saturday is Long Jack, who has drawn barrier 16 in the A$2million VRC Derby. “You wouldn’t believe the run we have had with draws, with horses like Madison County, The Chosen One and this horse. “And make no mistake, draws can win you these big races, especially in a race like the Derby which has a very tricky starting point. “So we are happy with the horse and at least we have Craig Williams on but it still isn’t going to be easy.”
Lucrative incentive Kiwi trainers will get the opportunity to scoop a $21,000 Karaka Yearling Sales windfall thanks to the generosity of Dunstan Feeds, as the feed merchant celebrates its 21st year of sponsoring the popular Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship. In a promotion with NZ Bloodstock and the Auckland Racing Club, and with the backing of the NZ Trainers’ Association, NZ Thoroughbred Racing and the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, Dunstan Feeds will offer a novel incentive of a $21,000 credit towards a purchase at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales in January next year to the winning trainer. - NZME
Bright future predicted Peter Williams is harbouring Group One ambitions with talented Per Incanto mare Marzemino. The Byerley Park trainer will produce Marzemino fresh-up in Saturday’s Roger Gill Agriculture 1200 at Pukekohe, the first step of a campaign that could lead to multiple Group One races this season. “We’re very happy with her. She’s trialled up well in preparation for this,” said Williams, who trains in partnership with his wife Dawn. - NZME

Methven’s new-look meeting By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Harness racing’s newest partnership will launch its attack on the Canterbury racing scene today when grass track action makes a surprise stop off in Methven. The Methven Trotting Club lobbied Harness Racing New Zealand for the prospect of adding an extra meeting to their annual calendar and came up with a rapid-fire Friday afternoon meeting to cater for the plethora of horses around at this time of the year. And Harness Racing New Zealand were happy to oblige. The eight-race card will be all done and dusted within three and a half hours and while there’s no big names in action, some intriguing and even-looking fields will make for an interesting day of action. There will be a lot of attention focused on the new-look training
team of Brendon Hill and Mark Jones, who officially launch as a training partnership today after announcing they were combining forces last month. The Group One-winning trainers bring together a combination of incredible skill and talent as horsemen in what should prove to be a powerful stable moving forward. Under the banner Elite Racing, the duo line up five runners today and hold more than one strong chance of kicking things off in a winning fashion. “This is a new challenge, something we all need from time to time and I am very keen to get rolling, improve myself and my horses,” Jones said of the new partnership. “Two good training brains coming together, bouncing ideas off each other, pre-planning our targets – it’s going to work really well.

“We can travel our horses, some may be in Auckland others in Invercargill. “One day we could well be on the same property, for now it’s perfect on different facilities with different training ideas we can have the horses in the place that suits them best. “I see no negatives. “Horses do suit one trainer and not another. We’re open to making those changes when needed.” Hill said when the combination was announced that he was looking forward to the challenge as well. “Really, really looking forward to it, to be honest,” he said. “I think it comes down to us probably enjoying it more – if I was to be honest I could say we’ve both been treading water to a

certain degree and this gives us both a really good lift, it’s something very positive and I’m keen to work really hard and give it a good crack. “If anything, it just takes a wee bit of pressure off both of us to run this as a business together.” The pair are continuing to run separate stables with Hill based in North Canterbury and Jones domiciled at Burnham. Today their racing team consists of handy maidens Fine By Me and Mrs Washington along with fellow pacers, Donegal Gilbert and Beaudiene Overtake, while talented, but enigmatic trotter Sioux Princess will also don the new look stable colours – a combination of the two trainers’ previous silks, in a wide opening trotting affair late in the day.

Butt scores top drive No Inters for Oscar By Adam Hamilton
By Michael Guerin
Champion driver Anthony Butt has landed the plum drive on star Aussie trotter Tough Monarch through NZ Cup Week and the Auckland Inter Dominion. Trainer Rickie Alchin, who arrived in New Zealand with Tough Monarch on Wednesday, said he was thrilled to have Butt aboard. “I wanted a top Kiwi driver, one who has the score on the board in big races over here,” he said. “Anthony might be based in Sydney now, but his record in the big NZ races is outstanding. “It’s great to have him driving for us.” Butt now has drives in at least three major races during Cup Week, having already been confirmed for the Aussie-owned Line Up in the 3YO Sires Stake final. “It was exciting to get the callup to drive Line Up for Emilio (Rosati, owner) and now for Rickie and owners to give me the drive on Tough Monarch is terrific,” Butt said. “I’d originally planned to take
A desire to take on some of the best trotters in the world is one reason Oscar Bonavena won’t be at this season’s Inter Dominions in Auckland. Because trainer Mark Purdon believes the sensational fouryear-old is good enough to race extensively in North America and that is his ambitious long-term aim with Monday’s stunning Ashburton winner. Purdon and training partner Natalie Rasmussen didn’t pay up for the Inter Dominions which begin at Alexandra Park on November 29, preferring to concentrate on the Dominion at Addington on November 15 and Australia later in the season. “I think if we look after him now it will pay dividends in the long run and the series can be hard on horses,” said Purdon. “So he will miss the Inters and his next start will be in the Dominion. “Then he can head north for the Flying Mile at Cambridge
Anthony Butt is no stranger to success on New Zealand tracks. Emilio’s trotter Lily Stride across, but she didn’t go well enough last Sunday at Menangle. “I’ll stay the week for the Cup, I’ve already picked up another drive during the week as well. “As far as the Inter Dominion goes, I guess I’ll stay that first week for the heats and take it from there.”
Alchin said that Tough Monarch had settled well in New Zealand. “He handled he trip well and it’s good to get across nice an early,” he said. “As planned, he’ll go the Cup trials next week to top him off for the free-for-all on Cup Day,” he said.
(December 24) and the National Trot (December 31). After that we want to look at Australia, where the Great Southern Star at Melton will be his big aim.” But Purdon is thinking even further ahead, with plans for Oscar Bonavena to be staked for the best races in North America and head there for a long campaign. Just when and for how long isn’t set in stone and could depend on how he handles their racing style and Purdon says the fine details have yet to be worked out. “I’d love to give him his chance up there because I think he is good enough and the money is so big. “Whether we train him up there or Chris (Ryder, part owner) takes him over we will decide closer to time. So that is one of the reasons we are missing the Inters.” The thought of Oscar Bonavena performing to his best in the US would make local trotting fans salivate as he has the raw speed and stamina to go close to a 1:50 mile time under the right circumstances.

Summer league under way

King out of champs The run of Joelle King at the World Squash Championships has come to an end in the quarter-finals. King, ranked at No.6 in the world was defeated by second seed and defending champion, Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in a tough three game match on the glass court in front of the pyramids 11-7, 11-9, 13-11 in 38 minutes. It is the third time in a row King has reached the last eight of the world champs. The first two games were relatively straightforward with the Egyptian never relinquishing the lead, however the third game saw King with Kiwi men’s world No.5 Paul Coll acting as coach move her way back into the match. A controlling rally by King helped her go ahead 7-6, but once again Sherbini showed her racquet skills to take the match to 7-7. Eventually King had a game ball at 10-9 up and yet again Sherbini forced her way back in to the match to win the next three points and the match.

Liverpool takes shootout thriller AP After 19 goals on a wild night at Anfield – nine in a penalty shootout – Liverpool ousted Arsenal in the League Cup to reach the quarter-finals. Arsenal was moments away from advancing in regulation time until Divock Origi’s equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time made it 5-5. Then, only Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos missed his penalty, allowing teenager Curtis Jones to seal Liverpool’s progress with 5-4 shootout victory yesterday. There was less drama at Stamford Bridge but still a stunning winning goal. Marcus Rashford struck a free kick from 30 yards that dipped high into the net to clinch a 2-1 win for Manchester United against Chelsea after the striker’s first-half penalty had been cancelled out by Michy Batshuayi. Aston Villa also advanced after Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady scored in a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton. Holder Manchester City, Everton and Leicester joined lower-league sides Colchester and Oxford in reaching the quarter-finals on Wednesday. On only his third appearance of the season, Mesut Özil provided a reminder of his abilities as he had a hand in three of Arsenal’s goals. However, he was taken off just past the hour with Liverpool in the ascendancy having twice fought back from two-goal deficits to level at 4-4. The first goal of the night came after six minutes when Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi di-
verted the ball into his own net after coming under pressure from Rhian Brewster after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross came into the penalty area. Arsenal drew level in the 19th minute. Bukayo Saka’s shot from Ozil’s cutback was parried by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and Lucas Torreira netted while offside. But with no VAR used in the competition, the goal stood. Liverpool fell behind when Kelleher parried Sepp Van Den Berg’s deflection to Gabriel Martinelli who netted in the 26th. Martinelli, the Brazilian teenager, then made it 3-1 from another rebound 10 minutes later – taking his tally for the season to seven goals. The absence of video replays cost Liverpool again when Naby Keita’s shot hit the outstretched hand of Hector Bellerin. But from the resulting corner, Harvey Elliott was fouled by Martinelli and Milner netted from the penalty spot. Origi should have powered home a header before the break but the biggest surprise of the night was Milner leaving a backpass short 10 minutes into the second half. Maitland-Niles overran the ball but Ozil’s drag-back retrieved the ball close to the byline presenting his teammate with a simple goal to put Arsenal 4-2 in front. But after former Arsenal forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike from distance, Origi produced the first of Liverpool’s equalisers. He was required again deep into stoppage time with a volley, just when it seemed Joe Willock’s 70th-minute strike would be

But after scoring five in regulation time, Arsenal couldn’t repeat the feat. Liverpool did, the fifth netted by the 18-year-old Jones. “Being a local lad it’s always
been my dream to get an appearance at Anfield,” he said. “I was calm, I picked my spot and I was fortunate enough that the winning penalty went in. “The team played great, they
showed character and belief. With the shootout win, Liverpool remains in contention for every competition this season while sitting six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

No shortage of motivation for McIlroy AP

Already the FedEx Cup champion and PGA Tour player of the year, Rory McIlroy has found plenty of motivation toward the back end of the year. Most of it is geared toward reaping rewards next year. McIlroy is coming off a tie for third last week in Japan, a tournament he was never going to win after a bad start. He still managed his 17th top 10 of the year out of 23 tournaments worldwide, inching a little closer to Brooks Koepka at No. 1 in the world. “I don’t think I’ll get there by the end of the year,” McIlroy said at the HSBC Champions, the final World Golf Championships event of the year. “But if I play well the next few weeks, I’ll have a great platform going into next year.” He is the leading figure at Sheshan International, where the field is slightly weaker than years past because Koepka and Dustin Johnson, two regulars at the HSBC Champions, are home in Florida recovering from knee issues. Koepka will not play another official event the rest of the year. He withdrew from the CJ Cup in South Korea when his foot slipped on a piece of wet cement leaving a tee box and he planted hard with his left knee, which had received stem cell treatment during his offseason. McIlroy started the year at No. 8 and moved up to No. 2 through his three victories, including The Players Championship and Tour Championship, along with runner-up finishes in two World Golf Championships. “I’ve achieved most things that I’ve wanted to this year,” McIlroy said. “Just want to finish the year off strongly because I feel the year that I’ve had deserves a finish like that.” What he didn’t achieve was winning a major, making it five years since his last major title.

Coach praises captain as both international careers wind up All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has lauded captain Kieran Read as they both prepare for the final test matches of their career. The pair will both end their long and successful involvement with the New Zealand team after tonight’s bronze medal match against Wales at the Rugby World Cup. Hansen isn’t ready to talk about his own decorated career just yet, insisting after yesterday’s team naming those reflections would not come until after the third-place playoff. The two-time World Cup winner, though, was happy to let his feel-
ings known about what Read had achieved ahead of his 127th and last match for the All Blacks. “We identified early he’d be the next leader after Richie [McCaw]. “He’s a charasmatic leader. The boys love him, the management all love him and we have a huge amount of respect for him. “To come back from where he was with his back [injury], people won’t understand just how hard it was.” While not ready to reflect on his own time with the All Blacks, Hansen had no choice but to confirm at least a couple of details
about what he would be doing next. England coach Eddie Jones let slip after the two teams met in the semi-finals with the widely known, but not officially confirmed, news that his friend Hansen would be joining Japanese club Toyota. Asked what he was looking forward to about that move, Hansen had a laugh about Jones’ revelation. “I’m not actually coming to Japan to coach that team. “I’ve got another job with that team, which I’ll talk about another day, unless Eddie mentions it in his press conference again.” Meanwhile Hansen said they
were expecting a highly motivated Welsh side to turn up for the bronze medal match. The need for the game is questioned at every World Cup but the All Blacks coach believed Wales would have plenty to play for. “Their whole year will be forgotten if they win this game. “That’ll be like winning the World Cup perhaps, maybe not. “They’ve got plenty to play for, as do we, so it’ll be interesting to see what comes. “It’s the old ABC isn’t it. Assume some things, believe nothing until you confirm it.”

■■ RUNNING
A mission in Mt Somers By Erin Tasker
erin.t@theguardian.co.nz
When you run an event in the Mid Canterbury foothills in spring you never know what you’re going to be greeted by when it comes to the weather on race day. But when the fifth annual Mission Mt Somers trail running event gets under way tomorrow morning, sunscreen rather than thermals will be the number one must have for the more than 400 competitors. And that means race director Glen Currie should have a good night’s sleep tonight, knowing that everything is in place and the sun should be smiling down on racers when they set out tomorrow morning. It’s a very different feeling from the one he had before the event’s second running, where a southerly blew through and covered Mt Somers in snow. The race went ahead successfully and it made for some incredible pictures, which Currie said were probably the best advertising the event could have asked for, but it made for a rather stressful build up as an organiser. Mission Mt Somers is a big event to run. It’s made up of four races of varying length – the 42km full marathon, the 21km half marathon, a 10km and a 5km race. It caters to everyone from elite trail runners, through to families with young kids, and Currie said this year’s event is shaping up to be a winner once again. It’s attracted some big names in the past, like Scotty Walker, one of the world’s top five mountain runners. This year the big drawcards are likely to be a couple of Coast to Coast contenders in Sam Mansen
The enjoyment is written over this competitor’s face at last year’s Mission Mt Somers event, and it’s a look organisers are hoping to see a lot more of tomorrow. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN and Flavio Vianna, who will be fresh off an appearance at the Xterra World Championships. One of the best local hopes will again be past marathon winner Julia Grant, who hails from Methven but now lives and trains out of Christchurch, and races around the world. Many athletes use the Mission
Mt Somers event as part of their training for events like the Kepler Challenge on December 7, and February’s Coast to Coast, with the 21km half marathon the perfect training run for the Goat Pass run in the Coast to Coast, Currie said. And this weekend it should be just about the perfect training
run, in perfect conditions. A few days ago, Currie really wasn’t sure what the race day weather would be like, as winter returned to the foothills. Snow covered part of the track and memories of year two came flooding back. “A week ago we were in that situation, but at this stage it’s look-
ing like being in the high 20s,” Currie said. The first race to get under way tomorrow morning will be the marathon, at 7am. Racers will be shuttled to the Woolshed Creek car park to start that one, while the remaining races will start and finish at the Staveley Store.

Mass changes for both teams in ‘unwanted match’ New Zealand face Wales in the third and fourth Rugby World Cup playoff match at Tokyo Stadium tonight. Here’s all you need to know about the match. Tokyo Stadium will host the match between New Zealand and Wales – it’s a 40 minute train ride west of the city centre to the ground and it seats 49,970 people. Both teams have played at Tokyo Stadium during the Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks twice and Wales once. The All Blacks won both their matches there against Namibia in the pool stage and Ireland in the quarter-finals. Wales meanwhile played Australia in their first match of the tournament at Tokyo Stadium, walking away 29-25 victors. Englishman Wayne Barnes will officiate the match with Jaco Peyper (South Africa) and Pascal Gaüzère (France) his assistants.
The television match official is Marius Jonker of South Africa. Kickoff is 6pm local time, which is 10pm New Zealand time. The match will be shown live on Spark Sport, on a one hour delay on TVNZ1 and liveblogged by RNZ. Both teams have made a raft of changes for the match. For Wales a lot of it is due to injuries, while New Zealand’s team features a number of players pulling on the black jersey for the last time. In total, Steve Hansen made seven personnel changes to the starting XV that lost to England last week, while Scott Barrett has moved from blindside flanker to his usual lock position. The seven new faces in the XV are Dane Coles, Shannon Frizell, Sam Cane, Rieko Ioane, Sonny Bill Williams, Ryan Crotty and Ben Smith. The match will definitely be
Ben Smith, Ryan Crotty and Kieran Read’s last at the international level, while others like Williams and Coles are unlikely to play at another World Cup. It will be Kieran Read’s 127th test for New Zealand and his 52nd as captain. In total, Wales have made nine changes to their side with injuries forcing prop Tomas Francis, winger George North, flanker Aaron Wainwright and full-back Leigh Halfpenny to miss the match. Tonight marks the end of the eras of both Steve Hansen and Warren Gatland in a way neither coach wanted it to. Hansen is stepping down after 16 years with the side, eight as an assistant under Graham Henry and eight as head coach. Warren Gatland, meanwhile, is leaving the Wales job after 12 years in charge to take over his hometown Super Rugby franchise – the Chiefs.
1953 was the third and last time Wales beat New Zealand and Gatland says his side wants to change that tonight. “They (Wales players) are disappointed not to be in the final but have the chance to create a little bit of history against the All Blacks,” Gatland said. “It has been a long time, 66 years, not to beat a side. We have had success against every other nation. “There is definitely something at stake – a lot of pride – and a victory for us would be pretty special.” For Hansen, not being in the final has been a tough pill to swallow, but he still wants to leave the team with a winning feeling. “It’s an important test match for a number of reasons,” Hansen said. “One, we’ve just come off a loss. Two, it’s Wales and we’ve got a history with them that we need to keep feeding.
“We’ve got a legacy and a responsibility to that legacy.”

Another ASB coup NZME The ASB Classic team have confirmed a second Top 10 ATP player will be heading to Auckland in January next year with world number 8 Karen Khachanov returning. The 23-year old Russian has long been touted as one of the future stars on the ATP. With four ATP Tour titles to his name already, Khachanov will be returning to Auckland having appeared twice before. “I’ve enjoyed playing the ASB Classic before and I’m happy to be returning.
“I missed it last year when I would have liked to have played. “They have been very good to me from early in my career and I am really looking forward to coming back,” he said. “I have some great memories, my last match against Juan Martin in front of a full crowd at night was such a great atmosphere and I really hope I can do that again,” said Khachanov. Russian compatriot and current world number four Daniil Medvedev is expected to be the top seed at the tournament.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Your present will play out according to how you see your past. It’s never too late to change that story. Of course, the facts will remain, but what they mean to you can always change to better support you. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Suffering is caused by overidentifying with some part of your experience. This could come from clinging too tightly to a role or letting an activity define you. Try to see yourself as separate. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You have certain expectations of yourself. Love yourself whether or not you reach them. The more unconditional love you give, the more you’ll attract. And unconditional love is high-octane spiritual power. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Part of being proud of what you do is showing it in its best light. It’s worthwhile to put time, effort and money into the presentation because this helps others understand both the work and you. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People should know when they’re happy, but somehow they don’t always. That’s why it’s so important to notice it, point to it, talk about it, exclaim it, dance it, or just whisper it to yourself. Life is mighty fine. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It’s uncomfortable to know someone has given you more than they intended. Maybe they didn’t know it would take so long or cost so much. You would do the same in those circumstances, so relax. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When you give a recommendation and the other person doesn’t take it, does that feel like a slight? A disappointment? This is why you need to take your own advice. It’s a self-respect and self-love thing. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It does seem you have to unlearn in order to learn today, to clear before you can build, to change the water before you can clean, to drop your beef with someone before you can love. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Silence will be the social skill you’ll find most useful. It’s not that other people will think you’ve said too much; it’s just that you might, and your re-play could trigger unnecessary self-criticism. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): To force things is not only ineffective; it’s a bad look. Take a breath. To let the true value of a thing show itself to you, all you have to do is stand by and wait for it to emerge. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It’s tempting to go on as if nothing happened. However, even just a halfhour spent processing the past will make a world of difference. Think of it as a spiritual stretch to keep you limber and open to life. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People tend to ask the wrong questions because they want to be close to you and they’re not sure how. Decide what you’d like them to have asked and then answer that way regardless of what they really asked.

MELANIE INTO THE BIG TIME BLACK FERNS DEVELOPMENT SELECTORS NAME TEAM FOR FIJI New Zealand’s brightest up-andcoming women’s rugby talent has been named in a Black Ferns Development XV for the 2019 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship in Fiji next month, and will include a familiar Mid Canterbury face. Melanie Puckett is part of the 28-strong squad which includes 12 capped Black Ferns, players from the wider training squad and new faces. Waikato’s Farah Palmer Cup (FPC) Coach Wayne Maxwell has been appointed head coach and Canterbury FPC coach Kieran Kite named as assistant coach for the backs and Whitney Hansen
assistant coach for the forwards. Former Black Ferns lock Amanda Murphy will take up the strength and conditioning coach role. Murphy is currently the women’s rugby high performance manager for Canterbury Rugby. The Development XV will be managed by Counties Manukau Steelers’ manager Faamoana Leilua, and Gabrielle McCullough was appointed the squad’s physiotherapist. This will be the first time a Black Ferns Development XV side will take part in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship which includes Fiji, Samoa, Papua New
Melanie Puckett has been selected in the Black Ferns Development XV to play a number of games later this month. PHOTO SUPPLIED Guinea, Tonga and Australia A. The competition kicks off on November 18 at Churchill Park in Laukota, Fiji. New Zealand Rugby’s head of women’s rugby Cate Sexton said it is an important opportunity for up and coming players to gain valuable international experience and exposure to the Black Ferns environment. “As women’s rugby goes from strength to strength globally we need to make sure we are continuing to develop greater depth at the high performance level.
“To do this we need to give our top emerging talent opportunities to play other international sides,” she said. “The selected squad is a mix of capped Black Ferns who will build on their international experience, and players from FPC teams who we believe have the potential to step up to the next level.” “It’s really exciting for the players, but it also provides growth opportunities for the coaching and management team to build on their skills and experience.” Sexton said the 2019 Oceania
Rugby Women’s Championship provided an important pathway for women’s rugby in the Pacific with qualifying positions for 2021 Rugby World Cup available. “When we host the 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand we want as many nations as possible to be in a position to be able to send a team to take part. “While we want to build depth for our Black Ferns, it’s important to New Zealand Rugby that we support our Oceania neighbours to develop women’s rugby in their countries too,” she said.
