Twice lucky
A US man who won a multimillion-dollar jackpot playing the Florida Lotto has done it again. The Florida Lottery says 67-year-old James Bozeman Jr has claimed a $3 million jackpot from the drawing held on August 31, 2013. Last year, Bozeman claimed a $10 million jackpot. He purchased both winning tickets from the same convenience store. Bozeman says he started using a different set of numbers since the last time he won. He has chosen to receive his latest winning in annual payments of $100,000 for the next 30 years. – AP

Blackbeard’s cannons found Five large cannons from a sunken ship captained by the legendary pirate Blackbeard have been recovered by US archaeologists. The cannons were raised from the wreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, sunk off the coast of North Carolina, this week, state officials said. The cannons weighed between 900 and 1360kg. – AFP

Mexico honours skull artist Mexico’s elegant Skeleton Lady is getting a new lease on life about a century after she was created. Mexico City is marking the 100th anniversary of the death of the artist who first drew her, while US movie and rock stars use her as inspiration for Halloween costumes. Known as the Catrina, the figure of a skeleton wearing an elegant broad-brimmed hat was first done as a satirical engraving by artist Jose Guadalupe Posada somewhere between 1910 and his death on January 20, 1913. Mexico City is marking the centennial of Posada’s death by dedicating the giant Day of the Dead offering in the capital’s main plaza to the artist. In Mexico, such offerings traditionally consist of an altar with flowers, food and a photo of a departed loved one. – AP
Rehab for Brown Tempestuous US singer Chris Brown has checked into a California rehab facility two days after being charged over an altercation in Washington, according to a spokesman and reports. The 24-yearold, who is still on probation after infamously assaulting former girlfriend pop star Rihanna in 2009, could spend up to three months in the rehab clinic in Malibu, according to celebrity news website TMZ. “Chris Brown has elected to enter a rehab facility,” said a statement sent to AFP by a publicist. “His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behaviour, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point.” – AFP

New law forces school trip rethink By Myles HuMe

Mid Canterbury schools are having to rethink the way they transport pupils on field trips as new child restraint laws kick in today. It has one local principal believing more parents could be needed to drive children to events. Or schools may have to consider stumping up more money to use bus services. From today, mandatory use

of child restraints in vehicles will be extended by two years, meaning children will need to be in booster seats until their seventh birthday. Safekids NZ and the Automobile Association (AA) want it to go a step further and are advocating for children to sit in a booster seat until they exceed 148cm in height. The law change has been in the sights of Mid Canterbury schools for months, who are advising parents they will need to supply booster seats for pupils
under seven on school trips. Many are supportive of the move to improve child safety, but it may cause headaches when it comes to school trips or escorting youngsters to sporting events in parents’ cars. “We’ve got to work within the law,” Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Longbeach School principal Neil Simons said. “However, it may affect school trips, the seating arrangement and trying to fit three car seats across the back of the car are
two different things and it may change the numbers we can get in the car. Soon we may even have to have a harder look at buses.” Mr Simons said schools already had strict guidelines in place for parents to take pupils on school trips, and adding the new booster seat law would become a part of the requirements. Publicity around the law change has been a high priority for local schools, with newsletters informing parents of the
booster seat requirement. Wakanui School, among others, has told its parents they must supply booster seats for pupils under seven and for those that are also under 148cm tall as it takes on board calls from Safekids NZ. Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said schools “would have to rethink their approach”, but believed schools would not need to purchase more booster seats in the case of a pupil not being supplied one for a trip.

By Teuila FuaTai Canterbury University will receive $260 million from the Government to support its rebuild programme. The funding boost was announced yesterday by Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce. “The Government’s contribution will fund a new science centre and expanded and upgraded engineering facilities. These will provide modern teaching and research facilities and cater for more students,” he said. “The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes have had a major impact on the university, with all of its buildings and facilities affected. As a result of the earthquakes, student numbers were down 15 per cent in 2012 compared to the previous three-year average.” Canterbury University would find it difficult to recover without the funding support, Mr Joyce said. A campus-wide redevelopment programme, which would provide “modern, world-leading facilities” was expected to cost $1.1 billion over 10 years. “The work programme will be a major contributor to the Canterbury recovery, and will be one of the largest building projects in New Zealand,” Mr Joyce said. “The university estimates that it will spend approximately $4 billion in capital and operating expenditure in the local economy over the next 10 years.” Mr Joyce’s funding announcement follows the recent approval of an $18.9 million capital injection for the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. - APNZ

Head pupil selection ‘a tough decision’ By Myles HuMe

An aspiring sporting star and a pupil with all-round ability are set to take over the reins of Mount Hutt College in 2014. Principal John Schreurs admits it was a tough decision to find his head boy and head girl for next year after a long list of strong candidates, but he is confident newly announced leaders Kenji Boekholt and Ella McKendry, both 17, will be up for the job.
The duo were told this week they will lead the college after a thorough interviewing process, and will be supported by Markus Body and Sukey Allen, both 16, who have been given the deputy roles. Speaking yesterday, Kenji, a competitive skier with interests in swimming, athletics and cross country, said it was still hard to believe he will be a key figure in the running of the college next year. But he was keen to take advantage of the rare chance.
“I want to make sure there are more opportunities available here and develop the opportunities we already have, particularly in sporting and cultural activities. There are so many talented people at this school who haven’t even blossomed yet,” the former Methven Primary pupil said. A keen netball and tennis player, Ella is also a top academic pupil who grew up on a Methven farm and attended Our Lady of The Snows until Year 8.
She said it was too early to know her exact plans for the college next year, but she was keen to talk to fellow pupils to find out what they wanted. “To be honest, I’m just still trying to get used to the idea of being head girl next year, but I’ll definitely be talking to people to see what ideas they have.” The duo and their deputies take over from this year’s head boy Alex Holmes, head girl Rebecca Robinson, deputy head boy Connor McKinnon and deputy head girl Megan Fitzgerald.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the 136th annual Ashburton A&P Show – numbers that prove A&P shows are still as popular as ever, organisers say. The two-day show gets under way at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds today and the as-

We have some craft sites and that’s great because it helps to cater for a wider cross section of the community, but we want to keep it rural,” Mr Bennett said. The Mid Canterbury community and businesses always got behind its show and while it was hard to say exactly how many
people turned out each year, historically around 3000 ticket buying adults went through the gates. On top of that there’s complimentary ticket holders and children – who get in for free. Good weather is vital to the show’s success and Ashburton’s committee is hoping for better luck than its Rangiora counterparts who had major issues
due to last weekend’s blustery winds. Although Mr Bennett said it was bad luck to talk about the weather the day before the show, it was great the once poor forecast had changed for the better. While there may be some early rain today, the skies are expected to clear and remain that way until tomorrow evening, when drizzle is possible.

Capturing essence of farming life This year’s Ashburton A&P Show theme is Farming Friends – Family, Community and Business. It’s a broad theme but Mr Bennett said it captured the essence of life as a farmer, and also incorporated one of big highlights of this year’s show – the trans-Tasman dog trial test. The trial test will get under way at 2pm today and again at 3pm tomorrow. “It has been in Ashburton before but we’ve got it back here again and we have a new arena
up by D&E’s where they are going to be run,” Mr Bennett said. Carrying on the dog theme, there will be a display and demonstrations by a dog obedience club, while there will be the usual animals galore thanks to Young Farmers in the ITM shed. This year that includes miniature pony rides for what is believed to be the first time. As usual, the trade sites were “full to overflowing”, Mr Bennett said. The grandstand at the
grounds has been strengthened following earthquake damage, just in time for the show. Another show highlight, the grand parade will be led off by the South Canterbury Pipe Band at 2pm on Saturday. Tomorrow is also the day where the animals will come along to be judged, and the entries in the home industries pavilion are as strong as ever. All the regular sideshows and rides are back again, and when hunger finally gets you there’s plenty of food and drink available.

‘I’ll be doing this till I fall off my perch’ By Sue NewmaN
Dad had a building business but I didn’t really like it, not working for my dad and then doing this at weekends. “I’ll be doing this till I fall off my perch.” When it was his turn to take over the sideshow, Wayno decided to start a trucking business in his home town of Motueka as his second income stream. His son runs that while dad hits the road for most of the summer. Running a sideshow is no easy ride, however. Getting the right staff to man the stalls is a tough job. “I get the ones who can’t find jobs anywhere else, but they do the job. “I have to drive the ferris wheel because no one else wants to do it. “You have to have eyes in the back of your head because kids will always do something unexpected.” He sleeps in the back of his truck, but when you work hard, you can sleep anywhere Wayno said.

They’re known as the bad boys of the show circuit, the ones you wouldn’t take home to meet your mum, but what would an A&P show be without the Carnies? The boys who run sideshow alley have had plenty of bad press over the years and if you ask Wayno (Wayne Sturgeon), he’ll say some of them have deserved it. But not his team. He prides his business on being an up-market sideshow. He repaints his gear every winter and spends the chilly months carefully maintaining every cog, wheel and engine. “If you have it nice you get them coming back. It takes a long time to build up a good name and just a couple of minutes to get a bad one.” Wayno is proud of his set up. He’s the third generation of his family on the show circuit and has his son well schooled in the trade. His granddad started the

Handpicked from across Australia, the four men and four dogs arrived in the country on Wednesday, and flew in specifically to represent their country at the Ashburton show. said that they were looking forward to competing, and always enjoyed the strong rivalry between the countries. Getting the dogs into New Zealand was one of the challenges of the trip, as they had to get through Customs and have to get several injections, but many of the dogs were seasoned travellers and more comfortable with flying than their masters. Although they are seasoned competitors it will be the first time in Ashburton for most of the men and all of the dogs, and they spent most of the day yesterday exploring the district. Coming from 39 degree heat in Australia, Mr Curtis said that, initial impressions of Ashburton was that it was strikingly green. The trans-Tasman dog trials will run from 2pm today and from 3pm tomorrow at the Ashburton A&P show.

One of the better crops of asparagus in recent seasons is currently being picked on the outskirts of Tinwald. Helen and John Cunliffe and their team of pickers are into week two of a six-week asparagus harvesting season at their Wilkins Road property. Mrs Cunliffe said asparagus liked heat and a good sandy soil and this year the conditions had proven ideal, despite the recent string of strong winds. Rain forecast this weekend won’t be bad for it either. “It could do with a drink. It saves me putting the irrigator on it,” Mrs Cunliffe said. Growing asparagus is not a quick job; this year’s crop was planted three years ago and will continue producing for the next 10 years. Mr Cunliffe’s parents started growing asparagus at the property in 1973 and the Cunliffe name will continue to be synonymous with asparagus in Mid

Hakatere hui The Hakatere Marae wants to have a funded co-ordinator appointed to deal with the increasing number of visitors and events held at the marae. A hui is being held tomorrow where the employment of a co-ordinator will be discussed, to co-ordinate current activities and work towards developing health, welfare and education services. A strong turnout is needed to ensure this project is successful as the workshop facilitators will be the people who will help with funding this position. The hui starts at 9am and those attending are asked to bring a plate.
Injured driver dies An elderly Christchurch man has died following a road crash in the city last week. Police said 82-yearold Northwood resident John Palmer Allan died at Christchurch Hospital yesterday. He was critically injured in the crash. A $500,000 fundraising campaign has been launched to ensure Ashburton’s new art gallery and museum opens fully kitted out and ready for business. The campaign is a joint venture between the Ashburton Museum and Ashburton Art Gallery who are working together with the Ashburton District Council to raise funds for a range of fixtures, fittings and furniture for the new complex. The fundraising campaign has been titled Inside the Box and is being driven by a committee with representatives from all three organisations. Fundraising for fixtures and fittings had always been a given, said council representative Don McLeod. “The council budgeted $450,000 from the outset as its contribution to fixtures and fittings but we didn’t know exactly what would be needed to close the gap.” That gap is estimated to be up to $500,000 wide, but already $200,000 of this has been found as part of a $700,000 grant received earlier this year from Lotteries New Zealand. The fundraising committee would be applying for grants from several trusts but knew it would also need to go to the public for some of the money needed, Mr McLeod said. “The public part of this shouldn’t be
too heavy; it’s to cap it off and to make sure we have everything we need to open a state of the art facility from day one. We’re confident we can get the community on board with this campaign.” Lighting had been one issue identified by the art gallery team but there was a wide range of items needed from shelving and display plinths to tables and chairs for the education centre, Mr McLeod said. The fundraising campign will be led by Kevin Soster as “funding champion” for the campaign. The Inside the Box campaign starts this weekend with a stand at the Ashburton A&P Show. This would be an opportunity to introduce the project to a wider audience and to answer questions people may have about the new Art Gallery and Heritage Centre. “This project has attracted an extraordinary amount of misinformation and this weekend will give us the opportunity to provide residents with some facts and show just what the new facility will deliver,” he said. Next Friday night the Ashburton Art Gallery is hosting a Light the Art event at the Ashburton Art Gallery to raise funds for the lighting required in the new gallery. Donations to the Inside the Box campaign can made at Heartland Bank, the Ashburton Museum or the Ashburton Art Gallery.
Man killed in three-car crash An 18-year-old man has died following a three-car crash in Wellington. Police, who were called to the accident on Haywards Hill Road, Upper Hutt at 4.40pm yesterday, confirmed the man passed away at Wellington Hospital last evening. Police central communications shift inspector Mike Coleman believed the 18-year-old had been driving one of the cars involved. “He was from the Eastbourne area,” Mr Coleman said. Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman Daniel Paul said the man had been
taken to Wellington Hospital by helicopter. A woman had also received moderate chest injuries and was taken by ambulance to Hutt Valley Hospital, Mr Paul said. Mr Coleman said the serious crash unit were investigating the accident. Three cars had been towed from the road. At the time of the crash, it had been raining, Mr Coleman said. It was not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, or whether those involved had been wearing seatbelts. - APNZ

For four people who were part of the last term of the Ashburton District Council, Wednesday was a day of final farewells. As the new council met for the first time and mayor Angus McKay and his team of 12 councillors made declarations to serve the district to the best of their ability for the next three years, councillors from the last term were farewelled. After a local body career spanning 27 years, John Leadley exercised his official speaking rights in the council chamber for the last time. Deputy mayor Darryl Nelson paid tribute to Mr Leadley’s contribution to the district and said it had been an honour for other councillors to have worked with him. “John is not retiring, he’s just moving on,” Mr Nelson said. Mr Leadley served his first local body terms with the Ashburton County Council and was then a member of the newly amalgamated Ashburton District Council for its first, 18 member term. During his time with the council he has served under three chief executives and four mayors. For almost half of his 50 years of married life, Mr Leadley said his wife Lyn had also been part of council, often being the person who answered
the home phone and bore the brunt of complaints from upset ratepayers. “It’s time now for me to call a halt to this and I want to say, good on you to the new councillors for putting your hands up and putting your names up for what you consider the good of the district.” When the newly appointed environmental services chair Alan Totty farewelled Jim Burgess he described him as ‘gentleman Jim’, a man who was always polite and always showed consideration for others. “And he was always the councillor who would say, ‘don’t you dare forget the low income ratepayers when you’re setting rates’,” Mr Totty said. Councillor Don McLeod described Jac Sparks, who missed out on re-election, as a multitalented individual who was “passionate about a whole heap of things”, particularly arts and the environment. Her passion for the district’s new art gallery and historical centre, however, may have been what cost her, her seat around the council table, Mr McLeod said. “She’s given her time to being the best councillor she could be; if all of us can say that when we leave here, we’ll be in good company.” Retiring long serving councillor Robin Kilworth was not at the council meeting.

Lambs butchered The discovery of the butchered carcasses of 23 lambs has prompted a warning for farmers. The carcasses were found in Kaituna, west of Masterton, after a night raid on a local farm. Twentythree lambs, worth about $2500, were stolen from paddocks last Wednesday. Frustrated farmer Richard Chamberlain said it was the third time he had been robbed of stock in the past year. - APNZ

Grieving mother acquitted A grieving mother is pleading with parents to never leave their young children alone in water after her son drowned when he was left by himself in a bath. The 13-month-old infant was found face down in the water by his mother when she returned after spending nearly eight minutes away from the bathroom. The 29-year-old, who cannot be named, was charged with her son’s manslaughter but yesterday was acquitted after only two hours of deliberation by a jury in the High Court at Wellington. Commenting on the case, Auckland barrister and criminal defence specialist Steve Bonnar said the Crown could have pursued a lesser charge of “criminal nuisance”. “That is an offence where someone fails to comply with a legal duty, and their failure to comply is one that they know could endanger the life of a person.” - APNZ
An 18-year-old is likely to face charges under the Animal Welfare Act over a cat being shot in the head with a cross bow bolt, police say. Wellington police spokesman Nick Bohm said the teen handed himself in over the incident, which saw Wainuiomata cat Moomoo needing surgery at the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital last week. The bolt had gone in above the 4-year-old cat’s left eye and emerged behind the ear. - APNZ
Not missing The search for a missing French tramper cost police thousands of dollars, West Coast area commander Inspector John Canning said. A rescue operation was launched after 32-year-old Yohan Simon failed to rendezvous with a friend the following Monday. Mr Canning said today that police had received a positive sighting of the man, who is believed to still be in the Karamea area, “however he has failed to let anyone know he is safe”. - APNZ
Reluctant hero A teenager is shrugging off the title of hero after he saved the life of an elderly whitebaiter who fell into a coma and slipped into the river last week. Len Booth of Temuka was whitebaiting at the Hokitika River boat ramp when he fell into a diabetic coma and ended up face down in the water. Fortunately 13-year-old Cade McInnes saw what had happened. “My instincts took over and I ran down and pulled his head out of the water. I wasn’t scared. I just wanted to help him.” Cade kept the man’s head above water and managed to call for help, - APNZ

In brief Detention on Facebook A pro-democracy blogger broke the news of his own detention and eventual release in Vietnam through Facebook, another sign of how the social network is shaking up the country’s activist movement and worrying its authoritarian rulers. In a video message posted by activists soon after his detention at Hanoi airport Wednesday night, Nguyen Lan Thang said, “When you see this video, it’s certain that I have been arrested by security forces.” Yesterday afternoon, Thang said he been released, also via Facebook. “Too much taxpayer’s money has been spent on me since yesterday,” he wrote in reference to his detention. “My apologies to all of you.” - AP

Arms equipment destroyed An official at the global chemical weapons watchdog said yesterday Syria has completed destruction of critical equipment for producing chemical weapons and filling munitions with poison gas. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had not yet made the announcement public. The announcement comes one day ahead of the November
1 deadline set by the Haguebased organisation for Damascus to destroy or “render inoperable” all chemical weapon production facilities and machinery for mixing chemicals into poison gas and filling munitions. Destruction of the equipment means that Syria can no longer produce new chemical weapons. However Damascus still has to start destroying existing weapons and stockpiles. The country is believed to
have around 1000 metric tons of chemicals and weapons including mustard gas and the nerve agent sarin. Completion of the initial stage of destruction, overseen by a joint United Nations-OPCW team in Syria, is a significant milestone in an ambitious timeline that aims to destroy all of Damascus’ chemical weapons by mid-2014. Inspectors said earlier this week they had completed their first round of verification work,
visiting 21 of 23 sites declared by Damascus. Inspectors were unable to visit two sites because of security concerns, underscoring the risky nature of a mission to destroy Syria’s chemical arsenal in the midst of an ongoing civil war. Syria has submitted a plan for the total destruction of its chemical weapons that has to be approved next month by the OPCW’s executive committee. - AP

Khmer Rouge defendants deny charges The last two surviving leaders of Cambodia’s radical Khmer Rouge regime still on trial for genocide and other war crimes issued their final defence yesterday, distancing themselves from the deaths of more than 1.7 million people who died during their rule. Former head of state Khieu Samphan, 87, and 82-year-old Nuon Chea, the Khmer Rouge’s chief ideologist and No. 2 leader, both made lengthy closing statements at the UN-backed tribunal in the capital, Phnom Penh. A verdict is not expected in the case until the first half of next year, more than two years after the trial began.
Shortly after seizing Phnom Penh in April 1975, the Khmer Rouge forced an estimated 1 million people — even hospital patients — out of the capital, herding them en masse into the countryside in an effort to create a communist agrarian utopia. By the time the bizarre experiment ended in 1979 with a Vietnamese invasion, close to 2 million people were dead, most from starvation, medical neglect, slave-like working conditions and execution. Their bodies were dumped in shallow mass graves that still dot the country today. “It is easy to say that I should have known everything, I
should have understood everything, and thus I could have intervened or rectified the situation at the time,” Khieu Samphan defiantly told the court. “Do you really think that that was what I wanted to happen to my people?” “The reality was that I did not have any power,” he said. Nuon Chea also defended his actions, saying he never ordered Khmer Rouge cadres “to mistreat or kill people to deprive them of food or commit any genocide.” Unlike Khieu Samphan, however, Nuon Chea accepted “moral responsibility” for the deaths, repeating previous efforts to distance himself from actual
crimes. “I would like to sincerely apologise to the public, the victims, the families, and all Cambodian people,” said the frail former leader, speaking steadily as he read from pages of notes. “I wish to show my remorse and pray for the lost souls that occurred by any means” during the Khmer Rouge rule. Nuon Chea’s words are unlikely to be any consolation for survivors, hundreds of whom crowded the courtroom and the tribunal’s grounds. “He is just trying to cheat the court so that he can be freed,” said Bin Siv Lang, a 56-year-old woman who lost 11 relatives during the Khmer Rouge rule. - AP
Fired up over sauce A Southern California factory town’s attempt to shut down production of the popular Sriracha chili sauce is heading to court. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge was expected to decide whether to grant the city of Irwindale’s request to cease operations at the Huy Fong Foods factory until the company can reduce the pungent smell of pepper and garlic fumes emanating from the plant. The sprawling factory processes some 100 million pounds of peppers a year into Sriracha and two other popular Asian food sauces. - AP
Israeli city divided After a contentious mayoral election between secular and ultraOrthodox rivals, the city of Beit Shemesh has become a flashpoint for a religious struggle that is threatening to tear Israel apart. ovember 1 is a big date. For most in Mid Canterbury this day has been synonymous with the start of the 2013 A&P Show. Today the annual event will kick off in style with dog trials, horse events and judging of all kinds of lifestock. Tomorrow is traditionally the big day when the working folk of Mid Canterbury head down to the showgrounds to check out new farming gear or simply enjoy the food and the rides. The weather is supposed to a bit iffy today, but we can only hope that the Metservice experts get it wrong for a change. If all else fails, at least they have predicted a sunny Saturday which will please the big crowds expected to watch the animals and other entertainment. In all this show excitement, we can’t forget that today is also the start of Movember when good keen blokes decide to grow their facial hair to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues. Last year the global event raised over $176 million dollars and 1.2 million men signed up to leave the razor alone for 30 days. Aside from the money, raising awareness around prostate cancer, cholesterol and other dangers to men’s health are invaluable. This is especially the case in rural areas like Mid Canterbury where the men are proud of their staunch and bulletproof image, and where they only call a doctor when they cut off a few fingers. Sadly, the physical injuries from doing tough work are not killing these men. The invisible dangers of cancer, heart disease and depression are much bigger threats. Early detection can avoid much pain and anguish and encouraging other men to take their physical and mental health seriously is a good starting point. And why not start at the A&P Show where so many rural folk down tools, and take time for a beer and a chat with their peers while kicking a few tractor tyres and showing off their prized stock. port has certainly changed in Mid Canterbury especially over the past 20 years and I think that makes the Hammers’ Meads Cup achievement all the more impressive. If I’d said to any local rugby supporter 20 years ago that Allenton or Tinwald wouldn’t have a senior team in two decades, they would have suggested I was a few sandwiches short of a picnic. The same goes for cricket, who would have thought we’d have a senior comp with no Fairfield, Star or Old Boys? So what’s happened? Why are we struggling for numbers in local sport? I guess there’s a whole host of answers and theories. I think one of the issues is technology. I’m talking PlayStations, Xboxes, iPods, iPads, computers and even the good old telly. I know from personal experience that my two kids would happily sit for hours playing on the iPod IF I LET THEM. The same goes for the TV, especially Josh my 13-year-old son, who Tuesday night walked backwards out of the lounge to have a shower, so he could watch telly to the very last second! We were discussing this very issue at squash this week over a beverage or two (just one of the world’s problems we sorted out on the night) and one of the lads there has implemented a “No TV for an hour after school” policy at his place. He says it works very well and after a while the kids actually forget about telly, BUT one slip up and they’re straight into their television transfixion. Kids in Mid Canterbury have
more choices in sport these days. I’m thinking of water sports at Lake Hood and the likes of mountain biking the river track. The closest I got to mountain biking as a young fella was taking my Chopper down the death drops. Thrillseeking rather than sport I’d suggest. Add the increased rate of divorce into the mix as well. Once again, speaking from experience, I play very little Saturday golf because I have my kids every other weekend and I’m not going to give up time with them to spend the afternoon playing golf. I’m picking the biggest issue with lack of numbers in local sport are the changes to the working week over the past 20 years and how many people are working in the weekends these days. I guess there’s not a lot we can do about that, but I’m picking there hasn’t been too many deathbed wishes along the lines of “I wish I’d worked more hours”. Whatever the reason for lack of numbers in local sport it’s great to see the Mid Canterbury side win the Meads Cup final. From talking to some of the boys, it sounds like a happy unit and well coached by both Glenn Moore and Grant Keenan. A team with confidence in each other, playing for each other and proudly playing for their province. So parents, if you can, keep encouraging your kids to play sport, even if they’re not really into it, you never know. I saw a road-side sign in Greymouth two weeks ago that I liked: “Kids in sport stay out of court.” Till next week, Hoo Roo.

NZ economy in ‘sweet spot’ By Brian Fallow Confidence remains very buoyant in the ANZ’s monthly Business Outlook survey, a net 53 per cent of firms expecting the general business situation to improve in the year ahead. While marginally lower than the 54 per cent recorded in September, when the mild seasonal element is adjusted for it means confidence is at the highest level since July 1994, says ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie. Firms are also confident about their own prospects, a net 47 per cent expecting a lift in activity,
the most since October 1994. Employment and investment intentions were at a net 19 per cent positive, he said, and export intentions were creeping back up, rising four points to a net 27 per cent expecting an increase. It was pretty impressive considering the rise in the exchange rate over the month. Building consents in the under-supplied Auckland market remain “worryingly subdued”, particularly compared to the booming Canterbury region, says Westpac Institutional Bank senior economist Michael Gordon. The pace of Auckland consents had slowed markedly in the last few months and he wasn’t the only economist raising concerns. Statistics NZ yesterday rseleased latest data which showed Canterbury building at record levels. Christina Leung, ASB economist, said dwelling consent issuance for the year to September totalled just over 5600 in Auckland, well below the 13,000 of new houses the Auckland Council has estimated would be required annually to keep up with population growth in coming years. Auckland and Canterbury were expected to drive construction growth in the near future. “However, there are signs that house-building demand is slowing in Auckland,” Leung said, citing comments from building industry bosses about the restrictions on high loanto-value-ratio lending which took effect from October 1. The September figures predate the Reserve Bank’s LVR moves.
OCR rise delay? Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler has signalled he might push back the start of increases in the official cash rate if the New Zealand dollar stays high. Otherwise the bank’s review of the OCR yesterday, which left the rate unchanged at its all-time low of 2.5 per cent, was an almost verbatim repeat of the previous one in September. The key guidance paragraph continues to say that OCR increases are likely to be required next year but how much and when “will largely depend on the degree to which the momentum in the housing market and construction sector spills over into broader demand and inflation pressures”. - NZH

Singaporean interests have got consent to buy 23,471ha of rural South Island farmland in seven sheep stations. The Overseas Investment Office approved Duxton Asset Management’s purchase of 50 per cent of the shares in New Zealand Pastures which will indirectly own or control a freehold interest in the land. The price was withheld as confidential but the vendors are the existing shareholders in New Zealand Pastures, 100 per cent New Zealand owned. The stations are Three Rivers, Grantham Springs, Hitchin Hills, Quailburn, Hills Creek, the Styx and Huntleigh. - NZH
Westland Milk record Despite challenging dairying conditions, Westland Milk Products has reported a solid end of year result, including celebrating a record milk supply. The Hokitikabased company released its annual report yesterday, reporting a group profit of $12.9 million after tax; up from $3.6 million last year. Westland’s subsidiary Easi Yo also had a record year, with a turnover of $45m. The factory took in 689 million litres of milk, which was converted into 108,000 tonnes of product for sale, generating revenues of $535m. - GRS
Ngai Tahu good savers Young people from Ngai Tahu are more likely to be saving for retirement and are more wary of debt than other Kiwis their age, a study has found. The reason appears to be a savings scheme started by the iwi seven years ago - one year ahead of KiwiSaver’s launch. As part of a two-decade study, the Financial Education and Research Centre has surveyed 300 New Zealanders aged between 18 and 22-years old. The study found some key similarities existed between Ngai Tahu and other young people, such as a reliance on parents for money advice. Whai Rawa is a medium to long-term savings scheme aimed at building the wealth of Ngai Tahu. - HOL

UFB customers ‘need incentive’ BY HAMISH FLETCHER A “carrot” rather than a stick should be used to encourage people to move to ultra-fast broadband and keeping slower internet prices higher is the wrong way to get them to switch, says a research and public policy firm. Infrastructure firm Chorus says if prices on its older copper internet network are set too low, it could harm uptake to the new ultra-fast broadband (UFB) network it is building. The argument is that if copper prices are too low relative to fibre there is less incentive for customers to move to the faster services. The NZX-listed firm voiced these concerns when the Commerce Commission released a draft ruling last December that would cut wholesale copper internet prices by more than 25 per cent if finalised. The Government, which is loaning $929 million to Chorus for the UFB build, has since proposed to intervene in the market and set wholesale copper prices that are higher than in the regulator’s draft decision. The copper prices suggested in this intervention are equivalent to entry-level fibre prices on the UFB network. Chorus supports this intervention and included the views of former Telecommunications Commissioner Ross Patterson in a submission about it to the Government. Patterson said setting copper and fibre prices on par would encourage consumers to move to fibre. “If you encourage someone to build a wonderful network and then there’s no incentive for customers to use it because it’s priced so high com-
pared to other services you’ve achieved nothing,” Patterson said. Research and public policy consultancy firm Covec said it acknowledges higher copper prices relative to fibre would tilt the market towards UFB. But the Auckland-based company said making fibre better rather than making copper worse was the preferable approach to encourage people to move to the new service. Vodafone made a similar point in its submission to the Government against intervention. “To encourage switching from copper to fibre without reducing consumer welfare, a ‘carrot’ is required. “The way to do that is by improving the UFB service so that it is more attractive to customers,” Covec said in a report that was prepared for some opponents to the proposed intervention. One of its suggestions was to improve the entry-level speeds being offered over the UFB, something Chorus has since proposed to do. Covec said making sure there were no barriers to selling digital premium content - such as newly released movies or live sports - was another way fibre could be improved. Communications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams said she believed speed and the quality of service would be what attracted consumers to fibre. But she had concerns on whether pricing issues meant retailers had more than of an incentive to keep consumers on the older network. “My view is that consumers offered a choice, as they see the advantages of fibre, will take up fibre not based on price.
Google, Yahoo spied on The National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centres around the world, the Washington Post reported yesterday, citing documents obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. A secret accounting dated January 9, 2013, indicates that NSA sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency’s Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters. In the last 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent back more than 180 million new records ranging from “metadata,” which would indicate who sent or received emails and when, to content such as text, audio and video, the Post reported on its website. - AP

If copper prices are too low relative to fibre, there is less incentive for customers to move to the faster services.
“But my concern is that they may not get that option if the incentives and rewards for retail providers are much more around continuing to keep people on copper,” Adams said. A government discussion document on the proposed intervention also said if retailers are discouraged from offering fibre, that will in turn reduce the services and applications that become available over the fibre network and provide a further disincentive for people to migrate. But Slingshot and CallPlus boss Mark Callander said internet retailers would have to offer fibre services if they wanted to remain competitive and keep customers. The Government has also said that a price gap between copper and fibre would have specific consequences for Chorus.
“As the owner of the copper network, Chorus will be directly affected by both lower copper revenue and slower migration to fibre, which will then affect its ability to fund the roll-out of fibre in the areas where it is contracted to do so,” the discussion document said. However, Prime Minister John Key took this argument a step further. “Basically if the Commerce Commission ruling stands there’s a chance Chorus will go broke, in which case the ultra fast broadband won’t be rolled out,” he told TVNZ last month. But opponents to intervention say there is no evidence that Chorus is at risk of insolvency and therefore claim those are not appropriate grounds for the Government to overrule the regulator. - NZH
Facebook has posted a 60 per cent revenue increase in the third quarter thanks to mobile advertising growth. The numbers beat Wall Street’s expectations for the second consecutive quarter. The world’s largest social network said yesterday that it earned $US425 million, or 17 cents per share, in the July-September period. That’s up from a loss of $59 million, or 2 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Adjusted earnings were $621 million, or 25 cents per share, in the latest quarter. That’s 6 cents better than analysts expected. Revenue grew 60 per cent to $2.02 billion from $1.26 billion, helped by increasing mobile advertising revenue. - AP

A year or so later and Microsoft have taken a lot of the criticisms that were aimed at the original Surface RT on-board to refine the Surface 2 so it is now marginally thinner and lighter with a sharper display plus a faster and more powerful Tegra 4 CPU. In brief Tennis After a week off Mid Canterbury open A grade tennis resumes with round three at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre tomorrow. Hampstead come off a two-week layoff following a bye in week two to take on Tinwald, beaten 5-1 by Hinds a fortnight ago. Hinds have a hit-out with Dorie, the two sides sitting on top of the table after one completed round. Rhys Cromie is coming off his first loss in several seasons, but his side still registered a 5-1 win over Allenton. Allenton are on the bye. In A reserve Allenton is emerging as the team to beat after consecutive 6-0 wins, but should face a stiff challenge from Hampstead Blue. The Hampstead Ferns are also two-from-two and look for a third straight win against Methven, while the early season strugglers get a chance at a win when the Foothill Flyers face Rakaia.

Ashburton’s Madison Crowe and her mount Brogan will contest the National One Day Event Championships this weekend at the National Equestrian Centre McLeans Island in Christchurch this weekend. Crowe is among some of the best horse and rider combinations from around the country set to battle it out for top honours and although New Zealand eventing’s elite will not compete with so many of the top combinations currently overseas, the competition be tough. Crowe will contest the CIC2*
for the Waiteko Trophy where North Islanders dominate the small but quality field. Matangi’s Samantha Felton on the impressive duo, Henton After Dark and Ricker Ridge Escada, who currently leads the Pro-Am series, looks the one beat. She is joined by fellow northerner’s Virginia Thompson (Auckland) on Star Nouveau, Sophie Wilkinson (Kaukapakapa) on Little Miss Pete, and Laurie Currie (Lower Hutt) on Wishful Thinking. Promising young rider Ellie Braddock (Rangiora) leads the South Island’s hopes on Miss
Matilda, backing up from success at McLeans Island in the CNC2* on October 13. Also starting is Outram’s Lauren Enright on Tokyo Road and former Ashburton rider Larissa Srhoy, now based out of Loburn, on Smirnoff. A strong field of 21 will contest the CIC1* for the Ferndale Salver Trophy, while 22 competitors are down to compete in the CNC105 for the Tait Trophy and injury has taken its toll on the CIC3* reducing it to just four starters. Entries in the CNC95 and CNC80 have been boosted by the event also acting as the first area trial for Canter-
bury riders vying for their place in the New Zealand Pony Club Association (NZPCA) Horse Trials Championships next year. Action gets under way tomorrow with the dressage scheduled to get started at 8am followed by the show jumping phase at 1pm. The all-important cross country is being held on Sunday, with the first horses out on course from 8.30am. It is the first time the National One Day Event Championships have been held in the South Island, since it was hosted by the Ashburton Area at Surrey Hills in the mid-1990s.
Another day in the dirt has rolled around and two more titles go on the line at the Ashburton Speedway on Sunday. This time around the Production and Stock Cars have their Mid Canterbury championship titles on the line over three races, while the other grades vie for crucial points towards their season tallies. It’s a low key meeting before next month’s big event, hosting the final round of the DHL Saloon Speedweek with a special evening race meet on Saturday December 14.

Moves are under way to further cement Horse of the Year’s reputation as the premier equestrian event in Australasia, with its first naming rights sponsor in three years confirmed. Additionally, its show envoys are also building relationships in China and its new board is currently in Auckland finalising its long term strategy. Long-time equine supporter NRM is the new naming rights sponsor for the Hastings-based Horse of the Year (HOY) event - its first naming rights sponsor in three years, since the demise of Kelt Capital. NRM has supplied bulk and bagged feed for farm animals for more than 120 years and is the largest feed manufacturer in New Zealand. HOY operations manager Andrew Hansen said NRM recognised the show was “growing to another level”. - HBT

Ashburton cyclist Hayden Roulston (right) will not line up in the 2013 Tour of Southland, with no Mid Canterbury rider in the 145 strong field to race in New Zealand’s premier road cycling event starting on Sunday. Roulston, a four-time winner from 11 tours, will be absent from the start line choosing to end his 2013 season riding at the Tour of Beijing last month. Roulston’s next ride will be defending his National Elite
Men’s Road Race national title in Christchurch in January, after he added the 2013 title to his wins in 2006 and 2011. After that he will return to Europe to ride for the newly formed Trek Factory Racing, which bought out the RadioShack Leopard team. Fellow Ashburton rider Jason Christie, who raced his third tour last year, also won’t be in the 2013 edition, he’s currently in Singapore waiting to race for his OCBC Singapore Pro Cycling Team.
The tour starts on Sunday with the 4.2km prologue in Invercargill before looping around the Southern territory over six days, ending up back in Invercargill next Saturday. 2012 winner Mike Northey heads the entry list with riders such as the evergreen Gordon McCauley looking to claim the overall honours, while members of Team Calder Stewart Road in the Benchmark Cycling Series, Tim Rush, Alex McGregor and Andy van der Hayden are also contesting the 900km tour.

Vettel ‘relentless’ Newly-crowned quadruple Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel should be forgiven this weekend if he appears reluctant to grab pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Ferns snatch late draw A late Hannah Wilkinson equaliser has earned the Football Ferns a 1-1 draw against the World Cup and Olympic champions USA in an international friendly in Columbus yesterday. After Sydney Leroux had given the home side a 43rd minute lead, Wilkinson brought the Football Ferns - ranked 19th in the world - level with the London Olympic champions when the striker drove the ball home beyond USA goalkeeper Hope Solo in the 87th minute after a 35-yard run and pass from centre back Rebekah Stott. Earlier in the match, New Zealand goalkeeper Erin Nayler made a telling contribution; saving a 12th minute Abby Wambach penalty after Ria Percival was ruled to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Fenton finally ready for right back role By Daniel RichaRDson Ernie Merrick’s vision of Louis Fenton playing at right back for the Wellington Phoenix may finally take shape across the Tasman against the Melbourne Victory on Monday night. Fenton, who predominantly played in an attacking role during his debut season in the A-League last year, has been anointed by Merrick as the club’s solution to the troublesome position. The Phoenix have never enjoyed a long-term right back during their history and Fen-
ton’s switch to defence was delayed this year after he dislocated his shoulder in the preseason. Youngster Luke Adams played at right back during the Phoenix’s week one loss to Brisbane but struggled, while All White Leo Bertos has done the job for the past two weeks as Wellington have recorded back-to-back draws. As Merrick’s side go in search of their first win under his watch, he indicated Fenton may be given an opportunity on Monday. “He’s trained really hard over
the last couple of weeks,” Merrick said. “Before that he was doing a lot of work, ball-centred. We played an almost game-like scenario yesterday here when we were practicing starting off well from the first minute and Louie’s been really good, so he’ll come in to the squad.” Merrick had no concerns about how the talented 20-yearold from Tawa would adjust to life as a fullback. “Because he’s got that pace and he can tackle,” Merrick reasoned. “He can get forward, he’s got endurance and he’s a skil-

The Tech Sharks’ reign as Mid Canterbury senior cricket Twenty20 champions faces its biggest test tomorrow. The Sharks have been the team to beat in Twenty20 cricket for five seasons, winning all five finals and only dropping two games since the inaugural competition in 2009-10. In 2013-14 they only scraped into the final after a big loss to the Stags threatened to derail their finals run, until results went their way last week to clinch a sixth-straight final. The Sharks have been the leading team in all forms of cricket for the last three seasons, able to claim three of the four major trophies in each season, the one constant being the Twenty20 trophy. Their bogey team has twice been Allenton, and that familiar foe could start the season denying the Sharks a trophy. Allenton had been average-at-best performers in the Twenty20 format in the last two seasons after making the final in 2010-11, losing to the Sharks. Casualties are taken all the time. There has to be a next man. And that next man has to be ready. In the case of Bird, it’s more than that. Of all the new boys his future looks the brightest. There is a world-class combination in front of him, but the expectation is that over the next year, Bird may leapfrog Luke Romano and put pressure on Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick.
Bird is definitely a keeper the selectors know that already. For Kerr-Barlow, tomorrow is a chance to deliver an accurate, imposing performance. It will be his first start, and ideally the selectors will see enough to feel comfortable giving him more game time off the bench. Aaron Smith has been, arguably, the world’s best No 9 this year, but he’s played a huge amount of rugby. The aerobic demands of the position are exacting and this deep into the season it would be prudent in the next few weeks to inject Kerr-Barlow into games earlier. For Whitelock and Tooma-
ga-Allen, tomorrow will give a taste: something for them to savour over the summer. The hardest to place is Halai - who despite the fact he’ll be wearing No 11, will be on the right wing. Tua delay won’t help Ustinov As Alexander Ustinov once again met David Tua in the countdown to their heavyweight clash, the focus went on how the delay caused by the Kiwi-Samoan’s calf injury has affected the giant Belarusian. The short answer is: Not well. Originally scheduled for the end of August, the pair will finally meet at Claudelands Arena on Saturday, November 16. In between times Ustinov has been forced to fly to and from Russia and cope with the attendant climate and time zone changes. When Mid Canterbury cricketer Harry Jones claimed wickets with the first two balls of his maiden premiere club cricket match in England, little did he know it would only be the start of a stellar tour. The 19-year-old cricketer recently returned to Ashburton after a five month stint in the UK, where he played division one club cricket for the small
town of Keynsham, near Bristol, during a gap year opportunity. The Mid Canterbury senior cricketer went over expecting it to be a learning experience, matching it with the best club and county players in Europe. But with 56 wickets for the season and a promotion to number three in the Keynsham batting order, Jones himself quickly became one of the stars of the competition.
“I knew the conditions over there would suit me, but I didn’t expect to claim the most wickets in the club and play as well as I did,” Jones said, after the late Mid Canterbury cricket coach Gary Ashworth set up the opportunity through his contacts. Four five-wicket bags, the scalps of top order England county players and wickets on his first two balls of his premiere club debut match all contributed to a memorable season
that also saw the seam bowler selected in a representative team to take on a Hyderabad under 20 team from India. There were also a few “50 and 60 run innings” which saw him promoted to number three in the batting order to show he is a genuine all-rounder. “After leaving school I didn’t know what I wanted to do career-wise, so I thought this was a good opportunity to get away for a gap year,” he said.
Trips to London, Scotland and Greece were all part of the experience that saw him develop life-long friends, and also bring back an English player to play for the Tech Sharks this season. Right now Jones is planning to work the next few months in the Silver Fern Farms meatworks in Fairton, and of course play cricket. He plans to return for another stint in the UK next year.
