District impresses visiting MP By ColiN williSCroft

colin.w@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury people probably don’t realise how lucky they are living where they do, a visiting National MP says. Matt King, MP for Northland, visited Ashburton on Friday. He was in town at the invitation of Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. Both men are members of Parliament’s justice select committee and they took the opportunity to meet with Safer Ashburton restorative justice co-ordinator Toni Sweetman. Falloon said he hopes to get other members of the committee to visit the area so they gain a better appreciation of what the issues are in Mid Canterbury. It was only the second time King had visited Ashburton but he was impressed with what he saw, describing it as a “different world” to what he was used to. “It’s totally different. The landscape. There’s a lot of life. A lot of business and commerce going on. There’s a lot of positives. “It’s the way things should be.” His own area of Northland faced some challenges, but there were also plenty of opportunities there, he said, pointing out its untapped potential. “It’s only two-and-a-half to three hours from Auckland, with great scenery and climate. What it’s lacking is infrastructure.” King acknowledged that Northland’s unemployment rate was

much higher than Mid Canterbury’s, but he said it wasn’t that there were no jobs available in the region. “There’s a lot of employment available. The trouble is finding the right people. People who are drug-free and have the right attitude.” A friend of his runs a forestry

business in Kaikohe and King said that business could take another 50 people. “But he just can’t get them.” A former police detective who worked in both South Auckland and Northland, King said he would bring a lot of practical experience to the justice select committee, which along with Falloon,

also includes former justice minister and current Selwyn MP Amy Adams and former police association president Greg O’Connor. King was quite confident that any issue that came before the committee would be one he had seen or experienced before, or was at least well aware of, which would be to his advantage.

As MP for Northland, King was up against New Zealand First leader and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters during the recent general election. He said no-one gave him much of a chance unseating Peters, despite the seat being a former National stronghold. However, he spent 10 months campaigning the old-fashioned way, clocking up 35,000km around the electorate, door-knocking every business and as many houses as he could. “I did the hard yards, although the mainstream media didn’t give me any coverage. They were more interested in him (Peters). He was mic’d up all the time, but the cameras avoided me like the plague unless I happened to be standing in shot in the background.” Election night itself was a real rollercoaster, King said, with he and Peters trading the lead as the night progressed, before he pulled away at the end, winning by just over 1000 votes. However, he never received a call on the night from Peters conceding defeat, although they have run into each other in Parliament. “He shook my hand and said congratulations.” For now though both King and Falloon are keeping busy with their select committee work and representing regional electorates. “If you’re doing this job properly, no matter what you’re doing you’re on the job seven days a week. It doesn’t really stop.”

Barrhill heritage deal with council formalised By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For years there’s been something of an informal agreement between the Barrhill Hall Society and the Ashburton District Council but this has now moved on to a formal footing. At this week’s council finance and business support committee meeting councillors Mark Malcolm and Peter Reveley were appointed as the council’s link with

the society to ensure the historic buildings under its care are protected and cared for. Council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said the earthquake proneness of the buildings was being assessed and a residential tenancy agreement would be put in place for the school house that was part of the heritage buildings. The council will work with the society to manage a 7890m² sec-

tion of land in the village which houses a hall, school master’s house, library, public toilet, garage, an outbuilding and an outhouse with the society continuing to have day-to-day management of the site, he said. “The council will assist in establishing an annual maintenance schedule and budget to help manage the ongoing upkeep and the society will also be able to apply for council funding and grants to go

towards those maintenance costs.” The district’s heritage values were an important consideration for the council and the community, Windleborn said. “It’s imperative that these buildings are properly cared for so that they can be appreciated for years to come.” The buildings are listed as heritage items in the district plan and are constructed of concrete. Their appearance is in generally good

condition for their age. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said appointing two councillors to the society meant the council could get up to speed quickly in an area where it had been a little remiss for several years. The Barrhill village was established in the mid-1870s after the original owner of Cowar, John Cathcart Wason, purchased 20,000 acres of land on the south bank of the Rakaia River in 1869.

Property purchase brings new civic centre closer BY SUSAN SANDYS

Ashburton’s new civic centre building project is one step closer as the Ashburton District Council finalises purchase of 255 Havelock Street. Business support group manager Paul Brake said yesterday the investment was a “strategic” one in its new library and council administration building plans. Buying the land and building at 255 Havelock Street had not formed part of the initial site

evaluation work for the building plans, Brake said, but served a strategic opportunity in providing additional land around the development site. The brick exterior two-storey commercial property came onto the market recently when the council was in negotiations for two other nearby properties. “This is a prudent investment and will assist council as development gets under way,” Brake said. The building has been added to the council’s stock of com-

mercial buildings. It is tenanted by a physiotherapist downstairs and the council plans to find a tenant for upstairs. The two other nearby properties are likely to soon come into council ownership, with conditional sale and purchase agreements signed. They represent land around the historic Methodist Church, and Paul May Motors at 243 Havelock Street. Plans are for the church hall, Paul May Motors building and current council chambers build-

ing, which is the former art gallery and museum, to be demolished. The new council library and council administration building will be a modern addition to Baring Square East, contrasting with the historic Methodist Church, planned for renovation. The council will shortly start the second phase of the library and administration building project. This will include appointing a project manager and architects, and initiating design work.

Methven has been given a little breathing space in the areas where alcohol can be consumed as the Ashburton District Council rewrites its alcohol control bylaw. Originally the town’s alcohol ban applied over most of urban Methven, but the council has decided this was overly restrictive and has narrowed the alcohol ban boundaries. Council policy analyst Rachel Thomas said the original boundaries were imposed to cover drunkenness after the Labour weekend rodeo and had remained throughout the year. This could have the effect of criminalising otherwise law-abiding citizens who chose to have a drink in a public place without realising they were in an alcohol ban area. The new policy will see the ban imposed on the Methven CBD only where the largest concentration of licensed premises are located. Over Labour weekend, however, the ban boundaries will be extended to cover the original area. Methven’s consumption ban will also come with changed hours to bring it into line with Ashburton – 9pm to 7am. Ashburton’s alcohol ban boundaries remain unchanged.

■ MID CANTERBURY CHOIR

In brief

First of two Christmas concerts proves to be a hit

Hosing restrictions on Dry conditions have hit Mid Canterbury, and the Ashburton District Council has responded, introducing Level One water restrictions. Residents connected to a council water supply in Ashburton, Rakaia, Methven, Hakatere, Chertsey, Lake Hood, Fairton, Hinds, Mt Somers and Mayfield are restricted to only using a hose on alternate days, from today. Assets manager Andrew Guthrie said dry conditions have meant residents need to be vigilant with their water use. The restriction allows residents to use a hose on even or odd days of the calendar, depending on their street number or location. The restriction will remain in place until further notice. To check which day you can use a hand-held hose, visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz/ waterrestrictions

The familiar melodies of the festive season were revived with vigour at St Stephen’s Church yesterday. The Mid Canterbury Choir delivered the first of their two annual Christmas concerts featuring an assortment of the classics – from Mary’s Boy Child to Ding Dong Merrily on High, Gloria in Excelsis to Silent Night. Choir manager Carol Gunn said the group were “really, really pleased” with how it all went. “It was a very receptive audience. We had lots of old faithful concert-goers but also a few new faces which was lovely.” The group were directed by Kathy McKimmie, accompanied by Sylvia Watson and also joined by guest soloist Logan Keggenhoff from Geraldine High School. Keggenhoff is an accomplished singer and cellist. He treated yesterday’s crowd to performances of Mary’s Boy Child and When a Child is Born. The group will perform again tomorrow at St Mary’s Church in Geraldine.

Brother shoots brother Police are investigating an Eastern Bay of Plenty shooting. Emergency services were called to the incident where a gun was used on a family member about 2pm yesterday. Police said in a statement: “One brother shot the other in the leg. Both are known to police and the address is also known to police.” The victim was flown to hospital by helicopter in a serious to moderate condition, police said. - NZME

Sugar free policy draws flak By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Seven members of the public said “no” and four said “yes” when the Ashburton District Council put a sugar sweetened beverages policy out for public consultation. If adopted by the council the policy would see the availability of sugar sweetened beverages limited in council workplaces, at events where the council provided funding and at events provided by council at councilowned facilities or on councilowned land. It would mean that at council events only healthy beverage choices would be available unless they were bought from food trucks, stalls or vending machines. Several submitters opposing

the policy were council staff, with one, Mike Farrell choosing to speak to councillors at Thursday’s by-law and policy subcommittee meeting about his opposition. Implementing a sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) policy was not the council’s core business, Farrell said. “The impact on the community would be nil, it’s a waste of ratepayer money,” he said. If the council implemented this policy it was taking away individuals’ choice, Farrell said. “There are many things that need to be addressed across our district other than whether you drink sugar sweetened beverages or a healthier alternative.” If the council wanted to target anyone it should be the large

scale suppliers such as supermarkets, dairies and entertainment centres. Councillor Leen Braam said a policy like this was “holding hands with people who should be standing on their own two feet”. Sugar bans were bigger than the council, they belonged with the government, Neil Brown said. “We shouldn’t be doing this for the Ashburton District. It’s up to central government to decide what they will do and we’ll do what’s handed down to us,” he said. Stuart Wilson agreed. It was about personal choice and once a council started interfering in that where did it stop, he said. “And how would we police this? Will we tip drinks out in front of

Myrtle rust spreads

people? It would be a Clayton’s policy.” Diane Rawlinson supported the council establishing a policy for its venues. “I support this in principle through the government it will come our way and it’s good for us to be leading the way,” she said. Russell Ellis was also in favour of the policy, saying it was a chance for Ashburton to show a lead to the rest of the country. “It’s about offering more healthy options. We won’t be going out there and knocking people on the knuckles if they don’t get it right.” Mayor Donna Favel also supported moving the policy forward and used her casting vote to ensure it went back to full council for further debate.

Myrtle rust has now spread to Wellington, days after the fungal plant disease was found in Auckland for the first time. The Ministry for Primary Industries’ laboratory confirmed infections in three ramarama plants in a Hutt Valley garden. The plants were heavily infected, myrtle rust response incident controller Catherine Duthie said. - NZME

■ ENVIRONMENT CANTERBURY

Trapping programme to resume Environment Canterbury will resume its trapping programme at the Ashburton River mouth following an internal review focused on safety. The trapping programme provides protection from predators for endangered birds that nest in the area. It is implemented by community volunteers under Environment Canterbury supervision. As part of the review, the regional council spoke to the owners of a small dog which was caught in a pest trap on the south side of the Ashburton River earlier this month and subsequently died from its injuries. Ashburton Zone Manager Janine Holland said staff and volunteers are very motivated to ensure the safety of people and their animals in the vicinity of the traps next to the Hakatere community and Ashton Beach. “We now have clear signage on the southern and northern sides of the river mouth advising of the trapping programme. Additionally we have sprayed around, and highlighted, the trapping sites with pink ribbon to make their locations obvious.”

“Traps will be moved away from the carpark area at Ashton Beach and relocated closer to the river mouth. The aim is to provide a greater buffer zone between the public and our traps, while ensuring protection for the endangered species that nest in this area. “Ashburton people understand how important this area is as a breeding ground for nationally endangered black fronted tern, nationally critical black-billed gull and nationally vulnerable wrybill.” A recent bird count in the area found nearly 10,000 white-fronted terns are currently nesting at the river mouth, alongside more than 10,000 black-billed gulls. The terns are about halfway through hatching and the gulls about 90 per cent through hatching. “Resuming our trapping programme during this sensitive nesting phase is critical to protect these birds,” Janine Holland said. “We encourage visitors to the Ashburton River mouth and surrounding beaches to maintain some distance from the bird colonies to allow the young chicks time to mature and leave their nests safely.”

■ CHRISTMAS WISHES

Time to spread some Christmas cheer By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

It spread glimmers of goodwill right throughout the Ashburton district last year – now, the popular Elderly Christmas Wish project is back. The Ashburton Guardian initiative launched last year pairs big-hearted locals with older residents seeking a special little something during the festive season. Last year saw 45 wishes granted. Home baking was delivered and gardens were groomed. Residents relished new fences built in their backyards, trips out to the coffee shop, and even having their clothesline restrung. One recipient had rehomed to Ashburton after the Christchurch earthquake, and said she felt surprised to be picked and very lucky to be lent a hand when a local washed her net curtains. In Methven a school basketball team descended on a window-washing job, and at the Coldstream Villas eight residents indulged in tasty, hand-made treats. Now, the next round of wish-granting is mere days away and individuals are being urged to get in touch. The Guardian would like to hear from anyone seeking help with a task or a little gift to light up their day – with all wishes due by December 8. Wishes can be sent to reception@theguardian.co.nz, dropped off at Level 3 Somerset House or posted to PO Box 77, Ashburton 7700.

Dream it, bake it By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

“If you can dream it, I can bake it.” That is Tharina Nel’s motto in her newly established Ashburton business, The Cakelady. Nel and husband Stan have lived in the town since emigrating from South Africa in February, and she opened The Cakelady at her Allens Road home in September. The pair came here for a better future for themselves and their 11-year-old twins, wanting to escape the high unemployment and high crime rate in their home country. “It’s a beautiful country and it’s safe,” she said of New Zealand. Stan is an electrician and they emigrated here after he gained a job at EA Networks. Nel began her cake baking business in South Africa, opening it under a different name, Exclusively Handmade, about 10 years ago. She decided to change the name after realising everyone just seemed to call her The Cakelady. She was initially a bookkeeper, but shut down this business after having her twins, who are a boy and a girl. Needing something to do as they grew out of their baby stage, she took to baking.

She thought about turning it into a business, and found the idea took off after she went café to café to tell them about her work. And after a while, orders for larger items such as wedding cakes started to come in. “I didn’t know much about it, but I learned very quickly,” she said. Her biggest job in South Africa was baking three gigantic cakes, using 500 eggs altogether, for shopping centre promoters who wanted everyone who visited the centre that day to receive a slice of cake. Since being in Ashburton, she had baked a range of interesting creations, including a traction engine cake, and a truck cake for 80 people which took four days to make. Nel said some people who received her cake creations did not want to cut them, such as one friend of hers who had a massive castle made for her young daughter. “It stood in her kitchen for months,” Nel said. However, she always advised people to just take a photo of the cake, and then cut and consume. The cake itself, under the icing, was too good to go to waste, as she always used natural and wholesome ingredients and delicious recipes.

A chance encounter led Laurence Hanrahan to run into an old friend of his recently after having not seen him for more than 20 years. Matt Markham explains.

Renowned trainer

meets

an old mate

C

hance, as they say, is a wonderful thing. The game of racing horses is so often about chance. It’s a chance that you breed a champion. It’s a chance that you bet on the right horse. It’s a chance that the next horse to walk through your stable door is the best you’ll ever have. And it was pure chance that led Winchmore horseman and highly-regarded harness racing trainer Laurence Hanrahan to meet up with a star from his past a few weeks ago. For the past seven years, Hanrahan has been visiting a farm south of Ashburton and for those seven years, he’s been unaware that just beyond the farm gate an old mate of his has been standing in a paddock. Hanrahan knew who it was straight away, but he couldn’t believe that the horse standing in

front of him was New Age Man. A pacer of immense talent, New Age Man took Hanrahan international as a trainer – winning 13 races from 13 starts before injury halted his career. And to see him again was something special. “I think my jaw might have hit the floor when this farmer told me the name of the horse,” Hanrahan said. “I certainly got a bit choked up that’s for sure. “I never knew what happened to him after he finished racing, he went back to his owner and that was the last I heard of it. “To be honest, I presumed that he had died.” Hanrahan’s job away from the racing scene sees him driving around the countryside and visiting farms across the Ashburton district and further afield. “I’d talked to the guy who owns

it a few times, but we got chatting about how he gets around the massive block of land that he’s got and he was saying how he uses horses and loves using standardbreds because they are so quiet.” That conversation led to Hanrahan asking more questions about some of the horses he currently had and when the farmer mentioned an old gelding who he’d got “off a lady from Ashburton, who was named New Age Man” everything clicked. It had been 20 years since Hanrahan had seen his old mate and he wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity for a catch up, so with the farmer’s permission he ventured into the paddock with the warning that the old boy could be a bit hard to catch. “I walked through the gate and spotted him straight away and he went to run away.

“I yelled out to him ‘Harry you old bugger, get over here and do what you’re told’ and he stopped and turned around and came back to me. “It was great to see him, he looks 25-years-old, but is still in pretty good nick.” The moment was special because New Age Man took Hanrahan and his family on an incredible ride. In his 13-start career, he was undefeated and claimed major race wins in the Round Up 4 Quarter Mile at Group One level and also by the Forbury 4YO Championship and the Superstars Championship at Addington at Group Two. He won the Four and FiveYear-Old Championship at Harold Park in 1997 as well and was a hot favourite to win the Chariots of Fire before he was injured and never raced again.

“He was a great horse and one I still consider myself very lucky to have trained. “That he remained unbeaten was a testament to just how good he was, not many can go that many starts without being beaten.” At 25 time is probably pretty limited for Harry and Hanrahan was keen to see that he lived out his life on his own accord. “I actually asked that if he got to the point where he wasn’t well if I could come and pick him up and take him home so we could have him there and bury him when he passes away. “But the farmer said that he’ll make sure he gets a really good spot up under the hills for him which I think is perfect.” Hanrahan hopes though that there’s still a few more catch-ups with his old mate before it gets to that point.

Where’s your favourite place to visit in Mid Canterbury? Home being with family is very important to us.

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened in the shop? We once had all of our power tool reps onsite for the day and while it was quiet we had a huge Nerf gun fight. Some of our customers even joined in!

What do you think needs to be done to inject some more life into the CBD? Get rid of the meters and make parking free for either 30 mins or an hour. We need more stuff for our kids to do. What would you do if you won $2500? I would take my family away for the weekend.

Callum - Great Southern Group How long have you run the business or worked there? Six months. What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened in the shop? Someone driving the forklift into the pit. Where’s your favourite place to visit in Mid Canterbury? Lake Hood.

What do you think needs to be done to inject some more life into the CBD ? Re-do the roads to separate the throughtraffic and allow town traffic better access to CBD shopping. What would you do if you won $2500? Take a trip away.

Melissa - Style Footwear How long have you run the business or worked there? I have owned this business for five years, we have been in our current site for three.

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened in the shop? We have lots of funny moments – nothing really stands out. We have plenty of laughs every day with our customers. Where’s your favourite place to visit in Mid Canterbury? My home – Seriously I love many places in Mid Canterbury, it’s my home.

What do you think needs to be done to inject some more life into the CBD ? Free parking – not just an hour on the main street but all the streets. It’s something I hear on a daily basis that annoys our residents. Out-of-town visitors can’t believe a town of our size charges for parking. What would you do if you won $2500? Get the finishing touches done to my home, my husband would probably say more plants for the garden, my latest addiction.

OUR VIEW

Death no place for insensitive comments Matt Markham

EDITOR

I

’ve always been an advocate for freedom of speech on social media and that everyone is entitled to an opinion. On Thursday night that opinion changed somewhat and unfortunately it was not for the better. We had the unfortunate task of breaking the news that a toddler had drowned in a pond in rural Mid Canterbury on Thursday. Absolutely horrific news that a young child could be taken away so suddenly and I think everyone’s hearts here at the Guardian broke a little for the young child’s family. As is always the case with such news, it drew plenty of attention and comment on our Facebook page. Many offered their condolences and were genuinely sympathetic. In true Mid Canterbury style there were offers of support and questions from some asking what they could do to help. In the face of darkness, it was quite heart-warming stuff. Then a select group of posters went the complete opposite direction and decided that it was their right and their need to inform everyone of factually incorrect details and accusations which were not called for. Reading the comments left me sick to my stomach and wondering what it must take for someone to even want to suggest such nasty and vitriolic things during such a difficult and sad time and also what sad lives those people must lead if they get their kicks out of making such comments. Those who made the comments were banned and their posts were deleted – but the damage was done. And by banning them we unfortunately will now encounter others in the future – but they will be others who can expect the same treatment. We are in the business of trying to bring you the news, as soon as we can and across as many different platforms as we can. Some find it through the paper each day, others on Facebook or the Ashburton App but our hope is that anything of a sensitive nature that is being commented on is being shown the respect it deserves. Compassion and humility are wonderful qualities for a person to have. Many people in our community have both. Unfortunately, there are a few who do not.

Here’s to our mums O

ur mothers are some of the most undervalued components of the education system we have. While our children are picking up the rising buzz leading to Christmas, and while our dads are coping with long work hours pressures – especially when associated with the farming businesses in this town, our mums keep operating at the same level they have been on throughout the year, and now with more pressure. At school we value the mums who keep it together when things aren’t going so well. There are the mums who get called in because their child’s behaviour has taken a turn for the worse. Sometimes they are at work when they get a call from the school. Sometimes they are finally getting a break, or having time with a younger child when the phone rings. Telling parents you need to see them is never easy. Most of the time it is the mum who comes in and talks through what has been going on. Yes, they get angry and upset, but underneath it all, they want their child to be happy and succeed at school. It is hard for mums to have an impartial point of view at times, because this is their child, whom they have raised from birth. When families fall apart and

parents go their separate ways, it is our mums who almost always keep the children. They are the ones who must go about the mundane and the necessary aspects of daily life, keeping a brave face on, until the door is closed or they have a coffee with their friends. At these times I have seen mums organise housing, quit jobs or have to find a job, arrange care for their children, struggle with the bills and worry about what the emotional impact will be on their children. I hate it when others, especially males run down solo mums. They know nothing of the grief and pressure our mums carry. When our parents get older and need care and more attention, it often falls to our mums to step in. Phone calls, visits, then visits to town or doctors’ appointments or more, become part of their life. They carry the responsibility of reversing the roles and caring for their parents, while inside cry for the downward advance of the

So it is no surprise that when the holidays approach, I can see the excitement of our children rise, while our mums pick up the pace and plan for the break they may not get. School gives mums a six-hour break, whether it is for them to work or recharge, or take care of other matters. The holidays seem to just bring more and more jobs to do. And when our mums do work, they are often in part time or shift work, with low wages and little recognition of what they do. The bottom line is, our mums

Let us not rush to Christmas O

ne evening I was walking from my office at St. David’s Church with our son and daughter when our son observed a Christmas tree and lights in a local shop and he made a comment – “where are people rushing to, it is still November and too early for Christmas trees to be up”. I am sure that we have all observed that nowadays people start to think about Christmas from as early as October and by the end of November, Christmas trees are up and lights are brightly flickering. One wonders why the rush to Christmas. Christians have a special season just before Christmas which is observed annually. This season is the season of Advent. Advent is a four-week period before Christmas. During this time, the church prepares for the celebration of the birth of Christ which took place over 2000 years ago.

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

Advent is a season of waiting. During this season, we also wait for the coming of Christ Jesus, the Hope of glory. Advent then calls us to place our hope in the day when Jesus will return again to establish his kingdom where there will be complete healing and light. As we wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, let us think and reflect on how we can share hope within our communities. Let us share hope with people who are struggling with life issues. I have observed that Christmas can be a time of loneliness for many people. Where we meet people who are lonely, let us not rush away but spend time to comfort them and offer companionship. As

we look toward Christmas, let us not rush about but walk with each other so that we may be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful” in serving Christ and one another. Christmas time can be a tough time for some people and so let us share hope which will get us through the tough times and keep us from giving up. On behalf of St. David’s Church and the Ashburton Ministers’ Association, I would like to wish you a blessed Christmas and may the peace of Christ be with you. This week share hope. Why Chinese house buyers love NZ By Anne GiBson The Government’s planned foreigners house buyer ban has prompted a Chinese property website to reveal the top four reasons its citizens want our houses. “Find out four reasons why Chinese buyers like New Zealand,” said Juwai.com which claims to be the No.1 Chinese international property website, commenting on Government plans to ban foreigners from buying existing homes but not from building them. New Zealand ranks as the sixth most popular property buying destination for Chinese citizens, Juwai says, after the United States, Australia, Thailand, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Phil Twyford, Housing Minister, has expressed concerns about Chinese house-buying intentions here: “You can’t blame people for trying to make a dollar but it’s the Government’s job to ensure the housing market works for New Zealand. That’s why we’re stopping people who don’t have the right to live here from buying houses here.” Juwai said the reasons Chinese

want New Zealand property are: ■

Liveability: New Zealand ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world, Juwai said, resulting in one of the best qualities of life. “Life in New Zealand offers a healthier work-life balance and at a slower pace, which is a huge contrast to the high-pressure lifestyle in China.” Environmental health: Chinese want clean air and high water quality. “New Zealand

air is so sought-after by Chinese that it has given birth to air farmers such as Christchurch-based Breathe Ezy, who are literally making money out of thin air by harvesting fresh air from the mountains and valleys of New Zealand into cans to sell in China,” Juwai said. Food safety: 77.3 per cent of Chinese consider food safety their prime concern and New Zealand is “famed for its food quality, integrity and strin-

gent safety standards. It’s no surprise that Chinese would mark this down as one of the top reasons for liking New Zealand.” Great outdoors: Beautiful clear skies, fresh air, pristine waters, rolling mountains and picture-perfect natural wonders like Milford Sound and Lake Taupo were listed as reasons for this drawcard and Juwai mentioned The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.

These factors were “more than enough to see why Chinese buyers, who increasingly desire a space to breathe and really live, are highly likely to continue to be enchanted with New Zealand – even with the new foreign buyer ban looming”. Juwai predicted Chinese people would rush to buy properties here before the ban and afterwards, continue to enter the New Zealand property market by developing properties. “Chinese homebuyers have shown a tendency in the past to speed up their plans to purchase overseas properties when new taxes or restrictions are on the cards, such as in Vancouver and Sydney when new foreign buyer taxes were announced,” Juwai said. The Government’s KiwiBuild could benefit Chinese buying property here, it said. “With the new Labour-led Government planning to build 100,000 new homes over the next 10 years under the KiwiBuild scheme, this means New Zealand could still be a viable choice for [Chinese],” Juwai said. – NZME

The Government will cancel the previous administration’s tax cuts, slow debt repayment and weed out low-priority spending to fund its policies, with the details to be set out in the December 14 Budget update, says Finance Minister Grant Robertson. He told an ANZ Breakfast in Auckland that by reversing National’s tax cuts, which were to kick in next April, the coalition government will create “$8 billion of fiscal headroom over the forecast period”. That would “more-than meet the costs of the 100-Day Plan and provide further resources to invest in Budget 2018 and beyond,” he said in speech notes for the address. The Government would also slow debt repayments, aiming to reduce net core Crown debt to 20 per cent of gross domestic product within five years. That was among Labour’s policy pledges in its election campaign and pushes the target out to 2022 compared with National’s target of 2020. Robertson said the Government’s commitments have yet to be finalised as part of the normal Budget process. He also flagged the use of infrastructure bonds to

fund key infrastructure developments. “We will, however, be providing the current estimates of the costs of the policies in the coalition and confidence and supply agreements at the time of the release of the Budget Policy Statement,” he said. The high-level speech is short on detailed costings, but Robertson indicated he is taking an all-ofgovernment approach to finding the funding. He had told all ministers “to assess their budgets against the new government’s priorities. If programmes are found that do not match these priorities then ministers should consider whether this funding can be re-invested in new, higher priority areas which match our strategy. This work is already under way and will contribute to Budget 2018 planning”. Robertson said he wanted to move away from using GDP alone as a measure of New Zealand’s success. While economic growth has been relatively impressive “it tells us only a fraction of the story. Firstly, it is a measure of activity, not the quality of that activity. And secondly, on a per capita basis, our performance has been significantly less impressive than many of our

OECD counterparts”. A broader framework was still being developed but would include core elements of lifting living standards and well-being. Those changes wouldn’t be made in time for Budget 2018, but he planned to give more details at that time. Goals such as reducing child poverty would require amendment of the Public Finance Act, he said. “Success for us will mean more than just a strong balance sheet – as important as that is,” he said. “It will be marked by how we improve the well-being of all our citizens.” Repealing National’s tax cuts would also fund the Government’s Families Package, which aimed “to give low and middle-income workers a much-needed boost in incomes and address inequality and child poverty”. Robertson said economists agree there will be some softening of economic growth over the next year “as the housing market remains flat and as net migration tapers off slightly”. “Then, there is a consensus of a stronger growth track through 2019 and 2020 which is expected to be supported by government policies such as increasing R&D tax credits, increased wages and export growth,” he said. – NZME

Baby dies in hot car Sleep-deprived mum Emma Lane mistakenly thought she’d brought all her three children in from her car after a busy morning on a hot February day in Melbourne in 2016. Nine-month-old Hugh, her “false memory” told her, was safely resting in his cot, where she had placed him after returning home. About two hours later, when it was time to take her daughter to ballet, that she went to wake Hugh – but he wasn’t there. Her worst fears dawning, the frantic mother ran screaming for help down the driveway only to find her baby still in the car severely distressed by the heat. The temperature in the car was more than 40 degrees on the afternoon of February 4. Emma screamed for help, and she and neighbours rushed the child inside to cool him with wet towels, water, a fan ... a packet of frozen peas, and called an ambulance. Little Hugh died in hospital four days later. State Coroner judge Sara Hinchey told an inquest into Hugh’s death that “there is no one to blame. It is simply a tragic accident”. Emma Lane, she said, was

not criminally responsible for the sad death. She indicated she would not be referring the case to the Department of Public Prosecutions for criminal investigation. The Mount Martha mum was juggling three children under the age of five as well as her part-time job as a radiographer. Hugh had been inadvertently left in the car when

Emma arrived home with her children at lunch time after taking them to kindergartens and swimming lessons. After unbuckling and settling inside the house with her other two children, she returned to the car to collect wet towels from the boot, and went back inside, breaking her usual habit of taking all three together, the Coroner’s Court heard. “At this time, Emma believed

she had put him in his cot,” counsel assisting the coroner, Jodie Burns said. But “it then occurred to her that Hugh may still be in the car”, Ms Burns said. “She screamed out for help – she was beside herself.” Hugh suffered multiple organ injuries and had worsening cerebral swelling. His life support was switched off four days later. - AAP

In brief Smith hints at farewell Australia captain Cameron Smith has hinted Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup final against England could be a farewell for a number of Kangaroos – including himself. Both Smith and Billy Slater, who are the only remaining survivors of Australia’s 2008 World Cup team, have refused to commit to playing on in the green and gold beyond Saturday’s decider. Slater has already admitted the final could be his last test match. - AAP

It happens every week in the NRL – it’s just a bit of mind games,” said Meninga. - AAP

Hampstead on a roll BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

With the dust settling on the first round of the Mid Canterbury interclub tennis competition, the long summer of tennis continues with round two kicking off today. The competition will start at the earlier time of 11am today with the Canterbury Premier Interclub competition also being hosted at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, which begins at 1.30pm. Hampstead took out round

one honours last week after a winner takes all encounter with Methven. Hampstead came out on top, winning by four matches to two, and will be hoping to keep their winning run going this week when they take on Southern. They will likely view the matchup as a chance to start the second round on the front foot, with Southern only able to collect one win in round one. Aidan Mitchell and Pete Kirwan will likely be the standout

performers once again after narrowly losing their doubles match last week before winning both their singles, while the doubles pair of Jade Brosnahan and Mary-Anne Thyne will be wanting to continue their good form. Methven will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of their loss last Saturday when they take on Tinwald. Tinwald, alongside Allenton, were two teams who managed two wins in the first round, but

never looked close to touching Methven and Hampstead, and will need a very strong performance to get something out of this weekend. In the last match up of the day, Allenton will play Fairton, which if the last time these two sides met is anything to go by, will be a close game. Allenton narrowly took out the victory seven sets to six, and are coming off a win last week, while Fairton lost narrowly to Tinwald six sets to seven.

Beating the Australian Jillaroos will be a tough assignment but the Kiwi Ferns are used to overcoming adversity ahead of today’s Women’s Rugby League World Cup final in Brisbane. Each of the Kiwi Ferns 24-woman squad has had to make huge personal sacrifices in balancing their playing careers with work and family commitments during their buildup to the tournament over the last year. The players have had to get by on the minimum $30 daily allowance. - NZME

Quantum leap needed Kiwi Ferns coach Tony Benson says his side need to make a “quantum leap” to get past the Australian Jillaroos in tonight’s Women’s Rugby League World Cup final in Brisbane. The Jillaroos are favourites to retain the title they claimed with a historic win over the Kiwi Ferns in the 2013 tournament final, while New Zealand are desperate to avenge that loss and win a fourth World Cup after triumphs in 2000, 2005 and 2008. Benson is confident his team can do the job at Suncorp but believes they’ll need to find another level if they are to topple the Jillaroos who have dominated recent clashes between the two sides. “We have to make a quantum leap and I think in the girls’ minds they have. I really feel like I’m here with a bunch of international rugby league elite athletes and they feel that way too.” - NZME

Demolition derby returns By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Sunday is looking to be a perfect day for petrol-heads with the Ashburton Speedway hosting its Christmas meeting.

The championship battle in the BNT V8s gets under way at Taupo again this weekend, and following the opening round at Pukekohe, Australian driver Jason Bargwanna leads the points table having taken the round one win. The 2000 Bathurst 1000 winner was buoyed by the performance of his Richards Team Motorsport Toyota Camry and is quietly confident as the championship moves to Taupo. “After last season, we had a few dramas early on which hurt us, but we finished strong,” said Bargwanna. “Championships are about dealing with all kinds of conditions, weather, mechanical, whatever gets thrown at you, and we demonstrated that at Pukekohe.” - NZME

Rush Hour debut New Zealand motorsport fans will get their first glimpse of Rush Hour racing this weekend at Taupo Motorsport Park. The first major event of the New Zealand Summer Series will see the debut of the all-classes handicap format that is expected to be the feature race at each meeting. The Rush Hour race will be the final race on the Saturday of each meeting with the leading cars from each individual category invited for a winner-takes-all hourlong endurance test. “Rush Hour is a one-hour feature race with a twist and the twist is the pit stop,” promoter Geoff Short said. “Instead of worrying about cars having parity the pit stop is almost the handicap of the car speed. “We have got four categories – Porsche, V8s, GT cars and wildcard – we could have up to 40 cars on the grid – 10 from each category. “All of those cars have a chance of winning outright.”

Cars must take a compulsory pit stop somewhere between the 20th minute and 40th minute of the race and they will spend a minimum amount of time stationary depending on the individual car’s speed. “Mike Racing from Malaysia has his Mercedes GT3 car and let’s say it goes around Taupo in 1:25m and Paul Kelly has just bought a new 991 Porsche and maybe he is going around in 1:28m,” Short explained. “It might mean that the Mercedes is stopped in the pits for a minute longer than the Porsche. “The way we have calculated it they should all cross the finish line at the same time.” The concept has drawn plenty of interest and will be livestreamed via the Speedworks website and app. “We have 210 cars entered for the event so we have a full programme,” Short said of the race meeting. “We have 11 classes including Rush Hour.” - NZME

Pritchard Shield wide open BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The rollercoaster Mid Canterbury club cricket season is just rolling on, with no clear margin forming between the teams yet in the Pritchard Shield. Currently three teams sit on two wins, with Lauriston, Allenton and Coldstream all on the magic number. The two teams that contested the final of the T20 competition, Methven and Tech, are the Pritchard Shield strugglers so far. Both sides only have one win each, with Methven winning in

the first round of the competition against Tech before only posting 70 runs in two consecutive games before having the bye. Like most clubs, Methven will be missing at least one player to Mid Canterbury’s first Hawke Cup game this weekend, and will be hoping the rest of the team can get the job done against Allenton. Allenton are beginning to show the form that allowed them to scoop nearly every piece of silverware last year, with a strong bowling attack supported by plenty of handy batsmen.

Sean Strange and Ryan Bell were standouts last week with the ball in hand, taking four and five wickets respectively., Allenton captain Jeff Naish will be pleased with how they performed last week, but will likely be looking for an improved batting performance after he had to put the run chase on his shoulders last week with a score of 42 while wickets fell cheaply around him. In the other match of the day, Lauriston will travel away from their country home for the first time in two weeks when they

head to the Ashburton Domain to face Tech. Despite their comprehensive loss to Allenton last week, Lauriston are performing strongly and have netted a big win against Methven and professionally dealt with an eight-man Coldstream side. Tech have shown they can be a dangerous side, but will be hoping they can pick up the win this weekend to cement themselves in the competition in the run in to Christmas. Coldstream sit this week out with the bye.

Neil Wagner’s test-best figures of 7-39 have given New Zealand control of the first Test against the West Indies – the tourists succumbing to the left-armer’s normal swag of short balls. The 31-year-old bowled 15 overs in a row from the southern end of Wellington’s Basin Reserve in the early summer heat and the Windies wilted to 134 all out in their first innings. In reply New Zealand were 85-2 at stumps on day one, Jeet Raval not out 29 and Ross Taylor 12. Tom Latham had gone for 37, tamely pulling Jason Holder to Kemar Roach at midwicket before Roach snapped the prize wicket of Kane Williamson, caught in the gully for one. The day belonged to Wagner, whose 7-39 outshone his previous best of 6-41 at Bulawayo last year and are the fourth-best figures by a New Zealand bowler. Much of the pre-match talk was about New Zealand swing bowler Trent Boult and the possible debut of paceman Lockie Ferguson. The West Indies had also talked about attaining consistency and scoring big runs. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bowl on the verdant Basin pitch. However, he had to wait 90 minutes for the first breakthrough as top-scorer Kieran Powell (42) and Kraigg Brathwaite (24) – the only scores of note – put on 59 for the first wicket. Wagner was the second change bowler and, as he has done many times before, bent his back to push the ball into the batsman with short balls. It was Wagner’s fifth five-wicket haul, in his 33rd Test. Boult finished with figures of 2-36. - NZME

■ OPINION

Getting the right man to pull on that captain’s armband S port needs leaders, and generally the selectorial/coaching conglomerate come up with the right man for the job. That leader has to exhibit high levels of people-managing, all the while having to keep up his/ her own performance intensity, and cope with all the off-field demands as well. We’ve seen plenty of them in our national game over the years; in recent times Toddy always springs to mind as the man who would pull the Crusaders together; 20 points down with a minute to go, Toddy says follow me and the red and blacks would invariably respond, rolling over for one, two or three quick tries, whatever was required to get the job done. There was another Cantab who didn’t do a bad job either, and that one went on to add a couple of World Cups to his resume.

But rugby certainly isn’t the only sport where the demonstration of courage, superior mental strength, physical power and a bit of motivational ability thrown in to get your team across the line is paramount. Cricket has thrown up two shining examples in the last seven days. First-up there was the Australian team wobbling a bit as the Poms put the pressure on, with Bancroft, danger-man Warner and Khawaja all back in the shed cheaply. Enter SPD Smith. (the D stands for Devereux. True!) More than eight hours of batting later, the Aussie innings was over, with SPD Smith not-out, 141 runs on the scoreboard beside his name. It was easily the slowest century of his career, but surely one of

the most important, and inspirational. This is the Ashes, the most significant cricketing contest on the planet in anyone’s language, and at the Gabba where the Englishmen gave themselves a fair shot at victory, the quintessential captain’s knock took his team from a likely 100-plus run deficit to a small but vital lead, and more crucially showed his men the path to victory. While Smith is rightly regarded as one of the best batsmen of our time, and with a current test average of 61-point-something he’s likely to be well up there in the all-time pantheon, there’s another national skipper out there who matches him, all over the park. When MS Dhoni began to wind down his illustrious career, millions of Indians the world over worried about the succession

Steve Devereux MY SHOUT

thing – they needn’t have. Virat Kohli put his hand up for the job, and took to it like a duck to water. His own game blossomed with the captaincy, and if he chooses to keep playing long enough, ‘unbreakable’ records owned by the Little Master himself are there for the taking. This week against the Sri Lankans, Kohli came in, not with his team in peril at all, but still a long way from victory. He judged the pace of the wicket and the ball for a while,

checked the big clock to see how the game was progressing – then launched. A double century (his fifth) in quick time later, Sri Lanka was down and out. Kohli doesn’t just excel with the bat. His team captaincy, and especially field placement (recognising his own top-line capabilities and using them appropriately) is peerless. The only downside to watching that game was having to listen to Simon Doull commentating. He’s becoming like Murray Mexted was; you get the feeling his fellow commentators would really like him to be elsewhere. But back to the captains. Let’s just hope, if called upon, Kane Williamson can step up to the plate in the same fashion for the Black Caps over the next few days.

Hawke Cup quest begins By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Cricket is a confidence game, and heading into the first round of the Hawke Cup, it is something Mid Canterbury are not lacking ahead of their clash with South Canterbury in Timaru this weekend. “It is going to be a tough game and pretty tight,” captain Matt Winter said. “We haven’t beaten South Canterbury in the Hawke Cup in a few years so it will be a challenge.” The Mid Canterbury side are coming off two wins against Canterbury Country and North Otago, and have shown improvements with the bat in hand, an area they have struggled with in the past. “Cricket is a confidence game and it is just one of those things where we have just got to carry on the good work we have been doing,” he said. “Des (Kruger) has been batting very well and everyone has been chipping in and getting Bo (Houston) back is a big help.” While playing for their clubs, most of the players are playing 45-over cricket before having to come to the two-day games that are contested in the Hawke Cup. “It is just about getting used to batting the time,” Winter said. “It is difficult as we just get the 20-over stuff to the 45-over stuff where you are only there for a couple of hours, so there is a slight change in mindset.” Winter top scored for Mid Canterbury last time out against North Otago with 57, while Houston picked up 54, alongside Kruger’s 49 as the main points of

Concern over bouncers Jimmy Anderson raised concerns about “dangerous” short-pitched bowling to an umpire in the Ashes opener but Joe Root has no issues with the treatment dished out to England’s tail. Anderson was one of the tailenders peppered with bouncers throughout the first test in Brisbane, where the ploy worked beautifully for Australia. “I mentioned it to umpire Marais Erasmus but he didn’t think it was too bad,” Anderson told the BBC on the eve of the day-night test that starts in Adelaide today. - AAP

Crane set for debut Legspinner Mason Crane could make his test debut at Adelaide Oval, with England waiting to see how much Moeen Ali’s cut spinning finger heals before settling on an XI. Crane, who impressed so much in Sydney grade cricket last summer that he played for NSW, is being mentored by Stuart MacGill and is highly rated by coach Trevor Bayliss. Blooding the 20-year-old tweaker in the pressure-cooker environment of the day-night clash that starts on Saturday would be a bold call from the tourists, who trail 1-0 in the series. - AAP

Canterbury’s contentious call to sign Ben Stokes for the Ford Trophy has received an unexpected endorsement – from one of the players he could be lining up against over the weekend. Otago allrounder Mark Craig insists that Canterbury made the right call. “Hats off to Canterbury, they’ve obviously looked at an opportunity to boost some ticket sales and he’s one guy that will definitely do that. I think it’s exciting he’s playing and it’s up to Canterbury to take the step that they did. I think for our boys it’s exciting to know you’re playing against arguably the best allrounder in the game.” - NZME

Bigsy leaves an indelible mark on Mid Canterbury rugby Bigsy McLay - In The Zone John McLay with Val Taylor

I

n view of the tragic recent death of John Aitken McLay, this book will serve as a sort of memorial, but not only to him, but the generation of rugby players he represented. Penned by Bigsy himself with a great deal of help from Val Taylor, the book not only tells the story of his rugby career, it reveals his standpoint on life itself, and that was to forever carry a positive mental attitude. As the reader discovers, that attitude assisted him well throughout his rugby life, and also with every other part of his varied and interesting time on this earth. The book is a mish-mash of stories, ideas, people and photographs, relating to all sorts events and happenings, with a single theme running right through it – Bigsy was a good man to have on your side. We learn that no less than Steve Hansen himself urged Bigsy to put his words and philosophies on paper; the All Blacks coach obviously impressed with the attitude shown by this No. 8-turned-prop from little old Mid Canterbury. We hear from plenty of other rugby (and

other) stars and personalities. Grant Perry chimes in with his thoughts, relating how Bigsy was the powerhouse behind the Mayfield forward pack for years, and noting that Bigsy was the Cowboy Shaw of the Mid Canterbury team in their time together. If anyone needed sorting out, Bigsy was the man to do it. The book is dotted throughout with little factoids: quite possibly you weren’t aware that at a Mayfield community event, Bigsy once shore a sheep using scissors! Nowdays when young men are often faced with a choice of ditching one of the two sports they’re really good at, finding out that Bigsy was actively involved in no less than 14 different sports at Lincoln College is an amazing occurrence. The Mighty Men of Mid get some coverage, although I thought maybe they deserved more, but Murray Roulston, possesser of one of the finer rugby minds around, has plenty to say on their time together coaching junior teams in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Bigsy’s mental skills training played a vital part in the successful development of many a young player, and that development often

extended to their lives off the rugby patch. Mid Canterbury rugby legend Jock Ross has plenty to say too, including a fascinating trip down memory lane about how quite a few of the top players indulged in games of Aussie Rules in this town. Bigsy might not have been quite the right shape to be good at that code, but he made up for that with sheer determination to be a winner. That determination, along with the positive mental attitude thing, rubbed off on so many people close to Bigsy, both in his sporting and personal life, and that fact is reflected over and over in this book. May ready to utilise home track By Matt MarkhaM

Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz

Ricky May has built his dynasty based on pulling the right reins at the right time, but the Methven horseman is hoping he’s pulled the right one in tomorrow’s Methven Green Mile. The local legend had the choice of two drives in the Free-ForAll pace worth $17,500 – up and coming pacer A G’s Whitesocks or proven grass track toff Seel The Deal. After some serious deliberation when he was given the choice by trainers Greg and Nina Hope, May opted for the former.

track so you couldn’t really write him off.” From barrier two May and A G’s Whitesocks will bounce from a handy draw and look to settle on the speed. the speed and working into late. They’ll run along a bit too which will help him, without doubt.” May is in for a busy day on his home track with eight drives in the 10 races. He has a big chance to start the day on the right note with Westar Maggie. Also trained by Greg and Nina Hope, the maiden trotter had her rivals in a world of hurt last Sunday at Motukarara before she galloped in the final 100 metres. Other good chances for May at the meeting include Tracksarefortrains, Cullenz Diamond and Precious Sara.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You were blamed for something that wasn’t your fault. Two people in love project things, mistake each other’s identities, see only who they want to see instead of who is actually standing before them. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There is no circumstance or person who is completely on one side of morality. “All human beings are commingled out of good and evil.” – Robert Louis Stevenson GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’re finding out it’s better to have numerous friends than to depend on one person for affection. Tonight you’ll be the star, so dress the part. You’ll enjoy it more when your outside reflects the role. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Those close to you have needs, but you’re not the only one who can fill them. Check in with yourself. Assess what you have to give. The saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll reel in the admirers with your social ease. And as long as you stay aware of other people’s sensitivities and steer clear of them, you’ll keep those admirers. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): A level of detachment will help you achieve the peace you crave. Neutrality helps you recognise the consequences of any action. Often consequences are neither reward nor punishment – just another effect. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Financial exchanges are clean, but there’s something magical about volunteer exchanges that beats a clean deal. Tonight a friend’s introduction will set off a chain of fortuitous events. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’re not sure what someone wants from you, but you know there’s something. Get closer and find out. Extend a social invitation, and let the conversation fly loose and lively. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Just because you’re fortunate (and there are many ways in which you have been blessed) doesn’t mean you’re happy. Normalcy must be breached! Challenge! Change! All are necessary components of joy. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Today you’re more a pen than a pencil. Pencils are creative and flexible, willing to be erased, blended, reworked. Some days you’re like that, but today your moves will be bold – maybe even indelible. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): While the scenario at hand may be very fun, you’re also being assessed inside of it. People are getting to know your style, and they are testing your character by your reaction to freedom and temptation. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Attention-neediness is a turnoff to you. You strive to be selfsufficient emotionally and every other way. Unfortunately, you can’t be. No one is. People need people. The question is, how much?
