Residents are voicing their concerns over the safety and driving behaviour of people at the Belt Road/Middle Road intersection with a number of crashes in the past few weeks, and the council will be taking action to make the intersection more visible.
A resident, who asked not to be named and lives on the corner of the intersection, said he was aware of at least 14 crashes at the intersection in the time he has been living there (since the early 2000s), and has had his fence and vehicle damaged as a result of crashes at the intersection. “In the last 12 months I can think of
at least three and there was even three in one day during the netball season.” He has had his vehicle damaged and said other residents around the intersection had had their fences crashed into at one point or another.

Council elderly housing for shake-up By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Affordable housing for Ashburton’s elderly could be in for some sweeping changes, with a possible sell-off of the Ashburton District Council’s elderly person’s housing stocks. For decades, the cluster of council-owned elderly person’s housing has been self-supporting, with rentals pooled to cover the cost of basic maintenance work. Rents are low by market standards but with increasing maintenance needs on the ageing units, the funding pool is likely to run out within two years. And that has prompted the need for a fresh look at both the way the units are funded and their future ownership, says audit, risk and finance committee chairman Leen Braam. The current model is not sustainable and it doesn’t serve the elderly well, Braam said. “Our elderly persons housing has never been funded properly and to me they have to be taken on by the wider community. Council should be part of it but it needs to be run by another agency, a trust that will have the skills to do this properly and to be totally responsible,” he said. The current housing stocks were

old and many units were ‘basically stuffed’,” he said, with many of the units requiring upgrading. to meet even basic standards Braam said he was passionate about getting a better deal for older people with limited means and while the council couldn’t fix the housing unit issue over night, it needed to start working towards getting the way the units were run and maintained, right.
Currently there are about 100 units in the council’s housing pool, with several no longer able to be let because they do not meet rental property insulation standards. Those vacant properties may be demolished. “We have elderly who need this help and we need to provide it but it needs to be set up as a business and run properly. We need rents that are affordable for people, but

Makeover for crash hot spot
Police investigating vehicle break-ins Police are continuing to make enquiries after receiving 11 reports of vehicle break-ins in one night in Methven. Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins confirmed they had received 11 reports on June 23 from a number of streets in the north-west corner of Methven. “Numerous items were taken from the vehicles, including a wallet and a pair of sunglasses,” he said. “Enquiries are ongoing to establish any links with any other offending reported in other locations.”
the housing doesn’t need to be council run. If we can get other organisations involved who are passionate about it, this will be the best possible outcome.” As a first step in changing the council’s elderly person’s housing model, it is looking at changing the way the units are funded, from self supporting through rent to including an element of rates. The shortfall would also mean a need
to increase rents by an average of $10 a year. In its draft revenue and financing policy for 2021, the council proposes ratepayers contribute between $2 and $90 a year, depending on property value, to the elderly persons housing pool. Braam is hoping this will spark some discussion in the community and generate ideas about the way elderly housing should be managed into the future. “Looking after the elderly is very important but this needs to be done as a community, not a council, even though council will still be part of it and I believe we have to find ways to do this with the community,” he said. He believes the change from council to community management of the housing units could be achieved within three years if there was a willingness to go in that direction. “I’m just hoping through this consultation the ideas will start to flow because the council is just in a holding pattern with this, we’re marking time or going backwards and that means we have to look at something else, someone else to do this better.” Consultation on the council’s draft revenue and financing policy is open until July 26.
Jenkins said police have increased the number of patrols that are taking place in Methven and are actively watching for any more criminal activity involving vehicles. “While police patrols offer community reassurance and crime prevention, we still need members of our community to be vigilant and let us know what’s going on,” he said. Jenkins also urged the public to follow some basic prevention advice to help deter burglars, such as ensuring you do not leave valuables or documents in your vehicle, parking
in well-lit areas, always locking your vehicle, considering having a steering wheel lock for your vehicle. “Make sure you look out for your neighbours and report any suspicious vehicles or people to police, noting down things like number plates and descriptions of people if you can,” he said. “Ensure you take all possible safely precautions regarding your property and vehicles. “If you see a crime being committed or anything suspicious, please call police on 111 immediately.”
From P1 “I’ve had one of my own trucks pranged from someone coming round the corner too fast and there have been multiple fences destroyed,” he said. The man said most of the crashes seemed to occur during the day when there was a higher volume of traffic and more recently, with people travelling south-east down Middle Road failing to give way to traffic. “There is a whole raft of issues, but inattention is the number one thing and speed is number two,” he said. He said he had a few ideas about what could be done at the intersection and had had positive interactions with council recently about getting something done about
the intersection. Ashburton District Council group manager service delivery Neil McCann said the council would be undertaking work to increase visibility of the intersection. “This will involve installing flexible marker posts on the centreline of Middle Road immediately before the intersection and painting the kerb protrusions at the intersection,” he said. McCann said they were unsure why there had been so many issues with the intersection, but they would monitor these changes to see if it made a difference. He said there were no plans to make it a stop sign intersection, instead of a give-way intersection, as there was clear visibility from the intersection, which is the main reason for implementing stop signs.

Distinguished police career ends By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
One of New Zealand’s highest ranking police officers has called time on his career after 42 years, something he, as a bright-eyed 17-year-old from Mayfield, never saw happening. Former Deputy Commissioner of Police Mike Clement officially retired on June 30, 42 years after first joining the police in 1978. Born and raised in Mayfield with a large family of siblings, Clement attended Mayfield Primary School before studying at Ashburton College. With his eyes set on joining the police, Clement worked at Burnett Motors for a year. A week after his 18th birthday he packed his bags and headed off to the old police college based at Trentham Military Base. “We were there in the old World War Two military huts,” he said. “It was in the years proceeding cadet training and I think we were the third wing to graduate after being at the college for a year, instead of 19 months.” Once he graduated, Clement was first deployed in Christchurch, where he would remain for the next 26 years of his career. He climbed through the ranks of the criminal investigations branch in his time in the city but it was a strong grounding on the beat in the early days that he attributes to his policing career. “Back in those days you started out entirely on the beat on foot and work towards getting qualified for a police vehicle,” he said. “The first two years of my career were spent entirely on foot.” Clement remembers his first deployment as a police officer, being shipped down to Timaru to assist with revellers celebrating the New Year at Caroline Bay. “It was quite the happening thing back in those days to head down there, I’m not sure if it is anymore,” he said. “Nothing particularly significant happened, I just remember it as one of the first major things I did as an officer.” The 42-year career was some-

He moved to the CIB in the mid-80s and eventually left 22 years later holding the rank of detective inspector in Wellington,
leaving to re-join the uniformed police as the district commander for Tauranga in 2007. In 2012 he moved into the role of Auckland District Commander. “It was probably a bit odd for a Canterbury boy to be in charge of the Auckland District,” he joked. “I couldn’t even find the police station on my first day there, but it was a great district to work in and I loved it there.” In 2014 he moved back to Wellington and was based out of the National Police Headquarters as deputy commissioner national operations, the role he stayed in till June 30. Speaking to the Guardian on the day, he said he was going through the processes of removing himself from the police life, even down to the simple details of changing his phone number. “I’ve had one phone number

my entire working career,” he said. The role of deputy commissioner saw Clement have responsibility for international and national security, prevention, road policing, response and operations, and investigations, including organised crime. Earlier in his career he worked in the undercover programme and on a number of high-profile major investigations including Operation Austin, the investigation into historical sexual allegations against former and serving police officers. He was the face of the Wakaari/White Island disaster, lead Operation Deans in response to the March 15 terror attacks and the gun buy-back that followed with the Government changing firearms legislation. “There was a big focus on Canterbury with the first buy-back

event held in Riccarton and I am sure there were a large number of people in Mid Canterbury that were affected, through no fault of their own, but would’ve complied and I’m appreciative of that,” he said. While Clement’s career has been built around plans, he leaves Wellington unsure of what is the next step in Operation Life. “I’ve still got a fair bit of family in Mid and North Canterbury, but I’m pretty sure I won’t end up down there, Auckland is our home now and we have two adult children, well adults, our daughters, living with us there,” he said. “For the time being I don’t really have a plan, with Wakaari/ White Island we had our plan to recover the bodies as the next step but when it comes to me, I don’t have a plan, maybe have a break and see what happens.”

In brief
Bilingual tutors boost learning Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
An innovative pilot programme running across several Mid Canterbury schools is boosting learning opportunities for children for whom English is not their fist language. Netherby School principal Phil Wheeler is the driver of a project that sees tutors from Samoa, Tonga and the Philippines work with children who speak very little English. And it’s a project where demand is growing. Wheeler became aware of the need for student language support when he realised there were students in his school who were struggling to achieve because of their limited understanding of the English language. He applied to the Ministry of Education for funding and the pilot programme was born. Three tutors were employed for 10 hours each per week, working in Netherby, Hampstead and St Joseph’s schools. Currently there are 20 students in the programme. “It targets children with low levels of English and who struggle to understand what is happening in their classroom,” Wheeler said. The programme has the ability to expand, to take in the next tier of students, those with some understanding of English but who still find language a barrier to learning, he said. “The children are immersed in English in the classroom and they’ll usually learn it quickly but it still takes about two years.” With the programme still in its infancy, Wheeler said it was very much a case of tutors and the school feeling their way, but the rewards were huge for both students and tutors with every milestone passed. The programme will be evaluated, and Wheeler says he’ll be pushing to see it expanded to ensure a wider reach. Students who had a good foundation in their own language were quick learners of

Ashburton’s branch of ASB has survived both reduced operating hours or closure as the bank reshapes its national business model. On the chopping block are nine branches with another 25 to move permanently to operating just three days of the week from 9am - 4.30pm. The changes will be implemented by August 3. The days of free inner town parking on vacant land on the corner of Havelock Street and Baring Square East are over. The site will be home to the district’s new Ashburton District Council offices and district library and from next week the council will be drilling test bore holes as part of site investigations, which will be used to finalise the detailed designs for the new building. Construction work on the new building is expected to begin at the end of the year.
Hospice fund grows A sponsored spur of the moment bike ride by Tony Todd continues to see its tally of cash rise, several weeks after the event. Todd opted to celebrate his 73rd birthday with the sponsored 73 kilometre bike ride around Ashburton and to date has raised more than $33,000 for Hospice Mid Canterbury.

While children were being encouraged to speak English at school, Wheeler believes it is important they continue to speak their own language at home. Enthusiasm for the programme is high among tutors Molly Asu, Sepi Vea and Thelma Bell. It’s new territory for them, but all say the rewards are huge and that their stu-
dents respond well to learning English with someone who also also speaks their own language. “I just love doing this. Most of the children have some understanding of English but they can’t really speak it,” Vea said. A lot of what the tutors did was provide encouragement and give the students the confidence to speak when they were afraid they might get the words wrong, Asu said. The women say the gains for students come quickly as their confidence grows.

however, the news is not all bad as the recruitment of 150 staff to fill roles that will provide specialist guidance and advice to customers is underway. ASB’s executive general manager Retail Banking Craig Sims said those people would work across its phone, online and branch network responding to customers needing a range of specialist assistance; from Covid-19 related help, to buying a home or planning for retirement.
The changed model had come because Kiwi’s expectations of their bank was changing, he said. “In the past five years, for example, at ASB we’ve seen a 42 per cent decline in branch transactions, and now 85 per cent of our personal customers prefer the convenience of our online and mobile services. Add to that, since lockdown in March, around 13,500 customers have used our digital channels for the first time to do their banking
and they’re continuing to do so,” he said. The branches not reopening have experienced very low number of customers, with some serving only 900 customers a year, so that’s only two to three a day, Sims said. “There is also a branch nearby for customers to use. Our decision is motivated by a desire to provide a better overall personal experience for customers and our people.”
There were no new cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand yesterday for the second day in a row. The total number of confirmed cases remains at 1178, with confirmed and probable cases combined totalling 1528. Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the number of active cases remains at 22.
Not opening to tourists The European Union’s representative in New Zealand says the country won’t have to open up to European tourists in order to be able to travel to the EU. Yesterday, the union announced a list of 14 countries deemed to be “safe”, and whose citizens would be allowed entry from yesterday. The European Union finalised these plans, but Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters yesterday said there would be no reciprocity.
Coffee sales to plunge Global coffee sales are set to plunge this year, due to the impact of Covid-19. A new Rabobank report predicts the demand for beans will drop worldwide by over 1 million bags of coffee and cafes will lose out as people continue to brew their own at home. The new coffee habits formed may reflect a new normal.

■■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT
Mother-in-law hit with chair A incident where a woman hit her mother-in-law with a plastic chair during lockdown over a dispute about the standard of dishwashing, has been referred to restorative justice. Nicola Jayne Jones plead guilty to one charge of assault in a family relationship when she appeared before Judge Dominic Dravitzki in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. On March 22, at around 8am, Jones and her mother-in-law got in to a verbal dispute about dishes not being washed to a standard. When her mother-in-law was turned away from her, Jones picked up a plastic chair and struck her in the back with it, causing her to stumble forwards into a fridge. She suffered a suspected concussion and had headaches lasting up to two weeks, and suffered bruising to her back, right hand, the side of her head and her left shoulder blade. Her lawyer Roz Burnside told the court that the family had moved in together during the lockdown and there was a lot of pressure in the situation at the time, and she admits she did lose control. They are no longer living with the mother-in-law, and Burnside told the court while they are not friends, the situation is civil between the two parties and that there is no ongoing animosity. The matter has been referred to restorative justice prior to sentencing. A man has plead guilty to one charge of assault in a family relationship and three counts of shoplifting in the Ashburton District Court. Shaun Nathan Hurst appeared before Judge Dravitzki on Monday. The assault charge came about after police were called to Hurst’s residence, where he lives with his two brothers and mother, after a dispute over a phone charger. After police arrived he chased his brother into the lounge and struck him three times in a downward motion with a closed fist. The three theft charges resulted
third of subsequent. He was disqualified from driving in the Ashburton District Court on February 4. He was then stopped by police on February 6, after being spotted talking on his phone while driving. He attempted to flee police for a short time before eventually stopping when it then became apparent he was disqualified. Judge Dravitzki fined him $600 and disqualified him from driving for a further 12 months from when his current disqualification ends on October 3. A repeat drunk driver has been convicted of driving contrary to an alcohol interlock licence. Roland Edwards plead guilty to the charge through his lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist. An alcohol interlock sentence was imposed on Edwards in August last year on being convicted of a third or subsequent drink driving charge. On January 1, 2020 he drove to Mobil Ashburton in a Honda and was reported to police due to apparent intoxication. The required interlock device was not fitted to the vehicle. He has been convicted and remanded for sentencing on August 10 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared. from a string of incidents of February 14. At 10.15am Hurst entered Briscoes Ashburton and took a Remington haircut set valued at $69.99 and hid it down the front of his pants and did not attempt to pay for the item. At 11.09am he went to Harvey Norman Ashburton and stole a wifi camera valued at $229.98, which he also hid down the front of his pants. He returned to the store at 12.28pm and took another item of the same type and again left the store without attempting to pay. At 2.34pm he entered Countdown South and filled a basket with grocery items valued at around $56. He went to the checkout area, paid for a loaf of bread but failed
to pay for any other items. Police were called and stopped him in his vehicle and found him with the stolen items. He was convicted and remanded on bail to appear on August 24 for sentencing. A man has been convicted of disorderly behaviour following an incident in Ashburton in March. Robert Wikohika was charged following an incident where he pulled the handbrake in his partner’s vehicle as they were driving, before popping the bonnet of the vehicle and removing electronics that meant the vehicle would not run. The police were called as he was yelling and screaming at his partner, threatening to smash the vehicle. He was fined $400.
An Ecuadorian man has been convicted of drink driving. Francisco Xavier Flores Silva pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess breath alcohol. He was stopped by police in Queenstown driving a Mitsubishi Triton and gave an evidential breath test which returned a result of 533mcg. He told police he had had three drinks and thought he was okay to drive. Judge Dravitzki fined him $400, disqualified him from driving for six months and ordered him to pay court costs of $130. William Frank Robinson was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for a further 12 months after appearing in court charged with driving while disqualified
A man has plead guilty to two charges of stealing petrol and one of driving contrary to an alcohol interlock licence. Cameron Roger Leahy appeared in the Ashburton District Court charged with the offences which occurred on April 6 and May 25. At 7.19am on April 6 Leahy put $20 of petrol into his Toyota motor vehicle and left the Z Curletts Road station without paying. At 9.59pm he put $52.38 worth of petrol in the same vehicle at Z Carmen Road and again left without paying. On May 25 he was stopped by police in Christchurch and was found to be driving contrary to his licence by not driving a vehicle with an alcohol interlock device fitted. He was convicted and remanded to August 24 for sentencing.
■■ HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES
Hororata Highland Games set for 10th anniversary By Jonathan Leask jonathan@selwynapp.nz
The Hororata Highland Games will go ahead this year and celebrate its 10th anniversary on November 7 at the Hororata Domain. It was 10 years ago that the Hororata community came up with an idea to raise spirits after the devastating Canterbury earthquakes and the Hororata Highland Games were born. Now they’re meeting the new challenge of Covid-19 in the lead-
up to the 10-year anniversary, a feat that Hororata Community Trust executive officer, Cindy Driscoll, said hasn’t been easy. “Planning an event with constantly changing Covid levels and guidelines is a challenge but our community has never backed away from a challenge. “A decade ago, we designed the Hororata Highland Games to help our community recover following the Canterbury earthquakes. Now 10 years on, the Hororata Highland Games will once again be a
shining light as we overcome the trials of Covid-19.” The games attract 10,000 people annually to the Hororata Domain and has over 500 competitors in Scottish events including caber toss, highland dancing and pipe band competitions. “We have taken a centuries-old concept, which takes place all over the world and made it our own. We honour the traditions of highland games but we have our own unique twist which comes from our community and a strong
sense of purpose.” The event wouldn’t be what it was without the dedicated crew of around 220 volunteers and Driscoll said the overwhelming support of sponsors and suppliers is what has given the Hororata Community Trust the confidence to move ahead with planning the games this year. “They have been amazing and understand how much events like this contribute to the wellbeing of communities. There is a real feeling from every aspect of ‘we will
do what it takes’ to make the 10th Hororata Highland Games a success in 2020.” In planning the event this year, the trust recognises it will need to be flexible and adaptable. “We are working with our ticketing provider, Eventfinda, and with the New Zealand Event Association to follow the Covid-19 best practice code. “Everything people love about the games will be there, but we’ll be making certain it is safety first,” Driscoll said.

Basic human etiquette beginning to fail I
t came at me like a bolt from the blue. A cough, not petite in presence, but more like one of those walk-into-a-brick-wallat-full-walking-speed coughs. The culprit, an unidentified walker in the Ashburton CBD yesterday morning. A few months ago, this wouldn’t have raised my ire one little bit. Yesterday however, it left me both frustrated and confused as to why all those health-related protocols we put in place in the wake of a global pandemic seemed no longer to be all that important. It’s an interesting situation. As I said, a few months ago it wasn’t a big deal, but it’s funny what being locked at home for weeks on end and constantly being told how to properly cough and sneeze can do for your own outlook on life. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is incredibly conscious of things like that anymore, I often observe people turning around, or away, from people to cough or sneeze now – or lifting an elbow and doing as we were advised to. But over the past few weeks it’s become increasingly more apparent that those who are choosing to still follow those outlined rules are becoming fewer and fewer as time goes by. We yesterday recorded our second straight day of no new cases – hallelujah – we’re back on track. But, there’s every chance it’s only because we’re not looking in the right places and the more people show a clear disregard for the health and safety of others in our community, the more likely it is to return. It’s not hard, in fact it’s quite simple, and a basic common courtesy for your fellow humans. Don’t cough in the face of someone walking towards you. Don’t then put your head down and pretend like it didn’t happen and carry on walking. Be diligent, be thoughtful, be caring. Just because the threat of Covid-19 isn’t there anymore, it’s no good reason to throw out basic manners. We’re all a little bit better than that, I’m sure.

Sacrifice has led to success I
would like to take this opportunity to thank our older population. To thank you for your unity and your sacrifice during the 1-in-100-year global pandemic, Covid-19. I do not underestimate what those sacrifices have meant for our older population. Having to rely on family, friends and neighbours for grocery deliveries and medication pick-ups would not have come naturally to a lot of you, I’m sure. Many of you will be used to living independent lives, and that was certainly restricted during Alert Levels 3 and 4. If it wasn’t for the commitment from our team of five million, we could be living very different lives right now. Through your hard work, we’ve been rewarded with the return to a closer version of normal life following lockdowns and restrictions. During Level 4 myself, and a team of volunteers, made welfare calls to people over 65 throughout the Rangitata electorate. It was heartwarming to hear so many saying that they had their families, or neighbours from across the road, helping them out. We also came across people that were without any support – and it was good to put them in contact with locals whom were willing to provide support. I am not surprised at how our community pulled together at this time – it is the Mid Canterbury

way – when times are tough, we pull together and help each other through. During those conversations, we learned from many that they were happy with the Government’s response to Covid-19. They were happy that we had gone hard and early with our health response, with projections showing that, by staying home, we were saving thousands of lives and hopefully, that by going into lockdown that we would reduce
the risk of second waves of infection and further movements back up through Alert Levels. I’ve heard a lot of feedback about the doubling of the winter energy payment this year – we’ve been treated to some bitterly frosty mornings already, so knowing that the payment has been increased this year to help the elderly ease the burden of being able to afford to keep warm is fantastic. I hope you are enjoying our return to ‘normal life’ – with community sports starting up, events like the A&P show back in the diary and cafes and restaurants bustling again. I hope you are enjoying face-to-face contact as much as I have been. Our plan to combat the virus is working and the results speak for
themselves. And although the global economic consequences of the virus will continue to be a challenge, because of our team effort we are coming out safer and stronger, and in a far better position than numerous other countries. While we are in a safer, stronger position, the path ahead is still challenging. We have a detailed plan to rebuild our country. A plan that keeps people working, gets New Zealand moving, and puts us on a path to growth. It invests in the jobs, people and industries that underpin our future success and sets us up to bounce back stronger and faster. Together there’s a way through: with Budget 2020, projections show unemployment can be back down to normal levels in just two years – and our economy will be growing again as early as next year. Let’s not forget that this is thanks to you. Thanks to you staying home, saving lives, making sacrifices. Thank you Mid Canterbury. Jo Luxton is a Labour list MP. ■■WOOL PRICES
Record low wool prices RNZ Crossbred wool prices have plummeted to new record low levels in the wake of Covid-19, with some farmers receiving less than a dollar a kilogram for their wool. Coarse wool makes up about 85 per cent of New Zealand’s total wool clip, but prices have been low for years. South Canterbury sheep farmer and former Federated Farmers meat and wool chair, Miles Anderson, said the problems facing the sector had been exacerbated further by the coronavirus. Miles Anderson said at the moment returns to farmers didn’t come close to covering the costs of shearing and in some cases, it wasn’t worth sending the wool off farm. “Prior to the lockdown, I’d say we would’ve been averaging around the $2.50 mark for a kilo of fleece wool, since the lockdown we’ve been lucky to get a dollar for a kilo of fleece wool, [which is] well below what it costs to get the wool off the animal.” PGG Wrightson’s South Island wool manager, Dave Burridge, said there was little demand from the overseas mills that usually import New Zealand wool, reflecting the continued fallout from the virus. “We’re certainly seeing some serious headwinds in our industry. To put it bluntly it’s quite depressing, very, very in fact.” Burridge said the challenges facing wool growers were not limited to New Zealand, other wool exporting nations were in similar stife. But what doesn’t help is that the industry here is fragmented, with no governing body representing New Zealand wool growers, and no funding available to properly promote their product.
“It’s been 20 years now since the demise of the New Zealand Wool Board, and I think it would be fair to say that the track record would indicate there’s probably grounds for another conversation to be had, for growers to re-group for their business, because at the end of the day they own their own wool.” A Mackenzie District sheep and beef farmer near Fairlee, Greg Anderson, said the wool prices were frustrating, and he agreed better marketing would play a key part in improving returns.

Ruralco’s Instore Days, which start today, have a new look this year in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, with much of the sales activity going digital. While its three Mid Canterbury stores are open, so members can come during normal store hours, all of the deals are also available online. “We don’t have the big marquee and we are not doing the sit-down lunch either, but we will be doing a sausage sizzle and have some reps in store on Thursday and Friday for those members who want to come in and talk to us,” a Ruralco spokesperson said. The Instore Days are being held from today until July 8. For the past 25 years, the Ashburton-based farmer co-operative has run its popular Instore Days through its three retail outlets in Methven, Rakaia and Ashburton, offering significant discounts to its farmer shareholders. Ruralco chief executive Rob Sharkie said while Covid-19 had changed how Ruralco would run its Instore Days this year, over the lockdown period Ruralco’s retail staff had worked hard to set up the virtual equivalent. Through Ruralco’s website platform, all the deals in this year’s Instore Days will be online, with the same variety and quality shareholders have become familiar with and open to farmers throughout the country.
“We have combined the best of both worlds in this year’s Instore Days celebrations. The digital format sits alongside our traditional catalogue so our team can take orders by phone, email or online through the Ruralco website,” Sharkie said. The Instore Days countdown kicked off on June 1 with every $250 spent with Ruralco Instore Days participating suppliers from then to July 8 enabling members to enter the draw to win a new Ford Mustang car. Any purchases made using the Ruralco card at any of the 90 participating Instore Days suppliers throughout the country will also qualify for the draw. “This year we also have some new participating suppliers, adding even more variety to the farm and home goods and services on offer,” Sharkie said. The $65,900 Mustang promises to be only the first of many prizes offered, with a total of more than $100,000 worth of prizes up for grabs this year. “For Ruralco, the silver lining in the Covid-19 cloud has been the opportunity to really turn our Instore Days into something even bigger and more accessible. At this tough time, they can now benefit an even wider number of our valued members who appreciate Ruralco’s focus on getting the best deal possible for their farming business,” Sharkie said.

■■ Heat a frying pan to moderate-high heat on the stove-top and add half the olive oil. Brown the lamb shanks, turning often to brown all over. Set lamb aside. ■■ Add the remaining oil to the pan and add the onion and garlic. Cook until the onion starts to soften, about 2-3 minutes. Add the thyme, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, tomatoes and carrots, season to taste. Stir well and bring to a gentle bubble then remove from the heat. ■■ Add the sauce to the slow cooker and the lamb shanks on top. It is best to have the bone sticking upwards to ensure the meat is covered by the sauce. Spoon the sauce over any exposed meat. Cover with the lid and cook on low for 8 hours or high for approx 4 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulled from the bone.
■■ Once cooked you may need to thicken the sauce further. You can do this by removing the shanks from the sauce carefully and setting aside, then simmer the sauce rapidly in a saucepan to reduce it. Additionally, you can thicken with a water and flour paste over heat. ■■ Serve shanks and sauce on top of the creamy potato or kumara mash, with a generous side of seasonal greens. Garnish the lamb shanks with fresh parsley. ■■ Oven method: Follow the method as above and using an oven-proof casserole dish cook at 140°C fan bake for 3 1/2 to 4 hours, or until the meat is tender and falling from the bone. ■■ NETBALL
Depth building in ANZ Champ RNZ There’s an assortment of impressive wing attacks in netball’s ANZ Premiership who will put pressure on the Silver Ferns’ incumbents. Gina Crampton has been the favoured wing attack under Dame Noeline Taurua’s watch but three rounds of the ANZ Premiership have shown there are options out there, who all offer something different. WBOP Magic livewire Whitney Souness is not only fast, she can find tight spaces on court. The 24-year-old has nine test caps and was most recently part of the Silver Ferns team that took the Nations Cup in England in January. She has a wide range of passes and can jimmy her way into all kinds of gaps. The Northern Mystics’ Elisapeta Toeava has always shown plenty of flair but has lacked consistency. Going off her first three performances in the revised ANZ Premiership, this could be the season she consolidates her natural talents. Logically you would think that at just 161cm she would struggle against tall wing defenders, but her speed is good enough to get around the best of them. Toeava picked up her one and only test cap early in Dame Noeline’s coaching tenure in 2018. Toeava is very quiet off the court and that could be her downfall. At the Silver Ferns’ level it’s expected that team-mates be direct with each other and give

Grace Kara is looking fit after taking a year out of netball to have her first child. Kara was part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games team that failed to medal on the Gold Coast. When Dame Noeline took the Silver Ferns’ coaching reins, the 63-test veteran was left out and didn’t even make any of Netball New Zealand’s wider national squads. Kara’s strength is her ability to control the tempo of
the attacking end and she offers obvious experience but maybe not the same punch as some of her counterparts. Pulse wing attack Maddy Gordon has been hugely impressive in only her second season in the ANZ. The fact that she’s more accustomed to wing defence and centre shows she’s got an excellent netball brain for someone so young. The 20-year-old is very quick and looks like she’s got time out on court. If she passes the Silver Ferns’ fitness require-

ments, she could get a chance as soon as this year. Tactix wing attack Erikana Pedersen picked up one Silver Ferns’ test cap in late 2018. Pedersen is a reliable, calm player, but might not possess the same raw power as some of her competition. Her Tactix teammate Kimiora Poi mostly wears the centre bib, but could also be considered an option at wing attack, where she spent most of her time during her stint in Australia last year.
■■ SEVENS RUGBY
NZ claims both world sevens titles New Zealand has been awarded the men’s and women’s World Sevens Series titles after World Rugby cancelled the remainder of the season because of the coronavirus outbreak. Tournaments in London, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong were cancelled on the men’s tour, while the women’s circuit lost rounds in the United States, Paris and Hong Kong. “While it is very disappointing for players, fans, organisers and everyone involved, the health and wellbeing of the rugby community and wider society remains the number one priority,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said. “These difficult decisions have been taken following detailed consultation with our union partners and in line with advice from the various government and public health agencies around the world.” The All Blacks men’s team claim a 13th title after winning three of the six rounds that were completed before the spread of Covid-19 forced the suspension of all major sport around the world. South Africa finished 11 points back in second place with 2019 champions and Olympic gold medallists Fiji third. The Black Ferns women’s team had looked well on their way to a second successive title, and a sixth in eight years of the circuit, with four tournament triumphs in five rounds before the coronavirus shutdown. Australia, which will defend its Olympic title in Tokyo next year, was second and Canada third.
New Zealand players perform the haka after defeating Australia during the final at the Canada Sevens rugby tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. The rest of the series has been cancelled and New Zealand declared winners of the men’s and women’s titles. PHOTO AP New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson congratulated the teams on their achievement. “While this probably isn’t the way the teams would have liked to claim the series titles, it is a reflection of the impressive form they were in and their consistent performances throughout the season. “It is a real credit to all players and the wider management for the work they were doing in the build up to the Tokyo Olympics, and I’m sure they will pick up where they left off
when they reassemble later in the year,” said Robinson. There will be no finals for the new second-tier challenger series this year, World Rugby said, and therefore no promotion to, or relegation from, the top tiers. “As a result of these amendments, seedings for the Tokyo Olympic Games will be adapted to include results from the 2021 series to ensure they provide the most robust and accurate representation of current form,” World Rugby said.
Methven and Collegiate pushed their way to the top of the table in Mid Canterbury Senior B rugby in the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy after they recorded strong wins last weekend. Both have picked up two wins from the opening two rounds of the rapid-fire competition for this season and now sit firmly in the box seat to push for higher honours come the end of the season. At Rakaia, Collegiate had to fight hard to get their victory over a plucky Rakaia side with the match finishing up at 19-17 to the visitors. Further down the road in Methven, the locals came out on top of a see-saw match against Celtic. Methven scored within the opening minute of the game, but Celtic bounced right back and scored themselves almost a minute later and they see-sawed for the remainder of the match. Methven’s backline boasted a number of former and current representative players including Nete Caucau and Davey Maw along with the Lock brothers, Sam and Chris. Celtic put the challenge to them though and for most of the game were right in it although the scoreline blew out late with Methven winning 41-24. The other match of the round resulted in Allenton getting their season under way with a 31-12 win over Southern at Hinds. This week the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup is back on the line after holders Mt Somers enjoyed the bye last weekend. They host country neighbours Southern and look to make it two wins from two matches. Celtic will play host to Rakaia in another match while Collegiate and Allenton will lock horns at Collegiate. In colts action from the weekend, the Methven and Rakaia combined side lost to Springston 19-24 in a tight match while Celtic and Southern Combined picked up a win by default in their match against Lincoln University. This weekend Methven/Rakaia heads to Dunsandel to take on BDI while Celtic’s match against Lincoln has already been listed as a default.

■■ NETBALL
ACL Premier 1 returns to the courts The Mid Canterbury Premier Netball season begins tonight at the EA Networks Centre. Guardian sports reporter, Adam Burns delves into the teams as they look to start on the right foot tonight. Celtic out to return to the throne Is this the year in which Celtic reclaims its throne? One of the big guns of the ACL Premier 1 competition, Celtic endured some tough times in 2019 after a few years of dominance in the championship. A run of injuries culminated in a few losses during last year’s campaign. The side, however, regrouped to make the final after top-
pling Hampstead in the semis but would succumb against a talented College outfit in last year’s big dance. Celtic can make reparations straight off the bat in 2020, facing off with the 2019 premier victors in a highly anticipated rematch tonight. “We’ll be looking to right the wrong of the final last year,” coach Angela Leadley said.
She added it was a match-up which the squad always looked forward to. “Their style of game really suits us. It’s a game we really enjoy playing. “I’m sure Kaye (College coach) will have them well prepared.” Although readressing last year’s 34-27 loss in the final is an undeniable motivating fac-
tor for the Celtic contingent, the Covid-related lag to begin the season had also spurred the group’s drive for action. “Lockdown has probably made them a lot more keener to be out there,” Leadley said. The core of last year’s squad are back in the mix this year, with a couple of players also returning from maternity-enforced layoffs.
College with the target on their back College knows better than most that backing up from previous years’ success is no easy task. The team clinched its first Premier 1 title in almost a decade in 2019 and the side has no time to build into this year’s shortened competition, facing off with a Celtic side eager to put the side on notice. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said this year was inevitably about “rebuilding”. “Of course we lose kids to university and jobs,” she said.
“This year we’ve also lost some to other schools in Christchurch.” The squad however retain the services of some key competitors including Poppy Kilworth, Taylah Burrowes and shooter Hayley Tallentire. Despite the uncertainty during lockdown, the group had kept its motivation levels high. The team has been training twice a week for just over a month in preparation. “They’re coming along really good and improving more and
more,” Kennedy said. For some of the young members of the College line-up, it would be their first foray into top level netball in what is set to be a significant lift in intensity. College will also be boosted with the inclusion of local basketball star Sophie Adams – taking her opportunity following greater cross-code collaboration in the post-Covid sporting landscape which Kennedy describes as an “exciting” prospect.
With other secondary school events shelved in 2020, the ACL Premier competition now serves as the pinnacle of the College season. Kennedy said the most important factors were the fact that some netball could at least be played and further developing some of the squad’s young up-and-comers. “It’ll be tough to repeat the fantastic season which we had last year. “We’re just looking at it in a different way.”
Spirit the key for Hampstead Hampstead will be wanting to channel a similar lionhearted spirit this year after its A team scrapped its way to the ACL business end in 2019. Head coach Cindy Meadows returns to the Premier fold as she prepares her side to meet United A this evening. “I’ve been around a while,” she said.
Methven out to improve fortunes Methven’s top team will be striving to improve on its fortune’s from last year. With experienced shooter Leanne Clemens out of action for much of last season, the side battled on court. The team narrowly avoided relegation courtesy of a last gasp clutch goal by Emma-Lake Hill in a promotion/relegation thriller against Southern A. Clemens is set to return for this year’s campaign in a welcome addition to the Methven playing stocks. Sarah Stoddart will again be a key operator for the Methven outfit. “We’ve got some good players returning,” coach Greta Currie said. “But we’ve got a good mix of players who have been there for a number of years and some who are brand new to the area and brand new to the club.” “We’ve also got some school girls who have come through the Methven system and have come up to prem this year which is exciting for them.” Echoing the sentiments of its ACL premier rivals, the team was excited to get back out on court following months of an
The team will be made up of a mix of exciting fresh faces and experienced campaigners making a return to the court including Hannah Spence and Alice Eddington. Seasoned heads Nicole Hands (nee Ferguson) and Jemma Stoddart will also be integral to the sides prospects. A focal point for the team
unknown future. Currie admitted there was an element of the unknown and it was hard to predict what was in store until the team hit the ground running. Tonight the side meet Mt Somers in its opening round clash.
Mt Somers just do what they do Mt Somers’ A side has the benefit of retaining the majority of its tried and true squad as it sets off for its third campaign. The club, which first joined Premier netball in 2018, will again rely on a core eight although, as is the case with community sport, they need to balance squad members commitments outside of netball. “The way we operate, most of us girls have played together in previous netball teams,” player/coach Kate Oliver said. “We’re just a group of mums who don’t tend to practice a lot, we just have a rolling team of about 12 because of our commitments with family. “We just do what we do.” That’s not to dispel the team’s competitive edge which permeates the squad come
and coaching staff, particularly during the initial stages of the competition, will be its full court defence as opposition teams are set to be forced to grind to work the ball into the circle. Although Hampstead’s defensive clout is getting plenty of work, the side is giving scrutiny to its execution with
game day. It meant the combinations which took to the court were an unknown element, however there was a factor of the tried-and-true which serves the Mt Somers side well. Oliver said the feelings were high among the camp following a training run against Southern last week. “We’re looking forward to it,” she said. “We enjoy the competitiveness of it but we also enjoy the social aspect that we bring. “Our aim is to stay in the top grade, turning up and playing competitive netball, which is what we want to continue to do.”
United turn the focus to fun United A began its 2019 campaign in Premier 2, but fought its way back to the top for round two. The team were steeled for action as it went through the second round only to be pipped by eventual winners College A in the grand final
qualifier. It is no wonder the team are itching to get back into the swing of things. “”We were ready to go in February,” coach Claire Tappin said.
ball in-hand. “Capitalising on our passoff basically and making sure we put the ball through the hoop every time we get our opportunity. “Just going out there and making sure we’re doing the basics right and having some fun along the way.”
However a change in mindset has been a key for the side following Covid, where match results only counted for so much. “We came out of lockdown with the idea that this season needed to be about fun. “It’s been a difficult year for a lot of people in a lot of ways. “It’s that mixture of you cant wait for it to start but at the same time feeling slightly cheated.” Ironically though, there is a mutual acknowledgement from the playing group that the team will be having fun if they are successful. “They are out to win. “They’ll be enjoying themselves if they’re having success.” The United girls were aided by a strong team camaraderie during a challenging lockdown period. As far as playing personnel, the team boasted a cross-section of experience. Although both Senior and B squads lost a pair of players pre-season in what was a blow to the club. However it had been boosted by the acquisition of impressive defender Sammy Holden from College who will combine with Abi Lunn in the defensive third. Solidifying its combinations will be the brief for United as they take to the court against Hampstead tonight. “We’ll work out how we’ll play round two from there.”

Warriors give NRL family deadline The Warriors told NRL bosses Peter V’Landys and Andrew Abdo on Saturday that they had until July 19 to make progress with getting exemptions for families to join them. If the NRL could not deliver, Warriors interim coach Todd Payten said any players wanting to leave the Warriors’ Central Coast base to return to New Zealand were free to do so. “There was a lot of talking. In the end we basically told them that they’ve got 23 days at that moment to get it sorted,” Payten said. “If they didn’t get any clarity or give our lads a definite answer, they will be able to go home the day after the Sharks game.” Players were told the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Victoria had not helped the club’s cause in getting trans-Tasman travel clearance. Payten said they were aware that their applications were among many the government authorities had to look at, but V’Landys had promised to take their cause “higher up the

Payten said he has compiled a wishlist of loan players. “It’d be idiotic to leave it until they go and then get caught with our pants down,” Payten said. “There’s a list being looked at daily. If we haven’t heard anything within a week, we’ve got to, I guess, push down that path a little bit further.” Payten said the remaining members of the squad were committed to staying and would “dig in”. Prior to leaving for Australia nearly two months ago, the players had only agreed to make the move if the NRL could assure them that their families would be able to be based in Australia too.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Many daily decisions seem insignificant. But for those few choices that seem to define you as a person, you’re not willing to compromise, and for good reason. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): No one knows exactly where the state line is until they look at a sign or a map. Boundaries are theories until someone puts up a sign or a gate or a wall. A boundary isn’t really a boundary unless enforced. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): As with poetry and other expressions, you don’t have to know what a thing means to be moved by it, or healed by it, even. You’re open to mysterious creative forces in whatever form they come to you. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): With your attention pulled by recent developments, it may be hard for you to concentrate. Devote yourself to the tedious and necessary parts. You’ll be most productive while mentally processing life. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): For most people you know, the term “friendly competition” is a descriptor, not an oxymoron. Somecannot be sporting. It’s against their nature – every game is war. Recognise and avoid them today. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Don’t worry about starting things off on the right foot. Just lean forward and see which foot sticks out to prevent your fall. That’s what progress is -- a precarious tilt; catch yourself; right yourself; repeat. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Why do you like the hard challenges? They practically demand you grow stronger. You want to be a force of nature, not a victim, acted upon by other forces of nature. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Picking the right theme for conversation is not just a key to successful visits or dates; it’s a signal of health and well-being. It is easier to thrive when you are focused on subjects that are uplifting and energising. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You have your choice of routes today. As a rule, the bendy roads are more exciting and dangerous. None can see around the curve. How comfortable are you with uncertainty? CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve a certain mark to hit. Align short-term and long-term goals. As always, it’s better to do it right the first time, even if it takes a little longer, than to have to do it over later. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Someone gives you undivided attention and places the focus exactly where it matters most to you. A case could be made that this is the definition of love. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The day is marked by a resilient spirit of independence that has you preferring your own company, keeping your own council, deciding for yourself without worry or need of any outside reassurance.

CARTER COUNTRY
Former All Black great, Dan Carter, will make a surprise appearance for his home club, Southbridge, this weekend. PHOTO SUPPLIED
Canterbury country rugby will gain a significant publicity boost this weekend when former All Black great, Dan Carter, steps out for his home club of Southbridge. As Carter’s Super Rugby Aotearoa side the Blues head into the weekend with the bye, Carter has jumped at the opportunity to return back home and play for his former club, adding some real firepower to a blockbuster top-ofthe-table clash with West Melton
in the Coleman Shield competition. There are a number of Mid Canterbury links to the story with Southbridge’s usual firstfive, Sooaémalelagi, residing and working in Ashburton and another local lad, Vinnie Neumann, a member of the West Melton side. Neumann will miss the match after suffering a head knock last week which has him on the sidelines for three weeks.
Carter is yet to take to the paddock for the Blues this season and hasn’t played a game of rugby for the past seven months, but did hint during an interview during his side’s victory over the Highlanders on Saturday night that his return to Super Rugby might only be a matter of weeks away. “The last three weeks have been pretty intense training … gradually building up my contact and getting my confidence back
NZ claims both world sevens titles
for playing again, so a bit of club rugby would be good,” Carter told Newshub on Tuesday night. The two-time Rugby World Cup winner last appeared for Southbridge in 2014, as he worked his way back to fitness for the Crusaders. Prior to that was in 2009, when he played his first game in six months after rupturing his achilles during his stint with Perpignan in France. Over 2000 spectators turned up
that day, setting new clubroom heights for beer consumption. It is another boon for the club after Carter sold his 70th cap All Black jersey on Trademe for $21,300 and donated the proceeds to Southbridge. As for West Melton, they’re not without international flavour either with New Zealand Sevens representative Sam Dickson stepping out for them in the first game of the season.
