The council plans to change the lake settlement from a rural to an urban rating area and that has raised the ire of residents who say they will be paying twice for what will be essentially the same services. Property owners already each pay about $360 a year to the Lake Hood

Aquatic Park Trust into a pool that covers the annual cost of maintaining the Lake Hood environment. The property fee, also paid by the Lake Hood Extension Project owners comes to $304,000. The council contributes $146,000 a year to this fund. Yesterday several submitters spoke to councillors about the proposed rating change and all said that what was planned was not fair. What would be fair, John Skevington said, would be if the council paid 80 per cent of the costs, or $350,000, leav-

ing $90,000 for residents, which would equate to about $50 per property. “The huge rate increases proposed by the council are both unfair and totally unacceptable when taken in context with the many projects undertaken and funded by locals and maintained by locals for the wider community’s use,” he said.

BMC wants a new heart for CBD By Sue NewmaN

Ideas ranging from pedestrian-only streets and angle parking to weekend trading and establishing the district’s identity were ideas floated at a town centre revitalisation meeting in Ashburton yesterday. The meeting called by Business Mid Canterbury (BMC) saw business owners throwing around ideas they believed would kick the central business area back into life. It was a meeting that identified the issue had been left to lie for too long and that action was needed before the town’s heart died. Neil Pluck suggested Ashburton could become “Riccarton Mall with the roof off”. His vision was for angle parking both sides of East Street and on Cass Street, pedestrian only areas on Burnett and Tancred Street and a vibrant business heart in the middle. This would see the blocks bounded by Havelock and Tancred Street become the town centre. “This is about us as a community taking a lead. We have to be seen to be doing something for ourselves before we take anything to the council; we can’t just keep grizzling to council,” he said. One of the major issues in Ashburton was the lack of co-ordination on trading hours, one retailer said. “We need to open longer hours and we need to be unified if we do something like opening on Sundays. Even at Christmas

we’re not all united on this.” BMC board member Nicole Jackson suggested the longer shopping hours could be trialled for six weeks to three months and then evaluated. They could be well promoted both within the district and in Christchurch and Timaru, she said. Those retailers who did open on Sunday were frequently asked what else was open; people were in town looking for something to do and opportunities were lost because

very few shops were open, several retailers said. Ashburton desperately needed to find an identity that spelled out very clearly what it was about, Bob McDonald said. “Our identity is staring us in the face – agriculture,” Chris Redmond replied. The Saturday farmers’ market was something that could be developed and expanded and perhaps moved to the East Street green, he said.

Visitors to town were frequently heard saying the town centre looked like sh.., but the big box area looked tidy, Redmond said. “We have shitty trees in terrible boxes and they need to be bulldozed. We realise there is a lot of building work to go on in the town but there must be some way to tidy up the streets.” He also suggested the empty information site could become an inner town police kiosk to enhance inner town safety at night. There were also concerns about the impact on the town centre once buildings that needed earthquake strengthening work carried out were identified. Some feared there would be more demolitions and more empty spaces opening up. “Some are seriously worried if they can’t afford to fix it, it comes down and leaves another hole,” Pluck said. The retailers agreed that they needed to collate ideas raised and that they needed to commission experts to come up with town centre development concepts. And those concepts needed to come from someone outside the district with fresh ideas, one retailer said. “The streetscape needs to come up to the century we’re living in,” he said. The business owners have formed a sub committee to work through the development ideas and to look at the where to now.

Councillors back rates rise for Lake Hood From P1 For the council to suggest an increase in rates of 37 per cent while it only funded $146,000 of the $450,000 annually required to operate the lake was both unfair and poorly advised, because it was a significant landowner, Skevington said. The council owns the lake and large areas of reserve land as well as a small number of residential sections. “It’s time the council recognised Lake Hood as the significant asset to our district that it is,” he said. The Lake Hood Charitable Trust gifted the lake and reserve land valued at $11 million to the council about eight years ago, to ensure it remained in community hands. Resident Graham Kennedy suggested that if the council changed

Lake Hood to an urban rating area, it could look at paying 80 per cent of the cost of maintaining the lake and reserve land. In return the charitable trust could reduce the levy property owners paid from $360 to $50. It was unfair to residents that the council put rates up by 37 per cent and continue to pay just $146,000 in maintenance costs, he said. “Residents just want a fair and reasonable outcome and my proposal I believe is fair and reasonable; however your original proposal is neither fair nor reasonable.” There were 131 submissions made on Lake Hood’s rating changes, 52 per cent in support. When councillors deliberated on those submissions they had

three choices – abandon the proposal and leave Lake Hood rated as rural, stick with the proposed change to make Lake Hood an urban rating area or amend the proposal and look at either a differential rate or a staged approach to the change. Initially councillors Lynette Lovett and Diane Rawlinson wanted lifestyle blocks left out of the rating change but their fellow councillors believed Lake Hood should be treated as urban. While the resident levy was an issue, it was a separate issue to the change in rating area, council business services manager Paul Brake said. Councillors couldn’t tie a rate increase into a decrease in the resident levy, that was outside council’s control, he said.

“The only way this will change is if you try to negotiate with the trust and say we’ll increase our levy to $300,000 if you decrease the levy.” The Lake Hood situation was complicated and there were layers on layers of events that had occurred over time that were part of the complex issues that were part of the development today, he said. As a general principle, because so many people living down there found the situation confusing, whatever the council did it needed to go in with the aim of unpicking the complexity and making it simpler, councillor Selwyn Price said. “I still have no idea of who owns what. Let’s try and unpick this mess.” With so many submissions made, councillor Stuart Wilson

said the council couldn’t ignore what people were saying. “If we do that, they’ll say the council doesn’t listen. I’d like to see some sort of compromise.” We have listened, mayor Donna Favel said, but that didn’t necessarily translate into compromise. Russell Ellis wanted the council to take a halfway step – increase the amount it paid to $300,000, increase rates by half the proposed amount next year and follow up with a second increase in the following year. Councillors, however, opted to stick with their original plan to rate Lake Hood as an urban area, but Favel said that decision would be the first step in untangling what was already out there. It was an indicative decision that did not take into account the levy.

Opera stars take Ashburton break By SuSan SandyS

International opera star Simon O’Neill is aiming to put on his best performing voice when he stars in Tosca next week. Ashburton is O’Neill’s home town and he visited with fellow international opera star Orla Boylan this week. The pair play lead roles in New Zealand Opera’s Tosca, which will stage at the Theatre Royal in Christchurch on March 8, 10, 14 and 16. O’Neill said the Tosca performance was particularly important to him, as he wanted to make it up to Mid Cantabrians after not being able to sing at a local fundraiser due to laryngitis last year. “It was really upsetting not being able to sing for Ashburton people,” O’Neill said, referring to Night of the Southern Stars at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Performing for a home audience was highly important to him. “I get more nervous performing here in Ashburton or Christchurch than I do in New York or Milan,” he said. And the distress had not stopped at Night of the Southern Stars, as his voice did not return for a whole month. “I thought ‘it’s over’, I had nothing for one month.” The illness had come on the back of a gruelling schedule including the Edinburgh International Festival and The Proms in London, and O’Neill reflected it had perhaps been his body telling him enough. However, O’Neill is more than back into the swing of things again. His last production was in New York City at the weekend, singing with the New York Philharmonic, and the weekend before he was in Sweden. Based in Auckland, he is generally on a plane for 20 or so trips to England and America per year. He travels business class and generally has a couple of glasses of champagne each flight. Last weekend when travelling between Los Angeles and New York, he was talking to the “tall and

and often star together in productions throughout the world. The pair starred in the big Italian opera of Tosca when it was last staged by New Zealand Opera in 2015, and were looking forward to bringing it to the stage in Christchurch again.

Mt Somers store targeted by burglars By Katie todd

The Mt Somers General Store has become the latest victim in a spate of organised rural burglaries. The Pattons Road premises were broken into in the small hours of Wednesday following eight other petrol station and dairy burglaries in Canterbury since January 26, which police

believe to be linked and targeted. Police reported the Mt Somers General Store’s alarm was triggered at around 1.20am on Wednesday, after thieves smashed a window. Nothing was taken but police said a forensic examination has been carried out and enquiries are ongoing. Senior Sergeant Peter Stills said police are investigating a

number of other rural burglaries where a vehicle has been used to gain entry to a shop and cigarettes have been taken. He said a stolen ute is believed to be involved in the majority of the burglaries, which have occurred at dairies and petrol stations in Dunsandel, Fairlie, Geraldine, Cave, Hororata, Glentunnel, Leeston and Mt Somers. CCTV footage shows four peo-

ple heavily disguised with their faces completely covered. Police are working with dairy owners and shopkeepers in the areas, and an investigation is under way locally and district wide. “This type of offending causes significant harm to business owners and communities and Police are working hard to hold those responsible to account,” Stills said.

The Ashburton District’s economy grew 2.3 per cent for the December quarter, well above the Canterbury growth rate of 1.9 per cent with its GDP now sitting at $1949 million. Data provided by Infometrics shows that the district’s economy continues to strengthen from its soft path in late 2016, with the December quarter the strongest for 12 months. Consumer spending and renewed confidence among the farming community have been credited with the improved economic growth. Total dairy payout for the 2016/2017 season is estimated to be $912 million and is expected

to be $41.7 million higher this season at $954 million. The economic monitoring body also threw its weight behind proposals to develop State Highway One to four lanes, saying this would bolster spending and jobs over the short to medium term. Government plans to focus on rail and public transport, however, could undermine this potential, it warned. Four laning the highway could be given greater urgency given the district’s traffic flow increased by 1.9 per cent in the last quarter, compared to the national increase of 1.6 per cent. As a region, Canterbury’s traffic increased 2.1 per cent. While the district was hard hit by the closure of the Silver Fern’s

Fairton works mid-year, rises in employment in other industries such as agriculture and forestry had offset these. And that meant the district continued to hold its low unemployment rate, 2 per cent, compared to 3.9 per cent for Canterbury and 4.7 per cent, New Zealand. International net migration for the year to December 30 was 134, up from 124 the previous year. The district’s housing market was described as ‘flat’ by Infometrics noting that the fall in residential building consents (down 21 per cent for the year) indicated the district did not need extra, new housing. House prices were virtually unchanged, while they in-

creased 3.9 per cent for New Zealand as a whole. Retail trade grew by 2.8 per cent locally and 4.3 per cent nationally and while car registrations were up 6.7 per cent, (less than the national average) commercial vehicle registrations were up 26 per cent, well above the national average of 16 per cent. When it came to tourism expenditure, at 0.06 per cent the district lagged well behind Canterbury, 5.5 per cent and New Zealand, 6.4 per cent. Ashburton’s GDP growth peaked at 8.2 per cent in September 2012, unemployment at 3.3 per cent in September 2011, the value of non-residential consents at $75 million in December 2013.

Teen car thief crashes into pregnant woman’s car Two teenagers fleeing police rammed a stolen car into a pregnant woman’s vehicle north of Auckland on Wednesday. The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution. A 14-year-old driver and an 11-year-old passenger the police on a chase along the Southern Motorway and onto the Northern Motorway after Counties Manukau police tried to stop a stolen vehicle in Manurewa.

Rodney Area Commander Inspector Bruce O’Brien said police cars pulled back and the Eagle helicopter monitored the fleeing vehicle until road spikes were deployed north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnels. The pregnant woman tried to stop to avoid the spikes but the offending vehicle drove into the back of her car. O’Brien said it was distressing that an innocent member of the

community was caught up in the chase. “She was taken to North Shore Hospital and thankfully both she and her unborn child are okay,” he said. “This has understandably caused a lot of stress to her and her family.” O’Brien said police are supporting the victim and her family and he had visited them in hospital. Two teenage offenders were

apprehended shortly after the crash at 2.18pm. The 11-year-old was returned home and referred to Youth Aid, and the 14-year-old appeared in the Youth Court yesterday on charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, reckless driving causing injury, burglary, escaping custody and failing to stop. A criminal investigation and an internal investigation have been launched. - NZME

New Zealand’s universities have continued to place among the best around the globe. The annual QS World University Rankings by Subject compares academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations and impact. NZ’s universities placed in the Top 50 institutions for 32 subjects, four more than in 2017. Of those, 18 are taken by the University of Auckland. Eight of NZ’s universities are ranked, with a total of 175 departments featured across the 48 tables. The most-ranked universities are the University of Auckland, which is ranked in 40 disciplines, and the University of Otago, which is ranked in 33. Fire sparks charges A man is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court in relation to cannabis plants allegedly found at a property during a fire service callout. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said Tauranga firefighters were called to a fire in the Lower Kamais yesterday after receiving several calls about a blaze about 11.40am, including reports a house was on fire. However, when firefighters arrived, it was burning vegetation, a fence and the exterior of a shed, she said. A police communications spokeswoman confirmed as firefighters took control of the fire, cannabis plants were allegedly found. She said a man would appear in Tauranga District Court relating to a small number of cannabis plants allegedly found growing at the property. - NZME

English bows out Former prime minister Bill English has marked the end of his 27-year career in parliament with a valedictory speech laced with cheerful anecdotes and a message about the importance of compassion. His 45-minute speech to a packed debating chamber and its public galleries ranged over his early life in rural Dipton to the rigours of politics in opposition and in government. His wife Mary and their six children were there to hear it. Schools drop lawyers All six of New Zealand’s law schools have cut ties with Russell McVeagh in the wake of a series of accusations that paints a culture of sexual harassment as rife within the firm. AUT, Waikato, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago universities all said they had temporarily banned any Russell McVeaghrelated events. Yesterday, the University of Auckland’s Dean of Law Professor Andrew Stockley told staff and students its relationship with the firm was “on hold” for the rest of the year. The shape of Ashburton’s next district councillor line-up will shortly be in the hands of the community. Later this year residents will have an opportunity to decide whether or not we need fewer councillors to run the district. The current council team has already decided numbers should drop from 12 to nine, putting Ashburton in line with most other local authorities of its size. With 12 councillors, the district was the most heavily represented in New Zealand, per capita. In December, councillors voted

10 to three (councillors Selwyn Price, Mark Malcolm and Thelma Bell opposed) to reduce their number to nine. They also voted to retain the

three ward system, but reduced Ashburton councillor numbers from seven to five, eastern ward from three to two and left the western ward unchanged at two.

Some minor ward boundary changes were approved. This month, council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said the council would undertake a preconsultation survey on the proposal. What will then be known as an initial proposal will be signed off by the council on May 17 and submissions will open for the community to have a say. If there are no objections a final proposal on councillor numbers will be publicly notified, but if there are objections, a hearing will be held. If appeals are lodged, the Local Government Commission then becomes involved.

A growing number of students may be turning up to school without lunch – but it’s breakfast that remains the number one problem, says Allenton School principal Graham Smith. Charities have reported increasing demand for food assistance, with KidsCan now dishing out food supplies to 30,000 children at one in every four schools around the country – the highest demand they have seen in three years. In Mid Canterbury, a number of schools are handing out lunchtime snacks from the school office or provided by other parents, however, breakfast is the most urgent issue to tackle, Smith said. “I don’t think anything is as important as breakfast, if they’re going to do any work throughout the day,” he said. Several schools around the district have now established freeof-charge breakfast clubs to cater to the increasing number of children in need of a free meal, including Ashburton Borough School, Ashburton College, Netherby School and Ashburton Intermediate, along with more than 40 other schools around Canterbury. While Allenton School had also informally offered food to students in need, Smith said he had encountered some “frustrating” problems. “We do have cereals available to those who need it and we used to even have muesli – but we were finding children didn’t actually want it,” he said. “They wanted things like pies instead, because when they did have breakfast that’s what they were used to … I found that a bit frustrating, to be honest.” Now, he said, if they had to provide food to students, cornflakes seemed to be the best option. At schools such as Netherby, staff offer Weet-bix and milk through sponsorship from Sanitarium and Fonterra as part of the KickStart programme. The KickStart programme is in place at more than 944 schools nationwide.

“Mesmerising river made entirely of rock created when cyclone hits mountain.” That is the headline on YouTube given to a video taken by Methven area residents Donna Field and son Joe Todhunter. The video is of a river of rocks flowing down a neighbouring Rakaia Gorge high country station, in the aptly named Terrible Gully, leading to the formation of a shingle fan. Field said yesterday she had been surprised by the huge response to the video, which she posted on her high country station Cleardale Facebook page following Cyclone Gita, where it has since had more than 395,000 views. The video shows a river of rock that she and Todhunter happened upon when checking out potential flooding in the area following Cyclone Gita last month. She said the spectacle was not only amazing visually, but it had also been associated with a “huge noise” of rocks crunching together. She had since been approached by individuals and organisations wanting to share the video, including a YouTube distribution

UK explosion arrests Three men in their 30s have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the explosion on Sunday night which killed five people, Leicestershire Police said yesterday. In a statement, the force said: “Police investigating the cause of the explosion and fire in Leicester on February 25 have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter. “The three men, all in their 30s, have been arrested in the last hour and are being questioned by detectives. “One man comes from East Anglia, the second from the North West of the country, and the third from the East Midlands. No further details will be released about these individuals at this stage. “We acknowledge that the terrible events of Sunday night in Hinckley Road have attracted significant public, political and media interest.” They reiterated that there was no evidence the events were terrorist related. The five people missing, and feared dead, include Mary Rajoobeer, 46, and her two sons Shane, 18, and Sean, 17, who lived in the flat above the Zabka supermarket which was completely destroyed. Shane’s girlfriend Leah Beth Reek, 18, and shop worker Viktorija Ljevleva, 22 are also missing. Five more people remain in hospital, one of whom has serious injuries. - PA

Leave your phone at home Donald Glover is bringing his Childish Gambino concert experience Pharos to New Zealand in November. Announced on his app Pharos, and in Vanity Fair, Pharos will be a three-day camping event running near Auckland from November 23-25. No location has been announced yet, but information on the Pharos app says one will be announced soon. Pharos is described as a series of immersive, virtual reality live dome performances, at which new music will be featured. Glover first performed the show at Joshua Tree, California in 2016, performing inside a VR dome in the desert. Punters were asked to seal their phones in bags.

Trump talking tough on NRA Putting fellow Republicans in the hot seat, President Donald Trump called for speedy and substantial changes to the nation’s gun laws yesterday, criticising lawmakers in a White House meeting for being too fearful of the National Rifle Association to take action. In a freewheeling, televised session that stretched for an hour, Trump rejected both his party’s incremental approach and its legislative strategy that has stalled action in Congress. Giving hope to Democrats, he said he favoured a “comprehensive” approach to addressing violence like the shooting at a Florida school earlier this month, although he offered no specific details. Instead, Trump appeared to support expanded background checks. He endorsed increased school security and mental health resources, and he reaffirmed his support for raising the age to 21 for purchasing some firearms. Trump also mentioned arming teachers, and said his administration, not Congress, would ban bump-stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons. “We can’t wait and play games and nothing gets done,”

Still, the televised discussion allowed Trump to play the role of potential dealmaker, a favourite for the president. Democratic lawmakers made a point of appealing to the president to use his politi-

cal power to persuade his party to take action. “It is going to have to be you,” Senator Chris Murphy told Trump. Trump’s call for stronger background checks, which are popular among Americans, has been resisted by Republicans in Congress and the NRA. Republicans have instead been leaning toward modest legislation designed to improve the background system already in place. Trump made clear he was looking for more and accused lawmakers of being “petrified” of the gun lobby. “Hey, I’m the biggest fan of the Second Amendment,” Trump said, adding that he told NRA officials it’s time to act. “We have to stop this nonsense.” The White House meeting came amid fresh public debate over gun laws, fuelled by student survivors of the massacre at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The school reopened yesterday for the first time since a Valentine’s Day assault killed 17. Gun legislation has lost mo-

mentum in Congress as Republican leaders showed little interest in pursuing stricter gun control laws. Democrats said they were concerned Trump’s interest may fade quickly. After the meeting Murphy told reporters: “I’m worried that this was the beginning and the end of the president’s advocacy on this issue. “The White House has to put some meat on the bones. “The White House has to send a proposal to Congress.” The White House is expected to reveal more on the president’s plans for school safety this week, though it has not announced any plans. That announcement will likely include goals for background checks and bump stocks, though whether age restrictions will be specifically addressed remains unclear. Major retailer, Dick’s Sporting Goods, announced this week it is halting sales of assault-style rifles and highcapacity magazines at all of its stores and banning the sale of all guns to anyone under the age of 21. Walmart also announced it would only sell guns and ammunition to people over the age of 21 from now on. - AP

Famously outspoken Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence has given one of her most candid interviews yet with Howard Stern, opening up about her recent dress controversy. Lawrence made headlines last month over her choice of attire during a press call for her latest film. “I walked my bare ass out for the photos. Nobody took a coat from me. All these people trying to be feminist — you’re not. You’re annoying, you make people hate a movement,” she said. “It was a fabulous dress, I wasn’t going to cover it up in a f***ing coat! Also, I shoot in below freezing weather, I can stand outside for 90 seconds in a dress. I want the dress photographed like that! My arms were finally skinny.”

New president for PEN Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Jennifer Egan has been named the new president of PEN America. PEN said that Egan will succeed fellow author Andrew Solomon. He served three years as president of the literary and human rights organisation. The 55-year-old Egan is known for such works as A Visit from the Goon Squad and last year’s Manhattan Beach. She takes over as president during a time of change for PEN, which is merging with the California-based PEN Center USA. She says PEN is committed to fighting censorship and oppression “not only abroad, but at home”.

Gladioli finished flowering?

Here’s what to do next

Have your gladioli finished flowering yet? You might be wondering what you should do with them. If winter is going to be mild and dry where you live then you probably don’t need to do anything. But if you’re like most of New Zealand and usually have a wet, cold winter then we strongly recommend you lift your corms. Why? If you leave them in the ground any weaker varieties will die out in the cold, wet soil. The strong varieties will increase rapidly in the extra space. Within a few years there will only be one or two dominant colours left. This is why people often think that gladioli change colour and the main reason they should be lifted. Before I explain when and how to lift your corms, I’ll just touch on an issue I’ve had several customers ask me about – rust on their gladioli. The gladioli rust is a relative newcomer to New Zealand and usually starts to show up when we get night dew in late summer, then mild days – perfect conditions for it to develop. The best way to treat rust on gladioli is to apply treatment to the whole plant – before you lift the corms. The only control is to spray with fungicides – copper based fungicides as you would use for leaf curl on stone fruit trees. Or you can try a DIY mix of baking soda in water with some detergent added to make it spread out, and wet the plant well. Good coverage on the plant is important for both these options as they work on contact only, and they also need to be applied often during humid conditions that favour the rust.

Now, back to how to lift your corms. The best time to lift corms is about six to eight weeks after flowering. This will allow the corm time to develop well and there should be plenty of small cormlets which you can use to increase your stocks. Don’t wait for the leaves to die back – it’s better to lift the corms when the leaves are still green and healthy. To lift the corms, start by loosening the soil with a fork and, grasping the leaves of the plant firmly, pull the whole plant up out of the ground. Take care to remove all the little cormlets too. Trim the leaves off level with the top of the corm, remove any large pieces of soil attached to the roots, and place the corms and cormlets in a breathable container such as a paper bag. Discard all the leaves and other plant material in the rubbish. Don’t leave it in the soil as this will allow a buildup of diseases which may make it difficult to grow gladioli in the same place again in the future. Next you need to cure and clean the corms. Do this by putting the bags into a warm, airy place for two to three weeks – something like a hot water cupboard. When they are thoroughly dried and cured you can remove the dried roots and the old corm easily and cleanly from below the new corm. Clean the new corms up and remove a layer or two of skin to ensure that they are healthy underneath. Once they’re clean, store them in a cool airy place until planting time in spring. Don’t store somewhere warm as this will result in breaking the dormancy too early before conditions are suitable for planting outdoors. Keep an eye

on them through the winter to make sure they’re not attracting insects. Thrips love to overwinter on them and can cause a lot of damage. A quick spray with fly spray every few weeks should keep them insect-free until re-planting in spring. Next, it’s time to think about what spring flowering bulbs you’re going to plant. Bullitt still a star

ilverstone Auctions has enjoyed another hugely successful Race Retro Sale with celebrity cars showing star appeal and attracting bidders from around the world at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire last Saturday. Joined by hundreds of historic motorsport and classic car enthusiasts, Friday’s Competition Car Sale achieved a very respectable 63 per cent sales rate, followed by the Classic Car Sale on Saturday when 70 per cent of lots were sold, lifting the overall sales total to a heady £3.7 million. Undoubtedly taking centre stage was the 1969 Dodge Charger ‘Bullitt’ spec previously owned by Hollywood film star Bruce Willis and pop legend Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, which sold for £94,500, almost double its lower estimate. Meanwhile, a superbly maintained 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550-Manual formerly owned by music royalty Sir Elton John CBE achieved one of the highest sale prices of the afternoon at £219,375. However, two rare and modern classics from the personal collection of British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson CBE were not to be outdone. With both cars offered at no reserve, the 1993 MercedesBenz 500E provoked a lively bidding war selling for a mighty £71,300, while the 1989 Lancia Thema 8.32 sold for an impressive £29,813. £99,000, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate, a 2004 Honda NSX (facelift) also exceeding its estimate, selling for £84,375. There was also some fast and furious bidding for serious competition cars including the 1990 BTCC Championship winning Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 ‘Group A’ model driven by Robb Gravett which sold for £182,250, and a ready to compete 1970 Lola T210 SL210-07 that fetched £146,250.

Delights of topless motoring

iven the opportunity, both sub-editor Steve Devereux and the writer will be very happy to tell you – at length – that one of the very best ways of enjoying the fine days of this summer has to be in a sports car, top down, especially so on some empty country roads. This experience is both invigorating and different to when travelling in a normal car or SUV, from the feeling of speed and delights of cornering, to the sights, the expanse of sky, to the sounds and smells of the country. But what about those days of torrential rain that now seem to consistently slot in between the days of sunshine and heat? So while the MX-5 Roadster’s lined fabric hood is both cosy and definitely storm proof, some people want to combine their open-air driving experiences with the extra feeling of the security of a solid roof above them. Which is exactly what the MX-5 RF’s Targa-style lightweight, but strong folding hardtop and disappearing rear window provides. With the press of a switch it opens or closes in just 13 seconds. Progress is displayed on an LCD screen, so you don’t even need to turn around to check where it’s at. As well the RF is quite a styling masterpiece, for with roof in place it looks like a fastback coupe. But then, as this and rear window disappear the rear pillars stay in place to create the Targa look. On the open road there’s just a little more wind noise from these than in the Roadster. Wind buffeting however is absent and the driving environment delightful. Then, with roof in place, it’s particularly quiet and refined. There’s three RF models – the $48,495, 6-speed auto-only GSX and the Limited (6-speed manual $51,495 or $52,995 for the auto).

Of course the Limited ups the already impressive features the GSX has by adding climate air-con, satnav, a premium Bose sound system, heated leather seats, keyless entry, different 17-inch alloys and plenty more. The snug, sportily furnished cabin, in which you feel very much part of the car, has an aura of both quality and elegant simplicity. Everything is pretty much exactly as and where you expect it to be, including the colour touch screen. It’s an almost perfect set-up, the only thing missing is reach adjustment for the steering wheel. Clutter-free motoring is encouraged, for there’s no glove box, just a small lockable bin, while the boot, even with an inflation kit in place of a spare, holds 127 litres (two decent sized overnight bags). The RF has the same 2-litre SkyActiv engine as the Roadster. It produces 118kW and 200Nm of torque, all done with a neat exhaust burble. The test car had the 6-speed auto, which does a great job of keeping this always-eager engine (without manual interference) so well on song when you are out there going for it! And then when you are not, it’s delivering a relaxed and easy drive. As well, the smile on your face that appears as soon as you get behind the wheel continues as you hit the road, as the RF’s extra weight is hardly noticed. The suspension is slightly changed to ensure it mirrors the Roadster’s enviable reputation of being totally involving, nimble, perfectly balanced, entertaining and most of all, satisfying in any driving situation. It all happens with the RF in such an accomplished manner, that you always feel in control and the electronic driver aids either don’t interfere or aren’t needed. The ride too is very good, not as stiff as you may expect around town and riding the bumps and corrugations really well.

Finale: Just as the characterful MX-5 Roadsters do, the RF gives you the opportunity to enjoy both topless or solid top motoring. Then during either, it really shows that fun doesn’t need to be fast or frantic, and that in most situations, handling purity will beat power!

A new standard

reen light for a new cabriolet based on the T-Roc: within the framework of its major model offensive, the Volkswagen brand is launching its first convertible SUV. The new model is to be produced from the first half of 2020. At its meeting this week, the Volkswagen Group Supervisory Board confirmed the investment of more than $80 million in the Osnabrück plant which is required for this purpose.

With this decision, the brand will be continuing the cabriolet success story of the Osnabrück team and safeguarding employment at the plant. Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, says: “Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand. “The T-Roc is already setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range. I am especially pleased to note that we can

count on the Osnabrück team’s decades of experience with convertibles. The Osnabrück plant now has bright prospects for the future.” SUVs are currently making a key contribution to the growth of the Volkswagen Group’s core brand. With 720,000 Tiguan vehicles delivered, this car is among the 10 best-selling models in the world and the top three SUVs. By 2020, the brand intends to expand its SUV range throughout the world to 20 models. By then, about 40 per cent

of the vehicles sold by Volkswagen are to be SUVs. With the new cabriolet based on the T-Roc, Volkswagen is bringing this body style into the currently particularly strong growing SUV segment. This model continues Volkswagen’s cabriolet tradition, which dates back almost 70 years. The original version of the T-Roc was successfully launched in European markets at the end of 2017. To date, more than 40,000 orders have been taken for the model.

ston Martin marks the 88th Geneva International Motor Show with an all-new show stand and location fit for the marque’s biggest-ever presence at the opening event of the European automotive show calendar. Aston Martin’s spacious new home is stand #2229, located in Hall 2 of the Palexpo Exhibition Centre. The move was required to accommodate what promises to be the most diverse and exciting display of road and race cars Aston Martin has ever gathered at Geneva. At the heart of this display is the new Vantage, which is making its global show debut. Yet to be tested by the world’s media, this is the first opportunity for press and public alike to have a close look at Aston Martin’s thoroughbred twin-turbocharged V8 sports coupe. Underlining its credentials as the most sporting model in Aston Martin’s series production range, the Vantage road car is joined by Aston Martin Racing’s new Vantage GTE race car. ll variants of the new Jaguar E-PACE have achieved an industry-recognised 5 star ANCAP safety rating. Jaguar’s first compact SUV has been tested to provide the highest standard of safety, with high scores of 86 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection and 77 per cent for pedestrian protection. The E-PACE performed well in the side and frontal test for both adult and child occupants. In the pedestrian tests, E-PACE scored highly, particularly for the protection of a pedestrian’s head in the event of a collision. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) is Australasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate. ANCAP recommends 5-star rated cars. “The Jaguar E-PACE scored well across all assessment areas and features a pop-up bonnet and external airbag to improve head protection for struck pedestrians,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin. E-PACE features a comprehensive suite of standard safety systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. The advanced technology is able to detect a collision risk with cars or pedestrians in the road ahead and automatically apply the brakes. In safety assist tests, E-PACE performed well with a score of 72 per cent. The Autonomous Emergency Braking system demonstrated its high reliability when tested at highway speeds of 80km/h.

■ and cardamom in a small bowl and mix to a paste with a little vegetable oil. Rub into the lamb shanks. ■ Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and add a dash of oil. Place in the lamb shanks and brown on both sides, then trans-

fer to a casserole dish that fits the lamb shanks comfortably. Pour the yoghurt and stock into the frying pan and bring to the boil. Pour over the shanks. Add the green chilli and cinnamon and cover with the lid or tin foil. Place in the oven and cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Turn shanks from time to time and season as required. Remove from the oven and strain sauce into a wide saucepan. Bring sauce to the boil. Pour sauce over the shanks before serving. Children have a right to be fed I

s it time to crack down on parents who send their children to school without lunch? It’s becoming an all-too common and unnerving public issue to hear of schools around our community who have growing numbers of children lining up each day without a full lunchbox in their backpack – or even worse having not had breakfast either. As a parent there is a responsibility to your children to ensure that they have the necessary to flourish and bloom in the classroom and making sure they have food in their stomachs to help charge the energy levels should be paramount. As it currently stands, schools step in to help those who arrive

with a barren lunchbox. And good on them for doing that. But at what point does enough become enough? And at what point do we arrive at the stage where the costs associated with that start to impact on the school as a whole. A lot of teaching establishments have food provided by generous donors, or even other families – but there’s still the expense of time and ensuring that

children are being fed, a role teachers shouldn’t be having to handle. The most concerning aspect of it all is you could almost guarantee some families are milking the system. They’re making the most of a generous situation and taking advantage of that very same generosity by sending their children to school without lunch because they know that the school will foot the tab and no matter what efforts or measures they put in place to try and help those same families, it just continues to happen. Yes, these are tough financial times. In fact, they are incredibly tough on some families. But there is no price on the health and well-being of a child

and those needs should be met before any others. Yes, there are always going to be the one-off situations where a child forgets their lunch which is understandable, but children regularly turning up to school without food is an indicator of a growing epidemic that needs to be addressed before it gets out of control. The basic message should be that if you are struggling to provide lunches for kids there are organisations out there who will help. But you first need to ask. Pride shouldn’t come into the equation with such an issue. If you need help to ensure your child is eating, then ask for it. KidsCan are dishing out a

staggering amount of support which is fantastic, but there does need to be some sort of ownership from parents going forward. We tend to turn up our noses at a lot of things parents do that borders on neglect of their children, but surely providing the necessary for a full and healthy life should be the highest priority. Is it time to introduce some form of punishment? There are rules in place where truancy can land a parent in hot water – so why not the same for sending a child to school without having had breakfast, or without a packed lunch. I know which one I think seems more important in the bigger scheme of things.

ccording to the World Health Organisation, 300 million people worldwide have it. WOW! Depression. Maybe it’s just because I have been touched by it before, but I feel like I’m hearing or seeing stories about it every other day at the moment. Three stories have crossed my path this week alone. One saying that antidepressants are okay and are working well. Research from Oxford University, found that more than one million extra people would benefit from being prescribed drugs and criticised “ideological” reasons doctors use to avoid doing so. Data from 522 trials, involving 116,000 patients, found that every one of the 21 antidepressants used were better than a placebo. The findings offered “the best available evidence to inform and guide doctors and patients” and should reassure people with depression that drugs can help. “Antidepressants can be an effective tool to treat major depression, but this does not necessarily mean antidepressants should always be the first line of treatment,” the researcher told a briefing in London.

Story two was some patients say Pharmac’s switch to fund a cheaper, generic brand of antidepressant has left them struggling with everything from headaches to serious depression and are urging the government drug-buying agency to start funding their old meds again. One patient was left feeling suicidal after taking the new drugs. Let’s hope this gets sorted asap! The third story was my favourite. Eating a diet of vegetables, fruit and whole grains may be a simple way to combat depression, a new study suggests. Researchers in the US followed nearly 1000 people of an average age of 81 for more than six years monitoring their diet and mood. They found that people who avoided red meat, saturated fats and sugar, and stuck to healthy vegetables, fruit and whole grains, were 11 per cent less likely to be suffering depression by the end of the study.

I really believe we are what we eat. We really need to take more notice of what our bodies are telling us. I know for a fact that I feel so much better after eating a meal with good quality veges, especially if I have just harvested them from our garden, than I do after processed food or takeaways. We need to swap sugary fizzy drinks for water. Drinking a heap of water is something 90 per cent of us need to work on and I am the first to admit I don’t drink enough. I also think sleep is as important as diet if not more so. I certainly get the ‘blues’ kick in when I have less than six hours sleep. Thank god for nana naps! I reckon this is a biggy for our younger generation and the amount of time they spend on smart devices, especially just before they try and get some sleep. My brush with the D word was circumstantial and mainly due to missing my kids when I separated, but a couple of wee tips I came across really helped me. It’s OK to feel sad or ‘blue’, you can’t be happy ALL the time, so don’t analyse it too much or beat yourself up about it. Find a ‘happy place’. A memory from the past that brings a smile

to your face instantly. Mine’s easy at the moment, it’s when a certain 14-month-old sees me for the first time each day and says “Hiiiii” with a huge smile and unbridled love all over her face. Try to go to that happy place when you’re feeling down. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly don’t think that if people eat a courgette and think happy thoughts, that they’ll all of a sudden be right as rain. I know for some it is an incredibly tough daily battle. If you’re going through a tough time, you have 300 million reasons why you shouldn’t feel like you’re doing it on your own. Make sure you talk to someone you can trust, that’s got to be better than bottling it all up. Try and remember, life’s not that serious, none of us are going to get out alive! New Zealand log exports to China at record levels By Tina Morrison New Zealand exported a record volume of logs to China last year as Asia’s largest economy clamped down on harvesting its own forests. And the future points to constant or better demand in coming months, according to AgriHQ’s latest forestry market report. The country shipped a record 18.8 million cubic metres of softwood logs overseas in 2017, up 18 per cent on 2016, with exports to

China jumping 29 per cent and accounting for three-quarters of the total. New Zealand cemented its position as China’s top source of softwood logs last year, with its share of the market lifting to 36.3 per cent from 34.7 per cent. China’s overall demand for softwood logs increased 10 per cent to 31 million tonnes as the country clamped down on harvesting its own forests and reduced tariffs on imported logs to meet demand in

This has already slashed the amount of logs being harvested from native forests, while tougher enforcement of pollution policies are already clearing out the number of old and inefficient wood processors.” He said the New Zealand log market “is not all about China”, citing a push for more affordable housing in India that would stoke demand for New Zealand logs.

“India has shown little sign of showing any reduction in demand, and it’s thought its importance to NZ over the coming years will only grow,” he said. India is New Zealand’s thirdlargest softwood log market, with an 8 per cent share, while South Korea is the second-largest with a 13 per cent share. NZ Rugby announces bumper $33m profit New Zealand Rugby, buoyed by last year’s British and Irish Lions tour, have announced a record $33.4 million profit for the 2017 financial year. NZR earned $257m in income, offset by $224m in expenditure paying salaries and hosting the Lions tour, three rugby championship fixtures and a test against Samoa. They also grew sponsorship by 14 per cent. NZR chief Steve Tew said the Lions series came in slightly ahead of budget and its profits would be spread out over the coming years. They made $40m more from the 10-match Lions series – including three tests – than they would have in a typical three-test June series. The test series ultimately ended in an extraordinary 1-1 tie, after the third and deciding test concluded in a 15-15 draw. “The New Zealand Lions Series generated massive interest both here in New Zealand and globally and that’s reflected in the numbers, but it needs to be put in the context of being a one-in12-year-event,” Tew said. “If you look at 2017 we had an unusual number of top quality international rugby matches played on New Zealand soil and, as a result, NZR benefited from a significant spike in income, mainly from increased gate takings and broadcasting revenue.” Tew said the union had worked to put provincial rugby on a

stronger footing and to grow women’s rugby after the Black Ferns’ 2017 World Cup success. Their $257m in earnings contrasts with $162m in the 2016 financial year, while their $224m in expenditure is significantly higher than 2016’s $169m. The union had made a $7.5m loss in the 2016 financial year. “Our (tour) goals were to showcase New Zealand, contribute to the country’s economy, ensure the series was profitable and to

win the tests,” Tew said. “We didn’t always get the onfield results we were after but Super Rugby and provincial rugby fans from New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland got behind their teams and made the series a fantastic celebration of the game.” The government said the Lions series – which took tourists as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Dunedin – injected $245m into the economy. – NZN

Mare set for Cuddle Stakes Strolling Vagabond begins her quest for black type at Awapuni today. The Darci Brahma mare will make her first appearance since she was successful on the Palmerston North course in November when she runs in the Agricom Handicap (1550m). “She got pretty fat while she was out for six weeks so I’ve been piling the work into her,” partowner and trainer Gerald Innes said. “Whatever she does she will improve, she still looks a bit burly but she won’t mind the slower track and it’s only a small field. “She’s very honest and always gives it her best shot. “She comes to hand quite quickly so she’ll have this race and then I’d like to run her in the Cuddle Stakes at Trentham.” Strolling Vagabond, who will be ridden by apprentice Holly Andrew, has won five races from 1400m to 2100m and has handled good to heavy going. “She can really go on anything and I think 2000m is probably her best for her distance-wise,” Innes said. Innes also rates his other two runners, Class Above (Meridian Energy 1600m) and Super Girl (Nufarm 3YO Maiden) as good chances.

Surgery for Dorchester Exciting North Canterbury threeyear-old The Dorchester will bypass next week’s Northern Derby at Alexandra Park. Instead, he will be heading to a vet clinic for minor throat surgery to rectify a breathing issue. Trainer Mitchell Kerr made the decision after a disappointing trial at Rangiora, which was acting as the decision-maker for a trip north. It’s not a major surgery and the recovery time is relatively quick, but it will count the son of Mach Three out of not only next Friday’s Northern Derby, but also the New Zealand Derby at Addington on April 6. - HRNZ

On Saturday, Aloisia will take on the boys in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington, while at Ellerslie, Romancer and Vin De Dance will line-up in the Gr.3 Darley Stallions Plate (1200m) and Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) respectively. “It’s a big weekend, huge actually,” OTI Racing Manager Terry Henderson said. “I’ve elected to come to New Zealand.” There he will see Romancer kick-off proceedings on the New Zealand Derby undercard, where Henderson thinks the Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs runner will be a chance after his last-start runner-up performance in the Gr.3 Brighthill Farm Concorde Handicap (1200m). “He’s in very good form,” Henderson said. “It’s a small field, so the tempo may not be as strong as we would otherwise like it, because he’ll need a strong tempo to be competitive in that field. “On the back of his last run at Ellerslie he’ll put in a shake.” In the following race, last-start Gr.2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) placegetter Vin De Dance will

the Avondale Guineas so I think that it is going to be a good solid race.” Meanwhile, spring carnival darling Aloisia will line-up in the Australian Guineas for trainer Aaron Purcell and Henderson said the Azamour filly has improved immensely since her unplaced run in the Gr.3 The Vanity (1400m). “She’s trained on super since her first-up run. “She was rather dour to be honest before that run in her work. “She really seems to have sharpened up, so it’s very good. “She has got a bad gate as well (13), but it’s a hard race to assess because most of the favoured chances have drawn wide. “It’s going to be a very interesting tactical race.” Both Aloisia and Vin De Dance will move on to Sydney to commence their autumn campaigns, while Romancer’s future is a little less known. “We have no real firm plans with him at this stage,” Henderson said. “We have spoken about the Stradbroke Handicap being a good target for the horse. “There are no plans to move him to an Australian trainer yet and if that happened I don’t think it would happen until after the autumn carnival.” - NZME

The juvenile trial win of Eloquent Mach at Invercargill on Wednesday was enough to satisfy his trainer Clark Barron that he’s ready for the races. “It was a nice run; he worked to the lead and kept going, a strong staying performance,” Barron said after the 1.58.4 mile-rate effort (1700m). “He’ll race next week at the Northern Southland meeting and then the Kindergarten. Westport track recovers Following the recent Cyclones Fehi and Gita the Westport Trotting Club are thrilled to announce that their racing surface for their meeting on Friday March 9 has bounced back in great order. Following Fehi the track was inundated with sea water from a large surge caused by the storm. The sea water caused damage to the grass. But club president Dan Moloney was quick to praise the club’s members and the swift efforts involved to resurrect the track. “We applied gypsum and ammonium sulfate and are amazed at how well the track has recovered. Making plans for Stokes Martin Guptill said the Black Caps plan to “take down” England cricketer Ben Stokes in tomorrow’s third ODI clash in Wellington. Seu on familiar ground By nigEl yaldEn It is said that you should do in life what brings you joy. Taleni Seu has found that in rugby. The 24-year-old Auckland loose forward is in his third season of Super Rugby with the Chiefs, having been recruited to the Hamilton based franchise for his off field character, in particular a strong work ethic, as much as his significant on field talent. Seu’s drive to improve and contribute is borne out of the sheer enjoyment he derives from playing sport. “When I was growing up playing basketball, I just loved playing basketball, so that’s why I played. “Now I’ve grown a love for rugby. “I just love showing up and love it being my job.”

At 2.02 metres and athletic with it, basketball was a sporting option that Seu admits to having thoughts of pursuing further. However his parents pushed him down the path toward a career in rugby. “Growing up and picking between basketball and rugby, my mum just said ‘I want you to buy me a house’ and in the back of my head it’s always there that that’s who I’m working for, my family.” Whereas some may be weighed down what could be construed as the burden of that kind of expectation, Seu uses it to empower him on a daily basis. “Without them I wouldn’t be here, without everything they’ve done for me, I wouldn’t be the man I am today.” Seu gets another chance to play in front of his family and friends tonight when he runs out

Supercars roar back on the track By Erin Thompson

ell folks, the Supercars’ championship kicks off this weekend in Adelaide. It’s the 20th time the big bangers have visited the mean streets of Adelaide and 2018 is the 15th time the event has been the opening stanza of the series. Adelaide is my favourite race weekend on the Supercars calendar. Sure, Bathurst is probably the most iconic, but Adelaide has a bit of everything, including history as it’s where the Australian Formula One Grand Prix was held for 10 years. The place has pedigree, it’s set in a great local location close to the city centre, but with loads of parkland, wide open streets and one of best corners – Turn Eight – of any track. People flock to the track in such huge numbers that on occasion the gates are closed as the place is packed to the rafters. The drivers reckon it’s one of the most physically demanding races in the championship and will push them to their limits especially in the heat of the South Australian capital. And if it’s not baking hot, it’s absolutely pouring with rain, which just makes the

racing even more interesting. Over the years there have been some standout and crazy moments that live on in most motorsport fans’ memories. For me, one of the earliest memories was back in 2000. Mark Skaife, who failed to finish Saturday’s race, had to start from P38 on the grid for Sunday. Appearing to have nothing to lose, and throwing everything at it including the kitchen sink with a bit of good fortune thrown in, Skaife won the race. Turn Eight has always been the home of the brave and slightly mad. At around 220km/h with the outside of the car fully loaded (there’s a great picture of Scott McLaughlin fizzing through there on three wheels) it takes some cojones not to lift off. However, you don’t want to get it wrong. Hence my next standout moment. In 2009’s race there was a battle royal between Paul Dumbrell, Greg Murphy, Russell Ingall and Mark Skaife. Murphy tried to go round the outside of Dumbrell with a little too much enthusiasm and smacked into the outside wall of Turn Eight. Skaife though he could sneak by Ingall as well and he promptly hit the wall as well and so ended both their races.

Jamie Whincup shows the way. A personal favourite though, was in 2014 when then 20-year-old McLaughlin announced to the paddock he had arrived. The Kiwi was showing five-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup bugger

all respect while battling him for second place. Whincup managed to muscle his way through with a few corners to go, only for McLaughlin to pressure him into a mistake at the last corner and that was that. What immortalised the incident was McLaughlin’s unrestrained and from the heart response post race when he said, “I don’t know what happened there. I just plucked it in first, gave it some jandal and f*** yeah!” And finally there’s 2016 when a home town boy made good. Heavy rain caused all sorts of grief, chaos and carnage for everyone up and down pit lane resulting in the race being stopped on lap 41. With five minutes to go the race restarted and Nick Percat jumped to the lead on the final lap after the other teams had to take their mandatory fuel stop, which he had taken just before the stoppage. If anyone is in doubt just what an unknown this race is, in the past 20 years there has not been one race where 100 per cent of the field has finished. And, just to throw in another curve ball, Turn Eight has been resurfaced for 2018 meaning more grip and higher speeds. Yeeha!

Heading into season 2018 the Broncos are a side under the gun given their 11-year premiership drought – the longest in the glamour club’s history. The Broncos have been linked with off-contract North Queensland premiership-winner Paul Green while Queensland coach Kevin Walters has been added to Bennett’s staff. Walters is known to covet the Broncos job and will be in the wings should 68-year-old Bennett not see out his contract which expires next year. e’s not everyone’s cup of tea, not that it matters all that much at the end of the day, but there’s no denying the fact that the retirement announcement of Wyatt Crockett earlier this week will leave a major hole in New Zealand rugby. Crockett is one of those likeable larrikins of the game. He’s got a bit of cheek and a good sense of humour, but when the push comes to shove he’s one of the first guys you’d want standing there next to you ready to do battle. When he does hang up the boots for the final time later this year, it will be only then that a good portion of the rugby-loving community probably understand just how important he has been to the New Zealand rugby scene. There’s no beating around the bush

when you describe him as one of the best at his trade. His scrummaging technic is exceptional, and I would urge any of you to watch an entire match, focusing just solely on him to see what his work-rate around the paddock is like. Props aren’t the pretty and flashy boys on the field. They’re better known for cauliflower ears and slightly demented faces from spending far too much time at the school of hard knocks. But the role of a prop can be best defined as one who rolls their sleeves up and gets the job done, especially with minimal fuss. That’s Wyatt Crockett. With just 12 matches remaining until he reaches 200 Super Rugby appearances and with 71 All Blacks tests under the belt, it’s been a quite incredible display of longevity. It’s no mean feat for any form of rugby player to have played for close to 15 years, but for a front-rower to have such a long

and elusive career at the elite level is quite a remarkable effort considering the extra strain on the body through playing in the engine room. But the best part about Crockett is his attitude and outlook on the game he loves. I particularly remember an interview I did with him ahead of his 100th Super Rugby match for the Crusaders. Often those stories are very run of the mill. There’s not a lot of spark to them and the interviews can feel a bit like a chore as the person in front of you pulls out every cliché in the book. Yet with Crockett, it was different. He spoke with such pride and conviction about the game of rugby. It was such a rare thing. You could sense the passion emitting itself through words and facial expressions and his final line about how he would do anything for his team-mates, whether they be Crusaders, Canterbury or the All Blacks

was a perfect final statement to mark the achievement of the man. It hasn’t always been plain sailing though. His ill-discipline at times caused plenty of concern – the serial offending early in his appearances got to a point there where the TAB may well have contemplated opening an option on every match he was involved as to what point he gave away a penalty. But a true understanding of that intent can be found from that very same passion that he showed when I did that interview. Crockett’s a man who goes head first into everything. Yes, sometimes it doesn’t work. But there’s far more occasions where it has, than when it hasn’t. Take the time over the coming weeks of Super Rugby to watch the man in action. If you’re not impressed by him already, I’ll guarantee you will be after watching a few games.
