Road users are being warned that repairs to the Rakaia Gorge Bridge could take up to four months to complete. Temporary traffic management and scaffolding has been installed ahead of a major repair project on the historic No. 1 bridge, which will involve daytime closures and full night-time closures of the site in weeks to come. A figure of $1.2 million has been set aside for the project, which will be car-
ried out by Downer and Opus, under the monitoring and guidance of heritage conservationists. It will see the bridge deck replaced, the handrail refurbished and structural elements seismically re-strengthened among other minor safety improvements, said Transport Agency Network Manager Jess McFarlane. The work programme will run from May to August, and see daytime and full night-time closures. NZTA advised that because the work is weather de-

pendent, it could be extended to “up to four months”. During the day, from 7am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, traffic will be controlled by the use of stop/go signs. Delays could be up to 20 minutes, with traffic allowed through for 10 minutes on every hour and half hour.

Canines and their owners in training By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Methven dogs, and their owners, are in training – perfecting their barking technique as they gear up for a new event in town. Bark Up at the Blue is to be held on May 19 at the Blue Pub. Methven Young Farmers is organising the inaugural event, and hopes to attract as many farm and town dogs, with their owners, as possible. The competition will involve people from throughout the area bringing their four-legged companions to the Blue Pub, putting them on the pool table, and trying to entice them to bark. “If they can’t bark, then the owner needs to bark,” explained organiser Kelsie Laing. Methven Young Farmers was holding the competition to get
the community together for a fun event. She said similar events held at Fairlie and other areas had been a great success. There will be prizes for best farm dog, best non-farm dog, kids 13 and under and best dressed dog. Among those preparing for the event is Rakaia Gorge shepherd Billy Dowle, a committee member at Methven Young Farmers. He is in the process of determining the best barkers amongst his faithful pack of hounds, and plans to enter at least one or two on the night. Entry is $20 which includes a singlet and $5 donation to Methven Care Trust, and singer Maggie Ruddenklau is to entertain on the night. Registration will be between 6 and 7pm and the competition will get under way at 7.30 pm.

Police appeal for help from the public By Katie todd

Ashburton Police are calling on the public to help with two separate incidents. As investigations continue into Thursday night’s armed robbery of the Ashburton Discount Dairy, police are calling on anyone who has seen anything in the days prior, and following. Police are seeking any information that could help them identify the person who entered the Alford Forest
Road dairy about 8.20pm with a longbarrelled firearm, threatened a staff member and made off with cash. “Our concern is that there is still someone out there who is prepared to do violent crimes,” Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said. He said information can be shared by calling Ashburton Police on 03 307 8400 and quoting file number 180427/3253, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Meanwhile, locals are asked to keep an eye out for a Toyota Prado

taken from Hollands Road in Tinwald on Sunday night. The vehicle is blue in colour and has the registration DTG24, and those with any information can again call Ashburton Police Station or Crimestoppers. Police said in light of other recent incidents, they would also like to remind those across the district – including those in more rural areas – to stay extra vigilant about car security. Dean said it’s important that people keep their vehicles locked and never leave their keys inside their vehicle.

From P1 The bridge will be closed to traffic at night (from 10pm until 5am) for a period in mid-May when the deck will be replaced. Drivers who wish to travel on the nights of full closures will need to use the Rakaia Bridge, which will add up to an hour and 40 minutes to the journey. “The exact dates for the night closures will be advertised by electronic signs and media/social media updates ahead of time to keep regular road users and the wider community informed,” said McFarlane. The wrought-iron bridge was built between 1880 and 1882 and is one of two-single lane bridges that together span the gorge. It is an official historic place. Siblings galore By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
When it comes to learning surnames Fairton School Room 1 teacher Andrea Small has an easier task than most. She’s landed a pretty unique classroom this year – one in which half the class are siblings. Out of 20 Year 4-6 students, Small teaches one set of brothers, one set of twins, two sets of sisters and one brother and sister. It’s a situation most would describe as unique, but ask the siblings how they feel about sharing a class and you’ll get the unanimous cry of “annoying!” A recent school camp provided a particularly interesting experience, Small said, with all siblings opting to sleep in different rooms and travel on different buses. Small said she had been a little apprehensive about the smaller pool of parents available to help out on trips like the camp, but many had happily pitched in. She also enjoys the perk of easily organised parent-teacher interviews. Fairton School teaches two classrooms in total from its rural site – one new entrant to Year 3 class, and one Year 3 to 6 class. Small said four students who don’t have a sibling in room 1 this year have a sibling next door in room 2, meaning her classroom next year is likely to contain a similar quantity of siblings.
Exactly half of Fairton School Room 1 this year are siblings. From left: brothers Zac and Lachlan, sisters Taryn and Caitlyn, sisters Keisha and Ruby, twin sisters Kate and Abby and siblings Alex and Sarah. PHOTO KATIE TODD 010518-KT-0140
Man used stolen card An Ashburton man who stole a bankcard from an unattended handbag at Ashburton Hospital used it at service stations and liquor stores to buy goods worth $455. Graham found a wallet in the handbag and took a credit card and between 10.52pm that night and 1.43pm the next day he used it 11 times to buy items from service stations, a fast food outlet and two liquor stores. ■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COURT
Lawnmower jaunt ends in court appearance Two men who stole a lawnmower for a lark have ended up paying $400 to have it repaired and restored to new. Julius Reg Tierney, 36, and Logan Moulin-Wilson, 21, were jointly charged with stealing the $150 mower when they appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week. They pleaded guilty, were convicted and each ordered to pay $200 reparation; they also wrote letters of apology that were presented to Judge Joanna Maze. Police said the pair were walking past an Ashburton address about 10pm on April 1 when they saw the mower, left out for repairs. They took the mower and hid it in bushes nearby, intending to return for it. But they were seen by police and admitted to officers it had been a stupid thing to do. Tierney’s lawyer Gretchen Hart said her client knew he was in the wrong. “If something is left lying around it is not an invitation to

take it.” The judge said $400 reparation for the complainant should have the mower “magnificently restored”. Others to appear before in the Ashburton court this week: Max Leslie Sinclair, 31, was sentenced to six months community detention, 100 hours community work and nine months supervision on charges of receiving stolen vehicles, burglary, trespass and dishonestly using a document. Sinclair’s lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said he had been influenced by a co-offender during the period of offending last year but he was now working and sorting his life out. Judge Maze said a short jail term, as recommended by the crown prosecutor, would likely cost Sinclair his job and community detention with supervision would allow him to keep making progress.
Desmond Cyril Lawrence Angus, 24, was sentenced to three months community detention, nine months intensive supervision and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting drink driving, two charges of careless use, two of stealing petrol and threatening grievous bodily harm. Angus, from Methven, was driving with 493mcg when he narrowly avoided a collision. He also admitted drinking before crashing his car in the Kawarau Gorge last November. The vehicle hit a rock face and blocked half the road, but Angus left the scene. He told police later he had fallen asleep at the wheel after drinking alcohol. Judge Maze said drugs and alcohol could be issues for Angus, who would also be on judicial monitoring during his sentence of community detention. That means the judge receives regular updates about his compliance and can review the sentence if needed.
Rohan James Barham admitted breaking into a supermarket store yard and stealing items worth $39.99. He was sentenced to 75 hours community work; the crime was committed while he was serving a sentence of intensive supervision.

Judge Maze said the consequences of Graham’s driving could have been considerably worse. “At 19, in a spectacular way, you have shown you have no understanding of the privilege it is to hold a driver’s licence and the responsibilities that are attached to driving.” She also ordered Graham to pay $500 to the owner of the damaged fence and $1000 to the owner of the car he was driving.
A young man driving at speed who crashed through the front fence of a house was sentenced to six months supervision and disqualified from driving for six months. Callum Graham, 19, was under the influence of alcohol and on a learner’s licence when he crashed, ending up on the front lawn of the house on Carter’s Terrace on February 28. He had admitted a charge of dangerous driving. Police said he was speeding at
A Mayfield man who lit a fire in a recycling bin pleaded guilty to a charge of intentional damage. Dylan James Kirk was remanded to May 28 for sentence. Police said Kirk, 20, was walking at 3am on March 22 and came across the Ashburton District Council recycling bin, worth $75. He lifted its lid and set fire to paper inside; he had been drinking. He was frantically trying to put the blaze out when he was apprehended.
He was also ordered to pay $122.96 reparation for the stolen petrol and $251 to cover the cost of having his car towed from the Kawarau Gorge.

■ METHVEN LIBRARY AND MUSEUM
Destruction sparks new vision For the first time Methven’s library and museum are under one roof, in a new building which has been seven years in the making. The beginning of the Methven Library and Museum building project, about two years ago, represented just one milestone among many as committee members of the two facilities strived towards their vision. Achieving this vision was celebrated on Sunday, the new building getting off to a strong start, with about 150 people attending its official opening, and crowds continuing to flock there this week. In attendance at the library on Monday was committee member Fran Brown and treasurer Gaewynne Hood, and they were pleased to report seven new members in the first hour of opening. The library is opening 2pm to 4pm each day this week, and committee members hope not only to take on new subscribers, but volunteers as well.
Seven years of hard work has paid off for the Methven Library and Museum. Susan Sandys reports. For now they are retaining their traditional opening hours of 2pm to 4pm Tuesdays and Fridays and 7pm to 8pm on Fridays. However, strong patronage will see hours increase. “The more people come, the more we will be open,” said spokesperson Julie Barlass. The opening of the building on Sunday had been a culmination of the hard work and funds many had put into the project since the Canterbury earthquakes damaged the original building at the site. She said it had been a great achievement to come from an under-insured library building damaged in the quakes, to a new architecturally designed facility which was debt free. “It says a lot about Methven,” Barlass said.
Methven Historical Society chairwoman Kathryn McKendry was similarly pleased with the opening of the museum, and how fantastic the building looked. Volunteers had recreated an Edwardian lounge in the new museum, and had a number of other displays under construction. The society was hoping to take on more volunteers and new subscribers, and had not yet confirmed its opening hours. At the opening, former mayor Angus McKay was the master of ceremonies, while current mayor Donna Favel and Ashburton District councillors and Methven Community Board members were also in attendance, as was Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. There were deputations from funding agencies such as Ashburton Trust, Lion Foundation,
Advance Ashburton, and trusts including Mid South Canterbury, Lochhead, and Mackenzie. Methven-born architect Ken Crosson, who gifted the design of the building, had flown down from Auckland to attend. Methven Lions Club members, who have put a huge volunteer effort into the project, represented the community in being presented with the keys to the building. Project management committee chairwoman Zella McGirr said the library and museum committee members had achieved their vision, which was to pool their resources and create a facility which both honoured the past and celebrated the present. This was achieved despite road blocks and red tape along the way. “It was thanks to the generosity, both financial and in kind, from
the community, we presented the building debt free to the community. And it’s up to the community to patronise it,” she said. The first book issued in the new building was to library stalwart Marjorie Collins, who was secretary for 58 years, on Sunday. Following the former library and museum being damaged in the earthquakes, both were demolished, after a battle with the Historic Places Trust which wanted to preserve the listed library building. This was despite the library being in a particularly poor state, following a drunk driver crashing into it. Library committee members continued operation throughout the facility’s absence at the Main Street site, issuing books from the small Mt Hutt Roads Board building across the road.

■ CONSERVATION
Keep reporting kea sightings BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Kea-loving locals can help conservation efforts this winter through a unique “citizen science project”. PHOTO KATIE TODD 270418-KT-0130
As winter approaches and snow-seekers head for the hills, the founders of a successful conservation project are urging locals to keep watch for feathered, green friends. The Kea Sightings Project launched last year with a first of its kind onlinekKea database, where the public could log sightings of kea birds on a map, view detailed information about birds with DOC bands, and sponsor individual kea to help fund conservation efforts. In just eight months 1439 sightings have been recorded and $12,000 has been donated to the cause, but founders are still seeking to increase the number of contributing citizen scientists helping paint a big picture of kea behaviour. “We’re amazed at how well people have jumped on it. It’s really taking off … but we’re still working to spread the word,” project co-creator Mark Brabyn said. While the majority of sightings have been around Arthur’s Pass where a “kea kiosk” advertises the database, he said the team is hoping word of the project will continue to spread around the South Island and throughout areas like Mid Canterbury. “There were three banded kea around Mt Hutt last ski season … it would be interesting to see if it was the same this year,” he said. People logging a sighting of a kea can enter a brief description of when and where the bird was spotted and what it looked like – including
whether it had an ankle band – and any behavioural observations or any photos taken of the bird. The website also incorporates data from DOC, the Kea Conservation Trust, Orana Wildlife Park and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. If the bird is banded people will be able to read up on the bird’s name and other sightings – for example a yellow band with a black letter R identifies Percy, a male juvenile kea banded and sighted five times at the Mt Hutt carpark, and often seen hanging out with a juvenile female. “Sightings of big groups are particularly interesting for us,” Brabyn said. The volunteer-run, donation-funded initiative was launched in a bid to raise awareness of the rapidly declining species, and shed light on factors driving the population down. Brabyn said a valuable boost for the project occurred last year when the species took out Bird of the Year. “It’s done really well to increase the profile of the kea, and of us,” he said. He said the team are now working to upgrade the map on their website to include a search function, and will be writing a biannual newsletter to give contributors updates. If people wish to support the cause in other ways, he said the Kea Sightings Project are also looking for volunteers to distribute brochures to DOC huts. The Kea Database can be found at keadatabase.nz

■ MANGERE DEATH
Pair sought after man’s death Police are looking for two men after a man was found dead and a woman seriously injured yesterday in Mangere. Police found two people lying on the ground on Greenwood Road, shortly after they were called at 6am. The 28-year-old man was dead and a woman had serious injuries, including gunshot wounds. She has been taken to Auckland Hospital. Detective Inspector Faa Va’aelua said police had been talking to the victim to try to find out what happened. He said police did not believe it was a random shooting and were looking for two Tongan men believed to be involved. Greenwood Road was cordoned off while staff examined the scene and forensically analysed a vehicle found there. Sarah Davis, of airport car parking company Fly Park, said she saw a helicopter circling and police cars on Greenwood Road early this morning. “I was working when it all happened.
It’s all dark down those ways and it doesn’t have any street lights. There’s no houses, they took all the houses away from there about 15 years ago.” Police have also blocked Creamery Road, diverting traffic to Kirkbride Road where traffic was crawling. A black police helicopter is hovering over the block between Greenwood Road and Kirkbride Road. Chris Olsen, who runs Kiwi Shuttles is at the corner of Ascot Road and Greenwood Rd, said people often dumped rubbish on Greenwood Road. “Cars are always coming down there in the middle of the night. It is where the city comes to dump its rubbish. Now two bodies have been dumped, it’s pretty sad.” About a year ago a body had been left on the corner outside his business, he said. Cars had been racing down the road at the time, and he suspected the person had been beaten up and then left there. A police officer at the corner of Ascot Road and Greenwood Road said the road may be cordoned off all day. - NZME

Big increase in child asthma at our hospitals The burden of child asthma in New Zealand hospitals has increased sharply, prompting a chest expert to warn that more must be done to control the potentially fatal disease. The proportion of children admitted to hospital with the breathing disease increased by nearly half in 14 years, according to a Massey University study. The hospital admission rates for the disease are more than twice as high for Maori and more than three times as high for Pacific Islanders than they are for other ethnicities. And they were more than twice as high in the poorest areas than in the wealthiest. As winter nears, health authorities are worried New Zealand may be in for a bad season of influenza viruses, following trends in the Northern Hemisphere. Respiratory viruses are a common trigger of asthma symptoms – as are cigarette smoke, nitrogen dioxide from gas heaters and car exhausts, and indoor dampness and mould. “With the onset of cold and flu season, it is critical that adult asthmatics and parents watch out for asthma symptoms, which may signal a potentially deadly attack,” said chest expert Associate Professor Jim Reid, of the University of Otago, who is also a medical adviser to the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation. “As the temperature drops at this time of year, cold air can cause constriction of airways which is also a risk factor for asthmatics. It is important to maintain a temperature of around 20 degrees in the home.” Reid said New Zealand had one of the highest rates of asthma in the world and about 70 people died from the disease each year. “While we don’t fully understand why the rates of asthma are so high among New

Internationally it is estimated that 340 million people are affected by the chronic disease. University of Auckland paediatrician Professor Innes Asher, chairman of the Global Asthma Network, said: “Asthma affects people of all ages in all parts of the world. Symptoms can include significant difficulty in breathing, which makes ordinary activities extraordinarily hard. “There are high costs of poorly controlled asthma, including for acute treatment at the doctor, health centre or hospital, lost productivity of people with asthma or parents of children with asthma, and lost education of children who are too unwell to attend school. This amounts to billions of dollars lost to society.” - NZME

OUR VIEW
Pouring fuel on the petrol price fire I
t will come as no surprise to most of us that one of the big oil companies is in the gun over its petrol pricing strategy. In case you missed it, earlier this week an internal BP email was leaked to the media. It appeared to outline a plan that would see the company push up its prices across the Kapiti Coast area, with the expectation that other companies would follow suit. The resulting hue and cry has drawn in all manner of political leaders and led to the usual calls for government intervention in the retail petrol sector. That sort of talk is nothing new. Both of the major political parties have raised the idea on and off for years. Even former energy minister
and now National leader Simon Bridges raised the prospect when he held the portfolio. I can’t see it happening any time soon though, despite the latest furore. While they may talk about it, it would take a brave government to step in and try to regulate the market. Being seen to set the price of petrol will in the end only guarantee unpopularity. The current government in particular won’t want to give its
critics any more ammunition to use against it, in particular with accusations that it’s not business friendly. Petrol prices will always be a hot topic here, given the number of us who own a vehicle and the wide variation of what’s paid at the pump around the country. To give you some idea, according to pricewatch.co.nz, at the start of this week the average price for a litre of 91 in Canterbury was $2.139. That’s not the highest in the country – West Coast motorists pay an average $2.229 for the same litre. In Southland it’s $1.989, while up north, Taranaki is the place to be, with a litre costing $1.929. Northland, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wellington are the only places north
of Cook Strait to top $2. In case you’re wondering, in Auckland it is $1.969 – but don’t worry, the proposed regional fuel tax should level that particular playing field. The problem for those selling petrol is that for most of us, it’s easy to find somewhere around the country where it’s cheaper, so it’s easy to feel hard done by. On top of that, big oil companies are easy to dislike – they’re faceless and seemingly only too happy to take increasing amounts of our hard earned cash. So for BP to let the sort of information into the public domain that it did this week just added fuel to the fire. Not only could the consumer suspect shady goings on at the pump, rightly or wrongly they
could now point to some sort of evidence. Whether or not that was the case I’m sure will be debated for a few days yet. Personally, I doubt that it is. Foolish? Well that’s another point entirely. One thing however is sure. It’s been a public relations nightmare and I’m sure the person whose name was on the leaked email would like to find a large hole to crawl into and hide. In the meantime, whether you like it or not, those who sell petrol can charge what they like. If you don’t like what they’re charging, go somewhere else. Shop around. That’s one of the advantages of competition. Just don’t use too much petrol doing it.

Transport a top priority T
ransport continues to be a priority for Ashburton District Council as we look to the future of our district. It’s important that we get things right to ensure Ashburton continues to thrive. This is why our roading network and transport upgrades are key issues in the draft Long-Term Plan (LTP) 2018–28. We strive to ensure residents are safe when using local roads and that our transport infrastructure is well maintained. Last year, there were 182 recorded vehicle crashes in the Ashburton District. Canterbury has the second highest number of road deaths in the country, with 21 so far this year. This has contributed to one of the worst nationwide road tolls on record. It is something both local and central government acknowledge as requiring immediate attention. Last month, I attended the Transport Summit 2018 in Wellington with deputy mayor Neil Brown and service delivery committee chair Stuart Wilson. Hosted by Minister of Transport Phil Twyford and Associate Ministers of Transport Shane Jones and Julie Anne Genter, the event was held to give the transport sector, local government officials and community interest groups the opportunity to discuss the draft Government
Donna Favel
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Policy Statement on Land Transport (GPS) 2018. The draft GPS 2018 signals a change in direction in transport for New Zealand, prioritising safety, access to a wider range of transport options, the environment and value for money. Some of the initiatives are particularly exciting for the Ashburton District. The GPS supports the development of a Vision Zero safety strategy which has a goal of no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. This would follow in the footsteps of countries like Sweden and Norway which consistently achieve the best road safety results in the OECD. This plan includes investing in safety upgrades on state highways and local roads to prevent serious crashes, and to make them safer for cyclists and pedestrians; supporting effective enforcement by the New Zealand Police to promote safer behaviour on the roads; and delivering appropriate educational services to the public. Developing a transport system
that is accessible is a focus of the proposed plan. For Ashburton, this means having an efficient link with our ports to continue our strong export industry, and easy access between the two sides of our district to ease traffic congestion and promote tourism. It’s also important that our roads and footpaths support safe cycling and walking. Reducing adverse effects on the climate, local environment, and public health is also high on the agenda in the new plan. Transport accounts for 18 per cent of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions and 90 per cent of these emissions come from vehicles on our roads. The draft GPS 2018 supports a shift to lower emission forms of transport, including the use of electric vehicles, increased use of bio-fuels and encouraging walking and cycling. The final aspect of the plan focuses on making sure investments in roading networks maximise the impact of any money spent. That means getting the best value and ensuring that transport investments are beneficial to our community. The Government has committed to increased spending on regional roading and state highway improvements by 98 per cent, which will be great for our district. Part of its overall change in
transport investment, however, is a shift towards more spending on rail. While the council is fully supportive of initiatives that encourage the use of public transport, we are communicating with Central Government to make sure national decisions don’t negatively impact on our district. That’s why the council has voted against the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF) being used to fund passenger rail services in urban areas. Our district’s agriculturalbased economy means producers across the district rely heavily on road transport and, as a result, local transport companies contribute significantly to the NLTF through Road User Charges. Therefore, the council would prefer to see the NLTF fund used to maintain and upgrade our existing roading structure to continue our district’s financial contribution to the country’s economy. The council is currently preparing a submission about the other key areas of the draft GPS 2018 which will be sent to the government next week. Cardinal to stand trial Australian Cardinal George Pell, the most senior Vatican official to be charged in the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis, must stand trial on charges alleging he sexually abused multiple victims decades ago, a magistrate ruled yesterday. Magistrate Belinda Wallington dismissed around half the charges that had been heard in the four-week preliminary hearing in Melbourne but decided the prosecution’s case was strong enough for the remainder to warrant a trial by jury. The number of charges has not been made public. When she asked Pell how he pleaded, the cardinal said in a firm voice: “Not guilty.” Wallington gave him permission not to stand, which is customary. When the magistrate left the room at the end the hearing, many people in the packed public gallery broke into applause. Lawyers for Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic had argued all the accusations were untrue, could not be proved and should be dismissed. Pell, Pope Francis’ former finance minister, was charged last June with sexually abusing multiple people in his Australian home state of Victoria. The details of the allegations against the 76-year-old have yet to be released to the public, though police have described the charges as “historical” sexual assault offences — meaning the crimes allegedly occurred decades ago.
Thompson trolled Tristan Thompson was trolled mercilessly by Khloe Kardashian fans after he broke his social media silence yesterday. The 27-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers player returned to Instagram to share a snap of himself on the court after they won a game against the Indiana Pacers, captioned: “What an atmosphere in the Q! Great win. #OnToTheNextOne”. Yet in light of recent claims he cheated on his girlfriend whilst she was heavily pregnant, the comments section was awash with remarks such as: “Try winning Khloé back instead of winning the games”, the Daily Mail reports. Australian Cardinal George Pell arrives at the Magistrates Court in Melbourne, Australia, yesterday. PHOTO AP His alleged victims testified in the first two weeks of the preliminary hearing via a video link from a remote location to a room closed to the media and public. His lawyer Robert Richter told Wallington in his final submissions two weeks ago that the complainants might have testified against one of the church’s most powerful men to punish him for failing to act against abuse by clerics. But prosecutor Mark Gibson told the magistrate there was no evidence to back Richter’s theory that Pell had been
targeted over the church’s failings. Since Pell returned to Australia from the Vatican in July, he has lived in Sydney and flown to Melbourne for his court hearings. His circumstances are far removed from the years he spent as the highprofile and polarising archbishop of Melbourne and later Sydney before his promotion to Rome in 2014. The case places both the cardinal and the pope in potentially perilous territory. For Pell, the charges are a threat to his freedom, his reputa-
tion and his career. For Francis, they are a threat to his credibility, given he famously promised a “zero tolerance” policy for sex abuse in the church. Advocates for abuse victims have long railed against Francis’ decision to appoint Pell to the high-ranking position in the first place. At the time of his promotion, Pell was already facing allegations that he had mishandled cases of clergy abuse during his time leading the church in Melbourne and Sydney. - AP

Mueller gives questions to Trump’s lawyers Special counsel Robert Mueller has given a list of almost four dozen questions to lawyers for President Donald Trump as part of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether Trump obstructed justice, according to a report published in The New York Times. The Times obtained a list of the questions, which range from Trump’s motivations for firing FBI Director James Comey a year ago to contacts Trump’s campaign had with Russians. Although Mueller’s team has indicated to Trump’s lawyers that he’s not considered a target, investigators remain interested in whether the president’s actions constitute obstruction of justice and want to interview him about several episodes in office. The lawyers want to resolve the investigation as quickly as possible, but there’s no agreement on how to do that. Many of the questions obtained by the Times centre on the obstruction issue, including his reaction to Attorney
Special counsel Robert Mueller. General Jeff Sessions’ recusal from the Russia investigation, a decision Trump has angrily criticised. Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow declined to comment to The Associated Press, as did White House lawyer Ty Cobb. The questions also touch on the Russian meddling and whether the Trump campaign co-ordinated with the Kremlin in any way. In one question obtained by the Times, Mueller asks what Trump knew about campaign
staff, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, reaching out to Moscow. Mueller has brought several charges against Manafort, but none are for any crimes related to Russian election interference during the 2016 campaign. And he has denied having anything to do with such an effort. The queries also touch on Trump’s businesses and his discussions with his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, about a possible Moscow real estate deal. Cohen’s business dealings
are part of a separate FBI investigation. One question asks what discussions Trump may have had regarding “any meeting with Mr. Putin,” referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Another question asks what the president may have known about a possible attempt by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to set up a back channel with Russia before Trump’s inauguration. Additional questions centre on Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, who has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his discussions on sanctions against Russia with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential transition. Flynn is now co-operating with Mueller’s investigators. “What did you know about phone calls that Mr. Flynn made with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, in late December 2016?” reads one question. Another asks if there were any efforts to reach out to Flynn “about seeking immunity or possible pardon”. - AP
Invite for George, Amal A celebrity hairdresser has let slip that tinsel town’s most celebrated glamour couple will be guests at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding this month. Miguel Perez, a London-based hairstylist to the stars, dropped a hint that George and Amal Clooney would be attending the royal nuptials on May 19 in Windsor, UK. In a bid to avoid questioning about him doing Ms Markle’s hair for the big day, Perez said: “What I can confirm is that I will be in charge of Amal’s hair that day,” he said. The stylist has long been rumoured to be doing Ms Markle’s hair for the day.

Auckland new house listings fall New house listings in Auckland fell almost 5 per cent in April compared to the same time last year but were buttressed by homes hitting the market in other parts of the country, according to realestate.co.nz New listings across New Zealand were up 1.9 per cent to 9899 in April – the first year-on-year rise since last November.
Auckland listings during the month fell 4.6 per cent to 3380 and asking prices remained static, falling 0.6 per cent since March to $955,577. Realestate.co.nz spokeswoman Vanessa Taylor said that while the national increase looked modest, it was a case of several regions offsetting Auckland. “Typically, when Auckland gets cold, the rest of the
country also suffers, but this time when it came to new property listings the rest of the country made up the numbers, led by Canterbury and Wellington,” Taylor said. Both listings and asking prices were up in Canterbury, with volumes rising 30.4 per cent from April last year to 1654 and prices up 2.4 per cent to $499,792. - NZME

ANZ half-year profit falls 16% ANZ has reported a 16 per cent fall in first-half cash profit to $2.88 billion as it continues to cast off units and refocus on its domestic business. Cash profit for the six months to March 31 fell largely because of a previously disclosed loss from two divested wealth businesses, but cash profit from continuing operations rose 4.1 per cent to $3.49 billion helped by a $76 million reduction in expenses. Operating income from continuing operations dipped for a third straight half, slipping 1.7 per cent from the prior corresponding period to $9.81 billion. Net interest margin – a key measure of profitability – dipped 0.05 percentage points over the half and 0.07 percentages over the year as the benefit of recent mortgage repricing faded. The Government estimates the proposal will be able to collect $53 million in revenue in 2019/20, $78 million in 2020/21 and $87 million in 2021/22. Customs Minister Meka Whaitiri said the collection of tax on low-value goods was an extension of the ‘Netflix tax’, which collects GST on services and digital products from offshore companies. “GST has always been payable on low-value goods but it is not cost effective for Customs to collect it when it is $60 or less,” Whaitiri said. “GST is collected at the border for goods over $400. We propose making offshore suppliers collect GST on low value goods at the moment of sale, and in turn, buyers of these goods will no longer pay Customs tariffs or border security and biosecurity fees. “This will simplify compliance and administration costs at the border. This supports the focus of Customs to make cross-border transactions easier without compromising the need to keep out illicit substances and materials.” - NZME

Overseas websites selling low-value goods to Kiwis online will have to collect GST from customers from next year, Revenue Minister Stuart Nash has confirmed. Foreign companies, from October 2019, will be required to be registered with IRD to collect GST on all goods valued under $400 – the same way companies are registered to collect GST on digital services such as Netflix and Spotify at the moment. Overseas retailers will be required to collect GST if their total sales to New Zealand consumers exceed $60,000 per annum. This is the same threshold that applies to domestic businesses and to offshore suppliers of cross-border services. Revenue and Small Business Minister Stuart Nash announced the proposed change yesterday in Wellington, saying the Government was committed to closing the GST loophole to offshore companies. “Domestic businesses have long called for greater fairness in the treatment of low-value goods from offshore retailers,” Nash

High stakes for Blues/Tahs By Patrick Mckendry A man walks into a bar dressed as a cow … Nick Phipps has done well to try to draw a line under his antics at the Woollahra Hotel during his recent stag party but it won’t be the end of the issue as his Waratahs team prepare for a high-stakes match against the Blues. This game is no laughing matter for either team. Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson is unlikely to have pulled punches in reminding his players of their responsibilities as he seeks a rare win over a New Zealand team at Sydney’s Brookvale Oval on Saturday, while Blues coach Tana Umaga and his team will probably be looking forward to escaping the spotlight in Auckland where they have lost all four matches this season. Assuming that the Crusaders, who have won their last five matches, beat the Rebels, who have lost their last four, in Melbourne on Friday night, the Waratahs will be expected to snap what will be a 37-match losing streak by Australian teams against their New Zealand coun-
Blues coach Tana Umaga remains under huge pressure. terparts, an extraordinary run. Phipps’ recent costumed indiscretion – he has admitted urinating against the hotel bar while being severely under the influence – is not a hanging offence by any means but it is a very unwelcome distraction for the Waratahs whom have only just doused the raging media bushfire that was fullback Israel Folau’s comments on social media regarding where he believes homosexuals are headed in the afterlife. Phipps, who described himself as a “goose” at the Waratahs
headquarters yesterday, has rightly taken complete responsibility for his actions. “I was a bloody idiot,” he said. “I want everyone to know how sorry I am.” It is not known whether 29-year-old Phipps, a halfback who has played 61 tests for the Wallabies, will be available to play against the Blues or whether he will be stood down. Phipps is no longer the most dynamic of players but he is an experienced member of a Waratahs team who top the Australian conference but have shown

real vulnerabilities this season, including in a 29-0 shut-out by the Lions at Allianz Stadium recently. There will be expectations in Australia that the Waratahs beat the Blues, who are second to last on the table and have gone from bad to worse this season. But, for all the Blues’ faults, and there are many, they will find the expected warm and dry weather in Sydney this week much more to their liking than the torrential rain and gale-like conditions at Eden Park during their 20-13 defeat to the Jaguares last Saturday. The expectations on them now are so low that even a good performance in a defeat would be acceptable to most of their supporters, but it is at times like these that they have shown to be at their most dangerous. Few pundits gave them a prayer before their victory over the Lions in Johannesburg after they arrived late in the city due to a plane issue in Auckland, but they did it. If they do it again this time the joke will well and truly be on Australian rugby. - NZME

Big ban for Dagg hit Chance Peni, the Brumbies wing who injured Crusader Israel Dagg with a high tackle last weekend, has been suspended for five weeks. Peni was only sinbinned by referee Jaco Peyper despite the high shot, which connected with Dagg’s jaw, causing a head injury, and reinjured Dagg’s right knee. But Sanzaar cited Peni and the judicial committee found he had previous form for foul play. - NZME

In brief
Money-train back on track Lydia Ko has cracked the top 20 money winners in LPGA history and is keeping pace with the legendary Annika Sorenstam’s earning power. Ko, at just 21, is now 18th on the All-Time list having nudged past the $12.5m mark after her career-jolting win in San Francisco on Monday. The first-hole playoff victory over Australian Minjee Lee at Lake Merced broke the former world number one’s 43 tournament drought in a period hit by controversy over her constant change of support people and equipment. There were also claims her family was playing too big a part in career decisions. The long term financial significance is huge if Ko can leave an unexpected slump behind, and re-establish herself as a unique world star rather than simply a member of the leading pack. Time magazine once named her among the 100 most influential people in the world, a status hard to maintain when your golf ranking has zoomed out of the top 10 and is threatening to leave the top 20 behind. Some golf analysts believe Ko’s bad start in the final round of the Mediheal Championship was a turning point, sparking the young Aucklander into rediscovering what makes her tick on the course. It raises the possibility that Ko, the world number one for a staggering 104 consecutive weeks, can claw her way back to the top, and her earnings would also take off once again. The win sees her jump from 18 to 12 in the current rankings. The fastest earner in LPGA history was Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa who won $21.1m in just 175 starts, before prematurely retiring in 2010 aged 28. This equates to about $120,000 per start. The long-haul pacesetter is Sorenstam, who won a record $32m in 303 starts, or about $105,000 each time she lined up. Ko, who won $320,000 at Lake Merced where she is a member, wins on average just over $100,000 per tournament. Ko’s 15 tournament wins puts her 36th in history, one behind the famous Australian golfer of the 1970s and 80s Jan Stephenson, who was noted for taking the game down a more glamorous path. Ko’s net worth is estimated at well over $15m after tax, boosted by five-year contract with PXG golf clubs worth a reported $14m. PXG will be delighted with her return to the winner’s circle, and beyond that there must be renewed potential for her earnings to soar into orbit again. The Golf Digest reckoned Ko was the 44th highest earner among male and female golfers last year, with well over half of an estimated $8.5m earnings coming from off course deals. But it was form rather than her bank balance which led to Ko’s tears in San Francisco, after

Maguire ‘still a coach’ Dumped premiership coach Michael Maguire thinks his time helping the NRL’s referees will give him a unique edge in the hunt for the vacant New Zealand coaching job. Maguire ended South Sydney’s 43-year title drought in 2014 before his sudden departure last season and has since found a home instructing the NRL’s referees and administrators. Maguire sees it as a new way back into the coaching game, singling out the New Zealand job as one of interest. “I’m a coach that wants to learn and it’s a good place to learn.” - AAP
Luke out four weeks Issac Luke will be sidelined for up to a month with a knee injury in a body blow to the Warriors. The inform hooker lasted just 16 minutes of the 50-10 humbling from the Storm on Anzac Day, his darting runs from dummy-half sorely missed. Just five days earlier he had put on his finest display for the Warriors in their 20-12 upset of St George. He’ll miss Saturday’s home match against Wests Tigers, the veteran targeting a return for the round 12 clash with South Sydney. - NZME
Arrow an Origin bolter Even Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan admits he didn’t know much about Titans lock Jai Arrow ahead of the 2018 NRL season. Arrow may soon need no introduction after firming for a State of Origin debut for an injury-hit Queensland when Josh McGuire became the latest forward sidelined for the series opener. Arrow has revelled in his starting role since linking with Gold Coast this year after 24 games for Brisbane, mostly off the bench, so much so that Walters is believed to be tempted to blood Arrow at lock for Queensland at the MCG. - AAP

nearly two winless years on the LPGA tour. The Golf Channel’s Morning Drive show dedicated a segment to her win, with a consensus among the experts on what had happened. Former PGA tour member Charlie Rymer said “Lydia Ko remembered she was Lydia Ko.” “I think it simply comes down to that. “Walking off the sixth green (after her third bogey) she’s in bad shape. She turned it around by making a conscious decision that ‘I’m Lydia Ko – I know how to play golf’. “Up until that point she had been so focused on the technique, everything that’s going on with her caddie, her clubs, equipment ... you know all that doesn’t make a difference.
“She deflected attention by talking about her team and family. “I didn’t see her team or family hitting the golf shots. “You have to decide to play the game the way you know how. I loved seeing this – I think it is going to be a springboard for a restart to her career. “She has learned you don’t have to reinvent the wheel if you are this good.” Former LPGA player Paige Mackenzie said Ko rediscovered her levity. “What always made Lydia Ko unique was this tremendous golf IQ,” she said. “She has amazing touch around the greens, she is a gifted golfer. She is not only technically sound but had this way and presence.
“We’ve seen dominance by other players but they did it with power, did it with intensity. “She always did it with such levity. “Over the past two years it looked like she was bogged down. “It looked almost like the shackles were off (during her latest win).” Sports/golf journalist Damon Hack said: “She was floating around that golf course ... it was a masterful performance.” Another former PGA player Robert Damron said: “With all the changes she has had along the way you lose sight of things. “The three bogeys early on will turn out to be important in the long run. “She was blowing the tournament and remembered ‘I’m going to play like Lydia Ko’.”- NZME
Retired NRL star Michael Ennis has taken aim at the North Queensland Cowboys’ atrocious defence, saying he thinks coach Paul Green is starting to second guess the struggling side’s approach. Last year’s grand finalists were tipped to storm to the title this season on the back of Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott’s return. Instead they wallow in equal last, after losing six of their last seven and on Saturday copping their first home defeat to the Raiders since 2006. - AAP
Dugan to miss a month Cronulla fullback and NSW centre Josh Dugan will miss the next four-to-six weeks of NRL football after breaking his foot on the weekend. Dugan suffered the injury in the Sharks’ 10-9 win over Gold Coast, and scans yesterday revealed the extent of the damage. The Australian star joins Cronulla’s hefty injury list, with captain Paul Gallen and veteran forward Luke Lewis already out injured. - AAP
Autex in Warriors mix One of the original sponsors of rugby league in New Zealand will be joint owners of the Warriors, alongside the Carlaw Park Heritage Trust. A formal announcement will be made later this week, once financial settlement has taken place. Autex Industries will take a 33 per cent share in the partnership set up to run the club.

■ MATAMATA
Primed for winter racing Illness will delay the return of the wet track stakes performer Hello M’Lady. A multiple winner and black type placegetter on rain-affected going, she hasn’t raced since she was out of the money on good ground in the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) in March. “She got really sick with a virus after Wellington, she’s done that before when she gets stressed,” part-owner and trainer Vicki Prendergast said. “She had a good spell and she’s been back in for two weeks so she’ll be back racing at the end of the winter and into the spring.” Runner-up in the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) and third in the Listed Wanganui Guineas (last season as a maiden galloper, Hello M’Lady has subsequently won three races and finished fourth in the Listed Jakkalberry Classic (1950m). Meanwhile, her stablemate Battle Royal will be in action at Matamata today in the BNZ Partners Handicap (2000m). He has won two of his last four starts in the hands of apprentice Jasmine Fawcett, who will again partner the five-year-old. “Jasmine gets on well with him. “He likes to be on the rail and from barrier six he can hopefully get there again,” Prendergast said.
Belle Du Nord’s connections have decided against a start in Saturday’s Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville with the filly to return home for a spell. “She’s showing signs of coming to the end of her preparation, it’s been a long campaign for her,” said David Browne, who prepares the Group One-performed daughter of Reliable Man with his wife Emma-Lee. Belle Du Nord’s two Adelaide outings resulted in a fifth in the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) before a last-start third in the Gr.3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1600m). - NZME
English up for Doomben Hello M’Lady is a multiple winner in heavier conditions, and will be looking forward to winter. Battle Royal has yet to win on a heavy track, but he is expected to cope with the conditions at Matamata. “He’s run second on wet tracks
a couple of times,” Prendergast said. “He’s doing well for a horse that we thought might just get a maiden win.
“He’s no superstar. “He’s been a slow-maturing horse who’s needed time and he’ll probably be better next season.” - NZME
Mongolian Falcon to stand at Willow Glen

New Zealand’s Trotting’s forgotten star, Monbet, is just days off starting his racing comeback. The phenomenally talented, but injurystricken star is around three weeks off returning to work and in great order after being out of training since November. In fact, the Greg and Nina Hope-trained seven-yearold is doing too well. ‘’He is due to come in in about three weeks’ time,’’ Greg Hope said. “He’s done phenomenally well while he has been out and we are really happy with him and he is galloping around.’’ - NZHN

Willow Glen’s successful association with the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry has gone to another level with the Waimate stud to stand Mongolian Falcon. Mike and Barbara Cooney’s South Island operation will launch the stallion career of the well-performed son of Fastnet
Monbet returning
Rock, whose promising career was prematurely ended by injury. Rider Horse Industry principal Lang Lin, affectionately known as Mr Wolf because of his love of his pet wolves, has been a regular visitor to Willow Glen. “He’s been here quite a few times and we’ve sold horses
out of the paddock to Mr Wolf for a number of years,” Barbara Cooney said. “We’ve enjoyed a good association and at his invitation we went to Inner Mongolia in the north of China the season before last. We went to their three-day racemeeting and loved every minute.
“We’re very excited about Mongolian Falcon and Rider Horse will be heavily supporting the horse with a nice selection of mares.” Mongolian Falcon will stand at $3000+GST at Willow Glen alongside Pure Champion, who began his stud career in 2015. - NZME
English has been given a strong hitout to win a barrier trial from Redzel and Spieth at Randwick with all three headed to the Doomben 10,000. James Macdonald brought English from back in the field in yesterday’s 1050m-heat on a heavy track and she overhauled Redzel who was not pushed to the line by Kerrin McEvoy. Redzel will be defending the Group One Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane on Saturday week. - AAP
Pride eyes Stradbroke Impressed by Pecans’ second Group Three win, trainer Joe Pride will now set the bar to the highest level with the mare to be aimed at the Stradbroke Handicap. Ashburton Guardian 17
In brief
National Hurdles targeted The end goal for Go Go Gonzo remains the same as last winter, but a significant change in approach is planned. The Sean Cameron-trained jumper finished runner-up in the 2017 Grand National Hurdles (4200m) and the Riccarton feature is again his target. However, Go Go Gonzo’s lead-up racing will focus on the bigger fences following his appearance at Riverton today in the Donald White Hedgecutting Open Hurdle (2500m). “He’ll be going steeplechasing through the middle part of the season before he goes back to the National Hurdles,” Cameron said. “He’s getting up in the weights now and he’s only a small horse.” Go Go Gonzo was out of the money when he opened his current campaign over 1800m at New Plymouth and was again unplaced over 2200m at Wingatui earlier this month. “I think he’s come back better than ever, even though his two flat runs may not indicate that,” Cameron said. “He was probably a bit disappointing the other day, but he pulled up well and he’s done everything right since then.” Part of a 12-strong team Cameron has taken south, Go Go Gonzo will be ridden at Riverton by Hamish McNeill. He guided him to victory in last season’s Sydenham Hurdles before they finished second to Ready Eddie in the National. - NZME Go Go Gonzo is on track for the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton.

Coldplay in sale ring Multiple Group-winning Savabeel mare Coldplay is bound for auction, although her racing career may not be over. She will be offered for sale by breeder-owners Waikato Stud and Gary Wallace at the Gold Coast, but if she fails to meet her reserve an Australian racing campaign will be considered. - NZME
Queensland plans off Brisbane campaigns for smart fillies Mark Two and Pierrocity have been ruled out. Trainer Stephen Marsh had been considering tilts at the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), but has decided to spell the pair. “They’ve both come a relatively long way in a short time so they’ve gone to the paddock,” he said. - NZME
Clarify crosses Tasman Group winner Clarify will do his future racing in Australia. Raced by the Smithies family of Monovale Farm, the son of Savabeel won five races for Matamata trainer Peter McKay including the Gr.3 Manawatu Cup (2100m) before joining Wayne Walters’ Mt Gambier stable. “It was a business decision to chase the better prize-money,” Joe Smithies said. - NZME

■ MOTOR RACING
Ghost back on speedway track Ashburton racing car driver Craig Butterick will carry the hopes of Mid Canterbury when he competes for the national adult ministocks title at the Ashburton Speedway this weekend. Butterick will be behind the wheel of car number 51c, a mini stockcar that once belonged to his mentor Tony Newman. Newman passed away in 2013 and Butterick bought the car, which he has raced all over the South Island in the years since. He calls it The Ghost. Butterick says the car remains a tribute to Newman, with a new steering wheel and the Datsun 120Y motor maintained by Newman’s engine builder Gary Mehrtens of Christchurch. “There’s been a couple of times when it’s felt like he’s be on my shoulder in races,” Butterick said. The Ashburton driver said he was looking forward to the weekend’s speedway racing and aimed to qualify in one of two preliminary heats on Saturday to take part in the final on Sunday. At least 20 entrants are confirmed for the New Zealand title race. Butterick said everyone in the 10-lap races would be a rival and his aim was to stay focused and put his foot down.
The cars are protected by bumpers front and rear and side rails and Butterick said competition was fierce and the driving technical. He is hoping to replicate the form that saw him take second place at the Otago ministocks championships in Dunedin last year. The next generation of ministock drivers will also be in action over the weekend, with races for junior drivers as young as 11 years old. The speedway meeting will also hosts races to decide New Zealand productions and six shooter titles. Ashburton Speedway spokesman Graham Ackroyd said Saturday would be devoted to qualifying, with the finals on Sunday. He said there was some exciting racing on the programme and competitors were travelling from all over the country. Among them is Allan Kirk of Timaru who, at 80, will be behind the wheel of an XR6 Falcon in the production classes. He is one of the country’s oldest race car drivers. Ashburton Speedway is the only track in the country to feature three New Zealand titles in one weekend and the two-day meeting is part of the Wheel Week Plus programme.

Crusader game under a cloud
RAFFLES
By Jonathan Leask jonathan@selwynapp.nz
The Farmlands Cup preseason Super rugby match between the Crusaders and Highlanders is unlikely to be back in Darfield next year. A crowd of over 5500 people flocked to the Darfield Domain last year to watch the annual preseason match and the Darfield Rugby Club had high hopes of hosting it again in 2019. However, to do so they would have to provide better seating, which club president Scott McIlroy said wasn’t viable. “The [CRFU] is looking for a venue with more seating and that just isn’t an option for us at Darfield,” McIlroy said. “We could go and put up our own temporary stand to host the match but financially it doesn’t make sense – to go to all that trouble and lose money on it.” Hosting the match was a great fundraising opportunity for the club, he said, and while “we made some money, I don’t think we knew how much work went into hosting it”. McIllroy said it was unlikely but they still hoped they could find a way to host the match, investigating other options including setting up a ground in a farmer’s paddock and were waiting to hear back from the CRFU. The minutes of last week’s Malvern Community Board meeting show that Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the Darfield
Hamish Riach Rugby Club was keen to hold onto the possibility of hosting the fixture, but the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) required the construction of a mound or similar structure for people to view the match and would not consider viewing from a flat ground surface acceptable. The CRFU provided the large stand in Darfield last year but McIllroy said he felt they were looking for a venue that already had a stadium-like setup, suggesting Ashburton and Timaru as options. Crusaders Chief executive Hamish Riach said the venue was still to be confirmed. “We are in the process of planning for the match, and once again look forward to bringing this pre-season game to fans with the support of Farmlands.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There are people you keep returning to in one form or another. It’s as though all of the turns eventually lead you back to each other. Your thoughts, intentions or lives will once again intersect. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The reason you’re not sure you want to leap at the chance for more power is that you realise the implications. To accept authority over others is to accept responsibility for their well-being. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Many people have the courage of their convictions without checking to make sure they are in the right. Not you. You’ll put it to the test. If you have to fight, you want to be sure you’re fighting for the right side. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Perhaps the idea of a peaceful world is too far into fantasyland to be a reasonable possibility, but what about peace in your own heart? Whatever is keeping that from happening, it can be overcome. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): In an effort to be understood, some will explain so much of the process that it actually makes things more complicated. As you go about your day, seek simplicity. Simplicity needs less explanation, not more. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re conscientious and you want to help, so you think about what you’re going to say. Maybe you don’t need to worry so much about this. The right words follow the right thoughts. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s a point in which the knife cannot get any sharper. If you keep sharpening it past that point, it will blunt. Know when your work is done, and then don’t work past that point. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There are things you would like to be certain of, but it still wouldn’t bring you the security you seek; it would give you only the illusion of security. Consider letting go of your questions and the need to predict life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): People sometimes oppose one another without knowing why and then look for faults and other reasons that will delegitimise the opposition. It’s a game. Take the high road. Don’t play. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve had advocates and champions in your life, so you know what the role is and how it’s best played. Take it on for yourself today. Be the support you need and deserve. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Relationships get interesting – maybe even spectacular. This is, in no small part, because of your expectations. You either didn’t know what to expect or weren’t expecting much, now it’s all a delightful surprise. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There’s a coin toss feel to the day. Though you’re interested in the outcome, you don’t have a preference about which way it lands. You don’t mind what happens because you’re covered regardless.

A test of driving skills Think you are a good driver? Then the Ashburton Car Club wants to see you at its sealed motorkhana on Sunday. The motorkhana, being held as part of Wheels Week Plus, will be held on a tight and technical course in the Riverside Industrial Area and anyone can have a go. Club captain Ben Lambert said the event would be held on Range Street and Watson Street, one of the side streets that will be part of the AutoSparks Street Sprints later in the Wheels Week programme. Drivers need a vehicle that is up to warrantable standards, though the club has one that can be used. Lambert said it was the ideal chance for people who were keen to try out motorsport
or test their skills driving around cones. Drivers are timed over runs on the short course, which will be defined by cones. The idea is to navigate the course as quickly and carefully as possible. Lambert said one entrant to watch was Ashburton club member Cameron Morison, who lives and works in Christchurch as a pilot. He won the premier gold star title at the New Zealand ClubSport Championship in Christchurch in March. The championship incorporates motorkhana, autocross (a larger version of a motorkhana) and a bent sprint (a road course with at least one bend) and is hotlycontested by grassroots car club members around the country.

“
The personal challenge to do better is what I enjoy most
As national champion, Morison can enter one round of the 2018 Asia Zone Auto Gymkhana Championship with all expenses paid.
Morison, originally from Invercargill, said he enjoyed the technical skill of the motorkhana and the speed of the bent sprint. He also won the ClubSport championship in 2014 and 2016. “The personal challenge to do better is what I enjoy most,” he said. “But I also enjoy the build and work on my car as much as I enjoy driving, but neither would be fun without the friends you meet along the way.” Morison started in motorsport events in 2010 as a student using his road car and living on $250 a week. Motorkhana drivers for the Ashburton event need to register by 10.30am on Sunday and the event has a $40 entry fee. It starts at 11am.
