Spate of thefts has residents on edge BY KATIE TODD

Mid Cantabrians sick of living in fear are taking measures to tackle the rising number of robberies around the district. Following a raft break-ins, thefts and robberies over the past month, Methven resident Kylee Sissons and her friend have taken to Facebook to begin a new neighbourhood-watch style initiative. The new page, Ashburton and Methven Beware, is a small step to help tackle “all the really negative stuff” she said she has been hearing of in Mid Canterbury. Thefts reported over the past week alone include a van stolen on Creek Road, a motorcycle stolen from Chertsey and cars broken into on Shelly Street, Patching Street, Middle Road, Allens Road, Wills Street and Chalmers Avenue. More than nine homes across Hampstead and Allenton have been reported burgled, and property has been stolen from Allenton Garage and Z Petrol Station, resulting in a police chase on Wednesday night. Individuals have also been reported loitering around cars and houses around town, including Beach Road, South Street and Moore Street. “There’s people losing stuff, getting their stuff stolen … I’d seen so much stuff and I just got sick of it,” Sissons said. Her page, which anyone can join and post to, is designed as a neighbourhood watch where individuals can report any sus-
picious activity, thefts or scams. Almost 800 members have joined in five days, and those commenting include victims of crimes and those simply willing to help out, such as one supermarket night shift worker who has offered to report anything suspicious they see when leaving at 4.30am. Sissons said while she encourages people to still call the police and not “try to take things into their own hands,” she hopes to do anything she can to help relieve those living in fear because of crime. “The older generation, the ones who built Ashburton from the ground up … those people are starting to feel scared and it’s not fair,” she said. “And then there’s people like single mothers … I had one post from a solo mum who had four youths break into her house and it’s like – what is she meant to do, sleep with a knife under her bed? I want those people to feel safe again.” She said she would love to stand up to what appears to be a “pattern” of crime. “These people are starting to break into petrol stations again and that’s exactly what they were doing six months ago. “People are getting used and abused and not enough is happening. I mean, the police are doing what they can, and I’ve seen them out there at 3am chasing people – but the more our numbers, the more we can stand up to it all.”

There’ll be no shortage of good kai and community spirit when Hakatere Marae mark their 45th Waitangi Day celebrations on Tuesday. The marae’s Komiti are gearing up to open their doors for their traditional day of whanau fun. Komiti member Janet Benfell said anyone and everyone is welcome to come along, but this year’s celebrations will also have a later start time of 3pm to accommodate the Multi Cultural Bite festival in East Street. The afternoon will offer something for everyone, said Benfell. “There will be games for kids, music, shared meals … we’ll do re-enactments of the original treaty signing and have discus-
sions on the effect and meaning of the document today,” she said. This year, visitors will also have an opportunity to see the marae’s mahau (porch) carving and the new wharenui, Te Poho o Hakatere. The carvings were blessed and the tapu lifted on the wharenui last Labour weekend. The building of the wharenui completes the marae complex. However the interior is yet to be decorated and the Komiti will be fundraising for mattresses and a storeroom. Over the years, the Hakatere Marae Komiti have organised a range of Waitangi Day celebrations, said Benfell. At the 1975 family whanau day, the mayor and several councillors from the Ashburton District
Council took part in the treaty signing re-enactment. In 2007, a re-enactment took place at the Ashburton Art Gallery with Dr Jim Benefield narrating the story of the treaty signing and Ashburton College Principal Steve Lewis playing the part of Governor Hobson. In 2008, gallery visitors were encouraged to do art work on canvas with the theme of I Am Here, and the Cook Island group and a local pop band provided entertainment in the domain. And in 2009, Mayor Bede O’Malley opened the wharekai, Te Hapai O, on Waitangi Day. This year, anyone who comes along to the marae at 449 Rakaia Highway is simply asked to bring a plate of food and a good sense of humour.

Yesterday’s cooler weather gave Ashburton Intermediate School students the chance to gather in the hall and celebrate a traditional powhiri, after it was delayed from the start of the week. New teachers and a new Year 7 group were welcomed to the school community, and staff gave short mihis to introduce themselves. Principal Brent Gray said it was one of the smaller Year 6 cohorts the school had welcomed, with only six Year 7 classes for 2018. But what they lacked in numbers, he said, they made up for with what they brought to the school community. Boy’s lifesavers praised by police Methven Police are praising two men for saving the life of an Ashburton boy. Four friends, aged 12 to 13, were enjoying their summer and jumping off rocks into the river at the Rakaia Gorge on Saturday, January 27, when fun under the Rakaia Gorge bridges turned to fright. One of the boys was caught in the strong current and swept away. His mates stayed with him by swimming together for about 300 metres downstream when the force of the water drove all four
boys into a cluster of thick willow trees. All but one of the students climbed up out of the water to safety but one couldn’t get out; a 12-year-old’s leg was trapped in branches under the water and he was struggling to stay afloat. It was a serious situation and the boy was in dire risk of drowning. A crowd of people had gathered nearby and were desperate to help. But there was no easy access to the riverbank as it was bordered by a sheer cliff. By this time an older girl who
was with the boys before they got into difficulty had called emergency services at 6.10pm and Police were on their way. Fortunately, a private jetboat was travelling downstream. The skipper, Jonathon Sutherland, was alerted, unloaded all but one of his passengers, turned his boat around and went straight to the struggling swimmers. Sutherland and fellow rescuer Christopher Campbell nudged their boat well into the trees and one of the men got into the water and freed the 12-year-old’s foot.
All four boys were scooped up and taken to the riverbank where the crowd had gathered. Police, fire and ambulance staff were waiting and paramedics assessed the 12-year-old as possibly suffering from having a leg injury and swallowing water. The 13-year-old who was caught in the current earlier was upset and cold. Both were taken by Westpac helicopter to Christchurch Hospital, where they were met by their families. The boy who was trapped was released from hospital the next
day with no serious injuries, just a sore ankle. “This was a serious situation where, if it was not for the quick actions of the two men and their ability to extract the boys using a boat, the 12-year-old boy would certainly have drowned,” said Methven Constable Guy Atkinson. “They pulled off a successful rescue during a tense situation. He said the pair should be extremely proud of themselves for saving the boy’s life. “It’s not a day the men or the boys are likely to forget.”

Dunedin artist Anna Reid has set up residence at the Ashburton Society of Arts’ Short Street Studio, teaching local creatives her top printmaking tips and techniques. From yesterday through to Sunday, Reid guided a class through the processes of dry point print making and mono-printing. Reid said she exhibited at the Short Street Studio last year, and was invited back to give a class. While it’s her first time teaching adults, enthusiastic participants were eager to draw from Reid’s skills and produce their own prints.

Motorists speeding through roadworks in Mayfield are learning the hard way why temporary speed limits are put in place around roadworks. The Mayfield Rural Fire Force are urging drivers to slow down approaching roadworks following two crashes over the past week, both within the first hundred metres of freshly sealed roads. “People are coming in too fast, and they’re failing to read the speed limit signs,” said Mayfield Chief Fire Of-

Meanwhile, Westland’s Hokitika factory was operating on limited power and was unable to process milk, with collected milk diverted to other milk processors. There were some farmers on the coast without electric power, some of who were unable to maintain milk in their storage vats at a level required to retain quality and meet food safety standards. That milk was discharged to effluent ponds or disposed onto land.

Cemetery extension Unlike many towns and cities, Ashburton is unlikely to run out of burial space for many years. The Ashburton District Council has plans to extend the Seafield Road cemetery into land it owns towards Bridge Street. It lodged a resource application for the extension and two submissions were received, both in support of the proposal. Once the commissioner’s report is received outlining conditions placed on the consent, a consultant will be engaged to progress design and tendering of the project.

Development plans for both the Ashburton and Tinwald domains will be prepared over the next five months. The plans will guide the long term future development of both domains over the next 30 years. Ashburton does not have a plan but Tinwald does and this wlll be reviewed to take into account changing needs, said council open spaces manager David Askin. At Thursday’s service delivery meeting, district councillors approved up to $30,000 for the preparation of the Ashburton plan and $15,000 for Tinwald. Ashburton’s plan would take into account changes needed around access to the domain when traffic lights were installed at the corner of Walnut Avenue and State Highway One, Askin said. A reserve management plan was written for the Ashburton Domain in 2013 and this sets out standards and guidance for ongoing maintenance. The development plan will detail long term changes and will outline a vision for the fu-

Boil water notice for Mt Somers Ashburton District Council advised yesterday that a precautionary boil water notice has been issued for the Mt Somers water supply, effective immediately. Residents connected to this scheme should boil their drinking water, and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes before consumption. Monitoring equipment at the treatment plant has detected that the quality of the water is not as clear as it should be, and this has reduced the effectiveness of the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection treatment. UV disinfection is used to target viruses, bacteria and protozoa that may be present in water by killing them or rendering them inactive. The Mt Somers UV disinfection equipment is working correctly, however it is less effective during periods when the water isn’t as clear as it should be. The precautionary boil water notice will remain in place until further advised by council.

Warm welcome for PM Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern emerged from her first meeting yesterday with iwi leaders saying it was “warm and practical” but thornier issues such as Maori interests in an upcoming levy on bottled water were not addressed. Ardern said the conversation had focused on areas they could work together, such as children, housing, water quality and climate change. She said the issue of the ownership of water had not come up, but it was a long-standing issue and work would continue on that. The iwi forum has been in talks with the Government over water rights for years. The former National Government’s position was that nobody owned water, but Labour’s election policy to charge for the commercial use of water, such as for irrigation, led to iwi suggesting that was a form of ownership right and Maori interests had to be worked out. That policy for commercial water charges was shelved as part of NZ First’s demands under the coalition agreement, but the Government intends to go ahead with a levy on exports of bottled water. Asked if the iwi leaders had raised the question of whether they should have a stake in that levy, Ardern said it was not raised during the meeting and was a hypothetical question. “Our position continues to be the same. Everybody has a stake in water but we acknowledge that particularly Maori do which is why I have no doubt we will keep having that conversation. But right now, [water] quality is a huge part of that focus.” Te Aupouri’s Maahia Nathan, the forum spokesman this year, said the PM was received warmly

but issues such as bottled water charges and Maori rights were yet to be discussed. “It’s not something that I think is a priority at the moment. At the moment it’s about developing our relationship.” He said that issue would create some tension between individual iwi and the Government in the future but it was the Prime Minister’s first visit to the forum so the focus was on that relationship. Prior to the meeting there was some concern among iwi leaders about the new relationship after nine years of a National government. The iwi chairs forum wrote to Ardern last year out of concern about the attitude some new ministers were taking to the forum, including insisting it focus
more on the social wellbeing of their people rather than Maori constitutional rights. Ardern said she had not felt any tension in the meeting. The aim was to work out where the Government and iwi could work on Labour’s new priorities rather than those of the previous Government. “I certainly didn’t feel any tension at all. Perhaps I’m being an optimist but I felt only warmth and some hope in that room and we are going to make sure we make the most of that welcome.” After the meeting, Ngapuhi leader Sonny Tau said he did not believe the Labour Government had fully understood the mandate of the iwi leaders and believed that because Labour had high support among Maori politi-
cally they represented Maoridom. “One of the myths they had is that they have a significant mandate from Maori because they have the seven seats. And that’s a point. However, they are the Crown. They don’t represent the iwi.” He believed Ardern now appreciated the distinction. Ardern was new to many of the topics and had given some “diplomatic” answers in some cases, but had committed to continuing a lot of the work the iwi leaders were looking at which was pleasing. The Iwi Leaders were Ardern’s first meeting in a day in which she also met with the Maori Wardens, the mayors of Northland and Maori Women’s Welfare League. - NZME
Smith said there had been a massive slip, almost 100 metres wide, at Douglas Bluff blocking access to Haast from the south. There was also severe damage to the access road to Fox Glacier, he said. “There are 700 tourists all in Haast wanting to go south or north and they can’t go either way.” Mr Smith said they were relying on a limited supply of power. “Our emergency response team
has worked brilliantly.” The people stuck in Haast had all been provided with beds and food, he said. “The hospitality in South Western is unbelievable.” All of SH6 from Ross through to Haast Pass was closed. The stretch between Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph would remain closed overnight as a 30-tonne digger was needed to clear the slip at Omoeroa. Our Lady of the River church, located about 38km from Fox Gla-
cier on Haast Highway, was completely destroyed by wild winds and flooding. In Hokitika 700 consumers were without power as several transmission pole structures suffered significant damage. Buller Civil Defence had issued a warning yesterday advising parents to keep children away from playgrounds near flood water due to contamination, especially in Carters Beach and Granity. - NZME
Dromore’s water restrictions reduced Ashburton District Council has reduced the Level Five water restriction in place for the Dromore water supply to its previous Level Four permanent hosing ban restriction. Council is now satisfied that the scheme has stabilised, after it was found that the Dromore water plant was not keeping up with a sudden increase in demand on Wednesday.
Six injured in crash A mother and her five children have been taken to hospital – two of them in critical condition – after a two vehicle crash on a rural Whangarei road yesterday. The accident, which involved a 4x4 and a people mover, happened on Jordan Valley Rd, Hikurangi, about 1km north of Rushbrook Rd, about 3.31pm police said. Police said the driver of the 4x4 was uninjured, but all six in the people mover – a woman and her five children – suffered injuries. A 12-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were both reported to be in critical condition, while the woman and a five-yearold boy and eight-year-old girl were all in a serious condition. A nine-year-old girl was reported to have moderate injuries. - NZME

Storm traps 700 people in cut-off Haast The West Coast town of Haast was cut off in the aftermath of Cyclone Fehi leaving 700 people stuck in the township and 115 motorists stuck near Fox Glacier. The large-scale wreckage from severe weather included the destruction of a house and church in Haast, while further south a bridge had collapsed in Gore. A leak in the water main was located and repaired later that day, and combined with residents’ efforts to conserve water, the scheme is now providing water to all connected properties.
“Although the leak had been fixed two days ago, the scheme needed time to replenish its levels and we needed to closely monitor the supply in case there were any other issues. “We are now satisfied that we can ease the restriction back,” council assets manager Andrew Guthrie says. “We would like to thank the Dromore community for their
efforts in conserving water during these past few days, and would encourage them to continue observing good waterwise practices.” The Dromore scheme is now on a Level Four restriction, which restricts residents from using a hose. They are permitted to water their gardens using a bucket or watering can.
Auckland’s newest attraction will be on display again this weekend with a distinctly Waitangi flavour. A second light show has been created using the Vector Lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The light and sound show will tell the story of Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier Island) and begans last night at 9pm. It will be repeated every hour until midnight each night until Waitangi Day on Tuesday. The fully solar-powered lights were switched on for the first time last weekend. Vector has has installed 90,000 LED lights and 200 floodlights, which are powered by 630 panels installed on top of North Wharf in Wynyard Quarter. - NZME
Police car rammed A 23-year-old has been arrested after a police chase in which he hit a police car with the stolen car he was driving. A police spokesperson said police tried to stop a stolen vehicle in Opunake at about 8.45am yesterday. But the driver failed to stop and fled from police. A short pursuit ensued and was abandoned a short time later when a police car was hit. No police staff were injured. The driver was taken into custody without incident. The driver appeared in New Plymouth District Court yesterday charged with burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. - NZME
Teen hit by car A 14-year-old was hit by a car in Red Beach and is now in Starship children’s hospital in Auckland. A police spokesperson said the crash happened on Millwater Parkway, Red Beach, yesterday. The serious crash unit was on the scene at about 4.10pm. Three St John vehicles attended the scene and an alert was issued that the patient was in a critical condition. - NZME
Historic hall ‘dangerous’ People have been warned to stay well back from a historic but “dangerous” Auckland Sunday school hall whose repairs no one has been willing to finance. Developer View West wants to build several apartments within the St James church building on the corner of View and Esplanade Rds in Mt Eden, Auckland. It also wants to demolish the hall fronting Esplanade Rd and build more apartments there. Both buildings have a B-grade heritage listing with the Auckland Council. - NZME

This is the third and final part of a feature on the growing trend of pre-teens signing up to social media sites and the potentially detrimental implications for mental health. Reporter Susan Sandys finds parents are the ones left to make the choice on when they allow their children to join, but that is easier than it sounds.
KEEPING KIDS SAFE – Talk to children about rules around when they can join social media sites. The age of eligibility for most sites is 13, and it goes against the advice of parenting experts to join before this. – Use privacy settings to keep personal information private. – Teach your children to think before posting, and explain they must gain permission from their friends or family before posting pictures, videos or any other content that does not involve them directly. – Inform them about the risks of being online, including cyberbullying, sexting and strangers making contact. – Don’t be afraid to talk about peer pressure and how they should not be persuaded to post inappropriate content, and let them know they can talk to you if they feel uncomfortable about something. – Consider parental controls and filtering software. – Set down rules around screen time.

id Canterbury mum Elizabeth* believes parents have been overwhelmed to some degree by the growth of social media. She is friends and a follower of her children on Facebook and Instagram, yet it is not possible to be aware of all the different exchanges they are involved in, she said. Elizabeth has three teenage daughters, and for one of them, 14-year-old Tia*, social media is not a big deal. She has a Facebook account but prefers to doodle in her sketch pad. However, she believes 13-year-old Jessica* and 18-yearold Rose* are addicted. For Rose, a high-achieving creative young woman, there is a “constant stimulation of the dramas of life” as her phone is rarely out of her hand. She will often either be posting about what has happened in her own life or commenting on what has happened in someone else’s. Jessica on the other hand spends about five hours per day on social media, often while doing other internet-based activities such as watching a movie. “It can create a lot of tension for them, they get more upset in friendships and relationships because they are blurting and not thinking about what they are saying,” Elizabeth said. She believes a house rule to turn off phones at night probably did not go far enough. In hindsight she wished she had introduced tougher screen-time limits as a condition of getting their first phones when they were 11. She feels it is too late to do this now and even having discussions about any concerns she has is difficult. “If you try and have a discussion with them, even in the most general terms, they can get very defensive, they won’t talk about it,” she said. Elizabeth is concerned about inappropriate material that can be accessed, such as self-harm pages, pornography, violence and unedited graphic news reports, and she had blocked sites from the home laptop in the past. She had not been able to do this on her children’s personal phones because she believed if she tried, they would just be able to unblock it. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Piper Hood in Methven has been on Instagram, Snapchat and Musical.ly since the age of 11. When she was 12 she shut her Instagram account down for a few months when there was some bullying in a message group she had with school friends.

Mum Robyn noticed what was going on because she is logged into Piper’s private account on her own phone, which was a condition of her daughter joining Instagram. A girl pretending to be Piper was sending intimidating messages to another member. Robyn messaged and said she knew a “tech guy” who would be able to find out who they were. The girl ended up owning up and apologising. Piper generally stays on her Snapchat and Instagram throughout the day, because she did not want to miss anything. And usually her experience was a good one, but she liked that her mum was logged into her Instagram account and at this stage did not want any more freedom than she had already. “I like that you can talk to your friends online and you can post pictures for everyone to see and that,” she said. Late last year she was at a hockey tournament and on the way back her team bumped into rugby player Sam Cane at the airport; they took a photo with him
and she posted it on Instagram, where she has 343 followers, and it got 91 likes. She has a number of Snapchat streaks going with friends and the longest was 120 days. Streaks are a feature on Snapchat, popular with kids, which illustrate the number of consecutive days you can send a snap to the same friend. Smartphones are a constant in hers and her friends’ lives, they even take them to class, where pupils are not allowed to use them. Sometimes Piper’s parents will hear the buzz of a notification after midnight with messages being sent in her friends group, however, her phone is out of bounds overnight and she is not allowed to message or text this late. Robyn is a photographer who is also on Instagram, as well as Snapchat and Facebook, and like her daughter always has her phone with her. She believes social media had its place and she follows some of Piper’s friends and they follow her on Instagram. In retrospect, perhaps those earlier years had been too soon for Piper and her
friends to be on Instagram, Robyn said, as the bullying incident had shown they were not mature enough to act responsibly. Despite the many dilemmas parents and children face online, there is also a wide range of benefits. Social media can be creative, inspiring and connecting. Mangere College student Paul Lesoa is the perfect example and could be considered the poster boy for social media. At the age of 17 he has 4771 friends on Facebook, connected to his Instagram, with an additional 1137 followers and about 1000 friends on Snapchat. “All the kids back in the day didn’t have the technology, everything is in your back pocket, a phone can do a lot to be honest,” he said. Late last year he received more than 440 likes, 64 shares and 28 comments, in support of a post he wrote in defence of South Auckland. “... the only thing that’s dirty in south is our parents’ hands who worked hard to give us the op-

portunities they didn’t have,” he wrote. It followed a post encouraging boys to “pick up our game” and treat potential girlfriends better, receiving over 2500 likes. Paul is a facilitator for a youth suicide prevention group and acknowledged social media has a bad side, in its capacity to be used by cyberbullies. However, he believes it offers a good way to help anyone who is depressed, as friends can pick up on their negative posts and direct them to the help they need. Paul’s positive experience reflects all the good things adoles-
cents get from using social media. A report by the Royal Society of Public Health in England last year found youngsters valued being able to express themselves, build identity and find emotional support. However, the researchers also found the negative effects such as impact on sleep, body image, fear of missing out and bullying outweighed the good effects, on the platforms of Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter. Only YouTube had an overall positive effect on wellbeing and mental health, as opposed to an overall negative effect. * Names have been changed

Open Country hits $1b Open Country Dairy, New Zealand’s second-largest milk processor, generated more than $1 billion of revenue last year but payments for milk rose faster than receipts from customers and profit fell. Profit was $23 million in the year ended September 30 from about $62 million a year earlier, its accounts show. Sales rose 34 percent to $1.1 billion while cost of sales gained about 44 per cent. Open Country didn’t disclose volume figures in its public annual accounts but chair Laurie Margrain said it was up on a year ago. “We’ve got more of the market than a year ago and hugely more than 10 years ago.” - NZME

Don’t pull a Monday sickie Pulling a sickie this Monday to get yourself a four-day weekend could get you sacked, the employers’ union warns, while the country’s largest workers’ union says businesses could use it as an opportunity to cut down their leave balances. Waitangi Day falls on Tuesday and those with the foresight will already have booked the Monday off to have an extended break. But that pesky in-between Monday will no-doubt have many of those rostered on wishing they could somehow wheedle their way out of work. Employers and Manufacturers Association chief executive Kim Campbell warned that workers who didn’t show up could face disciplinary action, potentially even getting the sack. “Not showing up does open the door for disciplinary action, particularly if you’re pretending to be sick – you generally need a doctor’s certificate these days so don’t try that one,” he said. “It’s irresponsible anyway ... you can’t just not show up because you want a holiday.” It was a particularly risky move in the age of social media, which had caught out wagging workers in the past. Campbell was not anticipating a great influx of sick days on Monday, however, there would inevitably be a few. A group of US chief executive officers earned 140 times more last year than the median workers at their companies, according to a survey that gives a first glimpse of newly required pay ratio disclosures. Workers at the 356 public companies included in the study received $60,000 in median compensation, Equilar said in the report released yesterday, which didn’t include CEO pay figures. Thousands of US companies will reveal the ratio for the first time in coming months, required as part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act. Supporters of the rule hope it will highlight growing income inequality and force corporate boards to rein in excessive executive compensation. Critics see the provision as a populist measure intended only to shame CEOs, saying it’s costly to calculate and difficult to compare from one industry to the next. “Since half of a company’s em-

Warning: Keep an eye on Snapchat
F
acebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat – take your pick. All four are social media platforms which play a part in forming the society that we will live in today – a society controlled by the digital age. Those of you who have followed the three-part series by Guardian reporter Susan Sandys on the impact social media is having on the younger generation will have done so with great interest as she details a large number of issues and concerns around the subject. The series wraps up in today’s edition of the Guardian, but if you’ve missed any part of it – check out our website, or old
editions of the paper, it really is a fascinating tale. As someone who grew up in the age of technological advancement, as in I was part of the age group in which a lot of these innovations were introduced, it’s been quite incredible to watch them unfold. When I first joined Facebook in my late teens, it was nothing like
the Facebook of today. I couldn’t chat with friends, or people I didn’t know, in a private space – so it was reasonably safe. Now though, I can receive a message from anyone in any part of the world and the most concerning aspect is that those same people could be nothing like who they say they are, or more importantly, what they advertise themselves as looking like. Twitter came into my world when I started out in media. I don’t see the Twittersphere, as it is affectionately known, as being a major point of concern. Its predominant use, from my point of view, is as a newssharing platform in which those who use it can get a message
out as quickly as possible with minimum input to their followers – a golden tool in the world of the media. What really changed the game, however, was the introduction of Snapchat – a tool in which users can send images or videos and do so with the knowledge that they were likely to be never seen again. And of all of the main social media platforms, it’s Snapchat which I would suggest is the most lethal for the younger generation. With its own tracking device in which people who follow each other can open up a map and see exactly where their friends are at any given point in time, it holds the most danger.
So, a message to parents, if I may. If you are monitoring your child’s social media accounts and they do have Snapchat, just make sure their location settings are changed so that they’re not visible to their friends – that way you’re safeguarding them in case the unthinkable was to happen. I’m a big social media user and would never say it’s not a great tool of communication and information gathering, but it does come with safety warnings that everyone should be aware of. As technology advances and these platforms continue to evolve and develop, it will be our responsibility to ensure that our safety levels rise with the demand.

Will the birthday boy be spoiled this year? M
y mother was obviously a genius, or Scots, or both. She could create a meal out of leftovers and feed four ravenous street urchins and still have a little bit leftover for what we came to call surprise pie. We knew it was secondhand leftovers because it was in a pie, thus hiding its true contents. In went any form of leftover meal that had been hibernating in the fridge since the last surprise pie. You know, tomato sauce became one of my most faithful companions when we had surprise pie. I think it managed to suppress the aromatic smell of curried sausages, nestled amongst broad beans, and the intriguing flavour of boiled cabbage mixed with mutton and hardened spaghetti bolognaise. My mother also managed to cleverly combine two significant events in my life each year and tell me how lucky I was. See this week is my birthday (significant event number one) and no matter how much I try, I can’t erase the memory of having my present-openinganticipatory-fever-pitch-dreams crushed by the reality of what lay before me after I had shredded the flimsy wrapping paper from Woolworths, cobbled together using leftover Christmas sticky tape. The reason for the dreamcrushing was that school had started for the year (significant event number two) and this is where my mother really outdid herself and in a stroke of annual genius-ness, combined these events. I clearly remember looking at a cylindrical shape, hoping that it was surely an Action Man. It was about the right length and width, but the fact it was round made me hope it included the scuba diving set he had, so I could play underwater rescue during my once-a-week bath. Tearing into it I could almost taste the soapy bath water as I went diving with my new best friend and we helped James Bond escape a damaged submarine, but no, it was a pencil case. Then I discovered the smaller parcel next to it contained not a sword and a telescope for Action Man, but was in fact two HB pencils and a sharpener. I am convinced my mother would pester the school on the last day of term, not to find out

who my next teacher was, not to read my report about what I thought were hilarious misbehaviours, but to snaffle a stationery list to guide her birthday shopping for me. Did I get other gifts? – Yes most definitely. The standard $5 from Nana and Grandad, a souvenir from some unknown country from an aunt who had sailed all around the world for five years, and a 50c lolly mixture from my older brother and sister, with the aniseed wheel missing. Socks, undies and grey shorts all featured on a regular basis, all followed by that very wise insight – “you could wear those to school today!” Yip, I can spot a 1B4 gift-wrapped from 10 paces away. The gift unwrapping always took place in a rush because it was the start of the new school year and Dad had to be at work by eight. He would hover near the door as I tore into a bizarre-looking present that turned out to be a new lunchbox and a Star Wars ruler, nodding as if he knew what the gift was going to be. Mum would chime in – “it’s Star Wars, I know how much you like Star Wars”. Truth was I had been nagging her to go to see Star Wars six months ago, but we didn’t have the money and now it was gone from the movie theatres and all I did was rehash school mate conversations about the film, as if I had been. But my eighth birthday was different. It was rule in our house, when you turned eight you got a new bike (this also meant you now biked to school every day no matter what the Manawatu weather was doing). And so it passed
that I too received a brand new Raleigh Rodeo, complete with bell and white tyres. My older brother and sister eagerly wanted to help me ride it and took me into the alleyway that ran alongside our property. It was unsealed and had those bars at either end so a car couldn’t get through, but bikes and pedestrians could. My enthusiastic siblings lined me up and launched me forward like a North Korean missile, straight towards the steel

I went down, much to the mirth of my brother who I’m sure was munching on an aniseed wheel and grazed my knees, my hands and my brand new bike! My mum was rather relieved that I had not bled on to my brand new grey shorts and Roman sandals. She had wisely said to me when I unwrapped them: “You could wear those to school today!”

Celine Dion coming to NZ The emojis have spoken – Celine Dion will be touring Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 10 years. Hints of the tour began earlier this week with a stream of emoji-tweets representing some of Dion’s biggest hits including My Heart Will Go on and The Power Of Love, posted by promoters Frontier Touring. The vocal powerhouse then confirmed her LIVE 2018 tour yesterday in a video message. The tour will kick off in Sydney at the end of July before hitting Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Auckland. Her Auckland concert is scheduled for August 11 at Spark Arena with her other shows preceding that. - AAP

Air strike cripples hospital A hospital built under 20m of rock in a rebel-held part of central Syria has been wrecked by a powerful air strike, medical sources say. They say the hospital in Hama province – regarded as one of the best protected in the country – was put out of service by the strike. No casualties are reported but aid workers say it is the worst in a wave of attacks against hospitals in Syria. Meanwhile the UN says aid is no longer getting through to besieged areas. The Al Maghara cave hospital in the town of Kafr Zita was
hit by five missiles in the strike, says the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), an international coalition of medical charities. “It’s widely believed to be the most secure hospital in Syria,” UOSSM spokesman Avi D’Souza told the BBC. D’Souza said the reason there were no deaths seemed to be that staff and patients left when they heard incoming jets. The group says the facility – which serves a population of 50,000 people and performs about 150 major surgery procedures a month – suffered extensive damage.
Causing such damage is only possible through advanced bunker-buster missiles, the UOSSM added. “This is the most serious attack in a larger campaign against hospitals,” Mr D’Souza said. The group recorded 14 strikes against medical facilities in Syria in January alone. It is not clear who carried out the latest strike, but Syrian government warplanes or those of its ally Russia have been stepping up attacks in rebel-held areas. Both Syria and Russia have consistently denied targeting
civilians. Also, the United Nations’ Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Syria warned diplomatic efforts to get aid into the country had become “totally impotent”. “The last convoy to a besieged area was at the end of November,” said Jan Egeland. “We need an end to the fighting and we need to have Russia, Turkey and Iran again get deescalation.” Conditions are at their worst since 2015, he said. Aid convoys must be approved by the Syrian government and armed groups have to offer security guarantees. - BBC
Dunst pregnant Kirsten Dunst has confirmed she is pregnant with her first child. It marks the first time Dunst has gone public with her pregnancy, following weeks of speculation. She is engaged to Fargo co-star Jesse Plemons who played her on-screen husband in the 2015 series. The Wimbledon and Marie Antoinette actress and Plemons, 29, were engaged last year. She previously said she was thinking about settling down and starting a family. Dunst told Marie Claire magazine last year: “It’s time to have babies and chill. You know what I mean?”
Earth’s magnetic poles ‘may be about to flip’ The Earth has a fierce molten core that generates a magnetic field capable of defending our planet against devastating solar winds. The protective field extends thousands of miles into space and its magnetism affects everything from auroras to power grids, the Daily Mail reports. But this field, so important to life on Earth, has weakened by around 15 per cent over the past 200 years. And this, scientists claim, could be a sign that the Earth’s poles are about to flip. In a new report, Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, claims there are signs of a reversal. He says if this reversal happens, it is likely to render some areas of the planet “un-
inhabitable” by knocking out power grids. His comments were made in an in-depth Undark report written by Alanna Mitchell. Mitchell writes: “The dangers: devastating streams of particles from the sun, galactic cosmic rays, and enhanced ultraviolet B rays from a radiation-damaged ozone layer, to name just a few of the invisible forces that could harm or kill living creatures.”
Historically, Earth’s North and South magnetic poles have flipped every 200,000 or 300,000 years. However a flip is currently overdue as the last one was about 780,000 year ago. The latest satellite data, from the European Space Agency’s Swarm trio which monitors the Earth’s magnetic field, suggests a flip may be imminent. The satellites allow researchers to study changes building at the Earth’s core. Their studies suggest molten iron and nickel are draining energy out of the core near where the magnetic field is generated. While scientists aren’t sure exactly why this happens, they describe the type of “restless activity” that could suggest the magnetic field is preparing to flip.
If a switch happens, we would be exposed to solar winds capable of punching holes into the ozone layer. The impact could be devastating for mankind, knocking out power grids, radically changing Earth’s climate and driving up rates of cancer. “This is serious business”, Richard Holme, Professor of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences at Liverpool University told MailOnline in an earlier interview. “Imagine for a moment your electrical power supply was knocked out for a few months – very little works without electricity these days.” The Earth’s climate would change drastically. In fact, a Danish study believes global warming is directly related to the magnetic field rather than CO2 emissions. - NZME

Crippling water crisis worsens The pictures are a graphic visual reminder of a water crisis every day inches closer to full catastrophe. Satellite images of South Africa’s tourist hub of Cape Town reveal just how close the city is to running out of water as its biggest dam shrinks daily. April 16 will see the water crisis in Cape Town reach full-on disaster. That’s Day Zero: the day the city’s taps will run dry, cutting off water to its four million residents, officials say. Satellite images from Nasa show the Theewaterskloof Dam, Cape Town’s largest water reservoir, at dangerously low levels, depleted daily thanks to the drain of population growth, climate change and a drought with seemingly no end, officials say. The massive dam has a capacity of more than 480,000 megalitres of water, accounting for more than half of all the water in the area’s dam system, but right now, it’s contents are disappearing before the city’s eyes. Last week it was 14 per cent full. This week, it’s 13 per cent. In 2014, Theewaterskloof was near full capacity, but the region went into drought in 2015 as rainfall fell to just 325mm, Universe Today reports.

Democrat playing Candy Crush A Democratic congresswoman was caught on camera playing Candy Crush during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address. Michigan Rep. Brenda Lawrence tapped her way through the game on her iPhone while Donald Trump was speaking about revamping America’s international trade posture, the Daily Mail reports. New Jersey Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman was reading responses to her tweet about the president’s alleged “white nationalism” while he talked. And Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty was inspecting a proposed press release reacting to the speech – while it was barely a third of the way through. Beatty’s spokesman told DailyMail.com she had read the entire speech already, and wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. “That State of the Union is put out an hour in advance so Democrats and Republicans can read along,” the spokesman said. “And while the speech was going on, she was putting together a statement in response.” The other two congresswomen’s offices, however, didn’t offer any explanation. In brief Castro’s son dead The oldest son of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro has killed himself after months of treatment for depression, state media reported. He was 68. Official website Cubadebate said that Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart had been in a “deeply depressed state”. A brief note read on state television said his treatment had “required a hospitalisation regime then outpatient follow-up”. The eldest son of Cuba’s former leader was known for his distinctive beard and resemblance to his father, earning him the nickname Fidelito or Little Fidel. - AP

Theewaterskloof Dam. It is the largest dam in the Western Cape Water Supply System and levels are seriously low. In 2016 it got worse, with 221mm of rain. In 2017 the area received a scant 157mm of rain. As of January 29 this year the Cape Town area’s six reservoirs were at just 26 per cent of their total capacity. And Theewaterskloof Dam is in the worst shape. Some 70 per cent of water used in Cape Town is consumed in homes, authorities say.
Day Zero, set for April 16, would occur if the average level of all reservoirs serving the city falls below 13.5 per cent. The average level has dropped to 26 per cent. Day Zero’s exact date changes on a weekly basis, but Cape Town’s mayor warns if current consumption levels of water continue, the disaster plan will swing into action sooner rather
than later. Taps will be turned off everywhere except at hospitals and at communal taps. Residents, with nothing in their homes to drink, wash or bathe in will have to collect water from about 200 collection points in the city. Already they have had daily water limits cut to 50 litres per person from 87 litres. - NZME

Dog approved for benefit It’s not always easy to find work. Just ask Ryder – he was apparently laid off from his job at a restaurant chain in Michigan, United States. So the state approved him for $360 per week in unemployment benefits. Just one problem: He’s a dog. “So my dog Ryder gets approved for unemployment benefits of $360 per week,” Ryder’s owner, Michael Haddock, wrote on Facebook. He added: “Not sure what he is going to do with the money but should be interesting. I knew he was clever but he surprised me on this one.” Haddock, an attorney in Saugatuck, Michigan, said he received a letter last weekend from the State of Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency addressed to his dog – sort of. It was sent to “Michael Ryder.” Haddock said he was surprised to see it, but I had a good laugh, actually.” But the mix-up may not be so comical. Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency announced earlier this week that it is putting together a special team to catch phony claims, according to news reports. Clashes in Maldives Political opponents of the Maldives government clashed with police on the streets of the capital yesterday after the Supreme Court ordered the release of imprisoned politicians, including an expresident living in exile in Britain. Hundreds of people celebrated in Male by waving the country’s flag after the court overturned verdicts against ex-President Mohamed Nasheed and an ex-vice president jailed after trials that were internationally condemned. The court said in its ruling the guilty verdicts had been influenced by the government. Police dispersed the crowds from the streets using pepper spray and batons. Rocks were thrown at police and at least one injured officer was seen being carried to a hospital. - AP

The letter from Michigan UIA stated that Michael Ryder had worked for Kruse and Muer, an upscale seafood res-
taurant chain in Michigan. He was approved for 20 weeks of unemployment benefits at $360 per week, it stated. A spokeswoman for the restaurant chain would not immediately comment on the situation. Haddock said he called UIA to sort it out. “I felt like back in school when I would tell the teacher that the dog ate my assignment,” he told WZZM. “I don’t think the risk management person really believed what I was telling her, and she just asked me to scan the document and send it to her.” Ultimately, the claim was denied, and Michigan UIA said it is now investigating the incident. - NZME
A girl believed to be 12 years old opened fire yesterday in a middle school classroom, critically wounding one classmate and injuring three others, authorities said. Police arrested the girl and recovered a gun after the shooting that happened just before 9am at Salvador B. Castro Middle School near downtown, said Steve Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles Unified School District police force. - AP
Murder conviction The man who drove a van into a crowd of worshippers near a north London mosque was convicted yesterday of murder and attempted murder. A jury at London’s Woolwich Crown Court deliberated for just an hour before finding 48-year-old Darren Osborne guilty of the June 2017 attack in the city’s Finsbury Park neighbourhood. A 51-year-old man, Makram Ali, was killed and 15 people were injured when a rented van ploughed into worshippers gathering after evening prayers. - AP

Users of Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre’s stadium are joining forces to fight a proposed increase in court fees. The centre’s owner, the Ashburton District Council, has signalled a 40 per cent increase in stadium fees as it drives towards moving the complex onto a 50 per cent rates and 50 per cent user funded facility. Currently users pay 40 per cent of the costs. During discussions on their long term plan, the document
that spells out how rates money will be spent over the next 10 years, the stadium fee rise was signalled – and approved by councillors. Currently court hire is $32 an hour, but the new charging regime would see this rise to $44, a 40 per cent increase. And that increase, Sport Canterbury, Mid Canterbury manager Jan Cochrane said, would see users walking away in droves. Mid Canterbury Netball has already signalled it will have to look at its playing options if the new fee structure is adopted.
Cochrane said that they will definitely not be the only ones. “This facility was built by the community as a community project and we want it to be made accessible to everyone, not just elite sports people,” she said. At last week’s user group meeting there were a lot of unhappy people from many sporting codes, Cochrane said. “Everyone understands there are always going to be maintenance and upkeep costs and that there will be small increases from time to time. “But for them to deliver this at
this cost they must understand this will affect users in all areas.” Pool fees will rise by 9 per cent and that would also impact on users. The new rates will put Ashburton as one of the most expensive community pools in New Zealand, “Councillors will have to go back to their draft budget and think about what the facility is for and who it is for.” If the higher fees were introduced, Cochrane said that rather than growing users, it would cost the council users.
As a facility the stadium was still in its infancy and there was still plenty of opportunity to grow business. Higher fees would effectively cap that, she said. “We need to work collectively, work together to get this running at capacity but if they pump up fees there will be sports that leave. “That’s the talk out there.” Cochrane said the council could expect a large number of submissions from stadium users when the long term plan was put out for consultation.

With the Pritchard Shield locked safely away in the cupboard for 12 months, Lauriston can look toward adding to their silverware haul when the Muirhead Rosebowl begins this weekend. One of Mid Canterbury cricket’s most coveted prizes, the annual competition, played for in the final stages of the cricketing season, kicks off this afternoon. So, it’s clean slates for everyone and the form books get thrown out the window – which for some sides will be a welcoming prospect. Both Allenton and Methven, who were well off the pace in the Pritchard, will be keen to put those nightmares behind them and move forward and round off the season in a positive manner. Allenton, who are the defending champions, will be able to start that process on the sidelines today as they have drawn the bye in the opening round. That comes off the back of a shock defeat at the hands of Methven last weekend – a confidence-boosting effort for the lads from underneath the mountain. They were undoubtedly buoyed by the return of Davey Maw, whose contribution of 83 played a key role in their success. Life doesn’t get any easier for them this week though – they trek into Ashburton to tackle the Tech Stags. Beaten by Coldstream last week, the Tech boys will be keen to produce consistent performances through the latter stages of the season after they’ve at times promised so much, but often failed to deliver. That responsibility rests largely on the shoulders of their experienced players and they’ll be more than aware of the threat that a

Kiwis target danger-man Warner By adrian Warren New Zealand are expecting David Warner will lead Australia in aggressive fashion in the T20 tri-series, but are intent on keeping his form slump going. With Steve Smith having a short break before the upcoming test tour of South Africa, Warner will captain the Australian T20 side in this month’s tri-series against New Zealand and England. Warner has accumulated T20 captaincy experience in the IPL, leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the 2016 title. “He’s obviously had a bit of experience in the IPL captaining T20 sides, so I’m sure he’ll be aggressive,” NZ paceman Tim Southee said. “I’m sure the Australian way will still come through under David’s captaincy.” Hard-hitting left-handed opener Warner struggled in Australia’s recent 4-1 ODI series loss to England. He scored 73 runs at an average of under 15, with a best knock of 35 and didn’t exceed 15 in any of his other four innings.
“He’s a class player, he’s shown that over a long period of time and good players don’t stay down for too long,” Southee said. “We know that we’re going to have to be on top of our game to stay on top of him.” New Zealand are second in the T20 world rankings, five places above Australia, who they meet in the tri-series opener at the SCG today. However, they are coming off backto-back home losses to Pakistan in late January. “I think the execution with the ball in those last two games probably haven’t been where we have throughout the summer,” Southee said. “That’s probably one thing from a bowling point of view that we probably will work a little bit harder on over the next couple of days in training. “We played some good cricket throughout the summer, the last couple of games haven’t been our best, but the beauty of the side is we don’t ride the emotions that can come with winning and losing.”- AAP
Australia’s inexperienced T20 pace attack have plenty of confidence heading into a tri-series in which the underachieving side will look to improve their lowly world ranking. Ben Stokes has been included in England’s one-day squad to face New Zealand “subject to any court obligations”, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced. The England allrounder has not played since police launched an investigation into an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September. He has since been charged with affray, which he denies, and is due in court later this month. Grid girls out of a job Former ‘grid girls’ have spoken out against critics to reveal details about working in motorsport. The long-standing tradition came to a controversial end yesterday when Formula One announced that ‘grid girls’ and ‘podium girls’ would be axed at all future events. The concept of ‘grid girls’ was criticised as being sexist, but former ‘grid girl,’ Chantel George, told SunSport that she “never once felt objectified in the world of motorsport”. “It brings glamour and prestige, I don’t think it’s sexist at all,” George said. “It makes the pictures look better, it gives the fans something good to see before the race, it builds testosterone and excitement for the race. “I’m gutted that I won’t be able to do it again, and for all the other girls that won’t get the opportunity I had.” George, who was a regular on the British Tour Car Championship, said the job wasn’t as glamorous as it seemed and said it was often tiring work. “You have to get up early, be at the track for many hours and are on your feet for long periods of time throughout the day. “It is hard work and it does take a lot of time.” Rosa Silverman said she wanted to be in the thick of the action when she signed up to become a grid girl eight years ago and said she felt honoured to be in the role. “We’re not just standing there looking pretty,” Silverman told the Telegraph. “The idea that we’re there merely as some kind of adornment just doesn’t wash. “As a grid girl, you’re made to feel part of the team; you’re in the garages with the team members and you’re always well looked after. “We’re told that as part of female empowerment, women should be proud of their bodies and do as they choose with them.”

Armstrong patient Toyota Racing Series championship leader Marcus Armstrong is sticking to his guns as he looks to tighten his grip on the title. The 17-year-old has demonstrated a willingness to settle for second place in races this season and bank the big haul of points that goes with it rather than risking it all battling for wins. It was a lesson he learned from his maiden crack at the series last year. Russia ban ‘justified’ Australia has backed the International Olympic Committee’s decision not to allow 28 Russia athletes who’ve had doping life bans nullified to compete at the PyeongChang Winter Games. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said there was “insufficient” evidence to prove doping offences at the Sochi 2014 Games for the athletes. In 11 other cases, CAS confirmed doping but reduced the bans to just the February 9-25 Games in South Korea. - NZME

case. “We don’t really interact much with the teams or drivers, really that’s only when we’re on the grid,” she said. Silverman said the fans were not exclusively men and she had never been on the receiving end of any male misbehaviour. “If we get some wolf-whistling and catcalling when we walk out on to the bridge, it’s no more than you’d get just walking down

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been cleared from the concussion protocol and will play in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. ews that Seta Tamanivalu has bought a one-way ticket to Bordeaux has brought a sharp re-focus on to the issue of second-tier international players leaving our shores for the big money on offer in Europe. Tamanivalu joins an everexpanding list of top class players who obviously think, or have had the word, that they won’t be making an appearance in a black jersey in Japan next year. In recent times that list includes Liam Messam, George Moala and Charlie Ngatai, while the biggest name to signal he’ll be making the jump is of course Highlander kingpin Lima Sopoaga. There’s so many issues raised here that it’s hard to know where to start. The All Blacks selectors under-

standably know what and who they want out on the paddock, and presumably all the fringe players like Tamanivula (three test caps) have been told loud and clear what they have to do to get back into royal favour, but many of those players see their way blocked by three, four or sometimes five rivals who seem to have the inside running. The way forward is clear – grab the money before there’s a glut of ageing All Blacks looking for retirement spots after the World Cup.
The rugby union must be well aware of the monumental problem that’s looming on the horizon – but not here just yet – of the ‘reserve’ cupboard suddenly being bare. Victor Vito, Ben Franks, Dan Carter, Ben Temiafuna, Jeremy Thrush, Charles Piatau, John Afoa, Ma’a Nonu, Nick Williams, Aled de Malmanche, Isaia Toeava, Bundee Aki, Willis Halaholo, Johnny McNicol, Jimmy Gopperth – these are names that you constantly read about in the English rugby press, and many of them are still on top of their game. What if Warren Gatland and Joe Schmidt got these guys and a few others together for a couple of months, in a warm-up for a gigantic battle with the current ABs? Would you be confidently putting the house on the present lot
to take them out? The top union honchos would also be looking over the fence at the netball set-up in this country right now. Our girls in black are in a basket of big hurt at the moment, and there’s many a call going out to do anything to get Laura Langman back. Langman, who was not only the glue that held the team together, but also the spark and the major driving force, left to ply her trade in Australia, and the folks at netball headquarters stuck steadfastly to their rules and said she couldn’t play for her country any more. In that sport, every country has players in leagues around the world, each and every one improving their own game for when they return to their respective national sides, but not New Zealand.
Looking from the outside in, surely it’s time for a sea change in the way things are done, allowing players to play where they want, but still represent their country. If they think their game is big enough to survive without change, well they’re wrong. The Aussies did it in rugby – changing the rules to allow superstar Matt Giteau to play in the yellow jersey again. As long as the right clauses are in there, ie the player must have a zillion test caps already, then I can’t see a problem. It’s going to happen, and probably in netball before rugby, where the player pool is so strong we can – just – afford to lose all the aforementioned players. Somewhere in between Japan 2019 and France 2023, I suspect the rule books might just be turned on their heads.

Lazarus ‘close to peak’ By Michael Guerin Recent history would suggest Lazarus’ most logical problem in tonight’s A$500,000 Hunter Cup may not be a problem at all. But it could still make for uncomfortable viewing for fans who take the $1.35 about the Kiwi champ beating Aussie’s best again. Lazarus returns from a recent bout of hoof soreness in Victoria’s richest race, with trainer-driver Mark Purdon insisting he is close enough to his peak to win. It is, after all, only three weeks since he sat three wide for the entire Fremantle Cup in Perth to only be beaten on the line in one of the great modern day pacing performances. “He was over the hoof problems he had pretty quickly after that and we have been working him as normal for the last two weeks,” says Purdon. “He has worked with Heaven Rocks this week and been his normal self so I think he will race

Mark Purdon anyway,” says Purdon. “I know what a great stayer Laz is and that is why I let him slide forward and keep Tiger Tara keen in the Inter Dominion. So if he goes hard then we won’t have to bother pressuring him.”
After what he did in the Interdom and over the 3200m of his two dazzling New Zealand Cup wins, Lazarus ranks as one of the great pacing stayers ever, but sitting parked in a searing 2760m mobile still sounds a brutal way to win, especially if you are only getting a $1.35 dividend. But the reality is we know Lazarus can sit parked outside Tiger Tara and beat him and Lennytheshark couldn’t run past Heaven Rocks when he had a cold sit on him two starts ago so might need Lazarus to under-perform to run past him. Still, unless you are a very big punter or an adrenalin junkie, the 35 per cent profit margin doesn’t add up compared with the 100 per cent profit you were getting for more or less the same bet during the Inter Dominion when Lazarus was undoubtedly at his absolute peak. So for some it might be a watch and wow race rather, with the best actual bet probably Lennytheshark for a place. - HRNZ
