THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
One of New Zealand’s leading harness racing drivers, Methven’s Ricky May, has been rushed to Dunedin Hospital after a shocking mid-race incident at Omakau yesterday. May collapsed in the sulky when driving favourite A G’s White Socks in front in the day’s feature race the Central Otago Cup. May fell backwards seemingly unconscious in the sulky while the horse continued on and then fell to the track, all live in front of the big crowd and televised around Australasia. The race was quickly called off and medical crews rushed to work on May. It is believed a young female driver, who was not participating in the race, was one of the first people to May’s side and performed CPR on him. May spent over an hour being stabi-
lised by the local ambulance crews before being flown to Dunedin hospital. He was diagnosed as being in a critical condition and it was deemed too dangerous to airlift him immediately. The racing stewards who run the race meeting confirmed May had suffered a cardiac arrest and the remainder of the meeting was called off. May has reined nearly 3000 race winners in New Zealand, making him the third most successful driver in the industry’s history and has won our greatest race, the New Zealand Trotting Cup seven times. The Omakau meeting is the small club’s only race meeting held on this day annually. May was added to the Addington Harness Hall of Fame in 2013. His citation said he came from a prominent harness racing family, and that harness racing had “always been a
big part of Ricky’s life”. “Ricky May commenced as a junior driver in the 1976/77 season with his first win coming on Ruling River (trained by father Terry) at Orari in November 1976. “He had reasonable early success culminating in finishing fourth (14 winning drives) to Tony Herlihy in his final season as a junior driver in the 1980/81 season. “Ricky May is known for his coolness under pressure often producing a gem of a drive to obtain victory.” His vast achievements include multiple New Zealand Cups, Drivers Premiership, recording more than $2 million in combined stakes winnings during the 2009/10 season, drove 105 winners in the 2003/04 season, and drove six winners in one night alone at Addington in 1991. He has two sons and a daughter.

‘No vacancy’ sign goes up susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury campgrounds are enjoying a busy holiday period as tourists stop over and others make the district a destination in itself. “We have the no vacancy sign out during the Christmas period, we are at maximum capacity,” said Vince Singh at the Rakaia Gorge camp site. The non-powered campground is run on a non-profit basis by the Rakaia Gorge Society Incorporated, which leases land on the river’s south side from the Ashburton District Council. It takes up to about 120 people, and campers come from throughout New Zealand and the world to fish, hike, bike ride, horse ride, swim, relax, and take in the beautiful scenery. Among campers is Hellen Kroeger, a retired stain glass artist from Christchurch. The keen golfer and her small motorhome hit the road for weeks on end each summer, and the gorge is one of her favourite spots. “You meet more people when you are on your own,” she said. “Yesterday I had different neighbours to today, they knocked on my door and said do you want to come and share some coffee and Christmas cake.” Fellow campers Stu Cotty and wife Marilyn of Southbridge have been spending their summer vacation in the grounds for 15 years. “Wood pigeons and bellbirds flutter around, this is just a beautiful spot,” Cotty said. “The worst day fishing is still better than the best day at work, on a good day this is just magical,” he said. He had just a few days ago caught a trout in the river, and was hoping to soon break his 12-year salmon drought. At Mt Somers Holiday Park, new owners Georgie McLeod and husband Peter Peilua are finding after leaving office jobs in Wellington and moving here with their two young daughters, the quiet life has not been so quiet. “We couldn’t really be any busier,” McLeod said yesterday.

“There is just three or four unpowered sites left for tonight,” she added. With the Ashburton Lakes up the road, as well as Mt Sunday for Lord of the Rings fans, a community swimming pool down the road and tennis courts next door, it was a paradise for many. Ashburton Holiday Park and Lodge also has new managers on deck – Jared and Nadine Pink, who have been there since November 1. Nadine said the park was gearing up for its busiest time of year, which was this month. “We have been steady,” she said of the Christmas and New Year period. The park has almost 90 beds in backpackers, cabins, studio and lodge facilities, as well as more than 35 powered sites and more than 20 unpowered. As well as New Zealanders choosing the park as their family summer holiday destination, there had been growth in the number of overseas residents stopping over, on the back of rapid growth in international visitor num-
bers in recent years. “We have loads of one or two nighters in campervans who have just flown into New Zealand. It’s definitely a big market for us,” Nadine said. Rakaia Holiday Park and Motels co-owner Sandy Newell said over Christmas and New Year she had guests from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Many international visitors at this time and throughout the year were “first nightlast night” tourists, who chose to stay due to the campground’s proximity to Christchurch airport. They were stopping by in their campervans on the way to and from southern destinations such as Lake Tekapo and Queenstown. The Christmas New Year period had been busy, but she had not had to turn anyone away. “We have come close a couple of times, but if they didn’t want powered sites they were fine,” she said.
Effluent leak at tourist hot spot By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Tourists at the Rakaia Gorge on Inland Scenic Route 72 are being greeted with smelly leakage from the ground near a campervan effluent disposal tank. Rakaia Gorge campground manager Vince Singh is outraged at the problem, which he says is not only unsightly, but also a health risk. He estimates the disposal site, on the river’s north side, is used by about 70 to 80 motorhomes per day in the busy summer period. He believes brown water which has emerged from the ground around the underground tank is raw sewage. He said he has phoned the Selwyn District Council four times since mid-December to report the problem, but no-one had come back to him. Pooled effluent remained around the area and he believed the tank was continuing to leak. “I just find it unacceptable, raw sewage flowing around a picnic spot, especially a major tourist route, you can smell it, it’s not nice,” he said. “You can see the flies and that, it’s filthy.” The leakage had reached right

up onto a shingle vehicle accessway where tourists walked, and was also feeding into a creek which flowed into the Rakaia River, where people fished and swam. The tank was installed on the river’s northern bank last year to replace a former troublesome effluent station nearby which had
been causing problems due to overflowing. “People shouldn’t be exposed to raw sewage on holiday, and if we are putting in new systems they should be systems that work,” Singh said. While he had been happy to see the council address the situation with a new installation, it
had been plagued with problems from the start. As well as the recent issue of leakage, the new unit had been installed in the wrong spot, right near where day trippers parked their cars, meaning there was not enough room for large caravans and motorhomes to pull up to it. Additionally, it was hard to find due to poor signage. Tourists were pulling up to the former disposal site at the side of public toilets, as there is a sign there saying “Campervan Effluent Disposal Site”. However, the disposal site here is no longer operational and has been concreted over. As the sign remains there, some people have just emptied their effluent tank there onto the ground. The new unit is about 30 metres away, but is out of the line of vision, behind the toilets, with no additional signage pointing people in the right direction. Selwyn District Council could not comment on all the issues by deadline yesterday, due to relevant staff being on holiday. However, a spokesperson said council staff had been sent to clean, establish the cause of the leak and fix the problem the same day the council was notified.

Alongside the latest rescue equipment on Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade trucks, is a basic household item worth its weight in gold – dishwashing liquid. Brigade members find many a use for the soapy mix, as they did on New Year’s Eve when they had to extricate a child stuck in a swing. The boy had been playing at a Tinwald playground at the intersection of Grove Place and Catherine Street. Chief Alan Burgess said the boy had become stuck around his upper legs when the brigade was called about 1.30pm. Firefighters dismantled the swing, and then used the dishwashing liquid to aid a slippery manoeuvre out of the contraption. Burgess said dishwashing liquid not only came in handy in these types of situations, but also at more serious incidents such as car crashes. It was used on damaged vehicles to give lubrication between surfaces to enable parts to be moved around, such as in removing a windscreen to provide access to trapped occupants. Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury firefighters and police made it through the New Year’s period with few call-outs. Hinds volunteer rural fire unit had two call-outs on New Year’s Eve, one to grass burning underneath a power pole, and a second about 10pm to extinguish a rubbish fire. Sparks were becoming airborne from the fire and moving towards a pine plantation, so it was extinguished as a precaution. Ashburton firefighters were called to a false alarm at Woodhams Woolstore yesterday at 6.23am, while Rakaia firefighters attended a medical call-out about 2pm on New Year’s Day. Police reported no major incidents in Mid Canterbury on New Year’s Eve, with a spokesperson saying that overall police were pleased with crowd behaviours across the country.

hen the final assembly for the year was held at Ashburton Intermediate School, it was also the final day of school life for deputy principal Judy Jemmett. In some ways it seems a long, long road since she started her teacher training in 1966 as a 17-year-old, but in others it seems no time at all, she said. Over all those years, however, there’s never been a moment when she hasn’t loved the opportunity to spend her working day with youngsters, when she’s lost the love of teaching. If deciding to be a teacher was easy, deciding to retire was not. “It’s been very hard to make the decision to retire, it took two years. I’d planned never to still be there in my 70s but here I am,” she said. And at 71, Jemmett believes she’s done with classroom time, but admits there’s a chance the odd spot of relieving might tempt her back. She trained at a time when you were paid to train, with the trade off, of a five-year bond. Leave before your time was up and you paid back some of that money. “I didn’t break my bond, but I think I’ve more than paid it back,” she said. All of her teaching years have been spent in Ashburton schools, with Allenton her first appointment. “After five years I stopped and had my children but during that time I retrained as a pre-school supervisor for playcentre because I couldn’t just do nothing,” she said.. Five years later, with three children, one of whom was a baby, Jemmett said she was doing a variety of jobs to keep busy. Idle time didn’t sit easily and she was tempted back into teaching with a relieving position at Ashburton Intermediate. That was 1979 and the beginning of what would stretch to a 40-year association with the school that has taken her from reliever, to part-timer to full-timer and to deputy principal. “I guess I’ve devoted myself to education really and I love the intermediate kids, the emerging adolescents. It’s a special age,” she said. One of her teaching highlights was setting up a special needs unit at the intermediate just prior to becoming deputy principal in 2006. And she’s always retained a passion for working with children with challenges. “It’s very rewarding and I love these kids in spite of them doing things wrong, all kids make mistakes. You just have to be firm and
fair and never take sides.” Before the arrival of current principal Brent Gray, Jemmett spent a year as acting principal, a new challenge and one she says she enjoyed. Becoming a teacher might have been her ambition but staying on at school was not what her parents had planned. Her parents thought office work would be the best option and they were keen for her to leave school at the end of Year 10. Jemmett had other ideas. “I’ve got Win Daniels (head mistress) to thank for my going back to school for another year. She convinced my father to allow me to go back for another year.” At the end of that year Jemmett was only 16 but knew it was now or never if she wanted to train as a teacher. “I had to go before a panel and they asked if I wasn’t accepted would I apply again the next year. I said no, I’ve already had my bonus year back at school. If I don’t get in I’ll be in an office.” She was accepted and from day one of training loved everything about teaching. Now with her full-time career wrapped up, Jemmett says she prefers to say she’s ‘refizing’ rather than retiring. “One door closed but another will open, there are other opportunities out there. For me age is absolutely immaterial and now I’ll have time to do the things I haven’t had time for before.” That includes enjoying working in her large garden, something she’s had to do a superficial race around at weekends in the past. And there will be more time to read, do puzzles and she’s hoping there will be more overseas travel in the future as well. “And if I miss teaching I’ll possibly do some relieving – dangerous words. I won’t know if I’ll miss it until the kids go back to school. Right now it just feels like what it is, the school holidays.” Holiday break aside, Jemmett knows she’s cut ties. Her keys have been handed in, her desk tidied and it’s time for new ventures. “I take my hat off to all the teachers. This is more than a career, it’s a dedication and a commitment. You’re always thinking about school and all good teachers spend time reflecting on what they could do and what they could do better.” Teachers might not receive the financial rewards they should today, but that didn’t take away from the knowledge that every teacher was doing one of life’s most important jobs, preparing youngsters for life, she said.

Busy year for firefighters The year 2019 delivered another busy year for firefighters across the district. Reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay takes a look back at the major events of the year.
A
number of serious house fires dominated Mid Canterbury headlines in 2019 while burn-offs kept firefighters on their toes once again. The district moved into a restricted fire season at the start of February, meaning all fires required a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, with the district serving as a test area for a new online permitting system. Also in February, it was a fire outside of the district that grabbed headlines, with the Pigeon Valley fire burning massive areas of land near Nelson. A number of firefighters from the Ashburton District did their bit to help fight the fires, part of the hundreds of firefighters that worked to control the blaze over a number of weeks. Later in January about two hectares of stubble and a tractor and baler went up in smoke after the machinery caught fire, one of the more significant vegetation fires to hit the district as the summer wrapped up. The first of a number of house fires that caused heavy damage in the Ashburton District hit in April when a newlywed couple’s house burned down. The homeowner had come back from a trip away and lit a scented candle and took the dog out for a run for 20 minutes, coming home to find the house on fire. “The homeowner has done the right thing straight away by calling 111, but he has then gone inside to attempt to find their wedding dress and rescue the cat, which is a big no-no,” fire risk management officer Bevan Findlay said. “By the time he had gotten back out of the house the whole place was fully ablaze, so the big two lessons from this are, do not leave candles unattended and do not ever go back inside a building that is on fire.” In May there were two suspicious house fires within a week of each other, while a farmhouse in Hatfield was also destroyed by fire. On May 15 fire crews from Ashburton, Rakaia, Pendarves and Lauriston responded to the fire in the Hatfield area. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the house on Hatfield Overdale Road was well ablaze when fire crews arrived.
The iconic Brown Pub in Methven caught fire in July, grabbing national attention. At around 4pm they still had seven crews on the scene who had brought the fire under control and were extinguishing the last of the fire, he said. A day later firefighters were called to a fire at a Cambridge Street property. The fire was deemed suspicious, and was followed by another suspicious fire on Peter Street less than a week later. While police carried out investigations in relation to both fires, there was no evidence to support that the fires were linked.
Firefighters were called to the empty house on Peter Street at 8.30pm on May 21. Several crews battled the fire, and were at the scene for around two hours. Ashburton Fire Chief Alan Burgess said the fire was well involved when they began fighting it, and that the style of the building made fighting the fire a challenge. “It had false ceilings so it was a bit of a challenge to get the thing out,” he said. Burgess said at the time that having three house fires within a week was some-

what of an anomaly for firefighters. Another fire that made headlines was a blaze that threatened Methven’s iconic watering hole, the Brown Pub. The fire took place on the morning of July 2 and was responded to by fire crews from Methven, Ashburton, Rakaia and Christchurch. The Brown Pub fire was believed to have been caused by a chimney fire, and kept the main street of Methven closed for most of the day.

Motorbike wishes Brownie’s Christmas wish was to go for a ride on a Harley and local Harley-Davidson enthusiast Baldy Graham was happy to help. Brownie thought all his Christmases had come at once when Baldy rumbled up his driveway to
take him for a spin. Having to work around the odd shower or two caused a slight headache but nothing that Baldy couldn’t handle. Brownie was soon parked up on the back of the bike, looking fabu-
lous in traditional motorbike gear of a black crash helmet and leather Harley jacket. The pair had a ball, looking like extras from the movie Easy Rider as they cruised the streets of Ashburton.

Beautiful cupcakes The cupcakes baked for Dawn Lucking by Jessica Hopkins were simply amazing. Dawn could not believe her eyes when an Ashburton Guardian staff representative dropped them off to her. Jessica would have delivered the baking in person, but between her work commitments and Dawn’s schedule it proved too difficult. The brightly coloured morsels would have made a colourful addition to Dawn’s Christmas, which she shared with family.

Christmas cake to enjoy on Christmas Day Unbeknownst to Daphne Allison, husband Jim had put their names down for some home baking through Park Street. It was tears of joy all round when Irene Duff turned up on their doorstep, Christmas cake in hand. has always been a big part of her life and she carries on the tradition in her own house. “My mum passed away this year, so I am just doing what she would have done. She was always one to help out others.” Irene’s baking abilities are legendary. A few years ago Irene, together with Leanne Holmes, took out the inaugural Methven Master Chef title, so the Allisons were sure to enjoy their Christmas cake.

Greta had this to say about their visit: “What a pleasure it was to visit Lynette today, what a lovely lady. Fletcher and Spencer so enjoyed it and had lovely conversa-
tions with Lynette.” They all got on so well the trio assured Lynette they will visit again in the New Year. “Thank you for the opportunity to help brighten the day of someone in the community,” Greta said.
The Jones household was looking fabulous for Christmas Day. Christmas wish granter Katelyn Hogg made light work of removing dust and dirt from the windows of Estelle and Mervyn’s Ashburton home. The pair were very grateful to Katelyn for all her hard work.
Not content with leaving it there Katelyn visited two more homes, Bruce Mitchell and Janet Clinton both had Christmas window cleaning on their wish lists for 2019, and again it was Katelyn to the rescue. In no time flat she had finished both houses. She then headed home to have a cool drink and a well-earned rest.

■■AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES
SI glaciers turn brown NZME Icy white glaciers on New Zealand’s South Island have turned a concerning shade of caramel as a result of the bushfires burning in New South Wales and Victoria. Shocking photographs and videos shared on social media over the past 48 hours show the impact of the drifting smoke on some of the country’s magnificent and usually pristine attractions. “We can actually smell the burning here in Christchurch,” a user by the name of Miss Roho said on Twitter overnight, news. com.au reports. She shared a video of the thick smoke up on the Tasman Glacier in Mount Cook National Park, 200km west of the South Island city. Another woman, Rachel, posted photos of the “caramelised snow” near the iconic Franz Josef Glacier on January 1. “It was white yesterday,” she wrote. In satellite notes issued on yesterday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology said “extensive smoke haze” has been seen across eastern NSW and Victoria “and extends both northwards to Queensland and also extends from the north Central Coast of NSW across the Tasman Sea”.
The “caramelised” snow near Franz Josef Glacier is caused by dust from the bushfires. PHOTO SUPPLIED
The stream of haze is associated with a surface trough and cold front, the Bureau said. It’s not the first time Australia’s weather has left its mark on the glaciers in recent weeks. In a blog post on her Young Adventuress website, Liz Carlson described the surreal sight
of glaciers in the Mount Aspiring National Park in New Zealand’s Southern Alps coated “in a layer of red” dust. “It’s not uncommon to have this occur during periods of severe drought in eastern Australia,” University of Queensland geographer Hamish McGowan said.
This time, the skies above New Zealand have turned shades of yellow, orange, grey and brown. The impact has been widespread and felt in Dunedin, Oamaru, Ashburton and Kurow on the South Island, and Wellington and Auckland on the North Island.
An unexplained New Year’s Day death is the subject of a police investigation after several people were found unwell at an address in Hamilton. Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Saunders said police received a report that multiple people were unwell at an address on Casey Avenue around 3.20am on Wednesday. One person was found dead at the property and three others taken to Waikato Hospital, one in a serious condition. Saunders said a scene examination was expected to be completed yesterday and a post-mortem examination would also take place. Investigations were continuing and police inquiries would continue, Saunders said. - NZME
jured in the event. He received burns to 80 per cent of his body and is in the intensive care unit of Middlemore Hospital. His mum, Janet, and dad, Steve, have been by his side at the hospital and are grateful to all those involved in the rescue and treatment of their son, saying their efforts saved their boy and
the lives of other victims of the eruption. They have told the Whakatane Beacon that they wanted to thank the community, the hospital staff at Whakatane and Middlemore hospitals, the helicopter pilots and the White Island Tours crew. Steve Milbank said Jake was awake and talking to them. “He is still going for operations
every few days, some skin grafts, but because he has got very little skin it is going to be a long, slow process, but he is going in to have all his dressings changed and cleaned and checked.” “They are checking the work that they have done already, making sure there is no infection and tidying him up,” Mrs Milbank said.
■■ROAD TOLL
2019 road toll lower than previous years RNZ For the first time in six years, there was a reduction in the number of deaths on the road last year. At the end of the year 353 people had died on the roads, a drop of 24 compared to 2018’s road toll of 377. Assistant commissioner for road policing, Sandra Venables, said the drop was good news, but the loss of life was still far too high. “It is promising to see after years of death and serious injuries increasing on New Zealand roads, it is starting to turn around,” Venables said. “But this number is still no comfort to the people who have lost loved ones on our roads.” Duty Minister Iain Lees-Galloway echoed

Angry residents are left cleaning up the mess after a party on Tui Road saw more than 100 people turn up, ending with fights and cars being badly damaged. One family, who lived near where the party was held, was caught in the crossfire, resulting in three of their cars being smashed and two of their family members being injured. Those hosting the party told the Rotorua Daily Post they tried to do the right thing by warning neighbours they were having a party, but several people they didn’t know turned up and caused trouble. - NZME

those thoughts, saying the decrease is positive, but the number of dead is still “staggering”. “I want to acknowledge and thank all our emergency response professionals who deal first-hand with the trauma on our roads and work to save lives on a daily basis,” Lees-Galloway said. “During this busy holiday period I encourage everyone to stay focused, be patient and drive according to the conditions every time they travel. I really want everyone to arrive home safely from their holiday destinations.” Lees-Galloway said road safety is a key priority for the government. “This year more safety upgrades, like side and median crash barriers, will be rolled out across the 3000km of high-risk state highway
identified by the NZ Transport Agency. “[This year] marks the beginning of the government’s new 10-year road safety action plan, focused on greater investment in safety upgrades, driver training, enforcement, and safer speed limits.” Venables said the police would continue to focus on the key factors that led to people dying on the road. “These are not wearing restraints, being impaired or distracted, and speed,” she said. “January is one of our highest risk months on the roads as so many people are still on holiday; travelling around visiting loved ones and making the most of their time off over the summer. We want all road users to do this safely, and not end up in hospital, or worse, the mortuary.”

OUR VIEW
Call for show of leadership E
nvironmental issues on the political scene do not always capture the public’s imagination. However, as 2019 came to a close in Australia, there was huge interest in climate change, and just what action political leaders are taking. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has come across as complacent, saying – yes we are taking action, but we will not be doing anything more than what we are already doing. In the face of real anxiety growing amongst the public in cities suffocating in smoke, not to mention towns and suburbs desperately trying to ward off looming fire-fronts, this response came
across as weak and ineffective. As an Australian myself, the situation takes me back to the early 1980s, when another environmental issue captured the nation’s imagination to a similar degree. It was the proposed Franklin Dam in Tasmania. The Tasmanian Hydro Electric Commission wanted to dam the Gordon River to generate hydroelectricity, how-
ever it was in a strikingly beautiful area which provided unique habitat. Stunning full-page colour photographs of the area featured in campaign group advertisements in newspapers, something which was rare at the time, and protests gained momentum throughout the country. During the campaign, the location became a World Heritage Area, and there was even a hit song released about it – Let the Franklin Flow. Prime Minister Malcom Fraser listened to protestors but was non-committal on any refusal to damming, as was at first his rival, leader of the Labour Party Bob Hawke. But Hawke then made an
earth-shattering announcement – that under his leadership there would be no dam. So everyone knew that if they elected him, quite simply the Gordon River, which has the Franklin River as its tributary, would not be dammed. It was the moment that helped bring down the Liberal-National Coalition government at the 1983 election, and set the scene for a landslide victory and new Hawke Government to lead Australia through to 1991. Many years later, in 2008, Hawke had some prophetic words when he expressed frustration at conservatives playing politics on the issue of global warming. “I want to plead with the
conservatives... now, the conservatives, what do they go on about? They are always talking about family values. What is the greatest obligation that politicians of every party have towards their families now? To their kids, their grandkids and their kids? It is that we take action to pass on to them a planet which is inhabitable, viable and enjoyable.” Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with Australians as they grapple through the most longest and harshest of bushfire seasons. And we can only hope and pray that they get the leadership they so desperately seek on the environmental issues which are related to the crisis.

Bushfire horror grows AP Seventeen people are missing in the state of Victoria due to the Australian bushfires, Premier Daniel Andrews has said. In an update to media yesterday, he also confirmed there has been a death. There are now 10 watch and act warnings in place across the state, the second highest warning level, and about 50 fires are still burning. “I’m sad to have to report that there are at least 17 people that at this stage we cannot account for,” Daniels said. “Their whereabouts is unknown to us, plus there is one person confirmed as deceased. “Whilst Victoria Police have not been through the official identification processes, it is clear that the Roberts family have identified Mr Roberts and we send our condolences to their family and the Buchan community to whom he was so wellknown and very highly regarded. “As we get further information we’ll update you, I don’t propose to go through the 17 different location. That doesn’t serve any purpose. “They are from East Gippsland, from a number of smaller communities across East Gippsland. “That number may grow or indeed people may report to authorities or we can get to them either via mobile phone coverage or getting people into those communities. “It may be some of those people are safe but we hold very significant fears for the welfare of anybody who is missing at this time.” As the defence force arrives in the fire-ravaged community of Mallacoota, soldiers sent to rescue the stranded thousands are facing issues themselves. HMAS Choules is anchored around 1.5km offshore and is loaded with

Authorities are hoping to airlift people in need of medical assistance with hopes there will be more evacuations by sea today. The naval ship has the capacity to fit 1000 people however there are around 4000 people still stranded in Mallacoota. Blackhawk helicopters are also on their way to Mallacoota to assist. Hundreds are being plucked to safety in the fire-ravaged town of Mallacoota in east Gippsland. HMAS Choules arrived off the coast yesterday morning from Sydney and the first recovery craft was spotted shortly after
9.30am. It’s understood between 500 and 1000 people were taken from the fire-ravaged town yesterday. Authorities have less than 24 hours to move the thousands of people stranded on the NSW South Coast who face a humanitarian crisis amid looming horror fire conditions. Bushfire-ravaged communities in southern NSW will continue to try to assess the damage after seven lives and at least 176 homes were lost. Officials said the crisis is developing because there’s no fuel, no food and no power.

Dozens of apes and monkeys killed in zoo fire AP A fire raced through a zoo in western Germany in the first few minutes of the new year, killing more than 30 animals, including apes, monkeys, bats and birds, authorities said. Police said paper sky lanterns launched nearby to celebrate the arrival of 2020 were probably to blame. Several witnesses saw cylindrical paper lanterns with little fires inside flying in the
night sky shortly after midnight Wednesday near the Krefeld Zoo, Gerd Hoppmann, the city’s head of criminal police, said. “People reported seeing those sky lanterns flying at low altitude near the zoo and then it started burning,” Hoppmann said. He said investigators also found used lanterns on the ground that hadn’t burned entirely. The zoo near the Dutch border said its entire ape house burned down and more
than 30 animals — including five orangutans, two gorillas, a chimpanzee and several monkeys — were killed, as well as fruit bats and birds. Only two chimpanzees were able to be rescued from the flames by firefighters. They suffered burns but are in stable condition, zoo director Wolfgang Dressen said. The zoo said the Gorilla Garden, which is near its devastated Ape House, didn’t go up in flames and that gorilla Kidogo and six other members of his family are alive.

■■MEXICO
Sixteen dead, five wounded in prison riot AP At least 16 inmates in a central Mexico prison were killed and five more were wounded in a riot that closed out a violent 2019 for the country, authorities said. Zacatecas state security secretary Ismael Camberos Hernández told local press that authorities confiscated four guns that they believe were introduced to the Cieneguillas state prison during prison visits yesterday. He said the prison had been searched for weapons recently and no guns were found.
The melee broke out yesterday and the prison was brought under control quickly, according to a statement from the state security agency. Fifteen of the victims died at the prison and one died later at a hospital. One prisoner was detained with a gun still in his possession and the other three were found inside the prison, the statement said. Camberos said not all of the victims died from gunshot wounds. Some were stabbed and others beaten with objects. No guards or police were wounded,
Camberos said. He did not offer a possible motive, but such killings frequently involve score settling between rival cartel members or a battle for control of the prison’s illicit business. Mexico has a long history of deadly prison clashes. In October, six inmates were killed in a prison in Morelos state. In September, Nuevo Leon state closed the infamous Topo Chico prison, the site of many murders over the years. In February 2016, 49 prisoners died there during rioting when two factions of the Zetas cartel clashed.

T
he ever-present Honda Jazz has always been a popular kid in the sub-compact classroom, but it’s hard to ignore that its rival set is evolving at a rapid rate. The latest generation Swift is built on a much newer set of bones. An all-new Yaris is landing next year. The Rio is packed with tech. But, the Jazz still retains a loyal fan base. And it’s clear to see why. This Jazz, looking much like the last one, represents an update. The changes are mild, but well warranted. At its core it’s mainly a tech and spec update. Entry-level models – priced from $22,990 plus on-roads – come with Hill Start Assist, Emergency Brake Assist (fully blown Autonomous Emergency Braking is sadly absent), and most importantly of all a new touchscreen infotainment system. This is the jewel in the crown of the 2020 Jazz update; a touchscreen that aims to make good for the infotainment sins of the past.
Sized either as a 6.2in or 6.8in system depending on the model you select, the Pioneer-sourced unit sports a reverse camera, voice control, and Apple CarPlay as standard. The rest of our Jazz’s cabin reveals the other notable 2020 update – splashes of orange. Each model from the RS above this dosage of visual Vitamin C. The addition might sound a little corny (or fruity?) on paper, but it does the trick in revamping a relatively dark cabin. Orange stitching proudly frames the leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear-knob, plastic highlights feature on the door cards and passenger-side dash, and patches of cross-hatched orange fabric on the seats and doors weave it all together. The RS comes with the added bonus of re-calibrated steering and sports suspension, which it uses to good effect without compromising ride quality.

Charging into history
B
rent Sutton believes his Chrysler Valiant Charger is a milestone car. “Todd Motors built only 98 cars. It was focused on Mitsubishi then, we had the fuel crisis and New Zealand’s love of big six cylinders was ending as the Japanese took hold.” Mitsubishi correspondence confirmed his car was in the final batch of 10 built. “They never had a build date, only a finalise date, and Mitsubishi confirmed they were never issued in sequence.” Paperwork also confirms: “This was the last Charger finalised, on August 24, 1976.” He’s had a few heated debates about that detail, but it’s a bit academic, as it seems this is the only VIN from the last 10 that’s still on the road. So, last Charger it is. Sutton bought it 11 years ago. “My dad was a J-Force vet, and when he returned after the end of occupation he became one of the early bonded licensed motor vehicle dealers.” “We grew up with American cars. Dad acquired the PMs’ cars – we had Norman Kirk’s, Rob Muldoon’s. He’d then on-sell. “We grew up in Chev Impalas, Ford Limiteds, Pontiac Parisienne, the mainstay of the ministerial fleet. Occasionally, rarely, a Chrysler-produced coupe came through and the build, the quality, was better than GM or Ford.” So, as an adult, Sutton focused on Chrysler but he has also been the owner of a 1953 Willys Jeep station wagon and a 1947 Windsor. “My wife was pregnant, and I wanted a classic that would be good for family;
something a bit safer than a car with suicide doors. He liked the shape of the Charger. “It’s iconic, and I recall seeing them as I grew up. I was looking for one of these and found a genuine one-owner, 70,000km one in the South Island, but I hadn’t sold the other car.” He found this one online. “She was pretty rough.” He had to restore the • doors, Latestbonnet faceliftand boot, and give it a full• paint and panel. The 15,000km paint was the only job didn’t do himself. • he2.8L Turbo Diesel He also had to rebuild the engine. The wheels were factory steel, and the car now has Dodge alloys off a genuine
American Dodge Charger. “Five-slot jelly-bean wheels from the period,” says Sutton. He upgraded the manifold and carb for better performance. There are some nice details in the car, like the flip-up vanity in the glovebox, and the hard-to-get curved mudflaps and rear window louvres. There’s a large steering wheel but no power steer. “It doesn’t need it, it only weighs 1.4 tons,” he says. The car is propelled by a 4.3-litre 186kW engine that he says isn’t thirsty. “Well, I run a dual-barrel Holley carb
with two spring systems, so for the second barrel to kick in you have to push the accelerator hard.” He says it’s a very free-revving engine – it certainly sounds relaxed around town, it’s idling at 1000rpm in fourth at 50km/h, so he’s usually in third below 55km/h – but change down in the four-speed manual, press the accelerator pedal hard, and you can feel a cough as the second carb kicks in and it’s suddenly a different, and far more aggressive beast. Would he sell it? “Only at the right price! But I’ve got no plans to, unless someone makes me an offer I can’t refuse ...”

Macan – a true sports car
P
orsche completes the Macan series with a distinctly sporty model. The new Macan GTS launches with a powerful engine, performance-oriented chassis, characteristic design and enhanced equipment. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine delivers 280 kW (380 HP) – an increase of 15 kW (20 HP) compared with the predecessor model. Combined with the newly adapted PDK dual-clutch transmission and the optional Sport Chrono package, the Macan GTS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, three tenths faster than before. It has a top speed of 261 km/h. Among other things, the new member of Porsche’s compact SUV family has earned the abbreviation GTS, which stands for Gran Turismo Sport, due to its outstanding driving dynamics. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping control system has been specially tuned. The chassis has also been lowered by 15 millimetres for greater lateral dynamics. Adaptive air suspension is optionally available with chassis lowering by a further 10 millimetres. Combined with the standard 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels and the generously sized cast iron brakes (360 x 36 millimetres at the front, 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear), the
new Macan GTS impresses with the agility and responsiveness of a true sports car. As an option, deceleration can be further improved by means of the Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) with tungsten carbide coating or the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). Acoustically, the standard sports exhaust system specifically adapted to the GTS accentuates the driving pleasure in the new Macan GTS. A 2.9-litre V6 engine is at the heart of the sound experience. Its Central Turbo Layout, with two turbochargers arranged in the inner V of the engine, allows particularly direct re-sponsiveness. The maximum torque of 520 Nm (plus 20 Nm) is available over a wide range from 1750 to 5000 rpm. The new Macan GTS also emphasises its exceptional sporty status visually. The standard Sport Design package with new front and rear trim and striking side skirts lends the car a characteristic appearance. The front apron and front section are characterised by black painted elements – a distinguishing feature of all Porsche GTS models. The LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and the three-dimensional rear lights with LED light bar are also darkened. The red brake calipers and the trim strips in high-gloss black also emphasise the high-performance appearance.

■■SMART DEVICES
How to stop smart devices spying on you AP Did someone invite a spy into your home over the holidays? Maybe so, if a friend or family member gave you a voice-controlled speaker or some other smart device. It’s easy to forget, but everything from internet-connected speakers with voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa to television sets with built-in Netflix can be always listening – and sometimes watching, too. As with almost all new technology, installing such devices means balancing privacy risks with the conveniences they offer. The research firm IDC estimates worldwide shipments of 815 million smart speakers, security cameras and other devices in 2019, up 23 per cent from 2018. Many of the sales are for gifts. You could sidestep the risks altogether by returning the devices right away. But if you decide to keep them — and the artificial intelligence behind them — there are a few things you can do to minimise their eavesdropping potential. The speakers listen and watch
Smart speakers such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home let you check weather and appointments with simple voice commands. Fancier versions come with cameras and screens. Many of these devices listen constantly for commands and connect to corporate servers to carry them out. Typically, they will ignore private chatter and transmit sound recordings only when you trigger the device, such as by pressing a button or speaking a command phrase like “OK Google”. Some gadgets also have a mute button to disable the microphones completely. But there’s no easy way for consumers to verify those safeguards. In one case, the Alexa assistant in an Echo device misheard background conversation as a command to send the chatter to an acquitance – and so it did. One more catch: Voice commands sent over the internet are typically stored indefinitely and may include conversations in the background. They can be sought in lawsuits and investigations. Reputable companies let you

especially if you have prankster kids – or teens who might want to sneak someone in. About those tvs Many smart TVs and TV streaming devices come with mics for voice-activated playback controls and video search. That means having audio snippets transmitted over the internet. The same warnings for smart speakers apply here. There’s a simple fix if you aren’t using the internet features on your smart TV: Just don’t connect the TV to your Wi-Fi in the first place. Of course, this won’t work if you’re not using a separate gadget for streaming video. Toys that talk Kids might get a kick out of dolls and other toys that talk back. But if the toy is connected to the internet, pay attention to how much control it’s giving parents and whether it’s letting kids connect to the outside world. And be sure to install the latest apps and other software updates, as they may come with fixes for flaws that can otherwise be exploited by hackers.

Online security cameras let you check in on your pets or kids when you’re not home. Amazon’s Ring doorbell lets you check who’s at the door without getting up. Here’s the rub: If you can view video on an app, it’s possible that a skilled hacker can, too. When you use the same password at multiple services, a hacker stealing your password from one place can try it on the camera service, too. So don’t reuse passwords. When available, enable two-factor authentication, which requires you to enter a temporary code sent as a text to ensure it’s you. Again, you might want to turn the camera to face the wall when you’re home. Are smart locks smart? Smart locks let you unlock doors with an app, so you can let in guests even when you’re not home. Burglars might try to hack the system, though it’s often easier for them to just break a window. As a precaution, disable any capabilities to unlock doors through a smart speaker voice command,

review and delete your voice history, Amazon now lets you request automatic deletions after three or 18 months — but you need to set that up, and there’s no option to keep Amazon from saving your command history at all. Until recently, tech companies allowed employees and contractors to review the voice interactions for quality control — and some of those details leaked. Following a backlash, many companies are at least making it clearer and easier to opt out of human review. Pay attention to your choices. If you have kids, set up a passcode for shopping if your speaker allows it. Otherwise, it can be child’s play for a kid to order toys and other goodies through Alexa. As for those screen models, many also have cameras for video chats. When you’re not using the device, consider turning it around to face the wall, especially in the bedroom and other private settings. Or stick a bandage or some tape over the camera. It shouldn’t be recording, but why tempt fate? Security with security video

Two more years. That’s how long motorists have to put up with the narrow, windy and dangerous stretch of road that passes for a main highway between Puhoi and Warkworth. By the summer of 2021, the drive north will be smoother and safer when the new $710m fourlane highway is extended from the Johnstones Hill Tunnel to just past Warkworth. But having added another new leg to the drive north started under National, that’s it under the Labour-led Government, which has all but abandoned big motorway projects in favour of a big safety improvement programme to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries. Unless, of course, some of the $6.8 billion Finance Minister Grant Robertson has dangled before voters in election year for transport projects goes to extending the highway from Warkworth to Wellsford. There’s also the possibility of the Government going ahead and moving Auckland’s port to Marsden Pt, which could bring forward a four-lane highway from Auckland to Whangarei. Automobile Association spokesman Barney Irvine laments politics getting in the way of SH1 north, saying it never leads to a good result. Irvine said the AA is keen to see more four-laning of the highway north, saying a staged approach was best, probably starting in the north and working down. “After all, this is Northland’s economic lifeline – but like any project, it has to stack up. It has to make sense from a safety and
Dome Valley, north of Warkworth, is getting safety improvements. transport perspective, and it has to be affordable. “We were really disappointed to see the Whangarei-Port Marsden highway held back, and the sooner we can make a start on it, the better,” Irvine said. For now, the only work under way immediately north of Warkworth is $35m of safety improvements along the dangerous stretch of road through Dome Valley. Every region has its black spots with scalloped skid marks, dotted with white crosses. Just north of Warkworth, up a narrow windy hill, it’s Dome Valley, known as the “Killing Fields”. Since 2000 it has claimed 36 lives and left 102 people with serious injuries. Last Christmas, Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter held a media conference at Dome Valley to announce flexible median and side barriers will
be installed to prevent head-on crashes and avoid hitting something hard like a pole, tree or ditch. The road shoulders will be widened and intersections improved. Since then, road widening and retaining walls have been constructed at the southern entrance to Dome Valley. Road widening has allowed for a right-turn bay into Sheepworld and turnarounds at Sheepworld and Christine Place, and road side and centre median barriers will be completed by mid 2020. The second section of the safety project, south of Wayby Valley Road, got under way in September with a widened centreline, flexible centre safety barriers and roadside barrier improvements, due for completion in 2020. The remaining safety improvements will get under way in stages from March next year with the project due for completion in late 2021.

Te Akau team on a roll
Telegraph next on the agenda
The winning run of trainer Jamie Richards and the Te Akau Racing team continued at Tauranga yesterday when Byzantine scored over 1400m in rating 72 company. Richards currently sits atop the National Trainer’s Premiership ladder with a total of 61 wins, nine clear of Cambridge conditioner Stephen Marsh and has been in a purple patch of form of late that saw him produce Prise De Fer to win the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Savabeel four-year-old Byzantine has proven to be a bit of a head-scratcher for Richards since winning stylishly in just his second start as a two-year-old, mixing his efforts at times but always looking to have the ability to progress through the grades. A winning run over 1200m in a similar grade at Hastings last start showed he was back to his best and he franked that victory with another professional display in the hands of Opie Bosson. Sent forward to sit outside the pace by Bosson, Byzantine found a good kick when challenged in the run home before holding out a late charge from Salt Bay to score by a neck and register his fourth career victory from just 11 starts. “He got a lovely run in the race even though it was only a small field,” stable representative Libby
Byzantine with Opie Bosson aboard get to the line at Tauranga yesterday. Richards said. “He won well at Hawke’s Bay last time and we were very happy with him. “The weight (60kgs) was a question mark but he ran to the line well. “He’s putting together a good record although he has been a little difficult at home so it’s good to
see him get a win for the team.” A full brother to Byzantine will be offered through the Little Avondale Stud draft during Book 1 at the National Yearling Sale at Karaka later this month. Richard’s stable star Probabeel will create plenty of attention at Awapuni on Saturday when she has her first start in New Zealand
as a three-year-old in an agegroup 1400m event. The 2019 Karaka Million 2YO (run over 1200m) winner is fresh from a three-start Australian spring campaign where she finished a good second to Funstar in the Gr.1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at the Randwick course back in October.
Cambridge trainer John Bell has indicated stable star Julius has pulled up well from his exertions in winning the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day and will now be set for a second Group One title. The win represented a fairytale result for those connected to the horse after he was retired due to a serious tendon injury just over twelve months ago before returning to the track late last year after making a near miraculous recovery. Twenty-four hours on from the win Bell is closely monitoring his stable star who he will now set for the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham on January 18. “He is a very happy horse and appears to have pulled up well,” Bell said. “We will be keeping a close eye on him but it will be business as usual as we build up to Trentham. “He will do plenty of work in the pool, on the walker and the track where required. “That has been the pattern with him so there’s no real reason to change that.” A winner of nine of his 16 starts, Julius sits as a $6 second favourite on the Fixed Odds market for the Telegraph behind Australian mare Winter Bride ($4).
On The Rocks charges back to winning form Classy customer On the Rocks is on the road to defending his Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) title after a comprehensive fresh-up performance in the New World Summer Cup (1400m) at Tauranga. Off the scene and gelded since contesting the Gr.1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and Gr.2 O’Shea Stakes (2200m) in Brisbane during a disappointing Queensland winter campaign, On the Rocks went into Thursday’s contest off
the back of an exhibition gallop with stablemate Harlech at Matamata a fortnight ago. Co-trainer Pam Gerard had expressed confidence in his chances before the race as he was facing only two rivals, although he was carrying clear topweight of 61.5kgs in the contest that was to serve as a lead-up to the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on January 18. Content to sit pat as the pace unfolded, rider Michael McNab
let On the Rocks slide around to a challenging position entering the straight and he was simply too good in winning stylishly by three-quarters of a length. “He is class,” McNab said. “I probably ended up getting there (front) too soon on him, but under 61.5kgs, it was a good effort. “He’s a really nice horse and I think he’s up to the goals they have for him. “I’ve had a bit to do with him,
riding his work and got to know him and he rates himself. “He knows he’s a good horse and when he gets to the mile at Trentham, against good horses and off a good tempo, he should unleash really well.” Gerard was also pleased to see the Alamosa gelding put plenty of dash into the performance. “I guess he had to do that today, with what he’s got coming up and it’s great to see him back,” Gerard said.

■■AUCKLAND CUP
Starter accepts blame for Cup fiasco Starter Trevor Harrison took full responsibility for Wednesday’s City Of Auckland Cup false start debacle. Harrison let the field go while one of the favourites Pinmedown was still behind the stalls. Realising his mistake he then pushed the false start button, forcing the field to be recalled. The race was re-run but only after three late scratchings, two of them being other favoured runners in Justamaiz and Sentimental Miss, who were withdrawn after the official raceday veterinarian declared they had run too far and
used up too much energy in the false start. Bets on all three horses who were scratched, the other being Roger That, after the false start were refunded. Long-time northern starter Harrison wasn’t making excuses after the incident. “It was my mistake, simple as that,” he said. “I just didn’t see the horse (Pinmedown). “I was distracted by another couple of horses who were rearing up and at the same time the hood came off Pinmedown (mak-
ing her harder to see) and she was right behind one of the clerk of the course horses and I didn’t see her so thought she was in the gates. “I then called a false start when I realised what had happened because I thought she deserved the chance to be in the race. “I feel bloody terrible about it, I don’t know what else to say.” Harrison, who is tremendously respected in the industry, stood himself down for the remaining two races and stewards have opened an inquiry into the incident. Platinum Invador’s victory in
the Gr.3 SkyCity City of Auckland Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie was a bittersweet result for trainer Lisa Latta. The Palmerston North conditioner’s other runner Sentimental Miss was late scratched from the race along with race favourite Justamaiz and Roger That. Platinum Invador’s jockey Leith Innes was aware of the situation and was ready to pull up his charge upon hearing the false start siren, however, other mounts weren’t so lucky. “It is frustrating that you travel the horses all the way up here for
that to happen,” Latta said. “You feel for all three horses that did get late scratched. “James (McDonald, Sentimental Miss’s jockey) didn’t hear the siren and got all the way around to the 1000m. “Platinum Invador did get pulled up early and it was a good ride by Leith.” Latta said she was confident with the 4-year-old son of Redwood after his runner-up performance behind subsequent race favourite Concert Hall in the Gr.3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) last month.

Stern will be greatly missed
Reaction from the basketball world and beyond to the death of former NBA Commissioner David Stern yesterday at age 77: “For 22 years, I had a courtside seat to watch David in action. He was a mentor and one of my dearest friends. We spent countless hours in the office, at arenas and on planes wherever the game would take us. Like every NBA legend, David had extraordinary talents, but with him it was always about the fundamentals – preparation, attention to detail, and hard work.” – Adam Silver, who followed Stern as commissioner. “Without David Stern, the NBA would not be what it is today. He guided the league through turbulent times and grew the league into an international phenomenon, creating opportunities that few could have imagined before. His vision and leadership provided me with the global stage that allowed me to succeed. David had a deep love for the game of basketball and demanded excellence from those around him – and I admired him for that.” – Michael Jordan. ■■DARTS
Snakebite takes the title Scottish Darts star Peter Wright yesterday captured his first PDC World Championship title with a superb 7-3 win over 2019 champion Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace. The 49-year-old lost 7-4 to Van Gerwen in the 2014 final and had previously lost 10 of his 11 major finals. But Wright raced into a 2-0 lead and with the three-time champion missing doubles, built a 6-3 advantage. Tournament seventh seed Wright, who won 6-5 in a sudden-death shootout in round
two, is the second oldest winner of the event. In his fifth world final and seeking his third crown in the past four years, Dutchman Van Gerwen was eyeing a 60th win in his 79th encounter with Wright and an eighth successive major final victory over the colourful Scot. Both players came into the final with a 44 per cent doubles success rate, but Wright missed three darts for the opening leg, although his consistency soon sealed the first set after Van Gerwen just clipped the wire of the
bullseye with his attempt at a 170 finish in the decider. Averaging 105.02, Wright raced through the next set 3-1, before the champion needed only 37 darts to take the third 3-0. Van Gerwen levelled the match at 2-2 after Wright missed his favourite double top that would have given him a two-set lead again. But Van Gerwen was in arrears at the interval as Wright recorded a 10-dart finish and then saw the Dutchman squander six darts for the next leg. With Van Gerwen continuing
to miss the doubles, Wright duly moved two sets clear again, taking the sixth 3-0 and soon led by two for the third time at 5-3. Both players missed two darts to win the championship’s ninth set but Wright eventually claimed it to move within one set of the title. Van Gerwen missed double 12 for the first nine-dart finish of the tournament and he was soon to miss out on the overall prize as well as the assured Wright sank double 10 at the third time of asking to land the sport’s biggest prize.
■■TENNIS
Hourigan gains wildcard entry to ASB Classic New Zealand No. 1 Paige Hourigan has been granted a main draw wildcard to the ASB Classic. Currently ranked 438 on the WTA Tour and 208 on the ITF rankings, the 22-year-old is coming off her first full year as a professional tennis player. Hourigan had a very impressive start to 2019, reaching the doubles final in Auckland with fellow Georgia Tech graduate,
American Taylor Townsend. The Kiwi then went on to win two ITF doubles titles in Singapore and Arizona, pairing up with teen sensation Coco Gauff to win in the American event. Hourigan has also won two ITF singles titles and a total of eight ITF doubles titles. She had a difficult second half of the year – compounded by a family tragedy away from tennis
– but comes to the ASB Classic in a good mindset, after winning the recent New Zealand nationals. “I’m so excited,” said Hourigan. “After having a few hiccups this year and some family issues, I’m just happy to be back out there competing and loving tennis again. I had an amazing time at the ASB Classic last year and am really excited to be back. I can’t
wait to play in front of New Zealand again.” Fellow Kiwis Erin Routliffe and Valentina Ivanov have both received wildcards into the qualifying event. Ivanov (18) had a strong start to her first season of College tennis in the USA. She compiled a 12-4 singles record to see her ranked No. 20 on the Oracle ITA poll.
“David Stern was such a history maker. When I announced in 1991 I had HIV, people thought they could get the virus from shaking my hand. When David allowed me to play in the 1992 All Star Game in Orlando and then play for the Olympic Dream Team, we were able to change the world.” – Magic Johnson. “There are no words that can really describe the far-reaching impact of Commissioner Stern’s brilliance, vision, fairness and hard work over so many years. There is no doubt Commissioner Stern lifted the NBA to new heights and he will be greatly missed by all of us.” – Larry Bird. “Will never forget the words you spoke this day! ‘With the 7th pick’ changed my life forever. Thank you and your family for your leadership and commitment to growing the game of basketball around the World. Forever grateful. RIP Commissioner Stern!” — Golden State guard Stephen Curry. “The game lost a leader today.” – Oklahoma City guard Chris Paul, president of the National Basketball Players Association.

Black Caps in turmoil
Gunners shoot down Man United
By Niall Anderson Black Caps batsmen Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls have missed a second straight day of training, just one day out from the third test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The pair didn’t turn to up training at the SCG yesterday, both still unwell with flu-like symptoms, while Williamson handed over the pre-match press conference duties to Tom Latham. Latham revealed that their status for today was still in doubt, as is that of Mitchell Santner, who didn’t pull up well yesterday morning. “It’s up in the air at the moment – a couple of boys are a little bit crook unfortunately,” said Latham. “They’re going to have today off, as well as yesterday, so fingers crossed they’ll be right to go tomorrow. “It’s gone around the team a little bit which obviously isn’t ideal, but fingers crossed – they’re resting up today and hopefully they’ll wake up tomorrow morning and be good to go.” Latham is not yet expecting to have to take the captain’s armband today, noting it would take a lot to rule Williamson out of the test. “He’s obviously a great leader amongst this group and he’s passionate about this group, so I’m sure if there’s any chance of him playing – even if it is a small chance – he’ll certainly be playing.” The news will be concerning for the Black Caps, who possess seriously limited options in terms of available batting cover. Horrendously out-of-form opener Jeet Raval is the only batsman waiting in the wings, with bowlers Todd Astle, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry and Will
Somerville the other squad options who didn’t play in Melbourne. However, the Black Caps haven’t yet called in cover, perhaps signalling that Williamson and Nicholls should be fine to play today, and Latham believes there is enough depth amongst the squad. “We’d have to look at the make-up of the squad. “We’ve got one extra batsman in the squad but we’ve got a few all-rounders there as well, which does make it a little bit easier, so if we do have to come to that decision then all options will be discussed. “If we lost those guys it would be disappointing, but I know we’ve got a squad of 15 here who are passionate about this team, and whatever side we do end up playing, we’ve got the backing of the whole group that it’s the right team to do the job.” Australian captain Tim Paine was expecting Williamson, in particular, to play. “We’re not worried about it. “We’re planning for him to play – if Kane Williamson misses a couple of days training I don’t think it’s going to affect him too much. “I think a player of his quality knows what he’s doing, he knows how to prepare himself and knows how to get up for the big games. “We’re preparing for the best Kane Williamson, and if he’s not there, then we saw last game that a guy like Tom Blundell can come in and take it right up to us. “They’ve got some very good players, we’re not sure what XI they’re going to go with, but we’ve looked really closely at who they’ve got here, so we’re prepared for everyone.”
Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson.
Arsenal showed signs they can excel under coach Mikel Arteta with an impressive 2-0 win at home to Manchester United in the Premier League, while Southampton sunk Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 and Chelsea were held 1-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion. Nicolas Pepe was in inspired form as he gave Arsenal an early lead and Sokratis made it 2-0 before halftime yesterday, galvanising the home fans who finally had something to shout about following a miserable run by their standards. Brighton forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s brilliant equaliser denied fourth-placed Chelsea back-toback league wins. However, United’s defeat meant Chelsea were five points clear of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and six clear of Spurs. Third-placed Manchester City secured a 2-1 victory over Everton, while David Moyes’ West Ham United reign got under way with a 4-0 hammering of Bournemouth. Spurs have suffered from inconsistency after an early bounce under under Jose Mourinho and their loss at St Mary’s to a Danny Ings strike further derailed their push for a top-four finish, while their problems mounted with Harry Kane limping off injured. Days after a laboured showing in a 2-2 draw at bottom side Norwich City, Spurs could not find a way back into the game after Ings’ goal.
Four-day test call gathering momentum New Zealand Cricket has joined the move to consider four-day test matches. The international calendar for 2023 and beyond will be sorted out this year and the England and Wales Cricket Board is offering cautious support for the radical proposal. While five-day tests have been the norm since 1979 and many of the format’s most exciting finishes have been decided on the final day of play, the ICC have the support of a number of the sport’s governing bodies including Australia, England and New Zealand. New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive David White told Radio Sport’s Elliott Smith four-day tests would free up the calendar a bit. “One of challenges is the calendar is very contested with ICC events, the test championship and bilateral cricket,” he said. “Having four-day test matches frees up the calendar a bit. If you could have a test match on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday it certainly makes it easier to plan. “But there’s a lot of consultation which has got to go through and particularly with the players. “They are the reason we have the
game and we have to consult them as well.” There have been immediate rifts within the playing ranks, with Australian captain Tim Paine and spinner Nathan Lyon amongst those vehemently opposed to the change, along with the New Zealand pace bowler Neil Wagner and South Africa’s Vernon Philander. Lyon said: “you need time for the pitch to deteriorate and bring spinners in more on day five as well. “I’m totally against it and I hope ICC aren’t even considering it.” Wagner said: “If you look at the test matches that have gone five days and into a last session, they’re some of the most exciting tests in history – and there’s been quite a few in the last year or so.” Former test captains Mark Taylor and Michael Vaughan are open to the change, and England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler said the game must be “open to change”. “I think the administrators and broadcasters have got to look at the best way to preserve test cricket. It’s the best form of the game, so how can we maintain that and keep moving the game on?” Buttler said. Four-day matches have been
allowed since 2017 and England scheduled one against Ireland but it only lasted for three days. Leading UK cricket writer Scyld Berry has argued the essential nature of test cricket would be destroyed by the change. “A five-day test is a fight to the finish. “It is dog-eats-dog, primeval and thrilling. You win or lose. Time is not a consideration. A draw is highly unlikely (none even in rainy England from 2016 until last summer). It is the law of the jungle transferred to a playing field. “When all the frills and niceties are stripped away, it is a fight for survival,” he wrote in a column for the Telegraph. “But if you make every test a fourday game, time comes into it and offers the lesser team a place to hide. Not dog-eats-dog, but containment, and negativity, in pursuit of a draw. Thus a dramatic contest is watered down into sparring. “The tempo of test cricket should not be speeded up any further than it is already. There should be quiet periods – as in any human activity which lasts all day for days on end – as well as exciting ones.” Black Caps bowling star Neil Wagner is against the change.

Rugby’s secret weapons After upsetting Team Cricket last year, Team Rugby has revealed two secret weapons to help them go back-to-back in the 2020 Black Clash. Former Sri Lankan internationals Muttiah Muralitharan and Mahela Jayawardene will suit up for Team Rugby in the exhibition Twenty20 cricket match in Napier later this month. They will link up the likes of former New Zealand under-20s cricket captain Kaylum Boshier, Beauden and Jordie Barrett, and Brad Weber. While two former elite cricketers joining Team Rugby is a bit of a head-scratcher, the additions were justified as the two are rugby fans. “These guys wouldn’t be playing for us unless they had a rugby pedigree,” Team Rugby coach and selec-

You couldn’t ask for two better pros.” Noted rugby man Muttiah Muralitharan
tor Sir Graham Henry said. “To have a couple of Sri Lankan rugby players who can play a bit of cricket is going to be quite handy for us.” Jayawardene posted multiple records in every form of the game. The former CD Stag was the first

High praise from Paine
He might give the Black Caps a bit of stick from behind the stumps when wicketkeeping, but Australian captain Tim Paine has given some heartwarming praise to the New Zealand team on the eve of the third test in Sydney. “To Kane [Williamson], Gary [Stead] and the rest of the New Zealand squad – thank you for the tremendous spirit in which you’ve played this series, your team has been admired the world over for the
way you play your cricket. “The excitement that you build among your own fans is truly special – as the Australian team witnessed first-hand at the MCG, with a huge amount of Kiwi supporters packed in for the Boxing Day test. “It was brilliant to see so many Kiwi shirts in the crowd, although they gave us a bit of stick. “We look forward to our friendly rivalry growing over the next few years.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The first step to staying inside your own rules and feeling confident in your integrity is to consciously define and outline your plan for yourself on the daily. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The attitude of the day will establish a mood that carries through with a great momentum that might be difficult to interrupt. So it will be important to take a moment to set things right early on. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Strength is developed through repetition that you make happen. Training isn’t like real life, but it does build strength that will translate into real-life situations and sustain you. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Healthy relationships often go unadvertised, as they are a private matter, reflected in the confidence of the two people involved not the hundreds of Facebook friends on the sidelines. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Maybe you don’t need to forgive yourself so much as learn more about yourself. You expected something different than what you wanted to do in the moment. It’s nothing more or less than good information to know. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You learn to steal the moments of grace and execute loveliness where you can. Down deep you understand that life will always be complicated so the moment is always now and now and now. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Kindness is better than coolness, but you’ve always known that. What may surprise you is that it’s trending so strongly today along with the preference of happiness and integrity over conformity. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You express your fearlessness differently these days. You’re unconcerned with appearing powerful or right, or proving yourself in any way. Fearlessness allows for vulnerability. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’re trying things, striving, acting, doing something new. Mistakes are the normal and natural outcropping of this. Mistakes are what successful people make more of than anyone else. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You can’t always choose everyone you’re going to be around. People come with other people. Luckily, one good egg will often be delivered with a dozen similarly good eggs. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Stress is helpful but only in small doses. Recognise when you’ve been overdosed by your own vigilant mind, and put in an order for a lesser prescription of worry. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Not all exercise is created equal. There are exercises that energise you, calm you, build you and purify you. It’s the same with food and work and relationships. Choose thoughtfully.

New Year on the fairways
Ina Divers tees off at the Tinwald Golf New Year Tournament yesterday.
PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 020120-HM-0029
Over a hundred golfers took part in the Tinwald Golf Club New Year Tournament yesterday. The popular competition attracts local players as well as those from further afield. “This year, which is about our tenth, we
have registrations from Christchurch and Pleasant Point,” said club captain Bruce Collins. Before the advent of the local contest, Tinwald golfers travelled to Hororata to play at New Year.
“We were giving our money to another club.” It was agreed that staging their own tournament made more economic sense. “So we stopped going there and played here instead.”
It is always held on the second of January, no matter what day of the week it might fall on. “Golfers all around the place are quite often looking for something to do by then,” he said.
Venus top seed in strong field New Zealand’s Michael Venus will headline a very strong doubles draw for the 2020 ASB Classic with new partner, Australian John Peers. Venus has had another outstanding year on tour, adding to more ATP doubles titles to his name (Washington, Halle) and
breaking inside the top 10 for the first time in his career. The Kiwi hit his highest ranking of No. 8 in the world after reaching the semi-final of Wimbledon with South African partner Raven Klaasen. The duo made another seven quarter-finals and three finals including the ATP Tour finals
to finish off their stellar year. Australian Peers is a world class doubles specialist who was just shy from the top spot in 2017. The experienced Aussie will partner Venus for the first time in Auckland and the pair are looking to live up to their top seed ranking.
“I’m looking forward to getting out on court with John, and we want to start on a winning note especially in my hometown. I love playing in front of family and friends,” said Venus. Tournament director Karl Budge is happy with how the field has come together and is looking
forward to some great doubles matches this year. “It’s fantastic to have a Kiwi in the number one ranking, especially considering the strength of the field and that it’s his some tournament. “I know he’s really looking forward to getting back out on court.”
