Defence expert reviews evidence Evidence relating to a crash on Christchurch’s Port Hills which claimed the life of two Ashburton sisters is being reviewed by a defence expert. Yesterday, a 19-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in Christchurch District Court in front of Judge Kevin Phillips. He has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing injury and driving without the appropriate licence. The man was in control of the vehicle which crashed off the Port Hills, Summit Road around 11pm on November 27 last year. Tayla Alexander, 17, died at the scene
while her younger sister, Sunmara, who was aged 15 at the time of the accident, died in Middlemore Hospital in Auckland on her 16th birthday. Yesterday, in court, the teenager was remanded at large without entering a plea. Pleas are expected to be entered when he next appears in front of a judge on Tuesday, August 4. Friends of Tayla and Sunmara were in court yesterday for proceedings. It was the second appearance for the teen in court following the crash. The girls’ father Jason Alexander said being in court that day had been hard because it “brought everything back”. “I just want justice done for my two
daughters and make sure this doesn’t happen again to any other family. It’s tragic. “I miss them so much.” Alexander was not present at court yesterday. Since the tragedy, work has been done to try and improve safety on the Port Hills roads, which Alexander welcomed, although he couldn’t help feel that his daughters had been used as “martyrs”. “This was a devastating event and a tragic reminder to all drivers of the need to drive safely and to the conditions,” Superintendent Lane Todd, Canterbury Metro Area Commander, said.

■■PRINCIPALS ASSOCIATION
Flying the flag for district’s principals By Sue Newman
Wakanui School principal Rebekah Clement, chairperson of the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association.
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Achieving the best possible educational outcomes for young people motivates newly appointed Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association chairperson Rebekah Clement every morning when she heads to Wakanui School. She’s just a few weeks into the job as spokesperson for the district’s 23 principals and said, while she’s still feeling her way in the role, she’s looking forward to adding a few new challenges to her working life. “I’m living education anyway and this is just another part of my role, another challenge,” she said. Clement is in her second year as Wakanui principal, taking up the position after a seven-year stint at Chertsey School. Prior to that she was at Lowcliffe School and worked with the community during the time tough decisions were made to close their school. At Wakanui she’s in her first stint as a non-teaching principal and, while she admits to missing some aspects of hands on teaching, she manages to get sufficient classroom time to satisfy her teaching needs, she said. As chairperson of the local as-

While the association was independent, it did work with other organisations in the sector as needed, she said.
“My role is very local but we feed into the New Zealand Principals Federation,” she said. As a past student of Springburn School, Clement said she had a passion for rural schools and the strong community involvement that traditionally went with these. Wakanui is a Year 1-8 school and currently has a growing roll – 115 today, but anticipated to hit 125 by the year’s end. The school retains most of it’s roll through to year 8, Clement said, with senior students able to take on strong leadership roles in the school. Seniors also had the opportunity to attend a major trip each year. “We’re able to offer different things and we have unique opportunities because we’re smaller,” she said.
■■EXPERIENCE MID CANTERBURY
Tourism sector surviving, but not thriving By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
With a tourism industry that was heavily weighted towards domestic tourism, the Ashburton District was better positioned than many parts of New Zealand to ride out the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, a tourism leader says. Traditionally, 86 per cent of the district’s tourism spend comes from the domestic market and current indications are that there is unlikely to be a sig-

can’t jump up and down with joy yet, but we’re going in the right direction.” He credits some of that survival to the district being quick off the mark with a promotions campaign. “We (Canterbury) got to the market before anyone else, we were ready to go. And of course we’ve got the mountain, that’s our big success story.” The domestic market focus that had been the Ashburton’s District’s stock in trade over the
nificant year-on-year drop, Experience Mid Canterbury manager Bruce Moffat said. Spend numbers did not appear to have dropped as much as anticipated, down from $192 million for the year to $186 million and that was less than his earlier prediction of a $11 million deficit, he said. “The thermometer seems to be going flat out and by and large, the people I’ve been talking to on this are doing okay considering but time will tell. past 10 years was paying dividends, now. It is part of the current New Zealand Tourism campaign and, in August, a new Canterbury marketing campaign will be launched. In terms of industry survival, Moffat believes most operators around the district will come through the post Covid slowdown and said the only two he was aware had called time were the Methven Resort and Terrace Downs, whose owner died of

Covid-19. “We’re not in for the same financial concerns as other regions.” New Zealanders were clearly ready to holiday at home, he said, but regions that had been heavily dependent on international tourists were, in some cases, struggling to adapt to the new norm, he said. “New Zealanders like a really good deal, but you don’t need to drop your pants, just provide a good, consistent deal.”

■■SCOUTING
New Year adventure camp locked in By Jaime Pitt-MacKay
Left – The Scouts Staveley Adventure Camp has been confirmed for early January next year.
Jaime.p@theguardain.co.nz
They might have had serious doubts of whether the event would go ahead a couple of months ago, but the Mania-oroto Scouts have confirmed their triennial Staveley Adventure Camp will be going ahead in the New Year. The camp, traditionally held early in January, sees scouts and venturers from around Canterbury, and occasionally further afield, flock to the Staveley Camp for the week-long camp. Zone scout leader Michelle Brown said there had been serious doubts whether they would be able to host the event, and they are preparing it on a much tighter than normal time-frame. “We were very doubtful we were going to be able to hold it,” she said. “We are now three months behind in the planning but, we have done it in a short time before. “In 2011, after the Canterbury earthquakes, we planned it in about four months.” The camp has had scouts at-

tending from overseas in the past, but Brown said they will be looking to keep attendees limited to Canterbury-based scouts.
Brown said, depending on the Covid situation, there was a chance the event would have be cancelled before it went ahead,
and that they will have a Covid plan in place for that eventuality. The activities run at the camp will look similar to previous
events, with a number of new activities and only one not being able to run due to the provider taking a break for 12 months following the Covid-19 lockdown. Brown said she was unsure on what numbers would look like for the event compared to previous years, but expected things would be clearer come the end of August. In the past the event has attracted more than 200 scouts and venturers, with more than 100 leaders to help run the event. In 2015 the campers cooked breakfast and lunch for themselves, shopping at a market onsite – stocked with 700 loaves of bread, 1100 bread rolls, 3000 muffins, 900 litres of milk, 4000 pieces of fresh fruit and half a tonne of spuds.
Happy ending for damaged bike park bridge By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Community spirit, and the good nature of people, has won the day in the tale of damage sustained to a bridge at the Ashburton Mountain Bike Park last week. The damage, which is believed to have been caused by a motorbike, completely ruined the bridge and left that particular part of the track unusable for biking enthusiasts, who were instead asked to get off their bikes and walk across the gap. Mountain Bike Ashburton president, James Reid, said in the aftermath of the discovery that it was a blow for the group of passionate people who poured time and energy into making the track user-friendly. “It’s pretty disappointing really,” Reid said. “There’s a lot of work that goes into building and
maintaining the track and for things like this to happen is really frustrating.” While it doesn’t help with the frustrations around the damage, community spirit came to the rescue over the course of the weekend and the bridge has been fully repaired. Adam Graham, from AG Fencing, and Matt Dellit, from Great Southern Group Ashburton, stepped in and repaired the bridge. “It was simply awesome,” Reid said this week. “They’ve done a great job and it looks fantastic, we’re incredibly lucky to have people like this out there in the community, who want to help us out when things like this happen.” Ashburton Police were notified of the incident, but Reid was yet to hear back from them on progress into finding those responsible for the vandalism.

Sarah Waddell has grown up with horses on her family farm at Mayfield Valletta.
PHOTO SUSAN SANDYS 260620-SS-106
The magic of dressage Sarah Waddell decided show jumping was cooler than dressage when she was a child living at Mayfield Valletta, but her ponies thought otherwise. They led her into dressage, and it turned out to be just the right thing, paving the way for a career as an assistant rider in world-renowned stables. Susan Sandys reports.
T
here is something magical about the discipline of dressage, says Sarah Waddell. The 26-year-old has just returned from Germany where she was employed by the world-leading Koschel Dressage stables, led by grand prix rider Christoph Koschel and based at the Hof Kasslemann PSI facility. Her job as assistant rider involved taking the grand prix horses through their paces, and training younger horses up, within a range of multiple indoor arenas and outdoor rings at the Koschel facility. Known for their high energy and precision movements, dressage horses respond to trainers who are not only skilled, but who also have an affinity with the animals. “I think it’s the fact that you are riding an animal that you manage to be able to get to work with you. It’s containing the energy and turning it into a positive energy, where it literally feels like they are dancing and working with you as one,” Waddell said. She was at the stables for more than two years, following nine months at Olympian equestrian Hayley Beresford’s stables in Germany, where she had initially gone to from New Zealand to gain work experience. As well as being a champion grand prix rider, Koschel taught the Japanese
Taking top level dressage horses through their paces was the experience of a lifetime for Sarah Waddell. PHOTO SUPPLIED dressage team, and Waddell was involved in this, riding horses destined for the Olympics. Her job with Beresford was supposed to be for just three months, and then she was to return to take up a job in the field of agronomy, which she had qualified for after completing a degree at Lincoln University. However, she ended up having to tell her expectant Kiwi boss that it was not to be, as she had
just been offered the opportunity of a lifetime, and she would be staying in Germany. Growing up on the family farm, Waddell always had paddocks at her front doorstep populated with her many horses, and at one point in high school she owned as many as six. She would ride them when she got home from nearby Mount Hutt College each day, even if it was dark, as it often would
be in winter. When she went off to university and flatted at Lincoln, she had to prioritise and cut down to just one horse, but she made sure she rented a paddock so her horse could be nearby. Despite the effect of the pandemic, Waddell remained busy in her assistant rider role, but the global uncertainty made her want to return to New Zealand recently to see her family. She
plans to get back to Germany in the future, and in the meantime plans on passing on her dressage training skills in New Zealand. She has already been booked by fellow South Island riders for lessons, keen to help out those wanting to learn from novice to grand prix levels or anywhere in between. It has been an incredible journey for a Mayfield Valletta farm girl who was never all that big on dressage as a child. “I always wanted to be jumping because I thought it was cooler, none of my ponies jumped, they were all really bad at jumping.” However, they were all good at dressage, and Waddell began to prefer the challenge of dressage. The highlights from her German experience were many. “Some of the horses are already at grand prix level, but I prefer training younger ones because you are teaching them things they have never done before. It’s a cool thing to know you have taught them that,” she said. She recalled the kudos she got from Koschel’s father, top dressage trainer Jurgen Koschel, who emphasised the value of not just knowing how to teach, but also having an affinity with the horses. “He said to me, “You can’t teach feeling, you have to have a lot of feeling”.

Clark resigns as health minister RNZ David Clark has formally resigned as Health Minister after recent controversies in his handling of the Covid-19 response. He has been under pressure since the start of the government’s response to Covid-19 some months ago. He said the portfolio had been a challenging one and it was clear to him that he was becoming a distraction from the Government’s response to the pandemic. “I’ve always taken a view that the team must come first ... so I’ve made the call that it’s best for me to step aside.” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she had accepted his resignation. “David has come to the conclusion his presence in the role is creating an unhelpful distraction from the government’s ongoing response to Covid-19, and wider health reforms,” Ardern said in a statement. “It’s essential our health leadership has the confidence of the New Zealand public. As David has said to me, the needs of the team must come before him as an individual.” Chris Hipkins has been appointed as Minister of Health until the elections. Ardern said she had full confidence he would “oversee the portfolio with the thoroughness and diligence”. “Post-election I intend to reassess who is best placed to take the health portfolio forward.”
David Clark officially resigned yesterday. At his announcement, Clark said with the focus shifting to tackling the virus at the border, this was the right time to move on. “I have made the decision myself and I genuinely think now is the right time. “It’s important we get the response right and I don’t want to be a distraction to that response.” He thanked health profession-
als who had been putting themselves at the frontline during the pandemic and New Zealanders’ sacrifice during the various alert levels. “Despite more than 80,000 tests in the last two weeks alone, we have no evidence of community transmission ... we are now in a more stable footing ... Now is the right time to hand over the reins and move forward with
■■NATIONAL PARTY
Bridges handed a lifeline RNZ National Party leader Todd Muller has revealed a caucus reshuffle following Paula Bennett quitting the party. Simon Bridges has been handed the foreign affairs portfolio and will be ranked at number 17. Muller said Bridges’ new role reflected his credibility as former leader and status within the party. “It’s my judgement now that this is an opportunity to provide Simon with a portfolio that he would like.” Bridges had expressed an interest in the role after he was replaced as leader but was denied it at the time. It was “a reflection of the contribution that he has made as a former National Party leader, the status that he has in our party”, Muller said. Dr Shane Reti will move up the rank to number 13 and replace Paula Bennett, taking on the associate drug reform spokesperson role. Amy Adams will be the drug reform spokesperson. Muller has been under pressure about the lack of diversity in his caucus.
Simon Bridges has been handed the foreign affairs portfolio in a National Party reshuffle. PHOTO SUPPLIED The reshuffle means there are now two Maori MPs in the party’s top 20. Muller said Reti had demonstrated a huge intellect and capacity for work, supporting Mi-
chael Woodhouse in the Covid-19 response, as well as achieving much in the Tertiary Education portfolio. “Many had observed he was a talent that should have further opportunities... “Of course I consulted [on the decisions]. You have conversations with your colleagues.” Muller also announced that deputy leader Nikki Kaye would pick up the portfolio of women and would make several announcements associated with the portfolio in the coming months. Speaking about the new caucus, Muller said it was, “strong and diverse”. “We are eight to nine weeks away from the election and I decided to make a minor re-shuffle.” “Our shadow Cabinet is an incredibly talented one ... I look at the through the lens of talent and capability.” “I think our caucus is very united,” he said. Talking about Bridges’ position as MP for Tauranga, Muller said he supported it wishes for an ongoing role. He called his relationship with Bridges “very professional”.
new leadership.” He said it had been a rewarding three years and he was proud of all his team had achieved in that time. “But it has not all been smooth sailing, and I wish to put it on the record again I take full responsibility for the decisions made and taken during my time as Minister of Health.” He reiterated his support for
Dr Bloomfield and thanked him for his extraordinary efforts during Covid-19. Clark first came under fire during the pandemic when it was revealed he took a trip to a beach with his family in the first week of Level 4 lockdown. Although he offered to resign at the time, the prime minister reprimanded and demoted him but did not sack him. The Dunedin-based MP also admitted to a second breach, after driving to a mountain biking track during lockdown. Jacinda Ardern said under normal circumstances she would have sacked him. More recently he faced a backlash after repeatedly saying Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield was the person responsible for failures at the border, and only taking responsibility himself as minister after several days. Talking about his comments on Bloomfield and whether that was the reason for his resignation, Clark said: “I’ve always been clear that I have a deep respect for Ashley Bloomfield and we have a good, warm working relationship.” “The important thing is the whole context of my admiration for his work ... I’m grateful for the work he and his team have done.” Clark will continue to serve as an MP and says he remains committed to the Labour Party and will ask for people’s support in the coming elections.
Govt may reinstate compassionate leave RNZ The government will next week look at the reinstatement of compassionate leave for those in managed isolation. Minister Megan Woods and Air Commodore Digby Webb have given an update on the country’s Covid-19 isolation and quarantine system. Woods said the reinstatement of compassionate exemptions and the work required to do that would be a priority for the government next week. “We know this is a matter of enormous concern for those people who are seeking these exemptions. “It is also of public concern and it is our absolute priority to ensure that these can safely go ahead.” Woods said there were issues around how people got to their destinations and compliance when they got there. She said they would have to plan for a range of scenarios. Woods said they had also been working with ESR and the Ministry of Health to prioritise a fast-lane at the labs for samples that are sent from the isolation
hotels, particularly the day-12 samples so they can make sure the results are back by the day14 release. By next week, they aim to have the appropriate testing equipment installed to monitor the wastewater at the Jet Park Hotel, where New Zealand’s current active cases have been quarantined. Woods and Air Commodore Webb visited Hamilton on Wednesday to meet with iwi, the mayor, DHB, police and NZDF, hotel staff and clinical staff to discuss using facilities in the city. She said they visited one of the hotels that currently stood up and a future hotel that will come online soon. She said they were also looking at other centres where they may need to stand up other facilities. Queenstown and Dunedin are being considered and they will be visiting those centres next week. There are currently 24 managed isolation and quarantine facilities in four different regions. Air Commodore Webb said they planned to increase that to 27 over the next week.

Kindness, an act that costs you nothing
H
ow good is community spirit? If you had a dollar for every act of kindness offered by a member of our community to an individual, group or organisation in need you’d be one rich individual. But there’s no true value that can be placed on people rallying around a project or person when the chips are down. When Mountain Bike Ashburton discovered damage to their trail last week, where a bridge had been smashed to bits by something far too big and heavy to be on top of it, they feared that any funds they had sitting in the account would have to be used to make repairs to a muchused stretch of local turf. With Covid-19 putting a halt to their major fundraising event for the year, that was going to leave them in a tough position financially. But, as it so invariably does, the Mid Canterbury community was having none of that and the offers of support came flooding in. From businesses, to biking groups and individuals, they were inundated. And thus over the weekend those who like to enjoy their biking activities on the incredible track were able to do so without having to get off their bikes and walk across a piece of track they normally would be able to bike over. It’s acts of kindness and generosity that make this little district of ours such a great place to live. The example above is just one of many that you could reference and it really does underline that despite all the bravado of being tough, rugged and uncaring rural folk, we are actually big old softies who will help out anyone in need who is deserving. And we should never change that. Ever. It’s a great asset to have and something which endears us to others. There’s a lot you can give in life, but kindness is the one that costs you the least and gives you the most reward. Nice work, Mid Canterbury. Really nice work.
YOUR VIEW
It’s not easy being strong By Sahera Laing
T
he problem with being strong is that nobody expects you to be otherwise. You are always the dependable one, the one with all the solutions, the one that reaches out first and helps. And most of the time you are strong. You are perfectly capable of assisting and it’s just what you do. But just now and then, things can feel like they are too much even for the strongest person. The burden they carry is heavy, and just one small event too many, can see them internally topple. The signals are there though: • The odd comment on how hard it feels • Injustices irritate more than normal • They go quiet • They withdraw a little each day • They have the mantra “Ahh, it’s nothing I can’t sort out for myself” • They want some space, preferably being left alone They doubt themselves and so they start to bottle things up and close down emotionally. The problem with this closing down, is that it compounds. The strong person feels they have to
hold it together and the conflict they experience gets buried. Being strong for others, becomes a habit and we all know how hard changing some habits can be, especially when they are tangled with your identity. So, where does a strong person go to get support? Sadly, most do not. They really don’t know how to trust someone with whom they can drop their defences and be vulnerable. Those they normally trust, don’t tend to pick up on problems or signals and so they start to think that they are not significant enough to burden anyone with their troubles. To share those weak moments is hugely intimate. Being that exposed is the bravest thing in the world for a strong person, it can be more intimate than sex. What they need is a safe and non-judgmental space to simply be heard and acknowledged. They could go to a complete stranger (preferable a suitably trained therapist) and get some help … but they don’t know this person, trust has yet to be established. Having the right support and trust is paramount because when you have held it together for so long, what might happen when
you let it all come flooding out? Will you go back to being the strong person or will you fall apart easily like everyone else. If that occurs, what happens to your identity? You like being the strong one, it’s who you are and what you do, and if you can’t be, then what? It’s terrifying business! I want to say, it need not be that terrifying. But in all honesty it is. It’s scary as hell! But you need only be brave for a few moments because once you start speaking it begins to get easier. “Will they think I am being pathetic, weak and a cry-baby? “I really don’t like complaining about stuff. Will it be okay to not be strong in front of this person?” Yes! It will be completely okay to let your guard down. Nothing you say is trivial. It all matters! Getting it out of you, allows you to sort it out. Instead of staying in your head going around in ceaseless circles that makes the whole thing feel hopeless. The wonderful things about strong people is they have a level of resilience that surpasses most others. Once they have got it out in the open they can breathe again. There is a level of freedom that
allows them to be stronger in a more powerful way. They are often not looking to be “fixed” although they may feel “broken”. So, if you have a strong person in your life, let them take the limelight now and then. Give them space to just talk, vent and DO NOT TRY AND FIX IT. A strong person doesn’t want to be rescued they want to feel validated. Don’t leave them to it to mull it over. Instead listen and let them know that you are in their corner supporting and cheering them on no matter what. Be quiet and let them have their say. Bear witness to their perceived injustices and pain – validate them. Give them some heartfelt understanding so they can continue to be strong for you. And if you are a strong person and need help, in my next column I am going to share some tips about how (and how not) to ask for help so you stop pushing away the people you love. Beer, salt and sleep
T
his week I’d like to start with the best news story of the week. When someone is looking to lead a healthier lifestyle, one of the first recommendations made by doctors and nutritionists alike is to stop drinking alcohol. After all, alcohol kills brain cells, right? Well, a new study is sure to delight and validate drinkers the world over. Researchers from the University of Georgia surprisingly concluded that a little bit of alcohol may actually be a good thing for the ageing brain. Now, before you run off to the bottle store, remember the key phrase here is “a little bit”. After examining many associations between alcohol consumption and cognition over time among middle-aged and elderly Americans, the team at UGA concluded that light to moderate drinking may actually preserve brain functioning in old age. And that’s with their rubbish beer like Budweiser. Imagine how good for you a top quality New Zealand craft beer must be!
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
If you’re anything like me you’ll sleep like a baby after a few beers as well and I don’t mean waking up screaming because you’ve wet yourself. But if you’re struggling with your sleep at the moment or you wake up feeling very tired and sluggish, here’s an idea for you. I came across an article this week on the benefits of salt. I’m not talking the run-of-the-mill table stuff, but the pink Himalayan salt. This article uncovered the health benefits of the salt and the bit that really caught my eye was waking up feeling refreshed and with good energy levels. The article said to mix one teaspoon of Himalayan salt with five teaspoons of raw organic
honey. Place a small amount of this mixture under your tongue before you head off to the scratcher. The first night I tried it, I had a good sleep, but woke 40 minutes early at 3.20am. I lay for a few minutes and tried to doze off again, but I was wide awake and feeling energised so I got up and headed into work. I’ll keep at it and hopefully I’ll be able to sleep through to the alarm and wake up feeling good. Mind you, I did get plenty done at work that morning. While I’m talking articles about sleeping. As much as sleeping in separate beds can seem appealing at times, especially if your partner is a snoring champion, stick with it. A new comprehensive study by the centre has found that couples get better sleep when together. For four nights over two consecutive weekends, a dozen healthy, heterosexual couples, aged between 18 and 29, bedded down either with their partner or
on their lonesome. An analysis of their brain waves, heart activity, movement and muscle tension found that sleeping together was associated with 10 per cent more deep, refreshing REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. They also found that the couple’s sleep cycles fell into synch. This was especially true for those evaluated to be in a deeply loving relationship (probably non-snorers). It’s important to note that the study did not include any test subjects who were reported to have ice-cold feet … and insist on sharing them! As a last resort, if the few quiet beers, salt and honey and partner don’t help you get off to sleep, you could always peruse a few of my past columns, that should do the job in no time. ■■UNITED STATES
Covid soars in California California dramatically rolled back efforts to reopen its economy on Wednesday, banning indoor restaurant dining in much of the state, closing bars and stepping up enforcement of the restrictions as Covid-19 infections surge. Indoor activities at restaurants, movie theatres, museums and other facilities will be banned in 19 counties where 70 per cent of the population lives, for at least three weeks, Governor Gavin Newsom said. All bars and brew pubs, whether indoor or out, must also close in affected counties, which include heavily populated Los Angeles and Orange Counties, as well as the state capital of Sacramento. The state is also stepping up enforcement of the rules, setting up strike forces made up of regulatory agencies and the California Highway Patrol, Newsom said at a press briefing yesterday. The agencies will have the power to issue citations and review the licenses of businesses that do not comply, said Mark Ghilarducci, director of the Office of Emergency Services. Newsom also asked counties to enforce the rules, saying the state’s recently passed budget allowed him to withhold funds from those that do not comply. Hospitalisations and deaths from Covid-19 have been soaring in the most populous US state, starting around the Memorial Day weekend and continuing to rise. Over the past 24 hours, 110 people have died in California, the governor said. Nearly half of the available intensive care beds in the state are being used by Covid-19 patients, and the rate at which residents are testing positive for the virus has risen to 6 per cent over the past 14 days, up from 4.6 per cent over the prior 14 days, he said. Florida, Texas and other states are also seeing a surge in cases and hospitalisations from Covid-19. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, who has often pushed back against mask guidance from health officials, says he would wear one “in a tight situation with people”. Trump – who has avoided appearing in public with a mask – also maintained face coverings do not need to become mandatory to curb Covid-19’s spread. His remarks to Fox News come a day after a top Republican called on Trump to wear a mask as an example. A number of states are seeing surges in virus cases and deaths in recent days. The US now has over 2.6 million confirmed Covid-19 infections and more than 127,000 deaths. Speaking to Fox Business Network on today, Trump said: “I’m all for masks.” When asked whether he would wear one, the president said: “If I were in a tight situation with people I would, absolutely.” He added that people have seen him wearing one before. Trump said he would have “no problem” with wearing a mask publicly and that he “sort of liked” how he looked with one on,
Benee on a very big stage Kiwi popstar Benee has made her debut on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. The 20-year-old from Auckland performed her hit track Supalonely on the talk show today. It was her second appearance on a big name US talk show. Last month she was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, but due to Covid-19 travel restrictions had to record her performance at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland.
Lea Michelle ‘despicable’
US President Donald Trump likens himself to the Lone Ranger with a mask. likening himself to the Lone Ranger. But the president reiterated that he did not think making face-coverings mandatory across the United States was needed, because there are “many places in the country where people stay very long distance”. “If people feel good about it they should do it.” Trump was also asked in his Fox Business interview if he still believes coronavirus will “disappear” someday. “I do,” he said. “I do. Yeah sure. At some point.” During Trump’s forthcoming Independ-
ence Day celebration on July 3 at Mount Rushmore, his supporters in attendance will not be forced to wear masks or socially distance. When the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in April began recommending people wear masks or cloth coverings in public to help stop the spread of the virus, Trump told reporters he would not follow the practice. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it,” he said at the time. “Wearing a face mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens – I just don’t see it.”
Melbourne lockdown ‘disappointing, unusual’ A Melbourne cafe owner having to go back to takeaway and delivery only while others on her street continue to trade says it’s frustrating, disappointing, and unusual. Espresso 155 Cafe owner Maria Iatrou is also president of the Union Road Traders Association – a group of retailers on a shopping strip in the Melbourne suburb
of Ascot Vale, and her cafe, along with the rest of Ascot Vale, goes into lockdown for a month from 11.59pm Wednesday night. Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews announced the move to lockdown 10 areas, after a spike of Covid-19 cases in the city. It comes as cases there continue to rise with 73 new cases reported yesterday,
mostly cases of community transmission. Residents in lockdown will only be able to leave home to exercise or work, buy essential items and to access child or healthcare. Anyone crossing the state border into New South Wales from the lockdown zones could be jailed for up to six months and there’s an $11,000 instant fine.
Lea Michele’s former Broadway co-star has slammed her as a “despicable, horrible human being”. The Glee alum has come under fire from several of her former co-stars in recent weeks after Samantha Marie Ware accused her of making life “a living hell” for her when they worked together on the TV show. And now, Craig Ramsay – who starred in Fiddler on the Roof alongside Lea in the early 2000s – has opened up on his own experience with the actress, claiming she’s “one of the most entitled people” he has ever met.
Paris ‘living in a van’ Despite being an heiress to her late father Michael’s vast fortune, Paris Jackson has been living in a van. The actress made the admission during her Facebook Watch series, Unfiltered: Paris Jackson And Gabriel Glenn. While discussing her relationship with Glenn, Jackson revealed they initially met through mutual friends but got together after a jam session for Glenn’s band. “We immediately just vibed – spent three days straight together,” she said. “Within a week, I was living in his van.”

■■HAVES V HAVE NOTS
NZ wealth gap still growing The gap between the financial haves and have-nots is widening, according to a new survey. Young people, Maori and Pasifika, and those renting their houses continue to struggle to accumulate wealth, according to the annual investor confidence survey by Kiwi Wealth, the financial services arm of Kiwibank. “We still have a deep-seated, uneven distribution of wealth in New Zealand and the gap between those who feel wealthy and those who don’t has got worse since last year ... there are growing numbers feeling shut out of wealth,” Kiwi Wealth general manager of retail and product Melissa Vasta said. The survey showed the overall level of investor confidence was unchanged from last year, with 28 per cent saying they were more wealthy, 46 per cent saying their position was unchanged, and 26 per cent feeling less wealthy. However, those feeling more wealthy owned property along with other investments, while those feeling less well off tended to be renters and young, pointing to wealth perceptions being tied to property ownership. Vasta feared the gap would continue to widen in the aftermath of the pandemic. “The likelihood is that they will be disproportionately affected as a recession begins to bite and wealth prospects remain bleak for
many younger renters. They are faced with much higher costs of living and greater levels of debt than previous generations and, as a result, have limited or no capacity to save money and invest to create future wealth. Vasta said the survey was updated as the economy moved out of lockdown and it was clear that Covid-19 had dented the confidence of those with property and investments, because they had the most to lose. Conversely it seemed to give a spur to younger people to dip their toes into financial markets using digital platforms to take advantage of the market turmoil to start investing or to increase their existing investments. The report found that more Kiwis had investments or savings than in February, and nearly a quarter of those with investments made a change to their investment, which is what would normally be expected over a full year. “Most likely that’s because people were spending less during lockdown so have more discretionary money to put towards savings or investments,” Vasta said. “People were putting in more money into their investments rather than reducing it which is very good to hear. “In fact, fewer were withdrawing money from their investments compared to February.”
■■KATHMANDU
Caution remains, despite strong sales recovery Outdoor goods and clothing retailer Kathmandu Holdings’ full-year earnings are expected to be down by nearly a third despite a strong sales recovery post the Covid-19 lockdown. The group owns Kathmandu stores as well as footwear maker OBOZ and Rip Curl. The company’s earnings in 2019 were about $100m. Its adjusted earnings before tax for the 2020 financial year is expected to be $70m. Total group sales for the 10 months ended May 31 were down 15.1 per cent on the same period last year. Online and store sales for the last six weeks were up 21 per cent at Rip Curl, and 12.5 per cent at Kathmandu. The company said there remained significant risk over future economic conditions following the conclusion of government-assisted packages, further Covid-19 outbreaks, and the impact of lower-foot traffic on CBDs and stores in tourist areas and travel restrictions. It said despite a strong recovery in sales, it remained cautious about medium-term levels of consumer demand. In April, Kathmandu Holdings completed a successful equity raising of $207 million to strengthen its bal-
ance sheet as well as its liquidity position. It said, based on the Group’s current assessment of the operating environment, available liquidity in excess of $300m was expected at the end of this financial year.
■■EMPLOYMENT COURT
Court challenge thrown out The Employment Court has thrown out an appeal by an Auckland retail operator ordered to pay $100,000 for exploiting migrants. Shalini was fined last June for underpaying and overworking seven migrant employees working at two liquor stores and a dairy. The company appealed, saying its director had already agreed to pay the workers out, and it couldn’t afford the fine. But the court has dismissed the challenge saying labour exploitation can never be justified.
“Not only does exploitation violate workers’ rights and their personal dignity, it also allows some businesses to gain a commercial advantage over employers who are committed to doing the right thing by their people and meeting their legal obligations,” Labour Inspectorate regional manager Loua Ward. “It also undermines New Zealand’s reputation as a good place to work and to trade with.” The Labour Inspectorate investigated Shalini Limited’s employment practices after receiving a complaint in 2017.
■■MAORI BUSINESSES
Dramatic turn in export numbers Maori businesses have quickly gone from their best year of export sales on record to their worst. New figures from Stats NZ show Maori authorities exported a whopping $741 million worth of products last year, setting a new record high. With Covid-19 putting unprecedented strain on the global market, that figure is however expected to take a dramatic turn. The latest figure is up $46m from 2018, and export sales have climbed every year since 2015. Iwi Collective Partnership represents 20 iwi-owned fisheries companies and its general manager Maru Samuels said Maori authorities could expect to see that trend take a massive nose dive. “We’re going from our best year to potentially our worst year. “It’s definitely going to show at the end of this year,” he said. Kaimoana including fish, crayfish, and mussels, was the top export for Maori authorities at $365m, almost half of all exports last year. China remained the top export market, accounting for $354m, but with Covid-19 disrupting that market Samuels said Maori fisheries companies had been hit particularly hard. “Covid certainly hasn’t gone away, the impact of Covid on our businesses still continue,” he said. “I think it’s going to continue for another year or two. “Even as late as last week there was a recent closure to the Beijing area due to a Covid flare-up and that had an immediate impact on New Zealand lobster exports.” Te Arawa Fisheries business leader and chief executive Chris Karamea Insley agreed Covid-19 would continue to impact export sales for at least the next year, but he remained optimistic about the future of Maori fisheries and other sectors Maori were big players in, such as agriculture. “We’re in pretty good shape as Maori in this space. “Why do I say that? Because despite all of those changes that are going on and all of those blockages to markets that are happening around the world, the one thing that we know the world will continue to demand is food.” Insley suspected Maori businesses were actually in a better position than non-Maori businesses to survive post Covid-19. “In relative terms, as Maori, we haven’t been as impacted as mainstream non-Maori businesses because we carry much lower levels of debt. The Pakeha businesses, the big farms especially, carry a lot of debt,” he said. “They’ve got the added pressure now of servicing that debt while markets are struggling.”

ndian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, have a heavyweight lineup, packed with a host of new features and benefits. With the Thunder Stroke 116 (1901cc) engine now available in select models, a completely redesigned Ride Command system, and the introduction of the aggressively styled Roadmaster Dark Horse and redesigned Springfield Dark Horse, the Indian Motorcycle 2020 heavyweight lineup is bigger, better and badder than ever.
“The majority of these new features and upgrades are a result of our consistent communication with riders, listening to their feedback and incorporating it wherever possible in our ongoing product development efforts,” said Reid Wilson, Vice President for Indian Motorcycle. “Today’s rider wants more power and expects cutting-edge technology, all packaged in a modern look that’s tough and aggressive. “That’s exactly what the 2020 Indian delivers.”
For the first time in the company’s history, Indian Motorcycle offers the Thunder Stroke engine in a 1901cc (116 cubic-inch) variation. Straight from the factory, the new 1901cc air-cooled V-Twin engine features a new high-flow cylinder head – delivering class-leading performance with 168Nm of torque. The Thunder Stroke 116 will now be standard in the majority of Indian Motorcycle’s lineup, including Springfield Dark Horse, Chieftain, Chieftain Dark Horse, Chieftain Limited, Chieftain Elite, Road-
master and Roadmaster Dark Horse. This year Indian Motorcycle introduced Ride Command with Connected Services – a completely redesigned version of its industry-leading infotainment system. Still measuring seven inches, with glove-touch technology, Ride Command features a new quad-core processor to provide the fastest infotainment experience available. New features include traffic and weather overlays, so riders can plan their ride to avoid traffic and poor weather conditions.

Impressive double-act
I
t’s pretty much immediate, the Zoom-Zoom feeling that you get sitting behind the wheel of this CX30. Indeed it’s rather like being seated in an MX-5, but one that’s even more suited to South Island winter driving conditions. As well it has the ability to comfortably seat four adults, and sufficient gear for a weekend. There’s only one rider, that being they on board pack up no more than they are going to realistically need, because luggage space is a useful, but still neat 317 litres, or two-up with rear seats folded there’s 1319 litres available. So where did we venture to? Well in this case, a couple of nights in snow-clad Tekapo, where despite overnight temperatures of around minus 8˚C the hot pools and village itself were decidedly busy. Ideal driving conditions therefore to appreciate the benefits and surefootedness of the on-demand, quick responding i-Activ all-wheel-drive system. This has, as does the latest CX-5, an additional electronic traction assist function for the likes of tricky ski-field roads/tracks. Both the GTX and Limited versions of the CX-30 have this all-wheel-drive system together with 2.5-litre petrol engines and six-speed autos. The entry GSX comes with a 2-litre petrol engine, six-speed auto and frontwheel-drive. But just what is this CX-30, which is now the fifth SUV/Crossover in Mazda NZ’s range? Well, Mazda identified a gap in the mar-
ket for another that would fit between the smaller CX-3 and its best selling CX-5. Hence the CX-30, named as such because the is already an existing and completely different, Chinese market-only CX-4. The CX-30 isn’t a stretched version of the CX-3, but a new model based on the latest Mazda3’s under-pinnings, and it also mirrors the 3’s curvaceous styling. The ever-shifting reflections from this meant it was rather a challenge to photograph. Also, both of the CX-30 and Mazda3 were finalists in the design section of the recent World Car of the Year competition, with the award going to the latter. Size-wise, while just 120mm longer than the CX-3, the combination of this and very smart cabin design means it feels more spacious within than would seem possible from outside the vehicle. Mazda’s ‘less is more’ approach (there’s few physical buttons) continues in the cabin, where the MX-5-like driver cockpit means a natural and comfortable position with all dials and controls easily visible and accessible. Expectedly, there’s a quality feel and appearance to the the dash and its high tech fittings. The infotainment system has an 8.8inch wide screen, complete with sat-nav, phone-mirroring and more, the operation of all which is simple and straightforward via the intuitive console controls. There’s also an excellent head-up system, which as well as showing the driving speed, also shows the posted speed limit together with the adaptive cruise control setting.
Roger Hart MOTORING
The climate-air system deserves special mention, for while the GTX doesn’t have the heated front seats, or leather of the Limited model, the heating system is everso-quick to heat up the cosy cabin that the extra chilly outside temperatures didn’t matter at all. The efficient 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine which appears in many vehicles within the Mazda range, for the CX-30 produces 139kW at 6000rpm. Peak torque of 252Nm happens at 4000rpm, it pulls away eagerly from not much above idle, and then is as keen to rev as you wish. 100km/h open road cruise is at 1900rpm, and the claimed overall fuel use is 6.8L/100km. The 500-plus kilometres driven was an indicated 7.4L/100km. While the smooth adaptive auto has ‘just’ six-speeds, my drive-time with the CX-30 showed no more are needed! Also, while there’s a sport setting together with manual select, this engine/ gearbox combo just keeps on reacting just as you want it to when left to do its own thing. But it does so in an impressively quiet manner, which is also absolutely in
keeping with the notable way that road and wind noise is absent. Handling has always been a Mazda hallmark, and while you are sitting a little higher (there’s 175mm ground clearance) and there’s not quite the cornering ability of the Mazda3, it still certainly lives up to expectations of the companies Zoom Zoom philosophy with its precise, well weighted steering, agility and surefooted all-wheel-drive grip. The comprehensive i-Active safety features (some of which give lots of audible reminders) result in the CX-30 receiving one of the highest possible ANCAP scores.
MAZDA CX-30 GTX ■■ Pricing: $44,990 + ORCs. (GSX $41,490 and Limited $50,990) ■■ Engine: 2.5-litre, four cylinder petrol 139kW @ 6000rpm and 252Nm @ 4000rpm. ■■ Transmission: 6speed auto. On demand all-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 6.8L/100km. ■■ Safety: 5-star NCAP – comprehensive driver assist/safety systems. ■■ Size: Length-4395mm, width 1795mm, height 1540mm and wheelbase 2655mm Turning Circle: 10.2 metres ■■ Tows: 1200kg (braked) ■■ Warranty: 5-year unlimited km. (also for roadside assistance) plus 5 years/100,000 km (whichever occurs first) servicing at no extra cost.
FINALE In an already crowded compact SUV/Crossover market segment, this very easy to live with, smart-looking CX-30 impresses. Not only is it suitably spacious, comfortable and safe, it can also be a rewarding drive both on winding country roads then easy to both drive and park in builtup areas.

■■OPINION
Does North and South criteria miss a trick?
T
he North versus South game is a go. The much-proposed inter-Island derby is set for a return next month, in a throwback exhibition game. The very notion of the fixture is a natural progression from Super Rugby Aotearoa, tapping into the rugby hub of the country while making use (and monetising) a now unscripted rugby calendar post-Covid, with the NZR’s international partners and resources now cut off. The union now has to dig itself out of the financial quandary from within. The August 29 matchup will ultimately serve as an All Black trial, with the return of international code still an unknown factor. As far as the motive to go ahead with such a game, no one is disputing this. Any opportunity to showcase
the country’s playing elite going toe-to-toe will be welcomed universally. The selection criteria which was already generating curious discussion prior to the game being announced last week has been outlined with All Blacks coach Ian Foster confirming elegibility will be based on which province players made their first class debut for. It presents some awkward selection scenarios for some players. The Barrett family’s allegiances will be split, with Beauden set to represent the North and Jordie and Scott, having both debuted for Canterbury, in line to play for the South. Their father Kevin “Smiley” Barrett, himself a staunch former Hurricanes and Taranaki stalwart probably has an opinion. Other precedents include Jack Goodhue, Anton Lienert-Brown

and Damian McKenzie. Goodhue, who hails from the Kauri tree north and was educated at Mt Albert Grammar, will likely front for the South, while Lienert-Brown and McKenzie will front for the North. Lienert-Brown attended Christchurch Boys’ High School, while McKenzie grew up in Invercargill and finished his schooling at Christ’s College. McKenzie himself has come out and said he feels torn if he was to front for the North, given his roots are with the South. It begs the question as to what does this game wants to embody,
and whether selection should have been based on schooling. Surely, if the NZR wanted to simplify the paradigm and bottle some back-to-your-roots tribalism, basing elegibility on schooling makes sense. As time has worn on, rugby’s provincial tribalism has become less of an ingredient in the professional era, which you could argue has impacted the standing of the Mitre 10 Cup. Rivalries at the grassroots seem to endure, sometimes to OTT levels. Look at the out-of-control buildup to the St Kevin’s Waitaki game. The Christchurch College match remains hotly contested, whether you agree with its passe ties or not. Before the game was announced, State of Origin was alluded to as a point of comparison.
The success and rivalry of Origin has evolved from a deep-seated and vaguely political rhetoric around game governance before its conception in 1980. It has also become one of the most effectively marketed sporting events in Australia. It is also bolstered by the historical lack of reach of league internationally, establishing Origin as the code’s indisputable pinnacle. At this stage, it is doubtful whether that same sort of antagonism can be replicated in this neck of the woods on the big stage. In the end, does it really matter. Not really, we’re all going to tune in. However, whether you believe the game is anything more than the old New Zealand A v Barbarians clashes, the match might be a bit of a misnomer.

Leicester’s slide continues Third-placed Leicester City’s winless run since the restart of the Premier League season has continued, with a 2-1 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park. Everton grabbed the lead in the 10th minute when 19-year-old Anthony Gordon did well on the left, pulling the ball back and into the path of Brazilian Richarlison who slotted home. Carlo Ancelotti’s side doubled their lead, in controversial circumstances, when Michael Keane and Wilfred Ndidi challenged for a header in the box and after a long VAR review, referee David Coote ruled the Leicester midfielder had handled the ball. Gylfi Sigurdsson confidently converted from the spot – Everton’s first penalty of the season – and with his side 2-0 down at the break, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers made a double change with James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho introduced. The switch had a swift impact with the visitors pulling one back six minutes after the restart, when Jamie Vardy caused panic in the Everton box, Iheanacho sought the loose ball and Mason Holgate’s clearance hit him and flew past Jordan Pickford. England keeper Pickford then survived a scare when he fumbled a low cross from Marc Albrighton but Keane was alert to clear the ball off the line.
But although Leicester were on top for stretches of the second half, they struggled to create openings against an Everton defence that was well-marshalled by Keane. The Foxes had looked a safe bet for qualification for the Champions League but need to quickly get back to winning ways after two draws and a loss since the resumption. “I assume the responsibility for the results. “That’s what I’m here to do,” said Rodgers, who side host Crystal Palace on Saturday (local time). “We’re in a strong position. We still have it within our hands to achieve what would be a dream for us. “Since we’ve come back we’ve not got the performance right. The second half was better. “We need to win on Saturday.” Ancelotti said he was not giving up hope of a late push for a Europa League slot. “There are a lot of teams involved. “We are happy to be involved and would like to be so until the last minute of the last game,” said the Italian. Leicester stayed on 55 points, one more than fourth-placed Chelsea. Everton moved up to 11th on 44 points and they are unbeaten in nine Premier League matches at Goodison Park – seven of those since Ancelotti took over as manager.

Warrior on his way home The first Warriors player is returning to New Zealand, with Leivaha Pulu leaving the squad in Australia to come home for family reasons. Pulu’s pregnant wife has been involved in a car crash in Auckland. Although her condition is not serious, Pulu has opted to leave the Warriors camp on New South Wales’ Central Coast and return to Auckland. Pulu is one of three players, alongside David Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo, who last week expressed their desire to come home, with the NRL still not able to get special exemptions for family members of some players to entire Australia.
The clearances for family were promised to Warriors players by the NRL before they agreed to relocate across the Tasman. The New Zealand club have given the NRL until July 19 to get the exemptions, and the three players agreed to stay on the Central Coast until then. The NRL has given the Warriors clearance to bring in another loan player to cover the departure of the forward. Interim head coach Todd Payten had confirmed the club were already drawing up a list of potential replacements for Pulu, Fusitu’a and Maumalo.

Barrett may be out for season
Crusaders captain Scott Barrett could be out of action for up to four months after undergoing foot surgery, his coach Scott Robertson says. Robertson said it would be about 12-16 weeks before Barrett would be able to play again, which could also affect his chances of playing for the All Blacks, if tests are arranged later this year. Travel restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19 mean the international schedule is still in doubt, though reports in New Zealand and Australia have suggested a Bledisloe Cup series could be played in October. Robertson also told reporters ahead of their Super Rugby Aotearoa clash
with the Highlanders that promising loose forward Cullen Grace would be out of action for up to two months following surgery to fix a broken thumb. Robertson’s side have won their first two games of the 10-week competition involving New Zealand’s Super Rugby teams, and can overtake the unbeaten Blues at the top of the table with a win. The Blues have the bye this week. Robertson said the decision to make five changes for the clash with the Highlanders was aimed at keeping the side fresh. “We wanted to make sure that we could give the majority of our squad, or as many as we could, game time,” he said.

Canterbury Cricket snap up Fulton Peter Fulton has stepped down as Black Caps batting coach to take up the role as head coach of the Canterbury men’s team. The former international was appointed to the national post in August 2019 and travelled with the team to Sri Lanka and Australia as well as working on home tours against England and India. Fulton said he had enjoyed his time with the Black Caps, but the opportunity presented by Canterbury Cricket was too good to ignore. “It’s been an honour to get back involved with the national team and I’d like to thank the players and staff for making me feel so welcome,” Fulton said. “The Canterbury role appealed to me in terms of my aspirations to be a head coach and further my development in the game. “The chance to spend more time at home with my young family and coach my home province

were also motivating factors in applying for the job. I’ve still got a month to run on my contract and look forward to seeing the team at the upcoming winter camps as we return to cricket.” NZC GM High Performance Bryan Stronach congratulated Fulton on the appointment and wished him well. “Pete’s a respected figure who has contributed a lot to the Black Caps set-up and built strong relationships in his time with the team. “He’s carved an impressive pathway as a coach, from the New Zealand Under 19s to the winter training squads and now moving into a head coach role, which we’re fully supportive of. “With the Black Caps entering a winter period at home we’ll take some time to consider our options in terms of a replacement for Pete.” Fulton begins his role with Canterbury Cricket on August 1.

The Highlanders will have a different front row and changes out wide for their clash against the Crusaders on Saturday. The team has made five changes to its starting line-up to play the Crusaders in the southern derby at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin. Daniel Lienert-Brown, Liam Coltman and Jeff Thwaites form a new front row, while the trio from last week drops to the bench. Forwards coach Clarke Dermody said the side was lucky to have the depth to be able to make those changes. “We are fortunate to have some depth in our front row so we have the ability to make changes, this is a tough competition and as always the Crusaders will present a real challenge on Saturday night.” Meanwhile, injured winger Sam Gilbert is replaced by promising utility Ngane Punivai, while Michael Collins comes in for Scott Gregory at fullback. Aside from that the team remains unchanged from the one which was narrowly beaten a week ago by the unbeaten Blues at Eden Park. The game kicks off at 7.05pm on Saturday. Highlanders: Michael Collins, Ngane Punivai, Rob Thompson, Sio Tomkinson, Jona Nareki, Mitch Hunt, Aaron Smith, Marino Mikaele-Tu’u, Dillon Hunt, Shannon Frizell, Josh Dickson, Paripari Parkinson, Jeff Thwaites, Liam Coltman, Daniel LienertBrown. The former South Africa rugby player Mahlatse Ralepelle has been given an eight-year ban after he was found guilty of a doping offence while at the Sharks in 2019. This is his second ban after he served a two-year suspension between 2014 and 2016 following a positive out-of-competition test while at Toulouse. The hooker played in 25 tests for South Africa – his last appearance was against England in 2018. He was the first black player to skipper the South African national team when they faced a World XV in England in 2006, but the match did not have test status.

Barron starts stint with Mark Jones Junior driver Ellie Barron’s hoping a change of scene will equate to a chance of luck, with the Southlander moving north for a short stint at Mark Jones’ Burnham stables. “I was just keen to learn a bit more, especially at a stable that’s always supportive of junior drivers.”

On Sunday at Addington she will team up with his trotter Kowhai Sundown as she tries to secure her first driving success since winning in Invercargill on March 1. That followed four winners in February. “I felt like I was on a bit of a roll before Covid ….” Barron has had the odd spell in
Canterbury before, working for her uncle, Ken Barron. This time she’s staying with him – “we’re flatmates” – and working at Jones’ Overport Lodge just down the road. Barron is best known for her quick actions that saved fellow driver Ricky May’s life after he collapsed during the Central Otago Cup at Omakau in January. A
trained physiotherapist she performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived. Just how long she’ll be in Canterbury is uncertain. She says it’s just “for the time being” with the likely scenario she’ll return south in the spring. “All of dad’s (Clark Barron) horses have been turned out but by the end of September/October
they will be ready to rumble.” In the meantime, she’s looking forward to driving some of Jones’ horses, the likes of Burnham Boy, Plutonium Lady, Lulu Le Mans and Willison. She’s driven 10 winners since her first in 2018, with the bulk of them for Ashburton trainer Brent White.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The gap between a dream and the reality of the situation has been quite wide for a while. Now, you’re in for the thrill of closing that space and bringing something truly fantastic at hand. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Communication that starts with “no offence” or “with all due respect” usually ends with offence and disrespect. When people declare themselves upfront, flip it. The opposite might be truer. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): People with achy hearts will find their way to the sweet balm of your warm attention. You do not have to do much to help them feel better, and, in fact, you’ll be most effective when you keep it brief. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You don’t think about earning another person’s trust because you are the real deal and it wouldn’t occur to you that anyone would doubt it. Masqueraders abound, but there’s no substitute for the real thing. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Change happens. It’s a day to use a pencil, not a pen. Or, more likely, a day not to text or email because, if you change your mind later, you can’t take those back. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You are kind to everyone you talk to and everyone you deal with, and it’s because you genuinely want to contribute to the good experience of others. Be wary of anyone who treats servers badly. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What would you most like? You can have what you set out to get, as long as you stick to one thing. If you chase after two or more things, you’ll end up empty-handed. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If there is a discrepancy between what’s on your face and what’s in your heart, that’s emotional labour. Recognise the ways you work and give yourself credit – and breaks when you need them. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): To move from point A to point B, you’re going to need more than perseverance and a plan. You’re also going to need the best team you can find. Magic brews as you start talking about this. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): A good mentor may come from a different background and work in a different field and still have exactly what you need including a treasure trove of mistakes and the learning that goes with that. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): This is an intensely psychological game. Whether you win or lose will depend on your ability to accurately sum up a situation. Watch and predict before you make your move. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Someone will be willing to sacrifice along with you to help you realise a goal. You’ll have to demonstrate your own sacrifice first to know from whence your support shall come.
