Traffic hold-ups worst ever seen

Locals are querying the district’s capacity to handle heavy traffic after “shocking” hold-ups on Monday. As vehicles hit the road home from Warbirds over Wanaka, Ed Sheeran’s Dunedin concerts and other Easter getaways, travellers reported four-hour journeys from Timaru to Ashburton, and kilometre long queues in the northbound lane at Hinds throughout Monday afternoon and evening.
Traffic was seen crawling at less than 10km/h in Rakaia, Tinwald and Hinds throughout the afternoon and by 6pm, NZTA issued a congestion warning. They said there was heavy traffic between Hinds and Ashburton on SH1 and urged drivers to keep driving safely despite the inconvenience of the delays. At 8.30 they advised the roads around Hinds had mostly cleared, but the road through Rakaia was still congested. Prior to the weekend, NZTA warned up to 21,000 extra cars would have been

using State Highway 1 on the weekend due to Ed Sheeran’s concerts alone. Now locals have taken to social media to express concern around the capacity of the roads to handle other events in the future – mooting ideas such as four- lane roads, rail services, town bypasses, and better traffic management.

Shots fired at transport plans By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon has hit out at the Government’s latest land transport announcement, saying regions will suffer because of it. Transport Minister Phil Twyford yesterday released the draft Government Policy Statement 2018 on land transport, which he said was an important step to making New Zealand roads safer. The draft GPS prioritises safety, access to a wider range of transport options, the environment and value for money, Twyford said, adding that the government is seeking feedback from local government, the transport sector and community groups on its proposal. “With road deaths increasing every year since 2013, this government is prioritising safety improvements. We’re going to invest in what makes the most difference – regional and local roads, and targeted improvements to the state highway network,” Twyford said. “This new approach requires a shift in transport investment. We are proposing increases to most activity classes, with specific fo-
cus on regional roading improvements, state highway maintenance and public transport, along with new investment in rapid transit and rail. This will help us create a resilient, efficient, safe and responsible transport system,” he said. That didn’t wash with Falloon. “I’m absolutely gobsmacked at what Phil Twyford has proposed. He’s ripping four billion dollars out of the National Land Transport Fund over the next decade to put into central Auckland rail. “The NLTF (National Land Transport Fund) is funded by petrol taxes and road user charges. It’s what NZTA and councils use for road maintenance and for new roading projects. “If Mr Twyford wants to build rail in Auckland he should find the money elsewhere, not from money used for maintaining and enhancing our roading network. “Phil is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Places like Ashburton will be worse off, with our petrol taxes that should be used for a second bridge over the Ashburton River, and a four-lane highway through to Christchurch, instead going north to Auckland.”

Radio host stops off for a selfie By Katie todd

Dozens of locals added a selfie with Jay Jay Feeney to their phone’s camera roll yesterday afternoon. The Kiwi radio personality is travelling New Zealand attempting to take 5000 selfies with fans, and yesterday made a stop-off at Ashburton’s chess
board to meet her Ashburton listeners. Locals who take a photo with Feeney and upload it to Instagram enter the draw to win $5000 and, so far, over 1500 selfies have successfully been posted. Feeney began her trip on March 19, after ending her 13-year stint as a host of The Edge. She is due to begin a new job on More FM later this month.
Traffic hold-ups worst ever seen From P1 Ashburton resident Murray McFaull said after experiencing the worst traffic he’s seen in his life – taking an hour and a half between Hinds and Fairton – the solution seemed obvious. “It’s not the first time it’s been held up but it was chronically bad, and it’s only going to get
worse,” he said. “We need to sort out the bridges and stop the traffic bottlenecking at Ashburton.” One Hinds resident, who asked not to be named, said the situation needed better management, because it was “aggravated by a number of queue jumping drivers.”

RNZAF swoops in for LandSAR training By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
Local emergency services spent a little of their Easter Monday upskilling in the sky over Hinds, thanks to a special visit from the Royal New Zealand Air Force. On the way back from Warbirds over Wanaka, RNZAF No. 3 Squadron swooped into Hinds for a training session with Methven and Rakaia LandSAR volunteers and Timaru police. Rakaia LandSAR volunteer Murray Bowden said it was a chance for staff to familiarise themselves with the squadron’s helicopter and have a go on the winch. The helicopter is very different from anything local, he said, “but
we could end up working with it on a job.” Around 30 volunteers and police took part along with Zeke, Bowden’s LandSAR dog. “We also needed to desensitise Zeke to being winched on a bigger helicopter, just so he’s a bit easier to handle … but he was pretty happy once he got his feet back on the ground,” Bowden said. The action also lured a crowd of 20-30 local onlookers who later had the chance to look through the helicopter. Bowden said it was a rare and valuable opportunity for volunteers. “Things like this are pretty far and few between.”

Flu vaccines begin to be rolled out By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury general practices expect to have the 2018 flu vaccine arrive any day as distribution kicked off throughout New Zealand yesterday. The Ministry of Health said exact delivery dates would depend on when individual practices placed their orders with Healthcare Logistics and pre-orders were filled first. “Usually, all practices will receive vaccine stock within a
fortnight of vaccine distribution beginning,” a ministry spokesperson said. Each year about 1.2 million doses of the publicly-funded vaccine are distributed around the country and the majority of the 2018 batch would be distributed this month. The timing of the vaccine’s arrival varies slightly every year, depending on the make-up of the vaccine, and in recent years has been between early and late March.
“In recent years, influenza has not reached winter seasonal levels until after late May,” the spokesperson said. This year’s influenza vaccine will protect against four strains, including the newer strain of A (H3N2) referred to in the media as Australian flu, which circulated in the Southern Hemisphere last winter and more recently severely affected the Northern Hemisphere in its current season. The vaccine is manufactured in Europe and air-freighted to New
Zealand, where it is checked before being couriered to practices and other vaccinators. The vaccines must be kept at a constant temperature of between two and eight degrees celsius throughout the delivery process. Tinwald Medical Centre practice manager Christine Dodge said she was expecting the vaccine’s arrival any day now. And staff would begin offering the vaccine on the same day as it arrived, to patients who had appointments that day.

They would send out a text to those who were in high risk groups and staff at the centre would also be among the first lining up to receive it. The vaccine was about three weeks later this year due to having to be updated with the new strain. It had been an anxious wait for some, Dodge said. For example, a patient who was travelling recently had wanted to get the jab before they set off on their trip.

■ EASTER
Easter is Christians’ biggest celebration Mid Canterbury Christians turned out in their droves over the Easter weekend to mark their most significant celebration of the year. Representing the Christian foundation belief of life after death, Easter commemorates the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Easter may not get the most publicity, but in the eyes of the church it’s the most important celebration we have,” Anglican Parish of Ashburton people’s warden Gwen Clucas said.
Pictured is the Easter Sunday service under way at the parish’s St Stephen’s Church in Ashburton. It was attended by about 100 people, making it the biggest Easter service for the parish over the weekend. Other services included a Tenebrae service on the evening before Good Friday, and a Good Friday service. Easter Sunday services at the parish were also held at St Stephen’s chapel, St Andrew’s at Tinwald and St Peter’s at Allenton.

High praise for Cirque Grande By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
A bright, big top circus tent in the Ashburton Domain lured a steady stream of visitors over Easter weekend. New Zealand’s brand new Cirque Grande spent its Easter weekend in Ashburton, delivering six shows to audiences of all ages. Cirque Grande’s Jocelyn Spicer said it had been a relatively quiet series of shows for the
circus, likely due to the number of people out of town, however, audiences in attendance praised an “amazing” show. Crowds gasped and cheered as performers attempted stunts including a fire limbo, hat juggling, hoop jumping, extreme wine glass balancing and a finale in which 14 acrobats road a single bicycle. Audience members were also invited on stage to partake in skipping and other clown acts.
Cirque Grande boasts talented performers plucked from all corners of the globe, including a large consortium of young Chinese acrobats selected from a dedicated circus school. It is on its first tour of New Zealand and will spend next weekend in Oamaru. When the show returns to Ashburton, it will have a completely different selection of performances, MC Edward Clendon said.

Celebrity Simon Barnett is calling for concert stadium managers to offer more clarity over standing in seated areas after he was involved in an argument at the weekend. And Dunedin mum Clare Dangerfield has complained to Forsyth Barr Stadium management following the conflict with Barnett at the Ed Sheeran concert in Dunedin. The former Ashburton College head boy spoke to his More FM breakfast show listeners and then later to the Guardian yesterday about how his night at the concert was ruined. He said that it was only into the second song of the concert, when a woman behind him addressed him by name and told him to sit down. He said he sat down “like a scolded school boy”, but later turned to the woman and explained he would sit down now but later on would be standing. It was at a concert where everyone around was standing, Sheeran told everyone to stand, and when his wife Jodi asked security what to do, they told her it was okay to stand. Barnett said he offered one of the women in the group behind him his seat after a health issue was mentioned, but she did not want to move. He and his family then went down to the pitch area, however, security told them to go back to their seats. Barnett and Jodi were at the concert with their two daughters and a friend. Barnett said he was now advocat-
ing for stadiums to allocate specified areas solely for seated patrons and concert tickets to clearly say whether people are allowed to stand or not. “Otherwise how do you get 10,000 people to sit down if you are not in the mood for dancing?” he said. Dunedin mum Clare Dangerfield yesterday said she had laid a complaint with Forsyth Barr Stadium management. She said she was sitting with her sister and her 12-year-old twins at the concert. Barnett and his family group in front were standing and blocking their vision, when she asked Barnett to sit down. He sat down initially, but then turned around and told her he was entitled to stand. He stood for most of the concert and she felt let down by the security guard who informed him and his family it was okay to do that. “I think if security had nipped that in the bud, we all would have been happier,” she said. “We had every right to be there and sitting, but he wasn’t taking on that consideration.” Dunedin Venues marketing and communications manager Kim Barnes said if patrons choose to stand up in the allocated seating areas it should be with consideration of the patrons around them. She acknowledged security would have said to the Barnetts they were allowed to stand. “(However), if there were complaints made by patrons whose views were blocked, then ideally the guards would approach and talk to the standing person and ask them to be mindful of people behind them,” she said.

Restricted fire season ends BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
As cooler weather, shorter days and dewy mornings descend on the district, it’s goodbye to the restricted fire season for another year. Fire and Emergency New Zealand revoked their restricted fire season for Ashburton on Feburary 23 and for the Canterbury High Country zone yesterday, meaning permits are no longer needed to light fires anywhere in Mid Canterbury. When the restricted fire season was first imposed in December, local firefighters were bracing themselves for critically dry conditions. Following a wet winter, a dry hot end to spring and endless hot summer days, Fenz said a total fire ban would be likely. However, it was about that time that it started raining, deputy principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said. No fire ban was put in place and firefighters have been mon-
Don Geddes itoring conditions since January for the right time to revoke the restrictions. “We’re into autumn now … and we feel that the risk is so reduced now that it is safe to revoke the restrictions,” he said. Although fires can now be lit without a permit, Fenz was warning that “there is still an expectation that all outdoor burning is conducted in a safe manner”. Geddes said it was a matter of applying good common-sense and staying considerate of those nearby. More information can be found at checkitsalright.co.nz

Strong gathering of Rovers hits Ashburton The 76th New Zealand Rover Moot was held at the Mania-o-roto Scout Park over Easter weekend. Rovers are part of the scouting movement, aged 18 to 26. There was about 150, mainly from throughout New Zealand and Australia at the event. Ashburton Rover Thomas Brown said it had been
fantastic to see such a strong gathering in the town. Ashburton was taking its turn to host the event, held at a different New Zealand location each year. “It was really good and jam-packed full of fun activities, all in the Canterbury area,” he said. Banksy print up for auction Auctioneers expect as much as $50,000 when a signed Banksy print goes under the hammer next week. A premier edition screen print of Girl with Balloon is being auctioned by Art+Object on April 12. The print is signed by Banksy and dated March 9, 2011. It measures 700mm x 500mm, and is expected to sell for between $3050,000. The famous Girl with Balloon work was originally painted in London in 2002, in West Bank. While it is rare for a signed print to be up for sale in New Zealand, an exhibition of the street artist’s work was in Auckland for the summer. The Art of Banksy was curated by former Banksy manager Steve Lazarides. It features 80 pieces of the artist’s work, worth around $40 million. The catalogue for the April 12 auction is available on Art+Object’s website. – NZME

Reduce road speed limits – report An international report has suggested that reducing the speed limit on rural roads to 70km/h and 30km/h in some urban areas would save lives. The report, released by International Transport Forum, found that a one per cent increase in average speed resulted in a one per cent increase in fatal crashes. The release of the report coincides with a record high road toll of 108 after six people died on the roads over Easter. The inter-governmental think tank recommended the speed limit of 70km/h as the maximum speed a “safe” car can protect the vehicle occupants in a head-on collision. The 30km/h limit was preferred in areas with a high density of vulnerable road users as the risk of death is about 4-5 times higher in collisions between a car and a pedestrian at 50km/h. Lower vehicle speeds also reduced negative effects of motor vehicle use such as greenhouse emissions and noise pollution.
Ten year plan for road safety Improving road safety is a main focus of the government’s transport policy statement covering its intentions for the next 10 years. Ministers released the draft statement yesterday saying the aim was to reduce New Zealand’s “appalling” road death toll. “With road deaths increasing every year since 2013, this government is prioritising safety improvements,” said Transport Minister Phil Twyford. Twyford said the previous government didn’t spend enough on road safety. “This new approach requires a shift in transport investment,” he said. Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter has previously said there would be more median barriers on state highways, and she confirmed that yesterday. Other features of the policy statement are access to a wider range of transport options, the environment and value for money. The policy statement will guide the government as it allocates more than $4 billion a year from the National Lands Transport Fund. It is open for public feedback until May 2. – NZN
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says that the government is looking at a range of road safety measures such as median barriers soon to be announced in the government transport policy statement. “There are certainly areas that we can hone in on where there’s enough evidence to suggest that it would make a difference and that’s what we should be doing - relying on the evidence that tells us what will make sure people will be safe on our roads.” National leader Simon Bridges says that reducing the speed limit was “a bit simplistic” and investing in infrastructure like medium barriers saved lives. “The reality is on the Kapiti Coast they went from dozens and dozens of crashes, some of them fatal and serious injuries too, once they put those medium barriers up - none. “So that investment in infrastructure makes a really big difference.” – NZN

OUR VIEW
Going slow on the open highway A
nyone travelling north or south along State Highway 1 through Canterbury over Easter would have been frustrated at the amount of extra time their journey took – but that could become the norm if a new report on speed limits gains any traction. The report, by the International Transport Forum, an inter-governmental organisation with 59 member countries, including New Zealand, recommends a speed limit of 70km/h on rural roads without a medium barrier, which is effectively New Zealand’s entire roading network except for motorways. It also calls for a 30km/h speed limit in urban areas where motorists share the roads with vulnerable road users, such as cyclists.
In justifying its conclusions, the forum says in the report that reducing speed by even a few kilometres can greatly reduce the risk and severity of crashes. It also said lower driving speeds also benefit quality of life, especially in urban areas as the reduction of speed mitigates air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, fuel consumption and noise. That’s all very well but I can’t see the idea of cutting the speed
limit gaining any sort of support here. Firstly, as someone who spends far too much time driving on SH1, I can tell you that, judging by the speed the majority of drivers travel at, most would favour a speed limit increase long before they accepted any sort of decrease. Like it or not, we are an impatient lot, with most of us in a hurry to get from A to B, rather than enjoying the journey. That’s just the world we live in and that’s not going to change any time soon. Drive up and down between here and Christchurch a couple of times a week and you’ll see what I mean. Increasing numbers of people, particularly in New Zealand, are commuting greater distances
than ever before and those people won’t want their journey slowed on the recommendation of an international group with a predominantly European membership. It takes me an hour and 20 minutes to drive to work in the morning and I would resist anyone trying to add another 20 minutes to half an hour to that travel time. Then of course there’s transport operators, for who time is money. The last thing they want to see is their trucks and vans spend more time on the road for no extra return. Those companies want efficiencies in terms of travel time. Sure they might save a bit on diesel by going slower but I’m sure they would argue that would
not cover what they would lose by not being able to achieve the same number of kilometres travelled – and deliveries made – that they do now. However, that’s not to say that I don’t recognise the very real correlation between speed and severe injury or even death as a result of an accident. Not only has it been proven time and time again, it’s just common-sense. Unfortunately trying to take something away from people who have come to rely on its existence – in this case a 100km/h speed limit – is only likely to be supported by a very few. While it might make sense on the surface, it would be too much of a hot political potato and, for that reason, it just won’t happen.

Not only do newcomers bring different skills, ideas and cultures into our district but they help to support our economy and contribute immensely to the social fabric of the community. It’s important for us to acknowledge the culture our newcomers bring with them and sharing their greetings is one small way of doing this. The flags have been budgeted from the town centre beautification and parking reserves accounts. Council approved the project as part of its new festive lighting programme. There are also new freestanding flags outside the Ashburton Public Library. Each season, the flags will be changed so make sure to keep an eye out for them. Welcoming Communities As part of our commitment to the Canterbury Mayoral Forum, I am the lead mayor of the Newcomers and Migrants Settlement work stream for the Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy (CREDS). Selwyn District Council and its mayor, Sam Broughton, are supporting Ashburton with this.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Our council ran the successful Start with a Smile campaign as part of CREDS and is now one of five councils around the country piloting Immigration New Zealand’s Welcoming Communities initiative. Welcoming Communities is designed to support local councils and their communities to become even more welcoming to newcomers – whether they are migrants, refugees, international students, or Kiwis returning from overseas or relocating from elsewhere in New Zealand. Last week I attended the final in a series of Welcoming Communities workshops that were run across the district. The workshops were held to find out how our community wanted to welcome new whanau/residents to the district. The feedback from the workshops will help to form a welcoming plan. It was fantastic to see participants getting involved and discussing their ideas. Kiwis pride themselves on being hospitable and accepting of others and the Welcoming Communities initiative will not only enhance this but give our community a tailored approach to help us be even more welcoming. I would like to thank eight of
our residents who shared stories of the work they are already doing to exemplify being welcoming in their respective fields. It was very heartening to learn more about their work and I encourage you to read about what they have been doing on www. welcomingcommunitiescanterbury.com Ambassadors Last week, I met with the United States ambassador to New Zealand, Scott Brown. I was delighted to share an overview of our district with him and talk about our employment, housing, population, water and MAR trials. In March I meet with Jesus Domingo, the Filipino Ambassador to New Zealand, and I invited him to attend the council meeting scheduled to be held on May 17. These relationships are important in championing our community. I look forward to sharing any future engagements with them. Scouts meeting Over the Easter break, Ashburton was lucky enough to host the Scouts New Zealand 76th Annual Rover Moot at Mania-o-Roto Scout Park. I attended the opening cer-
emony and formal dinner and enjoyed getting to learn about the history of the event. The Moot is held each year on Easter weekend and is a gathering of scout Rovers. This year’s theme was Euromoot and was a celebration of Europe. Attendees were decked out in lederhosen for an Oktoberfest themed night, competed as different representatives of countries in a Eurovision music contest and wore their finest for a night in Monaco dinner. During the weekend, attendees were also able to take part in tours, sports and community service projects. It was a fantastic opportunity for these young people to get a taste for European culture and I know the Mania-o-Roto scout group were thrilled to be hosting their peers. It is opportunities like these that help to showcase our district and assist it to thrive. CHRISTIAN COMMENT
What motivates you to get up in the morning?
A
while ago, a question in a magazine advertisement caught my attention: “Is it an alarm or a calling that gets you out of bed in the morning?” I like that question. I think it’s something we need to ask ourselves. What gets your blood pumping? What really motivates you? All of us have something we live for, some passion or ideal that drives us on and gives our life a sense of purpose and meaning. For many it is a relationship, for others it is sport as with the athlete’s competing in the Olympics. Our son was a regional and na-

tional fencing sportsman who for a number of years was so focused that on his bedroom wall hang a poster that said Second place is the First Loser. I am sure that we all know people who are like focused whether that be towards career, sport, service club, hobby or a relationship. So what is your master passion? What really motivates you?
If you had to sum up in one phrase what you actually live for, what would you say? I look around this town and see so much good work being done by groups and individuals amongst the disadvantaged, the elderly, and the sick. Often when speaking with them they are very modest about why, but when you look further they are often people of faith with a deep Christian ethic of helping the needy. The Apostle Paul stated what he was passionate about and what he lived for. “For to me, to live is Christ”. And indeed, it is what all believ-
ers should be living for as well. Indeed, if we look around within our community, those that are out there are often driven by that same motivating factor that drove Paul. I am privileged to know a number of youth and young people in our district and in Canterbury who are so passionate and motivated, some with excellent degrees, others still training in the medical field, whose sole focus in life is to serve the deserving poor here and in the third world. These are the new movers and shakers who will impact the world; they will staff hospitals, start orphanages, build schools
and see organisations such as World Vision and Tear Fund grow. Bill Gates has often said that it is the geeks that will run the world but it’s the youth and young people with the same motivation as the Apostle Paul who will change the world. Winnie Mandela dies Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, an anti-apartheid activist in her own right whose reputation was sullied by scandal, has died. She was 81. Madikizela-Mandela will be honoured by a state funeral on April 14, preceded by an official memorial service on April 11, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said after visiting her home in Johannesburg’. Ramaphosa described Madikizela-Mandela in a televised tribute as a “champion of justice and equality” and a “voice for the voiceless”. The woman many South Africans have described as the Mother of the Nation and a champion of the black majority, died “surrounded by her family and loved ones”, according to a statement released by Madikizela-Mandela’s family. Madikizela-Mandela was the second of Mandela’s three wives, married to him from 1958 to 1996. Mandela, who died in 2013, was imprisoned throughout most of their marriage, and Madikizela-Mandela’s own activism against white minority rule led to her being jailed
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela during the 2013 funeral of her ex-husband, Nelson Mandela. PHOTO AP for months and placed under house arrest for years. “She kept the memory of her imprisoned husband Nelson Mandela alive during his years on Robben Island and helped give the struggle for justice in South Africa one of its most recognizable faces,” the family said. However, Madikizela-Mandela’s political activism was marred by her conviction in 1991 for kidnapping and assault, for which she was fined.
She faced these allegations again during the 1997 hearings before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a panel that investigated apartheid-era crimes. As a parliamentarian after South Africa’s first all-race elections, she was convicted of fraud. Still, Madikizela-Mandela remained a venerated figure in the ruling African National Congress, which has led South Africa since the end
of apartheid in 1994. She continued to tell the party exactly what is wrong and what is right at any time, senior ANC leader Gwede Mantashe said. Nobel laureate and former archbishop Desmond Tutu, a periodic critic of the ruling party, noted her passing by describing Madikizela-Mandela as “a defining symbol” of the fight against apartheid. “She refused to be bowed by the imprisonment of her husband, the perpetual harassment of her family by security forces, detentions, bannings and banishment,” Tutu said. “Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me, and to generations of activists.” Madikizela-Mandela had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year, according to her family. She had back surgery a year ago. After hearing of her death, people gathered evening outside Madikizela-Mandela’s home in the Soweto area of Johannesburg to sing tributes. The family said it will release details of her memorial and funeral services when they are finalised. – AP
Michael McIntyre coming Michael McIntyre will play two arena shows in New Zealand – but you’ll have to wait till next year to see him. The British comedian will perform at Christchurch’s Horncastle Arena on June 18, and Auckland’s Spark Arena on June 20, next year. Michael McIntyre, known as Britain’s biggest comedian, and is known for various roles across television and movie screens. He was last here in 2016. “It felt like we were at a rock concert – people bought merchandise, grabbed beers, took selfies, and when McIntyre came on, they cheered as if their favourite band had just taken the stage,” wrote reviewer Siena Yates.

Teenager survives 12 hours in sewer A 13-year-old boy has been miraculously rescued after falling into a river of sewage in Los Angeles, getting swept away and spending more than 12 hours in the city’s toxic and maze-like underground sewer system. Jesse Hernandez had been playing with other children on wooden planks over an access portal to the sewer system during a family outing. When a plank broke, Jesse fell about eight metres and landed in fast-moving sewage, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The other children immediately notified adults, who called 911, initiating a frantic and exhaustive 12-hour search
of labyrinthine underground pipes using cameras propped on flotation devices. Rescuers finally found Jesse after seeing images of handprints on a sewage pipe. A sanitation crew rushed to the area and opened a manhole. “The first thing they heard was ‘Help!’“ Adel Hagekhalil, assistant general manager of the sanitation department said. The crew lowered down a hose to Jesse, who was about three metres deep in the pipe. “He caught onto the hose and was reeled back up,” Hagekhalil said. Rescuers gave him immediate medical attention, includ-
ing hosing him down to get rid of the sewage and cleaning out his eyes and nose with sterile saline, Humphrey said. Jesse immediately asked for a cellphone to call his family. A worker handed him a phone, and he called his mother. “He was happy, the family was happy,” said Hagekhalil, adding that rescuers were thrilled at the outcome. After an accident like Jesse’s, rescuers say the likelihood of someone being found safe diminishes by the hour. “They never gave up hope,” Hagekhalil said. “They wanted to bring Jesse back to his family.” About 731 metres of pipe had
been inspected when rescuers found Jesse less than a mile from where he disappeared. In addition to the massive rescue effort involving more than 100 people, Humphrey credited Jesse for his survival. Not only did he survive getting swept through sewage moving at 24km/h, he managed to find a pocket of breathable air and hang on until he was found, authorities said. “The odds of someone falling into such a pipe and surviving are slim. The odds were not in his favour, and many would call it miraculous, Humphrey said. “It’s obvious he’s not a quitter.” – AP
No marriage for Minogue Kylie Minogue has said she does not think she will ever tie the knot, revealing: “I don’t think marriage is for me.” The Australian singer, 49, split from fiancé Joshua Sasse in February 2017. But Minogue, who has been in several longterm relationships, told Red magazine she never pictured herself walking down the aisle. “I never thought I would get married,” she said. “Just going through ‘being engaged’ seems like an experiment, because I’d never as a girl or in all my life had a vision of getting married. Now I’m going to stick to my previous view. I don’t think marriage is for me.” The Spinning Around songstress said she did have to rebuild herself after her break-up with actor Sasse.
■ RUSSIA
Protests at loss of elections in Russian city Several thousand people rallied in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city, to protest official plans to cancel direct mayoral elections. The incumbent mayor, Yevgeny Roizman, attended the rally in the Ural Mountains city, urging public resistance to the regional legislature’s plan to have the city mayor appointed by the regional legislature. Provincial lawmakers are to consider the move yesterday. Roizman, elected in 2013 for
five years, said the abolition of direct elections would deal a blow to democracy and hurt the city’s interests. “We mustn’t give up that right,” he told the crowd. “It’s a matter of our dignity, a matter of preserving the face of Yekaterinburg.” The 55-year-old Roizman is a rare figure in Russia’s officialdom. He has been the only regional official who dared to openly criticise President Vladimir Putin and praise his
most vocal critic, opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Roizman’s job, however, is largely ceremonial and doesn’t involve executive powers. The rally participants held placards reading, “We want elections” and “We don’t need puppets”. Anatoly Kostenko, who took part in the rally, said he thinks the plan to end mayoral elections was part of the Kremlin’s efforts to tighten control over Russia’s political scene.
“Finally we have stood up and don’t let them go on,” he said. “The final frontier is the municipal authority.” Another protester, Maria Khamitova, said that having an elected mayor helped the city achieve relative prosperity. “That’s why I think that (the direct election) is very important for the residents and we need to elect a mayor,” she said. – AP
Tatum’s split Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum say they have decided to “lovingly separate as a couple” after nearly nine years of marriage. The couple broke the news in a joint Twitter post, saying there are no salacious details behind the split. They say they are best friends who have decided their relationship has run its course. The two met on the set of the 2006 dance movie Step Up and married in 2009. They have a four-year-old daughter. Tatum has starred in box office hits like Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street.

■ CRYPTOCURRENCY
Pensioners’ debt wiped
Crypto investors warned crypted using Blockchain technology that regulated the generation of new units and verified fund transfers. It operated independently of any central bank and could be transferred without going through a bank. The IRD said that tax was also applied when one cryptocurrency was swapped for another, reminding investors that they didn’t need to change the currency to dollars for tax to be applied. Similarly if cryptocurrency was received as payment for goods or services, this was also considered income and was taxable. “It’s important to keep good records of your transactions as this information will be useful when filing a tax return,” Morris said. “Let Inland Revenue know if you think you haven’t got your past tax returns right so that it can be corrected. “Operating in the digital world doesn’t absolve you from your tax obligations,” he said. “It also doesn’t mean your activity is untraceable.” - NZME
Dreamworld inquest Families of the four people killed in the Dreamworld ride disaster have waited a long time for answers but could be closer to learning what happened as an inquest into the deaths begins. The anticipated coronial probe will get under way this week, although it’s not expected to hear any evidence until later in the year. The former Ardent boss Deborah Thomas will be paid $3000 a day to attend the inquest. When Thomas left Ardent last year it was reported she received a $730,000 payout and would also receive the daily amount for attending the inquest. - AAP

($27.8b) a month. What worries monetarists is that the institution is already pre-committed to stepping up the pace to US$50b by September and seems determined to carry out its plan regardless of the monetary effects. The Fed’s bond sales automatically slow the growth of bank deposits and curtail money creation. Some evidence is already visible in the rate of loan growth in the US, which has slumped to zero over the last five months. The eurozone is at a different stage of the cycle but the money data are nevertheless disturbing. Simon Ward, from Janus Henderson, says the growth rate of non-financial M3 has dropped to 2.3 per cent over the last three months, the slowest since the eu-
rozone debt crisis. “They are clearly going to be in a lot of trouble by next year,” said Prof Congdon. The central bank is running out of options. It has already pushed its balance sheet to 42 per cent of GDP and is near the technical and political limits of QE. Ward said “narrow” M1 money in the eurozone has been plummeting since last September, with a sharp fall in real M1 deposits in France and Spain that has attracted little notice so far. Britain seems to be slowing in lockstep. In a recent note, Janus Henderson went as a far as warning that “monetary alarm bells” are ringing ever louder in the UK. - NZME

Stock markets on red alert Key monetary indicators in the US, Europe, Japan and China are flashing signals of an economic slowdown later this year, raising fears of a global recession in 2019 and a stockmarket slump without a shift in policy. Monetarist experts warn that the global money supply is slowing much faster than widely appreciated, suggesting that the shift away from quantitative easing by the major central banks is already starting to have profound consequences. The data appear incompatible with forecasts by the International Monetary Fund and other global bodies for a synchronised global upswing this year. The growth rate of the broad M3 money supply in the US – covering a wide range of deposit accounts as well as cash – has dropped to a six-year low and is flirting with “stall speed”. Over the last three months the measure has slumped to an annual rate of 2 per cent in the US and 1.2 per cent in Japan. Broad money is often a powerful predictor of economic activity a year or so later. Professor Tim Congdon, from the Institute of International Monetary Research said the US Federal Reserve has misjudged the full impact of reversing QE and may be making a serious policy error by withdrawing stimulus too quickly. “I don’t think there will be a recession because the Fed will change course, but there may well be a ‘growth recession’, and it is a big threat to asset prices,” he said. The Fed has been cutting its balance sheet by US$20 billion
It has been revealed that thousands of pensioners who were incorrectly overpaid $3.8 million in superannuation have had their debts wiped off. A total of 7659 such overpayment debts were written off by the government between 2013 and 2017, according to information released under the Official Information Act. The highest individual debt the Ministry of Social Development decided to waive was $43,301 in 2016, while the average value of the debts written off was between $344 and $655. - NZME

The Inland Revenue Department is reminding cryptocurrency investors of their tax obligations in new guidance released today. For tax purposes cryptocurrencies – essentially money that exists only in digital form – would be treated like property, Inland Revenue (IRD) said. Its customer segment leader Tony Morris said although trading in cryptocurrencies happened in a digital realm, tax obligations still applied in New Zealand. “Just like with property – when you acquire cryptocurrency for the purpose of selling or exchanging it, the proceeds you make from selling it are taxable,” Morris said. “The purpose is hard to argue here since with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, generally the only time they produce an income is when they change hands.” Morris said IRD had put out the information in response to questions about tax responsibilities on its site. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Litecoin are some of the well-known examples of cryptocurrencies. Such currencies were usually en-

On her way to see Ed Sheeran in concert on Friday, Guardian photographer Laura Bagrie stopped to stretch her legs and have a break from driving at the beach in Oamaru. As could only happen to animal obsessed Laura, she came across lost dog Tiara. Tiara didn’t know she was lost though and was waiting patiently for Laura to throw the stick from the top of the cliff. So the five-minute stretch of the legs that Laura planned, turned into a game of fetch and a long walk to find Tiara’s owner. Forty-five minutes after arriving, Laura was back on the road.

Pascoe our flag-bearer
Unfinished business
Sophie Pascoe has been named as New Zealand’s team flag bearer for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The announcement was made by chef de mission Rob Waddell in front of around 500 people at the ballroom of the QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise yesterday. The venue will moonlight as New Zealand House for the duration of the Games. Waddell says Pascoe epitomises the team’s values and culture. “What this athlete does transcends sport and touches the hearts and emotions of every New Zealander. She is an inspiration. “She will follow in the footsteps of some of New Zealand’s greatest sportspeople when she leads the team into the opening ceremony tomorrow night.” Christchurch-based Pascoe won two gold medals at Glasgow in 2014, her first Commonwealth Games. She has also won 15 medals as the country’s most decorated Paralympian. Pascoe heard the news a fortnight ago. “It’s humbling to have been chosen out of the many world
Men’s Black Sticks veteran Shea McAleese put it best summing up New Zealand’s record since hockey debuted at the Commonwealth Games in 1998. The men’s side secured silver at Manchester in 2002 and bronze at Delhi in 2010. “This is my fourth Games and the three previously we have definitely underachieved. “I was having a talk to [coach] Darren [Smith] about it; we were fifth in Melbourne, third in Delhi and fourth in Glasgow. “Traditionally we haven’t gone as well as we would’ve liked.” The 33-year-old made the statement with clinical candour. He said those circumstances led to the “sole reason” he was still playing after racking up 258 caps. “Because I’ve got a huge belief in this group. Post-Rio [Olympics] I contemplated retirement, but the talent coming through has given me the desire to keep playing and chasing gold. “I’m excited for the Games to begin. It feels like there’s some unfinished business.” New Zealand are currently ranked ninth in the world, but fourth in this event. - NZME
New Zealand’s flagbearer Sophie Pascoe. champion athletes we’ve created in New Zealand. “I wasn’t considered as a Paralympic athlete, I was considered as one of the athletes of the New Zealand team. It’ll be a moment to remember forever.”
Pascoe will never lead New Zealand into an Olympics, after an accident with her legs in a lawnmower accident as a toddler, but her position as the New Zealand swimming team’s queen-pin is undisputed.
The Commonwealth Games are often referenced as “The Friendly Games” under their “humanity, equality, destiny” mantra. As CG Federation president Louise Martin pointed out to the Herald last weekend: “This will be the largest fully inclusive para-sport event. I want inclusivity and accessibility for all athletes. We don’t have a separate Games, I don’t believe in that, because everybody’s equal. “We want to make sure everybody is recognised in exactly the same way with fairness and nondiscrimination. We must do that in everything we practise and teach.” Selecting Pascoe sets an example. She began swimming at seven years old when Paralympians Roly Crichton and Graham Condon were impressed by her potential and asked her to join the QEII Swim Club. Crichton has coached her for 14 years. She shares her training time between Auckland and Christchurch and generally completes 14 sessions per week. Pascoe entered the Games village yesterday following a training camp on the Sunshine Coast. - NZME

By Angelo Risso World No.4 Joelle King says the infectious energy of the Bristol squash scene has played a major role in her career resurgence as she guns for gold at this month’s Commonwealth Games. Coming off a miserable 2016-17 campaign in which she fell out of squash’s global top 10, Waikato-born King joined the stable of British guru Hadrian Stiff in an attempt to revive her career. The decision has paid almost immediate dividends. Spending time between tour events under Stiff’s tutelage in Bristol, King has soared back up the rankings. She won February’s Cleveland Classic against reigning world champion Raneem El Weilily and reached finals at the Macau Open, US Open and the World Series’ Windy City Open. As a result, the 29-year-old moved up on Sunday to fourth in the rankings – her highest spot since 2014. King, who the same day arrived with her Kiwi team-mates on the Gold Coast, put her uptick in form down to her Bristol stint. She said Stiff had helped her play a more composed game. “As athletes, we love routine – but sometimes you get a bit stuck in your routine and things get a little stale without you knowing,” King said. “Just a bit of change, something completely different to what I’ve ever done before, and (it) just kind of sparked some love. “There’s a few players around (in Bristol) who are on the tour and just being surrounded by other people doing the same thing as you, day in and day out, it’s infectious – you feed off each other.” King and men’s competitor Paul Coll headline New Zealand’s Gold Coast squash tilt, with both players in gold-medal con-

She’ll kick off her singles campaign in the 64-strong Games field tomorrow against either Pakistani Madina Zafar or Wales’ Deon Saffery. More demanding challenges will follow against medal contenders including Brits Laura Massaro and Sarah-Jane Perry, Australian Donna Urquhart and Malaysian Nicol David. King, who is seeded second for the Games, behind Massaro, isn’t looking too far beyond her first-up clash. “There’s a lot of players that on their day can really cause problems – it’s not just about the final,” she said. - AAP

History on our side A peep at history should inspire New Zealand’s team of 250 as they begin their 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games campaigns. This is the fifth Commonwealth (or Empire) Games to be held in Australia, and New Zealanders have produced memorable performances at all of them. Here’s a quick look at our Games highlights in Australia over the years.
In brief Nine to miss opening The Nine Network won’t be attending today’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on the Gold Coast. Organisers have suspended the network’s accreditation until further notice after a clip of Saturday’s ceremony dress rehearsal was broadcast in a Sunday evening news bulletin. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation chief executive Mark Peters confirmed yesterday Nine’s accreditation won’t be reinstated until after the opening ceremony. Nine has apologised for the broadcast, which it says was simply a mistake. - AAP
Walsh’s missing medal
1938, Sydney
Finding a gap on Tom Walsh’s mantelpiece might require the services of a Tetris wizard these days. The 26-year-old shot putter has claimed almost every title in the sport, and became the first New Zealand male to secure a medal in an Olympic field event with his bronze at Rio. However, on April 9 he will attempt to upgrade a 2014 Glasgow silver to a 2018 Gold Coast gold at the Commonwealth Games. A new chapter in New Zealand athletics history could be written at Carrara Stadium, given how far Walsh remains clear of his Commonwealth competitors this outdoor season. - NZME
7 sports, 15 countries, 464 athletes. New Zealand won 5 gold, 7 silver, 13 bronze. The small New Zealand team returned home with an impressive medal haul. Distance runner Ces Matthews was the individual star, winning both the 3-mile and 6-mile races decisively. Matthews earned himself the sobriquet of “the Nurmi of the Empire” for his brilliant running. To be compared to Finnish running legend Paavo Nurmi was quite a compliment. Other New Zealand gold medals were won by Pat Boot in the 880 yards, and the lawn bowls pairs and fours combinations.
Amazing recovery
1962, Perth
10 sports, 35 countries, 863 athletes. New Zealand won 10 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze. It was swelteringly hot in Perth, but nevertheless several New Zealanders produced excellent performances. Peter Snell won the 880 yards-1 mile double, and Val Sloper (later Young) took gold in the shot put and discus. Murray Halberg was a dominating force in the 3-mile event. Away from the athletics stadium, Wally Coe boxed superbly to win the welterweight gold, tiny Dot Coleman was a popular winner of the women’s foil and the team of Bob McDonald and Hugh Robson won gold in the men’s pair. James Hill, who a short time earlier had been the only New Zealand representative at the inaugural world rowing championship, outclassed his single sculls rivals in Perth, and there was a second rowing gold when the New Zealand coxed four powered home first in a highquality final. There was drama in the swimming when England star Anita Lonsbrough won a hotly disputed gold medal from New Zea-
Ashburton Guardian 15
Peter Snell won the big double in Perth in 1962 and went on to become our most revered athlete. lander Vivien Haddon in the 110 yards breaststroke. The swimmers recorded the same time and many felt the New Zealander had touched first, under the water.
1982 Brisbane
11 sports, 46 countries, 1583 athletes. New Zealand won 5 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze. The indelible memory from Brisbane was the gold medal won by disabled archer Neroli Fairhall, after a titanic battle with Northern Irishwoman Janet Yates. Asked later by a British journalist if being able to compete while sitting in a wheelchair was an advantage, Fairhall answered tellingly: “I don’t know. I’ve never shot standing up.” Mike O’Rourke won a deserved gold medal in the javelin and in the women’s 3000m, Anne Audain won in brilliant style, closely followed by countrywomen Lor-
raine Moller (3rd) and Dianne Rodger (4th). New Zealand’s other gold medals were provided by shooter John Woolley (skeet) and cyclist Craig Adair (1km time trial).
2006, Melbourne
16 sports, 71 countries, 4071 athletes. New Zealand won 6 gold, 12 silver, 13 bronze. Moss Burmester continued a fine New Zealand tradition when he won the 200m butterfly. In previous Games, David Gerrard, Anthony Mosse (twice) and Danyon Loader had all won that event (or its imperial equivalent) for New Zealand. In the stadium, New Zealand athletics greats Nick Willis (1500m) and Valerie Adams (shot put) won golds. Both were to enjoy many more moments of Commonwealth Games – and Olympic – success in the following decade.
By 2006 team sports were a significant part of the Games programme and New Zealand won the sevens (only male rugby players competed in these Games) and netball golds and took silver in men’s and women’s basketball. The other New Zealand gold medallist in Melbourne was trap shooter Graeme Ede. For the Gold Coast, 71 countries will be competing, represented by a total of approximately 6600 athletes. Many of New Zealand’s sports superstars have won Commonwealth Games gold medals in Australia over the past 80 years. New Zealand is this year fielding its biggest ever Games team, and with a record 18 sports being contested, chances are several more of our sports heroes will add their names to the list of champions.
Australian road cyclist Steele Von Hoff looks set to compete in the Commonwealth Games less than two months after cracking four vertebrae in a crash. The 30-yearold was hospitalised on February 20 after a racing accident just hours after being named in his first Games team. But road team-mate Cameron Meyer, who will also race in track events in Brisbane from Thursday, says Von Hoff has recovered well enough to play a role on the Gold Coast circuit on April 14. - AAP
Chance to unite Aussies Australian flagbearer Mark Knowles believes the Commonwealth Games is a chance for the nation to unite after being torn apart by cricket’s ball-tampering scandal. Hockey captain Knowles, who will be leading the Kookaburras in his fourth and final Games, said he was honoured to carry the flag in today’s opening ceremony. But in the aftermath of the Australia cricket’s cheating saga in South Africa, Knowles hoped that the public would come together behind the Games team. “We’re trying to be elite in what we do every day, but we also need to inspire that next generation,” he said yesterday. - AAP
Rising sevens star ruled out of Commonwealth Games Emergency appendix surgery has ruled New Zealand sevens teenager Caleb Clarke out of the Commonwealth Games. The New Zealand Olympic Committee confirmed the 19-year-old was welcomed into the Gold Coast athletes’ village on Monday, only to be swiftly transferred to Brisbane hospital.
“He is scheduled to have surgery today,” the NZOC said in a statement. “He is being supported by the New Zealand team medical staff and his family. We wish him well for his recovery.” Clarke, the Blues wing named MVP at the Brisbane Global Tens tournament earlier this year, is
understood to have not been able to eat all Monday and gone under the knife early yesterday. The timing of his illness, two days out from the Games, could not be worse, but at least he is young and likely to get another crack in future. Clarke, originally named 13th man, is the second player to be
ruled out of the New Zealand team after young playmaker Ngarohi McGarvey-Black was forced to return home after injuring his ankle in a warm-up match against Australia. Etene Nanai-Seturo, left out of the initial squad, flew to the Gold Coast as a replacement for McGarvey-Black on Sunday.
A second replacement player for Clarke may now be required. In a blow for the women’s team, Kat Whata-Simpkins has been ruled out with a leg injury. Tenika Willison has been promoted into the squad of 12 and Alena Saili joins the team as the travelling reserve. - NZME

In brief
■ MAIDEN VICTORY
Sarah celebrates first win It’s taken a few months and a couple more drives than she would have liked, but Sarah O’Reilly is resting easy this week knowing that one of the biggest challenges in her short driving career to date is now behind her. The quietly-spoken youngster notched up the first win of her driving career at Motukarara on Sunday after 72 attempts when she found the perfect gap to push through with Highland Reign in the final race of the day. And in her succinct sort of way, the Kidz Kartz graduate was pretty chuffed. “It felt pretty good, especially after taking a while to come,” she said. While trying not to focus too much on it and adding pressure on her shoulders, O’Reilly said she’s just been trying to get as much experience as she can out there on the track and she’s had the assistance of some well-credentialed mentors, too. To borrow a racing phrase, O’Reilly doesn’t lack for anything in the bloodlines department. Her father is well-regarded horseman Gerard O’Reilly, while she’s also been able to call on the skills and expertise of her uncles, Patrick, Kerry and Leo along the way too plus the added experience of her employer, Bruce Negus. “Dad’s been great and has made sure I wasn’t worrying about it too much and just letting it happen. “But we have this new mentor
Chris Johnson has been confirmed as Savvy Coup’s rider in the Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m). Cotrainer Michael Pitman said Hugh Bowman had been approached for the mount, but he has opted to partner the Chris Waller-trained Unforgotten in Saturday week’s classic at Randwick. Johnson has an outstanding record with Savvy Coup, who will be on a flight to Sydney today, having ridden her in four of her five wins including victory in the NZ Oaks. - NZME
Time called on Rokkii New Zealand-bred Group One winner He’s Our Rokkii has run his last race. The decision to retire the son of Roc de Cambes was made after his unplaced performance in Saturday’s Gr.3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield. Trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, He’s Our Rokki won seven races including the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) in 2016. “He’s lost his zest for racing,” Ben Hayes said. “We tried every trick in the book to spark him back to form, but he just wasn’t racing to the capabilities of what he could.” - NZME

gest supporters of her in her career thus far. “Bruce is fantastic, he’s never put any pressure on me but allowed me to drive a heap of his horses and not been too worried about the result. He’s a great boss to work for, too.” With win one on the board,
it’s only onwards and upwards fand O’Reilly’s looking forward to what the future might hold. “I just want to be out there driving and learning and getting better all the time.” Picking up a win in Dad’s distinctive green and white colours is at the top of the list. - NZHN
■ RICCARTON
Stakes test next-up for undefeated filly Aptly-named filly The Precious One will head to Riccarton on Saturday for her first opportunity to add black type to her perfect record. The daughter of Darci Brahma and the multiple Group One winner The Jewel maintained her unbeaten record on her home track last time out when resuming from a six-month break. “Her jump-out was good and so was her work and we know the ability she’s got, but I don’t know yet how good she might be,” trainer Claire Anderton said. “She’ll go to Riccarton on Saturday for the three-year-old fillies’ race and go from there. “It’s a mile and she’s only been 1200m so far so we’ll know a lot more after Christchurch.” The next step for The Precious One is the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes (1600m) and regular rider Chris Johnson doesn’t expect the step up in trip to be a stumbling block. “Chris hasn’t had to ask her a serious question and he said she came back to him the other day and relaxed,” Anderton said. “He feels she will get over more ground. The New Zealand Racing Board yesterday announced an underlying operating profit for the first half of 2017/18 of $83.4 million, up $2.8 million or 3.4 per cent on last year. The figure excludes the net impact of strategic initiatives costs and benefits of $4.4 million. Including the planned investment and associated benefits from the strategic initiatives, reported net profit was $79.0 million, $1.1 million below last year however this was $2.9 million above budget. - NZME
Franco Nelson fails Shock of the night at Bathurst in the weekend came when former star Kiwi pacer Franco Nelson beat just one rival home as a $1.10 favourite in the Mayor’s Gold Cup. Outsider Sapphire Swayze led and Franco Nelson did early work to park outside him, but when the leader tired he locked wheels with the favourite and the drivers were unable to untangle. Mick Formosa’s evergreen eight-yearold Ultimate Art took advantage for a powerhouse win. - HRNZ
Golden outcome Hiyaam’s impact at the highest level has delivered a massive windfall to a pair of Kiwi breeders. The Mick Price-trained daughter of High Chaparral produced a commanding performance at Rosehill on Saturday to win the Vinery Stud Stakes in the hands of Michael Dee. Hiyaam was raised at Brighthill Farm and is out of the Zabeel mare Mazarine, who is from the legendary Eight Carat family. - NZME
Weetwood out of reach
Chris Johnson and The Precious One are on their way to Riccarton this weekend. she has to, she doesn’t work like a superstar.” Raced by her breeders Joe, Martin, Ray and Tony Dennis, she was untested to win her first two starts in the spring and was
being aimed at the New Zealand 1000 Guineas – a race her mother won in 2002. A stone bruise ruled The Precious One out of the Guineas Trial (1400m) before a joint issue
forced her out of the Guineas. “She’s fine now and it’s hard not to get excited, but at the same time we have to be realistic and see how she goes,” Anderton said. - NZME
Rising star sprinter Mr Marbellouz will struggle to make the field for the Listed Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba. Mr Marbellouz made it six wins from seven starts when he won a Class Six race at Doomben, and trainer Kevin Kemp hoped the win would lift Mr Marbellouz’s rating enough to make Saturday’s Weetwood. Mr Marbellouz’s win lifted his rating to 85 but he was still No. 17 in the ballot from 22 entries. - AAP

Khorabella camp confident
Khorabella “quite capable of winning” says Andrew Carston.
Andrew Carston isn’t short of runners at the Phar Lap Raceway today and he has tipped Khorabella as one to follow. “We’ve got 11 in and she’s going really well and is probably our best chance,” the Riccarton-based horseman said. Khorabella has been in good form this preparation and the Darci Brahma mare will be chasing an $11,500 bonus on offer in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1600m). The four-year-old produced a dominant performance two starts back to win her maiden with ease and at her most recent appearance she finished fourth, again on her home track, over 1400m. She raced back on the fence and finished strongly when into the clear. “The rail was out at her last start and I don’t agree with changing racing patterns so we rode her
back and she got home nicely,” Carston said. “She’s come through the race well.” Khorabella has been ridden in her last three appearances by Racha Cuneen and he will again be in charge of the mare, who will jump from the outside gate. “I’m not worried about the draw, she’ll be ridden quietly and she’s more than capable of winning,” Carston said. The stable also holds a decent hand in the Onceuponatime & Central SI O & T Association 1200m with Celtic Cross, Elusive Boxers and Vishnu engaged. All three have been in the money in recent outings while Petite Midas, a last-start third at Riccarton, and Suggestive Loox, who was an unlucky fourth at Wingatui, look strong prospects in the Three Valleys Sales Draft Dash (1200m). - NZME
M6 South Canterbury gallops
Juvenile’s season over Stakes-performed filly She’s A Thief won’t be seen again this season after she was forced out of Saturday’s Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). “She pulled up a bit scratchy after her final gallop and we didn’t want to risk a good filly, not being 100 per cent happy with her,” said Pam Gerard, who trains in partnership with Michael Moroney. “She’ll be back, bigger, stronger and faster for the start of her three-year-old season.” - NZME
Listed goal for filly Speedy southern two-year-old Xpressmymind will be on trial next time out for a stakes assignment. The filly will step out on her home track at Riccarton on April 21 and another bold showing could see her target the Listed Berkley Stud Stakes a fortnight later. Xpressmymind was a debut second before she provided her sire Shamexpress with his first winner when successful at Riccarton in February. She then finished runner-up behind Going To War. - NZME

In brief ‘I’ll be in charge’ Hawaiian businessman Richard Fale says he will personally drive the Warriors once his consortium completes the purchase of Auckland-based NRL club, probably this week. Many things point to the club being sold by Eric Watson – an owner since 2000 – within days and Fale said the parties would gather on “mainland United States” this week. Current CEO Cameron George has made a plea for any new owner to retain the current staff. Fale said four consortium members would come to Auckland to steer the club. - NZME
Fullback under fire The NRL’s integrity unit will wait for the outcome of an ACT Police investigation before deciding whether to take action against Canberra fullback Jack Wighton over an alleged nightclub fight. The underfire Raiders confirmed yesteerday their star fullback was the subject of a police investigation, believed to centre around a serious offseason incident. The NRL’s integrity unit was notified immediately by the Raiders, and Wighton has so far played in all four of the seasonopening losses as the investigation continues. - NZME
Chambers cops ban Melbourne’s Will Chambers will miss two NRL games after accepting the sanction for dangerous contact stemming from Friday’s fiery clash with Cronulla. The Test and Queensland centre yesterday accepted the ban after he was charged by the NRL match review committee for a grapple tackle on Paul Gallen late in the Storm defeat. His Melbourne teammate Dale Finucane also opted not to contest a dangerous contact charge, resulting in a onegame suspension. - AAP
Manly welcome Walker Injury-hit Manly are set to receive a timely boost from Dylan Walker, who’s expected to return from a broken leg for the NRL clash with Gold Coast. The Sea Eagles are counting the cost of Saturday’s win over Canberra after they lost Curtis Sironen and Kelepi Tanginoa to season-ending knee injuries and Tom Trbojevic for up to two weeks due to a sprained ankle. Trbojevic’s injury comes a week after winger Jorge Taufua was ruled out for eight weeks, leaving the Sea Eagles’ backline severely depleted. However, they appear to have found a saviour in Walker, who has undergone numerous surgeries on his ankle and shoulder. - AAP Melton 1, TBC RD Petroleum Tinwald v Northern Raiders, 1:30pm, Tinwald 1, G Jopson Waihora/Springston v Prebbleton/Rolleston, 12:00pm, Springston 1, TBC Lincoln Bye Under 14.5 Ellesmere/Mid Canterbury Combined Collegiate Combined v Lincoln/Rolleston, 1:00pm, Collegiate, N Forbes Hampstead v DI/L/S, 1:00pm, Hampstead 1, P Arnold Methven v Darfield HS, 12:15pm, Methven 3, G Barr Waihora v Celtic, TBC West Melton v Rolleston, 11:30pm, West Melton 1, TBC Prebbleton Bye College 1st XV College v Waitaki Boys, TBC, 1:10pm, K Opele

Kick-off looms
Historic win for NZ
By Linda CLarke

Mid Canterbury Football’s senior men’s side is starting the season on a confident note, with three wins from three outings in their preseason. The side has its first division two competition game against Hornby at Warren Park in Christchurch on Saturday and coach Marty Fitzgerald said they were primed for a good start. Hornby was one of three teams Mid Canterbury beat in its preseason but Fitzgerald said that would count for nothing when the side took the field on Saturday to contest competition points. “We beat them 4-0 in the warm-up, but we’ll be making little changes.” The 2018 squad has many returning players but also features some new finds, including striker Luke Martin, who has moved to Ashburton from Auckland. Fitzgerald said dedicated strikers were hard to find and the side was lucky to have his services and that of another newcomers Jordan Lugg, at right half, and Carlos Oyarzo at left half. “Jordan is strong on the ball and reads play well and Carlos has very good ball skills with the ball at his feet.” Rory Brown is back from Dunedin and experienced goalkeeper Lisandro is also back for another season after a break. The side will be captained by Ed Kettle. Several secondary school players that featured in the side last year are now at the University of Christchurch or at polytech and playing for city clubs. Fitzgerald said the Mid Canterbury side was well drilled after a good preseason and looking forward to the start of the competition. “We are strong all round the field.” Mid Canterbury Football will also field teams in the Masters grade and women’s division one, as well as youth grades. Methven Football has entered teams in division four and youth grades.
Ed Kettle lines up a big kick downfield.
New Zealand survived a dramatic final session to hang on for a draw against England, and secure a 1-0 series victory at Hagley Oval yesterday. Starting the final session at 191 for six, New Zealand had no chance of chasing down 382 for victory but bowlers Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner produced a terrific eighth wicket partnership to defy England. Wagner was out caught at silly point off England captain Joe Root, after a DRS review and the umpires then ended the match due to the poor light. The closing overs were played out to a ring of up to nine close catchers surrounding the batsmen through all England’s attempts to separate them until the very end. Sodhi finished unbeaten on 56, batting 200 minutes, facing 168 balls with nine fours, in his third test half century. “I’m rapt to be part of a series win,” said Sodhi. “Waggy is a fighter when he bowls and he dragged me along. There were tough periods when they bowled bouncers but it was a pretty true wicket. “I was disappointed with my performance with the ball so to be able to contribute is massive for me. “All I could hear was the Barmy Army at the end, their songs will be ringing in my head for a while.” The result means New Zealand end the test season with three wins and a draw and might earn them a climb to third on the International Cricket Council test standings depending on the result of South Africa’s test against Australia overnight. It is New Zealand’s fourth test

series win over England and extended to a record 13 the number of away tests England have played without a victory, dating back to Chittagong in 2016. New Zealand lost just one wicket in the final session. Allrounder Colin de Grandhomme, who had done well getting to 45 in 137 minutes, but momentarily lost the plot and hooked a catch to fine leg, slamming his bat on the ground in disbelief. However Sodhi and Wagner were up to the job, batting 107 minutes together. The pitch steadily deadened and although Root tried everything, switching ends with the bowlers and unusual field placings, England couldn’t find a way through. Having started the day at 42 for none, chasing 382 for an unlikely victory, New Zealand were in trouble early, losing two wickets to the first two balls of the day and by tea were 191 for six with 39 overs left. Sodhi had been promoted ahead of Tim Southee, who has been battling a viral complaint. New Zealand lost four wickets in the first session but as opener Tom Latham and wicketkeeper BJ Watling, two noted battlers, dug in hopes lifted that they could engineer a revival. However Watling went to a catch at leg slip by James Anderson off a short ball from fast bowler Mark Wood at 19. Then Latham, having got to 83, misjudged a sweep shot and was well caught low down by James Vince running in from deep square leg off left arm spinner James Leach. Latham had batted 282 minutes and faced 207 balls in his defiant struggle. - NZME

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Try on the motto, “Anything I can do, I can do better with friends,” and see how it fits. Today’s luck will be delivered as you reach out, especially with regards to a scenario you might usually handle on your own. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): One of the great social paradoxes: Everyone hates people who are universally liked. Better to be acknowledged by one person whose opinion you value than by hundreds you don’t even know. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Someday, when you’ve an urgent request or exciting news to share, you’ll discover your reach is extensive and your network is mighty fine. Why? Because of the goodwill you build on days like today. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Does it seem the more you learn, the less you know? Learning makes you aware of the vastness of available and unavailable knowledge. The smartest among us are comfortable with the unknown. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Romance is a kind of enchantment. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unreal, but it’s a spell, and like most spells, it can make the impossible happen. It can also be broken. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): When you casually connect with people just because you feel like it, you build bridges that extend from your world to theirs – bridges you’ll be able to cross more or less whenever you want to. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): No matter how genius the plan is, if you don’t follow it, it’s worthless. So the plan doesn’t have to be the “best” plan. It just has to be the stickiest one. The best plan is the one you’ll actually follow. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your great days tend to follow a formula: your favourite people, an interesting turn of events and a stroke of luck. Today’s efforts will help to set up a great day in your near future. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Perhaps the best way to destroy your enemies is to make them your friends. You disagree on many things but if you’re looking for it, you’ll also find you agree on many things. Find common ground. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The way you do something impossible is with a pretty simple equation. You do it in possible steps. Possibility multiplied by consistent effort over time equals impossible things done. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Love isn’t defined by a marriage certificate, the length of a relationship, or any single act. Learning isn’t defined by a certificate, class hours logged or a test score. Learning is like love. It is as it does. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): In a weird way, you don’t have to align yourself with like minds. Maybe they emit a kind of magnetic wave or something, because you seem to find them wherever you go today, and the alignment happens quite naturally.

Ashburton cricket supremo Bob Bruhns
Bob’s legacy in cricket BY LINDA CLARKE
LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton’s Bob Bruhns will be rubbing shoulders with the cream of the New Zealand Cricket community in Auckland tonight. Bruhns and his wife June will be attending cricket’s national awards night, where the veteran scorer will receive the community official of the year award. Bruhns has been official score keeper for Mid Canterbury in over 200 senior representative matches, including 100 Hawke Cup encounters, but his love of the game began well before he moved here in 1978. As a youngster going to Hyde Primary School in Otago, he and his brother would pretend to be Don Bradman or other cricket greats of the time, and he was told off by his teacher for scorekeeping in his schoolbooks. He was still at school when he debuted for
the Dunback senior club side. Those were the days before arm guards and helmets and the young Bruhns copped his fair share of balls to the head as opening batsman before deciding to end his playing days. His passion for the game morphed into umpiring and he officiated at New Zealand B panel level before moving to scorekeeping. Bruhns says he began keeping the basic runs scored/balls bowled in the scorebook but before long he was adding other layers of detail, like all balls faced and minutes at the crease. It was time-consuming and required extreme concentration – Bruhns did not see a lot of cricket as his head was down recording the details. The development of cricket scoring software has extended his officiating career as he can now watch the game and record what happens while his laptop calculates all

the required data. Bruhns uses Total Cricket Scorer, which provides live match progress as well as a host of information post-game that can be used for analysis and coaching. When he’s not scoring for Mid Canterbury, Bruhns is sideline for the Allenton club, keeping score of their runs and wickets. He says scoring by book is a dying art and players should at least learn the electronic version. His ringside seat over the years has given him the chance to be at international games, where he has spied early talent like Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga (Malinga the slinger), and at domestic games featuring the young Suzie Bates. Bruhns has been on the scorekeeping panel for two women’s world cups and says sitting alongside other scorers has been a way to make friends around the country and the world.
While the Australian ball-tampering scandal has been a negative for the sport, he says he has witnessed many acts of sportsmanship and friendship over the years in the greatest summer sport of all. The Bruhns’ will fly to Auckland today, where they will stay at the Pullman Hotel with other cricket stars. The event starts with a visit to New Zealand Cricket headquarters before moving onto the award venue at Auckland’s Viaduct. New Zealand Cricket says its community awards are an important way to thank volunteers and development staff who have put endless time and commitment into improving the game within their community. Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Mike Southby said Bruhns had also been responsible for digitising Mid Canterbury cricket statistics over the years. “It is a great legacy.”
