Brothers avoid jail in drunken assault Two brothers involved in a “frightening and dangerous” attack on two Ashburton police officers avoided prison when they appeared in the Ashburton District Court. The court heard earlier this year about the attack, when an associate was sentenced. A sole officer responding to a report of a car crash had been met by a drunken pack of people having a party at the Ashburton River in February, and subjected to harassment and abuse. The constable was threatened and physically assaulted. He had called for back-up and the
second officer was also assaulted. Kane Patrick Winter, 23, and Tyler James Winter, 18, faced sentencing in front of Judge Ian Mill on Monday. On two assault charges, one with intent to injure, and one charge of intimidation, Kane received four months and two weeks’ home detention with special conditions, and 100 hours of community work. Tyler was deemed to have played a lesser part in the incident, and on two charges of assault and one of intimidation, received 12 months’ supervision with special conditions, 120 hours of community work, as well as the same
sentence of 12 months’ supervision on an unrelated receiving charge. He was also ordered to pay reparation of about $240 in relation to the receiving charge, being the amount he had obtained from selling the acquired goods. Judge Mill heard from counsel Gretchen Hart that Tyler was the one person amongst the group on that night who had been trying to calm the situation down.

Ashburton Angels spread their wings By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
What started out as an idea between two friends just over a week ago has blossomed into a growing community of people willing to help out and give back to their community in times of need. Carolyn Rai and Debbie-Lee Powell made the Facebook group the Ashburton Angels last week and it has already grown to more than 300 members. The pair have been working to collect items such as toys, food and toiletries to distribute to those in times of need. They will also have Christmas presents to deliver to 30 families just ahead of Christmas. “Seven days ago it was just an idea and now it has grown into a group of more than 320 people,” Powell said. “We just started it up and it has been phenomenal the response we have received.” Donations they have received have been wide ranging, from toys to clothes for babies, kids and adults as well as food items. “We are there for anyone that needs help,” she said. The pair have also been assisting the Alexander family following

Donations of items for Christmas have been flowing in, with an anonymous business donating a large number of Christmas
cakes, while others have donated 30 chickens, 140 candy canes and chocolates. “Sadly there are people that are trying to take advantage of it,” Powell said. Some of the families that are on the list to receive the Christmas packages have seven or eight kids, while some others are single parent families. “We do have things for the mothers as well, while the kids may get a toy, a book and a piece of clothing, we do have things like deodorant or shampoo for the parents,” Rai said. “Often even if they can get the kids something for Christmas they don’t get given anything themselves.” While they expect the rush for the group will slow down following Christmas, plans are already being put in to place for Easter and they will be ready to spring into action should they be needed. “We had a prem(ature) baby born last week so we helped supply stuff like clothes for him which can be hard to come by and expensive,” Powell said. To get in touch or find out more information about the group they can be found on Facebook under Ashburton Angels.
Fix for ‘diabolical’ crossing in Rakaia will have to wait – NZTA By Jaime Pitt-MacKay
Tuesday. “I have three kids and cross the road with them and I’m amazed I haven’t been sucked under a truck along there, it is diabolical,” he said. Gurney suggested introducing pedestrian traffic lights that are solar powered that operate on a push-button only when they are needed. He reasoned the delays in traffic stopping for the lights would only account for around 30 min-
Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A small-town cop hoping to improve safety at a diabolical road crossing through his town has been told he will have to wait and keep voicing his concerns. Rakaia police officer Trevor Gurney voiced his concerns about having to cross State Highway 1 through the township at the Ashburton District Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee meeting on
utes every day and that traffic can often become backed up through the township at those times either way. “It is not going to make a difference to the traffic but it is going to make the community safer,” he said. New Zealand Transport Agency maintenance contract manager John Keenan’s response was that NZTA are aware of residents’ concerns in the township, but that
funding is creating issues in getting projects going. NZTA’s Simon Bird said that the major cost in installing something like traffic lights would not come from power, but from the installation. “The installation is a big cost, and we have to prioritise access to all areas,” he said. Speeds through the town are likely to be addressed through changes made via the NZTA Safe
Networks Programme Project which is proposed between the Selwyn River and Ashburton. Keenan said the first stage of the project has reduced in scale and will now likely focus on installing median barriers and speed limit reviews either side of the Rakaia township. The project is still in its design phase and Keenan said it would likely be a couple of years until actual work begins on the project.

■■ASHBURTON COURTHOUSE
Two new faces join JPs’ team By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton’s Justice of the Peace (JP) numbers swelled by two when Alan Harrison was sworn in to the role at the Ashburton District Courthouse on Monday, alongside mayor Neil Brown. The ceremony was conducted by Judge Ian Mill, who congratulated the pair and stressed the importance of their role. The Justices of the Peace Act 1361 in England empowered JPs to apprehend, arrest and punish offenders and rioters. “I want to discourage you from doing that when you leave the courtroom today,” Judge Mill joked. Nevertheless, it was a very important community duty that JPs performed, and one that was appreciated by judges and others. Mayors get sworn in as JPs as part of their role. Harrison had his wife Diana present at the ceremony, as well as two of their three children. The couple are also grandparents, and live on a lifestyle block, south of Ashburton, where they have race horses, sheep and a few chooks. Harrison was born and raised in Methven, growing up on the family farm. He moved to Ashburton in the 1970s. He left Ashburton College at the age of 16 to work at Wrightson’s, and still works in the livestock industry 45 years later, at Carrfields Livestock. “I’m just looking forward to serving the community,” he said.

Brothers avoid jail in drunken assault From P1 He said maybe Tyler could be distinguished from what the others were doing in the incident, which was marked by a pack mentality and getting completely out of control. However, the defendant seemed sorry about some things and not about others. “But you are just still a young man and you are learning a lot, hopefully through your experiences, and you won’t put yourself in this position again,” Judge Mill said. Judge Mill heard from counsel Marilyn Gilchrist that ADHD had played a part in Kane’s “impulsive decisions” on that night. “If he could go back in time and do things differently he definitely would,” Gilchrist said. A sentence of intensive supervision would allow someone to work closely with the defendant and help him get on top of his cannabis addiction, and provide support to engage with study, volunteer work or paid work, she said. “This was a frightening and dangerous situation for the two constables,” Judge Mill said. The constable who was injured had been in a desperate situation and injured as a result, including a burst blood vessel in his eye and a scratched cornea. His Honour reduced the sentence from the starting point of a term of imprisonment due to factors including the defendant’s young age and not having received a conviction previously.

Hospice tour goes off without a hitch By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
The Christmas Experience fundraiser for Hospice Mid Canterbury on Sunday went off without a hitch, raising over $20,000 for the charity along the way. Seven home owners from Ashburton, Tinwald and Lake Hood opened their homes and gardens for the inaugural fundraiser, which was described by attendees as a lovely girly day out. As the name of the tour would suggest all the houses were decked out in with a Christmas theme, but that is where the similarities ended as each home was a distinctly different size, style and age. The 5-metre charmingly decorated Christmas tree in the foyer of Kate and Hank Murney’s home made for a stunning Christmas welcome. Organiser Christine Todd attributes the success of the event to meticulous planning and hard work. “We started organising this in March,” she said. “The committee worked together to solve problems like bottle-neck issues at
houses well in advance. “It was a lot of hard work putting this together, but it certainly paid off, the day went very smoothly.” Ticket numbers were limited to 250 and chief organiser Barbara Redmond said that was only because they were heading slightly into the unknown. “Since this was our first time running the event we limited the numbers so we knew how many people we were dealing,” she said. “Limiting the tickets also provides the committee with a number to work off next time.” Ticket holders met at 9.30pm at Hospice Mid Canterbury headquarters on Park Street. There they were given a goodie bag filled to the brim with treats, and an information pack. The pack contained a list of the houses, what order to visit them in, as well as information on local cafes and facilities. Rounding off the day was a spot of shopping in the Ashburton Arcade where stalls were set up selling Christmas related goods.
Both Redmond and Todd expressed their gratitude for the generosity of individuals and businesses in Ashburton. “We were completely blown away by the support we received from the community,” Redmond said. “Not one person the group approached for sponsorship or help turned them down. “Thanks to these people all the money raised will go directly to Mid Canterbury Hospice.” The committee set up an Excel spreadsheet budget. “All the entries were on the monies coming in side and there was not a single entry on the monies to pay side. “That just shows what kind of town we live in, the support has been outstanding,” Redmond said. A big thank you was also extended to the home owners. Plans are afoot for another tour. “It may be next year or maybe the year after that.” The committee will have a debrief and decide where to go to from here.

EA Networks investing in the future By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Three Mid Canterbury students have won themselves scholarships that could not only ease their financial study burden but could also lead to future careers. Leanne Walsh and Carl Cayanan from Ashburton College and Harrison Hyde, Mount Hutt College, have been awarded EA Networks Jubilee scholarships that are worth $2000 but which also come with the offer of holiday employment and the prospect of post study employment. The scholarships were established in 1996 to mark the company’s 75th birthday and initially were awarded to just one student, but the calibre of applicants this year saw that extended to three, EA Networks board chair Phil McKendry said. Today the lines company was vastly different to the
company that was set up in the 1920s. There were great opportunities for talented people across a range of areas, he said. “It’s no longer men up poles in the wind and rain, we’re more of a technology company now with a big diversity in the skills we need,” McKendry said. Chief executive Gordon Guthrie said the company’s relationship with the scholarship recipients did not end when the money was handed over. The company would keep in touch with the three winners during their years of study, he said. Leanne Walsh will start the 2020 academic year at Canterbury University studying electrical engineering, Carl Cayanan will study computer engineering, also at Canterbury while Harrison Hyde will begin a Bachelor of IT at Ara.

Rakaia School steps back in time at the Plains Museum By Heather Mackenzie
Photographers@theguardian.co.nz
On Monday the Plains Museum played host to over 200 children plus parents and teachers from Rakaia School. Traditionally the school marks the end of the school year with a picnic, however this time principal Mark Ellis decided to opt for something different. “The weather has not been kind to us in the past, so we went for an all-weather option, and it’s worked out well,” he said. For many of the children this was their first visit to the museum and the first time on a train and Ellis said there was plenty of excitement as they drove in the gate. Split into four groups, there were smiles all round as they rode the rail-
Ashburton
car, explored the museum grounds, had a picnic lunch and watched a DVD on the history of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade from 1874 to 2000. Included in the day was a swim at the EA Networks Centre pool. Originally the plan was to use the pool in the Tinwald Domain, however that was not in operation so an alternative venue was offered by the Ashburton District Council. “The council were great and let us use the EA Networks Centre pool instead.” Dave Eddington, chairperson of the Ashburton Fire Museum said this was the first school group they had had there. “If more school groups wish to come on board and visit us they are very welcome,” he said.

OUR VIEW
As much as we’d like it to be, it’s not true I
n a perfect world, we’d live in our little bubble here in Mid Canterbury. Those big and nasty news stories you see about people breaking into other people’s houses or businesses wouldn’t happen, those even worse stories about people walking around bashing people over the head and changing their lives wouldn’t exist and when asked to pull over by the police, that’s exactly what every one would do. Sadly, that’s not the case. Earlier this week we highlighted some of the statistics around fleeing drivers in the Ashburton District in the past five years and it makes for pretty harrowing reading that almost two-thirds of those chases have resulted in pursuits being abandoned.
Actually, when you really sit down and think about it, that someone has not been killed in that time frame by someone fleeing from the police is nothing short of a miracle. In case you missed the story, here are the numbers. Figures released to the Ashburton Guardian through an Official Information Act request show that Police based out of the Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia police stations have
engaged in 57 pursuits since the start of 2014. Of those 57 pursuits, 38 were abandoned. But it gets worse, because the numbers are getting bigger, not better. A total of six pursuits were engaged in throughout 2014, while as of October 2019 there had been 12 pursuits. 2018 represents the worst year for pursuits, with a total of 15 taking place. On face value, you wouldn’t believe it. We don’t often hear about such instances until a driver is facing charges for failing to stop. But then again, the only time you usually do hear about them is when they end in tragic circumstances. The numbers are disappointing. There’s no beating around
the bush on that. And our local police have every reason to feel annoyed that they’re still having to chase after people who think they’re above being dealt with by the authorities. The topic of drivers fleeing police is a hot one here in Canterbury with Christchurch seemingly the worst location for the worst possible results in such situations. Mindsets of young drivers, and their invincibility – or a perceived amount of it – is truly horrifying and should be of great concern to everyone who uses the road, or areas around it. Ashburton’s senior sergeant, Leigh Jenkins probably hit the nail on the head best when he said that “it’s never worth it”
because irrespective of what the final outcome might be from someone choosing to run from the police when asked to stop – there’s never much coming back from making that decision. So, as much as we might like to think we’re immune from such behaviour and actions, the cold hard truth is that we’re right in the heart of it and the numbers around such a troubling and growing subject in society and it is particularly bad for our little part of the country. The answer however is simple. If we could just somehow drum it into young minds that stopping is the only option ever when you’re ordered to pull over then we wouldn’t have these numbers, New Zealand wouldn’t have these statistics and things would be much better.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, December 4, the 338th day of 2019. There are 27 days left in the year. Today’s highlights in history: On December 4, 1978, San Francisco got its first female mayor as City Supervisor Dianne Feinstein was named to replace the assassinated George Moscone. On this date: In 1875, William Marcy Tweed, the “Boss” of New York City’s Tammany Hall political organisation, escaped from jail and fled the country. In 1942, during World War Two, US bombers struck the Italian mainland for the first time with a raid on Naples. In 1954, the first Burger King stand was opened in Miami by James McLamore and David Edgerton. In 1965, the United States launched Gemini 7 with Air Force Lt. Col. Frank Borman and Navy Cmdr. James A. Lovell aboard on a two-week mission. (While Gemini 7 was in orbit, its sister ship, Gemini 6A, was launched on December 15 on a one-day mission; the two spacecraft were able to rendezvous within a foot of each other.) In 1966, Radio Hauraki ruled the waves. The pirate station broadcast its first scheduled transmission from outside New Zealand’s 3-mile territorial limit. In 1980, the bodies of four American churchwomen slain in El Salvador two days earlier were unearthed. (Five Salvadoran national guardsmen were later convicted of murdering nuns Ita Ford, Maura Clarke and Dorothy Kazel, and lay worker Jean Donovan). In 1986, both houses of Congress moved to establish special committees to conduct their own investigations of the Iran-Contra affair. In 1995, the first NATO troops landed in the Balkans to begin setting up a peace mission

t’s just a few weeks until the Government buy-back of prohibited firearms shuts up shop. What’s the story? Since March 15 the changes have impacted many firearm owners, including a number of farmers who are having to face the fact that some of their pest control tools are no longer a legal option. From December 20 compensation for handing in these firearms will end, and if caught in possession of them you will lose both your firearms licence and face possible serious prosecution. For anyone weighing up the odds of keeping a favourite firearm or a large capacity magazine stashed away – it seems to be a no-brainer. Get some money back for a firearm that you can no longer legally use and buy a suitable replacement or leave yourself out of pocket and put your business and hobby at risk. What’s the risk? Nicole’s a night owl Nicole Scherzinger and her fellow Pussycat Dolls stunned the world with their racy reunion performance on X Factor UK: Celebrity over the weekend but the feat’s even more impressive when you learn how little sleep Scherzinger runs on. “I’m quite a night owl,” she revealed, adding with a laugh that she usually fell asleep somewhere between 3am and 6am. She revealed that she’d headed to bed between 1am and 2am following the X Factor performance, before waking up again at 6am for a photoshoot. Precautions are taken, but it is far too late for many.
■■SAMOA
Measles crisis intensifies The family of a young boy who died from measles is pleading with others to immunise before it is too late. 18-month-old child Sione’s father and mother Lupino and Fala’i say the boy was very active with a healthy appetite. He fell sick with measles two Thursdays ago and died last Tuesday. It comes as the Samoan government announces a two-day government shut down on Thursday and Friday this week – with most government workers and resources put into an ongoing mass immunisation programme. At least 53 people have died
due to measles in the country since the outbreak began, most of them children. One of the deceased is 18-month-old Sione. Speaking to RNZ through a translator at the boy’s freshly laid grave, his mother and father say he was a “special kid”. “He was a very active kid, he engaged with the neighbours ... he had a healthy appetite,” Lupino says. “Unfortunately the Lord called him, it was his time.” He had not been immunised. “I encourage the parents to get their kids immunised, get yourselves immunised as well,”
Lupino says. “I’m very sad about my son, I feel very lost.” As the interview took place, supplies were being unloaded by Samoa Victim Support Group led by Lina Chang and their village representative. The SCSG team prayed and sang together, and carried large bags of clothes and food into the fale. Despite village life being so close and connected, grief can be isolating. For Lina, the food and clothes are important, but even more important is giving people someone to talk to. “We want to see how the parents are doing,” Lina says.
“If they need counselling we will provide for the counselling, what ever they need. “We laugh with them, we smile with them, we cry with them and we grieve with them – these people will always be family.” To double the heartbreak, Fala’i’s cousin, Ana Maiava died from cancer on Friday. When RNZ visited, her grave was being dug and the wall around it constructed. Now, this family are having to pick up the pieces, while The Samoan Victim Group get ready for their next visit. There seems to be far too many of those in Samoa.
Kate flaunts bikini bod Kate Beckinsale has been a busy bee on Instagram. The 45-year-old sent fans into a spin after sharing several racy bikiniclad photos with her fans. Kate, who was on holiday in Los Cabos, Mexico, treated her 3.6 million followers to not one but five snaps of her in two different bikinis. In one snap she posed in a room with its blinds down, sultrily pulling her hair away from her face as she looked down the barrel of the camera lens. In a second photo, she posed with her best friend Jonathan Voluck, who was also in his swimmers, teasing that they “sometimes swap speedos”.

Coach had sex with five students
Fiona Viotti
A water polo coach at one of South Africa’s most prestigious schools engaged in “sexual misconduct” with at least five students, an investigation has found. Married teacher and former model Fiona Viotti slept with her students and sent them explicit photos and videos, which were circulated on social media and even made their way to PornHub. The 30-year-old resigned from the Bishops Diocesan School in Cape Town in October amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old student. Viotti, the niece of former Springboks coach Nick Mallett, reportedly sent threaten-
ing messages to the student via WhatsApp when he tried to break off the relationship. She resigned with immediate effect after the news became public and the school brought in lawyers to conduct an investigation into the alleged “serious misconduct”. The school later announced that several more pupils may have been involved with the former teen water polo star, who was featured in South African Sports Illustrated in 2009 as one of its Beauties of Sport. Bishops announced it had completed its investigation – but that Ms Viotti could not be disciplined because she had resigned.
“As the teacher resigned from Bishops with immediate effect on the October 11, 2019, no disciplinary action can be taken against her by the school for these breaches,” headmaster Guy Pearson in a statement, News24 reported. The school said Viotti, in a letter from her lawyers, initially indicated she would fully co-operate with the investigation. “However, a request by the investigators for her to attend an interview with them was later refused,” Pearson said. “Furthermore, the investigators were informed that she was not prepared to make any written comments regarding the merits of the matter.”
Mental frontman dies Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith, one of the founders of Australian new wave/pop band Mental As Anything, has died aged 63. A message posted to the band’s Facebook page said Smith had suffered a fatal heart attack. “It is with an incredibly heavy heart to announce that one of the founding members of Mental As Anything, Andrew Greedy Smith passed away last night from a heart attack,” the statement read. Smith – who wrote many of Mental As Anything’s hit songs, including Live It Up – had been with the band since it formed in the late 1970s.

Tax expert lauds Microsoft settlement Microsoft’s $24.7 million settlement with the Inland Revenue Department was a “really good deal” for New Zealand in what’s becoming a global tussle for multinational tax receipts. Tax expert Robin Oliver – a former deputy commissioner at IRD – said the settlement was a sign that multinationals had accepted a global change in attitude towards profit shifting from one country to another, a strategy used by multinational companies to pay as little tax as lawfully possible. “New Zealand has traditionally been accommodating to multinationals, which has made New Zealand attractive to investment, but I think that is changing,” Oliver told BusinessDesk. IRD has been hardening its stance on profit shifting and multinationals are recognising there has been a “change in climate” on the issue, he said. That was part of a global move led by the OECD to clamp down on these strategies in an effort to encourage firms to pay tax in jurisdictions where they operate. In late 2017, IRD signalled it was auditing 16 multinationals over their use of transfer pricing, which the tax department estimated was trimming their collective tax bill by more than $100 million a year. Most of those audits have since been resolved, a spokesperson said. The latest to emerge is Microsoft New Zealand, which acknowledged a $24.7 million tax payment as part of a settlement deed with IRD in its June 2019 accounts lodged with the Companies Office. Previous accounts showed that IRD had been auditing the tech giant’s use of transfer pricing across
force, to be led by the Australian Security Intelligence Office, to monitor and tackle threats of foreign influence at a time when relations between Canberra and Beijing have been cooling dramatically. Similar concerns are at least part of the reason the US is attempting to prevent allies and other western nations from using equipment manufactured by Chinese supplier Huawei in the next generation of internet infrastructure, known as 5G. Other foreign countries have bans on foreign donations to political parties, with foreign and anonymous donations over $A1000 not accepted in Australia, while in Canada and Britain, the thresholds are $C20 and 500 British pounds respectively. The new law will require party secretaries and candidates to “take reasonable steps” to ensure that donations over $50 are not from overseas persons and that political party secretaries be resident in New Zealand. The Green Party, which campaigned on a ban on foreign political donors, welcomed the move.

Only New Zealand citizens will be allowed to make donations to political parties under policy changes to ban foreign donations higher than $50. A new law to implement the change was to be rushed through Parliament yesterday afternoon under urgency. Justice Minister Andrew Little announced the change as necessary to “protect New Zealand from foreign interference in our elections”. Also banned will be anonymous online political advertising. All such adverts will require a name and address in future. The government is using parliamentary urgency to pass the bill in time to be effective in election year, a spokesperson said. The justice select committee has held hearings on the issue already but has yet to report back all its findings to Parliament. Little indicated there are further crackdowns to come, aimed at preventing foreign interference such as the disguised Russian online campaigns ahead of the 2016 US presidential election
that are credited with boosting support for the Republican Party candidate at the time, now president, Donald Trump. The move also reflects a growing body of evidence that foreign donors, particularly Chinese nationals, have become major donors to New Zealand political parties in recent years. The most recent disclosures involved a $150,000 donation to the National Party in May 2017 which was made through a New Zealand-registered company owned by a Chinese donor with horse racing industry links. Known as Mr Wolf Lang Nin’s Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry NZ company made the six-figure donation after he first met then Trade Minister Todd McClay in Beijing in July 2016 during a G-20 meeting. “The risk of foreign interference in elections is a growing international phenomenon and can take many forms, including donations,” said Little. “New Zealand is not immune from this risk.” The sudden move also follows announcements a fortnight ago restricting foreign ownership of

■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ To make pastry, sift flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl or food processor. Make a well in the centre and gradually add butter and egg yolk. Mix together using a flat-bladed knife or process for about 10 seconds in a food pro-
cessor to form a crumbly mixture. Pour in water and gently mix to form a soft dough. ■■ Form into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. ■■ Roll out pastry on a floured bench. It should cover a long flan tin, preferably one with a removable base. ■■ Using the back of a rolling pin, lift pastry into place and thumb in extra pastry around the sides to form a decorative edge. Roll
out leftover pastry and cut into strips ready to decorate the top of the tart when filled. ■■ To make filling, heat oil in a frying-pan and stir onion over a moderate heat until soft. ■■ Add mince and oregano and cook together for 10–15 minutes until onions are caramelised and beef is crispy in parts. ■■ To fill the pie, layer peppers and beef filling over the pastry, making sure it is evenly distributed. ■■ Whisk together sour cream and egg then pour over the filling. ■■ Top pie with pastry strips layered in a lattice pattern, as shown, and decorate with tomato halves. ■■ Bake for 25–30 minutes or until filling has set and pastry is golden. ■■ Remove from tin and serve with a green herb salad and crusty bread. Centurions just make it
Aussies in serious form for test series
AP Kane Williamson posted his 21st test century and Ross Taylor his 19th in a record partnership which ensured New Zealand drew the second cricket test against England and secured a 1-0 win in the two-match series. New Zealand’s most successful test batting stymied the tourists attack until shortly after lunch yesterday when rain began to fall and washed out the last two sessions. By that stage Williamson, who was 104 not out, and Taylor, 105 not out, likely had already done enough to save the match. Their unbroken 213-run partnership – New Zealand’s best for the third wicket against England – had steered the home team to 241-2, a lead of 140 after it had started its second innings 101 runs behind England. Both reached their centuries in the short passage of play – about 17 minutes – between lunch and the rain. Williamson brought up his from 230 balls in just over five hours and with 11 boundaries. Taylor did so, more spectacularly, with a six off the bowling of England captain Joe Root, from 184 balls, in 274 minutes with 11 fours and two sixes. At 38 he became, in his 96th test, only the second New Zealander after Stephen Fleming (7172) to surpass 7000 runs in tests. “It was a great fighting effort over the last couple of weeks,” Williamson said. “We know what a great unit the England side is and to lose both tosses and show that fight that we demand of ourselves as a unit was really pleasing.” Root must have known at the start of the day that his team’s chances of achieving a win to tie the series was slight at best. New Zealand was already 962, just six runs behind, and the real threat of rain that hung over the day meant time wasn’t on his side. England needed early wickets and a vital break through literally slipped through its hands when Joe Denly dropped Williamson from the bowling of Jofra Archer when the New Zealand captain was 64 and the score was 154, a lead of 53. Williamson ballooned a catch to Denly at short mid-wicket, probably the easiest chance he will ever receive, and the fieldsman had two grabs at the ball before putting it down. As Taylor and Williamson ground on relentlessly through the lunch break and as storm clouds crept up on Seddon Park, Root saw his team’s chances dissolve. “It was a shame about the rain today,” Root said. “It was a shame about losing sessions earlier in the match. We felt if we didn’t lose those the pitch might deteriorate slightly quicker and might have done a little more for us coming into this last day.”
Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s premier batsmen, both registered centuries yesterday, just before the rains came. PHOTO AP Root had done everything in his power to give his team a winning chance. His 226 in England’s only innings, his third double-century in tests and his first as captain, lifted his team, along with Rory Burns’ 101 and Ollie Pope’s 75, to 476 in reply to New Zealand’s 375. With New Zealand 28-2 in its second innings late on the fourth day, Root must have felt some confidence in England’s chances. But Williamson and Taylor stood in his way and proved an impassable roadblock.
England now heads to South Africa for a challenging four-test series. With its performance in Hamilton its confidence will be higher than after its first test defeat which came hard on the heels of is Ashes defeat at home. “I think we’ve learned a lot as a group,” Root said. “We learned about people in these conditions, how they go about different situations, how they react to it and what their characters are. “There’s been a lot of information and we need to take that
forward, carry the lessons we learned here into South Africa.” New Zealand also will take some confidence into its impending three-test series against Australia, though it meets an Australian team in exceptional form after its recent 2-0 series win over Pakistan. The New Zealanders have no warm-up games before their first test against Australia, a day-night match at Perth, starting December 12 and have to overcome the fact that none of its current 15-strong squad has played a test in Perth, Melbourne or Sydney.
It’s clear the Black Caps will be facing an in-form Australian side when the two sides begin a highly anticipated three-test series this month. Tim Paine’s side wrapped up a series win over Pakistan in more convincing fashion on Monday – thrashing the tourists by an innings and 48 runs in Adelaide. They won the first test in Brisbane by an innings and five runs. The New Zealand series begins in Perth on December 12 followed by the Boxing Day test in Melbourne, New Zealand’s return to the traditional fixture for the first time since 1987, and the third test in Sydney. New Zealand have only won one series in Australia, led by Richard Hadlee in 1985-86, and haven’t won a test on Australian soil since 2011 in Hobart. Australia seemed to look vulnerable in the wake of last year’s sandpaper cheating scandal but have gone back to their dominant ways with the return of Steve Smith and David Warner, making easy work of Pakistan over two tests. Australia lost just three wickets in the second test in Adelaide which was won on day four after batting first and declaring on 589 for three. Australia have scored 500-plus in four of the past five tests against the Black Caps. Warner finished with 489 runs across two innings to take his career average against Pakistan to 108.40 in seven tests. His next best average? Against New Zealand he averages 71.27 in 14 innings, including four centuries. Aussie paceman Mitchell Starc took 14 wickets against Pakistan ripping through their middle order. “He destroyed the Pakistan middle order and sent a message to New Zealand ahead of its upcoming tour. This version of Starc is bowling with some serious heat, attacking the stumps and doing all sorts of damage,” Liam Twomey of the Herald Sun said of Starc in his player ratings following the Pakistan series. New Zealand will also take some form into the series having amassed 615 for nine in the first test win over England, while Ross Taylor (290 in Perth) and Kane Williamson (140 in Brisbane) produced remarkable knocks the last time New Zealand was in Australia in 2015, and both notched centuries yesterday. Paine said yesterday he’d been watching the New Zealand series against England and saw a welldrilled side with class players. “I have never played a test against New Zealand,” Paine said. “I have certainly watched them the last few mornings and they look like they are a really disciplined, well-drilled test team. “Both sides are playing well so it is exciting.”

Proctor making his mark
All for a good cause
Chris Boyd’s Northampton Saints continue to underline their early Premiership title credentials as Matt Proctor makes an immediate impression on the English rugby scene. Proctor, the former All Blacks and Hurricanes centre, scored two tries in his first Premiership appearance to help Northampton to a commanding 36-16 win over floundering East Midlands rivals Leicester Tigers at Franklin’s Gardens. Boyd lost internationals Dan Biggar, Courtney Lawes and Owen Franks, who all failed fitness tests prior to kickoff, but blockbusting wing Taqele Naiyaravoro produced a man of the match performance to give Saints their fourth win from five games this season to maintain their league leading position. “We won and got five points, and we played better in more patches than we did badly,” Boyd said. “To get a win for our supporters at home makes it a pretty good day. I’m happy.” Pat Lam’s Bristol Bears sit second in the Premiership after missing a chance to draw level with Saints last weekend. Bristol captain Steven Luatua and Charles Piutau, who scored one of his side’s four second half tries, starred for the Bears but it wasn’t enough to kick clear as Stephen Myler kicked a penalty to snatch a 27-27 draw. Waisake Naholo continued to endear himself in his new rugby home with a 60 metre intercept try for London Irish. Sean Maitland scored the only try of the match as Saracens welcomed back their superstar roster to gain a 25-12 away win over Bath.
The Ashburton Foundation for the Blind were the major benefactors of a big day of croquet at the Waireka Croquet Club at the weekend. Each year the club holds its annual Canstaff Blind Tournament and with big numbers of player stepping to the plate, they were able to raise more than $200 for the foundation. While the day was about raising money for a good cause, it was also about some hot competition on the court. Local Eva Kircher emerged victorious in the Golf Croquet section of the competition, winning with 33 hoops ahead of six other players who tied for second with 32 hoops. They included local players, Sue Lamb, Joyce Davis and Colin Lamb. In the Association Croquet section, Kevin McGlinchey was the winner with 40 points ahead of Annette Blain from Waireka with 37 points while in the junior section, Trish Quinne of Ashbury was the winner with 43 points ahead of Henel Cookie with 34 points.

Time to celebrate rugby excellence New Zealand Rugby has announced the nominations for the 2019 ASB Rugby Awards. Bay of Plenty Steamers midfielder Chase Tiatia proved to be a real game-changer in 2019 and is nominated for the Duane Monkley Medal for top performer in the Mitre 10 Cup. Blessed with speed, footwork and an uncanny ability to slip out of tackles, Tiatia played a crucial role in helping the Steamers secure a Championship win and promotion to the Premiership for 2020. He is up against Gareth Evans (Hawke’s Bay), Salesi Rayasi (Auckland) and Fletcher Smith (Waikato). The world champion Black Ferns Sevens, based in Mount Maunganui, claimed their fifth World Series crown this year. Bay of Plenty’s Kelly Brazier has been nominated for Black Ferns Sevens Player of the Year, up against captain Sarah Hirini (Manawatu) and Tyla Na-

With public voting now closed, the hotly contested Sky Television Fans Try of the Year has been narrowed from a long list of 10 to three. Fans have put Rotorua Boys’ High School player Stuart Leach, Otago Spirit’s Sheree Hume and All Black TJ Perenara in the top three with the fans’ final winner to be revealed at next week’s awards event. The 2019 ASB Rugby Awards have also had a shake-up in the premier categories. The leading All Blacks and Black Ferns will now contest the new All Blacks Player of the Year and the renamed Black Ferns Player of the Year categories. Sarah Hirini is yet again up for a top rugby award. the supreme winner from among all the Player of the Year winners on the night. New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said the rugby
awards was an opportunity to celebrate excellence, perseverance, success and triumph. “It’s also important to acknowledge those volunteers who keep the game alive in the community through their dedication, hard work and tenacity. These are the attitudes that are important to any rugby team. “As the game grows and we see the support and growth of our other teams in black, it has become appropriate to acknowledge them separately for the contributions they make to their specific part of rugby. “The All Blacks continue to be an important global figure for us, and the Black Ferns are driving real growth in the game in New Zealand and overseas. “The globe-trotting Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens teams are now popular figures in every country in which they play during the World Series.” Winners will be announced at the awards on December 12.

Trotters hit top gear
With high winds at their backs, horses competing at yesterday’s trials at the Ashburton Racecourse had good assistance over the closing 400 metres of each heat. Pictured are Mentalist (inside) and Leo O’Reilly with Jack’s Mate and Kerry O’Reilly to their outside. The pair sprinted clear of a big field of qualifying trotters over the concluding stages with the Stephen Williams-trained Jack’s Mate emerging victorious. A son of Superfast Stuart, Jack’s Mate is from Williams’ former good mare, Brylin Paige and looks to have inherited a lot of the family ability.

■■GROUP ONE IN MIND
Trans-Tasman targets for Harlech A Group One victory is top of mind for trainers Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard with talented three-year-old Harlech. The Group Two winner put in a gallant performance last start to finish second behind star galloper Catalyst in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton last month and his connections are keen to get an elite level victory before he heads across the Tasman. Moroney is looking forward to eventually getting Harlech to Australia to not only chase the big money on offer but also boost his profile. “He’ll end up in Aussie, but at this stage he’s going to stay in New Zealand for a while,” Moroney said. “He’s been freshened since Riccarton and will run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day over 1400m then go down to Trentham for the Group One mile. “Being a colt, we’re concentrating on trying to win a Group One with him.” Harlech’s Boxing Day mission is the Listed Shaw’s Wires Ropes Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m) and his Trentham goal on January 11, the Gr. 1 Levin Classic (1600m). “After Trentham he will possibly stay on for the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m),” Moroney said. “He’s nominated for the New Zealand Derby (Gr.1, 2400m), but we’re not sure about that. He will probably be coming over here instead. “It’s most likely he would go up to Sydney, but there is the Australian Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) here in Melbourne. “We’ll work that out when he gets here.” Harlech, a son of Darci Brahma, has won twice, including the Gr.2 James and Annie Sarten Memori-

Group Two winner Harlech with Vinnie Colgan aboard. ished second in the Gr.2 Waikato Guineas (2000m), fourth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby and second in the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) before a last-start ninth in the Gr.1 ATC Derby (2400m), after which he was sold to Hong Kong and is now in the stable of Caspar Fownes. “This year we left a filly for a change and she (Targhee) ran
al Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa, and been placed three times from six starts. “Each year we’ve been picking out a nice colt to leave in New Zealand to race early on,” Moroney said. “The first year it was Arrogant and then last year it was Harlech. “So far we’ve got it right.” Arrogant was a winner who fin-
fourth at Ellerslie on Saturday,” Moroney said. Moroney is also eyeing a New Zealand Group One tilt with Melbourne Cup runner Sound. He has earmarked the Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 7 for the seven-year-old, with his leadups in Australia. He is set to follow the same path
as Vengeur Masque, who ran fifth in this year’s edition of the Auckland Cup prior to finishing runner-up in the Sydney Cup (3200m). “He will be going over for the Auckland Cup, all going well,” Moroney said. “I’ll follow the same path we did with Vengeur Masque by running him in the Listed 2500m race (Torney Cup) at Moonee Valley three weeks before the Auckland Cup. “Vengeur Masque won it before he went over. “He has been freshened since the Sandown Cup and he’s back into work at the end of this week.” Moroney said he has fought hoof problems with Sound, but rates him a “fair dinkum” stayer. “His run in the Sandown Cup was fair,” he said. “It was just too tough with 60kg. He’s not a big horse. “He was luckless in the Tancred Stakes (Gr.1, 2400m). He should have run second. It was rider error on the day and in the Sydney Cup (Gr.1, 3200m) he was caught wide and ended up leading. “He was still there at the top of the rise then weakened. “Though he hasn’t won a race here in Australia, he has won more than $A380,000 in prizemoney.” Moroney doesn’t plan to transfer any other horses to his Matamata stable, though he has already sent over Born To Fight, a five-year-old son of Street Boss who had two wins and three placings in Australia and holds a nomination for the Dunstan Feeds 1500m Championship at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Born To Fight made his New Zealand debut at Waverley last month and finished an unlucky fourth in a Rating 72 1200m after being hampered mid-race. “He looks better suited in New Zealand,” Moroney said.

There was action aplenty at the Ashburton Speedway Christmas Champs on Sunday.

Champs wrap up fine season By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Close to 90 vehicles spent the best part of their Sunday afternoon burning their way around the Ashburton Speedway as racing action for the calendar year wrapped up with the annual Christmas Champs. Across a host of different events throughout the day, from the traditional events such as stockcars and demolition derbies right through to new events for the Golden Oldies with drivers over 40 years of age, there was something for everyone, with good conditions adding to the day’s action. On the track it was hot with
good strong competition and some excellent results across the board. In the youth ministocks event, which had 24 entries, Campbell McManaway was in consistent form, placing second in the first two races of the three race series and then fourth in the final race which saw him score 58 points, enough to see him crowned the winner. Cruiz McCreath was second while Ben Smart claimed third. In the stockcars event, Shane Steer was in dominant form, winning the first race of the day and then finishing second in race two. Logan Booth was hot on his tail however with a fourth and then a
victory, but when Steer took out the third race, he did enough to get his nose on top of the points ladder. Noel Inns ended up second with three consistent runs while Booth had to settle for third. Some of the group also competed in the Golden Oldies race, which also went the way of Steer, ahead of Inns with Rodney Burt third. Saloons action saw visiting Dunedin driver, Scott Helm come out on top with a win, a second and a third for the day ahead of Brian Maxwell and Craig Laby. Helm was one of two drivers to journey up from Dunedin and experience the Ashburton
Speedway for the first time. In C Grade racing, Shane Newton proved untouchable and delivered the most commanding performance of the day, winning all three races ahead of Rob Sullivan who finished second to him in each race with Wayne Sullivan claiming third. The streetstocks section saw two withdrawals from the initial entries and then a number of did not finishes across the programme. Buddy Finch won the first two races and then didn’t finish the third but had done enough to secure the title from Tyrone Neil and Mathew Maddock. In the adult ministocks, Grey-
mouth’s Sarah Bellis was too good for her rivals emerging on top of a field of 14 courtesy of two wins and a second from her three races. Craig Butterick who won the final race of the day, claimed second while Emma Burnip was third home. The production saloons event went to Allan Kirk, who finished just one point clear of David Filius with Matt Quinn in third, while the sidechairs event went to Justin Turner ahead of James Wood. Speedway takes a break locally now until March next year when they will host South Island Super Sunday.
Road racing season about to roar into gear Summer is here, Christmas is coming and the nation’s best motorcycle road race tracks are beckoning. It is just a few days now until the 2019 edition of the always-popular Suzuki International Series begins. The 12th annual three-round series kicks off this coming weekend and it is again swamped with potent, world-class entries right through all the various categories.
Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park hosts the opening round this Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8, setting into motion three consecutive weekends of blistering motorbike action, the series again proving to be somewhat of a magnet for international stars. Manfeild, on the outskirts of Feilding, follows as the host venue the following week, December 14-15, and the action wraps up, as
it traditionally does, on the streets of Wanganui as riders tear around the world-famous Cemetery Circuit, on Boxing Day. While it is true that Taupo’s Scott Moir has fingers crossed he can make it three wins in a row in the premier Formula One Superbikes class, there are so many talented individuals lining up again this year that picking a winner is almost impossible. In addition to the Suzuki ace
Moir’s traditional New Zealand rivals in the class, there are also several overseas visitors who could shatter Moir’s dreams of a threepeat. Kiwi standouts include Glen Eden’s current national superbike champion Daniel Mettam, Wellington’s two-time former champion Sloan Frost, the immensely-talented Whakatane brothers Mitch and Damon Rees, Christchurch’s ever-consistent
Al Hoogenboezem, and Wainuiomata’s Shane Richardson, who has just returned from a successful racing season in the United Kingdom. In addition, top riders are arriving from the United Kingdom, France and Australia, with Isle of Man and British Superbike Championship winners among them. British rider Richard Cooper and Ireland’s Lee Johnston are just a couple of the top class international headliners.

PUBLIC NOTICES
Top coaching appointment Successful Te Wananga o Raukawa Pulse mentor Yvette McCausland-Durie has added another feather to her cap following her appointment as coach of the NZ U21 netball team. Experience has played a prominent role in McCausland-Durie’s latest anointment after fashioning an impressive record in recent seasons when guiding the Pulse to three successive ANZ Premiership Grand Finals and winning an elusive maiden title with the club this year. With 10 years of high performance coaching under her belt, McCausland-Durie will take the NZ U21 team through to the next Netball World Youth Cup in Fiji in 2021. Assistant coach of the national U21 side which won gold at the 2005 World Youth Cup, McCausland-Durie stepped up to the head role in 2009 when New Zealand won silver and is now preparing for another tilt with plenty of productive mileage under her belt. I look back at when I was there previously, and what I know now, compared to what I knew then, I feel a whole lot more confident around what it’s going to take to truly prepare a team for what’s in front of them,’’ she said. That has come from experience through those earlier campaigns, ANZ Premiership
Yvette McCausland-Durie preparation experience and time in the Silver Ferns (assistant coach) environment has all added huge value.’’ McCausland-Durie was recently named ANZ Premiership Coach of the Year. With seven players currently in the ANZ Premiership eligible for selection in the NZ U21s, there is plenty of cause for optimism while the in-coming coach also praised the introduction of the Beko Netball League four years ago.

In past years our transition of U21 players to Silver Ferns has been depleting to where we were getting less and less making the transition, so this is a really good opportunity to push that a whole lot further in this next campaign.’’ After winning back-to-back World Youth Cup titles (2013 and 2017) for the first time in their history, New Zealand has built a very strong record internationally at the youth level, with Netball Central’s Director of High Performance Waimarama Taumaunu endorsing McCausland-Durie’s credentials to continue the trend. I’m delighted for her,’’ Taumaunu said. “She’s worked incredibly hard in the last three or four years, both on herself and with the Pulse. “This is great recognition of the work she puts in across our Zone in terms of talent development. A substantial number of age-group and under-21 squad members are from our Zone and that’s a great tribute, alongside others, but particularly to the work that Yvette has done. She has incredible attention to detail and work ethic and I think it’s a great appointment.’’

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Minimalism is a concept that can be taken to any area of your life. Today it could be very effectively applied to communication. Say little, and listen with a filter that tunes out the noise to hear the message. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Though the work that must be done is less than exciting, you’ll find the inspiration to strongly motivate you. It will be given to you, dropped into your path or shown right outside your window. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): These days, if a person clicks and nothing happens, he or she moves on. People don’t want to wait and have been trained away from it. There’s something to gain from being more persistent. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Make a plan, but don’t then use it like a GPS navigation system where you only turn where it tells you. Instead, use it as you would a paper map – to orient yourself as you journey. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Anthropologists use the term “fight or flight” in describing a primitive human response, though freezing is just as prevalent an option. Recognising a fear response will help you solve a problem. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Even if emotional events only happen inside you, they are happening. An unresolved state of being is like a storm, unpredictable and potentially destructive. It is your duty to tend to your feelings. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): It feels like your soul lives in your body. Also, it feels like your soul lives in your soul. You are like an infinite Russian doll with so much outside and inside that you want to connect beyond one shell. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Some events cannot be processed rationally, as they were not rational to begin with. Have faith that it is possible to reverse emotional trauma through the altering of related reactions and perceptions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Wherever you go, you take your 100 trillion cells, not to mention that mysterious energetic field of yours. So don’t try and live by the creed of “leave no trace.” It won’t work. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You won’t be able to predict how much an interaction means to another person. Even that person will process it differently at different times. In the moment, it has one value – next week, another. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Loving another person comes with responsibilities like believing, acknowledging and honouring that person. Without evidence the jobs have been fulfilled, the love itself would come into question. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It’s hard to tell whether an emotion is occurring outside or inside yourself, as it seems to be both permeating and radiating. Either way, this is a message telling you to listen up!

Cantabs take out the TriStar By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Dunedin was a happy hunting ground for a group of local petanque players on the weekend as they combined with some Christchurch counterparts to win the annual TriStar tournament. Played for each year between
sides from Wellington, Canterbury and the Southern region, the tournament sees teams of six travel to compete each year with the hosting region eligible to enter two teams into the tournament. The Canterbury side for the 2019 edition had a very distinc-
tive Ashburton look to it with Richard Browne, Jan Guilford, Karen Bensdorp and Neville Bensdorp all part of the seven-strong group. Neville Bensdorp was initially set to be the side’s tournament manager, but a ruling which allowed for substitutions saw him
become part of the team as well. After two full days of play it was the Canterbury side who emerged victorious with a comfortable buffer over their closest rivals, Southern Blue who finished second with Wellington back in third. The tournament starts on the
first day with the triples and come the close of the first day’s play, Canterbury had their noses in front and refused to look back – going on to win by five points. Playing doubles on the Sunday they managed to assert their dominance. and wrap up the trophy.
