Another i-SITE out of business By Sue Newman

Urquhart and his team were told the Ashburton District Council would be cutting the organisation’s budget from $381,000 a year to $195,000 and that they would have to find ways to work with a slimmer operational model from July 1. And that put the Methven i-SITE’s two full timers and five part-timers’ jobs on the line. Deciding to close the centre was a very difficult decision, Uquhart said, but visitor numbers had been declining in the months prior to Covid-19 and closing New Zealand’s borders was the final blow that added to the need for change. “These are extraordinary and unprecedented times, and we need to play our part in future-proofing our local industry,” he said.

Methven’s i-SITE has become the latest victim of a crashed tourism market, with the centre closing and seven people out of jobs. Those employees, however, are under a media ban, with official comment allowed only from the Ashburton District Council or Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC). The Methven i-SITE’s closure follows the demise of the Ashburton centre two years ago and the district’s tourism promotion will now be delivered through a pared back model as Experience Mid Canterbury responds to the impact of Covid-19. Earlier this year EMC chairman James

There was still a need for an information service in Methven for both visitors and residents alike. And ways to find a solution to that need were under consideration, Uquhart said. “Our staff have been the backbone of tourism in our region. They all possess amazing local knowledge and information and as a board we’ll be very sad to see our team leave. Our priority right now is to support our staff during this difficult time but we’ll be working with the council to see what other opportunities there may be in the future.”

Op-shops get back into gear Another i-SITE to close

By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

When the country moved back to Alert Level 2 it meant many businesses were once again able to open their doors, but it also meant op-shops were able to reopen and support the charities they operate for. For the St John Op-Shop on Tancred Street, getting their doors open once again on May 14 meant ensuring funds were flowing in to St John post-lockdown. “A lot of people don’t seem to realise that the Government does not fully fund ambulances,” store manager Tracey Mewes said. With the country still at Alert Level 2, it has meant some changes to the way the store operates. “Normally we would just take things in through the front door but now every item has to be placed at the back door through the garage and can’t be touched for 72 hours,” she said. “We are asking people to ring ahead before they bring a whole bunch of stuff in for that reason as we can’t help unload it. “Once the 72 hours has passed we can bring it in and we have all the PPE gear there for the staff.” Mewes said while they had been expecting a post-lockdown rush of people donating items they had decided to clear out during lockdown, the retail as-

pect had been busy with plenty of customers coming in through the doors. “I see on the news up north that the Salvation Army had a whole bunch of stuff dumped at the front doors, which you don’t want, but it would be nice to get a few more items donated,” she said. Mewes said with many people now ridding themselves of unwanted items on places like Facebook marketplace, it was taking a dent out of items donated

to op-shops. “A lot of our donations come from older people in the community who maybe don’t have access to social media,” she said. Mewes said she spends a lot of time monitoring social media to see if there are any items being given away that could be suitable for the shop. “A lot of the time I am fighting to get stuff, for a lot of people their first thought is to donate items to the Salvation Army,” she said. The shop has around 30 volun-

teer staff members who work in the shop throughout the week, ranging from 17-year-olds to people in their 80s. Mewes said with them being volunteer workers, she works the roster to what hours people are available to do, with many having fixed days, enjoying the social aspect of the work. “I really want to thank the community for all their support they give the shop through their donations, and purchasing of items,” she said.

Lack of care leads to disqualification A woman has been disqualified from owning companion animals for five years and will be required to pay costs and fees associated with her offending after her dog had to be euthanised due to a lack of care. The woman, who was granted final name suppression, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze for sentencing in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday on one charge of failing to ensure an animal’s needs are met and failure to provide treatment for an animal. The dog was also given name suppression as that would potentially allow for the woman

to be identified. She was convicted and discharged, disqualified from owning companion animals for five years and ordered to pay the SPCA $200 in solicitor’s costs and $83.10 for treatment fees. The court had heard previously that an SPCA inspector visited the woman’s property on February 22 after receiving a complaint about the condition of the dog. The dog was not bearing any weight on one of his front legs, and the inspector could see that he had suffered a de-gloving injury, had matted fur and a strong odour coming from him.

The inspector seized the dog, and took him to a vet where it was revealed the de-gloving injury extended from the knee to the foot, and had dried out and was red and sore to touch, indicated it would have occurred around two to three weeks ago. The court had heard that the vet had said the dog had the worst matting of fur and infestation of fleas that she had seen, and that the fleas would be causing intense irritation to the skin. He was also found to be suffering from severe dental disease that in the vet’s opinion had likely been developing for a number

of months which had resulted in rotting of his teeth and pus forming that would have made it painful for him to eat, especially hard food. The woman’s lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said she was aware the dog required treatment, but not to the extent that was discovered by the inspector, and that she had not had the funds for the dog to be taken to a vet. Judge Maze acknowledged it had been a difficult experience for the woman losing the dog, and that she had complied all the way through the SPCA’s investigation.

From P1 While i-SITE staff were banned from talking to the media, Methven Travel owner David Dynes who runs his business next door to the i-SITE in the Methven Heritage Centre, said the closure was an absolute blow for Methven. “It’s very disappointing because they’ve got some really good talent in there. I can understand where the council is coming from but if we want the tourist dollars to be spent in this district we need to be in front of them. Slimming down EMC is a huge mistake,” he said. Ashburton was cutting its tourism promotion at the same time as neighbour Timaru District Council was taking the opposite approach, pumping in money and working to save jobs in the sector. And that could come at the Ashburton District’s expense, Dynes said. “I’m a big supporter of EMC. They’re being forced to deliver what the council decides and it seems the council doesn’t want to do anything in the tourism spot. Our councillors need to step up.” With the i-SITE closing and the Mt Hutt office not opening in the Heritage Centre this winter, Dynes is looking at relocating his own business elsewhere, possibly to his home. “The rent’s not cheap in there and I’m questioning whether we really need an office.” As part of its drive to deliver a service on its smaller budget, EMZ will partner with ChristchurchNZ (CHCHNZ). This has the benefit of a shared marketing spend and the ability to capitalise on multi-district campaigns. To ensure continuity of relationships and market knowledge, it is envisaged that an EMC employee will join that team to focus on the district’s tourism. One of the drivers in cutting EMC’s budget was to help cap this year’s rate rise at 2.5 per cent.

New plans for Mill House cafe By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Final strengthening work and internal refurbishments kick off this week at the historic Ashford Village’s Mill House. At the same time, Nosh Café, located at the site has closed, after eight years of operation, and the village is looking for a new café operator. Ashford Handicrafts director David Lester said all of the village’s retailers clustered around Mill House, had re-opened post lockdown and appreciated the enthusiastic local support they had received. The Ashford family bought Mill House in 1970 and opened a craft shop there in 1981 and a cafe in 1986. Stage one of renovations last year saw installation of a new roof and reinstatement of chimneys which were removed following the Canterbury earthquakes. “Today we are thrilled to be able to complete this strengthening and renovation that will hopefully see this local landmark through the next 100 years,” Lester said. While the work was underway, the Ashford Craft Shop would be temporarily located across the Ashford Village car park beside Vivo Hair. The village café would be temporarily closed.

The final stages of strengthening work and internal refurbishments at the historic Mill House began this week. PHOTO SUPPLIED “After eight years of dedicated service, Nosh Café has closed in the village and a new café operator is currently being sought for this popular location,” Lester said. The Mill House would reopen early August with the

newly refurbished Ashford Craft Shop and new café, to be called The Village Café. Ashford Village was a popular destination for locals, as well as tourists who come to see Ashford’s world famous spinning wheels.

“In the refurbished Mill House, we plan to showcase more of the building’s history, as well as the history of Ashford Handicrafts, to create a unique destination for local and international visitors alike,” Lester said.

House prices holding – for now By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Covid-19 might have put New Zealand in lockdown, but it appears to have had little impact on house prices. The latest data from QV puts Ashburton’s average selling price in May at $374,168, up 4.2 per cent over the past year, and up 2.1 per cent over the past three months. The growth in values over the past three months is one of the strongest in the South Island.

However, QV general manager David Nagel is sounding warnings that, that price growth may not continue, saying property values were showing their first signs of fragility. “A disconnect in expectation is developing between vendors and purchasers amidst declining sales volumes suggesting we are on the brink of a material decline for the first time in nearly 12 years,” he said. May data that provided a three month rolling average did not

illustrate the dramatic impact of Covid-19. Life in Level 2 meant the industry was back trading and over the next month or so the impact of Levels 4 and 3 would start to show in a slowing of growth in values, Nagel said. “Early signs post lockdown were quite positive, with a shortage of quality listings and a number of May transactions appearing to show the market picking up where it left off prior to lockdown. As a result vendors were initially bullish with their price

expectations and agents were reporting multiple bids at auction and tenders as well as an active buyer pool.” There were reports from the industry that listings were down nearly 12 per cent on the same time last year and 19 per cent on early this year and that was helping keep prices up but data was still sketchy on the real impact of the lockdown and it could take a few months before the full impact of the pandemic was reflected in values, he said.

Bungling burglars admit guilt Two men who attempted to rob two Ashburton pharmacies for drugs have admitted their crimes in court. Garry John Webb and Bradley Turner appeared as co-defendants on two charges of burglary for drugs between the value of $500 and $5000. Both pleaded guilty to the two charges. The police summary of facts read to the court said the two men were known to each other and had been flatmates for around two to three weeks prior to the incident. On March 20, at around 6.30am, the two men were driving around Ashburton and formulated a plan to burgle two Ashburton pharmacies for drugs. At around 7am they approached the East Street Pharmacy and Turner attempted to force the front doors open with a tool while Webb acted as a lookout. He repeatedly attempted to force the door open but was alerted by Webb that they were being observed and they fled the area. The attempts to open the door left them misaligned and damaged. At around 7.15am they arrived at Wises Pharmacy and used shopping trolleys they had located as battering rams to smash a large glass window. Once the window was smashed, Webb entered the pharmacy while Turner remained as the lookout. Turner became aware he was being observed, and fled back to their vehicle. Webb went in to the rear of the pharmacy to the drug dispensing area and began filling a bag full of prescription medications and other products. Police arrived and located Webb inside the pharmacy in the drug dispensing area where he was arrested and, when more police arrived and located Turner in the vehicle a short distance from the pharmacy, he was also arrested.

Farm worker sentenced An Irish dairy farm worker who crashed into a tree backwards after falling asleep at the wheel while driving intoxicated has been sentenced in the Ashburton District Court. Sean William Lagan appeared before Judge Maze charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and careless driving, which he entered guilty pleas to. He was driving a Toyota Corolla along Lismore-Mayfield Road at around 2.13am on May 12 when he fell asleep and failed to negotiate a bend. He woke to the vehicle crossing a grass verge then spinning 180 degrees followed by the rear of the vehicle hitting a tree. He was found sitting stunned in the passenger seat. Breath testing was carried out, which gave a result of 586mcg. He told police he had been drinking at a friend’s place and had drunk four to five Lion Browns and remembered pulling on to Lismore-Mayfield Road. The 18-year-old was on an exchange from Ireland, and was not aware that he should not be driving with any alcohol in his system given his age. Judge Maze said it was clear he had made an error in drinking and driving, or drinking at all and that, while work was a likely cause for him falling asleep, his intoxication was a clear contributing factor. On the charge of careless use of motor vehicle he was convicted and discharged, and on the driving with excess breath alcohol was fined $500, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and was disqualified from driving for six months. Two men have entered guilty pleas to one charge of indecent assault in the Ashburton District Court. Aerol John Sanchez and Dionelle Santillan Belza appeared before Judge Maze on Tuesday. The matter was remanded to August 10 for counsel to make submissions and applications and for restorative justice

In brief Crash witnesses sought Ashburton Police investigating the recent fatal crash on Maronan Road are seeking witnesses to the incident. Geoffrey Stoddart, 69, died following the collision involving a Ford tractor and Nissan Navara ute on Tuesday, May 26 2020. Initial indications are that the tractor was travelling east on Maronan Road at about 6pm when the ute crashed into it from behind and veered into a row of trees. Mr Stoddart, who had been driving the ute, died at the scene. “We are seeking witnesses to the collision and events leading up to it,” Sergeant Gordon Narbey said. “We would like to hear from anyone who saw a yellow Ford tractor with an auger bucket on the front and concrete counter-weight on the back in the vicinity of Frasers Road, Lills Road and Maronan Road between 5.30 and 6.10pm on the day of the collision.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Ashburton Police via 105 and quote file no 200527/4538. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

No new Covid cases to be explored. A repeat drunk driver has been given a sentence of supervision for his fourth drink driving charge. Michael Ryan Strawford plead guilty to his fourth charge of drink-driving earlier this year after being charged following being stopped by police on Bridge Street on February 10. His lawyer Jo Lorigan Innes told the court that he was remorseful for his actions and understood he had an issue with alcohol and recognised his need for assistance. She told the court he has a place in a residential treatment facility, and had plenty of supportive family around him. Judge Maze said she hoped the sentence would provide the support Strawford needed to deal with his issues. She sentenced him to 12 months’ supervision, disqualified him from driving for 12 months, after which an alcohol interlock sentence would apply. A man who forged two doctors’ signatures to gain access

to prescription medication he had attempted to import was convicted and discharged. Hamish John Sawers appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday for sentencing on two charges of falsifying prescriptions. He had pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier court appearance, and had carried out restorative justice meetings with the two doctors and had made donations to the organisations that they had selected. Judge Maze said while the repetition was a clear aggravating factor as was a previous, relevant conviction, she said there was no clear evidence he was a recidivist offender and that the entering of a conviction would be a significant penalty. She convicted and discharged him, saying that any community work suggested by police was not required as his debt to the community had been paid. A man who used a fake Facebook profile to supposedly sell an iPhone on a Facebook buysell page has pleaded guilty to

one charge of obtaining by deception. Ayden Noel Hill had created a fake Facebook profile and had listed an iPhone for sale in a Timaru buy-sell page which the victim had agreed to pay $710 for. He transferred the money to Hill, and never received the iPhone in return. He was remanded for sentencing and for a pre-sentence report due to his prior history of dishonesty offending, and reparation for the full amount of the money is sought. A man has been sentenced to supervision and to pay an emotional harm payment of $100 after being sentenced on two charges of intentional damage. Ofisa Tautala Tavete pleaded guilty to two charges of intentional damage against the same person, who he was formerly in a family relationship with. He was sentenced to six months’ supervision, including completing family violence counselling, and to pay an emotional harm payment of $100.

New Zealand notched up 12 days without a new case of Covid-19 yesterday, and there is just one active case. Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield provided an update on the latest figures for Covid-19 in New Zealand yesterday. Confirmed and probable cases remains at 1504, with the total number of confirmed cases still at 1154. The number of recovered cases was unchanged at 1481 with just one active case remaining and no people – NZME in hospital with the virus.

Policemen charged Police have filed charges of manslaughter against three officers over the death of a man in custody. Charges filed yesterday in New Plymouth District Court allege that the officers were grossly negligent in their duty of care to the victim and that this negligence was a causal factor in his death. In a statement, police said the decision to file charges was made after a thorough investigation and consideration of legal advice from the New Plymouth Crown Solicitor and a Queen’s Counsel. The officers have been stood down from their duties and an employment process will follow in due course, the statement said.– RNZ

The de-limbing of the trees along the North Park walkway has Litter-Free Ashburton volunteers smiling. The walkway, on the east side of State Highway 1, had become overgrown with low hanging branches and self-seeded plants, and a lack of visibility from the road was acting as an invite for rubbish dumping.

Litter-Free Ashburton’s Bev Skates said the Ashburton District Council open spaces team have totally transformed the area. “We are thrilled to bits with the work the council is doing to beautify the area. It has made such a difference, the drive into Ashburton looks so much nicer.” Skates commented that a nice light and airy track means more people will be about during the

■■ TALES FROM THE BACKSEAT

A traveller’s tale from a bygone era

W

e need to preface this story by going back in time to the good old days when milk arrived at the gate in bottles delivered by the milkman. The amount of money or number of tokens left out indicted how much milk was required. So, quite a few years ago this young chap from Ashburton took a trip to Australia to visit his sister and brother-in-law, who lived in Sydney. They had a great time but one thing they hadn’t done was visit an RSL Club. a place the young traveller had heard about and in particular, the one-armed bandits – the pokie machines – a bit of a novelty. Anyway, one evening his sister said she and her husband had to go to a meeting the next day and would he mind spending the day on his own. “No, of course not,” said the

Bernard Egan

TALES FROM THE BACK SEAT

young chap. Of course, under his breath he was thinking, would I mind? Here’s my chance, I’ll be off to the RSL Club tomorrow and, sure enough ,next day he was. The club wasn’t all that far away so he walked there, arriving at opening time and immediately started doing two things. Trying some of the Devil’s Aussie brew and putting coins in the one-armed bandit’s slot and pulling the handle. Time flies when you’re having fun and before he knew it three things had happened. It was getting late in the

day, which will in turn discourage household rubbish being dumped as the risk, if being seen, is much greater. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” she said. During the de-limbing process nothing is being wasted. The removed branches are mulched on site, then spread around under the existing trees, providing nutrients and discouraging weed growth.

Eliminating vehicle access to the walkway is something Litter-Free Ashburton Volunteers and some locals would like to see happen at some time, however they’re grateful for the work being done presently. The vegetation clearing was originally planned to be undertaken over the autumn months, but was delayed slightly due to Covid-19 lockdown causing a reshuffle of jobs.

Guardian motoring correspondent, Bernard Egan is well known around these parts. Over the next few weeks, he’s agreed to share with us some of his tales from yesteryear. Some will be his own telling while others will come directly, or indirectly from others. The whole truth of some, can be left for public opinion. Readers are invited to share tales with Bernard by emailing geegeeber@gmail.com evening, despite moderate success he’d used most of his coins and the Devil’s Aussie brew was influencing his judgement, so to speak. He decided he’d chance his luck with his last coins which the pokie machine swallowed up, he pulled the level and out spewed two thousand dollars’ worth of 50 cent coins. Despite the influence of the Aussie brew the young chap made a good decision – to quit while ahead But he also made a not so good decision – he overlooked swapping the coins for notes and simply stuffed them in his pockets and walked the short distance home. It was a safe neighbourhood and everything was fine until he got to the step outside his sister’s gate. At this point the Devil’s Aussie brew showed its influence again

and he tripped over and most of the coins ended up outside the gate. The thought process was further affected and he decided he’d leave the money there and pick it up in the morning after all as his sister kept telling him it was a good neighbourhood. He managed to sneak inside without disturbing anyone and was soon in the land of nod happy he’d achieved his aim of playing the pokies and successfully at that. Early next morning his sister came in quite early and to wake him up saying: “You’ll never believe what’s outside the gate”. Still feeling the effects of the night before, the young chap, with slurred speech, said: “I know what’s out there, about two grand in 50 cents coins”. “No there’s not,” said his sister, “there’s 400 hundred bl##&y bottles of milk!”

A number of Ashburton households could find themselves without a kerbside recycling option if they continue tossing rubbish in their yellow wheelie bins. While the yellow bins were fair game for rubbish during the Covid-19 Level 4 and 3 lockdowns when the Ashburton Resource Park was not recycling material, that’s changed, says Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann. Recycling has resumed at the park with material being trucked to Eco Sort again next week and that means recycling needs to be contamination free, he said. “During lockdown the contamination level of the yellow bins got up to 50 per cent and we expected that but we expected this to drop as we moved through Levels 3 and 2.” And levels did start dropping, getting down to between 15 and 20 per cent two weeks ago, but they’ve suddenly shot up again, McCann said. Prior to lockdown contamination was generally between 5 and 10 per cent and that was acceptable. What was not acceptable was the sudden rise over the past week, up to 40 per cent in some parts of town, he said. Every extra truckload of contaminated recycling that had to be trucked to Kate Valley cost ratepayers in excess of $1000. Getting contamination rates down was not an option and fixing the problem would see the council starting to focus on individual households. Bin audits and the use of cameras on recycling trucks meant bin content could be identified and those bins linked to a street address, McCann said. When a household was identified as having contaminated recycling they would be contacted, and advice provided on what could and could not be put in the yellow bin. If education failed, then the council had two options – remove their recycling service or replace their yellow bin with a clear bin where the contents could be seen, he said. Contamination was spread across most parts of Ashburton, and was highest in the Netherby-Seafield Road area, 50 per cent and Hampstead-Beach Road, 40 per cent. Allenton sat at 30 per cent while Methven, Mt Somers, Mayfield and Hinds were low, at 17.5 per cent. From July 1 the rules around recycling would become even tighter, with fewer plastics accepted. From that date numbers 1, 2, and 5 would need to be classed as rubbish. Ashburton is not alone in having issues with contaminated rubbish, however. The cost of dumping contaminated recycling in Christchurch City is now close to $1 million and in the past week 88 truck-loads were taken to the regional tip.

Bradley in hot water

Police arrest a group of people after curfew in New York. New York City extended an 8pm curfew all week as officials struggled to stanch destruction and growing complaints that the city was reeling out of control night by night.

Celebrity Chase viewers were in uproar on Sunday after Bradley Walsh appeared to poke fun at Anne Hegerty’s weight. The presenter, 59, made the jibe after a question about The Great British Bake Off, by joking that The Governess “would never see the end product” if she took part in the show. Fans took to Twitter to share their outrage and slam Bradley’s “rude” joke during the show, which was a repeat that first aired last year. Seemingly unaffected by the jibe Hegerty said “that is a very fair point”, before continuing with the show. The joke did not go unnoticed by viewers who took to social media to share their outrage.

Protesters defy curfews Protesters in US cities are defying curfews, with some reports that police have trapped thousands of protesters on two bridges connecting the island of Manhattan. The protesters are among thousands of people demonstrating against racial inequality right across the US following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African American man who died at the hands of police. The protesters in the video can be heard chanting “black lives matter”, marching down the street and blocking all traffic. They are surrounded by the

sound of sirens. A woman who filmed a video of the event, an Australian living in the city, did not want to be named. “It’s so heartbreaking, I have so many American friends and colleagues who have spent their entire lives not having the same equal rights as myself or my friends or my family,” she said. She said she had confirmed through posts on social media a police presence at either end of both Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge, the two main bridges linking Manhattan with the mainland, with thou-

sands of protesters trapped on the bridge. “I’m terrified because I can see a world in America where all of those protesters would be shot. And that says something about the government and the police that are here,” the woman said. Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for New York’s 14th congressional district later confirmed the Brooklyn Bridge was being opened up. The woman who filmed the video of protesters in Soho encouraged people to talk about the situation and confront ra-

cial inequality. “It’s very emotional, a very emotional time. I feel although I’m physically in my apartment, mentally my brain is constantly on this and thinking about this.” “I think it’s really tough to sit by and feel like I can’t do much apart from having conversations with people ... I would encourage people to not shy away from the situation, I’ve gone to my flatmates and friends and colleagues and asked ‘what can I do as a privileged white person’, and they say the best thing I can do is just continue to have that conversation.”

Posh profits from no-show Victoria Beckham made almost $1.9 million from the Spice Girls reunion tour. Although the 46-year-old fashion designer didn’t join her bandmates Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Mel B and Mel C when they reunited for a summer tour in 2019, she still profited from the venture through endorsements and merchandising deals. Biden blasts Trump’s ‘narcissism’ in campaign Joe Biden mounted one of his most aggressive attacks against President Donald Trump yesterday, deriding the commander in chief’s disregard of core constitutional values and blistering him for being “more interested in power than in principle”. “He thinks division helps him,” the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said in a speech at Philadelphia’s City Hall. “This narcissism has become more important than the nation’s well-being.” Biden seized on police driving back peaceful protesters near the White House on Monday so Trump could briefly pose with a Bible in front of nearby St. John’s Church. The former vice-president is now emerging from his Delaware home to confront Trump and using in-person appearances to offer direct competition with the president, rather than relying on virtual events that often failed to garner a lot of attention. It was the third consecutive day that Biden made a public appearance and the first time he’s been out of the state since March. His remarks were carried live on the three major cable news networks. He spoke of the “tug of war between the American ideal that we are all created equal and the harsh reality that racism has long torn us apart.” “The honest truth is both elements are part of the American character,” he said.

Death cause revealed Twilight star Gregory Tyree Boyce’s cause of death has been revealed, according to the New York Post. Boyce and his girlfriend Natalie Adepoju died as a result of fentanyl and cocaine intoxication, the Clark County Coroner said. The manner of death was ruled to be an accident. Boyce, 30, and Adepoju, 27, were found dead by their roommate in their Las Vegas condo in May. A police report revealed that the couple had been “deceased for some time” when they were found “beyond help” in their bedroom. The report also revealed that there was a “plate with an unknown white powder substance sitting on the dresser.”

i-SITE closure stems from deeper issues

T

he loss of the Methven i-SITE from the tourism make-up of this district is another massive blow for an industry that’s in dire need of a pick-me-up at the moment. Sure, it’s understandable given the circumstances and a lack of money coming in the doors and from external sources, but it doesn’t make it any easier to understand why that decision was reached – especially considering that there will be a point when its services could be in greater demand than ever in the near future. There’s been no secret that this particular business has been struggling. Visitor numbers through the door, particularly in the warmer months are low and the average spend by those who do venture inside has been minimal at least. This has created huge operational problems for those charged with minding it and yesterday’s decision, which sees the loss of seven jobs, was probably on the wall before Covid-19 rolled along. To blame a nationwide pandemic that has crippled the tourism sector would be the easy way out here. Perhaps, in fact, there should be a little more admission coming from a little higher up because a reduction in funding from the Ashburton District Council to Experience Mid Canterbury over a number of years has played a huge part in it. It surfaced when the Ashburton i-SITE battle began, that funding was being reduced year-on-year for the council-controlled organisation which has limited what they have been able to do and achieve. And so, they reach a crossroads. That magical mark where it comes down to a decision of weighing up whether it’s more important to bring people into the district to enjoy our attractions, or to aid those who have already ventured in. You could suggest that each is as important as the other and have a very valid argument, but in this case it seems that bringing them in and doing what little can be done to inform them is the way forward. Let’s just hope it’s a decision that doesn’t come back to bite us on the posterior.

Exploring our own backyard W

e’re two weeks into Covid-19 Alert Level 2 and, for many of us, weekends are starting to feel distinct from weekdays again. It was lovely to see the sun during Queen’s Birthday weekend, especially for our local dairy farmers making the big move for Moving Day. It is a huge day on the farming calendar and I look back on it fondly from my time as a dairy farmer. We are on track to stamp out coronavirus. We just need to continue the level of vigilance that got us here. We are still in a pandemic, cases continue to grow overseas, and we do still have people coming home. But many aspects of life in New Zealand can and should feel much more normal. Let’s not lose that advantage. We all want to get our economy moving again safely, and we’re making good progress. Last week the Government eased Alert Level 2 restrictions further, allowing gatherings of up to 100

people. This means more people can now attend church services, weddings and funerals, community sport will be able to operate more easily, and some concerts can also resume. It’s good news for business, and for people looking to plan larger gatherings; yet another step in returning to normal as we continue to stamp out the virus. The fact that we’re even in a position to consider an early move to Alert Level 1 shows the success we’ve had together. We can now make choices that many other countries cannot. In fact, the increase in gathering size means we now have

some of the most permissive settings of any of the countries we compare ourselves to, including Australia. No matter how fast we open up the economy though, there will still be tough times ahead for many. Protecting New Zealanders from the economic impact of Covid-19 is the Government’s priority. That’s why we’re investing in jobs and support for businesses to keep Kiwis in work, and we’re investing in training to help people shift jobs if they need to. One way you might be able to help get our economy moving again is by visiting a corner of New Zealand you’ve never been to before. Tourism New Zealand has just launched a new

campaign encouraging Kiwis to go somewhere new. Local tourism and hospitality operators made big sacrifices for us during lockdown. Now is our chance to repay them if we can; with a weekend away that’ll be a welcome adventure for the family, and a lifeline for local businesses. Let’s make the most of the winter weekends ahead and try exploring our own backyard. Jo Luxton is a Labour list MP. Demand for NZ wool face masks A face mask developed by an innovative company using New Zealand wool is in high demand globally. Farmers contracted to Carrfields Primary Wool (CP Wool) are supplying wool from the New Zealand-developed sheep breed astino to air filter producer Lanaco, which uses it as the key ingredient in a vast range of air filtration applications. Lanaco’s protective face masks, which feature its Helix wool air filters, have received a huge surge in demand since the global Covid-19 outbreak. Lanaco chief executive Nick Davenport said the company only started making face masks last year, following significant research and development work, and was now struggling to keep up with global demand for the product. “There is unprecedented demand worldwide for any type of respiratory protection. We are producing our face masks in the greatest volume we can, but we currently can’t keep up with demand and we expect this situation to remain in place for a long time.” Not all face masks are created equal and the wool filter in Lanaco’s product puts it head and shoulders above the rest, Davenport said. “Natural wool fibre has amazing capabilities which synthetics can’t match. Wool is the world’s most positively-charged fibre, which translates to an electrostatic filter which acts as a magnet to capture a whole range of particles in the air. “It’s naturally bacteria-static, so germs don’t remain on it and it naturally absorbs toxins.” As well as a high level of material capture (including viral particles and air pollutants like bushfire smoke), the face

Lanaco’s protective face masks which feature its ‘Helix’ wool air filters have received a huge surge in demand since the global Covid-19 outbreak. PHOTO SUPPLIED masks also have low breathing resistance, which was a very important factor, he said. “Many face masks on the market are difficult to breathe naturally through, so

people aren’t comfortable when wearing them. Our masks are two to three times easier to breathe through than other products, so they are easy to wear.” The face masks only use wool from the New Zealand-developed astino sheep breed, a combination of dohne, finn and cheviot breeds. The astino was bred specifically for Lanaco’s premium woolbased healthcare products. CP Wool chief executive Colin McKenzie said the company’s exclusive partnership with Lanaco was a fantastic example of how the versatility and quality of natural wool can be showcased through innovative product development. “Wool is a highly versatile natural fibre which is being used in more and more applications in both consumer and industrial sectors. With an increasing number of environmentally-aware consumers now actively avoiding synthetic fibres, it’s fantastic to be working with a company like Lanaco which is championing the value and benefits of wool.” Natural wool is sustainable, composta-

ble and naturally resistant to bacteria growth, which makes it ideal for use in healthcare applications such as face masks, McKenzie said. “Wool fibres are naturally equipped to manage moisture levels, which prevents the build-up of bacteria. Wool is also naturally fire resistant and, of course, biodegradable – making it a highly superior, and versatile, product. “Working with Lanaco is just one of several industry partnerships we’ve embarked on, as we forge ahead with our plans to take New Zealand wool to a bigger global consumer base across a wide variety of sectors.” Carrfields Primary Wool is jointly owned by Ashburton-based agribusiness group Carrfields and wool growers’ organisation Primary Wool Co-operative. While Lanaco mainly operates in the business-to-business market, its face masks were now available to consumers via selected pharmacies, healthcare providers and airport duty free stores around the world, Davenport said.

F1 season to start in Austria Formula One will start its delayed season in Austria on 5 July with eight races in Europe over the space of 10 weeks. It will be the first time Austria’s Red Bull Ring has hosted a season-opener. Races will also be held without spectators and with more than one grand prix at the same circuit. The season, which originally envisaged a record 22 races, has been stalled since the March 15 Australian opener was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The first race of the year will now be in Austria on July 5 with a second, designated the Grand Prix of Steiermark (Styria) after the region in which the Red Bullowned circuit at Spielberg is located, a week later. It will be the first time a circuit has hosted two championship races in the same season, the first time a season has started in Austria and also the first time a race has been held behind closed doors. The 10 teams will then travel east to race on a third successive weekend at Budapest’s Hungaroring on July 19 before returning home, all under carefully controlled conditions. Silverstone, which hosted the first F1 world championship race in 1950, is scheduled for the British Grand Prix on August 2 followed by the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix on August 9. A two-week quarantine is due to come into force in Britain for most arrivals in the country from June 8 but Formula One is set to be part of an exemption for elite sports events. Barcelona’s Circuit de Cata-

Lewis Hamilton wins the 2019 British F1 grand prix at Silverstone. lunya will then host the Spanish Grand Prix on August 16 to complete the triple-header before another break and then two more back-to-back races at Spa in Belgium and Italy’s Monza on August 30 and September 6. Formula Two and Formula Three races will also be held over the same weekends. “We are pleased to be able to set out our opening eight race calendar today and look forward to publishing our full calendar in the coming weeks,” said Formula One chairman Chase Carey in a statement. “While we currently expect the season to commence without fans at our races we hope that over the coming months the situation will allow us to welcome them back once it is safe to do,”

he added. Formula One is hoping to host between 15 and 18 races with the season ending in Abu Dhabi in December after also racing in Bahrain. Four races have been cancelled so far – Australia, Monaco, the Netherlands and France – while China, Azerbaijan, Canada and Vietnam are awaiting rescheduling. Races in Singapore, Russia, Japan, the United States, Mexico and Brazil remain uncertain. “The health and safety of all involved will continue to be priority number one, with Formula One and the FIA having a robust and detailed plan to ensure our races maintain the highest level of safety with strict procedures in place,” Formula One said.

Tinwald two-fold Another Tinwald Golf Club member aced one of the club holes at the weekend, making two holes-in-one on consecutive Saturdays. Ton Kittikote (above) completed the shot off the sixth tee for his first ever hole-in-one. It comes after fellow club member Sally Lane holed the 12th the previous weekend at the course. A club spokesperson cheekily contemplated if any members would ace a hole this coming weekend to make it three in a row. PHOTO TINWALD GOLF CLUB

Holden to pull Supercars plug earlier than planned Holden’s commitment to the Supercars championship will formally end at the completion of the 2020 season. The manufacturer has revised its agreement with Triple Eight Race Engineering to provide factory support for the Red Bull Holden Racing Team after the news earlier this year that the brand would be retired by parent company General Motors. While Holden’s contract with Triple Eight originally ran until the end of the 2021 campaign, an agreement has been reached to terminate the contract a year early. It will mean the powerful Red Bull team, which features multiple championship winners Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen, could line up in a different brand of car from 2021 onwards. Holden and Triple Eight joined forces in 2010 and have won six drivers’ titles, four Bathurst 1000 races and eight teams’ championships as a partnership. Triple Eight says it will retain its branding with Red Bull, with the energy drink giant contracted until the end of the 2021 season.

Hope team firing on all cylinders Racing’s resumption post-lockdown could scarcely have gone any better for Woodend trainers Greg and Nina Hope, and they have seven runners gunning for further spoils at Addington this Friday. Last week three of their two-year-olds, Tedesco, Eurokash and Franco Jorik, went under the national age-group record for a 2600 metre stand set by former Dominion Handicap winner Master Lavros. “It’s amazing,” says Greg Hope, “to do it three times in three days”. All three were driven by their son Ben. Firstly he piloted Tedesco to a six-length win at the trials, covering the distance in 3:31.2. Master Lavros’ record was 3:31.5

set at Oamaru in May 2011. “I’d be happy if any of those were half as good as him,” says Hope. Because it was set at a trial Tedesco’s time was not recognised. The son of Muscle Hill will have a chance to show if he is as fleet-footed as the Sydney Roosters fullback he’s named after when he makes his race-day debut in race one at Addington on Friday (1980m mobile). At last Thursday’s Addington meeting stable-mate Eurokash cleared out to a more than five -length win in 3:27.9 to break Master Lavros’ record, then Franco Jorik lowered it the very next night, to 3:25.7. Eurokash was on debut, while Franco Jorik was having his third start after a

fourth and second previously. Eurokash ($35,000) and (Franco Jorik ($22,000) were bought at the yearling sales, while the Hopes bred Tedesco themselves. All three could line up in the lucrative Sires Stakes series, with Franco Jorik and Eurokash also eligible for the Harness Million series. Eurokash is by Love U, who sired the brilliant Monbet for the Hopes, and also Matua Tana who won the feature trot on Friday night. He returns on Friday along with DreamsintheMist (R1), Mick Beth (R5), Spicy Girl Becqui (R5), Baxter (R7), Awapuni (R10), Mossdale Art (R11) and Mossdale Lottee (R12).

Red card subs and golden point Super Rugby Aotearoa will introduce a golden point tiebreaker and several other law changes when it kicks off next week. The five team New Zealand competition will also allow players to be replaced after they’re shown a red card. While the new red card rules will allow a team to replace a player who has been sent off, they won’t be able to do so for 20 minutes. The golden point system will work along the same lines as the National Rugby League’s. If the scores remain level following 80 minutes of play the first team to score during a 10-minute period of extra time will win. New Zealand Rugby’s head of professional rugby Chris Lendrum said the

competition provided an opportunity to trial innovations. “We want this competition to look and feel different,” he said. “Draws can often leave everyone feeling a little empty and after feedback from our coaches and players we have added the golden point rule. “We’ve seen the excitement it can generate in other codes and we think adds a real edge.” If a team loses via golden point, they can still earn bonus points for scoring three or more tries than the opposition in either regular time or extra time. The new-look competition kicks off on Saturday, June 13 when the Highlanders play the Chiefs in Dunedin, with the Blues playing the Hurricanes at Eden Park on Sunday, June 14.

New Zealand Rugby is confident the All Blacks will play more than just tests against Wallabies this year as the sport battles back from the global pandemic. The national body is facing a financial crisis, warning revenue will be down 70 per cent this year, on top of a $7.5 million loss last year. Half its 180-strong workforce are facing job cuts and staff have already have their wages cut, as have players earning over $50,000. There’s glimmer of light with Super Rugby Aotearoa starting next week with the five New Zealand franchises playing a revamped 10-week competition. At the moment games will be at empty stadiums, but crowds could be present for the first weekend of action should the country move to Alert Level 1. Provincial rugby’s Mitre 10 Cup is slated to start in September and the women’s Farah Palmer Cup in August, but there are questions over whether the competition is sustainable for provincial unions financially. At international level, Rugby Australia is in talks with its government about allowing New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina’s teams to enter the country and be based in a “hub” for a condensed Rugby Championship later in the year. New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson told Nine to Noon all options are on the table, including playing Pacific Island teams and the northern hemisphere nations. However, he said nothing is yet con-

firmed and the Australian hub is speculation. “The most likely international scenario we can see at the moment is playing some sort of international rugby in the last quarter of the year. “We are talking to all different parties some – [the] northern hemisphere, our SANZAAR partners for trans-Tasman bubbles or the Pacific – they could be a team.” Further complicating matters is the ongoing speculation South African teams are set to ditch Super Rugby to play in European competitions. A report in South African newspaper Rapport, claimed the Lions, Bulls, Stormers and Sharks could join the PRO14 as early as next year but by 2023 at the latest. Robinson said the SANZAAR partners have a broadcast deal for Super Rugby to 2026, but he wouldn’t rule out South Africa pulling the pin much earlier than that. “There’s a lot of media speculation around all the joint venture (competitions) ... “But what is important is that we go to these meetings and get everything on the table and understand where each of the parties is at and try to work through the challenges.” As for resolving its financial woes private equity partners could provide some relief. “There have been conversations with a range of potential partners. “We have had regular requests from people to meet and talk about different opportunities that might be available, so absolutely [that’s an option].”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There is a symbiosis between the superhero and the supervillain, friend and enemy, predator and prey. You have a healthy respect for the opponent who gives you the chance to be as sharp as you can be. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The science shows that daily cardio can be as effective an anti-depressant as some types of prescriptive medicine. Relatedly, you’ll solve a problem with a lowcost, low-risk, totally natural remedy. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Job descriptions are used to attract the right applicants. The real job is to do what it takes to get a result. Whether a task is technically your job or not may be irrelevant to the big picture of what needs doing. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your quiet confidence comes as a result of the kindness at the bedrock of your character. You’re kind on purpose, on accident, without reason, without warning; you’re kind in theory and in practice. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll revel in your freedom. Being left alone to live as you like without being nagged, judged or subjected to the whims of authority is the perk of adulthood you cherish. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It is safe to assume today’s work will come easily to you. This cosmic offer is only good for the next 24 hours though. What’s coming won’t be harder; it will just be better approached without assumptions. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You become like the people around you and this is why you’re pretty choosy about whom you allow to the inner circle, or, for that matter, any concentric circle of which you are the centre. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You know the sensation you get when you look back on old photos and realise that a lot of your concerns were needless? Be happy now. Cast worry aside. Trust time. It will handle so much for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your cosmic gift of the day is a clear demarcation on the point of diminishing returns. This prevents you from unnecessary work and frees you to focus on what matters most to you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Judges get paid to judge. Why should those who aren’t judges do this for free? You refuse to concern yourself with matters that do not directly concern you. It takes less energy to live and let live. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): The rules and boundaries are not as ambiguous as they would appear. What they are is undiscovered. You can find them by asking, researching or crossing them. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You want what’s best for all. You prefer to use subtle tactics like charm, friendliness and reward to incentivise people toward your aims. In the rare case that doesn’t work, right is might.

Local pennants back in action By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Some healthy competitive spirit among rival golf clubs is set to feed into this weekend’s matchplay event – the first of its kind since lockdown. The first round of the Mid Canterbury pennants event will be held on Sunday featuring all five Mid Canterbury clubs. The event fills the competition void after Aorangi Golf scrapped all pennants events for the year in response to Covid-19. A total of 60 men and 40 women will play at Methven while 60 men will tee off at Tinwald. “It’s good numbers,” event organiser Paddy Bradford said. “It’s the same amount who would’ve played the bigger Aorangi Pennants event.” It was decided during talks between local clubs last week that a smaller pennants alternative would be significant just to “get bums on seats”. Bradford said all local clubs will host a round in the coming weeks. A total of five rounds would be played between this weekend and August. Because finances had been tight for all clubs during Alert Level 4 and 3 periods, club members have been keen to support each other during a challenging period. “We’ve had good camaraderie and good banter between the clubs,” Bradford said. “It’s all played in good spirits.” “You want to win, of course, but you take it in good heart.” There will be no trophy on offer for the event, however Bradford said the winner might be “up for a chocolate fish”. He said the pennants event offered an opportunity for players to socialise with other clubs. “Everyone is on the same page and keen to get straight back into it.” “It’s all about playing in good spirits and having some fun.”

Hope racing team firing on all cylinders
