Locals back calls for air fare refunds By Susan Sandys

Sharon Ketter is stuck with an airline ticket credit that she may never use. The Hinds grandmother is among Kiwis who are disappointed airlines, including Air New Zealand, are issuing credits instead of refunds for flights cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Ketter booked with Air New Zealand to fly Christchurch to Auckland about April 11, returning from Auckland to Christchurch about April 21. She was making the trip in order to meet up with her daughter Lauren Sullivan and baby Arlo who were moving from the city to Ashburton. However, as they prepared for the flights and exciting homecoming, coronavirus hit. They acted quickly and Sullivan was able to change her flight, although had to pay extra, and get here a few days before lockdown. Ketter said she used to often visit Lauren and her husband and son prior to the family moving here, but now that
they were here she did not anticipate wanting to fly domestically in the near future. “I’m never going to use mine now, because she lives in Ashburton,” Ketter said. However, she had another daughter who could use the credit, but Air New Zealand had told her she could not transfer it. “We are not asking for a cash refund, why can’t they just credit it to us and it be there for us to use as we see fit?” Ketter said. Air New Zealand told the Guardian it was currently exploring the capability in its system to enable the customer holding the credit to determine who they could purchase tickets for. “We hope to be able to share an update soon,” the spokesperson said. “We do currently offer a level of flexibility in a small number of circumstances, usually for compassionate reasons,” they added. A Consumer New Zealand survey last
week found 80 per cent of passengers on cancelled Air New Zealand flights have been stuck with credits, leaving the airline sitting on millions of dollars of customers’ money. Fifty-four per cent had paid more than $1000 for their tickets, and the average amount held by the airline per passenger was $2234. The consumer watchdog was calling on the airline to do the right thing and offer refunds to those who wanted them. Most Ashburton Guardian readers on Facebook back the call. About 25 said they wanted refunds, while only about 10 said they were happy with credits. Those content with credits said they wanted to support the airline in these tough times, and were happy as long as they would get to use those credits. Those wanting refunds believed having the money paid back to them was fairer, with some mentioning the hardship they themselves were facing such as having lost a job and being able to do with the cash.

Early days of TV recalled By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton’s Viv Hanson remembers saving for his first television set many years ago. He and wife Ethne bought it at Redmonds in Ashburton on time payment. The 91-year-old is today reminiscing about those days as New Zealand marks 60 years since the introduction of television. For the nation’s first broadcast in 1960, people gathered outside television shops in Auckland to watch it. The three-hour show included a Robin Hood movie and Howard Morrison Quartet performance. In those early years, TV sets were not affordable for many, with the price for a 23-inch being almost equivalent to $5000 today. Today’s prices range upwards of $250. Transmission began in Canterbury in 1961, and colour television was introduced in 1973. Hanson said he would have been about 35 when his family invested in its first television set. Prior to that they would take a walk next door to watch television at their neighbour’s house, particularly enjoying the performances of American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. The couple altogether had six children, who, unlike their par-

He enjoys television just as much today, particularly being a fan of nature programmes. Fellow Ashburton resident Jeanette Tarbotton said when television first came to New Zealand, few people she knew rushed out to buy one. “Amongst my peers it wasn’t

seen as an essential,” she said. It seemed to be those who were up with technology, forward thinking and had teenagers who would take the plunge and buy a TV. Today, aged in her 80s, her earliest memories include hearing the messages of soldiers from World
War Two broadcast on the radio. She headed off from home in Ashburton to go to teachers’ college in Dunedin and then taught at Mayfield. “I don’t think any of the children I taught at Mayfield had television,” Tarbotton said. “I do remember a stock agent’s family, I think they got it and it was a bit of a curiosity.” However, as she and her husband raised their young family while farming at Lagmhor, they got a television and favourite shows included the news, Dad’s Army and Little House on the Prairie. Selling televisions in those early days was Colin Redmond at C J Redmonds Limited in Ashburton. The 96-year-old said he recalled it being a big talking point when TV sets came to his Ashburton furnishing store. Everybody wanted one despite the relatively large outlay. However, reception was a limiting factor. Ashburton was 50 miles away from the main aerial point at Sugarloaf, meaning it was reliant on good atmospheric conditions and lack of cloud to get good reception. “A good nor’wester, you could go home at night and watch your television. If it was rough weather you couldn’t see it, it wasn’t worth looking at,” he said.
Final fix on art gallery and heritage centre By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
A planned $2.5 million spend on Ashburton’s art and heritage centre will finally make it weather-tight and fit for purpose. Since the complex opened in 2015 it has been plagued by ongoing problems with air conditioning units, weather-tightness and temperature issues. And that has involved its owner the Ashburton District Council in a series of expensive and

temporary fix-it jobs. Formal investigations began in April 2017 in an effort to find a final solution to the myriad of problems that had plagued the building since it was completed. A series of investigations and reports ultimately resulted in findings that indicated responsibility for those problems would end up in court. A long list of issues were identified with the make good anticipated to cost well over $2
million. Ratepayers had already paid out $3 million more on the project than the original $6 million the building was budgeted to cost. The cost at that point was $9 million and rising. In November 2018 the council paid out $65,000 for detailed designs on the work needed to finally fix the building’s problems. In its 2019/2020 budget, the council set aside $2.5 million for repair work and that amount has

been carried forward into the next financial year. The money will be loan funded. Repair work is about to begin and council chief executive Hamish Riach said he is confident the project will be completed well within this amount. “Now that the legal issues have been settled we are getting on with the repair work,” he said. the final piece of work, Riach said. “But to be honest we are focused on getting the repairs right rather than driving towards a particular deadline.” Based on the advice the council had received, Riach said he was confident the repairs being undertaken would solve the weather-tightness and temperature issues and the community would then have a building that was fit for purpose.

In brief Snow on the way Remnant southerly showers steadily clear over the South Island today, but cold and wet weather continues tomorrow. The MetService said today will be chilly and crisp in the afternoon, with Ashburton reaching no higher than eight degrees. MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said along with rain, the next weather front brings a push of very cold air. “It’s likely that snowfalls could get down to around 500 metres for the lower, central and eastern South Island,” Makgabutlane said.

Decisions are yet to be made over how much of Ashton Beach, one of the Ashburton District’s prime wilderness areas, should be accessed by motorbikes.
■■ASHTON BEACH
Thirteen days Covid-free
More motorbike options By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
An enhancement project planned for Ashton Beach has become caught up in a debate over allowing motorbikes increased access to the area. The project was intended to protect the area’s bio-diversity values through fencing and an enhancement programme and at the same time provide an area where recreational motorcyclists could ride in safety. A plan was developed but when it was discussed with the community there were questions raised over the limited, flat area provided for motorbikes, with suggestions it did not provide a sufficiently challenging terrain.
In a report to the Ashburton District Council’s Covid-19 response committee, people and capability manager Sarah Mosely said there was another area that would provide greater challenges, but the health and safety of riders had to be paramount and that meant there would still be an area that could not be accessed for safety reasons. Councillor Lynette Lovett was keen to see as much of the area as possible opened up for recreational motorbike use. “It’s been a wilderness area for years and people have been riding it for years. If we fence it, people will simply cut the fences,” she said. She suggested there also needed to be an area that could
be used by experienced riders. Rodger Letham asked why the council was suddenly concerned about motorcyclists having a great time at Ashton Beach. “Do we really need to spend all this money to do this? If something went wrong there, what would our liability be? Are we not jumping at shadows and being over cautious?” he said. The project was prompted by health and safety concerns that the degree of risk was high. The council couldn’t simply plead ignorance over something that posed a health and safety risk, Mosely said. “We need to mitigate the risk. The undulating area that’s available would be in addition to the flat area available but it wouldn’t
be to the level that riders can currently access, because we don’t believe that area is safe. We can’t unlearn it, it’s here. We’ve had experts say it’s unsafe,” she said. The council could put up warning signs but that would only be a small mitigation measure and it wouldn’t be deemed sufficient if a fatality happened, Mosely said. Fencing is likely to cost between $12,000 and $15,000 but that will be a small part of the overall cost of protecting and enhancing the area, she said. Councillors struggled to agree on the best way forward and decided a site visit would answer a lot of their questions and provide a solution.
Water-race charges set to sky-rocket By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The cost of having a water-race flow through your property is likely to hit farmers and lifestyle block owners in the pocket. Currently the minimum charge for a water-race, whether it is used or not, is $86.94; but that’s likely to rise to $600. If a property owner has a race that covers more than 161 metres, then the extra charge per metre, however, will drop, from 54 cents to 16 cents a metre. And those new proposed charges are all about encouraging water-race closures. At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council Covid-19 response committee meeting councillors took a long, hard look at the way the stockwater service is charged
A story about recycling in Thursday’s edition of the Guardian incorrectly informed of changes around recycling. The article stated that from July 1, plastic grades 1, 2, and 5 would need to be classed as rubbish. In fact, plastic grades 1, 2 and 5 will be the only products recycled under the new regime. Ashburton District Council yesterday also confirmed a revised date for the changes which will come into effect on August 1.
– and who should pay and who should not. Currently the council’s rating database shows there are 1383 properties paying a stockwater rate of some type. These range from $86.94 to $6663 annually. The average amount paid is $706. Stockwater races flow through a number of properties in the district’s rural towns, but these are not used because those properties are connected to a community supply. They are not charged a stockwater rate. In terms of future closures clarity was needed around the need to fence stock races because this would be expensive councillor Lynette Lovett said. Mayor Neil Brown had a simple answer.
“If it’s a stride wide and a gumboot deep then it needs to be fenced,” he said. Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie told councillors that only 4 per cent of water in a race was used as stock drinking water, with another 5 per cent taken for domestic use. The remainder was lost to the network. On lifestyle blocks, while race water may not be used by stock it often became part of the property’s landscaping, he said. “My understanding of this is that we’re trying to encourage people to find alternatives to the stockwater network and that the minimum charge becomes the lever to pull to encourage people to start thinking along those lines.” With that in mind, councillor
Rodger Letham said that raising the minimum charge to $600 would make landowners take a serious look at whether or not they needed their stockwater race. “And that’ll aid us in tidying up the water race system as we’ve intended.” The council has a surface water strategy advisory group that is working on water race closures with a range of community and government organisations, including irrigation companies And that process will see ongoing race closures as alternative ways of providing stock water to affected rural properties are identified. Councillors agreed that the minimum charge should rise to $600.
There have been 13 days in a row of no new Covid-19 cases and director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield says New Zealand is the envy of many other countries. There is still one active coronavirus case, Bloomfield said in his daily update yesterday. He did not have any details on the one active case – they would be declared recovered at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms and 48 hours after their symptoms ended. He said it was “satisfying” for New Zealand to be in its current position – which was “better than we might have anticipated” thanks to how well people followed the - NZME lockdown rules.

They were shocked to hear of the Lotto fortune and – although they were not explicitly provided for in the will – were eventually awarded $1.25 million each in December last year. - NZME
Road turns orange It has long been said that eating carrots helps improve your eyesight. But you would be forgiven for thinking you were seeing things if you drove along the Waipahi Highway. Hundreds of carrots lined the highway after a truck lost its load of vegetables. Police said they received a report on Wednesday at about 12.15pm of a truck losing its load on State Highway 1 between Gore and Clinton. “There were a lot of carrots strewn on the road,” a police spokeswoman said. The road was closed for a short time while it was cleaned up, she said. - NZME

hen this series first started Covid-19 was just a blip barely on the horizon, but since then I’ve managed to review a further six fish and chip shops, and with the country seemingly heading towards alert level one, this series is close to nearing an end. This week’s feed once again required a trip across the Ashburton River into Tinwald, to visit the second of the Tinwald fish and chip shops, only a couple of shops down from last week’s stop. This week I ventured into Tinwald Takeaways and was confronted with an old school pricing board, bright green walls and happy service. Apart from a slight mix-up with the number of scoops ordered, which was rectified quickly, I was away back over the bridge in no time. Once the parcels of delight were unwrapped, some perfectly golden chips, fish and a hot dog were revealed. The chips were exceptional and probably the standout point for me, they were golden, crispy but nice and fluffy on the inside as well. They were well seasoned as well, with plenty of salt as were all components of the meal. The fish was on the thin side of things, but was incredibly fresh with a crispy batter that tore apart into perfect flaky sections for dipping into the condiments of choice. The hot dog was not as large as some other offerings, but had a nice batter and good flavour and did not disappoint. Ashburton might be land-locked, but our fried seafood options are yet to disappoint, and I think it is safe to say so far that Ashburton does a bloody good fish and chips.
Ashburton is blessed with a wide range of fish and chip shops to satisfy one of New Zealand’s favourite fast food cravings. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay takes on the unenviable, or enviable task of reviewing them all . . .

When the front lawn becomes the cats’ toilet Alisdair Smart is suffering from the old-age problem of unwanted cats coming on to his property. Not owning any pets themselves, the local cats think their lawn is game to any moggy caught-short during their nocturnal outings. “This is not a new problem, it has been going on for quite a while now, but it’s got worse since we planted a new lawn out the front.” Smart said he doesn’t take umbrage at anybody owning cats, he just wishes they would stay out of his garden and off his new lawn. “I put netting over the grassed area, but that hasn’t helped, they just go on the top of it, or on the lawn beside.” Along with the netting Smart has tried a myriad of other options to keep them at bay. A liberal sprinkling of cayenne pepper was sniffed and then ignored, bottles of water and citrus peels were also treated with equal disdain. “They don’t even bother to bury it. Riverside assault enquiry ongoing By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Police are continuing to make enquiries into an assault that took place by the Ashburton River last month. A teenage girl was assaulted during the day on the Ashburton River Track near to the Ashburton Dog Park off William Street. Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said the inquiry into the incident was ongoing and that they are awaiting test results. “I can reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and there is no evidence to suggest any risk to the wider community at this point,” he said. Police had appealed for anyone who had been using the walkway between 1pm and 4pm on May 18 to contact them. Quested said they have had a good response from the local community, but that they would still like to hear from anyone else that was in the area at that time. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Police on 105 and request Detective Sergeant Colin Welsh, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. The incident was reported to police on May 20 and took place on May 18, and the Guardian understands a scene guard was put in place overnight May 20 and that a scene examination was carried out the morning after.

New suspect identified British police yesterday said that a German man has been identified as a suspect in the case of a 3-year-old British girl who disappeared 13 years ago while on holiday in Portugal. The Metropolitan Police did not name the man, but said he is 43 and was in and around the Praia da Luz resort area on the Algarve coast at the time Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007. The long-running case of McCann, who vanished shortly before her fourth birthday, has intrigued Britain for years. Her parents say Madeleine went missing after they had left her and her twin siblings asleep in their holiday complex while they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant. An investigation by British police has identified more than 600 people as being potentially significant. Officers were tipped off about the German suspect following a 2017 appeal, 10 years after the girl went missing. Police said the suspect, described as white with short, blond hair and a slim build, was linked to a camper van seen in the Algarve in 2007 and was believed to be in the resort area in the days before and after May 3 that year. Christian Hoppe of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office told German public broadcaster ZDF that the suspect, a German citizen, is currently imprisoned in Germany for a sexual crime. At the time of Madeleine’s disappearance he was 30 years old. He spent numerous years in Portugal and has two previous convic-
Reese’s pay raises ire Staff at streaming platform Quibi are furious after Reese Witherspoon was paid $8.65 million to narrate a TV show where her husband works. Witherspoon voices the show Fierce Queens, which gives a feminist slant to nature documentaries by exploring heroic female animals including cheetahs, hyenas and ant queens, telling viewers: “Imagine a world where females call all the shots.” As the series has had poor ratings and is one of the least-watched shows on Quibi, workers are fuming that stars like Reese got paid millions in the midst of staffing cutbacks.

Hoppe said German police aren’t ruling out a sexual motive. They said whoever abducted the girl may have broken into the holiday apartment and then spontaneously committed the kidnapping. The suspect is being investigated on suspicion of murder by prosecutors in the German city of Braunschweig, where he was last registered before moving abroad.
Police from Britain, Germany and Portugal launched a new joint appeal for information in the case. They asked to come forward anyone who had seen two vehicles linked to the suspect – the Volkswagen camper van and a Jaguar. They also sought information on two Portuguese phone numbers, including one believed to have been used by the suspect on the day of Madeleine’s disappearance. The new appeal was issued
because “the information that we have gained in the course of our investigation increasingly leads us to the conviction that the suspect might have committed the crime,” Hoppe said. Hoppe added that German police aren’t ruling out additional victims and also are appealing for information from anyone who believes they may have been sexually attacked by the suspect between 1995 and 2007.

More officers charged in Floyd’s death Prosecutors charged three more police officers yesterday in the death of George Floyd and filed a new, tougher charge against the officer at the centre of the case, delivering a victory to protesters who have filled the streets from coast to coast to fight police brutality and racial injustice. The most serious charge was filed against Derek Chauvin, who was caught on video pressing his knee to Floyd’s neck and now must defend himself against an accusation of second-degree murder. The three other officers at the scene were charged for the first time with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. All four were fired last week. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to four decades in prison. Chauvin was initially

Those charges still stand. The new second-degree murder charge alleges that Chauvin caused Floyd’s death without intent while committing another felony, namely third-degree assault. It carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, compared with a maximum of 25 years for third-degree murder.
The other officers – Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao – face the same maximum penalties for aiding and abetting. All three men were in custody. Chauvin was arrested last week and is still being held. The multiple charges against each officer would offer a jury more options to find them guilty. The charges were sought by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who called
the protests unleashed by the death “dramatic and necessary” and said Floyd “should be here and he is not”. “His life had value, and we will seek justice,” said Ellison, who cautioned that winning convictions would be hard and said that public pressure had no bearing on his decisions. Hundreds of protesters were in New York City’s Washington Square Park when the charges were announced. “It’s not enough,” protester Jonathan Roldan said, insisting all four officers should have been charged from the start. “Right now, we’re still marching because it’s not enough that they got arrested. There needs to be systematic change.” Ben Crump, an attorney for Floyd’s family, called it “a bittersweet moment” and “a significant step forward on the road to justice.”
Apology issued Glee star Lea Michele has publicly apologised after being accused of making a former co-star’s life a “living hell” on set. The actor issued a lengthy threepage statement on Instagram, claiming that while she doesn’t “remember” the specific behaviour she’d been accused of, she had “clearly acted in ways which hurt other people”. “Whether it was my privileged position and perspective that caused me to be perceived as insensitive or inappropriate at times, or whether it was just my immaturity and me being unnecessarily difficult, I apologise for my behaviour,” she wrote.
Love interest a shocker Game of Thrones star Kit Harington was shocked to learn about his character’s original love interest on the show. Harington, 33, played Jon Snow on the popular fantasy series and was romantically linked with Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen, who was his aunt – but the coupling wasn’t what original author George RR Martin wanted, according to the Sun. Martin first came up with the idea of Jon getting together with his sister Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner. A fan told Harington about the original plan for his character’s relationship over a video call. He replied: “They wanted Jon with Sansa? What? No! What? That’s weird!”

HOT HATCH focused on performance
T
he new-generation Ford Focus ST, developed under the leadership of Ford Performance, brings New Zealanders the most advanced, capable Focus ST to date with more power and technology. Based on the new-generation Focus’ C2 platform, the Focus ST is now offered with an automatic transmission for the first time. In addition to expanded Selectable Drive Modes, there’s new technology including Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD), an electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD), and 2.3L turbocharged engine. “The new seven speed auto with paddleshift opens the doors for so many new customers,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand. “Combined with the Fiesta ST for 2020, the Focus ST completes a full suite of Ford Performance hot hatches available in New Zealand. The Focus ST builds on the innovation and tech leadership of the new-generation Focus, which was named
NZ AutoCar’s Car of the Year and AA & Driven’s Overall Car of the Year for 2019. “It delivers a highly capable, exhilarating yet very liveable performance hatch.” The Focus ST is imported from Germany and now on sale in New Zealand with an RRP of $59,4901. The New Focus ST takes the advanced C2 platform of the new Focus, NZ AutoCar’s Car of the Year and AA and Driven’s Overall Car of the Year 2019, as a foundation to offer greater cabin space, cargo capacity as well as dynamic capability based upon a platform that delivers a 20 per cent increase in torsional rigidity over the outgoing model. Immediately apparent, an aggressive stance is achieved with 19-inch machined alloy wheels, fitted with 235/35 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, with suspension that lowers ride height by 10mm over the standard Focus model. The Focus ST’s larger front and rear brake components are clearly visible, standing out with red brake calipers that
clamp larger 330mm front and 302mm rear ventilated discs. A new electronic brake booster improves brake pedal feel, while braking performance was verified using the same demanding test procedures as the Ford GT supercar, and saw almost four-times the fade resistance performance of the previous generation Focus ST in testing. The Focus ST also boasts a honeycomb front grille, with LED adaptive headlight and taillights featuring LED Daytime Running Lights, with unique bumpers incorporating LED fog lamps and sculpted side-skirts producing a muscular look. There’s also exterior colour options chosen to emphasise the Focus ST’s dynamic styling including exclusive Ford Performance Blue and Orange Fury, alongside Frozen White, Magnetic (grey), Race Red, and Agate Black. The attention to detail continues inside the Focus ST. The heated Recaro sports seats are trimmed in leather and suede, with larger bolsters for improved lateral
support during cornering, and feature ST logos, with lumbar support on the driver’s seat. The new all-aluminium 2.3-litre, turbocharged powertrain is the most potent ever offered in a Focus ST. Using advanced turbocharging technology to deliver 206kW5of power at 5500 rpm – an increase of 22kW over the previous Focus ST – and a significant jump in torque, from 360Nm previously to 420Nm, it is also the most free-revving Focus ST engine yet. Engine response is enhanced using a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger. An electronically actuated waste-gate allows closer control of boost pressures for optimised engine performance. In addition, a unique exhaust system that reduces back pressure, bespoke air intake system and optimised intercooler further improve breathing. The new seven-speed paddleshift automatic will complement the rewarding, engaging and sporty 2.3-litre engine’s driving experience.

Subaru with X factor
O
ver the long weekend, the hills and lakes were certainly alive to the sounds of so many people of all ages enjoying what the readily accessible delights our hinterland offers. For example the Mt Sunday carpark was overflowing and the walking track to the trig-station constantly busy, when we visited as part of a back-country drive in Subaru’s latest addition to its Outback range, the 2.5i X. The additional X means this one is ready for even more adventures as it gets the same additional, selectable dual function X-Mode with settings for deep-snow and mud that the latest Forester has. But, of course, with the Outback built to tackle serious off-road tracks anyway, there was absolutely no need to select either of the X-modes for the drive to the gates of Erewhon. So other surroundings were later sought, in the absence of both deep snow or mud, to check out how well the additional driver activated X mode maximised low speed traction. Which it does, depending on conditions, by constantly adjusting the traction available to each wheel. The 215 mm ground clearance and decent approach/departure angles are enough to go off road without having to think too much about it when using the benefits of this technology. Do this and it will get to places (and back from these) that most of us may not be brave enough to repeat! The Outback range continues to be Sub-
aru NZ’s best seller. For those not overly familiar with them, they’re more like a larger (it’s 4.8 metres long) higher-riding, five-seat station wagon. There’s now a four-model range – three in either X, Sport or Premium specification with the four cylinder, 129kW/235Nm, 2.5litre Boxer petrol and seven-step Lineatronic CVT. The fourth is the 3.6R Premium, whose 3.6-litre six cylinder Boxer petrol engine delivers 191kW and 350Nm of torque. Looks-wise this X version mainly distinguishes itself from its siblings with black 18” alloy wheels (dusty as pictured) with sensible 225/60 R18 Bridgestone Dueller tyres, black front grille and mirrors. The collective opinion being that it looks the part with these, its stance, integrated roof rails and body mouldings. Then in keeping with its expected rugged use, the roomy and well appointed cabin has green-stitched, water-repellent seat fabric, which as well being pleasing to sit upon and longer distance comfortable, allows the heaters in the power adjustable front seats to work very quickly. Four larger adults are very comfortably accommodated, and while sitting higher with very good views to the wider world, it’s more car than SUV-like. There’s plenty of features including a large touch-screen with sat-nav, an electronic sunroof, front, rear and lefthand side cameras (great for tight parks) and keyless entry plus the excellent, camera based EyeSight system with its array of driver assist and safety features.
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
These include adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/departure warning and more, most of which remain out of sight and out of mind until needed. Opening the powered tail-gate reveals a 512-litre luggage space (plenty of space for the golf gear Perry!) which expands to over 1800 litres with rear seats folded. The plastic protection strips on luggage space floor however are slippery. There’s is a full size spare below. The proven 2.5-litre Boxer delivers 129kW. It has a suitably flat torque curve peaking at 235Nm at 4000rpm, meaning the performance is reassuringly solid rather than racy, with the smooth and responsive Lineartronic CVT delivering the engines power in a step-less band. At open road 100km/h cruise the engine sits at just 1500 rpm. That reflects in its decently frugal fuel-wise nature, with the claimed overall figure of 7.3L/100km able to be bettered on the likes of a Christchurch trip. Then on all surfaces you get a smooth, big vehicle-like ride, thanks to the long travel, very absorbent suspension which so
efficiently, soaks up bumps, pot holes and corrugations. Add to this the benefits of the combination of the directional steering, the constant all-wheel-drive system together with the grip from the Bridgestone tyres (they’re quiet on rough seal with great in slippery stuff). The result, even without selecting X mode you get excellent all-round, all-conditions handling, especially so on loose shingle where it inspires confidence and stays on-line through corners with the traction /stability systems performing seamlessly.

Sporting superstars all around us I
was lucky enough to be a part of the judging panel for the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards this week and once again I can honestly say we’ve got so much to be proud of as a district from a sports point of view. World and national champions, top ranked players in the country and some outstanding individual achievements highlighted the list of nominations this year and sitting down with an experienced and knowledgeable group of fellow judges, determining winners was no easy feat. When you break it down and look at the landscape of Mid Canterbury – a larger older population – what we manage to achieve in sporting endeavours each and every year is quite remarkable. Sure, we might not produce a consistent stream of All Blacks, Black Caps or Silver Ferns, but we’ve got stars of their own stage in a whole variety of sports away from the major players. Sports like croquet, equestrian, karate and multisport events all feature again this year and it’s testament to the time, dedication and effort put in by these people to succeed. But it’s hard not to feel like the lists should be even longer. Sure, 2020’s edition of the awards have been turned on their head with the decision to not host an actual event and move all the awards online, but that shouldn’t stop sporting codes from getting behind their high achievers and their vast array of coaches, administrators and volunteers to see them recognised as a part of the awards. We’re a little bit hesitant to blow our own trumpets at times and it’s a mould we need to break through and begin to champion a lot more. To everyone who did get nominated this year, congratulations on your achievements and your efforts. It is an honour to sit down each year and pore over the nomination forms and see what a little part of New Zealand that often barely registers with those outside it is capable of achieving. Well done.

Why some are afraid of Covid-19 Alert Level 1 By Kate Hawkesby
M
y concern with Level 1 is so many people are now brow-beaten by
fear. They are so used to having regimented instruction on how to conduct their daily lives and businesses, that they may not be able to transition as fast as we need to. There are still, disturbingly, people who believe we are in some way, shape or form still at risk and that a second wave is just around the corner. They think we still need to stay in Level 2 longer. Most disturbing are the businesses who feel this way. A café owner in Wellington said that serving more people and opening up for more business was desirable but she’d like to see us stay in Level 2 another week. She fears another outbreak. Why would she fear that, when even the Government doesn’t? But she’s not alone. Look at the mix of retail stores at the moment – they are all approaching this thing differently, depending on their attitude. I was in a mall the other day – there was a stark contrast between shops. Some had
you queued outside the door in large gaps, contact tracing books to sign in, and social distancing inside the store. Others were operating as though it was business as usual – no contact tracing, no queues, just come on in and shop normally. I know who’ll be making more money. What’s crazy is that despite both Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and director general of health Ashley Bloomfield stating at the start of Level 2 that retail stores did not need to contact trace, many still do. They’re shooting themselves in the foot, completely unnecessarily. And this is what fear does to people. There are anxious, edgy people everywhere who’re still freaking out about Covid-19, there are cafes strictly sticking to one server and plenty of space between tables, and others who’ve ignored that completely. So come next week, when it’s “business as usual” for real – when it’s back to as much normal as we can get – the shops, the cafes, the restaurants will need to get with the programme and loosen the reins. They will need to stop looking to the Government to tell them
what to do and how to do it and to solve all their problems, to stop waiting for instruction or living in fear of the Covid-19 police – who aren’t coming and aren’t interested. The Black Lives Matter protest marches hammered that one home for us if we were ever in any doubt. Businesses who’ve complained about not being able to function, need to stop being scared, and actually now just function. Throw open your doors, ditch the contact tracing books, chuck out the hand sanitiser and get on with it. We are not in danger, we are not at risk, there is nothing to be scared of, the whole world is opening up again, we have one, singular person left in this country with coronavirus. We have got to see this for what it now is – embrace the fact that it’s over and get on with business. Kate Hawkesby is the host of the Early Edition on Newstalk ZB, Monday to Friday. LETTERS i-SITE closure Closure of the Methven i-SITE has obviously been on the council’s agenda for some time and to now blame it on the ‘pandemic’ seems an easy out. Surely with the push to ‘explore’ locally, the opposite should be the case. But that’s another story. During the Covid-19 Lockdown my daily exercise walk has taken me past the Allens Road Chinese Settlement on numerous occasions and the site of the deteriorating, dilapidated buildings is nothing but a public eyesore. It is beyond belief the council has budgeted funds for the restoration of these buildings which appear were never built for long life. Despite the initial costs what will the ongoing maintenance expenditure be? Level the area – create a green space with a plaque acknowledging the Chinese Community contribution would more than suffice and at a fraction of the costs. Russell Beardsley

The Divided States of America I
don’t watch a lot of news these days; I find it a bit depressing. I’m sure if you take note of each story from 6pm and put each one in a ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ group, I think you’ll find the latter group would house 90 per cent of the stories. If there’s something that catches my ear during the day, like Cindy letting us know what Level 1 looks like, then I’ll make a point of having a squizz. Other than that I’ll give it a wide berth as there’s plenty of great telly, minus the ads, on Netflix and the like to watch. I’m not sure you’d class the Tiger King in that category, but the continuing saga still captivates me in a ‘I can’t help looking at it’ kind of way. This week it took a further twist with this news. A federal judge has granted Carole Baskin control of the zoo formerly owned by Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic from Netflix’s Tiger King. Baskin and Big Cat Rescue will soon have full control over Exotic’s former zoo properties in
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
Oklahoma. The imprisoned star of the docu-series spent a large part of his career harassing Baskin in a brutal rivalry captured on camera. After escalating from video theatrics to threats, Exotic was arrested for two counts of murder-for-hire. Before he went to prison, Baskin sued Exotic for trademark infringement in 2013 after he repurposed and manipulated the Big Cat Rescue logo. Exotic was ordered to pay roughly $1 million. However, that money never fully made it to Baskin or her cats. The amount of foul mouthed, threatening taunts that Joe got away with BEFORE he was arrested blew me away. People who own big cats aren’t shuffling with the full
deck and there is plenty of evidence of that in this watch. The docu-series is an unbelievable watch, if you last the distance, and many don’t, you’ll find yourself saying, “what exactly am I watching here?” The other unbelievable watch coming out of America, that you’d have to be living under Digby’s bridge to miss, is the fallout over George Floyd’s death. I find it hard to find the words to describe how I feel when I look at the implosion around his death. Firstly, the act itself was an inhuman disgrace. Thugs like that do not belong in any police force. The United States should seriously consider a name change to the Divided States. The political and racial divide looks like it’s getting wider, if anything, at the moment. I’m not big on Trump bashing as it’s very hard to know what to believe coming out of America via the news. I think he has done some good things for the economy
over there but in my opinion he handled the Covid-19 pandemic very poorly. It appeared he flip-flopped from, “this is nothing worse than the flu,” to suggesting people inject disinfectant. It appears he isn’t handling the George Floyd fallout much better. While a lot has improved from his days, Martin Luther King jnr must be spinning in his grave over George Floyd’s death and also the looting and riots. I totally agree with the protests going on over in America currently, but the violence and looting that has accompanied the protests is also unacceptable. The Promised Land that MLK spotted from the top of that mountain still looks some way off. Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Trans-Tasman bubble hits turbulence By Grant Bradley NZME
Plans by Australian and New Zealand business groups to create a Wellington-Canberra travel bubble have been described as “curious’’ by the government-sanctioned group that’s been working for weeks on the project. Chambers of commerce on both sides of the Tasman said they will take a detailed proposal to link the capitals to both governments this week. But the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum, which is backed by the two governments, says the new proposal has come out of the blue. “This is a somewhat curious proposal, but it is not in any way linked to the Government-endorsed process,’’ Scott Tasker, co-chair of the Trans-Tasman Safe Border Group and Auckland Airport’s general manager aeronautical commercial said. The 40-strong bilateral group is consists of government health experts and staff from border agencies, airlines and airports. Tasker said it had been working solidly for three weeks to come up with a detailed proposal to put to government for the safe and sustainable re-opening of the border.
This proposal is now in its final stages of development. Canberra Airport has no involvement with the safe border group. Air New Zealand has distanced itself form the proposal from the chambers of commerce. ‘’Air New Zealand is not proposing Tasman operations until such time that the Tasman borders are open, and only with the support of governments on both sides,’’ the airline said. ‘’We appreciate that both businesses and travellers are enthusiastic about operations – and we assure customers that as soon as it is possible to operate, Air New Zealand will be ready to return to the Tasman.’’ Chambers of commerce on both sides of the Tasman say the first flight between Wellington and Canberra would be for a group of politicians, business people and

seen as a market that could help tourism here recover – if border restrictions come off. With both countries doing a good job of controlling the spread of Covid-19, the calls are intensifying for a travel bubble between the two countries. Auckland Business Chamber chief executive Michael Barnett said regular flights between Canberra and Wellington as the first step to prove systems and processes are in place for safe and effective movement of people between the two countries. “We need to help the survival, recovery and sustainability of our vital tourism, export, event and travel sector and instead of talking about bursting the bubble, we have a plan to give consumers and governments confidence that we can bet back to business,” Barnett said.

journalists, followed by a regular service between the two cities. Travellers on either side of the Tasman will be encouraged to register with the respective tracking apps of the two countries. The Australian understands the office of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly and a number of cabinet ministers and government agencies and departments have been consulted about ACCI’s plan. Australia’s Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham told the Australian he was confident the move would work. Air travel between the countries would offer a huge boost to the ailing tourism industry in New Zealand. Australia was New Zealand’s largest source of visitors with 1.5 million arrivals last year and is
Asked about the differing approach between the two groups, he said they wanted the same result. ‘It is accepted that the 40 experts are setting up the critically important protocols and processes required to open the borders but business also appreciates that the sooner this occurs the sooner the important tourism sector and the businesses they feed will begin recovery.’’ Barnett said business organisations had a responsibility to ensure that their voice is heard and that governments on both sides of the ditch appreciate how important it is and how urgent. ‘’The end point for the two groups is the same – a safe environment for the movement of people,’’ he said. “Following the successful implementation of flights between Canberra and Wellington over a number of weeks, and the thorough evaluation of the systems and processes in place, we believe that further destinations around the Australian and New Zealand network could open.’’ Barnett said New Zealand needed to not just say it was open for business but be able to roll out the welcome mat.

A new report looking into the state of the retail sector reveals a grim outlook. Approximately 6700 retail businesses are at risk of closure during the rest of the year, but even more shockingly, 17,100 could shut up shop for good as a result of Covid-19. Of the some 27,000 retail businesses in New Zealand, just 10,000 are understood to be in a stable financial position. New Zealand’s retail sector continues to face severe pressures due to the pandemic, Retail NZ chief executive Greg Harford told the Herald. Throughout March and April, revenue in the sector was down an average of 80 per cent. In May, as the country moved to Alert Level 2, overall sales were down 12.7 per cent compared to the same time last year, the latest Retail Radar report shows. A survey of Retail NZ members found that 24 per cent of businesses either expected to cease trading or were not confident they could continue, and a further 37 per cent said that their survival hung in the balance. The perception that shops were open and trading again and therefore performing well was far from the reality for most operators, Harford said. The realities of the situation could be seen by the number of announced store closures by large retailers over the past month. “Margins are so tight across the sector that many retail businesses will be unable to recover from the lockdown.” The majority of businesses now facing closure were operators that were doing okay prior to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, Harford said.
Greg Harford “Having lost two months’ revenue and moving into an uncertain trading environment, where consumers aren’t spending as much as they were pre-Covid, puts them in a very difficult position.” It was concerning that just 10,000 businesses said they were confident or in a stable financial position, he said. “Retail has been difficult for a long time – margins are extraordinarily low across the sector and it is very challenging at the best of times and you throw Covid into the mix and it becomes next to impossible.” New Zealand’s retail sector took about five years to recover from the Global Financial Crisis in 2007-2008. Covid-19 has had a far greater impact to the sector, and Harford believes it could take a decade for a full recovery. The sector needed more financial support otherwise it would inevitably face mass closures. It desperately needed continued wage subsidies and a rent relief, he said. The wage subsidy extension was not an option for a large number of struggling businesses due to the renewed requirements of a 50 per cent reduction in revenue from 30 per cent. Retail also needed a “healthy dose of fiscal stimulation”, Harford said. “We need to get consumers out
there confidently spending, and whether that comes through tax cuts through helicopter payments or other measures the Government got, we need to have consumers feeling confident enough to get out and support local businesses.” Consumer confidence has fallen by about 50 per cent over the past two months, according to the ANZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Index. There was some improvement in May, though consumer confidence is still down 20 per cent from what it was in February. The reduction in consumer confidence had already started to flow through to store closures within the sector, Harford said. H&J Smith Group has announced it will close some of its South Island stores, this follows similar moves by Bunnings, Smiths City, Michael Hill and The Warehouse, among others. Retailers were now in the phase of “taking steps to try and survive”, Harford said. Job losses Retailer confidence is waning and the outlook for the short term is expected to bring about 16,800 job losses within the sector, the Retail Radar report outlines. As of May, 7500 jobs within retail are expected to be lost. By the medium term, in addition to the 16,800 jobs expected to have been lost in the short, a further 15,500 job losses in retail are expected. If the forecasted 17,100 retail business shut due to Covid-19, then a total of 65,000 retail jobs are expected to be lost. The retail sector had an annual turnover of $97 billion prior to the pandemic and employed 219,000 people. The sector is expected to shed 15 per cent of its jobs over the next 12 months.

The week in sport: A few big talking points
C
arter coup for Blues It was always going to be tough to keep it a secret for long. Alas, it was comical how the leaked screenshot of Blues coach Leon MacDonald confirming the recruitment of Dan Carter to the Blues as injury cover for Stephen Perofeta ping-ponged back and forth among reporters and fans over Twitter, which forced MacDonald’s hand. Regardless of what side of allegiance you are tied to (I’d imagine there will be some jilted Crusaders fans about) this is a huge, timely get for NZ Rugby. Only partly due to the fact that the All Black great has agreed to a generous paycut, but it stokes the hype machine for Super Rugby Aotearoa. Yes, he’s 38 and he was very non-committal as to how much
rugby he will actually see during the rushed Blues press-conference yesterday. However, write Carter off at your own peril. While he won’t be match fit during the initial weeks of the competition, it will be interesting to see where they do eventually slot him. Greatest-ever Warriors performance? It surely must be up there. Trust the Warriors – the perennial Jekyll and Hyde merchants – to stun everyone during the NRL’s third round resumption. An 18-0 shutout of the St George-Illawara Dragons was a remarkable performance, considering all the club has been through over the past two months. It was the first time in the NRL era a team completed more than

40 consecutive sets. However, despite a near-perfect completion rate across 80 minutes, they were still only able to register 18 points. And against a Dragons side badly out of kilter. The nil surely must be the most pleasing aspect for coach Stephen Kearney. The club still remain luckless on the injury front and consistency over the coming weeks – beginning with a challenging match-up with Penrith tonight – will offer the true marker of
where the club is at. Why no final? Super Rugby Aotearoa have confirmed several new innovations over the past week ahead of it’s June 13 kickoff. The introduction of the golden point has been the one which has been a point of contention. Given the drop goal is a play which doesn’t come naturally to us as a rugby nation (unless you’re Mitch Hunt of course) I think it could open some interesting tiebreaker scenarios for teams. But one question I still have around Super Rugby Aotearoa is; Why is there no final? Reports seem to indicate the 10 weeks will run on a points system where the top of the table team is crowned champs. Why can’t the top two qualifiers throw down in a championship
game to cap it all off? I suspect it may have been one game too many following a gruelling series of derbies and an imminent start to the Mitre 10 Cup. To be fair, I can live with this more than the last-minute tweaks to kick-off times. Reports late yesterday indicate that Saturday kickoffs have been switched from 5.05pm to 7.05pm and Sundays from 3.05pm to 3.35pm. The latter seems ridiculous and suggests the broadcasters digging their heels in rather than looking after the punters. From a spectator and product perspective, it could be the difference between families heading along to the footy on a Saturday night or staying in during the cold winter months. It may be a trivial thing, but leaves a sour taste for mine.

Crusaders superstar joins the Blues The former All Blacks coach who had Dan Carter in his team for most of his international career describes him as possibly the greatest first-five the game has ever seen – and expects him to be ready for Super Rugby Aotearoa. Sir Graham Henry has called Carter’s return to playing rugby in New Zealand “marvellous” and said the new Blues signing would be a big drawcard for rugby fans around the country when the competition kicks off next week. The 38-year-old two-time World Cup winner joined the Blues for the first time yesterday and said he is unlikely to take the field straight away. “I have not played for several months so it will be a number of weeks before I am ready to be considered to play, and then only if my form warrants it.” However, Sir Graham told Midday Report that despite his age Carter was still in top form. “He’s been playing at probably a similar level in Japan and he played outstanding rugby, so I don’t think that will be any different here. “He’s maybe the greatest fiveeight that has ever played the game, and that’s a big statement but he is certainly right up there, and I think it is fantastic at the age of 38.” Carter is a free agent after leaving Japanese club Kobe and comes to the Blues as injury cover for Stephen Perofeta, who has a broken foot. The former Crusaders star said during the lockdown he realised how much he missed rugby. “Leon is a good mate and we spoke about me helping out. “For me it is a chance to mentor some young players and give back to New Zealand rugby. “I have not played for several months so it will be a number of weeks before I am ready to be
Champion duo: Dan Carter joins Beuaden Barrett at the Blues. considered to play and then only if my form warrants it.” Blues coach Leon MacDonald messaged the team on Wednesday to tell them Carter was joining the side. “His motive is to give back to NZ Rugby by sharing his experience/ knowledge with us. “Great opportunity to learn from one of the game’s greats,” Macdonald wrote. Carter, a three time world player of the year, left New Zealand rugby after helping guide the All Blacks to a second straight World Cup title in 2015. Since then he’s played in France and Japan.
Carter joins current All Blacks first-five come fullback Beauden Barrett at the Blues, after the latter left the Hurricanes at the end of last season. Barrett is yet to debut for his new team after taking an extended off-season break, before Super Rugby was suspended due to the coronavirus. There’s speculation Barrett could play fullback with Otere Black impressing at first-five before the season was shut down. Carter is likely to be on the bench early on, but if he can reach the levels of performance he has in the past, he could well
push for a starting spot. “For Dan it is not about the money. “He is here as a favour, with a desire to give back to the sport. “We are only a few minutes from his home so it works out for everyone and we are thrilled,” MacDonald said. Carter is set to take a mammoth pay cut when he links up with the Blues. The deal will mean Carter signs as a replacement player, on a minimum-salary contract of $1800 a week – $18,000 for the season if he stays on the roster for the entire 10 weeks of the competition. The dual World Cup winner and three-time world player of the year was reportedly on a contract in excess of $2 million a year in Japan, but late additions to Super Rugby squads stand to earn the $1800 a week salary, meaning the likes of Carter, Nehe Milner-Skudder and Sam Whitelock are playing on a relative pittance compared to what they earned overseas. However, with Super Rugby Aotearoa the first major rugby competition to return worldwide, and wrapping up by the middle of August, there is the opportunity for top New Zealand players to stay fit and playing at a high level, before heading back to big-money overseas competitions, even though the top-tier earning potential may be somewhat diluted because of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Carter is a free agent after finishing his playing commitments with Japanese club Kobe Steelers after the season there was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and he has since returned to Auckland with his family. “I want to thank the club, fans and my team-mates for welcoming me and making the last two seasons some of the most enjoyable rugby I have ever played,”
Carter said in April after leaving the Steelers, amid questions about whether he was set to retire. But test rugby’s all-time top point scorer was in fine touch in Japan during the last three seasons and his motives for potentially joining the Blues are said to be giving back to New Zealand rugby by sharing his knowledge and experience in the swansong of his career, and there still could be more to come on the field too. Speaking to Irish first-five Johnny Sexton recently, Carter suggested players could now push their careers into their 40s. “Using this time off, it’s something you don’t get as a professional rugby player,” Carter said. “Having two or three months, maybe it’s going to be much longer, of not having that constant grind, that contact. “So it is like a mini sabbatical. “I was very fortunate to have a couple through my career, but if it’s used wisely the young players that have been playing heavily for the past four or five seasons, it’s perfect timing. “Then you look at the other side of the spectrum with more experienced players like yourself [Sexton], you don’t get many opportunities like this. “So, if it’s used wisely and you keep training, and as long as your motivation upstairs is still there, I can’t see why you can’t play longer than potentially you thought you might, with having a break like this. “Obviously, there is some pretty exciting rugby around the corner over the next couple of years, so I told Maro [Itoje] that I expect him to still be playing when he’s 38 years old, like myself, and with you having a break like this then you can probably push through to the 40s. “So, I’m looking forward to seeing that.”

Putting the boys through their paces The Mid Canterbury Combined squad have been welcomed back to the paddock, however coaching staff are not easing up on the 30-man squad during the team’s first lot of pre-season trainings. A gruelling bronco test during the side’s second training on Tuesday at Ashburton College highlighted a strong focus on fitness. It was then followed by some backline drills as the side prepare ahead for their tough UC Championship opener away to Nelson College on June 20. PHOTO ADAM BURNS

Watch out for the Firehawks The NRL’s next franchise could be named the Firehawks, according to an Australian report. Brisbane’s Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Inc – one of four reported bids on the table to become the city’s second team – has filed a trademark on the name Brisbane Firehawks this week, according to Fox Sports Australia. Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’Landys last week said expansion is back on the table after weathering the coronavirus storm and signing a new TV deal, and expressed a
desire to have a second Brisbane team running by 2022. “There could be a second Brisbane team in 2022,” he said. “To be honest, with the broadcast deal done, it might expedite our plans with expansion. “We now have financial certainty. “A second Brisbane team will generate even more value for the code in my eyes. “But I want to make this very clear _ we are fully behind the Broncos and Titans and it is important we do not cannibalise those existing clubs in the south-
east Queensland market. “Ensuring the viability of the 16 clubs, and that includes the Broncos and Titans, is my priority. “But in my eyes, expansion is on the agenda and I still think Brisbane needs a second team to dominate Queensland. “The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t ruined the expansion plans at all. “I am very much attracted to another team in Queensland. “There is a need for it.” The report on the application for the Brisbane Firehawks title is expected to be issued by Novem-
ber 30 by IP Australia, the organisation in charge of administering intellectual property (IP) rights and legislation. The Firehawk trademark application covers both class 25 and 41 goods and services, meaning both sporting activities and apparel will be protected by the trademark if approved. A Firehawk is a bird that intentionally spreads bushfires using its beak by grabbing burning sticks from a fire and flying it into a new area to flush out its prey. In their strategic plan, the Easts Tigers – the club behind the trade-
mark bid – states the importance of bidding for the second Brisbane license, even as a joint venture with another Intrust Super Cup club, suggesting that a bid to become the 17th NRL team could be shared with another club from Queensland. The Easts Tigers could not keep their original name because of the obvious clash with Sydney’s Wests Tigers. According to Fox Sports Australia, the other contenders – the Dolphins and the Bombers – are considered to be the frontrunners for Brisbane’s new NRL team.

Positive movement in the racing industry Significant changes within the restrictions around race meetings across the country have resulted in positive outcomes in the past 48 hours. Harness Racing New Zealand announced yesterday through their social media channels that from tonight’s meeting at Addington Raceway, owners were allowed back on

the track to watch their horses race. When racing returned last week and in the week leading into lockdown, owners were not permitted to be on course – so this week’s news will be welcomed by those paying the bills. Leading Mid Canterbury owner, Alan Neumann said it was a great result.
“It’s a bit better than sitting at home and watching them on a screen, that’s for sure,” he said. “We’ve been really lucky though, with great communication from the Robert Dunn stable with videos and updates. “But there’s nothing quite like being back on course.” Neumann doesn’t have any horses en-
gaged this weekend, but is looking forward to his charges returning to the track. Meanwhile, thoroughbred racing is set to return with racing set to kick back into action with Pukekohe set to hold a meeting on June 20. Gallops will return to the South Island the following Saturday with a meeting at Riccarton Park in Christchurch.

Sebastian Vettel is leaving Ferrari, with his next move uncertain.
■■MOTOR RACING
Options open on Vettel Formula One champions Mercedes will not rule out Sebastian Vettel’s chances of driving for them next year because they may need a replacement for Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas. Vettel, a four times world champion with Red Bull, is leaving Ferrari at the end of the season with his next move uncertain. Both Hamilton, 35, and Finnish team-mate Bottas are out of contract at the end of the season, which is due to start in July after being delayed by Covid-19 and could see the Briton equal Michael Schumacher’s record seven championships. Toto Wolff told reporters on a Zoom call that Mercedes would look first at their own contracted drivers but needed to be prepared for anything. “It’s not lip service,” the Austrian said when asked how serious the interest in Vettel really was. “But I think we owe it to a four times world champion not to come out and say straight away ‘no’. “You need to think about it ... we have a fantastic
line-up and I’m very happy with both our pilots and George (Russell at Williams). But you never know. “One of them may decide that he doesn’t want to go racing any more and suddenly you have a vacant spot and this is why I don’t want to come out in June and say ‘no chance, Sebastian is not racing for us’.” Williams last week announced they were considering selling the family-run team and Wolff said Mercedes were looking with interest at that situation and Russell’s future. “Beyond that you need to not discount any driver,” he added. “This is why I said I don’t want to discount Sebastian as a four times world champion because who knows what happens in the next months? “If I would have told you in January that we would not have any racing in the first half of the year nobody would have believed it. “So in that respect we are just keeping our options open.”
Kiwi drivers set up grandstand finish Kiwis Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin have locked out the wins for the penultimate round of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries at Michigan International Speedway. The Red Bull racer won the opening two races, while a strategic error left the door open for McLaughlin to win the final race. Still, van Gisbergen leads the series relatively comfortably with one round left to go. McLaughlin’s overall round victory means that the evening’s winnings will be donated to the defending champion’s chosen charity; Camp Quality. There were a raft of wildcard racers present, including third-generation driver Aaron Seton, Super2 driver Jordan Boys, former full-time driver Michael Caruso, and Kiwi drifter ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett. The starting grid for the 28-lap opener was decided by a pair of 15-lap duel qualifying races; the first headed by the likes of van Gisbergen, McLaughlin, and Lee Holdsworth, with the second led by Anton De Pasquale, Chaz Mostert, and Cameron Waters. When the dust settled it was the familiar sight of van Gisbergen and De Pasquale on the front row, ahead of McLaughlin and an impressive Macauley Jones. Even after a crash, van Gisbergen was still in the hunt and he continued to slowly work his way through the pack one car at a time until joining the lead seven-car gaggle once again with 10 laps to go. Van Gisbergen inserted himself into the equation by making a monster dive in the final lap and was able
to hold onto the car on corner exit, and McLaughlin was unable to steal back the lead (coughing for fuel on the finish line). De Pasquale took third, ahead of Holdsworth. For the reverse-grid race two, Rick Kelly led Jamie Whincup, Caruso, Chris Pither, James Courtney, Jones, and Zane Goddard. With three laps to go, van Gisbergen’s lead rival was Fullwood (Reynolds, McLaughlin, and Le Brocq following closely), but time-certainty robbed the field of a potential grandstand finish. Van Gisbergen won again over Fullwood, McLaughlin, Reynolds, Coulthard, Le Brocq, Kostecki, Mostert, Jones and Alex Davison in 10th. For the extended 45-lap finale van Gisbergen was on pole over McLaughlin, Fullwood, Coulthard, Le Brocq, and Holdsworth. Van Gisbergen and Pye’s two-stop strategy looked to have been a failure, with both drivers having a mammoth mountain to climb in the race to the flag versus the single-stopping pack. And, no safety car would come to aid their cause. It meant McLaughlin was able to cruise home to a clear-cut win over Le Brocq, Boys, Mostert, Hazelwood, Waters, De Pasquale, Jones, Heimgartner, and Kelly in 10th. Points leaders Van Gisbergen ended up 14th. The series returns to Australia for next Wednesday’s finale, which is slated to take place at Mount Panorama and Oran Park.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): It’s not only hurt people who hurt people. It’s kind and loving people, wellmeaning people, people with the best interests of others at heart. Humans are imperfect. Love is an endless act of forgiveness. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Today’s situation is sweet, and there are ever-richer layers to this experience-cake. However, as it goes with desserts, too much of a good thing can be worse than none of it. Pace yourself. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It’s a day of bright ideas. You will energise different areas of your life with vitalising agents such as useful tools, surprisingly efficient methods, beauty, humour and creativity. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You don’t have to do a lot more than just show up ready for anything. In fact, trying to do too much will only detract from all you have to give. Your presence is a gift beyond measure. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): There’s no need to make people recall what they promised to you, respect what you do for them or remember you in general. Instead, get busy making sure that no one has a chance to forget you. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your ambition is not a rejection of who you are right now; it’s part of your wonder. You are a person whose pockets are lined with the seeds of tomorrow. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): People will want to know about you. Though you see the value in keeping mystery alive. If knowledge is power, then you’ll be more powerful as you hold back some of the information. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): In addition to fun, your prospect has love, resources and inspiration to offer you. Would you believe this is only the start of it? There’s much more to be explored here. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): This is your day. You’ll hit the green lights, get in the right grocery store line, find the prime parking space. The little things that go right are signs that big things will go right, too. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your unique qualities are so attractive, and the person who sees this is not only a fan but someone you will love to spoil with the attention only you can give. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There’s no end to a circle. To be included in one can feel wonderfully secure or like entrapment. With circles, you have to break in and break out. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Sometimes it seems that your idealistic imagination is at war with the reality of a situation. Not today, which brings a brilliant blend of the practical and the sublime.

RARING TO GO
The Social Wheeler Series kicks off from Fords Road tomorrow.
By AdamBurns

Local cyclists are set to contend with chilly conditions when they return to the road tomorrow. The first weekend of the Social Wheeler Series is the first opportunity to burn off some post-lockdown energy for local riders within a competitive setting. It has proven to serve as an opportunity for riders to learn about group riding. Between 20-30 riders usually line up each
weekend for the event, with many from the Tinwald Cycling Cup opting for mid-year training hit-outs. The 16km race will begin from Fords Road every Saturday during the winter period. One of the organisers, Bruce Arnst, said there was a restlessness to get back into action. “Those I have spoken to are anxious to get back into it,” he said. “I’d say people are raring to go.”
The event has been running for more than 15 years after it was started by local cycling stalwart Jim Tait. The circuit had rotated around various areas of Ashburton before settling at Fords Road. It is understood there had been a surge of locals upgrading their bikes in the region during and following lockdown. Arnst said he hoped it signalled more getting involved in cycling events. “If they’re keen to get competitive of
course rather than doing it for recreation. “The Social Wheeler Series is very competitive.” Although there were no major changes to the format, organisers were considering how post-race get-togethers would operate. “Once we’re at Level 1 we should be OK,” Arnst said. “It would be good if the bunch stay more than 1 metre apart as they finish just to make it easier for us judges,” he laughed. The race begins at 1.30pm tomorrow.
