Fire requires massive input to tame By Katie todd
Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz
It took around 20 fire trucks, 50 firefighters, three hospitalisations and endless hours of gruelling work. But what will be remembered as one of the biggest fires in recent Mid Canterbury history will also go down as a moment of immense pride in the district’s hardworking volunteer firefighters, who battled excessive heat and scarce water supplies to tame Monday night’s SealesWinslow factory fire. The first fire volunteers from Ashburton arrived at the blazing seed-processing factory at around 7.45pm on Monday evening, after a passing train driver raised the alarm. Among them was Officer Charlie Kelland, who described the blaze as “one of the biggest fires we’ve seen”. What firefighters had originally understood to be a pile of crates on fire had quickly proven to be far more serious and “large-scale” he said, with flames raging inside the majority of the 5000-square metre factory. “We just had to cut the fire off internally and protect the majority of the remaining structure.” Station officer Murray Cairns said firefighters were “right in the thick of it” by the time sup-
port crews began to pour in from around the region. By 9pm, more than four alarms had been issued. Over 50 firefighters with around 20 fire appliances aided in the battle to extinguish the blaze and the majority continued working at the scene for several hours until around midnight. “It was a fully involved structure fire,” said South Canterbury assistant commander Mike Johns. “You could see the smoke from right down the road near Timaru.” Neighbours to the property reported feeling the heat of the blaze more than 500 metres away, and three local firefighters suffered “minor to moderate” burns. All three were taken to Ashburton Hospital, and two remained there overnight. Onlookers also queued down State Highway 1 to watch the blaze, and police worked to control traffic around the scene. Kelland said that water supply was an “initial major issue” for firefighters, who ended up tapping into local farm irrigation ponds to get the blaze under control. “Unfortunately the distance meant that it took some time to get the right level of resourcing, but we saw the rural units working really well with the urban units,” he said. Also an obstacle for firefighters
Huge
was the extreme heat. “It was a hot day – particularly when you’re working internally and wearing breathing apparatus. That can take it out of you pretty quickly,” Kelland said. “Wellbeing was front of mind. We didn’t want to put anyone at risk.” Yesterday, two trucks from Ashburton and Timaru remained at the still-smouldering scene, along with a crew from Christchurch, a fire safety team and a heavy digger. The next laborious task facing crews was to deconstruct and dampen down the structure, before launching an investigation into the cause of the fire. A digger worked into the afternoon to remove heavy iron pieces off the structure and give firefighters access to remaining hotspots, and two fire investigators were on site from around 10am. “I think the investigators will be working most of the day,” said Johns. “It’s just a time thing now. It’s hot and it’s sticky and we’ve just got to make sure everyone stays hydrated.” Kelland said the firefighters had worked hard and done a good job tackling what “could have been much worse”. “I think the guys can all be pretty proud.”

Impact on plant yet to be determined By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
The impact of the SealesWinslow fire beyond the short-term is yet to be determined, with the company still assessing the damage to the plant, along with its future options. However, if it hadn’t been for the efforts of firefighters, it would have been much worse. Megan Clarkin, spokeswoman for Ballance Agri-Nutrients, owners of SealesWinslow since 2013, said as far as she was aware the fire had been largely confined to the packing and storage shed, with no significant damage elsewhere. However, a full assessment of the plant would be done over the next few days, she said. The company sent the 18 staff it employs at the plant home yester-
day, including the two who were on-site at the time the fire was discovered. None of its employees were harmed, Clarkin said, something the company was very grateful for. At this stage it was too early to say what the long-term impact of the fire would be both for the plant, its staff and those farmers who supply grain to it, she said. “It is a busy time of year, and we will be working through our operational options and communicating with our suppliers, customers and retail merchants over the coming days. “Our immediate focus is on the safety of the site and completing an assessment of the full extent of the damage, including the operational capacity alongside our other

He said given the connection it had with the area, the company was keen to preserve its Mid Canterbury legacy. Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury vice chairman David Clark said it was very disappointing to see SealesWinslow have a fire of that size. “They are a very well regarded business in Canterbury, an important user of local grain and manufacturer of stock food,” he said, adding that Federated Farmers wished the company well getting up and running on its Mid Canterbury site again. The tremendous effort of the local fire brigade must also be acknowledged, Clark said, but it was sobering that three men were injured as a result.

he said, so he was very pleased the damage was not as bad as it could have been. “We just need to have a look at how stable some of the buildings are and if the silos have been affected.” Although the plant is out of action for now, as a national company SealesWinslow would have enough stock feed reserves at its North Island sites to ensure farmers’ needs in that area could be met, he said. As for the arable farmers who supplied the Ashburton plant, Brown said most of last season’s grain harvest would have gone offfarm a while ago, and this season’s harvest was still a month or two away, so the company had time to assess its options.
feed mills.” SealesWinslow chief operating officer Chris Brown, who travelled from Tauranga to Ashburton yesterday afternoon to view the damage first-hand, said he couldn’t speak highly enough of the efforts of those who fought the fire. “They did a fantastic job and we’re extremely grateful that they came out and did what they did,” he said, noting that it was a sterling effort by a large number of volunteers on International Volunteers’ Day. Brown said the firefighters managed to save the plant’s main press tower, where stock feed pellets were pressed, which contained the site’s most expensive machinery. Initial reports suggested the whole plant might have gone up,

Tougher water restrictions now in force Ashburton District Council yesterday upgraded water restrictions to Level Two. The restriction means residents connected to a council water scheme can use a hand-held hose, micro-spray or automatic irrigation system on alternate days between 6pm and midnight. The restriction is in place for the Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia, Lake Hood, Chertsey, Fairton, Mt Somers, Mayfield, Hakatere and Hinds water schemes. Residents connected to these schemes can use a hose or irrigation system on even or odd dates of the calendar, depending on their street number or location. Projects and operations manager Viv Eyberg said there is often increased pressure on the district’s water schemes this time of year, and it is important residents adhere to the new restriction to help conserve water. “Council has been monitoring our water supplies particularly
closely these last few days, and we have now started reaching our maximum consented daily takings of 25 million litres per day,” Eyberg said. “This amount of pressure cannot continue, so we’ve had to increase the restriction imposed on Saturday to a Level Two, in hopes that this will help alleviate the heavy water consumption. “Please ensure you are only using a hose and irrigation systems on your allocated days and only in the evening until midnight, not in the middle of the day.” The Level Two restriction does not apply to residents connected to the Dromore, Methven/Springfield or Montalto supplies, as they are already on a permanent hosing ban. The restriction will remain in place until further notice. To check which days you can use a hose or irrigation system, visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz/waterrestrictions

In pursuit of the supermoon BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburtonians made the most of the east coast on Monday night, flocking to the seaside to snatch a glimpse of the rising supermoon. Popular sites to see the larg-
est, brightest moon in around 70 years included Wakanui Beach and Hakatere Reserve near the Rangitata river mouth. The sun set in the south-east shortly before 9pm, and the moon rose over the north-east horizon shortly after 9pm.
The moon was around 50,000km closer to Earth than it was on Sunday night, and appeared 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal. The next supermoon will rise on January 1.

Costly exits Wintec has shelled out $4.036m million in exit packages over an 11-year-period. The significant cost to taxpayers on exit packages comprises a payment of a redundancy and/or a confidential settlement. The $4.036m went towards settling 55 confidential settlements and 166 redundancies. Wintec has previously refused to release the breakdown over settlements by year or per amount, but it works out to an average of $72,727.27 on an exit package per person which occurred between 2005 and September 2016. - NZME

Police are putting out the call for any information following a suspicious blaze on the Ashburton riverbed on Saturday. Police and a team from Ashburton Fire and Emergency descended on the scene near Chalmers Avenue around 9pm, where 400 to 500 square metres of vegetation had been consumed by flames. The fire took almost an hour to dampen down, and was deemed “most likely deliberately lit”. Chief Alan Burgess said there were about three different seats to the fire, and it was obviously suspicious. Constable Peter Van den Dorpe Ashburton Police Station said the incident was a concern. “We’ve had little rain recently and a fire like this could spread, endangering people in the area.” He said anyone with information that could assist with enquiries is encouraged to please contact police, who can be reached on (03) 307 8400.

A sign reading “slumlord clean up this house” in capital letters has been erected by a disgruntled resident on the overgrown lawn of a Titirangi property. The sign has been up for weeks after long-term tenants moved out of the rental which is overgrown, has broken windows and has rubbish strewn about it. A neighbour of the Golf Road property said in the four or five years he had been living on the street he had never seen the property maintained. The same tenants had been living there for years, complaining of locks which didn’t work, holes in walls and no working smoke alarm, he said. “One word, squalor, would describe it.” - NZME

NZTA wants input on road safety Flexible roadside barriers and wider centre lines or median barriers are among suggestions for making State Highway 1 between Ashburton and Rakaia safer. Mid Canterbury people are being invited to have their say on these and more road safety improvements for the highway between Ashburton, Rakaia and Dunsandel. In the 10 years from 2007-2016, 13 people were killed and 49 seriously injured on the stretch of road and the NZ Transport Agency wants to do something about it. Many of the crashes involved drivers running off the road and hitting something hard like a pole or tree. There have also been head-on crashes. Open days in Ashburton this Saturday and in Rakaia the following Thursday will allow people to have their say on the suggestions. Pete Connors, Transport Agency Transport System Manager, said the agency was holding community open sessions to share information on possible safety improvements and to get feedback. “We have some ideas for how we can make this road safer, but we want to share these and hear what the community thinks

An Akaroa man who sold a campervan he had fitted with dangerous gasfittings was fined $500 when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week. Busker Vojtech Zamecnik, who emigrated from the Czech republic four years ago, had pleaded guilty to negligently undertaking gasfitting that was dangerous and in breach of New Zealand’s plumbing and gasfitting regulations. Zamecnik built a camper van that he fitted with gas for cooking and heating water, selling it later for $18,000. The illegal work was discovered when the new owners took it for repairs to an authorised gasfitter. Anyone living or sleeping in the camper would have been exposed to poisonous carbon monoxide gas. The LPG cylinder was also fitted horizontally to the outside of the van, which was dangerous and could lead to gas leaks. Zamecnik’s lawyer Roz Burnside said he had no idea he had to comply with gasfitting regulations when building the camper van in 2014. The van had passed several WOFs without incident. Judge Joanna Maze said the onus was on Zamecnik to know the law regarding the work, but accepted that the campervan was originally for his own use. “But the fact remains that the work undertaken was obviously dangerous. I cannot accept any submission that no one drew it to your attention. We are all deemed to know the law and it is your obligation if you undertook the work to find out what you could and could not do.” Zamecnik was therefore negligent, she said. As well as the $500 fine, the judge or-
dered him to pay $130 court costs and $100 prosecution costs. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board says the increasing popularity of motorhomes and campervan travel has translated into an upsurge in complaints regarding faults and unanticipated pitfalls from consumers. Martin Sawyers, the board’s chief executive said two issues proving problematic, and effectively ending the road for unsuspecting motorhome enthusiasts, have been defective illegal gasfitting work, and the absence of a Certificate of Compliance. “The upswell in motorhome numbers brings with it a problem, especially for those who buy a used campervan or motorhome where gasfitting has already been done. If the fitting has not been done by a licensed professional, it is a problem and it could be a ticking time bomb if the work is defective. “What consumers need to know is that a certifying gasfitter must provide a signed gasfitting certificate where restricted work has been carried out. Consumers should stay safe and ask for a copy of this at the time of purchase or modifications – it is peace of mind that the gasfitting work has been conducted legally.” Gasfitting certificates needed to be kept in a safe place: “It might be needed for insurance purposes or if the motor home is re-sold.” Where there is any concern that work may have been done by someone who is not authorised, or there is a concern about the competency of a tradesperson, consumers should notify The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

Night Market the latest skate park fundraiser BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Kidzmethven is getting closer to its goal of opening a town skate park. Tomorrow it is holding a Night Market at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall. Kidzmethven is fundraising $130,000 for the skate park, to be installed on Ashburton District Council land on the corner of Bank and McMillan Street. A lease has been signed, a resource consent application is being processed, and design plans are under way. It so far has about $30,000, which includes $5000 from the council, $1000 from the Methven Vintage Machinery Club, and about $800 from the Ms Methven organisers. Member Liz McMillan said the Night Market was the latest event for the group as it aims for its target. “Once resource consent and plans are all ticked off, we will be applying for grants
and looking for more fundraising opportunities in the New Year,” she said. Fundraising this year included catering for the Methven Lions Club, selling Fairlie pies, reusable cups and car fresheners. Kidzmethven annual general meeting was held last week and the organisation had a very enthusiastic committee. The Night Market would feature a great range of stalls, food, a cash bar and live music. “We have got stalls from all over including other fundraising groups like Our Lady of the Snows and Methven preschool. It’s great to support each other,” she said. The Night Market idea came from the Christmas markets she used to hold in conjunction with the Methven Farmers’ Market. “Some of those original stallholders have been supporting various Methven markets ever since, so we are stoked to have them come to the Night Market,” she said.

OUR VIEW
Thank you for a selfless job well done Matt Markham
EDITOR
I
’ve always thought it takes a pretty brave and selfless person to run towards a fire when everyone else is usually running from it. Acts like that are those of incredible human beings who are willing to risk their own lives in order to help or save others – and boy, aren’t we lucky to have such people in our community. On Monday night we saw those very people pushed to the absolute limit when they dashed out to Winslow to battle the biggest blaze in the district this year – without thought or fear about what they were going to face. And today (Tuesday), International Volunteer Day, there are no more fitting recipients of our plaudits for their efforts than our local firefighters. Monday night must have been tough for our guys and girls. Being such a tight-knit community, there’s every possibility that each emergency they head to is going to somehow involve someone they know or know of. Then they also have to deal with the fact that a few of their own were injured and taken to hospital – not an easy thing to deal with I would imagine when the battle you are facing requires your full concentration. An emergency is no place for emotion for these wonderful people though. That stuff gets left behind in the truck. There’s a job to be done and our firefighters just get in and do it. And we should applaud each and every one of them for everything they do on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis. While those at the coal face on Monday night, staring the flames right in the eye, will be the ones who are rightfully the most lauded, there’s also those who stay behind, ready and waiting in case someone else needed help, and they deserve the praise as well. We are truly blessed to have a group of people who are willing to put others ahead of themselves at the drop of a hat each time that siren goes off, and in some ways, we probably don’t appreciate or recognise that enough. So, to each and every firefighter out there in this district – thank you, we are bloody lucky to have you.

T
he waiting is long over. Winston “Moses” Peters came down from the mountain some weeks ago. From the summit of that misty peak he brought with him a deal, forged at the very highest level, with which to barter and flatter Jacinda Ardern into acceptance of his conditions, should she really wish to become Prime Minister of Aotearoa, New Zealand, then, now and for the foreseeable future. Under its terms he would receive the appointments of his choice while behind the scenes hold sway to a degree heretofore unknown or imagined. But that is not all. By no means. In the last few days the kitty has begun to emerge from the bag, the lower case writing to appear on the wall. In fact, the published deal between the parties is said to be missing its last five pages. This is explained away by reference to a deliberate shrinkage of the font employed to ensure no space was wasted or an unnecessarily, environmentally-damaging footprint left behind, likely to contaminate the atmosphere in its wake. Now, it seems that may have been a more than mildly disingenuous explanation. Yesterday a newspaper near me was, in its editorial, fulminating against the Machiavellian inclinations of our new government.
Nick Lindo
EYE ON POLITICS
The transparency upon which Labour bed-rocked its appeal to the nation will apparently, only be so when it suits Jacinda and her acolytes ... When it suits and not when it doesn’t. With the assistance of more sophistry, Labour has argued it does not have to release the missing pages as the coalition negotiations were done by party leaders not ministers! And the voice behind that deliberately misleading claim? None other than that of the legendary Labour eminencegrise, she who was never more than a metre from the righthand of Helen Clark throughout her prime ministerial reign, Heather Simpson! (And then for a further eight years with Clark at the United Nations.) In fact she was known as H2 in order to distinguish her from her boss H1! Jacinda must feel she is in excessively safe hands. So the redoubtable, well-worn, Heather has come up with a form of words which allow the protagonists of the coalition deal to fudge the wording and
concoct a formula that gives Winston his wavy-haired head, without the necessity of revealing the details to us, the longsuffering, electorate-at-large. However, thanks to the efforts of a usually reliable source (and there are always a few of those useful people around) and a bulletin from the well-known, bullish Act MP for deepest and leafy Epsom, David Seymour, I am able to bring to your table some of those hidden details of Winston’s secret coalition agreement with the heart-melting, Jacinda. ■ There are significant new extra spending promises which the negotiators want to keep from the prying eyes of Treaury. ■ Labour’s election promises were understated and a blow-out is on the cards. New Zealand’s credit rating is thus at risk; immediate effect of which is – an all-round rise in mortgage payments. ■ The missing five pages (see above) would be damaging to both parties were they to be published. ■ In effect the document creates two governments; Labour/Green and NZ First. ■ More or less every proposed legislation by Labour must first be submitted to Peters for his approval – or not. ■ Labour has agreed NZ First manifesto promises – such as the Northland port and
new rail line – will have priority. ■ All government appointments must be approved by NZ First. ■ As Foreign Affairs Minister, Peters has the sole right to nominate all ambassadors and other diplomatic posts. And so forth and so on. There is quite a lot more in the same vein from where that came. (Seymour’s usually reliable source). The sum total of the above, and the rest that follows, is to give Winston Peters a level of unbridled power more akin to a would-be dictator of Trumpian ambition than that of a mere prime minister. Maybe that will just have to satisfy him. It’s his last throw of the political dice. Perhaps, not quite as he would have wished but a satisfying pay-off, nevertheless, for all his years of wheeling, dealing and bottom-lining. You must now be the judge of the possible / probable veracity of what I have conveyed to you. Travel ban approved The Supreme Court has granted President Donald Trump’s request that his revised travel ban be fully enforced while legal challenges proceed in lower courts. The justices approved a request from the President’s lawyers to lift restrictions on the order, which bans most travellers from eight mostly Muslim-majority nations, that had been imposed by lower courts. The court gave no reason for its decision, but said it expected lower court reviews of the executive orders to proceed quickly. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor would have kept in place partial stays on the order. Judges in the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond and the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco had cast doubt on Trump’s third executive order banning almost all travel from certain countries. Oral arguments are scheduled soon in both federal appeals court cases on whether the ban exceeds the President’s broad powers on immigration. The latest iteration, the third ban that Trump has ordered, blocks various people from Syria, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Chad, Somalia, North Korea and Venezuela. Six of the countries have Muslim majorities. But federal judges in Maryland and Hawaii have blocked its implementation for “foreign nationals who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States”. They said such people include grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins of people in the United States. The language is drawn from a Supreme Court decision last June that exempted such foreign nationals from Trump’s
Ruby Rose in tears Ruby Rose has lashed out at reports she has an eating disorder, describing the claims as “reckless” and “dangerous”, and says stress is taking its toll on her face. The Pitch Perfect 3 star, 31, posted a series of comments on her Instagram story, defending her weight and explaining why she has acne. “I never thought I’d see the day I’d leave my beautiful country balling my eyes out ... when I was so excited to come home,” Rose wrote on Instagram, after she was photographed leaving Australia alone. She had been holidaying in Byron Bay with her Veronicas singer girlfriend, Jessica Origliasso.
US President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban can now be fully enforced. second version of the executive order, which expired this autumn. Lawyers for Hawaii, one of the challengers to the travel bans, said there was no reason for the Supreme Court to back away from the “equitable determination, dutifully adhered to by the court below,” that it had already made. If anything, it said, the government’s case has weakened. Instead of previous temporary travel bans, the president now “has imposed an indefinite one, deepening and prolonging the harms a stay would inflict,” says the brief submitted on Hawaii’s behalf by Washington lawyer Neal K. Katyal. “The government’s national security rationales have also
grown more attenuated: The order itself acknowledges that the affected aliens can safely be vetted and granted entry, so long as they seek visas the government prefers, and the government’s delay in requesting a stay makes plain that no exigency warrants this court’s immediate intervention.” Solicitor General Noel J. Francisco, representing the Trump administration, argued just the opposite. The new executive order, he wrote, followed a “comprehensive, worldwide review of the information shared by foreign governments that is used to screen aliens seeking entry to the United States.” In his brief, Francisco says the administration’s thorough
review “conclusively rebuts respondents’ claims that the entry restrictions were motivated by animus rather than protecting national security.” But Francisco’s arguments might be complicated by the president’s recent actions, such as sharing on Twitter three inflammatory anti-Muslim videos posted by a far-right British activist. Federal judges have frequently cited Trump’s remarks as they have blocked various versions of the ban, and lawyers for those suing over the latest iteration of the directive seized immediately on the president’s early morning online posts. “Thanks! See you in court next week,” wrote Katyal. - PA

Olaf feels the axe Olaf, the friendly snowman from Disney’s riotously successful film Frozen, may enjoy warm hugs, but the character didn’t receive many after audiences were forced to watch his 22-minute standalone film ahead of new film Coco. Disney have stopped showing the film to Coco ticket holders after a significant backlash. Olaf’s Frozen Adventure has been the much-hyped second offering from the team behind Frozen, who are working on a featurelength sequel to the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The length of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure meant that family audiences were waiting up to 40 minutes – including adverts – before the opening credits of Coco.

2017 vehicle sales hit record high New Zealand new vehicle sales will hit a record in 2017 for the fourth consecutive year, with November data showing sales so far this year are already higher than for the whole of 2016. Some 14,594 new vehicles were registered in November, ahead of the 13,740 registered in the same month last year and marking a new November record, according to the Motor Industry Association. The latest data for November shows motor vehicle registrations so far this year are 9.5 per cent
ahead of the same period last year at 148,335 and are already ahead of the total for the 2016 calendar year of 146,753. Vehicle sales have been on a tear over recent years as the economy is buoyed by low interest rates and record migration and as consumers benefit from a higher local currency and competition among car dealerships. “With one month to go the question on everyone’s lips is whether the total for the year will break through the 160,000 mark for the first time,” MIA chief executive David Crawford said.
“The 150,000 total mark for a calendar year is no longer a question.” In November, registrations of new passenger vehicles increased 5.9 per cent to 10,289 compared with the year earlier month, while registrations of commercial vehicles jumped 7.2 per cent to 4,305. Japanese car maker Toyota remained the market leader in November, with a 22 per cent market share, followed by Ford on 11 per cent and Holden at 10 per cent, the MIA said. – NZME

The industry report said an increase in visitor numbers over the summer period would benefit retail, however, Amazon’s entry into Australia and ongoing competition from foreign websites trading without paying tax, was an ongoing concern. Forsyth Barr recently assessed the implications of Amazon launching in Australia and found the retailers most at risk to be selling commoditised products such as media, toys, and electronics. “Amazon offers a new sales platform to help Kiwi retailers reach a global market. Success is based on either having a unique product or having the most competitive offer in terms of value, selection and convenience,” the report said. The retail sector is “under significant and sustained pressure”, according to the latest Retail Radar report. Retailers are hoping for better results over the next three months, with 48 per cent of retailers expecting to meet their targets in the fourth quarter. “On the positive front, as the weather improves around the country and the festive season approaches, three-quarters of retailers are expecting to hit their sales targets for the rest of the calendar year, although this is down from 92 per cent at the same time last year, reflecting the negative retail trading environment

Warmer weather, increased visitors and the lead up to Christmas offer a glimmer of hope for retailers who missed their sales targets in the September quarter. According to a survey by Retail NZ, 57 per cent of retailers failed to hit their sales targets for the period ending September 30. That, combined with a drop in consumer spending in September, is the third consecutive quarter where a significant number of retailers had failed to hit their targets, Retail NZ’s general manager of public affairs Greg Harford said. Sales across the retail sector for the September quarter were $21.9 billion, up 5.4 per cent on the same quarter of last year – a 0.1 per cent increase in seasonally adjusted terms. Consumer spending has been constrained during the first nine months of the year, with econo-

the party should be looking into the issue. “Where the margins currently are, we know in the past the minister of energy under the previous Government have voiced concern over margins going over this threshold,” he said. “If [companies] don’t reduce prices they are likely to invite closer scrutiny.” The new energy minister, Megan Woods, was looking into a review on fuel prices, which was part of the Labour/NZ First coalition deal, a party spokesman said. The inquiry into fuel pricing led by previous Energy Minister Judith Collins hadn’t gone far enough and one option for the new government was to refer the issue to the Commerce Commission. “The minister has previously expressed concern that Kiwis are paying over the odds at the pump and that seems to be especially true for people living in Wellington in the South Island,” the spokesman said. – NZME

The AA is calling for fuel retailers to drop their prices immediately, saying the current national price for petrol is simply too high. Spokesman Mark Stockdale said the last time the average price was this high, the Government stepped in. Stockdale called on fuel retailers to drop the price of both petrol and diesel by four cents a litre immediately, saying they never should have been so high to begin with. “The AA monitors fuel prices and fuel company margins,” he said. “We’ve seen those margins have crept up in the last fortnight and they’re above average.” A price jump of two cents a litre on November 24 should not have happened, let alone price creep in the weeks since, he said. The national price for 91 unleaded petrol is currently $2.15 a litre and the price for diesel is $1.49 a litre. Getting creative with courgettes
I
n deep, dark winter a courgette is an expensive thing of beauty, but by mid summer they’re a vegetable that’s in over supply. Don’t underestimate the humble courgette. It might be one of the less tasty vegetables around but it can be used in countless ways and is at home in salads, meat dishes, grilled, baked or when young, raw. With a courgette or two in the fridge crisper bin or in the garden you’ll have the foundation for a colourful meal.
Corn and courgette fritters 185g can sweetcorn, drained 2 spring onions, finely chopped 50g courgette, grated 1 t smoked paprika 50g self-raising flour 5 eggs, 1 beaten, 4 for poaching 40ml milk Dresssing: 4 T sweet chilli sauce juice 1 lime 1 T vegetable oil mixed leaves, to serve ■ Combine dressing ingredients ■ Mix the sweetcorn, spring onions, courgette, paprika, flour, beaten egg, milk. Add seasoning in a large bowl and set aside. ■ Put a large pan of water on to boil. ■ In a bowl, mix the chilli sauce with the lime juice and set aside. ■ Heat the oil in a large, non-stick pan ■ Spoon in four burger-sized mounds of the fritter mixture (you may need to do this in two batches). ■ When brown on the underside, turn over and cook for 3 mins more until golden. ■ Meanwhile, poach the eggs in the simmering water ■ Remove with a slotted spoon ■ Serve the fritters topped with a
poached egg, mixed leaves and a drizzle of the chilli dressing.
Creamy courgette lasagne 9 dried lasagne sheets 1 T sunflower oil 1 onion, finely chopped 700g courgette (about 6), coarsely grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed 250g tub ricotta 50g cheddar 350g jar tomato sauce for pasta ■ Heat oven to 220°C ■ Put a pan of water on to boil ■ Cook the lasagne sheets for about 5 mins until softened, but not cooked through. ■ Rinse in cold water, then drizzle with a little oil to stop them sticking together. ■ Heat the oil in a large frying pan, then fry the onion. ■ After 3 mins, add the courgettes and garlic ■ Continue to fry until the courgette has softened and turned bright green. ■ Stir in 2/3 of both the ricotta and the cheddar, then season to taste. ■ Heat the tomato sauce in the microwave for 2 mins until hot. ■ In a large baking dish, layer half the courgette mix, then pasta, then tomato sauce. ■ Repeat, top with blobs of the remaining ricotta, then scatter with the rest of the cheddar. ■ Bake on the top shelf for about 10 mins until the pasta is tender and the cheese is golden.

■ SAILING
Burling best in the world Team New Zealand’s Peter Burling has been named as the world’s best foiling sailor after winning the World Sailor of the Year award for the second time. Burling picked up the award following his impressive performance within Team New Zealand’s crew that sailed the mighty 50-foot catamaran to victory at the America’s Cup in June. The 26-year-old won the prestigious gong from Foiling Week, an organisation that holds foiling forums for innovation in the sport’s development areas and regattas around the world. The award ceremony was held in Garda, Mexico, but the sailing star couldn’t attend as he was racing with Team Brunel in the Volvo Ocean Race set to conclude in the Netherlands. “It has been a really cool year up in Bermuda. “It’s awesome to get the accolade,” said Burling at the awards ceremony via a video message from Cape Town where he has arrived following the second leg of the race. “Thanks to the foiling community, it is obviously an immense honour to be given this award,” he said. “It has been an incredible year pushing the boundaries with the America’s Cup with the whole team over there, pushing the boats super hard.” “Definitely the improvements that we made throughout that cycle were really pretty amazing and then to be able to jump on a Moth and have a good bit of fun with so many other people
Australian-based administrator Andrew Fraser is to take up a place made vacant on the New Zealand Rugby League board by the departure of Jennifer Rolfe. Rolfe is stepping down this week after seven years as a director and will be replaced by Fraser, a former head of strategy and investment at the NRL. Fraser was a director of the Rugby League World Cup and serves a similar role on a range of other non-sporting bodies. - NZME
Boot on other foot Mitchell Pearce has implored Brock Lamb to remain at Newcastle, even though the 21-year-old has the same reasons to leave that led to his departure from Sydney Roosters. As Pearce began preseason training with Newcastle on Monday, Lamb has been linked with an early release from his NRL contract to join Manly. Pearce elected to move to the Knights after Cooper Cronk signed with the Roosters, effectively shunting him out of their starting side. - AAP

Peter Burling joins Sir Russell Coutts as the only Kiwis to have won the award twice. doing the same thing and enjoying foiling around in Lake Garda, that was pretty cool as well.” Nominees for the award included Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby, along with two French ocean sailors, Thomas Coville and Armel Le Cleac’h. Burling has joined Sir Russell Coutts, who won the title in 1995 and 2003, as the only two Kiwis to have won the award twice.
Burling said he’s excited to see the foiling game challenged once more by Team New Zealand’s new 75-foot foiling monohull boat design, which was revealed in November, ahead of the 2021 America’s Cup scheduled for Auckland. “I am sure it will be pretty fast and we keep pushing the edge of technology and the edge of the sport ... something that is going to be really cool,” he said.
“The future looks pretty exciting for foiling, a pretty cool concept for the next Cup boat, hopefully other teams will get behind it.” The individual award comes after Team New Zealand turned down the offer to nominate Burling for the Halberg awards Sportsman of the Year, saying that they did not want Burling to be elevated above the team. - NZME
■ RUGBY
Carter against ‘one-legged players’ Outspoken Toulon boss Mourad Boudjellal has hit out at All Blacks great Dan Carter for his decision to quit France for Japan to “make money against onelegged opponents”. Carter chose not to extend his contract at Paris club Racing 92 and instead has signed a twoyear deal with the Kobe Steelers, which starts when the current French season ends in June next year. But Boudjellal took exception to the move in a video column on Eurosport. “Dan Carter told us this week that he is 35, 36, and is leaving for Japan. “But it must also be said that there is a beautiful financial project in a league where there are 10 matches including eight to play against one-legged players. “All will be well, there is no problem,” laughed Boudjellal in the video column. “This is not something that makes a rugby player dream of going to Japan. This is just dreaming of his tax inspector.”
Change on RL board
“It is normal that he wanted, for his old age, to have a more juicy contract,” said Boudjellal. The son of Algerian immigrants, Boudjellal is a self-made tycoon and has bankrolled Toulon’s rise from France’s lower leagues to triple European champions. His strategy has focused on signing some of the world’s best players – often at the expense of their national team. Boudjellal was last in New Zealand headlines following a bizarre phone interview with Radio Sport, where he proclaimed ‘I am James Bond’, in response to questions about Malakai Fekitoa’s signing. Meanwhile All Blacks veteran Jerome Kaino has been linked with a move to French side Toulon, according to a French publication. According to Midi Olympique, Kaino was in discussions with the Top 14 side during the All Blacks’ recent Northern tour. His current contract with New Zealand Rugby goes through to
the end of the 2018 season. Kaino had to return home during the French leg of the tour due to a posterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in the Barbarians match. The 34-year-old, 81-test veteran, was fighting to resurrect his international career after being bumped down the loose forwards pecking order. “It’s not the end of his test career at this point. “He’s got to go home and do what everyone else does and play well in the Super season and then we’ll start again,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said at the time. According to Midi Olympique Kaino would replace Springbok Duane Vermeulen, whose contract expires next June. Former All Blacks Ma’a Nonu, Malakai Fekitoa, Luke McAlister and Alby Mathewson all currently play for Toulon. Kaino has previously played in Japan for three seasons, joining Toyota Verblitz after the 2011 Rugby World Cup. - NZME
Three Kiwis with southern Super Rugby roots have been included in a much-changed Sunwolves squad for 2018. New coach Jamie Joseph has included fullback Robbie Robinson, first five-eighth Hayden Parker and prop Craig Millar in an improved-looking squad for the Sunwolves’ third season. All three New Zealanders have represented the Highlanders, where Joseph and his Sunwolves assistant, Tony Brown, have both previously been the head coach. - NZME
ABs record gone The All Blacks have been knocked off the College Football record books. The USC Trojans made history in the weekend when they defeated Stanford 31-28 to claim the Pac-12 Championship. It was the second time this season that USC defeated Stanford. USC is the first team to defeat Stanford twice in the same season since 1913, when the All Blacks did it – in the days when Stanford’s official football team actually played rugby. - NZME
Lemanis has a plan Brisbane coach Andrej Lemanis doesn’t see the issue in modelling the reborn basketball club after New Zealand, where he launched his career by winning three consecutive NBL titles. The Bullets’ second season back from the NBL wilderness has been punctuated by close losses and indifferent form. But Lemanis pointed to a near-sell out crowd in Sunday’s crucial win against New Zealand, and the team’s commitment to community work as evidence the Bullets are making inroads. - AAP

Steven Adams has backed-up his career-best scoring performance in the NBA. He’s scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 90-87 home win over the San Antonio Spurs, two days after he scored 27 points in a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. It’s Adams’ sixth double-double of the season and has helped the Thunder move to a game and a half off eighth place.

In brief No red card appeal Paul Pogba is to start against CSKA Moscow after Manchester United decided not to appeal against his red card at Arsenal. The France midfielder was dismissed in their thrilling 3-1 Premier League win over the Gunners and is set to serve a three-game domestic ban. United have not contested the dismissal and the FA will not impose an additional punishment after Pogba appeared to respond to the red card with a sarcastic handclap. It means he will now play in United’s final Champions League group game in which the Red Devils need a point to assure top spot and qualification. - PA
Bevan close to contract There could be good news on the horizon for All Whites striker Myer Bevan. The 20-year-old looks set to sign an MLS contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps, which would be a massive boost in the context of his career. It’s believed he is close to agreeing a multiyear deal with the Canadian side, who have been part of the MLS since the 2011 season. Bevan has already spent time in Vancouver, playing 13 games for their second tier Whitecaps 2 side in the United Soccer League last season. - NZME

Canterbury’s best on show By Matt MarkhaM
Matt.M@theguardian.co.nz
A couple of Mid Canterbury’s own stole the show on a rare visit to Ashburton for the Canterbury Premier Interclub tennis competition at the weekend. After an earlier start than normal for the local interclub competition, tennis fans were treated to a spectacle from some of the best players in the region in the afternoon with all Canterbury Premier tennis played at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre. The afternoon’s play included a Mid Canterbury match-up between Tessa McCann and Ash-
leigh Leonard who were both in action for their respective teams. McCann, who plays for the Cashmere side took honours in the match which went to three sets in a display of fine tennis from both women. Although beaten, Leonard who plays for Te Kura/Hagley Park was far from disgraced. “It was a great match to witness,” Mid Canterbury Tennis’ Andre van Rooyen said. “They got a heap of local support behind them which was great.” Although McCann won the match, her Cashmere side had to
bow to their Te Kura/Hagley rivals. Another local, Larissa Allen, was also in action for the winning side and registered a win in her singles match. The combined side took out the match on games won after both sides won three matches each and seven sets each in the match. 55 winning games gave the combined team the win over Cashmere’s 53. In the other women’s match, Waimairi were victorious over Elmwood in a match which also finished at three matches each before the former won by 7-6 sets.
In men’s action Elmwood lost to Cashmere 1-5 and Edgeware beat Bishopdale 4-2. Waimairi won by default against Te Kura/Hagley Park which robbed Flynn Ness a match on his home turf. Van Rooyen said that the whole day was a great success. “It’s a level of tennis we don’t get to see very often here in Ashburton and I think it was really appreciated. “We had some big names on the courts, including the current Canterbury champion, James Meredith which was a real treat for everyone.”
Dugan not getting hopes up of Blues return Josh Dugan isn’t getting his hopes up of being welcomed back by NSW next year in the wake of the chorus of criticism directed at him in 2017. Dugan put a turbulent four months behind him to play a key
role in Australia’s World Cup final win over England on Saturday. The Cronulla recruit pulled off one of the biggest plays of the game when he came up with an ankle tap on opposite Kallum Watkins, who was sailing towards
the try line late in the game. He described the 6-0 victory as the pinnacle of his career and said it proved he could be a positive influence on a representative team after being shrouded in controversy this year.
“I’m not going to get my hopes up,” Dugan said when asked if he’s expecting to be picked for the Blues. “For me it’s about enjoying (the World Cup win), going back to Cronulla and putting my best foot forward for them.”- AAP
A late Ibai Gomez hat-trick has earned Alaves a dramatic 3-2 win at Girona in Spain’s La Liga. The visitors were 2-0 down with 20 minutes left but Gomez found his scoring touch including the winner with the last meaningful kick of the game. First on 72 minutes he followed in his own shot that keeper Bono had saved and scored from the rebound. He then equalised from the spot after the keeper had brought down Pedraza. And with the last kick of the game he buried a shot under the diving Bono to claim an unlikey three points. - DPA
Statue under attack Someone is not a fan of Lionel Messi. A statue of the Argentina and Barcelona great has been vandalised for the second time this year – this time in a clear red card offence with both his feet taken out. The statue is located in the Buenos Aires district of Paseo de las Glorias and was unveiled last June. Earlier this year the torso and head were removed. - PA
Robson leaves Victory Australia’s biggest soccer club, Melbourne Victory, is looking for a new chief executive after the resignation of Ian Robson. Robson, who resigned from the same position at Essendon in the wake of the AFL club’s doping scandal, will leave the A-League heavyweights to join Rowing Australia. Board member Richard Wilson will act as managing director as Victory begins a search for a new boss. - AAP

In brief Railway defence next Start Wondering won’t race again before the defence of his Gr.1 Sistema Railway title at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “He’ll possibly have a trial or a gallop between races somewhere, it’s worked for us before,” said Evan Rayner, who trains the champion sprinter at Wanganui with his daughter J.J. The seven-year-old was a gallant second when resuming in last week’s Listed Levin Stakes (1200m) at Otaki. - NZME
Star suffers setback Multiple Group One winner Gingernuts has returned to the Werribee University Clinic. “Despite looking well and outwardly appearing in great shape, the team overseeing his recovery have become concerned over a possible infection developing as a result of the surgery,” Te Akau said. All-Stars superstar in cruise mode Unbeaten pacer Chase Auckland made light work of his trial at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury Trotting Owners trials at the Ashburton Racecourse. The winner of five races from five starts, including his last start victory in the Group One Sires’ Stakes final on Cup Day, was sent to the lead with a lap to run by co-trainer, Natalie Rasmussen and was always in control from that point – sprinting up the Ashburton straight in grand style to win under a big hold. The son of former champion pacer, Auckland Reactor, will head to Auckland next week to tackle the riches on offer at Alexandra Park over the Christmas and New Year period. ■ INTER DOMINIONS
Patience key, says Hall
Former New Zealand Group One winner Survived has the full admiration of his Ballarat trainer Archie Alexander. The son of Zed, who isn’t the easiest horse to manage, produced another gritty display on Monday to win his third consecutive Mt Gambier Cup (2400m). “To win three cups three years in a row is unbelievable because he is a very tricky horse,” Alexander said. “He’s actually a nightmare. He picks and chooses what day he is going to show up, but there’s something in the air here.” - NZME
Ellerslie feature likely Peter Lock has narrowed down his options for Hiflyer with the favoured path a trip to Ellerslie on Boxing Day. “Although nothing is set in concrete just yet, at this stage I’m leaning toward the Zabeel Classic. I think he’ll get the 2000m,” the Te Aroha trainer said. “There’s also the Rich Hill Mile, but he’s not a big, gross horse and I think that he would get too much weight. He’s rated 103 now and he would get 59 or 60kg.” - NZME
Target for Tiptronic By Michael Guerin The King of Gloucester Park has a plan to beat Kiwi champ Lazarus in Friday’s $1.1 million Inter Dominon final in Perth. And it involves going to sleep and then waking up mid-race. That is what Gary Hall believes is his only real option in the hottest harness race of the year on a track he has ruled for the last decade. Hall, who drives predominantly for his trainer father Gary senior, has already won three Inter Dominions driving I’m Themightyquinn but his domination of Gloucester Park’s major races extends to almost embarrassing levels. He has driven the winner of the state’s premier race the WA Cup seven times and thinks nothing of bagging five winners at a metropolitan Friday night Gloucester Park meeting. And beating the Kiwis is nothing new to Hall. He has won more Grand Circuit pacing races than any other
Gary Hall Jnr will be taking a patient approach with Chicago Bull in the Inter Dominion Final at Gloucester Park early Saturday morning.
driver, his 22 victories eclipsing Lazarus’s trainer-driver Mark Purdon’s 20 wins. But for all his skills, Hall thinks they won’t be required for much of Friday’s (1am Saturday NZ time) great race after his charge Chicago Bull drew one on the second line behind likely leader Tiger Tara.
“It looks like I will be in the trail and I can just sit there and go to sleep for a couple of laps,” says Hall. “There really won’t be many decisions to be made until they start to up the ante over the last 1200m and then I have to work out when I try and get off the marker pegs.
“If Tiger Tara stays in front and horses like Lazarus, Lennytheshark and Soho Tribeca all do some work around each other in those first two laps, then we have a great chance.” But after thousands of spins around the tight Gloucester Park circuit, Hall admits to having one concern. “I’m pretty sure that Tiger Tara will stay in front but the last thing I want is a tame early section of the race and then horses like Tiger, Lazarus and Tribeca being three abreast starting the last lap with no gap for me because they are so tough they may not stop. “So that last lap is going to be interesting but before that I’ll likely just be a spectator.” Lazarus is the $2.10 favourite with the New Zealand TAB who have Chicago Bull, who won two heats of the series, as the $3.80 second pick. The second Kiwi in the Inter Dominion Final, Have Faith In Me, is only rated a $31 chance. - HRNZ
Progressive four-year-old Tiptronic is a race away from a return to stakes competition. He is unbeaten in two appearances this season and another strong showing in today’s Fisken & Sons Ltd 60th Birthday Handicap (1600m) at Pukekohe will see the son of O’Reilly head to Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “If he runs well again then his next start will be in the Rich Hill Mile,” said Graham Richardson, who trains the gelding with Gavin Parker. - NZME
Black Heart favourite Working in deep sand has put Black Heart Bart’s season back on track and the gelding is now poised to start favourite in the final Group One race of the year. After a winless Melbourne spring when Black Heart Bart was battling a foot issue, he spent time at trainer Darren Weir’s new property which has a deep sand track and complements his bases at Ballarat and Warrnambool. He is favourite for Saturday’s $1 million Kingston Town Stakes at Ascot and Weir said the gelding was sound and looked terrific.- AAP

Watling a batting option By DaviD Leggat New Zealand would “absolutely” consider injury-plagued test wicketkeeper BJ Watling as a specialist batsman, according to national coach Mike Hesson. Watling is battling a hip injury which won’t go away. He kept in Northern Districts’ opening Plunket Shield match against Central Districts which began on October 23 but missed rounds two and three altogether before playing as an opener in rounds four and five. His run productivity is good, highlighted by 115 for ND in their opening Ford Trophy game against Wellington last weekend, but keeping, with its physical demands and movements, is an issue due to the injury. Hesson has an open mind on Watling returning to where his test career began, as a specialist batsman but won’t scratch the idea. He knows what he’s capable of, and his value to the side. “Absolutely. His record with the bat in recent times certainly suggests that, but at the moment he isn’t able to take a full part in the field,” Hesson said. To suggest his days as a test wicketkeeper are coming to an end was “a bit dramatic” he added. “But it’s slow going. He had a bit of a break over winter, things were looking good, but keeping is tough on the body and he certainly feels it.” Hesson said surgery has been
ruled out. It’s simply a case of time and “it’s going a little slower than we’d like”. The plan is for Watling to play another couple of 50-over games for ND before Christmas and hopefully return to a full role after Christmas. Watling averages 38.05 in his 52 tests with six centuries. Break that down and in eight tests as a specialist batsman, he averages 28, the most recent New Zealand’s 199-run win over England at Leeds in 2015. Watling made 120, while the wicketkeeper, on his test debut, Luke Ronchi cracked 88. When playing as wicketkeeper, over 44 tests, Watling’s average jumps to 40.52. New Zealand aren’t about to lightly discard the 32-year-old old. His record shows his value. Tom Blundell came in as his replacement and did a fine job in the Basin Reserve win over the West Indies, scoring a century on debut. He has retained his place for the second test in Hamilton, starting on Saturday. One job Watling is unlikely to get back is as ODI keeper. Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips are the white ball incumbents, off the back of the early-season tour to India, and Hesson said although the squads to play the West Indies in the short forms hasn’t been named he hinted strongly that is not likely to be a discussion to occupy the selectors, Gavin Larsen and himself, for long. - NZME
What do you do after winning your debut test at your home ground? Walk home in your whites of course. That’s what Black Caps debutant wicketkeeper Tom Blundell did following New Zealand’s win over the West Indies at the Basin Reserve on Monday. The Wellingtonian was caught by the team bus walking home in his test whites while carrying a stump from the victory. Blundell had a superb test debut becoming the first wicketkeeper to score a century in their first test after making 107. - NZME
Winning not enough?

England allrounder Ben Stokes has had what most would call a successful day’s sporting endeavour after his disappointing appearance for Canterbury – he’s hit a 78 over 18 holes at the Harewood Golf Club. Stokes was dismissed for only two in Rangiora and failed to take any wickets, but his form with the golf clubs can hardly be faulted. The club’s facebook message stated: “Good to see Ben Stokes out here today enjoying the course and a cracking start to the Christchurch summer!” - NZME

■ MOTOR RACING
Scott McLaughlin’s Shell V-Power Racing team is seeking an explanation from Supercars officials over the New Zealander’s drive through penalty in the final race of the season in Newcastle. McLaughlin was given a penalty for speeding in pit lane, which saw him fall to the back of the field and start a run of incidents that ultimately cost him the title that was won by Red Bull Holden Racing’s Jamie Whincup. While they accept it won’t change the championship result, Shell V-Power want to understand how the 24-year-old McLaughlin was penalised when all their data indicates he wasn’t speeding. “According to the team’s analysis of multiple different data/ video feeds, Scott didn’t exceed the 40km/h speed limit at any point in pit lane,” a release from the team said. “Members of Supercars technical staff have agreed to attend a meeting at the DJR Team Penske workshop on Monday, December 11 to review the incident
Stokes scores 78
Camera footage cannot be publicly released without Supercars permission) has already been analysed. Each analysis demonstrates McLaughlin’s car never exceeded
the speed limit heading into the lane. In fact, when McLaughlin released the brake pedal prior to the pit entry lane, the car was travelling at 33.5 km/h. Following entry, the car’s pit speed limiter brought the vehicle speed up to a steady 38.2km/h without ever exceeding the prescribed 40km/h limit. “The data reviewed includes both front and rear wheel speed (as supplied by Supercars), throttle position, brake pressure, GPS speed and longitudinal Gforce. “DJR Team Penske accepts that the outcome of the championship cannot be altered, but the team feels it has a responsibility to seek clarity and to ensure the methods used to enforce pit lane speed limits going forward are as accurate as possible for all competitors.” Veteran New Zealand motor racing driver Craig Baird is the driving standards observer for the category and he explained the punishment in detail to the New Zealand Herald last week. - NZME
The Black Caps could still drop a spot in the test rankings despite having their sights firmly set on a series sweep of the West Indies. The fourth-ranked Black Caps could still slip back to fifth. It all rests on the Ashes series. Before the current series the Black Caps (97) were sandwiched between England (105) and Australia (97). A 2-0 series win will boost New Zealand to 100 ratings points, however if England manage to win at least one test in Australia it should be enough to stay ahead of the Black Caps while Steve Smith’s men would jump to third. - NZME

poverty doesn’t take a break at christMAS Life hasn’t been easy for the Collins family. While their neighbours were making plans to celebrate Christmas, the Collinses were worrying about how they could get through the week.
This Christmas, The Salvation Army will be called upon to give care to more than 17,000 families, providing support ranging from food parcels to counselling and accommodation.
The cupboards were empty, the bills piling up and they were close to losing their home due to rent arrears. When the family received an eviction notice they knew they needed help, so they turned to their local Salvation Army.
You can care for families like the Collinses this Christmas. Support our Christmas Appeal and give hope to those who need it most.
Together, the family worked on a plan to address their most serious issues, beginning with their living situation and then through financial and family mentoring programmes and food parcels.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Your sensory awareness leans toward the spiritual today. It’s as if your ears can hear intentions instead of words; your eyes can see vibes instead of faces; and your hands can touch souls. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Just because you see what’s funny about the situation doesn’t mean you’re making fun of it. Make sure people know your intention – bring levity and amusement into play, don’t make others ashamed. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): In the same way that telling people to “relax” tends to really agitate them, suggesting that people “be themselves” just might send a thinking person into an identity crisis. Offer no advice, only a hand to hold. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): People don’t grow alone. They might grow solo, but it’s because they are in an environment conducive to growth. To give yourself the best chance at success, build an environment conducive to your own growth. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): One coping mechanism that really works to manage stress is to walk away from the stressors. Leave the room. Leave the building. Changing your view will change your perspective. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Remove yourself from stressors. Go easy. If you get angry once, you’ll only get angry again later with yourself for allowing yourself to lose your cool in the first place. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When you see the truth and they don’t, it can be frustrating. But you actually don’t need them to know the truth in order to accomplish your goal. Knowing it yourself will be enough to get you there. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Plan your next move quietly, and keep it to yourself. It’s not that you can’t trust the people around you – you can – but you’ll learn to trust yourself more if you keep this one close to the vest. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Truly, the same condition that one person calls good fortune another will deem miserable, and both will be accurate. Today you’ll benefit from seeing everything as a neutral circumstance. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ve already attracted a rapt audience. If you walk, they’ll follow. If you run, they’ll chase. Decide carefully what you want to do with this attention before you make your next move. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Shakespeare summed it up in “Sonnet 116”: “Love is not which alters when it alteration finds.” Your heart hasn’t been updated as to recent observations, and even if you were to tell it, it wouldn’t care. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’re slow to bring yourself to believe in all that’s going on today. You’ve been burned before by buying in too early. Anyway, it behooves you to do more research and fact-checking.

Wilder wants 50/50 split WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder insists any unification bout with Anthony Joshua must see him get half of the proceeds. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn is targeting a clash with Wilder next year but has previously said “over my dead body” when asked if Wilder will get a straight split. The 32-year-old Wilder, who has won all 39 of his professional fights, is convinced Hearn is trying to talk his way out of a showdown. “We’re not chasing Joshua. If he doesn’t want the fight, then that’s fine,” he said. “It is one of the biggest fights in the world but it will be 5050 or else we don’t see a fight.”
Career high for Coll New Zealand’s Paul Coll has received a ranking boost ahead of the world championships in England, climbing to a career-best of eighth. Coll rose one spot in the latest update, reflecting a consistent run of form which continued at last week’s world teams championship in France. Coll has drawn French world No.29 Gregoire Marche in the first round of the world championships in Manchester on Monday morning (NZT). Leading New Zealand woman Joelle King remains ninth in the latest rankings.

Wylie turns clock back Neil Wylie had a day to remember in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, McDonald’s Family Restaurant, 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday. With the Aaron Stewart Memorial Trophy going to the victor there was no lack of motivation to find the line first. Neil Wylie rolled back the clock, timing his charge to the line to perfection, scoring the
win and taking the major spoils. Wylie and his co-markers found the front of the race inside the final 5km setting up a spirited finish. Ross Templeton working himself into some good form leading into the end of year club championships, took out second place. Don Sutton finished the race off strongly to secure the final podium position.

Nanai-Williams signs up French club Clermont Auvergne has strengthened its New Zealand connection by signing Tim Nanai-Williams to a three-year contract. Samoan international Nanai-Williams, a longserving utility back with the Chiefs and Counties Manukau, will take up his new deal at the end of next season. “We are convinced that this is a player whose profile perfectly corresponds to the philosophy of movement game that we have developed here in Clermont for several seasons,” said director of rugby Franck Azema.
