Little sting in storm’s tail BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Mid Canterbury caught the tail of the storm that worked its way down the country yesterday, with Ashburton receiving 27.1mm of rain by 5.30pm. It was the first rain in the district for 2018, but it was not accompanied by strong winds, with the maximum gust record-

ed by mid-afternoon yesterday just under 50km/h. That was nothing like the storm that battered other parts of the country, particularly in the North Island, which experienced widespread flooding, gale force winds, power cuts and road closures. During the previous 12 months Mid Canterbury went from a

very wet winter and early spring to concerns about drought in November and December, which was reflected in rainfall statistics. The MetService measured 924 millimetres of rain for the year at its station at the Ashburton Airport, compared to about 692 millimetres in an average year. December rainfall was 59.6

millimetres, compared to the average of 55 millimetres for the month. July set a new record, with 240.1mm for the month. Rain from mid-December onwards provided welcome relief to farmers, after a hot and dry spell raised the spectre of a summer drought. While drought was declared in some other areas of New Zea-

land, Mid Canterbury was blessed with rain. Among relieved farmers is Adam Glass, who dairy farms dryland near Mt Hutt. In early December he had been facing dropping to once per day milking. Earlier this week he said it was pleasing to see that the extremely dry conditions had turned around in the foothills area.

■ TROTT’S GARDENS

Leanne lands dream gardening role BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

If you’re a horticulturalist, dream jobs don’t come much better than being handed the keys to Trott’s Gardens. Three days into her new job as garden supervisor of the now community owned gardens, Leanne Davis is still pinching herself when she looks at the property that is now her workplace. You can go a lifetime, Davis said and never land the perfect job and that meant when she was offered the position she didn’t need to think for long before saying yes. “It was exactly what I wanted, it’s what I know, it’s what I love to do,” she said. Davis comes to managing the garden that carries the title Garden of International Significance with qualifications gained in Melbourne, work experience in the United States and years spent in commercial gardens in New Zealand. She admits it will take time to get to know the three hectare garden as her previous visits were to events and that means she’s never explored every nook and cranny of her new workplace. It will take a full year before the garden reveals all its secrets, Davis said, but she admits she’s already found her favourite place, the extensive perennial borders. “I’m already looking forward to spring, that’s when you find those hidden treasures.” The gardens, developed over more than 30 years by Alan and Catherine Trott, were sold last year to a com-

The property is now run by a board with Davis and a team of volunteer gardeners, lawn mowers and people who meet and greet guests ensuring the gardens are immaculate and visitors made feel welcome. Yes, there will inevitably be small changes made in the garden beds, but essentially the property will remain true to its previous owner, Alan Trott’s vision, Davis said. A big challenge will come in November when the garden is reassessed for its Garden of International Significance ranking. In her last job Davis spent most of her working days planning and organising teams of gardeners, now

she’s looking forward to getting back into frontline gardening. “Yesterday was my first full day when I could get out and start getting my hands dirty again – I loved it.” Along with her volunteer gardeners she says they’re learning as they go and she knows the garden’s creator will be her greatest resource. “We have our first tour group on Sunday and Alan will be taking that. I’ll be one of the group, hiding in the back and listening hard. I need Alan’s head, his brain, everything he knows.” Down the track Davis said she’ll become tour group guide but admits she needs to gain a much greater understanding of the gardens before she tackles that task.

Methven Summer School off to a flying start BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

For 31 years adults from around New Zealand have been going back to the classroom for a few days as they sign on for classes in the Methven Summer School. From small beginnings the summer school has grown to become a must attend event on the calendar of many who return year after year to learn new skills. And this year is no exception says co-ordinator Ally Cox, with many classes full and others running at near capacity. Among the regulars are an English couple who visit their daughter in Methven each year and make summer school enrolment a part of their holiday. Another has been coming for 20 years without a break. “It’s not uncommon for people to tell us they look forward to coming back each year,” Cox said. This year’s school got off to an unexpectedly wet start and while that didn’t affect the

cheesemaking and upholstery courses it did mean the bike skills workshop had to be cancelled, a first for the school, she said. While the summer school opens for enrolments in August, there is always a flood of last minute registrations. “Over the last two weeks the phone has been ringing and ringing with inquiries and people wanting to book.” At the end of each year the committee assesses the courses held and decides where it could add others or give some a break, but after 30 years the event runs to a well tested formula, Cox said. The odd class is cancelled if there is little interest and that decision is made in early December. While the school runs smoothly during the week, there’s a small committee behind the scenes working frantically to ensure every box that needs to be ticked is ticked before the doors open, she said. This year’s summer school runs until Wednesday.

Boundary lines drawn at lakes BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

For decades baches at Lake Clearwater have been built, added on to and changed owners, often on the shake of a hand. And over those years the boundaries between properties have been about historical use rather than boundary pegs, but time has caught up with lakes property owners and the Ashburton District Council wants section boundaries to be clearly defined. The reasons are simple, says council commercial manager Colin Windleborn – it’s about protecting bach owners and people buying properties in the settlement as much as it is about protecting the council when it issues building permits and transfers leases. “There are 200-odd sites up there and they’ve never been properly

surveyed. It’s important to get this done to make sure if people are buying a property they know exactly what they’re buying,” he said. When an aerial plan was overlaid with a lease plan it showed many instances where boundary lines had been crossed by neighbours’ buildings, Windleborn said. “It became clear we needed to have this survey done so people can be sure they’re building within their leased area; it’s apparent we have quite a few that have gone beyond their area.” In most cases the boundary creep had been minimal, but for some properties, particularly on Mount Possession Street, some buildings were well over boundary lines, he said. Windleborn attended the hut holders’ annual meeting and outlined the council’s proposal to

carry out a complete survey of the settlement. Earlier this year, district councillors agreed that to cover the anticipated $100,000 cost of the survey two or three of the 17 sections it owns in the settlement could be sold. Stakeholders including the hutholders would be able to have a say on building baches on these sections when the council made a planning application, he said. “Council could sell the leases and leave it to the purchasers to make individual applications but has chosen not to do this.” Hutholders’ chairman Steve Hadler said there had been a strong resolve by hutholders not to allow any more sections to be sold or baches built. “We have set up a sub-committee with some capable hutholders to fight the decision from the

council to fund the surveying by selling sections,” he said. Other ways of funding the survey needed to be explored, Hadler said. “This is a very delicate situation where people have bought baches in good faith that the building was within the rules and we believe that any survey that is carried out must work in with the existing building layout to avoid large amounts of stress to both the council and the hutholders.” While he accepted the survey needed to be done from a legal point of view, hut owners wanted a commonsense approach to be used in finding a solution to both the survey and the funding, he said. He believes this could be achieved by bach owners working out boundary lines between them with a surveyor then measuring

and logging these. “As long as both lots of neighbours are happy and then a surveyed piece of land is legally allotted to each, they could be rated on the size of the section,” Hadler said. In the majority of cases any crossing of boundary lines was minor and could be dealt with between neighbours, however, there were a couple of instances where people had taken liberties and that might need a different resolution, he said. “The approach needs to be fair and it needs to be practical and done in consultation with the actual property owners or it’ll create hell. It doesn’t have to be hard.” Rather than the actual survey, how it was funded was the biggest sticking point for hutholders, Hadler said.

A year of change, challenge A

s a civic year goes, 2017 was one to remember. With seven out of 12 of her councillors new to the job, mayor Donna Favel was always going to have a tough year, relying on the support of the handful of old hands while she brought the newbies up to speed. But that didn’t stop it being a year where there was plenty of action around the council table. In spite of the inexperience of most, things still managed to get done, decisions made and issues dealt with. It was a different kind of year under a different kind of leadership but there were still plenty of runs on the board. For ratepayers who measure their year in the size of the annual rate rise, it was a reasonable one, 6.5 per cent average, well below the 18 per cent suggested in the long term plan. There were big projects with big price tags that were ticked off but there were also plenty of small wins that came with small costs.

A year’s a long time in local body politics, many decisions are made, community angst is often felt, community support grudgingly given. Over the past year the Ashburton District’s elected members and council staff have worked hard to keep our district not just ticking over but thriving and growing. Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the wins and the odd loss that have occurred along the way.

The big ones: Wheelie bins: They’ve been talked about for years but finally we’ve entered the rubbish collection 21st century. The bins were rolled out in September, a bit later than planned, but that was to allow a wider area to come into the net. Yes there was the odd teething problem but the project is now being counted as a big win by residents. Why did we wait so long? Yes, there was a bit of opposition, but since the first bin load was dumped in the rubbish truck the community has been smiling. Civic centre and library rebuild: It’s a project that’s been under discussion for years, we’ve talked about it for years, we’ve loved the idea and hated the idea, but finally it’s going to happen. The last council had the project ticked off but the newly elected one wanted to take a second look. That delayed things while old options were brought back into play but a few months down the track

Ashburton District Council Waste Recovery Manager Craig Goodwin, finally got to roll out wheelie bins around the district. the original decision stood. The council did a deal with a couple of private land owners and the Methodist Church to secure land in Baring Square east and some time in the future the project will begin. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait as long to have it built as we had to wait for the project to get to

I-SITE: When the year started we had two i-SITES. When the year ended we had one – and a lot of grumpy people. Ashburton’s i-SITE was the victim of a book balancing exercise by Experience Mid Canterbury Its doors were shut in August

but since then the community has signed petitions, attended rallies, spoken at council meetings and finally Peter McQuarters came up with an option that could work – relocate the town’s radio station into the building and let staff reopen and man the i-SITE. Will it fly? Watch this space.

Economic development: The lack of action in this area has to be one of the biggest disappointments of 2017. For 18 months the district has been in economic limbo. Grow Mid Canterbury was canned and no one’s been at the economic development helm. Whatever’s happened in terms

The decision on the site of the new civic building has been controversial to say the least, with the new council originally rejecting the decision made by the previous council. Afer several months of indecision the original decision stood. of economic development has happened by chance. God only knows how many opportunities have gone begging because no one went after them. The council has been trying to formulate a new strategy but nothing much has happened, other than report after report with no clear outcome. The money’s there, the opportunities are there but it seems the council doesn’t see this as a priority. If we’re not careful we’ll lose our reputation as a one of the country’s most innovative and fastest growing districts. Someone needs to be fighting in our corner to secure new businesses and to pull in our share of New Zealand’s limited labour pool. Roading: Good roads are the number one priority for most people, or that’s what surveys tell us. There’s a yawning gap between the amount of money available and the public’s roading expectations. The council’s roading team becomes the public’s whipping boy and at times must feel that whatever they do, it’s wrong. They were dealt a major blow mid year when the skies opened in late July the district flooded, roads were wrecked, infrastructure struggled and the roading team’s budget imploded. The clean up is ongoing. The prospect of a four lane highway between Christchurch

and Timaru fired the public’s imagination for a while after it was promoted by MP Andrew Falloon, but it sank when the government changed. Traffic continues to snarl up through town as commitment to a second bridge across the Ashburton River or lights in Tinwald fail to fire the enthusiasm of roading authority NZ Transport Agency. We’re left thinking, maybe next year?

The little things that didn’t happen: A sugar sweetened drinks policy for council events and premises failed to fire; support for a local government water declaration got the thumbs down; councillors struggled to agree on climate change measures. Building code stickers for older buildings failed to arrive but when they do around 800 properties could have warning signs slapped on them.

Warm fuzzies: During the year we welcomed 213 new citizens, saw the presentation of the first mayoral awards, finally welcomed the festive season with Christmas lights and decorations that weren’t an embarrassment and were treated to a community Christmas tree complete with lighting ceremony and family event that was heart

Hundreds turned out in October to protest the closure of the Ashburton i-SITE at a rally held on the East Street chessboard. warming. Life is a lot more comfortable in the EA Networks Centre pool complex thanks to new air coolers; we enjoyed free parking on East Street, saw three electric car charging points installed around the district and finally made it onto the list of New Zealand’s best public dunnies – it’s taken around 30 years to go from New Zealand’s worst to one of its best.

FUN PHOTOGRAPHY

ENTER AND WIN The Ashburton Guardian wants to find the best photos that represent the kiwi summer fun to be had within our country.

What’s left over for next year? We’ll get a chance to say how many councillors we want – nine or 12; hopefully we’ll see some solid plans for the civic centre and library; work could start on greenfields around EA Networks Centre stadium; a new hotel will take shape in Eastfield and the

EA Networks Centre might be extended. The revitalisation of the town centre will be welcomed now that plans have been revivied; progress on turning the Allen’s Road Chinese settlement into an historic attraction to be proud of is on the list and hopefully the council will make developing the district’s economic strategy a priority.

We are looking for photos that highlight the diverse range of enjoyment available on our doorstep. Winning photos may be used by the Ashburton Guardian in promotions via online and print. Travelling through Molesworth Station has been described as being like driving through a painting.

PHOTOS HAMISH MCCORMICK, NIWA

A day out measuring at Molesworth Station A

cross Jacks Pass, and down into the Clarence Catchment, bursts of buttery yellow broom in full flower are strewn across foothills; bare brown mountains form a jagged line against the sky, and straight ahead, a river meanders to the horizon. This 180,787ha station is New Zealand’s largest farm – about the size of Stewart Island – and is administered by the Department of Conservation. Travelling through Molesworth has been described as “like driving in a painting”. It is full-on stunning but Niwa’s Jeremy Rutherford, an environmental monitoring technician, is more preoccupied with the Clarence River. He leans out of the truck from time to time scanning for a better view of it. Two months previously an unforecasted flood swept through the valley. The river has moved

As the road behind Hanmer Springs turns to gravel and a dust cloud forms in the rear vision mirror, the southern edge of Molesworth Station unfolds. Susan Pepperell goes exploring. sideways and in places completely changed course, he says. “A lot of sediment has been picked up and deposited in different spots. But at other places it looks like half a metre of rocks and gravel have been scoured out of the bed. “It’s not unusual for these rivers to change so dramatically, but it makes it challenging for us.” Rutherford is heading further north to the Acheron River to the first of two Niwa river monitoring site stops on Molesworth. However, the northern abutment of the bridge spanning the Clarence has been washed away – making for what Ruther-

ford describes as “an interesting crossing”, which he executes deftly in a sturdy 4WD. He needs to measure how fast the rivers are flowing, how much water is flowing along them and how high they are. Hydrologists call this measurement the discharge. And they – or their computers – calculate it by multiplying the area of water in a cross section by its average speed. The water level data are fed into a scientific model that estimates the discharge allowing them to monitor flow in real time and continuously. But when the river changes the models need to be updated with new data and that means more

trips more often into the hills for Rutherford and his colleagues. Both Molesworth sites have been recording information since the late 1960s when the former Ministry of Works built large concrete towers connected to the river to measure water levels and flow speeds. These long-term records are immensely valuable. “The changes we see, they happen over decades. Short term data sets tell us a little bit what happened at a given time, but it doesn’t show us any patterns and it doesn’t show us magnitude,” Rutherford said. “You need long term records to capture flood events and low flow events so we know when

a river really is in low flow, and what the ecological impacts might be. ”The long-term measurements are also used to estimate how much a river could flood by, and therefore how big a road bridge needs to be built, or what size culverts can handle the volume of flood water.” It’s the sort of information regional councils and commercial users need all the time and is routine work for Niwa. At Molesworth, though, it’s the recreational river users – the kayakers, rafters, fishers, trampers, campers and swimmers – who need it most and access it via a regional council website. Molesworth attracts thousands of visitors a year, its through road even becoming an alternate back country route from Marlborough to Canterbury following the Kaikoura earthquake, until winter when it is closed.

Niwa environmental monitoring technician Jeremy Rutherford uses an acoustic doppler current profiler river pro to measure depth and velocity of the Acheron River on Molesworth Station.

Concrete towers were built next to the river in the 1960s to help measure water levels and flow speeds. Taking the measurements is a complicated business requiring sophisticated instruments, sensors and a trusty shovel to move a few rocks. Rutherford unloads what looks like a toy boat from the back of the truck and guides it across four transects of the river. It’s an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler River Pro, an instrument that floats on the surface of the river shooting acoustic pulses into

the water to measure depth and velocity hundreds of times in one crossing. These measurements build up a picture that enables Niwa to calculate the flow rate and are taken in conjunction with a number of other measurements made inside the concrete tower and from various sensors. These are transmitted by satellite to enable data to be accessed in real time. On a sunny day the scenery

On a sunny day the scenery at Molesworth Station is breathtaking.

is breathtaking and Rutherford reminds himself not to take it for granted. He has done the same measurements in winter as ice floes charge past him which isn’t so pleasant. “Look around,” he said, opening his arms. “What a place. It makes my heart sing every time I come here.” Then he packs up his toy boat, stashes the shovel and drives off back along the dusty road.

Rutherford loads the water level data into a scientific model that helps to monitor river flow in real time.

MOLESWORTH STATION HISTORY Molesworth Station, located behind the Inland Kaikoura Mountain range, is New Zealand’s largest farm, at more than 180,000 hectares. Crown owned but leased for farming, it supports the country’s biggest herd of cattle. Although best known for its role as part of New Zealand’s high country, Molesworth also has a rich human history. Established trails through Molesworth were used by Ngai Tahu Maori for food gathering and access between the west coast – an important source of jade (pounamu) – and the east coast. Maori described these routes to early European settlers, who well into the 20th century droved their stock over the station’s high passes from Marlborough and Nelson to Canterbury. From the 1850s the main inland route between Nelson/Marlborough and North Canterbury ran through the heart of Molesworth. The old cob accommodation houses at Tophouse, Rainbow, Tarndale and Acheron are reminders of this. The stock routes never subsequently became public roads and throughout most of the 20th century Molesworth Station remained

terra incognita to the vast majority of New Zealanders. Molesworth Station today is an amalgamation of four separate pastoral leases – Molesworth, Tarndale, St Helens and Dillon – abandoned to the Crown between 1938 and 1949 because of rabbit infestation, stock losses in disastrous snowfalls, and economic recession. The station has remained in Crown ownership and gradually recovered from its earlier desolation, thanks to extensive rabbit control and over-sowing of about 37,000 ha in the 1950s and 60s. Today up to 10,000 cattle graze on lands that almost a century ago were being reduced to a desert by millions of rabbits and 90,000 sheep. Over the years Molesworth has developed an almost mythical status. The initial opening of the road through the station as a toll road in 1988, attracted 3300 people. In 2005 the toll was removed and the road is now open for several months during the summer. Its transformation into a recreation reserve has opened up more opportunities for people to experience this remote area. – Source Department of Conservation

26cm,” Mason said. Industry figures show that for the last 18 months insurers have paid more than $265 million for 15 serious weather events in New Zealand, the largest being for excyclone Debbie at $91.4m. New research has shown that insurance alone might not prevent a business from failing in the event of a disaster. “A recent study of the longer term impact of the Christchurch earthquakes on local businesses found that they were unable to recover when they ceased trading for months even though there was no physical damage to their business,” she said. Mason suggests that businesses focus on having a business continuity plan in order to respond to an emergency and keep operating as normally as possible. – NZME

The cost of weather insurance claims is up 70 per cent in the past three years, and could continue to rise as weather disasters are predicted to continue over the next four decades. Storm and flood insurance claims have increased by 56 per cent which was accompanied by a significant spike in the cost of claims, says NZbrokers chief executive Jo Mason. New Zealand is now ranked at a high hazard level for most flooding and cyclone events after being evaluated by the international Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. “While we were already rated as a high risk for seismic activity, now storm and flood losses in our market are on their radar as well,” Mason said. months of the year, trailing analysts’ average estimate for about 2900 units in a Bloomberg News survey. Including Model S sedans and Model X crossovers, Tesla delivered a total of 29,870 vehicles during the fourth quarter. The company delivered 101,312 Model S and Model X vehicles for the year, exceeding its forecast for

the first half of this year. In a recent statement, Tesla thanked customers “who continue to stick by us while patiently waiting for their cars”. The company announced the acquisition of Perbix, a closely held maker of automated machines used for manufacturing, back in November, a week after Musk cited challenges with automating Model 3 production. Tesla ended September with about $US3.5b cash in hand and projected another $US1b in capital expenditures during the last three months of the year. Tesla reported 860 Model 3 sedans were in transit to customers at the end of December. The company said it made significant progress on speeding up manufacturing of the sedan late last month, producing 793 units in the last seven working days. Chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja said during an earnings call in November that cash flow will improve significantly once Tesla ramps up Model 3 output because the company will collect money from customers before paying its suppliers. – NZME

Tesla pushed back a key production target for its pivotal Model 3 sedan again, raising questions about whether the electric-car maker may need to raise more cash. The Elon Musk-led company now expects to assemble 5000 Model 3s a week by the end of June, delaying plans to reach that milestone by another three months. Tesla didn’t come close to achieving an initial goal to manufacture that many sedans a week by the end of last year. Tesla’s slower ramp up in manufacturing Model 3s led analysts to speculate another capital raise could be coming. The carmaker has been blowing through more than $US1 billion a quarter as it’s had trouble scaling up output despite spending heavily on robots, assembly lines and tooling for the sedan that is Musk’s cheapest yet, starting at $US35,000. The stock climbed 46 per cent in 2017 and the company ended the year with a $US52.3b market capitalisation, placing it ahead of Ford and behind General Motors. Tesla reported deliveries of 1550 Model 3s in the final three

ack in the day a land deal was often done over a beer, plans were drawn on the back of a matchbox and the whole thing signed with a handshake. Things have changed, expectations have changed and the rules have changed. There are now tight regulations around buying and selling property, transferring land titles and how we build or renovate our homes. Inevitably there’s always a bit of a time lapse while the past catches up with the present. And that’s exactly what’s happening at Lake Clearwater where, for decades, bach owners have virtually run their own ship in terms of buying, selling, building, renovating and extending their properties. Like every local authority, the Ashburton District Council has to be squeaky clean in all of its deals. It has hard and fast rules it must run its business by and one of those is making sure any land deals it’s involved in are done by the book. As the official administrator of the lakes settlement land the council is responsible for reassigning leases on sections as properties are sold. That means it needs to know exact details about the land, ie where its boundaries are. In many cases it does not. There are no boundary pegs defining sections and some boundaries more folklore than fact. The council can’t deal in folklore. To keep its dealings squeaky clean and, to ensure people spending good money buying property get what they think they’ve paid, for it needs to sort out the bach boundary issue. It’s trying to do just that but not every bach owner is happy. Some don’t want the survey done – you’d have to ask why – and most don’t like the way the council wants to fund the project, even though it plans to foot the bill. To do this, the council plans to sell the leases on two or three sections it owns. That could mean new, private buyers who would build new baches. The hut owners don’t want that, they don’t want any more baches in their settlement, but two or three more among 200 – would anyone notice?

Community Christmas lunch On behalf of the Ashburton Community Christmas Lunch Committee I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making our event on Christmas Day such a friendly and successful one. A wide cross-section of our community attended the lunch this year at a new venue, the Tinwald Hall, and approximately 150 people enjoyed a delicious meal. The main purpose of the lunch is to ensure that people who may have spent Christmas Day without their family are made to feel part of a “community family”. We are very grateful to everyone who helped us achieve this including local businesses and individuals who donated food, the ladies of St Paul’s Church who hosted a fund-raising lunch, those who donated to Coniston Homestead’s Christmas display, Dan Lysaght for cooking the meal and all the hard-working volunteers who helped on the day. We couldn’t have done it without you and hope you’ll all be back to the Tinwald Hall on Christmas Day 2018. Ann Allott Co-ordinator

Camp birth totals concern An international aid agency projects that 48,000 babies will be born this year in overcrowded refugee camps for the Rohingya Muslims who have fled to Bangladesh from neighbouring Myanmar. Save the Children warned in a report released yesterday that the babies will be at increased risk of disease and malnutrition, and therefore of dying before the age of five. Most of the babies will probably be born at home in tents, the agency said. “The camps have poor sanitation and are a breeding ground for diseases like diphtheria, measles and cholera, to which newborn babies are particularly vulnerable,” said Rachael Cummings, the agency’s health adviser in Cox’s Bazar, the nearest city to the camps. “This is no place for a child to be born.” More than 600,000 Rohingya, a minority group from Ra-

Rohingya Muslim women stand holding their sick children at the Bangladesh border. PHOTO AP khine state in western Myanmar, have fled what the United Nations says is a campaign of ethnic cleansing by the Myanmar military and Buddhist mobs since late August last year.

Large drug haul for Australian navy ship HMAS Warramunga, supported by a British navy helicopter, seized more than 3.5 tonnes of hashish from a vessel in international waters on January 3. “The boarding party did a first-rate job locating and seizing more than 3.5 tonnes of illicit narcotics,” Warramunga commander Dugald Clelland said in a statement yesterday. “The Royal Navy helicopter was able to cue us on to a suspect vessel which Warramun-

ga’s boarding party searched in challenging conditions.” The drug haul comes one week after Warramunga seized almost eight tonnes of hashish and 69 kilograms of heroin – worth an estimated $415 million – from drug smugglers on three separate vessels in the Arabian Sea. Warramunga is currently deployed to the Middle East on Operation MANITOU, which is Australia’s commitment to maritime security and stability in the region. – AAP

Many live in flimsy tents made of plastic and bamboo in camps and makeshift settlements. Almost 60 per cent are children, many of whom suffer from disease and malnutri-

tion, UNICEF has said. A Bangladeshi official called the projection of 48,000 babies mind-boggling. “Simply, this will be disastrous and terrible for us,” said Priton Kumar Chowdhury, a deputy director of the government’s social services department in Cox’s Bazar. “I can’t imagine it, and my brain does not actually know how to deal with this.” His department has identified more than 36,000 orphans in the camps, he said. Save the Children based its projection on an estimate of the number of pregnant women among the refugees. Bangladesh has been negotiating with Myanmar to set up a protocol for the voluntary return of the Rohingya, but it remains unclear if and when they will go back, given continuing concern for their safety in Myanmar. – AP

There’s a Black Panther party going on. Superhero fans, movie fans and especially connoisseurs of black culture – American and African – are eagerly awaiting the debut of Marvel’s Black Panther movie starring comic books’ first black superhero with an enthusiasm not often seen in cinema. Black Panther viewing parties are being scheduled around the USA for the February release, smack dab in the middle of Black History Month. Clothing lines are being designed around the bright colours and Afrofuturism styles of Wakanda. And people are already calling the still-unseen movie one of the most important of 2018, despite the fact that the character has only appeared once on screen.

Oceans getting sicker Global warming is making the world’s oceans sicker, depleting them of oxygen and harming delicate coral reefs more often, two studies show. The lower oxygen levels are making marine life far more vulnerable, the researchers said. Oxygen is crucial for nearly all life in the oceans, except for a few microbes. A second study finds that severe bleaching caused by warmer waters is hitting oncecolourful coral reefs four times more often than they used to a few decades ago. Only six of the 100 coral reefs weren’t hit by severe bleaching: four around Australia, one in the Indian Ocean and another off South Africa. When put all together, there are more than 32 million

square kilometres of ocean with low oxygen levels at a depth of 200 metres, according to the scientists with the Global Ocean Oxygen Network. That amounts to an area bigger than the continents of Africa or North America, an increase of about 16 per cent since 1950. “The low oxygen problem is the biggest unknown climate change consequence out there,” said Lisa Levin, a study co-author and professor of biological oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “Just off Southern California, we’ve lost 20 to 30 per cent of our oxygen off the outer shelf,” Levin said. “That’s a huge loss.” – AP

The way it should be: A happy crowd watching on as someone wearing a Tui T-shirt catches a six, without crashing violently into unsuspecting spectators.

Catch zones for the big sixes New Zealand Cricket has announced they will be implementing ‘catch zones’ with immediate effect for the Tui Catch a Million competition. The competition was brought into the spotlight during the Black Caps’ T20 match against the West Indies on Wednesday night in Mt Maunganui. A number of would-be catchers in their specialised orange com-

petition shirts hurled themselves at the ball with little regard for those around them. New Zealand Cricket released a statement regarding the competition, which said changes would be made in the interest of crowd safety. “The principal change to the competition procedures will see a dedicated “catch zone” created at venues, in which Tui Catch-A-

Million contestants will have to be located in order to qualify for the prize. Catches taken by patrons outside these zones will be deemed ineligible. “In another revision, unruly behaviour, or behaviour which risks injury (such as diving), will be deemed in breach of the promotion’s terms and conditions, therefore disqualifying contestants in

the event of a successful catch. “Usual standards of behaviour applying to all venues will apply. “Communications at venues will be amplified, in terms of both ground announcements and onlocation personnel, so that those patrons involved in the promotion are regularly reminded of their responsibilities and acceptable behaviour. “The only variation to these

new measures will be at Eden Park and Westpac Stadium, where “catch zones” will not be incorporated. “However, all other amendments surrounding behaviour to the competition rules will apply to these venues.” The competition offers up to $50,000 to a spectator in the specialised shirt who cleanly catches a six with one hand. - NZME

McLean Park redevelopment delayed yet again It’s not the summer hoped for at McLean Park, but users aren’t letting the delayed redevelopment of its premier sports stadium dampen their spirits. Last year the Napier City Council – which owns the park – confirmed the redevelopment of the playing area would not be done before winter 2018, about five

months after the $2 million project was planned to start. The upgrade has been proposed for several years, but became urgent after the one-day cricket international between New Zealand and Australia on February 3 was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The work was to start immedi-

ately after the end of the Mitre 10 interprovincial rugby competition in October, but will now not begin until after the Super Rugby match between the Hurricanes and Sharks on April 6. Central Districts Cricket chief executive Pete de Wet said they had scheduled their cricket away from McLean Park for the first

part of the season because they had believed the redevelopment would have been happening. However because of the delay it still had its “warrant of fitness” for domestic cricket, and so could have been used. Now Central Districts will have only one summer match there – the Central Stags v Northern

Districts for the Ford Trophy on February 11, followed by three Plunket Shield games in March and April. There would also be games played from late December at nearby Nelson Park. However he said they were “pretty sympathetic” to the council, because the delay had been out of their hands. - NZME

Another Classic washout The ASB Classic will stretch on for an extra day, with the final confirmed for Sunday after play was called off for a second straight day. Organisers were hoping that the tournament would finish on time today, but they failed to make up lost time yesterday, with play once again being washed out. As a result, both quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played today, with the final set for their scheduled reserve day – Sunday. Showers are forecast until early this morning, but it looks like there will be clear skies for this afternoon and all of Sunday. That leaves a jam-packed Saturday schedule, with the first quarterfinals set to take place at 10.00am. Second seed Julia Goerges will play Polona Hercog on centre court to start proceedings, while at the same time third seed Barbara Strycova will take on Su-Wei Hsieh on the grandstand court. After those matches are concluded, top seed Caroline Wozniacki will play American wildcard Sofia Kenin on centre court, and fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska will take on Sachia Vickery on the grandstand court. The semi-finals will then be held on centre court, but they cannot get under way before 2.30pm. - NZME

It’s all fun and games Switzerland are just one win away from securing a berth in the Hopman Cup final after Roger Federer defeated American Jack Sock 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 at Perth Arena on day five of the mixed teams event. Federer and Sock were relaxed, sharing jokes with each other. And when Sock took a tumble, Federer climbed over the net to help the world No.8 to his feet. Federer secured the crucial break in the 11th game of the second set following an epic rally that had the Swiss scrambling to all parts of the court, then held serve next game to secure the win. - AAP

Specialist optimistic By ElEanor Crooks A leading hip specialist believes surgery could help former world No.1 Andy Murray get back to his best. The former world No.1 withdrew from the Australian Open on Thursday and is considering going under the knife to try to resolve the problem, which has kept him sidelined since Wimbledon last July. Murray has kept the exact details of the injury private but is known to have consulted a number of specialists in a bid to find the best way forward. With a conservative approach not having allowed him to return to the court, an operation now appears a likely course of action. Murray had hoped to avoid surgery and admitted in an emotional social media post earlier this week that he has been told the chances of a successful outcome are not as high as he would like. Professor Max Fehily, the lead surgeon at The Manchester Hip Clinic, has extensive experience operating on athletes with similar problems. He told Press Association Sport: “As I understand, he’s got a condition called femoroacetabular impingement, which is very common in athletes. “We see a lot of it in football, rugby, squash, tennis, and essentially it’s where the ball of the hip impacts against the cup. “One of the problems with athletes is, as it impacts repeatedly, eventually it can damage or tear the labrum, but it can also eventually start to cause arthritis. “Everybody’s on a spectrum, with one end being just a cartilage tear and the other end being significant joint surface damage.” Professor Fehily sees surgery as being a good option and one that could well allow him to return to the top of the sport, albeit after a significant period on the sidelines.

Andy Murray “He’ll have had the best physio and body strengthening you can have, so then the next step is surgery,” he said. “And in a way I’m surprised he’s left it this long because it’s very difficult to perform at his level with that kind of an injury. “Recovery from keyhole surgery, you’re looking at realistically six to 12 months before you’re back at top level. “He’ll have done a lot of work pre-surgery to make him stronger and that will speed up his recovery. “Based on what’s in the public domain, there’s no reason why he can’t return to his previous level.” - PA

Seven-time champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open. The 23-time major winner and women’s titleholder gave birth to her first child last September and says she’s not yet ready for a comeback. Williams made her decision after losing an exhibition match last week in Abu Dhabi to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. “After competing in Abu Dhabi, I realised that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be,” Williams said yesterday. Several other big names, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and 2014 winner Stan Wawrinka, also remain under fitness clouds. - AAP

Southee wary of Pakistan By Andrew Alderson Fresh from his victorious Twenty20 captaincy experience against the West Indies in Nelson, New Zealand pace bowler Tim Southee is wary of a Pakistan batting line-up full of skill but not stars. Todays opening one-day international in Wellington is a day game to capture a holiday crowd. Rain was forecast last night with further showers that become isolated as southerlies ease across the day. Southee said Pakistan’s Champions Trophy victory in England last year had them on alert. Azhar Ali averages 39 with a strike rate of 75 in 50 ODIs; Babar Azam averages 58.60 with a strike rate of 86 in 36 ODIs; and Fakhar Zaman averages 44.44 at a run a ball from nine ODIs, including 114 off 106 balls in their 180-run victory over India to win the Champions Trophy final at The Oval. “A number of guys are not big names but they have a great record to back them, like Azhar and Babar,” Southee said. “[Fakhar] is another exciting player who likes to get on with it. “He’s had a great start to his international career but has never toured New Zealand, so there will be challenges adapting to different conditions.” New Zealand have employed former Black Cap Kyle Mills as a bowling mentor while Shane Jurgensen takes a break to work his way around the Major Associations.

Two dropped catches and a wagging tail has helped England post a first-innings total of 346 on day two of the Ashes series finale. A sensational one-handed catch from Steve Smith reduced the visitors to 6-251 at the SCG, removing Dawid Malan for 62. Australia were well placed to roll England but failed to take simple chances offered by Tom Curran and Moeen Ali, on 21 and 22 respectively. Stuart Broad slapped two sixes in a quick-fire knock of 31 that ended when Smith held another edge. Australia have chiselled England’s lead down to 250 runs, with David Warner out for 56 as his side reached 2-96 at tea. Broad had clean bowled Cameron Bancroft for a duck with his second delivery. - AAP

Future stars on show

Tim Southee is well aware the Pakistanis will present a different challenge to the West Indies. Southee has played plenty of limited overs cricket with Mills, and welcomed his addition. “Kyle’s been brilliant since he’s been around the camp for a couple of days. “It’s exciting to share his knowledge. He played cricket for a long time and is tactically sound.” New Zealand are expected to play three pace bowlers and two spinning all-rounders in Todd Astle and Mitchell Santner. That means the hosts can opt for the pace of Lockie Ferguson

or the accuracy of Matt Henry when they finalise a team. Strong winds are forecast so Southee was certain of one thing. “Trent [Boult] will make his mark at one end and the rest of us will take turns at the other into the breeze. “You prepare yourself for wind [in Wellington] and, if there’s not, you’re a bit happier. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said that it was a special time for his side as they adjusted to the fanfare from triumphing at

the Champions Trophy, and setting in motion a nine-match ODI winning streak. “Our players got a boost. “We’ve continued the same way since with just the odd changes, so it gives us a proper chance of having a decent team at the 2019 World Cup. “People at home were happy and excited. “It was a long time since we’d beaten India, so there were lots of congratulations from the Prime Minister down.” - NZME

Munro set to hit the IPL jackpot After hitting his third international T20 century this week, Black Caps opener Colin Munro is about to hit the jackpot. Munro moved to number one in the ICC T20 batting rankings yesterday further enforcing his position as one of the biggest names in the format. How big? We’ll find out when the Indian Premier League auction takes place later this month. Yesterday the IPL teams announced the players they will retain for the 2018 edition ahead of the January 27 auction. No Black Caps were kept on with the likes of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Martin Guptill all set to go through the auction process again. Last year Boult became a prized asset for Kolkata Knight Riders with the left arm swing man bought by Kolkata for $NZ1.04 million. Thirty-year-old Munro, who has already signed on for the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, played in the 2016 IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders af-

Colin Munro is on fire with the bat in T20 cricket. ter fetching a low auction base price of $67,000. He could expect well more than 10 times that in the next auction. Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals could be likely spots for Munro with the most money to play with for the auction. After becoming the first ever

batsman to score three centuries in international T20s with his 104-run effort against the West Indies on Wednesday night, Munro was ranked the No.1 batsman in the format in the world. His efforts in the West Indies series saw him jump 11 places in the world rankings to sit ahead

of Australian Aaron Finch in the standings. Fellow Kiwi Kane Williamson fell two spots to seventh. Ish Sodhi joined Munro on top as the No.1 ranked bowler after picking up two wickets in Wednesday night’s match. The leg spinner made a big jump up the rankings of his own, moving from 10th. “I’m really grateful for the success I’ve had and I’m stoked to be ranked number-one. It hasn’t really sunk in just yet, but I’m sure it will as the days progress,” Sodhi said. “I’ve been trying to find a really good balance between attacking and defending, and I think it’s getting better and better the more I play. “I played club cricket with Colin when I was about 15 years old and he handed me my first premier cricket cap, so, I’m stoked to see him doing what he is doing at the highest level.” The pair become just the second Kiwi duo to sit atop the rankings at the same time, after Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori in 2009 and 2010. - NZME

New Zealand’s cricket stars of the future are gearing up for a tilt at history when the under-19 Cricket World Cup kicks off next week. Games will be held in Christchurch, Queenstown, Tauranga and Whangarei, with New Zealand’s first game against the West Indies in Mt Maunganui on January 13. The Kiwis will be led by all-rounder Kaylum Boshier, the younger brother of Chiefs Super Rugby loose forward Lachlan Boshier, and are coached by former Black Caps spinner Paul Wiseman. - NZME

Big bucks for Aussies Steve Smith and David Warner are set to become the highest paid Australians in the history of the Indian Premier League, after they were both snapped up for more than $A2 million. Australia’s two batting dynamos dominated the IPL last season, with Warner topping the run-scorers list with 641 at 58.27 while Smith was fourth with 472 runs to his name. Warner was retained by the Sunrisers while Smith will play with the Royals, both for $A2.4 million. - AAP

Big-hitting BBL mentor Max Bryant can think of no better mentor as he prepares for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup than Brendon McCullum. Both well-built opening batsmen, Gold Coast product and Bulls rookie Bryant has enjoyed training with McCullum as part of the Heat squad. Soon to be 19 and fresh off a series against Sri Lanka, Bryant will be one of Australia’s more experienced campaigners. “Baz doesn’t do much talking, doesn’t get very personal about your game, but it’s all about preparation and what they do at training,” he said. “He’s a really chilled guy, hates over-complicating things and just trusts his game and I’m learning heaps from that.”

Marsh gets mojo back Mitchell Marsh insists he is starting to rediscover his rhythm with the ball, despite sending down just five overs on the opening day of the final test. Marsh remains on the comeback path from a shoulder reconstruction, and only returned to bowling in late November. Marsh finished with 0-17, and while he wasn’t surprised at his lack of overs he crucially claimed he was restoring his mojo with the ball. “I just didn’t start my spell very well, but I’m really pleased with how the ball came out today.” - AAP

Weekend Sports Box

VAR could cause chaos Roy Hodgson fears the introduction of Video Assistant Referee technology in English football could spark chaos. VAR will be used for the first time in a competitive club match in England on Monday, when Brighton host Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup. The former England manager said if implemented correctly it can prove a positive addition in officiating matches, but he’s concerned about the impact it will first have. - DPA

A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was. On the couch …. Hard to look past the Black Caps being the prime television viewing this weekend as they really see how their strong performances against the West Indies stack up against tougher stuff in the form of Pakistan. The first ODI gets under way at 11am today, and should be an entertaining affair.

The punt …. Well after a week’s break, we have to look back at Christmas Eve for our latest punt, which for the first time returned something. However, seeing as James Dean only finished third and paid $1.40, we only made $7 back from our $10 investment, not quite what we were after. This week we go back to the cricket, with the Black Caps playing Pakistan in their first ODI today. Despite Colin Munro being the hottest after the sun at the moment, we think Martin Guptill showed some great touches in his innings in the last T20 against the West Indies and think he will stamp his authority on the game as New Zealand’s top run-scorer. $7 on Martin Guptill for top run-scorer at $4.50 could return $31.50. Pool: $45

Son saves Spurs When Harry Kane is enduring a rare spell of frustration in front of goal, Tottenham can always turn to Son Heung-min – as creator or scorer. Son was taking the plaudits yesterday – rather than the team’s top-scorer – after the South Korean unleashed a thunderous strike to rescue a 1-1 draw against West Ham. Showing no signs of exhaustion after completing a second match inside 48 hours, Son spared Tottenham from embarrassment in the 84th minute by cancelling out a similarly breath-taking strike from Pedro Obiang. - PA

Quick quiz Interesting stats have come out about the pay packets of rugby players in Europe’s major professional leagues, so what position was ranked third in terms of earning in the French Top14 competition.

Quote of the week … New Zealand darts player Bernie Smith was thrust into the spotlight after the “cough-gate” scandal at the world darts championships. His opponent Justin Pipe coughed just before he threw his dart that could have won him the match, a big no-no in the morals of darts. In typical Kiwi fashion, Smith wasn’t too worried about the incident. “When I saw it, I did think it looked pretty bad, but you couldn’t hear anything. It was so noisy,” he said. “I wouldn’t have said anything if I heard it anyway.” Quiz answer: Tighthead prop

Father, son sent off

There were some shocking footballer statues made in 2017, and it seems like the trend might not be slowing down heading in to 2018, with this intriguing creation of Chelsea legend Michael Essien being produced in Ghana.

A father and his son received red cards within moments of each other in a fourth-tier match in England this week. Forest Green player Charlie Cooper was sent off for a bad foul in the 39th minute of his team’s game against Wycombe Wanderers. His father, Mark, who is Forest Green’s manager, protested the decision and was promptly sent to the stands. Wycombe won the League Two match 2-1. - PA

Bond takes national title Hamish Bond is now a national champion in two sports. The two-time Olympic gold medallist rower has cashed in on his switch to cycling, comprehensively winning the national elite men’s time trial title in Napier yesterday. Bond, who finished third last year, was dominant this time around, winning by a minute and 29 seconds in an unofficial time of 50 minutes and 48 seconds. The 31-year-old was fastest through all of the checkpoints, building an early lead and increasing his advantage through every timecheck to easily claim the title. Michael Vink claimed second place, while Ashburton’s Jason Christie finished third, a further eight seconds back. Bond was pleased with how he fared in tough conditions. “Really pleased with the result – there’s some tough sections on the course there with the wind – you’ve got punchy climbs which you’ve really got to work hard to get up them. “It was hard, everytime I do a race like that I wonder what on earth I’m doing, maybe I should go back to rowing – it hurts and it carries on hurting for 50 minutes,” Bond joked. Bond was aided by the absence of the country’s two best time trialists, with George Bennett and defending champion Jack Bauer – who is battling an illness – only taking part in Sunday’s road race.

Torino fires coach Torino coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has been fired, a day after his team was eliminated from the Italian Cup with a derby defeat to Juventus. Torino announced the decision on its website yesterday, thanking Mihajlovic for his “dedication and passion shown in these 18 months” with the club. Torino has won just one of its last eight Serie A matches and is 10th in the 20-team league. - AP

Sky’s the limit for Deng

Hamish Bond However, Bond was excellent in the tough conditions, beating Bauer’s time from last year by over a minute, and he is set to race in the time trial at the Commonwealth Games. There, he could be a serious medal chance due to the fact most World Tour riders are set to miss the Games. Additionally, Bond showed promise at the world championships last year, finishing 39th out of 64 riders, despite puncturing early on, and he has shown drastic improvements over the past year. “I know I’m a lot faster – 12 months ago it was my last time trial – I’ve been more or less exclusively training for time trial for 12 months.

“I’ve increased speed in all elements, and that’s what I’ve got to do. You’ve got to keep refining and keep thinking and realise it’s just the start – I’m on an accelerated path,” Bond said. Now, he’s targeting the Commonwealth Games, and another trip to the world championships in the time trial. “This is the first tick in the box and it’s just about progressing. “I’ve identified the time trial as a niche opportunity where I can get on the world stage and compete against the best, but not in a typical fashion. “The Commonwealth Games is the big one this year – that’s an opportunity I’d like to make the most of, and ultimately get back on the biggest international stage

– the world championships.” If Bond can perform on those stages, his ultimate goal – the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – will start to look like a real possibility. The men’s under 23 title was won by Ian Talbot of Team Skoda Racing, while Italy-based professional Georgia Williams claimed the women’s elite title. The Mitchelton-Scott rider powered through blustery, testing conditions on the 20km course, beating Rushlee Buchanan into second. Williams, who was second in both the time trial and road race championships last year, had been looking to go one better in both disciplines, giving her the privilege of wearing the New Zealand national champion jersey in international races. - NZME

Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright has declared Majok Deng a future NBA player after his stunning fourth-quarter heroics in their 97-86 NBL victory over Perth Wildcats. Sparingly used early, the Sudanese supersub exploded in the final term rattling off 16 quickfire points, including three triples and a huge dunk, to steamroll the shell-shocked Wildcats. Blessed with deft touch, eye-catching athleticism, a long wingspan and a desire to score, Deng has all the attributes to succeed in the NBA. - AAP

Adams out of favour The first return of fans votes for the 2018 NBA All-Stars has been released and Kiwi big man Steven Adams was a notable absentee. It seems leading the league in offensive rebound percentage, and being second in offensive rebounds and offensive rating hasn’t been enough to encourage fans to give Adams the nod. The fan vote counts for 50 per cent of the final mark, with the other 5 per cent made up by players and media. - AP

His trainer Brent Mangos, in consultation with former trainer and part-owner, Barry Purdon, pulled the pin on his career after he pulled up sore following Sunday’s Auckland Cup. “We had him checked out on Wednesday and it’s not good, so he’s retired,” said Mangos. “We could do a patch up job on him, but he’s done such a good job for his owners that I think it’s not the right thing to do by the horse. “I spoke to Barry and he definitely was of the same opinion. “I think it’s time to give the horse a good break and a wellearned retirement.” Maxim looked like he could be anything as a young horse, winning the Sires Stakes Series Final at Addington as a two-year-old before running second to stablemate Sky Major in the Ashburton Harness Jewels a fortnight later. At three Purdon took him to Melbourne, where he won the Victoria Derby, then brought him home for a close-up third behind Tiger Tara and Locharburn in the Northern Derby. But he was to break down soon after and would not be seen at the races again for nearly three years.

Otaki latest casualty New Zealand’s wild weather has claimed another race meeting with yesterday’s Otaki meeting abandoned. Stipendiary stewards made the early decision to call off the fixture following 13mm of rain yesterday, a wet forecast and inconsistencies in the track. - NZME

Well-bred mare ready Seraphim is in the right order to continue her hot run of form when she makes her open class debut in the Gallagher Marton Cup at Awapuni today. “She’s been impressive in her last two wins,” said Steven Ramsay, who trains the daughter of Rip Van Winkle and Ethereal with Julia Ritchie. “She hasn’t run past a mile yet, but on her breeding she should.” - NZME

Cup hat-trick focus Multiple stakes winner Longchamp will be reporting back for duty on Monday. The Tavistock gelding will be welcomed back to Andrew Campbell’s Cambridge stable with his winter goal already set. “He’s one of my favourites and I’d love to win the Opunake Cup three times in a row with him, that’s the main aim,” he said. Longchamp has won seven of his 24 starts. - NZME

Maxim’s career was blighted by injuries. He fought back from back-toback tendon injuries to return to the races a year ago, now trained by Mangos due to his access to a swimming pool. He won seven races in the past 12 months, including two on a short winter trip to Victoria. He ran third in the Easter Cup

and even won the Wanganui Cup on the grass, but perhaps his best performance came in the $800,000 New Zealand Cup run at Addington just two months ago. There he flew home for an unlucky fourth behind Lazarus, almost certainly robbed of a sec-

ond placing after being held-up at the wrong time. Maxim, a son of Bettor’s Delight from the famed Scuse Me family that also includes Adore Me, Dream About Me and Christen Me, retires the winner of 12 races and over half-a-million dollars. - NZHN

Saint Kitt in fine fettle Capable stayer Saint Kitt will strip at his best for the Listed Gallagher Marton Cup at Awapuni today. The eight-year-old has improved since his last-start fourth in the Stratford Cup, according to part-owner Grant Cullen. - NZME

Return of the king One of the biggest names in world tennis has touched down in Auckland. Argentine star Juan Martin del Potro arrived just after 5am yesterday morning, on a flight from Santiago. The world No 11 has returned to Auckland for the first time since 2009, when he blazed through a quality field to lift the trophy as a teenager. His safe arrival will be a much needed fillip for tournament organisers, after the weather related dramas of this week. Del Potro said he chose to return to Auckland to have the best possible preparation for the Australian Open, and also because of the great memories of the last time he was here, and the year that followed. “Auckland was an important tournament for me, it was the first one after the great 2008 that I had, a year in which I won four tournaments in a row, reached the quarters at the US Open and the Davis Cup final,” del Potro told the Herald. “So I chose Auckland to get off to a good start and have the best preparation for the Australian Open.” The 29-year-old is one of the biggest male names to grace the Stanley Street courts since the start of this decade. The men’s tournament has had some top players, including David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

James

Juan Martin del Potro and Gael Monfils but Del Potro probably surpasses them all. He’s one of the most popular players on tour, and one of the few who is a genuine threat to the big four of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. At the 2009 US Open he be-

came the first person to beat both Nadal and Federer at the same grand slam. He beat Federer in an unforgettable four hour, five-set final, breaking a 41-match winning streak in New York for the Swiss, who was coming off five consecutive US Open titles.

If you are a budding loosehead prop in France, time to switch sides buddy. Wings – think again. As for first five-eighths, on track. If money matters most, then sports agency Esportif Intelligence has news for you. The latest EI survey updates where the money is spent across positions in European rugby. One of the startling revelations concerns props in France. Tightheads are known to be highly valued in France, and the survey bears this out with the No. 3s trailing only first five-eighths and No. 8s. In other words, recently departed All Black prop Charlie Faumuina will be in the money at Toulouse. But according to the statistics gathered, loosehead props were the lowest paid players in the Top14 competition over 2017/18. Tighthead props also do extremely well in the English Premiership. In the cross border PRO14, the presence of stars Charles Piutau (Ulster) and Leigh Halfpenny (Scarlets) has pushed the average fullback wage into the top spot. Former All Black Piutau, along with Johnny Sexton, is the highest earner in the competition, getting $950,000 a season, while Welsh fullback Halfpenny earns $660,000 a year. - NZME

It was the only major won by someone outside the `big four’ (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray) between 2005 and 2013. Besides Djokovic and Nadal, he remains the only other player to beat Federer in a grand slam final and is one of just three active players (Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych are the others) who can claim three wins or more over each of the ‘big four’. He broke back into the top 20 last year for the first time since 2014 – after taking a title in Stockholm, reaching the last four in New York (beating Federer in the quarter-final en route) and Shanghai and making the final in Basel. A decent result in Auckland will see the 29-year-old back in the top 10, before an assault on the Australian Open, which remains the only grand slam where he hasn’t reached at least the semifinal stage. “Of course I wish I could win more big tournaments and climb in the rankings but the main goal for me after all my surgeries is to stay healthy,” said del Potro, who has had four wrist operations since 2010. “After all that happened to me in the recent years, I am so grateful to be playing on the tour. In 2016, I couldn’t play two or three tournaments in a row. “By the end of 2017, I played five consecutive weeks. So that’s a huge improvement.” - NZME

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Doing things right takes twice as long as doing them wrong, except when you take into account time spent redoing. When you include that in the calculation, doing things wrong takes three times longer. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll be entertained by your own subconscious. The ideas that pop into your head will surprise and delight you. Your wild imagination is a talent that the best people around you will celebrate. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You want to focus on the basics – work and relationships – but the non-essentials seem so much more fun. Why resist? There are silly adventures to be had and bits of ridiculous fun to grab. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Usually when the tug of war is over, someone has been dragged through the mud. When you feel the first resistance, consider bowing out of the game. You may not win, but you’ll stay clean. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Poor communication is never the problem of one person. The “co” in “communication” gives it away. It’s as much about what’s expressed as it is how that expression is received. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It’s more fun to visit places you’ve never seen with people you know well. The shared excitement of exploring builds bonds. If this dynamic isn’t in your immediate future, plan something. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You know not to say all you know, because as interesting as your wealth of knowledge is, people prefer it in brief doses. Instead you’ll focus on listening and encouraging others to play along. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Here’s a counterintuitive remedy to stress that will work today: Increase your task load. That’s right: Take on even more responsibility. Everything will magically fall in order, and you’ll get it all done. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Someone wants to leap into your world, but don’t let it happen. It will be far more effective to slowly envelop them. Create a journey you both can enjoy. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When it comes to love, today you’re dangerously unguarded, opening your heart based on nothing but an intuitive notion. Ultimately the rewards will more than match your risk. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It will feel really good to handle what isn’t working. Get repairs. Mend the tears. Fix whatever needs it. And if it still won’t go, it will feel even better to cut your losses. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): When two people have more or less the same conversation over and over again without understanding each other’s needs any better than when they started, this is an illustration of poor communication.
