END OF AN ERA Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A trust that has quietly provided financial support for people needing help at the end of their lives has stepped out in a new direction. The Ashburton Palliative Care Charitable Trust was established in the 1990s and since then its trustees have signed off on grants that would improve the lives of people receiving palliative care. But this week the trust became part of the large community funding trust, Advance Ashburton. It was a decision that wasn’t easy to make, but one the trustees know will ensure the longevity of its assistance programme as well as enhancing the ability to boost funds through new donations. The trust was born out of a drive in the early 1990s to establish an in-patient palliative care facility in the Ashburton District. There was strong public support for the facility, but the high cost of establishing and then running the service meant it did not proceed. Along the way, however, funds were raised and it is those funds that provided a seed pool on which the palliative care trust was built. It was established in 1996 and since then work has continued with requests and donations from individuals and service clubs providing it with a modest pool of funds to disburse. And none of that will change under the new administration model, said trustee Brendon Adam. “We wanted the trust to be more visible and accessible and more active,” he said. One of the key confidences that came with moving the trust under the umbrella of Advance Ashburton was knowing the element of speed in approving applications would continue, Adam said. “It’s been key for the trust to make decisions quickly and we’ll do this within 24 hours.” People on an end-of-life journey and their families did not have the time or the energy to have to search for assistance or to wait for this to be delivered, trustee Christine Deans said.

A love story of a different kind By Heather Mackenzie

heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

It was romance which led Gavin Templeton onto the stage back in 1982, but it’s a different kind of love that keeps him coming back now. Arguably one of Mid Canterbury’s biggest musical influencers, Templeton explained that he was lured onto the stage nearly 40 years ago under the pretence that one of the dancers in the show fancied him. And just like any 21-year-old male likely would, he jumped at the opportunity. Did love eventuate? Absolutely not, dream of romance on the stage of Orpheus and the Underworld were shattered when he discovered he had been duped. “She didn’t fancy me at all, in fact she barely noticed me when I showed up,” Templeton said. Romantic dreams may have been shattered, but for Templeton a lifelong passion did start that day in the Tinwald Hall, the love of musical theatre and performing. Fast forward to 2020 and in a career that has to date spanned 38 years, there is very little Templeton hasn’t mastered in the performance field. Not only has he appeared in 50 shows since joining Ashburton Variety Theatre in 1987, he has written and directed six shows for them, been an active committee member, started the covers band KopyKats and formed an entertainment company, Off the Cuff. Templeton said while musical theatre has taken up a lot of his time over the years, he has also got an immense amount back for his efforts. When putting on a show, Templeton said you get to know the people in your group pretty well, resulting in lifelong friendships. “People I have been in a show with three, four, or seven years ago will stop and give me hug and say ‘Do you remember when we did this?’” Quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson’s famous line ‘Life is a journey not a destination’ Templeton said the same thing applies to musical theatre. People grow in skills and confidence as the time goes on, so each show is a journey. Templeton remembers the first Just the Boyz show he put together. He said all the boys came out singing Just a Sweet Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and they bought the house down. When Templeton first floated the idea past them, it was not popular. They told him in no uncertain terms they were not going on stage dressed like transvestites. However, come the first night on stage,

Getting ready to go on stage as Calamity Dame for the Methven Theatre Company. PHOTO SUPPLIED and the boys loved it. So much so that Templeton said he got pushed to the back of the stage, as the others wanted to bask in the limelight. “The audience gave us a standing ovation,” he said. Working front of house, Templeton knows if the show is a hit or not by the way the audience members react to his ‘Did you enjoy that?’ question when they are leaving. “If they smile and say ‘It was very nice, thank you,’ they didn’t enjoy it all that much. But if they leave smiling, giggling and singing the songs, I know we got it right.” When writing musicals for the Variety Theatre, Templeton said he is never off duty. An avid radio listener, he said when he hears a song that could work well in a musical, he writes it down and files it away until the time is right. Templeton is well aware that in his role as director he can come across as a bit terse. “You know how every theatre company has a grumpy old man, well I’m sure the cast think that’s me at times.” There is however method in his madness. Templeton said sometimes it’s a matter of pushing people a bit harder than they would like, to unleash the potential he can see.

“I have to wave a stick sometimes, not to make a fool out of anybody, but I know what will work if I push them a bit.” His band KopyKats was formed in 2003 with fellow singer Brian Taylor. Using backing tracks, the covers band performs well known songs with an added touch of theatre antics thrown in for good measure. “In the beginning we would dress in bright fluoro colours, but lately we have toned it down a bit to more black, red and white colours.” Performing at weddings, fundraising events and free concerts, Templeton said he really enjoys being part of the band and that he isn’t worried if people dance to the music or not. “From the stage I can see people nodding along to the music while they are chatting to each other, as long as they are enjoying themselves, that’s enough for me.” The third string to his bow is the enter-

tainment company Off the Cuff. Along the lines of KopyKats, Templeton combines skits he has written with wellknown songs. This combination goes down well with women’s groups and smaller functions that require an after-dinner entertainer. Doing all this and holding down a day job would be too much for most people, however Templeton is not ‘most people’. “I’m not a much of a sleeper anyway, quite often I am still on my computer at midnight.” Covid-19 lockdown saw the Variety Ashburton Theatre’s performance of It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll Baby pushed back until later in the year. Written by Templeton, the show will be presented in three segments according to the song themes. “There is something for everybody in the show and certainly some moments when the hankies will have to come out,” he said.

■■ PALS SUPPORT GROUP

3

In brief

Pressing on despite disruption By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Launching a new support group in a small community can be challenging at the best of times, but when a global pandemic shuts down the country weeks after the official launch, that can throw up some difficulties. The PALS Support Group for Mid Canterbury was officially launched on March 4 at a gathering of local community group leaders. The group has been started for family, friends and other “frontline” people that have a connection with someone in prison to get support and guidance in a non-judgemental and friendly environment. Facilitator Bronnie McKenna said the lockdown had created issues for the group. “We only had our opening night and one meeting and then we were into lockdown,” she said. “I stayed in touch with the families via the phone and Messenger.” McKenna said they had a small number of people coming to the meetings, with a number of people who had also been in contact, but were not yet ready to discuss their situation in a group meeting type situation. “It is an informal, safe, non-judgemental place where people can come and have a cup of tea and a chat,” she said. McKenna had planned to meet with the Ministry of Social Development and schools around the district to make people aware of what the group does and to pass their details onto anyone that could benefit from the group. The group has been able to expand in the Christchurch Men’s Prison with their posters. McKenna said with winter making it tricky for a number of people from Methven to get to meetings in the evening, they would be trialling holding the meetings at 10.30am. They will still be held at the BASE Youthcentre from 10.30am every fortnight on a Friday, starting this coming Friday.

Failed mission Rocket Lab is working closely with the US Federal Aviation Administration to find out why it lost the rocket carrying seven small satellites during yesterday’s launch on the East Coast. It lost the rocket during its latest launch off the Mahia Peninsula. Seven satellites from Japan, the US and the UK lifted off around 9.20am – a day earlier than planned because of bad weather due later this week. The company’s founder Peter Beck is apologising to the satellite owners, after the problem with the rocket became obvious just four minutes into the flight. He said the incident is a reminder that space launches can be unforgiving but he says the issue will be rectified and the rocket will be back on the launch pad as soon as possible. - RNZ

PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 040320-JPM-0014 PILLARS founder Verna McFelin, who set the groundwork for groups like this, spoke at the launch of the group about what the organisation she founded more than 30 years ago does around supporting families and children impacted by having at least one parent in the corrections system. “We know on any one day there are around 23,000 children nationwide that have at least one parent in prison,” she said. McFelin said those children are 10 times more likely to end up in prison than other children, often experience mental health issues and do not speak about the experience of having a parent in prison for fear of being bullied and ostracised. She said the impact of having a parent in the corrections system can start right from the point of the arrest and for that reason PILLARS is currently working with police in North Canterbury around protocols for what to do when children are present when they are arresting someone.

“I spoke with my 40-year-old daughter the other day, she was eight or 10 at the time of my husband’s arrest and she hid under the bed and I had to drag her from under there,” she said. “When talking to her about it she couldn’t remember it at all, she had wiped it from her mind and it is traumatic.” PILLARS also runs a mentoring programme with children of prisoners, with volunteer mentors pairing up with the children for a minimum of one year to help try and break the cycle of children of prisoners being more likely to end up in prison themselves. “We have had 2000 children through the mentoring programme and, so far, only four have ever come to the attention of the police,” she said. “The mentors have to sign on for a minimum of a year, but they average around three-and-a-half years because they love those kids.” PILLARS also runs a number of services in corrections facilities across the country for helping

parents on the inside learn best how to connect with their children on visits. There is also a helpline available that provides support and advice, and a website for children to use that walks them through a prison and answers any questions they may have about it. The organisation also conducted a large-scale survey in the early 2010s and from that has developed a number of resources, including a best practice manual and a number of toolkits for professionals on how to deal with families and children with a family member in prison. “We have a school toolkit that can equip teachers for how to deal with children that have a parent in prison,” she said. “We also have one for lawyers. “There is also a checklist for doctors and health professionals as we have often found that needs of the children are not being met when they are in situations like this and we advocate them getting full health checkups.”

Living with a rare disorder When a child has a rare disorder, the search for a diagnosis is often long and filled with anguish. Currently the Rare Disorders NZ organisation is petitioning parliament to make the 300,000 families affected by rare disorders a health priority. Reporter Sue Newman talks to Alanna Peck whose son Lachlan has 22q11.2 deletion syndrome about the struggle to find a diagnosis for her child.

W

hen their third child, Lachlan was born, Alanna and Russell Peck felt something wasn’t right. They were concerned, but the health professionals were not. They pushed their concerns aside and got on with life as a three-child family. But the feeling that something was wrong with Lachlan remained. He was a fussy eater, reacted differently to sensory stimulation and in spite of passing his newborn hearing test, he was not responding to sound. He also had a partial cleft palate and unlike their daughters, Charlotte and Chloe, he had widely spaced eyes. The months ticked by and Russell and Alana continued to ask questions, to search for the specialist who would provide them with answers. Lachlan failed a hearing test and they went down the path of appointments with ear nose and throat specialists. No-one had an answer to what was becoming a growing list of problems that plagued their baby. Alanna did what mothers often do, started blaming herself, but blame didn’t provide answers. “A lot of mum guilt came out. I blamed myself because I’d had the flu during my pregnancy and I’d also had to have my tonsils out,” she said. They consulted one expert after another. Lachlan turned one, then two. Autism became a tentative diagnosis, but there were no clear answers. “I’d been told I was a paranoid mum, but one specialist said, no, you’re a wonderful parent.” That was a huge confidence boost, Alanna said. And finally a diagnosis. “Our new ENT told us he believed Lachlan had 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and that he’d like to refer us to a geneticist. I sat there gobsmacked, but we had a blood test done, it was confirmed and suddenly everything made sense.” That was a turning point in Lachlan’s health journey. After more than two years of struggling to understand what was wrong with their child, Russell and Alanna had an answer. That answer, however, didn’t mean accessing the care they needed would be easy. “We kept feeling like we were failing our child and we had the guilt that comes with that,” Alanna said. Issues with his palate meant he struggled to form words but he learned to sign and communicate using an iPad speaker. At the suggestion of one of the

Lachlan Peck and mum Alanna working to create awareness of the barriers in the health system to finding treatment for children with a rare disease. PHOTO SUE NEWMAN030720-SN-0012 team of specialists, Alanna and Russell attended a 22q11.2 conference in Brisbane. That was a turning point, providing a wealth of information and support for his parents and the realisation that they were not alone in raising a child with a rare disease. They also found paediatrician Kerry Orlowski, who became a huge resource for information and support, Alanna said. “She is fantastic. I know now that if I’m not happy with the information I get then I need to push, to go further.” And that helped, when at the age of five, it came to having Lachlan’s cleft palate fixed. They were told the wait would be long but they believed he should not wait and were prepared to fund an offshore operation if that was the only option. They were saved from the trip to Sydney by a last-minute cancellation. Having that operation

changed Lachlan’s life. “He is now forming words, he can blow bubbles and he can blow out candles and put his head under water, he can do the things we all take for granted,” Alanna said. Life for Lachlan contains many unknowns. He looks a little different to other kids, with his wide spaced eyes and small nose, but they’re differences that are barely noticeable. His issues are hidden but he’s thriving. “We have a fantastic medical and therapy team and Lachlan’s going to school, he’s keeping up with his peers and he’s at his level for maths,” Alanna said. His condition 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, is second in numbers affected to Down Syndrome, but its rarely heard of. In some people the symptoms may be so slight they are unaware they have the syndrome. With the knowledge she’s

gained over the past three years, Alanna has now become an information resource on 22q11.2 for doctors. It’s a role she’s happy to take on, knowing she’ll be helping other families in the same situation. She knows Lachlan will continue to have health issues and now knows the answers and help will come by asking questions, pushing for answers and by not giving up. And that’s the best advice she can give to other parents who may have a child with undiagnosed health issues, she said. “We live in a country where the health system should be accessible so don’t sit back. If the timeframe you’re given isn’t right, keep pushing until you get some answers. For us, it’s been a long journey but we’re on the right track.” The Peck family are supporters of a petition from Rare Disorders NZ. It is asking that the 300,000

families affected by rare disorders be made a health priority. Despite the low prevalence of each rare disorder, collectively they affect many families with one in 17 people living with a rare health condition. There are 140 support groups for people with rare disorders and Rare Disorders NZ is calling for the immediate establishment of a New Zealand National Rare Disorder framework to bring New Zealand into line with other counties. 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a genetic syndrome caused by the deletion of a small segment of the long arm chromosome 22. It has more than 180 physical and behavioural features and can affect every body system. It is detected by genetic testing from a blood sample. It can be apparent at birth but it may go unnoticed until later in life.

■■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Our district councillors hit the road By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s district councillors hit the road last week and went on tour, travelling the highways and byways of the district, checking out work projects with staff providing an update on work that had been completed and work that was under way. It was a day that provided some great learning opportunities, councillor Diane Rawlinson said. She’s a second-term councillor and said it was great to get an on-site update on projects that had been under way at the last visit, with the bonus of gaining a greater understanding of new work and areas where there were issues the council would need to deal with. Having senior staff on board meant councillors were able to ask questions and that added real value to the day, she said. For Rawlinson, one of the highlights was a visit to the Staveley Campsite where caretaker Genevieve de Spa explained the work under way using council biodiversity grant funds for remnant beach forest restoration and for protection work in the Staveley Forest. “I was really impressed with the compost bins she had built using branches pruned from trees trimmed to create tracks behind the campsite buildings,” she said. The bus tour travelled from the Ashburton cemetery extension to the Ashburton Airport and then to check out Fulton Hogan’s shingle plant at Lake Hood. Included in the tour were several water treatment plants, the Mt Somers swimming pool and a visit to the Opuke Hot Pools development in Methven. Currently the balance stands at $61,500, including $30,000 raised from a winter ball and was boosted by ongoing donations from Altrusa Ashburton. “It’s providing support for our community that doesn’t exist anywhere else. As a community, we’re very lucky,” Wood said.

OUR VIEW

Matt Markham

EDITOR

Heart of the community

T

here’s something quite polarising about getting out and about on a Saturday and engaging in a little bit of sport watching to help fill in the day. It’s a community event, in every sense of the term – with all different walks of life coming together to enjoy a common interest. It’s one of the only places you’ll find all variations of emotion and passion wrapped up in one. People cheer, people moan and people laugh. A true blue Kiwi pastime, that everyone can enjoy. What I always find interesting about such events is looking around and seeing people from all corners of our community, coming together in a social setting. Outside of a club rugby game on a Saturday afternoon, a netball match up at the EA Networks Centre or at the packed Ashburton Domain for junior football on a Saturday morning, these people wouldn’t normally socialise together at all. But sport is the common factor that brings everyone together and for just a few hours it doesn’t matter whether you’re the richest person in the district, a farmer or a businessman – equality is evident. This district does the Saturday sporting routine well. You can guarantee that if you make your way to any sporting ground around our district that there will be people there watching and supporting. A lot are there because of family, but many are also there because of a passion for the sport being played, or a passion for the clubs or groups involved. It’s important we don’t lose this element of life. It’s a crucial part of any community and one which needs to remain a solid staple in people’s weekend routines. I looked around the Ashburton Domain on Saturday and then again at Hampstead for club rugby in the afternoon and it was all smiles. Everyone was happy to be out and about and enjoying watching live sport. Those smiles, that’s what it’s all about.

YOUR VIEW

It is vital we get our border processes right I

t is completely understandable that New Zealanders have felt badly let down by this Government with regard to the serious lapses in our quarantine system that have come to light over the past few weeks. Our entire population has made huge sacrifices to get to where we were, having eliminated Covid-19 from our communities by diligently sticking to the requirements of lockdown. Thousands of people have lost job as businesses have failed due to the enforced shutdown and many more are hanging on by a thread, relying on wage subsidies to keep their staff paid for now. During lockdown we sacrificed our freedoms to the extent that close family members were unable to be with their loved ones in their final days or to gather to grieve for them on their passing. We made these sacrifices as individuals and as communities in order to stop the spread of the virus and having done so, there can be absolutely no tolerance

for slip-ups at our borders. A recent review into New Zealand’s managed isolation facilities highlighted a number of shortcomings in the way the system was operating. One of these was a lack of information for those returning to New Zealand about the requirement for them to enter managed isolation for 14 days upon arrival with some returning citizens and residents apparently unaware of what was expected of them until they got off the plane here. The Government needs to ensure that individuals intending to return to New Zealand are given clear instructions beforehand

about what is required in terms of managed isolation once they get here. The Government also appears to be struggling to obtain the data it needs to plan to ensure sufficient places are available and resourcing is in place to adequately manage those returning and needing to be placed in managed isolation or quarantine. The Immigration Minister Ian Lees-Galloway has admitted under questioning that his department isn’t even keeping track of how many foreign citizens it has allowed to enter New Zealand under the ‘essential other worker’ border closure exemption. The Minister stated that it would take too much effort to find out the exact number, and it was not in the public interest for him to do so. It is alarming to think that in the current situation Mr Lees-Galloway and the Government don’t have precise figures on the number of people who are entering New Zealand under

any type of visa. Other concerns raised around the management of our border processes include the lack of masks being used on flights, in airports and in buses when new arrivals are being transported to managed isolation, and a lack of consistency in terms of processes across managed isolation facilities. New Zealand needs strong, secure and competent border procedures to keep us all safe from another Covid-19 outbreak, and to allow us to progressively re-open our tourism and export education industries when it is safe. We cannot afford any further slip-ups that put these things in jeopardy. The perfect setting for Saturday afternoon rugby: A good crowd looks on as Hampstead secure their own ball from the scrum.

Relentless Rakaia make statement By Adam Burns

Adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A ruthless Rakaia outfit put their Watters Cup rivals on notice after flogging a young Celtic team at the weekend. The visitors put on a superb eight-try display as they romped to a 54-20 hammering of the green machine on Saturday, which well and truly cements the club’s credentials for a successful Cup defence. There is plenty of water to go under the bridge, but the team were in a merciless mood all over the park at Celtic. Methven meanwhile maintained their unbeaten start to the season, bagging another five competition points at Hampstead with a 25-5 victory which included a hat-trick to halfback, Tyler Blackburn. It will be no surprise if the weekend’s two senior victors again find themselves at the business end next month. If ever there was an omen, Celtic knocking on from the kickoff to put Rakaia hot on attack certainly encapsulated what was to follow. Rakaia were on the board a few minutes later when halfback Cory Sinclair pinched one from the base of the ruck after a barrage of phases on Celtic’s line. Celtic missed an opportunity for points when Junior Titi Esau hit the uprights from 35 metres out, however Rakaia were pinged near their 22 a minute later for being offside with Esau making no mistake. Rakaia’s superior size and power began to bend Celtic’s defensive line, and by the 15th minute they had scored again following a loping run from wing Raitube Vasurakuta, who handed off to an unmarked Inoke Tonga in support. Celtic’s inexperience was ex-

posed minutes later after one of their players opted to run the ball out from their in-goal – the resulting five-metre scrum leading to a try to first five Andrew Veint, who darted through a gap near the base. Down 21-3 with a quarter of the game gone, Celtic who were being outgunned in the possession and territory stakes took any opportunity for points as Esau added another penalty in the 26th minute. Minutes later and Rakaia were again on the charge with Seta Koroitamana – who had been an ongoing headache for the Celtic defenders – popped up at first receiver before the imposing No. 8 bushed off a tackle to ease through and score near the left hand upright. Celtic enjoyed constructive periods of play, however Rakaia were staunch on defence as the home team struggled to capitalise on the opportunities afforded them. Rakaia meanwhile were moving upfield effortlessly and with Celtic’s set piece constantly under threat, their defenders began to tire. Celtic were not helped by their lineout which was a cause for concern all afternoon. Rakaia were not done as halftime approached as blindside flanker Evan Blyth finished off another foray on Celtic’s line five metres in from touch after earlier bursting through the ruck to get his side on the front foot. A Celtic lineout drive from a penalty touchfinder which resulted in a turnover summed up the half for the home side as Rakaia swaggered into halftime up 35-6. It did not get much better for Celtic early in the second half as Rakaia turned the switch with their big men refusing to die in the tackle as they got their second phase going.

Tyler Blackburn put in a superb day at the office for Methven on Saturday, capping a fine performance with three tries. PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 040720-HM-0837

Hooker Garth Fechney scored after a ferocious period of intent from Rakaia before Lepani Seitava also got among the scoring. While Rakaia were relentless with ball in hand, their defence was equally as fierce. They crossed the half-ton around the 60th minute after Celtic’s ball was ripped away from a ruck near the halfway line before the ball popped out to an unmarked Raitube who hared 40 metres down the left wing. Celtic hung in there during the last quarter of the game, and even scored a silky try themselves. First five Nathan McCloy delivered a pinpoint crosskick across field which was seized by replacement Nick McCain on the right flank who sent an inside ball to fullback Cameron Butler who was following up on his inside. McCain himself crashed over for a late consolation try for Celtic to finish a productive day after earlier coaching the Celtic women.

After a rusty performance the week earlier against a passionate Celtic side, Methven tasked themselves with playing a more clinical game the second time around, against a Hampstead team playing at home, and while there were moments of them being a welloiled machine Saturday’s match struggled to get any real momentum happening through an incredibly high number of penalties from both sides. Ruben Early returned to the starting line-up for Methven and made a difference in the No.10 jumper. He put his side in front after 10 minutes with a decent penalty, but that was to be it for the next 20 minutes as the two sides traded blows. Blackburn, who produced another of his typically solid performances, was nippy around the base of the ruck and took his opportunity in the 31st moment and pierced his way through to score. Ten minutes later he produced

the same kind of effort to grab his second and Methven went into the break with a 15-0 lead. Hampstead were never out of the match – their strong ball-carrying abilities kept them right in the hunt throughout and they threw everything they had, and more, at the Methven defence. A Manasa Bari try shortly after half time threatened to see the floodgates open, but Hampstead kept coming at their visitors but ill-discipline haunted them throughout the match. When Blackburn grabbed his third for the day – again with a deft dab from behind a ruck – it was game over as Methven extended their lead to 25-0. Hampstead did gain a late consolation try through Taumaoe Touli but it was too little too late by that point. For Hampstead Kenny Faalavaa’u had a strong game at halfback while Elama Touli got himself involved in everything, and the experienced Manase Nonu showed his skill set is still there with a solid display in the midfield. Blackburn was a standout for Methven with his option-taking very much on point. Up front Mitch Pannett and Andrew Henderson both had strong games while Luke Gilbert was again a workhorse for the entire match. Methven’s strong ball carriers will send them deep into the competition, there’s no doubt about it with players like Bari, Matt Stone and Tiger Holmes all looking the goods, but continuity will be what’s demanded for this week by coaches Grant Breach and Simon Fleetwood. They head to Hinds this week to take on Southern in a top-ofthe-table clash, while life doesn’t get any easier for Hampstead who will travel out to Rakaia for their last game of pool play.

‘Irritated’ Green turns it on for the Warriors

Will Jordan dots down for the first of his two tries for the Crusaders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night.

■■RUGBY

Crusaders finish over the top The Crusaders have run away with a 40-20 win over the Highlanders in Dunedin to move to the top of the Super Rugby Aotearoa standings. The defending Super Rugby champions scored four unanswered tries in the second-half, after trailing 17-14 at halftime. Two of the tries came in the last five minutes to flatter the Crusaders who were pushed by the Highlanders in a typically tightly fought southern derby. Young winger Will Jordan and

flanker Tom Christie each scored twice for the Crusaders, while replacement back Sevu Reece also dotted down to give the visitors a bonus point. Crusaders captain Codie Taylor has hailed their halftime team talk for their change in fortunes. “The messages at halftime were really crucial for us to change the game in the second-half,” Taylor said. “We tried to play a bit too much in the first and our discipline let us down.

“We just knew that if we started to be a bit more direct and earn the right to go through them and then play wide that opportunities would come. “I’m just really happy with the boys’ execution in the second-half.” The Crusaders will play the Blues next week in a top of the table showdown. “We’re going to go back home and play a really good Blues side that have a lot of confidence and so they should because they’re

playing bloody good footy,” Taylor said. The Highlanders are seven points further back in third place and their captain Aaron Smith says the Crusaders clinicalness was the difference. “Their ability to hold the ball, build pressure and score points got us in the end,” Smith said. “I thought we put them under a lot of pressure in that first half. We took our opportunities, but we didn’t quite nail ours in the second-half.”

Dixon goes two-from-two in IndyCars New Zealand’s Scott Dixon has continued his perfect start to the Indy Car season, winning the latest race in Indiana. The five-time series champion came from seventh on the grid to take the chequered flag yesterday and make it back-to-back victories in the opening two rounds. Dixon says it’s too early to start talking about his overall title chances, but he was pleased to have made amends for making a mistake in qualifying. “So good to be racing here again at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” Dixon said. “We’ve had so many runner-up spots here on the road course. “We got lucky. The strategy, the team just nailed it. “We got lucky with that caution. But as soon as we got the balance right, the PNC Bank No. 9 just checked out.” Dixon benefited from a well-timed

caution period near the midway point of the race and then drove away to dominate race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, winning by an event-record 19.9469 seconds in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. It marked the first victory in this event for Dixon, who had finished second in this race for the last three years. The result was the 48th career Indy Car victory for Dixon, who is now just four wins behind Mario Andretti for No. 2 on the all-time series list. Graham Rahal finished second in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda after making just two pit stops, one fewer than Dixon and the other contenders. Simon Pagenaud rebounded from a tough qualifying session, jumping from a 20th starting spot to finish third in the No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet.

Blake Green felt he had a point to prove after being publicly dumped by Warriors owner Mark Robinson, just a couple of days out from their NRL match against the Brisbane Broncos. The veteran halfback found out through media that the Warriors wouldn’t be re-signing him for the 2021 season. Green responded by leading the Warriors to a come-from-behind 26-16 win over the Broncos in Gosford, with regular skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck unavailable due to suspension. He stood up in the absence of halves partner Kodi Nikorima, who was forced off the field early in the first half with concussion, guiding the Warriors around the park with a clever kicking game, highlighted by a booming 40/20. “I didn’t leave my room yesterday to be honest,” Green said after the match. “I had two points to get and a game to win for my footy team so I put it to the side. “It irritated me a little bit but the club’s made a decision and I can’t do anything about that, so I’ll just keep playing my role in the footy team and do as best I can. “I’m really proud of what I’ve done since I came to the footy club. “My first year here [2018] was the first time we made the finals in seven years so that team’s been ... it’s not the same footy team, we haven’t got the same coach, it’s been changing a lot. “I gave everything I had to the club and I’ll continue to do so. “I get along really well with the playing group, there’s some fantastic people there. “It is what it is.” Interim Warriors coach Todd Payten conceded the timing of Robinson’s comments weren’t great, but has hailed Green’s response. “You know he’s had a really tough week. “I can’t commend him highly enough about his contribution to this club and the way he took the week on,” Payten said. “I spoke to him more than once and he was upset and the way he threw himself into the week and the way he performed and dragged the team with him tonight is just a testament to him, his family and the way he goes about his business.” The 33-year-old has no plans to hang up the boots. “I love footy. “I still want to keep playing. “Hopefully I can be of some use to someone,” Green said. “We’ll see how the next couple of days plays out. “Obviously the fallout from a few things that happened this week, hopefully something comes up.”

Richards notches century Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards brought up his first century of training wins in New Zealand in his own right after Bak Da Master scored in the first race at Awapuni on Saturday. Left stranded on 99 wins before the Covid lockdown, Bak Da Master was his first runner since and delivered with a well-timed run under rider Michael Roustoby in the 1550 metre contest. It is the second time Richards has topped the 100-win mark after achieving the feat in the 2015/16 season. “It’s always good to tick off a milestone like this,” Richards said. “It’s a big team effort from everyone concerned. It’s also nice to do it with a horse like Bak Da Master as he’s a jumper who needs a fair bit of work. “Michael Roustoby is a part of our team; he rides a lot of work and provides good feedback and the like so it’s great that we can support people like him who are important to our overall business.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Being in charge requires a variety of qualities. Knowing which is needed, and when, is a skill in and of itself. Today you’ll employ masterly powers of discernment. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’re not about to ask the crowd, “How do you like me now?” because you were never doing it for them. You will, however, dig deeper into your own soul and pose that question. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): What a feeling! Your strategy is working, and momentum is building. Your goal will move as rapidly toward you as you are moving toward it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Shadows tell you where the light is being blocked. If you want to get rid of the shadow, you don’t try and move the shadow; you move yourself. Find the light again. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): As an event draws near, you wonder if you’ll ever feel ready. Maybe not. It’s a good thing that readiness is irrelevant in acts of inevitability. Once you jump in, you are at the whims of the fall. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Throw some compassion back to your former self. Sympathise with the you who has been in difficult positions. With a soft heart, you’ll have few regrets, and the ones you do have will not carry much weight. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Twice-told tales change in the telling. Popular stories are told not twice but hundreds of times. The wise listener keeps an open mind, listening through the filters of fiction and metaphor instead of fact. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Today’s cosmic boon is a gift for enjoying yourself, and it will work for others, too. What’s best for you will be what’s best for everyone around you today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It’s a wonderful thing to find out that you need far less to live and enjoy yourself than you think. Life doesn’t have to give you a loss in order for you to come to the conclusion that you want to live lighter. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Which is needed most, courage or tact? Both take a great deal of energy. Tact takes more. In fact, in today’s case, tact may be the most courageous move of all. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Some of the ways you see yourself are well-supported, as they align with your talents and roles. Other identity markers are rather arbitrary, and you can change them at any point if you want to. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There’s a version of you that was in a relationship long ago. Now you are a new version and the relationship is in the process of updating to accommodate the change. Hold on.

SENIORS HELD TO A DRAW

It may not have been the maximum returns they were after, but Mid Canterbury United’s senior outfit were forced to bank the competition point. United were held to a 1-all draw by Parklands in Christchurch on Saturday, after a dramatic second spell in the Canterbury Championship League. The Mid Cantabrians may see it as an opportunity missed after a

late penalty attempt was snuffed out by Parklands striker Ben Robson in goal. Robson was forced to the back after keeper Josh Suzana was sent off with 10 minutes remaining. Despite the deadlock it gets United’s CCL campaign moving again after two consecutive defeats. While the side may be resigned to the bottom of the ladder after five rounds, the group are clearly not far off.

A first half strike to Luciano Drudi put the visitors in the box seat as United held a 1-0 lead by the interval. Parklands responded in the second half with an equaliser courtesy of a header from captain Kane Kilbride before Robson’s late-game heroics denied Mid Canterbury. The reserves continued their improvement across the season with a 2-all draw against Parklands to claim their first competi-

tion point of the season. Goals were scored by Parker Bradford and Juan Stimolo for United. It was a strong weekend for Mid Canterbury football in general, with the senior sides unbeaten following Saturday’s action. Methven extended their lead at the top of the division 2 standings following a 4-2 win at home over Parklands. Also cementing their frontrunner status further was Mid

Canterbury in division 4 with a decisive 4-1 victory thumping of Waimakariri at the Ashburton Domain. Nic Ross scored a brace for the hosts before strikes from Oskar McLauchlan and Ben Chute sealed proceedings. Methven also earned a point in division 6 following a goal-less stalemate in Rolleston in division 6 to cap a weekend where no Mid Canterbury senior side went home empty handed.
