Sharplin Falls shovel-ready soon By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
A new track to Sharplin Falls will be shovel-ready by September if the Mt Somers Walkway Society has its way. President Charles Ross said the organisation still needed to jump through a few hoops prior to submitting its proposal to the Department of Conservation, but he was confident that the approval would come through. A one-kilometre track design, and route, earthquake risk assessment and bridge site surveys had all been conducted. The society was now waiting for its consultant environmental scientist Fred Overmars of Nelson to finalise his assessment of environmental effects, and bring all the elements together so the submission could be put to the department. Overmars would also be assisting with future steps such as getting building consent for the
bridges and consultation with iwi. Ross said Overmars had spent three days at the site last weekend, examining the environmental effects. So far the society had spent $40,000 on the project that it had raised itself, and expected the remaining cost to be about $260,000. It expected traditional sources of funding, such as the Lion and Ashburton Foundation Trust, had been affected by the pandemic, so it would also be looking at other potential funders, such as the Provincial Growth Fund and government grants. Ross said walkways in the area were proving more popular than ever with Cantabrians post lockdown. “A lot of people are getting into the hills at the moment, even though it’s a colder time of year,” he said.

And to have the Sharplin Falls access reinstated, after it was shut about five years ago by the
Canterbury earthquakes, would be fantastic. The walk was particularly valued for being a short
track with great scenery. Past president Barry Austin said it had been good to get Overmars on site recently, alongside track builders and Fulton Hogan staff, who would help with bridge abutments. He said the two bridges would each be 34 metres long, made in Ashburton and trucked up to the area before being airlifted in half segments.
Local MPs not in support of regularly armed police By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
The police’s trial of armed response teams have attracted criticism from all corners of the country, and Rangitata’s two MPs are united in their views that police should not be regularly armed. Both Labour list MP, based in Rangitata, Jo Luxton and Rangitata and National MP Andrew Falloon, say they have concerns over the general arming of police, however Falloon indicated he believes there may be a role for the armed response teams. Luxton said, as an advocate in Parliament for Mid Canterbury, she shares the concerns of families over the general arming of our police force. “Being part of the 13-strong Labour Maori caucus, we have used our collective voice to publicly make clear to the police commissioner that we totally oppose this move on behalf of our communities, as do Police Minister Stuart Nash and Prime Minister Jacinda

“New Zealand has seen a sharp increase in new style gangs, many copying gangs in Australia. A ready resort to extreme violence has been a common factor with the rise in those gangs,” he said. “We have seen reports of innocent people gunned down on their doorstep and in their homes, along with a number of apparent executions of gang members and associates.” “The number of gang members has skyrocketed over the past two and a half years. They now number over 7000, an increase of more than 30 per cent. There is no sign yet of that growth slowing.” Falloon said MPs do not direct police over their operations and, ultimately, any decision will rest with the police commissioner, Andrew Coster. “The Government can fund specific initiatives within police, but it is difficult to see how, under section 16 of the Policing Act which legislates the independence of the police commissioner,
it could direct police to not institute such units,” he said. When asked if she is concerned we could move towards a more militarised police force should the ART trial be deemed successful, Luxton said she remains unchanged in her commitment to back local policemen and women in Ashburton in their day-to-day activities that ensure the streets are well-protected. “With the decision to deploy the ART trial independently made by the then commissioner of police, and not a government initiative, I’ll let my stance through the Maori caucus reflect my concerns, as I await the evaluation of the ART pilot later in June,” she said. The Green party issued a statement yesterday morning urging the police to rule out armed patrols following the death of American man George Floyd in police custody that has led to widespread protests in the United States and across the world.

Long-serving former cop reflects on protests and riots By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A former police officer, who served during the famous Springbok tour of 1981, has been reminded of life working during protests and riots with the ongoing unrest in America, but has also been reminded of racial bias within the police forces here. Pup Chamberlain said the images of large-scale protests and riots breaking out across the United States following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers had brought on flashbacks from his time working during the Springbok tour in 1981. “It (the Springbok tour) is definitely the closest thing we have had apart from maybe the Wharfie riots in the 1950s, but I definitely wasn’t around back then,” he said. Chamberlain said protests and riots present a challenging situation for police, having to stick with the Government stance on the issue, having to put their personal grievances aside. “The issues with the Springbok tour was 50 per cent of the population seemed to want the tour to go ahead and 50 per cent didn’t, and the Government took the view that it would go ahead,” he said. “If the police decided that they didn’t want it to well then we would be living in a police state.” Chamberlain said, as has been seen in America, there are always ‘idiots’ who take advantage of people’s right to protest to cause trouble. “With the Springbok tour the protesters had the right to march to the game but we had to stop them gaining access to the game and throwing bricks and bottles and damaging property and then, once the games were done, we had to stop the drunk rugby players assaulting the protesters on the way out,” he said. “As we are seeing in America,

there are idiots that are just there to cause damage to property, and to try and beat people and cops up and cause trouble.” Chamberlain said the issue of racial prejudice was something that was definitely present in the New Zealand Police, but not as bad as is being seen in America. Working through using the Treaty of Waitangi had meant big improvements in ensuring that Maori, and other minorities, voices were heard by the police, and that there was now a much better representation of proud Maori in the police force. Chamberlain said he was just as shocked as anyone at the footage of the police handling George Floyd, with one officer HALF YEARLY SALE keeping his knee pressed against his neck for nearly 10 minutes as he restrained him on the ground. “It was murder, there was no way it was not murder and there is no way you can condone that use of force,” he said. “I was in a lot of scraps in my 38 years (as a police officer) but there is no need to use that much for restraining someone and there were plenty of other officers there to help.”

Strong turn out for Pinkie By Heather Mackenzie
heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
Every year more than 600 women and 25 men die from breast cancer in New Zealand, and the Breast Cancer Foundation want to get that number to zero. Foundation national breast health educator Debra Leutenegger has been travelling around New Zealand with Pinkie the caravan, spreading the breast care awareness word to smaller communities and yesterday was Ashburton’s turn. The little pink caravan was parked up in Countdown North carpark, where visitors were given information packs along with advice and support if they needed it. Leutenegger and breast care nurse Alison Smith were pleased with the Ashburton turn out. There had been a steady stream of visitors from all age groups, asking a variety of questions, said Leutenegger.
“One lady had found a breast lump and wasn’t too sure what the next step should be. We directed her to her GP and told her not to wait until her next mammogram to get it looked at.” It wasn’t just older women stopping by to find out more, Leutenegger said they had talked to several younger women too. “Although we advise self-checking breasts from the age of 20, the younger people become aware of the practise the more normal it becomes and the more likely they are to do it regularly.” Pinkie is seen as the first step advice caravan at the top of the cliff rather than the stage-four ambulance at the bottom. The big takeaway message handed out to everybody was – if you find something unusual check it out and don’t wait. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, but only if it is caught early in stage

one or two. “Even if you are having regular mammograms it is still important to be checking for yourself as well. The mammogram is a snap shot on that day, not tomorrow.” In order to understand the symptoms of potential breast cancer the caravan is equipped with Bessie. Bessie is a life-like torso exhibiting visible signs of breast cancer including lumps, an inverted nipple, skin dimpling and an orange peel look, along with a changed shape. Smith said she understands the cost of GP visits, a busy life or fear

Travellers’ tales from years gone by
T
he previous traveller’s tale brings to mind another story, this time involving two young Kiwi fellows, one from the Mainland and the other from the North Island, who decided to go walkabout over the ditch. They had a great time, enjoyed meeting people, working when they had to and seeing some amazing scenery. They always found somewhere to stay. Near the end of their adventure one night they found themselves somewhat off the beaten track and were wondering where they might rest their weary heads that evening when they saw a homestead so they decided to make for it. It turned out to be a rather nice property with a substantial and very attractive dwelling, excellent

outbuildings and several very nice cars. After they knocked on the front door it was opened by a lady who greeted them and listened to their plight – they wondered if, in return for doing some work, they could perhaps stay at the property overnight. The lady said their arrival was very timely because there were a few little jobs, leaking taps etc which needed attention. They quickly took care of those and the lady said she was very
pleased and of course they could stay, but because she was a widow without family living on her own she felt it may not be proper for them to stay in the homestead, but they could bunk down in the barn. But before doing so she wanted to provide them with dinner. Dinner turned out to be a beautifully prepared meal accompanied by some fine wines produced nearby. The lady said she was so happy they had called in as it was an opportunity for her to host guests, something which didn’t happen often. Finally, they went to the barn which, as it turned out, was very comfortable guest accommodation. After a day’s work and a lovely meal they soon nodded off.
Thank you for your part in keeping our community safe There’s still a lot of challenges ahead of us. Local businesses need our support to recover. Some in our community will be left feeling vulnerable or isolated and it’s important we look out for one another. As we’ve moved through this difficult time it’s been a privilege to serve you as your local MP. If you, your neighbour, friends or family need help, please get in touch.

may be contributing factors to putting it off, but putting it off is not a good idea. “GPs would far rather you go to them with what turns out to be a nothing, rather than ignore what turns out to be a something.” Women are renowned for putting everybody’s needs ahead of their own, but as Leutenegger points out, ignoring a breast lump could lead to them not being around at all. When she’s not roaming the countryside in Pinkie, Leutenegger, in her role of national breast health
educator, is attending events and trade shows all over New Zealand. “Getting the breast care message out to the community is vital. Women don’t always know how to carry out proper examination or even where breast tissue begins and ends, so it is our job to help.” According to foundation statistics only 70 per cent of women attend their free mammogram, so Leutenegger and her team are out and about trying to reach the missing 30 per cent. “Recently a lady asked me what a mammogram was as she had never heard of it. We made some phone calls and someone from the mammogram register gave her a call.” “The foundation is a charity funded by the generosity of New Zealanders, so it is nice for us to be out in these smaller communities giving back to the very people who help us exist.”
Guardian motoring correspondent, Bernard Egan is well known around these parts. Over the next few weeks, he’s agreed to share with us some of his tales from yesteryear. Some will be his own telling while others will come directly, or indirectly from others. The whole truth of some, can be left for public opinion. Readers are invited to share tales with Bernard by emailing geegeeber@gmail.com Next morning after a hearty breakfast they were on their way. After getting back to New Zealand they returned to their homes but kept in touch, often mentioning the lovely property where they were made to feel so welcome. One day the chap from the Mainland phoned his friend up north and after the usual pleasantries said: “Would you mind if I ask you a personal question?” “Of course not,” was the response. “Well, I’m not sure how to put this but, that night we stayed at that lovely widow’s fabulous property did you, by any chance, get up during the night and go back over to the homestead?” The slightly embarrassed reply was: “Well, actually, yes I did”. “Not to put too fine a point on
it, did you and the lovely lady become sort of friendly.” A bit more embarrassed now: “Yes”. “So, when she asked your name did you actually give her my name?” Really embarrassed and a bit nervous now: “I know I shouldn’t have and I’ve often felt a bit guilty about it but, yes, I did, I’m sorry and I hope you’re not too upset about that.” The young fellow from the Mainland said, “no, I’m not upset and don’t feel guilty, I’m actually phoning to thank you.” “Really, but why?” “Thing is, the dear lady has passed away and left me the homestead, and everything that goes with it, including the classic car collection and the town house in Sydney.”

Call for witnesses in ute-tractor crash By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton Police are urging witness to come forward as they focus on building a picture of a crash between a ute and tractor that led to the death of a 69-year-old Ashburton man. Geoffrey Stoddart, 69, died following a collision involving a yel-
low Ford tractor and the Nissan Navara ute he was driving on the evening of May 26 on Maronan Road. Sergeant Gordon Narbey said they are seeking anyone who may have seen the accident between the vehicles, or who saw the yellow tractor in the build-up to the crash. Initial indications are that the

There is still one active case, which would be declared recovered at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms and 48 hours after their symptoms ended, director general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said at yesterday’s briefing. The combined total of confirmed and probable cases remains at 1504, the Ministry of Health said yesterday. The number of recovered cases is unchanged at 1481. – NZME
Review backs epilepsy drug An independent review has backed Pharmac’s decision to switch its epilepsy drug funding to a generic brand. Five deaths last year were suspected of being related to the brand switch, but this was not investigated as part of the review by Claro Law. It said it was not investigating the possibility Pharmac’s ‘sole supply’ decision caused or contributed to the deaths, as that it was a matter for the coroner. About 11,000 people, most with epilepsy but some with mental health conditions, began switching to a generic form of the drug lamotrigine, called Logem, last year. Claro Law found Pharmac’s processes were evidence-based, robust and of a high standard. But the review noted it would have been preferable if Pharmac had sought further input from its Pharmacological and Therapeutics Advisory Committee and had involved its consumer advisory group. – NZME

Dairy stops selling dolls A Dunedin dairy has removed golliwogs from its shelves after a backlash online. The move comes amid a series of protests around the world, sparked by the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of white police in Minneapolis, in the United States, last week. Willowbank Dairy had reportedly been selling golliwogs for six months, but this week removed them at the request of a group of students. Ready to get ploughing again By Heather Mackenzie
heather.m@theguardian.co.nz
It’s ploughing match season again. Although many events had to be put off due to the Coronavirus pandemic, thanks to the government relaxing rules around Covid-19 the Hinds and Methven ploughing matches have been given the green light. Hinds ploughing committee member Ian Lowe said ploughing matches in the Hinds area date back to 1948, Lowe said he has hosted the match on his farm since 1989. “To begin with I could rotate with four-or-five other farms in the district, but land use change to dairying has meant I am the only one left.” Lowe said even through the number of competitors has reduced over the years, the enthusiasm for the contests has not. “There are so many stories I could tell about past contests, the history out here is endless.” Lowe remembers times where the ground was so frozen it was almost impossible to get the plough in the ground. “That doesn’t really happen these days as the weather has changed quite a bit.” Lowe is full of admiration for
Competitive ploughing returns to Mid Canterbury again today. the 80-year-olds competing in the vintage tractor section and how they manage it. “It is a wonder that, at their age, they can even get up on a tractor, let alone turn in the quality of work they do.” Along with contestants from near and far, a few famous faces have occasionally popped in to prod furrows and yarn. Lowe said Willy Willett, the New Zealand plough committee president, called in a cou-
ple of years back and there was much elbow nudging and nervous smiles when world ploughing association chair Colin Millar cruised in to check out the action. He even did some judging for us, Lowe said. There are different classes running thoughout the day – silver plough, vintage, Young Farmers, and horse-drawn ploughs, but Lowe said what makes the judges award high marks remains the same.

“They are looking for a good, clean furrow, that has no straw or grass showing. One that has held together well as it has been turned over and, of course, they must all be straight.” The Methven-held competition is on today at 722 Mt Hutt Station Road, with the Hinds event set to start at 10.30am on June 13. Due to Covid-19 alert rules Lowe said everyone is asked to bring their own food.

The man charged with the death of Rakaia dairy farm worker Tony Grant Waldron has pleaded not guilty. Joshua Dylan Morris-Bamber appeared in the Christchurch High Court via video-link yesterday. Morris-Bamber was charged with the murder two weeks after the killing. His trial has been set down for November 2 this year, and he is next set to appear in court on July 10. Waldron, who was aged 29 at the time of his death, and a father of two, was found dead in his bed by a work colleague on the morning of September 18, 2019 after he had failed to turn up for work. The police investigation, which was led by detective senior sergeant Richard Quested, saw officers and specialist search teams scouring effluent and irrigation ponds near to the Gardiners Road address and also spending considerable time completing searches in both the Rakaia and Selwyn river beds.

Name-calling ‘petty’ – Falloon By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said he has seen better behaviour among children in primary schools than he saw in Parliament this week. Falloon was commenting following MPs tossing personal insults and David Seymour being kicked out of Parliament’s Debating Chamber on Thursday. Seymour had called Winston Peters “grandpa” after Peters referred to the ACT leader as “sunshine” during Question Time. After Seymour called out to the Deputy Prime Minister to answer his question, over why he had failed to persuade the Prime Minister to move to Covid-19 Alert Level 1 immediately, Peters said “I’ll answer the question, sunshine, when I get to it, all right”. Speaker Trevor Mallard then issued a grinning rebuke to Peters, saying he knew the word “sunshine” was “a term of endearment”, but that it was not appropriate for Parliament. However, Peters’ colleague Tracey Martin objected when Seymour responded with “it’s alright, grandpa”, saying it was ageist. Seymour believed “grandpa” was also a term of endearment,
National MP Brett Hudson asks Police Minister Stuart Nash a question in Parliament on Thursday. Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is seated behind him to the left. PHOTO SUPPLIED but his defence fell on deaf ears, and Mallard scrapped Seymour’s question as punishment and kicked him out. Later Labour MP Stuart Nash threw “bloody loser” across the
House, with no consequences. The insult followed National MP Nick Smith heckling the Police Minister, taunting him with “soft on gangs” as Nash answered a question from National MP Brett
Hudson on whether he expected police to enforce rules relating to Covid-19 alert levels. The heckling prompted Nash to pause part-way through his answer and say “Sorry Dr
Be quick!
Smith? Oh, turn it up, you bloody loser”. Hudson followed up with a question referring to his concern that police were not warning gang members who breached Covid-19 rules, to which Nash responded that police had no record of any such reports or complaints being made. The insults capped off an animated week in Parliament as new National leader Todd Muller settles into the job and the Opposition finds its feet. Falloon was right amongst the fray, seated behind Hudson, but was taking no joy in the proceedings. “I can understand why people think politicians behave like children. I’ve seen better behaviour from kids at primary school, and Thursday in Parliament was unfortunately another example of that,” Falloon said. “I’ve never understood some of the petty name-calling that happens in the debating chamber. People send us to Parliament to do a job representing our community and doing our best for New Zealand. That’s particularly true at a time like now when Kiwis up and down the country are losing their jobs and businesses are suffering,” he added.

Beyond the Great Ocean Road
The Tower Hill was declared in 1892 as Victoria’s first national park.
T
he Great Ocean Road and Beyond tour deftly unwraps so many inland bonbons, scattered across Southern Australia. As we tracked away from the coast, enroute to Adelaide, one of our last Victorian stops was at Koroit, an evocative rural town, bracketed in rolling green pastures on the northern slopes of the extinct volcano, Tower Hill. Lauded for its potatoes, onions and dairying, Koroit is steeped in Irish settler

Hundreds of Irish people flocked there following the potato famine in the 1850s. It’s a sturdy town evoking a sense of stately self-importance. But the prize draw is Tower Hill, a volcanic maar
crater with a lake and layers of solidified volcanic ash, which was formed about 32,000 years ago. All around the crater, conical hills thrust upwards from the boggy ground, essentially forming islands that jut out of the shallow, swampy lake. In 1892, the site was declared as

Victoria’s first national park, and our group were enchanted by our visit to the wildlife reserve, expertly hosted and enlightened by an Aboriginal guide. The on-site natural history centre displays artefacts that were found in volcanic ash, indicating Aboriginal occupation at the time of the eruption 32,000 years ago. European settlers cleared much of the native vegetation for farming, yet since 1961, the reserve has been densely revegetated with hundreds of thousands of local species, as if the clock has been turned back. A central point of the reference that guided the revegetation programme was an 1855 painting by Eugene Von Guerard, depicting the layout of the park before it was denuded. Thanks, Eugene! Manna gum, blackwood, black wattle, swamp gum and drooping sheoak trees are threaded by inviting trails. The flora has subsequently encouraged the resplendent return of native fauna, abundant with hundreds of kangaroos, koalas, wombats, sugar gliders, echidnas, numerous waterbirds (including Cape Barren geese, musk ducks, spoonbills and chestnut teals) and emus. It was a thrill to explore. We also fine-tuned our boomerangthrowing skills, under the commanding, diplomatic tutelage of our guide. Alas, my boomerang didn’t come back. Tower Hill’s plethora of animal species and the stupendous setting is a wonderful place to learn about the Australian bush and the region’s indigenous history.

Tower Hill’s wildlife reserve is abundant with hundreds of kangaroos, koalas, wombats, sugar gliders, echidnas, numerous waterbirds and emus. Just a few kilometres from the South Australian border, that slices across the Glenelg River, we enjoyed a pub lunch stop at the languid little fishing village of Nelson before prowling north to Mount Gambier. South Australia’s second biggest city is a geological powerhouse, given what lies beneath. When volcanoes rocked the region over 5000 years ago and lava cooled, caves were formed, a beguiling array of sinkholes developed and spell-binding lakes established the limestone foundation of Mount Gambier. Despite being inland, the region is lustily billed as the Limestone Coast, in deference to its astounding subterranean limestone wonderland. Beneath Mount Gambier’s urban streets, experienced divers can explore a myriad of underground chambers, like the secret tunnels of Engelbrecht Cave, carefully weaving their way through an intricate maze of water-filled passages, while the world passes by overhead. The hero South Australian doctor, Richard Harris, who was at the centre of the successful rescue of the Thai football team, fine-tuned his equipment in Little Blue Lake in Mt Gambier, beloved by divers. Its bigger brother is Blue Lake, the poster-child for Mount Gambier, a remarkable volcanic crater lake, which changes colour. As our group observed, early each November, the lake’s steely grey-blue hue, which dominates the winter months, mysteriously changes to an intense cobalt blue almost overnight. The colouring remains until late February, when it gradually changes back to its more sombre and steely winter shade. It’s all due to the seasonal redistribution of tannins and calcium carbonate particles throughout the lake, apparently. Providing the city’s water supply, the
lake spans over 1.2km in length, over 800 metres in width and reaches a depth of over 75 metres. It’s a whopper. Need a leg-stretcher? You can wander around the rim of the lake along a 3.6km trail, or just lap it up from the lookout points. It’s a wondrous spectacle, that will fill your Instagram feed. Our group gazed longingly over this luminous masterpiece of nature. In addition to crater lakes, Mount Gambier’s wider area boasts over 50 waterladen sinkholes. The Umpherston Sinkhole (or the Sunken Garden) was once a typical limestone cave. Formed by the corrosion of limestone rocks by seawater waves, the sinkhole was naturally created when the chamber’s roof collapsed, creating a pockmark in the Earth. In 1886, the sinkhole was spectacularly transformed into a gigantic sunken garden by local farmer, James Umpherston, beautifying the gaping hole, thickly planting vegetation within it, from hydrangeas and luscious ferns to blazing flower beds and enormous hanging vines which could double as Jack’s beanstalk, garlanding the full depth of the hole. At ground level, you can gaze into this hidden Eden from the viewing platforms, before heading down into its wraparound glory, via the superbly constructed ramps and staircases. Open from dawn to dusk, and free to enter, if you happen to be here when the sun sets, you’ll notice that scores of resident possums descend on this tranquil garden for a furtive feed, under the floodlights. Wrapped in a beautifully maintained park, this historic sunken garden, which has been planted on a series of terraces reflects a bygone era, channelling a sense of Victoriana. Who knew a sinkhole could be so resplendent?
Receiving some inside knowledge from one of the guides at Tower Hill.

■■BANKING
TV3 sale imminent
FMA takes action against ANZ NZME ANZ is facing legal action from the financial markets regulator over allegations it sold credit card repayment insurance to customers who could never claim on it. The Financial Markets Authority has filed High Court proceedings against the bank over two main issues – that it sold duplicate insurance to some customers and failed to cancel policies for ineligible customers. In a statement the ANZ said it self-reported the issues to the FMA in June 2019 and had already compensated customers to the tune of $440k. But the bank also acknowledged it took too long to report the issues. Ben Kelleher, ANZ managing direct retail and business banking said it was very sorry for what had happened. “We actively review our processes and systems to try and identify issues that could impact our customers. Where we find problems, we work to fix them for our customers.” Credit card repayment insurance is a type of insurance which covers some or all of a person’s credit card repayments
in certain circumstances such as redundancy, bankruptcy, injury, illness or death. The FMA alleges the ANZ issued duplicate policies between April 2014 and November 2019 and then failed to cancel policies for ineligible customers between April 2014 and May 2018. It said the issues related back as far as 2001 but its claim reflected the introduction of the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 which came into force from April 2014. The regulator claims the ANZ contravened section 22 of the Act by making false and misleading representations about the cover of the policies. “The regulator is seeking dec-
larations of contravention of the Financial Markets Conduct Act, pecuniary penalties and costs.” The FMA said the bank identified the duplicate policy issue around September 2017 and the ineligible customer issue around May 2018. “ANZ did not disclose either issue to the FMA or Reserve Bank during their joint conduct and culture review of New Zealand’s retail banks from May to June 2018. The review requested that ANZ disclose “any work under way to remediate any identified issues where conduct by your firm has resulted in detrimental outcomes for customers.” The FMA says it was not notified by the ANZ of the issues un-
til June 2019. Nick Kynoch, general counsel at the FMA, said while the bank had undertaken remediation and self-reported the matter the case pointed to a failure of internal systems and controls resulting in customer harm over a significant period of time. “Self-reporting is expected, and is taken into account by the FMA when determining the appropriate regulatory outcome. In this instance, we felt it appropriate to put the matter before the courts. “ANZ sold a product that, for some customers, offered no benefit.” In a statement ANZ said it identified 390 customers that had more than one credit card repayment insurance policy and a further 439 customers who were ineligible to claim the insurance. It said the FMA’s proceedings related to 307 of those customers, with policies between April 2014 and September 2019. The bank said it had contacted all affected customers to apologise and compensate them for the issues which were unintentional and caused by human error and systems issues. It no longer sells the product.
An American television giant is in the box seat to buy the TV arm of MediaWorks – including TV3 – as the sale nears completion. Several sources have told the Herald that the business is set to be sold to Discovery Inc. Discovery has been active in the local market recently, last year picking up Top TV, which operates the Choice and HGTV channels in this market. MediaWorks would not deny or confirm the speculation. “The sale of TV is still progressing. We will update you when there is something to share,” a spokeswoman said. Discovery also has a close partnership with pay-TV broadcaster Sky, which airs the Discovery Channel among its suite of entertainment options. Founded in 1985, Discovery is a multi-billion-dollar mass media giant employing over 9000 around the world. In addition to the Discovery Channel, it also owns and operates Animal Planet, the Food Network and a range of other media properties. This comes off the back of MediaWorks’ announcement that it would be cutting 130 jobs in the radio and sales departments in response to the impact of Covid-19 on the business.

■■HONG KONG
Tiananmen ban defied AP Thousands of people in Hong Kong defied a police ban Thursday evening, breaking through barricades to hold a candlelight vigil on the 31st anniversary of China’s crushing of a democracy movement centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. With democracy snuffed out in the mainland, the focus has shifted increasingly to semi-autonomous Hong Kong, where authorities for the first time banned the annual vigil that remembers victims of the 1989 crackdown. Beijing is taking a tougher stance following months of anti-government protests last year, in what activists see as an accelerating erosion of the city’s rights and liberties. Earlier Thursday, the Hong Kong legislature passed a law making it a crime to disrespect China’s national anthem. Pro-democracy lawmakers had disrupted proceedings to try to prevent the vote. Despite the police ban, crowds poured into Victoria Park to light candles and observe a minute of silence. Many chanted “Democracy now”and “Stand for freedom, stand with Hong Kong”. While police played recordings warning people not to participate in the unauthorized gathering, they did little to stop people from entering the park. Authorities had cited the need for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic in barricading the sprawling park, but activists saw the outbreak as a convenient excuse. “If we don’t come out today, we don’t even know if we can still come out next year,” said participant Serena Cheung.
Black girls ‘expendable’ An actress has slammed the culture of Hollywood, which regards black actors as “expendable”. Amber Riley said, “The stories I’m reading about how white women are using their privilege and the fact that they are not fireable, something that I was told once on set after having my own complaint. They know that they are not fireable and they use that privilege to terrorise their counterparts. We were even told we were expendable. The coloured girls, the black girls, are expendable. I’m talking about the culture of Hollywood right now and how they treat black characters, black men, black women. I’m talking about the culture.” Participants gathered for a vigil to remember the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, despite permission for it being officially denied, at Victoria Park in Hong Kong. PHOTO AP Police said they made arrests in the city’s Mongkok district, where large crowds also rallied. When several protesters tried to block a road, officers rushed to detain them, using pepper spray and raising a blue flag to warn them to disperse or they would use force on the unauthorized gathering. On Twitter, they urged people not to gather in groups because of the coronavirus. After the vigil ended in Victoria Park, groups of protesters dressed in black carried flags that said, “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our times” as well as “Hong Kong Independence”. Hundreds and possibly thousands of people were killed
when tanks and troops moved in on Tiananmen Square the night of June 3-4, 1989, to break up weeks of student-led protests that had spread to other cities and were seen as a threat to Communist Party rule. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson offered the government’s standard defence of the 1989 crackdown. “The Chinese government has made a clear conclusion about the political disturbance that occurred in the late 1980s,” Zhao Lijian said. “The great achievements that we have achieved ... have fully demonstrated that the development path China has chosen is completely correct, which conforms to China’s na-
tional conditions and has won the sincere support of the Chinese people.” On Thursday, the square where thousands of students had gathered in 1989 was quiet and largely empty. Police and armoured vehicles stood guard on the vast space. Few pedestrians lined up at security checkpoints, where they had to show IDs to be allowed through as part of nationwide mass surveillance to prevent any commemoration of the event. As has become customary, many dissidents were placed under house arrest and their communications with the outside world cut off, according to rights groups.
■■AUSTRALIA
Court action against planned NSW protest RNZ NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian denied her Government had green-lit people to “flagrantly” disregard Covid-19 social distancing measures. She said a small protest request was placed with police earlier this week and said the surge in attendees prompted police to take the organisers to the Supreme Court. “This was because the protest could not guarantee adherence to the health orders,” she said. “We can’t afford to have an exception for anybody.” NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said the protest began with 50 people planning to go, but had ballooned out to more than 10,000 planning to attend. “The only options were for the protesters to cease their wish to protest, or for us to
take the matter to the Supreme Court,” he said. “We have commenced legal action on the basis of: We don’t believe the protest can be conducted in a safe way.” Fuller said Tuesday’s protest was a breach of health orders, after hundreds of people turned up at Sydney’s Martin Place to peacefully protest the treatment of Indigenous Australians. NSW coronavirus social distancing laws stipulate gatherings of more than 500 people are illegal. He said Saturday’s rally organisers and NSW police were unable to come to an agreement. NSW police said even if the Supreme Court allowed today’s rally, there would be a limit of 500 people. NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge said it was another “seriously unhelpful action from the
Protesters at Tuesday’s demonstration. PHOTO RNZ NSW police force”. He said he expected people would turn up to protest “no matter what the police say”. Hundreds of people marched through Sydney’s city on Tuesday night, calling for better treatment of Indigenous Australians, as protests continue across the United States over the death of George Floyd. NSW Police Minister David
Elliott criticised the march, calling it “not my sort of cause”, but he said it was out of his control. “Anybody who goes to a mass gathering during a pandemic is certifiably insane, they are nuts,” he said. State Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the decision to green-light a Black Lives Matter protest this weekend was “indefensible”. Perrottet said the “enormous sacrifices” of Australians obeying social-distancing laws should have been taken into consideration Elsewhere, police in South Australia issued an exemption to coronavirus restrictions to allow a Black Lives Matter protest to go ahead tomorrow. However, coronavirus case numbers in SA are significantly lower than NSW, which is Australia’s worst-afflicted and most populous state.
Friends star dies Friends star Mary Pat Gleason has died at the age of 70. The actress, who amassed over 100 acting credits, passed away on June 2 after a battle with uterine cancer and is survived by a “large, loving extended family”. Her nephew, John Brostrom said that she had previously beaten the disease in 2015 although she spent a month in hospital after it returned. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mary’s family had been unable to visit her in her final weeks, although Mary was moved to a friend’s home in April – where she remained until her death. John says that the tributes to the actress, show “how loved and respected she was in the Hollywood community”.
Chromatica outselling rest Lady Gaga’s Chromatica is outselling the rest of the top 20 albums in the UK chart put together. The album is currently on course to become the singer’s fourth chart-topping album in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company. Last week Gaga’s single Rain On Me, which she recorded with Ariana Grande, topped the singles chart and scored the biggest opening week for streaming numbers by an all-female collaboration. Chromatica has recorded 40,000 chart sales so far this week and has already become 2020’s fastest-selling vinyl album based on three days of sales.

Air NZ: Do the right thing, refund monies
A
ir New Zealand might just have to take this one on the chin and let it go. A business under stress due to effectively becoming irrelevant for nearly two months, there’s no surprise the national air carrier would want to ensure refunds from cancelled flights would be given back as credit, as opposed to refund, but that doesn’t necessarily make it right. Domestically, it makes sense –- in most cases – but international travel is where the waters get a little murky because there’s no end goal in sight there – who knows how long it will be before they’re able to start flying people to the other side of the world. Yet they’re holding this money effectively. It’s sitting in a stagnant account somewhere, not being used – potentially gaining a little interest through the course of time when it really should be going back into the pockets of the people from whom it come from in the first place. Travel anywhere, New Zealand or abroad, isn’t cheap and this at a time after people’s wallets have been hammered by the Covid-19 lockdown. Releasing this currently trapped cash would, I’m sure, be welcomed by all those currently suffering financially. Do that, as a sign of good faith, and there’s every likelihood that those people will return. Keep that money back and instead offer credit and there’s a chance they might not. Air New Zealand was part of a $900 million government bailout during the Covid-19 lockdown period. A financial boost to help them get through some of their darkest days as a business. But where did that $900 million indirectly come from? That’s right, the very same people from whom they are giving credit to for cancelled flights as opposed to offering a full refund. Seems a little odd, doesn’t it?

nd now we are in Covid-19 Level 2 although it seems like everyone thinks it’s Level One. So, are you feeling as confused about it all as I am? Should we socially distance or not, and how far? Do we sanitise our hands, do we wear masks and gloves, sanitise chairs and door handles or not? Even going shopping just adds to the confusion, with some shops going the whole hog, including QR codes for your Tracing app (whatever that is!) and some still requiring you to queue, with the ‘one-in-one-out’ policy. There seems to be no consistency to the suggested regulations and how they are interpreted at all. This is one of the reasons why Ashburton Methodists are not gathering for worship yet. Then, if we start comparing little old New Zealand with the rest of the big wide world we wonder how others can survive – with some countries ignoring Covid-19 alltogether and others with even more draconian measures than us. disorder on the streets (not to mention – no mask, no social distancing) all in an attempt to protest one person’s death, albeit, an unnecessary and cruel act. I find it hard to make sense of it all. Then there’s all the effort being put in by scientists, medics, politicians and many others in combating one nasty virus, while still many, many more than 21 deaths occur every year from alcohol,
smoking, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and the like and we just grin and bear it and think that is normal. So that’s why I am confused. Are you? May God help us in our confusion. Rev. Heather Kennedy is the minister at the Ashburton Methodist Parish

Touring our own backyard – what Kiwis really want to see W
hat an extraordinary feeling. Here I am with three weeks’ annual leave and no real reason to take it other than, like many companies, mine didn’t want it sitting on their books. I wasn’t even sure if I had three weeks owing but obediently filed for it as requested and here I am. To be honest it would have been more use to me later in the year or when the borders reopen but hey, I’m just happy to have a job. You say “jump”, I’ll reply “how high?” Three weeks eh. That’s a bit of a stretch. That’s a good bit of leave. What to do? But wait, one of the country’s largest renters of motorhomes has announced some bargain basement deals. From $35 a day or for the larger, flasher ones maybe $50 or $60. C’mon Kiwis, it’s time to discover your own backyard! Hell yes. Show me the way. I wondered what all the rental companies were going to do with the seemingly infinite number of vehicles sitting around in compounds up and down the country and usually hired by persons from abroad. Cue dramatic building, sweeping, symphonic, awakening, orchestral-style music.

PETE’S PERSPECTIVE
“You shall see your own country”, a loud booming voice (mine) told myself. “Thy will strap thine wife and mother-in-law into a motorhome and see hitherto unexplored nether regions of this splendid, generously scenically-endowed South Island!” I hopped online to book. Filled and fuelled with great anticipation. And at that moment, so seemingly, did the rest of New Zealand. “Hi Peter, Awesome that you’re looking to get moving! To set expectations, we don’t expect to get back to everyone this week. It would be a huge help if you wait to hear back from us before making another enquiry.” Except I want to go THIS week. Being a resourceful sort of character, I sensed a chink in the corporate armour. I would drive up to Christchurch International
Airport where there are about a gazillion motorhomes parked up, stroll confidently up to the service desk after first sanitising my hands, and arrange it all, on the spot. Great idea, but it didn’t work for reasons I won’t bore you with here. Sure I got a tour of said motorhomes, including the one with the bohemian interior that made me want to barf. But no, so sorry, it would need to be booked online. I scanned the vast lot which appeared to contain about 20 motorhomes for every man, woman and child in New Zealand. This I thought is where NZ comes undone. When it comes to the crunch, we seemingly just can’t quite deliver. But we mean well. A little disillusioned and subscribing to the theory that there are plenty more fish in the sea, I drove around the greater Harewood environs and approached another operator. The friendly service was A1. But the vehicles were more upmarket, more expensive and once I’d factored in the additional hundreds to bring the insurance excess down, it began to feel like not such a great bargain. Hell, I’m not on Perth wages.
I took a step back and a deep breath and thought, this isn’t a week in a motorhome for five or six hundred. This is looking like three times that. Totally defeating the original attraction. A hop back online and it was plain to see that the easiest, cheapest, most versatile option was to seek out some good motel/hotel deals along the way. Mind you, there has to be some hard yards put in to find the deals. “We’ve slashed our rates. From $350 per night to $250.” Sorry not good enough. Try harder Mr or Mrs Operator. One fairly well-known hotel in Queenstown was offering $130 a night. Now that’s what I’m talking about. Because as much as Kiwis want to see Golden Bay, Milford Sound, the rugged West Coast and Queenstown and the Remarkables ... what they really want to see is “value for money”. A passion for basketball By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
The epitome of longevity. As far as community stalwarts go, they don’t come more staunch than Colleen Lindsay. A tireless sporting administrator for decades in Mid Canterbury, she has been a dogged toiler in the region ever since she was part of Mid Canterbury’s original basketball playing incarnation in the mid-50s. She added another accolade to her astounding accomplishments this week as she was inducted into the Mid Canterbury administrators’ “hall of fame”. A stunned Lindsay was awarded Mid Canterbury’s Robilliard Trophy for services to sport, the fourth ever recipient from Basketball Mid Canterbury (BBMC). It caps an endless tenure across all facets of the sport as she faces retirement from the game she has dedicated her life to. “They tell me I went white,” she said. “It’s very humbling. “There’s so many deserving people out there that you don’t know about.” Lindsay initially grafted as a player in the region where she was part of the original Mid Canterbury women’s squad more than 60 years ago. She was part of the representative team who hosted Australia back in 1960 at a time when the Mid Canterbury unit was stronger than Canterbury. The Ashburton Sports Hall was the only international full-sized court in the South Island. For many years, she represented her district at regional, South Island and national tournaments. BBMC secretary Pauline Paterson said during the Robilliard Trophy presentation that there was always a desire to go a step further. Even as a teen, she was already proving herself as a behind-thescenes operator. “I became secretary when I was

about 18 and I got on the committee and it was a hard place to get off.” As her competitive playing days wound down, a transition into administration and coaching was a natural one. “When your playing days are over you have to find something else to do,” she said. “I didn’t ever think about it really.” Her administration roles included secretary for BBMC, treasurer at local competition games, and as an official at tournaments and wheelchair basketball games.
Never far from the action, Lindsay took on various tournament controller roles across all levels of basketball. As a proficient dressmaker, she was an ideal person to helm rep team uniforms. Alongside coaching various club and representative teams, she later received a Basketball New Zealand Long Service Award in 2007 for her contribution to the sport which had spanned half a century by this point. “It’s nice, but you don’t do it for that,” she said. “You do it because you love
what you’re doing.” Although Lindsay remains a BBMC committee member – a credit to her dedication – she has expanded her repertoire in other codes. Like her father, she got involved in swimming. Whenever she had any downtime, she became part of the Learn to Swim programme in Ashburton and is the current chairman of the Ashburton Special Olympics. “Well it was a family tradition,” she said. “My dad was a swimming coach and I helped him.
“I taught swimming for about 45 years and it’s something I enjoy doing. Giving back I guess. “I’ve loved everything I’ve done.” Although no moment stands out for Lindsay, she admitted her children remained her proudest achievement – despite inheriting their father’s genes. “They’re taller than me … by a lot,” she said. “Their father was 6 foot 3.” Her daughters Michelle and Susan have both played representative basketball at under-18 and under-23 level.

SPORTING EXCELLENCE Sporting excellence was decided last week in the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. While the majority of profiles of the nominees of the categories appeared in last weekend’s Guardian, some were missed off the list so make their appearance today. OUTSTANDING JUNIOR TEAM The Ashburton College – Smallbore Rifle It’s been a dominating 12 months for the Ashburton College Smallbore Rifle Team, who have delivered outstanding results once again. They were untouchable during the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Shooting Championships, holding off the challenge of 25 other schools, where they showed real consistency in their performances to beat some classy line-ups. The team also produced the top two individuals in the competition and three individual grade champions as well.
OUTSTANDING JUNIOR SPORTSPERSON
Shania Harrison-Lee.
Shania Harrison-Lee – Shooting Shania Harrison-Lee has had a busy year competing overseas at the Oceania Championships, where she gained gold and bronze medals – as well as picking up two new Oceania records – to complete a total haul of four new records for the year. With a trophy haul totalling 24 for the 12-month period she was a part of 11 different New Zealand teams, and is currently ranked
number two in the country for smallbore rifle shooting. The top individual in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, Harrison-Lee is now training for the opening of the Commonwealth Games 2022 selection over the coming months. Hayley Tallentire – Netball 2019 was a breakout year on the netball court for Hayley Tallentire. She was one of 20 players
Hayley Tallentire.
Kyle Cabangun and Taylah Burrowes. identified across New Zealand at the South Island Secondary Schools’ competition as a talented player. An integral part of the Ashburton College Senior A side inside the shooting circle, Hayley was pivotal in the side’s success in the local Premier A netball competition and placing fourth at the South Island Secondary Schools’ tournament which also acted as a qualifier for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ tournament where the side performed with distinction. As well as her playing efforts, Hayley is an active coach and official on the sidelines in the younger grades. Maadi Lowry – Cycling Maadi Lowry is set for a huge future on the bike following on from a successful 2019. The star was in golden form at the New Zealand Age Group Track Nationals, claiming a gold medal in the Under 17 Girls’ Points Race, a silver medal in the team pursuit and a bronze medal in the Madison. Add to that a four silver medal haul at the Canterbury Track Cycling Championships and two gold medals at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Road Cycling Championships and she’s a name for the future – perhaps a future name to wear the silver fern. Taylah Burrowes – Karate It’s been a standout 12 months for Taylah Burrowes, who is producing good results her specialist sport of karate. Currently, she holds the Australian and New Zealand National Secondary Schools’ titles for Kumite Cadets (under 16) and is New Zealand Open Champion. Despite an extremely busy schedule, Taylah
still managed to place in every competition that she competed in during the 12 month period. Truly remarkable stuff.
Kyle Cabangun – Karate Hard work and dedication on the mat have led Kyle Cabangun to achieve impressive results in karate over the past 12 months. A well-respected competitor who has always shown respect to his fellow competitors, Kyle’s crowning glory was his success at the Australian Open in Sydney where he placed first in the Junior Male, less than 55kg Kumite event. Add to that his multiple placings in various national tournaments and his success in provincial tournaments and he’s destined for great things.
Brittany Fowler.
OUTSTANDING SENIOR SPORTSPERSON Brittany Fowler – Equestrian It’s been an exciting 12 months for rising equestrian star, Brittany Fowler. Getting the opportunity to wear the Silver Fern in the Interschool Eventing Team and then winning first place in the Eventing Australia International Challenge she’s pushed her name into the spotlight of the equestrian sport. A member of this year’s Eventing New Zealand Talent squad – a team of just seven riders from across New Zealand, Brittany has produced consistently excellent results across all national and regional events throughout the 12 month period.

Football ready for ‘release’ By Adam Burns
adam.b@theguardian.co.nz
It’s here. After a lead-up like no other – an 84 day hiatus due to Covid-19 – the fact community football embarks on a season today is a feat in itself. It marks the first of the major winter codes to get under way following a period of significant uncertainty. And for Methven FC, the excitement is brewing following what was described as a “fantastic pre-season” by its senior coach Marc Davies.
The club claims home advantage for its opening Mainland Football division 2 encounter with the FC Twenty11 Falcons at the domain this afternoon. The side will be looking to utilise its pre-season focal points around fitness, technique and tactics despite having restricted preparation. “We were just starting on the tactical work with how we want to play the game when we were shut down,” Davies said. As a result, the coaching group made some adjustments during preparation where stamina was
favoured over explosive speed, he said. Further to the overall acclimatisation of all football clubs, post-Covid restrictions had forced Methven to limit themselves to foot skills rather than chesting or heading. It has hardly deterred the squad with increased numbers at trainings. “People have been getting excited,” Davies said. “Some people, especially males, tend to compartmentalise – problems which I think some have done without football
as their release. “We have definitely had to bring a few people out of that.” Other local teams are likely to be similarly charged heading into today. Mid Canterbury United head up the road to face FC Twenty11 at Avonhead Park in their Canterbury Championship League opener. United’s division 4 lineup host Papanui-Redwood AFC at the Ashburton Domain. Methven’s division 6 team travel to Akaroa where Banks Peninsula await.
Five months after breaking his neck, the former Hurricanes rugby player Michael Fatialofa is leaving hospital in England. Fatialofa feared he would never walk again after breaking a bone in his neck playing for English club Worcester against Saracens in January. He underwent surgery to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord caused by bruising and swelling. “My delightful husband is coming home tomorrow night,” Fatialofa’s wife Tatiana said on her Twitter account on Thursday. “5 MONTHS I’ve waited.” She later posted the couple’s gratitude for all the people who have supported them.
Rally NZ called off September’s Rally New Zealand has been cancelled due to the coronavirus. New Zealand is the fourth round of the 13 race World Rally Championship to be axed. The event in and around Auckland was returning to the WRC calendar for the first time since 2012. “With our borders closed to international travel and the logistics required to host thousands of international visitors ... the September 2020 date was not practical,” Rally New Zealand CEO Michael Goldstein said. Three rallies have taken place this year and the next on the original schedule is now Turkey at the end of September.
■■RUGBY
Carter in for a frosty reception in Canterbury Dan Carter, the proud Cantabrian now in the unfamiliar colours of Blue, won’t have his family cheering him on if he suits up for his new team against the Crusaders this season. In an interview with Newstalk ZB’s Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford, Carter’s dad Neville said although he gave his blessing for his son’s move to the Blues, he will still be supporting the Crusaders when the two sides meet. “It’s pretty straightforward,” Neville said. “The Crusaders are always going to get the support from me. And I’ll just keep my fingers crossed he’s not going to get smashed by them.” Dan Carter has long been a loyalist to the red and black, but he says he signed with the Blues ahead of Super Rugby Aotearoa next week because he wanted to “give back” to New Zealand rugby. The nature of the current Covid environment and some strong persuasion from his former team-
Dan Carter (right) shares a moment with his father Neville (back) after receiving a special cap for his 100th New Zealand appearance in 2013. mate and new coach Leon MacDonald, as well as the fact that his wife Honor and kids are based in Auckland, made the decision a lot easier too. However, he still had to clear it
with his family down south. “I talked to the old man,” Carter said in his first media appearance as a Blues player on Thursday. “He’s a proud Cantab, but like he has been throughout my career,
he was really supportive. That goes a long way, having that family support.” Neville recalled the conversation he had with his son before he went on to shock the country by signing with the Auckland franchise. “I said to him ‘you’ve still got a wee bit to give back to New Zealand rugby and we’re lacking rugby at the moment. So if you’re keen to give it a go, go for it’. There’s nowhere else he can go at this stage unfortunately so it’s an opportunity to give back to rugby in New Zealand. “I did say to him ‘you may be getting a bit of a bad reception when you get down our way’.” Carter has also told the story of the time news was leaked to the papers that he was close to signing with the Blues earlier in his career, which prompted a teary phone call from his grandma (Neville’s mum). This time, however, nana was
happy for her grandson and supported the move – although, like her son, she probably won’t be rooting for Carter’s Blues against the Crusaders. “Her father played for Canterbury and her uncle played for Canterbury and the All Blacks,” Neville said. “So she was definitely Cantabrian through and through. “I managed to give her a ring just to actually break the news to her before I thought she’d see it on telly but she said no she’s seen it and she’s finally decided, being the age of 90, that it’s quite good he’s actually getting back into doing something with his rugby. So she was quite pleased as a whole.” While the days of his son playing in red are long gone, Neville says there’s one thing he definitely doesn’t miss about that time: those massive underwear billboards. “We took one look at it and took a u-turn and went back the other way.”

■■THOROUGHBREDS
Returning two weeks ahead of plan NZME Thoroughbred racing’s earlier return to New Zealand racetracks is confirmed. It will be Pukekohe Park on June 20 which holds the first gallops meeting since the Covid-19 lockdown, two weeks ahead of schedule. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing is set to announce the new meeting programmed for that date, after liaising with trainers to ascertain interest and potential horse numbers. Both were higher than expected with upwards of 100 horses likely to be available for the meeting. While some are certain to drop away, anything around 70 horses would be enough to hold a meeting of between six to eight races. The meeting is likely to have predominantly shorter races because of the lack of recent racing for horses but for racing fans any action will be a blessing after the most popular racing code stopped two and half months ago. The Saturday meeting will be followed by another meeting at Riccarton in Canterbury the following Saturday, which will
be brought forward from its original July 3 date. The next meetings will then be at Te Rapa and Awapuni on Saturday, July 4.

Thursday saw the first official trials meeting since lockdown at Foxton and it attracted 14 heats suggesting the Central Districts will have no issues getting a race meeting
off the ground by early July. Greyhound and harness racing have already returned. But thoroughbred racing has taken longer to come back as the majority of horses are trained on public tracks that had to be closed at Level 4, meaning horses needed at least six weeks to get back to anything like race fitness. That means those trained on private tracks, farms or beaches should have a natural fitness edge for the first few meetings. The return of thoroughbred racing, while it will hardly be Group 1 classic fare, will be the final step in restarting racing’s $1.6 billion industry, with all three codes back albeit on restricted schedules. Owners will be allowed back to the harness races this weekend but it looks likely thoroughbred racing will be spared having to implement controls with many predicting the country will be back at Level 1 with no restrictions on gatherings before the June 20 relaunch date. Pukekohe on a winter’s afternoon would hardly be most racing fans’ dream meeting. But after the last three months, for many it will be like heaven.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The urge to complain is a natural reaction to frustrating circumstances, though the mature response is to move past words and into solutions and action. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll need to include more people, and you’ll probably add them before you realise that you also have to make room for them. Don’t underestimate the adaptability of others. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll do your best. What more can you do? Face yourself like you would a kind parent facing a child who hands in the stick figure drawing. Appreciate your own innocent charm. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You can be yourself and also be the one who gets those goals on your list, the one who makes mistakes, the vulnerable, exuberant, afraid and powerful one. You contain multitudes. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Cleaning and clearing bring enormous satisfaction. You’ll scrub the surface of projects, mysteries, countertops, relationships and get a shining reward for your effort. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Mistakes are not only opportunities to for growth and mastery; they are the best relationship glue there is. Nothing will go wrong without producing an obvious upside. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): The requirements of the day are pretty awesome. You don’t have to solve problems or answer questions. You don’t even have to “just be you.” All you have to do is relax. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): While you’re aware there’s a certain way to serve tea or launch a spacecraft, you’re fine with not knowing what it is. As for the things you’re actually going to do today, you’re inclined to learn all rules upfront. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Eventually, you’ll be able to handle more and move faster. But this is still the early stages. You’re still learning, and you won’t regret taking the time to learn it right. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll bring together the best of all worlds – a spiritual person with a practical point of view. Your open mind will lead you to test theories and run with what works. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): To ask, “What’s wrong?” when nothing is wrong creates something wrong. You’re aware of this and other misuses of focus, and so you’ll seek and find the intelligence, beauty and fun in situations. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): To accept differences and tolerate others is only level one. The next level is a celebration of diversity. A world where we honour not only our own traditions but everyone’s could be heaven on earth.
