Burgess brings up 50 years
All Chiro
By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
It might be a milestone he never planned on reaching, but Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess has no plan on stopping now that he has reached his 50th anniversary in the brigade. Today marks 50 years since he first entered the Ashburton Fire Station as a firefighter and plenty has happened since. The very landscape around the district has changed, as has the way fires are fought and the types of calls that firefighters attend. “When I first joined we would do 100 calls a year, now we haven’t done any less than 400 in the past six or seven years,” he said. “The diversity of the organisation has changed and the area around us has grown, we now go to more accidents, some industrial accidents and medical calls and other incidents. “If people are in trouble they hit the button and expect the big red truck to show up.” Burgess said when he first joined the brigade he did not expect to still be around 50 years later, but like the other 14 members of the brigade who have served at least 25 years, he has stuck around. “I’m not quite sure why (there are so many long serving firefighters in the brigade), but we have always had really good support from employers, self-employed firefighters and a real mix of people,” he said. “There has always been really good family involvement as well, with sons following fathers in. “There is a real dedication here.” When it comes to stand-out fires he has been involved with over the years Burgess points to Seales Winslow and the Mill Fire as two of the more memorable fires. “The biggest change we have probably seen has been in the rural sector with going from being dominated by cropping to dairying it is quite different to what we have dealt with in the past (in terms of types of fires),” he said. “It is a whole different environment, there is a big lack of trees

now, if there were burn-offs there was a bigger risk of them spreading.” This year Burgess retired after 34 years of working for Lion, but said he has no plans on retiring from the fire service anytime soon. “As long as the health stays good and the desire to keep doing is there I will keep going,” he said. Burgess said some of the friendships he has made out of the fire service has been one of the most rewarding parts of the role, making friends with other firefighters from all over the world such as in the United States and Japan. “You really pour your heart and soul in to it,” he said. “It really is one of the things you get so much more out of it than you put in.” As he has moved up the ranks the work in the service has
changed, with the chief in charge of the administration side of things. “The reality is as chief officer here you are in charge of more admin and having to keep up with what is going on in the organisation,” he said. Burgess said there has been a big change in the past couple of years with the formation of Fire and Emergency New Zealand which brought together the fire service and the rural fire brigades across the country under one organisation. “There is still a long way to go and I’m not sure what the time frame will be.” While there are no special plans for the big day today, an event is being planned for February next year to mark the occasion, with Burgess’ son Mark set to be home from Japan at the same time.

Pup tickled pink by local hero award By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
For years Paul (Pup) Chamberlain has told other people they have to take praise and recognition with good grace but he never expected to give himself the same message. When he received an email informing him he had been recognised as a Kiwibank local hero, Chamberlain said his first thought was that it was a joke. “I was at a meeting and thought someone was taking the p...,” he said. He checked the message, realised it was genuine and was stunned, believing he’d done no more than many, many others had as a contributor to his community. “But then I was pretty tickled to have been nominated. It’s a nice all-round acknowlegment. I’m tickled pink,” he said. Chamberlain joined the New Zealand Police in 1978, worked on home territory in Southland for eight years before moving to Ashburton. Twenty-nine years later he signed off and began a new career in the private sector as an educator with Crown Public Health, continuing the education work he’d been involved with during his policing career. During his policing years, he became the face of the police school education programme DARE. He was also the programme’s national trainer and director. It was a programme designed to help kids make good decisions and to acquire the tools they needed to

keep themselves safe. “I knew we had to do more as police, to put the ambulance at the top of the cliff. I’m very much a believer in strengthening a community and encouraging people to look after each other,” he said. Eventually, much as he loved the education side of his policing role, he realised for his own mental health he needed to bring his career to an end and look to a new future.
“I’d hit the wall in the police really and with putting on the uniform.” He developed an exit strategy that provided a breathing space before an opportunity came to become a Crown Public Health health and mental health educator. It was work that was close to Chamberlain’s heart. He now adds to his workload a recent appointment as one of two people who will run Ashburton’s
Lives Worth Living suicide prevention programme. It’s a project he’s passionate about. When he looks at his life, Chamberlain said it’s the things that have involved working with and helping people that have really spun his wheels. “You just do what you do without thinking about it really. I have a passion for working with people and I guess I feed off this. If you give, it’s a well being but it’s also a
selfish act because you get a really good feeling when you give, that’s the buzz.” The Mid Canterbury community was a very caring and supportive one in which to live and work, he said. “If people see you have a vision, they’ll back you to the end.” The awards ceremony was a humbling occasion, Chamberlain said. “Sitting in the room listening to the stories of all the others, I thought I was in the wrong room, that I didn’t belong there, they’d done so much,” he said. Chamberlain’s mother Cath lives in New Plymouth and a little subterfuge was needed to bring her south for the award ceremony. Fortunately it was the same day as his birthday and while she thought she was travelling to Christchurch for dinner, she had no idea that dinner involved a national award for her son. “I’m a mum who’s very proud of all of her children,” she said. Her son was always the quiet one, the anxious one in the family but it was wonderful to see how he had become such a confident person who was committed to improving life in his community, she said. The Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year Award aims to identify and reward everyday people doing extraordinary things in their local communities. This year 879 nominations were received with about 300 awards being made.
Extra police to be rostered on over the holiday season Across the Aoraki District Police have rostered extra prevention teams on for the weekends and days leading to Christmas and New Year 2019-20. “A higher police presence across Aoraki will help our community celebrate the holidays safely,” Mid-South Canterbury Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray said. “Our goal is to prevent serious crime, related victimisation and crashes that result in injury or
death.” The prevention teams will complement the frontline police safety team duties but will specifically concentrate on licensed premises visits, random checkpoints and public event foot patrols. Additional staff will also be provided in the Mackenzie Country and at Caroline Bay over New Year’s celebrations. “We want our friends, families and our community to enjoy festivities but also to be safe and
feel safe in the lead-up to Christmas and beyond,” he said. “If you are going out to a pub, club or party, think ahead, avoid risky situations and keep yourself and your friends safe. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk of becoming a victim, such as making sure your phone is fully charged before you head out. ■■ If you are planning on drinking, then it’s a good idea to have something substantial
to eat before you start drinking ■■ Plan how you’re getting home at the end of your night, always take cash or an eftpos card just in case you need to pay for transport home ■■ Don’t wander off from your friends when out and about. It’s easy to lose people in hotels so always let your friends know where you’re going. ■■ Have a place to meet up with your friends if you get sep-
arated and have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. Be aware of the risk of drink spiking - don’t leave your drink unattended or accept any drinks that you haven’t personally seen poured, especially from strangers ■■ Make sure you’re going home with the same number of people you started with. Look after your friends and keep to main streets and well-lit areas.

Christmas arrives early at the lily patch By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
She came as a customer, Christmas lilies and raspberries on her mind, but she left Terrace View gardens knowing that one day she would own the property. Between falling in love with the flower and berry farm, Victoria Johnson spent many hours hoping and dreaming of the day owner Helen Hargreaves would decide to sell. In October last year her dreams came true and today Johnson owns the Carters Terrace farmhouse she fell in love with and is now running a lily, raspberry and strawberry farm. This week she started cutting the first of this year’s crop of Christmas lilies and when you have flowers that are susceptible to the vagaries of the weather, those first flowers are cause for celebration, she said. Last year’s crop was lost to hail but this year they have had the benefit of life in a covered tunnel house. What that has done is ensure not only a huge crop of flowers but also an early one. “They’ve been phenomenal and have definitely paid for themselves,” Johnson said. Buying what is now known as Terrace Croft was the first step in what will be a large scale flower farm for Johnson who is a self-confessed ‘massively keen’ gardener. Previous owner Hargreaves was there for day one of cutting and said she could not recall an earlier harvest. That means the flower harvest is likely to be over by Christmas, but with tight budded stems in the cool store, blooms are likely to Victoria Johnson, celebrating the early arrival of Christmas lilies at her Tinwald lily farm Terrace Croft. be available until Christmas day, she said. Queens of Kiwiana reminisce By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Dames Jools and Lynda Topp reminisced their way around the Ashburton Museum yesterday, as they viewed an exhibition on a subject they were very familiar with. That subject was themselves. The Topp Twins: An Exhibition for New Zealand celebrates the contributions the two entertainers have made to the country’s social, cultural and political landscape. “It was sort of overwhelming when we walked in, it was way too much of us,” said Dame Lynda as she described what it had been like the first time the pair had seen the exhibition when it opened at Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and Heritage in Palmerston North. The exhibition, which features photos, archival footage, costumes, interactives and memorabilia, also staged at the National Library prior to making its way to Ashburton. “There was Jacinda, Helen ... all the old girls were there, it was like an old Labour Party meeting.” The Ashburton installation, which runs to February 9, was just as exciting for the pair, as they chatted to museum staff and media, who had been notified about the twins’ impending visit. “It’s pretty cool,” Lynda said, while Jools added that the concept of being “living legends” was very exciting. “When you think of museums, you think of something old and stuffed. They actually grabbed us while we were still alive, so we can be part of it as well,” Jools added. She said the Topp Twins had helped put Kiwiana on the map with their various characters. “People adopted those characters as their own. They might have an aunty like Camp Mother, or a bloke down the road like Ken.” Amongst the gathered small crowd following the twins as they walked amongst the exhibits were young Ashburton fans Caitlyn Barwell and Jessica Cowan. They had heard a whis-

In brief Six sex charges A 20-year-old man who has pleaded not guilty to sex charges from 2016 was remanded to February 3 in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. Judge Ian Mill heard from Crown lawyer Andrew McCrea that restorative justice was under way and this component would likely be completed by the end of January. Judge Mill deemed name suppression and bail would continue for the defendant. There are a total of six charges, which pertain to the same alleged victim.
House fire training If you see fire crews battling a house fire in Rakaia today don’t panic, it’s on purpose. Firefighters will be carrying out a training exercise on a house in the Rakaia township today which is a golden opportunity for firefighters to hone their skills, Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Tyrone Burrowes said. The training will take place between 9am and 2pm, and the house will be completely destroyed by the end of the day. Seven trainers from Christchurch will be helping with the training, while firefighters from Rakaia, Dunsandel, Pendarves, Lauriston and Ashburton will be taking part.

The two Dames gave plenty of insights not only into their life of entertainment, but also their passion for political activism. “We were the Gretas of the 1980s,” Lynda said, referring to climate change activist Greta Thunberg. Bastion Point, the Springbok Tour, homosexual law reform and the anti-nuclear movement marked out a decade of protest for the pair. They recalled a 1985 concert tour with Australian rock star and political activist Peter Garrett, taken in the name of a nuclear-free New Zealand. Tickets

kids.” The pair tied up their tour of the exhibition by trying on a Camp Mother and Camp Leader costume which is part of an interactive display. “We have been dressing up for 30 years,” Jools said. “And we have made a living out of it, absolutely magic.” The Topp Twins will star at Christmas in the Park at the Ashburton Domain this evening.

Dig out your torch, mark December 18 on your calendar and prepare to explore the Ashburton Museum by night. The museum’s annual Santa Hunt is an end of year activity that has attracted large numbers each year. It’s designed for families who search by torch light for dozens of Santa’s little helpers. The initial hunt takes place in the evening with the lights out, before becoming a day-time activity throughout the remainder of the holidays. Museum director Tanya Robinson said the Santa Hunt was a great activity for children over the holidays. The December 18 hunt will start at 5pm. Hunting will continue during the museum’s business hours during the rest of the school holidays.
Minor fire call-outs The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade received three call-outs yesterday, first responding to a fallen branch on power lines before responding to a rubbish fire that had blown in to a hedge on Singletree Road. The third was too a motor vehicle accident on West Street at around 3.30pm.

Nola’s college life spans half a century By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
In 1967 as a 13-year-old Nola Smitheram started her secondary school life at Ashburton College; 52 years later she walked out the school gates for the final time. Over those years she’s been both student and member of staff, working across a range of roles. She’s married, raised two children, tutored hundreds of children highland dancing and been a top performing triathlete. But the time has come, Nola said, when she wants more freedom, more flexibility, when she wants to finally cut ties with the workforce. On leaving school Nola worked for stock firm Dalgety’s, before winning a job in the college office in 1971. Two years later she and late husband Murray moved to Gisborne, Nola returned to the college in 1986. Thirty-three years later she’s left, along the way racking up 35 years and five months on the school’s pay roll. With her oldest child at intermediate school, Nola was happy to accept a job that offered part-time employment, but that quickly morphed into a full time job. Over the coming years her workload changed, technology arrived and her job description kept changing – office clerk, registrar, office manager. Twenty-five years down the track she changed direction, moving back to part-time hours and focusing
on the management of the NCEA co-ordinator aspect of her job. Added to this was the task of the special assessment conditions and reader writer co-ordinator roles. She retired in July but a replacement couldn’t be found. “I said I wouldn’t see them stuck and went back and filled in as exam centre manager, but this time that’s it.” Looking back, Nola said the college office was a vastly different place to the high-tech place it is today. And it’s not only technology that’s changed, so too have attitudes to working mums, she said. “When I was offered the job when I returned to Ashburton I was asked what I would do if my children were sick? Imagine asking that today.” While she’s cut her working hours over the past few years, Nola said she was now ready to completely cut ties with the working world. Over her time at the college she’s worked with five principals, each with their own style. During those years, regardless of who was at the helm, regardless of how her job had changed, Nola said the school had been a great place to work, feeling like a second home. She’s retiring with a bucket list that won’t see her life change dramatically – she’ll continue travelling overseas, continuing cycling for fitness but she says she’ll enjoy the luxury of a life that isn’t fitted in around work.

IPCA deems use of tasers in Geraldine arrest justified Sam Morton
sam@timaruapp.nz
The actions of two police officers who fired their tasers to effect a man’s arrest in Geraldine last year have been justified, according to the findings of an Independent Police Conduct Authority (ICPA) report. The report, released on Thursday, found that the man had “no apparent intention to comply with the officers’ instructions”
and noted that “communication had no effect on the man’s behaviour” – continuing to ignore repeated instructions to put the handbrake on and step out of the police car he had previously locked himself in. The incident report relates to a man’s arrest in August 2018, where police had to block a single-lane bridge with their own vehicle to prevent the man from travelling any further. With no where to go,
the man then assaulted an innocent member of the public in an attempt to steal their car, before locking himself in a police car, releasing the handbrake and letting the car travel backwards down the road. Attempts by both officers to pepper spray and taser the man while he was in the police vehicle were unsuccessful. Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price ac-
knowledged the ICPA findings, pointing out the two officers attempting to arrest the man were confronted with extremely erratic and concerning behaviour that evening. “The man, who was suspected of drug-related offending, had endangered the lives of himself, his passenger and other motorists on the road due to the manner of his driving when attempting to escape police,” Price said.
“Eventually when the man got out of the police car, he ran from two officers and then resisted arrest when the officers attempted to restrain him. “Use of force by police officers is always a last resort, but in this instance the man continued to be volatile with no apparent intention to comply with the officers’ instructions, and the officers were justified in firing their tasers to effect his arrest.”

Allen’s Ashburton offer a great service
Young actors will be based in the great outdoors for Big Little Theatre Company’s Summer Theatre School. Drama Garden will run January 13 to 18, and be held at Trott’s Garden. Director Jackie Heffernan said she had been inspired to hold her ninth annual school holiday course outside, following reading recent research from Cambridge University. Sadly, the researchers found that children aged eight and over were better at identifying Pokemon types than they were at identifying natural species. Researchers had come to the conclusion that today’s youth were more inspired by synthetic subjects than they were by living creatures. “So it is with pleasure that we are able to offer a theatre school this year that will take its inspiration from a garden,” Heffernan said. “There’s just something about creating work outside.” The company staged Shakespeare in the Garden at Trott’s earlier this year, and also held some classes at the gardens this term. The summer school would take inspiration from Robert MacFarlane’s best-selling book The Lost Words, which raises awareness of the natural world and the need to protect it. Heffernan said a couple of her senior pupils would help with tutoring, and she was also hoping to get a songwriting tutor to come on board. Songwriting was another dimension of performance which could have its inspiration in nature. “It’s just another opportunity to tap into some creativity that children probably didn’t even know they had,” she said. Heffernan said enrolments would close on December 23. She would be taking a maximum of 40 pupils. Enrolments were coming in, but there were still places left.

Treated to a special performance By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
Junior school children from Hampstead and Tinwald schools were given a Christmas treat on Wednesday. As part of their lead-up to Christmas, the newly formed Hakatere Parish, a combination of the Oxford Street Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in Tinwald, put on a short performance of the Christmas Story for school children in their area. In total 300 children were bused to the church over the course of the morning. They all laughed at the antics of the angel Gabriel, played by Deirdre McFarlane, as she danced up and down the aisle announcing the birth of the baby Jesus and sang along with the included songs. Once the 12 parish members finished the Christmas Story, it was the turn of the eighty Hampstead school children to return the favour. The Year 1 to 3 voices filled the church as they sang three songs they had been practising. We Wish You A Merry Christmas was certainly sung with great gusto. “It is lovely to have the church filled with children at this time of year and to let them know what Christmas is all about,” parish member Maureen Bishop said. Eight-year-old Brooklyn Aberhart made a beautiful job of thanking the parish members for entertaining them. On the way out each child was given a goodie bag. Each bag contained a leaflet on the church, some small games and puzzles, a candy cane and a shortbread star. The shortbead stars were made by four church members especially for the children.

celebrates 140 years of service Ashburton Welcomed Murray with Pea, Pie and Pud

urray Anderson’s first introducon to Ashburton 61 years ago was the pie cart. There was no sophiscated dining aer 5pm when Murray and his new bride, Annee, arrived to farm in the Ashton district. Arthur Sco’s pie cart was open on the Havelock Street corner and Murray had pea, pie and pud. Annee had more exoc tastes and ordered bacon and eggs. “I sll remember the colour of the eggs. They had a nice smell about them,” she said. Arthur, who wore one of the great toupees of Ashburton, was mine host of the café de kerbside for many years. Murray’s farm was at the mouth of the Ashburton River and he farmed 600 ewes on his 400 acres. But he also shared his property with 4000 rabbits. He has a vivid memory of Annee driving their Ausn A35. He rode shotgun in the back while Robert, the baby, slept in the bassinet. Murray used his 22 rifle to effecvely reduce numbers. “It was either the rabbits or me. I had to get rid of them,” he said. Murray and Annee were new to the area and there was no beer way to find out about Ashburton District than subscribe to the Guardian. “I wanted to get to know the community and its people. The Guardian enabled me to do that,” he says. Then and now it’s provided a vital service to the Ashburton District in a professional manner and is the community’s voice, Murray says. He joined the Flemington branch of Federated Farmers and was then invited to stand for the county council. Murray served three terms and, with the advent of local government amalgamaon, he became the district’s chairman of finance under Geoff Geering. Murray prided himself on being a hands-on member. During his me on the county council, he supported the 10-year plan for new bridging. If there was water the county built a bridge over it. In all 40 bridges were built, under budget, on me, with no debt and no consultants. “I don’t think a bridge has been built since then,” he says. In 1995 Murray Anderson became mayor for three terms. “I had a good relaonship with the Guardian. I always knew the value of the newspaper to the community,” he said. “I supported open government which allowed people to know what’s going on.” During his me as mayor, he recalls water issues were the greatest single challenge, both urban and rural. Murray loved promong the Ashburton District and he had great support from his local newspaper. In his fortnightly columns he told his readers about their community, its development and growth and how it
Murray and Annee Anderson was the best local authority in New Zealand. Murray recalls the fight to retain services at Ashburton Hospital. The community was determined not to allow the hospital to be downgraded. Murray was at the heart of the scrap and he remembers with pride how 10,000 people surrounded the hospital holding hands to voice their concern. “The Guardian did a great job in highlighng what was going on. When a community gets together we can achieve great things,” he recalls. Murray may have rered, but he hasn’t opted out of the world. From their gracious home at Elgin, Murray has championed many causes. In parcular, he’s totally opposed to the council’s plan to transfer highway traffic through residenal Ashburton. “In the 61 years I’ve lived here, I regard it as the worst planning decision and the community deserves beer,” he says. Recently Murray congratulated the Guardian on achieving 140 years of service. “It has set a great example in helping to facilitate successful outcomes by informing the community with well researched informaon which allows its readers to make good decisions,” he says. He points to young people being the future lifeblood of the community. “We all have a responsibility in helping them foster the pursuit of knowledge,” he says.c“In this area the newspaper is a key facilitator.” It has a role to play now and, in the years ahead.
ome of the great hair pieces of the world have been worn in Ashburton. I was reminded recently when I interviewed Murray Anderson, a rered farmer who gave much of his life to local government. Murray’s first experience of Ashburton was eang at Arthur Sco’s pie cart. Murray and Annee had only been married five days when they arrived here. It was the start of a new life for them. The pie cart, somemes known as the Havelock Hilton, was the only eatery open aer 5pm. Was the café de kerbside the highlight of their honeymoon? We don’t know, but they sll remember their meal. Arthur had an heroic hair piece, a Donald Trumpet. It was definitely human hair, but probably not his. I imagine some male proudly gave his follicles for Arthur. Charles Dickens once wrote in A Tale Of Two Cies, “it’s a far, far beer thing that I do, than I have ever done”. Hairy men throughout NZ would agree. They’ve sacrificed their moustache comb-overs for Arthur and other prominent Mid Cantabrians. That sacrifice sll connues today. Jack Davidson used to cut my hair in Burne Street. Jack did something to other people’s heads that he didn’t need to do to himself. He had arficial lawn. Jack was a wonderful gentleman and had a natural hairpiece, more nave than exoc. It would have survived the Owairaka/Mt Albert tree purge. But Jack defied its purpose. If you’re going to wear a toupee, it should be clearly idenfied and celebrated as one. You were le in no doubt with former councillor, Bevan Stroud. His was a bird’s nest of beauty, a Mona Lisa of magnificence. With his honourable passing, I hope it resides in the Ashburton Museum. There are people who start with hair, then lose it and inherit someone else’s. That’s the paern. But a close friend, started with hair, lost it, had a toupee installed, then lost that. Bruce Warwick, a promoter who toured many West End shows through NZ, lost his hair piece at Wellington Airport. He called it Charlie the Rug and, over his lifeme, had many Charlies. As Bruce got older, Charlie got younger. Only fur berets can do that. On this occasion, Wellington was blowing a howling southerly. The wind caught Charlie and blew it down the tarmac. Bruce had lost a dear friend and chased aer it. During the 20 minutes Charlie performed an aerobac display in front of both domesc and internaonal terminals, Wellington Airport was in lockdown. “This is the captain speaking, I know you’ve been flying for 15 hours but we have to go round again. There’s a chap on runway 3, running faster than a 747 on take-off.” When Bruce finally caught his hair piece, it was never the same. Charlie had been buffeted to death. It hung in Bruce’s wardrobe for years before being handed over to a theatre company for use by bald men. Bruce returned to looking like how God created him at birth. I’m sure there are many Charlie the Rug stories in Mid Canterbury that the Guardian would like to hear about. The newspaper has anchored Ashburton for 140 years telling important Mid Canterbury stories. It’s been described as the glue that holds Mid Canterbury together. The same glue that kept Charlie the Rug at the summit of Bruce Warwick, at least unl Wellington Airport.

The art of drawing, with sound By Heather Mackenzie
photographers@theguardian.co.nz
Can drawings have a sound or can sound inspire drawings, and are the two things interconnected? Ask Dunedin artists Hannah Joynt and Jane Venis, and their answer would be yes. Joynt and Venis are the creators of Drawn to Sound, the latest exhibition opening soon at the Ashburton Art Gallery. The unusual thing about this exhibition is that the art to be shown was only started on Wednesday and isn’t finished yet. Over a period of three days the pair will work on the large scale artwork together. Put simply Venis plays music and Joynt draws the sounds she hears. Joynt has a never ending array of paints and pencils on her table and Venis has an equal amount of instruments at the ready. Most striking is the unconventional Steampunk-like brass saxophone Venis made herself. Married together from an old sink u-bend pipe, a gasoline bowser spout and a lampshade, it sounds as fabulous as it looks. A 1950s acoustic guitar has a lovely deep almost melancholy sound. Venis removed all the frets and got it re-laminated.
“Ripping out the frets has given the guitar a unique sound, which I love,” she said. “The flip-side is, however, without the frets you don’t know where you are so I have to play it totally by ear.” Joynt explained her side of the process and said that they often vary their methods. “Sometimes I draw what she is playing and at other times we swap and Jane plays as she sees.” The music and the drawing weave in and out, crossing over each other creating layers of connection. The instruments are played separately or woven together by Venis with the aid of a loop desk. “It is all about layers of sound and layers of marks on the paper,” Joynt said. The pair have been collaborating on this style of art since 2017, over that time they have fallen into their own creative rhythm. “When we are working together we always have a reference point to come back to.” Joynt is a musician herself, so that adds a deeper dimension to her understanding of the music she is drawing. Drawn to Sound opens on December 8 with more details on the exhibition at www.ashburtonartgallery.org.nz

Protesters confront PM at school opening NZME Jacinda Ardern has been confronted with a group of gun-owning protestors at an Auckland school opening. About 40 gun owners picketed outside Grey Lynn Primary School. The protest had been advertised on the New Zealand Firearms Protest website and cited the gun buyback database breach as unacceptable. Victoria O’Brien, spokeswoman for the
group, told media “we’re here because of the incredibly large data breach which has happened to anyone who has followed the government instructions”. “Our private data has been breached. This leads us open to identity theft and criminal invasion. We would like the PM to take responsibility. She and [Police Minister Stuart] Nash have refused to apologise. We demand an apology and we want Nash to resign. She is opening a school, our kids are at risk too because of their failures.”
One highly-agitated driver slowed down in front of the protest and screamed: “Why outside a school you maniacs?”. Police Minister Stuart Nash responded to the gun protest saying: “It’s completely inappropriate for this shadowy new gun group to target primary school children as part of their campaign. “Schools should not be caught up in their agenda.” Ardern was welcomed onto the site with a powhiri by students.

Minister apologises to PM NZME Cabinet Minister Kris Faafoi says he has apologised to the Prime Minister over his mishandling of an immigration matter. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she has confidence in her minister and that his dealings with friend and Opshop singer Jason Kerrison did not constitute a conflict of interest. “I have apologised to the Prime Minister and understand I have let her down in regards to my dealings with Jason Kerrison over an immigration matter concerning his family,” Faafoi said in a statement. “I know I need to be more upfront in the future about what I can and can’t do if I’m approached for help. “I was contacted by Jason, who is an old family friend, to see if I could help him with his step-father’s immigration case. “Rather than telling Jason straight away I couldn’t do anything to help him, I said I would look into it; as MPs are allowed to do in these cases. “I made contact with the Associate Immigration Minister’s Office to seek advice on the appropriate process. They told me to refer him to his local MP and that I could write a support letter. “Following that conversation I told Mr Kerrison he needed to talk to his local electorate MP and I called Matt King to let him know about the case. “I contacted Jason’s mother to offer to write a supporting letter, as I had been advised I could, and got some more details for the letter. However, I never wrote the letter. “I stupidly created an impression through my messages that I was following up on it when in fact I wasn’t. I was uncomfortable with him messaging me pretty regularly on it and you can see I stopped responding to his texts. “In hindsight I should have just been clear and told him I couldn’t help and just to deal with his local MP. But aside from checking to see what the proper process was for me to follow I took no other actions, and specifically took no actions to advance it, influence it, or advocate for it. “I acknowledge this is messy and you could read other meaning into my messages. But I can hand on heart say I wasn’t doing anything to advance the case, and the messages just reflect me not wanting to let a mate down. In hindsight I should have been clearer with him. “I’ve apologised to the Prime Minister and understand I have let her down. I know I need to be more upfront in the future about what I can and can’t do if I’m approached for help.” Ardern said Faafoi should have dealt with the issue in “a much clearer manner”. “I’ve made my views on that very clear to him.”

ground, there is a very real threat that the potential multi-billion-dollar costs will be passed on to customers, not shareholders – and that this would adversely impact businesses that just aren’t in a position to absorb that kind of hit. “The additional costs to borrowers could make lending more expensive and more unobtainable for those businesses already struggling to access capital. “The cost of credit for those businesses able to access lending would also likely increase.” Economists and analysts have picked that commercial property, agricultural and high-loan-tovalue-ratio home loan customers could be affected the most by the change as that lending is seen as more risky by the banks and means they have to hold more assets to cover it. David McLeish, senior portfolio manager and head of fixed income at Fisher Funds, said a large portion of the banking industry’s lending came from low-loan-tovalue residential mortgages. “This will remain an attractive business for the banks. fore unlikely banks will materially pull back from this type of lending.” But he warned other borrowers were likely to feel more of a pinch. “High LVR residential borrowers, such as first-home buyers, farmers and small companies are likely to be some of the hardest hit. “This is because loans made to these higher risk borrowers require the lender to hold a larger amount of capital against them in case the loan goes bad. his could see either higher lending rates or reduced credit made available to these borrowers or both.” The final decision on the capital changes has also frustrated Business New Zealand which has called for more consultation on the changes which come into effect in July 2020. Chief executive Kirk Hope said New Zealand’s major financial institutions were already well capitalised and managed. “Imposing additional requirements on banks will adversely harm their customer base and the costs of reducing risk will be passed on to businesses, households and rural borrowers.” While Hope said the Reserve Bank had taken on board some of the concerns of the business community, it wanted more time to consider a cost/benefit analysis which wasn’t released until today. “There has been no chance for interested parties to have input. “Given the significance of this on consumers, households, businesses, and the rural sector that will ultimately bear the brunt of increased costs and/or restrictions on capital. Further consultation is needed.”

Higher lending rates likely The Reserve Bank’s decision to increase the amount of capital banks will have to hold poses a “significant potential threat to the economic stability of small businesses and the rural sector”, a business advocacy group says. After a year-long consultation, the Reserve Bank revealed its final decisions yesterday in a move that will require the major banks to find an extra $20 billion over seven years. Starting from mid-2020, the banks which dominate the sector will have to increase their total capital to 18 per cent, from a minimum of 10.5 per cent now. Typically, banks carry a buffer above the minimum of at least an additional 2 percentage points. Smaller banks, including the likes of Kiwibank, TSB, Cooperative and SBS will need to have total capital of 16 per cent, up from what they hold now but below December’s proposal. Larger banks need to hold more capital than their smaller rivals because if one were to fail it could have a severe impact on the economy. The RBNZ has estimated the impact from the changes on home loan rates would be a 20 basis-point rise. But the plans have been hit by criticism from business industry groups. Leeann Watson, chief executive of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce said an extra $20 billion was a significant amount of money the banks would have to find. “For local businesses on the
He says the technology is getting better all the time. “It can measure the health of the animal and its movements. “If it’s unwell, it will move differently, and this is picked up. Or if the cow is on heat, which means it is ready to be inseminated.” Cows already have radio frequency ear tags that can identify the animals as they move into the shed. This is mandated by the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme. However, McNee says the Fitbit technology takes things to the next level: “It’s a little more expensive than a human Fitbit because these devices need to work in adverse conditions. They get bashed around, rub up against things, get rained on and get exposed to the sun. “They have longer lasting batteries; typically they last three to six years. “Farmers are increasingly finding them to be a good investment.”

Technology investment is paying off for New Zealand’s dairy farmers. In the past year the industry produced 21.2 billion litres of milk containing 1.88 billion kilograms of milksolids. That’s up 2.4 per cent on the previous season. We’re producing more milk with fewer cows. The total cow population decreased 0.9 per cent on the previous year. Cow efficiency is improving at a clip. Wayne McNee, CEO of LIC, says some of the growth in milk production has come from farmers learning to do more with less. He says we are world leaders in precision farming. We’re also seeing the benefits of the same technology revolution that has changed almost every other aspect of our lives. One of the latest technologies helping farmers to improve yields is something McNee describes as “Fitbit for cows”, in ef-
fect a wearable computer. “Fitbit for cows is a relatively new technology in New Zealand. “It’s something that has been used a bit overseas. It’s starting to become more popular in New Zealand as a way of monitoring cow performance and cow health. The technology is getting more sophisticated.” He says at first it was a struggle to adopt the technology in New Zealand. “Our cows walk around a lot more than cows overseas who often live in barns or similar systems. “Here they are mainly free range. And they are out in all types of weather. “That meant it took time to get the technology to work here, but that’s been cracked now.” McNee says LIC is starting to see farmers use the technology. They are also investigating how they will use it and link it into existing systems. Fitbit for cows is an Internet of Things (IoT) application, essen-

OUR VIEW
We all have something to give I
t’s often said that a community grows rich on the unpaid work given by hundreds of people that most of us never see – our volunteers. They’re the people of all ages who do the things, fill the gaps that few of us notice until we have a time of need ourselves. They’re the unsung heroes who work without expecting reward. Thursday was International Volunteers Day, a day when we should have all stopped for a moment and given a thought or two to the people in our own community who fill the gaps that most of us do not see. For decades groups and organisations that run on grants and donations have ticked along because there were people who were
happy to help their cause without wanting recognition – or payment. Those people were volunteers and our history is peppered with people who have given quite extraordinary amounts of their own time to make life better and easier for someone else. Volunteers are the people who make a difference, a difference in other people’s lives. They give the greatest gift anyone has to give – their time. And often no one but the recipient notices.
It’s easy to say you’re time poor, that you have barely enough minutes in your day to attend to whatever makes your own world tick – work, recreation, hobbies and family life. But check out many volunteers, they are often the busiest of people, holding down jobs, raising a family but also finding it in their hearts to give a little of that precious time to someone else. Unfortunately, the pool of volunteers is dwindling. Maybe it’s work pressures, maybe it’s that we’re less willing to be part of someone else’s world, but whatever the reason, volunteers are thin on the ground, becoming thinner, and as a community we’re poorer for that. The Ashburton District has
always prided itself on the strength of its volunteer network, but it might be time for a reality check. Calling in on two volunteer celebrations this week, it was very clear that the majority of those prepared to give their time to others are not exactly young. Yes, the retired have more time on their hands, but it’s important to know there is a new wave of volunteers coming through to take their places when they become those who need others to help make their own lives a little brighter. Rosebank manager, Sue Prowse, succinctly summed up the essence of volunteering when she thanked the team of volunteers who spend time with their residents. One act can make all the dif-
ference. A smiling face can say it all ... No person is so poor as to have nothing worth giving ... were phrases she used. And they so neatly summed up the power of volunteering. And volunteers will tell you that giving a little of your time to someone else brings its own rewards in the feel-good buzz you get from knowing you’ve made a difference, no matter how small, in someone else’s life. We all have things we’re passionate about, all have interests to share, wouldn’t it be great if we could all find just a little time to share those passions and interests with someone whose life needs a little enrichment. A smile, a few kind words, a touch, they all make a difference.
audience rioted. They poured onto Queen Street, smashed shop windows and left behind broken bottles, rubbish and upturned cars. In 1987, Soviet leader Mikhail S. Today’s highlight in history: On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii as part of its plan to conquer Southeast Asian territories; the raid, which claimed some 2400 American lives, prompted the United States to declare war against Japan the next day. In 1796, electors chose John Adams to be the second president of the United States. In 1909, in his State of the Union address, President William Howard Taft defended the decision to base US naval operations in the Pacific at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, instead of in the Philippines. In 1911, China abolished the requirement that men wear their hair in a queue, or ponytail. In 1917, during World War One, the United States declared war on Austria-Hungary. Technology is your friend T
echnology can be a wonderful thing. When I think back to how things were when I was delivering newly purchased appliances to customers back in the early ’70s, to what we have now, the world has come a long way. This was reinforced recently when watching a demo for a customer at a local big box retailer. The fact that the “smart fridge” is even a thing, was hitherto lost on me. I’ll attempt to recap some of the main features of this fridge but I am sure there was much I missed. It appears the fridge has cameras internally and constantly assesses what it has on board. It basically tells you what you need more of and from memory even monitors the nutritional quality of what you have and recommends items. The fridge can also tell you who is at the door, will play your phone, music and TV on the screen on its door. I was like, “WTF???” Back in the ’70s it was just a box you plugged in and it kept things cool. Biggest innovation back then was the dual temp – the twodoor fridge-freezer. Also back in the 1970s there

was aerial top dressing. But not like we have today. Back then it was all the pilot’s eye when it came to maximising where the load was dropped. Now, everything is GPS referenced to optimise the drop and ensure the customer is getting maximum value for money. So, these thoughts, rather randomly, led me to think about our increasingly busy roads and the way we use them. On a recent trip up the road to Christchurch I sat on 100km/h, or less when warranted, all the way. Everything passed me, and I mean everything. Every single person was, for whatever reason, utterly unable to make the journey on that road and keep to the speed limit. Not everyone would have been running late for something, for many of us, pushing the boundary is just a habitual thing.
The limit is 100km/h, so let’s sit on 110, 115, 120km/h. I’m not trying to appear holier than thou on the subject ’cos that boundary pusher over the years has frequently been me. Be honest, we all have. But how close are we to a new thing now? Imagine your car has an intelligent box on board and it receives data from a GPS system that basically controls and limits your speed. So on SH1 the GPS sends the 100km/h limit and your car is limited electronically to that, but as you pass through zones with lower limits, the GPS sends that info to your car and it obeys accordingly. I can see a few of my car buddies throwing their hands up in horror at the thought of this state control of conventional liberties. But really, if we are serious about making our increasingly busier and dangerous roads more safe for everyone, why not? The speed bunnies can still get their thrills on properly sanctioned tracks developed especially for that purpose. The open public road is not the place to give her a squirt and see what she will do. Bring it on I reckon. Imagine some of those
country intersections that have cleaned up way too many people? The GPS would slow you car automatically, or even stop it. Lives would not be lost. Now, not being a techno nerd myself, I have no idea how this would practically work. Whether there would be some way of retro-fitting this technology to existing cars, or whether it would have to be a feature in future builds. I imagine electric powered cars would be a relatively easy proposition. It would also bring to an end a situation we have all witnessed on road trips where someone sweeps past you from behind, often on yellow lines on a hill with a blind bend ahead. I often wonder what the inside of a person’s head who would do that would look like? There is no shortage of them, and they’ll be out there plying their particular brand of danger again these holidays. Be careful. And good luck! LEGEND LENDING A HAND
Mid Canterbury’s newest boxing gym officially opened its doors on Thursday, but the launch of Garage Box in Methven wasn’t the only reveal made during the occasion. As well as the official opening of the new space inside the recently established Garage Gym in the heart of the Methven township, a brand new boxing charity event, to be held in Ashburton next year, was announced. Dubbed Fight Night South, the event will see 20 boxers compete over 10 fights at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre in June as part of a fundraiser for White Ribbon. And Gary Manning, the man behind both Garage Box and the charity night called in a heavy-hitter to help him mark the occasion – former commonwealth cruiserweight champion and boxing heavyweight, Shane Cameron.
Cameron came to Methven for the afternoon, spending his time there meeting locals and talking all things boxing. “This is a really great wee space,” he said of Garage Box. “It’s heartening to see places like this opening up around the country and to see the popularity of boxing growing with it, the more of these the better because it exposes more and more people to the sport.” Manning and Cameron have worked together before, with the Mountain Warrior a part of the second Dubliner Fight Night held in Methven, so the duo working together on a charity boxing event is no new mission. Manning realised there was an opening in the market, and using the blueprint from two successful events in Methven, he’s decided to branch out into the community
Boxing legend, Shane Cameron was in Methven on Thursday to help launch Garage Box and a new charity boxing event to be held in Ashburton next year. even further. “We thought there would be enough interest to take it out further in Mid Canterbury and give Ashburton a chance to hold one of these events and having Shane on board is huge for us, he’s been fantastic,” Manning said. Cameron said he was looking forward to seeing what the night would bring and from what he’d already seen he expected the action to be of a high standard. “I’m very excited to help launch Fight Night South Ashburton,” he said. “I know first-hand that there is some real boxing talent in the Ashburton region and I’m looking forward to meeting the fighters and to see who shines on the night.” Fighters are being sought for the night
now and anyone interested is encouraged to visit the event website, www.fightnightsouth.co.nz Meanwhile, Manning will have plenty happening to keep himself busy up until the event with bookings coming in thick and fast for the classes being held at Garage Box. He and fellow trainer, Joe Keepa – who have both completed Cameron’s Counterpunch coaching course – will hold six different classes for all varying age groups and levels of experience and also a class for youngsters to get them involved as well. “The initial feedback has been great, we’re really excited to get things happening,” Manning said.

Youthful Hawke Cup side By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
A youthful looking Mid Canterbury representative cricket side will take to the wicket today for the first Hawke Cup match of the season against South Canterbury in Timaru. Coach Garfield Charles has named four Hawke Cup debutants in his XI for the match which also includes four players who are still playing school-aged cricket scattered among some experienced shoulders. Ben Innes, Devon Flannery, Tom Middleton and Harry McMillan will all make their first appearances in the Hawke Cup off the back of some solid form in recent matches around Canterbury. McMillan comes into the side from the St Andrew’s College 1st XI and will be joined by team-mate, Ben Innes who has also earned himself a call up for the match which begins today. Both Devon Flannery and Tom Middleton have come into the side from the Ashburton College 1st XI. The experienced shoulders of James Southby will again captain a side which features some regular names such as Nick Gilbert, Des Kruger, Bo and Jay Houston and wicket taking machine, Richard Turpie. Southby’s brother, William will wear the gloves. Mid Canterbury have already played South Canterbury this season, recording a comprehensive
win after bowling them out for 110 and chasing the required runs down with six wickets to spare. But Hawke Cup cricket is different and required a much stronger mental fortitude and Charles will have been keen to install that mindset in his side this week, particularly the new and younger players. A lot of the responsibility will again lie with Turpie to lead the way with the ball while opening batsman Nick Gilbert will be required to set the tempo from the outset. Meanwhile an all-Mid Canterbury Derby in the Canterbury Country combined competition will highlight local cricket action here this weekend. The unbeaten Tech Stags will be out to continue their hot run of form when they take on an in-form Allenton side this afternoon. Tech have been untouched and untroubled all season and were strong winners when the two sides met previously six weeks ago, but Allenton have been the rapid improvers of the competition and will be taking some confidence into today’s match. Ruiz, Joshua all set for Saudi rematch AP The thick, sparkling ring on his right hand and the diamond-studded watch around his left wrist were indications of just how much life has changed for Andy Ruiz Jr. since he became world heavyweight champion. It was another part of his attire that really stood out, however, when the portly Mexican came face to face with Anthony Joshua for one of the last times before their title rematch in Saudi Arabia tomorrow. For the final news conference ahead of the fight, Ruiz chose to wear a New York Knicks jersey – yet another reminder to Joshua of that fateful night at Madison Square Garden in June when he lost his three heavyweight belts in one of boxing’s biggest shocks in years. “That’s where I got the first victory on June 1 and that’s why I brought it,” Ruiz said, referring to his jersey. “I wore it to remind myself, ‘I’m the champ.’” And Ruiz has really made the most of his new status over the last five months. One of his first acts
was to buy a car for his mother, Felicitas, and he also showed off his lavish new home in California, replete with its fountain and pool, on his social media accounts. He had an audience with Mexico’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game. Basically doing things he could never have imagined when he used to mix cement for his father, Andres, as a youngster and, as recently as 2017, went a whole year without even fighting following a loss to Joseph Parker in his only previous world title bout. He was disregarded as a potential champion then, mocked for his flabby frame even though his fast hands and skills pointed to a boxer with talent. Ruiz is at pains to point out, though, that he is simply enjoying his life and not taking his eye off the ball – something Joshua says he did before the first fight. “There’s no way I’m going to let these belts go,” Ruiz said, looking at the WBO, WBA and IBF straps in front of him. “I’m going to die trying. It’s been a roller coaster but now I’ve finally
made it all this way, there’s no way I’m going to let them go.” Ruiz knows he will be up against a different Joshua this time around. A more focused and determined Joshua, who knows he is suddenly fighting to rescue his career after being knocked down four times before the seventh-round stoppage in New York. The first ever heavyweight title fight in the Middle East, somewhat controversially arranged amid concerns over Saudi Arabia’s human-rights record, has been called the Clash on the Dunes. As for Joshua, he’s labeling it Back to 16 – a reference to his 16th professional fight when he became world champion for the first time. He says he is likely to weigh in at about 238 pounds (108 kilograms), which would be the lightest he has fought since 2014, and has been concentrating on sparring and the “sweet science of the sport” instead of bulking up and doing weights. He has even grown his hair into an Afro, as if he was boxing “in the 70s.” “I’m punching like a horse kick-
Andy Ruiz Jnr ing back right now … loose and heavy, rhythm and flow,” said Joshua, adding that he “didn’t lose heart or any fire in my belly” after getting beaten by Ruiz for the first loss of his professional career. “There’s no fear in my heart, no fear in my mind,” he said. “I was asked if this would be a special moment (to regain his
belts). I said, ‘No.’ I know I belong there. It’s not special. “When I regain those belts, I’m probably just going to keep cool and stay focused. It’s not a time to celebrate.” The fight will take place in the Diriyah Arena, a purpose-built venue with a capacity of 15,000 spectators that has been built in six weeks and will be taken down within two days of the bout. No stranger to hyperbole, Joshua’s ambitious promoter, Eddie Hearn, is comparing the occasion to the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila – two famous heavyweight fights from the 1970s which were held in unlikely global locations. With Joshua earning as much as a reported $70 million and Ruiz reportedly $10 million, the attraction for fighters is obvious. Joshua isn’t sure what type of atmosphere he’ll be fighting in, although it is unlikely to be anything like the raucous occasions he is used to in Britain. Not that he cares, given the precarious situation his career is in. “I’m not here to put on a show,” Joshua said, sounding all business. “I’m here to win.”

New tournament a winner By Matt Markham
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
When Mid Canterbury Softball Association sit down at the end of the season and look back on what they’ve achieved over the past few months, they’ll be counting the introduction of a new-look fast pitch tournament as a great success. The new-look competition, played on Wednesday nights, finished up this week with a
gripping final between two very good sides, played in very trying conditions. With howling winds ripping across Argyle Park, players had to call on all of their skills to get the desired result. The competition rounded off with the Rainer Renegades and the Retread Diamonds locking horns. After rushing out to an early lead the Renegades had to with-
stand a late comeback from the Diamonds, who got within two runs of their previously unbeaten rivals. With a final score of 18-16, the result reflected a very entertaining final. A third and fourth playoff was held between the Devon Tavern Hampstead Hawks and the Rusty Demons, with the Hawks emerging victorious, 13-2. Life member Dave Waaka pre-
sented the trophy to the winning side. Meanwhile, normal Saturday softball returns today with Under 7, Under 9, Under 13 and Under 16 action in the morning before before senior mixed action in the afternoon. In one match it’s an all Hampstead affair with the Heat taking on the Inferno while it’s an all Demons battle in the other with the Renegades and the Rebels.

Razor preparing for moment of truth Scott Robertson is set for his moment of truth in his quest to become the next All Blacks head coach. Robertson is set to have his interview with New Zealand Rugby on Monday, at their headquarters in Wellington, as he puts forward his case to replace Steve Hansen in the top job. Robertson will present to the panel, which consists of New Zealand Rugby chairman Brent Impey, former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry, NZR Chief Executive Mark Robinson, NZR Head of High Performance Mike Anthony and former Silver Ferns Coach and High Performance Sport New Zealand director Waimarama Taumaunu.
He will do so alongside his proposed All Blacks coaching team, with it understood that his pitch will include respected Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan and Hurricanes assistant Jason Holland. Robertson had approached Tony Brown to join his team, but Brown opted to stick as an assistant with Jamie Joseph, who resigned as Japan head coach. “It was a tough phone call to make. “We had planned for a while to work together. He showed his hand to work with Jamie – and his loyalty. I appreciate it was a tough call for him to make to me.” He said he and his family were ready for the step up in intensity
Scott Robertson and profile if he got the job. “I’m really mindful of the status that it holds. It’s one of the biggest jobs in the country, as we know. “My wife Jane is in, we’re all in.
I’ve got three young sons who really understand – well, I’m not sure the youngest one understands but if we’re all happy at home he’s happy. It’s a real passion of mine, I love what I do and the opportunity doesn’t come around very often. “I’ve got my formula and I’ve worked really hard coaching schoolboy rugby through to club rugby and to Super Rugby. “All the learnings along the way can help me in my quest to be All Blacks coach. “It’s up to them whether they feel that experience is enough. I think it was shown in the most recent tournament; the right person for the job is the key ingredient.”
Passionate Israel Folau supporter Alan Jones has slammed Rugby Australia for its handling of the cross code superstar’s saga and also hit out at the governing body’s failings in a host of other areas. Jones, who coached the Wallabies in the 1980s, was scathing of CEO Raelene Castle and outgoing chairman Cameron Clyne for taking the game to the brink of oblivion with a series of poor decisions. She has been in the top job for nearly two years and Jones wrote in a column for The Australian that “the lady is surely delusional” if she intends to steer the ship for the next four years to complete a “strategic overhaul” of a sport that’s in crisis. - NZME
Gunners under fire Not since 1977 have things been this bad at Arsenal. The struggling Gunners slumped to a 2-1 home loss to Brighton in the Premier League yesterday, taking the team’s winless streak to nine games in all competitions – its worst run in 42 years. Interim coach Freddie Ljungberg clearly hasn’t found a quick fix to all the problems that plagued the team under Unai Emery and the Gunners looked completely shorn of confidence against a Brighton side that dominated large parts of the game. “I don’t know what to say. I have the feeling that whatever we do it doesn’t come out right,” Arsenal right back Hector Bellerin said. “I am lost for words a little bit.” - AP
Celtics crush the Heat Jaylen Brown banked in a 3-pointer and blew a kiss to a former teammate. He wanted to remind old friend Kelly Olynyk that he can shoot from the outside. Brown scored a season-high 31 points, Kemba Walker had 28 and the Boston Celtics beat the Miami Heat 112-93 yesterday. “That was for Kelly. I don’t know if he was over there,” Brown said of his kiss. “That’s my guy. That was all love right there. I was showing some love. He said I was going to miss, so I sent some love over to him.” Jayson Tatum added 19 points to help Boston improve to 8-0 at home. Brown connected on a season-high five 3-pointers, and Walker had seven assists and four rebounds with six shots made from beyond the arc. - AP

■■METHVEN
Jazzy’s star is rising Brent White has got a problem, but in all reality it’s not a bad one to have. The Ashburton-based trainer will take his stable star for a short trip up the road to Methven tomorrow to contest the feature race on the programme, the Green Mile – but what happens past that point is anyone’s guess. The five-year-old son of Auckland Reactor, owned by Dave and Gaye Luke, has been a victim of his own success. A winner of four of his past six starts, the exciting pacer is rapidly rising his way up the grades and the brutal nature of the New Zealand handicapping system means he’ll be soon left with few choices but to take on the best horses in the country. “We’re in a bit of a bad spot now,” White said earlier in the week. “Our options become a lot less limited and we’ve got some decisions to make as to where we plan for. “There’s the Ashburton Cup and then a race down in Central Otago, but after that it’s a little slim and I need to decide whether I spend some time trying to get him to go away cleanly from a stand start so we can have a look at the New Zealand Cup next year.” A winner on Show Day in emphatic fashion, Jazzy Star backed it up again with an equally as impressive win at Addington last week – on both occasions finding the front and taking the race by the scruff of the neck. Tomorrow that approach may not work. White’s been over the moon with the way the horse has come through the two runs, but from the outside of the second row,

In brief Memoriam for Chittick Leading thoroughbred nursery Waikato Stud has strengthened its relationship with the Matamata Racing Club in the creation of a fillies and mares’ race with special meaning. Appropriately, the race is named in honour of the late Lisa Chittick and will be contested at the MRC’s annual Premier meeting, Matamata Breeders’ Stakes day on February 22. The Lisa Chittick Plate will be an open 1400m race run under set weight and penalty conditions with a stake of $40,000. - NMZE

Jazzy Star will fly the Mid Canterbury flag in tomorrow’s Green Mile at Methven. rolling to the front and dictating terms isn’t an option. “The draw makes it hard, because it’s likely we’re going to be spotting some very nice horses a long distance at the top of the straight. “I’m not saying he’s out of it, but he would need a bit of luck I think. “If we could get onto the back of the right horse and get a nice drag into it, he’s got the speed to overcome them, but he’d need to be close enough.” Jazzy Star is one of the stars of the grass track feature tomorrow, but the field is chock full of rising stars including Nandolo, Smokin By, Heisenberg and Star’s Tonight. Outside of the White trained pacer, local connections in the
race come from Ricky May on board Kendra for Greg and Nina Hope and Carl Markham who handles grass track toff, All About Henry. White has two other horses on the float to head to the Methven meeting tomorrow, Rogie Falls and Wecandream, both of whom look strong chances if things go their way in their respective races. Tomorrow’s other feature is the Trotters’ Green Mile and John Morrison looks to have a nice chance as both a trainer and a driver with Smokey Mac. The former Southland-trained trotter won with authority first up for Morrison last week at Oamaru and comes up against a very even looking field for the one mile event.

Dual Hong Kong Horse of the Year Beauty Generation will be attempting to win his third successive Gr.1 Longines Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The New Zealand-bred galloper heads into the race off the back of two placings over a mile, but trainer John Moore remains confident with the son of Road to Rock ahead of his weekend assignment, where he has drawn barrier five. “I’m very happy. I know where most of the other horses will lay up and it should give the opportunity for Ka Ying Star to go to the front unless there’s some pace we don’t know about.” - NMZE
Patrick Erin back home Group One-winning stayer Patrick Erin has returned to the Wingatui stable of Brian and Shane Anderton. The son of Gallant Guru had spent the majority of the last two seasons in the care of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller, who guided him to victory in the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick. The eight-year-old gelding also recorded fourthplacings in the Gr.2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and Gr.3 Kingston Town Stakes (1800m). Patrick Erin was set to contest last season’s Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), however, an elevated temperature resulted in his scratching on the eve of the famous race. - NZME

Supera looks superior High-class mare Supera is likely to start a short-priced favourite to win her maiden Group One when she contests the Rydges Wellington Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham today. The Ken and Bev Kelso-trained five-year-old has compiled an impressive CV, with seven wins and four minor placings from just 15 starts. The patiently handled daughter of Savabeel finished runner up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) towards the end of her last campaign, before landing the Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m). She looks in ominous form this campaign, beaten a pimple when resuming and carrying topweight of 60kgs before dominating her rivals when winning the Gr.2 Tauranga Stakes (1600m) last start, despite racing three-wide throughout. “It was a very good win last start and her work has been excellent since,” Ken Kelso said. “She has improved and I am as happy as I can be heading into a Group One race.” The trip to Wellington holds no fears for Kelso and his temperamental mare, but he is hoping the rain stays away. “She has had a trip to Wellington previously and won over

Super looks to be a cut above her rivals at Trentham today. the course and distance. I don’t want to see the track deteriorate (currently a Dead 4) too much as there is a bit of rain forecast. “I think so long as it is no worse than a Dead 6, she should be fine. “She does like the firmer surfaces and really bounces off it.” A granddaughter of champion mare Ethereal, Supera is raced by Sir Peter Vela and was bred by
his Pencarrow Stud. “She hasn’t always been easy as she can be head-strong, but we just work around her,” Kelso said. “We have an excellent girl that rides her in the mornings and we just work with the horse. “If she was a maiden or a Rating 65 horse, you wouldn’t put up with it, but she is a horse with terrific ability.”
Kelso said safely through today’s exertions Supera was likely to contest the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. “We will just take it a race at a time, but the Zabeel Classic and the Herbie Dyke (Gr.1, 2000m) are on the radar, but we will get Saturday out of the way first,” he said.
Surgeonor chasing Group win
Jo Surgeonor has leapt at an opportunity to snare her first Group win with Showoroses at Ellerslie today. The Auckland trainer hadn’t planned on backing up the Showcasing filly after her all-the-way win at Ellerslie last weekend but when entries for Saturday’s Gr.3 Mitchell Family Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) were left open, she was quick to snap up a spot in the three-year-old feature. TAB bookmakers have shortened Showoroses from her $15 opening price to $12 in a market dominated by the unbeaten Nigel Tiley-trained Proisir gelding Riodini at $1.50. “She’s backing up and stepping up to 1400m for the first time but she seems really well,” Surgeonor said. “She’s come through last week well so we’re hopeful she can run well again. Nigel’s horse is going to be hard to beat but we’re happy to give her the chance.” Surgeonor trains a small team at Ardmore, primarily for owner Peter Walker and his wife Sherin, who race Showoroses. Walker was a part-owner of Fully Funded, who gave Surgeonor her biggest moment in racing when he won the 2017 Listed Counties Bowl (1100m) at Pukekohe.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker
Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): While you’re busy spurring yourself on to great achievements, don’t forget to check your current resources. What does your emotional and spiritual fuel gauge say? Is it time to plug in or gas up? TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): As if you needed another reason to exercise, you will be reminded that internalising the pressures of home and work is simply not good for you. All mental stress can be physically worked through today. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Those who are able to process a lot of information at once often mistakenly assume everyone can. All efforts made to communicate with those who process differently will be richly rewarded. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You may feel off-kilter now, and it will be important to trust your inner knowing, however irrationally it may seem to show up. Your whole being wants to move itself toward the homeostasis of love. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Instead of thinking in terms of belief, think in terms of functionality. Sort out what’s working from what isn’t, and prioritise your weekend according to the new order. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): To have access to all that comes with being in a relationship with you all the time – well, that only creates gluttony. Stop offering your complete package. That special should run for a limited time only. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Waiting for something major to happen is always a mistake. Doing something major is never a mistake. You’ll wonder how to steer things. Just shoot for the moon. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If something is a big deal to you, then it just is. You shouldn’t have to justify your feelings to anyone, least of all to yourself. In fact, if you can refrain from selfcriticism all day, then it would help mightily. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Happiness is preparing for a long-term goal while meeting your daily requirements for of-the-moment needs like beauty, mental stimulation, kinship and excitement. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): In a way, you’re a company in and of yourself. You hold meetings. You manage and produce. You scale as necessary. You change tactics, staff and leadership as needed to fit the demands of the market. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People will try to describe what you do or how you present. Even when it’s nice, the definition of others isn’t irrelevant. It just doesn’t matter very much. It’s more like a footnote in your experience, a context cue. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Whatever you enjoyed in the past with someone, it’s about to get a reboot. Things are different now, but there’s something wonderful about that difference if you just let it happen.
