Man airlifted after crashing off road By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter winch was required to lift a patient off the side of a bank near the Rakaia Gorge on Wednesday. The crash occurred after 2pm on the Rakaia Gorge Road on Wednesday when a motorcyclist went off the side of the road and down a bank. Fire crews from Methven and Hororata attended the crash along with St John ambulances. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said they responded with an ambulance and a rescue helicopter from Christchurch. A male patient was taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a moderate condition. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Brent Anderson said it appeared the man had suffered a broken leg. “He has gone off the edge

■■ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Changes in wind for council’s social housing role By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

While it is committed to ensuring there is affordable housing across the district for older people, the Ashburton District Council could be moving out as a frontline provider of those houses. Early last year the council signalled it would review its involvement in social housing and that could see it step back and move its entire stock of 100 plus properties into the hands of a private provider. Since then a review of options for the future have been on the

planning table, but is still to come up for councillor discussion. On of the drivers behind the council’s desire to take a long, hard look at its role as a housing provider were changes in the Residential Tenancies Act around insulation and heating, council business support manager Paul Brake said. It was the right time for the council to consider its future as a social housing provider and to look at the different ways local authorities around New Zealand were doing this, he said. “The council is committed to elderly persons’ housing, it’s just

how this is administered and managed.” The council had insulated every unit where it could gain underfloor access and where ceiling structure allowed, but some of its properties have steeply pitched roofs with no roof cavity for insulation. In addition, some of its housing stocks, the properties in Mona Square, are old and the council was already in talks with another social housing provider, about the future of the eight units. Two of the Mona Square properties are currently vacant. In September council staff were

charged with preparing a social housing plan for the future that would spell out a range of options in the way the properties were managed. Among those options are likely to be retaining the status quo or involving a private provider. Demand for the 112 units is consistently high and there is usually a waiting list. Under the council’s current policy the units must be self-supporting, with rents providing the funding pool for ongoing maintenance. Currently this is $200,000 a year but with reserves dwindling and

each unit likely to need between $40,000 and $60,000 spent on upgrades, the council has opted to look at its future role in elderly housing. Estimates for a rebuild could run to $150,000 per unit and the council would need to borrow this money. The council’s policy on elderly persons’ housing was adopted in June 2017 and is up for review, but this review is on hold awaiting a report on options that will drive councillors’ decision on the council’s continued role as a social housing provider.

Rural Support Trust comes to rescue By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Volunteers with the Rural Support Trust have been doing their bit to ensure that two high country stations are properly fenced after heavy rainfall in December. Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust deputy response co-ordinator Don Geddes said both Glenfalloch Station and Erewhon Station had been heavily impacted by heavy rainfall in December last year, causing slips and flooding that damaged and destroyed large sections of fences. “Just down the road from those stations there was barely any rainfall at all,” he said. Slips had left their mark at Erewhon Station while flooding and slips were responsible for the damage at Glenfalloch Station. Groups of volunteers, many of whom also volunteer in their local fire brigades, turned up to complete the much needed work, Geddes said. Geddes has been leading the work at Glenfalloch Station, while response co-ordinator Allan Baird has been leading the work Erewhon Station. Geddes said there had been five working days spent at Glenfalloch, while volunteers had spent three days at Erewhon. Baird approached both stations following the heavy rain and both put in applications for assistance. ■■ASHBURTON COLLEGE

New students and staff welcomed By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

New students and staff were welcomed to Ashburton College through their annual powhiri. The newcomers were led into the ceremony by Kaumatua Tipene Philip and welcomed into the school family by principal Ross Preece. Current and incoming students exchanged waiata, while Philip and Preece shared speeches. The powhiri was held outside the school’s whare wananga which recently had its carvings restored for the first time since the building was opened in 1997. The carvings were created by master carver Vince Leonard and were taken down in February last year to undergo restoration. After more than 20 years of weathering the carvings were very much in need of work, but their restoration has taken longer than anticipated, because of Leonard’s death part-way through the project. Fellow carver Damian Peeti, who had worked with Leonard on the original carvings, was able to step in and continue the work with the help of a team of college students. Their work in restoring the carvings was recognised following the powhiri with a presentation of gifts from Preece.

New students and staff were welcomed to the school via a powhiri yesterday.

The powhiri finished with the current school community welcoming in the new members of their community with a hongi. 070220-JPM-0012

Stuart farewells a lifetime’s work By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

It was a sight rarely seen today, auctioneers, pens of sheep and plenty of keen bidders. But yesterday, when stud breeder Stuart Sinclair put more than 350 of his breeding ewes up for sale, the crowds came and they clearly had money to spend, bidding was brisk as one by one the top class suffolk, south suffolk and cheviot ewes were sold. For Sinclair it was a bitter-sweet day. Yes, it wrapped up a 50 year stud stock legacy, but with money invested in irrigation and better money to be made outside the sheep industry, he’s happy his sons are walking down the cropping path. He admits he’s always been a stockman. He was given a couple of south suffolk ewes when he left school, they were followed by a few suffolks and then cheviots were added to the mix. Unusual in the stud sheep business, Sinclair stuck with the three breeds, carving out a huge reputation as both a provider of outstanding stud stock for sale and as a show ring exhibitor. He had his fingers crossed for a good sale but any stock left at the end of the day would be returning home to his Wakanui farm. “I’ll watch this with interest and I’m hoping some younger people will be among the buyers and they’ll start up their own stud,” he said. Sinclair decided prior to Christmas that the stud had to go and that kick-started a pretty involved process to reach sale day. It took a convoy of three trucks and an early start to move the studs from Wakanui to the showgrounds and each ewe arrived sporting a bright orange number tied to its fleece. They were put up for sale individually. From the first lot the indications were that the quality of stock on offer was going to attract competition. Bids flowed but with a huge yarding to get through, auctioneer Andrew Holt made it clear he wouldn’t be indulging tardy bidders. With the sale over, Sinclair made it clear he wasn’t washing his hands of his stock. He was keen to meet up with buyers, many of whom he already knew. You can’t be a 50-year breeder and just walk away, he said. “Yes I suppose it’s a bit emotional, but when you make up your mind you just get on with it really.”

Ready to farewell the work of a lifetime, Stuart Sinclair at yesterday’s dispersal sale of his suffolk, south suffolk and cheviot stud ewes. PHOTOS SUE NEWMAN 070220-SN-0025

He’s kept a few young rams to show just to keep his eye in for the times he’ll be in the ring as judge, rather than exhibitor. The auction generated huge interest, with 60 registered bidders, some of those buying through agents. Buyers came from around New Zealand. Carrfields stud stock agent Callum Dunnett described yesterday’s sale as “unique”. The last stud dispersal he could recall was at least two years ago, he said. “This is Stuart’s life work, the stock are outstanding, it’s a great chance for young people to come into breeding.”

■■KIWIS ON BOARD

In brief

Ship’s coronavirus total soars NZME Japan’s health minister said another 41 passengers on the stricken cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan, have been diagnosed with coronavirus – bringing the total to 61. On Thursday, it was reported that a Kiwi onboard Diamond Princess had tested positive for coronavirus. According to Mfat and Japanese health officials, no more Kiwis have been diagnosed with the virus. The nationalities of the 41 the newly diagnosed passengers onboard the cruise ship are 21 from Japan, eight from the US, five from Australia, five from Canada, one from Argentina and one from Britain. Japanese health officials said that none of the newly diagnosed patients were displaying severe symptoms of the virus. Japanese authorities have tested 273 people on board the Diamond Princess, which was quarantined after a former passenger, who disembarked in Hong Kong last month, tested positive for the virus. “The results of the remaining 171 tests came out and 41 tested positive,” Kato told reporters. “Today they will be sent to hospitals in several prefectures, and we are now preparing for that. In total, out of 273 specimens, 61 tested positive,” he added. There are more than 3700 passengers and crew on the ship, which has been off Japan’s coast since Monday evening.

Jailed for fraud Sir Howard Morrison’s daughter Donna Mariana Grant will spend 12 months serving home detention for defrauding a tertiary education provider and a Crown agency of at least $1.3 million. As Justice Graham Lang announced her sentence there were sighs of relief, wails and tears in the public gallery. Grant, a prominent Māori performing arts educator, pleaded guilty to four fraud charges in the High Court at Rotorua in December. She was sentenced for three charges of dishonestly using documents and one charge of obtaining funding by deception. - NZME

Cyclone to affect NZ

Some passengers are seen on the Diamond Princess covering their faces as the cruise ship is anchored at Yokohama Port. PHOTO AP New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) said it was giving consular assistance to the sick Kiwi. Mfat would not provide any further information about the person besides saying they were one of 13 New Zealanders on the ship. At this stage, it is not known if anymore Kiwis on the cruise ship have been infected with the virus. The Diamond Princess left Jakarta on a 15-night round trip on January 20. The ship would now remain in Yokohama

under quarantine for at least 14 days. “The health and safety of our guests and crew remains our top priority. We continue to work closely with the Japan Ministry of Health on all protocols and procedures while ensuring the comfort of our guests,” the Carnival Cruise spokesman said. “Guests will continue to be provided with complimentary internet and telephone to use in order to stay in contact with their family and loved ones, and the ship’s crew is working to keep all guests comfortable.”

A tropical cyclone is forming near Vanuatu, with New Zealand’s official forecasting service saying its impacts could be felt here. The weather event was forecast to form over the weekend west of the tropical island, with MetService models expecting it to arrive next week. But there were no currently tropical cyclones in the Coral Sea or South Pacific Ocean areas, the organisation said on its website. However, environmental conditions were expected to become more favourable for a system to develop over the coming days. MetService meteorologist Andrew James said a clearer picture would be painted after the weekend. - NZME

■■RUGBY

BOLT FROM THE BLUE

He’s represented USA in a World Cup and is now embarking on a season playing for the Blues in Super Rugby. But at the end of the day, Tony Lamborn is just a guy who was born just down the road in Timaru and spent most of his childhood here in Mid Canterbury. PATRICK McKENDRY caught up with him this week.

I

f anyone at the Blues qualifies as a surprise package it must surely be Tony Lamborn, a flanker who represented the United States at the recent World Cup and an eyebrow-raising choice to start in the No.7 jersey against the Chiefs – an opportunity he took with both hands. Lamborn’s all-energy performance and flat-out pace over 25m also earned him the honour of going into the history books as 2020’s first Super Rugby try scorer and this week the 28-year-old revealed if he hadn’t been called up by Blues coach Leon MacDonald he would probably be working as a builder in Hawke’s Bay for his brother Sam. “I caught the ball and looked ahead and saw there was no-one in front of me,” he told the Herald this week of his try following a TJ Faiane midfield break. “I figured there was someone behind me so I just had to give it my best shot. “It didn’t click until after the game when a few people messaged me saying ‘first 2020 Super Rugby try’. “I was full of adrenaline and happy to dot down. “I’m not a big person for scoring tries – I’d rather be the one to get the turnover and someone else score it in the corner.” It’s an old-school attitude from a player who has done it the hard way, one who could probably teach his new team-mates a bit about resilience. Born in Timaru and brought up in Ash-

Tony Lamborn in action for the USA during the Rugby World Cup last year. burton, Lamborn left school at 16 and was determined to give rugby a proper crack. “I knew I had something there,” he said. “I knew I was naturally pretty gifted – a few of my friends and coaches said that. “I went up there and gave it a good shot and managed to make the academy. “I made the Magpies’ full squad in 2011 or 2012 so I’ve been around for a while. I played a season for the Hurricanes and finished up there when we won it [2016].” That year Lamborn travelled to the USA where his father, Jack, was born, and played in the MLR professional league. He made his test debut for the States the same year and represented the Eagles at last year’s World Cup in Japan. “I always knew that was an option,” Lamborn said of representing the US. “Obviously when I made the Hurricanes

I wanted to give the All Blacks a good crack but in the No.7 jersey those days was Ardie, who had just made, it, Sam Cane … It was a tough decision to make but once I made it I wanted to give 100 per cent to the States and there was no turning back. “I haven’t regretted it at all.” At the World Cup, Lamborn’s team lost all four matches to England, Argentina, France and Tonga. “I didn’t enjoy losing so much; I knew we were a much better team than that and it was pretty frustrating to go down, especially when we were leading against France – we could have beaten them – and Tonga in the last game.” But the opportunity and occasion – witnessed by mum Sari and wife Abby – made it all worthwhile. His Blues call-up came as a result.

“Just seeing how proud my family was,” he said of his World Cup highlight. “That really made it for me and I knew then that that was the best decision I could make – playing for the US. Even though my old man Jack is an All Blacks supporter, he was also very proud of me. “I’m grateful Leon and Tom Coventry noticed my form during the World Cup and liked the style I bring. “They thought I’d bring a different attitude and personality to change things up here. “I think the boys were a bit shocked at the start because I’m a bit out there. “I guess you could say I’m a bit crazy – I enjoy rugby but I also enjoy the banter with the boys and some weren’t quite used to that but they’ve taken to me with open arms.”

Media merger plans to press ahead By Pattrick Smellie

Neither Faafoi nor NZ First’s broadcasting spokesperson, Jenny Marcroft, made any mention of the other media rescue package that has been mooted, whereby the government would legislate to allow the country’s two largest newspaper producers, NZME and Stuff, to merge. NZ First leader Winston Peters backed that proposal at a press conference shortly before Christmas, which was attended by NZME chair Peter Cullinane, chief executive Michael Boggs and NZ Herald managing editor Shayne Currie. It would see the combined news business promise certain levels of coverage, maintenance of print newspaper titles and reporter numbers for two to three years, before being renegotiated. Marcroft said NZ First supported the investigation of a combined TVNZ/RNZ entity, saying “a strong media environment is critical for a healthy democracy”. “It is a New Zealand First policy and position to support and strengthen public sector media and the need to protect and future-proof TVNZ and RNZ. We need to see what the options are, the design and cost, and the likely timeframes.”

before the business case is completed. “It is about establishing the best way of providing New Zealanders with a range of trusted news, information, and entertainment that reflects New Zealand — its diversity, history, and aspirations. At the same time, we need to ensure any new public entity has the flexibility and the strength to meet future change and challenges,” said Faafoi, who confirmed NZ on Air would “continue to have an important role to fund local content for both commercial and non-commercial media outlets.”

Kathmandu Holdings said samestore sales, those through stores owned 12 months or more, rose 1.5 per cent in the 26 weeks ended January 26, although margins have declined. However, Kathmandu’s statement confused the reporting period by also stating it will post a 40 per cent earnings boost for the half-year ended January 31, thanks to the $A350 million Rip Curl acquisition completed late last year. A company spokeswoman told BusinessDesk that its statement including both periods is correct. Rip Curl generated a profit of $27.2 million for the 2019 financial year and is expected to add at least 10 per cent to Kathmandu’s pershare earnings. Kathmandu is the latest to identify a shift in shopping patterns to the heavily discounted events of Black Friday in November and Box-

ing Day, saying it experienced low foot traffic in between. Kathmandu said in the 26 weeks ended January 26, gross margin is 1.4 per cent below the first half of the period year, due to year-onyear foreign currency movement. “The Christmas trading period has seen a further shift towards Black Friday and Boxing Day events. Low December market foot traffic between these two events, unusually hot weather, and bushfires in Australia, have combined to moderate first half sales,” Xavier Simonet, chief executive officer of Kathmandu Holdings, said in the statement. The retailer said online sales are up by 30 per cent versus the same period last year, and its Oboz footwear division’s sales are up 10 per cent. Kathmandu said its diversification strategy is already showing benefits, with Rip Curl’s total sales for the first three months under

Kathmandu’s ownership expected to be more than 2.7 per cent higher than the comparable period last year. The company said it is actively monitoring any supply chain developments as a result of the coronavirus outbreak in China. However it said it doesn’t expect a material supply impact from coronovirus in the short term, and consumer demand impact so far hasn’t been significant. “The Group has mitigation plans in place if there is a prolonged disruption to our Chinese suppliers.” Earlier this week Briscoe Group managing director Rod Duke told BusinessDesk the retailer has cancelled a buying trip to China as a result of the outbreak. Kathmandu will release its full result for the half year on March 30. Shares in the retailer were up 7.9 per cent higher at $3.29 on Friday morning, having risen by 39.4 per cent over the past 52 weeks.

Pilots issue global warning over airport runway By Grant Bradley NZME

A pilots’ group has sent out a global warning over the deteriorating state of Auckland Airport’s runway where big chunks of concrete have broken off. The International Federation of Air Line Pilots has sent out a safety bulletin warning its members to take extra measures to ensure they have contingencies for operating at the airport. “As these runway closures are not planned and are unable to be forecast, it is suggested that pilots should always carry a technical alternate for Auckland. Alternatively, consider carrying a minimum of 20

minutes extra holding fuel for arrival at Auckland,” the Canada-based federation has warned its membership of more than 100,000 pilots. The bulletin posted overnight Thursday follows Thursday’s second short notice closure of the runway in two weeks because of debris on it. Flights had to be diverted to other centres in both cases. Auckland airport yesterday announced it was carrying out a formal review of the two recent incidents. The federation safety bulletin, prepared with input from New Zealand pilots, says the runway has been deteriorating over the past few years and there had been 15

short notice closures. While the airport company has not released details of the problem, including the scale of repairs and where damage is occurring, the bulletin says large scale work is planned including replacement of the concrete slabs near touchdown zones. “However, this work will not begin until later this year and will take some months to complete.” The bulletin says that because the airport has just one runway there is no contingency when it is closed at short notice. This increased the risk when flying to Auckland without an alternative.

move to examine such a merger. “It’s well known that New Zealand’s media sector, both public and private, is facing unprecedented challenges with competition from the likes of Google and Facebook, declining revenue shares, and changes in when and how audiences access their information and entertainment. “That presents risks for the future viability of New Zealand’s public broadcasting operators, RNZ and TVNZ, and the government needs to address those risks.” There will be no final decisions

The government is pressing ahead with plans to merge its radio and television assets into “a new public media entity as an independent multiple-platform, multi-media operation”. Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi announced that accounting and consulting firm PwC will lead work on the business case that the Cabinet will need to see to assess how and whether such a new entity can be made viable. A report is due mid-year. RNZ and TVNZ currently operate on completely different models, with their only common source of revenue being grants from the public funding agency for broadcast media, NZ on Air. However, RNZ operates an adfree model and can seek funds only from NZ on Air and through content sharing arrangements with other publishers and broadcasters. These have proliferated in recent years, although their commercial terms are undisclosed, so their contribution to RNZ’s financial position is unknown. TVNZ, by contrast, is primarily funded by commercial advertising and exists as a state-owned enter-

OUR VIEW

The validity of suppression when most seem to know

N

ame suppressions are put in place by the courts and it’s imperative that we, as the society of this country abide by the laws that sit around them. But it’s always an interesting debate, on whether the validity of such suppressions actually serve a purpose, or set a barrier that those with hardy enough souls are willing to break. Anyone out there in society, with a willing attitude and some solid tactical nous can find the name of anyone who’s been placed under suppression orders without too much trouble, that’s just a known fact. People talk and these days people talk online, which leaves a digital footprint, meaning that

anyone with access to the internet can usually sleuth their way to finding out what is supposed to be unknown. So, in some ways – particularly post a guilty verdict, you could see how some might struggle to understand why such orders remain in place, especially when reasons why are also supressed. That’s the case in the long and high-profile case of murdered British backpacker, Grace

Millane which again came to prominence yesterday when an Auckland businessman became the first person to be charged by New Zealand Police with a breach of suppression orders from both before and after last November’s trial in Auckland. And it’s an intriguing situation. Police have confirmed there were almost countless breaches of the suppression orders put in place, with media outlets across the globe naming the individual involved and social media users in New Zealand doing exactly the same. Most were let off with a warning, but yesterday’s appearance for Leo Molloy unfolded a little differently than the rest as he found himself in front of a judge.

I set the challenge in the newsroom yesterday among a few reporters to see how long it would take to find the name of the man found guilty of murdering Millane. It took me less than a minute and a half. A few clicks here and there and I found it. Not too hard with the right kind of wording in your search. Whether that makes it right or not, perhaps is a bit of a moot point. But when something is already so easily accessible, and the damage is largely already done, it’s hard to understand why it would continue – especially with a guilty plea in place. I’m by no means saying Molloy’s breach is acceptable. Laws are laws and rules are rules and they have clearly been broken.

But this is an extremely unique situation in that there were so many breaches yet to this point, only one is being brought into the public light for criticism and analysis. From the outset, this particular case has had more attention that many most people would remember and because of that and the natural inquisitive nature of people led to most finding out the name a long time ago. It’s a perfectly legitimate question to ask that had this been any other case would we be seeing the same situations unfolding had breaches also occurred. Logical answer is probably not.

Back to school politics Y

es! School is back and it’s great to have our children excitedly coming into the classroom. Of course, we totally get many of our parents who are as happy as we are, the last couple of weeks of the holidays can be a trying time. Thousands of students have returned to school this week, to new classrooms, new friends, new teachers and back into the social cauldron that is school life. Quite a few of the people I meet say they couldn’t or wouldn’t do the job teachers do. Many teachers say they wouldn’t do the job a principal does. Those statements underline the nature of teaching and working in schools – it is a challenging career. I’ve always said, on a good day the job can really stretch your mental resolve. It is enough to plan, prepare and teach anywhere from 2430 children without having to manage their lack of food, their tiredness due to late nights, their lack of language due to parenting by screen or their lack of social skills and resilience because they have used tantrums to get what they want when they were younger. Schools operate close to 100 per cent of what they are capable of delivering and the last uncertainty they need is an election that makes schooling

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

an “issue”. I’m always perplexed as to why there is this political desire to fix our schools. What annoys me are the lies, told by both parties, about the response to education in recent times. On the left you have the Labour party claiming nine years of neglect. A handy line to use to blame our current state on the previous government. It’s a lie. The National party did not neglect schools, they built new classrooms, they forced national standards onto schools, they introduced Charter Schools – and, to be fair, they worked for providing an alternative approach for students who have not succeeded in other schools. The National party also scrapped our banked staffing, removing a school’s ability to accumulate credit to employ teachers in extra roles such as reducing classroom pressure or as special education needs co-ordinators. It is simply a lie to say National neglected schools – they were in boots and all.

Then on the right, the National party have been claiming that in the first two years as a Government, Labour have promised the world and not delivered anything. That is a lie. Since taking office Labour has instigated a massive review of the system, which now sits as a lovely piece of coloured A3 paper and not much more. They have extended the Mana Ake project from Christchurch into Canterbury and we, as schools ,can see the positive impact of this. They too have invested heavily in school property. Labour have also introduced a donations scheme and this has also made a positive impact. Labour has also rolled out a nation-wide response to special needs by introducing learning support co-ordinators. There are ten of them here in Mid Canterbury. Lies are told to cover the truth. The truth in our schools is that we as a profession have evolved from a superior-than-thou attitude where we held knowledge and imparted it to those who were sitting up, to a fusion of parent, teacher, counsellor, facilitator and tech guru. The truth is we know the issues we face. They are as complex and difficult to solve as the children who present them. What we need is the support to tackle them.

What we don’t need are lies. In the spirit of calling the election date to give certainty, in the spirit of choosing to not work with NZ First to give certainty, I challenge both parties to make it very clear from the start of the year – where do you stand on education. If successful, will the National party reverse education decisions made by Labour and re-introduce National Standards and Charter Schools? Will they scrap the recommendations from the education review? If successful, will the Labour party actually do anything with the review – they asked and got so much feedback from the profession. Will they continue the Mana Ake service, and extend it beyond Canterbury? And finally, will a local principal take his work seriously and stop stirring up trouble in the local paper with his completely baseless opinions? I don’t know but I do know one thing – it’s election year and, apparently, we as schools have issues that politicians know how to solve. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. The views expressed in this column are his and do not represent the views of his school, the Ashburton Guardian or the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association.

Treats–we’ve got you covered T

here’s a lot of pressure on Valentine’s Day. As the shops fill with panic-button red, heart-shaped merchandise and restaurants book up faster than a Donald Trump impeachment seminar, it’s

easy to feel more hopeless than hopeless romantic. So, in a move away from the fluffy teddy bears and boxes of chocolates, we’ve put together a list of activities that will have

you looking forward to February 14, no matter what stage your relationship is at. Whether you’re planning a treat for a long-term partner, testing the water with a new date, or celebrating “Palentine’s” with

an old friend, here are a few alternative Valentine’s Day ideas.

1.

Stargazing

The gift of tranquility

Look on the bright side of winter nights and put February’s early evenings to good use by investigating the night sky. The beauty of twinkling stars is one of the natural world’s most romantic phenomenons and a pleasure to share or enjoy all to yourself. And, for built-up areas, there are a number of apps that locate constellations when you hold your device up to the sky. If you share a curiosity of the natural world, enjoy going outdoors or feel like doing something different, things are looking up …

Escape together

Have a cook off

If you haven’t been to an escape room, you’re missing out. As far as a unique Valentine’s Day date idea is concerned, it’s a great way to assess each other’s problem-solving skills, as you need to use clues to solve puzzles and, eventually, escape within a certain time frame. Whatever escape room you choose, there’s no doubt you and your date will get closer — literally and figuratively — both during and after your escape.

4.

Ashburton Guardian 13

If you prefer to stay home, consider a fun and interactive cooking experience instead of ordering takeout. Try a “cook-off”-you each make a dish, then fill out score cards to determine whose skills are superior. Or, give each other a mystery basket of ingredients, and see what you can come up with.

5.

Dancing with the Stars, or YouTube?

Salsa dance gets the blood flowing. Tango is full of passion. And how can we forget the Forbidden Dance, lambada? Okay, so a dance lesson Valentine’s Day date might be unique, but since you usually have to register in advance, they aren’t great “last-minute” ideas. Enter, YouTube. Light some candles, let the wine flow, search for some dance lesson videos you both like, and get your giggle-engines going. It’ll be silly, but it’ll be fun. And more importantly, it’ll be free.

Car shopping, without the buying

Everyone has their dream car, that one vehicle that they’d move heaven and earth to have sitting in the garage, but the thought of selling a vital organ from one’s body to pay for it doesn’t quite feel right. So, why not get dressed up in your absolute best – pop a plum in the mouth, pretend for a few hours that you’re high class and go and test drive that car and at least pretend, even just for a moment that you’re living the high life with your partner at your side.

For a lifetime of passion This month, book a hearing health appointment for you and your loved one. Call 0800 522 422 today! For a limited time only.

Bubb, McCann do best Tessa McCann and Sam Bubb have claimed the Gala Cup Mixed Doubles title for 2020 with a dominant performance against a small but select field of competitors at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre. The tournament, which was shifted to Waitangi Day from the traditional Gala Cup weekend in a fortnight in the hope of attracting more entries, drew just the four combinations – but tennis organisers are hoping that they can build from here for the future. While the tourney was short on entries, there was nothing lack-

ing in the quality department, with four strong combinations stepping out on to the courts. McCann and Bubb made light work of their first fixture of the day, beating Aiden Watt and Jess Aldridge 6-0, 6-0, but on the next court a much closer-fought battle was unfolding. In-form singles star Diego Quispe-Kim and his playing partner, Nishitha Maarka were tackling the mother-and-son duo of Jane and Connor Brosnahan. Quispe-Kim and Maarka claimed a comfortable 6-2 win in the first set to sit in the box seat, but the Bronsnahan pairing kept

fighting and through some clever play and strong work around the court they claimed back the second 7-5 to force the tie-break. Qusipe-Kim and Maarka managed to fend off the challenge though and take the match. They then turned around and faced Bubb and McCann in the second round but were humbled, losing 6-4, 6-1 as the strong pairing put one collective hand on the title, while team Brosnahan kept themselves in the mix with a win over Watt and Aldridge, 7-6, 6-3. That left the mother-and-son duo needing to beat McCann and

Bubb to make things interesting, but they had no answer, eventually losing 6-4, 6-0. Quispe-Kim and Maarka claimed their match against Watt and Aldridge 6-1, 6-3 to lock themselves into second for the tournament. The victory gave McCann her 12th Gala Cup victory across all disciplines and all grades, and brought her level with Ashleigh Leonard, who also holds 12 Gala Cup titles. Both have a scattering of victories in various events across women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles in both the A

grade and also in the A reserve grades. There’s a long way to catch up to the most decorated Gala Cup player though – Rhys Cromie has an impressive 19 titles next to his name. Both the Gala Cup singles and doubles are just around the corner, giving McCann another chance to add to the tally. Meanwhile, today interclub tennis action returns with round 2 leaders Fairton taking on Hampstead, second placed Methven tackling Allenton and Dorie and Southern squaring off in the third fixture of the day.

■■SOFTBALL

Kotiti finds his focus

Mid Canterbury softballer Kotiti Patea has strived to push himself beyond his home patch and his toil has been recognised at national level. Adam Burns caught up with the Ashburton teen about his softballing pedigree and why it has clicked for him By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

On the softball diamond, Kotiti Patea is not prepared to die wondering. The 17-year-old relishes the busyness of covering infield and seeks any opportunity to take on the opposition when rounding bases when batting. His agile approach has reaped rewards for the Ashburton teen and he is being swiftly tipped as one of the wider region’s most talented softballing exports. Now on the periphery of national selection, it seems only a matter of time until he dons a silver fern-embroidered cap. His entry into the code was a natural one as a youngster. Several family members were involved in the sport, Patea said. “My dad and his brothers and sisters were really into it when they were younger. “They played in Christchurch and my uncle played up in Wellington I think. “Dad had a big impact.” Originally from Christchurch, the Patea family moved to Ashburton following the Canterbury earthquakes. He previously played various positions in the backline in schoolboy rugby, however had curbed his involvement due to multiple concussions. Softball is now his primary focus. Patea’s father then set up the Fairton softball club about six years ago, and the club joined Mid Canterbury’s softball competition. “He coached me and a few of my school mates and it really just started from there.” It would not be long before Patea began to make an impression on the local diamond. In 2017 he was selected for the International Softball Academy (ISA) New Zealand Under-15 Boys’ squad. The ISA hosts international softball tours and academy programmes that expose players to elite softball and elite coaching, independent of Softball New Zealand. Hungry to develop his game against further opposition, Patea made a move to club softball in Christchurch where he joined Papanui, mixing it with numerous national representatives. He made appearances for Mid Canterbury at representative level. The milestones have continued for Patea over the past few months. He was selected for the Canterbury under-18 squad in November for the NZ U18 Boys’ Championship which was held in Palmerston North last month. “We spent a solid month just training as hard as we could, preparing for the tournament,” Patea said. “When it came to the tournament, all the hard work and effort showed.” Canterbury placed fourth in the 13team national championship event,

which was won by Hutt Valley. However, Patea was one of the Canterbury outfit’s standout performers across the event. His batting average of .471 was the seventh best of the tournament and he was selected in the second tournament team as an infielder. Patea then earned his biggest call-up of his young career when he was selected in the Junior Black Sox wider squad as a non-travelling member for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U18 Boys’ tournament which kicks off in Palmerston North in a fortnight. “I heard my name called and I just sat there in disbelief for a few seconds,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting it.” This was partly due to the fact that he was one of two players selected who were not part of a 32 man training squad assembled last year. “I was hoping to be picked but I wasn’t going to be fussed if I didn’t. “It’s a big opportunity but I wasn’t expecting too much.” As a player, Patea pushes himself to up the ante and savours the high-involvement from the second base fielding position. “I love playing there because the ball comes to you so often. “I like to be aggressive, whether it be running around the bases, trying to get extra bases off the hit, or attacking the ball which you would usually sit back and wait on.” He believes his unflustered nature has been a key attribute in game situations. As he guns for higher honours, Patea is always soaking up the knowledge and

guidance of his peers and coaches. Bulking up over the next year is another focus as he rounds the bases on his Black Sox homerun quest. More importantly, his passion for the game has never been greater, he said. “Last tournament has really made me fall in love with the game. “I felt great and I felt like I was playing at a different level.”

Above – Kotiki Patea’s rugby days are long gone; softball is now his game. Below – Kotiki is always looking to learn from those around him in the sport.

Stead saga latest puzzle in off-colour summer

W

ho knows how this plays out? The Black Caps head into today’s second one-day international against India with a chance to wrap the three-match series up with a game to spare. It is likely to be a boisterous crowd at Eden Park, sprinkled with a healthy dose of support for the visitors. However, whatever atmosphere infiltrates today’s day-nighter, it will pale in comparison to the fumbling disarray which New Zealand Cricket has heedlessly walked itself into in recent times. After they scrapped themselves to a consecutive World Cup final appearance in July, their fighting qualities and nice-guy shtick earned them affection both here and with the neutrals. They followed this with a 1-0 test series at home against England in November. Since then, it has been a plunge of the highest order. An unrehearsed and wearied test team were taken apart in Australia in one of the most humiliating series defeats in recent memory. Mystifying selections and team

mettle were swiftly put under the microscope. The management team were not exactly forthright during the post-mortem, where a lack of accountability appeared to be an underlying theme. It was then followed by a 5-0 clean sweep in a bizarre T20 series against the touring Indians, three of which astonishingly went to super overs. The disillusionment and discontent bubbling away among fans and pundits boiled over this week following the news coach Gary Stead was having a week off during the ODI series against India. Commentator and former captain Jeremy Coney lit the fuse during an interview on Radio Sport’s breakfast on the morning of the first one-dayer. Always such a

measured and thoughtful analyst, his unmistakable irritation and bemusement was all the more jaw-dropping coming from him. The instantaneous consensus seemed to be that Stead was waving the white flag, unable to cope with the intensive scrutiny which comes with poor results on the field. NZ Cricket boss David White attempted to downplay the matter, explaining that Stead did not want to take leave but his bosses insisted his workload be managed so he did not run into the

Kearney ‘not under threat’ Former Newcastle coach Nathan Brown has been contracted to the Warriors as an assistant for the 2020 season, but the club have batted away suggestions he is being lined up as a possible future head coach option, should things not go well this year. Brown, who parted company with the Knights in August last year, was brought in as a technical advisor at the Mt Smart club in November. He came across the Tasman for several extended stints in pre-season, mainly working with the hookers and the spine, and that has morphed into a role as one of Stephen Kearney’s assistants for the season. “He’s been a really good contributor since he joined the club,” said George. “He’s added a lot of value to not only the playing group, and in particular the spine and other parts of ruck play, but he’s been really good with the coaching staff and the staff in general. “He has a heap of experience of various clubs and at various success levels so he’s been a really good find, in terms of adding a new voice and mindset to the group. “Moving forward we have agreed he has a role to play here [for the season]. “ Brown will be in Auckland for the captain’s run before each home match, and involved in preparations 48 hours out from the game, and could also attend training sessions ahead of away matches. “Nathan is still working out what other commitments he has got,” said George. “There could be other opportunities to use him throughout the year.”

However George laughed off suggestions that Brown, who has coached more than 250 NRL games and almost 200 matches in England, could become an alternative option if things go south this year. “He is not here for that at all,” said George. “That’s never even crossed my mind. “It’s about getting good people involved in our club to get the results for our fans. I wouldn’t even consider that step at all. “I don’t even go there and to Nathan’s credit and Stephen’s credit it has never even come across our minds or even been spoken about. “People will always perceive certain things but this is about getting the right people in the right roles to add value to our club.” George says Brown’s involvement came by chance. “One day I was thinking about what could make a difference,” said George. “And good people, new voices and new energy always seem to work well.” George said Kearney and recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan both saw the benefits of the idea. “That shows the qualities of Stephen,” said George. “It’s always club first for Stephen so he was all about what could possible improve the club and not at any stage did he feel threatened by Nathan potentially coming in. “And the first thing Nathan wanted to do was talk to Stephen and make sure there was no awkwardness, and he has been extremely supportive of Stephen.”

Gary Stead.

same emotional fatigue as his predecessor Mike Hesson. “I understand the passion,” he said. It brings about further questions, not to mention both White and Stead’s ongoing suitability in their current positions. Does a separate management team need to helm the T20 format? Did Stead know what he was signing up for? Could there not have been a better time to take a break instead of right in the middle of our biggest summer in years? The

most disappointing aspect of this summer is that we have been bleating on for years for a meaningful summer against the big guns. It has finally come, including a return to the revered Boxing Day test, and prior to Wednesday’s unforseen turn of events, we had been left battered and bruised and with our tail between our legs. The irony is New Zealand pulled off their first win on Wednesday across any format since the first test against England in November with their head coach MIA. They did it by chasing down their biggest ever second innings total ever, led by an unbeaten 109 by Ross Taylor. For the players and administrators it could not have been more timely. But where does that leave coach Stead, and what will he return to? His side basking in a series win without his presence, or a playing group again licking their wounds after again falling short. As we know, a lot can happen in a short amount of time.

A distinct taste of O’Reilly Don’t be surprised to see the O’Reilly surname featuring prominently when harness racing returns to Mid Canterbury for the first time in 2020 tomorrow, when the Hororata Trotting Club meeting is held at the Mt Harding Racecourse. But instead of just one, or perhaps two, members of one of the district’s most famous racing families, it could well be the case of a scattering of features from various members of the clan on the big grass track. Brothers, Kerry, Gerard and Leo will all be out on the track driving as will Gerard’s daughter, Sarah. And on paper, all four look to have a bit of a chance of success too, at various points throughout the day. Kerry jumps on board the very promising debutant Jack’s Mate in the first race of the day in an effort to get things happening from the outset. The Stephen Williams-trained runner has been patiently handled through a multitude of workouts and trials around the district and will make his much awaited debut tomorrow with plenty of local support. A winner at last weekend’s Methven workouts, the big son of Superfast Stuart should be right in contention. “He’s ready for the races, but whether the occasion will get to him or not we’ll have to see,” O’Reilly said following last weekend’s workout victory. “He’s certainly a nice horse though and experience will do him well.” Jack’s Mate will be the first horse Williams has lined up at the races since 2009 with his last win coming in 2008 with Brylin Paige, who is the dam of the four-yearold he’ll take for a short float ride

to the Methven Racecourse tomorrow. The father-and-daughter combination of Gerard and Sarah look set for a strong showing too after last week’s workouts at Methven, where Mini Mine Yet steps out in a junior drivers’ event. The small but speedy pacer was excellent coming off the back of runners to win last weekend and will be looking to do the same from the second line tomorrow. Gerard also lines up Violet

Knight and the promising Ifyousayso during the day from his Rakaia stable. Leo’s hopes for the day are plentiful, with three of his own runners as well as a number of outside driving engagements as well. Of his three charges on the day, the evergreen Jerry Garcia – who nearly pulled off a brave victory last weekend at Orari – looks hard to beat based on that performance in what is a wide open

trotting affair later in the day. He also lines up Darryl Kerrigan and Sounds Lika Gem, both of whom are more than capable on their day. Shark chasing Group One

It’s hard to believe that outstanding galloper Te Akau Shark does not have a Group One win to his name, but the striking chestnut with a cult-following is strongly favoured to put that misnomer to bed today at Te Rapa. The Jamie Richards-trained gelding is set to commence a new campaign in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m), where TAB bookmakers have installed the five-year-old as a $1.70 favourite. The lightly-tried galloper finished second in a trial behind Catalyst at Matamata last month, before an impressive solo gallop between races at Ellerslie’s Karaka Million meeting and Richards is confident he can break his Group One duck this weekend. “He is forward enough,” Richards said.

“The plan has been to kick him off here before we look at Sydney and it would be great if he could get that Group One for his CV before he headed over the Tasman.” Despite the only obvious pacemaker being last-start Group One winner The Mitigator, Richards is not fazed by the potential sit-and-sprint tactics. “I am not too concerned about that. “From barrier 4, Opie (Bosson, jockey) has got options. The track looked a picture when we were there for the barrier draw (Wednesday) and hopefully it is going to play nice and fair. “He is probably best suited at a mile to 2000m now, but I think 1400m fresh really suits him.”

“He has had a trial and a decent exhibition gallop and he is a naturally fit horse that should be ready to rock ‘n’ roll.” Richards believes the Group Two winner that boasts placings in the Gr.1 Cox Plate and Gr.1 Epsom at his two most recent spring outings, has returned a stronger horse. “He is certainly carrying a bit more condition,” Richards said. “This is the first time that we have ever been able to give him a spring campaign and then bring him back for an autumn campaign. “Each year he has sort of gone off a little bit and needed a good spell, so I guess that is one query but we are very happy with him.

■■RUGBY

One All Black out; one All Black in As one All Black returns from injury for the Chiefs another heads to the sidelines for the Crusaders ahead of tonight’s Super Rugby clash. Lingering knee and groin injuries for Crusaders first five-eighth Richie Mo’unga means coach Scott Robertson has rearranged his backline for the round two match. Regular Crusaders fullback David Havili will start at first five-eighth for the first time at Super Rugby level to fill the gap left by Mo’unga, who left the field during the Crusaders opening round win over the Waratahs. Will Jordan moves to fullback and Sevu Reece lines up on the right wing. Despite the loss of 17-game All Black Mo’unga, the Crusaders will not be short on experience. The Crusaders have named seven All Blacks in the run-on side, including prop Joe Moody and wing George Bridge who start for the first time this season. Codie Taylor has been named to start this week, while captain Scott Barrett and the midfield combination of Jack Goodhue and Braydon Ennor, remain from last week’s starting team. Forwards Tom Christie and Cullen Grace also retain their spots in the match day 23 following debuts in round one. Chiefs coach Warren Gatland has also made some changes to his starting line-up which beat the Blues in the opening round. All Black Damian McKenzie makes his return to the field at fullback. McKenzie’s 2019 season was cut short by a knee injury and a tight abductor kept him out of last week’s game. The experienced Aaron Cruden will start in the number 10 jersey and will combine with Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi at halfback. All Black Anton Lienert-Brown will join Quinn Tupaea starting in the midfield at 12 and 13 respectively. Following an 80-minute performance in the season opener, prop Aidan Ross will

David Havili will start in the unfamiliar position of first five for the Crusaders in the absence of Richie Mo’unga tonight. again start at loosehead alongside hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho. Joining the pair will be All Black prop Atu Moli in the only change to the forward pack, replacing Nepo Laulala who has been side-lined with a knee injury. The locking combination of Tyler Ardron and Mitchell Brown alongside loose forwards Lachlan Boshier and Mitchell Karpik remain unchanged as does Chiefs captain Sam Cane at number eight.

Hooker Bradley Slater will be joined by experienced Bay of Plenty prop in Ross Geldenhuys who will debut for the Chiefs. Fellow debutant Waikato prop Ollie Norris will come off the bench for his first Super Rugby game. Naitoa Ah Kuoi and Pita Gus Sowakula will provide loose forward cover once again in addition to All Black Brad Weber covering Tahuriorangi at halfback. Gatland said he was looking forward to

seeing the Chiefs challenge the defending title holders. “Last week we achieved the desired result on the scoreboard, but there were plenty of learnings for the group,” Gatland said. “This week we need to take those learnings an implement them, ensuring we are patient with ball in hand and a nuisance when we are defending.” The Chiefs host the Crusaders in Hamilton tonight with kickoff at 7.05pm.

Simon Shuker’s Code Cracker

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There is warm affection around you, and you won’t mind if small surprises are part of the fun, although it doesn’t take much to get to a level of excitement you’d deem disconcertingly spontaneous. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): All of life is a rhythm. Finding yours can be quite natural, though you shouldn’t let nature dictate every move. Don’t underestimate your power to change one that’s not working for you either. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Entrances and exits have power you can use. Decide how you want to show up. Visualise the feeling you want to create stepping into the room – and leaving it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Are the earth, sun, moon and stars in selfless service to you? Probably not, but would it really hurt to move forward as though that were the truth? Certainly, the heavens have no agenda to oppose you. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): To like and accept yourself is the first level of being at peace. True effectiveness comes with moving up the scale. Work on being crazy about yourself? The success that rolls with this is spectacular. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): To check your ethics will be prudent, conscientious and more than most people will do. Most assume they’re right without giving a thought to the bigger picture and far-reaching consequences. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You don’t need to feel guilty, especially if someone is trying to make you feel this way in order to forward their own agenda. Relatedly, don’t be tricked into taking responsibility for someone else’s problems. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Games of chance will favour you. That doesn’t mean you should run to the casino and throw the dice, but if you have a little to risk on the whimsy of the fates you might enjoy the outcome. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Ever feel like you’re doing a bad impression of yourself? That’s social tension. To get comfortable, find the cause of discomfort. Probably, it’s a story you’re telling yourself. Or it’s your shoes. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It’s good to be royal! Your approval makes plans roll. This isn’t true in all areas of your life. Even blood-born monarchs aren’t kings and queens of everything. Celebrate what you rule when you do. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’ll do instead of worrying about what to do. This is where mistakes get made – excellent. Mistakes are the proof of life. Mistakes are the foliage around the roses of success. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The truth hurts. Though, to be fair, maybe it’s the artless way truth is often delivered that really causes the pain. You’ll have a message. Think about it, practice it, try and make it land as softly as possible.
