District on high fire risk alert BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A wet winter, a dry hot end to spring and endless hot summer days are every firefighter’s nightmare says Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess. Take a drive around the Ashburton District and the roadsides and riverbeds show just how strong the potential is for a high fire risk summer, he said. He’s urging people to take extra care over the summer months and play their part in ensuring what is likely to be a tinder dry district is kept as fire free as possible. The fire risk, he said is becoming critical. “We’re now in a situation where it’s getting worse day-by-day rather than week-by-week; every day it ramps up.” The Met Service is predicting temperatures will remain high until Tuesday when the odd shower is predicted over a few days before temperatures rise again towards the weekend. From midnight the district’s fire indices will move up to a restricted fire season across the district but Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Mid and South Canterbury principal rural firefighter Don Geddes said that unless there was significant rain in the coming weeks, a total fire ban could be looming. “Another three weeks of conditions like this and we could be looking at prohibition.” A restricted fire season means it is an offence to light any fire in the open air unless a permit has been obtained with the exception of barbecues in properly constructed containers may be used but must have a three metre area around them clear of combustible material. Geddes and his team are closely
monitoring the mid-south Canterbury area and he says there has been a significant deterioration in conditions over the past week. “If we don’t get any rain in the next week or two we could be looking at a total fire ban.” To the casual observer, conditions in Mid Canterbury were deceptive because of irrigation, but non irrigated areas told the real story, with paddocks looking as though they’d been sprayed, he said. “These conditions have arrived early. You might expect this in late January, early February. We’ve had our annual rainfall and those high temperatures and low humidity conditions are really sucking the moisture out of plants.” Geddes is urging people to be vigilant if they are using equipment that could generate a spark. He’s aware of fires this season that have started from a mower striking a stone and generating a spark that sat smouldering for some time before igniting. “The risks are there. It just needs a little bit of thought before you carry out any activity that could be hazardous. Do it, if you have to, in early morning or the evening and make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy and a cellphone you can call 111.” Farm machinery should be checked and well maintained before use to minimise the risk of fire, he said. “We’re urging you to think about what ever activity you’re carrying out and think about the potential it has to create a fire.” If people were unsure of what a fire season designation meant or they wanted to apply for a permit, this could be done on line at www. checkitsalright.nz, Geddes said.
The risk of fires has escalated with the possibilty of a total fire ban looming.
Firefighters’ fund needs donations BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Anticipating a long, dry summer and the likelihood of more rural fires, Advance Ashburton‘s executive officer Sandi Wood is highlighting a welfare fund she hopes the community will support. The Rural Firefighters Welfare Fund, held in trust by the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation, is available to provide financial help to rural firefighters injured while saving lives or protecting property from fire. Many people support this fund, especially those home owners, farmers and business
owners, grateful for the quick and professional response of the volunteers, and often in dangerous circumstances, Wood said. “These firefighters serve the rural community as members of the Ashburton District Volunteer Rural Fire Force and while saving lives and protecting property, these volunteers often put themselves at risk, and sadly, at times have been injured. Such accidents for these unpaid volunteers can cause hardship,” she said. The fund was established in 2014 with a $10,000 cash injection from the Ashburton District Council from its rural fire account. The fund had already
attracted $12,000 in community donations. At this time Advance Ashburton’s Community Foundation agreed to become its administrator. The foundation receives donations for local charitable purposes, and also offers professional trusteeship for special purpose trusts such as this welfare fund. All donations qualify for a tax rebate of 33.3 per cent to the limit of the donor’s taxable income. For more information on how you can donate, please contact Sandi Wood – Executive Officer, Advance Ashburton on 027 577 5875 or email info@advanceashburton.org.nz

■ NEW ZEALAND YOUNG FARMER EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Two locals win top awards By Colin WillisCroft
Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz
Two of the three winners of this year’s New Zealand Young Farmer excellence awards are from Mid Canterbury, highlighting the talent that exists in the area’s rural communities. Sarah Tait and Sam Robinson, both members of the Methven Young Farmers Club, were announced as winners of the award yesterday, in what NZ Young Farmers chief executive Terry Copeland said was acknowledgement of their outstanding endeavour, leadership and commitment, while also recognising them as future primary industry leaders. Tait, who works as an agronomist for PGG Wrightson, earlier this year initiated the Empty Plate Project to encourage young people into the agri-food sector. She said inspiration for the project came from a study trip to Columbia she made as part of a Prime Minister’s Scholarship. Struck by the hunger she saw in the South American country on her return Tait came up with an idea that she hoped would reinforce agriculture’s role in food production. Along with Young Farmers field officer Biddy Huddleston, she challenged students from nine Mid and South Canterbury high schools to come up with a video, essay or piece of art that promoted the theme. Tait said she has long held an interest in the agri-food sector, having grown up on an arable farm in Mayfield. She has also worked on farms in Western Australia, southern England and Chile, which gave her a taste of farming in contrasting environments and market places. In 2016 she was selected to represent New Zealand at a food security conference in Canberra, a topic that has held her interest ever since. Passionate about Latin America and the role the New Zealand agri-food sector could play there, Tait is currently complet-

Robinson has been recognised for the significant impact he made earlier this year in the mental health and wellbeing landscape for rural youth, after bravely sharing his own struggle with depression in a Facebook post. Since then he’s been contacted by countless young people who had previously been afraid to speak up, he said. Having battled depression

If someone knows there’s someone else out there for them, it can make all the difference.” Robinson said those in rural jobs can find themselves quite isolated, so it was important to have good social networks, such as those provided by young farmers’ clubs. The third excellence award winner was Hamilton’s Zach Mounsey, who, along with holding an equity stake in and being the sharemilker on the family farm, is technical assistant to DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle.
He has also held roles in public trading and finance at Fonterra. Copeland said the three young people were “outstanding” in their fields and showcased the wide variety of talents required in the agri-food sector today. “We are extremely proud of the role our organisation continues to play in developing the primary industry’s next leaders. Sam, Sarah and Zach are examples of the diversity of skills, culture and talent we aim to develop and we are delighted they are recipients of the excellence awards.”

since his late teens, Robinson is now using his experience to help others, while also sharing his knowledge with health bodies. He is also considering setting up a blog for himself and others to share their thoughts as he seeks more transparency and inclusiveness about mental health and wellbeing, which he said will help destigmatise the issue. His message is simple. “Don’t be afraid to show your emotions,” he said. “And there’s nothing wrong with asking your mates how they are. It needs to happen more of-

In brief Hot car warning Police are reminding parents that hot, parked cars and children don’t mix well, following an incident in Tancred Street on Thursday. A twoyear-old child was spotted inside a parked car and reported to Police, but fortunately found to be in shade and with the window down. Police reported that the child was not in distress, but was checked by St John Ambulance staff as a precaution. Police and Ambulance also spoke with the child’s parent, providing advice and support. Police said they would like to thank members of the public who reported the matter and assisted when they arrived on scene. In a statement they said the incident was “a reminder to members of the public, especially given the warm weather, to be mindful of leaving children in the car alone.” They urged people to also think carefully about leaving pets in the car. Anyone with concerns is encouraged to contact Police.

The special relationship that has been forged between the Philippines and the Ashburton District will be at the heart of a television documentary currently in the making. A camera and production crew from GMA Network has been in the district over the past three days on a whirlwind tour, filming Filipino who now call Ashburton home at work, play and in schools. District councillor Thelma Bell has co-ordinated the project and said the trip had been planned to show the best of the district’s scenic attractions as well as focusing on the way the large Filipino
population had made the district their home. The documentary’s front person, journalist Malou Mangahas said the crew was stunned by the district’s scenery. “There is so much flat land and then the mountains and the rivers appear. You have a unique story here,” she said. Mangahas has been involved in documenting the stories of Filipino who have settled in Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia and said the New Zealand story was different, in that many migrants were professionals rather than contract workers. “For the families that come it’s a big decision to do this. They give up a lot,” she said.
Surveys of Filipinos when they arrived in New Zealand and after they had been living here for some time showed that their happiness and satisfaction levels had grown from 68 per cent to more than 80 per cent. “That is because New Zealand is so welcoming and the nice thing about New Zealand is that the financial boundaries are broken down. Everyone works, rich or poor. There is a real sense of equality of opportunity,” she said. Mangahas believes New Zealand had the potential to become the Hollywood for Asia for film makers. Segments of the documentary were also filmed in Hamilton,

Wellington, Rotorua and Matamata but Ashburton was the only area where filming stretched over three days. The documentary will feature a number of members of Ashburton’s Filipino community across workplaces, schools and in homes. It will screen on December 21 and 28 in the Philippines. Over three days they visited the Rakaia Gorge, at Snowden Station, Mt Sunday, filmed a Filipino family on their dairy farm and Filipino working at Terrace View Resthome as well as recording activities with students at St Joseph’s School. Out of its school population of 261, St Joseph’s has 50 Filipino students on its roll.

Lifeguards are considering closing part of Sumner Beach, after two incidents requiring a rescue helicopter within a matter of hours. Two people in their 20s are in hospital after being caught in a rip near Shag Point yesterday. Police and a rescue helicopter were deployed, but the two had already been rescued from the water at around 2pm. The rescue helicopter was alerted 10 minutes later to four people caught in a rip, but the group were again safely ashore by the time the chopper arrived. The two men were reportedly colleagues and were going for a pre-work swim. - NZME
Water stretched Christchurch’s capacity to keep its water reservoirs filled is likely to be stretched this weekend unless people heed advice to conserve water. With temperatures in the city tipped to exceed 30 degrees over the next couple of days the city council is concerned high demand for water could impact on the city’s water supply network. The city council will make a decision on Monday whether to introduce water restrictions. This means people would only be permitted to use hoses, sprinklers and garden irrigation systems every second day. - NZME

Warning: expect sticky, gooey roads KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury drivers can expect sticky, gooey roads with road surfaces likely to reach 50 degrees or more through to Monday, says Ashburton District Council roading manager Brian Fauth High temperatures were likely to cause bleeding seal on some roads, where bitumen melts and begins to appear on top of the chip seal road surface, he said. “When this happens, our contractors apply small chip over the affected areas to try and absorb the bitumen. If you come across a section of road that looks to be melting, please slow down, drive carefully and report it to us. “We’ve already had cases of bleeding seal occurring this week near Methven, which has been addressed, and it’s likely that the hot weather could see this type of thing
continuing next week” Council’s contractors have been carrying out road sealing on Thompsons Track, Line Road, Isleworth Road and Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road this week, and hot temperatures often impacted on this work, Fauth said. “New road surfaces can take longer to settle on very hot days, so it’s important drivers slow down around these works.” The NZ Transport Agency is issuing similar warnings for state highways saying motorists should expect some delays as chip is laid to help absorb bitumen. Water trucks may also be out spraying roads. The agency advises drivers to be patient around roadworks, and to slow down. Driving too slowly through newly-sealed or temperature affected surfaces, however, could see the road surface cling to wheels.

It took oodles of creativity, an abundance of imagination and a term’s worth of work. But yesterday the moment finally arrived for Wakanui School students to let their wearable art creations loose on the runway. Three performances of the Aotearoa: Our Place themed wearable arts show lured captive audiences to the Wakanui hall. Teacher Cherie Livingstone said the school collaborated in groups – each comprising of a model, a dancer and a narrator – to produce the show and its appealing arty garments. “It’s amazing what they’ve produced,” she said. The show told the story of New Zealand, exploring aspects including the Maori myths, flora and fauna, native birds, colonisation and the treaty of Waitangi, and “where to from here?” It was the first time Wakanui School have held a wearable arts show.

■ HUGH STREET ATTACK
Residents fearful after rock attack BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
After someone hurled a rock through her bedroom window on Tuesday night, a Hampstead mother says she no longer wants to live in her home. Alice Culshaw said she and her two children were in bed asleep on Tuesday night, when she awoke shortly after midnight to an “unusual sound” outside her Hugh Street home. “At first I just thought it was the cats – we get a lot around here,” she said, “But then there was this big crash, and someone had thrown a rock through my bedroom window.” When police arrived on the scene 10 minutes later, they dis-
covered that the gutter outside Culshaw’s house had also been kicked in. The rocks appeared to be chunks of concrete removed from the gutter’s remains, and a number were scattered on her front lawn. “It was as if someone had tried a few times and missed,” she said. “It was pretty freaky.” Culshaw said she and her two children have only been in the house for two or three months, and have been left shaken by the incident. The huge hole in her window is fixed, but she still has no idea why anyone would want to throw a rock through her window. “My kids don’t want to be here anymore ... I don’t want to be here anymore,” she said.

Mid Canty’s big blazes Following on from this week’s SealesWinslow blaze, Sue Newman takes a look back at some major blazes from around the district in the past few years.
Canterbury Flour Mil blaze biggest modern-day fire
2014
2011
O
ne of the largest fires in many years in the Ashburton District saw the historic Canterbury Roller Flour Mills on West Street destroyed in February 2011. More than 60 firefighters from around Canterbury fought the blaze with smoke and flames visible for more than 30 kilometres from the fire site. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze in the category two Historic Places Trust building at 6.50am, but it took until mid-afternoon before the fire was under control. By 5pm that day most of the building had collapsed. After battling the fire for about 13 hours, firefighters left the site but were called back early the following morning to dampen down spots that continued to flare up. Parts of the building dated back to 1873. It was a base for several companies, including Canterbury Stockfoods and Precision Animal Supplements. More than 24 hours after the fire had been brought under control, smoke was still rising from the flour mill’s ruins. The building was demolished in July that year. The Canterbury Roller Flour Mill was built in 1873 by miller Alfred Saunders and was one of Ashburton’s oldest remaining buildings. It had a number of owners, but continued as a working mill for 130 years. It was sold to Rivermill Bakeries in 2007 and became the base for a number of small businesses. Today the land on which the mill once stood is vacant.
Feed business burns
U
2012
p to 20 firefighters worked in relays to bring a fire in Evans Feeds in the Ashburton Riverside industrial estate under control in July 2014. This was the second Watson Street fire in two years. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze just after midday by a businessman working a yard a block away and when crews arrived wooden pallets were burning among the smouldering animal feed and rafters in the roof were starting to ignite. The nature of the material inside the building meant it was a fire that was heavy on thick, black smoke rather than flames and that meant firefighters were forced to wear breathing apparatus to reach the seat of the fire. The fire took more than three hours to bring under control and is believed to have been started by a spark from a machine used in the feed-making process.
Lignotech building burns
A
n innovative research and development company lost its base in Ashburton’s Riverside business estate when a late afternoon fire ripped through their Watson Street building on December 22, 2012. An upholstery business next door was also destroyed in the blaze that saw fire crews on site for many hours from early evening. As well as flames and billowing smoke, firefighters had to contend with several explosions from unknown sources within the buildings. The fire cost the Lignotech company irreplaceable research material and specialist research items. An order of material destined for the United States was also destroyed in the blaze. Advanced Upholstery’s next door premises was destroyed along with most of their stock. For its owners the fire was another massive blow to their business dreams as they had relocated to Ashburton from Christchurch after the February 2011 earthquake. Perhaps the only bright spot in the fire’s aftermath was that a neighbouring courier company had managed to retrieve 90 per cent of the items in its warehouse undamaged. The buildings were owned by John Woodham.

farewells long career
W
hen the school bells toll next Friday afternoon, it will be a time of ecstasy for the thousands of Mid Canterbury children done and dusted with another school year. But for Ashburton’s John Harper, it will be a much more sentimental moment. He’ll be marking the culmination of a 45-year teaching career – one that has taken him through Southland and Canterbury in teaching roles, principal and assistant principal roles, and eventually as a local Resource Teacher for Learning and Behaviour (RTLB). Harper is based at Hampstead School, but works throughout nine local schools in total as an RTLB, helping teachers to meet the needs of special needs
children. He’s lived in “sunny, lovely Ashburton” for 12 years and originally hails from Winton, Southland. But it was at his third teaching job, as an associate principal at the Rockdale Park School in Invercargill, that Harper said he truly discovered the rewarding nature of teaching. He recalls a school trip to the rocky shore. Three children had never been on a bus before and others hadn’t ever seen the sea. “We went over the bridge on the way out of Invercargill and there was one kid just looking out the window with these enormously wide eyes … he looked over at me and he said, ‘Mr Harper, we’re flying’!” “It was a decile one school with a lot of impoverished families –
but they were such appreciative kids and I guess the little things just stick in your mind. “It’s amazing the small things you can do to make a difference. It’s lovely to see the joy on their faces.” Over the years, Harper’s passion for teaching has taken him to all shapes and sizes of towns. He’s moved from teaching in schools in Dunedin, to Invercargill, Ohai, Waikaia and Timaru, and said his “wonderful, supportive” wife Julia has tailed along. “My family have really recognised the value of what I do … and I’m very grateful,” he said. In each community he’s settled, Harper said he has always strived to fully involve himself – realising from an early stage that it was important to build relationships
and support the community. From lending a helping hand on local farms to venturing 600ft underground with local miners, and volunteering with the local fire brigade, Harper said “you’ve got to be prepared to walk in their shoes”. During his time he said he’s also become an avid advocate for the value of teachers. Citing a 2015 study, Harper said New Zealand is ranked 19th for resourcing to meet the needs of children with special needs, but 11th in actually meeting them. “I think teachers need more kudos … in no instance have I seen a school doing a disservice to its kids. “I’ve got to take my hat off to the teachers, the schools who make a huge difference, who do
so much good irrespective of political issues – and there have been some terrible decisions made over my time in teaching,” he added. Mid Canterbury teachers in particular have left Harper “without a bad thing to say”. “It’s just been a joy. Teachers in Mid Canterbury without exception really want the best for their students.” Now, Harper’s putting up his feet and celebrating the end of his “great career”. He said he looks forward to a retirement of “pottering around” and “playing it by ear”. “I’ve had 45 years basically without a break, so I guess I’m looking forward to time off,” he said. “But it’s been a ball. I’ve been blessed.”

data to be deleted as a matter of urgency. “The information you received from an MBIE staff member alleges that MBIE is intending to mislead the select committee. This is not correct,” Adrienne Meikle, deputy chief executive, corporate governance and information, said in an emailed response. “As an organisation, we place a high importance on integrity, openness and transparency. We are fully responsible and accountable for our spending, and report on that spending through our annual report and the select committee process.” Meikle said MBIE takes “a consistent approach” to annual reporting and answering select committee questions about contractors and consultants. “We believe we have answered past select committee questions accurately and fully,” she said. “We take information security, and privacy matters seriously and have high expectations of our staff under the code of conduct. We have launched an investigation into how this information came to be disclosed.” MBIE staff who had issues of concern or felt put in a position of ‘whistle-blower’ could use the ministry’s established processes and mechanisms including “an independent, anonymous 24-hour integrity line”. MBIE was criticised by Labour’s economic development spokesman David Clark earlier this year for its spending on external consultants and contractors for what he said was core business. – NZME

The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment has launched an investigation into a privacy breach involving the leak of payments to thousands of consultants, the recruitment firms that supply them and contract details for the past four years. The data was anonymously emailed to BusinessDesk by an MBIE insider who claimed the ministry is about to “lie” about the true extent of its spending on consultants in answer to expenditure questions from a parliamentary select committee. The ministry denied it would mislead the select committee while confirming the data originated from its offices and was an internal document accessible to a very limited number of employees. The data shows MBIE spent $82.9 million on contractors in 2016/17 and another tab on the spreadsheet shows $10.9 million spent on consultants, listed by contract number. Notes to the data show how the lists are reconciled and say that there is “likely to be more spend” with other codings that could be considered as consultants. The total of the consultants and contractor tabs is $94 million while MBIE’s 2017 financial statements put operating expenditure on contractors at $40.6 million and consulting services at $15.6 million – a total of $56 million. The figures in the 2017 annual report “represent MBIE’s fully reconciled and audited accounts as
reported to Parliament,” a spokeswoman said. In addition to the spending on contractors and consultants in the 2016/17 year, “we obtain professional services from external suppliers with expenditure of $48.08 million. This may include contractors where that is the appropriate means of service delivery.” The leaked spreadsheet shows totals for the two tabs for 2015/16 was $77 million compared to the $38.9 million reported operating figures. The 2015 and 2014 totals in the spreadsheet were $72 million and $62 million respectively. The ministry says the leaked data sheet was of raw numbers compiled for different purposes and couldn’t be reconciled with the officially reported figures. The spreadsheet lists 2260 named contractors used by MBIE over the past four years and 1801 consulting firms and individuals listed by contract number. The top two contractors were paid more than $1 million apiece over the four years and 16 more received over $800,000. Most of the suppliers of contractors are recruitment firms, including Manpower Services, Randstad, Beyond Services, Robert Walters and Jackson Stone. The list of consultants includes PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Martin Jenkins, Beca, Tonkin & Taylor, Davis Langdon and Sapere Research Group. In seeking comment from MBIE, BusinessDesk has agreed not to disclose or transmit any personal and commercially sensitive information. The ministry asked for the

An Auckland mother-of-three has been flooded with offers of support after she opened her books to financial scrutiny. Part-time teacher aide Catherine revealed how she is forced to feed her family on less than $89 a week in a bid to bust the myth that those struggling to make ends meet are wasting their money. “I don’t waste any money because there’s no money to waste,” says Catherine. “You have to try and stretch every dollar right down to the cent.” Catherine’s story was viewed online more than 300,000 times, provoking a strong response and thousands of comments from those who saw it. More than 100 people signed up as monthly donors for the KidsCan charity, which provides food, clothing and healthcare to children in need across the country.

When Catherine was presented with the donations at Rowandale School in South Auckland this week, she was overcome with emotion. “I would just like to thank everybody that wanted to reach out and help my little family,” she says. “I’m just glad that the story touched other people because as soon as it got put up [online] I was getting called up.” “It touched some people that didn’t even [realise] that I was living like that.” Catherine says that despite the unexpected windfall she won’t be overspending this Christmas and won’t even be keeping all the money herself. “It won’t be just for me. I’ll be sharing it out to whoever is in need as well.” – NZME

well as more sophisticated fraud incidents. “This shows that retailers need to be more alert to a range of criminal activity, as well as taking steps to protect their employees and customers from the threat of violence.” According to the research, retailers in New Zealand are spending more than $500 million on crime prevention, but the biggest firms are noticing a lower rate of crime if they take good security measures. Mr Harford says nearly a third of retail crimes are not reported, because there is a perception police won’t act or it is time-consuming to do so. “It is heartening that 63 per cent of retailers think police do an OK or great job of managing crime, but an online tool or app would go a long way towards making it simple and easy for retail crime to be reported.” – NZN

Retail crime is becoming more violent, involving organised criminals and costs more than $1 billion a year, according to new research. A study, by Retail NZ and University of Otago, shows that 38 per cent of retailers are seeing more brazen criminals than in previous years. Theft by employees is also growing in significance, accounting for 18 per cent of losses now, compared to 12 per cent at the time of the previous survey in 2003. Greg Harford, Retail NZ’s general manager for public affairs, says retailers believe criminals are more aggressive than in the past. “Retail crime no longer involves just petty theft from stores,” he said. “Retailers are reporting a sizeable number of violent and aggressive incidents every year, as

Meeting a bid to calm i-SITE ire Matt Markham
EDITOR
S
o, the clashing heads are finally going to sit down and bang it out next week, hallelujah. But perhaps, the meeting will spell the end of Ashburton’s own version of a long-winding storyline on a daytime soap opera – our own i-SITE cliff-hanger, right before Christmas – we couldn’t have scripted it any better. Yes, that’s right, after months of going from one side to the other; Mayor Donna Favel, Deputy Neil Brown and Ashburton District Council boss, Andrew Dalziel are going to sit down with Tony Todd and Peter McQuarters next week and attempt to end the stand-off between the two parties. Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that conversation. It won’t lack for punch, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, the basic crux of the entire situation is that there appears to be no hope for the return of the East Street i-SITE, all its usual functions have been relocated to new destinations and are attempting to settle in to and become a normal part of their new residence. But a conversation will be good. Well overdue, but good. At least there is the best possible chance then for everyone to get on the same page and to hopefully start singing from the same hymn sheet. It has been a long and winding road just to get to this point. We’ve seen criticism levelled from all quarters and at times, life has got a little heated for some. But all in all, it has been a good, robust and fruitful debate between local government and the very people who elected them to that position – which is exactly as it should be. One can only imagine that the actual outcome will be that Todd and McQuarters are encouraged to back down from their crusade due to it being too late to make any changes – a frustrating moment for them, I’m sure. But, then again, this is a cliffhanger remember and anything can happen. So, perhaps we might see a complete about-face from the council and Experience Mid Canterbury who will all of a sudden have an epiphany and admit to McQuarters and Todd that they were right all along and that the i-SITE will again open its doors. Just imagine it. The five of them sitting in a room and Mayor Donna says ... “We have decided to change our mind and …” and then fade to black with the message – The saga will resume in January. Oh, the suspense.

As Deputy Mayor Brown stated in his letter to the editor of November 29 on the matter regarding the i-SITE closure, councillors were asked if they wanted to revisit the decision on the Ashburton i-SITE closure, the response was unanimous “No, we do not want to revisit the i-SITE closure”. I have, however, extended an invitation to Tony Todd and Peter McQuarters to meet with me next week. Mayor Donna Favel

Pipe Band Reading today’s The Courier I was appalled to read that the Council Noise Control were called out to warn the Ashburton Scottish Society’s Pipe Band for breaching the desired noise level. This was for making a noise higher than allowed. It says at the bottom of the notice that if they fail to comply they may have their instruments seized or made inoperable. Understand Ashburton how hard certain members have worked to get our band up and running after years not having enough pipers and drummers to restart the band. What a joy when these dedicated men and women first marched out in public. They are a joy to see and hear. Because it was so hot in the rooms the other night, the decision was made to go outside, not in the street outside neighbours but into the college grounds. I wonder if a non member realises just how expensive it is to outfit members of the band. Surely a few allowances could be made.
Pipe Band, I applaud you. Iris Officer-Holmes *

I could not believe what I was reading. Motorhome & Caravan Extravaganza The Lions Club of Ashburton is organising the South Island Motorhome & Caravan Extravaganza at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds during the weekend Feb-
ruary 17, 18, 2018. This event was created by Bev and the late Murray Meadows. 2018 will be its fifteenth year of operation. All profits made are distributed to worthy community groups. The event hosts a number of businesses and traders that specialise in motorhomes and caravans ranging from accessories, services as well as new and good condition mobile homes. Sites are available right up to the end of January – please refer to the contact details below. It is also a wonderful opportunity to buy, sell or trade your own private mobile home for a small fee. Above all, it is also a great social occasion for self-contained motorhomes and caravans to park up for the weekend at a very reasonable cost. For members of the NZMHCA, renewal of self-containment certificates and electrical WOFs are available during the weekend.
How our district council can even consider the proposed policy on sugary drinks in its present form beggars belief! The policy would apply to all council workplaces, events where council provides funding, events on council owned land and at council owned facilities. However, it does not apply to alcoholic beverages! So, if we are taking the kids to the stadium pool for a swim we must assume it is more acceptable for us to supply them with a whisky or gin but not a glass of Fanta. I have difficulty remembering anyone having crashed a car whilst under the influence of a sugary drink at an event on council owned land, but quite a few have come to grief after having a few too many beers or wines. Alcohol is a far greater scourge to society than sugary drinks will ever be, so please would the council stop the hypocrisy, and, if they must interfere with matters that are none of their business, ban sugary and alcoholic drinks. D. David Oakley
Love, it’s the greatest gift of all C
hristmas, a time when Christians celebrate the greatest gift ever, the gift of Jesus Christ, a gift of love and hope to all in need. As we celebrate Christmas with beaches, barbecues, family gatherings and lots to eat let us remember that the greatest gift we can give is that of love. Our time, our presence, our listening, sharing and accepting, our putting the other person before our own interests, love. People need it, we need it, in large dollops. Presents are certainly one way of showing love, but far from the only way and usually not the most effective. Time, our time and interest are nearly always the most appreciated and longest remembered expressions of love.

It’s not always possible but if possible this Christmas show your love by being there for family and friends. Christmas, the time when we celebrate that Jesus came to us to spend time with us, revealing the immensity of His love for us, and to make a way in which we can look forward to spending eternity with Him. Love costs, not necessarily lots of dollars and cents but time, presence, listening and sharing, giving hope. Jesus showed that when He came 2000 years ago and when He comes into our lives today.
This Christmas spend less money and give more love to those nearest and dearest to you and may the hope that Jesus brings permeates your life until the hope of eternity blossoms

The retired doctor, who was born in the US and worked in New Zealand, told authorities how he woke up to find her dead in her own bed, while displaying no hesitation or emotion, the Daily Mail reported. “I just woke up this morning and and I found my fiancée dead in her bed with a knife in her abdomen,” he said on a tape of the call released after his conviction at Brisbane’s Supreme Court. “She was distraught last night, she was trying to sell her apartment, it didn’t sell, she got upset about something and told me to sleep in the other end of the house. “I just woke up this morning and there’s a knife in her abdomen with her hand on it and that’s all I know. “I’m a doctor but she’s deceased. “There’s been no forced entry, it looks like self-induced from what I can tell.” Lang, who was this week jailed for life, calmly spelled his own name, Boyce’s name, and the address of her luxury apartment.
Maureen Boyce could not have killed herself, the post-mortem showed.
Only once he finished telling the story did he sound like he was in shock. “I’m not all right, I don’t know what happened,” he said
as the operator asked if he was OK and not injured. Asked if he needed ambulance for himself he replied: “No I’m OK, I’m survivable
but she’s deceased.” Lang in an earlier call was just as calm but less effective in his delivery before he was either disconnected or hung up to try again with a different operator. A jury took less than two hours to find Lang guilty after an 11-day trial for the grisly murder on October 22, 2015. The 68-year-old former model was found in her Kangaroo Point home with a cooking knife so deeply embedded in her stomach she was impaled to the bed. She was stabbed four or five times with such force that part of the 32cm knife’s handle was driven inside her body. Lang, who was staying in her apartment, claimed he went to sleep about 11pm and found her dead when he woke up in the morning. He said the socialite who was bipolar with a history of depression, became distressed, threw her phone over the balcony and later committed suicide. Lang said the cause of her distress was prospective buyers didn’t make an offer for her $3.7 million luxury penthouse, but the jury didn’t believe him. A post-mortem showed she could not have killed herself and ruled the most probable cause of death was murder.

GPS directing people right into the fire Firefighters trying to contain the raging wildfires in Los Angeles are asking people to refrain from using GPS navigation systems as these are sending them to roads currently on fire. At 100 years old “Marie-Lou” is well known among locals, and her bar has barely changed since she first began working there at just 14 years old. “It’s been like this for 50 years,” Wirth recalled to AFP. Wirth never married or had children and fondly recalls taking over the bar from her father at age 37, during what she believes was the heyday for bars in the area. As for exercise, Wirth can often be found wandering home at 2am after a night out on the town dancing.
Ghosts beat men at sex A woman who says she has sex with ghosts has declared she will “never go back to men” – because spirits leave her more satisfied. Amethyst Realm, a spiritual guidance counsellor from Bristol, claims to have had sexual encounters with 20 different ghostly lovers, and that they give her orgasms. She says she’s now turned her back on men altogether and hopes to find her one true ghoul to settle down with. Amethyst, 27, described how she first felt a presence in the home she had just moved into. While her fiance was away she decided to pursue things further, she said, and dressed in a saucy negligee to entice the ghost, who she says she went on to have sex with.

■ HALBERG AWARDS
Moore in line for Halberg BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
It is shaping up to be a busy month of awards ceremonies for Mid Canterbury’s Glenn Moore after he was nominated for the Buddle Findlay Coach of the Year at the upcoming Halberg Awards. The award comes after Moore was also nominated for the coach of the year award at the New Zealand Rugby Awards. It was a busy and successful year for the former Mid Canterbury player and coach, who won the World Cup with the Black Ferns in what was a dominant overall victory for the side at the tournament. Moore also brought a winning touch to the Mid Canterbury Hammers, winning back-toback Meads Cups in the 2013 and 2014, before jumping ship to coach in Super Rugby for the Blues. Another Mid Canterbury connection in the nominations in netballer Kate Lloyd, who was part of the under-21 team that won the world championships in Botswana earlier this year. The team was nominated for the team of the year award, alongside other teams including the All Whites, Black Sox, Black Ferns and Emirates Team New Zealand. Sheep shearing, stand up paddleboarding and taekwon-do athletes are among the more than 70 nominations that have been received for six categories at what will be the 55th Halberg Awards, with 27 different sports represented in total. The nominations go to the Halberg Awards Voting Academy for
Pogba ban a blow Fernandinho expects Manchester United to feel the absence of Paul Pogba in this weekend’s derby against Manchester City. The influential Pogba, United’s record signing, is out of tomorrow’s clash at Old Trafford through suspension. Stylish win for Gunners Arsene Wenger hailed a “stylish” win as his Arsenal side hammered BATE Borisov to rack up his 700th victory as Gunners boss. Arsenal were already assured of their place in Monday’s round of 32 draw after securing top spot in Group H ahead of an impressive 6-0 win over the Belarusian champions in front of a sparse Emirates crowd. Arsenal, who could draw Borussia Dortmund, Napoli or Celtic in the draw for the knockout stages, were comfortable throughout as less than 30,000 fans watched on – a record low for the Emirates. - PA Mid Canterbury’s Glenn Moore has rapidly climbed the rugby coaching ladder.
judging to be shortlisted into finalists. Sixteen athletes from 12 sports have been put forward for the Sportsman of the Year award. The hotly contested category includes Tom Walsh, Kane Williamson, Beauden Barrett, Brendon Hartley and Michael Venus. The 2016 High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year Lisa Carrington, is nominated again in the female category. Carrington is joined by seven others including Ali Riley, Amy
Satterthwaite, Portia Woodman, Roisin Giles and Sarah Goss. Seven nominations have come in for the Halberg Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award including four time winner Sophie Pascoe. Corey Peters, Holly Robinson, Jessica Hamill, Keegan Pitcher, Stephen Hills and William Stedman round out the list. Nominees for the Disabled Sportsperson, Sportsman, Sportswoman and Team of the Year categories will all be eligible for the supreme Halberg Award – the country’s highest accolade
for sporting excellence. The award is presented to the athlete or team whose achievement is deemed by the judges as representing excellence in sport at the highest level. The 55th Halberg Awards ceremony will be held on February 8. Other awards presented during the ceremony include New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment (public vote category), Sport New Zealand Leadership, Lifetime Achievement and inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame.

England edges All Blacks in three key positions England might need more than a $233 million war chest, if they are to challenge the All Blacks at the 2019 World Cup, according to one English rugby writer. But Eddie Jones’ side does have the edge in three key positions, Nick Cain writes in a regular column for The Rugby Paper. According to Cain, there is growing frustration in the England camp with the fact there was no way of measuring how close the world’s No. 2 side are to the All

Blacks until they play in November next year. Based purely one a man-onman comparison of the two best starting XVs from the past year, the All Blacks would easily come up trumps, Cain writes. “A comparison points categorically to New Zealand being superior in almost every department. “Jones acknowledges the benchmarks set by New Zealand almost every time he talks about them, but it is not until you do a
man-for-man audit that the size of the gains his team has to make over the next two years truly comes into focus.” Three All Blacks stalwarts – Joe Moody, Sam Whitelock and Sonny Bill Williams – would, however, be pipped by their England counterparts, Cain writes. He rates loosehead prop Mako Vunipola ahead of Moody, lock Maro Itoje ahead of Whitelock and second five-eighth Owen Farrell ahead of Williams.
“In the other 12 positions the All Blacks are ahead, and it is a reasonable assumption that if England cannot win more than three individual battles then their chance of supplanting New Zealand as world champions is minimal. “Furthermore, while England followers can argue that it is the sum of their team’s parts that makes them formidable, there are few teams who outstrip New Zealand in terms of collective strength.” - NZME
Breakers spark up The New Zealand Breakers have rediscovered their offensive spark, and the taste of victory. A 96-89 win over the Brisbane Bullets would have been a sweet relief for the Australian National Basketball League front-runners, after what had been a lacklustre week. The manner of the victory would be most pleasing, with the difference coming on the offensive end, with the Breakers notching their second highest total of the season so far. - NZME

Lauriston in prime spot By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
This weekend Lauriston have the perfect opportunity to jump into the driving seat of the Pritchard Shield before the Christmas break. With only two more rounds to go before the big man in the red and white suit breaks up our sporting activities, plenty is on the line. Lauriston currently sit atop the table, tied with Allenton on nine points but leading by the virtue of net run rate, and will get the chance to pick up three more
points against Coldstream this weekend. Allenton have the bye, and while it will give them a game in hand, the pressure that will create could prove decisive come the end of the competition. However, Lauriston picking up the full three points this weekend is by no means a nailed-on result, with Coldstream coming in fresh off the bye, with both Jay and Bo Houston coming in with plenty of cricket for Mid Canterbury in the Hawke Cup under their belts. Keeping Lauriston’s batsmen
in check will be their main challenge, with Scott Morgan currently running red hot, including a century last week against Tech. The usual suspects have also been strong for Lauriston with the ball in hand, with Alex Hooper, Ruben Early and Matt Pawsey all regularly amongst the wickets, while their bowling stocks have been boosted further by the return of Dan O’Brien. In today’s other match, Methven will play host to Tech. Several captains highlighted how they were not too concerned about the results of the T20 com-
petition at the start of the season, and now they look like they might have been on to something. Both Tech and Methven, who were finalists in the T20, have been the strugglers of the Pritchard Shield, with both sides only registering one win. Methven put in yet another poor batting performance last week, only posting 119 runs, and will likely find things just as tricky this week. With only one more round before Christmas, an early present of three points would be greatly appreciated by all teams.
The last time the England cricket team won in Perth, they beat a team of Australian pub-quiz questions. Rick Darling, John Maclean and Alan Hurst were among the victims in a Kerry Packer-denuded side. Thirty-nine years later, the Ashes hosts are more no mercy than no name. With alarming accuracy, and sobering intent, Australia’s bowling attack made a mockery of England’s hopes of chasing down 354 runs to win the second test. Steve Smith took a sleeping pill the night before to ease his nerves, but Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were wide-awake to the challenge on the fifth day in Adelaide. Under a glistening sky, they blew away six English batsmen for 56 runs with bowling of exquisitely measured length. No wonder Smith was so pleased with “Josh, Gazza and Paddy”. England now need to win two of the last three tests and draw the other to retain the urn. “It’s always tough coming back from 2-0 down, especially when you’re away from home,” Smith said. “You can be only one or two bad sessions away from losing the series. I think that can play on people’s minds.” From that, you may conclude a series defeat is hurtling down the track for Joe Root’s team, even if Smith made life harder for his side with his hapless DRS strategy and only 40 and six runs with the bat. Do not try telling him, though, that he lost the sledging to Stuart Broad and James Anderson. “I think the opposite,” Smith said, after England had been wiped for 233. “I think they actually switched me on. I think it was when they stopped talking to me that I might have lost concentration. I actually enjoyed it.” A combined 199,147 spectators watched the Adelaide Oval test. Few will have left this beautiful ground eager to bet on Australia’s bowlers falling apart in Perth. - AAP

Southee’s happy hunting ground BY DAVID LEGGAT It should be no surprise Tim Southee is chuffed not only to be back in the test fold but also in Hamilton, such have been his figures at Seddon Park since his first test at the ground seven years ago. The Hamilton ground has been a source of considerable success for the seamer, who will almost certainly be back in the New Zealand XI for the second West Indies test starting today. Southee missed the first test win in Wellington over the West Indies for the birth of his child, his place going to Matt Henry. However, as industriously as Henry bowled second time around at the Basin Reserve, he is likely to make way for Southee, New Zealand’s most successful active test bowler with 204 wickets in 57 tests at 31.55. Boil that down and in six matches at Seddon Park, Southee has taken 34 wickets at just 19.55 apiece. That included a man of the matchwinning eight wickets in the dramatic win over Pakistan last season, including six for 80 in the first innings which put New Zealand in charge. Pakistan lost nine wickets in the final session of the test to tumble to a 138-run loss. “It’s usually a good cricket wicket,” Southee, who turns 29 on Monday, said yesterday. “It does swing a little bit here but it’s about adapting to the wicket and we’ve done that reasonably well at most grounds around New Zealand in the last few years. “Usually there’s a nice little breeze coming across the ground. Sometimes it’s a humid day and it swings; it can be a blue sky and also swings. “It can be random parts of the day where you have a little glimpse of swing and you have to make the most of it.” New Zealand’s fast bowling stocks are in decent shape. With left armers Neil Wagner and Trent Boult the incumbents, plus Southee and Henry, New Zealand also have Auckland speedster Lockie

Weekend Sports Box A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was. On the couch ….
to Head: Man City @ $1.09
Saturday is the perfect chance to pull the laptop out and hop on Facebook to check out how the Mid Canterbury sevens side will be getting on today at the Southern Regional Sevens Tournament. Games will be played throughout the day, with Mid Canterbury drawing a tough group, so should be well worth checking in to the South Canterbury Rugby Union Facebook page to see how the team gets on.
Quick quiz … Mid Canterbury’s Glenn Moore has been nominated for a Halberg Award for his coaching endeavours this season with the Black Ferns, but in what years did he win the Meads Cup with the Hammers?
Pic of the week …
The punt …. It has been pretty dire in recent weeks, so we are going to do a little rain dance and hope that the Black Caps second test against the West Indies ends up as a draw. New Zealand v W Indies-2nd Test: Draw @ $3.20 $15 bet for a return of $48. Pool: $60.
The gambler ...
Tim Southee Ferguson and Central Districts quick Adam Milne, both of whom have had limited-overs chances but no five-day opportunities yet. “The amount of depth we’ve got is a pleasing sign,” Southee added. The arrival of the baby ruled Southee out of the first test of the summer. There’s only four – two against England at the end of the season – so players want to make the most of them. Southee’s no different. “Ask any player and they’ll still rank test cricket as the pinnacle. “I guess you always want to play more but with the cards we’ve been dealt this year there’s only four. “Hopefully going forward we get to play more test cricket in New Zealand.” For those who look for omens, here’s a bad one for the West Indies, who have lost their captain Jason Holder to a one-test suspension over a slow over rate in Wellington. They have lost their only two tests in Hamilton, by solid margins in 1999 and 2013. Then again there’s a solid expectation, from them and the New Zealand camp that they will, in racing parlance, be better for the run in Wellington, and up for a decent scrap. - NZME

Irish jockey Jack Kennedy found himself in a spot of bother in a race the other day when his horse landed roughly clearing a jump, leaving him clinging on for dear life. Luckily he was able to swing his way back into the saddle, and miraculously go on to win the race.
Quote of the week … “We take confidence from the fact that we have been in the final five years in a row and we are playing in front of our home fans.” Canterbury United Mike De Bono thinks his side can win the national women’s league title again. Quiz Answer: 2013 and 2014.

Parker ‘didn’t hurt me’ Andy Ruiz Jr, the heavyweight whom Joseph Parker beat by decision to claim the vacant WBO world title, believes a fight between the Kiwi and Anthony Joshua could go either way. However, the tough Mexican-American, who suffered his first professional defeat when losing to Parker in Auckland late last year, added Parker never hurt him in their clash. In fact, Ruiz had the better of the early stages of the fight with his hand speed and workrate, but didn’t do enough in the second half and he certainly didn’t hurt Parker either at any stage. Parker is promising to knock out Englishman Joshua should they meet next year – negotiations are continuing – but the 25-year-old has failed to stop his last three opponents, beat-
ing Ruiz, Razvan Cojanu and Hughie Fury on points, and Ruiz said he thought Joshua was stronger. “I think it’ll be a good match up. It could go either way,” Ruiz said. “Joseph didn’t hurt me at all, not even one time. Joseph Parker’s going to have to do something different to win this fight. “But Joshua is pretty good. He stays tall too much. He never had a pressure fighter on him all the time. It would be a good match up.” Ruiz’s trainer, the respected and experienced Abel Sanchez, agreed a fight between Parker and Joshua would be good one, and told BWTM Sports Channel he believed Joshua could get the decision. - NZME

Matamata off after race one Safety issues brought a premature end to yesterday’s Matamata meeting. Two horses came to grief in the opening event and a subsequent track inspection by stewards with
M10
trainers and jockeys’ representatives resulted in a decision to abandon the fixture. Sam Weatherley’s mount Duke Street came down with 800m to run in the 2000m maiden and
Tensile, ridden by Mark Hills, was unable to avoid them and also fell. Both jockeys and their mounts escaped without injury. Stewards said they could find no reason for the slippery track.
The meeting will not be rescheduled as the majority of horses who didn’t race at Matamata have options at Hawke’s Bay, Tauranga and Ellerslie over the next nine days. - NZME

In brief
■ IRONMAN
Target: top of podium Fear or trepidation are not words you associate with leading triathlete Braden Currie, he races like his life depends on it every time he pulls on the lycra. Little surprise then that the 31-year-old welcomes the pressure of being race favourite as he sets out to defend his IRONMAN 70.3 title. “In my mind it is good to be race favourite, it is good to have a target,” said Currie ahead of today’s race. “Being defending champion is not so much a factor, but a home race is really important to me. “I pushed hard at the Asia Pacific Champs last week but probably didnt give it that 10 per cent extra that I have at home. Taupo is one of my favourite places, and the course gives me plenty of motivation and inspiration.” Currie has in fact won this race two years running, so understands what is required to race well at this time of the year, but this year saw him race at the IRONMAN World Championships for the first time, leaving him understandably a little leg weary, but no less determined today. “I definitely feel like I am at the end of my season and am a little tired, but I am really excited to race this weekend and wont hold anything back. “This feels like my last race this year and that is a really good headspace to be in, I will definitely race as hard as I can and go for the win and what will be will be. “It has been a very long season,
Braden Currie will be favourite to defend his IRONMAN 7.3 title.
I put a lot into IRONMAN World Champs this year, from qualifying at IRONMAN New Zealand and then going to the Asia Pacific Champs in Cairns to get enough points, and then I had some very big training blocks on the road to Kona.
“I havent really stopped since then with XTERRA Worlds and 70.3 Asia Pacific Champs a week ago.” Currie knows the competition is waiting for any signs of weakness, with a strong field of New Zealanders and internationals
on the start line in Taupo today, identifying two to be wary of. “These days we have to be tactical in how we race. “I am pretty sure Mike (Phillips) is racing, he gave me such a challenge last year and surged towards the end of the race. “Dylan (McNeice) is back and we know he is an incredible swimmer and will open up the race early on, it will be interesting to see who will go with Dylan or if he ends up by himself.” McNeice however is playing down the prospect of a sizeable lead out of the water, the 32-yearold is looking for a big summer in New Zealand after hip surgery this time last year hindered his European summer. Currie has a similar philosophy, with the prospect of multiple contenders coming together on the run to spice things up for those watching the race. “Taupo is very beautiful course, I am excited to see it is a threelap run course which will be a lot of fun for us and for the spectators to see us each lap. “The swim is open and can be choppy and change the race dynamics, but you do your best to stay in the front bunch and be ready to strike at the end.” Aussie based Kiwi Callum Millward has made the call to race after an abbreviated day at IRONMAN Western Australia last weekend. The swim was cancelled due to a shark sighting, but Millward’s day was even shorter, thanks to a crash on the bike that left him bruised, but ready to go again this weekend in Taupo. - NZME
■ OPINION
It’s the punters on the losing end - again G
ambling. It’s a huge part of human history; and rightly or wrongly we’ve always done it. The ancient Greeks may well have started it all; rolling two sixes was called the Throw of Aphrodite and would win you any game, while those who indulge in the odd game of poker might not know that the Minoans were doing exactly the same thing – only 3500 years ago. Nowadays there’s some who would bet on two flies climbing up the wall. But apart from those at that extreme end of things, times have changed, a great deal. The TAB has been a New Zealand institution since around 1950, when the government decided gambling should be regulated for the good of the masses (read taxed). Things went along swimmingly for decades, in 1987, 85 per cent of the gambling dollar went through the venerable halls of the TAB. But already the signs were there; the Golden Kiwi had
shown the way, New Zealanders already wanted to find different ways to subtract varying amounts from their hard-earned wages. In 1987 Lotto arrived as a huge new player, then a year later the eventual mass proliferation of pokie machines began. By the year 2000, the TAB’s share of the national gambling pool had reduced to 18 per cent. And that’s where this story is leading – what used to routinely be a buzzing hive of activity has been drastically condensed into smaller and smaller premises through the country, including our own TAB. Punters of a certain vintage will remember the long hallway (designed to further deter ladies from straying into territory that wasn’t theirs) at the Dobson Street end of East Street, where serious men in ties took your bets and wrote them down on little yellow bits of paper. The scope for bad things to happen somewhere in the process must have been immense. Eventually they moved to the
Steve Devereux MY SHOUT
other end of the town, beside the Farmers’ Corner, in bright new premises, and by then the staffing practices had changed; you were far more likely to be served by a smartly dressed, friendly and helpful young lady behind the counter. And the computer age had arrived. George Julius, the man who first invented the totalisator machine, must have had an interesting upbringing to inspire him to invent such a thing – he was the son of an Anglican bishop. Way back then, I’m pretty sure Anglican bishops weren’t habitually spotted in the local betting shops. The next move was to Burnett Street and an alignment with the Ashburton Club and MSA, and then another shift around the
corner to the current spot. Except, that’s where the trail ends. With every new premises there were fewer and fewer customers, with the aforementioned increased competition and a new adversary – this time from within. Phone and computer betting has become the norm, and the days of pushing your way into the TAB, seeing a jovial crowd of familiar faces you don’t run into anywhere else (especially if it’s harness on the grass) are simply gone. Somehow in Australia the betting shops are still massively busy places (although the behind-the-counter service pales beside what you get from the lovely ladies in our own TAB); maybe the TAB has missed a trick somewhere along the way. Whatever the causes, from this weekend the betting services in this town are now reduced to pub-counter machines, and that’s definitely the end of a long era for the long-suffering punters, whom I thought were the most important pieces of the puzzle.
Kiwi a UFC champion Robert Whittaker has been crowned UFC middleweight champion after Canadian star Georges St-Pierre vacated the title. The New Zealand-born Whittaker, who has lived in Australia for most of his life, has also been guaranteed a first defence on home soil – against American fighter Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Perth next February. - NZME
Haas making an impact At 194cm and 120kg by the age of 17, big things were always expected from emerging Brisbane forward Payne Haas. But Broncos enforcer Korbin Sims admits he was still surprised by Haas’ progress at pre-season training, predicting a breakout 2018 NRL season for the teenager who has already earned Andrew Fifita comparisons. Sims said he had been blown away by the giant teenager’s barnstorming pre-season training start. - AAP
Headache for Maroons Queensland chairman of selectors Gene Miles admits the Maroons face a massive headache to fill the gaping holes left by Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk. But Miles reckons he wouldn’t have it any other way. Michael Morgan is expected to get first crack at halfback with Cameron Munster tipped for five-eighth after his strong game three debut in Queensland’s 2-1 series win in 2017. - AAP
Changes for sevens All Blacks Sevens coach Clark Laidlaw has made a couple of changes in naming his 12-strong squad for the South African leg of the rugby sevens world series this weekend. The New Zealanders made an encouraging start to the 10-leg circuit last week in Dubai, going further than in any tournament last season in reaching the final where they were beaten 24-12 by South Africa. Teddy Stanaway and Kurt Baker have replaced Tone Ng Shiu and Isaac Te Tamaki in Cape Town, where the Kiwis begin their campaign with pool matches against the United States, Spain and Australia. - NZME
China eyes Auld Mug The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Commodore Steve Mair says China’s yacht racing team, China Team, have huge ambitions to compete in the next America’s Cup. First formed in 2005, China Team made their international debut in 2007 when they raced in the Louis Vuitton Cup, the challenger series prior to the 34th America’s Cup. “They’re super enthusiastic ... It would be a huge ambition for them for this coming America’s Cup,” Mair said. - NZME
Ronaldo the best again Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award as soccer’s best player of the year for a record-equaling fifth time, moving him level with Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Ronaldo won the trophy at a ceremony held at the Eiffel Tower yesterday. He finished ahead of Messi and Neymar, who left Barcelona in the offseason to join Paris S-G for a world record transfer fee of 222 million Euros. - PA

The cupboards were empty, the bills piling up and they were close to losing their home due to rent arrears. When the family received an eviction notice they knew they needed help, so they turned to their local Salvation Army. Together, the family worked on a plan to address their most serious issues, beginning with their living situation and then through financial and family mentoring programmes and food parcels.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The first rule of professionalism is not to ask others to do your work. The second rule is to adhere to the training manual. If you weren’t trained, a true professional finds a way to get trained nonetheless. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You agreed. You checked the box. That box included limitations that you will definitely outgrow and push against in time – as well as limitations that you are better off respecting. Know the difference. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): As you mix into the crowd, you’ll be with all types of people, most melding with your goodwill and positive intention; some, not so much. All rudeness is essentially weakness or ignorance. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’re not looking to blame anyone, though neither would you mind if someone else would step in and take responsibility for what’s going on. It could actually happen... miracle of miracles! LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Avoid matters of religion and politics in polite company. Extend the taboo-topics to finance, health, fashion, taste preferences in general and anything that highlights differences of opinion, ideology or belief. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’ve trepidation about tackling the events of the day, but that won’t stop you. The upside of being afraid is an adrenaline rush – just what you need to take courage in the face of fear. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ll use the past to reference where you are. That’s the proper use of it, after all. To use it as a refuge would make you smaller. To use it as your glory would deny the excitement that is to come. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Some say it isn’t right to change the goal. Some say it signals weakness or failure. But not all goals are worthy. A worthy goal is the water that raises all ships. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your success today will depend on your ability to compartmentalise and manage your emotions, including the very subtle, almost non-emotion of boredom. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): It’s not that everyone wants or needs to be included in the shenanigans; they just want to feel invited. Handle the invites in a highly inclusive manner and you’ll be a social success. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): There’s something new on the horizon that will not fully rise if not for your input. You can’t imagine how important you are to this right now, but hopefully you won’t doubt it, either. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Shakespeare suggested, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.” Three hours (without a cellphone!) must have been excruciating. But, he has a point. You’ll earn many points for a timely arrival.
