ASHBURTON CRIME SPREE
Police on the back foot BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
An explosion in the number of burglaries around Ashburton is leaving police stretched with no extra resources to help. Dozens of thefts, break-ins and burglaries have been reported throughout the district in the past week. The Guardian knows of 15 car break-ins, six house burglaries, four stolen vehicles, two business burglaries and dozens of sightings of suspicious individuals on properties
in the past eight days alone. Ashburton Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield yesterday confirmed police had seen a “spike in reported burglaries” and were working to co-ordinate and investigate them. Though Ashburton police had identified a number of suspects and were now in the process of gathering evidence to further the enquiry, he said no extra resources are being put into tackling the burglaries, for the simple reason that “we sadly don’t have any extra resources.”
“The existing team will simply have more work,” he said. Ashburton District Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator Christine Richards said it was evident that police are “having to play catch up” due to under-staffing, and had been run ragged by the recent activity.

■ SIGNATURE EVENT
Shining the spotlight on Ashburton District BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A new signature event is about to be launched for the Ashburton District, one that will showcase the best the district has to offer. Showcase Mid Canterbury is the brainchild of Bob McDonald and Sue Cooper and will be launched in September. The event is still in the development stages but it will run on the Sunday before Boulevard Day. That day was chosen, McDonald said, to create another option for visitors to the district and to encourage people to turn their Boulevard Day visit into a twoday affair. In its most basic form, the concept is a simple one, McDonald said – putting people on a bus and taking them to some of the district’s special places. “But Showcase will be a whole lot more. It’ll be classy. It’s an event that we want to get the whole district involved in. It’s very much community based,” he said. The day-long tour will see guests ferried by bus with a commentator on board. It will start with coffee, include brunch and afternoon tea and wrap up with drinks. The points visited in between are still being firmed up but there is no shortage of great ideas coming from the community, McDonald said. “We plan to incorporate a visit to a school for brunch. It has to
be about the people and the attractions, not about just sitting in a bus. We envisage you’ll be sitting for a maximum of 20 minutes between stops.” Rural life will be highlighted but so too will the attractions that make the district unique, he said. “The farms we visit will be top end farms, we want this to be a showcase.” McDonald and Cooper plan a low key start for year one, saying if they can fill two buses they’ll be happy, but looking ahead there is no real limit to the number that could be accommodated. They anticipate tickets are likely to cost $175, but that will be a full day tour that includes food and refreshments. “This will be high end, it won’t be about sausages and bread.” Once the itinerary is firmed up, a website will be developed and promotion will start in earnest. “So many parts of New Zealand have their own signature event; Mid Canterbury needs its own. We believe we’ve got one of the most beautiful districts in the country and we want to share it. “People don’t realise what’s on their doorstep,” Cooper said. Two sponsors have already signalled they’re keen to be part of the tour but more will be needed. The organisers are keen to hear from both potential sponsors and from the community with ideas for places and activities that could be showcased.

■ ASHBURTON ROTARY CLUB
From Ashburton to Fiji with love BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Decommissioned hospital ward furniture that has been stored at Ashburton Hospital for years, will shortly be on its way to some of Fiji’s more remote islands thanks to the efforts of Ashburton Rotary Club members. Yesterday a team of Rotarians became furniture movers for the day as beds, mattresses, bedside cabinets and bed tables were moved out of storage and into a container to begin the first leg of their sea journey. Project convenor John Rickard said his organisation had a long history of working on projects in the Pacific Islands and when the need was signalled, a call went out to the Canterbury
District Health Board for unwanted equipment they wanted to rehome. “There are a lot of hospitals out in the islands where there is very little equipment and patients have to lie on the floor. The hospital had equipment that had been replaced and it was a shame to see it going to waste when someone else could use it,” Rickard said. For Ashburton Hospital the project was one that was a win all round said finance and business manager, Ashburton and Rural, Krunal Shukla. “It’s a clean-out in the best possible way. We’re shipping equipment we’ve made sure is still fit for purpose and that can be reused in a way that’s going to benefit others in a place it’s
needed,” he said. There were about 20 beds available from both Ashburton and other rural hospitals that over the past 10 years had been replaced with modern beds complete with automated lifts, Shukla said. The manual beds had been stored in an unused area of the hospital laundry and once they were moved out it would be good to have additional storage space freed up, he said. “The DHB sees this project as helping others in the health care industry. These beds are going where they’r needed and I’m sure they’ll cherish them.” The 20 foot container will have a free ride to the Port of Lyttelton thanks to Wilson’s Bulk Transport.

Lack of police ‘no surprise’ BY COLIN WILLISCROFT
COLIN.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Concern over Ashburton police numbers comes as no surprise to Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. “With the government now refusing to confirm Ashburton will get additional police, it’s not surprising that people would be questioning whether the resource that’s here is adequate,” Falloon says. The recent spike in crime around Ashburton was a huge concern, he said, and it was disappointing that despite Labour’s policy before the election was to increase police numbers by 1800 “now they’ve gone quiet on how they’ll achieve it”. “Before the election Police Minister Stuart Nash travelled the length of the country, including
Ashburton, to complain about police numbers. “But now, just a few months after taking office, the Police Minister has confirmed that there’s no guarantee Mid Canterbury will see any new police officers at all. “In recent weeks he’s been telling other regions that they’ll see police numbers increase to the levels that he demands, but he won’t give Mid Canterbury the same commitment. “Why will he happily confirm that Napier will see an increase in police, but won’t do the same for us?” In December Falloon lodged written questions in Parliament asking Nash whether the Ashburton and Methven police stations would receive additional staff as a
result of the proposed increase in police numbers. Nash responded by saying that under the Policing Act of 2008 decisions around the deployment of police officers are the responsibility of the Commissioner of Police. Falloon said he will continue to advocate for Mid Canterbury’s fair share of police. “I will absolutely be pushing the Police Minister for more commitment,” he said. “They’ve come up with a pretty ambitious target of 1800 and I would hope to see many of those in Mid Canterbury. “I’ll continue to hold the Minister to account for the promises he made during the election campaign.” See editorial, P26
Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is vowing to continue to fight for extra police for the Ashburton District.
Police on the back foot From P1 She urged people not to forget the measures they can take themselves. “Something that I do find myself tearing my hair about is the apathetic attitude that some people are showing at the moment. People are still leaving their cars unlocked, their cameras and wallets in sight,” she said. “We’ve really got to be patient and vigilant.” However, members of Facebook neighbourhood support group Ashburton and Methven Beware said they were also seeking a “sense of something being done, so we can feel safe again in our own homes”. While they conceded that items left visible in cars only added “fuel to the fire”, they said they would particularly like to see more police patrols. But as Ashburton Police continue following up recent offences, the number of staff on deck – and the number available for patrols – is not likely to increase anytime soon. Earlier this year, Banfield told the Guardian that Mid Canterbury had already reached its capped “approval police numbers” and comes down the priority list when it comes to new cops.
“There is a real opportunity in this town to make a difference if well resourced … but the only staff this district will be getting is to replace approved positions,” he said. Despite this, Richards from Neighbourhood Support said it was very important to keep reporting any crimes or activity. “If you see a person behaving suspiciously, call police. And if it’s a car that you’re suspicious about, call police because they can look up the rego and find out if it’s stolen or wanted.” Neighbourhood Support and Police also recommend locking doors and windows with quality locks, even while in the back garden, resting or doing something with a lot of concentration. They also recommend installing sensor lights, identifying and keeping records of valuables, and taking steps to ensure your home looks “lived in” if heading away. From what Richards had observed she felt more than one group were responsible for the current criminal activity, though she said the reasons behind it could vary. “It could simply be boredom, or it could be people needing to nick something to sell for money for something else.”

Council baulks at cost of building safer community By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It could cost the Ashburton District Council just $34,000 to be part of a nationwide project designed to enhance community safety. Last year the council agreed that Safer Ashburton should gain accreditation with the Safer Communities Foundation which helps councils bring about significant changes in community safety. But when the cost of this was spelled out yesterday to district councillors, it was not an easy sell for Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford. The work needed to gain accreditation could not be achieved within existing resources, Clifford told councillors during his report on the organisation’s work over the past six months. “Council funding provides the basics but we cannot provide the staff to co-ordinate this within our current resources,” he said. There was a natural fit between the Safer Communities model and the council’s commitment to developing a safe communtiy
Kevin Clifford that promoted social, environmental and physical well-being but that came with some costs, Clifford said. For every dollar the council grants Safer Ashburton it secures another $4 in funding from other organisations for projects it runs and that makes it the most suc-
cessful organisation of its kind in New Zealand, he said. Of the $900,000 Safer Ashburton received in revenue, the council provided only 22 per cent of this. As a comparison, Clifford said, Porirua’s revenue is $228,000 with the council providing 62 per cent while Kapiti
earned $376,000 with the council providing 90 per cent of the money. He and board chairman Don McLeod asked the council to provide it with another $34,000 to employ a part time co-ordinator for the accreditation project. This is likely to run for five years, but after year one some of the costs could be covered by ACC. The recent council run Our Place survey that prioritised community issues and concerns, put community safety near the top of the list. “This accreditation fits with the direction we’d like you to help us to go, but getting accreditation is only part of the process. If somebody doesn’t drive this it will become amorphous and just drift away,” McLeod said. If the council did not fund the position the board would have to go back to the drawing board. Trying to do the work with existing staff would mean accreditation would be a protracted process and any community safety impetus would effectively be lost, he said.
■ ASHBURTON MUSEUM
Giving our district a welcoming face By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
If you have a few spare hours in your week, the Ashburton Museum needs you. While it has a small team of paid staff, the museum’s frontline staff are mostly volunteers, but in many ways they’re the most important people in the business, says museum director Tanya Robinson. “Our aim is to be the most welcoming front desk in Ashburton and we’re looking for another two or three people to add to
our team,” she said. Volunteers on the current roster range from retired locals with a wealth of knowledge about the Ashburton District through to newcomers who want to meet people and to learn something about their new home and mothers with a few hours to spare while children are at school. And it’s a job that can have surprising benefits for some, Robinson said. “We have people on our staff who want to be able to demonstrate they’ve learned public re-
lations skills working as part of a professional team and we’ve seen quite a few who go on from here to full time paid work.” Volunteers man the museum’s front desk in two shifts, from 10am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm and can choose the shifts they work. “Most of the job is welcoming visitors, talking to them about the museum generally and about exhibitions and often volunteers will also do some data entry work around collections. “We also get a lot of research
inquiries and sometimes they’ll direct these to other staff but sometimes they can do some of this themselves,” Robinson said. The museum currently has 35 volunteers on its books. “The youngest is an intern of 18 and the oldest are well retired and they’re not saying how old they are.” Anyone interested in volunteering will find application forms on the Ashburton District Council’s website or at the museum’s front desk.
In brief Boil water notice Montalto residents were told last Thursday they needed to boil their drinking water and that requirement is still in place. The notice was issued after E coli was found in the water supply and daily tests have been carried out since then. The supply must return clear results for E.coli for three days in a row before the notice can be lifted and results show it is not yet safe for the notice to be removed. Drinking water, and water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes should be boiled for at least three minutes before consumption. The boil water notice will remain in place until further advised by council.
Cop felled by bottle A Dunedin policeman has been left bleeding and sore after being hit by a bottle thrown by an alleged bottle store robber. A witness said Sergeant Nathan White was chasing the alleged offender about 3.30pm, when the man threw a bottle at the officer’s head. Another witness said another officer apprehended the person soon after, near the corner of Bond St and Water St. “He went down pretty hard.” White was left bleeding and in pain, and was supported by fellow officers until an ambulance arrived. - NZME
‘Item of interest’ found Police investigating the killing of a Dunedin teenager say they found an ‘’item of interest’’ during a search at Blackhead this week. Sixteen-year-old Amber-Rose Rush was found dead at a Corstorphine house on February 3. A 30-year-old medical professional has been charged with her murder. Police yesterday said that the search at Blackhead quarry on Tuesday turned up ‘’an item of interest’’. Earlier this week, it was understood police were searching for the teen’s cellphone which was believed to have been dumped there after her death, Fairfax reported. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Hanna said police still wanted to identify the occupants of a dark coloured vehicle, believed to be a Toyota Camry or similar, which was parked in the carpark at Blackhead Quarry. - NZME

Multi Cultural Bite crowd the biggest yet BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The crowds that descended on Multi Cultural Bite this Waitangi Day were officially the biggest and hungriest yet. Despite gloomy skies and three last minute stall cancellations, organizers of Multi Cultural Bite are celebrating record ticket sales from this year’s event. More than 13,000 bites of food were consumed – including 500 servings of meatballs, hundreds of chicken spring rolls and dozens of coconut cakes. Event coordinator Louise Duke said the event was “way busier and bustling than the previous.” “It just gets better every year … [we’re] excited for next year’s 10th anniversary.” She said the event could not have gone ahead without the amazing team and support from the town. “Our volunteers worked amazingly in the run up to the event and during.” Right – Among the record-setting crowd at Multi Cultural Bite 2018 were (from left): Yuka Aiba, Narumi Miura and Chiko Nunoko PHOTO ROBYN HOOD 060218-RH-070
Event centre, 10 years of success BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
It might have taken almost 10 years, but finally the community is embracing the Ashburton Trust Event Centre as its own. For most of its life the centre’s auditorium counted its users mainly in touring shows and out of town events, but over the past 12 months community bookings made up 70 per cent of all bookings in the centre’s auditorium, manager Roger Farr said. That local support was great, but it also created a booking balancing act, he said. “The days booked by community groups restricts the number of days available to itinerant hires and that’s resulted in the
loss of a small number of touring events.” When it came to touring shows, comedy seemed to be a winner, Farr said, with the 7 Days show booked out in just 21 minutes. This show was the first where the centre had secured a sponsor to cover the cost of a show that it would otherwise have been unaffordable, he said. Bookings for the Bradford Room were increasing and the Woodham Foyer continued to be popular, but the conference market continued to be slow, Farr said. With almost 10 years of business behind it, the centre is now looking to how it would grow its
business in the future. “We’re looking primarily at the education sector and how we can assist schools. Their biggest problem is a lack of funding to utilise the event centre but we’re keen to bring in orchestras or Court Theatre and the schools could come to us and be involved in the performing arts side of the curriculum,” he said. Farr also wants to utilise the centre’s technical equipment and skilled staff for events at other venues. “This is a lucrative sideline we could grow and add to our revenue.” He is keen to add a trainee technician to his technical team.
Many keen to give tap dancing a go BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Tap dancing has officially seen a resurgence in Ashburton following a successful workshop last week. TInwald Dance Teacher Donna Keenan and daughter Yolanda Grobler held a tap dance workshop at the Tinwald Hall on Saturday morning, offering three classes to dancers of different levels. The classes lured those wanting to test the waters, to experienced previous members of Ashburton’s Tap Dancing Association, and Keenan said the feedback was positive. “We had a great day … they really enjoyed the classes and once word got around more would like to attend,” she said. Keenan and Grobler have now established Happy Feet Dancing Academy which will operate classes on the first Saturday of every
month. Beginners, intermediate and advanced classes will be held, and if the interest continues to grow, Keenan said they may look at doing fortnightly lessons. Keenan herself has danced since the age of five, performing successfully in competitions and with dance academies in the United States and Australia, and Grobler has also enjoyed many years of tap dancing. Keenan, a qualified dance teacher, said she is passionate about dance and would love to see tap rejuvenated in Ashburton. While it’s big in Christchurch and it’s big in Timaru, Keenan said the dance style had lost its way somewhat in Ashburton over the years. The next classes will be held on March 3 and more information is available on the Happy Feet Dance Academy Facebook page.

Judge slams ‘modern-day slavery’ at restaurant
Erica Godfrey suffered a bruise to the left of her face when she stood up for her son Isaiah, 14, at a Canterbury skate park.
■ CHRISTCHURCH
Teen boy punches mum protecting son By Sophie CorniSh A South New Brighton woman suffered a badly bruised face after trying to defend her autistic son against a teenage bully. Erica Godfrey was punched at the seaside suburb’s Thomson Skate Park after confronting a teenager who had pushed and threatened her son. Her son, Isaiah, 14, told her he had been threatened when she picked him up to go home. Isaiah has autism, ADHD and a laryngeal papillomatosis tumour in his throat. Godfrey then confronted the teenager, who was still at the skate park. “I started trying to explain to
the boy that my son was trying to make friends with him but because he has a throat tumour he can’t talk clearly and with his autism he doesn’t communicate very well,” she said. But the teenager told her he had anger problems and then punched her hard in the face. Godfrey told him she was calling the police, to which he said: “So what, there’s no cameras, you can’t ID me, get over it.” Coincidentally, police were at the park dealing with another matter and Godfrey reported the teen, who fled. However, he returned after and, after a chase, the teenager was caught in New Brighton. A 14-year-old boy has been re-
ferred to Youth Aid. Godfrey now wants the city council to look at putting security cameras in the park. “Thomson Park is the problem spot. It needs to be opened up more, some of the trees pulled back a bit and some lighting and cameras,” she said. Since posting on Facebook about the attack, Godfrey received more than 50 messages of support, including from several people saying they had had experienced similar bullying and intimidation at the park. “Thomson Park is our local, we shouldn’t have to feel intimidated to go there. A lot of people won’t even go there because they feel intimidated,” she said. - Star.kiwi
WASTE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR BUSINESS
An Auckland restaurateur has been sentenced to 26 months’ jail and ordered to pay $7200, and her husband to eight months’ home detention and pay the same amount in reparation over immigration and exploitation charges. The charges of exploitation and providing false or misleading information related to five Filipino employees they sponsored to come to New Zealand. Virgil and Luisito Balajadia, who had both Filipino and New Zealand citizenship, and their restaurant, 3 Kings Food, were each earlier found guilty at the Auckland District Court of two charges of exploitation under the Immigration Act 2009. Sentencing the pair, the judge said the conditions of the victims was not far removed from a modern-day form of slavery. Virgil Balajadia, also known as Gie, was convicted of five charges of providing false and misleading information, two of them jointly with her husband, to Immigration New Zealand (INZ). The information included misleading individual employment agreements which were used in visa applications. Virgil Balajadia was sentenced at the Auckland District Court yesterday. “You betrayed the trust of the victims who were strangers to this country and believed that you had their best interests at heart,” the judge said on sentencing the pair. INZ Assistant General Manager Peter Devoy said the case came to light after the victim named in the exploitation charges reported his plight to the Philippines Consulate. The employee worked for the pair from April 2014 to July 2015, and claimed to have consistently worked at least 10 hours per day, six days a week, without any breaks. He was paid for at most 40 hours per week, and did not

receive any payment for the final three and a half months he worked at the restaurant in Birkenhead. The victim also had to pay the pair $150 per week to live in a makeshift room in their garage. “This employee was living at the defendants’ house and was taken to the restaurant by the owners every morning and then back to their house at night. He was told he would be reported to the police and sent home if he did not perform well in his job,” Devoy said. “He could only leave the house for short periods of time and cleaned the defendants’ house on Mondays when the restaurant was closed.” Labour Inspectorate calculations estimated the victim had been underpaid by approximately $15,000 in wages, plus $2000 less than the minimum wage and was owed $5000 in holiday pay. INZ approved visas for five victims – all chefs from the Philippines – after receiving offers of employment, letters of support and job descriptions for them to work at the restaurant. Although contracted to work for a minimum of 30 hours per week at an hourly rate of $16, they were all either not paid at all or paid for far fewer hours than they worked. Only one is still in New Zealand on a valid visa to work for another employer. The others had left New Zealand. Devoy said the prosecution sends a strong message that migrant exploitation will not be tolerated. “The overriding principle is that migrant workers have the same employment rights as all other workers in New Zealand,” Devoy said. “We will not tolerate employers who exploit migrant labour for their own commercial advantage and will not hesitate to prosecute in cases where warranted.” - NZME

Venables back behind bars The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger has accused the criminal justice system of “collusion and cover-up” after it emerged one of her son’s killers was not prosecuted for breaching a ban on accessing the internet. Jon Venables might still have been behind bars had the Crown Prosecution Service decided to prosecute him two years ago for breaching the terms of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) preventing him going online. Instead he was arrested in July last year on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, including a paedophile manual downloaded from the internet on how to “have sex with little girls ... safely.” Venables, now 36, was yesterday sentenced at the Old Bailey to a further three years and four months (40 months) in prison after pleading guilty to downloading explicitly indecent images. It emerged in court that in June 2015 the CPS had decided not to prosecute Venables for breaching his SOPO. It is further understood the Probation Service did not regard the offence as serious enough to warrant an immediate return to prison. Instead he was simply cautioned, and remained on li-

James Bulger’s mother Denise Fergus has called for a public inquiry into Jon Venables’ case. cence for an earlier offence of being in possession of dozens of hard-core indecent images of children and posing in an online chat room as a woman offering up her eight-year-old daughter for sexual abuse. Two-year-old son James was tortured and murdered by the then 10-year-old Venables and Robert Thompson, also 10, after they abducted him from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, on Febru-
ary 12, 1993. The two killers were sentenced to detention at her Majesty’s pleasure and released on licence in 2001, at the age of 18. James’ mother Denise Fergus said yesterday: “We heard in court Venables breached his parole terms in 2015 by gaining access to the internet. “However, we also heard this was covered up in that authorities dealt with him by
way of a police caution rather than him being brought back to court for a breach of his parole.” Speaking through Chris Johnson, of the Justice for James Campaign, Ms Fergus called for a public inquiry into the case, describing the earlier decision not to prosecute as “fundamentally wrong and part of a pattern of collusion between the authorities and Venables”. - NZME

SpaceX rocket overshoots Mars orbit Elon Musk’s super-rocket has taken flight and overshot Mars’ orbit, going further out into the solar system than originally planned. His cherry-red Tesla, carrying a dummy and blasting Bowie’s Life on Mars, was supposed to take a path around the Sun which would take it out into Mars’ orbit. It appears the super-strong rocket, with twice the firing power of any before it, over-
shot that trajectory and is has now pushed the Tesla into an orbit which extends into the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The inventor’s rockets are twice as strong as the Saturn V rockets, which carried men to the moon during the Apollo era. Video footage from the Tesla showed it cruising into space for six hours, giving views of the Earth from the perspec-
tive of Elon Musk’s old car. The rocket was supposed to have one final engine burn before launching the car out into its final orbit, but it appears the engine was a little too strong. The force of the rocket has shocked and impressed planetary scientists. The successful launch of Falcon Heavy astounded half a million viewers, and delighted Musk, who had previ-
ously told reporters he gave the endeavour a 50:50 chance of success. He said before the launch that he would consider it a success if the rocket exploded without damaging its launch pad. However, viewers saw the rocket seamlessly launch into the air, towards Mars, in what some called the most spectacular feat since the 1960s. - NZME
Tom Cruise is known for performing his own stunts in his acclaimed Mission: Impossible movie series. But the look of shock on the A-list star’s face during a helicopter flying action scene filmed in Queenstown seems to say it all. Cruise spent about five weeks in the South Island filming scenes for the sixth film in the franchise, Fallout, due for release on August 2. Behind-the-scenes footage released by the film’s movie studio Paramount Pictures yesterday shows Cruise gasping in awe as he flies around the picturesque region.
Hosking rankles Lawson She’s one of the most recognisable faces in the culinary world, and yesterday British celebrity cook Nigella Lawson had a heated interview with Mike Hosking. Speaking to the Newstalk ZB host, Lawson was clearly riled when asked for her thoughts on the Me Too movement and her place as a woman in television. Asked if she felt well treated “in general” as a female in her industry, Hosking added that he was “sort of sick of the subject”. A taken aback Lawson responded: “You’re sick of the subject?” “Well,’ continued Hosking, “is the industry sort of festering with sexism, generally?” Lawson answered: “Look, the world has a lot of sexism so, obviously all institutions do to some extent.”

Seven injured in Victoria hot air balloon crash Seven people are in hospital, six with back injuries, after their hot air balloon made a hard landing in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The hot air balloon left the Glenburn area about 7am yesterday before landing heavily on a private property in Dixons Creek, near Kinglake, minutes later. Paramedics assessed 16 people, with seven transported to hospital in a stable condition. Six of the seven patients suffered back injuries and are aged over 50. One woman, aged in her 60s, was taken to Box Hill Hospital
with suspected ankle fractures. Those on board were local and international passengers, police say. Witness Mark told 3AW radio he saw two balloons approaching the ground as he was driving in the area. “I was driving past that way heading to Wodonga. The (two) balloons were getting closer to the ground,” he said. “The basket was on its side and people were close around it. “I thought, ‘That doesn’t look right’.” The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate. - AAP
Set to start world tour The Spice Girls have reportedly confirmed their UK and USA tour. The popular girl band, who announced last week that they were reuniting, are said to be performing their plethora of hits up and down the country in England first, before jetting Stateside – according to DailyMail. The publication also states that their meeting last week, where they were pictured as a full five-piece in six years, was for ‘rough planning’ and their ‘goal is a world tour which will kick off in late summer’. It was also reported that the Spice Girls have no plans for a Vegas residency and no plans to record new music.

Easy As – How to
create concrete garden borders Getting started 1. Run a string line where you want to lay your pavers. You can use a reinforcing rod or peg to fix the string line to. Ensure the line is tight.
HANDY HINTS
2. If your section is slightly sloping or uneven, fix your string line 100mm off the ground. This will be your point of reference, or ‘datum’ throughout the whole job and ensures that the edging will be straight and even.
If you’re laying a long stretch of edging, or it’s a hot day, lay 4 to 5 pavers at a time so your concrete doesn’t set and become unworkable.
Getting it done 1. Dig a trench wide enough to fit your chosen edging, and deep enough for a layer of base material and concrete. Our edging is 50mm thick so we need 50mm of concrete on top of a 20mm scoria basecourse. The edging pavers will settle 10mm into the concrete, so the trench needs to be 110mm deep. 2. Lay in the trench a 20mm deep base-course of scoria and compact it down. 3. Mix concrete according to packet instructions and lay it 50mm deep on top of the scoria and roughly smooth it off. 4. Lay the edging pavers on top of the concrete, making sure they’re placed straight along the string line. When lined up, settle the edging 10mm down into the concrete, and ensure they’re 100mm below the string line. 5. If you need to cut a piece of concrete edging to size you can use an angle grinder with a diamond or concrete cutting blade, or a bolster. 6. Before the concrete sets do a final check that your pavers are in line and level. 7. Wait for the concrete to set, ready for grouting. 8. Mix up your grout and use a pointing trowel to work it into the gaps between the pavers and smooth it out. 9. Use a wet sponge to clean excess grout off pavers to prevent staining.

Keep watering your courgettes and beans - the more you water the bigger they’ll get.
Deadhead your flowers. If you want your flowers to flower longer or flower again, then deadheading is the key.
Remember to water your strawberries and tomatoes too (avoid the leaves on your tomatoes) - the more water they get the juicier their fruit will be.
Deadheading means to remove any fading or dead flower heads from your plants. There are a couple of reasons for doing this – one, it makes the plant look nicer and two, depending on the type of plant it can encourage it to flower again or keep flowering for longer. When a flower loses its petals it starts to form seed heads and focus all its energy on developing more seeds – not flowers. Harvest your corn. Your corn is ready to harvest when the ears have completely filled out. What are the ears? The ears are the part of the plant that contain the cob. You can check whether the ear is filled out by feeling the end of the ear where the silks come out. The silks are the furry/ hairy bits sticking out the top. If the end is rounded, blunt and feels full it’s ready.
Henri Ham
AWAPUNI NURSERIES
If it feels pointed at the end it needs a bit longer. The silks on the end of the ear can also help tell you whether it’s ready to harvest or not. When these bits dry up and go brown it will also mean the cob is ready to harvest. Ensure your household has plenty of ingredients for summer salads by remembering to plant lettuce, basil, spring onions and other gourmet herb and vegetable seedlings every couple/few weeks.
If you don’t have any tomatoes yet on the plants, use a paintbrush (or even an electric toothbrush turned on, minus the brush head) to spread the pollen from the flowers on one plant to another plant to pollinate them. Harvest your fennel. And make your excess broccoli into broccoli soup to freeze for autumn meals. And give your oregano a trim. Cut it back so the stems are around 50mm from the ground. This will stop the plant going leggy. You can dry the removed branches. Once the branches are dry, peel the leaves off and chop them up then store in a jar for use in your cooking.

Momentum with Morgan M organ Motor Company has announced record profitability and growth as it continues to roll out a long-term strategy plan under the guidance of Chairman Dominic Riley, Managing Director Steve Morris and family shareholders – keeping up the positive momentum in the family owned business. Year-end financial reports released this week announce record growth from the 109-year-old company with a 19 percent increase in revenue against 2016 to £36m, improved group margins with an increase of 12 per cent, a 13 per cent increase in group net assets and an increase in pre-tax profits to £2m. Last year saw strong performances from all sectors of the Morgan business, including a new technological partnership with Frazer Nash for EV development, futureproofing with long-lead new model planning and strategic in-house appointments within the management team coupled with increased marketing activity. Product sales continue to be strong with export sales up 10 per cent. Recently launched models, the Aero GT and 50th Anniversary V8, sold out upon unveiling and all vehicles produced at Malvern continue to be pre-sold, with no vehicles being produced for pre-registration. Last year also saw the re-acquisition of the land on which the factory is built, plus the purchase of the Visitor Centre has proved a significant investment which helps to provide stable foundations for Morgan’s future growth plans and reverses a land buy-back deal that has been effective since 2006. Steve Morris, Managing Director, said: “The last year has seen us develop our long-term strategy for sustainable new products and exciting development plans. Far from resting on our laurels we are looking forward to a strong 2018, the next stage of which will see some brand new cars being unveiled at Geneva in a few weeks’ time.”

Minty’s a true delight
S
he’s a delightful little lady, is the description John Rickard comes up with when he talks about Minty. Minty is an Austin Seven Opal Roadster. She was among the last of her model to be produced and the registry office records indicate Minty was first registered in Ashburton on 4 November 1938. She was christened Minty by her first owner, a teacher at Hampstead School. Several other Ashburtonians owned Minty but by 1970 she was showing her age and ended up in a local wrecker’s yard. Thankfully along came John Rickard. It’s not surprising John – a member of a family who are keen on cars – couldn’t resist Minty’s charms and after parting with $55 for her and a spares car John became Minty’s next proud owner. Minty liked her new home on the Rickard family farm at Wakanui and particularly enjoyed the attention lavished on her by John and his father Fred, who set about a full restoration of the little beauty. They did almost all of the work themselves including repainting Minty in her original colours, which really suits her. John had never painted a car before, nor since, and he says he learnt a lot, but it must have been a good lesson because a great result was achieved and the paint is still the same almost 48 years later. Especially during their retirement, John’s late parents Fred and Margaret enjoyed driving Minty on many rallies and these
days having a little more recreational time themselves, John and his wife Margaret have taken over that role. Under her bonnet Minty’s 750cc four cylinder motor, which drives through a 4 speed gearbox, ticks over like clockwork and propels the little lady along very smoothly and comfortably at a reasonable speed. Minty’s longest trip took place in 2005, when John drove her from Bluff to Kaitaia on the Austin Centennial run. In total she has clocked up just 56,000 miles. It was a drive John looks back on with pleasure and which Minty took in her stride, never missing a beat. Being the delightful little lady she is,
Minty attracts a lot of attention and receives many compliments which she doesn’t mind a bit. And no doubt Minty will receive lots more compliments this weekend when John and Margaret take her along to Austins in Ashburton, the national rally of the Vintage Austin Register. It will be a chance for Minty to catch up with her cousins. Over the weekend vintage Austin enthusiasts from around the country are here for a gathering which will see them touring around our district. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to see Minty and her relatives and meet their owners during a Show and Shine at the Vintage Car Club on Sunday February 11. Minty is hoping people
will come and say hello to her. Opal is an appropriate model name for Minty, because she really is a little gem, one of just a small number of Opals in New Zealand. Interestingly Minty is not the only one in Ashburton – Owen and Lorraine Wilson also have an Opal which is slightly older than Minty. We wouldn’t normally mention a lady’s age, but we don’t think Minty won’t mind us saying she will be celebrating her 80th birthday later this year. And we know she is pleased to have been a member of the Rickard family for more than half her life. John Rickard is right; Minty is a delightful little lady, one who has given pleasure to others and deserves all compli she receives. the compliments
John Rickard is a very proud owner of Minty, the Austin Seven Opal Roadster.

Austins to descend upon Ashburton
E
ach year the Vintage Austin Register a group dedicated to Austin vehicles manufactured up to 1939 holds an annual national rally. These events alternate between the North and South Island. It’s the Mainland’s turn this year and the Register’s rally will be based locally this weekend. Register Secretary Teresa Clements from Kaiapoi says Austins in Ashburton has attracted entries from around 90 enthusiasts travelling in over 50 vehicles. Teresa says: “We’ve got people coming from all around the country in a variety of models”. The Register is delighted with the response, which means we’ll see some fascinating cars about town. Keen Austin enthusiasts Teresa and her husband Kerry are bringing their 1924 Austin 12/4 and are looking forward to touring our district and visiting local attractions. Teresa praises a great organising committee;, including local members Owen and Lorraine Wilson for coming up with a brilliant programme. Members of the public will have a chance to look at the cars and meet their owners during a Show and Shine at the Vintage Car Club on Maronan Road between 10.00 am and noon on Sunday. Enthusiasts Jerry and Margaret Wing from North Otago are amongst those coming to Austins in Ashburton.
parts missing, but thankfully they had been stored separately and he was able to retrieve them. The delivery van, which spent its earlier days in Wellington, was restored by Jerry in time for the Austin centennial celebrations in 2005. Jerry and Margaret Wing are looking forward to coming to Austins in Ashburton, which they say will be an opportunity to meet, spend time with and share stories with fellow enthusiasts.
Jerry and Margaret Wing’s Austin Seven delivery van. They will be driving their beautifully restored 1929 Austin Seven delivery van. Keen members of the Vintage Car Club over the years, Jerry and Margaret have owned a variety of interesting vehicles in which they have taken part in many rallies.
Austin Sevens appeal to Jerry and he found the van, or more particularly as he puts it “a pile of bits”, in a shed in Southland quite a few years ago. Jerry quips that after taking the pile of bits home he discovered there were a few

OUR VIEW
Police deserve our understanding S
urely, we are not that far off the spectrum that those who sit on the seats of power can ignore our pleas for much longer. We’ve said it before and we’ll probably say it again, we’ve got a problem here in Ashburton with petty and opportunistic crime and it would appear that the only way we are going to get on top of it is through weight and numbers. But our hard-working and loyal boys and girls in blue are at full stretch at the moment and could do with a helping hand. Yet our Police Minister doesn’t seem to want to know us and the efforts of those who continue to push for a reconsideration when
it comes to where he allocates policing resources. And what an opportunity that has been missed if that is the case. No matter what way some might like to see it – this district is still very much a National stronghold. Yes, the margin decreased at the last election, but we are still, as a collective, traditionally blue.
So, if you’re Labour – sitting up there with your fresh tan from a trip up to Waitangi – surely there’s a chance to swing things back to the red corner by making a positive change for the good in this district. Push some resource our way. Help out our police. Minimise this ridiculous crime spree that we are in the middle of and all of a sudden you become more favourable and those who sit ever so daintily on the fence may all of a sudden be falling to your side as opposed to falling the way they usually do. You can guarantee that won’t be taken into consideration though – we are but a small blip
on the national radar when it comes to the big house – that part of the Mainland that sits in between a couple of rivers with a mountain and lake and not a lot else with people who are self-sufficient and just get things done no matter the problem. As he should do in his role as our elected member of Parliament, Andrew Falloon continues to fight for what is right and while he is doing things that have an impact on the everyday lives of those who live within this district, we will continue to document his activities. Whether you voted red, blue, black, green or for the one with the haze of funny-smelling
smoke – you have to agree that he’s pushing the right agenda and making sure our frustrations are heard and understood. In the past week there has been a bit of frustration aired in the direction of our police team and while it is understandable that people want whoever is walking around our streets and committing these acts behind bars pronto – we need to understand that police actually want that too. Ultimately, it isn’t their fault that they are stretched to the absolute maximum at the moment and literally can’t do much more than they already are, so we need to be a little bit understanding on that front.

OFF THE AIR
I
t was about 11am on Saturday that I felt the first real pang in my tummy. Mind you I did wake up just a little bit dusty after an evening with my brothers and uncle. It was a flying visit from the US and Aussie wings of my family, so I wanted to spend as much time with them as possible. Well that and the idea that a few craft beers the night before the wedding would help with sleeping. I think it was when I picked up my best man Josh that the first sign of nerves became evident. It’s amazing how quickly the morning flew by, it felt like five minutes had gone by from when I last thought ‘there’s plenty of time to get ready yet’, to ‘jeez I better get my butt into gear’. As it turns out we had plenty of time! One of my very best mates, Charlie Jaine, made sure we arrived in style in his 69 Mustang and we even had time for a “mainer” down East Street. We were very close to high fiving each other when we pulled into Morris Road at 1.28pm. We had planned on being at Aeroview at 1.30pm to mingle for half an hour before kick-off. We pulled in, looking very cool with the hood down and sunnies on. Where the hell was everyone? Yep we were the first to arrive! “You sure we’ve got the right day?” Charlie asked. Our host duly arrives out with a beer and tells us to take off for a while. At 1.52pm we head back into the venue, pretty much as

YOUR VIEW my brothers and uncle were arriving. Just as I was thinking, that’s cutting things close, we got the message that the bride was running 10 to 15 minutes late. Phew! En route to the venue in the 66 Mustang, before their “mainer”, the girls discovered they were missing the bouquets. That was followed by another discovery, locked house, key in another vehicle. The father-in-law’s recollection of the break-in via the toilet window, made for a very funny part of his speech later in the evening. The service (after the revised kick-off time of 2.30pm) was great. Relaxed, funny and not too long – much like the rest of the evening which absolutely flew by! Even though we only had around 100 attend the “celebration” (booze up) we were both flat out trying to get around everyone for a yarn, as well as busting a few shapes on the dance floor. I’m pretty sure I was wander-

ing round all night with a stupid grin on my face, mainly because I was marrying such a stunning bride, but I was also very proud of my best man. Josh’s reading at the service and speech at the celebration were both mint. It was so good to see my relations from overseas and old mates from all over New Zealand and already the “we must not leave it so long between drinks next time” texts have been flying around.

I read in the paper of February 5, about [grass] clippings clogging red bins. If the council had carried out what they said when recycling came to Ashburton anything that was recyclable would be now at the tip. But no, the council charged us to dump grass clippings and garden waste and then sold it back to us as compost – but it wasn’t any good anyhow. And now I see they are thinking of a user-pays for red bins if we fill it with clippings and garden waste, but that’s a rubbish bin is it not? That’s why we have a red bin for rubbish to replace the black bags which were to top up with what the are moaning about. If you, the council, had got it right the first time and got a green bin as well all would be ok. Furthermore, we are the ratepayers and some of us have not got a bottomless pit full of money. Cut spending on buildings and things we don’t need and get it right before the next brainwave comes. Please. David McCormick

In brief
■ SHORTER WORK WEEK
Four days; same salary Monday to Friday has long been the typical work-week experience, but one New Zealand business is questioning whether this status quo should persist. In March, Perpetual Guardian, a firm which deals with wills and trust funds, will introduce a four-day week for a period of six weeks across the business of over 200 staff in a bid to measure what impact this will have on productivity within the company. Workers’ salaries will remain the same and the length of the workday will not be increased over the course of the six-week period. “We have seen cases where employees work longer hours for fewer days of the week or they earn 75 per cent of their fulltime salary, but that is not what we are doing here,” says Perpetual Guardian founder Andrew Barnes. Perpetual Guardian head of people and capability Christine Brotherton pointed to international research showing a cor-
relation between employee engagement and productivity. “If employees are engaged with their job and employer, they are more productive,” Brotherton said. “This is why we are adopting this trial. We believe efficiency will come with more staff focus and motivation.” Brotherton said there is a growing demand among staff for greater flexibility and this is a step in that direction. In a recent internal survey at Perpetual Guardian, 80 per cent of staff said they were happy with the levels of flexibility when it came to annual leave, but this number dropped to 72 per cent when they were asked whether they saw their work arrangements as flexible. The figure was even lower, at 66 per cent, when staff were asked whether they could give equal priority to work and family life and still be considered for a promotion. “This raises a number of questions for us,” Brotherton said.

Michael Hill takes hit Michael Hill International expects first-half earnings will more than halve with A$20 million coming from the jewellery chain’s exit from the US and scaling back its Emma & Roe branded store footprint. The Brisbane-based company said earnings before interest and tax was about A$20 million in the six months ended December 31, down from A$40 million a year earlier. Of that, about A$8.4 million arises from onerous lease provisions and another A$11.4 million from impairment charges on property, plant and equipment, it said in a statement. - NZME

Listed-residential property developer CDL Investments New Zealand, controlled by hotel operator Millennium & Copthorne Hotels New Zealand, isn’t overly concerned by planned law changes for foreign buyers, although it warns the tweaks may block the consenting pipeline. vide a great place to work?” Brotherton believes it could guide the company toward increasing engagement and thereby productivity in the workforce. The trial could also perhaps have implications for the broader New Zealand workforce. According to research from the World Economic Forum, New Zealand ranked 20th among OECD countries in terms of the number of hours worked annually. New Zealand workers put in 1752 hours over the course of 2016, well ahead of the 1363 hours put in by the Germans. Other countries on the lower end of the scale included Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and France. Despite enjoying the shortest working hours among OECD member countries, Germany manages high productivity levels, with data showing a German worker to be 27 per cent more productive than his or her British counterpart (who works 1676 hours a year). - NZME

t’s been a rollercoaster for markets this week, with indexes across the globe registering declines. The three main indexes in the US finished last week having experienced their biggest sell down in more than two years. The sell down spread across the globe from there, even sending our local NZX 50 down more than 2 per cent on Monday. Further selling overnight on Monday in the US, again sent markets lower, however, the NZX 50 was left of the hook to a certain extent as it was closed for Waitangi Day. Rising fears of a return to inflation have been the key driver behind the market sell down. A better than expected jobs report was released on Friday in the US showing that 200,000 jobs were added in January, 20,000 more than was expected. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1 per cent. What really captured the markets attention was the acceleration in wage growth. January saw wages rise 0.3 per cent, taking annual wage inflation to 2.9 per cent, the fastest wages have grown since June 2009. With wage growth rising, expectations for inflation have also risen, sending bond yields higher and investors running to safe haven assets. Although scary on the face of things, the pullback is almost a little overdue, with markets having run exceptionally hard.
Jeremy Flood ON THE MARKETS
The S&P 500 in the US has gained more than 35 per cent over the past 15 months without including dividend. Our own NZX 50 recorded twelve consecutive months of gains last year. Also when looking at the economic data that has come out recently, there are no signs of a full bear market emerging. There are no recessionary alarm bells ringing as economic data remains strong and corporate earnings growth remains robust. The latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw the third consecutive rise in prices. The 5.9 per cent gain was driven by expectations for milk supply to remain constrained as drought conditions continue to hamper production. Prices rises occurred across all product groups, with the key product for NZ farmers, whole milk powder seeing a 7.6 per cent gain. Fonterra cut the forecast farmgate milk payout to $6.40 per kilo of milk solids in December last year. Earlier this year, the company also cut back its forecast milk collection on the back of the poorer
weather conditions. Fourth quarter labour data for New Zealand surprised to the upside with the unemployment rate dropping to 4.5 per cent, a nine year low. We are still a wee way off our lowest ever level of unemployment, which occurred just prior to the global financial crisis and was 3.3 per cent. There was a small drop in the participation rate but what was most interesting was the increase in the underutilisation rate. This is a measure of the potential labour supply and unmet need for work and it rose to 12.1 per cent for the quarter. In addition this, wage growth domestically remains muted. There was a 1.8 per cent increase in wages for the year ended December 2017 and much of this can be attributed to the change in legislation for care workers. As was expected, the RBNZ left the official cash rate on hold at 1.75 per cent at its latest meeting. Although acknowledging that global economic conditions have improved, numerous risks remain, and the kiwi dollar continues to be high, although the RBNZ believes that this will moderate. The central bank believes that monetary policy will remain accommodative for a considerable period of time. Jeremy Flood works for Craigs Investment Partners. ■ MIRACLE MILE
Record books in danger By AdAm HAmilton Lazarus is primed to smash the track record and can run a 1min46sec Menangle mile. That’s the word from trainer-driver Mark Purdon now Lazarus has settled in Sydney ahead of his Miracle Mile assault. Like all Miracle Mile hopes, Lazarus will have to go through a qualifier at Menangle on Saturday week ahead of the main event on February 24. Asked whether the sprint trip negated some of Lazarus’ recent dominance in staying races, Purdon conceded maybe a little, but then predicted a record run from the best horse he’s ever trained. “I wouldn’t say he’d have a dominance factor over the mile, but he would certainly run a great mile … he will run 1min46sec if needed,” he said. Remembering Have Faith In Me set the track record with his 1min47.5sec Miracle Mile win in 2016. Purdon revealed last Saturday night’s Hunter Cup was both one of his greatest moments in the sport and the defining win so far in Lazarus’ career. “All those Group 1 wins are great victories and he’s had a lot of them, but that one the other night really made a statement. “It showed everyone he was clearly the best horse going around,” he said. “I’ve said for a long time he’s the best I’ve trained.” Lazarus enjoyed a lazy Sunday after his Hunter Cup win then travelled to Sydney on Monday. “One of the great things about him is how well he bounces back from hard runs like that,” Purdon said. “Once he’d settled in here (Sydney on Tuesday), he was really bright and full of himself again. You wouldn’t know he’d had a hard run.” Purdon was also asked about the Menangle factor given Lazarus was beaten into third spot in last year’s Miracle Mile. “It’s not an issue. “He won the Chariots Of Fire here and when he ran third in that Miracle Mile, he probably wasn’t as good as I’d like to have had him on that night,” he said. - HRNZ

NZ mares tackle Sibelia Leading Kiwi pacing mares Partyon, Piccadilly Princess and Delishka will get the best opportunity to snare black type success from good barrier draws in Saturday night’s Sibelia Stakes at Menangle. The $40,000 Group 3 sees impressive last-start winner Delishka start from barrier one for Brad Mowbray while the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen duo, Partyon (2) and Piccadilly Princess (3), will start next to her. Harness Jewels winner Rocker Band will also contest the feature race for the Sydney stable of Mark Jones with Anthony Butt picking up the reins. - NZHN
Paddy ruled out A bruised heel will prevent Authentic Paddy from chasing a second Group One win at Te Rapa tomorrow. Trainer Lisa Latta confirmed yesterday the eight-year-old won’t be taking his part in the Herbie Dyke Stakes. “He’s got a bruised heel and won’t be going to Te Rapa,” Latta said. “We’re getting on top of it and instead he can still go to the mile at Otaki then to Auckland on March 10.” - NZME
Jasd sold to Hong Kong Unbeaten three-year-old gelding Jasd will be making his way to Hong Kong after being sold by Waikato bloodstock agent Bryce Tankard to clients of expatriate New Zealand trainer Paul O’Sullivan. Formerly trained by Tony Pike, Jasd won impressively on debut at Taupo by nearly two lengths late last year before winning his only other start at Trentham. - NZME

Cunning Fox has Gulliver despairing
Punters will be holding their breath to see if Shadow Fox gets up to his tricks today.
Stratford trainer Steve Gulliver admits he doesn’t know what result to expect from his talented galloper Shadow Fox in the Carters Ashhurst Pohangina Cup at Awapuni today. “He’s got all the ability in the world, but he keeps holding his breath,” Gulliver said. “He’s done it in all his last five starts and he even does it at home when I’m working him. “You can’t gallop him without him holding his breath. “I thought he must be hurting so I got the Waikato vet down and he went right through him and couldn’t find anything. “He’s always done it, but he’s got worse and worse. I’ve changed bits and tried everything, but he still does it. “It’s gutting because he’s up to winning good races, but you can’t have any confidence in him. “He did it three times when he ran in the Anniversary last time. “That’s why I’m dropping him back to 1200m on Friday. Hopefully he only gets to do it once.” Despite his bad habit, Shadow Fox has won seven of his 23 starts and been placed on eight occasions. He had won the previous start, at Awapuni, over 1200 metres when setting the pace with Johnathan Parkes aboard. “That’s the last time Johnathan was aboard and he’s back on him on Friday so I hope he can get him through it,” Gulliver said. - NZME
Racegoers in Queensland could get the opportunity to see smart Kiwi stayer Jon Snow in his upcoming campaign. Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have the Group One winning son of Iffraaj back in work after a mixed Melbourne campaign in spring. Placed in the Caulfield Stakes and a strong winner of the JRA Cup, Jon Snow was a late withdrawal from last year’s Melbourne Cup due to a foot issue. - NZME
Easter Handicap target Romancer will have another sprint outing before he is stepped out over more ground. “The only race for him is the Darley Plate on Derby Day and then he’ll head toward the Easter at Pukekohe, it’s back to a handicap so that will suit him,” cotrainer Chris Gibbs said. Romancer won a Rating 70 event over 1400m at Ruakaka last month before he finished strongly for second in the Concorde at Ellerslie. - NZME
Matamata mission Lisa Latta has decided against another trip to Ellerslie with Five To Midnight before his bid on the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup next month. Five To Midnight’s last two runs have been at Ellerslie, resulting in a third to Zacada in the Avondale Cup. Rather than head back up to Ellerslie to top off Five To Midnight’s Auckland Cup preparation with a run in the Nathan’s Memorial at Ellerslie on Saturday week, the Awapuni trainer now plans to wait a week and start him in the Listed Marks Ewen & Associates Kaimai Stakes at Matamata. - NZME

In brief
Senior cricket needs more than a quick fix
I
n order for a sporting organisation to be successful at the highest levels they must first provide the right tools to aid their representative teams in their pursuit of success. We are a small fish here in Mid Canterbury, but we splash about in a rather large pond and for the most part – we hold our head reasonably high above the water, yet there’s no doubt in some sectors of the sporting realm we could be even better. And a lot of that comes down to preparation and providing the correct platforms for which our local stars can grow and hone their skills before they go out and try to out-swim the biggest fish in the pond. Rugby does it well here locally. Their training programmes and the time and effort put into developing player skill sets is impressive and the results put up by the representative sides are a true testament to that.
But some other sports struggle and unfortunately a lot of it comes down to that horribly debilitating combination of dollars and cents. I don’t want to pick one particular sport out, but cricket has its battles. We have a good Mid Canterbury senior cricket side at the moment, who should be competitive in the qualifying stages of the Hawke Cup, but a glaringly obvious issue is potentially the main reason they aren’t doing it. Hawke Cup cricket is two-day cricket – a big challenge for any cricketing side at that particular level. The requirement of players to adjust their play from their normal club style of scoring quick runs and bowling for wickets as opposed to minimising runs is huge and it’s a change in style that we have struggled with over the years. We don’t have two-day

cricket at a club level here and that is a big part of the reason that we sometimes struggle with that transition. But unfortunately, there’s no obvious quick fix to remedy the situation as a two-day competition here just isn’t viable. And you have to feel for Mid Canterbury Cricket. We will make no bones here, the state of senior cricket in Mid Canterbury is pretty dire. From our population of more than 30,000 people, we are only able to field 44 players on any given week to play senior cricket. Let’s say, for arguments sake – there are 75 people across the
five senior cricket sides – that’s 0.25 per cent of the local population that are playing cricket at a senior level. Concerning isn’t it? But with those figures in mind – how can a new two-day competition in which players get the chance to hone their skills at the longer style of the game be justified? The onus should fall on the sport’s controlling organisation – but when the players just aren’t there, how can you blame them? Perhaps it is time we put all our energy into pushing for four really strong Mid Canterbury based sides and pushing our attention to a combined competition with those either north or south of us. Not only will that create more opportunities for our players – but the necessary skills that are probably lacking at a higher honour should, in theory, become non-existent.
Fourteen kilometres and counting – Steve Carr is pitting himself against workmates around the country for the Aotearoa Bike Challenge.
Umpires got it wrong England captain Eoin Morgan reckons the third umpire got it wrong in their T20 loss to Australia but admits there’s no simple way to get a clear call on close catches. Glenn Maxwell blasted 103 to guide Australia to back-to-back wins in the tri-series tournament. But he looked to have been caught on 59 by a low catch to Jason Roy at long-off. On-field umpire Gerard Abood gave a ‘soft signal’ of out but his decision was overturned by Chris Brown. “Jason said it was out,” Morgan said. “I trust the player’s call.” In commentary former Australian captain Michael Clarke said it was “100 per cent” out. - AAP
Wade fined $6000 Former test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has been fined $6000 for poor conduct during Hobart’s BBL final loss to Adelaide Strikers. Cricket Australia fined Wade after he was run out for a diamond duck and smashed his bat in frustration against the seat. Wade was the star in the Hurricanes’ semi-final win over Perth Scorchers but was relegated to No.6 in the batting line-up for the final. This was the 30-year-old’s second level 1 offence this year, after getting in the face of dismissed Sydney Thunder batsman Jos Buttler on New Year’s Day. - AAP
Stags stay on top A brilliant partnership between Seth Rance and Adam Milne has ensured their Central Stags side remains on top of the Ford Trophy after seven rounds. Rance and Milne came together at 180-7, chasing 258 for victory over Wellington, and put on 78 off 62 balls to win with three overs to spare. Meanwhile in Dunedin, Nick Kelly registered the only century of the round, smashing 106 off 92 balls as his Northern Districts side posted a huge 341-8, and the Volts were never in the chase. Canterbury won just their second match of the competition, scoring 266 and then dismissing second-placed Auckland for just 228. - NZME

Steve up for big challenge BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Steve Carr of Ashburton is hoping to clock up as many kilometres as possible on two wheels this month. The 34-year-old is participating in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, a national workplace cycling initiative held by NZ Transport Agency. The business partner and about 100 of his colleagues at RightWay Limited branches
throughout New Zealand are participating. The challenge kicked off on February 1, and already it has fired up a competitive spirit at the business advisor and chartered accountancy firm. Carr just needs to go online to the challenge website to find out how his colleagues are doing, and this week discovered one of his Auckland co-workers already on 60 kilometres. Carr has done just 14, in a re-
turn trip on the Ashburton River Trail up to Allenton. “For our business it’s really good to be able to challenge each other and engage with everybody,” Carr said. He said he considers himself more of a runner than a cyclist, but the challenge was helping him get back on his bike, and his aim for the month is to get to 150 kilometres. Registrations for the challenge remain open for its dura-
tion throughout February, and a 10-minute journey by bike is all it takes to participate. NZ Transport Agency is hoping this year’s challenge will be bigger and better than last year’s, when more than 14,000 rode almost 2 million kilometres. More than 9000 people from over 1300 organisations have already signed up, including RightWay and ANZ in Ashburton. Registrations are free and prizes are on offer.
Black Caps all-rounder Corey Anderson will make his long-awaited return to first-class cricket on Monday when he fronts for Northern Districts A against an Auckland side in Taupo. The 27-year-old hasn’t played a competitive cricket game since last July, and underwent surgery in September to repair a stress fracture in his back. “I just want to get out there and start running around, playing cricket again,” Anderson said. “You do all the hard work to get back on the park so that’s all I’m aiming for.” - NZME
Workload a factor David Warner’s captaincy is excellent but he’s finding it impossible to maintain prolific runscoring given his workload, Australian selector Mark Waugh says. Waugh admits some concern over Warner’s lean streak with the bat. “I suppose stats-wise, yes,” Waugh said yesterday. “He has had a run of outs. And it’s impossible when you’re playing this much cricket across three formats to keep up a very high level.” - AAP

■ RUGBY
Moore re-appointed Ex-pat Ashburtonian and Women’s World Cup winning Head Coach Glenn Moore will continue his role with the Black Ferns in 2018 and 2019, New Zealand Rugby announced yesterday. Moore has an enviable record with the team since his appointment at the end of 2015, with 15 wins and just one loss from 16 test matches and a 2017 World Cup win. Moore said despite the team’s recent success and impressive record of five World Cup wins, there’s no time for complacency. “It’s an important phase for the Black Ferns as other countries are getting better and better.
“We saw that first-hand in Ireland. “We’ll have some continuity in the team going into this year but in some cases there’ll be some rebuilding among the group going on too. “We need to keep progressing forward and I expect we’ll see some new faces this year. “It’s an exciting time for women’s rugby.” Moore said it was the Black Ferns’ impressive work ethic that he enjoyed working with. NZ Rugby’s General Manager of Rugby, Neil Sorensen, said that Moore’s re-appointment would be popular among his team and also the coaching staff.
Glenn Moore “Glenn works very, very hard for his team and knows how to get the best from them.
“Everyone who watched the Black Ferns World Cup Final against England will remember how Glenn helped his team come back from being behind at half time to deliver the victory he knew they were capable of. “We are thrilled to have him on board for the next two seasons.” Sorensen said the Black Ferns’ 2018 playing schedule would be announced in the coming weeks. Moore was recently named Coach of the Year at the 2017 ASB Rugby Awards and was nominated for ASB Coach of the Year at the Halberg Awards last night.
England wary of Ferns England are threatening to overhaul New Zealand as Australia’s biggest netball threat at the Commonwealth Games, but one of the Roses’ biggest stars has warned against writing off the Silver Ferns. Recent results have prompted suggestions that England may now be the biggest threat to Australia’s prospects of winning gold at the Games. “I guess it would be quite easy based on scorelines to suggest that,” England star Serena Guthrie said. “But the thing about New Zealand is that they always manage to get to a world champs final, so you can’t write them off.”

Black Caps middle order a concern By DaviD Leggat So now they’ve got their 13 for the rest of the Tri-Series, time to find another conundrum for New Zealand’s team bosses to sort out – so how about the batting order. To be more specific, the middle order. The top three are sorted, sort of. Martin Guptill, Colin Munro and captain Kane Williamson, but even there there’s an issue. There’s a solid view that Williamson must open in T20 to get the best out of his particular batting talents. He’s the skipper and he’s the country’s best batsman but the loss in Sydney threw into sharp relief the difficulty here. Williamson, at No 3, laboured to eight off 21 balls that night. His T20 record as an opener is better than at No 3 – 38.51 (strike rate 121.03) in 27 innings vs 32.26 (120.43) in 47 overall. But Guptill and Munro, aggressive and with good records, are locked in at the top, for now. However move into the middle order. You have, in no particular order, Ross Taylor, uncapped wicketkeeper Tim Seifert, fellow debutant-in-waiting Mark Chapman, Colin de Grandhomme, Anaru Kitchen and Mitchell Santner. All could be in the XI to play England in Wellington next Tuesday, along with new ball pair Tim Southee and Trent Boult and legspinner Ish Sodhi. That blend would leave left armer Ben Wheeler out and .... someone else. So there is some hard thinking for selectors Gavin Larsen and coach Mike Hesson. In that middle order mix, who bats where? Or do you have six players padded up to be called in at any moment, depending on the innings situation? You wouldn’t do it in a test or ODI but T20 is short, snappy and it might be one remedy. That requires nimble thinking and players are often peculiar beasts in that they like to know where they are batting. Many don’t like being unsettled in that way. The veteran Taylor averages 40 at a strike rate of 122 when batting at No 5. He smeared 22 not out off 13 balls in Wellington last month against Pakistan at No 5, and his 25 off 11 balls against the same op-
Federer aiming high Roger Federer could become the oldest man to hold the world No.1 ranking after accepting a late wildcard to the ATP tournament in Rotterdam. The 36-year-old Swiss won his sixth Australian Open title and 20th grand slam last month and reaching the semi-finals of the Rotterdam Open in Holland would return him to top spot in the ATP rankings. He would also surpass Andre Agassi as the oldest world No.1 – the American was 33 when his sixth stint ended in September 2003.
The drums have been beating loudly for Mark Chapman to play a role for the Black Caps, after he has scored a truckload of runs for Auckland and previously for Hong Kong.
ponents a few days later at Mount Maunganui in that series decider was at No 6, a fast, violent assault in a lost cause. His 24 off 35 in Sydney came when he had walked in at 16 for three. So there’s a case to put him down one spot, or possibly to No 6, and promote a hitter, perhaps a Seifert or de Grandhomme. Or both. After that it’s anyone’s guess. The two new men, if both play in Wellington, are likely higher than lower in the order. Santner would be the lowest of this group and de Grandhomme simply can’t be wasted down at No 7 again, after his hitting in Sydney in New Zealand’s wretched performance
last weekend when he was the one shining light. You suspect there’s no right and wrong solution, no simple figuring out the right order, so the selectors, and presumably Williamson need to back their hunches. One of Kitchen, or possibly Chapman, may sit out Wellington. Probably Kitchen. Better to get the new man in sooner rather than wait. Whatever. New Zealand need to find a way to stop the losing streak at three. If not, their chances of being in the final at Eden Park on February 21 would correspondingly take a bit hit. - NZME
Kohli colossal again Virat Kohli has continued his scintillating run of form with 160 not out from just 159 balls to take India to 6-303 batting first in the third one-day international against South Africa. Kohli came to the crease at the end of the first over and again dominated his team’s total with a brilliant one-day innings. Shikhar Dhawan chipped in with a valuable 76. India captain Kohli has been in consistently outstanding form in South Africa, and his century was his second in the three one-day games and his third in his last four ODIs. South Africa were all out for 179, with only JP Duminy managing to post a half-century.

In brief Nines, Tens to swap? A location swap of the Brisbane Tens and the NRL’s Auckland Nines could be back on the cards next year. The second edition of the tens kicks off at Suncorp today. But whether it remains in Brisbane appears to hinge largely on the fate of Duco CEO Rachael Carroll’s other pet project, the Auckland Nines – a joint venture with the NRL. The Nines is on hold this year but will be shifted to Australia. Where is the big question. Suncorp seems the obvious option, but there are doubts whether Queensland could financially support both the nines and the tens. - AAP
Genia in doubt
Marcus Armstrong heads into the final round at Manfeild this weekend with two prestigious titles in his sights.
■ MOTOR RACING
Big double beckons By Dale BuDge Championship leader Marcus Armstrong has a balancing act to get right this week as he aims to win both the Toyota Racing Series and the New Zealand Grand Prix. The 17-year-old has dominated the one-make championship this summer and finds himself with a healthy but not unassailable lead heading into this weekend’s final round at Manfeild. While his main goal is to take out the championship, he would dearly love to get his name on the most famous piece of motorsport silverware in New Zealand. Many of the greatest names in world motorsport have won the New Zealand Grand Prix –
McLaren, Amon, Stewart, Brabham, Surtees, Moss and Rosberg to name a few. In recent years many of New Zealand’s leading drivers have won it including Paul Radisich, Craig Baird, Greg Murphy, Fabian Coulthard, Earl Bamber, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy. “It would mean a lot to win that race,” Armstrong said. “I have been watching it on television since I was very young. “I remember watching the Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy race when Nick spun out on the last corner. In particular I remember that one.” Armstrong is torn between putting it all on the line to win the race and banking a wellearned championship in which
he has not put a foot wrong. “If it means winning the race is risking the championship it is going to be a difficult decision for me,” Armstrong explained. “The championship is the priority but if I am in a position to win the Grand Prix I can’t say I will take it easy. “The margin is not as big as I would have liked but then it is not extremely close. “I think the first two races (of the weekend) are about being in a decent position to make the Grand Prix more comfortable. “I don’t think we can win the championship before the last race. “If I am starting off the front row in the Grand Prix it is going to be all on.”
The Ferrari Young Driver Academy member has employed a tactic to bank championship points on offer and not fight for position and risk losing out this season. But while he has executed it perfectly, there is still frustration bubbling under the surface. “It has been extremely frustrating at times to just sit there and not do anything,” he admitted. “When you try and overtake in these cars it is very risky. It has been painful at times – coming in after the race and standing on the second or third spot of the podium hasn’t been ideal. “I’ve just had to use my head a wee bit.” A double on the weekend will make it all worthwhile. - NZME
A fractured back looks likely to rob Wallabies halfback Will Genia of a return to his beloved Suncorp Stadium and planned Melbourne Rebels debut. Genia arrived in Queensland to play for the Rebels but said he was still to be cleared after suffering the back injury at training. The 30-year-old, who joined the Melbourne Super Rugby side this season on a two-year deal, said he was kicked in the back by hooker Jordan Ulesese. “I fractured something in the lower part of my back,” he said. “But I’m here because I want to play so I’m still hoping to get out there.” - AAP

The agency has revealed that the case against Fury and his cousin Hughie cost almost £600,000 in legal fees alone after being forced to disclose how much public money it ploughed into its botched prosecution. - AP
Chief defends agency World Anti-Doping Agency president Craig Reedie has launched a staunch defence of the global agency’s role in the Russian drugs scandal. The systematic use of performance-enhancing drugs at the Sochi Olympics by Russian athletes has had a chaotic impact in the hours before the 2018 Games. “We take the belief that the WADA system actually works because it did expose wrongdoing on a massive scale.” - PA

But midway through the lesson, her phone rang. Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby was calling to tell her she had made the team for the Commonwealth Games. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re not the weather; you’re the sky. Do you see the sky clinging to the white clouds or trying to trap the rain in one place? The sky doesn’t have to push or pull the weather along. It only needs to let it happen. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Your reputation precedes you. Don’t worry: It’s stellar, not because of your excellent public relations plan, but because you do the right thing consistently and people trust you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The details of self-care will be worth every penny. It’s not about being who they want you to be. It’s about a presentation that allows you to lose all self-conscious so you can relax and be your best. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’re willing to take the steps to further your professional life, except you’re not so sure what they are. Ask someone who’s been there. Bonus points if they have nothing to lose or gain from your decisions. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): People will perform to their potential because of the example of excellence you set. So don’t worry about leading your people. You’ll lead them just by being masterly at what you do. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): On a viral video, a boy waves slowly to a lizard. The lizard waves slowly back. Some laugh. Some take it as a sign, but of what? You look for evidence of CGI: You’re not a sceptic, but you’re nobody’s fool. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): A firm set of rules about relationships allows you to have more people in your life. With awesome boundaries and structures in place, you won’t be afraid to be taken advantage of or ill-appreciated. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Pay attention to the things you do when you’re supposed to be doing something else. Those activities are more than distractions. They are pulling you for a reason. Could they be a key to your purpose? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Although it’s never too late to set things straight, think twice. Make sure you have all relevant information. There’s nothing worse than having to take back amends. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): There’s so much hype today with people wanting you to buy things, buy into their story, etc. Disconnect from the dramabarrage in favour of simple pleasures such as a walk, a cuppa or experiencing beauty. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Super-sight is yours today. You’ll see how it really is and how it will be, . You should be warned not to make a decision based purely on the potential in things. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): When it all starts to get out of hand, that will be a positive occurrence – an affirmation that your life is a co-creation with the universal forces. So, you can’t control it all. Good! Why would you ever want to?

Cavalier attitude costly BY MATT MARKHAM
MATT.M@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Bat, then bat some more and then bat some more again – and then, just for good measure bat for even longer. That’s the message for the Mid Canterbury cricket side ahead of their Hawke Cup clash with North Otago in Ashburton this weekend from coach Garfield Charles, as those in the baggy green and yellow struggle to make the transition from short-form cricket to the two-day version of the game. “There’s no doubt that it’s been our major problem,” Charles said yesterday. “We head out with a cavalier attitude and throw the bat around thinking it’s a 45 over game and lose wickets cheaply. “In an ideal two-day game, you’ll be play-
ing for 100-105 overs in a day and if you’re batting first, you want to be batting for 80-90 overs which is double what most of these guys are used to.” With two outright losses next to their name, Mid Canterbury’s chances of a Hawke Cup challenge are slim, if not nonexistent, so building a bit of confidence and helping the young side grow in stature is key this weekend against a strong North Otago side who have torn them apart in the past. Pound for pound, Charles has no fears that the Mid Canterbury boys are capable of matching it at this level, but application and using their cricket smarts will be key to success. “Dropping early catches and allowing
batsmen opportunities to get settled have been another issue and something we’ve been working on – as well as the batting situation. “They boys have trained really well this week though and I’m hopeful of a performance that I know we are capable of.” A few selection issues have muddied the waters ever so slightly, but the side does welcome back a key cog in the wheel in Nick Gilbert, who has been in good form for his Lauriston club side in recent weeks. “Nick has some good runs on the board for us from earlier games and his addition back to the top order of the batting line-up will be a good help I think.” Gilbert will slot back into one of the opening batting roles, with James Southby
and Des Kruger both options to fill the other spot, as well as Bo Houston who opens for Coldstream. The side will be without regular wicketkeeper Matt Winter, who is unavailable due to a wedding, so Cam Jopson has joined the side. The university student played for St Bede’s last year so comes with good experience and can slot in behind the stumps quite comfortably. Shaun Stagg was also unavailable for selection this weekend. Charles said that Mid Canterbury’s issues in the past with North Otago had been consistency and that was a key target for this weekend’s match which begins tomorrow on the Ashburton Domain Oval.
