MOTORING

You’re dealing with challenging demands and school community expectations ... and running a multimillion dollar operation

An ‘incredibly stressful’ job SAM WINTERBOURN

BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

School principals are experiencing an unhealthy level of stress in jobs at local Mid Canterbury schools and right throughout the country. An independent study commissioned by NZEI has found “disturbingly high” stress rates among New Zealand’s primary school principals when compared with other Kiwis. Those in the profession are suffering 1.8 times more stress than the general population, 2.4 times more trouble sleeping and 1.7

times the rate of burnout. The average number of hours worked by principals has also increased to around 53-58 hours, up from 51-55 in 2016 – however for Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn, that number is closer to 60. “It’s an incredibly stressful occupation … and I’m not home many nights in the course of a week,” he said. “You’re dealing with challenging demands and school community expectations ... and running a multimillion dollar operation …plus I don’t think many other

occupations have so many eyes looking at you on a daily basis.” Winterbourn said he also felt the growing complexity of education and the cumulative effects of societal changes had contributed to the issue. In his 42 years in the industry, he had observed constantly changing pedagogical understandings such as the shift from whole class to individual teaching, and said he felt principals faced a lack of certainty. “It is a rewarding job … but I’m not sure the rewards always outweigh the workload,” he said. The survey identified “lack of

time to focus on teaching and learning” and “sheer quantity of work” as the main sources of stress, but Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said for him, the most stressful part of the job was child welfare. “Like most people I want the best for their children – there is a dynamic between a parent loving a child and being able to nurture a child. Some of these turn into wider questions … how much capacity does NZ society have to finance and provide for families/ students in need?” He said he felt that being in a

“people person” role also brought a simultaneous dose of stress and reward. “Any role or job that deals with people is stressful, as you as the leader negotiate competing priorities [and] agendas.” Melrose said that though the role was stressful, “the ability to manage the stress is part of the role”.

■ IMMIGRATION

Policy tailored to meet regional needs By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Regionalising New Zealand’s immigration policy could bring big wins for staff-strapped employers in the Ashburton District, says Immigration Minister Ian LeesGalloway. In town yesterday, he heard first-hand that proposed cuts to immigration numbers, likely to be between 20,000 and 30,000 a year, would effectively stymie growth in the district. He met with business owners, farmers and district councillors and was given the same message at each meeting – we need migrants to fill yawning gaps in our employment ranks. Policy changes were about more than changing immigration numbers because the numbers did not paint the whole picture. As well as those numbers not being appropriate, the dispersion of migrants across New Zealand was also out of kilter, he said. And while there were no quick fixes, Lees-Galloway said his analysts were working on a rewrite of immigration policies that would see a more regionalised approach taken. In rewriting immigration policies, Labour was faced with a dual problem. Auckland had too many immigrants and an infrastructure that could not cope, while the regions had good infrastructure and employment capacity but not enough immigrants, he said. “We’d like to have a regionals skills labour shortage list that identifies where there are gaps so we could ensure you can get the people you need. The one-sizefits-all model doesn’t work for this. We have to tailor immigration to reflect the needs of each region.” During his Mid and South Canterbury visit, Lees-Galloway was looking for feedback from employers affected by labour shortages and during his Ashburton stopover said the same message about the difficulty in finding staff was being delivered by each group. Developing an immigration policy that would reduce num-

Immigration Minister Ian Lees-Galloway in Ashburton yesterday with Labour list MP Jo Luxton. bers in Auckland at the same time as it delivered the people needed into the regions wouldn’t be easy, he admitted. “It’s challenging but I believe it’s do-able. We all want to fix this today but I believe we’ll have a more regional approach by the end of the year. We want this to work, to be effective in the real world.” Not changing the policy was not an option as New Zealand’s was in a productivity recession. To change that, yawning gaps in regional employment needed to

be filled, Lees-Galloway said. “To do that we need to get people with the right skills into the right places.” While the current policy requires low-skilled immigrants to leave the country after three years, he believes there could be other ways to address this issue that would not hit the regions so hard. For migrants, it was important they were able to come to New Zealand, work, settle and become part of their new community with

some certainty, Lees-Galloway said. “People are far more productive if they feel part of their community.” Ashburton’s net migration was very low and there was no evidence that New Zealanders were losing jobs to migrants, he said. “But we are more concerned about migrants being used as an easy fix when there are other fixes that are better for the economy long term.” As part of a regional policy,

Lees-Galloway is keen to see immigrant skill lists built that reflect actual need and that was the message that was being delivered loudly, clearly and repeatedly in Ashburton, he said. Ashburton could also be a winner as the Government looks for more refugee resettlement locations. With 500 more to be accepted into New Zealand this year, Lees-Galloway said with its housing capacity Ashburton could make its way on to the refugee centre list.

Losing your hearing can be isolating and humiliating, says Hearing New Zealand national president Tony Rush. He now has hearing aids and is enjoying life to the full once again. Susan Sandys reports.

Hearing test gave Rush his life back This week is Hearing Awareness Week and Tony Rush wants everyone to give thought to just how important their hearing is and how easily it can be damaged. The Hakatere Huts resident said about one in five people suffer some form of hearing loss and for as many as 80 per cent of those it is noise-induced. The 73-year-old grand-dad and former Horowhenua District councillor is urging people to protect their hearing. The damage reaped now may not show itself for many years, but it does not go away. “You never get your hearing back, what you lose is gone forever,” Rush said. For himself, he recounts an experience of living in denial until he finally did what his family told him to do and went and had a hearing test about 10 years ago. “You don’t notice it until your partner says ‘For God sakes, you need to get hearing aids’.” Denial is a big part of many suffering with hearing loss and Rush did not even realise how much he was relying on body language and lip reading. “I went and got a hearing test to prove my family wrong, but what I actually found was I had quite severe hearing loss and it was noise-induced.” Rush was a territorial army officer in the infantry from the age of 20 to 45. He served overseas, including as a United Nations military observer on the ceasefire line in Kashmir, but it was mainly on the live-fire rifle range in New Zealand where he did the most damage to his hearing. He said losing one’s hearing could be a humiliating experience. “There are many conversations that go on around you, you are constantly having to say ‘I’m sorry’ and ask people to repeat themselves, and they say ‘It doesn’t matter’.” He even got to the stage of not really wanting to go to cafes for a meal, as

it was isolating to not be able to hear those talking around him. But there had been no looking back since he had his hearing aids and he had now been national president of Hearing New Zealand for a year. “The most marvellous sound in the world is the first time you go outside wearing your hearing aids and you can hear birds singing again,” he said.

Theft puts mayor out of contest By Katie todd

Mayor Donna Favel is out of the running for a pumpkin growing competition at Environment Canterbury after local vandals sabotaged her efforts. Donna and husband David were growing their competition pumpkin for The People’s Pumpkin Project outside the Regent Cinema on Wills Street, but discovered yesterday morning that it had been stolen.

“One of the girls said to me have you harvested your pumpkin? And I said no …” David said. “Some little scum ... had taken it.” The judging of the pumpkins was due to take place in May, after participants received their pumpkin seedling kits back in November. Also partaking in The People’s Pumpkin Project were a number of high profile community members from the Canterbury

region such as Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton, Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee Chair Allen Lim and ECan Councillors John Sunckell, Tom Lambie, and Cynthia Roberts, as well as several Selwyn District schools. David said their pumpkin had already reached a “decent size” when it was taken. “She was probably a foot and a half already.” Locals reported finding a smashed pumpkin outside Ash-

burton Intermediate School yesterday morning, with many speculating it was the one belonging to the Favels. Lim said the People’s Pumpkin Project is intended to challenge participants across the urban and rural sectors to take a step towards building trust and working together, and discuss the sensitive issue of farm water management in an informal setting. A Christchurch duty bar manager who plotted the terrifying armed robberies of her own pub is facing lengthy jail time. Joanne Francis Smith, 47, organised for knifemen to raid The Fitz sports bar and terrorise bar staff, while she played along, pretending to be a frightened victim. Smith told a knifeman when and how to storm the bar, before making off with $38,000 and then $48,000 of bar and pokies cash in armed hold-ups on July 31 and October 29 last year. Smith admitted charges of aggravated robbery at Christchurch District Court yesterday. Judge David Saunders remanded Smith in custody to be sentenced on May 23. - NZME

Zoo loses baby giraffe Auckland Zoo is heart broken over the loss of a three-day-old giraffe calf that became too ill to be saved. The male calf – born on Monday – was euthanised on Wednesday after becoming ill with a high-fever, while blood tests showed his muscles breaking down and his organs failing, Auckland Zoo said. His 16-year-old mum, Rukiya, had a normal pregnancy and smooth birth, her calf was a normal size but he was too weak to stand, which is unusual. - NZN

Deal close at Lyttelton Lyttelton Port Company and the Rail and Maritime Transport Union are close to reaching an agreement and averting a strike, the union says. Lyttelton Port Company has offered a 3 per cent pay increase each year for the next three years, but the union is looking for 4 per cent for the first year – the deal that was accepted by another union on the site last year. Union organiser John Kerr said the difference is less than $150,000 and he’s hopeful the two sides will come to an agreement when they meet again on Monday. - NZN

■ ZONTA

Special gift delivered on an extra special day By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Four local members of Zonta delivered a special gift to the Ashburton Public Library during International Women’s Day yesterday. The global organisation, which seeks to empower women through service and advocacy, have published a history of their clubs ahead of their 100th anniversary next year, and Ashburton Library received a copy hot off the press. Zonta Club of Ashburton Secretary Jeanette Montgomery, President Stephanie Butchard and members Maree O’Neil and Linda Petrie presented Ashburton Library manager Jill Watson with the book yesterday. Butchard said they had already planned to give a copy to the library, but it coincided perfectly with Women’s Day and gave them an opportunity to highlight what they do. The book was written by fellow Zontian and District 16 (New Zealand) historian and archivist Jennifer Laughton and details Zonta’s work in New Zealand. The Zonta Club of Ashburton have helped countless local women to enter the workforce and return to work by handing out a number of scholarships and awards, organising the annual ZAFAA Art Awards and even giving barista courses to inmates at Christchurch prison,

among other efforts. Butchard said they are now gearing up for a breakfast on Saturday to celebrate International

Women’s Day. The breakfast will be held at Ashburton Hotel, and guests will be entertained by author, actor, journalist and come-

dian Michele A’Court. “It should be a great event – we’re expecting around 250 women, and we had over 300

last year,” she said. Zonta has 1200 clubs in 66 other countries around the world, with around 30,000 members.

Opportunity for building All ratepayers apprentices to show off skills

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

to foot bill for rural pools By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Community pools might be built in rural areas, but the cost of running those pools will be carried by every household in the Ashburton District. As they reviewed its draft revenue and financing policy, district councillors had to decide who benefited from the pools and who should foot the $50,000 bill for health and safety upgrading and maintenance. They decided the pools provided a community-wide benefit and therefore all ratepayers should pay. Councillor Neil Brown wasn’t so sure. “This cost needs to go on the

rural amenity rate, they’re rural and rural people get the benefit,” he said. Selwyn Price didn’t agree. “We charge everyone in the community for the EA Networks Centre so I’d support everyone paying for rural pools,” he said. Not everyone had access to rural pools. They were fenced and access was by a key whereas everyone had the opportunity to use the EA Network centres pools, Brown replied. He was unable to sway his fellow councillors and they voted to fund the pools 100 per cent from the uniform annual general charge portion of rates which will see every household paying for their upkeep.

Building apprentices from around the Ashburton District have an opportunity to show their industry what they’re capable of in this year’s NZCB apprentice challenge. The competition will be held in 18 regions nationwide on April 21, and is open to apprentices employed by current NZCB builders or enrolled with Industry Training Association Building (ITAB). All apprentices who take part will receive a prize pack, which includes a t-shirt and merchan-

dise and each regional winner will take home a Makita power tool and progress to the national final in Rotorua in May. Finalists will compete for the Ken Read Memorial Trophy and a prize package valued at over $50,000. Competitors will be advised a week in advance of the structure they are to build, and will be given eight hours to complete it on the day. Apprentices will be provided with durable, trade-quality timber and materials, and their

structures must meet minimum safety standards. Apprentices’ final structures will be scored by a panel of judges who will be assessing a range of building elements including quality of the workmanship, accuracy of measuring and cutting, assembly, and the apprentice’s ability to work to a detailed plan. Apprentices can enter by visiting www.nzcb.nz/apprenticeships/ and filling out the entry form. Entries must be received by March 29.

An ‘incredibly stressful job’ From P1 However, NZEI President Lynda Stuart said the levels of stress and burn-out among her colleagues was “deeply distressing”, and urged that the issue should be addressed as a priority by the new government. “School leaders are showing

signs of poor health and burnout that risks both their own lives, children’s learning and system outcomes,” she said. “Addressing these problems will be a good investment, and save money – and improve the lives of school leaders, their colleagues and their students – in

the long term.” Winterbourn said he felt changes also needed to take place to ensure the profession continues to attract new people. “If you want to attract people of a certain calibre, you’ve got to make it attractive.”

■ CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT COURT

Two charged over local burglaries By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

Two men charged with a burglary at the Devon Tavern and an attempted burglary at Hotel Ashburton appeared in Christchurch District Court yesterday. Canterbury Police arrested the two men, aged 18 and 28, in relation to a “number of recent commercial burglaries” in the South and Mid Canterbury areas. The pair have been linked to the attempted burglary of Hotel Ashburton’s Turf Bar on Tuesday night and the burglary of the Devon Tavern on Saturday night, and may be linked to further incidents. At the Devon Tavern, a vehicle was driven into the front door and the building’s ATM was damaged, but at the Turf Bar, the burglars were unable to get inside. The two men are facing charges of burglary, attempted burglary and receiving stolen goods, and Detective Sergeant Damon Wells said further charges are likely and investigations are continuing. The men are also being investigated for involvement with nine other burglaries at petrol stations and dairies across Canterbury between January 26 and February 28. Police said they believe the incidents in Dunsandel, Fairlie, Geraldine, Cave, Hororata, Glentunnel, Leeston and Mt Somers to be linked and targeted. A stolen ute was used in several of the incidents, and CCTV footage taken at the locations shows four “heavily disguised” men. Anyone with information on burglaries or suspicious behaviour in Canterbury is encouraged to contact local police or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

■ TWO BODIES FOUND

Missing actress one of two found dead in house Police have confirmed the names of the bodies who were found in Dryden Lodge. They were missing Auckland woman Tania Ellwood, 39, and Timothy Kerr Hamilton, 36, also of Auckland. Police say the pair were known to each other and that they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter. However, the police investigation would be ongoing and police would still like to hear from anyone who may have seen or had contact with Ellwood or Hamilton after 11am on February 28. The matter would be referred to the coroner at the end of the investigation. Police were called to Dryden Lodge, which operates as a halfway house for many tenants with drug and alcohol problems, at 3.15pm on Tuesday. Upon arrival, police found two people dead. The downstairs level of the Grey Lynn property had been partially cordoned off. Inside the cordon were single bedrooms and a kitchen, resident James Davidson said. Davidson has lived in the lodge for two years. He said he woke from an afternoon nap on Tuesday to find police everywhere. He did not know the people

Tania Ellwood, one of two bodies found in an Auckland halfway house. who had died but said a lot of the lodge residents had alcohol and drug issues. A room at the lodge costs between $200 and $400 a week, Davidson said. The discovery of the bodies followed a police appeal to the public on Tuesday morning to help find Ellwood saying they were concerned for her safety. Ellwood was last seen in Newmarket about 9.30am on February 28. She had last been in contact

with family the night before at 6pm on and it was said to be out of character for her not to be in contact. A family member posted to Facebook on Tuesday saying: “We love you Tania and we will find you.” Ellwood is listed on StarNow as being an actor, hairstylist, makeup artist and fashion stylist. She had a brief stint on Shortland Street where she played a character called Mandy Timmins. - NZME

One-punch Kiwi jailed over six years for killing A New Zealand teenager who killed a grandfather in a onepunch attack outside a Gold Coast pub after a Six60 gig has been jailed for six-and-a-half years. In his first week in the country, Former Rotorua Boys’ High School Tristan Mataora Heather went drinking with his aunt and uncle at the Coolangatta Hotel to celebrate his recent 18th birthday. During the night he drank about 20 beers and left when the pub closed. In the early hours of December 4, 2015 he punched a man and later turned on Trevor Duroux, who was in a scuffle with a workmate. With a right hook he knocked Duroux to the ground, causing him to smash his head on the road. The beloved grandfather ended up in intensive care with serious head injuries. Ten days later, his family decided to turn off his life support.

Heather was yesterday sentenced to six years and six months in jail by Brisbane Supreme Court Justice James Douglas who described it as a “tragic case”. Statements from three of Mr Duroux’s children were read to the court, with all hoping justice would be served on their father’s killer. His son, Trevor French, told the court about when he was told to travel to the Gold Coast as soon as possible. “After losing my mother at a young age life was already difficult for me and my family,” he wrote. In sentencing the 20-year-old, Justice Douglas found he was remorseful but said there was a strong need to deter others from alcohol-fuelled violence. Under Queensland’s new onepunch laws, Heather won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 80 per cent of his head sentence. It’s likely he will be deported when released from prison. - NZME

Russian ex-spy poisoned A Russian ex-spy and his daughter fighting for their lives in an English hospital were attacked with a nerve agent in a targeted murder attempt, British police said yesterday. The case has further strained relations between Russia and Britain, which has said it will respond strongly if the Russian government is linked to the attack. It has overtones of a 2006 fatal attack on a former Russian spy that was blamed on the Kremlin. In that incident, a radioactive poison was used. The choice of a nerve agent in the latest case follows the use of the banned nerve agent VX to kill the estranged half-brother of North Korea’s leader last year. Sergei Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia were found unconscious on a bench in the southwestern English city of Salisbury on Sunday, triggering a police investigation led by counterterrorism detectives. Baffled police initially said the pair had come into contact with an unknown substance. “Having established that a nerve agent is the cause of the symptoms leading us to treat this as attempted murder, I

The first trailer for Disney’s forthcoming Christopher Robin film has been released, and shows British talent Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell set against the muted tones of a quintessentially English post-War London. Viewers have, however, been beguiled by Winnie-thePooh, who returns in the film to help his childhood friend Christopher deal with the challenges of office life. For there is a noticeable trans-Atlantic twang in Pooh’s voice: the bear has an American accent. Already, people have been reacting to the accent, one posting: Why the Hell does Winnie the Pooh have a bloody American accent?

Porn actress to sue

Govt troops split rebel-held enclave

An adult film actress who has said she had sex with Donald Trump filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement and “set the record straight,” her lawyer said yesterday. Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court. She alleges that the agreement she signed days before the 2016 presidential election, which prevented her from discussing the alleged sexual encounters, is “null and void and of no consequence” because Trump didn’t personally sign it. Her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said she wants “to set the record straight”.

Syrian government forces seized vast swaths of territory including farmland in the opposition-held suburbs of Damascus yesterday, effectively dividing the besieged enclave in two and further squeezing rebels and tens of thousands of civilians trapped inside, state media and a war monitor reported. The government, determined to wrest the eastern Ghouta suburbs from the control of rebels after seven years of war, has resorted to extreme levels of shelling and bombardment to clear the way for its troops to advance on the ground. Hundreds have been killed in the past two weeks. Doctors and residents reported intense shelling and

cases of suffocation and difficulty breathing, accusing the government of using chlorine gas. Hamza Hassan, a surgeon working at one of the hospitals in eastern Ghouta, said that staff were overwhelmed with chlorine odour and that he had treated 29 children with difficulties breathing. Such reports, which have been recurrent in the past weeks, could not be independently confirmed. The government has repeatedly denied using chlorine gas. Earlier, the state-affiliated al-Ikhbariya TV station broadcast live shots from the region, showing dense columns of smoke rising above the town as explosions and rockets could be heard. - AP

The Bachelor takes heat

■ UNITED STATES

Amazon promises fix for creepy Alexa laugh Amazon’s Alexa has been letting out an unprompted, creepy cackle – startling users of the best-selling voice assistant. The laugh, described by some as “witch-like” was reported to sometimes happen without the device being “woken” up. Others reported the laugh

occurring when they asked Alexa to perform a different task, such as playing music. “We’re aware of this and working to fix it,” Amazon said. Voice assistants like Alexa are designed to respond or act only when prompted with a wake word, which in this case is “Alexa” or “Amazon”. But this apparent glitch is

happening without any prior interaction, spooking Alexa owners. The use of voice assistants in the home is often met with caution due to their nature – voice commands are recorded and sent to the cloud for processing, a system that stokes a fear of eavesdropping, unintended or otherwise.

Incidents like this, where an assistant seems to rebel against its owner, naturally further this concern. That said, most users on social media have reacted with humour, drawing parallels with HAL 9000 from the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. “I’m sorry, Dave,” the machine famously said. “I’m afraid I can’t do that.” - BBC

ABC’s The Bachelor says he’s willing to take the heat for dumping Becca Kufrin to find true love with runner-up Lauren Burnham. “Would I do it all again and face this scrutiny to be with her? Absolutely,” Arie Luyendyk Jr. said. His decision to break up with Kufrin during the season finale after he’d proposed drew headlines including the words “horror,” ‘’brutal” and “gut-wrenching.” Luyendyk defended the spectacle of ending their engagement on network TV. “I wanted everyone to know that the breakup was on me and that I made a mistake,” he said.

Selling a family trust property –

What you need to know

If you don’t approach it in the right way, selling a property that’s part of a trust can get extremely complicated. If you’re looking to do this in the future, it’s a good idea to get a handle on the process before you start. Each trust is different and operates on the conditions set out in the trust deed. So the first thing you should do is talk to the trust’s lawyer – ideally the one who was involved in setting up the trust to start with – as they will have a good understanding of your family’s particular circumstances. They will be able to check the terms of the trust to ensure whether or not its assets can be sold (in some trusts, assets are protected from sale). You should check that the trust has an IRD number as you will need one to sell the property. There may also be tax implications if you sell the property – this depends on when it was purchased and whether it is the main family home. You should check any tax implications with an accountant. If the property can be sold, all the trustees must agree on this course of action. The lawyer will draw up a resolution that documents the decision to sell the property and this must be signed by all the trustees. Once this process is in train you can start thinking about how to sell the property. If you are considering selling privately, be aware that you will need to have it assessed by a registered valuer (this is a requirement of the Trustee Act). While selling privately can save you money on commission, selling a property can be complex and you need to understand the risks involved. If you decide to use a real estate agent to sell the property, make sure all the trustees are in agreement about which agent you choose. If it’s logistically or practically difficult for all of you to be involved, it’s a good idea to nominate one or two trustees to be in control of the process. Ensure they document all conversations and decisions so you have records to refer back to later. Again, don’t be shy about asking your lawyer for advice. Being a trustee means you have to meet a number of legal obligations. For example, if you allowed the trust property or other assets to be sold at a very low price, you could be liable for breaching your duty of diligence and prudence. Even if all the trustees are not involved in selecting the real estate agent and discussing the method of sale and marketing for the property, all of you must sign the agency agreement to list the property. This is the contract between the trust and the real estate agent that sets out how the property will be marketed for sale and what the commission will be if it is successfully sold.

Again, the signing of this must be documented in trustee resolutions. While this may seem like a lot of bothersome admin, you need to follow the exact rules of your trust in case something goes wrong later. When the property is sold – again, when all trustees are happy with the price and conditions – all the trustees must sign the sale and purchase agreement. The buyer’s deposit will be held in a lawyer’s or real estate agent’s trust account. After settlement, the trust’s assets register should be updated to reflect the sale. Once you have signed a sale and purchase agreement and settlement has occurred, you need your lawyer or

conveyancer to hold the sale proceeds (less any fees) in the family trust’s bank account. The proceeds from the sale will remain in the family trust account until they are distributed in accordance with the trust deed. Selling a family property with multiple trustees can be a trying time on many different levels and people don’t always act as you might hope or expect. A bit of planning, preparation and sound legal advice will help you navigate any choppy waters. For independent advice on buying or selling property, check out settled.govt.nz

Hilux gets attitude injection

T

oyota Hilux will ramp up its attitude with the introduction of the SR5 Cruiser variant, which sits above the SR5 and replaces the current SR5 Limited. It has a bold new look with its black hexagonal upper grille, revised front bumper design and heavily revised LED fog lights. “The new look adds an aggresive attitude to the long-standing Hilux attributes of being tough and unbreakable,” said Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of new vehicle sales and product. “SR5 Cruiser makes a bold statement with a more robust exterior look, first class safety, enhanced interior styling and the built-in strength that makes Hilux the first choice for customers who want a ute that looks good but can perform in a demanding environment.” The Hilux SR5 Cruiser will be available as a double cab in 2WD PreRunner and 4WD configurations, a sixspeed automatic transmission. 18-inch gloss metallic black alloy wheels with 265/60 tyres make the Hilux SR5 Cruiser stand out and are complemented by black door mirrors, door handles, and a new black rear bumper. SR5 Cruiser body graphics are also included. The interior carries on the bold new look with black perforated, leather-accented upholstery used throughout, with the colour is continued on into the pillars and roof lining. Drivers and front passengers get added comfort through the addition of front seat heaters. The SR5 Cruiser has a new instrument cluster with a revised tachometer and speedometer offset with piano black ornamentation to replace the silver highlights of the outgoing SR5 Limited. The 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel motor, with 130 kW and 450 Nm of torque from 1600rpm-2400rpm, popowers the SR5 Cruiser.

he long-awaited, eagerly anticipated next iteration of an automotive icon is now on the road in New Zealand – the all-new Holden Commodore. “This new model, the fifth generation to wear the famous Commodore nomenclature, sets a new level for a world-class motoring experience,” said Marnie Samphier, General Manager Marketing at Holden New Zealand. “The brief to GM’s designers and engineers was simple: create a beautiful car that gives us major enhancements in fuel economy, safety, functionality and technology. They responded and the result is the most advanced Commodore – ever. “It represents an incredibly

positive step-change which delivers over and above from what is usually expected from a new model. “All round performance and driving dynamics, combined with the level of tech-spec and creature comforts, stand this new car head and shoulders above the competition. “The driving experience is simply phenomenal and this exciting new model has every right to be a proud new addition to the Commodore family.” Commodore is now available in three different bodystyles – Liftback, Sportwagon and Tourer – and now offers a level of technology and drivetrain combinations which will challenge perceptions of the car. New model highlights include a powerful V6 engine mated with a

nine-speed transmission, autonomous emergency braking, heated and ventilated massage seats, a 360-degree camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, dual panel panorama sunroof and head-up display, as well as a frugal diesel engine option which cuts fuel consumption by a third compared to the equivalent previous petrol model. The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from $45,990 – which is $4000 less compared with the entry model it is replacing – and not only offers the most powerful base specification engine ever in a Commodore, but also introduces luxury features at mainstream prices. And every new Commodore comes with Holden Complete Care three-years free certified service.

The best of both worlds P olestar, the new electric performance brand, has introduced the Polestar 1 to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The European debut follows its global media reveal in Shanghai, China, in late 2017. “This is the public launch of the new Polestar 1, and our new electric performance brand. “Electromobility is the main focus of today’s automotive industry, and Polestar is at the centre of this development, introducing world-class electrified cars and groundbreaking, customer-focused services and offers,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar. “To date, we have received interest from over 6000 potential customers wanting the Polestar 1 – a number which began gathering momentum from the moment the car was revealed. “With our current plans to produce 500 cars per year, it’s possible that we have exceeded our production potential in these early stages. This positive reception to Polestar 1 really encourages us that our ‘Pure, Progressive, Performance’ brand proposition resonates very well with customers.” Polestar will open pre-orders for the Polestar 1 on March 13 with a request to the list of potential customers to pay a fully-refundable deposit of 2500. Pre-orders will open in the six initial launch markets announced in January, including China, the United States, Sweden, Germany, Norway and the Nether-

lands. An additional 12 new markets for Polestar 1 have been added and will open for pre-orders simultaneously, including Switzerland, the UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Portugal and Canada. “We will open pre-ordering of the Polestar 1 to eighteen markets which covers around 95 per cent of the geographical interest from potential Polestar 1 customers,” continued Thomas Ingenlath. “The deposit acts as a placeholder in the Polestar 1 queue and we are excited to see how the initial response translates into pre-orders.” The Polestar consumer experience is based on a new subscription model, where customers will be able to subscribe to their Polestar car for two or three years. Linked to a host of

connected and on-demand benefits like pick-up and delivery servicing, the nodeposit, all-inclusive subscription model has been designed to take the traditional hassle out of vehicle ownership with one monthly fee that includes insurance and maintenance, and allows the customer to focus on the enjoyment of driving. Customers will also be able to purchase the Polestar 1 outright if desired. The Geneva Motor Show also marks the start of a world tour for the Polestar 1. Other regional reveal events are planned in China, the United States and elsewhere in Europe.

The Polestar 1 is an Electric Performance Hybrid 2+2 GT coupé which produces 600 horsepower and 1000 Nm of torque, as well as 150km of pure electric driving range – the longest of any hybrid car in the world. The Electric Performance Hybrid powertrain features an internal combustion engine powering the front wheels, while a double electric rear axle drive system powers the rear wheels from a total of 34 kWh of battery power. In combination, the Polestar 1 is an electric vehicle with the benefits of an internal combustion engine to supplement the electric drive over long distances when required.

I

t was a wonderful way to spend a morning. It started out with a chance to meet members of the Veteran Car Club who were in Ashburton during their Mid-Summer Adventure. Chris and Rosemary Dyer from Rangiora said the Club had ventured into Mid Canterbury before and were keen to come back because of our great roads and scenery. To classify for Veteran status vehicles must have been built prior to 1918, which of course means that by the end of this year the youngest Veteran vehicle will be 100 years old. Many of the vehicles on the Mid-Summer Adventure were much older than that, including the Stephens family Ford Model T which is thought to be Bernard Egan one of the first thousand MOTORING examples built. It like all the Veterans on the rally are being carefully preserved and looked after by their owners. It was wonderful to talk with the enthusiasts who brought these very special vehicles to town and great to hear these machines running. And if that wasn’t enough of a treat there was another in store after the Veterans departed. Members of the Chrysler R/T 6 Pack Owners Club had their vehicles and some similar Chryslers on display in town. Like the Veteran Club they had decided to base a weekend run here and it was obvious they liked what they were able to see and do. From a later era then the cars seen earlier they were a reminder of Chrysler’s very successful foray in muscle car production in the 1970s. The Veterans and the Chryslers could hardly have been more different but they also had one very special thing in common. Like the Veterans the Chryslers are quite understandably the pride and joy of their owners. Two great car displays. One great way to spend a morning.

Pictured are some of the Veteran and Chrysler enthusiasts who had their prized vehicles on show.

Landys and Rovers

A fascinating fact

his year Landrover enthusiasts are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the iconic vehicle they are proud of. The Association of Rover Car Clubs are planning a very special event based over several days later this month in Methven to celebrate Landrover’s birthday. It will incorporate Rover cars as well. Some rather rare and special examples will be here. The club has an interesting and full programme of events planned during which we’ll see some fabulous vehicle around Mid Canterbury. There will also be an opportunity for the public to see the vehicles at a display in the Methven Showgrounds on Sunday March 25.

t the time this is being written the writer is also preparing notes for a talk to one of our local Rotary Clubs. Something to look forward. For the writer! Hopefully the Rotarians will have similar thoughts afterwards. This writer is anticipating the audience may include his former history teacher Brian Edmondston. Brian made history fun. Hence the writer thought it would be good to include a bit of motoring history so he referred back to a story about the car which transported the Archduke Franz Fer-

T

A

dinand around Sarajevo back in 1914. He and his wife were assassinated in the car and that led to the outbreak of World War One. The car was a Graf and Stift. Double checking this to make certain correct historical facts will be presented in the presence of a highly respected history teacher led to an amazing and rather ironic discovery. The number plate of that famous car which is now on display in restored condition, in a German museum was A111118. Those numbers could also signify a famous event and date, the Armistice which ended the horrific confrontation took effect on 11-11-18!

OUR VIEW

Puzzling case of the pilfered pumpkin I

t’s the kind of scene you’d expect to find in a picture book for children yet here it is unfolding right before our very eyes in little old Ashburton. A potentially prize-winning pumpkin, growing gleefully outside the town’s cinema – snatched unexpectedly from its own grasp and taken, presumably not to pastures green. As though straight from the pages of an Enid Blyton novel, the real twist in this tale of whodunnit is that the pumpkin belongs to our town’s mayor and her husband. A cruel act of vandalism, or an anti-political stance gone sour? You choose the plot. Residents of this district have been dealing with a crime-spree

of sorts over the past few weeks and while it’s never nice to make light of a situation such as this perhaps this latest incident in a long line of them is not so much the icing on the cake, but more so the filling in the pie. The People’s Pumpkin Project – yes, that’s the name of the competition run by Environment Canterbury – was set to be judged in May after competitors received their seedlings

back in November. A plan to conquer the divide between urban and rural dwelling and enhance the chance of building trust and working together as well as tackling the sensitive issue of farm water management. Instead of the urban and rural divide, it would appear this is a case of urban versus urban. What this tale does underline, once again, is the problem of brazen disregard for other people’s property in this district at the moment. Daily we continue to see reports of break-ins, intentional damage and theft from all corners and although some of the perpetrators are caught and put through the judicial process we

are still seeing a continuation of such events. Our police are stretched to the maximum, but the sound of sirens late into the night as they chase down those offending should help residents feel a little more at ease that the challenge is being met with full force. Unfortunately, for our story, reports filtered through yesterday there were remnants of what appears to be a pumpkin discovered not far from the scene of the crime. One can only assume that this means there will be no fairy-tale type ending to this intriguing tale. Then again, every good story has an unexpected moment. That one catch that you never

to hand him a second term. Five years ago: Egyptian soccer fans rampaged through the heart of Cairo, furious about the acquittal of seven police officers while death sentences against 21 alleged rioters were confirmed in a trial over a stadium melee that had left 74 people dead. One year ago: Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney urged Iraq and the world’s nations not to let the Islamic State extremist group “get away with genocide,” telling a UN meeting that what was “shocking” was

not just the group’s brutality but the “passive” response by the world’s nations. Today’s birthdays: Former Sen. James L. Buckley, ConservativeN.Y., is 95. Singer Lloyd Price is 85. Actress Joyce Van Patten is 84. Country singer Mickey Gilley is 82. Actress Trish Van Devere is 77. Singer-musician John Cale (The Velvet Underground) is 76. Fadden (The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) is 70. Actress Jaime Lyn Bauer is 69. Actress Linda Fiorentino is 60. Actor Tom Amandes is 59. Actor-director Lonny Price is 59. actually saw coming. Just when you think there’s no hope at all, the subject usually rises from the ashes like a phoenix as though there was nothing wrong at all. We can only hope that in the case of this potentially glorious vegetable that there is a spectacular twist and the pumpkin is returned to its rightful owner and be somehow restored to its former glory before the crime took place. Perhaps, in this mysterious tale it will be when that very same pumpkin appears, gleefully unaware of its plight, growing once again outside the doors of the former i-SITE building? Now that would be a best seller, without doubt.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Friday, March 9, the 68th day of 2018. There are 297 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On March 9, 1862, during the Civil War, the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimac) clashed for five hours to a draw at Hampton Roads, Virginia. On this date: In 1661, Cardinal Jules Mazarin, the chief minister of France, died, leaving King Louis XIV in full control. In 1796, the future emperor of the French, Napoleon Bonaparte, married Josephine de Beauharnais. (The couple later divorced.) In 1916, more than 400 Mexican raiders led by Pancho Villa attacked Columbus, New Mexico, killing 18 Americans. During the First World War, Germany declared war on Portugal. In 1918, writer Mickey Spillane, famous for his pulp detective novels, was born Frank Morrison Spillane in Brooklyn, New York. In 1945, during World War Two, US B-29 bombers began launching incendiary bomb attacks against Tokyo, resulting in an estimated 100,000 deaths. In 1977, about a dozen armed Hanafi Muslims invaded three buildings in Washington, DC, killing one person and taking more than 130 hostages. (The siege ended two days later.) In 1997, gangsta rapper The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) was killed in a stillunsolved drive-by shooting in Los Angeles; he was 24. Ten years ago: Highway and utility crews worked overtime to recover from a huge storm that buried Ohio and other parts of the Midwest in snow and tore down power lines elsewhere. Spain’s Socialist prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, won re-election as voters dismissed worries about a slumping economy, immigration and resurgent Basque militants

Annual duck race such a fun affair W

hat is it about the Duck Race that makes it such a successful and fun

event? Is it the competitive nature of event? Is it all about the prizes? Yes and no. We all like to be winners and yes we all want to win a new 55-inch telly but I think it’s a combination of several factors that make the night a success. First and most importantly is the hosts. I’m not talking about the venue, although obviously the fact that the creek runs through Robbie’s is a huge bonus. I’m talking about Skip and Amanda. Amanda makes sure everything ticks along as it should inside on their busiest night of the year and Skip makes the night outside. Whether he’s wandering

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

around the crowd having a yarn to people or splashing around at the finish line collecting up the winning ducks, he’s always got THAT grin on his dial. His speech after the prizegiving is always … um …. interesting. It is clearly very important to stay hydrated while duck collecting, but this doesn’t necessarily equate to a free flowing thank you speech at the conclusion of the event. John for helping Skip get all his ducks in a row at the finish line, great job! Craig Harrison’s commentat-

ing and auctioneering skills also add heaps to the night. He does a fantastic job of calling the race under trying circumstances. The duck numbers are very hard to read as they bob along the course and of course there’s not many commentators around the world who have to be careful they don’t FALL into the course while commentating. Sandy, John, Damien and the ACL team who make sure there is enough water flowing down the creek. Without them we would probably still be waiting for the first heat to finish now. All the wonderful sponsors who fork out $70 to own a duck (before it’s passed on to a listener on the radio). Without you all our prize table would look pretty grim. Carol and Mel from Hokonui do all the sponsor chasing, prize collecting and box ticking on the night.

Without them, the night wouldn’t happen, simple as that! Of course the night wouldn’t be what it is without the crowd who turn up on the night, the ones who have been lucky enough to win a duck and that’s not an easy thing to do. I see people setting their redials from 4.30am when the ducks are quacking on air. It’s a real team effort! And now that I have fully recovered from the event (bird flu). I am looking forward to next year’s event! We are already thinking and planning improvements to the event now. Bring it on. Till next week. Hoo Roo Phill Hooper, Duck Race Fan. ■ WOMEN IN BUSINESS

In brief

Numbers ‘horrific’ The proportion of women in top jobs at New Zealand companies has sunk to the lowest point since at least 2004, according to new research released yesterday. One senior Kiwi executive, Xero’s Anna Curzon, said the results were “horrific”. Women made up only 18 per cent of senior management teams at companies surveyed by professional services firm Grant Thornton. That is 2 per cent down on last year and the worst result since the firm began the survey in 2004. Released on International Women’s Day, Grant Thornton said it showed this country had taken “two firm steps back”. Among the 35 nations which take part in the research, New Zealand came in at 33 – ahead of only Australia and Japan. Globally, women made up 24 per cent of

senior management teams. While the vast majority of Kiwi Grant Thornton partner Stacey companies had adopted equal pay Davies said the local results were disrules and policies against discrimiappointing and had been slipping nation when recruiting, Davis said since 2015. these didn’t drive change by themselves. “I was hoping in some ways that it Xero’s Curzon said the problem was a blip and we’d see some positive was a “GDP issue”. change but we now really do have “If I was in Treasury, if I was the this four year average of 19 per cent Minister of Finance, I’d be crewhich is pretty much showing that ating action plans. A leaked email has revealed that Apple is making major changes to iTunes. The source claims the Cupertino-based company will stop taking new iTunes LP submissions as of this month. Launched on iTunes in 2009, LPs (long plays) were a way for users to buy their albums with additional elements such as bonus tracks and videos. - NZME

Keeping women awake Kiwi women are more likely to be kept awake at night by money worries than men, and yet fewer women are willing to learn about how to get their finances sorted. Research done by credit-rating agency Credit Simple found that 41 per cent of women said that financial woes stopped them from sleeping, compared to 35 per cent of men. - NZME

Trade in the spotlight T he rollercoaster ride has continued for investors this week, as trade becomes a key topic of conversation. Geo-political uncertainty remains front of mind for investors while the end of the local reporting season means there has been little to drive markets closer to home. US President Donald Trump’s proposed trade tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the US sent markets into a spin this week. Investors feared that this could be the start of a trade war or the first of other protectionist policy announcements. Adding to the cautionary stance was the resignation of the US Chief Economic Advisor Gary Cohn. It is rumoured that Cohn has resigned over the proposed trade policies as he is a free trade advocate and disagrees with the President’s moves to implement protectionist policy. Cohn has been a strong supporter of the business friendly initiatives that have been implemented so far during Trump’s tenure and was a key driver of the tax changes, thus his departure is seen as a blow to big business in the US. Political uncertainty in Europe continues although to a lesser extent now that Germany has been able to form a government six months after its election. The breakthrough came early this week, after members of the Social Democrat (SPD) party voted in favour of forming a coalition with Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union Party. This will be Merkel’s fourth term as Chancellor and should she complete the four years, she will equal Helmut Kohl’s record setting term. The Italian election has been on our watchlist for some time now, as the populist movement in the nation gains in popularity. Italy is a hot spot for discontent with the European Union, and this sentiment saw the Eurosceptic, anti-establishment and antiimmigration parties garner more than 50 per cent of the votes. Interestingly, voter turnout for the election was very low at 73 per cent despite the hotly contested issues. No party received enough votes to form a government, with the Five Star Movement getting the highest percentage, with 33 per cent of the vote. The Centre-right coalition has 37 per cent of the vote, and there is talks that they will approach President Sergio Mattarella to form a government, which could see Matteo Salvini

made Prime Minister. In Italy, to form a government a party or coalition needs to have 40 per cent of the vote. Either of these parties coming to power will likely see a large amount of pressure placed on the European Union so we will continue to watch the situation closely. The latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw its second decline in a row, slipping 0.6 per cent. The key driver behind the decline was the fall in the price of whole milk powder, down 0.8 per cent. Of note was the strong rise in skim milk powder, up 5.5 per cent. Fonterra’s forecast farmgate milk price for the current season remains at $6.40 and this is largely in line with the Agri HQ estimate. The Reserve Bank of Australia met this week, and kept prices on hold for the 19th meeting in a row at 1.50 per cent. The central bank acknowledged that global growth is picking up and expects the Australian economy to grow faster in 2018 than it did last year. It also expects inflation to remain low but sees it picking up as the labour market continues to tighten and the economy continues to strengthen, albeit gradually. The RBA judged that it would keep monetary policy loose to support further economic progress. Fourth quarter GDP from Australia was released later in the week and came in below expectations. For the December quarter, growth slowed to 0.4 per cent from 0.7 per cent in the September quarter. This was below expectations for 0.6 per cent growth. The annualised growth rate for 2017 was 2.4 per cent, and was also below expectations. Jeremy Flood works for Craigs Investment Partners. This article should not be deemed as advice. In brief

■ ELLERSLIE

Tiley serious about Sydney Melt’s unbeaten record isn’t all that’s going on the line at Ellerslie tomorrow. The precocious daughter of Iffraaj will attempt to stretch her winning sequence to three in the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) and Sydney beckons if she can successfully complete her hat-trick. “If she won and was reasonably dominant, and came through it well, that’s a serious option,” trainer Nigel Tiley said. “I’ve nominated her for the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick, it’s a $1 million race and that would be the last run of her campaign.” Melt won the Listed Ashford Lodge Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe on debut before she claimed the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. She was then given a break and returned for a quiet trial over 1000m at Avondale last month. “I’m very happy with her, she’s spot on,” Tiley said. “Everything has gone well and her bodyweight is right where I want it to be.” He also can’t fault the condition of Brighton, who runs in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m). “He’s never been better, his work this week has been the best it’s ever been,” Tiley said. “He’s run in four Group One

Arden Rooney retired New Zealand and Hunter Cup winner Arden Rooney has been retired. Another setback with a tendon injury which has plagued him for two years was enough for owner Merv Butterworth to retire the great stayer. “After two years of operations, intensive rehabilitation and TLC, we came to the realisation that once we got him 99 per cent, he may have injured his tendon again,” Butterworth said. “He is now at home where he will be loved and well cared for.” - HRNZ

Plum ride for Parkes Johnathan Parkes will ride in-form Hamilton filly Contessa Vanessa in Saturday week’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham. Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson confirmed Parkes would take over from Chris Johnson, who was aboard for last Saturday’s Sunline Vase (2100m) win at Ellerslie, but has plumped for last-start Gr.3 Lowland Stakes (2100m) winner Savvy Coup for the Oaks. Contessa Vanessa has won five of her 17 starts. - NZME

races and apart from the Derby, when distance-wise it was a step too far, he’s gone very good races. “He went a slashing race when he was fourth in the Guineas at Christchurch, he got home really

him, but he deserves his chance. “He just needs the speed on.” Brighton was a winner over a mile at Pukekohe two runs back and then finished fourth in the Taranaki Cup (1800m). - NZME

Features beckon for Lizzie L’Amour A start in one of the showpiece races of Sydney’s The Championships awaits Lizzie L’Amour if she races up to expectations in Saturday’s Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie. But just which showpiece event that is hasn’t yet been decided, with Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman covering their bases with entries for the Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 7 and both the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and the Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at the same track a week later. TAB bookmakers have installed Zabeel five-year-old Lizzie L’Amour as a prohibitive $2 favourite for tomorrow’s weightfor-age feature, in which she defends her title after her half-head win over Benzini last year, again with Matt Cameron in the saddle. She added her second Group One win with success in last month’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa and has given her trainers no cause for concern since. “She’s going well, but I just hope the track isn’t too hard for her because there’s been no rain,” Baker said. “I am happy with her. She seems a happy horse and she’s fit.” Ellerslie was rated a good 2 earlier this week and track staff applied 10mm of irrigation on Thursday

Lizzie L’Amour can make her presence felt in Sydney’s staying races, according to trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

after only 1mm of rain arrived, despite a forecast predicting several wet days leading into Saturday’s Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) meeting. Baker said the Lorna and Gary Moore-raced Lizzie L’Amour’s Sydney programme would depend on how she ran on Saturday.

“She’s in the Sydney Cup and she can stay. She’s won her only start at 2400m,” Baker said. “She’s probably at her best at 2000m but we think she can stay well.” Lizzie L’Amour has been allotted 53kg in the Sydney Cup and 52.5kg in the Doncaster.

Race rival and stablemate Nicoletta also holds an entry for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and for the Gr.1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (formerly the Queen of the Turf, 1600m) at Randwick the same day. The Savabeel four-year-old placed in the Herbie Dyke Stakes and has since finished fourth in the Listed Kaimai Stakes (2000m) at Matamata. “She’s an improving horse. “We are happy with the way she’s going and we think she can figure in Saturday’s race,” Baker said. Rounding out the stable’s hand in the New Zealand Stakes is last-start Ellerslie winner Saint Emilion, who has twice finished fourth in Group One weight-forage company and won the Gr.3 OMF Stakes (2000m) under the weight-for-age conditions at Ellerslie last November. “He’s won four of his 10 starts at Ellerslie and though he’s secondup, he’s pretty fit,” Baker said. “He’s betwixt and between with weight-for-age racing because under handicaps he gets too much weight and at weightfor-age, he’s up against the top ones.” Leith Innes rides Saint Emilion, who is on the third line of betting at $7.50, while Opie Bosson will be taking the ride on $12 shot Nicoletta. - NZME

A gallant third placing in last Saturday’s Gr.2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) has earned talented Cambridge mare Francaletta a shot at the Gr.1 Coolmore Classic (1500m). Trainer Murray Baker said Francaletta had come through the race in excellent order and she was pressing on to Saturday week’s Rosehill fillies and mares’ feature. “She’s really improved so she’ll run next week in the Coolmore.” Bred by Raffles Dancers and raced by Lib Petagna, the High Chaparral five-year-old has won six of her 10 starts in New Zealand. - NZME

Cup goal for Kiwi stayer Champion trainer Chris Waller has set the well-performed New Zealand stayer Patrick Erin on a path toward the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 14. He has taken charge of the Gallant Guru gelding, who hasn’t raced since he finished fourth in the Wellington Cup for Wingatui horsemen Brian and Shane Anderton. Patrick Erin will make his first appearance for Waller in Saturday’s Listed Randwick City Stakes with Hugh Bowman taking the ride. - NZME

Time called on sprinter Multiple Group One winner Sacred Star has run his last race. The eightyear-old son of Flying Spur has been retired and will now enjoy a show hunter/sport horse role with Paxton Condor. Sacred Star won nine races and more than $780,000 from Tony Pike’s Cambridge stable with his career highlights being Group One successes in the Telegraph and the NRM Sprint. - NZME

Exceeding expectations She’s Not Bad provided her connections with a pleasant surprise at Avondale. The daughter of He’s Remarkable made a perfect start to her career on Wednesday with a maiden success over 1400m. “She’s a bit hard to get a line on. While her work had been encouraging, we probably didn’t expect her to come out and perform quite as well as that,” said Jamie Richards, who trains the three-year-old. - NZME

In brief Braced for Stormers Aaron Mauger admits last week’s bye was ‘’not ideal’’, although he has confidence in the Highlanders’ preparation for their Super Rugby clash tonight. The team is expecting a physical encounter against the Stormers at Forsyth Barr. Indeed, the Stormers should, theoretically, be more battle-hardened than their hosts. However, Mauger was not expecting his team to be underdone. “We try to train at the intensity we want to play at anyway. “We’ve still had some really quality trainings so I’m sure that’ll hold us in good stead.” - ODT

Pocock eyes return Wallabies star David Pocock is on track for a Super Rugby comeback in the Brumbies’ Australian derby against the Waratahs on March 31. Pocock’s return from a 12-month sabbatical was put on hold after having knee surgery in January to repair damage to his meniscus. The 29-year-old is back training with the Brumbies squad, putting himself in the frame for the roundseven clash in Canberra. - AAP

■ WATERSKIING

Medals galore on the water Lake Hood waterskiers have returned from the trans-Tasman Oz-Kiwi test with medals and a heap of personal bests. Emily Milner had the best result, with silver medals in the slalom, tricks and jump and earning the overall gold for her under 14 girls’ grade.

Milner was also part of the Kiwi team that beat the Australians in their age group match-up. The four-day event was held in Wanganui, on Lake Wiritoa. Milner’s second jump of 27.6 metres was a personal best and equalled a New Zealand junior record.

It was then broken by teammate Alex Brown who jumped 28.8m. George Donaldson was the top Kiwi slalomer while brother George won bronze overall in the under 21 grade, with a silver in tricks. Josh Hood said he was was

stoked to jump a personal best of 39.8m, while Diaz McKay slalomed into 13m for the first time in competition. The Donaldsons, and sister Lana, now head to Melbourne for the Moomba Nautique 200 waterski festival, which features athletes from 19 countries.

Barrett brings up a big milestone

Beauden Barrett

Growing up in Taranaki, a young Beauden Barrett aspired to one day pull on the black and yellow of the Hurricanes. In 2011, he was given his chance and has been a staple of the side since. Now, this weekend when the side hosts the Crusaders, Barrett will become the 12th player to notch up 100 games for the club. “Growing up I remember Dad playing for the club so it was always a dream to play a game for the Hurricanes and for it to be my hundredth this weekend is very special,” Barrett said. “I’m not going to let the occasion interfere with what we’re there to do … I want to focus on what I’m there to do and that’s to play well for the team.” Barrett will bring up his 100th game for the franchise alongside brother Jordie, who will start at fullback again for the side in his second game back from injury. It’ll be a family affair in the match, with their brother Scott lining up for the Crusaders. It’ll be a memorable night for prop Ben May as well, as he brings up his 100th Super Rugby match – playing with the Chiefs and Crusaders before donning the Hurricanes jersey.

“It is a big achievement coming from a little town called Murchison. It’s just a dream to play this level of footy,” May said. After two mediocre performances to start the season, the Hurricanes return to home soil with a big challenge on their hands. The defending champion Crusaders have started the season where they left off, with back-to-back wins. While sides tend to lift on their home turf, May said the Hurricanes know they needed to lift their game considerably if they are to match up to the Crusaders. “We probably haven’t played our best footy yet, so it’s a big challenge ahead.” Coach Chris Boyd has named an unchanged starting 15 for the match, with four changes to the bench. After playing for the team’s under-20 squad last weekend, two-test All Blacks hooker Asafo Aumua replaces James O’Reilly, Ihaia West returns to replace Jackson Garden-Bachop and Richard Judd replaces Jamie Booth. The final change could see Marcel Renata make his Hurricanes debut as he comes into the side with young forward Alex Fidow out injured. - NZME

Wallabies centre Kurtley Beale is tipped to overcome a rib injury and play in NSW Waratahs’ Super Rugby clash against the Jaguares on Sunday. But the bad news is halfback Mitch Short has returned home after sustaining an ACL tear. Tahs forwards coach Simon Cron is confident Beale will be passed fit while also confirming uncontracted halfback Nick Duffy will now be Jake Gordon’s deputy. - AAP

Fiao’o makes the cover A female has appeared on the cover of the fabled Rugby Almanack for the first time. Retired Black Ferns captain Fiao’o Fa’amausili is pictured lifting the Women’s World Cup alongside New Zealand’s player of the year, Sam Whitelock. Never before has the Almanack given female rugby such prominent billing as there is also a record 82 pages devoted to the women’s game. The esteemed publication also names Black Ferns wing Portia Woodman as one of its five players of the year. - NZME

Wallabies want Eddie He might be contracted to England until 2021, but that won’t stop the Wallabies from keeping their eye on coach Eddie Jones. Current head coach Michael Cheika has indicated he will step down from his role if he does not lead the side to a World Cup title. Fox Sports reports Rugby Australia have already started scouting for his replacement. Jones has already had a stint at Australia’s helm from 2001-05 which included the 2003 World Cup, which they lost to England. - NZME

North back for Wales Wales coach Warren Gatland has opened the door on an earlierthan-expected return for star wing George North. North’s selection comes four days after he missed Northampton’s English Premiership game against Sale. The player was released by Wales as it was a Six Nations off week, but he did not play for Northampton reportedly because he had an arrangement that he would not play for the club on rest weekends. - PA

In brief Taylor ‘touch and go’ Ross Taylor won’t be risked for the Black Caps’ ODI series decider against England if it jeopardises his chances of playing in the subsequent test matches, coach Mike Hesson says. Taylor aggravated a thigh issue as he thumped his way to an unbeaten 181 in Wednesday’s ODI. Hesson said Taylor’s presence in the two tests against England would be prioritised over his participation on Saturday. No decision would be made before the end of today’s training session. - NZME

De Kock ban stands South Africa argued provocation and cited witnesses of David Warner’s sledging, but Quinton de Kock’s level-one charge for bringing cricket into disrepute has been upheld. De Kock fronted a hearing chaired by match referee Jeff Crowe in Port Elizabeth yesterday, having contested the charge resulting from an ugly staircase showdown with Warner during the first test. De Kock is understood to have admitted he made an unsavoury remark, but that he was provoked by a series of barbs from Australia’s vice-captain. - AAP Members of the Run and Walk Ashburton group along with their Timaru counterparts following the Hadlow to Harbour event last weekend in Timaru. ■ RUN, WALK

Ashburton to the fore Members of the Run and Walk Ashburton group have been busy recently and last weekend competed in the annual Hadlow to Harbour event in Timaru. Those taking part had the option of running, jogging or walking the full 10 kilometre course

or the shorter three kilometre course with all events finishing at Caroline Bay for the prizegiving. The Ashburton group made up a part of the 400 people who took part in the main event and didn’t go away empty-handed. As one of the first groups to

arrive, the Ashburton group put their gazebo up right at the end of the finishing chute and were recognised for their efforts – picking up a $100 voucher. Run and Walk Ashburton are actively pursuing new members to join their group, especially

over the winter months catering for anyone who wants to run, walk or jog. A 12 month membership costs $25 for adults and $5 for children with interested parties asked to reach out through the group’s Facebook page.

■ CYCLING

More pressure for beleaguered Team Sky The pressure on Team Sky intensified yesterday when the most powerful man in cycling demanded an investigation into the doping allegations that have been levelled against them. David Lappartient, the president of the UCI, gave an astonishing interview to the BBC, calling not just for the independent Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation to pursue the claims made in that damning UK parliamentary report but also calling for answers about the Jiffy bag delivered to Sir Bradley Wiggins. “I don’t think they want us know what was in that Jiffy bag,” said the Frenchman, who took charge of the world governing body last autumn. Lappartient said the report into doping in sport was hugely damaging for cycling, and suggested Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford needed to make a decision that was best for the sport in this country when it came to his own future.

In essence he appeared to be suggesting Brailsford should resign. He also said it would be “a disaster” for cycling if Chris Froome rode in this summer’s Tour de France if the case concerning his failed drugs test at last year’s Vuelta a Espana remains unresolved. Lappartient told the BBC that the finding of the parliamentary report – which he said he trusted because it was written by British MPs – that stated Wiggins had used a controversial corticosteroid for performance enhancement rather than medical need was ‘unacceptable’. “A mistake is something you have done without intention to be wrong,” said Lappartient. “The report is a bit different. “It seems it was a bit organised so maybe not a mistake but a fault which is different because that could affect the credibility globally of our sport. “When Team Sky was

launched, I remember ... they say, ‘We will be clean, we will win races and be clean, more white than white’. We can see in this report that it seems to be a bit different. “We have the Cycling AntiDoping Foundation, they have the power of investigation. I would like them to do this, to see if there is some violation of the rules.” A UCI doctor approved the three applications Wiggins made to use triamcinolone before the 2012 Tour he won and two other major races. And while the British cyclist insists it was to treat his asthma and allergy symptoms his own coach Shane Sutton has admitted his use of the drug was ‘unethical’. It seems possible, therefore, that any UCI investigation would examine the process by which Wiggins was given those medical exemptions in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“They had at the time the TUE agreement but now we have the evidence that it seems to be organised,” said Lappartient, adding that at the time the system was ‘a little bit simple’. By that he probably means only one UCI doctor was required to approve the certificates, compared to today when a panel of doctors reviews each case. On Wednesday Sutton said it was time for Wiggins and former Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman to ‘tell the truth’. A UK Anti-Doping investigation into The Daily Mail’s revelations about the Jiffy bag, delivered for Wiggins at the end of a race in the French Alps in 2011, was unsuccessful because of a lack of medical records. Asked if he would like to know what was in the Jiffy bag, Lappartient smiled: “Of course, in the Dauphine in 2011. “But you know, probably all of them, they lost their memory.” - PA

McCartney ruled out Pole vaulter Eliza McCartney has opted to miss this weekend’s national track and field championships in Hamilton as she manages her schedule leading into next month’s Commonwealth Games. The Rio Olympics bronze medallist is completing an impressive return after an Achilles injury restricted her for much of last year. McCartney finished fourth at the recent world indoor championships, her first major international meet of the southern season. - NZME

Cowboys need time North Queensland coach Paul Green has warned it will take time for his exciting new front-row combination of Matt Scott and Jordan McLean to click in their first NRL season together. Test prop Scott will officially pack down with Melbourne recruit McLean for the first time on his return from a serious knee injury in tonight’s NRL opener against Cronulla in Townsville. All eyes will be on Johnathan Thurston for his 300th NRL game and a club record 271st appearance for the Cowboys. - AAP

Double double for Ingles Joe Ingles had a career high 10 assists to go with 11 points to snare his maiden NBA double-double in the Utah Jazz’s 104-84 win over the Indiana Pacers. The Jazz (35-30) continued their impressive form, after a slow season start, to close in on a play-off spot. The Jazz have won four straight and improved to 15-2 over their past 17 games. - AP

Hartley impressive Kiwi Brendon Hartley has enjoyed another successful day in Formula 1 winter testing. The Toro Rosso driver completed 119 laps in Barcelona – second only to the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo – while he posted the fifth fastest time of the day. Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel were the only drivers to set faster times than the New Zealander. - NZME

By Dale BuDge The dominance of Holden cars at the Adelaide 500 over the weekend has prompted claims of disparity between the leading manufacturers in Supercars. Holden launched their new ZB Commodore with outstanding returns at the season-opening round. Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen bagged wins in both races while a lone Scott McLaughlin (Ford) podium on Saturday prevented a clean sweep for the brand. McLaughlin’s Shell V-Power Racing managing director Ryan Story admitted his rivals had a major advantage. “Oh man, have we got some work to do,” Story said. “Full credit to the guys next door [in pit lane], they have developed a rocket ship.” The key to Holden’s success is around the design of their car, which uses composite material on the bonnet, roof and boot of the new car compared to steel that is used in the Fords and Nissans. Parity in weight is achieved however with the Holdens needing to carry additional weight but they have managed to put that in the floor of their cars, giving them a lower centre of gravity and ability to corner better than their rivals. “There is no doubt they have done a great job of engineering that car but they have certainly been able to secure some freedoms that have not been afforded to other marques in the past and they have exploited them to a maximum,” Tickford Racing boss Tim Edwards said. “Whenever this happens in a point in time it frees it up for the incumbents to also do the same. “It wasn’t until we saw that car and then started hearing the rumours about its level of weight, and you start to see pictures inside it and you realise what the freedoms they’ve been afforded are. “As a Ford competitor we now need to get on our bike and submit for some changes to our car. It puts you on the back foot a bit at the start.” Edwards knew before the season started that the Holden design was going feature composite parts but not to the full extent. “We had a bit of an idea beforehand that a couple of the big pieces were like that but I don’t think anyone had any idea until we looked in the boot of their cars in the February test and most people’s jaws hit the deck,” he said. “There were a lot of composite pieces in that car. We knew they were doing the roof skin but that was one of about 20 parts that were composite.” Naturally the leading Ford and Nissan teams will start trying to implement the same features to their cars but that process takes time. There is less than three weeks to the next round at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne and they’ll be facing an uphill battle to get the changes through. “It is just a process we have to work through,” Edwards explained. “We are always re-homologating certain parts of your car. There is the design process then the approval from Supercars. “It would be great if we could have something on our cars for the AGP but I would say that is unrealistic. “It will be over the next couple of months we will hopefully be phasing in some upgrades.” - AAP

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll be working on a mystery. You already know who did what, but you don’t know why. You may never know. The exercise of trying to figure it out is what will bring you a degree of enlightenment. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Frustration is a good sign. It’s part of a learning process. You’re on the verge of doing something different. You may need to tinker. Step back and listen to what life is trying to tell you here. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You won’t like every person, but if you limit yourself to dealing with only those you like, you will be hurting yourself. Goldmines of opportunity will be hidden in business with people you don’t fully click with. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The socially acceptable thing earned its status by being widely used and understood. What’s new, by definition, won’t fit that category. So don’t use public acceptance as your gauge. Let your heart be the judge. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): It’s a repeat of something that happened last week, except it’s the negative print version: The darks are light; the reds are green. The shape is the same, but it doesn’t look the same. Does it still mean the same? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Today you’ve a deep humility and a care and love for others. It’s coming through in your interactions, especially since you’ve decided that you don’t have to take the lead. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): All the things you tried that didn’t work have taught you much more than just “what doesn’t work out.” You will be able to apply these lessons. Relax. You’re only getting better. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s a fine day to develop the sense of mystery that already surrounds you by adding layers of silence and secrecy. It’s not always the right approach, but today it will grow your power. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Language changes. Fashion changes. Music changes. There is no right way, only what’s in style now and what’s not. Are love and relationships also matters of style? It’s a theme to consider today. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): In a perfect world, those close to you would sense what you need and help. But it’s not perfect. It’s a world of people born selfish. Getting them to pay attention comes with the territory. Good luck. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): In the business world, one-on-one meetings are hard to get right. Groups find their own equilibrium, but the one-on-one dynamic is trickier. You’re a natural. You’ll put someone at ease today. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Today’s questions: Who gets to know you and who never will? The thing about sharing how you feel is that it’s going to change – and then what about the update?

Ready, set, go . . . BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Hundreds of parents, teachers and students swarmed to the EA Networks Centre pool earlier this week to get amid the excitement of County Swimming Sports.

Top swimmers from primary schools across Mid Canterbury went head-to-head in backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle relays. Town schools and country clusters were able to enter two students into each of the swimming events, as based on the winners of their schools’ in-

dividual swimming sports competitions. Students who took out their events will now proceed to the Canterbury Zone competition at Selwyn Aquatic Centre on April 3. It was the third year the Mid Canterbury event has taken place at the EA Networks Centre.
