■ MCDONALD’S ASHBURTON

Late night ban on foot traffic By Katie todd

Saturday night revellers in Ashburton will no longer be able to finish their night in town by walking to McDonald’s for a feed. In order to ensure the safety of the staff, the restaurant has made the decision to close their doors on Saturday nights between 11pm and 5am, with only the drive-thru available. McDonald’s Ashburton owner

Dave Whalley said the restaurant felt it was the right thing to do, after a couple of incidents in the past. “You only need to ask the police to know,” he said. On Saturday night security staff will still be present, he said, and people will not be permitted to walk through the drivethru. McDonald’s Ashburton hit headlines last year after a video emerged of a boy pushing

LAUNDRY

drinks over the counter and abusing staff members, and in 2013 more than 30 people were involved in an hour-long bloody brawl in the restaurant carpark. While the partial closure is only a trial at the moment, Whalley said the first weekend had gone smoothly, and he had not received any complaints about the change. Last Saturday night, Ashburton Police had been working with Talbot Security Group to

Other fast food restaurants such as Burger King and Pizza Hut will remain open later into the night, but McDonald’s is the only local restaurant offering 24-hour service.

An anonymous Good Samaritan has donated $1000 to Dorie Preschool after it was burgled on Anzac Day. The small community were left reeling last month after someone made away with the preschool’s computers and $700 in cash, while it was closed from the evening of April 24 to the morning of April 26. Preschool manager Lisa Copland said the thief had broken in through a window and proceeded to smash open a secure drawer to retrieve the cash, which had been set aside following an Easter fundraiser. Dorie residents were appalled that someone could do that to a preschool, she said – particularly within the setting of a small rural community. “It was just an invasion of our space,” she said. The preschool held a quiz night last weekend, which had been organised prior to the burglary, but provided an opportunity for members of the public to help out. A particularly generous person, who wished to remain anonymous, had donated $1000 to help cover the losses, Copland said. She said the kind offer blew the minds of staff at the preschool. “We really have an amazing community out here.” Dorie School was established in 2009, and is licensed for up to 36 children. It is the first time an incident of this nature is understood to have occurred there.

■ RUBBISH

Bid to make our town free from rubbish BY KATIE TODD

KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Locals who’d like to see a litterfree Ashburton are invited to a public gathering at the chessboard next week. Devoted litter-picking grandmother Bev Skates is organising a meet-up to discuss rubbish around town and possible solutions. She has been in touch with Keep New Zealand Beautiful and other organisations and hopes the meet-up will pique the interest of business-people, community groups, residents and like-minded litter-pickers, including those who are interested in adopting an area to collect rubbish in. “It’s not a good look when we want to promote our town and district to have all the visitors

passing through to drive down streets with litter everywhere,” she said, “It’s no way to encourage people to stop and enjoy so much of what Ashburton has to offer.” In the long-term, Skates hopes people may be interested in volunteering in their own neighbourhood as “Litter Free Ashburton Volunteers” and meeting up on the first Monday of every month. However, the first meeting will be a chance just to talk about the problems, and put ideas into a suggestion box, she said. “As a community we all need to step up to make Ashburton litterfree,” she said. “Bring your ideas and bring a friend.” The meeting will be held at the East Street chessboard at 1.30pm next Monday.

■ MYCOPLASMA BOVIS OUTBREAK

Awaiting day of reckoning By Colin WillisCroft

Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz

The day of reckoning for Frank and Diane Peters and their 1400-strong dairy herd, which has tested positive for mycoplasma bovis, might be near – but they haven’t given up hope just yet that their cows can be saved. The Peters, who through son Kane and daughter-in-law Anna, farm in the Pendarves area, have received written notification that their herd, which contains 55 years’ worth of genetics and is valued at $4 million, will be destroyed in the next week or so. However, until that day comes they hope a policy of trying to eradicate the disease from New Zealand will be abandoned and instead replaced with what they see as a more common sense approach – living with and managing the disease like almost every other cattle farming country in the world does. “We might be grasping at straws but until the cull trucks come up the driveway we’ll hold out hope that sense will prevail and MPI will decide that management is the best policy,” Diane said. Slaughtering their herd, which cattle tracing has shown came into contact with the disease four years ago but has shown no symptoms during that time, was pointless, she said. Letting farmers self-manage their herd, even if it contained animals that had tested positive, was best for the farmers affected and the dairy industry as a whole, Frank said. “Farmers can handle diseases – they have done for years,” he said. “Where there’s cows in (serious) ill-health we deal with them, either by sending them to the works or by culling on-farm. “That’s normal farming practice.” He said the ability of farmers to manage diseases had been shown by the way they dealt with other animal health problems like bovine viral diarrhoea, which was more difficult to deal

Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Frank Peters (left) says it’s time efforts to eradicate mycoplasma bovis from New Zealand were dropped in favour of managing the disease. He is shown here with his son Kane and daughter-in-law Anna. PHOTO COLIN WILLISCROFT 300418-CW-005

We might be grasping at straws but until the cull trucks come up the driveway we’ll hold out hope that sense will prevail

with than M. bovis as it hit much more quickly. Movement control of herds was also second nature to farmers, Frank said, as they had been dealing with that for years through efforts to control the spread of Tb. “Eradication is senseless. The rest of the world has been managing for years and there’s enough information out there for everyone to follow. It’s time

also rankles, particularly after Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor told Radio New Zealand late last week that farmers overall could expect to pick up somewhere around 40 per cent of the cost of trying to eradicate the disease, which could be as much as $400 million if the total cost reaches the vicinity of $1 billion, something that would not surprise O’Connor. “The Minister wanting the industry to pay more – that’s pretty low,” Frank said. “At the start we were told that it would be like for like. That we wouldn’t be disadvantaged in any way. “He’s gaming us. I know who is going to suffer and it’s the people on the farm. Compensation was supposed to provide farmers with some sort of confidence. That’s not happening.”

we faced up to that.” What the Peters find most frustrating was that despite their herd having been exposed to M. bovis for four years, not one of their cows has displayed any symptoms of the disease during that time. “We’ve never seen anything so why should we slaughter? Look at our herd of 1400 cows. You’d think we would have seen some

symptoms, especially over four years,” he said. “Why haven’t we seen it? “When we were told we had to kill the whole herd on seeing absolutely nothing the first thing we thought was ‘are you for real?’ “No one can tell us exactly how many cows or what percentage of our herd is infected.” The Peters said they have spoken with other farmers who are in the same boat as they are and none of them have seen any signs in their herds either. “If herds in New Zealand are ‘naive’ to bovis then when those infected cows come into contact with naive herds you’d expect there to be some sort of explosion of symptoms,” Diane said. “Why hasn’t that happened? No one has explained that.” The issue of compensation

Pupils restore local beach By SuSan SandyS

Repairs for Mt Somers Track By SuSan SandyS

Wakanui School pupils cleared out of their classrooms and took off to the beach yesterday. But it was all for a good cause, and that is supporting the ongoing Wakanui Beach Restoration Project. The school has been involved in the joint initiative with the Ashburton District Council, surrounding landowners and other groups for about 18 months. Yesterday, pupils from Year 4 up were planting seedlings they had grown from seeds they harvested from plants at the ecologically unique site last year. Deputy principal Amanda Ferguson said the Autumn Planting Day had been a great success, and kicked off with a karakia from principal Hilary Boyce, kapa haka performance and talk by councillor Mark Malcolm. Signs made by students were to be erected at the site. Council open spaces planner Bert Hofmans said it was fantastic to see the project now reaching the stage where flora restoration was under way. One of the milestones had

been having to get archaeological authority from Heritage New Zealand, as Wakanui Beach is an archaeological hot

spot. Maori artefacts have been found in the area, and a concrete footing from a World War Two research station is located

there. “It’s a real community effort, and it’s taken a wee while to get to this point,” Hofmans said.

Mt Somers Walkway Society members are making about $15,000 of repairs and improvements to the Mt Somers Track. President Barry Austin said a new 30,000 litre water tank had been installed at the Woolshed Creek carpark, for supplying the public toilets there. Previously the toilet facilities could become overwhelmed with high usage. South Pacific Conservation Trust had provided $3500 for the project. In addition, the society was in the process of applying for government funds to repair and upgrade the track between Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles Hut. Members had received an initial quote that it would cost about $12,000 to repair storm-damaged areas of the track. The damage occurred after a heavy rain event last month. Water cut holes in the track, and a flash flood eroded the bank around Morgan Stream, requiring relocation of that part of the track to about two-anda-half metres above the creek. He said it was good to see the track receiving high usage, and all levels including families walking it, so members wanted to ensure it was kept to a high standard. “We want to bring the track up to a standard that families can walk it and enjoy the experience,” he said.

■ PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

Father awarded compensation A widowed father who was unable to receive paid parental leave after his wife died in childbirth will be compensated by the Government. Workplace Relations Minister Iain LeesGalloway said yesterday that the Christchurch-based father would receive an ex gratia payment of the equivalent amount to the paid leave he had missed out on. An ex gratia payment is a one-off, no obligation grant. The father was unable to claim paid parental leave because his partner had not worked for 12 months before delivering the baby. “This has exposed a gap in the legislation which is something that we will need to address,” Lees-Galloway said. “More immediately I’m very pleased to say that we have found a solution for this particular gentleman and his family. “[The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment] will make an ex gratia payment to him to the equivalent amount that he would have received under paid parental leave.” Lees-Galloway said this was the first time this had happened. MBIE officials worked incredibly hard to find a “workaround” under the current legislation but it was not possible. “We will now need to look at the legislation,” he said. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she was so concerned about the case that she personally read through the legislation yesterday morning. “I think everyone wants to see that support in place and I have to say I was baffled when I read it,” she told reporters at Parliament. Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges said he backed the Government’s decision to offer the father a grant. “I don’t think I would be critical of the Government coming in with money here … for what is a harrowing case,” he said. Bridges did not point blame at anyone, saying small errors popped up in lawmaking from time to time. The solution comes after the Government said it was urgently looking at a solution for the man. He had been unable to claim the entitlement because his partner had not worked for 12 months before delivering the baby. Lees-Galloway said yesterday that it was a “terrible situation” and “not what we

Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway want for the family”. “We’re urgently looking for a way to make it right,” he said. The baby was born at 33 weeks by Csection after the mother’s heart stopped as she arrived at hospital. After the C-section she started breathing again but then her heart stopped again and she had severe bleeding. She was taken to surgery but died an hour later. She had planned to be a stay-at-home mum, and didn’t have a job in the 12 months leading up to the expected date of delivery so she wasn’t entitled to paid parental leave, according to MBIE. The father, who was also looking after his partner’s two children from a previous relationship, was being supported by his work. But that was not a sustainable option and he wanted to get access to paid parental leave. MBIE said it was aware of how unfair the situation was and was working on a solution. It had checked whether there was ministerial discretion in such cases, but there was not. - NZME

OUR VIEW

M. bovis – eradicate or manage? O

n face value, it’s hard not to think that local dairy farmer Frank Peters is bang on the money. As the disastrous fallout from mycoplasma bovis hits the country at a frenetic speed, the reaction of agencies and industries has been, to an outsider at least, quite mind-boggling. The immediate reaction has been to cull. A logical choice with seemingly illogical impacts. Not only are we culling infected cattle, we are culling entire herds, meaning that farmers like Frank Peters are losing 1400 cattle and facing the end of the road for a genetic line developed over 55 years. There’s no need to hide emotion here – those are some pretty

raw facts. In other major countries around the world, mycoplasma bovis is not a notifiable disease. In fact, it’s considered to be just another part of dealing in dairy farming – much like flystrike with sheep. Those countries aren’t rushing to the works to have infected cattle, and their paddock and farm mates culled immediately, they are seemingly quite calm about

it and treat it accordingly, knowing full well it’s just a part of the business. I would never intend to declare myself an expert on the subject of M. bovis, but I will admit to having done some extensive research in an effort to upskill my knowledge. What was probably the most incredible thing I found, and something that isn’t made public knowledge enough, is the disease has no impact on the milk produced by cattle nor is there any form of contamination of the meat taken from cattle who have the disease. The farming world does seem split however on the best process in which to use to deal with the issue and the more farmers you

speak to the far wider the scope of opinion you will be given. Management as opposed to immediate action, in the form of culling, seemed to be the major preference around the traps and a lot referred to the fact that the instructions outlined by the Ministry for Primary Industries was a knee-jerk reaction. And one that will cost this country billions of dollars. It the story with Frank Peters on page five of today’s Guardian, he states that farmers had shown already that they were capable of managing diseases, such as the way they did with bovine viral diarrhoea which was difficult because it struck so quickly. So, then why are we moving to eradicate so quickly – why

should farmers have to start from scratch to build once again after working so hard for so many years to get to the point where they have got to? What is probably most troubling with Peters’ situation is that his herd was shown to have come into contact with the disease four years ago – and despite showing no symptoms in that time, they are set to be culled – 1400 of them. And now for the Peters’ family it’s a waiting game. They’ve had the letter and now they just wait for the truck to work its way up the drive to take almost six decades of blood, sweat and tears back out the drive to be never seen again. And for what?

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, May 9, the 129th day of 2018. There are 236 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On May 9, 1958, “Vertigo,” Alfred Hitchcock’s eerie thriller starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, premiered in San Francisco, the movie’s setting. On this date: In 1754, a political cartoon in Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette depicted a snake cut into eight pieces, each section representing a part of the American colonies; the caption read, “JOIN, or DIE.” In 1814, the Jane Austen novel Mansfield Park was first published in London. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, acting on a joint congressional resolution, signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In 1926, Americans Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett supposedly became the first men to fly over the North Pole. (However, US scholars announced in 1996 that their examination of Byrd’s flight diary suggested he had turned back 150 miles short of his goal.) In 1936, Italy annexed Ethiopia. In 1945, with World War Two in Europe at an end, Soviet forces liberated Czechoslovakia from Nazi occupation. Inside the F45 cult A

life-changing epiphany came to me last week, when I realised it isn’t the avocado toast that’s rendering us millennials financially ruined. It is, in fact, the trendy gym memberships we use to burn the avocado calories. As a long-serving slave to the Les Mills cult I’ve been guilty of hurling my hard earned cash at Grit classes, and still driving to the gym when I know full well I should walk. But lately an even greedier super corporation has box-jumped its way onto the scene and lunged into my friend’s bank accounts using the power of social media. It goes by the name of F45, and it’s the workout sweeping New Zealand in a blue and red branded sweat storm. First popular in Australia, F45 brings together HIIT, circuit and functional training, along with the Instagram-endorsement of ripped celebrities across the globe. Now even my Auckland friends are among those sucked into the void and all insist I’ll be hooked if I try it too. At first, I was interested – but then I hit up the price schedule. Here’s the thing, I tell them. You’ve got a plastic bag’s chance in hell of seeing me there, because a week at F45 costs roughly the equivalent of eight bottles of Fat Bird Pinot Gris. Sixty-seven dollars! Alas readers … curiosity prevailed. Last week I went undercover into the cult to find out just what makes it seem so special – and here’s what went down. An ominous online waiver proceeded my first visit. I ticked a box and reluctantly released F45 from any liability for conditions I may obtain in the workout including any “illness or soreness, including death”. “Bears” was the class I booked into (I had no idea what that means but figured it sounded relatively cute and friendly compared to the waiver) and Wigram was my destination of choice

Firstly I would like to wish the Wheels Week committee a successful event, going by the previous years I am certain it will be. However, I was disappointed when looking through the phamplet that cyclists have been excluded from the parade this year. When contacted, the organiser

(in all my earlier cynicism for celebrity endorsement, it would be undeniably cool to workout alongside regular attendees Brett and Angel from Married at First Sight). Alas, there were no angels in sight, and instead I was welcomed by Bec, a brunette instructor who lightly dropped the devilish news I’d booked, out of their 27 types of class, “a really intense one for a beginner”. Indeed, on the TV beside her a jargon-jammed blurb described how Bears uses “bodyweight, plyometric and scientific cardio movements specifically designed to push your aerobic threshold to maximum output”. Ah, the ol’ “scientific cardio”. Crackers. Following Bec inside, the relatively small, sterile interior of the studio struck me as unexpected. At F45, there isn’t a mirror in sight to glimpse your own pained self, but alternatively, many of the class wear heart rate monitors and have their suffering projected onto an electronic leader board for all the class to see. Topping the class before mine was a man who reached 225 beats per minute. I’m no cardiologist, but holy sheezus. Several minutes later I was partnered up, warmed up and in the thick of it, carefully negotiating sets around a circuit to tunes pumped through the very American “F45 FM”. I’ve heard other clubs have their own in-house DJ dedicated to providing the bangers (side note, where does one sign up to become a professional gym DJ?) But unexpectedly the atmosphere at F45 was social, and alongside the music was the

chatter of friends. Far from Les Mills GRIT, where dark studios are filled with disorienting cooling mist and your own breath is blissfully drowned by dramatic thundering dubstep, F45 felt like some sort of screwed-up pain party, where people genuinely go for a laugh. While my least favourite involved abdomen-killing mountain-climbers while shakily perched on a medicine ball, I was oddly enthused by an exercise involving a giant sledgehammer which I had to swing through the air. All clubs are fitted with slick TV screens, to remind you what you’re meant to be doing at each stop along the circuit, and count down the remaining time. And the two trainers – charismatic, and no doubt earning plenty of $weet dollar$, delivered some really nice hi-fives along the way. Look readers, I really wanted to dislike it. I really did want to

write this as a scathing review. And while I still gape at the exorbitant price tag and impatiently await my rippling abs, there’s no denying F45 was a breath of fresh air. Unlike Les Mills there were no pushy marketing staff, and less snobbery. In a plot twist even I struggled to accept: people genuinely seem to go because it’s good. So, it is with great regret that I must end this column on an incredibly tragic note, and inform you of my most recent purchase. Goodbye and thanks for reading – from the newest month-long member of Rolleston F45.

explained that it was for safety reasons – there is big machinery in the parade. I thought grouping all the bicycles together – safety in numbers – and setting them off in an appropriate part of the parade away from the big machinery would reduce the risk. One of our local newspapers had a story from the organisers

saying that the parade was open to “anything and everything with wheels” so anyone can enter “expect anything with wheels”. Confused? I am. Yes, the bicycle well and truly deserves its pride and place in our local Wheels Week parade. The trusty bicycle has been used as transport, recreation and sport for decades. Even the Canadian

troops carried their bicycles onto the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day landings. From the early Drasine then the penny-farthing and finally the safety bicycle similar to what we ride today. The parade organisers should remember that Wheels Week is a celebration of the wheel with or without an engine. Greg Hay

■ LEBANON

Hizbollah swept to power Lebanon’s Hizbollah paramilitary movement emerged as the main victor in the country’s first election in almost a decade, securing veto power in the Lebanese Parliament as the prime minister’s fortunes fell. Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said Iran-backed Hizbollah and its parliamentary allies won more than a third of the 128 seats, which would leave them as a dominant force in the Lebanese legislature. The party of Sunni Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri lost a third of its seats, although he was expected to retain his position. Machnouk said a final breakdown of the

nationwide results would be released later. The vote – the first of its kind in nine years - had been hotly anticipated. Television stations aired extensive coverage, and billboards of the candidates’ faces loomed high above the streets of Beirut. Lebanon has long been beset by corruption and division, and the election results were widely expected. But experts said they built on the regional trends that have buffeted the tiny country as next-door Syria is consumed by war. “Everyone expected that the outcome in Syria would set the trajectory of politics in Lebanon, and that is essentially what has

been happening since 2016,” said Emile Hokayem, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Seven years into the conflict, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has essentially secured victory with the support of Iran and Russia, while his major opponents in the Arab states of the Gulf have ended their calls for regime change. A key political player in Lebanon, Hizbollah has also been one of the Assad Government’s major allies, sending thousands of fighters to battle Syrian rebels and Isis. The movement’s leader, Hasan Nasrallah, hailed its electoral success as a “political and moral victory”. - PA

Couple weds after crocodile bites off bride’s arm A couple attacked by a crocodile wedded days later in a Zimbabwean hospital, where the bride was recovering after losing an arm. “In one week we went from shock and agony to a truly amazing experience,” 27-year-old Jamie Fox said yesterday. Fox and his then fiancée, Zanele Ndlovu, were canoeing on the Zambezi, one of Africa’s longest rivers when a crocodile attacked them on April 30. Zenele lost her right arm and suffered injuries to her left hand. Five days later, they married in a hospital chapel. “We were glad we still had our lives and managed to keep our wedding date, although we had to do with a much smaller venue. The celebrations went ahead at the original venue but Zenele and I had to remain at the hospital,” Fox said. He described the wedding as “incredible”. Victoria Falls Guide, a travel website, describes canoeing on the Zambezi above the Victoria Falls “the perfect activity for those who not only want to see the abundant bird and animal life but also want to experience the peace, tranquility and beauty of the Zambezi River”. For the couple, the experience turned into a terrifying incident. “I was shouting, trying to save her. She was not complaining of pain when we managed to pull her out of the water, maybe because of the shock. We were hoping the doctors would save her arm but that was not to be,” said Fox. - AP

Robert Downey Jr

Sherlock Holmes returns Nearly seven years after Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hit theatres, Warner Bros Pictures says a third instalment of the Sherlock Holmes franchise is coming in 2020. The studio said this week that Robert Downey Jr would reprise his role as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective alongside Jude Law as his counterpart Watson. Sherlock Homes was a box office hit for the studio when it was released in 2009, just one year after Downey Jr also made his debut as Iron Man. A sequel quickly followed in 2011. A director has yet to be announced for Sherlock Holmes 3, however. The film is dated for a Christmas 2020 release. - AP

The day is celebrated by Star Wars fans because it sounds like the movie’s line, “May the force be with you”. Toddler taken, eaten by leopard Ugandan authorities are hunting for a leopard in Queen Elizabeth National Park after it snatched and ate a ranger’s 3-yearold son. The toddler had been left in the care of a nanny at the unfenced staff quarters of a safari lodge in the park, when he was taken by the leopard. Wildlife authority spokesman Bashir Hangi said the child had followed the nanny outside. “The maid was not aware the child followed her. She heard the kid scream for help, she intervened but it was too late. The leopard had vanished with it in the bush and a search was mounted until we got the skull the next day,” he said. “The hunt is on with the intention of capturing the leopard and removing it

from the wild because once it has eaten human flesh, the temptations are high to eat another human being, it becomes dangerous,” he added. Queen Elizabeth is Uganda’s most-visited national park. Tourists flock to watch leopards roam the Mweya Peninsula, which lies beside Lake Edward. The park also hosts African buffalo, Nile crocodiles, lions and chimpanzees. The attack comes just a week after a British safari park owner was attacked by a lion in South Africa. Mike Hodge, 71, suffered a broken jaw after he was mauled in Marakele Animal Sanctuary in Thabazimbi. Hodge had been showing visitors around the park when the big cat charged him and dragged him into bushes.

Video footage showed terrified tourists screaming for help as the lion mauled its victim. Keepers eventually killed the 10-year-old lion, named Samba, and Hodge was taken to hospital. Two years ago, in South Africa, a 6-yearold boy was snatched by a leopard at Kruger National park, but the youngster escaped with his life. Kellan Denny was playing with his brother on a wall when the leopard sank its teeth into his shoulder and dragged him away. However, the leopard let go of the traumatised boy, allowing his father to rush in and carry him to safety. The incident was the first of its kind in 40 years, according to a spokesman for Kruger National Park. - AP

Key song left off The new Guns N’ Roses box set includes five discs, 25 unreleased demos, and a 96-page booklet. But it omits one key song. Described as the “ultimate fan’s dream fulfilled,” the Appetite For Destruction: Locked N’ Loaded Edition is a super deluxe version of the hard rock band’s debut album. The box set celebrates the 1987 release of Appetite For Destruction, one of the most popular rock albums ever made. There are various versions of the box set available but the biggest edition also includes the EP Lies, but with one omission. That would be the song One In a Million, which caused controversy when it was released in 1988 over some pretty controversial lyrics. The set is released on June 29. - NZME

Housing Kiwis’ top concern sults showed big generational differences among New Zealanders. “Older people [are] more concerned about healthcare and younger people much more concerned with the cost of living than their elders. “Interestingly, the huge concerns about housing are felt across all income groups – whether you’re rich or poor, housing is the big worry for New Zealanders.” Wealthier households were more concerned about crime, mentioned by 26 per cent of those earning more than $100k, and 34 per cent of poorer households – those earning less than $30,000 – were more concerned about healthcare. Men and women also varied on their concerns: after housing, men being more concerned with crime (27 per cent), whereas 34 per cent of women were more concerned with poverty and inequality. We still see people very much at the heart of managing aircraft in and out of airfields safely for many years to come,” Sumner said. “Our controllers in Invercargill will be given the option to relocate to a centralised hub when the location is determined. This is something we will be working closely with them on over the next couple of years.” The cost cutting will come from not having the construction costs for traditional towers throughout New Zealand. Invercargill Airport general manager Nigel Finnerty said the current tower would require significant upgrade over the next few years, “so other options to deliver safe and reliable air traffic control must be considered”.

“This technology, whilst still relatively new, is proving itself to be the way of the future. We are proud to be leading its introduction into New Zealand. It will initially operate from a building on the airfield before it then is moved off-site. Sumner said Invercargill had been chosen as an ideal starting point for the digital shift because the size of the airport. “Traffic levels are low enough compared to an international airport to make implementing a totally new system manageable,” Sumner said. While Invercargill will provide a first for New Zealand digital towers are already being trial led worldwide. He said the digital approach would “provide greater aviation safety” given the technology available. - Otago Daily Times

Invercargill site of first digital air traffic control tower Invercargill’s air traffic will be directed from somewhere else in the country in future as the city assumes the role of guinea pig for the New Zealand aviation industry. Airways, a state-owned enterprise which is an air navigation service provider, is looking to shift from bricks and mortar towers at airports to an installed national centralised hub where air traffic is controlled digitally. Airways’ long-term plan is to have a centralised hub which will see many of New Zealand’s regional locations control towers moved and planes directed remotely. Invercargill Airport will house New Zealand’s first digital air traffic control tower, expected to go live in 2020 following operational tests. A digital tower will allow air traffic to be directed by controllers in a remote location watching live footage of the airfield from cameras. Under the existing system, controllers manage traffic from a tower that overlooks the runway. Airways chief executive Graeme Sumner indicated job numbers in general would not be affected as a result of the centralisation, but it could result in Invercargill losses as employees will have to relocate in the future. “Digital tower systems give controllers additional tools to do their

Part-time workers are more worried about healthcare. Unemployment is understandably a higher-ranked issue for those seeking work, and the retired are notably more concerned about drug and alcohol abuse. Compared with Australia, where the survey has been running for eight years, Australians are mostly concerned with healthcare, crime and living costs. They are also twice as concerned with the economy as New Zealanders. * To view the full survey go to The New Zealand Ipsos Issues Monitor. - NZME

A recent survey on key issues concerning New Zealanders has shown that housing accessibility and affordability are at the forefront of people’s minds. The first of the quarterly New Zealand Issues Monitor reports, run by global market research company Ipsos, interviewed 610 respondents over the age of 16. It sought to track what New Zealanders were concerned about, who is worried about what and which political parties are seen to be best able to improve matters. Key results show that from 20 issues, the top six are dominated by housing accessibility and affordability, selected by 41 per cent of people; followed by poverty and inequality on 29 per cent and healthcare on 27 per cent. These are followed by crime and law on 24 per cent, inflation and cost of living on 22 per cent, and drug and alcohol abuse also on 22 per cent. Fun with fabulous feijoas I

f you’re fortunate enough to have a feijoa tree in your garden you’ll probably be wondering what to do with the bucket loads of fruit that are now dropping to the ground. Give some away but keep some too because there’s more to feijoa than just cutting it in half and scooping out its delicious flesh to eat straight from the skin.

Feijoa loaf 1 C peeled and chopped feijoas 1 C boiled water 1 C white sugar 50g butter 1 egg 1 t baking soda 2 C self-raising flour or, 2 C plain flour and 2 t baking powder ■ Place feijoas, boiling water sugar and butter into a pot. ■ Simmer for 5 minutes, cool slightly, then beat in your egg, flour, and baking soda. ■ Pour into a loaf tin and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 45-50 minutes.

Pork and feijoas 20g butter 2 pork fillets 100ml ginger wine 6-8 feijoas (about 200g flesh) 100ml cream salt freshly ground black pepper ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Season the pork and brown on all sides. Remove it to a dish and place in oven to finish cooking (about 10 mins). Remove it from the oven to a warm place to rest for a few minutes. Meanwhile, pour off any excess fat from the pan. Pour in the wine and bring it to the boil, scraping off any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Peel and chop the feijoas, and add to the pan. Simmer until the liquid has thickened. Stir in the cream and simmer until slightly thickened. Adjust the seasoning to suit. Slice the pork fillets on the diagonal. Arrange on a plate with the sauce poured over them.

Curried chicken with feijoas 2 T olive oil 4 chicken breasts, skinned, boned, and cut into bitesized chunks 1½ C carrots, thinly sliced 1 C red, yellow, or green pepper, diced 1 C onion, thinly sliced 1 clove garlic, minced 5 ripe feijoas, peeled, halved lengthwise, and cut into slices 1 T curry powder ¼ t allspice 1/8 t pepper

1 T cornflour 1 2/3 C chicken stock ■ Heat 2 tablespoons oil in pan. ■ Sauté chicken 3 minutes or until nearly done; remove from pan. ■ Heat remaining oil, sauté carrots, bell pepper, onion, and garlic for 5 minutes. ■ Add chicken back to skillet with feijoas, curry powder, salt, allspice and pepper. ■ Stir cornflour into chicken stock, pour into skillet with chicken mixture. ■ Bring to boil; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. ■ Serve with rice.

Feijoa crumble melted butter, for greasing 110g (¾ C) plain flour 100g (½ C) brown sugar 75g chilled, unsalted butter cut into small pieces 50g (1/3 C) almonds, chopped 1 t ground cinnamon 12 – 15 feijoas ice cream or cream, to serve ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Lightly brush a shallow 1.5 litre (6 C) ovenproof dish with the melted butter. ■ Combine plain flour and brown sugar in a medium bowl. ■ Using your fingertips, rub in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. ■ Add almonds, cinnamon and toss to combine. ■ Refrigerate until required. ■ Peel, slice feijoas into 1 cm-thick wedges. Place in greased dish.

■ Sprinkle crumble mixture over feijoas to cover. ■ Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until crumble is golden. ■ Test feijoas are tender with a skewer. ■ Serve with ice cream or cream.

Feijoa chutney 1kg feijoas 500g onions 300g raisins 500g pitted dates 500g brown sugar 1 T ground ginger 1 T curry powder 1 t ground cloves ¼ t cayenne pepper 4 t salt 4 C malt vinegar ■ Wipe feijoas, trim ends and finely slice. ■ Finely chop onions. Coarsely chop raisins and dates. ■ Combine in a large saucepan. ■ Bring to the boil, and cook gently for 1½ to 2 hours until the chutney is thick. ■ Make sure it doesn’t catch on the bottom of the saucepan. ■ Spoon into hot, clean jars and seal.

Zingy feijoa salsa 4 feijoas, peeled and finely chopped 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 T finely chopped fresh coriander 1 T brown sugar freshly ground black pepper

■ Mix all the ingredients together.

Feijoa paste 4 C of feijoa flesh 3½ C sugar (approximately) ■ Scoop the flesh from the feijoas. ■ Process the feijoas in blender until they are smooth. ■ Pass the puree through a sieve or mouli to remove seeds. ■ Measure your feijoa puree (it should be around 3¼ cups). ■ Measure an equal volume of sugar and mix into the puree. ■ Put the puree in a wide flat frypan. ■ The puree should be no deeper than 2-3cm in the bottom of the frypan. ■ Bring the puree to the boil. ■ Stir frequently until the mix has reduced to about half the volume and you can draw a wooden spoon right across the pan before the trace fully closes up. ■ This will take about 20 to 30 minutes. ■ Pour the paste into a non-stick container (or a container lined with baking paper) about 2cm thick. ■ Leave the paste to cool, this may take hours or even overnight. ■ If it’s oozing liquid when it’s cool, cut into large blocks and dry on a cooling rack in a warm place for a few days. ■ Store the paste between layers of baking paper in airtight containers in the fridge – it will keep for several months.

Gigantic form reversal

Warriors charge back

Mark Williams won the world snooker championship for the third time, 15 years after his last, after beating John Higgins 18-16 in one of the great finals at the Crucible Theatre yesterday. At 43, Williams became the oldest winner of the sport’s biggest prize since 1978 when fellow Welshman Roy Reardon won his sixth and final world title. Williams was talked out of retirement last year by his wife following a slump in form that was so profound that he didn’t even qualify for the Crucible. “I watched it in a caravan with a beer,” Williams said, typically deadpan. Twelve months later, he was lifting the trophy surrounded by his wife Joanne and kids, and pocketing a first prize of 425,000 pounds following the closest final in 13 years. One of the more laid-back players on the circuit, Williams started the two-day final jaded after a late finish to his semi-final against Barry Hawkins on Saturday. He was eating in a kebab house at 2.15am on Sunday and was seen snacking on crisps and

Kevin Durant had 38 points and nine rebounds as Golden State soundly defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 118-92 yesterday to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their Western Conference semi-final series. The Warriors responded to their 19-point loss in Game 3 with a resounding effort that produced a wire-to-wire win with leads as large as 26 points. Durant made 15 of 27 shots. Stephen Curry scored 23, Klay Thompson added 13 and Quinn Cook, who was a Pelicans reserve earlier this season, contributed 12 points. The Pelicans hit only 36 per cent (32 of 88) of their shots, missing 22 of 26 3-point attempts. Meanwhile Chris Paul had 27 points and 12 rebounds while James Harden scored 24 points to power Houston to a 100-87 win over the Utah Jazz, taking a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference semi-final series. Paul, playing the sidekick to Harden for most of his first season in Houston, took centre stage, controlling the tempo and getting to his favourite spots as the Rockets led from start to finish. - AP

Mark Williams became the oldest player since Roy Reardon to win the title. “To play John in a final is an experience in itself,” Williams said. “You’ve got to expect a comeback because when you’re 50 or 60 in front, he’s the best I’ve ever seen at clearing up and that includes Ronnie O’Sullivan. “I was thinking, ‘I’m not going to get over the line here’. I knew if I didn’t get enough he was going

Still, Williams built a 14-7 lead, only for Higgins to pull himself back to 15-15 to set up a dramatic finale between two players who graduated from the same Class of ‘92, along with snooker’s boxoffice star Ronnie O’Sullivan.

In brief Ref spray costly Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs coach Dean Pay has been fined $25,000 for hitting out at officials after his side’s 22-20 loss to the Brisbane Broncos last week. Pay, in his first year at the helm, made the most of his podium time following the match and shared his thoughts about a number of calls made in the match. The 48-yearold labelled calls made in the loss “disgraceful” and “ridiculous” – with two particular refereeing decisions in his firing line. - NZME

Williamson in hot form Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson put in a man of the match performance to all but end the Indian Premier League playoff hopes of several Black Caps teammates. The Sunrisers Hyderabad captain scored 56, his fifth half century of the tournament, to lead his side to a five-run win over a Royal Challengers Bangalore side which included Tim Southee and Colin de Grandhomme. Brendon McCullum is also a member of the Bangalore squad while Daniel Vettori is the coach. The victory moved Hyderabad to 16 points and the top of the IPL table. - NZME

Warner a big problem Good work in defence was a key area for the Barbarians in their big win over the Shirley Hawks.

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Baabaas run rampant By Erin TaskEr

Erin.t@thEguardian.co.nz

A 60-14 demolition of the Shirley Hawks on Saturday saw the Ashburton Barbarians maintain their place at the top of the Canterbury division one rugby league competition. Devaun Thompson, Darryn Bolt, Lafaele Talosaga and Puroku Teokotai all scored doubles in the win, while Xavier Bartlett and Arron Heke scored one try each. Marvin West knocked over four conversions and Teje Heke add-

ed a further two conversions. It was a strong win coming off the bye, and a good start to a tough three weeks on the road for the Barbarians, which sees them next take on the Celebration Lions followed by the Burnham Chevaliers. But Barbarians manager Matt Milne said Saturday’s 60-14 scoreline didn’t reflect how much defensive work his side had to do. “Shirley did have us in our red zone for long periods after repeat sets, mostly due to us giving

away cheap penalties,” he said. “In saying that we had a very strict referee who pulled up anything marginal which in turn was a good test on the boys’ ability to handle pressure and adjust tactically. “Our structures on attack are coming together very nicely and it is like watching poetry in motion as we capitalised on nearly every try-scoring opportunity we created.” The Barbarians side which took to the field on Saturday fea-

tured some players having their first outing of the season. One debutante, Len Wilson, along with James Ihaka, took out player of the day honours. “With a large squad of 28 players it has created a healthy competition for positions and all the boys are making sure they are getting to training and pushing hard for selection,” Milne said. “We have such good depth in the squad this year and anyone can step in and do the job seamlessly.”

Maguire tipped to take charge of Kiwis Former South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire looks set to be named the new head coach of the Kiwis. Reports from Australia have suggested the 44-year-old has fastened as the favourite to be awarded the job vacated by David Kidwell after a disastrous World Cup campaign, with confirmation of his appointment by NZ Rugby League imminent. “It hasn’t been announced yet, but my understanding is that Michael Maguire will be named as the New Zealand coach,” Jimmy Smith, pundit and former NRL player, told the Bill and Boz show on Monday night. “I know Graham Lowe was very strong coming out in support of Barnett … he’s missed out on the job, Michael Maguire will get it,” Smith added. Maguire was sacked as Rabbitohs coach

last year after a dreadful campaign, with just nine wins from 24 games. This season he had been working for the NRL as their high performance coach for referees. Maguire spent five years at the Redfernbased Rabbitohs, highlighted by an NRL Premiership win in 2014 to break a 43-year title drought. Maguire has been vocal with his interest for the job, telling NRL 360 a fortnight ago that it was an opportunity which had long piqued his interest. “The international game has always appealed to myself to build, especially [a team] of New Zealand’s calibre, would be a great experience,” Maguire said. The Kiwis next play in June’s Denver test against England, meaning a new coach is likely to be announced shortly. - NZME

Australian cricket is undergoing its most significant overhaul in recent memory after a shattering ball tampering controversy saw Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft axed and coach Darren Lehmann resigning. New coach Justin Langer, a revered servant of the baggy green, is preparing to repair the tarnished image of Australian cricket, but cricket journalist Robert Craddock says inviting the former vice-captain back into the mix will go against the grain of Langer’s master plan for the baggy green. - NZME

Paine ODI skipper Cricket Australia said yesterday that test skipper Tim Paine will also captain the one-day international team during next month’s tour of England, but selectors are yet to decide who will lead the side’s title defence at the 2019 World Cup. Paine was named skipper of a 15-man squad for the five-match series, Australia’s first since the ball-tampering scandal. Selectors have installed Aaron Finch as the ODI team’s vicecaptain in place of the disgraced Warner and named the Victorian as captain of the Twenty20 side. Australia will play five one-dayers and a T20 match against England from June 13-27. - NZME

Fa still trending upward

After locking in three more fights with American promoter Lou di Bella, New Zealand heavyweight Junior Fa has a lot to be excited about. Three victories will increase his world rankings significantly but Fa’s first priority is to put on a better display in his next bout after admitting trying to pummel his last opponent into oblivion without engaging his boxing brain. Fa maintained his undefeated professional record with a victory over Craig Lewis, but it was via a majority decision and not his best performance despite him going into it in the best physical shape of his life. - NZME

■ SAILING

Perfect start for Kiwi sailor Sam Meech made a perfect start to the Laser European championships in La Rochelle yesterday, winning both of his races to take an early lead in the regatta. He was joined near the top of the overall standings by fellow New Zealander Andrew McKenzie, who is fourth after finishing second in both of his races. Meech has been a model of consistency this year, always finishing in the top four including collecting silver at the recent World Cup regatta in Hyeres and bronze at the Princess Sofia regatta in Palma. Another top quality fleet has assembled in France but, with 160 competitors in the Laser, the sailors are split into three groups for the first three days of qualifying before three days of gold fleet. Meech came out on top in his races against the likes of Olympic silver medallist Tonci Stipanovic and fellow Croatian Filip Jurisic. “It was a good day for me and I managed to come away with two really good races,” Meech said. “We had fantastic conditions with about 12 knots and really

nice waves so it was glamour sailing out there and my speed felt really good. “The only tricky thing was the tide. We had an outgoing tide but it was hard to know what was going on at times in the second race. “In some parts it felt like an outgoing tide and in other parts it felt like it was incoming. But in that sort of breeze it was a speed

race so it was good fun. This is a long regatta, six days, so we have a couple more days of qualifying before three days of finals. “It’s nice to have a good start but it’s really only the beginning. With 10 more races, we will see how it goes.” McKenzie also knows not to get carried away by his start but is happy to be in the mix after the first day.

The 23-year-old, who is looking to repeat his performance of 12 months ago when he won bronze at the Laser European championships, was in group 1 and finished level on points with world champion Pavlos Kontides. “We had steady sea breeze conditions so it was important to get clear from the start and go fast,” he said. “I was able to get my strategy right in both races which put me in the mix at the top mark. “I was feeling pretty quick upwind so I just tried to minimise manoeuvres and keep it simple. “It’s nice to have a good start but, with so many days to go, it doesn’t mean a whole lot. “The goal will be to remain consistent and take each day as it comes.” Susannah Pyatt made a steady start to the Laser Radial competition, settling into 24th on the back of a 14th and 12th in her two races. Olivia Christie was the next best of the New Zealanders in 39th after a 23rd and a 20th and Annabelle Rennie-Younger was 66th. - NZME

New Zealand-bred three-year-old Civil Disobedience has another opportunity for Group One honours when he runs in Saturday’s South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville. Rain key for Ironbark Lightly-tried galloper Ironbark will head where the weather is worst this weekend. “He’s going really well and he’ll either run at Rotorua or New Plymouth, wherever the track is wettest,” trainer Kylie Fawcett said. Ironbark has a win and a placing from four starts and a recent trial placing in an open heat at Te Teko has him ready to make a first-up impression. - NZME

Parore opens wallet Former top class cricketer Adam Parore has dipped his toes into the thoroughbred industry with his first purchase at New Zealand Bloodstock’s May Sale yesterday. The former Black Cap went to $36,000 to secure lot 381, All By Myself, a Zabeel mare who is infoal to Waikato Stud’s freshman sire Tivaci. “My partner has a farm in Clevedon, literally just 10 minutes down the road from Karaka,” he said. “She is breeding from a few broodmares, this is actually the first time I have bought anything.” - NZME

Sales topper off to Aus After purchasing the top lot on day one of New Zealand Bloodstock’s May Sale, Sydney-based bloodstock agent Andrew Williams repeated the same dose on day two when bidding to $180,000 to secure the top lot of the sale. That title went to Mongolian Beauty (lot 371), a Fastnet Rock full-sister to Group Two winner Mongolian Falcon, who will stand at Willow Glen Stud for $3000 + GST this coming breeding season. Williams was happy with his purchase, saying the three-year-old filly was his main target at the sale. - NZME

Pop Star trying blinkers Lady Luck didn’t ride with Pop Star Princess last time out and a gear change may be instrumental in turning her fortunes around at Waipa today. The promising three-year-old will take on her own age group in the Timmo’s ITM, Te Awamutu 1150m off the back of an unplaced effort in the Gr.3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m). “You can just forget that run, it was the first time in all her trials and races that she didn’t race in or near the lead,” part-owner and trainer Fred Cornege said. “She got pushed from pillar to post.” Pop Star Princess had won one of her previous three starts, including a defeat at Rotorua of Short Fuse, who finished runner-up behind Power Dream in a competitive race at Te Rapa last Saturday. “This will be the final run of her

M2

preparation,” Cornege said. “If she had raced well in the Breeders’ Stakes she wouldn’t be starting, but I didn’t want to turn her out after that. “We’ll give her one more with the blinkers on to get her confidence back – they don’t become a poor horse on one run.” Meanwhile, Matamata trainer Kylie Fawcett is also hoping for a form turnaround from Ricky Baker in the Paper Plus, Te Awamutu 1150m. “I was a bit perplexed after his run at Te Rapa, but he didn’t like the kick back,” she said. “He trialled really well the other day and hopefully he can sit in behind them and then get out into the clear air.” Ricky Baker has won two of his four starts and finished third in an open 1000m heat at Te Teko toward the end of last month. - NZME

Justify punter happy Justify’s ownership team took home $1.24 million after the Kentucky Derby, the $NZ500,000 they shelled out for the colt looking like money well spent. A woman from Austin, Texas, scored nearly the same payday after Justify’s win. Placing an $18 Pick 5 bet, she correctly predicted the winners of races 8-12: Limousine Liberal, 4-1; Maraud, 8-1; Funny Duck, a 40-1 long shot; and Yoshida, 10-1. And when Justify crossed the finish line first in the Kentucky Derby, the 12th race on the card, the woman was $1.2 million richer. - NZME

■ RUGBY

Money talks, says de Klerk Reports of South African teams quitting Super Rugby for Europe have gained validity, with a leading provincial president saying that money will dictate the shape of the game. Lions president Kevin de Klerk has told the Daily Telegraph there is a real chance South African sides will defect to Europe once the current Sanzaar broadcasting deal ends in 2020. A Wales Online report this week has sent shocks through the game, after it claimed the Sharks, Lions and Stormers would soon be heading into the PRO14 competition joining teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy. There were immediate denials from governing body Sanzaar and further to that, Sharks chief executive Gary Teichmann – a former Springboks captain – told Radio Sport yesterday there had been no discussions about PRO14. Teichmann said the Sharks and Sanzaar were on the same page and discussing what the right format would be post 2020. “No discussions have been held in terms of looking at PRO14 – I don’t know where that has come from. “We enjoy having New Zealand teams here in Durban, there’s always a good rivalry between South African sides and New Zealand sides. “Let’s keep that going.” Discarded Super Rugby sides the Cheetahs and Kings have already broken down the door in

Israel Folau has taken to social media, once again, to express his Christian beliefs, tweeting a YouTube video link from late American Evangelist David Wilkerson that may raise eyebrows at Rugby Australia. Folau tweeted the video with the words: “With great love I wanted to share this video in the hope that people watch it and think about it. Jesus is coming back soon and he wants us to turn to him through repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38) please don’t harden your heart.” - NZME

Squire, Naholo re-sign

South Africa’s Cheetahs are happily playing their rugby in the PRO14 competition. Europe, competing this year in the PRO14. South African teams considering following suit will not break the current contract, but it could be open slather after that. De Klerk said: “Maybe ultimately, the millions of pounds on offer in Europe will influence the decision. There is nothing concrete at the moment. “When this broadcasting deal comes to an end, there’s going to

need to be some close negotiations with Sanzaar. “From my point of view, I would like to see South Africa remain in Super Rugby, but the European currency is making it difficult.” Many South African players are already in Europe and the Kings and Cheetahs are reported to have brought substantial money into the PRO14, which competes against the English and French

domestic competitions for limelight. The Telegraph reported that if South African teams did quit Super Rugby, the country would still want to be part of the Rugby Championship involving test matches against New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. Sanzaar is preparing a 12-year plan and the Sydney Morning Herald last week revealed options being considered. - NZME

Thompson looking doubtful for Highlanders The Highlanders are entering a critical part of the season – and may have to do it without one of their form players. However, the side appears to have firmed up about who is going to fill the boots of Lima Sopoaga next year.

Jesus is coming soon

The men from the South limped to a heavy 38-12 loss to the Sharks in Durban and face a tough few days. First, they have to fly all the way back to Dunedin. From there, they will have to get over any jet lag, get some

tired and wounded bodies back in shape and then face up to the top South African side, the Lions, at Forsyth Barr on Saturday night. Obviously, the task is not easy, but to make things worse, form back Rob Thompson is in doubt.

Thompson left the field in the second half against the Sharks and failed his head injury assessment. He has entered the concussion protocol and would seem an unlikely starter for the game against the Lions.

The Highlanders have fought off what they term a very aggressive overseas market and signed two key players for next season. More signings are expected to be released in the coming days as the franchise already has up to 28 players on its books for next season. The franchise announced yesterday it had signed winger Waisake Naholo and loose forward Liam Squire for next year. Other players who have signed on for next year include midfield back Rob Thompson, flanker James Lentjes and prop Siate Tokolahi. - ODT

Sonny Bill returning Sonny Bill Williams is poised to return to the Blues after being out for seven weeks with a wrist injury. If the All Blacks midfielder does take the field against the Hurricanes at Eden Park on Friday it will be a welcome comeback; if he starts in the No.12 jersey it will necessitate a re-shuffle to a young but improving combination between Rieko Ioane and Orbyn Leger; both of whom excelled against the Waratahs in Sydney. Ioane’s pace and power on attack at Brookvale Oval was again a major weapon for the Blues, but his defence in the final, frantic moments of the 24-21 victory, just the Blues’ third of the season, was just as important. - NZME

Gatland on the move The Highlanders have added three more players to their full-time playing roster for 2019 – including Blues’ first-five Bryn Gatland. 22-year-old Gatland will join the southern club on a two-year deal as a replacement for the departing Lima Sopoaga. He will be joined at the club by young loose forward Marino Mikaele Tu’u, and winger Tevita Nabura. “These guys have already shown a lot of potential at Super Rugby level this season we are confident that the more time they spend in our programme the more their game will grow,” said Highlanders CEO Roger Clark.

Mark yesterday’s date down as a watershed moment for women’s football in New Zealand. New Zealand Football has agreed to a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, which will give the Football Ferns parity with their higher profile All Whites counterparts. NZF and the New Zealand Professional Footballers’ Association (NZPFA) have come together to complete their CBA, and it means NZF becomes the first national sports organisation to agree on equity and parity for their senior men’s and women’s national teams. It’s also believed to be a world first for football, with no other country among Fifa’s member nations (which number in excess of 200) striking such a deal. The revised CBA offers four key factors for both the elite male and female footballers: pay parity, equal prize money, equal rights for image use and, most notably, parity across travel while representing New Zealand. The most striking aspect is the travel. It will mean that the women will be entitled to business class travel for flights of six hours or more, giving them the same privileges as their male counterparts. New Zealand Football Chief Executive Andy Martin says it is a significant announcement for football in this country. “We are pleased to have the Collective Bargaining Agreement confirmed and with parity for both the All Whites and the Football Ferns,” Martin says. “The Football Ferns, who are ranked inside the top 20 in the world, are the flagship of women’s football in New Zealand. “They are role models for the 30,000 female players throughout our country. “It is important to recognise their contribution and form a revised agreement alongside the PFA,” he adds. “This has been a positive negotiation and I would like to thank the PFA for the manner in which these discussions have taken place. “We come out of these discussions wellaligned and excited about what our national teams can achieve in the next three years under this CBA.” Harry Ngata, a former All White and the New Zealand Professional Footballers’ Association Chief Executive, is likewise pleased with the terms of the new agreement.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The love (philos) of wisdom (sophia) is philosophy. You’ll be thinking a lot about your personal philosophy, deciding what it is (and whether it’s changed), honing it and living it more fully. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): A person’s character is only as great as he or she treats the weakest in the group. Be very wary of anyone who seems to take advantage of (or be oblivious to) those in a down position. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll be drawn to connect. You have a lot to share, but you won’t know what it is until you get into the jazz of social interaction. Even you will be surprised by the interesting titbits that come up. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You are in perfect step with your people, and it is for this very reason that you’re able to step back and create a new and complementary rhythm. Think of it as a syncopation that keeps everything livelier. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll put your heart into what you make. People who experience your creation will feel this, perhaps experiencing it as an intangible tug on their own heartstrings. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your service is a sacrifice, yet you may also be paid for it. That fact doesn’t take anything away from the gift you give when you dedicate yourself to doing the job with full attention and love. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): This is a time to do full disclosure, be transparent and show your work. You will create bonds as you fascinate others. You’ll improve quickly when they point out strengths and help you see mistakes. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Usually, you know when to step in and lend a hand. If the day needs saving, you’ll save it. But today brings up some grey area. You may not be sure whether it’s your place or your turn. Pause. Only step in when you’re sure. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You don’t want to be repetitive, but the fact is they won’t get it unless you repeat yourself. Say it differently each time or say it the same; that doesn’t matter. If it’s worth saying, it’s worth repeating. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll have self-editing to do today. You’ll pump up the fun parts, amplify the essential, axe the superfluous, nix the unnecessary. All this polish is possible because you once put it all out there. Be proud! AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’re wary of being sold, as you should be. When it’s a good match, you don’t need to be sold. When it’s something you’ve been looking for or believe in, need and will use up, you’ll go all in. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There won’t be a lot of transactions that absolutely must happen today. So you can turn off the distractions and concentrate on what you most need to be doing, which will be producing and creating.

Juniors get right into Rippa Collegiate’s Lachie Leadley has the try line in his sights and team-mate Beau Spence in support, while Celtic’s Lachlan Ross chases them down during the opening day for junior rugby in Mid Canterbury on Saturday. The trio were taking part in the under-six Rippa Rugby grade. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union rugby development officer Jason Ree said junior numbers were good, but down slightly on last year. The younger grades like under-six and under-seven Rippa Rugby were bursting at the seams, but as kids got older they were dropping off, and work was being done to try and keep young players in the game. Part of that was introducing a Quick Rip form of the game in schools which was like Rippa Rugby, but aimed more at teenagers, and included lineout and scrums, but no tackling.
