Picnic romance on offer for Valentine’s Day By Sue NewmaN

When Valentine’s Day rolls around on Wednesday, there’ll be a new player in the field of romantic venues. Community owned Trotts Gardens will be opening its gates between 6pm and 8.30pm to create an opportunity for couples to share a picnic in one of the district’s very special spots. The Trotts Garden Trust bought the property from Alan and Catherine Trott last year to ensure the internationally recognised garden remained in community hands. While it will continue to be a major player as one of New Zealand’s best visited horticultural attractions for tourists, the trust’s intention is for the garden to be a place that locals can use and enjoy as visitors and at events, trust chair woman Robin Kilworth said. “We starting our Valentine’s Day celebrations this year as quite a low-key affair, people can come along with their picnic rugs, their food, bubbles and balloons and sit anywhere in the garden,” she said. The garden has a large number of special places and secluded ‘rooms’ that would be perfect for couples wanting a quiet, romantic place to celebrate the day, Kilworth said. The first 15 couples to arrive will receive a bottle of wine. “People can come for a picnic or they can just come with some bubbles and enjoy the garden before maybe going out for a meal,” she said. Couples will be charged $30 to use the venue but there is no need to book, just turn up and you’ll be met by one of the garden volunteers. “We just want to see couples enjoying the gardens, they’re a private and very romantic environment,” Kilworth said.

Alcohol and bullying were identified as the two main health issues faced by young people in the Ashburton District. A survey of 12 to 24-year-olds carried out by the YMCA involved 292 young people with 78 per cent citing bullying as their number one concern. Alcohol was seen as an issue by 66 per cent and drugs by 67 per cent. This is the third survey carried out by YMCA South & Mid Canterbury, but the first that has included Ashburton. It was conducted in May and June via social media.

Stress emerged as a significant issue for young people with 44 per cent saying over the past 12 months they had experienced stress that had negatively impacted on them either always or most of the time. The main stressors in young people’s lives were listed as school and exams, family pressures and having a life that was too busy and overloaded. The survey was presented to Ashburton District councillors on Thursday and its findings needed to be looked at very closely, said councillor Russell Ellis, who is also a council representative on the

Ashburton Youth Council. It was a concern that so many young people said they did not think the district was a safe place to live, he said, with 12 per cent often feeling unsafe and 34 per cent sometimes feeling unsafe. He was also surprised by the high percentage saying they regularly felt stressed and anxious. In terms of safety, Ellis said young people cited concerns over gangs, but he believes rather than the established gangs that plague areas like Timaru, concerns locally were more around groups of teens who were wearing bandanas. nothing to lessen safety concerns, Ellis said. There was a higher level of concern around drugs and mental health for older respondents. Most thought there were opportunities for them for employment or to study or training, but were less confident about opportunities for career advancement. The high level of concern over bullying has Ellis worried and he believes schools need to be taking a tougher line on the use of cellphones on campus. “Bullying can be something as simple as a text telling someone they’re fat, but it’s still bullying and

it’s easy to do,” he said. Ellis said he was pleased to see some schools were considering taking a tough line on phone use during school hours and suggested it should be something that needed a district-wide focus. “This is a document that someone needs to pick up now and do something with. This is what these young people are saying, that’s the reality and we can’t ignore it.” While there were significant concerns among young people across a range of issues, more than half of the Ashburton youth surveyed believed the district was a good place to be a young person.

One enormous pumpkin, too few recipes By Sue NewmaN

The small pumpkin plant was one among many sitting on the garden centre shelf. There was nothing to indicate it was destined for glory, for bigger things, but when it took up residence in Anne and Maurice Bond’s vege plot, the young plant began a new and larger life. For several months it grew leaves, flowered and spread its vines as it should, but at Christmas the Bond family noticed there was something different about the plant; it had grown one very, very large, pumpkin. And as the weeks ticked by the pumpkin continued to grow, snuffing out the life of others on the vine as it absorbed every nutrient available. Yesterday with the pumpkin in danger of taking over the vegetable garden, Maurice called time on the giant. He cut it free and rolled it out of the

vege patch. Lifting was impossible. Once it was sitting on the lawn they realised they’d grown a monster. Anne grabbed the bathroom scales and they rolled the vegetable on board. It tipped the scales at 30kg. “She’s pretty solid, we’ll be here to Christmas eating it,” Maurice said. He suggested the chooks could have some of it, but Anne wouldn’t have a bar of that. The pumpkin will be eaten – by them, their daughter, their friends and their neighbours. “I like pumpkins in muffins, scones, soup and it freezes well, but I think I’ll need to find a few more recipes,” she said. Once the giant is cut they’ll be keeping a few seeds to see whether it’s a one-off giant mutation or whether the pumpkin carries the genes of greatness. There’s no secret to growing the giant other than compost just like every other vegetable in the Bond garden.

In brief Cyclone risk ‘moderate’ The Samoan government has issued a tropical cyclone warning as meteorologists upgrade the risk that Cyclone Gita will form in the Pacific. The chance of a tropical cyclone forming over the weekend is now moderate to high, but forecasters say they can’t predict where it will hit just yet. For years a two-day festival that brought buyers and sellers of motorhomes and caravans together was the baby of Murray and Bev Meadows; but this year the event will have a new owner. When he staked out the sites for last year’s event Meadows decided it would be his last. After more than 15 years where the event had become his life, but it was time to look for a new organiser. The Motorhome Extravaganza started on a small scale, as a sales point that would bring buyers and sellers of motorhomes and caravans together. It grew to become one of the largest of its kind in New Zealand, an event that attracted thousands each year including hundreds who turned up in their campers

to enjoy a weekend of camaraderie. Meadows found his new event organiser in the Ashburton Lions Club, the organisation that had been gate custodians for many years. This year the convenor’s job has become the lot of Rex Whiting who said that while the Lions were new to the job, they were taking over an event that had run like a well oiled machine. “Murray and Bev had decided it was time to get some new blood in. They let us know they had decided to bail and that they were looking for a buyer and we decided it would be something we’d be interested in. We’d been well treated by them over the years and they gave us a pretty good dividend for the work we did on the gate,” he said.

“They’ve left a tremendous legacy. You talk to people and everyone knows about the event.” Deal done, the Lions club has taken over the motorhome mantle and with one week before the gates open, Whiting said there’s every indication it will be even bigger than its predecessors. The same format will be used this year with vehicle sellers and trade stalls taking up most of the space but there are a few additions. Local vehicle dealers will have displays of vehicles suitable for towing caravans and there will also be a display of e-bikes and racks that are likely to appeal to the ‘golden oldie’ camping group, Whiting said. Another new attraction will be a display of restored retro caravans. One of the big features of the

event is the growing numbers of people who turn up as social campers. Last year numbers were so high latecomers had to be accommodated in commercial camping grounds. Work on the expo site at the Ashburton Showgrounds will start on Tuesday when sites are marked out and Whiting anticipates trade stalls and early campers will arrive from Thursday or Friday. Private sellers are expected to start arriving on Friday and while many sites have already been booked, traditionally a number of van owners turn up on the day hoping for a sales spot. The South Island Motorhome and Caravan Extravaganza will be held at the Ashburton Showgrounds on February 17 and 18 from 9am to 4pm.

Two people have been killed after a crash involving a petrol tanker near Marsden Point in Northland. And an unmarked police car heading to the smash has also collided with another vehicle, injuring two police officers and the driver of the other car. The crash blocked State Highway 1 about 500m north of the Mangapai intersection. The fatal crash happened about 12.10pm. Senior Sergeant Dan Cleaver said the crashed police car was extensively damaged and the two officers were taken to hospital in an ambulance as a precaution. The only person in the other vehicle was also taken to hospital. - NZME

Measles warning Christchurch is facing its second measles warning in just over a week after an 11-year-old contracted the virus in a doctor’s waiting room. Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) said the child got measles after coming into contact with a 30-year-old man who contracted the virus overseas. Another measles warning was issued on January 31 after a 30-year-old man was confirmed as having the virus. - NZME

One dead in crash One person is dead following a crash on the Otira Highway in Westland. Police and St John Ambulance staff rushed to the scene of the crash shortly before 4pm. Two people were in the single car that was involved. One person died at the scene. The second person was airlifted to Grey Base Hospital with injuries. Vehicle tipped over in collision BY KATIE TODD

A central Ashburton car crash left one vehicle toppled over onto its side on Thursday afternoon. Two vehicles collided on Peter Street at around 4.45pm and one was tipped on to its side, but no occupants were seriously injured. Police, St John Ambulance and Fire and Emergency crews headed to the scene to help but by the time they arrived, all occupants were out of the cars and it was a matter of helping the occupants put the vehicle back upright. St John said it was a “very minor incident”, and two patients were assessed and treated at the scene for minor injuries. When it comes to building a library for the future, Ashburton library manager Jill Watson says the community will be the complex designers best source of ideas. While the Ashburton District’s planned new library and civic centre project is still in its infancy, the district council has an opportunity to create a facility that will meet the needs of users today and users well into the future. To do that, however, it was critical the largest possible pool of ideas from both the community and library professionals was tapped into, she said. “I’m hoping as part of this process a specific library consultant will be used

because it’s so important we get this right and I hope there’s some public consultation about what people would like, perhaps some focus groups.” There were a number of new libraries that had been built or were in the planning stages around New Zealand, Watson said, and she hopes the council will draw on ideas from the best of these to ensure Ashburton’s new library is the most futuristic possible facility. “A building is one thing, but the services are something else. If you have hohum services people won’t be inspired to use it; I believe using a library consultant is critical to the success of this project,” she said. To remain relevant well into the future,

libraries needed to be more than just book repositories, they needed to offer the community a wide range of information options, Watson said. A survey of young library users, undertaken several years ago, showed they were already looking to a future where libraries offered much more than book borrowing. They were wanting things such as self issue kiosks that are only now about to arrive in Ashburton. Ideas such as that showed young users were looking at libraries quite differently to adults, she said. The council had an opportunity to create a library that was used by other councils as an example of what a library of the future should be, Watson said.

House prices steady House prices in the Ashburton District have risen just 0.5 per cent over the past year. QV data shows the average price of a house sold in the district in January was $350,514. Over the past three months prices have risen 1.3 per cent and are 25.2 per cent up on the market peak in 2007. Mackenzie retains its position as New Zealand’s fastest riser, with prices up 27.1 per cent over the past year and 10.3 per cent over the past three months. In the South Island several areas of Dunedin, Clutha and Southland have also shown double figure rises. Eleven areas in New Zealand, including Queenstown-Lakes now have an average sales price of well over $1 million. Auckland’s coastal North Shore is the most expensive place to buy, an average sales price of $1.410 million. Ruapehu, Kawerau, Rangetiki, Taraua and Buller were at the opposite end of the price spectrum with average prices below $200,000. Ruapehu is the cheapest place to buy at $174,026.

Huge truck delivers some big life-saving lessons By Katie todd

Fairton School students were buzzing with excitement on Thursday when two enormous vehicles parked up on the school grounds. A 13-metre long bouncy castle truck and a 50 tonne MAN Road Safety Truck stopped off at the school during their annual start-of-year family barbecue. Students and families were able to look through the MAN Road Safety Truck and pick up valuable tips on truck safety – from using pedestrian crossings to New Zealand road safety signs. Fairton School Principal Rebekah Clement said the safety truck, from the New Zealand Trucking Association, and the bouncy castle, from Heavy Trucks Christchurch, were organised and sponsored with the help of Talley’s, who are located down the road from the school and share a road safety partnership with them. She said it was a fantastic day for the students and their families, who also enjoyed a picnic dinner and a swim. The MAN Road Safety Truck was launched last year and has been doing the rounds from Christchurch to Picton, but has never been as far south as Fairton. The New Zealand Trucking Association helped to educate people on safe driving and behaviour around trucks after the Kaikoura route to Picton was closed, and more truckies were forced to take the alternate, more dangerous route. Trucks are involved in more than a quarter of New Zealand road deaths, but the MAN Safety Truck has been designed to provide valuable education to all ages in a bid to bring this statistic down.

Cricketer denies sex-related charges A former top cricketer has pleaded not guilty to sex charges against eleven women. Jason Robert Trembath, 29, appeared in the Napier District Court yesterday accused of indecently assaulting nine women and sexually violating a further two. He initially faced two sex-related charges but yesterday police laid nine more in relation to alleged attacks on women in public places in Hawke’s Bay and Rotorua between September 28 and November 5, 2017. Trembath was also charged with stealing $8657.02 in cash and cheques from his employer Bidfood Limited at Gisborne between August 17 and 18 last year and making a false statement to a police officer alleging a theft had been committed on August 18. The manager also pleaded not guilty to these charges through his defence lawyer Nicola Graham. Trembath previously captained Rotorua cricket club Central’s premier side and played for the Bay of Plenty senior team. He has most recently played for Taradale in Hawke’s Bay. In April 2011 he played a season abroad after signing a contract with Carlton Cricket Club, one of Scotland’s leading cricket clubs in the premier league. Trembath was remanded on his existing bail to appear again in the Napier District Court on March 16. His name suppression lapsed this week in relation to the alleged sexual offences against two women in Hawke’s Bay. He was accused of indecently assaulting a woman who was walking her chil-

He was charged on November 10 after police released CCTV footage of a “person of interest” to the public as part of an investigation into reports of women being grabbed while walking in public places. He appeared in the Rotorua District Court at the end of November when Judge Greg Hollister-Jones declined a request for interim name suppression. However, Trembath’s lawyer Harry Edward indicated he would appeal any decision to lift name suppression to the High Court. An appeal was filed but abandoned last week by his Napier lawyer Nicola Graham. Hawke’s Bay Area Commander Inspector Dave Greig said the investigation team have worked “diligently” on the reported attacks, and said the investigation remains active. - NZME

Lotto winner has given away $10m The winner of last Saturday’s $20.2 million Powerball jackpot has split his winnings with family members, saying it will help “keep me on an even keel”. The Christchurch winner, a sparkie in his late 50s, had the winning ticket in his wallet the whole time but had resisted the urge to check his ticket straight away, Lotto said in a statement. “It’s been all that anyone has been talking about around here,” said the winner. “Like everyone else in Christchurch, friends have been asking me if I had a Lotto ticket – and then asking me why I hadn’t checked it yet.” The man knew he had bought his ticket from the Hornby Mall Lotto, where the winning ticket was bought. He decided to delay checking his ticket so he could keep pretending he might be the winner for a bit longer. “I thought when I checked my ticket, I’d find out for sure it wasn’t me. And it was fun to dream for a while,” he said. He checked the ticket midweek, but had a knot in his stomach when he handed it over, he said. Then the winning music rang out and the words “First Division winner” popped up on the screen. “The Lotto lady handed me a piece of paper that said ‘$20.2 million’ on it.

“You think you know how you’re going to react when you get news like that, but to be honest all I felt was this huge sense of relief. My first thought was ‘yay, I can retire now’.” The winner headed straight to his partner’s work and handed her the paperwork. “All she said was ‘you’ve got to be kidding me, right?’ “There a few tears and a couple hugs, but we had to hold it together as she had to go back to work. I don’t think she got much done that day.” The pair sat down with a drink in hand and started calling their immediate family, many of whom shed happy tears for the pair. The winner said what made it more special was that they had already given away half the money. “Family is the most important thing and we are so excited to be able to share our luck with the people we love most – and know that it’s not just our life that has changed. “And by giving half away, there’s no chance I’ll go crazy with my winnings ... It’ll keep me on an even keel.” He also plans to use some of the winnings to take their families on holiday next year. - NZME

School scraps homework An Auckland school is scrapping homework – asking parents to instead read with their children. Newton Central School will this year introduce reading only as homework, with children bringing home books and a poetry folder, and parents encouraged to sign and comment in a reading log. Riki Teteina, principal of the primary school, said staff had been looking at the policy as part of their professional development. “For children in primary school it is about the cultivation of the love of learning. That comes down to creating an environment where children enjoy learning. One thing that really is important is for our parents, community and staff to promote the love of reading,” Teteina said. “We want children to be developing other competencies – for example, joining clubs, joining sports teams, being in-

volved in a range of activities. “There is a lot of research out in regards to the effect of homework of student achievement. And particularly in primary schools, there is very little research out there that shows homework improves achievement.” Teteina said there were a number of primary schools that had a similar philosophy of focusing on reading for homework. That focus didn’t mean the school wasn’t focused on other areas of learning, such as ensuring students learnt their times tables. He said another aim was to reduce evening stress. “Alleviating that stress that parents often have in the evenings – they are exhausted, their children are exhausted, and they end up having arguments over homework. Rather than actually having positive discussions about how the day went.” - NZME

Jack offers up some worthwhile thoughts on what you might be able to do to avoid it happening to you.

t’s the middle of the night, there’s absolute darkness and not a soul in sight. Except for one. There’s a lone figure, lurking in the shadows – illuminated only by the light of the stars in the sky. He’s dressed in black from headto-toe and blends in with his surrounds as though invisible. Jack* moves quickly, like a lion hunting. He knows where his target is and without hesitation or warning he strikes, sending glass shattering, breaking the cooling silence as he pounces and snatches his prey from its unwitting peacefulness. And as quickly as he’s there, he’s gone. Back into the darkness, already formulating his next attack in his head. That routine became Jack’s life for more than five years, he’d roll from suburb to suburb, or from town to town and go through the same process – sometimes successfully, other times without luck. He was living on the streets, crashing on mates’ couches and maintaining a lifestyle that revolved around theft, drugs and alcohol. It was a downward spiral and a tough scab to pull right off. “I found that a lot of what happened depended on luck, sometimes you’d stumble across something brilliant and other times you’d completely luck out. “I made a living out of it for quite a while. I’d do three or four jobs a week– not all of them successful, but one good score was enough to keep me going for a week. “Looking back now I’m not proud of it, in fact what I was doing was utter bullshit and through restorative justice I learned a lot about what it was doing to the people I was offending against.” With a rap sheet as long as his arm and a couple of stints inside after being caught, Jack now lives a crime-free life. He’s focused on his good job, his partner and their two kids and wants to do better with his life. Four years clean and he’s trying to make positive contributions to the community he lives in near Christchurch and does a lot of volunteer work in an effort to try and make up for his wrong-doings.

“I would like to think that eventually I could make up for a lot of it, but I don’t think I ever will completely to be honest.” With a recent spike in opportunistic crime around Ashburton in the past few weeks, the Guardian initially approached Jack to ask if he had an insider’s advice for residents which they could perhaps implement in an effort to keep their property safe and secure – but also thought it was worthwhile telling

his story too. “There is no real rhyme nor reason to it I suppose,” he said. “I used to look for opportunities, anything that might have been able to lend a helping hand to making things easier. “Targets would often present themselves, other than having to go and find them. “What’s going on in Ashburton at the moment seems to be [both] pretty calculated and opportunis-

tic, they’re looking for easy smashand-grabs and things that will leave minimal disruption and less of a chance of a trail.” In Jack’s own words, leaving the simple, eye-catching stuff sitting out in the open is the first major mistake a lot of people make. “You would like to think that you could leave your camera locked up in your car overnight, but the truth is you are taking a risk in doing it. “Those sorts of valuable items

are easy-gets, because they can be quickly turned around for a bit of cash if you know the right people – so that’s why you see so much of that sort of stuff going missing all the time.” Jack recalled a job he did about 10 years ago in Nelson, he was eventually arrested and charged over the incident but the opportunity at the time, considering his mindset and desire to fuel his addictions was just too easy to pass

up. “I was walking down the street one night, it was early in the evening and as I walked past a car parked on the side of the road I noticed there was a laptop and camera sitting in the back seat. “Both looked pretty up-to-date and worth a bit of money, so it automatically caught my attention.” Jack spent a bit of time surveying the neighbourhood and looking for security lights, pets that would make a disturbance, or anything that might see him identified with the intent of returning under the cover of darkness to make his move. “I decided that if it was still there later that night I was going to make the grab. “I reckon it must have been about 1am in the morning. I’d gone away and then come back and the street was dead quiet. “The car hadn’t moved and everything was where it was when I first noticed it, so I took it. “Smashed the window with a rock, grabbed the stuff and was gone. All in the space of about a minute. “It was really that easy and I think it was the ease of jobs like that which kept me going back and doing it.” Eventually, that job caught up with him due to some shabby dealing when trying to get rid of the items for cash and Jack spent some time inside following the incident. “I guess why I told that story was because it just shows what kind of opportunists are out there. “It might be a little bit annoying to have to lug that stuff inside at night, instead of leaving it in your car and don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t have to do it, but if you want to assure you’ll still have it in the morning then it’s the best thing you can do.” Jack’s biggest recommendation to anyone is to take that little bit of extra time and secure things properly. Install a couple of security lights up your driveway, get an alarm for your car – those are automatic steer-clear jobs for most opportunistic thieves. “If you pre-empt and prepare then it’s less likely, little things like security lights are an automatic turn-off in my experience.” * Jack’s name has been changed

It may take a conscious effort to begin, but it will soon become second-nature to lock windows and doors every time you leave and while you’re at home. Fit keyed locks to all your windows, how ever small or high up. Fit double-keyed deadlocks on external doors. A solid timber door is safest – a strong lock on a weak hollow-core door won’t protect you. Deadlocks mean thieves can only leave by the way they got in, and make it harder for them to steal big items like TVs. (Don’t deadlock your doors while you’re inside, and keep keys right by the door in case you need to get out fast in an emergency.) Install patio bolts on sliding doors – a common weak spot. Put a peephole in your front door and get a good quality, lockable screen door to put a barrier between you and anyone who comes to the front door.

Don’t leave spare keys outside Burglars know all the hiding spots: under the front door mat, on a window ledge, beneath a plant pot

or in the letterbox or meter box. Leave keys with a neighbour or friend instead. Keep your car keys in a secure and hidden place as burglars will steal a vehicle if the opportunity presents itself.

Lock your side gates Side gates allow thieves easy access to the back of your house, away and out of sight from the street.

Lock your garden shed and garage Not only are they full of valuable and easy-to-steal tools, but they usually contain implements that thieves can use to break into your home. Always lock doors between your house and garage. And don’t leave bikes or lawnmowers on the front lawn, even while you’re at home.

Install sensor lights Keep your house well-lit. And trim trees and shrubs, especially those close to windows and doors that provide cover for intruders as they try to break in.

Don’t advertise that you’re away Whether you’re away for a day or two or a few weeks, try and keep your home looking as lived-in as possible.

Don’t advertise your possessions Don’t leave the box of your new TV or computer outside the house. Cut boxes into pieces to recycle.

‘Beware of the dog’ Many burglars are put off by a barking dog; although a dog in the backyard might not stop them breaking through a front door or window if the animal doesn’t bark too much and attract attention. Even if you don’t own a dog, think about putting a ‘Beware of the dog’ sign on your gate.

Pan-roasted fish with prawn, chorizo and tomato salsa Cauliflower cream: 1/2 large cauliflower Milk Handful fresh coriander 1t coriander seeds, crushed 1t white peppercorns, crushed 200ml cream, 1/2 whipped Salt and white pepper to season Herb and caper dressing: 60g capers Good handful of basil leaves Good handful of italian parsley Small handful of mint 2 cloves garlic 1t dijon mustard Juice of one lemon Extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper Fish: Extra virgin olive oil 1 large chorizo sausage, diced 1/2 punnet cherry tomatoes 1/2 red onion, finely sliced Salt and black pepper 4 x 170g market fish fillets, boned and skin on 4 large raw prawn cutlets Garnish: 1 lime 1T caster sugar

■ For the cauliflower cream: Break the cauliflower into small florets and place in a pan with enough milk to cover. ■ Tie the fresh coriander, crushed coriander seeds and peppercorns in a small piece of muslin cloth and place in the milk. Simmer until the cauliflower is very soft. ■ Drain the cauliflower and discard the milk and muslin bag. Puree with a stick blender. Set cauliflower aside to cool. ■ When cool, fold in cream in four parts and season. ■ For the herb and caper dressing: Wash capers well to remove saltiness and add all ingredients except the olive oil and salt and pepper to a processor. ■ Process ingredients adding olive oil gradually to produce a nice puree. Season with salt and pepper. ■ For the fish: Fry chorizo in a little olive oil until crisp and remove from pan, reserving oil in pan. ■ Cut cherry tomatoes into quar-

ters and mix with diced red onion and chorizo. Season the fish and fry in the chorizo oil, starting skin side down until crispy, turn once and finish. Remove and quickly sauté prawns in the same oil. Garnish: Cut a lime in half, dip the cut side into 1T caster sugar and place sugar side down in a hot dry pan to caramelise. To assemble: Gently reheat cauliflower cream and place a spoonful in the centre of a serving plate. Place a spoonful of caper dressing on the plate and place fish on top, skin side up. Top with the chorizo/tomato mix. Place a prawn on top of the fish and serve with a caramelised lime, microherbs and a drizzle of oil and balsamic reduction. US govt to shut down again

New Zealand shares fell, rounding out a 3.7 per cent weekly decline as investors adjust to increased volatility and rising global bond yields that are undermining equity markets that have been at record highs. SkyCity Entertainment Group gained after kicking off earnings season and Scales Corp fell. The S&P/NZX 50 index dropped 84.77 points, or 1 per cent, to 8,092.37. Within the index, 40 stocks declined, seven gained, and three were unchanged. Turnover was $143 million. Stocks across Asia followed Wall Street lower for another day as volatility remerged in what’s been a whippy week of trading. China’s Shanghai Composite was down 4.1 per cent in afternoon trading, while Japan’s Topix fell 2.2 per cent and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index

slipped 0.8 per cent. “People are coming around to this point that the jitters that we’re experiencing are for a good reason and that is growth in the world is looking better and therefore interest rates have the possibility of rising,” said Stu Williams, head of equities at Nikko Asset Management in Auckland. “We’re just trying to figure out how it works with countries like the US who are accelerating a bit faster and will most likely have shorter-term rates rise versus New Zealand and Australia where it’s not clear shorter term rates need to rise in this calendar year.” Fruit exporter Scales led the benchmark index lower, falling 2.8 per cent to $4.48, followed by honey products maker Comvita down 2.8 per cent to $8.75 and

telecommunications network operator Chorus which declined 2.6 per cent to $3.825. Global logistics group Mainfreight fell 2.5 per cent. SkyCity rose 0.5 per cent to $4.05 after reporting a 12 per cent gain in first-half profit on a recovery in its international business and said it was on track to deliver modest annual growth, kicking off corporate earnings season. Nikko’s Williams said the casino operator was largely tapped into the domestic market and said most companies reporting don’t have a close connection to global markets and will be “a bit more of a New Zealand story”. ■ FUJI XEROX ACCOUNTING SCANDAL

Final executive in scandal named The identity of another former senior executive facing a civil suit from office products company Fuji Xerox over a $355 million accounting scandal can now be revealed. Mark Donald Allright is the second defendant listed in court documents between three branches of the Japanese-based company and three former senior executives. The other executives previously published and named in court documents are former managing directors Neil Whittaker and Gavin Pollard. Last September Fuji Xerox New Zealand, Fuji Xerox Finance and parent shareholder, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific, filed civil proceedings in the High Court at Auckland against former senior executives

from the New Zealand operation. In June, Japanese parent company Fujifilm had released an independent report which revealed “inappropriate accounting” in operations in New Zealand and Australia amounting to about $355m between 2011 and 2016. The National Business Review has reported the amount could be as much as $480m. Allright’s identity has been previously suppressed, but a judgment by Justice Pheroze Jagose released yesterday, following a hearing on Monday in the High Court, dismissed his application for interim name suppression. The judge also dismissed an application by NBR to inspect and publish the parties’ statements of

claim and defence in its newspaper and online. Allright had sought to keep his name secret until either a potential trial or further order of the court. NBR, represented in court by editor Duncan Bridgeman and reporter Victoria Young at the indulgence of Justice Jagose, accepted that its application was premature in advance of the defendants filing their defences, but said it required access to the court file to provide “fair, balanced and timely” report of the proceeding. However, Jagose said access to the files for the purposes of balanced reporting is likely to “beg more questions than it answers”. - NZME

A shutdown – technically a lapse in agency appropriations – became inevitable as GOP Senator Rand Paul repeatedly held up votes on the budget plan, which is married to a six-week government-wide spending measure. The Senate recessed around 11pm local time with plans to reconvene just after midnight. ne of the key acceptances in life is being able to admit when you get it wrong. If you can accept that at times you are going to make mistakes and sometimes head down the wrong path, then you’ll be a better person for the experience. Yesterday was one of those days. On Friday morning, in this very column, I wrote of the frustrations facing police here in Ashburton during one of our more prolific crime sprees in recent years and how that frustration was starting to show on the faces of our police who are stretched to their absolute maximum. In stating that it was about time for the Police Minister

Stuart Nash to step up and make some positive changes and endear himself to the people of this community, I misled myself into believing that the buck stopped with him and him only. Of course, the powers from which the Police Minister can operate under don’t stretch as far as allocation of officers – that responsibility lies solely with the Police Commissioner. So, I’ll admit to pointing the frustration in the wrong direc-

tion – and said as much to Nash when I spoke to him yesterday. But despite the discrepancy, the frustration still boils over. What point does it have to get to before it’s too late – will it take an absolute crime epidemic before anything is actually done. Nash made some good, valid – and at times political – points during our conversation and I appreciated his time in talking with me. But it doesn’t solve the problem. Short of standing on the corner of West Street with a sign or a picture of Uncle Sam saying “We Want You” – the police force can’t do much more about recruitment. The process is tough, and it will take a long time before we get anywhere near to reaching

the proposed figure of 1800 officers as a part of the Labour and NZ First coalition. Meanwhile, while I am happy to admit I am wrong, I will not allow accusations of not showing political neutrality slide quite as easily. We are a paper who will provide any person within this community, and often from outside of this community, a voice. A place in which they can share their tales and their woes. That means we hold no restrictions on race, religion, or political association. If you want to speak and what you have to say is factual and correct then we will, in almost every case, give you the chance to do it. So, to be informed yesterday

by more than one party that we are showing a political allegiance was also frustrating. While I can see how it might look that way to some, particularly those who didn’t vote a particular way, we are in fact only allowing someone to express their opinions and extend the offer to anyone in a similar position to do exactly the same when they feel it necessary. I will, however, remind those who like to leave rather trivial and abusive voice messages and notes that their particular method of communication isn’t quite appropriate for a response. A face-to-face conversation for such matters, I’ve always found, is so much better – so feel free to pop upstairs at Somerset House and say hello.

have been at Waitangi every Waitangi Day for 17 years. I love Waitangi for its beauty, the contradictions, the Nga Puhi welcome and the opportunity for learning. It is always different yet the same. There is always the heat, the crowds, the watermelons and the waka. The politics is like that too, always different but some things keep surfacing that the Crown would like to avoid. Palpable in the softness of the dawn karakia is the hope for a nation and, equally powerful, the spoken and unspoken energy of unfinished business. People who say it was the best Waitangi Day yet this year and there was no protest, do not understand the true nature of the event. The treaty grounds were buzzing with the unique and positive experience of a prime minister who came for five days and led a public breakfast for all under the trees instead of a VIP elite event inside the Copthorne Hotel. She also reframed the day as one where dissent is not failure which is particularly refreshing for dissenters tired of the shallow media assessment of Waitangi in terms of protests are bad, smiling is good. The lower camping ground was very different. In tents, buses and marquees intense dis-

cussion about He Wakaputanga (the Declaration of Independence,1835) and the meaning of Te Tiriti in our lives was under way. I sat in on a session about the way the settlement claims processes actually extinguish tangata whenua legal rights. I heard anger and dismay about the Government’s intention to sign the TPP. There was discontent from veteran leaders of the tino rangatiratanga movement that the Prime Minister was only engaged in social issues for Maori as if these were disconnected from sovereignty. As I drove up to Waitangi the Prime Minister was on national radio saying water rights and other fundamental constitutional issues were not her focus. Her commitment is to jobs, housing and infrastructure in the regions, which are vital, but they are not Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments. I listened to Maori activists working on climate change who want an end to oil drilling contracts, but the new Government has ruled this off the table. So much for climate being our “nuclear moment”. I met manawhenua of the north fighting to protect both the quality and the control of water. Whanau evicted from ancestral land and the Ihumatao campaigners standing up for the stonefields in Mangere gave impassioned presentations calling for our help as no Government

has offered them any solutions. Two T words keep emerging despite the happy honeymoon at Waitangi, tino rangatiratanga and TPP. I enjoyed the mushrooms and scrambled eggs cooked by MPs, but like many people I met, I am still hungry for the discussion of sovereignty issues, because the equity and poverty issues are fundamentally connected to the loss of land, resources and culture which should have been affirmed and honoured since 1840. The Greens call for a review of the treaty claims settlement process is yet to be embraced by Labour, but it is critical if this process is to bear some resemblance to justice for hapu in the long term. Waitangi is the symbolic event where the relationship between the Crown and tangata whenua is annually confronted. When Don Brash received a bit of mud in the eye it was a small reminder of the mud he slings daily over the indigenous people of the land. Steven Joyce was hit by a plastic dildo as a summary of his contribution to peace and wellbeing in this country. Jacinda Ardern received a wahakura basket for her baby and warmth in exchange for the warmth she personally brought to Waitangi Day. However, the T words remain and they will not be hypnotised

away by the rhetoric of inclusion. An investment deal which weakens national sovereignty, let alone tino rangatiratanga, is about to be signed. This deal and the setting aside of Article 2 of Te Tiriti discussions in favour of generic improvements to housing and jobs is a recipe for failure. There is a desperate need for well-paid work and homes for Maori whanau, but the over-representation of tangata whenua in all the negative statistics is not solved by avoiding the dialogue on dual sovereignty and the need for healing of the intergenerational trauma of colonisation. We all have a part to play in this dialogue of national peacemaking, it’s a long-term project requiring courage at every level. The new generation of leaders, such as Justin Trudeau and Jacinda Ardern, will be judged on these issues, not by the charisma of their outreach, but by the progress towards a decolonised constitutional transformation under their watch. – NZME Catherine Delahunty is a former Green MP. Desperate for work Former S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole has left his fans in tears after discussing his life living on the breadline. The 40-yearold singer, revealed that he has fallen on hard times and has been experiencing money problems since being declared bankrupt in 2015. Last month, Cattermole attempted to ease his financial struggles, by selling off a framed presentation platinum sales award from New Zealand on eBay. He also tried to sell his BRIT Award. Now, the star revealed the extent of his financial woes, saying he’s been forced to live off instant noodles and beg reality TV producers for work.

North thumbs nose at US North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over an extravagant military parade in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Squareyesterday, grabbing the spotlight on the eve of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea to thumb his nose at Washington while making a point of showing off his new-found restraint toward Seoul. The parade itself had been anticipated for weeks. North Korea announced last month that it would hold a big event to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of its military. But instead of broadcasting the morning event live, North

Korean television aired an edited version later in the day, giving it a somewhat lower profile than expected. The parade was also shorter and featured fewer missiles than the previous one, which was held in April last year and unveiled five new kinds of missiles – surprising analysts and generating headlines worldwide. This time, Kim fine-tuned his more fiery rhetoric toward Washington. Addressing tens of thousands of troops and civilians assembled on the square below him, Kim said the parade marks North Korea’s emergence as a “global military

power” despite facing the “worst sanctions”. He called for his military to maintain a high level of combat readiness against the United States and its followers to keep them from infringing upon “the republic’s sacred dignity and autonomy even by 0.001 millimetres”. He made no mention of the Olympics in the parts of his speech that were broadcast. It was unclear whether the North showed the entirety of his speech during the recorded coverage of the parade. The tone was in line with Kim’s bigger strategy of late. He has been making a major diplomatic push toward South Korea since he announced a

last-minute proposal to send a delegation of athletes, officials and entertainers to the Pyeongchang games during his annual New Year’s address. The moves have been generally welcomed in the South. Even as the missiles were rolling by his viewing stand, South Korean officials announced that Kim’s younger sister, due to attend Friday’s opening ceremony, will have a luncheon with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. That in itself is a major breakthrough for the Koreas. Kim Yo Jong is one of Kim Jong Un’s closest confidants and she will be the first member of the Kim family to visit the South. - AP

The 37-year-old has shared a photo – which has sparked huge debate – of herself in a pair of bike shorts from sportswear company 2XU, founded by a Kiwi and two Australians. Rohingya say military cut off their food Abdul Goni says the Myanmar government was starving his family one stage at a time. First, soldiers stopped the Rohingya Muslim from walking three hours to the forest for the firewood he sold to feed his family. Then Buddhist neighbours and seven soldiers took his only cow, which he rented out to fertilise rice fields. Next, he says, they killed his uncle and strung him up on a wire for trying to stop the theft of his buffalos. By the time Goni saw bodies floating down the local river, of fellow Rohingya killed for ille-

gal fishing, he knew his family would die if they didn’t leave. On bad days, they carved the flesh out of banana plant stalks for food. On the worst days, his children ate nothing. “I felt so sorry that I couldn’t give them enough food,” the 25-year-old says, tears running down his face, in a refugee camp in Bangladesh, just across the border from Myanmar. “Everything just got worse and worse. ... Day by day, the pressure was increasing all around us. They used to tell us, ‘This isn’t your land. ... We’ll starve you out’.” First, massacres, rapes and

the wholesale destruction of villages by the Myanmar military in western Rakhine state forced nearly 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh, in reprisal for Rohingya militant attacks on August 25. Now, the food supply appears to be another weapon that’s being used against the dwindling numbers of Rohingya in Myanmar. The accounts of hunger could not be independently confirmed, as Myanmar’s government does not allow reporters into the northern part of Rakhine state, where most of the Rohingya lived. How-

ever, more than a dozen interviews with the most recent refugees show growing desperation, as the noose tightens around their communities in what UN officials have said may be a genocide. The UN and human rights groups such as Amnesty International have also warned of increasing hunger among the Rohingya in areas where conflict and displacement have been most rampant. Repeated calls to Myanmar’s military weren’t answered, but the Myanmar government denies ethnic cleansing and says it is battling terrorists. - AP

Tarantino apologises Quentin Tarantino has apologised to Roman Polanski rape victim Samantha Geimer for comments he made in a 2003 radio interview with Howard Stern. In a statement to IndieWire, Tarantino called his comments about Geimer “cavalier” and said he was “ignorant and insensitive and, above all, incorrect”. In the recently resurfaced interview with Stern, Tarantino said that Geimer “wanted to have it” and that she was “down to party”. “Fifteen years later, I realise how wrong I was,” said Tarantino. “Ms Geimer WAS raped by Roman Polanski. I didn’t take Ms Geimer’s feelings into consideration and for that I am truly sorry.”

More remains found in probe Police in Toronto have recovered the remains of at least six people from planters on a property connected to alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur, officials said yesterday. Detective Sgt. Hank Idsinga said the remains, found on property McArthur used as storage in exchange for doing the landscaping, included some from one of the five men McArthur is already charged with killing, Andrew Kinsman. McArthur was arrested January 18 and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the disappearances of Kinsman and Selim Esen, two men last seen in the Gay Village district of Toronto. Not long after that, he was charged with the murders of three more men and police said they were on a wide search for other possible victims. Police expect to file more charges. Investigators are still working to determine who the other alleged victims are from the property. They haven’t determined yet if they are the same men or other people. Bush said he believes Russia meddled in the 2016 US presidential election, departing from President Donald Trump who has been skeptical of intelligence agencies’ findings that the Kremlin had interfered to help him win. “There’s pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled. After a Waitangi weekend break, tennis returns to the courts of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre this weekend for the penultimate round of Mid Canterbury Open Grade Interclub. Current competition leaders,

Hampstead – who are looking to win both the first and second rounds of the competition – hold a two-point advantage over Methven on top of the points ladder and victory for them this week against Fairton will put them in a strong position going into next weekend’s final round.

In Fairton though, Hampstead face a formidable foe with the side led by Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard – a strong on-court combination which will prove a tough challenge for Aidan Mitchell and the rest of the Hampstead side. Methven will be out to claim

maximum points in their match today against Southern. Should both Hampstead and Methven win this weekend then a grandstand finish to the season will unfold next week when the two sides clash in the final round – with the winner claiming overall honours.

Today’s other match sees Allenton and Tinwald squaring off. In A Reserve action today Allenton takes on the Hampstead Aces, the two Methven sides, Gold and Diamonds will do battle and Southern Wakanui and Hampstead Hillbillies will play the other match.

Veteran chases fourth title By Dale BuDge The New Zealand Grand Prix has a long and storied history with many of the best drivers the world has ever seen winning the annual race. At its peak during the Tasman Series in the 1960s and 1970s, legends of the sport such as Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Keke Rosberg wowed the crowds. Much has changed since. The big names stopped coming and public interest dropped. Yet two constants remained: the famous trophy is still up for grabs each summer and legendary Kiwi racer Kenny Smith is still competing. Smith, who began motor racing as a 16-year-old in 1958, raced against the best the world has ever seen and picked up three Grand Prix wins over the years – his first in 1976. He walked among the legends and went toe-to-toe with the best we’ve ever produced – Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon and Denny Hulme. This weekend, as the 76-yearold lines up for a staggering 47th crack at the country’s premier motor race in what is his 60th consecutive summer of racing, he reflects on his first Grand Prix back in 1964 when he lined up at Pukekohe in a 1500cc Lotus 22. “It was a thrill to do it because it was amongst some of the greatest drivers of all time,” Smith said.

“It was quite a thrill to drive even though we only had small cars (Formula Junior as opposed to Formula 1 cars) compared to them. It was an honour to be among those guys. “You could talk to Graham Hill

just like anybody. Same with Jim Clark or Stirling Moss. “All those guys were just ordinary people. “They weren’t full of their own shit – they were just ordinary people.”

Smith was good friends with McLaren, who died six years later in a practice crash at Goodwood in England. Others like Clark would also perish in competition. Back home Smith continued to race and got his first Grand Prix win in 1976 in a Lola T332 Chevrolet Formula 5000 car at Pukekohe. “The 76 one was the greatest memory of all-time,” he said. “It is something you could never forget. “It is just so good to be on a trophy with all of those great names.” He would go on to win five Gold Star Drivers Award in the 1975–1976, 1983–1984, 1984– 1985, 1986–1987 and 1989–1990 seasons and two more Grands Prix in 1990 and 2004. The best compliment I can pay him is this. It isn’t his pure speed, his race craft or even his longevity that sets Kenny Smith apart. The one thing I’ve noticed more than anything is how respected he is and how much he’s loved by all. He is literally old enough to be many of his rivals’ grandfathers yet he can relate to those kids and interact with them as well as anyone. He almost certainly won’t be adding a fourth New Zealand Grand Prix to his trophy cabinet this weekend, but there is no doubt that Kenny Smith is an absolute champion. - NZME

Team NZ sail off with top honour Team New Zealand have been awarded the premier national sporting award at the 55th Halberg Awards. The America’s Cup-winning side included Kerikeri sailors Blair Tuke and Andy Malony. They were named the Team of the Year before being presented the supreme Halberg Award by Halberg Disability Sport Foundation patron, Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy. Team New Zealand’s victory in Bermuda over Oracle marked the end of a redemption mission after succumbing to the American outfit in 2013. Maloney and Tuke both played big roles in the successful regatta. Tuke held a unique dual role combining the responsibilities of cyclor and trimmer while Maloney was a cog in the superb cyclor peloton. McLaren interested in Hamilton F1 reunion By PhiliP Duncan McLaren are keeping a close eye on Lewis Hamilton’s contract developments at Mercedes and chief executive Zak Brown admits that he would be interested in offering the four-time champion a second chapter at the British team. Hamilton, 33, is entering the final year of his Mercedes’ deal, and while Formula One’s reigning constructors’ champions are confident he will re-sign for a further two seasons, the lack of any formal announcement has put McLaren on alert. Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff recently said talks over a new contract are “positive and ongoing”. Hamilton, who joined Mercedes from McLaren in 2013, has a romantic history with the British team. He signed for them when he was only 13 before winning his maiden world championship in 2008. A decade on, Hamilton’s triumph remains the last time a driver won the title in a McLaren car. The team from Woking have endured a torrid recent few years, but they hope to be fighting towards the front in 2018 after dropping beleaguered engine partner Honda and teaming up with Renault. “If anyone got Lewis, it would be great for the team,” American Brown said. “He has a great history here at McLaren, and he is very friendly with the shareholders. “We are happy with our lineup, but if something happened to take one or two of those drivers out of play, then of course someone like Lewis has his history here. “He is an unbelievable driver. There isn’t a team in the pit lane that would not be interested in having Lewis drive for them, us included.” Fernando Alonso quit McLaren after just one season back in 2006 following his acrimonious fallout with Hamilton and the team’s former overlord Ron Dennis. But the two-time world champion, now in the fourth year of his second spell at McLaren, would be open to having Hamilton race alongside him. “Fernando would race anybody,” Brown said. “I have never had a single conversation with Fernando about anything other than himself. “Fernando would have anyone as his team-mate.” Hamilton is due to take the wraps off his new Mercedes at Silverstone later this month before opening the defence of his title on March 25 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. - PA

In brief No evidence of fixing The International Cricket Council has found no evidence of any games being corrupted following its investigation into allegations of match-fixing made by The Sun newspaper. The British newspaper ran several reports based on a four-month undercover investigation into bookmakers from India. It was reported that two bookmakers claimed they could fix games in the Big Bash, the IPL and the Ashes. The sport’s governing body has found no proof of wrongdoing on the part of players or officials. - PA

Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup match against North Otago on the Ashburton Oval may be the big talking point of this weekend’s local cricket action – but the race for the Muirhead Rosebowl continues around the regions as well with teams still jostling for ascendency. The absence of a few players from various sides due to representative duties will create a little more interest to the whole affair with both matches likely to

produce intriguing contests. In-form Lauriston will have to do battle without star players Alex Hooper and Nick Gilbert this week. But they do have the necessary skills among their remaining players to hold off the challenge of a relatively unscathed Tech Stags side who hit some good form last week, especially with the bat. For Lauriston, their usual soldiers Scott Morgan and the likes of Bevan Richen will have to hold off the strong Tech bowl-

ers to get the runs on the board, with guys like Scott Punselie and Kody Stuthridge causing plenty of trouble with the ball in hand at the moment. Whoever wins that battle could well lead their team to success. In the other match, Allenton will be out to right the wrongs of their Pritchard Shield efforts when they trek out to Coldstream to take them on. Allenton’s second half of the season thus far has been pretty woeful and they’ll be keen to bury the memory of their heavy

Camps ‘unavoidable’ Steve Hansen says Hurricanes’ complaints about All Black camps are on the money but has called for the Super teams to get on with the job. Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd has led the public revolt, describing the forced removal of All Blacks during game weeks as short of high performance standards, particularly as those players were central to any team’s planning. New Chiefs coach Colin Cooper has taken a contrary view, and said “it is what it is”. The All Blacks will take players away from their Super Rugby franchises for at least four midweek camps but they will be available for the matches. There will be a real touch of teal to Methven tomorrow when the Hororata Trotting Club rolls into town. The once-a-year club will hold their annual meeting on the Mt Harding course tomorow afternoon with big fields the order of the day – but also a special twist to the racing action as well that will see racegoers engaged for a good cause. Harness Racing New Zealand are currently running a fundraising promotion dubbed The Teal Pants Campaign, in which all female drivers in New Zealand, for six weeks, are wearing teal driving pants to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

Funds are being raised for the promotion with each victory that the teal pants are carried to success in. Harness Racing New Zealand is putting up $200 for each victory, while Woodlands Stud are pledging $100 for each win. Clubs are buying into the promotion as well by donating $100 for each win at their meeting. The Teal Pants movement initially started in Victoria in 2014 following the loss of Duncan McPherson’s wife Lyn in 2010 to ovarian cancer. It then was held throughout Australia last season. Determined to ensure her passing was not in vain, McPherson came up with the concept to raise awareness, as the symp-

toms of ovarian cancer often are not obvious. It is a silent killer. He found that often partners of the women taken by ovarian cancer were left lost and without support also, which meant he was often on the other end of a cold call from men who just needed to talk to someone who could understand and help them cope. McPherson has focused a lot of the awareness campaign around targeting men to get them to support their female partners in getting tested early if something doesn’t seem right. But the main message around the Teal Pants Campaign in both Australia and New Zealand is the dire need for better awareness, services and early detection.

Setback for Cutadeel Promising two-year-old Cutadeel has suffered a serious setback and will not race again this season. The gelding became the first winner for his sire, multiple Group One winner Dundeel, when beating his stablemate Thomas Aquinas on debut. “He cracked his pelvis in his next gallop after he won at Tauranga,” co-trainer Murray Baker said. “He’ll be out for six months.” - NZME

Cowan battling old rival Former jockeys turned trainers Lance Robinson and Alex “Snooky” Cowan are going into today’s Riccarton meeting with contrasting confidence in their prospects in the main events. Robinson is thrilled with his last-start winner Boots ‘N’ All in the Daphne Bannan Memorial Open (1800m), while Cowan is looking for better manners from his Group One winner Signify in the Rae Racing Prom Queen Open (1000m). Boots ‘N’ All credited Riccarton-based Robinson with his first stakes win as a trainer when he proved too strong for Son Of Maher and Gallant Boy in the Listed Speight’s Timaru Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton a fortnight ago. “He’s thrived since the race and he really deserved that win,” Robinson said. “The only worry is that he has climbed up in the weights so quickly and he’s only won one Listed race. “It makes it tough for a horse like Boots “N’ All who is just reaching his peak.

“He’s only a young horse and I’ve been careful to place him in the right grades.” Boots ‘N’ All was ridden for the first time in the Timaru Stakes by Jacob Lowry, who impressed Robinson and will again be aboard on Saturday. “After this one I’ll keep him ticking over for the Easter Cup at Riccarton then tip him out and hopefully come back for the Coupland’s Mile,” Robinson said. While Robinson has a programme in order for Boots ‘N’ All, Cowan isn’t confident to look beyond today’s 1000-metre race with Signify, though he would love to get him back to Trentham on March 17 for the Listed Te Akau Racing Lightning Handicap (1200m), which he won last year. Signify has had to settle for six placings in his seven starts this season and has not helped his chances of further success through a tendency to pull hard in his races. “He’s got it into his head and

Jacob Lowry even when I ride him in his trackwork he’s so keen. “He just won’t settle,” Cowan said. In the open sprint at Wingatui last Saturday, he refused to settle for rider Racha Cuneen, who had won last year’s Gr.1 J.R. & N. Berkett Telegraph (1200m) on him. “He just over-raced fiercely at the back of the field and Racha said if he’d let him go he’d have

taken off around the field,” Cowan said. “You can’t win races like that so I’ve tried changing a few things and decided to back him up and put an apprentice on. “Tina Comignaghi will ride him and get two kilos off. “He’s gone up a kilo to 61 this week so he’ll need the allowance. “I’ll be telling her ‘you’re babysitting and don’t pull him back, just nurse him’. “I want her to ride him where he lands and just let him roll along. “Hopefully with some leaders in the race there will be a bit of pace on and he might settle better. “I’d like to see him get to the line without over-racing.” As part of Signify’s preparation this week, Cowan has him hacking around the back paddock at his property rather than at the Ashburton track. “We’ll find out on Saturday whether it’s helped,” he said. - NZME

No Lazarus sibling Dunedin breeder Gavin Chin is facing the reality that there will be no little Lazarus running around next spring. Chin received the devastating news last week that his mare Bethany, the dam of Lazarus, had failed to get in foal this season. The Christian Cullen mare had been mated to Bettor’s Delight in the hope she would produce a full sibling to superstar Lazarus. The news is a blow to yearling sales buyers who could have had the opportunity to bid on a full brother to Lazarus. - NZHN

You’ll be a one-person sports team, among an editorial team of experienced journalists, covering everything from representative rugby and netball, right down to primary school’s football and hockey. The Guardian is a progressive, six-day a week newspaper in the heart of a sporting strong hold. Our sports coverage is one of the cornerstones of the business. Our readers are passionate players, watchers and arm-chair critics who love nothing more than reading a good yarn about local sporting stars or teams. Sport takes place at any time on any given day, so you’ll be flexible with your working hours and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the sports coverage that the paper requires. You’ll also get the opportunity to swing one of our cameras around from time to time too. Weekend work in this role is a given, but that does mean that you’ll get time off during the week to enjoy everything our district has to offer.
