BANK HEIST By Matt Markham

Wakanui farmer, Eric Watson with David Weith of Bayer Crop Science.

An Ashburton man will appear in the Christchurch District Court this morning charged with robbery following a mid-morning bank heist yesterday in the heart of the Ashburton CBD. The busy stretch of the town’s business district was abuzz with police throughout most of the day following the incident, with the bank closed for the remainder of the day and a security guard stationed outside the front door while police worked inside. The 32-year-old was arrested by Ashburton Police in connection with a robbery at the ASB Bank on Burnett Street around 10.10am yesterday. Detective senior sergeant Richard Quested said in a statement that the man was located with the assistance of the public. Quested also confirmed that the man entered the bank and gave the teller a note demanding money. “He was handed an undisclosed amount of cash and left shortly after,” Quested said. “Police were called to the scene and apprehended the man a short time later.” As the matter is now before the courts, Police stated they would not be commenting further on the incident and they also advised that they would not be providing the amount of money taken in the robbery. Staff members of the ASB Bank were not physically harmed in the incident and were being supported by their employers as well as being given access to Victim Support. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the robbery.

World record again By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

When you’ve set consecutive world records and helped put Mid Canterbury on the arable farming map, there’s arguably not a whole lot more you can achieve. But in the case of local farmer, Eric Watson, there’s always room for improvement. Watson, who farms 490 hectares – all arable, at Wakanui broke new ground, albeit his own ground, when it was confirmed this week that for the second consecutive time he’d claimed the Guinness World Record for the highest wheat yield. His crop netted a quite remarkable 17.398 tonnes per hectare of wheat – a significant improvement on when he last set the record

back in 2017 with a return of 16.791 tonnes per hectare. To put that into a little context, irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand, on average, produce around 12 tonnes per hectare, making Watson’s result quite staggering. Yet in typically Kiwi farmer fashion, Watson was taking a humble approach in his celebrations. “It’s wonderful to have achieved it again, but more for the positive impact it has on the arable farming sector, we often don’t get the credit we deserve,” he said. After setting his first record in 2017, Watson – who has farmed the Wakanui block for 27 years – said making improvements across the board and introducing new innovations

Outstanding Results Outstanding in Our Community

to keep up-to-date with the latest technology available to farmers undoubtedly helped set a new mark this year. “We were thrilled with the result in 2017, but we also saw ways in which we could make improvements and achieve an even higher yield. “I would say that one of the biggest changes was the switch to liquid nitrogen, which allowed a much more even spread across the crop. We use a 48 metre spray boom which allows for a better coverage.

Muller a hit at public meeting Back

on top of the world

By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

It might have been a day affected by controversy for National party leader Todd Muller on Wednesday, but that did nothing to stop him turning on the charm in front a large crowd at a public meeting at the Hotel Ashburton. It was apparent the crowd of several hundred were loyal to the National Party, with plenty of laughs, cheers and claps as Muller worked his way through a speech and questions from the crowd. Muller began with talking about the announcement of the party’s commitment to building a four-lane highway between Ashburton and Christchurch. That was followed by discussion on how a National-led Government would lead the country through the economic recovery of Covid-19. He admitted they would borrow more money, but that they could be trusted to run the economy well out of crisis, pointing out their success following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. He then took questions from the floor, with the first coming from Carol Jopson in regards to the recent health and disability services review, and what he thought in regards to the community health section of the review. He said he would take any concerns to their health spokesperson Michael Woodhouse as he had not had the time to pore through the review, but instead asked what she thought was the

PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 080720-HM-0129 important parts of the review that needed attention. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown also spoke, first welcoming Muller to the town and thanking him as mayor for the commitment to the four-lane highway. He first asked him what his plans were for immigration, saying it would be good to see some of the 40,000 people that have reportedly lost their jobs due to Covid-19 coming to the Ashbur-

ton District to work. “There are dairy farmers that need workers to milk the cows and contractors that need workers to drive the tractors to plant the crops,” he said. He also asked what Muller would do in regards to water reforms that were first proposed by the Government last year. Muller said it was important to focus on New Zealanders first for now with jobs, but that there

would be a bridge to cross once the borders re-opened with getting foreign nationals back into the country and working on farms. He also spoke about the water reforms, saying they needed a more balanced approach between introducing limits, but ones that still supported the economy and were introduced in a staggered approach to make them viable.

Scenic highway speed changes up for debate By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Mt Somers residents will have a chance to change the speed of traffic passing their village along the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road. The need for a change to the speed limit on that stretch of road was raised at a submissions hearing on a review of speeds on roads around the Ashburton District. The council came up with a

CONTACT US 03 308 6733 Countdown Complex, East St, Ashburton

plan and almost 250 people wanted to have their say on the changes proposed. While the Mt Somers stretch of the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road was not on the list for change, Mt Somers Citizens Association member Sarah Stanaway raised the safety issue high speeds on that road caused as part of her submission on other speed changes in the village.

With three turning options into the village from what is also known as the scenic highway, Stanaway said there were serious safety concerns because the highway was an open speed zone. She suggested the speed limit should be reduced to 80km/h. Stanaway spoke as an individual, rather than as a representative of the village’s citizens’ association, but her suggestion struck a

chord with councillors. As they signed off a raft of speed limit changes at yesterday’s Infrastructure services committee, they agreed to talk options with the citizens’ association and to consult with NZ Transport Agency, police, AA and other road users before a decision was made. Until that is done, the speed limit through the Mt Somers Village will remain at 100km/h.

From P1 “Because of the high wheat yields we can grow on our farm we are pleased if we see yields increase year-on-year by 100-200kg/ha. So to beat my last crop by almost 600kg/ ha exceeded even my hopes,” Watson said. Planted in April 2019 and harvested on February 17, 2020, the wheat variety is Kerrin, and it will likely be used for feeding New Zealand’s beef or dairy herd. Watson knows the lay of his land better than he knows the back of his own hand and said the Wakanui area provided the perfect soil for producing good crops consistently but also added that a really strong growing season, thanks to the weather, without a doubt played a big part in the new record. “Everyone knows it was a good growing year, it wasn’t too hot – but really just the perfect conditions, it doesn’t seem to get too wet down here either but you do get some good moisture from the evening dew on those cooler nights which certainly helps.” With two records next to his name, you could forgive Watson for being happy to rest on his laurels this growing season. But the challenge of constantly bettering his results and improving the overall results is too important. “You can always improve on things, there are new advancements happening all the time and we’re always looking for them if they’ll help the end result.”

Council caution over heli-pad By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Survival rates could be improved for patients transferring from Ashburton to Christchurch Hospital when the Ashburton Domain heli-pad gains approval for instrument, rather than just visual flight rules. The change will mean weather will no longer be a factor in patient transfers. Currently between 10 and 20 per cent of up to 80 patient transfers each year are delayed or do not occur because of poor weather conditions. Matthew Boulcott from GCH Aviation took the case for the helipad to be approved for instrument flying to the Ashburton District Council’s audit, risk and finance committee on Thursday, but councillors were initially cautious about the new designation because of the current flight restriction area for drones would need to be extended. Currently the hospital’s heli-pad is categorised as non-established because it is not published in the New Zealand Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). While it has traditionally only been used by rescue helicopters, Boulcott said there was no process in place to prohibit private helicopters from using the pad. Publishing the helipad in the AIP, however, would allow the hospital and the council to define its use as for emergency hel-

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

While many people might want crop residue burn-offs on the banned list, they remain a valuable management tool for cropping farmers in the Ashburton District, councillor Angus McKay says. In its submission on the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality, the Ashburton District has made a point of listing issues that were specific to the district. And that was important, McKay said, because one plan for

icopters only. Currently there is a four kilometre restriction zone around Ashburton Airfield and drone operators wishing to fly vehicles outside of shield operation thresholds (within 100 metres of and below the top of a building, tower or trees), have to seek approval from the airport operator. When the heli-pad is listed as approved for instrument flying, it will incur its own four kilometre restricted operation area. This will overlap the airfield zone but will extend into Tinwald and well to the west and north of Ashburton.

The heli-pad will be operated by Ashburton Hospital and requests for drone flights within the zone will have to be approved by them. If approval was given the drone operator would file a flight plan which would then be filed and would be available to any aircraft flying in the area. Initially the plan would have involved trimming several very tall trees along Walnut Avenue, but Boulcott said flight paths may be modified to avoid this. Councillors were not happy about the restrictions the new status of the heli-pad would

have on drone activity but were satisfied the shielded operation option would still be available. In seeking the change, Boulcott said Ashburton would be coming into line with many smaller towns that used the emergency helicopter service. It would also have the benefit of protecting the heli-pad from private use. They agreed to allow the instrument flight rule to be implemented and for the helipad to be published in the AIP, but wanted more information before the request was signed off at the next council meeting.

Council supports retaining crop burn-offs By Sue Newman

the whole country would simply not work. And that was particularly true when it came to crop burn-offs, he said. The council’s submission points out that stubble burning is an important process for the district’s cropping farmers, but McKay wanted it made clear that the alternatives such as increased use of herbicides and pesticides would be far more damaging to the environment. “We’re trying to get away from this and to farm in a clean and

neutral way, but without burning we’ll need to use more herbicide and pesticides and people making decisions in Wellington need to be aware of this,” he said. There were far fewer stubble fires now than in the past as a lot of the crop residue that was once burned is now baled as stockfood, McKay said. “But there are some crops where to get a paddock back into production you are forced into a burning regime.” While he accepted there were breaches of the rules, the majority

of farmers understood those rules and worked within them, he said. Talking to mayors in other parts of New Zealand, Ashburton mayor Neil Brown said some wanted stubble burning banned completely, and that was why the air quality plan could not be a one size fits all document. The current air plan provided controls over stubble burning and the council submitted that it would be concerned if controls in the new standards were more restirictive than those in the current Canterbury Regional Air Plan.

Carol Johns is absolute proof that if you wait long enough for something, your time will come. For years she’s been keen to run a large scale street day in Ashburton and when Boulevard Day was cancelled this year, she saw her opportunity and a replacement event, Mardi Gras was born. “With Bookarama still running it was a no-brainer to do something,” she said. Now, with just weeks until the September 28 street day, Johns knows she’s got her work cut out to fill East Street with stalls, but with several years’ experience behind her running the town’s other big street event, Waitangi on East, she has a notebook full of names and phone numbers. When Boulevard Day was cancelled because of concerns over the impact Covid-19 might have on both stallholder and public support, Johns said she felt she was given an opportunity she couldn’t ignore. “I’ve been inundated with support and a lot of people are saying they’ve been left with stock from Covid-19 so I see this as a way to bring a bit of life and colour back into Ashburton,” she said. Retailers have been contacted and through various Facebook pages stallholders from Otago to the top of Canterbury have been invited. And the answer she’s most commonly getting is – “yes, please”. Johns is now lining up entertainment for the day and plans to have Madi Gras set up on East Street from Havelock to Moore Street from 9am until around 4.30pm. She’s contacted South Canterbury bus companies hoping they’ll use the opportunity of South Canterbury Anniversary Day to bring groups of South Cantabrians to town for the day.

The second is a man in his 30s who arrived in New Zealand on July 4 from Italy and who is at the Commodore Hotel in Christchurch. The third is a man in his 20s who arrived in New Zealand on July 3 from India, and has also been at the Stamford Plaza. In a statement, the Health Ministry said it had now been 69 days since the last case of Covid-19 was acquired locally from an unknown source. The total number of confirmed cases of the coronavrius in New Zealand is now 1190.

Ashburton Back to Basics Expo organiser Julia Crosson has moved this year’s expo out of the New Life Church hall and into cyberspace instead. Scheduled for July 18, Crosson and her co-hosts Kate White for the morning and Brad Raukawa in the afternoon, will start broad casting via their Facebook page at 10am and continue through till around 2.30 in the afternoon. Admittedly Crosson is light on broadcasting experience but heavy on enthusiasm and knowledge, however she claimed that makes her look forward to the challenge all the more. “I want it to be a live and free-flowing programme, a bit like listening to the radio really.”

Crosson has drawn together a collection of interesting guests to join her in the studio. Familiar faces from past expos like the Timebank crew, Simply Eco, Lesley Ottey from Eco Educate, James Lamb from Civil Defence and Sheryl Stivens, will all share their tips and tricks with viewers. She is not worried if they get 60 or 600 people watching, this is all about inspiring people and passing on the knowledge that these guys have amassed over the years, she said. “In-between the guest speakers there will be promotions, prizes and giveaways. Plus everybody is welcome to ask questions via the Facebook comments section.” Covid-19 lockdown proved that some of the things that we

thought nice to do if we had time, like gardening, preserving or growing our own food are now looked at in a different light. “Nice has been turned into a necessity, thanks to lockdown,” she said. “You can learn from books, magazines or from YouTube, but if we can combine actual working knowledge with local connections it will help build resilience.” “If we start small, doing backyard things, like making our own cleaning products, growing food and avoiding plastic packaging, over time the message will spread and big changes will happen.” Raw to finished is something Crosson is hot on. “Imagine if all the trees were,

grown, milled and made into furniture here and then exported,” she asked. Crosson said she made the call to change the format back when the lockdown situation was still looking uncertain and wants to stress it was not a kneejerk reaction to go online. “I thought I could either forge ahead with the normal expo organisation and hope for the best, or make the online decision early and stick with it.” Now in its seventh year, moving the expo to cyber-space could also be seen as keeping in line with traditional farming practices, and leaving the land fallow in a seven-year cycle. “Maybe we are just letting the metaphorical ground rest for 12 months in preparation for the following year.”

Real estate market springing back into life By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton District’s real estate market might not be roaring, but it’s definitely showing plenty of signs of life, says Tammy McDougall. The Harcourts franchise owner said her company was fielding plenty of inquiry, potential buyers were turning out in numbers to open homes and deals were being signed. “It’s not easy, there are no secrets, just hard work,” she said. Prompted by very low interest rates, first home buyers were active in the market and there was keen competition for houses in that bracket. Deals, however were often a little slower to come together because of borrowing requirements by banks, but those buyers were committed to getting on the real estate ladder,

Tammy McDougall McDougall said. Houses in the $350,000 and lower price bracket were hotly sought by first home buyers as they were often competing in

the same market as investors, she said. “It’s tough out there for first home buyers and you can get 10 through at an open home.” Activity was back and in some cases better, than pre-Covid-19, McDougall said. “There is definitely confidence out there but people are still being cautious, cautiously optimistic.” In terms of rentals, the market was tight, McDougall said with multiple applicants for any property advertised. House price monitor QV shows house prices in the Ashburton District as lifting by 6 per cent over the past year and 2.2 per cent over the past three months to now sit at an average selling price of $380,087. Price movement has been strongest in the south of the

South Island over the past year with Clutha, where the average selling price is $279,599, leading growth at 22.5 per cent. The cheapest place in the South Island to buy a home is currently the Buller District, $207,752 and Grey District, $229,443. Buller now has the lowest selling price in New Zealand. Queenstown Lakes remains the most expensive at $1,192,613 million. The average selling price in that district, however, has dropped 1.5 per cent over the past three months Eleven parts of Auckland now have homes with a selling price of more than $1 million, with the city’s east the most expensive at $1.614 million. Waitomo is the cheapest place in the North Island to buy at an average selling price of $267,759.

Winston Peters successfully had keyhole surgery yesterday after visiting his doctor with food poisoning symptoms and dehydration earlier this week. The deputy prime minister and New Zealand First leader is taking medical leave this week and had been advised to undergo a surgical procedure whilst Parliament is in recess. Peters said he remains confident of a quick return to work – as well as being fighting fit for the election campaign, which is typically physically gruelling. This means New Zealand First will combine its campaign launch with the Party AGM on Sunday, July 19.

Accidental reopening The Auckland supermarket where an escapee from managed isolation went shopping accidentally reopened early the day after he visited. A 32-year-old man left his isolation hotel and went shopping at the Victoria St Countdown on Tuesday night, and ended up testing positive for Covid-19 the next morning. In a statement, a Countdown spokesperson said police visited the store just before closing on Tuesday night. The store’s CCTV footage was reviewed and staff wiped down surfaces as a precaution. The store was not aware the man was Covid-19 positive and it had not been asked or required to close the store at the time. The next morning, the store – which opens at 7am – was shut at 8.15am for a deep clean and was planned to be closed all day, as per normal procedure.

Escapee caught Convicted murderer Haami Hanara, who escaped from a Youth Justice Facility in Auckland at the weekend, has been caught by police after a foot chase in Wiri yesterday. Hanara, 16, was serving a sentence of life imprisonment for murder, when he escaped from Korowai Manaaki on Saturday night. Police said he was spotted in the Auckland suburb of Wiri and was taken into custody “following a short foot pursuit”. Hanara will face a charge of escaping from lawful custody and will appear in the Manukau Youth Court on Friday. He escaped with 17-yearold Sean Ratu. Police are still searching for him. Ratu was on remand in the facility for “very serious offences”.

Coffee catch-up on the agenda again By Heather Mackenzie

heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

It’s been a long time between coffees for the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club blokes. Normally, the lively group met every Tuesday morning to enjoy a catch-up over a cuppa. But then Covid-19 ploughed its way into New Zealand, confining club members to barracks for 12 weeks. Deciding enough was enough past president John Hall said the decision to resume the get-together was made. It was certainly the right one as 19 blokes came through the door armed with smiles and home baking created by unseen wives. One of the early arrivals noted his wife had shooed him out the door. “She was glad to get rid of me for a couple of hours,” he said. The main topic of conversation was obviously the weather, which then gave way to political chit-chat and how everybody coped during lockdown. The feasibility of getting rid of the Covid-19 virus was also a hot topic. The communal feeling was summed up nicely by

Don Kennedy. “They will never get rid of it, it’s going to be smouldering way behind the trees for years.” When asked if he was pleased to be back, Kennedy replied ‘Oh, gosh, yes.’ He said for most of them life under lockdown didn’t change all that much, apart from the all-important social contact coming to an abrupt halt. “I enjoy coming here and putting the world to rights, and I’ve missed it.” The group may meet under the vintage machinery umbrella, but Kennedy said they all have cross-over interests too. “Sometimes we hardly talk about tractors at all, it’s more about caravanning and where we have been lately.” The group is made up of all men, however Kennedy was quick to point out that is more of a happy accident than anything planned. This ‘happy accident’ serves a greater purpose than simply comparing rainfall measurements and primo camping spots, Kennedy said the group provides a safe place to talk about their health issues and anything else that could be bothering them.

Bollards going up around Waireka croquet club By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Bollards are being installed at the Waireka Croquet Club section of the Ashburton Domain to hopefully prevent any further vandalism to the greens and halt unauthorised vehicle access to other areas of the domain. Ashburton District Council group manager service delivery Neil McCann said bollards are being installed to protect the general area from damage that has occurred from time-to-time, including a recent incident of vandalism in May. “It will generally assist restricting unauthorised vehicle access to other areas of the domain and ties in with the style of low barrier used elsewhere in the Domain,” he said. “At present there are no plans for additional fencing/bollards but we will keep this under review in line with the Draft

Ashburton Domain Development Plan and the management plan for the domain.” Waireka Croquet Club spokesperson Audrey Leath said they were hopeful the bollards would prevent any further damage, with repairs to the greens a long process. The damage to the greens has been filled in and re-sown, with a date not yet set for the restart of the croquet season. The clubrooms had also been broken into in the days after the damage to the greens was first reported, compounding issues for the club. A police spokesperson said there were no lines of enquiry identified and that the case had been filed, pending any new information being received. If anyone does have information which could help enquiries, they should call 105 and quote file number 200512/9870.

Russia loses UN resolution The UN Security Council has overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution that would have cut back the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria’s mainly rebel-held north-west to just one crossing point from Turkey. Western countries that voted against the resolution have insisted on keeping the two current crossings from Turkey, with strong backing from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and humanitarian groups. UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock has called the two crossings from Turkey “a lifeline for millions of civilians whom the UN cannot reach by other means”. The Russian resolution needed a minimum of nine “yes” votes in the 15-member council for approval, but Moscow got support from only three other countries – China, Vietnam and South Africa. Its failure to get the nine votes meant the US, UK and France didn’t need to consider using their veto. Those three permanent council members voted against the resolution along with Germany, Belgium, Estonia and the Dominican Republic. Four countries abstained – Tunisia, Niger, Indo-

Russia, Syria’s closest ally, circulated the draft resolution after it joined China in vetoing a draft resolution, co-sponsored by Germany and Belgium, to maintain aid deliveries through two border crossing points from Turkey for a year. It received 13 “yes” votes. The current Security Council mandate for UN cross-border aid deliveries expires tomorrow, and Germany and Belgium are expected to circulate a new proposal, likely to authorise the

two current crossings from Turkey for six months. Whether the differences between the five veto-wielding council members can be resolved remained to be seen. Russia has argued that aid should be delivered from within Syria across conflict lines. But the UN and humanitarian groups say aid for 2.8 million needy people in the north-west can’t get in that way. Moutaz Adham, the Syria director for the humanitarian group Oxfam, called the council’s failure to reach agreement

“a devastating blow to the millions of Syrian families who rely on this aid for clean water, food, health care and shelter.” In January, Russia scored a victory for Syria, using its veto threat to force the Security Council to adopt a resolution reducing the number of crossing points for aid deliveries from four to just two, from Turkey to the north-west. It also cut in half the yearlong mandate that had been in place since cross-border deliveries began in 2014 to six months, as Russia insisted.

Bali to reopen after three month lockdown Indonesia’s resort island of Bali reopened after a three-month virus lockdown yesterday, allowing local people and stranded foreign tourists to resume public activities before foreign arrivals resume in September. Normally bustling beaches and streets on the idyllic Southeast Asian island emptied in early April, except for special patrols to ensure health protocols to contain the coronavirus were observed. Authorities restricted public activities, closed the airport and shuttered all shops, bars, sitdown restaurants, public swimming pools and many other places on the island that’s home to more than 4 million people. The local government began lifting the limits yesterday, but tourists will face stringent rules

in hotels, restaurants and on beaches, Bali Gov I Wayan Koster said. Koster told a news conference ahead of the reopening the island will gradually reopen shuttered places to locals and the foreigners stranded there during the outbreak. The island will open to Indonesians from other parts of the country on July 31 and new foreign arrivals on September 11. The government established guidelines for reopening tourist spots and may close certain areas again if infections spike, he said. “The pandemic has hit tourism sector so badly while there is no certainty when it will end,” Koster said. “We have to revive economic activity to prevent Bali from

new social problems due to increasing economic pressures.” Tourism is the main source of income for the island that is mainly Hindu in the mostly Muslim archipelago nation. The famed white-sand beaches and popular shopping areas on the “island of the gods” were deserted almost two decades ago when visitors were scared off by terrorism. The dark cloud of the suicide bombings, that killed 202 mostly foreign tourists in 2002, lingered for years, but the island has worked to overcome that image. More than 5 million foreigners arrived in Bali each year prior to the pandemic, which caused the numbers to dive. The total number of stranded tourists in Bali is not known, but

more than 169,000 travellers came to Bali in March before the island closed its doors, according to government data. The data showed that some 2500 travellers had extended their visas to avoid penalties for overstaying them before Indonesia’s government granted all tourists automatic extensions in late March. The Bali administration data showed the occupancy rate at Bali’s starred hotels plunged to 2.07 per cent in May from 62.5 per cent in December, before the outbreak hit. Queensland closes borders to Victorians Queensland will completely close its border to non-residents from Victoria from midday today. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the change on social media, tweeting: “Given the developing situation in Victoria, Queensland is hardening its border. “From noon, July 10, visitors from Victoria will no longer gain access or be able to quarantine in Queensland. “They will be turned around.” Queensland residents will still be allowed to return from

Victoria, although they have been advised against travelling there. “It is strongly recommended that Queenslanders do not travel to Victoria,” Palaszczuk said. “Queensland residents returning from Victoria will gain access, but they must quarantine in a hotel for 14 days at their expense.” The Government has announced a number of exemptions for people entering the state from Victoria, who will not be required to quarantine: • Essential health workers • People travelling on

health, legal or compassionate grounds • Truck drivers carrying freight, but must renew border pass every 7 days Central Melbourne has began a six-week lockdown due a rise in cases in the city. Tiwai Smelter closure announced Rio Tinto has announced that it will wind down New Zealand Aluminium Smelters, best known as Tiwai Point smelter. In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange, the company said its strategic review had “shown the business is no longer viable given high energy costs and a challenging outlook for the aluminium industry”. The company has given Meridian Energy notice to terminate its power contract, which ends in August next year. It expects the wind-down of operations will be done by then. It said it had had discussions with interested parties but could not secure a power contract that would have kept the smelter competitive and profitable. The smelter’s viability has been questioned for much of the past decade as it grappled with weak metal prices, power costs, and over capacity which has seen smelters closed around the world. It employs about 1000 people directly and creates a further 1600 indirect jobs in Southland. The smelter is owned by Rio Tinto and Japan’s Sumitomo Chemical Co. NZ Aluminium Smelters chief executive Stu Hamilton told

Morning Report they were on a path to winding down operations. “We don’t think there’s a deal that can be done that will deliver competitively-priced power to the smelter which is necessary for it to be sustainable. “We do believe that nothing has been left on the table but if we’re mistaken then the window is still available for a deal to be put on the table but the window for that is closing fast now that we have terminated our electricity contract with Meridian. “We’ve got 1000 Southland people, good Southland people, who have been walking through our gates every day to produce some of the highest purity ... aluminium in the world and it’s extremely disappointing that we couldn’t have achieved an outcome that will let us continue to keep operating. “This is very serious. Terminating the power agreement has never been done before. It means we’re now on a path to winding down operations by August 2021.” Changes in electricity pricing announced by the Electricity Authority were still “too little too late”, he said. Hamilton said they would not

cision, there’s got to be commercial viability, but is there another way of operating Tiwai?” But the region had to plan for what would happen in 12-14 months, he said. “We’ve all got to dig deep here, work together, and reach out to the government where we can, while insulating the impact on our community.” Last year the smelter announced a $46m loss, with Hamilton saying at the time it had been hit by a 15 per cent fall in global prices, but most notably from high power and transmission

be making decisions on jobs until the first half of next year. He did not specify who would pay for the clean-up of the site. Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) chief executive Alf Barrios said the wind-down “will have a significant impact” on workers and the community. “It is not a decision we have made lightly and without significant careful consideration.” Southland District Council mayor Gary Tong hoped there was an opportunity to look at ways of changing Rio Tinto’s mind. “It’s obviously a commercial de-

costs. “No matter how hard or efficiently the team here works, we can’t consistently offset the high price of power and transmission charges we face,” Hamilton said. Recently, there has been even more pressure on aluminium supplies globally with the slow down or collapse of aluminium-intensive industries like car manufacturing, aeroplane and aerospace production, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt told Nine to Noon he’s “absolutely shattered” by the news. “They’re a tough company to deal with, and we expected to have tough negotiations, but we never thought it would come to this. We just can’t believe it. “It’s not just the jobs we’re going to lose, it’s the impact it will have on families, on schools, on the retail sector. It’s huge... It’s just devastating.” Shadbolt said there are very few options for creating something that would have jobs on the scale the smelter had. “It looks pretty bleak at the moment, but we’re a resilient community and we’ll be doing everything possible to look at the options.”

New Zealand’s quicker than expected move down the Covid-19 alert levels has seen house prices hold steady, despite overall growth slowing during the June quarter. The CoreLogic QV House Price Index rose 1.3 per cent in the three months to June, with the average house price rising to $738,018. In the year to March the average was $728,276. QV’s general manager David Nagel said despite the slight cooling, open homes and auctions continued to be well attended and the market was experiencing good competition, particularly from first home buyers. “It’s looking better than a lot of us thought ... the real estate sector’s recorded strong interest from vendors with listings close to normal levels for this time of the year. “Banks are recording good levels of enquiry, so I guess the question

is, is this sustainable?” He said the market’s resilience would partly depend on returning New Zealanders feeding buyer and tenant demand. “That’s a lot of people that have to find somewhere to live ... and makes up significantly for what will be a significant reduction in normal migration numbers ... certainly they’re filling the void at the moment.” Keeping interest rates low, reducing unemployment and keeping Covid-19 out of the country would also play a part. Nagel said June saw year-on-year growth drop slightly to 7.4 per cent compared with the previous month which was 7.7 per cent. “So just seeing some flattening ... there are variations around the country. “What we have seen is 13 of the 16 major urban areas that we monitor showing a reduction in value

growth from the previous month.” However, he said high demand would keep values from falling too far. “There’s a lot of buyers out there, particularly in that entry-level range. There’s a lot of competition between the first home buyers and property investors who are looking to enlarge their portfolio.” He said growth was likely to contract further, with the wage subsidy and many mortgage holidays finishing up before the end of the year. “I think there will be harder times ahead, but the way that we’re heading I don’t think there’s going to be a huge impact on the property market. “Maybe something like 5 or 10 per cent, but to put that in context most properties in the last 12 months have had a gain of 5 to 10 per cent so all we’ll do is lose those gains from the last 12 months.”

Construction sector business confidence slides Businesses remain pessimistic about their future after a sharp fall in trading activity over the June quarter. The Institute of Economic Research’s latest quarterly survey of business opinion showed a net third are reporting a decline in trade since March. Companies are bracing for the economic situation to get worse over the coming months, as a quarter expected to cut staff, with weaker trade activity. More then a third of businesses said they would reduce investment over the next quarter. The institutes’s principal economist, Christina Leung, said the result wasn’t all that surprising given the country spent April and part of

May in Alert Levels 4 and 3. “In the March quarter we saw a sharp decline in business confidence to the extent that for the June quarter we’ve seen some slight improvement. “That’s pretty encouraging, it does suggest some stabilisation in terms of confidence.” Leung said businesses tended to hold back on investment in an election year, but there was heightened caution due to long-term uncertainty about the financial impact of Covid-19. She expected a rebound in trade activity in the coming months but said the appetite among businesses to invest was likely to remain weak. The survey found the construc-

tion sector to be the most downbeat, with a net 75 per cent of building firms expecting a deterioration of economic activity over the coming months. The gloomy outlook was reflected by architects, who have reported a decline in commercial construction projects coming through their offices over the next year. Leung said commercial construction had been facing headwinds even prior to the Covid-19 outbreak in New Zealand as banks tightened up lending to the sector. “With this caution amongst banks in lending in these areas and coupled with businesses being more cautious about investing, that has really impacted on the pipeline of construction activity.”

KODA is continuing the tradition of its performance vRS models in the fourth-generation Octavia. This model is the first from ŠKODA, offered in three different drive systems. In addition to the Octavia vRS versions with either a petrol or a diesel engine, the Octavia vRS iV – the brand’s first vRS plug-in hybrid – is now being launched. Both the 2.0 TSI Octavia vRS and the Octavia vRS iV have an output of 180 kW (245 PS). The 2.0 TDI produces 147 kW (200 PS)

and is the only model in the vRS range to be available with all-wheel drive on request. All three variants feature sporty bodywork detailing including vRS-typical black touches. The interior, with its traditional and dynamic design, is also predominantly black. Since the success story of ŠKODA’s vRS family began in the year 2000 with the first-generation Octavia, the sportiest versions of a variety of the Czech manufacturer’s production models have borne the distinctive abbreviation RS. The letters stand for Rally Sport and are

reminiscent of the ŠKODA 180 RS and 200 RS rally prototypes as well as the success of the ŠKODA 130 RS at the Monte Carlo rally in the 1970s. ŠKODA built more than 17,600 units of the first Octavia vRS featuring a 1.8-litre turbo engine and generating 132 kW. Now, in the fourth generation of the Octavia vRS, customers can opt for one of three drive systems for the first time. With a power output of 180 kW (245 PS), the new Octavia vRS iV with plug-in hybrid drive and 6-speed DSG as well as the Octavia vRS equipped with a 2.0 TSI petrol

engine and a manual 6-speed gearbox or 7-speed DSG are each on a par. The 2.0 TDI delivers 147 kW (200 PS); it is always coupled with a 7-speed DSG, and all-wheel drive is an optional extra. The control electronics of the optional all‑wheel drive react to changing driving conditions within a fraction of a second and support the driving dynamics, for example when cornering fast. Here, the system transfers part of the driving torque to the opposite wheel when the load on the inner wheel is reduced, and maintains traction.

uilding on the success of Bentley’s strongest ever portfolio of luxury grand tourers, a suite of new features is today being unveiled that will allow customers even greater choice when specifying their Flying Spur, with new luxury options and contemporary alternatives. The Flying Spur can now be configured to include a four seat configuration, semi-aniline leather, hand cross stitching (consuming 115m of special thread equal to the height of Big Ben), veneered inserts for the rear doors and electrically operated picnic tables. These options are joined by two new technical finishes – carbon fibre and Côtes de Genève – and a newly designed steering wheel with increased safety functionality. To the exterior, three new paint colours are introduced along with full access to the Bentley Mulliner palette of satin and pearlescent options, further enhanced by new wheel finishes and the option of full chrome front matrix grilles. The new four-seat configuration benefits from a long-through console extending from the front console to the rear. The four-seat configuration makes the ultimate statement in design, comfort and luxury. The console includes a new housing for the 5” touchscreen remote, twin

cup holders and extra stowage. The rear armrest includes a bright metal finisher and hides two USB ports and a 12v power socket. The armrest can be heated, with the option of a wireless charging point. Hand cross stitch showcases the attention to detail and skill of those working at the Bentley factory in Crewe. The process takes 18 hours for one craftsperson and requires 11,100 hand sewn stitches to be made throughout the cabin. The unique thread has been designed to be extremely durable and uses special dyes to maintain its colour to last for the lifespan of the vehicle. With semi-aniline leather not only are there benefits in a softer, more plush feeling leather but the reduced finish thickness means fewer processing treatments are required, improving sustainability. The leather is specifically used for seat inserts and has a more natural aspect bringing out the grain of the material. It is also more breathable due to the reduced thickness and is especially beneficial in hotter climates. Electrically operated picnic tables mounted in the rear of the front seat can be deployed with a single press of a button. The veneer covered table lowers, self-lev-

els and reveals a leather trimmed surface with a recess for a pen or stylus. Holding the button down the table elegantly returns to its home position. Rear door veneer inserts complementing the picnic tables can be specified to accentuate the flowing styling lines from the front to rear cabin including the rear occupants in the ambience and design of the interior. A new style steering wheel is launched as standard, with a revised shape and profile. The new wheel includes capacitive sensing throughout the wheel rim, allowing the steering wheel to detect when it is being held – a vital new safety measure for the car’s semi-autonomous Driver Assistance Systems, where new legislation stipulates that drivers must keep in contact with the wheel at all times when the car is moving. Bentleys designers also took this opportunity to revise the colour split of the steering wheel, added a jewelled bezel at the base of the vertical spoke which themselves have been reshaped. Two new technical finishes in lieu of contemporary wood veneers are now available around the cabin of the Flying Spur, complementing its performance and technology. A high gloss carbon fibre technical finish can be chosen, providing a seamless geometric surface, flowing

around the cockpit from one door to the other Similarly, the stunning Côtes de Genève finish, inspired by the precision-machined dust-catching treatment used by the finest watches, is now available to complete the centre console as per the Flying Spur’s Continental GT cousin. The Côtes de Genève technical finish is machined into aluminum just 0.6 mm thick, with the cutter moving from side to side to create a linear pattern. Each row is 5 mm wide and machined at an angle to give a truly three-dimensional finish, with each pass of the machine making a minute step of 0.5 mm. Along with three new paint colours, Viridian, Patina and Snow Quartz, and in response to customer feedback, the main radiator grille matrix can now be specified so that all front grille areas can be selected with a bright chrome finish. When specifying the Blackline Specification, which replaces all exterior bright chrome with gloss black versions, over 75 per cent of Continental GT customers select black wheels. To mirror this option for Flying Spur, Bentley is introducing a gloss black wheel and a black-and-machine-finished version, allowing customers to match their wheels to their choice of brightware.

Inspired memories

B

ack in pre-lockdown days we published this photo (right). It’s time we fessed up and admit we don’t know the year, make or model of the car. Nor do we know where the photo was taken, or the names of the people in it. Now you might be thinking – and understandably so – why did we feature a photo we knew nothing about? Strange! Well not exactly, and here’s the rest of our confession – we published the photo because we saw it as amusing, and we captioned it by suggesting it explained what running boards were for. That could have been the end of the matter – but it’s not. The photo reminded two readers of cars which their fathers had owned. Recalling vehicles his dad had, Murray Smith suggested the car in the photo is probably a late 1920s or early 1930s model. The Smith family lived in Nelson and Murray’s father Clarrie was a dairy farm inspector whose work involved a lot of travel, so he had a succession of new cars, culminating with the purchase of a 1939 Chevrolet. Produced just before the America

entered the war, Murray says it was an excellent car, but after clocking up around 60,000 miles his dad realised the market for cars like it was good so he sold it, getting back exactly what it had cost him. He then bought earlier model second hand vehicles, including a 1924 Buick, followed by a 1928 Nash and a 1931 Buick. The first two of those cars was very similar to the car in our photo, which leads Murray to suggest the age of that car. Murray says the 1931 Buick had a slightly more modern appearance. It also had a straight-8 motor, and it was the car in which Murray got his driver’s licence. After serving his apprenticeship and becoming a qualified mechanic, Murray

along with a friend made a road trip south to look at the hydro projects being done along the Waitaki River. Murray decided he’d like to work there. That happened, but not immediately; first came stints at Burnetts and with another company. There was another very good consequence of the trip; in Ashburton Murray met his wife Janis (nee Wilson), whose father had owned a garage and went on to establish Ashburton Motors, on the site now occupied by the Mobil Service Station. Ultimately Murray became involved with that business before becoming a Rural Post owner/driver using a number of vehicles in which he clocked up hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Selling, servicing and driving vehicles has played a large part in Murray’s life. As did the trip from Nelson to Ashburton. Tom Sutton also got in touch for the same reason Murray contacted us. The car in the photo reminded Tom of a car owned by his dad Hubie. Hubie owned a Hudson which has left

The Sutton family Hudson. In the car are Tom’s mother Ngaire, his sister Barbara, brother Ray and Tom in the background.

S

o many of you have told us you really liked the story about the baby blue Fiat 500 bought brand you by a young chap Ashburton back in 1966. You’ll recall his future mother-in-law made it clear he needed a car, not a motorbike, if he was going to be taking her daughter out. Wisely be bought the Fiat 500. A good move in every sense, and the young couple used the little car for a wonderful roadtrip honeymoon. The now not-quite-so-young chap related the story in his own words a fortnight ago, but on

condition of anonymousity, which of course we respected. But he told the story so well people who know him felt they could hear him speaking as they read his words. Consequently some have correctly guessed who the couple are. We still can’t tell you. Well we sort of can, Neil and Janice (Jan) have agreed to publication of their Christian names. They and their family say they had fun sharing the story, and we and so many readers are grateful for a tale told so well which we all enjoyed.

an indelible memory in Tom’s mind. It was the first car he ever drove. At 8 or 9 years of age! Tom and his dad were at his uncle’s Lagmhor farm gathering firewood. They didn’t have a log splitter, instead as was often done in those days explosive powder was used to split the wood. On this particular day, and for whatever reason, the powder worked a little too well, and a large slice of wood, far bigger than a splinter, penetrated Hubie’s upper thigh, sticking out both sides of his leg. “It must have been painful,” says Tom who goes on to say, “Not that I felt it”. But of course they were in a bit of a predicament. Just the two of them out in a paddock, the one who could drive a car unable to and the other one (Tom) having never driven before. It wasn’t long before Tom found out he could drive, and somehow – “maybe I was standing up with my feet on the pedals” – he got his dad back to the farmhouse, and from there he was taken to hospital. Tom says necessity is the mother of invention, and he learnt to drive quickly. Fortunately Hubie was soon on the road to recovery – “He was hobbling round for a while” – he got back to cutting firewood, but did buy a chainsaw. Tom has great memories of the Hudson. Ironically some of his fondest memories are of holiday trips made in reverse direction to the trip made by Murray Smith. The trailer used for carting wood could easily be converted into a camper. Tom’s family had a canvas fold-out tent which hung in the shed. When lowered on to the trailer it became a camper, an early version of a pop-up caravan. Tom recalls great family holiday trips to Nelson in the Hudson with the trailer/ camper on behind. Funny isn’t it, the photo which appealed to our (maybe strange) sense of humour has brought back happy memories for Murray Smith and Tom Sutton. We’re glad that’s the case and grateful to them for sharing their memories with us all. In case you’re wondering, we still don’t know much about the car with the kids on the running board although we think Murray and Tom’s suggestion about its vintage are probably pretty accurate. And we still think it’s a funny photo.

ucati completes the colour range of the Multistrada 950 S for the Model Year 2021 by introducing a new GP White livery, which adds to the classic Ducati Red colour. The GP White livery takes its inspiration from the Ducati MotoGP graphics and is based on a colour scheme that alternates white and grey, maintaining the unmistakable Ducati touch in some red details, like in the frame and in the graphics on the alloy wheels. This new colouring was designed by the Borgo Panigale motorcycle manufacturer

Curious case of election promises T

here’s this thing about election promises. You know, the bit where they very rarely seem to come to fruition? And so a sense of scepticalness encroaches on your way of thinking when you hear a statement such as ‘when we win the election, we’ll build a four-lane highway between Ashburton and Christchurch’ you can’t help but think, yeah, right. I’d love one. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. I actually hate that stretch of road, it makes me nervous and I’d rather avoid travelling on it as much as I possibly can. But am I being too cynical here? After years of wondering whether or not it might happen, here we are presented with a committal to it actually happening if National are able to come into power later this year. The optimist in me says, that’s great, but the cynic says I’ll believe it if and when I see it. Because for all the good intentions and promises we get made by politicians, delivery is a completely different ball game sometimes. Often it comes in a different shape or form, but is sold as the real deal or sometimes it’s piled underneath a huge collection of excuses. Or perhaps the common notion that unless you are north of the Bombay Hills you don’t really matter is ringing in the ears and making me wonder. I’m just not sure. When Todd Muller stood in front of more than 300 Mid Cantabrians on Wednesday and pledged to build that four-lane highway if his party gets the nod in September I bet the immediate reaction of the majority was joyous. Then, as they piled back into their farm trucks, I wonder if they started to think about it a little bit more. I wonder if they began to think perhaps they’d just heard what they wanted to hear – not what they needed to hear. I could be right. I could be wrong. Only time, and the ballot box will tell.

A euthanasia referendum in a pandemic By Graham Adams, RNZ

S

upporters of assisted dying will hope very strongly that the pandemic will have boosted the groundswell for legislative change in New Zealand – pushing the usual high level of support even higher. A majority of the public have consistently supported some form of assisted dying for decades. Jessica Young, a PhD candidate at Otago University, investigated New Zealanders’ attitudes over 20 years to euthanasia and assisted dying. Her research showed that, on average, across all surveys in that time, 68.3 per cent of people supported assisted dying and 14.9 per cent opposed legislation, while 15.7 per cent were neutral or unsure. After attempts to legalise assisted dying through private member’s bills failed in 1995 and 2003, last year Parliament finally reacted to this sustained public pressure and passed the End of Life Choice Bill sponsored by David Seymour – with the proviso that the legislation needed to be ratified by a binding referen-

dum in order to come into force. As a result of last November’s vote, the End of Life Choice Bill became the End of Life Choice Act 2019. It is no longer a work in progress. The Act – passed by a majority of MPs 69-51 – is now in a form they consider safe and suitable to be put to the public for ratification. It came as a surprise therefore to hear John Campbell on TVNZ’s Breakfast last week ask Richard McLeod, a lawyer opposed to assisted dying, whether the “bill” could be “redrafted” to meet McLeod’s objections. McLeod rightly responded: “It’s too late for that. New Zealanders are now being asked to vote [at the referendum] on a piece of legislation.” For anyone inquisitive about the Act’s status during the interval between its passing in Parliament last November and the referendum in September, David Seymour sums it up like this: “To be perfectly correct, the End of Life Choice Act is a law. It has been signed by the Governor-General on behalf of the Queen, it has Royal Assent. “However, all laws have a commencement clause. Some

say ‘upon receiving Royal Assent’. Others say ‘x months after receiving royal assent’ – usually if there is an implementation programme to be put in place before the law can operate. “This law has a particularly complex commencement clause that talks about the conditions under which the act ‘comes into force’ and that is dependent on a referendum result. So it is a law, but it will not come into force until such a time as a referendum is passed to say so.” Otago University law professor Andrew Geddis puts it this way: “The legislation is an Act of Parliament, but is not yet the law of New Zealand as it only enters into force upon a majority vote at the referendum (according to the Act’s own terms).” In short, it is a law but not yet the law. In answer to Campbell’s clumsy query about “redrafting” the “bill”, the fact is that the bill Seymour originally lodged in the members’ ballot five years ago has already been heavily redrafted to accommodate the many and varied objections of critics such as Richard McLeod – most of which centred on fears that

the vulnerable needed to be better protected against coercion. Before the bill was passed, some of its major clauses were dropped entirely and the Act as it is now – restricts eligibility to adults who are dying with six months or less to live; have significant and ongoing decline in physical capability; are experiencing unbearable suffering that cannot be eased; and are capable of making an informed decision. The Act explicitly rules out eligibility solely on the grounds of mental illness, disability or advanced age. It is now less than three months before the referendum on September 19 when voters will be asked to simply answer “Yes” or No” to the question: “Do you support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force?” The views, opinions, positions or strategies expressed by the author and those providing comments are theirs alone, and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, positions or strategies of the Ashburton Guardian Co Ltd or any employee thereof

Circle of life A

s you may have heard we’ve had a few changes to the team at Hokonui. Our long serving sales manager Carol Johns opted for redundancy over the lockdown period and our sales support, Mel Perriton, is heading off to become the female version of Michael Bolgaris next month. It’s sad to see ‘the crew’ break up after all these years, we’ve had a lot of fun along the way, but life must go on. These changes have given me the opportunity to chip in and kick a few radio commercial sales goals and in the process hopefully add another scoop of rice into my fortnightly pile. It’s a return to where I started in radio. Back in 1995, after a few years at the Fairton works upon my return from the Big OE, I applied for an account executive role at Radio Ashburton. Account executive is just a posh way of saying selling radio ads. I had always fancied the idea of being a radio announcer, it was a natural progression for me I thought, from my after school job at Record World and school disco DJ. I thought this sales gig could be a foot in the door. As it turns out it was, eventually. Luckily, Guyon Campbell and Lyn Church saw some potential in me and gave me a shot. Truth be known, I really enjoyed the several years as an account executive at 3ZE and then sales manager at Fox FM. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all plain sailing and a licence

to print money, but it was very rewarding. I remember when I first went over to the dark side (Fox FM) and we were doing an awesome promo called the Dream Scream. The winner was going on an adrenaline-packed weekend that included white water rafting, skydiving, skiing and more. All the listeners had to do was phone in when they heard the ‘cue to call’ to get in the draw to win it. “This is gonna go off like a pork chop in the sun,” I thought to myself. The first five times we played the cue to call, NOBODY CALLED. “Oh my god, what have I done, why did I come here, we’ve got no listeners.” A mild panic set in, but I knew we had the team there to turn it into an awesome wee station. And we did. There have been times when you come up with an idea for an in-store promotion. You work hard to get it all together and think this will go gangbusters but, for whatever reason, they just fall flat on their faces. But when they do work, and the client’s till is ringing, it’s a real buzz.

I loved getting to know the people and how their business ticked, and then coming up with ideas on how we could promote that business. And I’m looking forward to doing that again, so much so that I’m actually writing this column at 3am on Wednesday. I’ve been up since 1.30am and I’m wired. I’d like to fully blame the salt and honey mix as mentioned in last week’s column, but I’m also mentally working out a promotion for a new client and can’t wait to run it by them. The good news for my wife’s ‘worry about me’ levels is that we are on the lookout for some new account executives. It could be one full-timer or maybe even a couple of 9am

to 3pm super stars, it will be exciting to see who comes out of the woodwork. Hopefully, it’s not some jumped-up little fluff just getting their foot in the door with a plan to use that foot to boot me out of my seat. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. The views expressed in this column are his and do not reflect the opinion of his employer or the Ashburton Guardian.

Fifa to the rescue in stagnant stadium saga I t is hard not to overstate the thrill in securing another major global sporting event. Amid a year of extraordinary insecurity within the sporting landscape, the news from a fortnight ago that the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was set to be hosted in Australia and New Zealand was welcomed with nothing less than a lengthy applause. Coming the same day that Liverpool finally won the English Premier League, it could be best described as (wait for it) a redletter day for many Kiwi football fans. Although those hurrahs were somewhat muffled as the old Christchurch stadium issue

reared its unsightly Orangetheory dome. Christchurch was confirmed as one of the host cities for games in the days following the announcement, despite the long awaited half-a-billion dollar arena set aside for 2024. The timeframes left the stadium in Addington as the only viable venue. Of course this is not before a $3.5m dollar upgrade to the pseudo-temporary ground which has missed out on All Blacks tests in recent years, reportedly due to its lowly capacity. The retort as to whether millions, especially the taxpayer, should be flung at a venue well

Adam Burns

SPORTS REPORTER

past its use-by-date is set to be a non-issue if Fifa indeed fork out for the overhaul, as indicated by the Christchurch Stadium Trust. Based on the projections delivered by ChristchurchNZ, the Garden City is set for a fiscal injection of more than $20 million from the tournament. The return on the investment is indisputable.

If there were any grumblings, and I had them before looking at the numbers, it would probably be based on principle. Millions for a ground without a long-term future would have been avoided if the long-winded stadium issue had been settled earlier. Yes, I acknowledge there were much more bigger matters at hand during the rebuild, but a span of at least 13 years without an adequate facility? Overdue. And with a mouthwatering Super Rugby clash in store tomorrow night, how good would it be to have a stadium a la Forsyth Barr for such a clash. Thankfully, Christchurch, who

missed out on Rugby World Cup games in 2011 as the city dealt with the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, has not been left out in the cold in the ensuing years which has seen such events as the Cricket World Cup and the FIFA under-20 World Cup come to town. Make no mistake, the tournament in three years will probably be the biggest sporting event to be staged in this part of the world. Over 1.1 billion people viewed last year’s edition in France, if that provides any inkling into what ballpark we’re operating in. The implications, both sporting and economic, for this country will be enormous.

No sign of DC for the Blues Rugby fans won’t get to see the sight of Dan Carter playing against the Crusaders this weekend afterall. Carter, who won three Super Rugby titles during his time with the Christchurch based side, hasn’t been named in the Blues squad for the top of the table Super Rugby Aotearoa clash on Saturday night. Carter signed with the Blues last month as injury cover but is yet to play for the side. While the sight of him in a Blues jersey might have been hard for Crusaders fans to swallow, his re-

turn to the field has been eagerly anticipated. However, the Blues have decided against playing mind games with the Crusaders and include Carter, who turned out for his Canterbury club Southbridge last weekend when the Blues had a Super Rugby Aotearoa bye. Blues coach Leon MacDonald, an ex-Crusader himself, has named an unchanged forward pack from that which beat the Highlanders in their last outing, while there are two changes in the backs, with halfback Finlay Christie and second-five Harry

Plummer coming into the starting fifteen. All Black prop Karl Tu’inukuafe is set to make his Super Rugby Aotearoa debut named on the bench having recovered from injury. The Crusaders and the Blues are both unbeaten in their three games in the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition, but “just because we have won the last three games, we know that means nothing in the scheme of things,” said MacDonald. “The Crusaders are the benchmark in New Zealand rugby, so

we are under no illusion about the task ahead of us. “They have won their last 35 games of Super Rugby at home,” he said. Forwards coach Tom Coventry said he had been working his players extra hard this week. “We’ve had a couple of extra sessions with our forward pack to make sure we are ready for that test and a little bit of work on our set piece because that is invariably where their strength is and it’s an area we let ourselves down in the last time we played them,” Coventry said.

All Whites striker Chris Wood made his 100th English Premier League football appearance as Burnley beat West Ham 1-0 in London. Woods came off the bench in the second half with his side already ahead and had two good goal scoring opportunities incuding having one ruled out for offside. The result moves Burnley up to ninth, while West Ham remain just four points above the relegation zone. Mohamed Salah scored twice as champions Liverpool moved on to 92 points with a 3-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion. Liverpool need nine points from their remaining four games to secure the highest points total in a Premier League season, with the current record set by Manchester City, who amassed 100 points in 2018. Captain David Silva scored one goal and made two more as second placed Manchester City put on a passing masterclass to overwhelm Newcastle United with a 5-0 win. Seventh placed Sheffield United moved within a point of Wolves after beating them 1-0.

Mayfield marvels at pennants By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

A big win at Tinwald at the weekend has given one of Mayfield’s pennants sides the edge in local interclub golf. The Mayfield Marvels completed an 11-1 win over the Tinwald Twinkles on Sunday, flying in the face of their opponents’ home course judgement. The Marvels’ 27.5 point tally has them in front on one side of the ladies pennants draw. The ten teams have been split into two groups for this year’s pennants match play. The Mayfield outfit were not

the only comprehensive winners at Tinwald. The Treasures swept the Teasers 12-0 to earn Tinwald club bragging rights. The Teasers sit on 18 points behind the Marvels and the Rubies (24). The Rubies of Rakaia also had a successful round, beating Ashburton’s Belles 8-4. The Belles sit fourth on the ladder on eight points ahead of the Twinkles (6). Ashburton’s Birdies prevailed over the Methven Missys 7.5-4.5. Meanwhile, the Mayfield Maidens and the Tinwald Tigers

could not be separated with their matchup ending all square at 6-6. It is proving to be competitive in the scratch event, with three teams vying for the top rank at present. The Methven Magics beat Ashburton’s Bulldogs 12-5 following a big win secured by the Tinwald Top Guns, who beat the Tinwald Turbos 14-3. Both the Magics and the Top Guns are tied up on 32.5 points in the scratch, with the Bullets half a point back. The Bullets, of Ashburton, were emphatic over the Fire winning 14-0, which leaves the Rakaia

team down the bottom of the scratch standings after three legs. There were also wins for the Mayfield Masters and the Tinwald Trainwrecks in the low handicap competition at Tinwald. The Masters defeated the Battlers 11.5-5.5, while the Trainwrecks proved their game was anything but, easing to a 12.5-4.5 win over the Ashburton Bangers. The Masters top the lower handicap standings on 35.5 points six points ahead of the Trainwrecks. The high handicap event was played at Rakaia on the weekend. The Tinwald Tasers edged

Covid calls an end to Ryder Cup This year’s Ryder Cup golf event, which was scheduled to be held in late September in Wisconsin, has been postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The hotly-contested biennial team competition between the United States and Europe, known for its raucous, partisan crowds, was originally

scheduled for September 25-27 at Whistling Straits. It will now be held from September 24-26, 2021. The Presidents Cup, which pits a 12-man team from the US against international players from outside Europe, was also postponed a year and will be played September 22-25, 2022

at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, organisers said. Organisers said that medical experts and public authorities in Wisconsin were not able to provide certainty that conducting an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September would be possible.

ahead in the standings of its group courtesy of a 10-7 win over the Rakaia Rascals. However the Click team are waving the flag for Rakaia in the other pool after a 13-4 win over the Tinwald Terrors, which puts them on top on the side of the draw. Other results comprised the Rakaia Rebels winning 14-3 over the Ashburton Bravehearts 143, the Methven Maulers beating the Mayfield Meerkats and the Tinwald Mud Dogs taking out the Tinwald Torpedoes 11.5-5.5 to complete a very busy weekend of golf.

■■INDOOR BOWLS

Bowlers getting back on the mats Ashburton’s indoor bowling community will come together for the first time this season when an open pairs tournament is held at the McNally Street Stadium. A disrupted season due to Covid-19 has seen the sport’s calendar for the year decimated, but players are looking forward to beginning a truncated year on the mats. Play tomorrow begins at 1.30pm and entries are still being taken through Rowena Mackenzie up until tonight.

■■RUGBY

Sense of identity hugely important for Whetu Douglas By Joe Porter Whetukamokamo Douglas is a Crusader and a Maori All Black, who’s taken his famous name from the East Coast to Italy to Christchurch. “I’m named after one of my great ancestors from back home (Ngati Porou, East Coast), and I’m very proud to carry the name.” Douglas, of Ngati Porou and Te Arawa, Ngati Whakaue, is named after a former Ngati Porou chief, Whetukamokamo, who was famous for his generosity and warrior wairua. The book, Nga Pepeha a nga Tipuna, The Sayings of the Ancestors, quotes lines from a lament for the death of Whetukamokamo. Translated they read, “It was his food so freely tossed out that was my fondness; it was his canoe hauled up with chanting or shouting. “I think with great regret of his lavish gifts of food, so that unsolicited all came to haul his canoe. “Being a keen fisherman, he often went out, returning to toss the fish into the eagerly waiting hands of those lining the shore.” When Whetukamokamo was killed, Nga Puhi left his body in the Awatere River. His family then adopted the name Awatere. Douglas, who’s fluent in Te Reo, said the name holds special significance.

“Arapeta Awatere is my great grandfather and I believe his great great grandfather who was a chief, Whetukamokamo, who sacrificed his life for the safety of his people. “It was an uphill battle and one that probably couldn’t have been won, but he chose to help in the battle against Nga Puhi anyway.” Being connected to tikanga maori is incredibly important to Douglas and his own sense of identity. “That relationship is very strong. “Every day it’s what I teach my children and what I reference daily with them. It’s been a huge part of my upbringing. Most of my life I’ve lived in Rotorua or back home on the East Coast. “I have strong ties and connections to both my ancestral histories.” And that connection keeps Douglas grounded and self-aware wherever rugby may take him. “I’m pretty confident in who I am no matter where I go, whether it’s Christchurch or Italy. “Down here in Canterbury I have more responsibility and more accountability with my children around making sure they are immersed and educated on maori culture. I have to be the teacher and that’s what I’m working on at the moment. “I believe it starts with te reo, with the language and it’s awesome to see the likes of TJ Perenara doing a post match

interview in full Te Reo on the weekend doing the same for maori culture. “Tikanga Maori has been so much of my upbringing that it will always be a part of who I am, whether or not I’m physically connected to the whenua or not. “I’ve lived in Italy and I’ve spent many years in Hamilton and now I’m in Christchurch. “Knowing who I am and knowing my culture has allowed me to be a little more adaptable to different situations and I’m able to look at things differently to other people, those are some of my biggest strengths.” While he doesn’t regularly think about his namesake’s place in history, he takes mana from the wairua it holds, where it comes from and what it represents. “Spiritually, every day I know it’s there. “I love going home, up the East Coast or Rotorua, and hearing the language used in the whanau. It always inspires me to keep it up with my tamariki. “Going home always rekindles my fire and helps me to reconnect with my ancestors and my culture.” And he says the Crusaders culture is one of the reasons his career has blossomed. “I love it down here (at the Crusaders), it’s a great environment to not only better yourself on the field, but off the field as well.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Because you are determined to work for hours at a thing even without a clue of where you’re going or where you’ll end up, you are bound to turn out something entirely creative today. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You are likely to persuade others with your example, so be careful to keep it in the realm of what, if exponentially multiplied, would benefit the world. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Avoid staying busy for the sake of looking busy. It is not lazy or idle to stop and take stock of the situation. In fact, pausing for perspective is the smartest thing you can do right now. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Don’t discount what you know. You’ll find strength in your roots. Accept and love where you came from. Cancer energy teaches that home is home for a reason; embrace it. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): A romantic connection ignites your creativity or a creative connection ignites your spirit of romance. Ultimately, love is a creative discourse, and the shape of a love affair is a work of art. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The right attitude makes life about living and not about judging. You’ll be sure to stock your life with enough interesting endeavours to keep you focused on your own business. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Anything you call out today, the universe will answer. Whatever your opinion may be, all you have to do is type it into a search engine to discover that there’s someone who feels the same way. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Doing everything at once isn’t advised, although sometimes it can’t be helped. And the more you try to do, the more capable you become. None can control the natural force that is the flow of life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Little by little, you’re letting go of a past pain. Soon, you’ll be totally free of it. This you do somewhat consciously, though your subconscious is working overtime on the project, too. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Bravado is your birthright. Today, you’ll find yourself in a situation that requires more courage than experience. Dive in and learn as you go and you will be the better for it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You can put up a social media post and then take it down. Most times that doesn’t matter much, but it’s also true that once you hit send, it’s a matter of public record. Share advisedly. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You know how to compliment people. It’s not about what you admire, but about what they need to hear. It’s beautiful when those to factors collide into one message.

WAKANUI in the box seat

By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The goals are flowing in Mid Canterbury hockey as Wakanui’s first grade men’s lineup up the scoring ante. The side holds a three point lead at the top of the 1st grade men’s standings as the premier grades take the week off. The first grade men’s leaders did their goal difference no disservice after an 8-1 hammering of Tinwald Black on Sunday at the NBS Turf. Three points back is Tinwald Orange, who put five past Hampstead/Wakanui at the weekend.

Wakanui’s caper and Tinwald’s 5-0 shutout followed a more closely-fought affair between Allenton and Hampstead/Lowcliffe, with Allenton prevailing 2-1 to secure their first win of the season. It is believed there may be some exhibition games to be held this weekend, following two first grade men’s games being called off a fortnight ago. Methven’s top women’s team sit in top spot following a 3-0 win over Wakanui on Friday. Hampstead edged it in the interclub derby over the club’s Blue side 1-0.

In other results at the weekend, Ashburton College’s 1st XI boys came away with an impressive 7-2 win over St Andrew College’s 2nd XI in Christchurch on Sunday. Wakanui’s senior men toppled Cambridge 4-2 in Timaru on Saturday, and can now put their feet up this weekend with the bye and holding a six point lead in the South Canterbury competition. The club’s senior women also

have the week off after beating Cambridge 3-1 down the line. Like the men, the team also has a comfortable buffer at the top of the division one standings. Both Tinwald and Wakanui were victorious in 2nd grade girls’ hockey. Tinwald eased to a 5-0 win over Timaru Girls’ High School in Ashburton, and Wakanui ran through Roncalli’s 2nd XI 8-2 in Timaru. Wakanui host Roncalli’s 1st XI

in Ashburton on Sunday, while Tinwald have the bye. The two Mid Canterbury sides are well placed in women’s division two, with unbeaten Tinwald on top. Sitting in third spot of the nineteam standings is Wakanui, who trail second placed Cambridge by three competition points. Second grade boys’ hockey does not resume until the first week of Term 3.
