An early snowfall struck Methven and its surrounds yesterday morning forcing the closure of schools and pre-schools. BY SUSAN SANDYS

Methven school pupils have an autumn snowstorm to thank for what was probably their shortest day ever at school yesterday. About 200 students from Mount Hutt College and primary schools, arriving on school buses, went straight to the college hall after the decision was made to close the school.

The college had sent out a news flash email to parents by 8.20am that the school was now closed for the day, however, at that time students were already on buses on their way in, and some town students were also already on their way to school. Those not on school buses who turned up to school were sent back home once contact was made with home, and school bus-

es were reloaded with students to take them home once contact was made with parents. College principal John Schreurs said that by about 9.45am all bus students were back on their buses on their way home. He said that prior to 7am the decision was made to cancel some upper country bus routes. But at that stage it looked like snowfall was going to stay at 400

metres above sea level as forecast, so it appeared schools would be able to open for the day. “As I got to school about 7am, there was a little bit of sleet but nothing major, and then it came in,” Schreurs said. That’s when board of trustees had to launch into action at the various Methven schools to look at the situation. As the heavy snow continued they made the

decision to close their schools for the day. The bitter autumn snowstorm saw about six centimetres of snow fall in the town from about 7.30am to 9.30am, and blustery conditions with further snowfall kicking off mid-afternoon.

Ashburton-born rugby legend Fergie McCormick passes away

Sex offender breaches conditions A man on the Government’s child sex offender register and living in Mid Canterbury has been convicted of failing to comply with reporting obligations. Lee Martin Chase was jailed in 2011 after a jury found him guilty of two charges of unlawful sexual connection and he was released on parole in January 2015. New legislation in 2016 meant his name was added to the child sex offender register and he had to advise his supervising probation officer about his living circumstances. Chase was not to associate with people under 16 years but police found him living with a woman and her child. Chase pleaded guilty to the reporting breach in the Ashburton District Court this week and Judge Joanna Maze sentenced him to 90 hours’ community work. She declined an application for name suppression. Chase’s lawyer Gordon Paine said his client was headed to the court of appeal because his name was unfairly on the child sex offender register. He said Chase was sentenced to six years jail in 2011; he served three and a half years and was released on conditions. The new Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) Act in 2016 had added a retrospective penalty for his client which breached the New Zealand Bill of Rights, Paine

said. Being on the register was a punishment for life and it was imposed on him after he had been sentenced and released from prison, he said. “He acknowledges what he did and has paid the price, and now he is still paying the price and will continue to pay the price until someone in the high court overturns that.” Paine said Chase had been forced to live in a caravan separately from his wife and his stepchild and his private life was in tatters. There had been no complaints raised about his behaviour. Judge Maze said Chase’s failure to disclose to his supervising probation officer that a child was living in his home was an offence that carried a maximum penalty of one year in prison or a $2000 fine. Chase had been served notice he was on the register and advised what his obligations were, yet he had deliberately breached, she said. The offence came to light when police attended the address on an unrelated matter and it became apparent a child was living there. Judge Maze said the validity of the prosecution was not a decision for her court but it was plain that the 2016 act had been intended by Parliament to be retrospective in its effect for Chase and others in his position. Former All Blacks fullback, and Ashburton-born rugby legend, Fergie McCormick died yesterday morning in Christchurch Hospital. He was 78 and had been battling throat cancer. William Fergus McCormick played 28 times for the All Blacks between 1965 and 1971, including 16 tests, and was well known for his smallness – he stood only 1.71m – and his toughness. In a profile on the All Blacks website, Lindsay Knight writes of McCormick, who was born in Ashburton on April 24, 1939: “In his heyday there were few more indomitable figures in the game and the stockily-built pocket battleship became celebrated for his fearless tackling. “He was also one of the first running fullbacks, possessing a startling turn of pace and successfully adapting his style when the restricted kicking into touch laws were introduced in the late 1960s.” McCormick played a record 222 appearances for Canterbury in an 18-year representative career from 1958 to 1975, scoring a record 1297 points. He was part of the Canterbury team that beat the Lions in 1959 and played in the infamous 1971 match against the Lions, a bloodbath after which the tourists complained about the roughhouse tactics of the home side. McCormick played 310 first class matches, scoring 2065 points throughout his long career. A stalwart of the Linwood club in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs, McCormick had trouble breaking into the All Blacks in the early to mid-1960s despite

After four years of planning and the generous input of dozens of community groups, Hampstead Kindergarten is home to a new wharenui. An official opening and blessing was held yesterday morning, acknowledging the wharenui as a special place of spirituality for the kindergarten. Head teacher Justine Hanrahan

said the shell of the wharenui was created by the Ashburton College trades class in December 2014 and gifted to the kindergarten. After consultations with Maori whanau, families, caregivers and families, the kindergarten decided on a location and design for it. She said the elaborate design created has fronds to represent children growing, a paddle depicting the movement of people in

two directions that people go, and one day will return and a koruru at the top depicting the past, present and future tamariki, kaiako and whanau. Hanrahan thanked Angella Otene and Tom Taukamo for sharing their knowledge to help design the wharenui, Hampstead School’s kapa haka group for sharing the opening, and Hampstead School prinicpal Peter Melrose for helping

with the ribbon cutting, along with the kindergarten’s oldest member Natalie MacGregor. It was a fitting way to open it, because “one of the purposes of the wharenui will be to farewell children as they leave us to begin school,” Hanrahan said. The wharenui is named E tipu e rea mo nga ra o to ao, meaning “grow up, oh youth, and fulfil the needs of the coming generation”.

The skifield has another two months before its winter opening date of June 8. Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said staff evacuated the ski area on Monday night due to the forecast snow, and planned to re-enter yesterday, accessing the skifield on a groomer. Based on the snow and rainfall received in Methven, he estimated the mountain would have received about 50 centimetres of snow by about 1.30pm yesterday. The MetService issued a Severe Weather Warning on Monday, for very cold, strong southerlies, and rain turning to snow above 400 metres overnight Monday in the Canterbury High Country, with some pockets of snow possible as low as 300 metres. The gloomy weather is set to continue today with snow showers possible in higher areas while strong southerlies rip across the Canterbury plains. More photos, P4

Eleven Mid Canterbury women have gone back to school and they couldn’t be happier. Yesterday they were focused intently on computer screens as one test at a time they strived for a perfect score. For each of them, that return to the classroom had just two objective, easing isolation and gaining independence. The women were from the Philippines, Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand and two of those in the classroom came from the district’s most distant reaches at Klondyke, while others were scattered across the district’s rural areas. Each woman described how difficult it was when you had to rely on other people to take you to town, social events or to watch your children in school events. Over eight weeks the students will study the road code and will then sit their learner’s licence. From that point a second series of classes will be held to enable them to sit thier restricted licenc-

es, co-ordinator Wendy Hewitt said. Word is spreading about the value of the course and Hewitt said she was already receiving inquiries for the second learner’s licence intake. One of the key issues in moving the women from learner to restricted status will be finding enough ‘mentor’ drivers to help with tuition and confidence behind the wheel, she said. One student, Ludy, summed up the women’s feelings about the course – “we are so very grateful to Ashburton for doing this for us,” she said. Ashburton Learning Centre tutor Gayle McClusky is leading the course and said she was impressed with the speed with which her students were working through and gaining a good understanding of the road code. The learner driver programme is funded by Advance Ashburton, the Ashburton District Council, the Road Safety Council, the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust and the Lotteries Commission.

Driver fell asleep at the wheel A professional driver who fell asleep at the wheel and crashed a freight truck and trailer south of Hinds, blocking State Highway 1, admitted a charge of careless driving when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. Rylie James Iain Patrick Cook, 24, told Justices of the Peace Steve Wise and Eric Weir that he had been intending to pull over at Rangitata because he was tired, but crashed before he got there. Police prosecutor Stuart Whyte said the heavy truck and trailer tipped over about 4.30am on January 11 after Cook dozed off. The vehicle drifted onto the grass verge, waking Cook, who tried to regain control; the vehicle

slid on the wet road surface and tipped over, blocking the highway. Cook, from Oxford, was fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130. The JPs warned him driving while tired was a serious road safety matter. Christopher Jon Tait, 26, a roofer, admitted driving while forbidden on January 16. He had been pulled over in June 2013 and forbidden to drive again until he got a licence. He was stopped on River Terrace this year, where police discovered he was still unlicensed. Tait told the JPs he was doing a course to get his driver’s licence and forklift licence. They gave him until June 13 to

come back with the paperwork. Andrew David John Bell, 20, led police on a 54km chase before his vehicle was stopped by road spikes at Winchester. Prosecutor Whyte said Bell was spotted driving on East Street at 1.50am on January 16 but when police tried to stop him he sped off south on State Highway 1, reaching speeds up to 130km/h. He told the JPs he had a mental blowout and didn’t stop, despite the flashing lights and sirens on the police vehicle. Bell was fined $200, plus $130 court costs, and ordered to do a driver improvement course. Tattoo artist Tirakarere Richard

Apaapa was also given time to get his licence after being pulled over on Walnut Avenue and found to be driving without one. He had been pulled over in Gisborne in 2015 and forbidden from driving until he got a New Zealand licence. The JPs granted him time to get the paperwork. A number of offenders to failed to appear in court this week and warrants of arrested were issued for: Joshua Daniel Youngman, Kiahn Taine Taylor-Edwards, Marcus Ewen Wilmshurst, Maki Jackmathuen Samuela, Nicholas Victor Botica, Daniel James Anderson and Christopher Stephen Kemp.

Man on a raft of charges granted bail A 37-year-old Mid Canterbury man facing 14 charges including burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and dishonesty has been granted bail until he is back before the court on June 25. Quentin Charles Parkinson will be living in a North Island

town as part of bail conditions set by Ashburton District Court Judge Joanna Maze this week. Parkinson, who the court was told had a methamphetamine habit, must also abstain from illegal drugs as part of his release on bail.

He pleaded guilty to possession of a meth pipe. He pleaded not guilty and elected trial by jury on four charges of receiving stolen property, two of dishonestly using a document, three of burglary, two of theft from a car, possess-

ing burglary tools, preparing to commit a crime and possession of an offensive weapon. Police had opposed bail. The charges to which he pleaded not guilty will be called again on June 25 for a case review.

Police are investigating the theft of a large billboard advertisement after it went mysteriously missing from its frame in Methven. A Ruralco advertisement featuring a local farmer on his farm was taken from the billboard site on the end of the Mountain Gym building facing the Brown Pub carpark. Methven Police Senior Constable Mike Seque said the informant is unsure of the time frame exactly, but thinks it happened within the first two weeks of March, most likely around the A&P show weekend. “The framing for the billboard is still there but the large advertisement itself has gone,” he said. Police have put out the call for anyone who may have any information leading to the recovery or identity of the offenders, or anyone who simply may have seen the advertisement being taken down. Students at Ashburton Intermediate have been learning about the primary industries in the best way possible – through their eyes, ears and tastebuds. The school received a visit from New Zealand Young Farmers last Friday to explore the importance and role of the primary industries in the New Zealand economy. In room 8/4, Young Farmers project manager Mary Holmes illustrated the link between agriculture and food production. Student Te Whitu said she had learnt the proper meaning of stereotyping, while classmate Amelia learnt that the majority of New Zealand’s dairy products are exported overseas. The class also took part in a mini sundae making competition, where they had to combine ingredients like kiwifruit, ice cream, chocolate and mousse. Holmes said New Zealand Young Farmers were seeking to grow awareness about the primary industries and inspire excitement about possible careers in an industry many of them won’t know much about. “Not all primary industry jobs require you to wear gumboots,” she said.

Fire crews contain ship fire in Timaru Firefighters have contained a massive blaze on a fishing ship in Timaru Port that left three people hospitalised for smoke inhalation. The fuel fire broke out on the Dong Won 701 at 9pm on Monday with 10 crews working through the night to bring it under control. It destroyed the bridge and structures on the ship’s upper deck but did not spread beyond the vessel. Four crews remain at the scene along with two tug boats working to cool the sides of the ship as steam and smoke still fanned out from it, Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Steven Greenyer says. “It’s still not fully extinguished, but it’s looking a lot better than it was about four to five hours ago. We’re reasonably confident it’s not going to escalate,” he said. Nick Donaldson, the acting chief executive of port operator PrimePort, said his team had earlier worked to ensure other vessels were not caught up in the blaze. But now the fire had been contained in the Dong Won 701, he said the plan was to let it burn out while his team looked to

resume shipping operations elsewhere in the port. Environment Canterbury was also monitoring the scene, senior manager Nick Donaldson said. “Once the fire is extinguished, Environment Canterbury will work with PrimePort to manage environmental risks associated with the subsequent salvage operation,” he said. “At this time, with the fire is contained within the vessel, there are no immediate environmental risks.” Mr Greenyer says two more crews from Christchurch and a further two from Dunedin were on their way to the fire to relieve the crews that battled it overnight. “Both paid and volunteer firefighters have been working incredibly hard to get this fire under control, in some pretty trying conditions,” he said. “The weather overnight has been appalling, it’s been very wet and cold.” He also said firefighters had been careful not to use too much water on the fire in case they sunk the boat. - NZN

Dog rescued from mine shaft A loved family pet has been pulled from a 7m-deep abandoned Waihi mine shaft by a team of rescuers. Seven-year-old fox terrier Roxy was discovered inside the abandoned Waihi mine shaft yesterday after going missing on Monday. The shaft is within a fully fenced-off area at the back of Tania Maitlin’s property at the end of Boyd Rd. Maitlin was mowing her lawn on Monday evening before Roxy disappeared. “She was sitting on my lap when mowing and she spied a set of possum eyes. She took off after it and ran off into the fenced off area.” Maitlin called Roxy but thought she would be back later. “I put her biscuits outside and her bowl next to her bed but when I got up the next day at 5am, I opened the curtain, and the

biscuits were still there,” she said. Before raising the alarm, Maitlin sent Roxy’s best mate, a black labrador named Molly, to search for the fox terrier. “Molly directed me straight toward the shaft by the fence; she sat there whimpering and barking . . . Letting me know this was where she was.” The Oceana Gold Mines Rescue Team was called to help save Roxy. “Within 20 minutes they were on our property. They were amazing and quick. It took them three-and-a-half hours to get Roxy out of the hole,” Maitlin said. Roxy is now reunited with her family and suffered minor injuries from her fall. “She came back with a few bruises on her leg and some bad cuts on her ear and other lesions,” Maitlin said. “Other than that she is fine but was in a lot of shock.” - NZME

So, there’s only one thing to do. Up prices. So now, while you’re happily thinking about the few extra bucks in the back pocket each week, you’ll barely notice the price of some everyday things creeping up. For someone earning the minimum wage, they will have received, from April 1, another $30 per week on top of their previous income.

By the time tax is removed from that and, perhaps a little more of a contribution to Kiwisaver, then you’re left on the right side of $20 a week for someone working 40 hours. Doesn’t sound like a lot, does it? But then the coffee you buy daily goes up 50 cents per cup because the café you buy it from has had to increase their staffing costs and need to counter that somehow, so hike up the price of one of their best sellers. There’s $3.50 of that $20 per week gone already. Add in the government’s proposed fuel tax, which would see an extra 12 cents per litre added to the current price of fuel and you’re losing another $5.40 for

a 45 litre tank of unleaded 91 petrol, at its current price of roughly $2.08 per litre. And just like that half of your pay rise is gone. For all the hoopla and good press that decisions like minimum wage pay increases might receive, they don’t – at the end of the day – actually correlate to much of a return to you. It can be easy to be blinded by the bottom line dollar, especially when it’s more than you’re used to – but it’s also very pertinent to be aware of the world that is going on around you too. The above scenario is just a very small part of a much bigger picture and there’s a whole lot more to factor in. The fuel tax alone will cause

News of a rise in minimum wage recently will have been met with open arms by the majority of the country – unless you are an employer of course – but delving deeper into what it may exactly mean for the average New Zealander is interesting. Of course, everyone is entitled to be paid well for their services, no matter what industry you might work in. But the issue is that not every employer is going to be able to meet the demands of everyday life while incurring a heavier penalty on the bottom line once wages have been withdrawn.

prices to rise due to the fact that pretty much everything has a fuel component to it and businesses in this economic climate are unlikely to be able to just wave away the prospect of higher outgoings. We need to be a country which makes it reasonably easy for someone to get a start in life. It shouldn’t be a battle to buy a first home or get a loan to get that new car – especially if it’s for the betterment of your life further down the track. Let’s all just hope that the rises on the horizon don’t impact too much on the rest of life – there’s already enough challenges out there now without the added pressure of more, particularly when it comes to money.

Why Ashburton is just like Auckland L

ast weekend, as I ventured north to visit my orangechocolate-confectionery comrades, an epiphany struck. As routine as it is for the mainland to ridicule JAFAs (and as often as I try to dodge your probes into “where do you come from?”) I had begun to see my hometown, Auckland City, through new eyes, but could not figure out why. Last weekend, there was something different about that greyscale cityscape – a nagging new form of familiarity, followed by a confronting realisation. It’s not a truth I expect to be readily welcomed by you readers, or to be any more palatable than a cup of warm, weedy pond-water from the Ashburton Domain. But settle in, prepare yourselves for a change in perspective – because I’m about to explain why we foes are in fact, incredibly alike. 1- Demographic attributes Firstly, foreign visitors may often remark on Ashburton District’s profoundly large

sheep population. However, meander through the brunch paradise that is Ponsonby Central, and you will see equally substantial flocks of the not-dissimilar, native Auckland WhiteGirl. Like regular ovines, this species shares imitative behaviours, a passion for daily consumption of green food – avocado (sorry, had to go there), and despite wearing valuable, merino outerwear, neither flock are able to accrue enough money for their own investments or house deposits. 2- Cultural rituals As you may be aware, Auckland’s pride and joy a potentially explosive hunk of rock situated in the Hauraki Gulf. You may not know that its

name, Rangitoto, translates to “bloody sky”. Ashburtonians can also be heard belting the same two words at their TV when the reception is interrupted during a live Crusaders game. 3- Infrastructure features Ashburton’s got Tinwald, Auckland’s got the North Shore, and at no point have either of us felt enough companionship with our estranged outer suburbs to build more than one connecting bridge. Subsequently, all of us have now endured the excruciating pain of bottleneck traffic jams (presumably named so due to the overwhelming feeling of wanting to bottle someone when you’re stuck in one). 4- Points of interest. In Ashburton there’s Lake Hood, in Auckland there’s Da Hood (also known as South Auckland). Same diff. 5- Natural resources How do you like your swimming water? Risky, with a dash of nitrate and farm run-off? Or downright off-putting, with a

cheeky sprinkle of dog faeces and e-coli? I see minimal difference between the bathing facilities in some Ashburton rivers and some Auckland beaches. Best reserved for the petri dish and for aesthetic value only. 6- Notable residents Last but certainly not least on my list, are the Todds. Auckland’s got Todd Property, Waikato’s got old mate Mark Todd. Wellington’s got Todd Corp and Ashburton’s got an iconic shop and a sign and a journalist and a few more Todds. School bus crash kills 27 A school bus has plunged off a mountain road into a deep gorge in the Himalayan foothills, killing 23 children, some as young as four, Indian officials said. Four adults also died, Sandeep Kumar said, a local official. Ten children were hospitalised. Initial reports indicated the bus driver was speeding as he took the children home and lost control at the edge of the gorge. The bus fell some 60 metres to the ground below, police officer Sunil Kumar said. The adults killed included the bus driver, two teachers and another woman, officials said. Most of the children riding in the bus were believed to be in elementary school. The crash occurred in the

Not a rumour – Lindsey Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac part ways. The singerguitarist is out of Fleetwood Mac. The band said in a statement that Buckingham will not be on their new tour. The announcement came in two terse sentences at the bottom of a long news release announcing the new concerts. “Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour,” the statement said. “The band wishes Lindsey all the best.” He’ll be jointly replaced by Neil Finn of Crowded House and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers.

Tensions rise as Israel blamed for missile strike A suspected poison gas attack in a Syrian rebel-held town and airstrikes on a Syrian air base that Damascus and Moscow blamed on US ally Israel escalated tensions in the already volatile Mideast and raised the threat of possibly imminent American retaliation. The timing of the airstrikes in central Homs province, hours after President Donald Trump said there would be “a big price to pay” for the chemical weapons attack, raised questions about whether Israel was acting alone or as a proxy for the United States. The strike on the air base reportedly killed 14 people, including four Iranians. The UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, in his most dire warning since taking the job four years ago, warned the UN Security Council that recent grave events have drawn national, regional and international actors “into dangerous situations of potential or actual confrontation”. Israel did not comment on the missile strike. The Jewish

State typically does not comment on its airstrikes in Syria, which have been numerous in Syria’s civil war. The fast-paced developments threatened to further hike tensions between the US and Russia, which has in the past warned against any US military action against President Bashar Assad’s government. Iran, a key ally of Assad, condemned the airstrikes, which it said killed four Iranians, including a colonel and a member of the Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace force. Opposition activists said 40 people died in Saturday night’s chemical attack in the town of Douma, the last remaining rebel bastion in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, blaming Assad’s forces. The attack killed entire families in their homes and underground shelters, opposition activists and local rescuers said. The Syrian government strongly denied it carried out a chemical weapons attack and the Organisation for the Pro-

hibition of Chemical Weapons said it has opened an investigation. In a statement, it said a factfinding mission was gathering information from all available sources to establish whether chemical weapons were used. Russia’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, urged inspectors from the watchdog agency to fly to Syria’s capital and visit the site in a nearby rebel-held town. Trump condemned the heinous attack in Syria and said later at a Cabinet meeting that he would forcefully respond. He said that after conferring with his military advisers, he would soon decide on how to respond, and against whom. British Prime Minister Theresa May said Assad’s government and its backers, including Russia, “must be held to account” if it is found to have been responsible for the suspected poison gas attack. The European Union also laid the blame squarely on Assad’s government. The Security Council held an

emergency meeting to discuss the chemical attack and the council president said experts were working on a resolution on the continuing use of chemical weapons in Syria, but sharp differences remain between Russia and the US and its allies. Russia’s Defence Ministry said two Israeli aircraft targeted the base, firing eight missiles. It said Syria shot down five of them while the other three landed in the western part of the base. Israel’s Foreign Ministry had no comment when asked about reports of the airstrikes. Amos Yadlin, a former Israeli fighter pilot and ex-head of Israeli military intelligence, stopped short of saying Israel was responsible for the airstrike. But he suggested that the chemical attack had crossed a red line and prompted Israel to take action to send a message to Syria and arch-enemy Iran. The Syrian government has denied the chemical weapons allegations, calling them fabrications. – AP

Kim Jong Un briefs party Nicaraguan forest fire on future dialogue with US burns almost 9000 acres North Korea’s official media say leader Kim Jong Un has briefed top ruling party officials on his vision for the future direction of dialogue with the United States and his upcoming summit with South Korea’s president. The official Korean Central News Agency reported Kim gave his “profound analysis and appraisal” of the prospects for North KoreaUS dialogue at a meeting of the Politburo of the ruling party’s Central

Committee. The meeting was held on Monday. Yesterday’s report did not mention plans for Kim to hold a summit with President Donald Trump in May or June, but it suggests Pyongyang is preparing for the meeting. Kim is scheduled to meet first with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on April 27 in the Demilitarised Zone that divides the Koreas. – AP

A forest fire in Nicaragua that has been burning out of control for a week has blackened almost 9000 acres in a southern nature reserve. The Indio Maiz reserve is on Nicaragua’s border with Costa Rica, but the Nicaraguan government has refused Costa Rican offers of aid. The two countries have had long-

running disputes over other areas of their border. Costa Rica’s firefighting force said Monday that it was told by Nicaraguan officials that soldiers are being sent to fight the blaze so no Costa Rican help was needed. Nicaragua says it has 800 soldiers, five planes and 10 boats fighting the fire. – AP

Make adviser disclosure info easier to understand – minister Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi wants more easily-understood financial adviser disclosure rules to make sure customers aren’t led astray. And he is seeking submissions on regulations accompanying the upcoming law change. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment discussion document came out the same day that Financial Markets Authority-commissioned research showed investors have found product disclosure statements more useful than the previous regime in offering valuable insights in investment offers. Legislators are currently considering a bill to remove some of the confusion for consumers in the way financial advisers are designated, and putting client obliga-

tions on the industry. While that works its way through Parliament, MBIE is seeking feedback on proposed regulations that will set the disclosure requirements for advisers to make sure consumers get all the information they need at the right time. “Consumers should have that information to assist them to decide, for example, whether to obtain advice from a particular provider,” Faafoi said in a statement. “I want to make sure that important information is presented in simple terms that consumers understand.” The proposed disclosure regime can draw on the experience of changes to securities law, which pared back the size of investment prospectuses to the more manageable product disclosure state-

ment under the five-year-old Financial Markets Conduct Act. FMA-commissioned research found the product disclosure statement was the first thing investors looked at to get a sense of a product, using it as a primary information source for decision making. Interviewees told researchers PDS was an improvement on the investment statement-prospectus disclosure regime, but were “long and repetitive”, using “academic” language and “a lot of legal terminology”. “The significant work issuers have put into PDS documents is paying off, with investors paying attention to the information,” FMA director of capital markets Garth Stanish said in a statement. – NZME

A seasonally adjusted net 9 per cent of firms surveyed in the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s quarterly survey of business opinion expect economic conditions to deteriorate over the coming months compared with a seasonally adjusted 11 per cent in the prior quarter. “Business confidence had fallen sharply in the December 2017 quarter in the wake of the new Labour-led government taking office, and this pessimism has carried over into the first quarter of 2018,” said NZIER principal economist Christina Leung. The headline confidence reading, however, is more pessimistic than firms’ own trading with a net 15 per cent experiencing increased activity in the March quarter versus 10 per cent in the prior quarter. Winter comfort made easy L

ook outside. There’s absolutely no doubt that winter has arrived. And in the kitchen that’s pretty exciting. Most of us are over summer salads and will be looking forward to the heartier comfort food of winter. That doesn’t need to come with stacks of dishes and hours of effort. One pot, pan or baking dish meals make quick and easy work of dinner and they don’t leave hours of cleaning up behind them.

Baked bangers and mash 1kg floury potatoes, peeled and chopped 50g butter 1/4 C milk 1/4 C chives, finely chopped 4 spring onions, finely chopped 1/2 T olive oil 8 pork sausages 2 onions, peeled and sliced 1T balsamic vinegar 1T chutney 1/2 C red wine 1 1/2 C chicken stock 2 1/2 t cornflour, dissolved in 1T water 6 sprigs thyme, leaves removed 1C frozen peas ■ Boil the potatoes until tender, drain and then mash with butter and milk. ■ Stir through chopped chives and finely-chopped spring onions. ■ Heat oven to 180°C. ■ Fry sausages for 3 to 4 minutes until brown. ■ Cut into chunks and put into a 1 1/2-litre ovenproof dish, or into 4 individual baking dishes. ■ Fry onion for 6 to 8 minutes, add balsamic vinegar, redcurrant jelly and red wine and bring to the boil. ■ Add stock and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. ■ Stir in cornflour and add the thyme leaves. ■ Pour gravy over sausages. Scatter over peas and top with the mash. ■ Bake for 30 minutes until golden.

Pasta bake 175g pasta spirals, cooked until just tender 2T oil 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped 500g mince 4 stalks celery, sliced 2T flour 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 cube beef stock 25g butter 1/4 C flour 1 1/4 C milk 1t mustard powder 1/2 C tasty cheese, grated ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Heat oil in a pan. Cook peeled and chopped onion 4 to 5 minutes. ■ Add mince and celery and cook 5 to 8 minutes. ■ Add flour and cook 1 minute until mixture thickens. ■ Stir in chopped tomatoes and 1/2 C boiling water. ■ Bring to the boil, stir in stock cube and season to taste. ■ Simmer 2 to 3 minutes. ■ Remove from heat and stir in pasta. Tip into a gratin dish. ■ Melt butter in a pan and add flour. Cook 1 to 2 minutes to form a thick paste. ■ Add milk slowly, beating well until mixture comes to the boil. ■ Remove from heat. ■ Add mustard powder and half the grated cheese. Season to taste. ■ Spoon sauce over pasta.

pan over moderate heat and add the onion, garlic and zest. Fry gently, without browning for 10 minutes until the onion is soft. Add the stock and diced potato and bring to the boil. Simmer 10 minutes until the potato is soft. Add the peas and boil gently for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and purée using a wand blender or food processor.

To serve, pour the soup into bowls, top with the cooked prawns and garnish with mint leaves. ■ Tip: Defrost your prawns quickly by placing in a colander and running them under cold water. Personal bests for gymnasts Dynamic Gymnastic Sports Club members tasted plenty of success on Sunday across two different competitions. Club gymnasts took part in the Awesome Autumn Classic at the Christchurch School of Gymnastics, the first competition of the season, and came away with three podium places in the iron category. Amy McLachlan was first on the floor, Zoe Ritchie was second on the beam and vault, while Charlotte Bota Wilson achieved personal best scores in the same category. At the same time as that event was being held, the club also had athletes competing in the first trampoline competition interclub (TCI) competition at ICE Trampoline in Rangiora. The team reached an all-time high, coming home with 18 medals. Medal eludes Snowden They gave the leaders a fright, but Ashburton sharpshooter John Snowden and his team-mate Brian Carter, have come up short in the bid for a medal at the Commonwealth Games. The pair, who were shooting in the Queen’s Prize Pairs yesterday at the Belmont Full Bore Range on the Gold Coast finished up in fifth position overall after giving themselves a decent sniff at the medals with good displays of shooting yesterday. Heading into the day in eighth position, the pair were clearly a lot more at home over the longer distances of 900 and 1000 metres registering some tidy scores that sat comparatively with other shooters from different countries. Ultimately though, the mountain was too tall for the pair to climb and they had to settle for fifth placing with a score of 581.50v not far off bronze medal winners, Scotland with 582.53v. The pair will have to dust themselves off and get ready to move on today when they begin the Queen’s Prize Singles. Snowden’s form, based on his performance during the pairs, would see him in with a shot at the medals. He was the third highest individual scorer across the two days of shooting in the pairs but only on v bulls scored with the same overall score as the other two shooters. The shooting will consist of competition today and tomorrow before a return for the finals on Saturday.

Villumsen adds to medal collection Linda Villumsen has claimed her third Commonwealth Games medal in the time trial yesterday, adding silver to her collection after a solid ride on the Gold Coast. While the 33-year-old couldn’t defend her Glasgow gold, she was hardly expected to, with Australia’s Katrin Garfoot utterly dominating the entire field to romp to victory by 54.92 seconds. Instead, Villumsen rode well, complementing her silver medal from Delhi with a comfortable second-place showing in a race which largely went by the form guide for all the favourites. Villumsen saw off England’s Hayley Simmonds by 19.08 seconds, with Simmonds comfortably claiming bronze in a diluted field lacking real contenders for the eventual trio of medallists. Scotland’s Katie Archibald finished in fourth – two minutes down on Garfoot, while New Zealand’s Rushlee Buchanan performed credibly to finish in fifth, 2.31 back from gold, and 1.17 down on the podium. Brad Mathas has run a personal best to make the 800m final at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games while sprinter Joseph Millar has made the 200m semi-finals. Mathas ran one minute 46.32 seconds in coming fourth in the first heat at Carrara Stadium yesterday. It beat his previous best of 1.46.44 set in Canberra in January this year. Perrett Rakaia’s champion Rakaia celebrated its sporting heroes at the weekend, with outstanding pistol shooter Kay Perrett taking home the biggest prize of the night as senior sportsperson of the year. Perrett also won the outstanding coach award and was nominated for outstanding referee or umpire of the year. The busy coach and competitor is qualified to judge at international events and sits on the national judges council for her sport. When Perrett started shooting in 2011 she was the only female shooter in the South Island and designed her own target practice system. She moved through the ranks to finish with a national ranking of third in the sport pistol and fourth in the air pistol. In 2017 she competed for New Zealand in the Oceania Games and Commonwealth Shooting Championships, where she finished in fifth and sixth respectively. She coached the Ashburton College air pistol team in 2016 and 2017, guiding them to historic medals in the South Island championship. One of her shooters also won gold at the junior air pistol nationals. The junior sportsperson award went to Tayla Davidson, a karate champion in the kata and kumite disciplines with medals at national and Australian events. The outstanding junior team was the Rakaia Pony Club equestrian team (Jamie Bird, Jayden Bird, Olivia Harkerss, Dan Harkerss and Lauren Jones). The senior sports team award was a tie between the two Rakaia Golf Club teams, the ladies’ open pennant team and the ladies veteran pennant team. Rugby referee Christopher O’Malley won the outstanding referee award, recognising 10 years officiating in Heartland senior competitions in North Otago, West Coast and Mid Canterbury. Sports awards organiser Mandy Hurst said the biennial awards were a great way to recognise the huge talent in Rakaia’s community.

Brisbane captain Darius Boyd will leave the beef between Wayne Bennett and Nathan Brown to the two NRL coaches. Easter goal for smart 4YO Progressive mare Sacred Rhythm is on target for a Group Two feature. The lightly-tried daughter of the late Pentire has bounced through her latest winning run in top shape ahead of her next appearance at Pukekohe Park. “We’re aiming her at the Easter Handicap on Saturday week and we’ll play it by ear after that,” said Kieran Murdoch, who trains in partnership with her mother. “She’s unbelievably well and she’s a lovely mare to have around the stable, she just gets on with her job.” Sacred Rhythm has won five of her 10 starts, three of them from her current quarters. “She originally came to us for pre-training after her three-year-old season,” Murdoch said. “Her feet are relatively flat and she was finding the sand track (at Cambridge) too abrasive on her soles, the beach here is better for her longevity and we can’t fault her.” Another talent suited to the environment is the exciting Mihaul, who will make his second appearance from the stable in Saturday’s Rating 75 sprint at Te Rapa. He was unbeaten in two runs for Allan Sharrock and subsequent leg issues resulted in the Taranaki trainer advising his owners to send the Iffraaj gelding north. Landers return to the fray By Steve HepBurn The Highlanders will get back to work this week, knowing what is in front of them and their destiny is still in their hands. The side had its second bye in the competition in seven weeks – do not bother asking why, it just did – and now gets ready to take on the Brumbies at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday night. A few years ago teams would get four points for a bye. If that was still the case, the Highlanders would be still be behind the three New Zealand teams above them – the Hurricanes, Crusaders and Chiefs. What is becoming clear in this competition is the games between the four New Zealand teams still in the reckoning are going to be very important. So far the Highlanders have bagged a win and two losses against the other three teams. They next meet a New Zealand team when they face the Blues on April 20 at Eden Park. The Blues – who could still get in the playoffs but, then again, there could be peace in the Middle East – have been all over the place but must be due for a good performance. Sky suddenly in box seat B

e careful what you wish for. TVNZ had a golden chance to strike a blow for free-to-air sports coverage at the Commonwealth Games. Five days in, they’ve just about knocked themselves into oblivion. There are people who are seriously p!@@#$ off with TVNZ. Free coverage was never going to rule again, but done well it can have a significant place in the new order, satisfying a bulk audience and even keeping a sport like rugby in better contact with the masses. But people at under-fire subscriber sports giant Sky TV will be leaping with optimism over TVNZ’s Gold Coast coverage and public response. Their share price might even be leaping. I was a big critic of Sky TV’s packages, which were inflexible and became comparatively expensive in the rapidly changing media landscape. But Sky’s one-stop-shop is actually very impressive if they can sort out their billing policies, which they have started to do. From the moment TVNZ

started hitting viewers with massive slabs of adverts during the Gold Coast events, it was time to think again. TVNZ is now being hit with criticism over the decision to stream Kiwi gold medal attempts over the internet when lesser contests, some not even involving New Zealanders, are on their traditional channels. For example: A colleague who was desperate to watch Joelle King go for gold in squash was apoplectic. With the match being streamed, and not wanting to watch it on a little phone screen, he initially went to bed with the radio commentary on. (TVNZ decided to show only the final stages of the clash between King and England’s Sarah-Jane Perry on air). His response is typical about the coverage, it seems. Maybe all the techno boffins at TVNZ are out of step with middle New Zealand on that one. There are a lot of people who still see their computer as an advanced encyclopaedia and a stream as something with water in it. Not everyone is a natural when it comes to linking the in-

ternet with their big TV monitor. I have some sympathy with TVNZ on this one, because streaming is the way of the future.

But in New Zealand for now, technology and knowledge haven’t quite hit the point where streaming can be regarded as mainstream. Sports broadcasters face huge challenges, one of them being that many of the so-called millennials regard it as normal to get virtually everything for free off the internet. Sky have tried to address the cost issue with a fairly decent price reduction if you are prepared to cut the basic package in half. And subscribers who do stay on the old package now get the excellent Soho channel for “free”. In other words, Sky have responded and will also soon have a new boss for a new era. Ironically, it is suddenly TVNZ which looks out of date, flooding the coverage with advertisements for an audience used to watching a wide range of major sport largely un-interrupted. Sky, sensibly, prefer to bombard viewers with advertisements at other times. A lot of those advertisements on Sky are about Sky. The best advertisement for Sky sports coverage right now is TVNZ. - NZME

Consistency paying off

Former Ashburton golfer, Daniel Pearce is strutting his stuff on the greens of New Zealand in a rich vein of form. Pearce, who now hails from the Hawke’s Bay, won the Akarana Open on the weekend by an impressive three shots – his second consecutive win on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour after winning the Mgamotu Classic back in October last year. The 29-year-old produced consistent golf across the four rounds at the Akarana Golf Course over the weekend to see him home against a strong field of players.

He opened with rounds of 66, 64 and 66 before producing a composed 65 on the final day to hold off the late challenge of defending champion, Gareth Paddison. Pearce’s iron was his best friend throughout the tournament and he told Golf New Zealand that his short-play won him the tournament. “I think I played the par threes seven or eight under this week, which is something I have never done in a tournament before, so to have my iron play going so good was a nice feeling,” he said. “This gives me a lot of confidence, the game is in pretty good shape and I now

know I can win a golf tournament even when I’m hitting the driver so badly.” Pearce said he enjoyed being back plying his trade on familiar land and said that without the ability to play in such tournaments, it would make the struggle of being on the international scene even harder. “It’s awesome to win out here. “The Jennian Homes Charles Tour is a great breeding ground for New Zealand golfers and without this it’s really hard to progress yourself because we play overseas a lot. “But if you’ve got nothing at home to play, to develop yourself and learn how to

win, it’s really hard to emulate that when you go overseas.” The weekend’s result has Pearce sitting in a good position on the leaderboard for the Jennian Homes Trophy which he currently leads comfortably with two wins from three tournaments. The competition wraps up in a fortnight at the Carrus Open where Pearce will be out to assert his domination. As another bonus, Pearce is now on top of the Order of Merit for the New Zealand PGA – jumping up 12 spots from his previous position to sit on top of the list of some of the best golfers in the land.
