Hundreds will turn out tonight at the Hotel Ashburton for the annual Mid Canterbury Sports Awards.

It appears Ashburton District councillors have hit the nail on the head with their rates spending plan for the next 10 years. With five days to run until submissions close on its long term plan, more than 100 have been lodged with 94 currently listed on its website. And of those submitters, more than half agree with how rates money should be spent, particularly for a second urban bridge across the Ashburton River When it comes to the bridge, the council’s preferred option is for the cost, about $37 million, to be split, with 80 per cent

paid by the NZ Transport Agency and 20 per cent through council borrowings, serviced by rates. Other options are for the agency to pay 51 per cent (its usual subsidy rate) or for the council to carry the full cost giving it full control over when the bridge is built. Half of the submitters, 46, supported the council’s preferred option, but only eight were happy for the council to carry the full cost. A number ticked all three options, suggesting the council to do whatever it took to complete the project; a few, however, wanted the second bridge canned. In the long term plan the council has

come up with three options for developments at the EA Networks Centre. These include a climbing wall that will cost $300,000. Work on this would start next year and be completed in 2020. Pressure on the pool complex from learn-to-swim classes has seen a swim school extension and a splash deck activity centre for older children included. This would come with a $5.2 million price tag and is planned to be built in 2020/2021.

Traffic lights have been part of a suite of roading inmprovements that have been on the drawing board for Tinwald since 2004, resident Helen Eccleston says. The Wilkin Street resident has lived in Tinwald for years and said she’s watched traffic volumes increase to a point where she and husband Thomas allow extra time when they’re heading out on the short drive to Ashburton. Often they, like many living on Tinwald’s east, find themselves driving the long way to town, down the highway, back along Melcombe Street and under the viaduct so they can turn left to town instead of right. She’s been involved in pushing the case for lights in Tinwald since 2004 and she’s ‘spitting mad’ that they’ve dropped completely off the radar. No improvements to State Highway One through Tinwald have been included in the NZ Transport Agency’s draft investment plan for the next 10 years. “They say we won’t get lights because they’re focusing on safety. This is about safety. When you’re trying to get through here at busy times you’re inclined to take chances,” Eccleston said. She’s kept a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings that date back to 2004 when the community first started pushing for safety improvements on the Tinwald section of the highway. “I remember we had meetings in the Tinwald Hall and were told we’d have lights within a couple of years. It’s been 14 years now.” At one point, Eccleston said,

She also recalls seeing quite detailed plans that showed new road markings and traffic light options. Archived Guardian stories show that lights in Tinwald were talked about in 2005, 2006, when

it was suggested they could be in place in three years and in 2007 when the timeframe had moved out to within 10 years. They dropped off the 10 year plan in 2009. That failure to address traffic log jams on the highway meant that Tinwald’s east is now becoming a hard sell for real estate agents.

And while there had been no drop in property values, real estate agent Jill Quaid said the issues with trying to turn right onto the highway to access Ashburton was reducing the pool of buyers willing to move to Tinwald’s east. “We’re just getting this bit of resistance and it’s been building for a while,” she said.

Timely and safe access to the highway and then into Ashburton was paramount to people living in Tinwald’s east, Quaid said. She suggested the council should can the second bridge, bite the bullet and pay for traffic lights to be installed. Walnut Avenue lights should be treated with the same urgency, she said.

Rates plan receives ratepayer nod From P1 The third option is for sports fields around the centre to be developed on a cost share basis with users. This project is anticipated to cost $4.8 million with

ratepayers funding interest on $2.4 million worth of borrowings. No time frame has been set, but this project is unlikely to be carried out before 2024. The early submitters are strong

supporters of all three developments with almost half supporting both the climbing wall and the swim school development while one-third supported the sports fields development.

A number of submitters supported all three options. Some did not want any to proceed. Submissions close on Monday at 5pm and can be made online, www.ashburtondc.govt.nz, by

Rolls-Royce brings a touch of class to Methven By SuSan SandyS

Methven vintage car buff Murray Hawkes brings a touch of class wherever he goes, thanks to his Rolls-Royce Phantom. The 1928 to 1929 vehicle was one of three shipped to Australia originally by aspirin developer Alfred Nicholas. Following Nicholas’s death they were turned into ambulances to serve a Melbourne area military hospital during World War Two. Hawkes bought his car, which was rebodied as an open tourer in Australia following the war, before later being registered in New Zealand, from a car collector in Carterton. He is a Rolls-Royce fan through and through, and refers to the Phantom as “glorious”. “It purrs, and it’s actually very nice to drive,” he said. He marvels at Rolls-Royce’s technological foresight, and points out some of the innovations in the engine are an aluminium head, and roller rockers. “It’s the sort of thing that hot rodders do to Holdens and Falcons, but this was 1928.” Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce fans from throughout the South Island are looking forward to a run to Snowdon Station this Sunday, held by the southern region of the New Zealand Rolls-Royce and Bentley Club. Many are expected to stop off in Methven on their way, for an early lunch. Vintage Rolls-Royces are generally quite rare and can range up to hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

A big night for this newspaper The Ashburton Guardian will have its name proudly up in lights tonight alongside some of New Zealand’s most recognisable mastheads at the annual Voyager Awards in Auckland. The awards are the showpiece night for media each year with excellence recognised and some of the biggest names in the industry coming together to celebrate each other’s successes. The Guardian was earlier this year named a finalist in the Newspaper of the Year category for a paper with a circulation of less

than 30,000 readers – a significant achievement for a small independent newspaper, up against some of the other mastheads from within the New Zealand media landscape. With a circulation of just over 4000 the Guardian is the smallest, in terms of circulation of the five finalists and the only South Island based paper on the list. Editor Matt Markham said the

honour of being named as a finalist was huge in itself. “We’re up against some serious players in the newspaper game so to be sitting there alongside them is something we are very proud of.” “What the announcement of being a finalist did was give a firm nod in the direction of traditional newspaper reporting. “Keeping communities informed with strong stories of a local interest is still the cornerstone of what we do and while some other mastheads around us

appear to have lost some sight of that, we continue to give it a high importance.” The news of being named as a finalist comes hot on the heels of the Guardian being the only newspaper in New Zealand to show a growth in its readership in the latest round of ABC Audit figures. A Methven coffee shop is doing its bit for saving the world, one cup at a time. The Pantry sandwich coffee house on Main Street has introduced a mug wall, where customers can choose a cup for their takeaway coffee. “The whole idea is for us to become more self-sustainable, and use less disposable coffee cups,” owner Victoria Totty said. “I think it’s easy for people when a café provides the facilities for them to make a change.” The mug wall has about 35 quirky installations, from mugs crafted in far away places such as Ireland, to those retrieved from long-forgotten China cabinets. Totty said two pink mugs with gold trim were particularly special, as they had been donated by a lady whose mother had been a regular customer prior to passing away. Others had simply been sourced from op shops or donated by customers who had cleaned out their cupboards. She said she was always interested in new mug donations, and any which did not make the wall were donated to the Red Cross. Totty said those using the

A dozen people have been hospitalised after a suspected gas leak at a Qantas office in central Auckland. And more than 100 were evacuated and checked by emergency services after reports of the leak at the Victoria Street building about 9am yesterday. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said a number of people were “significantly unwell” and vomiting, and witnesses reported some were stumbling out on the street. At this stage it’s believed this was caused by fumes and is being investigated,” a spokesman said. - AAP

Car flips on to roof A car flipped on to its roof in a central Auckland crash yesterday. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said they were called to the single-car crash about 10.30am on College Hill in Freemans Bay. When fire crews arrived there was nobody trapped in the vehicle, he said. - NZME

Swallowed by a sinkhole An Otago man who was swallowed up by a sinkhole in his backyard two days ago has been ordered by council to leave the property immediately. Andrew Thomson, who thought he would be buried alive when a sinkhole opened up under his feet and he fell three metres into the earth, has been told to stay out of his Portobello home until engineers deem it safe to re-enter. The incident happened on Tuesday when he went outside to feed his fish.

Gas leak hospitalises

“I realised I hadn’t fed the fish in a few days, so I popped on down to do so – and immediately fell through the earth,” he told Newstalk ZB. “A fairly harrowing experience, I would say.” Yesterday, the Dunedin City Council visited Thomson at home and issued a notice to vacate the property. He cannot return until an engineer has come on site, assessed the property and given the all-clear. Until then, it was not inhab-

itable and he was not sure how long that would take to resolve. The council response was fair, he said, as he had questioned the safety of the property himself. He was working with the council to get a solution sorted as soon as possible. After he fell in the sinkhole he was stuck for about half an hour, which felt more like an eternity, he told Newstalk ZB. The situation felt even more dire given there were road works happening nearby, drowning out his cries for help.

“Really fortunately, a neighbour up the road did hear – I’ve never met him before. He came on down to investigate. “He nearly slipped in himself, actually. It started to give way when he got close. “If he hadn’t [found me], I literally would’ve been there overnight and that was just terrifying.” The neighbour sought help from the nearby Fulton Hogan workers, who managed to get him out safely. - NZME

Two fraudsters have admitted their roles in an $8.3 million Ponzi scheme that sucked in 900 investors and paid for their jet-set lifestyles, million-dollar homes and flash cars. Jimmie Kevin McNicholl, 56, director of Arena Capital Limited, which traded as BlackfortFX, pleaded guilty to fraud at Christchurch District Court yesterday in relation to the sophisticated scheme masked as a foreign exchange brokerage. Lance Jack Ryan, also known as Lance Jared Thompson, 44, has also been charged with fraud in relation to the matter. McNicholl and Ryan will be sentenced on June 20. - NZME

Benefit fraud A Dunedin couple’s $60,000 benefit fraud was deception perpetrated over a number of years and a joint enterprise, Judge Michael Turner said sentencing each to home detention. Leah Tamara Smith, 28, had been convicted of eight charges of dishonestly using a document and two of obtaining by deception. Stevie Fong, 33, had been convicted of four charges of dishonestly using a document and one of causing loss by deception. Both had pleaded guilty. - NZME

MindPlus curators programme an award finalist Ashburton’s Museum has scored a finals berth in a competition that cements its place as one of the country’s best. The MindPlus curators programme the museum ran late last year is a finalist in the Museums Aotearoa Awards, for the most innovative public programme. Last year 32 students from 13 schools around the district took part in the programme that culminated in an exhibition and hands-on activities designed by children for children and families. The programme was called MindPlus Curators Present Patterns. Museum director Tanya Robinson said that it was usually only three or four of New Zealand’s largest museums that made it to the finals, those with a large number of staff and a lot of resources. “Knowing that, it is wonderful our museum has been recognised. It’s great news for the students and team at Ashburton Museum. It shows that our ideas and programmes are right there with the biggest and best museums in New Zealand.” The innovation section recognises programmes that demonstrate new thinking and approaches that others can learn from. Winners of each of the 10 categories in the awards will be announced at the Museums Aotearoa conference, in Christchurch, on May 20. The man behind NZ’s $50m drug ring Suppression orders have lapsed for the man behind London Underground after a bid to overturn convictions in Supreme Court fails. The identity of the businessman behind New Zealand’s $50 million designer drug ring can now be revealed. Christopher Chase, 44, was one of the pioneers of party pills and one of the first to sell BZP “legal highs” in the country. When BZP was banned in 2008, Chase’s company London Underground switched to a new chemical compound called mephedrone, or 4-MMC. These pills were marketed and sold under the radar to compete with Ecstasy, a Class-B drug, in the Auckland dance and night-

not specifically banned under the Misuse of Drugs Act. However, a covert police inves-

tigation, Operation Ark, targeted London Underground and Chase was among 23 people arrested in November 2011. The police alleged the London Underground tablets were not legal and in fact were analogues, or “substantially similar” in molecular structure, to illegal drugs. This was part of a worldwide phenomenon where chemists were tweaking the chemicals to skirt the boundaries of the law, the police alleged. Testing also revealed the powders London Underground thought was mephedrone, or 4-MMC, was in fact methedrone, or 4-MEC. Nearly 255kg of powder was imported over an 18 month period; enough to make almost 1.3

million tablets. The profits were enormous, with each pill costing around $1 to make. London Underground sold them, at wholesale, for between $17 and $23 a pill. Chase maintained his innocence, pointing to legal advice he received, at a High Court trial in 2015 which ran for 18 weeks. The jury decided both 4-MMC and 4-MEC were “substantially similar” to methcathinone, a Class-B drug, which made them analogues. Analogues are considered Class-C drugs and in sentencing Chase to 10 years in prison, Justice Peter Woodhouse said the street value of pills sold was nearly $50 million. - NZME

Taytay targets Kardashian Just as it seems Taylor Swift has finally resolved her feud with longtime nemesis Katy Perry, the singer has dug up her differences with Kim Kardashian. The songstress spoke about being labelled a snake by the reality star in 2016 as she performed the first concert of her Reputation tour in Arizona. When she performed Look What You Made Me Do she wheeled out a massive mechanical snake. “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on,” the 28-year-old said to cheers. “ I went through some times when I didn’t know if I was gonna get to do this anymore.” Flames rising after an attack in an area known to have numerous Syrian army military bases, in Kisweh, south of Damascus, Syria.

Israel strikes back Iranian forces based in Syria fired 20 rockets at Israeli frontline military positions in the occupied Golan Heights, the Israeli military said, triggering an Israeli reprisal and escalating already heightened tensions in what appeared to be the most serious violence in years. The Israeli military said its Iron Dome rocket defence system intercepted some of the incoming projectiles, while others caused only minimal damage. Syria’s capital of Damascus shook with sounds of explosions, and firing by Syrian air defences over the city was heard throughout the night. An Israeli official said Israel was targeting Iranian positions inside Syria. Syria’s state news agency SANA quoted a Syrian military official as saying Israeli missiles hit air defence positions, radar stations and a weapons warehouse, but claiming most incoming rockets were intercepted.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said earlier that Iran’s Al Quds force fired the rockets at several Israeli bases, though he would not say how Israel determined the Iranian involvement. The incoming attack set off air raid sirens in the Israelicontrolled Golan, which was captured from Syria in the 1967 war. Israel views this attack very severely, Conricus said. He said Israel had responded, but did not provide details. “This event is not over,” he said. Syria’s state media said Syrian air defences had intercepted “hostile Israeli missiles” that were fired over southwestern Damascus. Hours later, state-run AlIkhbariya TV broadcast a live feed of Syrian air defences firing into the sky above the capital, and loud explosions and air defence firing were heard through the night. Syrian activists reported Is-

raeli airstrikes hitting targets near Damascus. One video posted online showed a large explosion and shrapnel flying in the air. Residents reported loud sounds that rocked their buildings. It was not immediately clear what was hit. An Israeli army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said on Twitter that Israel was “acting against Iranian targets inside Syria,” a rare admission by an Israeli official. Al-Ikhbariya TV said Israel also targeted military posts in southern Suweida province, including an air base, and struck near Homs in central Syria. Syrian media earlier said the hostilities began with Israeli fire at Syrian positions in southern Syria from across the border. Pro-Syrian media said Syrian missiles then fired at Israeli forces. One TV station, Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen, said at least 50 missiles were fired from Syria

at Israeli forces in the Golan Heights. Syrian media said it was the first time in years that Syrians had fired at Israeli forces in the Golan Heights. Israel has been on heightened alert in recent days, anticipating an Iranian attack following Iranian vows to retaliate to what it says are recent Israeli strikes in Syria targeting Iranian outposts. Yesterday, Syrian state media said Israel struck a military outpost near the capital of Damascus. Israel has for months repeatedly said it will not accept a permanent Iranian military presence in Syria. Iranian forces moved into Syria after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011 to back the forces of President Bashar al-Assad. As that war winds down, and Assad appears to be headed toward victory, Israel fears that Iran, along with tens of thousands of Iranian-backed Shia militiamen, will carry out attacks against Israel. -AP

Truckload of chocolate ‘worse than snow’ A truck carrying tons of liquid chocolate overturned on a motorway in Poland, blocking six lanes and turning the road into a sticky mess as the liquid chocolate began to slowly solidify. Local authorities said it would take a lot of hot water to clean up the tons of chocolate on the road, which started

turning solid as it cooled. “The cooling chocolate is worse than the snow,” Senior brigadier Bogdan Kowalski with the fire brigade of Slupca said. Local media report that the truck driver had to be taken to hospital with a broken arm. There were no other injuries. - AP

Shavaughan Ruakere is taking every opportunity to practice her moves – even in the bathroom. Head DWTS judge Camilla Sacre-Dallerup caught her dancing up a storm in the women’s toilets whilst her hair was full of dye. “What are you doing?!” says SacreDallerup. “ Ahhh!” screams Rurakere. “Yes I was practising! For the love of coriander

Coriander is a love it or hate it type of plant. In fact, I can’t really think of any other herb or vegetable that divides people as much. And it can also be quite a tricky herb to grow as it loves to bolt (head to seed), which probably doesn’t help its reputation with its detractors.

the soil is free-draining. Give it a water and then regularly water it in the morning. This will allow the water to dry off during the day and prevent disease.

But as someone who falls into the love coriander camp, I think it’s a plant every kitchen or vegetable garden should have. So here are my top tips for successful coriander growing.

Firstly, plant it now. While you can grow coriander for most of the year, now during autumn and winter when the weather is cooler, is the perfect time to plant – especially if you find it difficult to grow.

When you’ve got your seedlings, you need to find the right spot to plant. Coriander will grow well in a pot or in the garden. But if you do plant in a pot make sure it’s a deep one and pour in some good quality potting mix.

The steady, cool weather will prevent it from bolting.

If you’re growing it in the garden, at this time of the year I recommend looking for somewhere with full sun. Coriander doesn’t like damp or humid conditions. Next ensure the soil is aerated and free-draining by digging over the soil and even dig in some potting mix or compost, if required.

Distinctive and unmissable

yundai’s eye-catching, compact SUV, Kona currently has four models – two front-wheel-drive models in either entry level ($31,990) or higher specified ($36,990) Elite form. Both come with 2.0-litre, 110kW/180Nm petrol engines and six speed autos. Then there’s two 1.6-litre turbo 130 kW/265Nm all-wheel-drive models. They have dual-clutch, seven speed autos, a sportier rear suspension and cost either $36,990 or $41,990 for the Elite. While they look the same, they are quite different to drive. But no matter which is chosen you’ll be driving a distinctive but attractive looking SUV with a nicely sculpted front, shapely scalloped sides complete with contrasting, strategically placed dark grey ‘body armour’ and a neatly shaped rear. Size wise, they are a little shorter, but wider than both the Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR. Given those distinctive outside looks, the Kona cabins are much more mainstream, but nicely laid out with very practical style and function. There’s a large central tablet-style multimedia display for the Apple Carplay, Android Auto and an Auto Link system which give both connectivity and quick access to information, entertainment and comfort options. Conceptual silliness

like front-wheel drive, and will defend it to the hilt. But even I have to concede that this new concept car is ... perhaps a bit much. It comes to us via DS Automobiles – the luxury arm of French outfit PSA – and it’s called the DS E-Tense Concept. This is what the team believe “a dream car might resemble in the year 2035.” No, don’t expect to see this on the showroom floor for quite some time. On the contrary, the E-Tense is more ‘design exploration’ than a pursuit of a realistic release. “We were given complete freedom to give shape our dreams and this creative process led us to imagine a two-facetted car, capable of delivering the best of two worlds: that of providing intense, unfettered driving enjoyment, with an abundance of power, and that of blending the art of living “à la française” with autonomous motoring,” said DS design director Thierry Metroz. “In a way, DS X E-TENSE comes across as a reinterpretation of the motorcycle side-car, with a bold asymmetric stance, but on four wheels.” Without question the wildest element of the E-Tense’s exterior is the asymmetrical profile. A front ‘grill’ sits in front of the driver’s side, while the two flanking vents (both differently sized) are integrated via some trippy LED cross-hatching. While the driver gets an open-cockpit to

play with, the solitary passenger gets their own pyramid-shaped “cocoon” cabin space – accessed via a gull-wing door. At the rear, a similar spider-web formation makes up the taillight structure, while the passenger cocoon cascades down the rear into an aggressive diffuser. There are many other strange elements in the E-Tense, like bodywork that can

recover its original form after an impact, but it’s the power-train that we need to talk about. Front-wheel drive, electric-motors, and 1000kW. “Located within the front wheels, the two motors selected as the source of the all-electric DS X E-TENSE’s power provide unrivalled response,” they say. “For road use, peak power stands at 400kW (540

horsepower), a figure that rises to 1000kW (1360 horsepower) in circuit mode which allows the driver to savour the exquisite performance engineered by DS.” Perhaps DS Automobile know something about upcoming front-wheel drive technologies that the rest of us don’t? For now, this silly concept remains just that ... a concept.

Technology with style

learly Kiwis (and the rest of the world) are in love with SUVs, for last year in NZ more than 25,000 new ones were sold! They range from hard-nosed, real off-roaders to the ever-increasing numbers of two-wheel-drives designed for the urban jungle. While size-wise the Eclipse Cross slots in between the recently refreshed ASX and the larger Outlander range and shares a common platform with them, it is unique with its quite eye-catching (especially so in Brilliant Red), angular, thoroughly modern looks complete with spoiler and a dualwindow tailgate. There’s a wiper for the upper section only, but the lower section stayed remarkably clean during recent heavy rain. Being 4.4 metres long, the Eclipse Cross fits into the compact/small to medium class. It comes in either XLS or VRX models, both with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and eight-step CVT. Front-wheel-drive models cost $34,990 for the XLS, or $45,590 (both+ORCs)for the VRX as driven, complete with its generous list of extra features including a head-up display, excellent adaptive cruise control, leather interior trim, heated/ventilated front seats, LED headlights, double sunroof and dual-zone air con. The soon-to-arrive all-wheel-drive versions, with Mitsi’s three mode, electronically controlled Super All-Wheel Control will cost an additional $2000. The cabin in some respects isn’t quite

as stylish as the exterior, but is very nicely presented, especially in the VRX with its mix of soft-touch, red-stitched leather, alloy highlights and carbon fibre look-a-like inserts. Then, for both models, there’s the very smart looking and very useful centre console touchpad infotainment system and colourful central tablet-like 7.0-inch touchscreen, which my grandkids quickly mastered and then demonstrated to me how easy it was to use. While there’s no dedicated sat-nav, there’s both Apple/Android Car Play phone projection all within easy-to-use, fingertip reach. The driver and front seat passenger are very well catered for in nicely-shaped heated seats with very good space, even headroom, which is not encroached on with the presence of the double sunroof. For those in the back, their higher mounted seats are also spacious and comfortable for two, with decent head and knee room. As well there’s good views out for those seated thereon, however there’s no rear air vents and five-up, the centre seat should be occupied by the person with the best padded butt. The high lifting rear door accesses a decent 374 litres of luggage space, below which sits a space-saver spare. Eclipse’s performance matches both its body lines and your expectations, as well as bettering that of the ASX and Outlander. The refined, but very free-revving 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine,

with 112kW and 254Nm of torque (pulling power from 2000rpm to 3500rpm), proved ever-keen to get on with its job. This urgency is assisted by the way the eight-step CVT auto responds exactly as it should in keeping the engine in its sweetest spots. There’s a manual mode and paddles too for this smooth and efficient CVT, but I reckon most drivers will be more than happy to leave it to do its own thing. As is the norm for new age, 2WD SUVs, the Eclipse is nicely set up for both around town and open road driving. It’s impressively quiet at cruise, but then also showed that it can deliver sharp handling and a still-comfortable ride for those who like to enjoy driving on more challenging formed roads and likewise corners. While the steering is direct and light for around town, it firms up nicely at speed. Meanwhile the quite firmly-tuned, wellsorted suspension means the Eclipse sits relatively flat through faster corners, with minimal body movement. A small pay-off for this is that at you sometimes can be aware of state of the

rough surfaces of some of our urban streets. Both models have seven airbags plus a comprehensive standard suite of driver aids – automated emergency braking, lane departure and forward collision warnings. The VRX also has blind spot warning/ lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and an a 360-degree around view camera.

Exploring new territory K

nown as the Ford Edge in other markets, the Canadian built Endura ST-Line slots into Ford’s SUV line-up between the Escape and the large, heavy duty Everest 4WD. The fourth member of this line-up of SUVs is the small EcoSport, a new model of which also joins the fray. The Endura is a smart looking, large 5-seater, built on the latest generation platform complete with sports suspension and 20 inch alloy wheels with 255/45 tyres. It steps into the gap left by the Territory’s demise. Under the bonnet is a twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel developing 154kW @3,750 rpm and 450Nm of torque @ 2000rpm and a six speed automatic with paddle shift. Ford’s Intelligent all-wheel drive then delivers a seamless transition between front-wheel drive and all-wheel as needed. The overall fuel consumption is said to be 5.9L/100km, and the braked towing figure is 2000kg. Being top of the Endura range the ST-L (other models will follow later) it naturally features a number of premium features including active noise control, acoustic windscreen glass, active park assist as well as advanced safety features. There’s a combination of leather and suede in the plush cabin with its power adjusted, heated and cooled front seats and rear heated seats, sat/nav and dual zone temperature control. The price is expected to be $73,990 (+ORCs).

QUICK RECIPE

Mini beef and beer pies 1T vegetable oil 3 rashers rindless bacon, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 500g beef mince 1/4 C plain flour 375ml beer 1C beef stock 4 sheets frozen shortcrust pastry, thawed 3 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 egg, lightly beaten Tomato sauce, to serve ■ Preheat oven to hot, 200°C. Lightly grease three 12-hole mini-muffin pans. ■ Heat oil in a large saucepan on high. Sauté bacon and onion for 3-4 minutes until onion is tender. ■ Add mince. Brown well for 4-5 minutes, breaking up lumps with the back of a spoon as it cooks. ■ Blend in flour. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Gradually stir in

beer and stock. Bring to boil, stirring. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, until mixture reduces and thickens. Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Cool filling for 10 minutes, then chill until cold.

■ Meanwhile, using a 6.5cm cutter, cut 9 rounds from each shortcrust pastry sheet. Press 1 round into each muffin pan hole. Using a 5.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from each puff pastry sheet. ■ Spoon 2 heaped teaspoons of chilled filling into each muffin pan hole, brushing edge with a little egg. Top each pie with smaller pastry rounds. ■ Press gently around the edge to seal. Brush the tops with remaining egg. Using a sharp knife, make two small slits for air holes in the top of each pie. ■ Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and puffed. Win or lose, we’re still winners T

here’s been some big moments in the almost 140year history of the Ashburton Guardian, but tonight could be one of the biggest. A shot at being recognised amongst our media peers as a leader in the industry through the Voyager Media Awards is, in the media scene, akin to a sporting group winning a Halberg Award. But whether we win or whether we lose tonight in our bid for the Newspaper of the Year Award, it’s already a huge success for the traditional forms of journalism in print media. Due to our incredible luck at not being constrained by the demands of a corporate organisation we’ve been able to continue

to do what this paper has done for almost a century and a half and that is bring the news of this community, to the people of this community. As the media landscape around us changes and the big papers, that so often dominated that attention, seemingly begin to dwindle and turn their focus to other platforms, we’ve tried to stay true to our core values and ultimately it is that, I believe,

which has aided us in being named as a finalist tonight. We know that you, our loyal readers, still want a good local news story. You want to know what impacts you – not what is taking a toll on a region more than 1000 kilometres away. ton App and are continuing to work towards ensuring we don’t jeopardise our printed edition by bringing the bare news as it happens and then taking it more in-depth for the newspaper. It’s a tricky balancing act – and one we still haven’t got quite right, but as long as we keep those key, core values of being a newspaper we will get there. Tonight’s challenge won’t be easy. The four papers we are up against in the circulation of less than 30,000 category is a tough bunch, including the Waikato Times who has a strong record in the title’s history and with a circulation of more than 18,000, they actually have almost four and a half times more readers than us.

Our hope is that our continued drive for strong community news, mixed with opinion and reader value plus sport may carry us a long way with the judging panel. As the only newspaper in the country to have shown growth in the last quarter of the ABC readership we also look decent on paper too, so hopefully that helps. But, a result is only a part of the whole event really. Knowing that the Ashburton Guardian is going to be mentioned among some of the most respected and successful newspapers in the country is enough of a victory in itself. Of course, bringing home a trophy wouldn’t be too bad either.

Round we need to go I

t’s Wednesday evening, around 6pm. I am driving from Allenton to Tinwald. I pass the EA Networks Centre entry on River Terrace and come to a standstill. Traffic is backed up. The line-up in my mirror soon reaches back to Oak Grove. What’s going on? An hour earlier I passed Goldberg and a concerned member of the public sitting on the footpath between the bridge and the ‘compound’. I shake my head and think, a fresh out of hospital Goldberg hasn’t taken on board advice to take it easy again and has ordered an ambo ride home or back to hospital. Hang on! That was an hour ago. Surely they would have scooped him up by now and traffic would be flowing nicely again? Several cars in front and behind me did U-turns and headed off in the Havelock Street direction. Not the safest of manoeuvres on River Terrace. Also once I rounded the bend I saw several cars head into the industrial area, maybe trying their luck around the old dump

road? I was in no rush and had Maddy with me for company, even though her vocab only extends to, “Hi, Dadda, Mum mum, ta and No” we had a good yak. Although I wasn’t in a rush I was still thinking of ways to beat the traffic, is that just a bloke thing? It’s funny, because we are not used to sitting in traffic here in Ashburton, when we have to, it’s like our heads have been chopped off. I’m not sure exactly how long it took to get from River Terrace to the bridge, but I’m guessing 15 minutes tops, but it seemed a whole lot longer than that. So once over the bridge I saw no sign of Goldberg and traffic seemed to flow a bit quicker, although there looked like a fair old line of cars ahead of me

through Tinwald. So what’s going on? Is that just the norm now between 5pm and 6.30pm? Are the lights at the new Countdown corner, not working as they hoped? I know a lot of people don’t know how to merge properly at those lights and I wish there was a big ‘Merge like a Zip’ sign either side of those lights. The amount of near misses I have seen there is not funny. Then Thursday morning I rock into work and start preparing the local news and the lead story is mayor Favel is not a happy camper because the NZTA have axed traffic lights in Tinwald and Walnut Avenue from their 10-year plan. In my humble opinion we don’t need more traffic lights. We need roundabouts. Not, dollar each way ones like the current one at Walnut Ave, which is kinda two lanes but not really. That one needs to be bigger and definitely two lanes, right the way round it. The approaches will need to be widened and made two lanes

also, so those turning left are not held up by those going straight through or turning right. Then add three roundabouts in Tinwald, Carter’s Terrace, Wilkin Street and Graham Street corners. They don’t need to be two lanes, but do need plenty of good signage around them. Here’s the most important bit! EDUCATION! Teach everybody how to use a roundabout properly, so that traffic flows through them as it’s meant to. Having to give way to one direction will make life so much easier for those people living on the east side of Tinwald when they need to get onto State Highway One. Just my thoughts. Containment ‘undermined’ Black market cattle sales and lack of compliance with animal tracking rules have undermined the fight against the spread of Mycoplasma bovis. Biosecurity officials say that the unauthorised movements of cattle has made containment difficult and led to the spread of the illness. The disease, which has already led to the culling of thousands of cows, has spread “beyond all expectation” in the last six days, biosecurity officials say. The number of farms under regulatory control for Mycoplasma bovis disease has jumped from 130 properties to 290 over that period, Biosecurity New Zealand head Roger Smith told MPs at a briefing at Parliament yesterday. That meant movement of cattle was being restricted while testing for the disease was being carried out. It is now possible that Mycoplasma bovis may not be eradicated, and officials will instead

have to work on containing it instead. So far, 38 properties have tested positive for the disease in the North and South Islands. The first case was detected 300 days ago in Oamaru, but Smith said the number of farms requiring testing had hugely increased in the last week. “The spread has, in the last six days, gone totally above all expectations in modelling,” he said. It was unclear whether it was a one-week blip or whether the disease was reaching epidemic proportions, he said. Biosecurity NZ’s director of response services Geoff Gwyn said the extent of the disease’s spread would become clear in the six to 12 days. For now, biosecurity officials were still focusing on eradicating the disease, but Gywn conceded that focus may have to switch to containment. “What’s happened over the last six days is that long-term management or containment is prob-

Xero nearing a profit Accounting software firm Xero is closing in on profitability, narrowing its full-year losses by 60 per cent to $27.9 million and continuing to grow sales. In the 2018 financial year to March 31, the Wellington-based company delivered its first positive operating performance of $26m since it was founded in 2006, compared with a $28.6m loss last year. It also increased operating revenue by 38 per cent to $406.6m and added 351,000 subscribers, reaching total subscriber numbers of just under 1.4 million. t has been a mixed week for investors following US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and his rhetoric to impose sanctions on the oil-rich nation. The NZX 50 has steadily gained, rising to its highest level in six weeks, however volume has been light. We have seen volatility in the share price of a number of companies, namely The a2 Milk Company and Fletcher Building, ahead of the rebalancing of the MSCI Index, as investors try and predict which companies will be included and which will be dropped. The global reporting season, which is all but finished, saw 73 per cent of companies beat earnings estimates and 76 per cent reporting better than expected sales. However, as the global reporting season comes to an end, New Zealand and Australia’s starts to pick up. The new Governor for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Adrian Orr, kept the official cash rate at 1.75 per cent and that it is likely to remain on hold for a considerable period. However, this statement varied from previous rhetoric with the Governor saying the direction of the next move could be up or down and the likelihood of either is equally weighted. Orr commented economic growth and employment remain close to sustainable levels but inflation is still below the central

bank’s target point of 2 per cent. For the first time, the RBNZ must officially take employment into consideration after signing a new policy agreement to support the maximum levels of sustainable growth within the economy. He noted, employment growth is expected to continue to outpace growth in the labour force, leading to further tightening of the labour market. The Reserve Bank’s forecast now predicts the OCR to rise in December 2019, compared to a prior forecast of June. Orr said the monetary policy may need to be adjusted as new data or information becomes available. The New Zealand dollar fell after the announcement. Across the Tasman, accounting software company Xero reported a smaller annual loss yesterday thanks to a rise in customer numbers. The company’s net loss narrowed to $27.8 million in the year ending March, down from a loss of $69.1 million, a year earlier. Total revenue for the year rose around 38 per cent to $406.6 million. Its share price was at an all-time high this week, however dropped as much as 2.0 per cent following the result.

Earlier in the week, the company benefited from a number of positive analyst research notes highlighting the company’s longterm growth potential. The Australian financial sector continued to face headwinds as the royal commission continued to probe alleged misconduct in the sector. AMP saw resignations of three of its non-executive directors while Commonwealth Bank announced it will pay A$25 million to settle legal costs with the corporate regulator over bank bill swap rates. Locally, Westpac posted a $482m profit and said it was confident in its systems and processes and will cooperate fully with regulators, in the wake of the royal commission’s investigations. Meanwhile, Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison announced with the release of the Federal Budget, that Australia will return to a surplus a year earlier than forecast. The budget also included tax cuts for low and middle income earners, however were not as large as had been expected. The April jobs report in the US saw weaker than expected job growth, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.9 per cent, its lowest level in over 17 years. Lots to like about Longford Connections of Longford are bullish about the bargain buy’s prospects at Ashburton today. The four-year-old has prospered since moving south and he will be chasing the third win of his preparation in the Matt Smith Construction Rating 75 1600m. “To me he should be winning. “The only concern I have is that it’s his seventh run this campaign but he’s working well and the track will be to his liking,” cotrainer Richard Didham said. Longford won once from 12 starts from the Cambridge stable of Stephen Marsh before his move to Riccarton. “We paid $1800 for him off Gavelhouse and he’s now won and placed on a Premier day so we’re more than pleased with him,” Didham said. “We picked up a steal and syndicated him and we think he’ll keep going on with it.” Longford finished fourth at Riccarton at his latest appearance and Didham said the return to a mile would be more to the Cecconi gelding’s liking. “We made a bit of a blue dropping him back to 1400m and they went slowly and when they took off he got left a bit flat-footed. “He’s done well since and we’re really happy with him.” A course and distance winner at Ashburton in March, Longford subsequently won at Riccarton and then finished third behind Euphoria and the stakes winner Residential. - NZME

Hurdles confirmed

Lennytheshark returned from a break with an epic second after doing all the work behind muchimproved stablemate Im The Boss in the Shepparton Cup on April 28. David Aiken drove him at Shepparton and is expected to take the reins again from gate seven against a moderate bunch at Cranbourne. If Hampstead can maintain their winning form for the next week they could claim Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey’s first silverware of the season. Hampstead are one of two unbeaten teams in the competition so far, with two wins and a draw under their belts, and a further win over Craighead in Ashburton tomorrow would set up a tantalising mid-week clash next week. Cambridge is the only other unbeaten team in the competition so far. Hampstead were due to play them a few weeks ago, but the game got rained out. It was rescheduled for next Wednesday night. “If we can beat Craighead it will be all on that game with Cambridge,” Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull said. By all, he means the season’s first trophy – the Mary Smith Trophy – and Hampstead would dearly like to start the season with a win. Last year they were hoping to finish the season on a high, but fell agonisingly short, going down to Timaru Girls’ High School in a penalty shoot-out in the final. Cambridge will put up a fight next week though. They were a strong team, as Mid Canterbury’s other senior women’s team – Hampstead/Collegians – will find out when they play them in Ashburton tomorrow. Hampstead/Collegians head into that match off the back of a 8-2 loss to Hampstead, where they let in four late goals, and coach Karen McIntyre said her team would need to play hard to the final whistle to be in with a shot. “They are a very capable young team, so they just need to put it together on the field for the whole game,” McIntyre said. That game follows Hampstead’s, meaning they’ll be able to stick around to watch and see just what will be waiting for them

Bennett well-placed George Bennett had two reasons to celebrate when he crossed the line on stage five of the Giro d’Italia. Canterbury coach Dean Pay admits he needs to be more selective with what he says following NRL matches after being whacked with a $25,000 fine for attacking NRL referees. They may have started rugby’s 2018 UC Championship with a 65-28 loss, but the coach of this year’s Mid Canterbury Combined side wasn’t disappointed. In fact, he was pretty happy with how his young new side fared in an away game to a side that is likely to be one of this season’s top contenders in the Crusaders zone secondary school’s rugby competition, Marlborough Boys’ College. The story that the final scoreline didn’t tell, was that Mid Canterbury actually led 28-17 at half time, coach Blair O’Donnell said. “Just something happened in that second half that we can’t explain,” O’Donnell said. Part of it was a lack of depth off the bench. The Mid Canterbury Combined side lost a lot of players this season, some to clubs and a couple who got scholarships to Christchurch schools. That meant the side was largely made up of year 11 and 12 students, and some had only been playing for a couple of years. But, the players they did have were committed, and a pleasure to coach, O’Donnell said. “I’ve never met such a great bunch of guys to coach. “These guys are just amazing guys and they are really just going to get better as they go down the track,” O’Donnell said. “I believe in them and I think they will start ticking off a few teams in the same boat as us.” Mid Canterbury scored four good team tries in the first half against Marlborough which gained them a valuable bonus point which set them on the right track to their goal of a top eight finish in this year’s competition.

Moody back in pack All Blacks strongman Joe Moody will make his first appearance of the Super Rugby season after being named to start for the Crusaders against the Waratahs. The seasoned loosehead prop is one of six starting changes made by the defending champions from the side that overwhelmed the Melbourne Rebels 55-10, three of them are in the front row. Shields gets release New Zealand Rugby has decided it will, by special exception, release Hurricanes loose forward Brad Shields from the obligations of his contract, to be available for selection for England next month. Sporting excellence in the spotlight Sporting excellence will be recognised tonight at the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards at the Hotel Ashburton. The annual event, which brings together many of Mid Canterbury’s shining stars on the sporting stage for a night of celebration, will see a raft of people awarded for their efforts in sporting endeavours over the past 12 months. Nominations for this year’s awards are down on what they were 12 months ago, but strong numbers in the Junior Sportsperson category are a positive sign toward the future. For the first year a Masters division has been introduced to recognise the efforts of those competing in Masters events around the country, as they grow in stature and prestige.

Carlos Spencer always planned to return to the Blues, not the Hurricanes. Growing up it was different. Emerging through Horowhenua College in Levin, idolising Wellington and All Blacks wing Bernie Fraser, Spencer thought he would end up playing club rugby in the capital. Celtics into finals With 2.4 seconds left and the Boston Celtics leading by two, Marcus Smart had a chance to clinch Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals yesterday and eliminate Philadelphia by making a pair of free throws. He missed the first. He could have made things more difficult for the 76ers by missing the second one on purpose, and forcing them to go the length of the court with the clock running. He chucked it against the rim; it went in. That gave the 76ers a chance to win with a desperation 3-pointer. The full-court inbounds pass went into the left corner, and who was there to intercept it, heaving it back into the air to run out the clock? To the surprise of no one in a Celtics uniform, it was Smart. “That’s a Marcus Smart sequence. “That just describes him so well,” guard Jaylen Brown said after Boston beat Philadelphia 114-112 yesterday to advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the second straight year. “If it came down to one guy coming up with it, everybody’s got their money on Smart.” Jayson Tatum scored 25 points, Brown had 24 and Terry Rozier scored 17, sinking a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game with 9.8 seconds left after forcing Joel Embiid’s turnover. Tim Cook knows all eyes will be on him when he slides in behind the wheel of his trusty Mitsubishi Evo 3 this weekend. A year ago he won the Ashburton Car Club’s annual Street Sprints in a record time and the question on everyone’s lips when the motorsport event hits the roads of Ashburton’s Riverside industrial area this weekend will be, can he do it again? Cook himself doesn’t know the answer. He knows it’s possible for the record to be broken, but whether he can push his Mitsubishi Evo 3 that little bit further, he’s unsure. But he does know one thing – as the defending champion and record-holder, he’s the one to beat. “I know there’s a few people that have got me lined up in the barrel and want to get me,” he said. Cook set the new record time of 2.22.9

Cook and his Mitsi have been a team for around 11 years now, taking out the Street Sprints in 2017 and 2015, and finishing second and third on multiple occasions. They don’t get out together as much as they used to, with their last race together having been the Waimate 50 back in October. “My car, as far as pace and power, hasn’t been developed in the last five years, so it’s pretty tired, where everyone else has got a bit of boogie,” he said. “Quicker times are achievable down there. “Everyone said the track conditions

There’s rain in the forecast and a slippery track will not only slow drivers down, it could also impact on the number of spectators lining the track and that would be disappointing for the Ashburton Car Club, Cook said. The Street Sprints are the club’s biggest event of the year. Entries fill up fast and there is a waiting list of people ready to take the spots of any drivers who pull out. For Cook, who grew up in Ashburton but now lives in Christchurch, it’s an event not to be missed. He grew up watching his dad Gary race and made his own Street Sprints debut at age 15 or 16, and hasn’t missed a year since. It’s a long-standing tradition for the Cook family; Gary will also be back on the track

again this year, in his Toyota Starlet. “I make him come out of retirement for it,” Cook said. Also in this year’s field is last year’s runner-up Lyndon Ball, who will be keen to go one better, while past winner Glenn Frew, from Mosgiel, will also be eager to perform well after gearbox problems ended his 2017 campaign early. Cook said another potential contender is Josh Mitchell. Whether any of the event’s 65 entrants have what it takes to better Cook’s 2.22.9 minute record will be known by late Sunday afternoon. “If someone can get it, I’ll be the first one to congratulate them, because it will be one hell of a run,” Cook said. The Street Sprints kick off early Saturday morning and continue on Sunday with eliminations, culminating in a top two shoot-out late in the afternoon.
