FEED RUN Lending a helping hand By Heather Chalmers

heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

An appeal initiated by Hinds dairy farmers Ben and MaryAnne Stock to donate spare bales of feed to Hawkes Bay drought-affected farmers has quickly snowballed, with hundreds of bales being freighted north from next week. Mid Canterbury farmers, transport firms and rural contractors have been quick to show their generosity, providing bales and baleage, as well as logistics

to consolidate the feed for transporting north. While one truck and trailer load of feed went north earlier this week, KiwiRail has now agreed to shift feed north for free. “So that’s a huge breakthrough,” Ben Stock said. “We are fully aware that Mid Canterbury itself doesn’t have a lot of feed floating around, so we are grateful to anyone who can donate something. “Our preference is for baleage

to feed sheep, but quite a bit of straw is also being donated and we are not going to turn that away.” From Monday, KiwiRail will begin transporting up to 10 40foot containers full of hay bales per week from Ashburton as capacity allows. From Wednesday, a wagon load of wrapped silage will be transported from Timaru daily. The Stocks initiated the Mid Canterbury Feed Run, following a similar venture by Wairara-

pa farmers Sophie and Daniel Hansen. “We decided we could donate feed. We rang around some neighbours and did a Facebook post and the next thing we were up to 400 bales. “It would be great to get close to 1000 bales if we can. Whatever people can spare we will be enormously grateful for. “All going well that feed should be donated, transported and railed at no cost to Hawkes Bay farmers,” Stock said.

To donate, people can sign up on the Mid Canterbury Feed Run Facebook page. As a similar initiative was also under way in South Canterbury, led by Levels farmer Nicky Hyslop, the two groups had teamed up and were sharing resources and information, Stock said.

■■COVID-19 CLOSURE

Backing a trans-Tasman bubble No bubble ‘until zero cases’

By Susan Sandys

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Many Mid Cantabrians support introducing a trans-Tasman bubble, but don’t want it right now. Even those most affected by no travel between Australia and New Zealand are expecting the government to move with caution on the issue. Angela Hunter, who now lives in Melbourne, said she and husband Dave and sons Thomas, 6, and Samuel, 3, were very much missing her parents who lived in her hometown of Ashburton. She said her mum and dad travelled over there twice per year, and she usually travelled over here twice per year, meaning the family was reunited every three months. However, now following Covid-19, she had not seen her parents since Christmas. “I do believe there should be a bubble, but I don’t believe it should be happening right now,” Hunter said. “For me to come home I would happily isolate before travelling, do tests before getting on the plane and after arriving, if that’s what it took,” she said. “I want my parents to remain safe, I don’t want them to be put at risk.” Borders could not stay closed forever, however, and the reality of having the virus present in the world at some level could be something which just had to be factored into day-to-day lives. She said ideally she would like to see a bubble up and running by the end of the year, and she hoped to be able to see her parents again this Christmas.

Six-year-old Thomas and three-year-old Samuel are missing their Ashburton grandparents, says mum Angela Hunter, with husband Dave. PHOTO SUPPLIED Currently in Victoria, life felt pretty normal following a less severe lockdown than New Zealand had gone through. Householders were allowed up to 20 guests, and pubs and restaurants were open with limits. opening up at all this winter. And another company he dealt with, which was a big summer operator, was not banking on bringing Kiwis here until after Christmas. “Ideally I would love it before the September school holidays, but I can’t see it,” he said. He believed Methven would have a good winter despite a

lack of Australian tourists, which make up 15 per cent of his clientele at Methven Travel. Extra domestic tourists would hopefully make up for the drop in international tourists. City residents who traditionally went off for summer holidays overseas would hopefully try something new this year and come skiing instead.

As the Opposition calls for Government to have a clear plan for opening a trans-Tasman bubble, almost all Mid Cantabrians who commented on a Guardian Facebook post think the plan should be to keep borders closed until Australia has zero cases. New cases notified each day in Australia have dropped off dramatically from their peak in April, but there are still about 430 active cases. “Let’s not open until they are clear like us … I am hanging out to see my sister over there which would have been happening this month but don’t want to at the potential cost of our country going backwards again,” said one commenter. “Nope we all good thanks. Until they stop having Covid cases they can stay away,” said another. “Wish National would stop going on about bubble,” said another. The post asked for feedback on National’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson Gerry Brownlee calling for government to have a clear plan for opening the trans-Tasman bubble. “Knowing the Government’s position will help local operators plan as wage subsidy conditions change,” Brownlee said.

Lending a helping hand From P1 From Monday, donated feed will be delivered to Quigley Feeds in the Ashburton Business Estate, where it will be unloaded, packed into containers, then taken to the nearby railhead to be dispatched. “We have rung around transport firms and asked if they can donate a few trucks to transport bales into Quigley’s yard.” Stock said he had been told Hawkes Bay had a 40,000 bale feed deficit after months of little rain. As well as a lack of feed, Hawkes Bay farmers were also facing delays getting stock killed at meatworks, with some having to kill capital (breeding) stock. Grant Perkins, of Hinds Cartage, who was assisting with logistics and collecting bales, said a full truck and trailer load to Hawkes Bay cost $3500, with crossing Cook Strait a significant expense. Quigley Contracting managing director Andrew Quigley said “a lot of good people are working together to do good things. We are just part of that”. KiwiRail group chief executive Greg Miller said it moved dairy

Andrew Quigley products, beef, lamb, horticulture and viticulture for the rural sector “so it is one of our most important customers, and we’re pleased to support it now at this time of need”. “We’ll carry the feed and we’ll carry the cost because everyone who’s seen the parched farmland can understand how hard this is on rural communities. “While our freight volumes are still recovering in the post-Covid period, we have some limited

northbound capacity that we’ll be using when available, along with providing containers, to get this vital feed supply from Timaru and Ashburton up to Napier where it is needed,” Miller said. Hyslop said her group had started making enquiries about sending feed to Hawkes Bay. “It was looking really difficult until I got a call saying KiwiRail was offering to help. That was the game-changer.”

Ashburton could be big event winner By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s A&P Show could this year earn itself a reputation as the largest of its kind in the South Island. With Christchurch’s signature event cancelled because of concerns over the impact of Covid-19, Ashburton’s show has the potential to break all records, and that would pump valuable dollars into the district’s economy, says mayor Neil Brown. “It’ll be the biggest show in the South Island and we need to capitalise on this,” he said. That was music to newly elected show president Peter Stewart’s ears. He admits to being cautiously optimistic about a show that’s a record breaker this year, and said he’s taking confidence from the solid inquiry that is already coming in from the equestrian sector. Entries don’t officially open until mid-August, but the phones are already starting to ring, he said. When other shows were cancelling their annual events, Ashburton had stuck to its guns and adopted a wait and see approach. And that had now paid off, Stewart said. “We’ve had a very positive response. Let’s wait and see how

it pans out but we’re all very focused,” he said. Ashburton’s other major spring event, Boulevard Day also survived the Covid-19 pandemic. And with the likelihood of this year’s event being a record breaker, Ashburton district councillors decided at their briefing meeting on Thursday that they needed to look at additional parking options. They’re keen to see the grassed strip opposite the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre used, but if that were to happen, it would require New Zealand Transport Agency approval. Obtaining that approval might not be easy, chief executive Hamish Riach said, but the council would start pushing for that area to be available. Knowing he’s likely to be planning for a massive event this year, organiser Bob McDonald said the option of parking on the grassed area off West Street would solve the traffic problems that traditionally plagued Boulevard Day. With several inner town streets off limits for parking because of the work that was part of the town’s revitalisation project, McDonald said the extra parking would be desperately needed. “We’re pinning our hopes on this being a huge event this year

and we’ve started contacting all of our stallholders and we’re hoping they’ll all still be in business. We’re pretty excited,” he said. More than ever, this year’s

Boulevard Day would be a great opportunity for local retailers to generate some much needed income. “We all need to get some trac-

tion because it’s pretty quiet out there and it’s great the council’s looking at this parking issue because that’s been a problem for years.” he said.

Man convicted following bag of snags dispute A dispute that started over a bag of sausages has ended with a man facing 100 hours of community work. Berent Pieter Wegman defended two charges, one of assault and one of intentional damage in a judge alone trial before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the Ashburton District Court on Thursday. The charges came about following an incident at a Rakaia address on July 15 last year. The police case alleged that there had been a dispute between Wegman’s father and the victim Melcolm Wichman. The court heard from Wich-

access inside once again and to assault Wichman again. Wichman suffered bruising and swelling around his left eye, and the shirt he was wearing was torn during the attack. Police also called Constable Nicholas Marshall to the stand who attended the incident, and he confirmed he saw broken glass on the ground below the door, and that Wichman’s clothing had been torn. The defence argued that what had actually occurred was Wegman and his partner had arrived at the property, and that Wegman had knocked on the door and asked to speak with Wichman to

man and his partner who both gave evidence that Wegman had forced his way into a caravan he and his partner were living in on the property where Wegman’s father was living in a shed. They both told the court that Wegman forced his way into the caravan after tussling over the door with Wichman. He then pushed Wichman’s partner aside as he entered the caravan before punching Wegman three or four times as he lay on the bed before he left the caravan. The court heard he then punched out the glass window of the door of the caravan to gain

resolve the dispute with his father. They told the court he then shut the door at which point Wegman knocked again. Wichman was said to have opened the door and punched Wegman in the head, causing him to fall to the ground outside the caravan. As Wichman was said to have advanced on Wegman, he struck Wichman in what he claimed was self-defence. In rendering his decision, Judge O’Driscoll said it was clear that two people were telling him the truth, and that two people were lying to him. He said the evidence present-

ed by Constable Marshall agreed with the evidence presented by Wichman and his partner, and that he therefore accepted their evidence compared to that of Wegman and his partner, therefore proving the two charges beyond reasonable doubt. He convicted Wegman on both charges, ordered him to complete 100 hours of community work, pay a $500 emotional harm reparation payment on the charge of assault. On the charge of intentional damage he was ordered to pay reparation of $70 for the broken window, and $50 in witness compensation.

Longbeach 2019 raises $22k By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The presentation may have been more low-key compared to previous years, however there was reason to celebrate for the Hinds District Lions and Longbeach School. Proceeds of more than $20,000 from last year’s Longbeach Coastal Challenge were settled this week as organisers now plan for the 2020 edition due to be held later in the year. It was only decided over the past week that this year’s event would be going ahead. The annual multisport event has been run for more than a decade after it originally began as a mountain biking only challenge. It serves as a fundraiser for both the Longbeach School and Hinds and Districts Lions Charitable Trust. A total of $22,000 was raised and split evenly between the school and Lions club. Although the community-driven event again replicated its efforts from previous years, Covid-19 meant there would be ongoing challenges for charities, event promoter Rachael Rickard said. “You could predict that funding for charities is going to get a

Umuhuri’s body was dumped from a car near Auckland City Hospital on June 1 after police responded to reports of screaming and gunshots in the nearby suburb of St Johns. Early yesterday, police searched a Lush Ave residence, Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid said. “This was a property of interest in our investigation and the enquiry team have conducted a thorough search of the property. stant at one and two officers respectively. Aoraki District Commander Inspector David Gaskin said there has been a conscious effort to increase numbers in the past years, but if there are to be any further increases they will be smaller than in the past. “Of recent times we have increased the coverage to 24/7 frontline response staff which does use an increased number of staff.” Gaskin admitted numbers can fluctuate and change often, with many staff commuting to Ashburton for work instead of basing themselves in the district. “Ashburton, unfortunately, sits

too close to Christchurch and as a result a number of staff reside in Christchurch and travel back and forth each day,” he said. “I cannot see this changing although I will continually push for recruits to be selected from the community they intend to work.” The Guardian understands that currently around 14 staff based at the Ashburton station have begun their careers in the district. Gaskin said there are benefits in newly graduated officers starting their careers in both small rural locations and also large metropolitan areas. “Often rural staff are better

Scientists are pushing for an official inquiry into New Zealand’s response to Covid-19, arguing it would better prepare the country for the next big crisis. While the Government launched an inquiry into urgent legislation it used to implement its alert level system and lockdown, it hasn’t announced an independent probe into its wider response – something Act leader David Seymour has repeatedly called for. Now, a group of Otago University experts have also asked for one, pointing out that while New Zealand had done an “extraordinarily successful job” of stopping the virus, a wide-ranging inquiry was still critical. - NZME

grounded as they have to cover a greater variety of work but on the negative side often they receive less support and supervision because there is less available,” he said. “There are also less career development opportunities in the small centres. It is only in recent times that Ashburton has started accepting recruits. “This was done because no one would apply for nationally advertised vacancies. “Recruiting will continue directly into Ashburton and older staff will leave either for further opportunities or new careers – its just the nature of the beast really.”

Kiwi police were shot at by offenders nearly once a month on average over the past year, figures show. One officer who has been involved in police shootings says the numbers climbed since he first started policing 30 years ago. He said in the moment when an offender was shooting at police, everything starts to move in “slow motion”. “It becomes life or death, really ... we don’t want to not go home, so yeah, [we] shoot back.” He said it was the same for other colleagues he’d spoken to. “All the police sirens, you don’t hear them at all. Even the gunshots, really.” It did not matter who was holding the gun, just that there was a gun being fired, he said. - NZME

It seems like a lifetime ago that the Ashburton Art Gallery last held a large function. Covid-19 saw the crowds disappear and the gallery doors close. The gallery opened again last month, but has only been able to get back to hosting events now that New Zealand has reached Alert Level 1. The first planned is on July 26, and it is set to be a major calendar happening, with three artists’ exhibitions being celebrated. Disrupted Space by Whanganui printmaker Anthony Davies and Once a Wilderness by Wellington painter Ben Lysaght opened at the gallery yesterday, while Ech-

oes of Memories by Christchurch painter Michael Holland will open soon. The last time an event was held at the gallery was more than four months ago on March 5, which was the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards (ZAFAA) opening night. Generally there is an exhibition opening every month or so. Curator Shirin Khosraviani said gallery staff could not wait. “We hope that everyone will come flooding back, for our team we are eager to get back into normal activity,” Khosraviani said. And she expected art lovers in Mid Canterbury would be just as excited, anticipating hearing from artists about their work and sharing their interests, particularly fol-

lowing the airwaves being saturated with Covid-19 news and updates. The artists include local Ben Lysaght, who attended Ashburton College before heading off to art school in Wellington. Khosraviani remembered when she started at the gallery about nine years ago he was among the young teenage Jub Jub Club pupils. “Now this is his first solo show,” she said. As well as events held at the gallery building, which has a maximum capacity of 250, groups such as Jub Jub, Art Addicts and In Colour will be able to return. And school groups and tour groups will come back. “It’s been quite a hiatus,” Khosraviani said.

Ford cruise back on the road again By Heather Mackenzie

heather.m@theguardian.co.nz

Ford enthusiast Jayden Williams and a bunch of equally enthusiastic Ford drivers are set to hit the road again this month. Back in April Williams was looking at running his second Mid Canterbury Ford cruise day, but Covid-19 struck. To begin with it looked like him and the other 24 registered cars would be able to make the trip, providing social distancing rules were followed, but when the situation changed again Williams put it on hold. Thankfully Level 1 has meant he can dust off his registration forms and set a new date, June 24. Other than the date, Williams said everything else remains the same. “We will still be meeting at the Ashburton Domain at 11am for an 11.30 departure.” The planned route will see the Fords leave the domain and head to Methven for a picnic lunch, after visiting the Hakatere Huts and Barrhill along the way. All vehicles of Ford extraction are included, Williams said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of car make it is, just as long as it has a Ford motor un-

der the hood and is totally roadworthy.” Williams is already planning his next Ford cruise for later on in the year. This one, he said, will be open to all-comers. “Newer Ford cars, utes, standard daily

drive SUVs, and classic cars will all be welcome.” Williams has set up a Facebook called Ford Cruise, so head there for more information.

The hunt is on for staff for this year’s general election and referendums, with more staff expected to be brought on than in the past. It is expected that more than 25,000 roles will be filled come the election on September 19. An Electoral Commission spokesperson said they will have a better understanding of how many staff are required for the Ashburton District when advance and election day voting places are decided in the region. “We are taking on more people for this election mainly to help provide voting services for the referendums that will be held with the election and to support enrolment throughout the voting period and on election day,” they said. The roles are short term for voting places during advance voting and on election day, and can last from one day to a couple of weeks, and all roles are paid at least the living wage. “Anybody 16 years or over can apply to work on the election. Working on election day which is a Saturday works for people already in full-time employment,” the spokesperson said. “Other roles tend to suit people who have more time available. “We’re looking for people who live and work locally, and it’s a great way to get involved in your community.”

Lions clubs swing back into service By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Their service work might have been put on ice for a couple of months, but the district’s seven Lions clubs are ready and raring to get back to what they do best under Alert Level 1. With clubs unable to meet and no events on, clubs had to adapt to email updates and Zoom calls for their meetings, but are now able to meet in full once again. “The seven clubs have started getting back to normal and meeting once again and the service aspect will be returning soon,” zone chairman Garth Bateup said. “Obviously there are some projects that weren’t able to go ahead that we would’ve been doing over lockdown but there are plenty of projects to come for the rest of the year.” Bateup said for clubs like the Ashburton club they would be waiting to see what would happen with the Ashburton A&P Show that they were involved with, and that all three clubs based in Ashburton were involved with Boulevard Day and would be keen to see that happen. This time of year is also an important time of year for the clubs as they move through their changeover, where the new president and officers take over for their stint running the club. “Some clubs have had to push their changeover back but they will all be happening towards the end of this month or at the start of next month,” he said. All clubs have been keeping their members informed with what has been going on.”

Fry-day Fry-up wraps up Well, what was meant to be a nine-week series, that dragged out over a couple of months thanks to a little thing called Covid-19, has come to an end, for now. I’ve wheeled my way across Ashburton tasting all the fried delights on offer, Allenton to Netherby, to Tinwald to Beach Road. But now we finish up with the closest shop to Guardian HQ, and admittedly, my personal favourite ahead of this series. I entered this series with a clear head, ready to assess each shop on its merits, and I am sure that is what I’ve done. The big impression from the Triangle right from the word go is the price. A scoop of chips, a piece of fish and a hotdog are all a simple $2, making adding how much your meal is going to cost much easier, which is handy as the shop operates on a cash only basis. And while you’d think that, for $2, the servings could be a bit light, the scoops of chips are generous and the fish and hot dogs are some of the biggest presented so far. The chips are a high point of the meal, varying wildly in size from chip to chip, with some large heavyweights providing the perfect soggy starch to sweep up your sauce of choice, while there are other smaller morsels that crisp up perfectly in the hot oil giving a great crunch. The fish was a long fillet that was quite heavily battered, compared to some of the other shops, but was fresh on the inside with a good crisp on the outside. The hotdog was more evenly battered than the fish, and

Ashburton is blessed with a wide range of fish and chip shops to satisfy one of New Zealand’s favourite fast food cravings. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay took on the unenviable, or enviable, task of reviewing them all . . .

had a great flavour. Heading into this series the Triangle was my favourite shop to go to, and probably still is at this point, but this series has also taught me that you are going to get a great feed no matter where you go in Ashburton, as long as it’s your favourite, that is what counts.

■■ TALES FROM THE BACK SEAT

And through this series I’ve learnt Ashburton’s residents are very tribal about their fish and chips and have taken great interest in this series. I’ve had everyone from school principals to house movers to horse trainers and real estate agents quizzing my decisions and offering their recommen-

Dear Bernard. You may have heard of me. I’ve devoted my life to warning people about the evils of the demon drink and encouraging temperance. My campaign has involved travelling throughout the country and staging wonderful revival gatherings at which I warn people against partaking. Originally I used the slogan “down with the drink” but then realised that created a little confusion. Of course, visual evidence always amplifies a good speech especially one promoting an important campaign.

I was fortunate to find that in the form of a young man named Herman. Although from a great family and having been given a wonderful upbringing in his late teens poor Herman fell victim to the devil’s concoction and let it pass his lips. On my tours Herman has been sitting on the stage, a sad bloodshot bleary-eyed specimen, drooling from the mouth, muttering away to himself and occasionally making strange, mostly indecipherable, utterings. The more indecipherable the better, the ones which can be understood are not repeatable. To give you an idea Herman

dations and opinions, and because of that I’ve been amazed at the response and community engagement this series has received. So, while it is farewell for now, we know full well more fish and chip shops sit proudly around the district, and we could well be back . . .

Mid Canty as seen from the air A new range of aerial photographs of the Ashburton District are now available on Environment Canterbury’s website. The photographs are part of a collection of images taken across Canterbury over the past 100 years, with the new collection for the Ashburton District including aerial shots of Ashburton, Chertsey, Hakatere, Hinds, Lake Clearwater, Lauriston, Mayfield, Methven, Mt Somers, Rakaia and the Rangitata Huts. A range of photos across Banks Peninsula, Mackenzie and Timaru districts were also taken during the summer-long project. Each summer councils across Canterbury are part of a public-private partnership that works to provide photos of different parts of the Canterbury region. The digital photos are captured using a specialist, high powered camera on board an aircraft flying at an altitude of 1400 metres. The images are hosted on the Canterbury Maps website and the collection also contains historical digitally-converted film photographs dating back to the 1920s. Photos can be viewed in 2D and 3D on the Canterbury Maps website by keying in a street address or location.

Guardian motoring correspondent, Bernard Egan is well known around these parts. Over the next few weeks, he’s agreed to share with us some of his tales from yesteryear. Some will be his own telling while others will come directly, or indirectly from others. The whole truth of some, can be left for public opinion. Readers are invited to share tales with Bernard by emailing geegeeber@gmail.com

has been a bit like a younger version of the old priest Jack who featured on Father Ted. Anyway, we’re coming out of lockdown and just as I’m planning to get my show back on the road woe and betide poor Herman up and dies on me. To be honest, it’s amazing he lasted as long as he did. The pathologist suggested the fluids he enjoyed had had a preservative effect, a bit like anti-freeze The latter was in fact detected. Upon advice from the pathologist poor Herman has been interred – the cocktails he carried could well have caused an explosion had he been cremated. Or if not extinguished the flame. I’m comforted to know poor Herman has now gone to the wonderful rehabilitation treatment clinic in the sky but his departure leaves me in a quandary. My talk is based around being

able to point at a blithering idiot like poor Herman as an example of what drink can do so I have a vacancy to fill and need someone to take poor Herman’s place. A mutual friend has mentioned your name suggesting you as an ideal candidate who would fit the position and not require much, if any, training. Would you like to join me for this wonderful opportunity to take the place of poor Herman? Sincerely, Reverend Drinkwater. Well, Reverend Drinkwater and I have an interesting mutual friend, don’t we? I’ve decided to decline the Reverend’s thoughtful offer saying I guess it was kind of him to think of me and acknowl-

edging I’m am giving up the only offer I’m likely to get for a stage career. But I didn’t tell him, as he may find it upsetting, the main reason for declining. If Matt the editor will still have me after this reference, the 50th tales from the back seat will soon be published and a couple, who live in a wonderful part of our district heading into the high country, feel that should be celebrated, with possibly a little tipple. Didn’t like to tell Rev Drinkwater that!

OUR VIEW

Matt Markham

EDITOR

A chance to put ourselves on the map A

shburton District we have a platform, and it’s our opportunity to use it. The return of Alert Level 1 came too late for many major events across the South Island, and even across the rest of the country, but now that things are getting back to normal the opportunities are endless to market our corner of the country to those on the outside. Using big ticket events, and I say big ticket events in the sense of our major local events and not so much national big ticket events, to attract people in our doors should be key for us over the coming months. Some will happen naturally, but others might take a little more persuading and it’s up to those in charge of those events and us as custodians of this district to do our bit to make it happen. An event like the Ashburton A&P Show could be bigger than it has ever been – thanks largely to the fact that the equivalent, if you can even call it that, up the road in Christchurch isn’t going ahead. More people will be keen to get their show fix by the time ours rolls around in October and the numbers through the gates should be quite large, which should equate to a really successful event for our own show organisers. And that’s fantastic news. Same for something like Boulevard Day too. While perhaps not at the same scale as an A&P show, there’s huge potential to tap into a whole new market from out of town – perhaps in a different direction than where we already target with that particular event. It doesn’t require much – just a more concerted effort to be seen and heard during the lead up to such things by being better about talking about what’s happening on our own backdoor and selling it to those who don’t often make it to that point. Do it right and create some positive memories and those same people will keep coming back.

YOUR VIEW

Three signs showing you need to change your diet Y

ou have finally started the diet and see some results, but you are experiencing a few “side-effects” on the go. What are the three most common things, that you should pay attention to when going on a diet? 1. Your sleep is disturbed. ■■ About 80 per cent of new diets have an emphasis on cutting sugar and carbohydrates out of your diet. It might sound like a good idea, especially if you are reaching out for sweets every time you are tired or bored. But limiting carbohydrates from the diet can cause disruptions in your sleep. Complex carbohydrates help women to create a stable blood sugar level, so needed for regulation of our hormones, even throughout the night. Therefore adding a portion of complex carbohydrates at the night meal might be a great way to give yourself a good night of sleep

and more energy into the next day. 2. You are hungry ■■ Must hunger be part of our daily routine, especially when losing weight? No. When you feel constant hunger and you never allow your body to fuel until is satisfied, it will switch into survival mode and decrease the fat burning phase. That’s why you got on this diet in the first place, isn’t it? When your body is hungry it searches for the easiest energy source, sugar, stored in your big muscles. To get to it, we need to break down the muscle

tissue you worked so hard for in a gym. That causes the well-known yo-yo effect in a first-place. The only way how to lose weight without yoyo-ing is to eat when you are hungry. 3. You are saying NO too often. ■■ Are you a foodie? I am, that’s why I can never stick to a restricted diet. We all have our favourite foods we have to give up in order to lose weight, but with restriction always comes a binge. That’s the time when you lose it. If you say NO to foods that you like too much, foods such as carbs, dairy, meat, homebaked low sugar cake, quality chocolate, fruit etc, they will always be in the back of your mind and once you will give in, you won’t have the willpower to stop. Leading into uncontrollable eating. Now, how can you lose that weight? Focus on nourishing your

body, rather than restricting it. Choose whole foods instead of processed and eat when you are hungry to prevent binge or overeat. Job lucky! O

ne of my Talky Bits on my Facebook page this week got me to thinking and when I stopped and did just that, I came up with the conclusion that I’ve been very lucky. The Talky Bit question was, ‘Which one of your jobs was your least favourite’? I mulled over the question myself. My first job as a paper boy was okay until I got the sack because I forgot about my run as I was having a blast in a friend’s swimming pool on a hot summer’s day. My next after school job in the parents’ Hospital Shop was also okay, the pay was average but the bonus scheme of pies and cigarettes made it bearable. My next job was the best job a teenager with a love of music could ever hope for. I loved working at Record World in the Arcade. It was back in the days when it was cool to head up town on a Friday night. That place would be packed and we could sell several LPs, cassettes and CDs of a hot new album by the time the first track had finished playing instore. Especially if we wound it up a bit. It was a fine line though, we had to be careful not to go over the ‘neighbouring shops can’t hear themselves

think’ level. The trainee supermarket manager, barman in Scotland, freezing worker and farm labourer jobs were all fine and fitted a purpose (earned me some folding stuff ) at the time. I drove catering trucks at Christchurch airport for the catering kitchen who provided meals on Ansett NZ. That was an awesome job. It was well paid, which allowed me to buy my first home when I was 21. If we worked quickly or there were flight delays it allowed us plenty of time to hone our dart playing skills too. I had two other jobs while I lived in Scotland for a couple of years. One was great and the other would be my selection for the worst job I’ve had. I sold filter coffee over the northern half of Scotland for over a year and loved it. No, it wasn’t because of my love of coffee, that was only really developed when I started hosting breakfast radio shows.

I got to drive all over that beautiful country and get paid for doing it. From Loch Ness to Glenfiddich, I saw it all. It was brilliant; if I came across a castle or a stone circle I’d stop and take my lunch break there. On the other hand, being a builder’s labourer, for a builder who mainly worked with Aberdeen stone during winter was a nightmare. Not only was I freezing most of the time, it took me about a month before I could understand what the two guys I worked with were saying. Even though I’d rank it as the worst job I’ve done, I’m glad I did it and it was also fit for purpose at the time and paid for a couple of weeks’ travel in Europe. My two current jobs are far from the worst and emphasise just how lucky I have been. Yakking on the radio and writing for the local paper are both challenging and rewarding. And on

big banger

S

ince its inception there’s been a dominant view that the only way to enjoy a Mustang is to get one with a V8 under the hood. But, a quiet counter-culture of enthusiasts opening their eyes to less cylinders is growing. Neither of these ’Stangs is quite your standard, straight-off-the-shelf fare. Ford’s quintessential muscle car got a significant mid-life refresh two years ago, which makes right now the perfect time to breathe life into the line and release some new go-faster models. In the four corner we have the EcoBoost High Performance [pictured in orange]; supplementing an already quietly capable

turbocharged 2.3-litre powertrain with an extra 12kW boost, and adding some new 19-inch shoes wrapped in bespoke Pirelli P-Zero Corsa4s, a retro-tastic egg-crate grille, a 3.55:1 limited-slip diff, among other tweaks. The GT’s eight, meanwhile, is mostly untouched in Ford’s new RTR Series 1 package. Instead it focuses much more on the visual; adding in RTR’s signature demon-eyed LED grille and a gawking body-kit primed to instill fear into the eyes of kerbs, speed bumps, and ankles. And of course, there are numerous RTR and Ford Performance power upgrades one can sprinkle onto a GT should they want to join the 400kW club. In its own way, each upgrade represents

solid value. At $65,990 the High Performance is just a $3000 premium over standard, while the $89,990 RTR is $7000 more than an ordinary GT. Impressively similar straight-line performance, similarly finished cabins, and an equal amount of turned heads. It’s enough to think that, maybe, there’s no real comparison to make. They’re the same car, only one’s gifted with the silky deep voice. But, take them onto a challenging piece of road, and they’re totally different. The RTR serves up a familiar mix of surprisingly smooth ride, visceral 5.0-litre roar, and charming simplistic rear-driven underpinnings, conjuring nostalgia for many still hurting over the death of the Aussie muscle

cars that we worshipped for generations. The significant weight of the GT (and its engine) will make those pining for oldschool thrills grin from ear to ear. But with the EcoBoost there’s a much better grasp on the more modest power figure. In fact, the four-cylinder has a much better grasp on everything. All that engine-related weight loss (almost 100kg) is taken away from the front end, transforming it into one of the sports car world’s best-kept secrets. The amount of mechanical grip and front-end composure is impressive in isolation, and just straight eye-opening when compared to the GT. In short, the EcoBoost is a better sports car. And the GT is a better Mustang.

One tough little Triumph Bernard Egan MOTORING

I

t’s great when one story leads to other tales. Our story two weeks ago about a Cadillac and an overbridge ended with those words. True words. Well, there’s another connection with the story, but before we get to that there is something else to mention. Photos taken by Roger Hart. Like his words, they’re always good. He picks some great locations for pictures of the vehicles he test drives. Last week’s photo of the Subaru Outback is absolute proof of that. Amongst rugged terrain with a backdrop of our majestic Southern Alps, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting location in which to showcase that vehicle. It looks right at home and no doubt when its makers see that photo they’re be delighted. And it’s a reminder of the amazing scenery right here in Mid Canterbury. There you go; the proof’s in the pudding so to speak – a photo from Roger’s last col-

umn has led to a comment in this one. Getting back to another connection with the Cadillac and the overbridge – well to be more precise the Cadillac – Alice McLaren has told us about a car that has a connection. Now to be fair, the car Alice has mentioned and the Cadillac could hardly be more different. Alice has told us about the delightful little Triumph Sports Coupe which her late husband Ian owned when they began courting, and which they kept for a while after they were married. It was small and it was British. The Cadillac was big and it was American. So how could they be connected? Well to start with, the owners of both cars liked them, and the owners had a connection with the Highbank area. The MacLauchlans who owned the Cadillac lived near Highbank; Alice’s family also lived in that part of the County. Both cars were used for memorable trips – the Cadillac was used to transport a pony up country, and on one occasion Ian took three passengers up to Mount Hutt Station in the tiny Triumph. So, on at least one and probably more than one occasions, the two cars covered the same road, and they were filled to the brim with passengers. Alice vividly remembers a day in 1952, when she and Ian took her sister Edna – who was accompanied by her then boy-

Alice McLaren’s sturdy little Triumph Sports Coupe.

friend Merv – on a trip to Highbank and Mount Hutt in the Triumph. Now the thing to remember is the Triumph was a 2-seater, but had a dickie seat in the boot which accommodated Edna and Merv. Alice and Ian were up front.

The old Truck on a Truck on a Truck Trick, on parade down Ashburton’s East Street.

The ‘mother-in-law seat’

W

hy is a dickie seat called a dickie seat? Well actually its known by at least three names and several spellings. A rumble seat (American English), dicky seat, dickie seat or dickey seat (British English), sometimes called a mother-in-law seat, is an upholstered exterior seat which folded into the rear of a coach, carriage, or early motorcar. The usage of the word “dickie”

comes from the British word for a rumble seat, as such seats were often used for luggage before cars had integrated storage. When unoccupied, the space under the seat’s lid could be used for storing luggage. So who invented the rumble seat? According to the Automobilist Magazine in August 1958, it was Sir Hubert Malcolm Rhumble, a prominent English carriage designer in the late 1800s, who designed a coachman’s seat.

It’s uphill all the way from Ashburton, but the gradient increases significantly on the stretch between Methven and the Mount Hutt turn-off. But Ian knew what to do, and after changing down gears they made it up the road. Coming down was a different matter – top gear all the way and a bit faster too. Having achieved that, the four of them decided to go and have a look at the Highbank power station. Now they’re on a really steep road, but unlike the previous part of the journey this time the downhill run came first. And was no problem. But coming back up was. The four of them travelled down in the Triumph but only one of them – Ian – drove back up in it. The passengers not only enjoyed some great motoring that day, but some good exercise as well. Alice says she and Ian had some great trips in the little Triumph, but did not take on their honeymoon because Ian’s boss at the time lent them an Austin Ute, somewhat more suitable for their road trip. They kept the little Triumph until around 1955, when it was sold to the late Doug Robins. Their first child arrived and as Alice puts it “there was no room for the pram”. Later they purchased a Chev truck, a great workhorse for Ian’s business, which Smallbone Bros borrowed for their unusual display in a local street parade. Or as our sub-editor Steve dubbed it when he saw the photo, the old Truck on a Truck on a Truck Trick. Tricky!

■■ MID CANTERBURY SPORTS AWARDS

A sporting moment to treasure

Within the pile of nominations received each year for the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards, there are countless incredible achievements recorded. There are those which turned a sporting fixture on its head and led to success, then there are those individual performances which shone in a vast array of circumstances. That one single achievement might not be enough to get someone over the line for one of the major prizes of the awards, but it is enough to see them worthy of recognition for their efforts. The Mid Canterbury Sporting Moment of the Year is this year being awarded for the second time, and the 2020 recipient fits the bill perfectly. A story of a 16-year-old making his debut in one of New Zealand’s most prolific sporting trophies, the Hawke Cup, is significant within itself but for Mid Canterbury cricketer, Angus Jemmett it goes so much further. Despite his age and lack of experience playing at the most elite of levels in regional cricket in this country, Jemmett made the moment his own. Opening for Mid Canterbury and facing a talented and experienced Otago Country bowling attack, Jemmett kept his eye on the prize, playing beyond his years and notched an impressive century on debut to put his side in a strong position at the end of the first innings. And it was that effort, against so many odds that makes Jemmett a worthy recipient of Mid Canterbury’s Sporting Moment of the Year. NOTE: Full results of the 2020 Mid Canterbury Sports Awards will appear in Saturday’s edition of the Guardian. Angus Jemmett.

■■OPINION

Unfair time for Black to take a back seat By Hamish Bidwell

T

he irony is hard to escape. For years, the Blues have been nothing but a Super Rugby embarrass-

ment. Once the competition’s benchmark, their seemingly irresistible slide to also-ran status has been something to behold. Never mind the franchise’s financial clout or personnel riches. Forget all of New Zealand Rugby’s well-intentioned attempts to bring cohesion and credibility to the organisation. Nothing looked as if it would ever resuscitate this ailing outfit. And then it happened. Whether by accident or design, the Blues suddenly became an admirable and dependable side. Games that would have been lost in previous seasons were now being won, thanks in no small part to the accuracy and calm coming from Otere Black at first five-eighth. The Blues were fourth on the overall ladder when the 2020 competition came to a premature end, following some very fine away-from-home wins. It was one thing to go to South Africa and beat the Bulls and Stormers, but to then dispatch the Hurricanes 24-15 at Sky Stadium was quite another.

Otere Black has been producing the goods at first five for the Blues, but now has a star-studded line-up looking to take his spot.

Only none of those results count right now. They’re not even confined to the dustbin of history. No, thanks to Covid-19, those games don’t even exist. And, what’s more, the architect of those victories might become surplus to requirements too. Teams can be delicate little things.

The merest change in mood or personnel or culture can alter things entirely. Routine and repetition – particularly when you’re successful – become the order of the day, for fear of changing that winning habit. In theory, adding Beauden Barrett and Daniel Carter to the roster ought to be grounds for a

ticker tape parade. Both are all-time All Blacks greats who’ve also led franchise teams to the Super Rugby title. They’re also hugely marketable and popular players whose addition to the squad has seen interest in the Blues skyrocket. It’s just that, after years of fumbling around in the dark, the Blues have finally stumbled upon a winning method. A method that you assume will be discontinued once Barrett and Carter get their feet under the table. Again, the addition of those two makes the Blues look a lot better on paper. But it would be more than a little ironic if demoting Black from the role of primary playmaker meant an end to those wins as well. Aside from the sheer novelty of having games to watch and crowds in the stands, Super Rugby Aotearoa looms as a genuine competition. The poor old Highlanders might only be making up the numbers, but the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes and Crusaders will all believe they have the team to win the title. I tipped the Chiefs at the very start of the year and they’ll be glad to get a do-over, after home defeats to the Brumbies and Hur-

ricanes first time around. The Chiefs have a canny coach in Warren Gatland, and more than enough good players to succeed, but doubts probably persist about their winning mentality. The Crusaders have that in spades, obviously, and shouldn’t be any weaker for Sam Whitelock’s return from Japan and David Havili’s recovery from stomach surgery. Crusaders coach Scott Robertson also appears to be better than most at selling players on the notion of teamwork and sacrifice, and it might be that he proves the ultimate difference this season. Ardie Savea’s return will aid the Hurricanes, but they look a playmaker short of a real championship side. Not so the Blues. In Barrett, Carter, Black and even young Harry Plummer, there’s any number of game-drivers to choose from. The Blues have long had the forward pack to compete with the best teams. Where it’s fallen over for them has been at first five-eighth. Where composed and clinical performances were called for, a succession of Blues coaches got erratic efforts from their No.10s instead. Black had begun to change all that, but it looks like he’ll now be taking a back seat.

Williams team ready for spring attack Byerley Park trainers Peter and Dawn Williams are looking forward to a productive spring with a promising group of young horses. The husband-and-wife training partnership will be unlikely to be represented by runners when racing commences later this month

have around 25 in work at present, which is about the usual number.” July 1 looms as the date when many of the stable’s more established gallopers return to work, with Williams focusing on the next generation at present. “We are doing a lot of two and

but are encouraged by the young stock coming through the stable at present. “The horse numbers are holding up pretty well at Byerley Park,” Peter Williams said. “Everybody is bright and bubbly and pleased to be back and we

three-year-olds at the moment,” he said. “We have a lot of unraced two-year-olds that are rising three. “Our first batch back to the trials is likely to be at Te Aroha on July 7. “We shut down over the Covid-19 period and ours only came

into work on the 3rd or 4th of May.” Williams said he and Dawn, along with the horses, had thrived with the enforced break from racing. “It was actually quite enjoyable to be honest. We had a holiday and it didn’t cost us anything,” he quipped.

Highlanders’ debutants The Highlanders have named two debutants for tomorrow’s opening Super Rugby Aotearoa game against the Chiefs in Dunedin. Head coach Aaron Mauger has selected Sam Gilbert and Vilimoni Koroi in his matchday 23. Gilbert, who will start on the right wing, played for Canterbury last season and for the Crusader Knights earlier this year. Koroi was training with the All Black Sevens team but has rejoined the Highlanders since the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Josh Ioane returns to the number 10 jersey and Mitch Hunt reverts to fullback. Ioane spent the earlier part of the season in the midfield but will be comfortable returning to first-five where he has spent most of his career. Patelesio Tomkinson claims the midfield spot and will partner Rob Thompson, with the experienced Teihorangi Walden set to make his impact from the bench. Pari Pari Parkinson has worked his way back to a starting lock position and will partner Josh Dickson. The team will be captained by experienced hooker Ash Dixon who starts ahead of Liam Coltman this week with both likely to see significant game time. Highlanders: 1. Ayden Johnstone, 2. Ash Dixon (C), 3. Siate Tokolahi, 4. Paripari Parkinson, 5. Josh Dickson, 6. Shannon Frizell, 7. Dillon Hunt, 8. Marino Mikaele Tu’u, 9. Aaron Smith, 10. Josh Ioane, 11. Jona Nareki, 12. Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Whether you climb your way up or start off in a higher position, sooner or later everything under you must be learned. That’s your favourite part! You’ll gladly take on the challenge. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Shame, blame, complaining – these all get in the way of a good plan and a positive mindset. You will resist the temptation of such things and be guided to solutions to whatever ails you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Thinking is harder than it looks, which is why many want others to think for them. There are those who would take advantage of this. Give loved ones the benefit of your intellect and your protection. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Action is education today when the best way to learn, and perhaps the only way, is by doing. Until you apply yourself, you won’t know what you know. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Some relationships you seek. Others you earn. And then there are the ones you pick up by accident. Those are dealt to you by the hand of fate and will be your most profound teachers. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re not out to impress anyone, but you do have something to say. You wouldn’t mind if people were to come away from a conversation with you having more understanding than they started with. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re halfway up the mountain with the requisite vistas and views. It still feels like you’ve a long way to go to get to the top, but you’re worlds away from those who never embarked at all. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): True, some are not pulling their weight, but you’re currently unconcerned with the division of labour. You’ll focus on your own contribution to the team and leave pettiness to others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sometimes being a good leader, friend or partner means keeping your thoughts to yourself. Anyway, you don’t care if those around you think you’re smart or right. You care about spreading compassion. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’re more influential than you know, and there’s reason to be mindful of how others are experiencing you. There is intrinsic power in what you say, how you behave and in your casual statements. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): States of being are tricky. You know when you’re in the zone, but you’re not entirely sure how to get there. It’s worth figuring out, as your production triples when you’re in that frame of mind. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Most people don’t reach for a flashlight in the noonday sun, but that’s precisely the best time to find one and get it ready for the evening hour of necessity.

Hampstead and Celtic will meet in next weekend’s Watters Cup opener. By Adam Burns

adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

The draws for senior rugby in Mid Canterbury have been revealed ahead of the opening weekend in eight days’ time. A one-round Watters Cup competition kicks off next weekend, however it is understood local clubs have been in talks with neighbouring unions around further fixtures. This follows the scrapping of this year’s Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competitions as a casualty of Covid-19. Next weekend’s opening Watters Cup games see Hampstead

play Celtic, while Rakaia takes on Southern. It is understood Methven, who originally had the bye, will meet Mackenzie, with South Canterbury’s Hammersley Cup senior A competition kicking off a week later. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) chief executive Ian Patterson said clubs had been making arrangements with neighbouring unions. “That’s part of the framework,” he said. “The opportunity is there for the two bye teams in the Ellesmere and Mid Canterbury com-

petitions to play each other.” Ellesmere’s division 1 competition also kicks off next weekend. Hornby, who have the bye during the opening weekend of the Ellesmere competition, take on Hampstead in a pre-season matchup in Ashburton tomorrow. Player numbers and squad sizes at senior and colts level were strong heading into next weekend. “Funnily enough, with the shorter season and later start it’s meant quite a few players have made themselves available,” MCRU chief executive Ian Patterson said.

“That’s been one of the surprises.” However, the late start also meant that there was the crossover into calving season, which was challenging local clubs, he said. “That’s one of the reasons the main competition is running over one round. “We’ll just have to review what we can offer after August 1, based on player availability.” The union was still awaiting player registrations for JAB rugby before activity could commence from June 27. With a shift to Alert Level 1, it

meant JAB rugby could potentially begin sooner than what was first envisioned by the MCRU. “There’s also some coaching course requirements before the teams can start playing,” Patterson said. He said it was unclear how “formalised” the JAB programme would be this season, however he urged the need for prompt player registrations so numbers could be firmed up. Next weekend’s opening Senior B clashes comprise of Allenton versus Methven, Collegiate versus Southern and Mt Somers host Celtic.
