Fatal causes mayhem BY MATT MARKHAM

MATT.M@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A fatal accident on the Rakaia bridge yesterday afternoon caused major traffic disruptions across the district late into last night. Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident around 2.40pm after a crash between a car and a truck.

One person, who was the sole occupant of the car died as a result of the crash. Their next of kin had been advised last night but their name was still to be released. The truck driver was uninjured in the crash. The accident resulted in the bridge being closed for both directions and it was set to remain

closed into the early hours of this morning because the truck involved jack-knifed and it required a crane to remove it. Traffic was detoured through the Rakaia Gorge using State Highway 72 through to Methven, but it created mayhem on the roads with motorists facing massive delays. A second accident occurred

on the detour on Sharlands Road near Te Pirita around 3.50pm in which one person was flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries. That accident played a major role in much of the early disruption for those using the detour with the road down to one lane while emergency services attended the scene.

Motorists reported to the Guardian being stationary on either side of the main, one-lane, Rakaia Gorge bridge for more than an hour with traffic at a complete standstill due to the high number of vehicles on the road. Poor visibility due to some inclement weather at a higher altitude was also playing a part in the delays.

Free parking fails to reignite retail spending By Sue NewmaN

Free parking on Ashburton’s East Street was anticipated to boost the fortunes of inner town retailers but it has had the opposite effect, a new survey shows. Since 60 minute free parking was introduced in October last year, an Ashburton District Council commissioned survey shows that spending in the East Street precinct was down 4.1 per cent and 4.3 per cent for the rest of the CBD. Across the district the Marketview survey showed that spending was down 1.3 per cent. An odd quirk was that there had been more activity in Ashburton with increased customers and transactions but this had not translated into an increase in the amount of money spent in the district. Only food and liquor showed solid growth. In July 2016 a delegation of East Street retailers asked the council to trial free, one hour parking on East Street. The pay and display system that was in place had become a deterrent to shoppers, they said, because the ticketing machines were frequently out of ac-

They believed free parking would help boost flagging inner town retail. The council’s response was to install parking sensor domes that would monitor each of the

of Ashburton. The town centre would increasingly develop the appearance of an empty restaurant, unattractive to visitors who will vote with their feet. I urge you (the council) to set aside your disbelief and intransigence, look at the statistics and seek feedback before deciding on this issue,” she said. The survey showed that shopping habits were sporadic – numbers were up on Wednesdays and Fridays but down on other days of the week, particularly Thursdays and Saturdays. Peak shopping hours were 9am to 11am. With free parking on East Street, the council counted the cost in about $61,000 in lost parking meter income. At Thursday’s council meeting the free parking trial is up for discussion and councillors will debate a recommendation that a decision on free parking on East Street is deferred until the review of the council’s parking strategy and traffic options for the CBD have been completed and a report comes back to the council. In the interim free parking on East Street will continue.

tailer Carolyn Cameron said the figures shouldn’t be taken without some explanation; while free parking may not have increased retail spending it had slowed the rate of decline, she said. Traditional retailing had to adjust to exponential growth in online shopping, lifestyle changes where shopping had become a recreational activity and easy access to out-of-town shops, Cameron said. “Ashburton’s CBD is tired and old, with many empty shops and unattractive offerings such as second-hand shops and real estate agents. Against this background, anything we can do to retain and attract visitors to the town centre is vital.” The golden days of large parking revenues had gone and the number of visitors to bricks and mortar businesses was declining regardless of council strategies, she said. In her letter, Cameron made a strong pitch for the council to stick with free parking. “Reintroduction of parking fees would be a foolhardy measure with the potential to cause substantial further harm to the retailing infrastructure

M. bovis suspected on Mid Canty farm By Colin WillisCroft

Colin.w@theguardian.Co.nz

A property near Ashburton is likely to be infected with the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis. The Ministry for Primary Industries said yesterday that four new properties – three within a Winton farming enterprise and another in the Hastings district – had tested positive for the bacterial disease, while a property near Ashburton is strongly suspected as being infected. MPI’s director of response, Geoff Gwyn, said early indications are that all the properties have links with the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group through cattle movements. The South Canterbury based group of farms was where the disease was found for the first time in New Zealand in July of this year. “The Hastings and Ashburton properties were identified through our tracing programme and the Winton property was identified through the industry milk testing programme,” Gwyn said. “All of the movements we have been tracing are prior to 21 July, when the disease was first detected and notified to MPI. “The Hastings and Winton properties are now under a Restricted Place Notice under the Biosecurity Act. This effectively places them in quarantine lockdown – restricting the movement of animals and other risk goods on and off the farm. The suspect property is under voluntary movement controls until their status is confirmed. MPI is working closely with them.” Gwyn said MPI started investigating the property last week. Samples were taken and results are expected back from the lab by

Ministry for Primary Industries’ director of response, Geoff Gwyn the end of this week. If the property does test positive, legal restrictions will be put in place. The new developments were not good news, he said. “We’re still analysing what this means for the wider response. We’re dealing with a lot of uncertainty. Our investigators are building a picture of stock movements onto and off these farms, so we will not be making hasty decisions on next steps. “While it’s really disappointing to have these new properties, it is not totally unexpected. We know that this disease is spread through contact between animals and through the movement of stock – as is the case here. “It was always possible further infected properties would be found. Buying, selling and moving stock is a common practice in farming. A key part of our response has been identifying and

investigating animals that have moved to or from affected properties before Mycoplasma bovis was first detected. This tracing is complex detective work, which takes time. “I know an obvious question people will have is ‘Why has it taken this long to find these properties?’. The answer to that lies with the nature of this particular bacteria. “It is a tricky thing to find and (it) often hides within an animal, lying dormant and not revealing itself for weeks or months. Some cattle may be infected and never show signs of the disease. This is why we test multiple times using multiple kinds of tests. Sometimes to confirm the disease we have to test organ tissue from animals at slaughter, as was the case in Hastings. Gwyn said MPI would not publically identify the affected properties unless the owners approved.

A national whooping cough outbreak has hit Mid Canterbury. For the week ending December 8, the Canterbury District Health Board notified three cases of the highly infectious bacterial disease for the Ashburton District. Canterbury medical officer of health Ramon Pink warned Mid Cantabrians to be extra vigilant as they gather for Christmas and New Year celebrations, in order to protect young babies. “Infants aged up to one are particularly vulnerable, 43 per cent of those diagnosed since January this year were admitted to hospital,” Pink said. “Anyone with coughs should be especially careful if they are likely to come in contact with babies. Most adults don’t realise they have whooping cough, but it is highly contagious. “The best way to protect newborn infants is for pregnant women to get their free immunisation against whooping cough between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy, and take their baby for their free immunisations when they’re six weeks, three months and five months old.” The three Mid Canterbury cases follow two for the month

WHOOPING COUGH ■

Whooping cough is a highly infectious bacterial disease with cold-like symptoms progressing to a cough. Sometimes a whoop is heard as the person breathes in after coughing. However, small babies do not usually whoop. Whooping cough can affect people of any age, but is more serious in under twos. It can be fatal, particularly for babies under three months. New Zealand’s vaccination strategy for whooping cough is aimed at preventing disease in babies.

of November in the district. Outbreaks of whooping cough, or pertussis, occur every three to five years, says the Ministry of Health. New Zealand’s most recent national outbreak spanned from August 2011 to December 2013, with about 11,000 cases notified. A total of three deaths in babies and young children occurred during this period, with hundreds needing hospital treatment.

Mid Canterbury drought risk rises BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A lack of significant rain, on top of recent hot and dry conditions, has upped the risk of Mid Canterbury plunging into drought this summer. Updated MetService forecasts show rain yesterday and today may only result in about 10 millimetres, which is less than half of that initially forecast. Niwa climate scientist Nava Fedaeff said the organisation took into account a range of natural factors such as rainfall, soil moisture and evapotranspiration, when compiling drought index data. Mid Canterbury was now considered dry to very dry. Fedaeff said it was “not impossible” that the district could reach drought conditions by Christmas. However, it depended on the day-to-day weather, and one good day of rain could turn things around. When Niwa talked about drought, it referred to “meteorological drought”, taking into account the natural factors. Niwa advised the Ministry of Primary Industries, which took these and other factors, such as irrigation availability, into account before declaring “a medium scale or large scale adverse event”. Metservice forecaster Cameron Coutts said yesterday that rainfall today and yesterday may result in about 10 millimetres for Ashburton, although more could fall in the Mid

Canterbury foothills. Once this rain finished, long-range forecasts showed “a warm dry run” into Christmas, and there was no significant rain predicted during this period. Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers chairman Mike Salvesen said it would be “overkill” to call Mid Canterbury’s current situation a drought. It was, however, very unusual for almost the whole country to be this dry so early in summer. It meant there were no areas with lots of extra feed. And if farmers started unloading stock, it would be a question of who was going to buy it, and store stock prices might take a hit. He advised farmers facing decisions on irrigation prioritisation, destocking, once-a-day milking, and so on, to make decisions sooner rather than later. “It’s a case of watch this space at the moment, but it’s really early for it to be so dry, keep an eye on it and don’t put off making decisions,” Salvesen said. Farmers were coping with the dry conditions. “Farmers are pretty resilient,” Salvesen said. Right – Conditions are dry to very dry in Mid Canterbury, compared to extremely dry and drought in some southern areas of the North Island. GRAPHIC NIWA

Indian restaurant for Methven BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Tikka masala, tandoori, vindaloo and poppadoms. They are words of pure poetry to Indian food lovers, and those in Methven will no longer have to travel all the way to Ashburton to get their fix. A new Indian restaurant, yet to be named, is due to open in the ski town next month. Owner Manpreet Randhawa, of Christchurch, said yesterday he was looking forward to operating the restaurant, and would open both for lunch and dinner. He had already had many comments of support from Methven residents, both in person and on social media. Randhawa said he saw Methven as a growing town, busy in winter with hot pools planned, and he wanted to serve both the tourist and local markets. He believed the restaurant would be a good addition to Methven’s already diverse restaurant scene. Currently the town has a wide range of cuisines on offer, including Thai and Japanese, however, it has never had a restaurant solely dedicated to Indian food. Randhawa’s company, Randhawa Enterprises Limited, has applied to the Ashburton District Licensing Committee for the issue of an on licence, which would cover from 10am to 11pm Monday to Sunday. The objection period closes January 18.

An Indian restaurant planned for Methven’s Main Street is to open next month.

■ GREAT SANTA HUNT

Time to spot Santas by torchlight By Linda CLarke

linda.c@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Museum is gearing up for Santa fever on December 20 when hundreds of youngsters and their parents will pay a night-time visit to spot Santas by torchlight. It will be the eighth rendition of the Great Santa Hunt and museum director Tanya Robinson said 40 Santas would be hidden around the museum for people to find. The lights would be switched off at 5pm and torches would be needed to spot the bearded, red-suited guy. Robinson said senior curator MaryAnn Cowan had been picking up extra interesting Santa figures during the year and staff were fine-tuning details of the opening hunt next Wednesday. The Christmas spirit will last until January 31 and people can spot the Santas from December 21 during day-time opening hours. Robinson said her first Santa hunt last year was a buzz with up to 300 children and their caregivers coming through the doors for the torchlight hunt. She is expecting similar numbers this year. “I was totally unprepared for the numbers. It was incredible, we lost count.” She said museum staff had their favourite Santas, which included bushybearded versions, as well as cuddly Santas, a Santa on a train and a Santa made from wax.

Weeks spent assembling a cosy set, constructing creative costumes and rehearsing a merry storyline paid off yesterday when students delivered a festive Fairton School production. The performance of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas recounted the adventures of an outcast mouse, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

The school invited guests from Stepping Stones Preschool, Phoenix Preschool and Park Street Day Care to their morning dress rehearsal, before delivering an evening show for parents and families. The production took place at the Fairton Hall. Room 2 teacher Louise Smith said the students had been preparing the performance for four or five weeks.

A woman who died of meningococcal disease on the weekend had only just got married hours before. Jamieka McCarthy Harford, 26, died in Auckland on Saturday after falling ill during her wedding ceremony. She later died of the bacterial infection linked to meningitis. Harford’s husband told Newshub that her sudden death was a huge shock. “Her passing was a huge shock to everybody to lose her so quickly and this has been incredibly difficult to process,” he said. “She was taken from us without notice by a horrible, deadly disease.” The marriage took place on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, with photos depicting the smiling bride walking down the aisle on a sunny golf course. A family statement to Newshub said, “Jamieka was so happy to be married and the wedding was a beautiful, happy occasion surrounded by love.” Her family described Jamieka as “the most kind-hearted person in the world who loved life and always put others before herself. She was a beloved wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. She will be missed forever.” The Auckland Regional Public Health Service has confirmed it is investigating the death which was likely caused by meningococcal disease. - NZME

OUR VIEW

What did 2017 bring our district?

Matt Markham

EDITOR

S

omeone asked the other day what I felt was one of the most significant things to happen in the Ashburton District this year and in the first instance nothing stuck out above anything else. As the end of December approaches, it’s a time for reflection on the year gone by and now that I’ve been asked the question the list of possibilities seems to grow by the day. As a district we’ve seen, lived through and handled a lot in the past 12 months. Some of it we have had control of. A lot of it we haven’t. A few significant moments and factors do stick out though. The closure of Silver Fern Farms Fairton plant was a significant one for the district. Jobs lost, futures in doubt and not a whole heap of clarity for anyone about what was going to happen. There was also the intense flooding we suffered in July – remember that day it rained and rained and it looked like it would never stop. Our roads became rivers and our rivers became raging rapids with roads closed and towns shut off to the rest of the district. Controversially though, the Ashburton i-SITE closure has seemed to stir up the most topical conversation. But what is most bizarre about its impact on the district is that we were all so late in coming to the party on what was actually going on. The decision had been made for quite some time before there was any real sort of reaction and what followed could best be described as a case of the public biting back at establishment for their part in the closure of such a valued part of the community – or, at least it would seem it was such a valued part of the community now that it’s not there. These are just three of the significant situations the district found itself in through the course of 2017 and you could probably make a list with 10 times as many as that as well, but we don’t have the space for that. Perhaps at some point we should sit down and compile a comprehensive list before the year is all done. If you’ve got any suggestions, don’t be afraid to get in touch.

YOUR VIEW Ashburton Domain On Sunday we made our annual pre-Christmas family picnic to the Ashburton Domain. As keen gardeners we are well aware of the lack of rain and your recent hosing restrictions. As we wandered the domain, I was shocked at the condition of many areas. In recent years I recall seeing work being done in the domain to update the water supply (wells). Surely, when going to the expense of planting annually, they should have priority for some water. There was very little evidence of any watering. The area surrounding the aviaries is appalling – worked, dry ground, long grass up to a metre high and empty aviary. On our way home we stopped at the town clock – oh my god, the state of Baring Square. Ashburton is beautiful and known for its beautiful parks and reserves. I would like to learn, through your media, the council’s explanation? What next? No information centre, unkempt gardens … Dixy Robbins Timaru

id you know that there are more than 20 Chorus phone cabinets dotted in and around Ashburton? It’s possible that you have passed by these mainly beige and green boxes regularly but they’ve never really caught your eye. New-York based Kiwi artist Bruce Greig has, however, begun to change their image by giving three of the district’s most prominent cabinets a refreshing new look. Chorus approached the talented artist to provide a makeover to its cabinets while he was visiting family in Christchurch during 2014. Greig has had a long career, starting in Christchurch more than 36 years ago. He has painted countless murals all over the world and even worked on film sets including the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Keep an eye out for Greig’s under-the-sea themed mural outside the Tinwald Tavern; the Van Gogh inspired landscape nearby on Manchester Street; and his gorgeous portrait on Harrison Street near the Allenton shops. Greig’s fun and colourful images have really helped to brighten up the district. I liked them so much that I approached Chorus and asked whether we could arrange to have more cabinets painted but this time by local artists from around the district. Chorus generally commission murals on cabinets that are regularly hit by graffiti, although it was more than happy to work with us, despite our low rates of graffiti. So, in early 2018, two new Chorus cabinets will be given an artistic treatment. After some discussion with visual arts professionals, two artists were identified and asked whether they would be prepared to work on a cabinet each. Young artist Ben Lysaght has taken inspiration from the beautiful lupin fields around the district and will decorate the cabinet box outside Rosebank Resthome on Walnut Avenue. Award winning artist Sarah Harper will paint an aerial view of an agricultural crop on a

cabinet near the intersection of Oak Grove and Alford Forest Road. I can’t wait to see these new designs! Once completed, they will be shared nationwide on Chorus’ website and social media, and may even be considered for its annual Chorus cabinet art calendar. In 2010, Chorus began a trial in Auckland to test if art works on cabinets decreased the frequency of tagging. The project proved successful, so the company commissioned artists to paint cabinets right across the country. Look out for them if you’re heading away over the holiday period – they’re sure to put a smile on your face. Another thing that’s already brightening up our district is the gorgeous Christmas decorations adorning our streets, landmarks and shops. Looking up and seeing tinsel on the clock tower and the giant Christmas tree truly gets me into the Christmas spirit. I hope you all have a great Christmas break with your loved ones and have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the summer.

Ash falls thick like snow Ash fell like snow and heavy smoke had residents gasping for air as a huge Southern California wildfire exploded in size, becoming the fifth largest in state history and driving celebrities from a wealthy hillside enclave. Tens of thousands have fled their homes as flames churn through foothill towns near Santa Barbara, the latest flareup after a week of wind-fanned wildfires throughout the region. With acrid smoke thick in the air, even residents not under evacuation orders took the chance to leave, fearing another shutdown of a key coastal highway that was closed intermittently last week. smoke-shrouded home. “Praying for the people in my area,” he said to his Instagram followers. “Hope everybody’s getting out safe like we are, and thanks for the prayers and thoughts. And good luck to the firefighters, we need you!” Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres tweeted that neighbours were helping each other and their animals get to safety.

“I’m sending lots of love and gratitude to the fire department and sheriffs. Thank you all,” she wrote. The blaze has destroyed more than 750 buildings, officials said. It was partially contained after burning nearly 930 square kilometres of dry brush and timber. Amtrak cancelled service through the city of Santa Bar-

bara, and its nearly 200-yearold mission church was closed because of smoke and ash. Authorities issued repeated alerts about unhealthy air and warned people to stay indoors, avoid vigorous outdoor activities and not do anything to stir up ash. Dr Helene Gardner, an expert in air quality at University of California, Santa Barbara, watched ash fall “like a fine snow” from her home after the school postponed final exams until January. She said her environmental sciences students got a kick from the fact that the delay was directly related to their field of study. Gardner warned that the air alerts should be taken seriously because of airborne particulates – “nasty buggers” that can lodge in lungs and cause respiratory problems. – AP

Bruce Brown dies Documentary filmmaker Bruce Brown, known for surfing movie Endless Summer, died in California at the weekend of natural causes. He was 80. Brown was born in San Francisco and grew up on Long Beach, California before briefly moving to Hawaii where he began making films and worked with submarines for the US Navy. Brown became a documentary filmmaker and released his first film Slippery When Wet in 1958. He was Oscar nominated for the 1971 motorcycle racing film On Any Sunday. The 1966 Endless Summer was narrated by Brown and starred surfers and board shapers Mike Hynson and Robert August.

■ AUSTRALIA

Politician forced to resign over Chinese links Labour senator Sam Dastyari has quit the federal parliament but insists he’s a patriotic Australian, despite recent scrutiny of his dealings with a Chinese businessman and political donor. The NSW representative and factional colleague of Bill Shorten was sacked from his senior parliamentary roles by the Labor leader last week. He’s now decided the best service he can render the federal party is to not return to the Senate in 2018. “I know Australia needs a Labor government and I refuse to let my personal situation put that prospect at risk,” he said in Sydney after declar-

ing his love for the party. The soon-to-be ex-senator said he was a “loyal, patriotic Australian”. He would leave the Senate with “nothing but good thoughts for our country and for our people” and knowing he had always honoured his parliamentary oath. Shorten said it was the right decision. “Sam Dastyari is a good, decent and loyal Australian, and an effective parliamentarian, but his judgement has let him down and now he has paid the heaviest price,” he said in a statement. “I am sure Sam will continue to make a valuable con-

tribution to our country in whatever he chooses to do.” The coalition government had asked the Senate’s powerful privileges committee to investigate Senator Dastyari’s conduct after it was revealed he had told Communist Partyaligned businessman Huang Xiangmo – who’s donated to both Labor and the coalition – his phone was probably being tapped by Australian agencies. Huang’s company last year paid Senator Dastyari’s personal legal bills and the businessman had appeared with him at a media conference held for Chinese media, where he contradicted Labor’s

position on the South China Sea issue. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday said Senator Dastyari had “quite plainly been acting in the interests of another government or another power”. Senator Dastyari said he would continue to be an active, grassroots NSW Labor Party member. The party now has a few months to choose his replacement, who needs to be endorsed by a joint sitting of the NSW parliament, which is unlikely to happen before February 6, 2018. Federal parliament is due to resume in February. – AAP

U2 album shatters record U2 has toppled a rather impressive Billboard record. The Irish supergroup’s latest album, Songs of Experience, has hit No. 1 on the US Billboard chart. That makes U2 the only group in music history to have No. 1 albums four decades in a row: The 1980s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s. A few solo artists have also pulled off having four consecutive decades of No. 1 albums –namely, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Janet Jackson — but not a music group. The Beatles come close to U2’s record, sort of. They had No. 1 albums in the ’60s, ’70s, ’90s and ’00s (the ’80s broke their streak). But unlike U2, The Beatles’ chart-topping albums in the later decades were obviously not new studio albums.

Holiday park nights jumped 16 per cent to 545,000. The hotel occupancy rate edged up 0.3 percentage points to 68.2 per cent, while the holiday park rate rose 1.9 per cent to 16.3 and the backpacker rate advanced 0.5 percentage points to 41.0 per cent. ■ THE WAREHOUSE

Electric vehicle charging at Warehouse The Warehouse has begun installing electric vehicle charging stations at a number of its stores in the South Island. The retailer already has two EV charging stations at its Auckland support office in Northcote, and one in Albany. Now Invercargill will be the first South Island store to get an electric vehicle charging station, and 20 others are planned as part of its environmental sustainability commitment. Charging stations will be free to use for at least six months, after that a nominal charge of less than $1 will kick in, The Warehouse environment general manager

Greg Nelson said. The project is part-funded by the Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund. “It’s awesome that we’re able to utilise our scale to support the EV infrastructure in New Zealand and we hope that it encourages more New Zealand motorists to consider an electric vehicle,” Nelson said. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) , which administers the fund, welcomed The Warehouse’s lead to support electric vehicles. “This project, and the promotion of it by the Warehouse, will make EV charging infrastructure

highly visible to large numbers of shoppers and that will give confidence to consumers thinking about buying an electric vehicle,” ECCA chief executive Andrew Caseley said. Over the next seven months charging stations will be installed at The Warehouse stores in 18 towns and cities, and will be set up at designated parking spaces at the front of the stores, capable of charging two vehicles at a time. The Warehouse is one of several New Zealand businesses committed to having 30 per cent of its vehicle fleet electric by the end of 2019. – NZME

New Zealand national guest nights rose in October from a year earlier as demand was bolstered by good weather, a longer ski season and more school holidays. Total guest nights gained 4.8 per cent to 3.15 million in October from the same month a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. Guest nights in the North Island rose 2.5 per cent while South Island guest nights climbed 8.4 per cent. Of that, domestic guest nights rose 9.5 per cent in the South Island, while international guest nights advanced 7.4 per cent. Producers will pay to have each batch of their manuka honey tested, at about $150 per 200-litre drum, O’Connor said, adding that the price of genuine manuka honey may increase due to the certification. “There are still cowboy operators out there. In fact, there are two in court at the moment, so we have proof of adulteration over the years,” O’Connor said. “The cost will fall on producers, but relative to the value of the honey this is a very small amount, and I think those that are genuinely exporting manuka honey will see this as a very small cost to secure their product and its reputation.” The test can also identify whether the manuka honey is monofloral – produced by the nectar of a single plant – or multifloral. – NZME

Manuka honey will be given an official marker under a new testing regime issued by the Ministry for Primary Industries, as the UK recognises New Zealand’s rights to the name. Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor announced the new standard for the honey yesterday. The manuka honey industry is currently worth around $180 million to New Zealand every year, but there have been concerns about the authenticity of products sold as manuka honey as more was being sold than was being produced in New Zealand, and it was until now not regulated. “The longer this was left unresolved, the more the manuka honey industry and New Zealand’s reputation was at stake,” O’Connor said. The export requirements on manuka labelling will come into force from February 5, 2018. O’Connor also said the UK’s trademark agency has just agreed to accept that manuka honey is only from New Zealand. In August, Comvita published

Gooseberries, more than just dessert G

ooseberries might be an old-fashioned fruit and they may not be as commonly found in home gardens as they once were, but if you manage to get your hands on some, they’re an absolute treat. The tart, zingy berries are benefiting from the early, very hot summer and are racing towards ripeness. They freeze beautifully and can be used in a variety of ways. Most people associate the berries with desserts but they also make wonderful chutneys and relishes and they’re good as a fresh sauce served with meat.

Gooseberry and custard pies 6 sheets filo pastry 50g butter, melted 2T caster sugar Compote 200g caster sugar 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped out 500g gooseberries, topped and tailed Custard 300ml double cream 300ml full-fat milk 2 vanilla pods, split and seeds scraped out 4 large egg yolks 50g caster sugar 20g plain flour 20g cornflour ■ Put the sugar and vanilla pod with seeds in a saucepan with 3T water. ■ Bring to the boil swirling rather than stirring. ■ Drop in the gooseberries and simmer for 20 mins or until half the liquid has bubbled off. ■ Divide between four small pie dishes and put in the fridge to cool ■ Put the cream, milk and vanilla pods with seeds in a saucepan and bring just to the boil. ■ In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, flour and cornflour together. ■ Pour the hot milk mixture over the egg mixture, whisking constantly. ■ Rinse out the saucepan, then pour the custard mix-

ture into the pan. ■ Cook on a low heat, whisking, for 5-6 mins until thick. ■ Pour through a sieve over a large jug and discard the vanilla pods ■ Then pour the custard over the gooseberries in the pie dishes. ■ Leave to cool. ■ Heat oven to 180°C. ■ Lay one sheet of the filo on the work surface and brush with the melted butter. ■ Put another sheet on top. ■ Repeat with the rest of the sheets. ■ On the final layer, scatter over the sugar, then cut the pastry into four rectangles. ■ Lightly scrunch each rectangle and place loosely on top of each pie dish. ■ Bake the pies in the oven for 20 mins or until the pastry is golden and caramelised.

Gooseberry crumble 500g gooseberry, topped and tailed 85g caster sugar 175g plain flour 75g demerara sugar 85g salted butter, chilled ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Toss the gooseberries with the caster sugar. ■ Spread in the bottom of a medium ovenproof baking dish with 2T water. ■ Put the flour, butter and a big pinch of salt in a bowl. ■ Rub together with your fingertips until you have a rough breadcrumb texture. ■ Mix in the demerara sugar. ■ Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the gooseberries. ■ Bake in the oven for 45-50 minutes until top is pale golden and

crunchy and the gooseberries bubbling.

Gooseberry, chilli and ginger chutney 500g gooseberries 3 large onions 600ml wine vinegar 250g soft brown sugar 1T salt 1T grated fresh ginger 2 finely chopped red chillis 1/2 t cayenne pepper ■ Gently cook the gooseberries in a little water until they have softened. ■ Add chopped onions and vinegar, cooking for 10 minutes ■ Add all other ingredients ■ Boil gently until some of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture has a slightly thick consistency. ■ Cool slightly and pot into clean jars with screw top lids.

Gooseberry relish 5C gooseberries 1C brown sugar 1 1/2 C raisins, seedless 1 onion, peeled and sliced 3T salt 1/4 t cayenne pepper 1t prepared mustard 1t freshly grated ginger 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1t turmeric 1 quart vinegar ■ Chop gooseberries, raisins, and onion. ■ Add other ingredients. ■ Heat slowly to boiling.

■ Simmer 3/4 hour. Stir frequently ■ Rub through coarse sieve or mouli ■ Reheat and pour into sterilised jars. ■ Seal.

Asian pork salad with gooseberry dressing 500g piece pork tenderloin, trimmed of silvery sinew Coriander and mint to garnish Marinade 2T soy sauce 1 garlic clove, crushed 1T light brown sugar Dressing 100g gooseberries topped and tailed 2T caster sugar 1 long, hot red chilli, shredded 2T light olive oil 1T fish sauce Salad 1/2 cucumber, cut into small cubes 6 spring onions, shredded lengthways 100g radishes, halved ■ Mix the marinade ingredients together in a shallow container or food bag. ■ Cut the pork into 2 pieces. ■ Slash a few times, then leave it to steep in the marinade for at least

30 mins, or up to 24 hours. ■ Finely chop the gooseberries in a food processor or by hand. ■ Put the sugars and chilli in a saucepan with 1T water. ■ Heat until the sugar dissolves, bring to a simmer. ■ Add the gooseberries and all their juices. ■ Take off the heat and stir in the oil and fish sauce. ■ Cool. ■ Heat grill pan. ■ Shake the excess marinade from the pork. ■ Sear for a total of 20-25 mins, depending on thickness, until charred but still juicy. ■ Rest the pork on a plate for 5 mins. ■ Divide the salad ingredients between 4 plates. ■ Slice meat on diagonal. ■ Serve on top of the salad – spoon any resting juices over the meat. ■ Top with 2T gooseberry dressing and the herbs.

Gooseberry and sage sauce Gooseberries make a great sauce for meat – try this with roast pork or pork chops. Serves six. 400g gooseberries, topped and tailed 1T water (if using fresh berries) 2T caster sugar 1T finely chopped fresh sage ■ Put the gooseberries in a pan with the sugar. If using fresh berries, add a tablespoon of water; frozen ones will not need any additional liquid. ■ Bring to a simmer and cook gently, stirring from time to time, for 10-15 minutes, until you have a pulpy sauce. ■ Stir in the sage, then leave to cool.

Chill in refrigerator. ■ Hot smoking the salmon using a hooded BBQ: Preheat the BBQ on high with the lid up for approx 5-8 minutes (depending on the BBQ). The grill plate needs to be hot without retaining any heat under the

As soon as they begin to smoke heavily place your salmon on the warming rack, roll the lid down and turn off the gas, it is important at this stage to leave the lid down for at least 4-5 minutes to allow the smoke to form and flavour the salmon. Be very careful not to overcook the salmon. As soon as you see white protein leeching out of the side of the salmon it will be cooked. Bamber joins SVG team World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hour winner Earl Bamber will partner 2016 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen in the Pirtek Endurance Cup next year. Bamber will link up with his fellow Kiwi at the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast events next year, forming a formidable partnership at Red Bull Holden Racing. “I am super excited to be joining Shane and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team in 2018,” said Bamber. “It has been a goal of mine for many years to participate in the Bathurst 1000 and I’m happy to be joining one of the best teams and drivers in pit lane. “Shane and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team are the benchmark in Supercars and I look forward to supporting Shane in his 2018 championship bid.” Australian driver Matt Campbell raced with van Gisbergen this year but struggled to match the pace of the leading co-drivers. The New York Yankees have pulled off one of the biggest trades in recent baseball history by acquiring slugger Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins. Stanton, 28, finished 2017 as the National League MVP after leading the Majors in home runs (59), RBIs (132) and slugging percentage (.631). The deal is the largest by total dollar value in the history of team sports. Stanton’s 13-year contract is worth a total of $US325 million ($430m). By comparison, the deal which brought footballer Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in August was worth $270m over five years. Only twice before in baseball history has a reigning MVP been traded, first in 1914 when the Chicago White Sox acquired Eddie Collins from Philadelphia, and again in 2004 when the Yankees got Alex Rodriguez from Giancarlo Stanton the Texas Rangers. “I’m glad to be here and part of the New York Yankees,” Stanton said as he was introduced during Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings in Florida. “This is going to be a great new chapter in my life and career and I want to thank everybody involved to get this done.” Stanton was one of only two players to hit more than 50 home runs in 2017, with the other – Aaron Judge – already on New York’s books. The only other time in Major League history that a team boasted two players who had hit 50 home runs the previous season was when the Yankees fielded Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in 1962. - PA

The World Super 6 will have a distinct English flavour this summer after 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett became the latest player to confirm his appearance at the Perth golf tournament. Former world No.1 Lee Westwood and world No.16 Tyrrell Hatton are other high-profile Englishmen who have already signed up for the February 8-11 event. Brett Rumford will return to defend his crown, with organisers hopeful of luring a big fish from the PGA Tour to further bolster the event’s star power. - AAP

Bike issues costly for Currie By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Braden Currie has come painstakingly close to defending his title at the IRONMAN Taupo 70.3 over the weekend after a mechanical issue with his bike limited him to second place. The event was already one out of the ordinary after toxic algae forced the swimming leg to be changed to a running leg, and having his bike stuck in a single gear was a curveball. Despite this, Currie remained philosophical after another mechanical set-back altered his ability to produce his best performance. “I’ve learnt to accept it when things like this happen. “There wasn’t anything I could do other than race as hard as I could within the parameters set by the one gear I had available on my bike,” he said. Having only one gear meant Currie had to change his mindset, and adapt his race plan in order to minimise the damage on the bike. “Up the hills I was out of my seat climbing as hard as I could and on the flat I was on my seat spinning like a maniac. “It was frustrating but that’s racing and these things happen,” he said. At the turn around at the township of Reporoa, Currie was holding onto fifth place, 22 seconds down on the leader Benjamin Collins. Heading back towards Taupo, Phillips made a late move to arrive at T2 in the lead. Currie was 2.34 back in a pack, which included fellow Kiwis Callum Millward and Dylan McNeice. Transitioning onto the 21.1km run, which takes in Lake Taupo and was lined with spectator support, Currie initially started to eat into Phillips’ lead. At the end of the first lap the gap was down to 1:55 but by the last lap, Phillips had held

Injury blow for Jets Newcastle’s high-flying A-League campaign has suffered a huge blow with striker Roy O’Donovan sidelined for three months with a groin tear. Jets coach Ernie Merrick insisted the two injuries are unrelated, but will now have to navigate the majority of the regular season without his star marskman. - AAP

Immobile sees red Lazio striker Ciro Immobile was sent off as Torino ended a four-match winless streak with a 3-1 away victory in Serie A yesterday. Immobile, who has 15 goals this season, was shown a direct red before the break for jerking his head at Nicolas Burdisso and landing his shoulder in the defender’s face. Immobile, who previously played for Torino, had been protesting against an apparent handball by Iago Falque on a cross of his inside the area. - DPA

Girona take out derby Girona have edged out Spanish La Liga derby opponents Espanyol 1-0 to jump up to ninth in the standings. David Timor struck from close range during firsthalf stoppage time to give the visitors – in their maiden top-flight campaign – maximum points. The victory took Girona to 20 points, just one adrift of the European places. “We had to fight hard for the three points,” Timor said. “We can’t get carried away. We have to keep picking up points.” - DPA

Cracker hits ballboy Methven’s Braden Currie was powerful on the run at the IRONMAN Taupo 70.3 last weekend. on to his advantage and Currie crossed the line in three hours 38 minutes 32 seconds, just under two and a half minutes behind Phillips. “Mike had a really good race. “I knew he would be strong all day. “I tried to mow him down on the run but I just didn’t have

enough left in the tank today,” Currie said. The race wraps up a busy schedule that has seen Currie compete in both the Hawaiibased World IRONMAN – where his race was altered by a flat tyre and a time penalty – and XTERRA Championships in October and place third in the IRONMAN

70.3 Asia Pacific Championships, held in Sydney, a fortnight ago. Currie now switches back to his multisport roots and will swap swimming training for kayaking as he prepares to race Red Bull Defiance with fellow triathlete Dougal Allan, in Wanaka, on January 20 and 21.

The Cypriot first-division match between APOEL Nicosia and AEL Limassol has been interrupted for more than two hours, after fan clashes and the injury of a ball boy. Riot police were required to intervene and the match finished amid near-empty stands yesterday. Referee Demetris Mashias halted play late into the first half in Limassol after a ball boy appeared to have been hurt by a firecracker thrown from a section of APOEL supporters. - NZME

Venus granted Classic wildcard berth Leading New Zealand tennis player Michael Venus could face a busy week at the ASB Classic in Auckland after being given a main draw singles wild card spot. Ranked 15th in the world in doubles, Venus doesn’t have a singles ranking but is rated the premier Kiwi in both formats by tournament director Karl Budge. The invitation for January’s tournament caps a breakthrough year for Venus, who claimed the French Open doubles crown with his American partner Ryan Harrison. The pair went on to reach the semi-finals of the season-ending ATP Finals tournament in London in November.

“I think Mike is New Zealand’s best singles player,” Budge said. “He has done an incredible job each time he has played main draw for us in recent years and has earnt the right to have another crack. “That, coupled with the unbelievable year he has had made it a pretty simple decision for us.” Venus, 30, will seek his second ASB Classic doubles title, having won alongside Croat Mate Pavic two years ago. “I love coming home to play. “I’ve had some success in the past and there’s no place I’d rather play than in front of my family, friends and the Kiwi fans on centre court,” he said. - NZME

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner believes Manchester City’s “extraordinary” form has forced Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to wave the white flag in the Premier League title race. Conte said his champions were out of the running after their 1-0 defeat at West Ham and they will look to bounce back at Huddersfield overnight. Wagner said City’s superb form rather than Chelsea’s shortcomings has seen Pep Guardiola’s side emerge as runaway leaders. - PA

Gunners reveal depth

Michael Venus will be a busy player at the ASB Classic.

Jack Wilshere believes Arsenal demonstrated their strength in depth against Southampton as substitute Olivier Giroud’s late leveller earned them a 1-1 draw. The France international headed home with two minutes remaining to cancel out Charlie Austin’s early opener. Wilshere, who was also a second-half substitute at St Mary’s, insists Giroud’s presence on the bench shows how strong Arsenal’s squad is. - NZME

In brief Birchley chases Millions Liam Birchley is plotting another crack at next month’s Karaka Million (1200m) at Ellerslie. The Queensland trainer produced Sarge in Charge to finish runner-up in 2009 and won the following year with Sister Havana, a feat he replicated with Hardline in 2015. This time around, his hopes rest with Magic Mystery, a debut second last month. “Liam told me he’s hoping to get enough money at his next start to qualify,” said Sam Williams, who sold the colt to Birchley for $170,000. - NZME

Vi Lee leaves rivals in the dust at trials Two-year-old pacing filly, Vi Lee has them covered in the hands of Jeremy Markham at yesterday’s Ashburton workouts at the Ashburton Racecourse. Trained by Stephen Boyd, the daughter of little-known sire, Prodigal Seelster worked her way to the front inside the first 100 metres of the one-mile heat and controlled the tempo from there on before producing some slick final sectionals to win comfortably from Shamrock Bromac and Gerard O’Reilly. Vi Lee paced the one mile trip in 2:05.2, with closing sectionals of 59.0 seconds for the last 800 metres and 27.7 for the final 400 metres.

■ SEVERE SUSPENSION

Purdon to appeal Mark Purdon will appeal a suspension handed down by Western Australian stewards last week, but won’t seek a stay of proceedings which would see him able to drive Vincent on Friday night in Auckland. Purdon was suspended on Friday night for 26 days for a racing incident in the early stages of the Group One Golden Nugget in which he drove the winner, Ultimate Machete. Less than half an hour after cruising to Inter Dominion glory with champion pacer, Lazarus, Purdon was charged with forcing a horse to cover more ground than is necessary when he pushed Ultimate Machete clear of the markers racing into the first bend. “I thought it was a smart move at the time,” Purdon lamented on his website. “But though another horse is not checked, there is a regulation to cover it.” Purdon was also fined a grand total of $1000 for comments he made to the stewards during the process with half of that fine suspended. Purdon is appealing not only the length of the suspension handed down but also the whole conviction in the hope that a re-

when Lazarus will compete in the Freemantle and Western Australian Pacing Cups in the middle of the month. With the legendary horseman temporarily resigned to the

stands, the All Stars camp have been forced into playing some musical chairs for racing this Friday night at Alexandra Park. The stable’s two leading contenders for the Auckland Cup; Vincent and Heaven Rocks will both tackle the Franklin Cup. Natalie Rasmussen confirmed to NZ Harness News that she would take the reins on last season’s New South Wales and New Zealand Derby winner, Vincent, with Tim Williams taking the drive on the brilliant, but erratic, Heaven Rocks. “That will be the way we will go for now while we wait and see what transpires with Mark’s appeal,” Rasmussen said. The stable has 17 runners engaged at Friday night’s premier meeting and Purdon’s absence has meant some plum pick-up drives for others. Tony Herlihy has been booked to drive last season’s two-yearold of the year, Spankem, who will lock horns with unbeaten stablemate, Chase Auckland in the Alabar 3YO Classic while Dexter Dunn will continue his association with Titan Banner, who is back in the All Stars’ care. He will join Vincent and Heaven Rocks in a three-pronged attack on the Franklin Cup.- NZHN

Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards have two well-credentialled youngsters to lead the stable’s defence of a prized title at Ellerslie next month. Impressive last-start winner Al Hasa and the undefeated Avantage are on target for the Karaka Million, a race the Te Akau operation claimed last season with Melody Belle. “Al Hasa will go to the Eclipse on New Year’s Day and he’s just got to keep improving, and we believe he will, and then it will be three and a-half weeks into the Million,” Richards said. - NZME

Banned for a year A horse trained by Robbie Laing has been banned from racing for 12 months after a blood sample taken before she raced at Mornington was found to contain an anabolic steroid. Stewards have told Laing of the confirmatory findings of the sample taken from Little Indian before a benchmark 70 handicap on September 30, and stewards are continuing investigations. Racing Analytical Services Limited reported the blood sample was shown to contain trenbolone. - AAP

Future looking bright Former Olympic hockey gold medallist Michael “Mouse” Brennan already has his sights set on the next Inter Dominion. Brennan thinks his emerging star Mista Shark will fly his stable flag in the Melbourne Inter Dominion next year. “He’s going places. Look at the way he won his heat and the final of this series,” Brennan said. “He’ll be my Melbourne Inter Dominion horse in 12 months time.” - HRNZ

Sixth win for Shadow Let’s hope Shadow Sax stays sound. Emma Stewart’s injury-plagued star made it six wins on end – and 16 wins from 24 career starts – when he won the Geelong Cup on Saturday. It was closer than expected though with former classy thereyear-old Cant Refuse running a great race for third and old-stager Messini a close fourth. - HRNZ

Red Excitement back Red Excitement has shown trainer Gerald Ryan enough to suggest he has again found form and is ready to take his place in the Villiers Stakes at Randwick. The gelding put in a breathtaking performance in the Chelmsford Stakes when he led by many lengths in an attempt to get far enough in front to keep Winx at bay. The daring tactics were scuppered when she chased him down and he appeared to lose his way in his next few starts. But his closing third last Saturday has restored Ryan’s faith he is ready for Saturday’s 1600m-feature. - AAP

■ YOUNG DRIVERS

In brief

Kiwi trio take on the best Three young Kiwi drivers are in Queensland for the week, taking part in the Australasian Young Drivers Championship. Dylan Ferguson, Sheree Tomlinson and Kimberly Butt were selected, in accordance with set criteria, based on their results from the last racing season. The series kicks off with four heats at Redcliffe tonight, where the three Kiwis will take on representatives from six Australian states as well as defending champion Toddy McCarthy, from Sydney. The series will continue at Albion Park on Friday night and conclude on the same track on Saturday night. Besides bragging rights, the winner will receive a brand-new Rio Meteor Sulky worth over $6000. Butt, who drove 20 winners last season and already has seven to her name this term, is thrilled to be selected for the prestigious competition. “I’m very excited and grateful to have the opportunity to be on this trip in Queensland – it’s always a goal for any junior driver. “To drive in Australia is a huge thrill and it’s also a chance to make new friends and connections. Butt has drawn a mixed bag of chances on night one. “I’ve had a look at my drives but don’t know too much about the form here, so will have to do a bit more study on them,” she said.

Her best prospects for maximum points are likely to be Calcavado in Heat 1 and Make A Point in Heat 2, according to Queensland commentator Chris Barsby. Barsby believes Tomlinson, who won New Zealand’s richest trotting race last month at age 19, potentially has the best book of the three Kiwis on night one, narrowly ahead of Butt. A trip to a theme park on the Gold Coast, as well as a visit to Ronald McDonald House are on the drivers’ itinerary during time away from the track. They will be teaming up to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House of South East Queensland, which provides free accommodation and support services for the families of hospitalised children. New Zealand has a good recent record in the annual competition. Drivers from this country have won three of the last six editions via Robbie Close (2015), Andre Poutama (2014) and Joshua Dickie (2011). Other winners have been Jay Abernethy (2006), Mark Jones (1999) and Lauren Pearson (1998). This year’s Australian state representatives are Michael Grantham from Western Australia, Jayden Brewin (South Australia), Chris Geary (New South Wales), Matt Howlett (Tasmania), Jason Lee (Victoria) and Narissa McMullen (Queensland). - NZHN

First-up Concorde bid Stakes performer Jimmy Rea will make his New Zealand debut next month. A multiple winner in Singapore for premiership-winning trainer Mark Walker, the Kevin Hickman-owned gelding is now in the Matamata stable of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards but has yet to race here. Jimmy Rea joined their Queensland team earlier this year and finished third in the Listed Hinkler Quality (1200m) at Doomben. “He’s a very good horse and he’ll have a trial and we plan to run him first-up in the Concorde on Karaka Million night,” Richards said. - NZME

Top honours await mare

Kimberly Butt proudly wears the silver fern.

Sensible Princess is destined to make her mark at Group One level. Her entry was delayed when she missed last Saturday’s Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) with a bruised heel, but trainer Fraser Auret believes her time will come. “You can’t take on those horses if you’re not 110 per cent so we put her aside,” he said. “She’s very exciting and we’re happy to wait. She’s come a long way from a Rating 62 to 98 this campaign.” Sensible Princess has won six of her 10 starts and at her most recent appearance she beat Francaletta and Coldplay to claim the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). - NZME

In brief

■ CRICKET

Clean sweep for Black Caps By DaviD Leggat New Zealand completed a 240run thumping of the West Indies in the second test at Seddon Park today. Spinner Mitchell Santner took the last two wickets on consecutive balls shortly before tea on the fourth day, the West Indies being dismissed for 203. The result ensured a clean sweep, winning the series 2-0 after their innings and 67-run win at the Basin Reserve in the first test. The West Indies had started the fourth day at 30 for two, requiring an improbable 444 to win. They lost stand-in captain Kraigg Brathwaite in the sixth over of the day, caught at gully off Trent Boult, giving the left armer his 200th test wicket, just the fifth such bowler to that mark. He is also the sixth New Zealand bowler to 200, after Richard Hadlee, Dan Vettori, Chris Martin, Chris Cairns and current team-mate Tim Southee. Shai Hope was struck on an arm by Neil Wagner and hooked the next ball straight to fine leg.

Sunil Ambris took a blow on his left wrist and after battling on a few minutes, retired hurt on five. A check revealed a broken bone and he is out of the ODI squad. Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich popped a catch to short leg but Roston Chase and Ray Reifer battled solidly to lunch and well into the second session, before they departed in quick order. Chase completed his fifth half century, 64, while Reifer made 29 before falling to a fine low catch by captain Kane Williamson at gully. Wagner finished with three for 42 and there were two wickets apiece for Southee, Boult and Santner. The three-game ODI series starts in Whangarei next Wednesday, before which the tourists’ have a one-day fixture against a New Zealand XI on Saturday. The squad is significantly different from their test group, with the likes of batting heavyweights Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels and Evin Lewis arriving this week. The ODI series continues in Christchurch on December 23 and Boxing Day. - NZME

Afghanistan’s inaugural test cricket match will be against India. The historic match against the world No.1 test nation will take place sometime next year in India. Rahul Johri, chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, wrote on Twitter: “India to play inaugural test against Afghanistan, welcome them to five-day cricket.” - PA

Vaughan berates English Michael Vaughan is aghast at the ‘stupidity’ of England’s late-night drinkers and believes senior players have serious questions to answer. The former Ashes-winning captain was speaking after Ben Duckett was banned for the remainder of the trip. Vaughan is incredulous that, on their first night back after the Ashes squad’s curfew was lifted, 10 of them went to the very same bar which was the scene of Jonny Bairstow’s headbutt greeting for Cameron Bancroft. - AAP

WACA pitch ‘still packs a punch’ By RoB FoRsaith

Tim Paine will be behind the wickets for Australia. will suit us really well this week,” Australia wicketkeeper Paine said. “All Australian players, domestically and internationally, have enjoyed coming to the WACA. “It’s a place that other interna-

tional teams find really uncomfortable, which is a bonus for us. “The nicks tend to carry quite comfortably. “The first 30 or 40 balls can still be really difficult to get yourself

in, but once you do it can be a beautiful place to bat.” Western Australia coach Langer, who played 105 tests and has loved the WACA since his childhood, suggested the deck produced for the third test would do England no favours. “Even though we say it’s not as quick as it has been, it’s quicker than most pitches in the world,” Langer said. “We probably take it for granted a little bit, but the extra bounce is usually what brings opposition teams unstuck. “It hasn’t been as fast as we’ve talked about for probably 20 years to be honest, but there’s the bounce. “Traditionally, Australia are very hard to beat here.” England’s sole test win at the WACA came in 1978, when Australia was decimated by the breakaway World Series Cricket. - AAP

Cook thinking retirement, says Johnson Mitchell Johnson senses Alastair Cook is “thinking about retirement” and that a deflated and distracted England are ripe to be rolled at the WACA. Johnson, England’s chief tormentor with the ball four years ago when he led Australia to a 5-0 Ashes victory, is no longer intimi-

dating Cook with bouncers. But the left-armer has turned up the heat on former captain Cook and current skipper Joe Root ahead of the third test. “England will struggle mentally,” Johnson said as Australia prepare their push for an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

Martin Guptill’s return to the New Zealand limited-overs side has been put on hold while he continues to recover from injury. The Auckland batsman is missing from the squad of 15 named today for the three ODIs against the West Indies, starting in Whangarei next Wednesday. That opens the door for lefthander George Worker, where he’ll open with blockbusting hitter Colin Munro. - NZME

Afghanis to play India

Right – Ross Taylor’s century set up the Black Caps for a commanding win over the West Indies at Seddon Park yesterday.

The WACA pitch may lack the venom of yesteryear but Tim Paine and Justin Langer agree the additional bounce on offer should help Australia in the third Ashes Test. Australia will seek to claim an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series by winning the contest that starts tomorrow. It will be the final major event at the WACA, with the new stadium on the other side of the Swan River to open soon. The WACA has been a quick’s paradise for most of its existence because of its trademark pace and bounce. However, in recent years there have been no shortage of complaints about flat pitches. “It’s still got more pace and bounce than most of the wickets around the country, so I think it

Guptill out, Worker in

“There’s a lot of distractions, I think they’ll be deflated from the last performance. “You’ve got guys like Alastair Cook, who is struggling. He can’t find form. “I’d say he’s thinking about retirement. “Joe Root is the skipper and

there’s a lot of pressure on him with what’s happening outside the game.” Johnson added Australia’s starstudded attack is yet to click but they have the potential to “really dominate world cricket” and already have England’s squad rattled. - AAP

A story on the back page of yesterday’s Guardian detailing the exploits of the Aorangi golf teams on the weekend incorrectly stated that the women’s side had failed to win a match. They in fact did win their final match of the tournament against Southland 4-1 to see them lift one place above the bottom spot on the overall ladder. The Guardian apologises for this error.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Arguably, half of belonging is acting like you belong. Feeling like you belong is huge, too. But if you do a little of both and still feel like a misfit, just know the others who “belong” feel about the same. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You may get a late start because there are certain things you’ll do to get your head in the game; they take time. The rituals help! Keep reinforcing what works. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ve felt at times that you were fundamentally different from those you were brought up around, so it’s pretty refreshing when today you recognise some nice ways in which you are alike. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Water drops seem to reach for each other. The stream is suddenly the river, and as the river connects with ocean, the river is the ocean. Today your water-sign will echo this tendency to join completely. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re changed by every circumstance, and that’s good. It means you’re open to letting life in. You’re listening and learning. You have to protect yourself at times by making yourself hard, but not now. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Often one broken bulb renders the whole line of holiday lights useless. Let the metaphor remind us to check on one another so we can all be bright together. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Choose a memento representing the mundane aspects of your life. A picture would be enough, but it’s not the same as something you can hold in your hand. Years from now, you’ll remember. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It doesn’t feel true, but there really is a guidance system in you that never shuts down. In those directionless moments you think that your soul lacks a GPS, but it’s been in your pocket the whole time. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it keeps humans evolving. You’ll prove your superior intellect by listening to many sides of a story before forming an opinion, if it even comes to that. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): There’s something you want to know, and it will be revealed to you indirectly – through small talk, intonation and body language. So there’s really no need for probing questions, deep discussions or heated arguments. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Simplification is part of the brain’s job. It’s why the first time you travel somewhere the journey seems longer and more detailed; then later trips are short and blurry. It’s also why you should go a different route today. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Snap decisions will be necessary -- mostly in matters of taste and style. Your decisiveness in this regard will make a project hum along at a pace that everyone can appreciate.

Stoke players get rev-up Stoke manager Mark Hughes has urged his players to be fuelled by the fan fury they experienced at a train station following Saturday’s thrashing by Tottenham. Hughes’ squad were greeted by an angry mob of Potters supporters when they arrived back in the city following the 5-1 loss to Spurs at Wembley, with the defeat leaving them three points above the relegation zone. Fans who had shared the journey back with the players to Stoke vented their frustration on the station’s platform, chanting “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” at Hughes’ players.

Ashburton’s outdoor bowlers have nothing to complain about when it comes to the recent sunny weather that has

been hitting the district, with the bowlers once again out in force at many venues over the weekend. The foursome of A. Mackenzie, N. Mackenzie, D. Kinvig

and L. Spargo (5 wins, 1 draw, 35 ends, 77 points) won the Ashburton NBS Pairs and Fours tournament which was held at the Ashburton Bowling Club on Saturday.

It is a busy week ahead as well, with several trophies on the line over the weekend, as well as the second week of Bowls Canterbury interclub competition.

Former Canterbury NRL chief executive Raelene Castle is poised to take over as Rugby Australia’s new boss and make another piece of sports administration history. New Zealander Castle was announced as the successor to incumbent chief executive Bill Pulver yesterday in Sydney. Castle becomes the first female boss of any of the national governing bodies of the four major football codes in Australia. Earlier she headed up Netball New Zealand.

Joshua team close to deal British boxer Anthony Joshua is set to agree to a deal with Joseph Parker after his promoter Eddie Hearn revealed he would “overpay” the New Zealander to secure the unification fight. Parker’s promotional team recently suggested that Joshua was “refusing to compromise” after the WBO champion revealed his asking price of 35 per cent. Joshua was reluctant to meet Parker’s asking price and slammed his “negotiation tactics” claiming the Kiwi fighter was trying to “demonise” his reputation in order to secure a

heavyweight unification bout. However, Hearn now seems willing to concede to some terms in order to get the fight done. “We’re close,” Hearn said. “We’re at a stage now where we’re having to compromise on certain points that we don’t really want to, but ultimately we’re going to have to because if you want to fight Anthony Joshua, these guys – they want to be overpaid.” “He is the golden ticket fight, the ‘Willy Wonka’ golden ticket fight that everybody wants and

Venus granted a Classic wildcard P15

unfortunately for him, it’s going to mean sometimes taking a deal that isn’t right. “My job is to represent Anthony Joshua and to deliver the deals that are right. “We’re not just going to roll over and let them tickle our belly and give everything away, but we ultimately understand that we’re going to have to overpay Joseph Parker to get that unification fight,” Hearn said. “It is the right fight for everybody and I think we’ll get it made. But we’ll see over the next week or so.”

Hearn said he wanted the fight details to be sorted out by Christmas, confirming Cardiff’s 78,000 seater Principality Stadium would be the most likely venue. Hearn said he and David Higgins had some quirky venues on the discussion table but both acknowledged the need for a large crowd with Cardiff’s retractable roof providing the best option. “Like I said, really by the end of 2017, we must be in a position that fight is done and we’re ready to move forward,” said Hearn. - NZME

Fenech defends Horn Jeff Fenech reckons there’s an easy way for Gary Corcoran to take advantage if the bullish Brit really thinks Jeff Horn is a serial headbutter. Hit him. “Every time he puts his head in, hit him with an uppercut, finish with a hook to put his head back up,” Fenech said. The former three-division world champion believes Corcoran’s camp is playing a mind game with Horn’s corner by airing allegations of foul play at their fiery pre-fight press conference in Brisbane.
