Summer singing school now in session By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students. The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday. It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow. “We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow. Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

while more than half of this year’s junior group are newcomers. The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes members of NAZDA and first-year university students. This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said. And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on Sunday. They are currently undergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards. As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property. The public notification is part

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future. It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month. The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work. Wong anticipates there will be

already assessed. Then we’ll do another desk top review and pick up the ones we may have missed and we’ll work with them,” he said. Buildings that have not been assessed will be given the lowest rating until an assessment is done, Wong said. There had been a proposal to change the rules so the cut-off date for engineering assessment would have moved forward to cover all buildings built before 2004 and that would have seen hundreds of buildings around

and that dramatically reduced the number of buildings coming into the net locally. If a building is required to have a placard displayed it will contain information on the percentage it complies with building standards and the year with which it will need to be strengthened to come up to code, Wong said. Older buildings that have been assessed and found to be up to strength or that have already been strengthened will not need to display placards. Details on the placard-bearing

From P1 Near Methven, Lucy Raisbeck’s free range egg stall was also burgled on Sunday night. While taking out the bins yesterday morning, she said she noticed that the security camera had been taken and the padlock had been cut off from her honesty box. All money had been cleared from the box before the theft, but Raisbeck said she was still gutted to discover the break-in, which she presumes is the work of people “who don’t care about other people”. Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven. Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural rest resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River. Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week. “Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said. “They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.” They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven. “It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said. Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays. The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park. Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut. The 26-year-old is walking the South Island section, south to north, and was in Methven at the weekend. He said he ended up

fered a Hikers’ Special made it all the more attractive. “My feet were pretty banged up, so I decided to hang out for just one more day,” Beckett said. He flew into Auckland in midDecember, and had his cellphone stolen in his first two days. He flew to Queenstown and shuttled to the southern end of Te Araroa at Bluff, and walked 555 kilometres north to Twizel over the next fortnight, staying in high country

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail. Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads. Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scen-

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said. He was not worried about being without a cellphone. “If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said. He was confident enough from previous trail walking in Chile and America not to worry about an emergency locator beacon.

Ashburton may not get extra police By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

The Government is not promising Mid Canterbury any new police officers under a scheme which will boost national numbers by 1800 over three years. According to Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, Police Minister Stuart Nash has informed other regions that their police numbers will increase to the numbers he demands. However, when Nash was approached by Falloon on the matter, Falloon said he was unable to give Mid Canterbury the same guarantee, instead saying it was a matter for the Police Commissioner. But Falloon said that’s a “very different” message to what areas like the Hawkes Bay are receiving. “It’s a disappointing reflection of what Labour will say to get elected, and what they’ll do once in government,” Falloon said. Why will [Nash] happily confirm that Napier will see an increase in police, but won’t do the same for us?” Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said he too was not content with the changes, however, other districts were more of a priority, and Ashburton was “well down the list”. “Mid Canterbury is capped at a number and that’s what we have,” he said. “There is a real opportunity

in this town to make a difference if well resourced ... but the only staff this district will be getting is to replace approved positions.” While a few changes are on the

Third supply on boil water notice Three water supplies in the Ashburton District are now under precautionary boil water notices. The Ashburton District Council issued warnings on the Methven water supply yesterday afternoon after heavy rainfall caused high turbidity in the supply. This means residents should boil their drinking water and water used in food preparation for at least three minutes before it is consumed. Monitoring equipment at the Methven treatment plant has de-

tected the high turbidity – otherwise described as cloudiness – in the supply and while the treatment plant equipment is operating normally it is less effective during periods of high turbidity. Last weekend the council also issued a precautionary boil water notice for both the Mt Somers and Montalto schemes. All three precautionary boil water notices will remain in place until further advised by the council.

cards for the police station, including Banfield himself handing over the reins to a new senior sergeant this year, local police were already at their “approval numbers”.

Falloon said he will be continuing to advocate for Mid Canterbury’s fair share of police. “I will absolutely be pushing the Police Minister for more commit-

ment,” he said. “They’ve come up with a pretty ambitious target of 1800 and I would hope to see many of those in Mid Canterbury.”

Attitudes ‘must change’ More has to be done to change attitudes towards children with disabilities and address bullying in schools, the Human Rights Commission says. In Auckland, the Ministry of Education has agreed to override zoning rules to help an autistic pupil move schools because of “almost daily” bullying at his previous school. Disability Rights Commissioner Paula Tesoriero says everyone should be asking why disabled children are being bullied at higher rates than others. “In this specific case, one child suggested to another that they

David Rutherford kill themselves – it doesn’t get more serious than this,” she said. “The fact this child has moved schools provides an immediate response to the situation, but what is needed is a change in attitudes towards disabled kids in

our schools.” Chief Human Rights Commissioner David Rutherford, who wants a proven bullying prevention programme to be introduced in more schools, said the statistics around bullying had to improve. “The ongoing failure to address a problem that New Zealand children have identified as one of their greatest concerns is a national disgrace,” he said. The boy’s mother, Tracey Hill, said that her son, now 12, was “subjected to almost daily bullying” at his intermediate school last year. – NZN

Education is key in domestic violence By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@atheguardian.co.nz

One of the hardest things for any victim of domestic violence is accepting that they are not to blame for the abusive situation in which they are living, says Mid South Canterbury Women’s Refuge manager Dawn Rangi-Smith. But getting those women and children who are caught up in the domestic violence net to accept that, is often the stumbling block that stops them taking back control over their lives. She sees education as the key that will give them the tools they need to reshape their lives. Refuge staff are in Ashburton most days of the week. They work with women referred to their service by police, social workers and sometimes through a woman seeking help herself. Next month the refuge will start its Ashburton-based education programmes for the year. “For the women these programmes are about helping them to come to grips with the situation they’re in, with what’s been happening in their lives, helping them understand what family violence actually is and its effect on women and children. “We help the women understand how they got into their current situation and to accept

that it is not their fault they’re in that situation,” she said. It usually took time for women to accept they were not to blame and that often occurred after they had asked for help and had worked through an education programme, RangiSmith said. “Often the years have gone by, they’ve pushed it to the back of their minds and then they realise this doesn’t need to be their life. “Deep down a woman will know what’s happening is not right, but they may not know how to get out.” The education programme and one-on-one counselling were the tools that helped victims of family violence to have the strength to change their lives, she said. The children’s programme, often running at the same time, focused on feelings, on helping children and teenagers to come to grips with the things that were happening in their lives. “The key to our success is getting these education programmes out there so more women can be helped to understand what is happening is not their fault,” she said. More information on the education programmes for women and children can be obtained by contacting Mid South Canterbury Women’s Refuge on 03 684-8280.

Drive to end rural women’s isolation By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

For many immigrant women living in rural Mid Canterbury, the lack of a driver’s licence means they become isolated from their community, says Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford. Thanks to an initiative driven by his organisation and the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, those women are about to be offered a helping hand to pass driving tests that will ensure they are able to lead independent lives. Ex-dairy farmer Wendy Hewitt has taken up the newly-created role of co-ordinator of the licence scheme and she’s keen to welcome the first group of women who will work towards achieving learner driver status. The group will then begin studying towards achieving their restricted licence. When Clifford attended rural

meetings, he said the one common theme was the issue of rural isolation, particularly for women who were unable to drive. That meant they were totally dependent on others for every off-farm activity, even attending events at their children’s school, he said. “Once they get their restricted they can drive with their kids, then they can join in and become a part of their community and they then have a much greater opportunity to integrate into that community.” The project is funded from a number of sources and will run for three years initially. It will see 12 women sign on for the learners’ programme. Once they achieve this they will study towards their restricted licence and a new group of learners will sign on. “We know it won’t be easy for all

of these women and language will be a key that will affect their ability to get their licence, that and there could be cultural issues and issues around computer skills,” he said. Several years ago a similar project had been held but it ran out of funds before participants were able to gain a restricted licence. With a three-year contract this time round, participants were assured of being able to complete the licence journey, Clifford said. “We’ve allowed some extra time with this because there are so many unknowns, particularly around language barriers.” He anticipates the courses will be run in several locations to make it easier for the women to attend. The details of the project are still being worked through, but the team hopes to begin recruiting students in March.

$2000 cash bonus for cancer support group By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

At last year’s Christmas Eve races, the Ashburton Trotting Club asked for visitors to lend a little generosity to a cause which affects everyone in some way, shape or form. Hundreds answered that call, and it’s thanks to them that the Ashburton Cancer Support Group just became better off to the tune of $2000. Cancer Support Group community liason officer Annie Bonifant said the group were very thankful for the funds, which will be distributed to local cancer patients. “We’ll be giving them petrol vouchers and grocery vouchers and meals and in winter, for those things like power bills which become really important,” she said. Adequate money to spend at the supermarket was important for patients with changing dietary needs, she said, while funds for transport were helpful for the many patients who have to travel to receive treatment. It was the first time the trotting club has organised a Cancer Support Group fundraising drive, and the money was collected at gates, via donation boxes and from a sausage sizzle. Ashburton Trotting Club’s Bruce Taylor said the fundraising drive was a good success and that the club were indebted to the Pakeke Lions who assisted on the day. Further donations came straight from the club who selected a runner in each race to wear a yellow helmet cover with $100 added to the donation for each yellow hat

that was victorious. Four horses were successful during the day – adding $400 to the kitty.

■ EXAMS

NCEA results out next week By Katie todd

Katie.t@theguardian.co.nz

It’s a time dreaded by some, eagerly anticipated by others. Next week, 800-odd Mid Canterbury senior students will be logging on to the NZQA website for the outcome of their 2017 NCEA

exam efforts. Starting from Tuesday, NCEA will be releasing the results of all level one, two and three exams sat throughout November, and awarding examinees grades from not achieved to excellence. Ashburton College Principal Ross Preece said there will be two

things of interest when the results come out. Firstly, he said, “did they get the results they worked for? If not what should they do differently next year?” And the other biggie – the nationwide outcome of the “nightmare” level one maths exam.

“NCEA is not supposed to be altered, but they will have to do so because the paper proved to be too difficult,” he said. Scholarship exam results will be released on February 8, and students have until February 16 to apply for reconsideration or review

of exams that they feel have been incorrectly assessed. The exam result release follows a government announcement last month that NCEA is set to receive a complete overhaul in 2018, with a particular focus on reducing “overassessment”.

Emotional post shared after fatal A Waikato police officer has shared an emotional post on social media about the effects of witnessing the aftermath of a fatal crash. The police officer, who has remained anonymous, says they are struggling to sleep after delivering the devastating news to a father that his daughter had died in a car crash on Tuesday. The crash, near Matamata, saw a woman lose her life while her husband and children were taken to hospital after surviving the wreck. The woman’s father and mother had been travelling in a vehicle in front of them and heard the crash. “I’ve been in the police for nearly 20 years now. In that time I have attended lots of accidents, with a fair few being fatalities,” the officer said in the post, which was shared on the Waikato Police Facebook page on Thursday. “It was just another and I emotionally went into that space that I go to when I attend. I don’t do tears and I don’t do emotion. I switch off and go into professional mode. Arrive, assess the scene, quickly speak to witnesses, check to see who is

injured, what resources are needed, more witnesses, preserve evidence and so on. “The victim’s body was still in the car upside down in the ditch, the injured were now in the two ambulances that attended and we were waiting for the air ambulance helicopters to arrive.” The officer said they try to keep emotion at bay, but found it hard when the woman’s father asked if his daughter had died. “I don’t do tears and I don’t do emotion ... up until that point. I think I mumbled ‘yes she is’,” the officer said. “To be confronted by a dad who has lost his daughter, a husband who has lost his wife, and two kiddies who have lost their mum, it just brought the tragedy home.” The police officer wasn’t sure what would be achieved by sharing the post, but wanted to let people know that “the emergency services have to deal with this sort of thing regularly”. “Each of us are affected and deal with what we see in our own way.” The officer wrote the post just after 3am, stating that trying to sleep was an issue after dealing with a tragic fatality. – NZN

M. bovis ... what is it and The Mid Canterbury farming community was rocked earlier this week with the announcement by the Ministry for Primary Industries that mycoplasma bovis had been confirmed as being on a farm near Ashburton. So what is the cattle disease, what are its risks and costs, can we get rid of it and what is the ministry doing to achieve that? Colin Williscroft reports.

Until we have a clearer picture, we won’t be culling further herds

P

rior to mycoplasma bovis being discovered on a dairy farm near Glenavy in July last year, New Zealand was one of a handful of countries worldwide, another being Norway, where the disease was not present. Very few people here, including most farmers, knew anything about it, despite it being common in most cattle-producing countries around the world, occurring throughout Australia, North America and Europe. M. bovis causes illness in cattle including mastitis, abortion, pneumonia and arthritis. It’s important to realise that the disease does not affect people – it is not a food safety risk. DairyNZ biosecurity readiness and response manager Chris Morley told public meetings in Methven and Ashburton on Thursday that the disease is known as a “silent spreader” – cows can be infected but not fall ill. That’s one of the things that makes it difficult to detect – it hides, often not presenting itself until cows come under some sort of pressure and can surface months later. Because of that cows carrying the disease often appear healthy, so in a country like New Zealand where stock movement between farms is common, cows can be moved around with no-one being any the wiser as to them carrying the disease until it’s too late. If you want a human analogy think herpes. It might be in your system but most of the time you’d never know. However, a bit of fatigue or other health problems and everything changes. A concern, but some perspective As mentioned, the disease is common internationally. Most other countries have it in their normal cattle supply and they successfully manage it. M. bovis is not listed with the OIE (the world animal health organisation) and, according to MPI, the disease does not present a trade risk for New Zealand animal products. It will not affect prices paid for New Zealand export beef or prices on Global Dairy Trade. That’s not to take away from the devastation that will be felt by those whose herds have tested positive. Some of those people will have had their herds culled, while those who haven’t still have that prospect hanging over them. On top of that, because no-one in this country wants the disease on their farm, they face being ostracised by those around them. So why the worry? Despite it not affecting humans, M. bovis poses significant animal welfare risks, which come at a cost to both the cows themselves and the farmers who work them. If we’re looking at purely financial implications we’re talking higher vet bills to treat animal health problems and lower production due to either sick animals

or abortion. Either way, not things dairy farmers want to consider. Because of that, and the fact the disease has not been present before, no-one wants a bar of it. Another concern is that no-one is sure how the disease arrived in New Zealand in the first place. MPI response incident controller David Yard says the ministry is looking into possible pathways, including imported embryos, semen, medicines, animals, feed or used farm equipment, but the reality is they may never know the answer. The local situation The Ashburton property that tested positive for M. bovis was not the one initially being investigated. That property is still providing inconclusive test results, despite MPI saying it is highly likely it will end up with a positive result.

The confirmed property was identified through a milk surveillance programme, not through tracing suspected properties connected with the van Leeuwan farms where M. bovis was first discovered in New Zealand. MPI’s Justin Mercer told the Mid Canterbury meetings that there was no link identified between the local property and those already identified as infected, but much of the investigation was still to be completed, with the ministry trying to trace movements between the local infected property and about 30 other farms. What Mercer could assure farmers was “until we have a clearer picture, we won’t be culling further herds”, referring to the herds culled early in the outbreak, which led to the destruction of 4800 cattle. Not just dairy

Much of the focus right now over M. bovis has been on the dairy industry but there are also implications for beef farmers. Beef + Lamb New Zealand is working closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) on its response to M. bovis and chief executive Sam McIvor is encouraging all beef farmers and rural contractors to help protect their farms and businesses by following the guidance available on the MPI website, keeping an eye out for unusual symptoms in animals and reporting them to their vet, and ensuring all farm records and NAIT records for stock bought, sold or moved are accurate and complete. MPI has also been working with staff at Anzco’s Mid Canterbury feedlot over testing procedures. Current containment controls All infected farms and those

MPI’s Justin Mercier says at this stage no link has been identified between the property near Ashburton where M. bovis has been found and other farms with the cattle disease.

DairyNZ biosecurity readiness and response manager Chris Morley says mycoplasma bovis is extremely difficult to detect.

with suspect results are in a “quarantine lockdown” through restricted place notices, Mercer said. That means no animal or risk goods on or off, while any movement of cattle requires a permit from MPI and all vehicles have to follow a cleaning and disinfection process when they leave. He said staff from AsureQuality (MPI’s managing partner for biosecurity) are ensuring that cleaning, disinfecting and permit requirements are being complied with. What is MPI testing for? MPI veterinary incursion investigator Kelly Buckle says given that M. bovis can hide in infected cows, showing up months later, the ministry is testing for both the actual bacteria and the cows’ immune system response to that bacteria, with tests targeting up to

130 cows in a herd. She says that before the ministry can make decisions about how to deal with the disease, it needs to find out how far it has spread, so it is taking a multi-layered approach to its testing programme. This includes finding out as much as it can about infected farms, bordering farms, stock movement and both district and nationwide bulk and discard milk. MPI is also working with milk companies on a nationwide surveillance programme that involves monitoring herds by testing milk from mastitis-affected, lame or otherwise sick cows. The programme begins in Mid Canterbury next week. On-farm biosecurity Morley says it’s time farmers stepped up to the plate in this area. “Don’t rely on others to protect

your patch, protect it yourself – we all have a role to play,” he told those at the Mid Canterbury meetings, referring them to advice on the MPI and DairyNZ websites. “Record all animal movements on and off your farm,” he said, even if that task was one viewed as an unwanted chore in the past. It’s been acknowledged that compliance with the National Animal Identification and Tracing Scheme (NAIT) is an area where farmers are letting themselves down and Agriculture and Biosecurity Minister Damien O’Connor says he’s told officials to take a tougher approach with farmers and all other users who do not meet their obligations under the scheme. He says most animal movements to sale yards and meat processors are recorded within the required 48 hours after they are completed, however a large

percentage of farm-to-farm movements are not recorded. Compensation MPI has a compensation plan in place for those affected by restricted place notices and notices of direction but Yard says anyone thinking of going down that path needs to realise they will have to prove they will be out of pocket. He says compensation is available for damage or destruction of property and money lost due to restrictions imposed under the Biosecurity Act on the movement or disposal of goods. “Farmers will be compensated but under the (Biosecurity) Act they will have to prove they will end up no better or worse off, so it’s not a licence to pursue a wishlist.” It’s also a lengthy process that will require accurate records, he said.

arm service providers, such as transport companies, are stuck between a rock and a hard place over the biosecurity concerns brought about by mycoplasma bovis. MPI’s Justin Mercier says vehicles pose only a negligible security risk and it is safe for cattle to be transported from infected farms. He said there is a strict cleaning and disinfection protocol to be followed and MPI has contractors to ensure the rules are being followed. Mercier does have some advice for farm service providers. “Farms should be using routine on-farm biosecurity practices to minimise risk to their animals. Service providers can help minimise risk by complying with the farm’s cleaning and disinfection requirements.” He says it’s important that service providers don’t arrive on-farm unannounced. “Let the farmer know you plan to visit their farm and ask their requirements,” he says, adding that it’s important they work with farmers over biosecurity on-farm. “Clean and disinfect footwear, protective clothing and equipment before coming on-farm. “Be proactive, assure farmers of your hygiene practices.” Mercier acknowledges that extra cleaning of equipment such as trucks will add time and financial costs that had not been considered necessary in the past. However, it was for everyone’s benefit that farmers and providers work together to make sure there are no shortcuts taken in this area.

Michael Hill Int lifts revenue

Overseas Investment Office halts UDC sale ANZ Bank New Zealand said an agreement to sell UDC Finance to Chinese conglomerate HNA Group for $660 million has terminated after the application was declined by the Overseas Investment Office in December. “The agreement to sell UDC Finance to HNA Group will not proceed as the agreement with HNA has now been terminated in accordance with the contracted timeframe,” ANZ said in a release. “Following the termination of the agreement with HNA, we’ll continue to assess our strategic options regarding the future of UDC, although there is no immediate requirement to do anything,” ANZ group executive and

New Zealand chief executive David Hisco said. The Overseas Investment Office said it had declined the application because it did not determine who the relevant overseas person was from the information provided about ownership and control interests. Hisco said UDC continues to be a very profitable business with a strong capital position. “Its focus remains on its core business of financing vehicles and equipment for people and companies across New Zealand,” Hisco said. The UDC acquisition would have been the first New Zealand deal for Hainan, China-based

HNA, which evolved from a regional airline to a global conglomerate with more than US$90 billion of assets. However, the company has been coming under increased scrutiny after a debt-fuelled US$40 billion global acquisition spree, and Standard & Poor’s warned late last year it would probably downgrade UDC’s credit rating if the deal was approved due to HNA’s “significant debt maturities over the next several years” which had led to “meaningfully higher” funding costs. by Friday in Europe. If the talks broke down, the uncertainty around the need for a new election would weigh on the euro and the kiwi while the greenback would benefit. The local currency was little changed at 60.18 euro cents from 60.14 cents Thursday. bond-buying scheme this week, which also weighed on the greenback. The kiwi has benefited from the weaker dollar and from the more upbeat sentiment around global growth, Martin Rudings, senior dealer foreign exchange at OMF in Wellington said. He noted trading is cautious ahead of the US consumer price index data later in the global trading day. “The market is a bit nervous to push it on too much further ahead of CPI in the States,” he said. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch forecast the core CPI, which strips out the volatile food and energy categories, will show a monthly gain of 0.2 per cent and an annual rise of 1.7 per cent. Rudings said coalition talks in Germany are also on investors’ radar. According to Reuters, negotiators vowed to reach a decision

The New Zealand dollar is heading for a 1.2 per cent weekly gain, pushing higher against a slumping greenback after minutes from the European Central Bank’s December meeting boosted investor expectations it is planning to end its massive stimulus programme. The kiwi traded at 72.54 US cents as at 5pm yesterday from 72.48 US cents at 8am yesterday and up from 71.88 cents Thursday. It was at 71.67 US cents last Friday in New York. The trade-weighted index advanced to 75.20 from 74.78 Thursday. The ECB minutes showed officials considered a move “early in the coming year” to further reduce stimulus, assuming economic growth remains strong, which weighed on the US dollar overnight and during Asian trading. The minutes came on the heels of the Bank of Japan trimming its

OUR VIEW

It’s the plan you can’t afford to ignore Sue Newman

SENIOR REPORTER

N

ext week is a big week on the Ashburton District Council’s calendar. Most weeks are big when you’re running a multi-million business, but they don’t get much more bigger than planning how you’ll spend rates money over the next decade. In reality, it’s just one of many weeks where the plan will be council’s number one focus. It’s been the top item in staff diaries for many weeks and councillors will have done plenty of background reading to ensure they’re up to speed with what’s in the current plan, what’s been done, what has not and why. The LTP is the council’s spending bible. If it’s not in the plan, it’s not budgeted and, unless the case is exceptional, it’s unlikely to be done. Projects big and small will be lined up and the case made for the inclusion but, at the end of the day, there’s only so much money in the bucket and that never matches the council or community wish list. The long term plan is revised every three years. It’s heavy on detail for the first three years with the other seven given a broad brush. As there is every three years a plan review, there are big ticket items that will be automatically included. This time round the new civic centre and library are likely to make it onto the short term radar after languishing in the wings for years. There is likely to be hot debate over extra spending on the EA Networks Centre as there’s plenty of community pressure for this to be extended and, inevitably, there’s always a big push for more money to be spent on roads. Engaging the community in the LTP process, however, is always one of the greatest challenges. To the average resident the plan is probably a bit of a yawn. It shouldn’t be. It’s our plan. When it reaches draft form it becomes public property and that’s our chance to have a say. If we don’t take an interest then we have no right to complain when rates money goes where we don’t want it to go.

YOUR VIEWS ON FACEBOOK Question of the day: Following on from the news from National’s Falloon yesterday regarding a four-lane highway – do we actually need that kind of roading infrastructure in the district? Continued….. Shaun Of course it needs to happen. All that new roading around ChCh then bottle neck all the way home. 4 lanes from north of ChCh all the way to Dunners. Around all the towns. Boomfa Dennis S Second bridge and four lanes through town first, continue down West Street then onto new bridge over to Melcombe Street! Judy Put a set of lights in Tinwald before you worry about more roadways, they can hardly cross two lanes, let alone four. Irene Rakaia and Ashburton bridges might be a bit of a squeeze with four lanes.lol Pam Would much rather see something done bout another bridge first Barrie They may as well start it now because by the time they talk about it,plan it,get funds sorted for it then get it built it will be very much needed.

Digby As a priority it is not necessarily in the top 10 upgrades nationally but for locals it makes sense Michael If you have a four lane highway i think we need a second bridge and four lanes through Ashvagas but and that may fix our problems through town. And also a four lane highway to timaru aswell Janet Yes we should have 4 lanes, would be a much safer and more efficient trip to Chch, West street should have 4 lanes also, it’s part of the main highway and becoming so much busier Brian Detour round the whole of Ashburton and tinwald would get rid of major choke point namely the bridge and west street

YOUR VIEW Four-lane highway Andrew Falloon knows that launching a petition to save National’s pre-election carrot of having a four-lane highway between Rolleston and Ashburton is a shoo-in to get people to agree with him. Who wouldn’t love to be able to travel from Christchurch to Ashburton on a nice new motorway? But when the logistics of this is considered surely he must know it’s a bit of a joke. The completed Stage 1 motorway from Addington to Hornby, and the uncompleted Stage 2, have a total cost of $335 million and cover a distance of 15 kilometres. Rolleston to Ashburton is over four times that and includes the Rakaia bridge, the longest bridge in New Zealand. This will probably happen at some stage, but I doubt it will be feasible for a good few years yet. Some traffic lights at Tinwald would be much more realistic. Simon Blissett

ast week I gave you my version of the silly season and the trivia it involves. For all of us it is a period away from the realities of life by which, for most of the rest of the year, we are beset. This week, I am obliged to return to those realities, as 2017 segues seamlessly into 2018. No apologies; they have to be faced. For a start, we find in the White House a madman, a bigot and a bully. As the Press editorial describes him, he is a “charlatan, whose demagoguery ... brought him victory only because of the warped American voting system”. In fact, Clinton received three million more votes than Donald Trump but lost because of the strange statistical permutations of the Electoral College. Whatever one may have thought of Crooked Hillary, as Trump relentlessly and unforgivably called her, in terms of the system of democracy under which the United States supposedly functions, Hillary was the winner, Donald a comfortable loser – and not only statistically. Since that gruesome day in November 2016 when, in the face of the facts and a travesty of democracy, Trump was declared the winner, the world standing of the United States of America has plunged to a point where, nowadays, it is more often regarded as a rogue rather than a real state, its leader – also known as The Leader of the Free World (God help us) – a delusional megalomaniac with ambitions to become a world dictator. Donald Trump is more interested in making America white again than great. And, in a brief look-back at the silly season, the tentacles of which I am still trying to shake off, we now hear – on the back of her brilliant speech at the Golden Globes awards night – of Oprah Winfrey being touted as a presidential candidate opponent for Trump in 2020. (Needless to say, Trump is confident of beating her). However, should Winfrey be selected the present American election procedure might as well be jettisoned in favour of a political version of America’s Got Talent – probably chaired by ex President Trump. And why not? Post Oprah there would be no shortage of celebrity candidates who would enjoy a stint in the White House. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep come instantly to mind.

EYE ON POLITICS

No doubt there are others but they would still have to be squeaky clean and uncontaminated by the stain of sexual harassment. Which, at once, reduces the field by a sizeable number. All that, though, is for a fantasy future which is unlikely to come to pass. But then, who anticipated the arrival in the White House of Donald Trump, a nightmare dismissed as such by all except the uber-wise political scientists. We know, only too well, stranger things can happen at sea! But back to the future So that is the first reality faced by this blossoming year. Like it or not, the happenings in the US affect us all. The fact that our current Leader of the Free World is also spoiling for a fight, preferably with North Korea but not exclusively so if he can find another suitable target, and, in the process, boasting he has a bigger button than anyone else, should be putting the heebie jeebies into us. As well, in a modest autobiographical aside, DT is now calling himself a “stable genius”. So, how long will it be before there are in his entourage, or motorcade, several men in white coats as well as the swat teams and security operatives all armed to their steel teeth? (and, anyway, I would call him merely an “unstable genius”, at best!) Also overseas, another reality that cannot be avoided is Brexit, and the chaos it has caused, and will continue so to do, until someone with the acumen of a Dalek and the wisdom of Solomon – not a frequently-found combination, one has to admit – can come up with a solution to suit all European Union countries. “Soft”, “hard” or merely “flexible”, a way out for Britain has to be found. PM, on borrowed time, Teresa May, flounders, while across the channel, Europe flourishes. I see May is in the throes of taking the knife – though, in her case, some wag is calling it a stiletto – to the lower echelons of her cabinet in a (probably vain) attempt to get agreement

Going it alone may sound like a good rallying cry but it is not one guaranteed to being long-term success. To those examples of doubt and uncertainty can be added many others, though in an article of these limited dimensions, I can’t be expected to cover them all. The increasing involvement of Russia and its remorseless drive for world domination has to be one such. Anyone in little old Aotearoa, New Zealand who thinks, while the above may possibly be an interesting, even fine, piece of writing but one involving only foreign countries, none of them relevant to what may be happening in Invercargill, Waitoki or even Wellington, should quickly think again. We live these days – according to those who should know and are sure they do – in a global village, where all roads meet, cross and unravel. disagreement and dissent with a maverick deputy leader unlikely to be much help to an inexperienced prime minister, who had greatness thrust upon her when Labour had tried everyone and everything else. The country suffers from increasing wastage on a massive scale despite the heroic efforts of those trying to reduce it, while on the roads, seemingly, no one listens to the wise words of the police following yet another multi-carnage crash. Many of those roads are nominated as the cause of the crash and other excuses for it are found but, in reality, we know now, and have for many years, that we are the first cause. Unless, and until drivers of all ages and genders take notice of those wise words and determine to act on them, the carnage will continue, Julie-Anne Genter notwithstanding. So there really isn’t much that is silly ahead of us in 2018. Only the most flamboyant of clairvoyants could give us an idea of what to expect and, even, then, there would be room for uncertainty. Assange given citizenship Ecuador has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after more than five years of living in asylum at the nation’s embassy in London. Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said officials accepted Assange’s request for naturalisation in December, and they continue to look for a long-term resolution to a situation that has vexed officials since 2012. “What naturalisation does is provide the asylum seeker another layer of protection,” Espinosa said. Ecuador gave Assange asylum after he sought refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for investigation of sexrelated claims. Sweden dropped the case, but Assange has remained in the embassy because he is still subject to arrest in Britain for jumping bail. He also fears a possible US extradition request based on his leaking of classified State Department documents. The Australian-born Assange

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London. PHOTO AP posted a photograph of himself wearing a yellow Ecuadorean national soccer team jersey on Instagram and his name now appears in the Andean country’s national registry. The new citizenship status, however, appears to change little for Assange in

the immediate future. He would still need to alert British authorities of any movement outside the embassy. Espinosa said Ecuador is trying to make Assange a member of its diplomatic team, which would grant him additional rights under the Vienna Con-

vention on Diplomatic Relations, including special legal immunity and safe passage. Britain’s Foreign Office said earlier on Thursday it has rejected Ecuador’s request to grant him diplomatic status in the UK. Though protected by Ecuador, the relationship between Assange and the nation’s leaders has at times been dicey. Ecuador has repeatedly urged Assange not to interfere in the affairs of other countries following his frequent online comments on international issues. He was also a point of contention in Ecuador’s 2017 presidential election. Conservative candidate Guillermo Lasso pledged to evict the Australian within 30 days of taking office, while current President Lenin Moreno said he would allow him to stay. Assange later taunted after Lasso’s loss that he would “cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days”. Moreno issued a warning reminding Assange not to meddle in politics. – AP

The 71-year-old hinted she was coming Down Under in a cryptic emojiladen tweet in December: “OK..... YOU BOYS KNOW WHERE I’LL IN MARCH... #PutSomeShrimpOmTheBar[bie]”. The NSW government announced Cher had been locked into performing at the Mardi Gras Party, when the city marks the annual parade’s 40th anniversary. It will be the first since same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia.

Jewels stolen in Paris Ritz heist recovered Paris authorities recovered all the jewels stolen from the Ritz Hotel in a dramatic heist, but were still searching for two thieves who got away, officials said. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the robbery on Wednesday evening raised questions about security in one of the world’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, the Place Vendome. Its well-guarded buildings include the Justice Ministry, highend boutiques and the 19thcentury Ritz. Workers cleaned up shattered glass Thursday and started to repair damage from the robbery. Otherwise business appeared to be returning to normal at the Ritz, with no significant increase in security. Three perpetrators “entered by the service entrance, smashed the jewellery stands, grabbed jewels that were clear-

ly expensive with the help of axes,” Jean-Michel Huguet of the police union Alliance Police Nationale said. They seized watches from display cases holding wares from Rolex and Piaget, and then targeted the Alexandre Reza jewellery boutique inside the hotel. The suspects inside threw bags of goods out of a window to at least two accomplices outside, according to a police official. The three inside were then blocked when they tried to flee through another door, and quickly arrested, the official said. The accomplices outside fled, one on a motorcycle and another in a car. The motorcyclist dropped a bag with jewels and hatchets when his motorcycle hit a pedestrian during his escape. The pedestrian was slightly injured, said the offi-

cial, who wasn’t authorised to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation. Other jewels were found scattered amid the debris of the shattered display cases during overnight cleanup efforts, the official told The Associated Press. The overall value of the jewels on display was estimated at about 4.5 million euros ($NZ7.14 million). An official close to the investigation said Thursday night that all the stolen jewels have been recovered, after authorities and jewellers carefully examined the contents of the bag and debris and found everything had been accounted for. Another police official said some of the thieves apparently had guns. Two people inside the hotel hid from the thieves and alerted police, the official said.

Patrons at the hotel’s renowned Hemingway Bar described panic as the thieves entered the hushed environment of the Ritz, where rooms start at 1000 euros ($NZ1660) a night. Several high-end Paris jewellery stores have been targets of dramatic robberies in recent years, including Cartier, Harry Winston and Chopard. Kim Kardashian West said she lost millions of dollars’ worth of jewellery when she was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris apartment in October 2016. The Ritz was an especially luxurious target. The hotel has housed such famous names as Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel. It was the last place Princess Diana stayed before her fatal car crash in a Paris tunnel, and hosts elite guests from around the world drawn to the refined neighbourhood. – NZME

Eight quakes strike Iran-Iraq border area A series of eight earthquakes has hit the Iran-Iraq border area and rattled Baghdad, apparent aftershocks of a temblor that struck the mountainous region in November and killed over 530 people. Four people suffered minor injuries in Iran, state television reported. The US Geological Survey says seven of the quakes struck near the Iraqi city of Mandali, 120 kilometres northeast of the Iraqi capital. Mandali is right on

the border between the two nations. The eighth hit near Mehran in western Iran, about 90 kilometres southeast of Mandali along the sparsely populated Zagros Mountains that divide Iran and Iraq. All the earthquakes struck within an hour of each other, beginning at 0659 GMT. Six had a preliminary magnitude of at least 5, while two registered at magnitude 4. Scientists consider earthquakes of magnitude 5 as moderate.

Iranian authorities offered similar figures for the earthquakes on state television. All the information could change as scientists examine the data. Iranian state television said online that people rushed into the streets as the temblors hit. In Baghdad, people felt a quake shake the Iraqi capital, followed by what felt like aftershocks. All the earthquakes struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the USGS. Earthquakes at magnitude 5 can cause con-

siderable damage. The temblors also all were very shallow, which causes more ground shaking and potential damage, particularly in places without strict building codes. In November, a major 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the same region, killing over 530 people and injuring thousands in Iran alone. In Iraq, nine people were killed and 550 were injured, all in the country’s northern Kurdish region, according to the United Nations. – AP

Fast Eddie Clarke dies British hard rock band Motorhead says former guitarist Edward ‘Fast Eddie’ Clarke has died aged 67. Motorhead announced on Facebook that Clarke died in hospital while being treated for pneumonia. Clarke joined Motorhead soon after it was founded in 1975 by former Hawkwind bassist Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister. He was the final survivor of the band’s classic lineup: Lemmy, Clarke and drummer Phil ‘Philthy Animal’ Taylor. Kilmister and Taylor both died in 2015. Clarke’s time in Motorhead produced some of the band’s biggest hits, including the ferocious anthem Ace of Spades.

Life support turned off The life support of Home and Away actress Jessica Falkholt has reportedly been turned off more than a fortnight after a horror crash that claimed the life of her parents and sister. The 29-year-old had been fighting for life in St George Hospital since the fiery Boxing Day collision near Ulladulla, on the NSW south coast. Jessica’s parents Lars and Vivian were laid to rest along with sister Annabelle, 21, on Wednesday. The family was remembered as an inseparable, radiant group. Jessica, who has appeared on Home and Away and other Australian series, was pulled from the wreckage of the family car with her sister on December 26 before it erupted in flames with the bodies of their parents inside.

Trump’s comment ‘racist’ In bluntly vulgar language, President Donald Trump questioned why the US would accept more immigrants from Haiti and “shithole countries” in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal, according to people briefed on the extraordinary Oval Office conversation. Trump’s contemptuous description of an entire continent startled lawmakers in the meeting and immediately revived charges that the president is racist. The White House did not deny his remark but issued a statement saying Trump supports immigration policies that welcome “those who can contribute to our society”. Trump’s comments came as two senators presented details of a bipartisan compromise that would extend protections against deportation for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants – and also strengthen border protections as Trump has insisted. The lawmakers had hoped Trump would back their accord, an agreement among six senators evenly split among Republicans and Democrats, ending a months-long, bitter dispute over protecting the Dreamers. But the White House later rejected it,

Senator Dick Durbin, (left), and Republican Steny Hoyer, (right), listen as President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting on immigration policy. PHOTO AP plunging the issue back into uncertainty just eight days before a deadline that threatens a government shutdown. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No 2 Democrat, explained that as part of that deal, a lottery for visas that has benefited people from Africa and other nations would be ended, the sources said, though there could be another way for them to apply. Durbin said people would be allowed to stay in the US who fled here after

disasters hit their homes in places including El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti. Trump specifically questioned why the US would want to admit more people from Haiti. As for Africa, he asked why more people from “shithole countries” should be allowed into the US, the sources said. The president suggested that instead, the US should allow more entrants from countries like Norway. Trump met this week

with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg. Asked about the remarks, White House spokesman Raj Shah did not deny them. “Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” he said. Trump’s remarks were remarkable even by the standards of a president who has been accused by his foes of racist attitudes and has routinely smashed through public decorum that his modern predecessors have generally embraced. Trump has claimed without evidence that Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president, wasn’t born in the United States, has said Mexican immigrants were “bringing crime” and were “rapists” and said there were “very fine people on both sides” after violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, left one counter-protester dead. The six senators have been meeting for months to find a way to revive protections for young immigrants who arrived in the US as children and are here illegally. – AP

Virus cause of 170 dolphin deaths in Brazil Brazilian scientists say a virus is the main cause for the death of close to 200 guiana dolphins in little more than 40 days on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state. The School of Oceanography of the State University of Rio de Janeiro said in a statement that an outbreak of “cetacean morbillivirus” is responsible for the deaths of more than 130 guiana dolphins in the Bay of Sepetiba since late November. The bay is about 70 kilome-

tres west of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Another 40 dead guiana dolphins were found in a nearby island called Ilha Grande. The virus can damage the immune system of marine mammals. What led to the outbreak and how long it will last are still unknown. Scientists are trying to determine other possible causes for the death of the dolphins. – AP

600 stuck on Japanese Antarctic greenhouse train during snow storm ■ GERMANY

Germany Researchers at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) have begun construction of an advanced greenhouse in Antarctica, as a test project to grow crops in outer space. The first seeds will be sewn at the end of February, meaning that salad greens and radishes could be harvested by the end of March, according to the DLR. The greenhouse arrived by ship to the icy edge of the continent on January 3. Snowmobiles then towed the greenhouse about 20 kilometres to Neumayer Station III at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI)

where it was placed on a scaffold. But it’s what is on the inside that counts: Vegetables and herbs are expected to thrive without any soil and daylight in this advanced greenhouse. “Shelves will be set up, pumps for nutrient solution will be installed and special LEDs calibrated for optimal illumination” said Eden-ISS Research Director, Daniel Schubert. Eden-ISS is an EU test project that aims to make breakthroughs in providing fresh food to space explorers on long missions to the moon and Mars. – DPA

About 600 passengers were trapped aboard a train Thursday night in a Sea of Japan coastal area as a massive winter storm dumped heavy snow in the region, local media reports. One person was taken to hospital and four were rescued as they felt unwell on the four-car train stranded between Tokoji and Obiori stations in Niigata prefecture since Thursday evening, broadcaster NHK reported. The operator provided food and some beverage for the pas-

sengers, NHK said. The train bound for Nagaoka from Niigata is equipped with restrooms with its heating and interior lights working properly, the operator JR East said. It is not certain when the train service can be resumed though snow removal is under way, the operator said. The storm brought much snow to many parts of Japan as weather authorities warned of blizzard conditions, traffic disruption and risk of avalanches. – DPA

In brief Firefighting resumes Chinese reports say firefighting vessels have resumed attempts to put out a blaze aboard an oil tanker in the East China Sea. The reports follow an explosion aboard the Sanchi, whose 32-member crew is still mostly missing. Photos on the Ministry of Transportation’s microblog showed thick black smoke pouring out of the ship. Rescuers found a body believed to be a crewmember from the Iranian-operated tanker but there has been no sign of survivors. Chinese officials have warned that the tanker could explode and sink, possibly triggering an environmental disaster. The Sanchi was carrying nearly 1 million barrels of condensate, a type of gassy, ultra-light oil. – AP

Dutch ditch phone book After almost 140 years of faithful service, the Netherlands is getting rid of the printed telephone book. The publisher announced that the internet has made the directory redundant and thus the era of the telephone book has come to an end. The vast majority of Dutch people are looking up phone numbers in the online edition of the telephone book, the publisher said. Only a small group of elderly people in rural areas still use the book and this population will be trained this year to search for numbers online. In the first issue of the Dutch telephone directory in 1881 there were 49 addresses. The telephone book will be distributed to the households for the last time from February. – DPA

It is going to be a busy weekend for Allenton captain Jeff Naish, with his side not only taking on Coldstream on Saturday, but also Burnside in the Canterbury club championships on Sunday. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN 161217-RH-053

Double duty for Allenton BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Poor weather during the week is not dampening hopes that the Mid Canterbury senior cricket competition will get back under way today. Methven are set to play host to Lauriston on the artificial wicket at the Methven Domain, while Allenton are playing host to Coldstream at the Ashburton Domain. “It will be touch and go to if we play but with Methven playing on

the artificial wicket, we will press on and try and play,” Allenton captain Jeff Naish said. “It looks like it will be clear, it just might be a bit damp.” With only three rounds to go in the Pritchard Shield, Allenton will be after every game they can get as they bid to chase down Lauriston at the top of the table. “It has been good this year as everybody is beating everybody so it is anybody’s game at this point,” he said.

They still have to get through Coldstream, not an easy task on what will likely be a very green wicket. Richard Print has been one of the top bowlers of the competition so far, and with the likes of Jay Houston also bringing in plenty of bowling firepower, Allenton’s batsmen will have to be on point. That is not to say they do not have good bowlers of their own, but Naish will be looking for an improvement after a seven wicket loss

to Tech in the last round of 2017. Up the road in Methven it is a case of top of the table versus bottom in their game against Lauriston. Runs have been as hard to find on the Methven scorecard as the Canterbury black panther, and captain Davey Maw will be hoping Lauriston’s bowlers had a bit too much turkey over the Christmas break. On Sunday Allenton will get an extra bit of batting and bowl-

ing practice in when they take on the Christchurch premier grade champions in the Canterbury club championships. “It is going to be a really big challenge but it is something that the boys have really been looking forward to,” Naish said. “We do have a few boys away which is a shame so we probably don’t have a full strength squad. “It will be good to get the chance to see what the level of our competition is at compared to theirs.”

Celsea, Arsenal draw

Tournament test for young softballers

Chelsea failed to make their home advantage count as they missed a string of chances to draw 0-0 with Arsenal in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final. The hosts struggled to break down Arsene Wenger’s side despite enjoying the majority of possession and will feel hard done by after crafting the best of the game’s few openings in a lively game at Stamford Bridge. Mid Canterbury’s next crop of softballing talent are testing their skills out against the rest of the South Island at the South Island under-15 championships. Both a boys’ and a girls’ team have made the trip south to Invercargill for the event, which began on Thursday and will run through till Sunday. The boys’ side started off with a high scoring game against Southland, eventually losing 6-13. Their next two games against big brothers Canterbury were more challenging, losing to the Canterbury development side 17-0, and the Canterbury A side 23-1. They picked up their first win of the tournament against Marlborough, winning 9-5. The girls’ side finished with an identical score line against Southland, losing 6-13, while Canterbury A were far too strong, winning 25-0.

‘It’s time to front up’ The Silver Ferns left today heading to London for the opening match of the 2018 Netball Quad Series and captain Katrina Grant assured the team would be ready to perform. “It’s pressure time and we all know it, we all need to front up and start performing,” Grant told Radio Sport. Despite the holiday season Grant said “it’s been a summer of training” for players individually following the Fern’s December training camp. “We’ve been back in our regions for the last week or so training pretty darn hard and back into netball so we can head off to the UK in good nick and play some good netball.” “We’ve been trying to maintain, if not improve, fitness and strength as much as possible as we know that going into three tests against England, South Africa and Australia, three of the top nations in the world, is always going to be tough,” said Grant. The Ferns claimed the Quad Series over Australia for the first time in a stunning 10-goal win last year but failed to maintain momentum after a 4-0 loss to Australia in the Constellation Cup. Grant said it was a very disappointing loss but assured the

Captain Katrina Grant said it’s time for the Silver Ferns to step up and perform. Ferns have grown stronger as a result with the determination to step up in next week’s opening game. “Coming in off 4-0 against Aussie wasn’t pleasant … so coming into December camp all of us were refocusing as a team

as well and making sure we were all on the same page.” “First and foremost we need to go in and we need to win these three games and improve. Those loses against Aussie last year are not gonna be any good for us if we haven’t learnt from them and

that’s the key message I think we’re all going forward with.” The Silver Ferns will come up against the England Roses on January 21 at 7am (NZT). They will then fly to South Africa where they will take on the SPAR Proteas on January 26. - NZME

James hints at early retirement Hinting to an earlier than expected retirement, basketball star LeBron James said his kids would be the deciding factor. The 33-year-old, known as “the king” of basketball, is in the midst of one of his best seasons yet but told USA Today “with his kids getting older he would stop playing earlier than he’d like to”. “I’ve got a 10-year-old boy [Bryce], 3-year-old girl [Zhuri]. Daddy sidekicks in sometimes. That will be a deciding factor in how long I want to play.” “I’ve got a 13-year-old son now [LeBron Jr.]. He’s in the seventh grade. He’s a damn good basket player, too. On this road trip, I’ve already missed four of his games. That’s the thing that kind of sucks,” James said. The three-time NBA champion said he had already gone further than he expected and that his future achievements would be merely “extra credit”. “I’ve been in this spotlight for half of my years. I’m 33 now. This thing started when I was 15. Eighteen years I’ve been in this light. I’ve already exceeded everything I’ve dreamt about.” “At this point, I’m just adding

crazy toppings on the cake like my daughter would do. Throw all kinds of stuff on the cake and whatever happens, happens,” he said. However, the 15-year veteran assured the end was not yet in sight and said when the time came “he’ll just know”. “I don’t know until you make that decision. The game will let you know when it’s over with. “Retirement for me is like getting engaged. I didn’t know if I was ready or not. I just felt it was the time. Timing was right. The vibe was right. “I never had nobody in my family get married before. I never experienced it. I definitely never had nobody in my family play in the NBA and retire. So, we’ll see. We’ll see,” he said. The Cleveland Cavaliers player is currently performing at an MVP level averaging 27.2 points, 9.0 assists, 8.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest. Right – “The king” LeBron James revealed he would consider retirement earlier than expected because of his kids.

Paddon to share Hyundai with teammate Sordo

NZ Rugby name women in refs squad

New Zealander Hayden Paddon has had his 2018 schedule confirmed by the factory Hyundai team at the official season launch in Europe. Hyundai Motorsport has announced that Paddon and Seb Marshall will share the #6 Hyundai with teammate Dani Sordo and the Spaniard’s new co-driver Carlos del Barrio, with Paddon contesting seven of the 13 rallies. Sordo will also contest seven rallies with the team running four cars in Portugal. The Kiwi/Brit pairing get their 2018 season under way at the WRC’s only full-winter rally in Sweden in February. They then contest Portugal (May), Italy (June), Finland (July), Turkey (September), Great Britain (October) and Australia (November). Following a refreshing break at home in New Zealand for the Christmas holidays, Paddon returned to Europe to join the team at the UK’s famed Autosport motorsport show. “I am treating the 2018 season almost like a fresh start after our difficulties from last year,” he said. “I want to put that behind me and use the positives from our podium results to spur us on to achieve what I know we are capable of.

Hayden Paddon is to contest only seven rallies this year. “We will make the most of all seven events this year; being gravel rallies, these are all events that are strong for us and we have good experience of – other than Turkey, which will be new for everyone. “We have nothing to lose, so we will be going all out on these events to fight for podiums and get that edge back. Also by doing more events in the second half of the year, it means we will also have an advantageous road position for most events.” Paddon aims to keep his com-

petitive edge by running an expanded New Zealand programme in his Hyundai New Zealand i20 AP4+ car. Paddon would obviously prefer to be competing at all 13 WRC rallies this year. “I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t prefer to contest the full season, but I have to accept things like this and make the most of each opportunity we get throughout the year. Of course, we will do everything in our power to help the team towards their goal of winning the manufacturers’ title. - NZME

Former Black Fern Rebecca Mahoney and Natarsha Ganley have become the first women selected into New Zealand Rugby’s high performance referees’ national squad. Young referees Lauren Jenner, Maggie Cogger–Orr, Brittany Andrew and Louise Moore have been selected in the wider training group alongside eight other match officials that will work towards the Jock Hobbs national under 19 tournament in Taupo in September 2018. New Zealand Rugby’s high performance referee manager Bryce Lawrence welcomed the inclusion of Mahoney and Ganley as a positive statement about women in refereeing. “This is a fantastic day for refereeing and for women in refereeing. Rebecca and Natarsha are quality referees and will no doubt continue to improve in the high performance environment. “We are determined to have the best match officials in the world who control elite level games. Having Rebecca and Natarsha in the National Squad will see us developing our top men and women officials together to achieve that goal,” Lawrence said. “The growth of the women’s game around the world has meant that rugby unions

around the world are thinking about how we can encourage and support women and girls, into refereeing. “Bringing the best of our male and female referees into one programme, gives others something to aim for, and it ensures that we stay relevant to our rugby communities and audience. The New Zealand national squad officiate at the Mitre 10 Cup, Heartland Championship and Farah Palmer Cup. “Seeing the talent across our wider training group shows the pathway that is available for young referees in this country and we look forward to seeing what they achieve in 2018 and years to come,” Lawrence said. A Heartland union has produced the only other new face in the squad with Damian McPherson from Poverty Bay also joining the ranks. The former Poverty Bay forward took up the whistle in 2015 and last year refereed at the Jock Hobbs Memorial under 19 Final in Taupo. McPherson is one of five referees from Heartland unions to be selected across the three squads. “This goes to show it doesn’t matter where it is you are refereeing, these are all opportunities to be seen.” - NZME

In brief

Weekend Sports Box

Major gong for TNZ

A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was. On the couch . . . The Mid Canterbury sevens side will be on the picture box this week at the national sevens tournament which is being broadcast live on sky sports. With plenty of rapid-fire games packed into both days, there should be plenty of entertaining rugby on show, and hopefully Mid Canterbury can make a huge splash.

The punt . . . Sadly Guppy only really hit his stride in the last game, and sold us a bit short on our bet of the week. This week we are going to dip back in to the world of the Premier League, with most teams having rammed schedules that might throw up some interesting results. Chelsea vs Leicester: Draw @ $5.50 Chelsea looked very jaded against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semifinal earlier in the week and things will not get any easier when they welcome Leicester to the bridge, who have been playing well under Claude Puel and have a red-hot Riyad Mahrez driving them forward. Huddersfield vs West Ham: Draw @$2.95 The price here really represents what to expect from this game, with Brighton more hot and cold than a dodgy kettle, while West Ham love to find ways not to win. Newcastle vs Swansea: Newcastle @ $1.85 The magpies have been another team with some varied form, but and home should be putting away what has been a woeful Swansea side this season. Watford vs Southampton: Watford @ $2.35 Oh Watford, where have thou gone with your great prices for easy wins. Ever since Marco Silva was linked with Everton, the Hornets have looked less like wasps and more like

Pic of the week . . . A-League players usually get a nice little $500 kicker if they pick up the man of bumble bees as they try to figure out how to defend. Luckily they have Southampton coming to town, who have been mediocrely average this season, especially at finding the back of the net. $45 bet could return $3174

The gambler . . . $5 Quaddie won $9,621.30 This punter was able to relax in the last race with a guaranteed return after taking the field in their quaddie bet Canberra Races - Friday 5 December Race 5: 14 Paris Carver at $5.00 (14)

the match award, but for this player, he found himself picking up an extra five gigabytes of data for his phone, how lovely. Race 6: 6 Orange Time at $21.90 (3,6) Race 7: 16 Croix de Vie at $19.20 (16,17) Race 8: 6 Wyendra at $2.20 (Field)

Bizarre sports moment of the week . . . A custom-made category this week, owing to how bizarre it was that ultra-runner Kelly Agnew was able to use a portaloo to win multiple races. As opposed to complete laps of the circuit like everybody else, he just ducked into the dunny for a while, then popped back out to cross back over the finish line.

Sock unlikely to get invite Don’t expect to see Jack Sock playing at the ASB Classic again any time soon. It’s unlikely the American will be invited back to Auckland in the future, despite his status as a former champion and two-time finalist. It wasn’t just the manner of his exit on Wednesday, though that was almost unforgivable. He appeared to be unfocused and disinterested for most of the match against German journeyman Peter Gojowczyk, limping to a 6-3, 6-3 loss in just over an hour. Although he is known as a showman on court, the sight of Sock trying an unnecessary “tweener” from near the baseline late in the second set was strange, as was his random serving style. He also lacked any conviction with his post-match explanations, when he acted like nothing untoward had happened, instead emphasising how good Gojowczyk had been. Sock also mentioned, several times, that it was his first match this year, which conveniently overlooked his Hopman Cup stint last week in Perth, which included two tight sets against Roger Federer and a three-set win over ASB Classic quarterfinalist Karen Khachanov.

A glum Jack Sock is not likely to be invited back to Auckland. Serena Williams got blasted last year for her performance in Auckland but this was different. Williams didn’t cope with the conditions and played some dumb tennis, but Sock just didn’t turn up mentally. Sock’s overall conduct also raised eyebrows with tournament officials, stakeholders and sponsors. He didn’t do any media before the tournament, the first defending champion in recent memory not to face the press. Sock also cancelled a scheduled sponsor appearance at the last minute, and took an unnec-

Ashburton Guardian 19

essary doubles wildcard (meaning a local player couldn’t use one) when he could have signed in and entered with his doubles ranking. Sock was believed to be upset at not being scheduled at night on Wednesday, even though most of his matches last year here were during the day, and he left the arena less than an hour after his match had finished, on his way to the airport. And remember Sock was getting paid a significant five-figure appearance fee, as well as collecting $US8565 ($11,904) as a second round loser.

It’s small beer for a guy who banked around $4.7 million last year, but the fans, sponsors and television audience around the world deserved more. Much more. Sock’s conduct was surprising, especially as this is the same player who got off his sickbed to play in the semi-final and final in 2016. What is just as disappointing is the failure of the ATP to take any assertive steps in this matter. They were mute, even though it was obvious to all in the stadium that something was amiss. The governing body’s stance over the player withdrawal issue that dogged the ASB Classic on Monday and Tuesday was also toothless. The ATP has always been seen as a player-focused organisation, but at some stage they have to take a stand. The conduct of Sock’s compatriot Ryan Harrison, as well as eighth seed Andrey Rubleev was highly disappointing. It’s understood that Harrison’s coach didn’t even make the trip to Auckland, while Harrison arrived, told organisers he was too tired to play and left later that same day, making sure he picked up his $US5075 ($7048) cheque in the process. - NZME

Emirates Team New Zealand landed a major gong at the London Boat Show in light of their stunning America’s Cup success. The Kiwis where announced winners of the prestigious racing performance category at the Yachts & Yachting Awards. The British magazine ran the annual event and award ceremony, commending Team New Zealand’s 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA last year in Bermuda. Team New Zealand beat France’s Vendee Globe winner Armel Le Cleach, Ben Ainslie Racing’s youth academy crew, Britain’s new 49er stars Dylan Fletcher and Stu Bithell, and British offshore racing outfit Concise for the award. They were praised as “plucky Kiwis who scarcely needed introduction” before replays of the team’s performance were run. - NZME

Walsh faces up to Silva World shot put champion Tom Walsh has put his skills to test in a completely different arena. Walsh joined one of those crazy Japanese game shows, which saw him pitted against UFC star Wanderlei Silva. The show, which is apparently called “Who is the Ultimate Man?”, involves a competition that sees athletes put on opposite sides of a glass panel, with both men trying to push each other to the end line. The Kiwi champion – who has close to 30kgs on Silva – was ultimately too much for the UFC star. - NZME

Venus knocked out Kiwi doubles tennis specialist Michael Venus and partner Raven Klaasen have fallen out of the ASB Classic at the semi-final stage. Venus and Klaasen, seeded second at the Classic, lost 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (8-6) yesterday to Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Austrian Philipp Oswald in 99 minutes. Both pairings failed to break serve in a closely fought contest characterised by big service games, but Mirnyi and Oswald handled the key moments better. They rode out the first-set tiebreak with aplomb, securing a 9-7 win after several Klaasen unforced errors, and eked out a 8-6 second-set tiebreak win. The duo will face either the top-seeded Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic or Santiago Gonzalez and Julio Peralta in today’s final. - NZN

Wells brothers in team Jackson and Beau-James Wells will join older brother Byron in the New Zealand team at next month’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Their selection comes just three days after injury forced oldest brother Jossi to withdraw. The 27-year-old was provisionally selected after tearing his patella tendon last June, but pulled out after training on snow showed his knee wasn’t ready for the loading required to compete at Olympic level. Jackson, 19, will compete in freeski slopestyle and 22-year-old Beau-James in freeski halfpipe. PyeongChang will be BeauJames’s second Winter Olympics following his sixth placing in halfpipe at Sochi in 2014. “It’s sad that Jossi will not be coming with us, but I’m really excited that two of my brothers will be there with me,” he said. - NZN

In brief Long Leaf out Pre-post Karaka Million (1200m) favourite Long Leaf is out of the Ellerslie feature. The Victorian youngster earned a $4.50 quote for the January 27 feature following his debut win at Morphettville and further success in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) at Sandown. However, co-trainer David Hayes has decided against a trip to New Zealand, instead setting Long Leaf for next month’s Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. “He’s going really well and as tempting as the New Zealand race is I’m going to stay at home,” he said. “At the time it wasn’t apparent, but the form out of his race (the Merson Cooper) has worked out so well I’m going to stay here and aim him at the Blue Diamond.”

Strong colt eyes Slipper Christchurch trainer Terri Rae will saddle five-year-old Alamosa mare Aspen Lass in the Gr.3 Mills Reef Trentham Stakes (2100m) and the Darci Brahma six-year-old gelding Kolonel Kev in the Gr.3 Tui – Backing Winners Since 1889 Anniversary (1600m), as well as Sacred Desire in the El Cheapo Cars Premier (1200m).

Rae chasing further success Christchurch trainer Terri Rae is no stranger to feature race success at Trentham and she is hoping for further Group Three honours at the Wellington track this weekend. Rae produced Hold It Harvey to win the Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham in 2011 and has two chances to repeat at that level on Saturday. Rae will saddle five-year-old Alamosa mare Aspen Lass in the Gr.3 Mills Reef Trentham Stakes (2100m) and the Darci Brahma six-year-old gelding Kolonel Kev in the Gr.3 Tui – Backing Winners Since 1889 Anniversary (1600m), as well as Sacred Desire in the El Cheapo Cars Premier (1200m). “We’ve made the trip to Trentham quite a few times and Hold It Harvey was able to win there, but he was an everywhere horse. It didn’t matter where he raced,”

Rae said. Aspen Lass and Kolonel Kev clashed last time out in the Listed Timaru Stakes (1600m), with Kolonel Kev making it two wins in as many starts for his new stable, while Aspen Lass was never able to obtain clear running and finished seventh. “She just never got any clear run down the straight,” Rae said of Aspen Lass. “I would have preferred a better draw because she doesn’t just have to go back, but she just hasn’t had any luck with her barriers. She settles really well though. She jumps out and tucks her head so she goes over ground well. “She has that stamina and a reasonable turn of foot. This is a huge step up for her but it will give us a line on where she’s at in this company.” A winner of five of her 17

starts, Aspen Lass was second in the Listed Spring Classic (2000m) at Riccarton in October before winning the Listed Metropolitan Handicap (2500m) at the same track and last season finished fifth in the Gr.3 White Robe Lodge Handicap (1600m) at Wingatui. “If she doesn’t quite match it with them on Saturday she’ll go to the Dunedin Cup [over 2400m at Wingatui on February 3], but if she goes really well she does hold a nomination for the Auckland Cup. “We’ll assess things after Saturday.” Rae attributed a change of environment for sparking Kolonel Kev, who chases a hat-trick of wins when he contests the Anniversary. “It’s a really good field, but he’s got a good draw which will

help him. He’s really only raced in Rating 85 company before his Timaru win so we’ll just see how he goes,” Rae said. “He was boxed in for a little bit but he was strong to the line when he got out and he deserved a trip up north.” Rae was unsure what path Kolonel Kev would follow after Saturday, suggesting he wouldn’t be suited in the White Robe Lodge (1600m) at Wingatui on February 3 with the change in conditions from handicap to weightfor-age. She was pleased with the third of her travelling party Sacred Desire, who races in Rating 75 company on Saturday after a luckless third at Timaru last start. “She’s consistent and didn’t get a run up the straight the other day,” Rae said. - NZ Racing Desk

Orange notches up century on McGrath mounts Blair Orange raced past 100 wins for the season when reining Aloka to victory in the 2700-metre Summer Cup, feature of the Northern Southland Club’s January meeting at Ascot Park on Thursday afternoon. “That’s easily my fastest 100,” said Orange, who one race earlier had reached the century aboard Aloka’s stablemate Gore Bay. The three-year-olds, trained in Canterbury by Nigel McGrath, were decisive winners and Orange was keen to deflect the praise from his own efforts. “They were both fit and ready,” he said. “Thanks to all the owners and trainers; I couldn’t have done it without their support.” In the Southern Belle Speed Series heat run after the Cup, Orange and McGrath combined with Goodlookin Chick and looked for a hat-trick but found

Blair Orange local mare Somejoy, trained and driven by Clark Barron, too strong. It was Barron’s second training win for the day. His first was with GiftofJoy, who Orange was aboard for his

99th of the season. “They’ve both got the ‘Joy’ ability,” Barron said. Giftofjoy is out of Pride N Joy, a qualified but unraced daughter of Mach Three and Joyfulbelle. She has been three times to Art

Major and left two fillies and a colt. Giftofjoy is the first, while her sister Majorpride was sold to Western Australia at last year’s sales. Yearling brother Coogan’s Bluff has been entered for this year. After Giftofjoy’s win, Barron said it helped tick two boxes. “I wanted her to win and run a good time to help the colt at the sales,” he said The one-and-a-quarter length win of Giftofjoy in 2:05.3 (mile rate 1:58.3) had enough merit to suggest the filly could develop classic form before the end of the season. Barron agrees but doesn’t know if it will be for him. “She took time to mature and had some catching up to do,” he said. “She’s come a long way, though and now there’s some interest in her. She might be sold.” - NZ Harness News

Strapping juvenile Wisdom Patch has earned himself an outing in black type company. The son of Snitzel produced a dominant front-running performance to win Thursday’s Baker Racing 1100m at Matamata with next month’s Listed Reid & Harrison Slipper (1200m) now a target. “It was quite a good effort today after he did as much work as he did early and he really kicked well,” said Andrew Scott, who trains the twoyear-old with Lance O’Sullivan. “He’s a lovely, big colt. He’s 16.3 hands so it’s all in front of him.”

Win has a global touch The Tony Pike-trained Caricature added an international flavour when she won at Matamata yesterday. In her second appearance following a debut fourth, the daughter of Power was successful in the Stable Books Maiden (1600m) in the hands of Leith Innes, who sported the colours of the global thoroughbred powerhouse the China Horse Club. “She’s an improving filly and has showed a bit at home, she keeps getting better,” stable representative Kade Ormsby said.

Memorable day Taiki Yanagida posted his first New Zealand winner at Matamata yesterday when he guided stable runner Jewel Of Patch to victory. The 24-year-old, who is apprenticed to Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, combined with the stable runner for a memorable victory in the Ohukia Lodge 1400m. “It was a good ride from Taiki,” Scott said. “He let the horse find its feet and rode patiently. “He’s a hard-working young fellow and hopefully this is the start of a long and successful career.”

Trentham hopes go well Group One contenders Chambord and Heroic Valour stretched their legs between races at Matamata on Friday. The JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) hopes galloped 1000 metres in 58.8 with the closing 600m in 33.5. “They were doing it nicely and both are really finding the line in their races,” said Opie Bosson, who was aboard Heroic Valour. The pair are trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards who also gave Splurge a run over 1000m in 59.7, the last 600m in 34.6. “That will tighten him nicely,” Richards said.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To craft a surprise for another person requires you to be thoughtful, clever, knowledgeable of the other person’s rhythms and tendencies... Bottom line: To craft a surprise is a rather unforgettable act of love. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): New friends are often acquired in a setting of common interest. That’s why you help your chances along by following your curiosities and frequenting the places and topics that really do delight you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Some may know “just enough to be dangerous,” but a lot of ignorance is more dangerous than a little knowledge. A factually accurate education will be the balm that helps all steer clear of danger. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): There are so many strange paradoxes in the world to reconcile. You may fully buy in to two opposite beliefs today. It actually isn’t that confusing as long as you don’t think of them both at once. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You love someone, and you want to make that person happy. And yet, to surrender your own will to the approval and good opinion of another would make you a slave to love. True love is unbound. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Celebrating accomplishment in some way is absolutely critical to the success cycle. It might not seem important to you, but do it anyway. Otherwise the cycle will be broken and ineffective in gaining momentum. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): If even the powerful cannot entirely control their worlds, maybe freedom isn’t really the ability to do whatever you want. Maybe it’s the ability to accept what is. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If you’re constantly afraid of falling out of favour, you’re not in the right place. When you’re among people who really get you, you don’t have to second-guess your every move. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): One way to turn fortunes in your favour is to organise your world the way you want it. Decide on your primary aims first, and then figure out how you’re going to support those ideas. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): A black hole isn’t really a hole; it’s a magnificently dense object with enormous gravitational pull. There’s something in your life you once thought of as empty space that’s actually loaded with power. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’ll give yourself fully to those closest to you, so you really need to make sure your inner circle includes people you can count on to understand you. This is one of the cornerstones of your well-being. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There’s no time to wait around for people to make their minds up. You know what you want, so start moving. The high value you place on your time and energy will inspire others to value it, too.
