Native tree planting initiative launched By Heather Chalmers

heather.c@theguardian.co.nz

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern donned gumboots on Thursday to launch a native tree planting initiative being developed at Synlait’s dairy factory near Dunsandel. A 15-hectare site, known as Whakapuawai, adjacent to the factory is being developed which will incorporate an industrial scale nursery to propagate native plants. This will eventually grow more than one million native trees and shrubs annually, with a goal to plant four million native trees on farms and community land by 2028, Synlait chief executive Leon Clement said. Synlait’s 200 farmer-suppliers would benefit from the initiative. “Our farmer suppliers need trees to restore balance on their land and protect waterways. “We know many of our farmers don’t have the resources, the money or the time to plant these trees themselves, so we are here to help them with that.” Synlait staff will also receive one paid day per year to plant natives as a way of supporting farmers and communities to restore land in Canterbury. Plants from the nursery will be provided free to farmers and staff days would be used to help farmers regenerate areas, particularly riparian planting and

“It might be about plastic straws hurting turtles, but by and large it is about our warming planet.” While the Government had policies to tackle climate change, she said it could only do so much and welcomed Synlait’s initiative. Ardern was joined by the Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor and Synlait staff, milk suppliers and local iwi members at the event. While at Synlait, Ardern also officially opened New Zealand’s first large-scale electrode boiler, commissioned earlier this year to provide process heat and steam for the factory’s dairy liquids facility. This followed a decision by Synlait not to build another coal boiler. Run by electricity, the electrode boiler was six megawatt and a “big kettle”, Clement said. While this was more expensive to install and run than a coalfired boiler, this would change with the cost of carbon under the Emissions Trading Scheme expected to rise. “While the cost of carbon is currently $25 a tonne, at $40 a tonne this electrode boiler makes economic as well as environmental sense,” Clement said. The electrode boiler was part of a strategy by Synlait to reduce its off-farm greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2028.

community groups to make a real difference,” Clement said. Eventually Whakapuawai would contain a wetland, walking tracks, exercise zones and meet-

ing areas. Arden said that as Prime Minister she received many letters from children, and most were about the environment.

Way cleared for new retail complex By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

More than 130 jobs will be created when a new retail complex opens its doors in central Ashburton. The complex, to be built by River Crossing Ltd, on a site on the corner of Cass and South streets, will contain one large, big box retailer (unconfirmed as K-Mart) and a second building that will be home to restaurants and takeaway food outlets. River Crossing Ltd lodged an application for a resource consent for the project in March and the application was heard by

commissioner Ken Gimblett last month. The new complex will adjoin Countdown South in the Business D zone and a number of existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the new development. The consent has been granted with a number of conditions covering construction, land contamination, amenity and landscaping and traffic movement. River Crossing is owned by Tricroft Properties Ltd with its general manager Tony Gilbert saying it was a red letter day for the company when the project

was given the green light. “It’s a massive win,” he said. Gilbert stopped short of confirming the bulk retail tenant would be K-Mart, saying the company had been in discussions for a while with a large format retailer and with national tenants for the food retail spaces. “Most of it’s negotiated but not finalised.” Site clearing would begin once those negotiations were finalised and a work programme would then be prepared with a time frame for the development. The project was a significant one for the Ashburton District,

but it was part of the company’s commitment to investing in Ashburton, Gilbert said. Prior to the November 19 hearing the original application was modified with a proposal to create a number of individual retail stores alongside the bulk retail store, changed to limit these to restaurant and takeaway outlets only. One of the issues that the applicant and objectors could not agree on was the impact the new complex would have on the economic health of Ashburton’s town centre. Gimblett ruled that the town centre appeared to be

in reasonably good health and was relatively robust. If there was a shift in business it was likely to be from other bulk retail stores rather than the town centre. Rather than fearing the impact the arrival of another bulk retail store would have on central town businesses, Paper Plus owner Terry McNab believes it could help stem the flow of local dollars out of town. “The town’s a bit disjointed and it’s too late to stop that. This could keep money in town and any addition to our retail stocks is good. You have to be positive about it,” he said.

■■WHITE ISLAND ERUPTION

Two bodies not yet recovered NZME Six bodies have been recovered from White Island, with a water and aerial search to resume today to try and find the last two bodies remaining on the volcano. Police Commissioner Mike Bush told media yesterday: “It’s not over yet”. It was believed at least one of the bodies, and possibly both, were in the water surrounding the island. A dive squad began a search yesterday afternoon. Earlier, police confirmed at 10.30am that the six bodies would be transported by helicopter to the Navy ship HMNZS Wellington, which is anchored off the island. A total of eight bodies were believed to be on the island. Hayden Marshall-Inman’s brother, Mark Inman, says it feels “fantastic” to have the recovery mission under way. “It’s almost like a relief now it’s happening. It’s going to allow us to grieve and send our loved ones off in the manner they deserve.” Inman said he had pushed for the recovery to happen and was happy authorities had listened. His brother Hayden worked as a White Island tour guide and it is understood he was killed when

he went back to help others after Monday’s eruption. Earlier yesterday police said the recovery operation was “going to plan” but would take longer than first thought, police say. Deputy Police Commissioner Mike Clement said at 9.15am: “The recovery team is in the area where we believe the majority of the bodies are. “The operation is taking more time than expected, this is due to the protective equipment the recovery team is wearing which can be restrictive and heavy but is necessary. “Conditions for the operation are good in regard to the weather, sea state and the environment on the island.” Earlier, Deputy Police Commissioner John Tims said just after 7am yesterday that a blessing had been held at sea with representatives of the victims. “The family representatives are returning to the mainland and the operation to recover the eight bodies on the island has commenced.” The retrieval operation began at first light. It follows days of growing frustration from grieving families at delays in emergency services returning to the island to

Eight others are still missing, presumed killed. Their bodies remain on the country’s most active volcano. Police briefed families on Thursday night about their plans for yesterday’s daring retrieval operation. Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement told media: “We have a plan.” But he warned the mission – involving eight people on the ground and dozens more behind the scenes – was not without risk. Shortly after first light New Zealand Defence Force “assets” would travel to the island assisted by specialist capabilities from other areas including police. Helicopters, the HMNZS Wellington and specialist equipment will all be involved in the operation, which was expected to last several hours. Those returning to the island would wear protective clothing to guard against the toxic gases. “They will go on to the island, making every effort to recover the

bodies and return to the mainland. “I have to emphasise that the risk has not gone. The risk is present.” Despite the protective clothing the team would wear, it wouldn’t completely protect them if Whakaari bursts again. The nation’s thoughts, prayers and love would be with those risking their safety, he said. Police knew through eyewitness interviews and drone and other footage that six bodies could be seen on the island. “But we know that we are missing eight people,” Clement said. The recovery of the six bodies was the focus of yesterday’s venture, as the team deployed will likely run out of time to search for the remaining two. He acknowledged the trade-offs of quickly getting bodies off the island and the impact this may have on the collection of crucial evidence. “Nothing is foolproof, this is not a zero-sum game.”

Environmental milestone By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton Borough School students are celebrating 10 years of green-gold certification as part of the Canterbury-wide Enviroschools programme. The school was first accredited in 2009, and a group of students travelled to Christchurch last week to re-confirm their greengold status. The school was first given the status in 2009 and was the first school in the South Island to achieve it. As part of the programme there are three different tiers of achievement, starting at bronze, going to silver before finishing at the top of achievement on greengold. The school is assessed by Environment Canterbury who run the programme, on five different principles including cultural diversity and sustainability. The students also had to map out their vision for the school and had to develop an enviro vision statement. “Our school will sustain and edcuate about environmentally friendly practices. We will care

We will celebrate our achievements, cultural diversity and practice kaitiakitanga,” the statement says. “We will learn from other cultures, expand our knowledge and grow as leaders. We will have a

positive influence on the community. Our school will take action to try and change the world for future generations.” The programme is driven by the school’s environment team, the Borough Greenies, and teacher in charge John Hooper said they were ecstatic to have

the award re-confirmed. A sign was given to the school when they first achieved the green-gold status but it has not fared well over the past 10 years so to go alongside their certificate, Environment Canterbury also donated a new sign to recognise the achievement.

Council flat residents celebrate the festive season Over 50 council flat residents enjoyed a Christmas Carol sing-a-long and morning tea in the Balmoral Hall yesterday. Live music was provided by a group of local women, who were accompanied by an impromptu Ashburton District Councillor choir. Mayor Neil Brown said this was his first time attending the Christmas party and he enjoyed it. “It is really nice to be here, to be part of bringing joy to the council residents.” Brown made it his personal mission to chat to most of the attendees. “This is a great opportunity for me to talk to people. They tell me their concerns, and the odd complaint, along with council bouquets too, which is nice.” He was particularly encouraged to hear that the residents he spoke to were all being well supported by friends and family over the festive season.

In brief Boatie warning Boaties heading south this summer are being warned to watch out for debris in a number of lakes following heavy rainfall. As a result of recent heavy rainfall, a significant amount of debris is currently floating or submerged in the Waitaki rivers and lakes. Environment Canterbury’s Harbourmaster, Gary Manch said that Lake Benmore, Lake Aviemore, Lake Ohau, Lake Waitaki and Lake Ruataniwha are all affected. Submerged and floating logs in particular are currently a hazard for recreational river and lake use and will remain a hazard for a number of weeks, throughout the summer boating season. Manch says that it is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure the area you are using is navigable and safe to transit, and that they strongly recommend keeping speeds to a minimum.

Property passed in An historic Mid Canterbury property went under the auctioneer’s hammer yesterday, but failed to find a buyer. Valetta homestead and 20 hectares of land were ordered to auction by the High Court of New Zealand for Malley and Co, lawyers. The property had been owned by Janine and Linda Sundberg since 1995. Bidding opened at $100,000 and was followed by a vendor bid of $200,000. Bidding then rose slowly to $350,000 where it stalled. It reopened with a vendor bid of $400,000 but this generated no interest from the 40 strong gallery and the property was passed in. It has a rating valuation of $1 million as at July 2018. It was last sold in 1995 for $252,000.

Hydroslide plans New Zealand’s first “trapdoor” hydroslide which propels adrenalin seekers at 40km/h was yesterday unveiled as a key part of Christchurch’s new post-quake Metro Sports Facility. Plans for the hydroslide tower complex were released yesterday by Ōtākaro, the Crown-owned company delivering the central city anchor projects that the Government committed to after the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes. The plans show five water slides, including the 12.6m-high Looping Rocket where riders stand on a floor that suddenly drops away. - NZME

■■ FIRE AND EMERGENCY

Recruits shown the ropes

By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

A group of prospective firefighters are starting to be shown the ropes as they begin their journey to become part of Fire and Emergency New Zealand. A group of eight prospective rural firefighters and operational support staff joined a number of established firefighters in Mona Square on Wednesday night for a few basic lessons in rolling up hoses and how to run them out ready for use. Chief rural controller Greg Bruce said it was a perfect opportunity to show the new recruits who are not able to use hoses with water yet just how it is done without being on an actual fire-ground. Training is often varied for the firefighters and can take place in a variety of locations. “It just depends what is planned really, sometimes it is just out the back of the station,” he said. For these new recruits there is still a few months of training ahead of them at least before they can get fully involved. “For these guys this is only

their second time together so there will be a few more in the new year and then we can get them in to their basic training before we look at getting them out in to the fire-ground,” he

said. The new recruits were picked up through an open day held at the station recently and bring a good mix of ages with two women also part of the group.

■■ DRIVING FOR ZERO

Warning for festive season partying Road safety charity Brake is appealing to partygoers and organisers to ensure everyone in their group gets to and from celebrations safely. As work Christmas parties and other celebrations are in full swing, and with many people planning parties for this weekend, Brake is reminding everyone to plan their travel, and if driving to events, making sure the designated driver stays sober. Brake’s Driving for Zero campaign urges drivers not to drink any amount of alcohol or take any drugs before getting behind the wheel.

The charity also urges family and friends to speak out and stop a loved one drink or drug driving. Figures show that in 2017, alcohol and/or drugs was a factor in 111 fatal and over 1100 injury crashes resulting in 130 deaths and over 1500 injuries. Research shows that drinking any amount of alcohol can affect your driving. “As a charity that supports people bereaved and injured in crashes, we witness the suffering that drink and drug driving inflict, and appeal to everyone to help put a stop to it. Drink and drug driving deaths and injuries

are cruel and needless, ending and ruining lives and leaving behind traumatised families to pick up the pieces,” Brake’s New Zealand director Caroline Perry said. “We want everyone to enjoy this holiday season and get to their destination safely. If you’re driving home from celebrations it’s vital you take your responsibility for people’s safety seriously. It’s a proven fact that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs inflate your risk of crashing. So even if you feel okay after a drink, the reality is that if you get behind the wheel you’re putting yourself and others in needless

danger. The only safe amount of alcohol to have if you’re driving is none.” Drivers with even 20-50mg alcohol per 100ml of blood are at least three times more likely to die in a crash than those with no alcohol in their blood. Even small amounts of alcohol affect drivers’ reaction times, judgment and co-ordination. Alcohol also makes it impossible for drivers to assess their own impairment because it creates a false sense of confidence and means drivers are more inclined to take risks and believe they are in control when they’re not.

■■CANCER SOCIETY

Lions support cancer shuttle Local Lions clubs, Mayfield and Districts, Ashburton County and Ashburton, recently joined fellow clubs from Mid and South Canterbury, West Coast, Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough to raise $11,450 towards the running costs of the Canterbury West Coast Cancer Society Christchurch Shuttle. This shuttle solely transports patients daily from their accommodation in Daffodil House and Daffodil Lodge in Christchurch to receive radiation or chemotherapy treatment at Christchurch Hospital, making in excess of 16,000 patient transfers annually with a total running cost of $62,800. Of these 16,000-plus transfers, about 35 per cent are from the Nelson/Marlborough area, 30 per cent from the West Coast region, 22 per cent from Mid/ South Canterbury and the remaining 13 per cent from the regions of Kaikoura, Cheviot, Hanmer, Southland and Otago. This service is invaluable and the importance of the shuttle cannot be minimised as patients and their supporters are going through a traumatic time in their lives while living away from their environment. The shuttle takes away any added pressure of traffic, parking and weather they would otherwise have to contend with. The contributions from the Lions clubs will essentially cover the fuel costs of the shuttle for the year. The Lions clubs have been making this an annual event. This is the third year that the project has been running and so far $37,250.00 has been contributed to the cause.

E-scooters get Selwyn green light By Jonathan Leask jonathan@selwynapp.nz

E-scooters hit Selwyn streets on Thursday after the Selwyn District Council adopted the updated Traffic and Parking Bylaw on Wednesday. The updated bylaw included changes that make it legal for commercial e-scooters to use and park on Selwyn streets. Both Lime and Lin-

coln-based Lava indicated that once the bylaw was adopted they would have scooters available in the trial areas on Thursday morning ushering in the start of a six month e-scooter trial. In October, the council voted to allow the trial of 250 e-scooters, subject to the adoption of the reviewed Traffic and Parking Bylaw.

Timaru Mayor Nigel Bowen

Flood response praised By Sam Morton sam@timaruapp.nz

Led by Timaru District mayor Nigel Bowen and collectively supported by all councillors, calls of praise and admiration were conveyed from the council chambers on Tuesday, with the council acknowledging the efforts of council staff and the community for stepping up in a time of need. Reflecting on the tireless work and dedication from council staff in response to the state of emergency declared on Saturday morning, Bowen expressed his pride in being involved in an organisation that delivered, and continues to deliver, first class service to everyone and anything affected. “I have been so impressed with the entire organisation here at council, the response and work has been incredible. It certainly wasn’t business as usual, there was a real threat to some of our community, but from leadership, volunteers and right through to the welfare centres . . . it makes me really proud to be a part of this organisation,” Bowen said. Bowen also acknowledged the community spirit and inclusiveness among the South Canterbury townships, with particular emphasis on Geraldine. “To put it in perspective, if we had a toll for every vehicle that passed through, we’d be very, very wealthy. The way Geraldine took in stranded travellers and the stories we have heard coming out of that area has left a lasting impression on those that have passed through. “Every volunteer that helped the situation, thank you and well done . . . you’ve done us all proud.” Echoing Bowen’s sentiments, councillor Peter Burt said he was thrilled to see the community step up, as they have done on so many previous occasions. “When adversity strikes, people step up and we’re so fortunate to be part of such a welcoming and incredible community.”

Under the conditions of the trial licence the e-scooters will be allowed to operate in Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton, and to travel between the towns using cycle lanes. Reduced speed areas will be in place for council reserves, and in the vicinity of halls and community centres and e-scooters will not be allowed in council cemeteries.

Free water tests for flood area Timaru District Council is offering free water testing for properties within the Rangitata Flood Risk Zone. One free water test will be offered to people in the flood risk zone between Monday, December 16 and Wednesday, December 18. All people need to do is phone the council on 03 687 7200 to book a test. Timaru Civil Defence controller Tracy Tierney said that offering these tests was one small way the council could help. “People working on farms throughout the area will have many things to worry about, but ensuring you have a safe

source of drinking water is critical so this is one small thing we can take care of. “The tests will give a quick indication of whether the water coming out of your tap is up to standard to use for eating, drinking and preparing food.” At 2.56pm on Friday the state of emergency for the Timaru District was officially withdrawn, and the Timaru District Council’s emergency operations centre will be transitioning from response to recovery mode, where they will work to provide the advice and services to help get the community back to normal.

Celebrating their last day at primary school by planting a tree, Chertsey Year 6 students (from left) Olivia McFarlane, Rhiannan Choat and Chloe Davis.

Students plant a peach tree for remembrance By Sue Newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

Leaving the primary school that has been part of your life for six years is a big event for any student, but when your school is the Ashburton District’s smallest, its even more significant. On Wednesday Olivia McFarlane, Rhiannan Choat and Chloe Davis spent their final day at school preparing for their prize giving ceremony and taking part in a tree planting event. This is the first year Chertsey School has signed on for Bunnings tree planting Leavers Programme, with board chair Fiona McFaull saying it was a great way to recognise and remember the school’s senior students.

The three planted a miniature peach tree that already had a healthy crop of fruit growing on its tiny branches. Bunnings staff member Mary Banks said the leavers’ programme was a nationwide one and all schools were invited to sign on. As well as a new tree for the school grounds, the students were given packets of seeds they could either plant at school or take home. The three Chertsey leavers will start their new school as bus students attending Ashburton Intermediate and while they were excited about the change, all three said it would be a very different experience attending a school with a role of more than 400 after spending their school days at a school with around 30.

While posted messages to Santa might not reach the North Pole in time for Christmas, New Zealand Post will still make sure that Santa can get responses to only messages out by December 23, and he has even learnt a new language to write them in. Santa will be responding to online messages until December 23, and for the first time children will have the option to receive their responses in te reo Maori. NZ Post general manager of consumer marketing and brand, Sarah Sandoval, aka the Head Santa’s Helper, says it’s great being able to offer responses in te reo this year. “Last year a parent wrote to us suggesting that we offer te reo and we thought, absolutely we should,” she said.

“The Santa’s Helpers at NZ Post love being able to bring the magic of writing to Santa to young Kiwis. We’ve been running this tradition for over 20 years and this year we’ve been receiving letters since August.” Physical letters to and from Santa closed this week, in order to ensure children got their replies in time, but online messages to Santa are still open. No conviction for wife-puncher NZME A former corporate high-flyer who punched his wife in the face has been discharged without conviction so he can stay in New Zealand with his family. Jissen Porathur Johny’s partner sat in the public gallery at the Dunedin District Court on Thursday and cried with relief at Judge Emma Smith’s decision. In a statement, she said her husband was not normally so violent. When he hit her it was usually “a light backhand to the face”, she said. A conviction, counsel Deborah Hen-

derson argued, would have resulted in the 49-year-old defendant being deported and forced to apply for residency or a visa from overseas, splitting him from his wife and two children. The judge said – “by a small margin” – that outcome would have been out of all proportion to the gravity of the offending. It was a significant blow to his self-esteem when he struggled to get employment here and instead spent his time looking after the children, Judge Smith said. Johny was ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Drone images taken by Sam Anderson shows the damage that the flooding caused at Arundel on Sunday. PHOTO SAM ANDERSON

Floodwaters cut island in half O

ne week ago the South Island was essentially cut in half after the Rangitata River flooded, cutting off access to the two bridges that span the river. Travellers were trapped on either side of the river for days until the Inland Route 72 at Arundel re-opened, allowing traffic to flow once again.

On Wednesday the bridge at State Highway 1 re-opened, restoring both crossings of the river. Plenty of work is still to be done to deal with the flooding, with floodwaters still flowing through farms on the south side of the river as contractors attempt to move the river’s flow away from where it burst its banks.

A section of around 350m of railway line was swept away by the floodwaters causing serious damage to the line, affecting what would usually be six services along the line in a day. Here are some of the images that captured the impact that this one-in20-year flood had on the Ashburton District.

Even on Wednesday afternoon some travellers did not know that State Highway 1 was closed leading to Downer workers having to play navigator.

An aerial pic of the flooding in the Rangitata shows just how much water has been running through farmland on the south bank of the river.

■■CHISTMAS DEBT

Paying off debt after Christmas NZME Around one in every four adults went into debt to pay for Christmas last year and some are still paying it off, research shows. Young people – those aged 18 to 34 – were the most likely to go into debt to pay for the season with nearly a third of them doing so while 55- to 64-year-olds were the least likely, figures from a survey by the Commission for Financial Capability show. Just over three in every 100 people were still paying it off when the research was undertaken in November – nearly a year after the prior Christmas. A further 14.5 per cent of those surveyed took less than three months to pay off the debt while 6.3 per cent took three to six months. Tom Hartmann, managing editor at the Commission for Financial Capability, pointed to Reserve Bank data which showed New Zealand’s credit card spending peaks every December and has continued to rise. “We are taking more and more

and putting it on the credit card. The trend is not changing at all.” Hartmann said it was not surprising that young people took on more debt as they were typically starting out in their careers and their earning levels were lower. “The natural thing is to pay it out of future earnings which is what debt is.” But he was surprised by the nearly 30 per cent (28.5) of 35- to 54-year-olds that went into debt

did have and only spending that cash. “It will result in much more sharper decisions on what your choices will be.” Other ways include setting a dollar limit with friends and family or doing Secret Santa. “There is also still a lot of time to do comparison shopping online.” Look at redeeming any rewards you have or consider making home-made vouchers which involve giving time for things like babysitting or a back rub, rather than a physical present. Hartmann said if presents were going to be given it was often a good idea to get children something they needed like clothes, shoes or swimwear rather than a plastic toy that could end up in a landfill within a year. “We are in a high-pressure environment where it feels like everyone else is spending more than you.” But he urged people to focus on making good Christmas memories rather than trying to keep up with what they believed others were doing.

to pay for Christmas. Hartmann said using a credit card enabled people to spend more with research pointing to it being as much as 30 per cent more. “Using a credit card is not just easier but we know the brain works differently when you pay by cash versus credit card.” “With cards it is all pleasure, the pain is postponed until you get the statement.”

Hartmann said the unfortunate situation in New Zealand was that Kiwis were hit by the dreaded debt triangle at this time of year – Christmas, holidays and then back to school costs. Often it took people until March to get on top of the debts. Hartmann said March onwards was a good time for people to plan ahead and start putting money aside for the “debt triangle”. “That will mean next time the debt triangle comes around you are much better prepared.” The research found 22 per cent of people put away a little bit each month throughout the year for Christmas and a further 17 per cent put money aside in the two to three months before. But 37 per cent said they paid for Christmas and the summer holidays from current income or borrowed. Hartmann said that while it was too late to start saving now for this Christmas there were steps people could take to reduce the amount of debt they took on. One suggestion was taking money out of the bank that you

Kiwi gadget fans have long been annoyed by the absence of the cellular version of Apple’s Watch from NZ. That changed yesterday, with the Apple Watch Series 5 GPS + Celluar finally going on sale, priced from $929 (the GPS-only version retails from $729). The barrier had been that no telco offered support for an Apple Watch eSIM (or electronic SIM – a virtual version of the physical SIM card you slide into a phone). Now, Spark has come to the party – which means you can use the cellular version of Apple’s Watch to make calls, send texts and use apps like Apple Pay and Uber without the need to tether to an iPhone. Spark’s new $12.99 per month One Number Wearable Plan lets your Apple Watch share your iPhone’s calling minutes and txt plan (though again, your handset doesn’t need to be in coo-ee), and your Watch gets unlimited data (or at least unlimited up to 40GB, after which it can be throttled). The Herald was able to make one of the first Apple Watch cellular calls on the new Wearable Plan on Thursday, taking advantage of the new eSIM support plus a second required technology component: VoLTE (4G voice-calling), also just added by Spark. It worked fine. There was no real surprise there, since all three major carriers across the Tasman have offered support for the Apple Watch cellular for a couple of years. Still,

it was good to see it in the flesh. For calls, there’s no need to hold your watch to your mouth in Dick Tracy fashion. You can have your wrist near your waist in a natural position and call quality is clear. The new cellular support also means Watch Series 5 (GPS + Cellular) owners get international emergency calling. With eSIM support, the Apple Watch finally feels fully-rounded. And more so because all versions of the Series 5 also add to crucial advances: an always-on display (no more flicking your wrist ostentatiously in meetings to wake it up) and the ability to download apps directly to the watch. When the Herald last covered eSIMs, back in September 2018, the verdict was that they were great for customers. But Telecommunications Users Association head Craig Young said phone companies also feared that eSIMS made it easier to switch providers – hence some foot-dragging. The One Number Wearable Plan

is currently only available for the Apple Watch Series 5, but Spark says it’ll be expanded to support other devices in future. But now that Spark has crossed the Rubicon, its rivals are sure to follow – although the timetable is hazy at this point. “We remain committed to delivering eSIM support on our network in the future however the roll-out in New Zealand has been delayed due to a range of factors. Our team is working on a release as soon as possible, but we are unable to confirm a date just yet,” a Vodafone NZ spokeswoman said. A spokeswoman for 2degrees said, “We are looking at how we might bring this technology to our customers. At this stage, we can’t say when that will be.” Spark offered is first eSIM support back in April, when it introduced support for the technology for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and for Apple’s latest iPhones (eSIM support has been a mainstay for highend models with all the top handset brands for a while now – it’s just been, as with smartwatches, that there’s been no mobile carrier in NZ to support the capability). Whereas an eSIM setup can allow an iPhone and an Apple Watch to share one number, it can enable one handset to host two phone numbers – a boon if you want to juggle home and work numbers on a single handset, or if you’re travelling and want to buy a local phone account without the need to faff around swapping out a physical SIM card.

■■UNITED STATES

Trump mocks Greta Thunberg AP President Donald Trump mocked Greta Thunberg, the Swedish 16-year-old climate activist, calling her distinction as Time magazine’s Person of the Year “ridiculous” yesterday and suggesting that she work on anger-management issues and go to a movie with a friend. Trump’s advice, in a morning tweet, came a day after Thunberg, who has mobilised millions of people to fight climate change and condemned leaders’ inaction, became the youngest person to be dubbed Person of the Year by Time. “So ridiculous,” Trump tweeted. “Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!” Trump was responding to a tweet congratulating Thunberg by Roma Downey, an actress and producer from Northern Ireland. Her production credits include the History Channel mini-series The Bible, which she also starred in as Mary, mother of Jesus. She is also married to Mark Burnett, a producer on Trump’s previ-

Greta Thunberg ous NBC reality television series, The Apprentice. Thunberg, who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, wasted little time in offering a rejoinder to Trump. Shortly after his tweet, she had updated her Twitter profile to read: “A teenag-

er working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.” Trump, who has called climate change a “hoax,” also took note of Thunberg in September, following an appearance at a United Nations

climate summit where she offered an impassioned – and somewhat fatalistic – plea to global leaders. “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” Trump wrote on Twitter at the time. Thunberg subsequently embraced Trump’s sarcastic description and altered her Twitter profile to describe herself to her followers as “a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future”. At her UN appearance, Thunberg chastised leaders for praising young activists such as herself while failing to deliver on drastic actions needed to avert the worst effects of climate change, and she warned that if the world continued with business as usual, her generation would face an insurmountable catastrophe. In explaining Time’s choice of Thunberg as Person of the Year, the magazine’s editor in chief, Edward Felsenthal, said that “she became the biggest voice on the biggest issue facing the planet this year, coming from essentially nowhere to lead a worldwide movement”.

Thunberg represents a broader phenomenon of young people pushing for change, Felsenthal said during an appearance on NBC’s Today show. He pointed to the Parkland, Florida, high school students who became a leading voice on gun control, as well as to another finalist for 2019 Person of the Year: the Hong Kong protesters who have spent months in the streets urging democratic reform. A few hours after Trump’s tweet, his campaign sent out an altered image of the Time magazine cover featuring Thunberg – with Trump’s head superimposed on Thunberg’s. In the campaign’s version, Trump was the Person of the Year, with a cover that promoted “the power of promises kept”. Trump, who was among the five finalists for the distinction this year, has had a long obsession with the magazine’s selections, dating back before he became president. Fake 2009 Time covers showing Trump as person of the year and touting his days as host of The Apprentice have been found hanging in several of his golf clubs.

OUR VIEW

New build a vote of confidence I

n an era when bricks and mortar shopping is under threat on all fronts from online traders, it’s a real vote of confidence in Ashburton to see not only an investor building a new retail complex but also in a national big box retailer deciding to set up there. That K-mart is coming to town is probably one of Ashburton’s worst kept secrets and while no one is confirming they’ll be the new tenant in the River Crossing complex off South Street, it’s an odds on bet they are. Fantastic news. Yes, it’s another big national entity coming to town, and yes it will be doing

business outside the CBD, but for locals, having a second onestop store that doesn’t break the budget is great news. This is about more than just consumerism, however. Having another national retailer on our doorstep will go some way towards stopping the outflow of cash from Ashburton to

Christchurch or to online retailers. We’re dreaming if we believe we can ever keep every retail dollar local, but by having a fair bit of what’s on offer elsewhere on our doorstep we’re going some way towards doing that. Yes, it would have been perfect if the new store and its accompany food outlet businesses were being built right in the heart of Ashburton, but the opportunity to do this simply wasn’t there. That land’s in the hands of other developers with other plans. There’s always criticism of builds outside the CBD fragmenting the town. That fragmen-

tation is an old story. It started years ago with developments in the West and Moore streets area. CBD retailers fought long and hard to stop that happening. They lost and what we have there now is a good complement to the true CBD. It’s continued in other areas on the outskirts of the CBD and life’s carried on. Fragmentation and a sprawling shopping area are just part of life in most towns and cities and the construction of the new River Crossing complex will be no different. Countdown already has its second store in that area and it’s now just part of the town.

We need new facilities, new service to keep our vibrancy. Yes our CBD is a mess with its yawning gaps, but have faith, there are already good examples that it’s coming back to life. Certainly there will be more demolitions but there will also be more rebuilds and with those rebuilds will come new businesses. The heroes in all of this are our local landowners, developers and investors. They need a huge round of applause for their absolute belief in this district and for their willingness to invest huge amounts of money in the place they call home.

Behold Christmas Dad P

lease stand and raise a half-filled, lukewarm cup of tea to the arrival of the moment many males have been secretly awaiting – the season of the Christmas Dad! Yip, all year the male of the family, the one who thinks he knows all about social media and snap chit-chat, the one that shops at a petrol station on the eve of Mother’s Day, is about to have his moment. The Christmas Dad is a simple but essential element of a family Christmas. Christmas is an evolving event we have inherited, and the Kiwi Christmas brings out the slowest to evolve – the Christmas Dad. Let’s begin with the essential clothing needed to be a Christmas Dad. Firstly, a Christmas Dad must wear a seriously obnoxiously loud Hawaiian shirt made from a material that doesn’t need ironing. It must be so bright that the Queenstown evening flight attempts to land in the backyard while Christmas Dad is frantically mowing lawns on Christmas Eve. The shirt is then complemented with baggy cargo shorts. They are worn, stained and comfortable and must be of the correct length. They need to be anywhere from mid-shin to just above the knee, any higher and they make Christmas Dad look like a 1970s primary school teacher. Below the shorts a Christmas Dad wears sports socks and running shoes, the smellier the better. This ensemble could be elegantly topped off with either a cap on backwards and sunnies, for that ‘down-with-the-bros’

Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL

fashion statement, or a beanie to create the ultimate evening barbecue look. From the undesirable wardrobe, Christmas Dad now really hits his stride when he chooses any of the following actions he believes demonstrates his festive intelligence. Pull my finger: Yip, a Christmas Dad knows that at the Christmas dinner table, those cheap Christmas crackers are as entertaining as a visit from the auditor. So he pre-loads on sizzlers the night before and comes armed with four strong winds. Just after a sorry attempt at grace (because the mother-inlaw is there), he turns to any child and says, “pull my finger” upon which a torrent of chargrilled emulsified sizzler gas is sent forth like the Rangitata in flood, breaching all social norm stopbanks along the way. This gives Christmas Dad an enormous sense of self-worth as he has decimated any subtle special Christmas atmosphere Christmas Mum had been attempting to create, beginning with the playing of that infernal Mariah Carey Christmas CD for the last three hours. Air guitar: It doesn’t matter if it’s before Christmas lunch or at

the Boxing Day barbecue, Christmas Dad in a moment of 1980s inspiration, manages to play Summer of ’69 by Brian Adams and think he can shred it like Slash on the air guitar. A Christmas Dad uses a combination of high arm action, partially alcohol-infused hip movements and weird mouth contortions to imagine he is at a rock concert. In his mind there are thousands of screaming fans, climbing over safety barriers attempting to be sprayed by his eyebrow sweat. In reality his wife has shunned him like the world did to Rolf Harris, the kids have moved to the furthest corner of the property and the only audience he has is the cat, hoping the half eaten sizzler in his cargo shorts will fall out. Christmas toy playing: A fever pitch moment for any Christmas Dad, is when the freshly ripped open toys are left alone. Here in the aftermath of torn paper and thousands of those horrible plastic wire twisty things, a Christmas Dad appears to casually pick up a toy and pose the innocent question – “I wonder how this works?” The reality is that Christmas Dad couldn’t wait for spoilt-brat nephew to ditch it so he could have a play. Lying full stretch in the lounge, Christmas Dad is a magnificent sight as he almost dribbles with delight, playing and longing for toys he wishes he had been given. Christmas Dads have been known to actually scuttle away with a toy and snarl ‘my precious’ like Gollum, such is the

attraction of highly polished cheap Chinese plastic laid out before him. Mall marathons: But it is not all cargo shorts and air guitars for Christmas Dad. Leading up to the big day, a Christmas Dad knows, at some point, he must run a mall marathon. This one single soul-destroying journey into the pit of a thousand paper cuts must be endured if a Christmas Dad is to have the right to use pull my finger on Christmas Day. A mall marathon is beyond words. It is like someone decided to analyse the male brain, work out what would destroy him, and bring it together in a foul smelling, money sucking, slow people walking, snake oil selling, hall of hell. That Christmas Dads have been known to endure more than one mall marathon, should be recognised in a national award ceremony. So, if a Hawaiian shirt wearing old fart asks you to pull his finger, please indulge him, Christmas Dads only come out once a year and that is worth celebrating! False start for women

Crucial round on the court

P19

Chasing national glory By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

The Mid Canterbury district will have a strong representation when the Bowls New Zealand Nationals arrive in Christchurch early next year. Entries for the hugely popular tournament, which is held over six days from January 2 through to January 8, will see a big contingent of players heading up State Highway 1 to compete in both the singles and the pairs competitions. Just two women have entered the singles section from Mid Can-

terbury, Rachel Davies and Sandra Keith. Keith, a former winner of the event, will be out to recapture some of her best form and remind everyone just how much of a force she can be on the greens, while Davies has been a rapid riser in the Canterbury bowling ranks and will be out to further enhance her identity on the national scene. Keith also has an entry in the pairs discipline and will team up with Davies, while Di Callaghan and Sandra Holdom also hold entries for that particular stage

Rachel Davies is one of just two local entries in the Bowls New Zealand National singles championship early next year in Christchurch. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN of the championships. There will be a lot more interest in the men’s action from a Mid Canterbury angle, with a dozen players from this district competing. Notable players Rodney Greaney, Craig Carter, Alec Crawford and Brentton Donaldson will lead the local charge but the chances don’t stop there with Jeff Nowell, Alan HIll, Neil Atkinson, Greg Lock, Brent Mayson, Gary Blackwell, Rob Fenson and Si-

mon Fleetwood also in the lineup chasing singles glory. In the pairs, eight locals will skip sides with a number of others playing with other players from around the Canterbury region. Greaney, Carter, and Donaldson all hold an entry while Gary Eddington, Bruce Harper, Mayson, Lock and Hill are also entered in the competition. While the national championships formerly saw all of the dis-

ciplines competed for over the course of the championships in the same venue, in recent years it has been adapted to have just the singles and the pairs played together, while the fours championships are set to be held in Mount Maunganui on February 27 next year. The singles and pairs will be played across a number of clubs in Christchurch with Bowls Papanui the centrepoint for the championships.

Momentum imperative

By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury’s two cricket sides will both be out to gain some momentum this weekend ahead of the Christmas break in the Canterbury Country Combined competition. For the Tech Stags, who are yet to lose a match this season, the break will be a little more easy to get through than what it might be for their Allenton counterparts, who are sitting right on the cusp of holding down second on the points table.

The Allenton team travel to Greendale today to take on the Greendale senior side in what could be a vital match for the maroon and golds. They’ve been brilliant at times. And then at other times frustrating, but a win going into a good lengthy break over the holiday season could work the oracle as they look to push for higher honours in the new year. Also fresh in their minds will be the fact Greendale managed to run down a poor total set by them when they clashed in Ashburton

Allenton will be out to avenge an early season defeat to Greendale when they travel north of the Rakaia today. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN back at the start of November. Allenton were rolled for 160 and Greendale chased it down with four wickets to spare. The keys to success will rest firmly on the shoulders of some of their better performers for the season thus far. Manpreet Hakkla is averaging 67.6 with the bat in the competition and has been the most consistent of the Allenton batsmen, scoring two half centuries.

With 161 runs on the board for the competition top-of-the-order batsmen, Karmjeet Singh has also been more than useful averaging 26.8. With the ball, Mana Singh has been the chief destroyer, claiming nine wickets which has him near to the top of the overall wicket-takers in the competition. Manpreet Hakkla has also been dangerous, taking eight wickets. Both Allenton and Tech are

Joint bid for 2023 Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand have joined forces in a bid to host the Women’s World Cup in 2023. Football Federation Australia and New Zealand Football announced the co-confederation bid yesterday in Melbourne, hours before the official bid book was to be submitted to soccer’s world governing body FIFA in Zurich. FIFA has plenty of contenders to host the first 32-team Women’s World Cup. Other bids are expected from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Japan and South Korea, which could be a joint project with North Korea. Australia’s star striker Sam Kerr said the women’s game in Asia and Oceania would get a significant boost from the investment and interest generated by hosting a World Cup. “There is so much untapped potential, not just in Australia but right across Asia and the Pacific region, that I really do believe we would offer something incredi-

heading into this weekend having missed last weekend’s game against each other with the match abandoned. Tech have a crossover match in store this afternoon when they head to Brookside to take on Oxford in a match which they shouldn’t be taking too lightly. After today’s play, both sides will be out of action until January 18 when they return for the second half of the season.

bly special,”said Kerr, who scored fives goals in four games as Australia reached the knockout stage of the World Cup in France earlier this year. “I really believe that Australia and New Zealand would be incredible hosts to take the game forward. “It is also fitting that New Zealand was the Matildas’ first full international opponent 40 years ago and now we are partnering in a bid to host the biggest women’s sporting tournament on the planet.” Australia and New Zealand were in the Oceania confederation before Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. The countries have co-hosted the Rugby World Cup and the Cricket World Cup and each hosted those events solo. Australia hosted the Olympics in Melbourne in 1956 and in Sydney in 2000. New Zealand international Rosie White played in the under-17

Rosie White Women’s World Cup when her country hosted it in 2008 and has since been to three senior Women’s World Cups. ”New Zealand would be an amazing host for the World Cup – not only are we a hugely popular destination for tourists, but we know we can put on a show,” White said. ”New Zealanders are fantastic at banding together and getting

things done, we are known for being amazing hosts.” Grant Robertson, New Zealand’s Minister for Sport and Recreation, said the countries “can work as a team to deliver something unique and world class, while also creating a legacy for women and for football in our countries and across Asia and Oceania.” Soccer administrators in both countries decided a joint bid had more chance of success than going it alone. “The opportunity to partner, across not just member association boundaries but also confederation boundaries, represents a new level of cooperation for football,” NZF President Johanna Wood said. “The level of co-operation in a short period of time to develop the joint bid submission highlights the excellent way in which the nations would work to host the tournament proper.” FIFA will conduct inspections of all candidate bids in January and February ahead of a FIFA Council vote expected in May.

Ferguson ruled out The Black Caps’ already difficult quest to claim victory over Australia has just become even tougher. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson won’t bowl another delivery in the first test in Perth, after suffering a muscle-tendon strain in his right calf while bowling on Thursday. Ferguson, making his test debut in place of the injured Trent Boult, got through 11 overs in the sapping heat before hurting his calf, and hobbling off before the end of the second session. He didn’t return to the field in the final session after going to get a MRI scan, and the results which came back were not good for the Black Caps’ chances, with the speedster ruled out of bowling for the remainder of the test with the tendon strain. Ferguson, who ends his test debut with figures of 11-1-47-0, is still available to bat at No 11, but his absence will leave the Black Caps with just four frontline bowlers.

■■RUGBY

False start for women’s team By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Hampstead’s plans to field a women’s rugby team in 2020 have come to an abrupt halt. Earlier this week the club announced on their social media channels that despite their best efforts to field a team that the expressions of interest in being a part of the new venture didn’t quite correlate to commitments when it came to putting a squad together. The Guardian understands another major sticking point was that the club was only allowed to draw on a certain number of players who had played in the Metro competition last year as per the regulations of the competition, meaning that many of those who had played for other sides during this year were ineligible to transfer to the new club. In their statement, Hampstead said that it wouldn’t be the end of the drive to get a women’s team on the paddock though, but ultimately the numbers told the story. “Our decision not to move forward is based on the fact that we needed to show our registered

numbers by the end of November. “Unfortunately our numbers on paper looked good, but our actual registrations said otherwise,” they said. “The team needed some form of a player base that had played before, coupled with new players to the game. We feel going forward we wouldn’t have the number of players that have played the game therefore posing a safety risk to a team new to the game of rugby. “The wellbeing of our players is very important.” In directing those who were keen on being a part of the team, Hampstead advised those still interested to contact the Celtic Rugby Club or the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union. The side was set to be coach by Shaun Bovey and Vaughan Ward. In closing, this week’s statement said the work would continue to get the side up and running in the near future. “We are committed to growing the game the best and will continue to work on a second women’s team in Mid Canterbury in The team who worked hard to get Hampstead’s womens’ rugby team off the ground; Shaun Bovey, Tracey Henderson, Jason Tennant and Vaughan Ward. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 140819-MM-002 the coming years,” they said.

■■INTER DOMINIONS

Ice Man playing it cool By Jonny Turner The chance to capture the race that has got away awaits champion reinsman Tony Herlihy when he drives Sicario in tonight’s Inter Dominion Pacing Championship final. New Zealand’s greatest ever reinsman winning the race on a $101 outsider in his 15th attempt is just one of the fairytale endings this year’s Alexandra Park Championship can bring. Herlihy is approaching the opportunity with the calmness that

M5

has seen him known as The Ice Man for the past four decades, as well as with his signature sharp wit. “It’s a great race to be a part of, you get a good view when you’re out there – its harder when you’re in the crowd, you can’t get a look in,” Herlihy quipped. Herlihy has got the best of views of the three horses that have denied him victory in Australasian pacing’s greatest test of stamina. The reinsman was runner-up with Christopher Vance in 1991, Sly Flyin in 2006 and a promoted

second with Chokin in 1995. “We have gone some great races, but we just haven’t been able to win it. “There have been a couple there that have gone really good. “Sly Flying went great behind Elsu and Christopher Vance went great behind Mark Hanover – he just nutted him out of it.” Sicario’s $101 odds suggest he is not the horse to help Herlihy win his elusive pacing final However, the Brent Lilley-trained pacer goes in to the 2700m mobile feature with one

claim that the five other horses paying $101 do not. The Victorian pacer reeled off the fastest last 800m of the entire Inter Dominion series when reeling off a 52.8sec sectional when running fourth behind Cruz Bromac on night three. The strong performance, when coming from well back in the field, gives Herlihy hope he could land another pacing final placing. Herlihy has had contrasting fortune in Inter Dominion Trotting Finals and will be out to extend his record as its all-time leading

driver with Temporale. The reinsman goes in to the 2700m mobile feature with wins to his name behind Diamond Field (1994), Pride Of Petite (1997), Buster Hanover (1998) and Delft (2006). All Temporale needs is some Ice Man magic to work him in to the race from his second row draw and he will be right amongst the finish. The trotting final has been robbed of a bit of interest with the scratching of Habibi Inta after failing a vet test yesterday morning.

■■RUGBY SEVENS

Dickson marks a major milestone

Connor Brosnahan will be a key figure on the court today.

■■TENNIS

Everything to play for With round two action under way in Mid Canterbury’s open grade tennis action, the chance to make an early break on the competition is open for all sides today. With action set to take a break after this weekend’s games until the 25th of January, there’s everything to play for and everything to lose for all six teams.

Ash Barty

Fairton, who made the most comprehensive of starts to the competition by losing just one of their nine games in the first day of round two against Dorie, will be hoping to carry that form through to this weekend when they take on Allenton. Allenton waited until the final day of play in round one to get their first win of the season but after defeat two weeks ago,

they’ll be keen to get things back on track against a strong looking line-up today. Connor Brosnahan led the way in the No.1 singles spot for Fairton in that victory over Allenton and he will be up for a good challenge today if playing in the same spot against Jason Feutz. Round one winners, Southern, who were narrow victors over

Methven in the first day of play for the second round, will be looking to keep their momentum flowing forward with their clash against Hampstead in the second of the three fixtures today. Meanwhile Methven will be doing battle with a smarting Dorie after their heavy defeat at the hands of Fairton a fortnight ago.

The All Blacks Sevens will be looking for a strong performance in Cape Town this weekend to celebrate Sam Dickson running out for his 50th World Series tournament for the All Blacks Sevens. The Canterbury forward becomes just the sixth player to reach the milestone for the All Blacks Sevens after making his debut in 2012 at Dubai. Coach Clark Laidlaw paid credit to a resilient Dickson, who joins co-captains Scott Curry and Tim Mikkelson as current players to have reached the milestone. “It’s a massive achievement and shows real resilience and consistency to reach 50 tournaments. “It is a huge credit to Sam and the team is really excited to get out there and play with him for his 50th”. A knee injury to Sione Molia sees Akuila Rokolisoa join the playing 12 and a potential debut for William Warbrick who is the travelling reserve. “It’s disappointing to lose Sione but we have a strong squad over here and it gives Akuila a chance to come in and play well.” Laidlaw congratulated Tone Ng Shiu for receiving the Richard Crawshaw Memorial Trophy for Sevens Player of the Year at Thursday night’s ASB Rugby Awards and noted the awards collected by the Black Ferns Sevens. “Tone has had a great year, and he continued that last weekend, being named in the Dream Team in Dubai. Also, the awards that Sarah, Cory, Allan and the Black Ferns Sevens picked up last night is a great acknowledgement for sevens rugby in our country,” said Laidlaw. The All Blacks Sevens opened the HSBC World Series with a second place in Dubai last weekend, thus sit second on the overall standings behind this week’s hosts South Africa. Drawn in Pool B, they will meet Wales and Canada for the second week in a row, and close out pool play against Argentina.

Barty picks up another honour Add another accolade to Ash Barty’s breakthrough 2019: WTA Player of the Year. The Australian was announced this week as the winner of the top year-end award for the women’s professional tennis tour, following her finish at No. 1 in the singles ranking and her first Grand

Slam title at the French Open. Barty won a total of four tournaments and was the only woman to reach the second week at all four major championships this season. She also led the tour with 57 match wins. Her coach, Craig Tyzzer, was

honoured as Coach of the Year. Other winners of voting by media members included US Open champion Bianca Andreescu as top newcomer, Sofia Kenin as most improved player, Belinda Bencic as comeback player and Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic as doubles team of the year.

■■RUGBY

Mooar adds to coaching puzzle By Liam Napier New Zealand Rugby faces the prospect of digging deep into Christmas coffers to finalise Ian Foster’s All Blacks coaching team. The governing body will hope for a swift resolution to a messy situation as they try to prise Brad Mooar away from Scarlets so they can publicly confirm Foster’s team, but it threatens to be a complicated process which is likely to leave the Welsh club and their supporters seriously aggrieved. Mooar had three seasons playing for Mid Canterbury, winning the NPC third division title in 1998. The Herald understands Mooar, the highly-regarded former Crusaders assistant, only told Scarlets bosses of his preference to join the All Blacks and link with Foster within the past two days. Scarlets executives were blindsided by the news and are yet to hear from anyone at New Zealand Rugby. Given the sensitivity of the situation neither organisation has made any public comment on the scrap for Mooar’s services. Mooar is four months into his three-year contract at Scarlets where he has told players, management and supporters of his long-term vision and intention to create a dynasty. Supporters have been moved by Mooar’s immediate passion for the club and easy manner. So much so that some have even gone out to buy cheese-cutter flat caps donned by Mooar since his arrival – those again made popular by the Peaky Blinders hit series. With such a lengthy period remaining on Mooar’s contract, Scarlets are expected to want

Brad Mooar left Scott Robertson at the Crusaders to join Scarlets. significant compensation before agreeing to any release arrangement. If terms are agreed Mooar’s departure will be a body blow to the club so soon after losing Wayne Pivac to the Welsh national team, forcing them to again go through the recruitment process. New Zealand Rugby may argue

Mooar’s coaching abilities were largely honed at home through the Southland, Canterbury and Crusaders ranks but Scarlets will rightly counter that he committed his future to them before being shoulder tapped for the dream job with the All Blacks. The other awkward part of the equation is Wales will travel to

New Zealand for two tests next July and Scarlets boast much of the Welsh test backline. All told the club features 16 Welsh internationals including Lions centre Jonathan Davies, Leigh Halfpenny, Hadleigh Parkes, Gareth Davies, Ken Owens, Samson Lee, Rob Evans and Rhys Patchell.

Former Crusaders outside back Johnny McNicholl, who made his Welsh debut in a non-capped match against the Barbarians last month and forms a big part of future plans, is another key cog for Scarlets. Newly installed Wales coach Pivac is unlikely to be keen on Mooar seeing out this season and hanging around his backyard, only to then jump ship straight into the All Blacks team and coach against those same players. The Mooar situation is yet another example that exposes the folly of the All Blacks appointment process which left Foster and Scott Robertson scrambling late in the piece to assemble their respective coaching teams and led to several other leading candidates committing elsewhere. The Herald has learned Robertson’s pitch to replace Steve Hansen included a coaching team of Crusaders assistant Jason Ryan, Hurricanes assistant Jason Holland and Blues coach Leon MacDonald. Foster won the top job with the backing of Hurricanes coach John Plumtree, former All Blacks prop Greg Feek, Scott McLeod, Mooar and David Hill. Mooar is expected to assume responsibility for the All Blacks backs and attack. The Hurricanes are in a similar situation to Scarlets in that they are negotiating with New Zealand Rugby about whether they will retain Plumtree for the Super Rugby season which starts in fewer than seven weeks. Holland or Wellington coach Chris Gibbes could be asked to step in for Plumtree but, either way, the franchise faces major upheaval.

Savea centre of attention at rugby awards By Christopher Reive

Ardie Savea

When Kiwi rugby fans look back on 2019, it will be remembered for two things – an early All Blacks exit from the Rugby World Cup, and the rise of Ardie Savea. The Hurricanes and All Blacks loose forward took 2019 by storm at both club and country levels, capping off the year being named the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial award for Player of the Year at Thursday night’s New Zealand Rugby Awards. The 26-year-old, who was unable to attend Thursday’s event after undergoing knee surgery earlier in the day, claimed three awards on the night, being named Super Rugby Player of the Year and All Blacks Player of the Year as well as claiming the supreme award. Savea reached a new level of play in 2019, starting eight of the All Blacks’ 10 tests. A monster presence on both sides of the ball, Savea made the

most of his opportunities to display his dominance with ball in hand as well as an impressive ability to secure turnovers at the breakdown. Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson was named National Coach of the Year and said although he was disappointed in missing out on the role as All Blacks head coach, he was looking forward to the upcoming campaign with the Crusaders. “There’s always a natural process as a human, there’s a natural disappointment because I’ve put everything in to it,” Robertson said. “I’m coaching the team I love, where I’ve had a lot of great moments as a player and now as a coach, I’ve got a lot of special bonds and a chance to do something pretty special.” Tyla Nathan-Wong was named Black Ferns Sevens Player of the Year, while skipper Sarah Hirini became the first woman to take home the the Tom French Me-

morial Maori Player of the Year award. Black Ferns Sevens co-coaches Allan Bunting and Cory Sweeney were named New Zealand Coaches of the Year, and the Black Ferns Sevens were crowned the New Zealand Team of the Year for a second consecutive year. 2019 New Zealand Rugby award winners Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Player of the Year: Ardie Savea Richard Crawshaw Memorial All Blacks Sevens Player of the Year Winner: Tone Ng Shiu (Tasman) Black Ferns Player of the Year Winner: Charmaine McMenamin (Auckland) All Blacks Player of the Year Winner: Ardie Savea (Hurricanes) New Zealand Coach of the Year Winner: Cory Sweeney and Allan Bunting (Black Ferns Sevens) New Zealand Team of the Year Winner: Black Ferns Sevens National Coach of the Year Winner: Scott Robertson (Crusaders) Super Rugby Player of the Year Winner: Ardie Savea (Hurricanes)

DEATHS

McGRATH, John Redmond (Johnny) – After 88 years full of fun, laughter and unwavering love we are sad to say that on December 12, 2019, Johnny begun a new journey in life. He tried so very hard to stay and our family were lucky to have some extra special times as we gently released him from our embrace. Simply the best husband, father, grand dad, great grand dad, son, brother, uncle and friend and we were so lucky to have had him in our lives. Marie’s soul mate, partner in crime, best friend and husband for 63 years - two peas in a pod. Best friend, adored, respected and loved Dad to Shona, Bren, Lynnie, Julie, Phil and Jeff. Loved and adored by everyone, he will be missed, but never forgotten. Messages to the McGrath family, c/- PO Box 472, Ashburton 7740. In lieu of flowers donations to Hospice Mid Canterbury would be appreciated and may be left at the service. Johnny will be at Baker Street from 5pm Tuesday evening through to Wednesday afternoon. A vigil/rosary service will be held at the Church of the Holy Name, Sealy Street, Ashburton on Wednesday, December 18 at 5.30pm, followed by the celebration of Johnny’s life at the Hotel Ashburton, Racecourse Road, on THURSDAY, December 19, commencing at 1.30pm. Your Stars

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Don’t underestimate the power of lights and music to set the mood of interactions. Movies have soundtracks; why shouldn’t your relationships? And it’s a joy to assemble the playlist. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): To pay attention once is never enough. You want to take in the whole of a person, but that is always changing. And so, you must keep tending to matter. Love grows. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Sometimes it’s easier for you to accept people who are very different from you than it is to accept people who are similar. You project your wishes or regrets on the latter, perhaps unconsciously until today. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): This problem you are working on seems like it should be a little easier. The reason it’s not is a matter of positioning. You are an integral part of the mystery you are trying to solve. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The ones who succeed aren’t necessarily smarter, more talented or better looking. They’re not even the ones with the most money. The ones who succeed are the ones who never quit. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your contentment depends on recognising where people are in their development and setting your expectations along those lines instead of other invented and unrealistic realms. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Take the time to ramble, wander or stroll because that knotty bit of psychology that’s had you so distracted will get all worked out in the rush of fresh air you’re moving through. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): The best jobs will be the thankless ones. It is when you’re pretty sure no one cares or notices that you will do the most important work of your soul – the work that’s validated purely by your higher self. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You don’t care as much as the others do about being right or sounding like you know what you’re talking about. Maybe that’s why you’re the one everyone wants to sit next to. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your respect for your elders and mentors has been cultivated over time and is now at a high you may wish you had years ago. No one is born with manners. And now it’s your turn to teach them. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Subconscious tendencies can take years to form and won’t change overnight. Love yourself as you are, and coax yourself each step along improvement’s path. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’re a giver, but it’s OK to make people trade you something, too. In fact, that’s when it will become clear how close or far apart you are on the value assessment.
