Family violence: More than stats By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Win DVDP12s

A local family violence campaigner has said while it is good to see an increase in reporting of family violence, statistics are not always reflective of reality. Information released by Police Minister Stuart Nash to Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon shows there has been a 32 per cent increase in family harm investigations in the Mid/South Canterbury police area in just three years. In the first six months of last year alone there were 1018 family harm investigations compared to 1387 in the whole of 2015. Safer Ashburton family violence co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith said stats can be tricky.

“They are not always reflective of reality and what we don’t know. It is possible that the increase is due to both an increase in number of incidents and reporting,” she said. “We hope our awareness campaigns like White Ribbon are having an impact and sending out a message to people that family violence is not okay and encouraging people to access the help that is out there. “When family violence campaign messages are taking effect in our communities we will see an increase in reporting but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there has been an increase in family violence.” Arrowsmith said family violence includes many different forms of un-

healthy abuse such as emotional and physiological that can not be measured and are often unknown. “It does extend past only being physical violence and what we see is a much bigger picture that still needs lots of work done on it,” she said. “Family violence has always and continues to be hidden in our society and I do see that the Government is supporting new initiatives and programmes to help combat this.” Nash said in his written question response to Falloon that the Intergrated Safety Response programme has seen an increase in family harm investigations as trust and confidence in the system has grown and families are enacting their safety plans.

NCEA results out By Heather Mackenzie

Harvesting is really starting to kick into gear across Mid Canterbury.

Harvesters kick into gear By Heather Mackenzie

Sunshine and no strong winds are what Methven cropping farmer Darryl Hydes has requested for the next few weeks of harvest. The Federated Farmers arable chairman said first up for him this harvest season was some non-irrigated barley on his brother’s Highbank farm. Hydes said the strong north-west winds had an impact on the amount of barley produced, but overall they were happy with the result. “The early winds strip the moisture out of the soil and prevent the grains filling-out as much as they could.”

Despite the earlier set-back things were looking positive. “The yield looks to be a good, average one, so that’s pretty good for non-irrigated land.” Also on the harvesting calendar at this time of year is cocksfoot and ryegrass. Both crops are windrowed first and then undercut with a mower. “This is to protect it from the wind. If we didn’t do it that way the seed would all be shaken out before it was ready.” Hydes said after the ryegrass has been cut, there is a 10-to-14 day wait before it will be ready for harvest. This is a tense time for farmers,

strong winds can move the crop around, knocking the seed out and heavy rain can do the same thing. “It’s always a nerve-wracking time once the ryegrass has been mown and we are waiting to harvest it.” Despite the cooler summer temperatures and lack of rain Hydes said both grass seed crops are looking pretty good. Mid Canterbury’s large, flat plains and free-draining soils make this the perfect area for arable farming. Small seed crops – like white clover and grass seed crops, and barley and cereals – like wheat

and ryecorn, all thrive here. Hydes said two-thirds of wheat, barley and the relatively new crop, triticale (a cross between ryecorn and wheat), go into animal feed. “These grains are largely fed to pigs, dairy cows and chickens.” The irony is that, despite excellent conditions and skilled growers, many North Island farmers choose to feed their animals grains imported from Australia. Why? Because it is cheaper for them to do so. High shipping costs and smaller economies of scale make it largely cost-prohibitive for South Island farmers to send their grain north.

Months of waiting finally come to an end yesterday for the 638 students from Mount Hutt College and Ashburton College who were entered for NCEA external assessment. Among the Mid Canterbury students checking their results were Ashburton College students Poppy Kilworth and Sophie Adams. After a patchy night’s sleep Kilworth was up at 8.30am logging on. “The site worked really well and I got on straight away.” The 2020 head girl said she was pleased with her results. “Doing well in sciences means a lot to me as I’m thinking about some kind of science-based career.” Adams, who did equally as well said she too was glad the wait was over. “It has been on my mind over the last few weeks, like hanging over me. Now it’s over I can relax and enjoy the rest of the holidays.” Both girls agreed that doing well in their exams has increased their self-confidence heading into Year thirteen. “We know we can do the harder exams and that is a nice feeling.” Robert Manfield, senior communications advisor at NZQA said there had been no issues for students accessing their online results on what NZQA call their busiest single day of the year, as NCEA results for approximately 140,000 students are released on our website. He pointed out that these results are the culmination of students’ work in 2019. “If a student’s results aren’t quite what they were hoping for, there are several things they can do. NZQA’s website has information about some of the options available for people who need a few more credits, or who missed out on a specific standard they need for a course.”

Fire Museum continues to grow By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

The team behind the Ashburton Fire Museum are thrilled with the number of people coming through the doors and are hoping to add an important piece to their collection at some point this year. The museum is waiting for a 1990s Dennis fire engine, that was with the Ashburton Fire Brigade, to be cycled out of service so that it can be added to the collection, which spokesman Peter McQuarters says they expect to happen sometime this year. “It arrived in New Zealand second-hand and was sent to the Ashburton Fire Brigade and from there it went to Hanmer (Springs) and is now a regional spare,” he said. “We approached FENZ CEO Rhys Jones when he was here to open the museum about getting it here and he undertook to make sure that it would make its way here when it is taken out of service, which we are hoping will be by the middle of the year.” McQuarters said the museum had been fortunate enough to secure many vehicles that had been a part of the brigade’s extensive history, and in the case of some appliances, replaced them with similar models that are as close to what was part of the brigade as possible. Finding appliances around the country that had been part of the brigade was a mix of stealth, luck and digging, he said. Despite many attempts to find an appliance that they believed had ended up in the Waikato they had been unable to locate it. After initially planning to open the museum every Sunday, McQuarters said the decision had been made to open the museum on the same days that the Plains Railway Museum was open. “We will still open anytime

for groups that want to come through, such as schools or service clubs,” he said. The museum is still getting plenty of positive feedback, with a British visitor saying he had been to a number of fire museums in the UK but that this was the best he had seen. “We probably don’t have the biggest collection but we think we’ve done a really good job with what we’ve got,”zhe said.

On Saturday the same stretch of road was closed for four and a-half hours after a three-car collision at the intersection of State Highway 6A and Middleton Road. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a rescue helicopter was called to the scene of a motorcycle crash north of Palmerston. A St John spokesman said they were contacted yesterday afternoon, after a report that a motorcycle had left the road and gone down a bank at Horse Range Road near Trotters Gorge. The rider was believed to have sustained injuries, the nature of which were not yet – NZME known.

A South Auckland homeowner got the shock of their life yesterday afternoon when a boat and a car sailed into the wall of their house. Fire and Emergency NZ northern shift manager Carren Larking said they had had a call about a crash involving a car and a house. “On our arrival there was a car on top of a boat going into the side of the house.” Larking did not know how badly the house was damaged but the homeowner was reportedly “shaken” by the – NZME incident.

Learning all about horses Riding Leggs and enjoying herself at Sarra Woods’ riding holiday programme was nine-year-old Lucy Walker. Over the last two years Woods, from Legacy Equine Services, has been running an equestrian holiday programme. Monday’s class saw the nineteen-yearold take her eight enthusiastic charges though things like proper horse care, how to mount and dismount correctly and the

appropriate riding posture. It’s not all serious learning though. Sarra has a talent for making education fun. Along with lots of riding, the students got to enjoy a water fight. After everybody dried out, the paints were brought out and the decorating of the ponies began. A very tolerant Leggs, twenty-five, and the youngster, six-year-old Elmo, finished the day sporting some bright new body-art.

Woods is no stranger to teaching children to ride. “I run a holiday programme every school holidays,” she said. In the warmer holidays they run up to six days, but in the winter she just takes day classes. “I found in the winter, when the weather is bad, young riders get too cold and would rather sit in the shed.”

Government moves to end whitebait exports NZME The Government is proposing an end to the export of whitebait as part of a set of new rules designed to protect several species of fish. Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage yesterday released a list of planned changes being put up for public consultation, including creating whitebait refuges in some waterways, putting limits on upstream whitebaiting, setting timing for seasons, and standardising rules across the country. It follows the passing of a bill last year that allows restrictions to be put in place on catching at-risk species. Sage said with four of the six species of whitebait currently threatened or at risk of extinction, action needed to be taken. “Whitebait are a cherished part of Kiwi

culture,” she said. “We need to make changes if we want whitebaiting to continue and to maintain a healthy fishery long-term.” Among the proposals is a complete phase-out of export of whitebait at all life stages. New Zealand currently only exports whitebait to a small number of countries across the Pacific and Asia. About 1000 tonnes were sent to Australia, the Cook Islands and Niue in 2018, according to figures from Seafood New Zealand, selling at between $29 to $104 a kilogram. Sage said there was no plan to introduce a licensing system for recreational fishers or to ban commercial sales. Maori customary fishing rights would not be affected either, she said. lations are based on rules already in place on the West Coast. The National Party last year accused the Government of trying to potentially ban whitebaiting with its law change and MP Sarah Dowie launched a petition trying to stop the reforms. Sage dismissed the claims as “mischief-making” and said there were no plans for a ban. In a statement yesterday, Dowie said last year’s changes had already affected the profit of whitebaiters. “National asked the minister to establish a science and evidence-based approach to be followed in regulating or prohibiting the take or management of whitebait but the minister refused,” Dowie said. Public consultation on the new proposals is open until March.

New government for Spain AP Spain’s first coalition government in the four decades since the return of democracy took shape Monday as 22 cabinet ministers took their oaths of office. Questions though remained as to whether the government of two left-wing parties can see out its four-year term as it is a minority administration and confronts an array of vexing issues that could lead to tensions within the coalition. Beyond handling separatist tensions in the economically powerful north-eastern region of Catalonia and recharging what is the fourth largest economy in the eurozone, Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has a tricky task in maintaining the support of his coalition partner, Pablo Iglesias, the leader of the anti-austerity United We Can party. “Either they co-operate or they will open the door to a right-wing coalition supported by the far-right,” said Ana Sofía Cardenal, a political science lecturer with Catalonia’s UOC university. “A failure of the coalition would dent the credibility of United We Can and damage the reputation of the Socialists.” Catalonia is, by far, the biggest immediate problem – and one that will demand unity within the government. Sánchez secured his government last week by two votes, the slimmest majority of any

Spain’s new Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Spanish prime minister in recent decades. He did it thanks to the abstention of 13 members of the pro-Catalan independence ERC party on the promise that he would sit and talk with them about how to resolve Spain’s most serious internal issue since the return to democracy in 1978. The ERC, which has several leading members jailed for an illegal independence push in 2017, insists on self-determination for Catalonia, something the Spanish Constitution and Sánchez rules out. What the Socialists can legal-

ly offer to keep the ERC from voting against the government is still unknown. On the economic front, Spain is still among Europe’s healthy economies. The government’s chief problem is getting a budget through that will satisfy the European Union, investors as well as fulfilling the social promises it has made, from raising pensions to increasing civil servants’ wages and the basic minimum wage. And while Spain has reduced unemployment by around a half over the past few years, at 14 per cent it’s still double the

average across the 19-country eurozone. Sánchez will be mindful that his first attempt at government last year collapsed when the ERC voted down his 2019 spending plan. Sánchez and his chief aides will also have a challenge in maintaining the relationship with United We Can, an upstart party that has got many of its votes from the 140-year-old socialists. When the two parties failed in their first attempt to form a coalition, Sánchez said that neither he nor 95 per cent of Spaniards would be able to sleep at night having Iglesias and his inexperienced colleagues in charge of important ministries. But five months later, Sánchez took many by surprise when days after the November 10 general election he embraced Iglesias on signing a coalition deal. Both parties lost seats in the last election and possibly sensed that a further slide could see a right-wing government take power in Madrid. A major sticking point could be Iglesias’ support for a referendum in Catalonia. Curtailing abusive house rents and accommodating more migrants are two other demands the Socialists may find hard to meet. On Monday, Iglesias said he was behind Sánchez’s goal of “a government that speaks with many voices but always with the same message”.

■■UNITED KINGDOM

Duke and Duchess of Sussex get Queen’s support AP Britain’s pragmatic queen brokered a deal Monday to secure the future of the monarchy, charting a course for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, that allows them to live part time in Canada while still remaining firmly tied to the House of Windsor. The decision followed a summit at Queen Elizabeth II’s Sandringham estate in eastern England that sought to resolve the conundrum of what to do with royals who only want the job part time. The British monarch said in a statement that the summit of senior royals was “constructive,” and that it had been “agreed that there will be a period of transition’’ to sort things out during which Meghan and Harry will spend time in both Canada and the UK. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,’’ the queen said in a statement that offered a demonstrably soft tone. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family

while remaining a valued part of my family.’’ Royal statements are usually sticklers for protocol, but the queen referred to “my grandson and his family” and “Harry and Meghan” rather than using the couple’s formal title, Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The summit marked the first face-to-face talks with Harry since he and Meghan unveiled their controversial wish last week to step back from their royal roles, become financially independent and split their time between Britain and North America. The meeting reflected the queen’s desire to contain the fallout from the independence announcement, which prompted hurt feelings among senior family members not told in ad-

vance of the decision. The House of Windsor was showing signs of pulling together. The queen said after the meeting that these were “complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.” One of the trickier questions that needs to be worked out is precisely what it means for a royal to be financially independent and what activities can be undertaken to make money. Other royals who have ventured into the world of commerce have found it complicated. Harry and Meghan also face questions about paying for security, which is currently

taxpayer-funded. Meghan, who is American, has longstanding ties to Canada, having lived in Toronto while filming the popular TV series, Suits. Last week she returned to Canada, where the couple and 8-month-old Archie spent a sixweek holiday break out of the public eye. Bob Morris, honorary senior research associate at University College London’s Constitution Unit, said that the crux of the matter lies in the difference between being a celebrity and having royal status. Some of the challenges are enshrined in the law devised some 20 years ago after an inquiry that followed the Countess of Wessex’ brush with a fake sheikh. The rules are aimed at ensuring working royals do not exploit their status to profit in business. Under the guidelines, the royals must consult the most senior member of the royal household before taking on a business activity – a measure that would encroach on Harry and Meghan’s independence. Last week’s statement by the couple pushed the issue out into the open and touched off a royal crisis. With much at stake, the queen’s decision safeguarded the peace – for now.

Norton to be new Bond? James Norton is reportedly the front runner to be the next James Bond. The 34-year-old actor is believed to be in the running to take on the iconic 007 role after Daniel Craig departs from the long running movie franchise following the release of No Time To Die in April this year. Norton has reportedly been involved in secret meetings with the franchise’s producers, including film chief Barbara Broccoli, and is now the favourite to bag the role, according to bookmakers. A source told media: “Numerous meetings and secret squirrel script readings were had at the back end of last year.”

‘Quite a big deal’ Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit is up for six awards at this year’s Oscars, and the New Zealander has shared his reaction to the news. Speaking to media, Waititi said: “It’s been one of the (only) Monday mornings where I felt like I wanted to wake up”. He says the phone has been “blowing up” since the news broke. “I’ve had eight texts. It’s been incredible. “Eight whole texts! All of them are from my mum,” he said. Jojo Rabbit is about a young boy in Nazi Germany who has Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi, as his imaginary friend. The director said: “I’m from New Zealand, so we try not to take anything seriously, but this is quite a big deal.”

Actress worked for ANZ Before she hit the big time, American actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish was an Air New Zealand employee who liked to dance with passengers, according to her former boss, Sacramento-based Kiwi Rodney Samuels. Appearing on US talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Haddish was reunited with Samuels who was dialled in as a surprise guest from Haddish’s past. The Like A Boss star recognised him from a lineup of strangers but couldn’t recall his name. “I do not remember his name. I know I used to be like, ‘Heyyyy’,” she told Kimmel giggling. “His laugh. I know that laugh and his smile.”

OUR VIEW

Lots to say but no one’s saying it I

f you’ve been following the news of the latest battles with the Royal Family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wishes to relinquish some of their requirements as members of the family, you’ll notice that a lot of people have a lot to say. But there’s always been a bit of a problem with that. A lot of what’s being said, isn’t officially being said by the people who are supposed to be saying it. And thus, welcome to the world of reporting on the Royals. In a somewhat magazine type style, so much of what is said and written about the most famous family in the world, is often said through the mouth of a declared “royal expert” or a

“royal witness” or source “close to the royal couple”. And in the wake of Harry and Meghan’s announcement last week, there’s been a whole lot said, but not a lot of it officially. Yes, we’ve had the odd-statement here and there, but very little actual information coming direct from a member of the family. Just potential hearsay, and

perhaps, the odd person trying to make themselves seem a little more important than they actually are by telling anyone who will listen what they’ve dreamed up. It can make it hard to follow – and does leave the overhanging question of the validity of what you’re actually reading, but it’s just the way it works when it comes to the Royals. It’s yet to happen, but you’d throw down your last dollar on the fact that, one day soon, we’ll hear from a former royal employee who will talk about the growing rift between members of the family and all of a sudden centimetres of column space will be taken up speculating on those very comments.

In some ways, it’s a little bit ridiculous. Yet so many people seem glued to it and thrive on the information being shared. Why? A family is having a few troubles. The family business isn’t quite going the way for them that they hoped it might and so they’ve decided to relinquish their role within that business. Happens all the time in modern society, doesn’t it? The only difference from modern day life is that it’s one of the most public families in the world, whose every step is monitored and detailed for the entire world to know and therefore, this latest kerfuffle will end up being one of the biggest stories

in the royal family’s history, once everything has been said and done. Eventually the dust will settle and the prince and the actress will ride off into the Canadian sunset to take up their own place in the world and do their own thing, away from the restrictions and structures that are in place. And then, it’s only a matter of time until the next round of shenanigans, where someone will say or do something they shouldn’t and all of a sudden the whole world will be back watching every step with an interested eye. And all of a sudden those royal experts and royal sources will step out of the woodwork once again.

In 1993, a historic disarmament ceremony ended in Paris with the last of 125 countries signing a treaty banning chemical weapons. In 2014, a highly critical and bipartisan Senate report declared that the deadly September 2012 assault on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, could have been prevented; the report spread blame among the State Department, the military and US intelligence.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, January 15, the 15th day of 2020. There are 351 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On January 15, 2009, US Airways Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger ditched his Airbus 320 in the Hudson River after a flock of birds disabled both engines; all 155 people aboard survived. On this date: In 1559, England’s Queen Elizabeth I was crowned in Westminster Abbey. In 1865, as the Civil War neared its end, Union forces captured Fort Fisher near Wilmington, North Carolina, depriving the Confederates of their last major seaport. In 1892, the original rules of basketball, devised by James Naismith, were published for the first time in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game originated. In 1919, in Boston, a tank containing an estimated 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst, sending the dark syrup coursing through the city’s North End, killing 21 people. In 1929, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta. In 1943, work was completed on the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of War (now Defense). In 1970, United States VicePresident Spiro Agnew’s threeday visit to New Zealand sparked some of the most violent antiVietnam War demonstrations seen in this country. In 1973, President Richard M. Nixon announced the suspension of all US offensive action in North Vietnam, citing progress in peace negotiations. In 1976, Sara Jane Moore was sentenced to life in prison for her attempt on the life of President Gerald R. Ford in San Francisco. (Moore was released on the last day of 2007.)

Plastic straws are being phased out around the world, but not everywhere is following the trend.

The war on plastic straws By Tim Roxborough

I

Tim Roxborogh asks – who needs stirring straws anyway?

t feels like forever ago that we launched the war on plastic. It’s been such a dominant part of our public discourse that surely it has to be longer than July 1 last year that we got rid of single-use plastic bags at supermarkets? Have I been pinged for forgetting my reusable bags for only six months? As for plastic straws, Kiwi businesses were so swift at voluntarily ditching them that it’s easy to forget it was only 2018 where, arguably, the tipping point – of being an outsider if you still used plastic straws – was reached. Now hardly anywhere in New Zealand has them. “New Zealand” being the keyword in that previous sentence. On a recent trip to the States,

NEW

there was barely a beverage ordered that didn’t come with those pointless, narrow little plastic stirring straws. I never understood those straws even pre straw-wokeness. If the drink so needed stirring, why not just give it a whirl or two with a spoon before giving it to the customer? And, if the purpose of the straw was primarily the delivery of liquid from the glass to the mouth of the consumer, then why were they so gosh-darn un-girthy? Never mind that a fail-safe way to look measurably less masculine was to find yourself absentmindedly crafting a whirlpool in your beverage with a miniature straw while

attempting conversation with strangers. The most jarring mini plastic straw incident in the States a couple of months ago came just before I flew out of JFK Airport in New York. I ordered a cup of tea while my three friends all ordered coffees. Each beverage came with two mini plastic straws or eight for the whole group. And given these are hot drinks, no one’s doing any slurping. So no less than eight single-use straws were handed out for the purpose of stirring – a task I’m fairly certain a spoon capable of thousands upon thousands of uses would’ve been up for. As of 2018, the UN estimated that by count, plastic straws

accounted for 4 per cent of all marine waste in the world. By weight, it was thought that all those straws added up to two million kilograms that were dumped in our planet’s oceans every year. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take no straw or a soggy paper straw over that any day. Westpac offers mortgage payments NZME

Customers who took out a mortgage with Westpac who have lost their homes will have one year worth of repayments, up to $1200 per month, paid for by the company. PHOTO SUPPLIED worth up to $2000 for customers whose properties have been destroyed or damaged by the bushfires. The announcement comes as cooler temperatures and rain

helped slow out-of-control fires in Victoria and NSW. Fire assessors have been escorted by the military into the cut-off town of Mallacoota as Victoria counts the cost of the

devastating blazes. The convoy of defence vehicles travelled from Orbost to Mallacoota in East Gippsland on Monday, with the road still closed to normal traffic because of the

New Zealand residential construction has reached a 45-year high, running at a pace not seen since 1974. Statistics NZ said a record number of consents were issued for 37,010 new houses in the year to November 2019, “the highest in a year since the mid-1970s”. There were 37,919 new homes consented in the year ended September 1974. The number of new homes consented has been generally increasing since late 2011, coming off lows in 2009 and 2011 when fewer than 14,000 new homes were consented annually, StatsNZ said.

1980 were stand-alone houses, 722 were townhouses, flats and units, 291 were apartments and 211 were retirement village units. The value of non-residential building consents for the November 2019 year was $7.4 billion, up 4.9 per cent from the November 2018 year. That $7.4b included $1b in education buildings, $1b in shops, restaurants and bars and $981m in offices, administration and public transport buildings. To cope with the rise in house construction levels, Fletcher Building late last year opened a house-building factory in Auckland. That business plans to build more than 1000 new homes annually.

Business confidence is improving, an NZIER survey shows, although firms remain cautious about their own activity. The Institute of Economic Research’s (NZIER) quarterly survey shows a smaller proportion of businesses expected general economic conditions to get worse. A net 26 per cent expected conditions to deteriorate in the last three months of the year, versus 35 per cent in the September quarter. The outlook for firms’ own trading activity, which provides a better indication of demand in the New Zealand economy, remained soft however.

Firms remained cautious about hiring and investment when it comes to expansion plans, although they were more positive about hiring intentions over the next three months. Hawke’s Bay was the only region where optimists outnumbered pessimists. Other regions were downbeat, with over 40 per cent of businesses expecting a worsening in economic conditions. Manufacturers were more upbeat than the service sector, with an improving global outlook. The NZIER said there were signs the manufacturing sector profitability was turning around.

Westpac has offered to pay one year off the mortgages for customers who lost their homes in this season’s bushfires. The acting chief executive of the big four bank, Peter King, made the announcement this week as Australians continue to be affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis. Customers who took out their mortgage through Westpac will have repayments up to $A1200 per month paid for over a period of one year. “These initiatives are designed to provide practical, on the ground support for our customers, our people and for those who are caring for affected communities,” King said in a statement sent to news.com.au. “In times of such unprecedented devastation, we want customers and communities to know we’re here to help alleviate financial concerns so they can rebuild their lives, homes and businesses,” King said. The initiative adds to what Westpac is already doing, including offering emergency grants

bushfire damage. Assessors from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade were in the convoy, tasked with gauging the extent of damage to buildings and infrastructure. Elsewhere in Victoria, communities along the Monaro Highway were urged to “act immediately” when an out of control fire moved towards the road near Kate’s Creek. NSW firefighters and weather forecasters are cautious ahead of much-needed rain forecast for the state this week. Rain is expected for much of the state from yesterday, including fire grounds across the Snowy Mountains, southwest of Sydney and south coast regions. But the NSW Rural Fire Service warned that because much of the rain would come with thunderstorms, downfalls could be patchy and there was no guarantee they would extinguish the 105 fires burning across the state on Monday night. The Bureau of Meteorology said it was difficult to predict exactly how much rain would fall because the downpours will be inconsistent.

Treat yourself this summer R

aspberries are one of summer’s absolute treats. They’re easy to grow in the backyard if you have a spare few metres of fence and if the crop is abundant, they’re an easy freeze for use during the winter. While they’re great eaten straight from the canes or with cream and icing sugar, raspberries are great in baking, desserts and they can do double duty with meat if you’re adventurous.

Raspberry muffins 60g butter 200g plain flour 2t baking powder 1/2 t baking soda 150g caster sugar Pinch salt 120ml milk 1 large egg 150g raspberries

Chocolate and raspberry brownie

Raspberry sorbet

200g dark chocolate, broken into chunks 100g milk chocolate squares, broken into chunks 250g pack salted butter 400g soft light brown sugar 4 large eggs 140g plain flour 50g cocoa powder 200g raspberries ■■ Heat oven to 180°C. ■■ Line a 20 x 30cm baking tray tin with baking paper. ■■ Put the chocolate, butter and sugar in a pan. ■■ Gently melt, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. ■■ Remove from the heat. ■■ Stir the eggs, one by one, into the melted chocolate mixture. ■■ Sieve over the flour and cocoa, and stir in. ■■ Stir in half the raspberries, scrape into the tray. ■■ Scatter over the remaining raspberries. ■■ Bake on the middle shelf for 30 mins or, if you prefer a firmer texture, for 5 mins more. ■■ Cool before slicing into squares. ■■ Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

200g granulated sugar 500g raspberries, plus more to serve 1 lemon, juiced ■■ Put the sugar and 270ml water in a saucepan over a low heat. ■■ Stir until the sugar has dissolved. ■■ Raise the heat and simmer for 5 mins, or until the liquid has become a syrup. ■■ Set aside to cool. ■■ Put the raspberries and lemon juice in a food processor and blitz until smooth. ■■ Strain through a fine sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds. ■■ Combine with the sugar syrup, then pour into freezer-proof container. ■■ Freeze for 1 hr 30 mins. ■■ Whisk with a balloon whisk or a fork to break up any ice crystals that have formed and return to the freezer. ■■ Keep mixing the sorbet once an hour for 4hrs to break up the ice crystals. ■■ Stop mixing when firm but scoopable. ■■ Will keep in the freezer for up to a month. Serve with extra raspberries.

■■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■■ Melt the butter in the microwave and set it aside to cool. ■■ In a large bowl, stir together the flour, the baking powder, the bicarb, sugar and salt. ■■ Beat together the milk, the egg and the melted butter. ■■ Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until combined. ■■ Fold in the raspberries, but don’t overmix. ■■ Put paper cases in a muffin tray. Then, spoon the mixture in. ■■ Bake for 25 mins.

Raspberry mousse 500g fresh raspberries 2 egg yolks 1/3 C (75g) caster sugar 2t gelatine 2T water 1C (250ml) thickened cream ■■ Push half the berries through a sieve; discard seeds. ■■ Beat egg yolks and sugar in a small bowl with electric mixer until pale and thick; fold in raspberry puree. ■■ Sprinkle gelatine over the water in small heatproof jug. ■■ Stand jug in a small saucepan of simmering water, stirring, until gelatine dissolves. Cool 5 minutes and stir into berry mixture. ■■ Beat cream in small bowl with electric mixer until soft peaks form; fold into berry mixture. ■■ Pour mixture into four 1C dessert glasses and refrigerate 3 hours or until set. Serve with remaining raspberries and whipped cream.

Raspberry and chocolate pudding 100g butter, softened 120g caster sugar 3 eggs 120g self-rising flour 2T cocoa 1/2 C natural yoghurt 1C frozen raspberries, plus extra thawed out for garnishing 80ml cream 80g chocolate buttons 4 scoops ice cream, to serve 2 sprigs of mint, for garnishing ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Lightly grease 4 ramekins or 200ml cups. ■■ Cut pieces of baking paper and put into the bottom. ■■ Beat butter and sugar until light and creamy. ■■ Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. ■■ Sift in the flour and cocoa. ■■ Add yoghurt and stir to combine. ■■ Fold through raspberries gently. ■■ Spoon mixture into the moulds or cups and smooth the top. ■■ Place into a deep baking dish and add 2cm warm water. ■■ Cover whole baking tray with baking paper and then tin foil, tucking it in tightly. ■■ Place into the oven for 3540 mins until just set in the middle. ■■ Remove tin foil and baking paper. ■■ Let puddings sit for 10 mins before tipping out. ■■ Sauce: Bring cream to the boil in a small pot. ■■ Pour over chocolate buttons and stir until smooth and creamy.

Raspberry tiramisu 6 egg yolks 175g caster sugar 300ml pot double cream 2 250g tubs mascarpone 1T vanilla extract 150ml marsala or sweet wine 24 sponge fingers 350g raspberries Icing sugar, to dust ■■ Place a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water with the egg yolks and the sugar in, whisk until pale, creamy and doubled in volume. ■■ Remove from the heat and whisk for another 1 min until cool. ■■ In another bowl beat the cream, mascarpone and vanilla until combined, thick and creamy. ■■ Fold or very gently whisk this mixture into the creamy yolks. ■■ Dip half the sponge fingers into the marsala and arrange over the bottom of a serving dish. ■■ Pour over half of the creamy mixture, then top with most of the raspberries. ■■ Repeat the layers, then finish by dotting over the remaining raspberries. ■■ Cover and chill for at least 2 hrs. ■■ Dust the tiramisu with icing sugar just before serving in big bowls.

Freezing is one of the best ways to preserve raspberries, because it does not reduce the nutrient content. And raspberries have plenty to preserve – 1C of frozen red raspberries is an excellent source of vitamin C and fibre.

Once the butter is melted, or the oil is heated (being careful to watch the oil doesn’t get too hot as it will spit), bring the temperature to a medium heat and carefully lay the fish fillets into the pan. Cook the fillets on both sides, carefully turning once, until the flesh turns just white. ■■ Serve the fish with a generous helping of the salsa spooned over the fillets.

■■ Tip: Cut into one of the fillets once seared on one side, while cooking. Watch for the fillet to begin to turn white in the middle, and remove from the heat as soon as this occurs (the middle can remain slightly translucent). This ensures the fish will remain tender and succulent and fall apart into medium flakes when eaten. Recipe courtesy of www. seafood.co.nz Seafood New Zealand

Halberg finalists announced RNZ The Silver Ferns shape as the leading contenders for the Supreme Halberg Award after the finalists were revealed. The netballers, who won the world cup in England last year against the odds, head the team of the year finalists alongside Black Ferns Sevens, the World Cup finalist the Black Caps and two rowing crews – the women’s double of Olivia Loe and Brooke Donoghue and the Women’s Eight. Silver Ferns captain Laura Langman is among the Sportswoman of the Year finalists, along with last year’s winner canoe racer Lisa Carrington. The other finalists are Zoi Sadowski-Synnott who produced New Zealand’s first Snowboarding World Championships gold medal and motocross world champion Courtney Duncan. The Sportsman of the Year award is a tight contest. 2018 supreme Halberg Award winner Tom Walsh heads the list of Sportsman of the Year finalists and is joined by V8 supercar championship and Bathurst winner Scott McLaughlin, UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Black Caps captain Kane Williamson. Six time winner Sophie Pascoe is again a finalist in the para athlete and team category having won four gold medals at the World Para Swimming Championships. Pascoe is joined by fellow para swimmer Cameron Leslie along with the wheelchair rugby team the Wheel Blacks. ■■RUGBY

World Rugby to trial new laws in Super Rugby RNZ World Rugby have introduced a set of law amendments which will be trialled at various tournaments, including Super Rugby, in a bid to improve player safety and reduce the risk of injuries. The trials were approved for the four-year law amendment review cycle that began after the 2019 World Cup following an analysis by the Law Review Group last March and several unions expressed interest in operating one or more of the trials. Preventing dangerous high tackles remains a high priority for World Rugby as they look to reduce the number of concussions. The High Tackle Technique Warning, which was trialled at the World Rugby U20 Championship and reduced concussions by more than 50 per cent, will now

Bill Beaumont, World Rugby chairman be trialled in the Super Rugby championship which begins on January 31 and also the Top 14 in France. “While the recent Rugby World Cup demonstrated a slight de-

crease in injury rates and a 30 per cent reduction in concussions owing to the implementation of evidence-based injury prevention programmes, we can and must do more to reduce in-

juries at all levels,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said in a statement. “We’ve already seen hugely encouraging initial outcomes and feedback from Australia’s National Rugby Championship and are delighted to have such a broad range of elite and community leagues running trials thanks to the support of our unions and regions.” Reducing the tackle height to the waist is also part of the package of law amendments in a bid to reduce injuries to both the tackled player and tackler while also encouraging more offloads. Teams will also have the opportunity to review yellow cards for players sent to the sin bin so that those guilty of dangerous foul play are rightly awarded a red card instead of a yellow. The Law Review Group will

reconvene in March to review the trials’ results before making recommendations to the Rugby Committee. The other amendments to be trialled across the globe are: 50:22 kick – If the team in possession kicks the ball from inside their own half indirectly into touch inside their opponents’ 22 or from inside their own 22 into their opponents’ half, they will throw in to the resultant lineout. The introduction of an infringement (penalty and freekick) limit for teams. Once a team has reached the limit, a mandatory yellow card is given to the last offending player as a team sanction. The awarding of a goal-line drop-out to the defending team when an attacking player, who brings the ball into in-goal, is held up.

In brief Coach announcements England rugby coach Eddie Jones has appointed former South Africa assistant Matt Proudfoot and Englishman Simon Amor as his new assistant coaches ahead of this year’s Six Nations tournament. Proudfoot, a former Scotland international who helped South Africa win the World Cup last year before his contract as assistant coach ended, will replace Steve Borthwick as England’s forward coach, with the latter becoming the skills coach. Amor, who was head coach of the England Men’s Sevens and the Great Britain Sevens which won silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016, comes in as attack coach.

Valiant effort from U15 boys The Mid Canterbury Under 15 Boys’ softball side produced some outstanding results at the national championships in Paraparaumu last week, finishing 12th out of 17 teams. The young charges headed north full of optimism and confidence, but suffered the worst possible start to the tournament when they lost both of their opening day encounters, beaten by Hawkes Bay in the morning and then North Harbour in the

afternoon. That opening day threatened to derail the remainder of the tournament, but to their credit the young side bounced back first thing on Friday morning to register a dominant performance and get things back on track when they took down Tairawhiti, winning 15-5. That afternoon they extended things even further when they beat Mainland bedfellows, Upper South Island 12-6 to put

them in a position to push for higher honours in the tournament. It very nearly became a reality too. Playing Western Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning, the group pushed hard and took their fixture to seven innings, only to lose out narrowly 9-10 in what was described as a thrilling encounter to watch by those who were there. A tough loss to a slick Mana-

watu side on Saturday afternoon meant that aspirations of making the top half of the competition were out the window but a play-off match against Waikato loomed on the final day on Sunday. Unfortunately, that result didn’t go their way either – with the side officially finishing 12th in the tournament – a good result for a small association up against some of the big players in New Zealand softball.

Rising Australian cyclist Chris Hamilton will miss the Tour Down Under after suffering a freak injury in a training crash – rupturing one of his testicles. The 24-yearold Sunweb rider posted the eye-watering injury bulletin on Instagram, saying: “Fellas it’s just as painful as you think it is. I had a small crash in training. I wish I could say I was doing something gnarly, but no, just on a bike path,” he said. “Nothing broken but since someone is going to ask what I did anyway, I ruptured a testicle.”

Managers suspended Major League Baseball suspended the manager and general manager of the Houston Astros for one year after an investigation found the team cheated by stealing signs during their World Series-winning 2017 season, the league said on Monday. The league said the Astros will pay a $7.5 million fine to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s office and also forfeit their first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. Astros manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow are suspended without pay through the completion of the 2020 World Series, and during this period each are prohibited from performing any services on behalf of the Astros.

■■CRICKET

Auckland cricket fan banned for racial abuse NZME The man responsible for racially abusing England cricketer Jofra Archer at the Bay Oval has been banned from attending international and domestic fixtures in New Zealand for two years. Archer was targeted by racial abuse on the final day of the first test between England and New Zealand in November, eventuating in a complaint being laid with Tauranga police. As a result of their inquiries, police have spoken to a 28-yearold Auckland man who subsequently admitted responsibility for the abuse. He was issued with a verbal warning for using insulting language. NZC have since contacted the man and have also written to him, advising of his ban from all international and domestic fixtures in New Zealand until 2022. NZC spokesman Anthony Crummy said if the man

English cricket star, Jofra Archer. breached the conditions of his ban and attended a fixture he would be removed from the venue and could become subject to

further police action. “We’d again like to extend our apologies to Jofra and the England team management for such

an unsavoury incident and reiterate once more that this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable.” Crummy said NZC would continue to lobby fiercely against offensive language and/or behaviour, with anti-racist messages posted on signs around the grounds, on the big screen, and delivered by ground-announcers. In addition, spectators at all venues would be encouraged to use NZC’s text alert system to notify ground security of any anti-social behaviour, including racist taunts and abuse. “We want to thank the NZ Police for their efforts in identifying the person responsible, and for making it clear that this type of behaviour will not be minimised.” Crummy said NZC would not be disclosing the identity of the offender, nor information that might lead to his identification.

Former world number one Angelique Kerber swept past the challenge from China’s Wang Qiang 6-1 6-3 to pick up her first win of the year at the inaugural Adelaide International. The 2016 Australian Open champion was defeated in the opening round at Brisbane last week by Samantha Stosur but dominated her Chinese opponent from the outset. The Adelaide tournament, which kicked off on Sunday, is a combined ATP and WTA event that replaces the Sydney International, which was dropped from the calendar to accommodate the ATP Cup.

Bushfire pledges The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and three Grand Slams – Wimbledon, US Open and French Open – have collectively pledged $400,000 to Australian bushfire relief efforts, the sport’s international governing body said. Twenty-eight people have been killed and thousands made homeless in recent months as huge fires scorched through 11.2 million hectares. The money will be donated to the Australian Red Cross which has helped thousands in evacuation centres and aided volunteers and relief workers.

■■TIMARU RACES

Locals out looking for glory By Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

A large, and strong, contingent of Mid Canterbury trained horses will head down the State Highway today in search of success at the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Phar Lap Raceway. Distinguishing just one or two of the best chances from the locals to make the trek south is a difficult task with leading contenders lining up in almost all of the 11 races on the programme. The day should start well. Terry McMillan’s smart trotter Steel Dust was excellent running second at his last start at Rangiora and while still getting it all together on the track, on raw ability he’s a leading contender today. At the other end of the spectrum, the Michael Heenan trained Superfast Lad boasts plenty of experience and with six placings in his last 10 starts, must be eventually rewarded with a victory at short notice. Laurence Hanrahan lines up the first of one of his three chances in the second of the day with Strong Enough. A good seventh fresh last week on the same course, he gets barrier one today and should be on the speed and right in contention. Hanrahan has strong chances later in the day with Ultimate Rocker and Pembrook Legacy, both of whom look likely prospects in their respective races during the latter stages of the day. Leo O’Reilly will also head to the meeting with three winning prospects on the float. Ageless trotter Jerry Garcia drops back in ratings again and off the front tape might be able to give all his rivals plenty to think about with his take-no-prisoners racing approach while pacers Shadow Minister and Darryl Kerrigan are both in good enough form to be considered leading

Laurence Hanrahan will take three strong chances to Timaru today. hopes in their races too. Raewyn Low will be hoping that a bad marble isn’t enough to stop her in-form pacer Missmollygoodgolly in the fourth race of the day. Second last weekend behind a very talented pacer the four-year-old mare has drawn 18, but does possess good speed which should see her right in the fight at some point. Lawrence McCormick takes the reins on Missmollygoodgolly and has a strong chance with the Hanrahan trained pacer, Ultimate Rocker as well as he searches for the 50th New Zealand driving win of his career.

Ashburton Racecourse-based trainer, Brent White will take smart pacer Burlington down to the meeting for the junior drivers’ event and entrust Mikayla

Lewis to get the job done on the big gelding. White also has the talented, but enigmatic, Rogie Falls engaged later in the day.

Mark Purdon has plenty of thinking to do. Emerging star Self Assured is the best horse in Saturday night’s Group 1 Ballarat Cup, but he’s drawn the trickiest barrier – inside the back row (gate eight). He’s already drifted from $2.50 opening price to $2.60 with the Aussie TAB. Self Assured is one of two runners Purdon and Rasmussen have in their quest for a fifth successive Ballarat Cup win. Smolda won in 2016 and 17, Heaven Rocks in 2018 and Thefixer last year. Purdon will drive Self Assured with Rasmussen aboard last-start brilliant Cambridge winner Chase Auckland (gate five, $5). Purdon’s big decision is whether to stay on the inside and risk being pocketed, or snag right back at the start and give away a huge head start to his rivals. The other Kiwi raider, dual Auckland Inter Dominion heat winner AG’s White Socks, is drawn to use his gate speed and possibly lead from gate four. He’s firmed from $5 to $4.60. Australia’s top trainer Emma Stewart has four of the 12 runners – Tam Major (gate one, $15), The Storm Inside (two, $6), Demon Delight (six, $18) and Phoenix Prince (nine, $13) – as well as the emergency, Somewhere Secret (gate three, $71). “It’s great to have such a strong hand in our hometown cup and all of them are at the top of their game,” Stewart said. Tim Butt’s former Miracle Mile winner My Field Marshal is a surprise Ballarat Cup runner after WA Cup plans were shelved because of ongoing plane issues. He’s a $21 shot from a horror outside back row draw (13).

Enzo’s Lad eyeing Telegraph three-peat NZ Racing Desk Enzo’s Lad will attempt to become the third horse in history to win three Gr.1 Telegraph’s at Trentham on Saturday. The son of Testa Rossa has won the last two editions of the JR & N Berkett-sponsored race and trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman are hopeful of adding to that tally this weekend. “It’s going to be a good field as per usual and hopefully he will be cherry ripe by Saturday,” Michael Ptiman said. “When he won it the first year I don’t think he got the credit

M2

he deserved. “The second time around proved that it wasn’t a fluke. If he won it three years in a row it would be a massive effort.” Since last year’s victory, Enzo’s Lad has collected a few frequent flyer points, having campaigned in both Hong Kong and the United Kingdom at the famed Royal Ascot meeting. Enzo’s Lad finished unplaced in all three runs and Pitman said signs of the travel are still showing on the seven-year-old. “He’s been hanging on to a winter coat, which sounds strange given we are in the middle of summer, but when we got

to England he had grown a winter coat leading into their summer, so we had to clip him. “While he has been hanging on to his winter coat I have seen a lot of improvement in the last fortnight.” Although Enzo’s Lad has tailed the field home in two of his three starts back in New Zealand this term, Pitman said he needs firm ground in order to produce his best effort. Pitman has taken a different approach with Enzo’s Lad this year, electing to bring him north a week before his Wellington assignment.

“He is up here (Trentham) at the moment,” Pitman said. “We have done things a bit different because he is an older horse. I brought him up with the horses we raced on the first day just to do something different with him. “We are really happy with the horse.” The Riccarton conditioners will also contest the race with fellow sprinter Sensei who dead-heated for third in last year’s Telegraph. “Sensei is an extremely good galloper, he’s probably the fastest horse we have had anything to do with,” Pitman said.

“Last year he drew near enough the outside barrier. His run the other day (finishing third in the Hazlett Stakes) was firstclass. “He’s a duffer on a wet track, but he managed to run third at Dunedin and went absolutely super.” The Dream Ahead gelding will go into Saturday in good form, having won the Listed Pegasus Stakes and finished runner-up in the Stewards Stakes Handicap. “Sensei is going really well, we are really happy with him, but he will also need to have a firm track,” Pitman said.

All Blacks, AIG partnership nears end NZME

Wednesday cricket’s back By Matt Markham

Mid Canterbury’s new-look summer cricket competition returns to the wicket tonight and it’s full steam ahead toward the play-offs following the first stage of the season prior to Christmas. After more than two months of play, the eight sides competing in the competition – which is played in an 18-over format on a Wednesday night – have been split into two separate sections for the remainder of the season, with three more weeks of play, before the knockout stages of the compe-

tition begin on February 5. Three teams finished the first half of the season equal on points with Allenton Wanderers, Methven and Lauriston all picking up four wins each to top the table. Allenton Progressive Livestock snuck into the top four courtesy of a better net run rate than Coldstream Kings who they finished on equal points with. That leaves Coldstream Kings, Allenton The Phat Duck, Rakaia and Coldstream Old Boys all in the second section of the competition. With competition getting back into gear

tonight – early success will go a long way towards teams finishing in the more favoured positions in three weeks’ time. When it comes to the finals tonight in section one, Lauriston will host Methven and there will be an all-Allenton affair when the Wanderers take on Progressive Livestock. In section two matches, Rakaia and Coldstream Old Boys will do battle on the Flying Fox wicket at the Ashburton Domain, while Coldstream Kings will host The Phat Duck Allenton on the Coldstream Oval.

New Zealand Rugby and the All Blacks are parting ways with AIG as a major sponsor. The American insurance company has been a sponsor of New Zealand Rugby since 2012, with the initial five-year deal worth a reported $80m. AIG renewed the multi-million dollar contract in 2016, retaining its central spot on the All Blacks jersey until the end of the 2021 season. The current sponsorship agreement sees AIG directly sponsor the All Blacks, the All Blacks Sevens, the Maori All Blacks, the Black Ferns, the New Zealand Black Ferns Sevens and New Zealand Under 20 teams. NZR Chief Executive Mark Robinson said the international insurance giant was giving both organisations ample time to prepare for new opportunities in the future. “We have enjoyed a hugely successful and mutually beneficial commercial partnership that has helped both AIG and NZR to strengthen our respective brands on the world stage. “Through this partnership, NZR and the six national teams sponsored by AIG have been able to grow rugby’s presence in new and growing markets, with opportunities to play in new territories and introduce our teams to new fans all over the world,” Robinson said. “Lengthy commercial partnerships such as this are unusual, and the lead-in time provided means NZR is very well placed to attract new sponsors,” Robinson said. “AIG has been a special partner not only because of their presence on the front of the treasured black jersey, but because they have been a leading voice on social issues that are dear to NZR and to our athletes. “We are proud that New Zealand Rugby players were the faces of their #EffortisEffort and #DiversityIsStrength campaigns, promoting positive social messages and equality on and off the sporting field. Such campaigns have received a number of accolades, including being recognised at prestigious international advertising ceremonies. “We will continue to work with AIG through another exciting period for our teams – with both the men’s and women’s sevens teams seeking gold at the Tokyo Olympics later in 2020, and the Black Ferns heading into the Rugby World Cup 2021 as defending champions and the tournament’s host nation,” Robinson said.

■■TENNIS

Federer ready for battle at the Australian Open RNZ Roger Federer has declared himself ready to kick off the new season at next week’s Australian Open despite having played no competitive matches since November. The 20-times Grand Slam winner was scheduled to warm-up for the year’s first major at the inaugural ATP Cup in Australia but withdrew to spend more time with his family. In contrast his rivals, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal, were part of some closely-fought matches at the team event, which

was played in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. Federer, 38, said he was happy with his preparation at home. “I’ve trained long and hard in the off-season and I didn’t have any setbacks, which is crucial,” Federer said at a promotional event in Melbourne. “Last week I was asking myself ‘am I happy to go to Australia, or I should rather just stay here and stopping pack immediately?’ Because I can. “I could easily just stay home and I was like, ‘no, no, I’m really happy to go to Melbourne and kick off the season there’.

“I have kept myself in good shape, obviously I had an amazing team around me.” A six-time winner at Melbourne Park, Federer won the Australian Open title in 2017 and 2018 but lost to Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round last year. Djokovic went on to win a record seventh Australian Open title in 2019 and looks in perfect shape to add another after his ninth consecutive hard-court win over world number one Nadal on Sunday as Serbia were crowned champions at the ATP Cup. Nadal has also shown no sign of trouble with his game or his

fitness and the contenders at the Australian Open could again be the Big Three, who have shared the last 12 Grand Slam titles. “I’m aware that at 38 I shouldn’t be the favourite, it should be someone probably in their 20s, but the three of us have been able to stay as the favourites which is great for us,” Federer said. “Both guys are already showing great signs. I was watching a little bit of their ATP Cup match and thought that was a great match. Both guys, injury free, are always tough to beat.” Federer also offered Australian Ash Barty some advice as she

prepares to play her home Grand Slam as women’s world number one. “What a year she’s had; it was a pleasure watching her play,” Federer said. “She can have a different mindset. “It can relax you and you can really explore all of your potential and that’s what happened to me when I won my first major, and I broke through as world number one after that. “I thought, ‘well now I’m the guy to beat and I prefer to be in this position rather than being a contender’. I hope that Ash is also going to see it that way.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There are certain things you just shouldn’t bargain-hunt for, for instance expertise in the medical, mechanical, educational and legal realms. A worthy expert should save you money in the long run. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll stay on point, refusing to do business for its own sake. Better to do nothing, thus conserving your energy for the game, than to spend all your vitality moving without purpose. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): City planners keep water in a high tower so that when the time comes to use the water, gravity will do much of the work instead of pumps, which need to be fuelled. Let gravity do some of your work today, too. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging it deeper. What’s needed to solve today’s problem isn’t to try harder or drill down. Go wide; move to the side; stretch out. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your deepest desire is to advance, get results and serve others well. You want this more than validation. As wonderful as it feels to hear what you want to hear, you’d much rather be told what you need to hear. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Struggles of one nature bleed into other areas of life, a blessing and an opportunity. Now you have more chances to solve the problem and more approach angles, too. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’re really not afraid to be different from the pack, but you’re also wise to keep those differences to yourself until you’re ready to own, share and rally for them. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Persevere. Just think about the story you’ll tell about this one day. Give up now and it’s not going to be an entertaining ditty. You need a big ending – a spectacular win or failure. Either way, a victory for true grit. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Professionalism will take a person pretty far into solving a problem, but expertise comes much further into the job. Don’t rest; keep acquiring the practical hours and skills. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Creative and resourceful people get you thinking about your business. The language that opens up new possibilities will lead to brilliant ideas. “What if?” is a reliable prompt, and so is “Just imagine...” AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Emotional issues are just waiting to be uprooted, confronted and eradicated. Untying the knotty little problems can be tedious, but once you straighten this out, you’re free! PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can be self-reliant whether you need to or not, for a short time or a long one... and yet it’s not your optimum mode. More good relationships will bring more joy, energy, success and soul sustenance.

Kids will get the chance to test their football and cricket skills at a combined holiday programme between Canterbury Cricket and Mainland Football next week. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

Two sports, one programme By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

In a hope to grow interest in both sports and support the wider regions they operate in, Canterbury Cricket and Mainland Football are teaming up to bring a holiday programme to the Ashburton Domain next week. The programme, which will be run for six hours a day on Janu-

ary 20 and 21, will see kids get to try their hand at fun, skill-based games for both football and cricket. Canterbury Cricket marketing and communications co-ordinator Dan Sharples said the idea came from a discussion between the two organisations’ CEOs, and a desire to do more in the regions. “One aspect we both realised

we can do a lot better is supporting our regions, as we have neglected them with our holiday programmes,” he said. Sharples said the programme will focus on fun skills-based activities associated with the two sports with less of a focus on winning. The hope is the programme will drive up participation in both

sports by giving football players a taste of cricket and cricket players a taste of football to try and attract them to the sport. The day will be structured around two groups. One group will practice cricket in the morning whilst the other will practice football, and after lunch, the groups will switch over. This is the first time they have

World Rugby to trial new laws in Super Rugby

run a programme like this, and Sharples said they plan to continue them in the future, taking them to other locations around Canterbury, like Timaru or Methven. More information about the programme can be found on the Canterbury Cricket website www. canterburycricket.org.nz/news/ ashburton-holiday-camp/
